Protest stoush in Queenscliff By PAUL MILLAR ANTI-WAR protesters claim they were beaten and abused by troops when they breached security to enter one of Australia’s key antiterrorism training centres at Swan Island. Victoria Police confirmed that eight protesters were arrested between 7am and 9am yesterday and would be charged with trespass on Commonwealth property. One of the anti-war group, Sam Quinlan, said he was one of the demonstrators that was involved in the pre-dawn break-in. He was soon confronted by two soldiers, who quickly brought the Melbourne man and another trespasser to the ground. He said they were barged to the floor, had hessian bags pulled over their heads and their pants were sliced open with knives. The Swan Island facility is regarded as a training ground for

special units, including counterterrorism police and is used by the elite Special Air Service. It is run by the Australian Secret Intelligence Service, the agency that operates overseas as a sister organisation to the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation. It has been a repeated target of anti-war protesters. Mr Quinlan believed there had been an over-reaction by the troops, who he claimed were SAS. “They ran at us fast, tackled us to the ground, gave us a good beating around the head and then pulled hessian bags over our heads,” the peace activist said. “They started dragging us around, demanding to know how many of us there were, then they cut up our pants with knives and searched us for weapons,” the 26-year-old student said. He said he was relieved when

police arrived and covered up what was left of their shredded clothes. “I was thankful for the arrival of the police. When they got there I finally felt safe,” Mr Quinlan said. Greg Rolles, another activist who entered the facility, said the group was only trying to disrupt preparations for war. “The use of these tactics on citizens of Australia, peacefully protesting the actions of the SAS, is an alarming indication of the use of torture SAS is employing in Iraq, Afghanistan and other undisclosed locations,” he said. Ambulance Victoria confirmed that two civilian men had been treated at Queenscliff for nose injuries. A spokesperson for the Department of Defence was not available for comment.

LIBS candidate for Geelong Paula Kontelj is out of sorts over a political graffiti artist’s assault on her election billboards. The board, on the fence of former mayor Ken Jarvis, was adorned with a talk bubble saying “I hate refugees”. When the Kontelj camp scrubbed this out, it was re-written by said vandal, prompting PK to post an attachment telling the scribbler refugee policy is a federal, not state, issue and that she married the son of refugees.

PORTARLINGTON seems to be in the news for all the wrong reasons lately. Last week, it was Ann Nichol House buyer, Arcare, for hauling a dead resident from a nursing homes fountain, drying her off and putting her back in bed before relatives were called in. This week, the alleged rape by federal opposition leader Bill Shorten 30 odd years ago at a Young Labor conference reared again, though police have discounted the claim. Who says the old Port is a sleepy town?

Police memorial push He was a good friend of Gary Silk, who was gunned down, execution style, with his partner Rodney Miller in Moorabbin in August 1998. Geelong police are listed on the honour roll. More than 130 years have passed since a local constable David Digby drowned while on duty on a ship stranded on the rocks at Point Addis. Other deaths on duty in the region include Constable John Glen, riding a police motorcycle involved in a fatal collision on the Melbourne Road in August, 1956. Three years later Horace Carey died in May when his motorbike col-

lided with a taxi in Mercer St. Another motorcycle crash claimed the life of Senior Constable Peter Smith, while he was undergoing riding instruction on May 14, 1987. In September of the same year Sergeant Russell Thompson was conducting a routine patrol check on the Midland Highway when he was struck and killed by a passing car, which failed to stop. The Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Foundation donated $300,000 to help fit out two resuscitation units at the Geelong Hospital, dedicated to Sgt Thompson.

Geelong street artist brightens the daily commute By NOEL MURPHY GEELONG street artist Rone has his work adorning buildings in Berlin, Miami, Hawaii, London, San Francisco and Paris. Now his elegant work is on show on one of Melbourne’s iconic trams. Rone, the nom de plume of graphic designer Tyrone Wright, started his assault on the art world by decorating skateboards and skateparks before moving into Melbourne’s inner-city streets and lanes, then galleries and exhibitions. Over the past decade, Rone has taken his work to cityscapes in Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Barcelona, New York, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Queenstown. One of his most striking works is a nine-storey high mural dubbed L’Inconnue de la Rue - Unknown Girl of the Street - in Collins Street, Melbourne. Rone’s work is typically of beautiful women. Arts Minister Heidi Victoria this week launched the first of eight new moving artworks by Rone to be rolled out across Melbourne’s trams. “This first tram in the series... has a distinctly Melbourne flavour - bringing the vibrant, layered aesthetic of Melbourne’s laneway culture to the main thoroughfares of the city,” Ms Victoria said. “It captures the spirit of the Melbourne Art Trams program, and the spirit of contemporary Melbourne.”

WORK is well under way on a $7.3 million upgrade to accessibility at Geelong station with a new pedestrian bridge to be lifted into place at the weekend. Transport minister Terry Mulder said all timetabled V/Line trains and road coaches would continue to operate during the major works, but the bus interchange would be closed with coaches and local route buses relocated to temporary bus stops at the Railway Tce taxi rank.

Golf change THIRTEENTH Beach Golf Links will host the Victorian Open for the third consecutive year but its dates have changed, PGA of Australia has announced. Tournaments manager Simon Butterly said the Open would be played from 5 to 8 February and moving it forward a fortnight would allow the tournament to attract a stronger field.

ALL Geelong’s free-to-air channels changed frequencies this week requiring viewers to retune their televisions, freeing up broadcasting spectrum for other uses. Areas affected by the retune included Geelong, East Geelong, South Geelong, North Geelong, Geelong West, St Albans Park, Drysdale, Belmont, Herne Hill, Whittington, Grovedale, Newcomb, Leopold and Newtown.

Library surge GEELONG Regional Library reported record community usage this year with increased visits and loans, CEO Patty Manolis said. Over the last five years visits grew by 34 per cent to 1.7 million, membership grew 16 per cent, eBook loans were up 132 per cent and there was a 96 per cent increase in wi-fi usage.

friends paying their respects to the teenager with the cheeky smile and laying flowers and tributes on the fence and pavement. Melissa Griffiths, a friend of the family, said it was a real tragedy. “They are just such a gorgeous family, she (the mother) is a real battler who would do anything for her children, they mean the world to her,” she said. Amanda Kettner, who knows the family well, said the Castles’ family had lost a much loved family member in the blaze and had also lost all their clothing and possessions. “We just want to help out in any way that we can by organising donations," she said. Ms Kettner, who operates the Plaster Barn, at Newcomb said the family regularly visited her shop. “They are such a lovely family, very close, beautiful people,” she said. The clothes of Dimi’s two younger brothers and mother Angela were destroyed in the fire. Plaster Barn at 58 Charles Street, Newcomb, has

a collection tin for donations. Christ the King Primary School has become a collection point for donations for the grief-stricken family. Appeal organisers are seeking non-perishable foods, toiletries, and good quality toys. Donations can be left at the Wilsons Road school, between 9-10am and 6-7pm. POLICE say there appear to be no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of a teenager in a Newcomb house fire and forensic detectives are concentrating on what caused the fatal blaze. Thirteen-year-old Dimi Cassel’s body was found in a bedroom at the rear of the Greenwood Street house on Tuesday afternoon after a fierce fire raged through the back of single storey home. His grandmother was at the front of the home at the time with his two younger brothers. Detective Senior Constable Daryl Crosthwaite said the grandmother had heard a bang, possibly a window exploding and had managed to get the two young children out of the home. She had tried to investigate what was happening, but was driven back by the intense heat and smoke. Locals attempted to reach the youngster but by then the rear of the home was an inferno. The front of the modest home became a makeshift shrine during the week with neighbours and

GEELONG should be included in police remembrance day celebrations held across the state, according to Police Association boss Ron Iddles. Mr Iddles said he was surprised that Geelong was not included in the ceremonies held for officers killed on duty. Since 1853, 157 Victoria Police officers have been killed on duty, several from the Geelong region. The Remembrance Day went unrecognised in Geelong with members having to travel to Ballarat, Bendigo or Melbourne to pay their respects.

