Warwick's Fred Hyde, AM, has been short-listed for the 2015 Queensland Senior Australian of the Year Award for his tireless work building schools in impoverished Bangladesh.
IT’S ALL ABOUT SAVING WATER
WHILE most people slow down when they retire, 94-year-old Fred Hyde has devoted the last three decades and all of his resources - personal, physical and financial - to rescuing and educating abandoned children in Bangladesh. The World War II veteran, who hails from Warwick, has spent his life working hard to help others and earlier this week, the Member of the Order of Australia recipient was given another nod, being announced as one of four Queensland finalists for the 2015 Senior Australian of the Year Award. The modest philanthropist told the Free Times it was “a great honour” to be nominated, but said he did not rate his chances of success. “My work is mainly done outside Australia and possibly someone who is doing something in Australia for Australians will win the award,” he said. “They will need to be here to attend functions during the year and from next month on I will be in Bangladesh.” After seeing the plight of children left orphaned after a tidal wave on Bhola Island in 1970, Mr Hyde sold his house and poured all his savings into his not-for-profit organisation, Co-operation in Development. Since 1991, he has built 45 schools, five kindergartens and teacher training facilities for 165 teachers and, at present, there are 12,000 children attending Co-operation in Development schools.

Worms do hard work MORE than 50 per cent of domestic rubbish dumped at local waste facilities is organic and could be used to supercharge the garden, Southern Downs Regional Council services manager says. Tim O’Brien said organic waste is actually ‘green gold’ and can be used for very effective composting, providing the combined advantages of reducing landfill and producing a rich garden fertiliser. Southern Downs residents are able to learn about composting and worm farming at a series of free community workshops, the first of which will be held on Wednesday 29 October, at the Warwick Library, from 6pm to 8pm. “The workshops will cover a
number of topics including home composting, worm farming, recycling initiatives and tips and hints for reducing waste,” Mr O’Brien said. He said council statistics showed Southern Down residents are producing more waste each year than in previous years. “Over half of the average waste bin in the Southern Downs region is composed of garden waste, food and kitchen waste,” he said. “And while residents are recycling more, some non-recyclable materials are still going in to recycling bins and some recyclable materials are still ending up at landfill. “If you are keen to learn more
about the simple steps you can take to minimise your household’s waste, the importance of correctly sorting and separating your recyclable materials and the benefits of establishing a backyard composting or worm farming system, then our free community workshops are just for you.” Light refreshments will be provided and there will also be a compost bin or worm farm give-away to one lucky participant. Registrations for the workshop are essential as numbers are limited. To book a place at the workshop, please contact the council’s waste education team on (07) 3457 2400 or email SDRCWasteEd@ envirocom.com.au
Cooking up mental health By ALENA HIGGINS MENTAL Health Week 2014 got off to a sizzling start in the Southern Downs on Tuesday with a barbecue at Leslie Park. The free event marked the first in a string of week-long activities across Warwick and Stanthorpe aimed at raising awareness and celebrating a move towards better mental health. Organiser Terry Pinney and his team of recovery and peer support workers were present on the day to explain their roles as Lifeline Personal Helpers and Mentors (PHaMs), who are available to assist people with mood or psychiatric disorders in the Southern Downs. “We support people in the community living with mental illness and work with them, sometimes for up to 18 months, to come up with a recovery plan to enable them to live the kind of life that they want for themselves,” Mr Pinney said. Anti-drug drive POLICE traffic intercepts at the Queensland - New South Wales border and Applethorpe netted a number of drug drivers and persons carrying dangerous drugs as well as identifying a variety of traffic related offences from 1 to 3 October. Seven persons were charged with possessing methamphetamines or cannabis while the drivers of five vehicles, three of them being heavy vehicles, tested positive for driving under the influence of drugs. Operation Mike Author is one of a number of traffic operations conducted by police throughout the year which specifically target drugs in vehicles.

OPERATION Mike Joystick continues in the Stanthorpe residential area, specifically targeting a spate of property related offences over the past couple of months. Police said resident and vehicle owner complacency resulted in the theft of large amounts of property from insecure premises and vehicles. Police will continue to distribute crime prevention material to residences over the coming weeks, particularly with the influx of itinerant workers expected shortly, in an endeavour to educate them about property and personal security. The information on the leaflets is in a number of languages to cater for the visitors to the Stanthorpe area.