The union chief, one of the most successful homicide detectives in Australia, supported a service in Geelong. “I think they should have one,” Mr Iddles said. Former Geelong Mayor Bruce Harwood, who was on duty at Russell Street when the police headquarters was bombed in 1986, killing Constable Angela Taylor, said for some police it was a time for private reflection. “I know a number of Geelong police make the trip to Melbourne,” he said. While he believed it was a day where people should stop and reflect, he said it was always a hard day for him.

Wyuna’s tourist plans scuttled By PAUL MILLAR PLANS to berth an historic ship at Cunningham Pier as a tourist attraction have been scuttled by the Costa Group. Michael Hoffman, the chief executive of the Victorian Maritime Centre, said he had not given up hope of bringing the MV Wyuna to Geelong but admitted it was a blow not to locate her near the heart of the city. The Wyuna is 64 metres long and weighs in at more than 1300 tonnes. “We have looked at a number of areas to locate the Wyuna, Docklands was one, but because of her size Geelong is a better option,” Mr Hoffman said.

“The thing that has tripped us up is that there is not a public wharf in Geelong any more,’’ he said. The Glasgow-built Wyuna was a pilot vessel and would have had contact with every major ship that came into the Port of Melbourne from the 1950s until her retirement from service in the 1980s. The ship was also discretely fitted with gun turret bases during the Korean and Vietnam troubles. She was built around the same time as the Britannia, the retired Royal yacht, which is now a tourist attraction in Scotland. Mr Hoffman said Wyuna was regarded as Australia’s version of the royal

ance cover to operate as a berthing facility,’’ he said “We made a commercial decision years ago to only allow the occasional Commonwealth naval ship to berth there for a day or two, which has not occurred for several years.” Geelong Mayor Darryn Lyons said Geelong had again missed out on an opportunity to take advantage of its waterfront location because of the lack of a public pier. “Here we have a fascinating and historically important vessel that wants to base itself in Geelong but we cannot find a berth for her because we don’t have a public pier,” Cr Lyons said.

yacht, although she is almost half the size. She is currently berthed in Tasmania, until a home is found for her. In a letter rejecting the offer to berth the vessel at Cunningham Pier, Carl Schokman, said that the berthing of ships “causes a disruption to the orderly running of the current activities”. The chief executive of the Costa Property Group, said that the pier was a privately-owned facility and “we have to decline your request to berth MV Wyuna at Cunningham Pier”. “Although the pier structure has been extensively restored and is maintained as a berthing facility, we do not carry insur-

The mayor said historic vessels like the MV Wyuna and the Enterprise would be a natural fit for a new Yarra Street Pier. “Historic ships, naval vessels and the huge number of pleasure boaters that currently use Port Phillip Bay would all benefit from the additional public berths that stem from a new Yarra Street Pier,” the councillor said. “There is massive interest in private boat operators wanting to tour the bay and visit Geelong for overnight stays but unfortunately we don’t have the berthing capacity. “The MV Wyuna has the potential to be a fantastic tourism drawcard,’’ he said.

IT TOOK one year and 45 days to erect the 437 metre Empire State Building in 1931 but things move slower in Geelong where plans to build a marina development at Rippleside have been shuffled around for 15 years. The Rippleside Maritime Village was regarded as a chance to revamp an ageing shipyard into a trendy development with bayside cafes, a marina, and waterfront homes that looked across the bay. The dust has been shaken off the plans several times over the years, as objections, planning revisions and permit extensions were reviewed by council and the developer. Developer Jim Ramsay, whose company Trendcorp owns the 2.8 hectare parcel of reclaimed land, said the project had stalled and there was no hurry to move it along. “Nothing is really happening at this point in time,” Mr Ramsay said.

“The market is slowing in land sales, we have people calling us all the time but we are not really worried about it. “We think when the market changes a bit we will have another look at it again, but there is such a lot of land on the market at the moment,” he said. An application on behalf of Trendcorp was made to council in December 2012 for an extension to the date by which the development must be commenced. This application requested a new commencement date of 28 February 2014. There is still no sign of any work at the site with advertising signs promoting the flashy development still flapping around in the wind at the once busy shipyard. “There is no rush on it, council would like something to happen, but there is no pressure on us from council,” Mr Ramsay said. 1156854-HM40-14

SENIORS across Geelong are being encouraged to embrace and become more comfortable with technology following the introduction of a new, free training program. The Tech Savvy Seniors training program helps seniors learn more about computers, smartphones and tablet technology at Geelong regional libraries. Duane Dalton, from Telstra, said new communication technology gave people the opportunity to be more connected than ever. “The convenience of smartphones and computers also means doing things like reading the news, shopping, paying bills, banking and planning holidays has never been easier,” Mr Dalton said. Research showed that 64 per cent of Victorian Seniors Card holders used the internet each day. The state government has joined forces with Telstra to fund the initiative, delivering face-to-face technology training to more than 6000 seniors through rural and regional libraries across Victoria.

Ben’s big bike ride bid

IT’S SHOW-TIME: Chris Quirke of the Vintage Machinery Club oils a marine steam engine. 128342 Picture: GREG WANE

Vintage sounds signal the show By PAUL MILLAR FOOTY players know it’s almost game time when they enter the sheds and smell the liniment, but for Chris Quirke the smell of oil lubricating aged, grinding cogs is a clear indicator that it’s almost showtime. While sport might be the drug of the masses, the train ticket inspector gets his fix preparing vintage machinery for the Royal Geelong Show. “When I was younger I used to lean over the fence and look at the machines for ages and then I was asked to help out and I’ve been here for 11 years,” he said. “Once you get bitten by the bug it pretty much stays with you. It’s been great, the old guys have passed their knowledge on to me.” The vintage machinery section of the show is a relative newcomer to the annual show - it’s only been here for 45 years. The show has been running since 1855 and runs from 16 to 19 October. The vintage machinery shed is close to the main entrance of the showgrounds. “If you don’t hear us you will be able to smell us,” quipped Chris as he oiled up some cogs.

BIG BIKE RIDE: Ben Henzgen in training for an endurance race against the clock. Henzgen plans to ride around Australia as a personal challenge but to also raise awareness about climate change and to encourage others to get themselves fitter. A jazz musician, a bass player, with an applied science degree in fire-

fighting, Geelong-born and bred Henzgen’s background is interesting to say the least. He took off to the US four years ago, planning to stay a month. That become four years and nine months. During that time he earned his degree, financed by a music scholarship, wrote off his cousin’s car, became a collegiate athlete, embellished his hide with 23 tattoos, played in US AFL championships twice, worked with the US Navy, as a fisherman in Alaska and on a bison farm, woke in a hospital bed with his jaw wired shut after a big night out and took up mountain bike riding. If all goes well with his Aussie circumnavigation, he plans to try the same next year again on a standard bicycle.

and its wide open spaces and deserts. He crossed the Rockies “a few times”, the Mojave Desert in 44 degree temperatures, Minnesota in mid-40s with a heat factor in the mid-50s while en route to California - via Texas. “It was more of a holiday with a couple of detours here and there. Last year I rode from Santa Maria, California to Des Moines, Iowa averaging 246 km a day,” he said casually. “I was on a mountain bike but I was wearing a 12-pound weight vest plus my 25-pound pack plus a camelback of water. “I won’t be carrying any weights on this ride so I should be able to do a little bit better. I’m aiming for 316 km a day. I’ll go one or two days with about fours sleep then every two or three days take a bit of a rest day.”

SPECIALISING IN CHINESE MEDICINE

PASSERS-BY might have been bemused to see a bloke dropping some 400 push-ups and spritely leaps up and down near the Queens Park bridge earlier this week. Ben Henzgen’s talent for doing mass burpees in ridiculous time might be legend but it’s also solid training for an endurance race against the clock he’s hoping will place his name in the record books. Later this month, he’s planning to set off around Australia on his mountain bike, riding some 300-plus kilometres a day to circle the country in just 45 days. Henzgen’s had a bit of practice in recent times. He’s freshly returned from the US where he rode 57,756 km in several treks across the country

Drones taking to new heights By NOEL MURPHY DRONES, increasingly popular with photographers, are finding new applications among everyone from real estate agents to the mining sector - not to mention defence forces. With a cost of around $2000 to get set up, they’re within ready striking range of the general public. Their implications with regard to privacy and other laws, however, have yet to be tested. Notwithstanding, some upperend hotels have already started offering poolside drone drink services while mail deliveries and other drone services are on the drawing board. Pizzas maybe? Surf Coast photographer Ed Sloane is one bloke who’s taken on board the new angles offered by drone-cameras. Together with Ashley Bent,

Originally an environmental scientist working as a hydrographer in the Otway, Bellarine, Barwon and Corangamite catchments, he can see the value of aerial photography to inform land management along the coast. “There are so many applications,” Sloane told the Independent. “We’re not looking just at images but at potential surveying applications, there’s a lot of stuff you can do – stocktakes for mines and the likes. “Our focus is on surveying and engineering but also cinematography - you can get much better angles than helicopters and drones are cheaper too.”

Sloane and the Corangamite Catchment Management Authority will be hosting an awareness raising Estuaries Unmasked seminar at the Aireys pub on 9 October from 6.30pm. Catchment Ecology Services’ Stephen Harfield will be on hand with details about the Painkalac Creek gathered by estuary watchers over the past seven years. Inquiries to 5232 9100. Drones offer spatial information to complement data collected by the estuary watchers and offer the potential to move vital environmental research up a notch. Another thing yet to be tested with drones, and presumably a fair challenge, is just what birds - known to be ferociously territorial to a fault - might think of their new featherless friends. Stay tuned.

Local sport in pre-election funds Mayor is dressed for the occasion THREE local sporting and recreation projects received a welcome boost this week with the State Government pledging an investment of $300,000 in the region. Sports Minister Damian Drum said the government would provide $100,000 in funding for a new beginners’ mountain bike park in Newtown to include three cross country tracks, skills track, and a pump track. Other beneficiaries of government funding were the Corio Soccer Club, receiving $100,000 to upgrade its lighting at Hume Reserve to match playing standard. The $100,000 will go towards installing four poles and 12 floodlights at the reserve, with the City of Greater Geelong contributing $250,000. During a pre-election visit, the minister also announced $100,000 to upgrade the existing

GEELONG Mayor Darryn Lyons has thrown his support behind the Do It In A Dress campaign to help raise awareness to educate girls in Sierra Leone. “By putting on a dress it gets the message out there that girls in Sierra Leone need help in receiving an education,” said Cr Lyons. “The numbers are staggering, 66 million girls around the world don’t have an education and we can help reduce those numbers by donating to Do It In A Dress. “One in five girls in developing countries enrols in primary school but they never finish and it’s important to give young children the best start in life through an education.” Mayor Lyons said that dressing up for One Girl’s Do It In A Dress campaign was a bit of fun and he hoped people visited the website featuring personal items from Oprah up for CURTSEY: Mayor Darryn Lyons wearing a dress for a charity. THE BIG SHED

A CONTINUING trend of serious injuries on the region’s roads was a major concern, according to Transport Accident Commission analysis of its latest figures. And a drop in the road toll was no reason for complacency, the insurance organisation said. Geelong experienced four deaths, compared with 12 for the previous year, while the Surf Coast was down from five to three. However, serious injuries, re-

quiring hospitalisation of over 14 days, remained almost the same in both areas. Geelong logged 32 serious injuries in the 12 months to the end of August this year, compared with 33 the previous year. The figure for Surf Coast was eight this year, one up on last year. TAC acting head Joe Calafiore said the figures were still well short of the target of no fatalities and no injuries. “It’s important to point out that the 2013 figures were inflated by a single crash that claimed five

young lives at Lara in December 2012,” Mr Calafiore said. “That tragedy just underlines how quickly a positive trend can turn the other way. “It is also important to note that the region has not seen the same decline in serious injuries over the past year, so it is vital that the community does not take falling fatality numbers as a signal to be complacent with road safety.” The deaths, were largely preventable and had a tragic impact on the community.

Empty plastic bags can also get caught in the conveyor belts, jam spinning wheels and bring the entire sorting process to a halt. Letters IF COUNTRY Victoria is to have a strong voice in the state’s transport future, it is critical that regional RACV members vote in the current board election, closing on 7 October. I am running for re-election as a director in the 2014 RACV board election. I am a Bellarine cattle farmer and former lawyer. Together with my fellow director, Suzanna Sheed, a business owner in Shepparton who is also standing for re-election, we are strong supporters of regional representation in RACV decision-making. There are only three regionally based directors out of 15 currently on the RACV board and if Suzanna and I are not re-elected there will only be one non-Melbourne director. Two of the people opposing us are inner-city Greens against the East West Link. There are two million RACV members, with about 700,000 in rural and regional Victoria. Through this strong country membership base, RACV has the potential to be a powerful voice for regional Victorians on a wide range of road and transport issues. But for this voice to be heard, it is critical that country members vote for a board that is going to represent their issues. If rural members fail to vote for representatives engaged in regional issues, the RACV board will be dominated by city members and the interests of our country members won’t get a look in. Weakest link DOES Stretch Kontelj really believe we will swallow that rubbish? Contract termination costs will not be an issue if the Liberals don't sign them. I personally see the East West link as a scam that will only deliver to the contractors and no one else. Obviously there's enough opposition to do just that. Let the voters decide. Private precedent THE Costa Group’s ownership of Cunningham Pier sets a precedent: Why shouldn't a Yarra Street Pier comprising a modest convention centre facility, hospitality outlets, an occasional market, pop-up retail along with appropriate multi-faceted moorings and berthing facilities not be privately funded? G21 now has a Yarra Street Pier at around $40m and $140m GPAC upgrade as equal top priorities. Mayor Darryn Lyons bloody-minded and pretty much non-consultative push for the pier has merit. Leaving aside a dubious cruise-liner businesscase, a new pier would complete the waterfront precinct. The long term benefit is to shore up and grow the number of discretionary dollar day trippers who visit when not by-passing the CBD for the A new school was built at Lovely Banks in 1963, under Father Stephen Maloney, when the school offered classes from year five to year 12.

Parrot a key to fatal bird virus By NOEL MURPHY DEAKIN researchers hope to stave off an extinction threat to Aussie parrots and potentially up to one in four birds worldwide. Key to their study are the varied colours of the brightly plumaged crimson rosella and their link to the deadly beak and feather disease virus. Project author Dr Mathew Berg said the virus challenged wildlife monitoring and captive breeding programs, particularly with respect to the orange-bellied parrot. “The virus is also of global conservation concern and while it may be confined to parrots, around 25 per cent of the world’s approximately 350 species have been estimated at risk of global extinction,” Dr Berg said. “Our research results are not only good news for crimson rosellas, but we now have a good model species with which to study the disease, which is extremely important if we are to minimise its impact on the world’s parrot population. “In a nutshell, it seems that just as the human flu can be deadly to some people and innocuous to others, it seems that the beak and feather disease virus has the same effect on the parrots it infects.” The research team from Deakin’s Centre for Integrative Ecology and School of Medicine has had its results published by the journal, Proceedings of the National Academy of Science USA.

Polly: Australian rosellas hold the key to solving a deadly bird flu.

PhD student Justin Eastwood said the crimson rosella’s variety of extraordinary colours appeared linked to the virus. “As ebola and the common cold remind us, disease is ever present and animals and humans have exquisite adaptations and solutions to escape them - and what works for one species, or subspecies, will not necessarily work for another’” he said. “The virus is only found in parrots, it’s no danger to humans, but the danger it presents to parrots seems to vary from species to species and it can be pretty nasty. “The Australian Government lists the virus as a key threat to biodiversity under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 as in some species it can lead to extensive feather loss and death.” The researchers spent eight years watching the rosella evade

the grip of the deadly virus - noting that hybrid species of the bird appeared more resistant to the disease. “Rarely has the population structure of a virus or other parasite been studied in free-living hybrid populations, so our study is rather unusual,” Dr Berg said. “Although the virus appears to be rather benign in the crimson rosella it may still be infecting other parrot species and as crimson rosellas are common and geographically widespread, this risk needs to be determined.” Dr Berg said such risk was part of a new Australian Research Council funded research study to spring from the results. “Our hope is that by better understanding how the virus affects birds we may be able to reduce the extinction risk to parrots,” he said.

Time to look good at the races

GEELONG

THE arrival of the Spring Racing Carnival is a perfect time to take action because winter can leave skin feeling dull and dehydrated. Dermal clinician Rebecca Harrison recommends a gentle skin peel to cleanse and refine pores, restoring your skin’s natural glow. The Rationale Enzyme Reactivation Treatment is based on organic compounds such as lactic acid and vitamin C and can be customised to skin type. Skin looks radiant and feels fresh and smooth after the first treatment. For long term results, a course of four to six clinical treatments is performed a month apart. The Rationale treatment is can be combined with a microdermabrasion to renew skin cells. Microdermabrasion is a light exfoliation technique leaving the skin fresh and soft and is ideal to treat pigmentation and sun damage. For even deeper results, LED therapy is often combined with a skin peel for the ultimate treatment. Light Emitting Diode treatment uses low levels of light to assist tissue healing, reduce inflammation and aid skin rejuvenation.

WE CAN HELP!

Paul with some of the Metabolic Meals. “We just want to promote healthy eating,” says Jessica. “There’s been a focus on sportspeople and athletes but we are open to everyone - to older people, people wanting to lose weight. “We work one on one with the people and work a diet for them. We’re all about balanced portions, about not eating too much

and not eating too little.” Metabolic Meals saves time and doesn’t cost much more than doing it all yourself. “It just makes sense to take some of the burden off without compromising to unhealthy fast food, highly processed factory food meals or outrageous prices,” says Jessica.

Smile with a dental implant IMPLANTS are an effective way to replace missing teeth. When teeth are lost because of disease or an accident, dental implants may be a good option. Dental implants can assist people who hide their smile because of missing teeth, or because missing teeth affect speech. They can replace uncomfortable dentures or unsatisfactory removable partial dentures, and help keep remaining teeth intact. Many people choose implants to replace a single tooth or sev-

eral teeth, or to support a full set of dentures. Implants are posts surgically placed into the upper or lower jawbone. They replace the root of one or more missing teeth. Implants offer firm support to man-made teeth. Dentures, bridges or single teeth attached to the implants won’t slip or shift, an important benefit when eating and speaking The secure fit also helps manmade teeth feel more natural than typical bridges or dentures. Where teeth are missing, den-

tal implants also help keep the jawbone from shrinking. Implants are good value because they can last a lifetime with good care. Implant treatment can take only one day, or it can take several weeks, usually involving three steps, the placement of the implant, healing process and replacement of teeth. Talk to Norlane Dental Surgery about dental implants to decide if implant treatment is the right option.

HEALTHY lifestyles, by definition, need healthy food. And healthy food needs a proper goto-whoa approach if it’s going to be effective. Which is precisely what Metabolic Meals aims to do with its high-quality, affordable, nutritionally balanced meals. The new business is spearheaded by Paul Cornea and Jessica Jovanovic, who share a passion for food. “We started with the crossfit community, cooking for our friends, but they wanted more and more and then others heard about us and we grew naturally into a business,” Jessica says. “We opened just six months ago, delivering direct and selling in-store. HEEL pain affects over 80 per cent of Australians at some time in their lives. Common symptoms include: pain or a bruising feeling first thing in the morning; throbbing at the end of the day; stiffness and/ or soreness when standing up after sitting; and pain during and/or after activity. Foot + Leg Pain Clinics musculoskeletal podiatrist Dr David Kavanagh says a lot of misinformation surrounds heel pain, often leading to misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment. “The symptoms are usually misdiagnosed as either heel spurs or plantar fasciitis,” Dr Kavanagh says. “Most heel pain occurs when the plantar fascia, the connective tissues running along the bottom

Geelong Chamber Music Society in association with Musica Viva presents

NEW SYDNEY WIND QUINTET and Graham Abbott

Mother Goose meets Peter and the Wolf Australia’s leading wind quintet will perform Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite, music by Paul Taffanel and Percy Grainger, and Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf narrated by Graham Abbott

JUMPING: The Queen tribute show rocked the festival last year.

VAUDEVILLIAN Pugsley Buzzard along with recycled Credence, INXS and Springsteen are just some of the vintage music acts who will be rocking out the Motor City Music Festival when it returns to Geelong next March. More than 40 acts over five stages will also include Joe Camilleri’s Black Sorrows, pop-darlings the Eurogliders, evergreens Jimi Hocking, Geoff Achison and Chris Wilson along with country legend James Blundell in the first line-up of performers to be released to the public.

Geelong mayor Darryn Lyons launched the festival, dubbed Geetroit Rocks, at the waterfront carousel last night. “Last year people raved about the festival and I’m sure this year will have the same reaction,” he said. “I love that this three-day festival offers entertainment for people of all ages. There are five stages that feature live rock, country, blues, soul music and kids activities.” The first Motor City Music Festival was a roaring success with tribute bands to Janis Joplin, The Doors, Queen, Led Zeppelin

and KISS performing alongside stellar rock and blues performers. The second festival will include a family day Sunday, a dedicated country music stage, JR Reyne (son of James), Jason Singh (ex-Taxiride), Michael Stangel and Geelong’s favourite sons, The Glitter Gang. Organiser Hugo T. Armstrong, said the festival celebrated Geelong’s past and present. “With a great live soundtrack, there is something for everyone at the festival designed to entertain and excite,” he told the Independent.

Friday 17 October at 7:30 pm at McAuley Hall, Sacred Heart College, Aphrasia Street, Newtown. Tickets: Adult (incl. Seniors) $45, Concession Card $40, Students $10; available from GPAC 5225 1200 or www.gpac.org.au, the Secretary (5243 6931) or at the door. Further Information: Details and booking form available on our website www.gcms.org.au. HE WORE red socks with his tuxedo, ate hedgehogs and was a villain for missing gigs, usually AWOL gambling and sending his brother in his stead. Eccentric as he might have been, the music of gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt, together with his violinist confrere Stephane Grappelli, remains as exciting today as when it lit up the clubs and bars of 1930s Paris. It’s the music of the manouche, the jazz of the traveller. It speaks of moody firelit campsites and twirling, vibrant gypsy dancers on a moonlit night. Evokes the colours, drama, festivity and intense emotion of the French nomadic life. Geelong’s Hot Club Swing, inspired by Reinhardt and Grappelli and their ground-breaking Quintet of the Hot Club of France, have been belting out their elegant musique for nigh on a couple

of decades now. Everything from HCQ Strut, Minor Blues and Blue Drag to Limehouse Blues, Tico Tico and Nuit et Jour. Jazz classics like Honeysuckle Rose, Sweet Georgia Brown, Satin Doll and Out of Nowhere. Instrumentals like Indiana/Donna Lee, I Found a New Baby, Topsy, My Melancholy Baby, Si Tu Savais and a host more songs and melodies are contained in Hot Club Swing’s armoury. It’s fair to say the music’s old school romantic but don’t underestimate the musicianship – gypsy jazz is technically challenging at best. It’s no surprise that when the movie Sherlock Holmes’ music director Hans Zimmer wanted the best musicians about for his score he turned to the Romany gypsies. Hot Club Swing are no slouches, either. Led by guitarist Ben Calderazzo and violinist Phil Smurthwaite, each wicked practitioners in their own right,

Degrees of flavour COOKING, dining and socialising - these are the fundamentals of human enjoyment, and Geelong West’s 400 degrees has them down pat. And they do it with a twist, a healthy twist. 400 degrees, at the north end of Pako, features a remarkable Stonegrill Restaurant that allows diners to be the “masterchef”. The stone is heated to a sizzling 400 degrees and patrons make their selections from prime offerings of beef, chicken, seafood and more - and do the cooking themself. “It’s great fun, absolutely,”

says owner-manager Paula Leone. “It’s very interactive. We find people come in as couples initially then a few weeks later they’re back with four people, then for birthdays with larger groups to share the concept. “We have a lot of regular customers because of the fact you can control the way you cook and because every mouthful is as delicious as the first.” The cuisine is healthy as all produce is trimmed of fat and no oils are added to the stone. Don’t fuss if you can’t cook, friendly staff at 400 Degrees are more than happy to assist.

Mouth-watering steaks such as eye fillet and black Angus fillets and wagyu rump, porterhouse are all on the menu. As well as great steaks they also offer seafood, chicken breast, and grilled Haloumi vegetarian grill. In addition, 400 degrees menu includes Thai beef curry, a selection of pasta dishes, chicken salad, salt and pepper calamari, and choices for the kids. So get set to experience a taste beyond anything you’ve had before and get set to have some fun. 400 degrees, 17 Pakington St, Geelong West, phone 5229 9992.

Connecting people and communities

Grove open day

New Lara hub IT’S SET to be the social hub at the heart of Lara Lifestyle Village, and with the clubhouse’s December completion just around the corner, the residents can hardly wait. Like all National Lifestyle Village communities, the clubhouse is the central meeting place where residents get together for a range of social events such as dinners, balls, shows and fund-raisers. It also offers a place for exercise, relaxation with friends, or enjoying a quiet moment in the library. When complete, the facility will accommodate a grand hall with a stage and state-of-the-art audio visual equipment for movie nights, special performances and sporting celebrations. Barry and Heather Walker were one of the very first residents to move into Lara Lifestyle Village back in 2012 and with their kids now living in other states of the country, are planning on enjoying a special Christmas luncheon with other residents who might also be on their own this Christmas. “We’re really looking forward to a get-together in the clubhouse with our friends in the village and fortunately we have some great cooks here so it’ll be a lot of fun and great feast,” Heather says. Key to the clubhouse’s design is a timber boardwalk overlooking a tranquil water feature which will frame the building’s exterior and lead pedestrians to an outdoor barbecue area set beneath a gazebo. For more information, call 1300 45 55 65, visit nlv.com.au or visit the village at 40 Watt Street, Lara, open daily from 10am.

Barry and Heather Walker are anticipating the new clubhouse.

Lifestyle Communities’ new Bell Park resort will look similar to this.

Downsize to a bigger lifestyle GEELONG’S over 50s have welcomed the launch of a new residential community. Lifestyle Communities’ new 165-home resort at Bell Park allows older homeowners to free up money from the sale of their family home to live an independent lifestyle in a new home. Lifestyle Communities’ managing director James Kelly says many homeowners are looking to downsize and enjoy life more. “Over 50s want to be active and to be able to live their life to the fullest. We call it downsizing to a bigger lifestyle.” Lifestyle Communities of-

fer a land lease model allowing customers to buy their homes and enter into a 90-year lease for the land, with no stamp duty, council rates, water supply or authority charges and no body corporate. Homeowners on the pension can apply for government rental assistance, James explains. Prices for new homes at Lifestyle Geelong range from $222,300 to $346,500 with a range of one, two and two-bedroom plus study designs. All have stainless steel appliances, stone benchtops, quality tiles and carpets, window furnishings, heating and cooling, land-

scaping as well as a garden shed. Homeowners enjoy free and unlimited access to a wide array of resort facilities, including a $2.5 million clubhouse with indoor heated pool, tennis court, fully-equipped gym, library, computer centre, barbecue and entertaining area, bowling green, bigscreen cinema, billiards room, dance floor and workshop. To receive a Lifestyle Geelong information pack or to make a booking at the next free information session call Carolyn on 0423 559 231. For more information about Lifestyle Communities, visit lifestylecommunities.com. au.

THE GREY Outdoors Leisure Tours, operated by Sandy and Rob Higgins, conduct small group day and overnight trips for seniors from Geelong and surrounding areas. Rob says that passengers find that small groups of 12 are much friendlier. “They get to know everyone on the trip, because they do not get lost in the crowd - there is not a crowd to get lost in. “Everything is easier with a small group because there are no queues. It is quicker and easier to get on and off the bus. Meals are served quickly. “There is also more time to enjoy the places we visit because you do not have to wait for the crowd.” Rob adds that small group sizes means the tour can visit places that larger groups cannot. “Scenic back roads are accessible, small parking areas are a breeze and special places that cannot cater for 50 people can cater for our smaller group.”

THE STAFF at Eden Park show they are prepared to take that extra step in their commitment to aged care. More than 20 staff, family and friends took part in the recent Geelong Memory Walk and Jog around Eastern Park in a show of support for Alzheimer’s Australia. Loretta Muratore, the resident-liaison co-ordinator at the Whittington aged-care facility, says Alzheimer’s Australia do so much for the cause that staff felt they wanted to give something back to help the foundation. The foundation’s experts always make themselves available to the Whittington centre, educating staff on how to handle different situations. “It is such a debilitating disease and it affects different people at different times in their lives,” Loretta says. “It can be very hard on families caring for loved ones at home and it is a huge commitment. Sometimes they just need a break. We offer respite care on a short-term basis, when we have a place available,” Loretta says.

Eden Park staff joined the memory walk and jog. Eden Park is always upgrading staff training to deliver the highest standard of care and quality of life for its residents. Trained nurses are on duty around the clock, seven days a week and are committed to making life as easy as possible for those in their care and concerned family members. “It is a tough decision choosing an aged-care facility that meets all requirements. It requires careful consideration, it is a lifestyle choice, we know how important it is and we are here to help and always available to provide a tour,” Loretta says.

Free tests for hearing aid offer

Hearing Aid Specialists Geelong’s Yarra St head office. HEARING Aid Specialists Geelong has been a family-owned practice since 1991 but has operated on the same central city site in Yarra St since 1989. Locally owned, operated and staffed, the business takes great pride in helping people achieve their full hearing potential. Over the years hearing devices have become more advanced and

able to provide wearers with better outcomes in a variety of listening situations. Along with the advancement in technology comes the need to accurately assess the performance of the hearing devices. Hearing Aid Specialists Geelong’s Marcel Timmers likens it to buying a sports car but then having it tuned by someone who either doesn’t have the right equipment or the experience to extract the correct performance. “It’s very important the devices are calibrated to the individual’s hearing loss accurately and also takes into account the individual’s needs,” he advises. Hearing Aid Specialists Geelong takes the time to understand

clients’ needs and works with them to ensure that devices are not only tuned to their hearing loss but also strive to help them achieve their hearing goals. “Utilising a state-of-the-art hearing device analyser like the Aurical Real Ear Analyser, we can accurately assess the performance of your hearing devices while you are actually wearing them,” Mr Timmers says. “This allows us to take into account personal ear characteristics, like the shape and size of your ear canal and pinna effect.” Hearing Aid Specialists Geelong has set aside some consultations for free assessments of hearing devices’ performance but places are limited, so phone 5223 2770.

Opal’s South Valley difference

Opal South Valley residents are loooking forward to the garden party. THE RESIDENTIAL aged care home formerly known as Domain South Valley, has been renamed Opal South Valley, as part of a company-wide rebrand. Located in Highton, the South Valley home’s focus is on providing outstanding care in a friendly

and inviting atmosphere for all residents and their families. The home values strong links with the local community, encouraging visits, while planned activities such as day trips within the local area, arts and crafts and bingo are always popular with residents. The next event is a garden party on 11 October from 10.30am to 2.30pm, with the local community, residents and families invited to enjoy a range of complimentary entertainment and food. Highlights include live music, face painting for the kids, a sausage sizzle, Devonshire tea, and stalls from the Geelong Bonsai Club and Bunnings Waurn Ponds Garden Club. Facility manager Wendy

Crichton says residents are keen to welcome visitors. “We’ve provided aged care to the local community for many years and would like to give back by inviting people to come and see the wonderful care we offer and enjoy the day with us.” The home has a range of generous accommodation options and living spaces giving residents a high level of privacy and comfort. On top of this, specialist clinical care is provided along with social and recreational programs and nutritious, home-style meals freshly cooked onsite. Opal South Valley is at 209 South Valley Rd, Highton with admission enquiries available on 5244 4106.

SUSPECTING a hearing loss 10 years ago Erik took matters into his own hands. “I saw a free hearing check in Geelong with government assistance so I called to make an appointment and choose Belmont’s Australian Hearing for the convenience of location and parking,” Erik says. “I was getting to the point where I was finding it difficult to understand conversation. With family gatherings of five or six I just couldn’t understand what they were actually saying.” The rest is history as Erik explains. “Zoe Williams tested me and what she did in terms of setting me up with Waterproof Aquaris aids and a Minitek for my smart phone has made a world of difference. “I find now I can follow group conversations and speak on the phone so much easier. The technology is something I am very into and I have enjoyed putting everything to the test and challenging the new technology. “The difference the aids have made to my life is wonderful. My self-confidence has improved. I wear my aids virtually every day. “I find a big difference in my hearing. My wife always knows when I am not wearing them, she can tell easily not visually but through my speech projection and responses. She is a big advocate for my aids.” During Seniors Week Australian Hearing encourages all seniors to have their hearing checked. Please call 131 797 for a free hearing check.

Erik took advantage of a free check with Australian Hearing.

“Your pathway to quality hearing care”

HEARING aids that connect directly to iPhones, iPods and iPads are finally available. The technology transmits phone rings to the hearing-aid wearer who then accepts the call and hears the caller like anyone else would. In the case of iPods, the music goes straight to the hearing aid, so earbuds are not required. Users can even participate in Facetime communications to hear family and friends loud and clear. Even navigation directions while driving can be transmitted directly from iPhones to the hearing aids. The made-for-iPhone technology needs no intermediary devices, such as remote controls or neckloops. Users have the ability to change the volume on their aids with their iPhone or add a free app to adjust even more. The technology also allows helpful features like a hearing aid tracker to find aids if still turned on or to supply a map image showing where they were when last seen. Anyone with current Apple products and a hearing loss can phone the clinic to discuss their needs. The new technology is not

Billy pushing the walk buttons a key for Allan TAKING good care of yourself is the theme of this year’s seniors festival, and Allan Bradshaw couldn’t agree more. The 93-year-old Uniting AgeWell resident reckons he’s found the key to exercising and keeping fit. And in his case, it’s a cute little bundle of fur called Billy. Allan reckons Billy’s bossy attitude keeps him on his toes. “I saw this little fella about a year ago. I thought at the time, he looks like he could take on the whole world, and he does. “Billy needs to have a walk every day, and

he lets me know when it’s time to go out and check the mail box,” Allan says. “The exercise is good for both of us and I know as you get older, you need to take care of yourself.” Allan moved into Uniting AgeWell Costa Court Serviced Apartments in 2005 to be closer to his wife who was a resident at Uniting AgeWell Kalkee Murray residential care next door. He enjoys the independence and support provided by the complex of residential units.

Lunch and dinner are provided and a cleaning service every week. “It’s all in hand,” he said. Independent living units co-ordinator Heather Burger says having pets in the residential complex is negotiable. “Having Billy has given him a new zest for life and a focus, and it means he also walks regularly.” For queries regarding Uniting AgeWell residential opportunities in Geelong, call Heather Burger on 5243 9566.

Bella Chara is for those more independent that appreciate the privacy of their own front door but value the security of making their home within a community. “The momentum continues to this day. We now also offer respite care, in-home care and our newer service, Complete Care,” Ms Leggo says. “All our services are fully integrated, meaning we can ease and streamline the move to higher care as our clients age and require further assistance.” Coinciding with its milestone

MACS’ oldest resident, Ms Franciska Lobojko, aged 103, was born in Croatia in January 1910. 20th anniversary, MACS was recognised as providing ‘Excellence in Aged Care Services’ at the national Centre for Cultural Diversity in Ageing Excellence Awards 2014. LOCAL aged care provider Multicultural Aged Care Services (MACS) has much to celebrate, marking its 20th year of caring for people in the community this year. MACS first opened its doors in 1994 as the Geelong Multicultural Hostel. MACS CEO Joy Leggo says MACS was driven to provide innovative and culturally appropriate aged care for Geelong’s migrant community from its beginning. “With as many as one in three Geelong people having a parent, grandparent or great grandparent settling in Australia from overseas, the need was too great to ignore.” Over the next decade, MACS

Mike’s golden oldies MIKE the Entertainer knows how to relate to his predominantly seniors audiences. After all, he’s getting on a bit himself, as he will freely admit. And he’s been through life’s ups and downs. But coming back to music always seems to help, and it’s a refrain his audiences know well. “I love singing the oldies, like Dean Martin, Sinatra, Bing Crosby and Matt Munroe,” Mike says. “I’m an oldie myself now, so I can relate. “I have five different Elvis costumes so there’s always a tune in there that everyone knows. “Plus I can still wriggle my hips despite a crook back,” he laughs. Mike’s show is well known across the region’s aged care Belmont Denture Clinic.

Dentures help smiles THERE are many benefits to be gained by replacing missing natural teeth with a full or partial denture. Belmont Denture Clinic’s Ian Flintoff says replacement teeth help fill out a smile by giving support to the cheeks and lips. “Replacement teeth create a more youthful, vibrant appearance by holding up facial muscles and aid in speaking, chewing, swallowing and smiling,” Ian explains. Ian says a dental prosthetist as a qualified and skilled member of the dental profession, can assist with replacement teeth.

“Dental prosthetists are the only registered health provider specifically trained to construct, fit and maintain dentures and all other professional denture care services, including sporting mouth guards. “Whenever you experience difficulty with your dentures or have any concerns with the comfort of your dentures, contact Belmont Denture Clinic for advice. “We are the denture professionals and we listen to your needs.” Call Ian at Belmont Denture Clinic for a free consultation on 5241 6300.

centres and senior citizens clubs. “People like it when you communicate with them and share a bit of yourself. After all, we’ve all been there, we’ve all lost someone or had things to deal with. “It’s not only the music that helps, but also the banter during a show.” His showbiz tradition goes back a few years now, with appearances in a number of stage shows and musicals, Oklahoma among his favourites. He also landed regular extra work and bit parts in police dramas like Homicide and Division 4, often playing a crook. Mike will bring the oldies back for Seniors Week at Market Square shopping centre on 7 October from midday to 2pm.

Premium in all but price By DEREK OGDEN THE Sportage continues to star in the Kia cast on the Australian automotive stage with an enhanced range keeping this compact sport utility vehicle in the market spotlight. The South Korean manufacturer recently introduced upgrades across the Europeansourced range, including engine and gearbox improvements and a value-for-money new Si Premium model. Available in two-wheel and all-wheel drive versions, the Si Premium stands at the head of the 2WD range sporting a standard six-speed automatic transmission, 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlamps, roof rails, reversing camera, leather and cloth trim seats, exterior mirror mounted indicators, LED daytime running lights and driver lumbar support. On the market at $29,990, plus on-road costs, the Kia Sportage Si Premium 2.0 GDi 2WD automatic was given a workout in a range of on-road situations in south-east Queensland. The designer’s pen has been at work on reshaping the already up-to-date looks of the existing Sportage. Among the changes are a new front grille, new LED rear lamp clusters, a revised range of alloy wheels with a choice of 16, 17 or 18-inch diameter and a shark-fin roof antenna. The passenger cabin has been enhanced with greater use of softtouch materials across the dashboard and the upper door panels, a new instrument cluster with a 4.2-inch LCD display screen and powered driver’s seat. Across the petrol range the new Sportage benefits from an upgrade to the smooth and efficient 2.0-litre direct-injection petrol powerplant, the Si Premium making use of a six-speed automatic transmission driving through the front wheels. Travellers can stay connected with standard Bluetooth with

08 VOLVO V70 T6 WAGON AUTOMATIC TRANS / CLIMATE CONTROL / The Sportage Si Premium adds a further dimension to the modern and versatile Kia compact SUV range. phone and media streaming and a trip computer. Further convenience is offered by keyless entry, rain-sensing wipers and cruise control. Safety is front and centre across the range, with six airbags, stability control with traction control, anti-lock brakes, electronic brake force distribution and brake assist on hand to keep things on an even keel. Hill-start assist and downhill brake control are also standard, along with disc brakes all round and active front head restraints. Projector headlamps have a cornering function. Much attention has been paid to reduction in noise, vibration and harshness with a new soundproof windscreen, incorporating a film between the glass laminations, while improvements to the front subframe, drivetrain and transmission mountings minimise vibration. It was a dark and stormy night, the Sportage was punting along a winding Gold Coast Hinterland road when a big black dog loomed in the headlights. Responsive steering and efficient anti-skid braking had the vehicle rounding the bewildered hound with room to spare. The reverse could have been the result if the car had been go-

ing, well, in reverse. The reversing camera lacked any sort of useful definition behind the SUV in the dark on the tiny mirror-mounted screen. When taking off on a wet slope there was a spot of wheelspin between the hill-start assist letting go and traction control cutting in - minor bleats in generally competent behaviour. The Kia Sportage Si Premium 2.0 GDi 2WD automatic gives the owner the comfort and convenience of a small SUV without the worry of clocking up the considerable costs of all-wheel drive fuel consumption. Customers also share in the Kia five-year unlimited kilometre warrant with capped price servicing over the same period.

IMPROVING a car’s power by up to 30 per cent while actually improving fuel economy sounds like a big ask for a Land Rover, BMW, Mini or Jaguar or other European marques. Not so, says Hunter Cuthill director Adam Hunter. It’s readily achievable by using top-line Autologic technology, he advises, adding that it’s also a sound way of ensuring efficiency performance in a more-sustainable fashion. Hunter Cuthill, in Geelong West’s Autumn St, specialises in quality independent servicing and repairs to all BMWs, Land Rover, Mini and Jaguars - as per factory schedules and directives and with full book service. The business also services car makes including Peugeot, Renault and Citroen. It is the only service centre in Geelong outside of direct dealers with the software and diagnostic equipment for these brands. “We utilise state of the art diagnostic equipment from Autologic, the world’s leading independent vehicle diagnostic software,” Adam says. “It’s the only independent tool that can program control units. Autologic also offer software power upgrades for diesel and some petrol engines, giving 30 per cent more power while improving fuel economy.” Hunter Cuthill is also right across the best battery choices to meet the energy demands of European cars. VARTA batteries, powered by AGM technology, feature advanced equipment such as start-stop technologies and regenerative braking systems. “This is a battery that delivers optimal performance, faster conductivity and reliable starting power, even when the charge is low,” Adam says. “AGM batteries deliver up to eight times the cyclic stability of conventional flooded batteries resulting in a longer battery life.” Hunter Cuthill is at 9 Autumn St, Geelong West, phone 5229 4299 or visit huntercuthill.com.au.

WITH settled weather last week, anglers hit the water in great numbers with outstanding results from both fresh and saltwater. Queenscliff continued to produce excellent squid for those drifting in the bight and the pier area. Matthew Simpson and his son Jimmy were drifting for squid and found them to two kilograms. Over at Portarlington, anglers encountered both squid and whiting. Squid were holding on the grass beds in four to six metres of water and even shallower towards evening. Smaller jigs were the key as the tide was not that strong. Charlton Cefai took his son Patrick out in an attempt to catch his first squid. It did not take Patrick long to work out how to catch them and his first was a whopper weighing at almost 1.2kg. Anglers fishing the pier have landed whiting using pippies as bait. Clifton Springs was the clear stand out this week producing snapper, squid, whiting and salmon. While out chasing squid on the shallow grass beds, anglers were taken by surprise when large schools of Australian salmon to 3kg erupted onto the surface. Casting soft plastics and small 15gram metal slugs, anglers landed

bag limit catches in quick time. Graham Edwards was one of several out in the channel where snapper to 9kg were taken by those putting in the hours and using fresh baits such as squid and silver whiting. Inside Corio Bay, pike, pinkie snapper and along with silver trevally have all been caught in the past week. Fishing North Shore jetty, Ashlee Seddons used chicken fillet as bait resulting in a respectably sized 70cm ling. Down at the Curdies Estuary last week, Michael, Ned and Henry Wright landed some excellent bream to 38cm using scrub worms on lightly weighted rigs. Bullen Merri has been known this past winter for the quality of the chinook salmon it has been producing so this week it was a great surprise to see that an Atlantic salmon of 4.27kg was taken by Gabi Willis fishing live bait down deep. Fly fishing up at Hepburn Lagoon this past weekend, Diego Gilberto banked a nicely-coloured rainbow trout of just over 1kg using a woolly bugger fly. Heading out of town, David Hughes and Ross Baddley spent some time fishing Lake Jindabyne. The pair caught brown tout to 2.5kg and brook trout to 1.5kg, fishing mudeye and trolling lures such as tassie devils. Those looking to wet a line over the next week should consider giving Clifton Springs a go for snapper and salmon. If freshwater is your thing then Purrumbete and Bullen Merri are well worth a shot for trout and salmon.

PROMOTED: Warriors players and coaches gather for an end-of-season team photo.

Warriors end on a high for next year By JOSIP ZILIC NORTH Geelong Warriors closed out its National Premier League 1 season with a dominant 4-0 victory against Brunswick City. The large cheerful crowd shared its delight in fine voice to show appreciation of the newly-promoted Warriors. Prior to the match kicking off the visitors showed their respect for the Warriors’ achievement by forming a guard of honour, well received by the locals. But the side cannot rest on its laurels, off to Wollongong this weekend for the 40th annual Croatian Soccer Tournament of Australia and New Zealand. The Warriors will meet other National Premier League sides around Australia including Adelaide Raiders, Sydney United, Melbourne Knights, Dandenong City, Canberra FC and St Albans.

Against Brunswick, the Warriors took control from the outset but strong windy conditions foiled many goal attempts with the ball blowing over and wide. North Geelong’s opener didn’t come easily and it took an unexpected source to provide it two minutes from the break. Left back Nicholas Jurcic unleashed a speculative cross from 40 metres, evading everyone and lodging into the bottom left corner of goal. In the second half, the Warriors were unrelenting and set about entertaining their faithful as well as finishing strongly. In the 50th minute zippy flanker Robbie Zadworny provided, Juso Julardzija with a great out-swinging ball in the box for the forward to notch his 12th of the season. Then in the 78th minute, skipper Michael Anderson finished off a great buildup play between Nathan Long and Julardzija to make it 3-0.

To cap things off, the skipper was on hand again to close out the match in the 87th minute, pouncing on a loose ball due to a lapse in defensive concentration to slot calmly into the net. North Geelong coach Micky Colina was naturally delighted with the win. “The boys had to battle hard out there with the terrible windy conditions,” Colina observed. “Regardless they dominated and dictated the outcome, were deserved winners and deserved their promotion onto NPL for 2015.” Brunswick coach Armando Pianece wasn’t overly critical of his side, acknowledging the difficult conditions. “It comes down to decision making and they are two key areas we are really lacking in at the moment. With no relegation from NPL1, we can turn our attention to next year.”

EAST GEELONG GOLF CLUB

WITH the Sherrins stored away after a long cold winter, hundreds of local cricketers will be dusting off their gear this weekend as cricket returns. The Geelong Cricket Club starts this season’s campaign in a one day match against Carlton at Kardinia Park. The Cats boast a similar line up to last year, but the addition of Carl Sandri will provide such much needed class. The Italian international represented Sydney Thunder in last season’s Big Bash and will add some firepower

to the young line up. Geelong has a history of starting strongly and will be hoping it can continue that record when it takes to the field tomorrow. In the Geelong Cricket Association, a busy off season has seen many players change their colours, as clubs jockey for position in what looks like being a tightly contested competition. Newtown and Chilwell have lost a number of stars, including Justin Foss and Cam Alford who have returned to their junior clubs St Josephs and North Geelong respectively. But the Two Blues have added VCA gun Marc Carson as captain to ensure they remain in the mix. In other moves, Chris Bambury goes from Lara back to East Belmont, replaced by Brad Scown who has moved over from North Geelong. Bell Post Hill has been promoted from Division Two, with Simon