ABOUT a dozen more responses have been received to the Free Times’ fluoride poll, with again all bar one wanting the practice stopped. It comes as a council spokeswoman advised the cost to fluoridate Warwick and Stanthorpe’s water treatment plants was $28,000 per annum. It is not understood if this includes maintenance and depreciation of assets. The spokeswoman also confirmed there would be an “introductory paragraph” to the survey due out mid-month, but did not respond when asked about the exact wording of the preamble. Warwick residents will get the chance to hear both sides of the debate at a free fluoride information session held at the Town Hall tonight from 5.30pm. An identical session featuring a representative from Queensland Health and a member of Queenslanders for Safe Drinking Water was conducted at Stanthorpe yesterday evening. Southern Downs Regional Council has only agreed to send the survey to its water ratepayers. The Queensland Government decided in December 2007 to make fluoridation of all public water supplies serving populations greater than 1000 mandatory by 2013. However, in November 2012, following sustained pressure from the anti-fluoride lobby, the State Government effectively handed responsibility for decisions on fluoridation back to local communities.

It is watched live by about 150,000 people each night of the festival and is televised on SBS2.

And so the ‘tree jumper’ was born, which is the process of covering the local trees in a variety of mediums including crochet, felting, weaving and knitting to create living pieces of arts. The festival is now run over 10 days - and has grown to incorporate over 120 tree artworks, over

80 events, more than 20 textile art exhibitions, markets, a vintage car rally, workshops and live jazz performances. With a dedicated committee of volunteers, the festival has included new initiatives to its 2014 program including a golf day, race day and a swing dance program. Since being established, it is estimated the festival has injected over $7 million into the region. The festival prides itself on its community support and the recognition and
stimulus it gives to local community groups. The winner of the Buzz Print Events and Tourism Award will be announced at a gala dinner on Saturday 8 November, at the Events Centre Caloundra. WARWICK’S breathtaking backdrop is set to feature in a moving short film targeting depression and suicide in rural communities. “The Blue Letterbox” documents the life of Sam, a larrikin farmer, who has started painting neighbours’ letterboxes under the cover of darkness. The target letterboxes are owned by residents who have recently been through some sort of hardship. It is a gesture of kindness that has the whole town talking, but little do they know, Sam is in the midst of deep depression himself - his farm is folding, his wife and son left him for the city and the bills are piling up. Brisbane-based Fade In Productions has partnered with Spur Projects, a male suicide prevention organisation, to develop the script and create the seven-minute film, which will be submitted in the world’s largest short film festival, Tropfest Australia this month. “We chose Warwick for a few reasons,” Fade In Productions managing director Peter Johnston said. “The first being it is a community that has shown great strength through the recent hardship of floods and drought and we thought this film would represent the mateship this town has shown.” The cast and crew spent a number of days over the past several weeks filming predominately exterior scenes on the outskirts of town along Homestead and Canningvale roads. A number of lucky local extras also got their shot at the big screen. Following its launch, The Blue Letterbox will be used to start a national movement, which will be piloted in Warwick, to encourage people in rural and remote areas to paint their letterboxes blue in a sign of community camaraderie - to show that they support people sharing their feelings and they are an ambassador for positive mental health. Plea to dump dam A WEEK after Queensland’s independent Coordintor-General gave the nod to the $76 million Emu Swamp Dam project, a former Stanthorpe engineer has criticised the development calling it “nonsensical” and declaring there are more cost-effective alternatives. Bob Johnson said it is a “silly” proposition to commit considerable capital to building a dam almost 20 kilometres down river in terrain that falls rapidly from Stanthorpe and then accept the enormous expense of pumping water uphill for the lifetime of the project. “As an irrigation dam for farms close by and downriver it is perhaps sensible, but in my experience, no experienced qualified water engi-
neer, nor any persons with any common sense would even entertain the thought of doing something like this unless there was simply no alternative,” he said. Dredging Storm King Dam or extending its height were better solutions, Mr Johnson said, but ones which “council, councillors, expensive consultants and now state departmental engineers and politicians refuse to consider because they claim they are not viable". Mr Johnson, who also heads the local ratepayers and residents association, called on the powers that be to “come clean” to Stanthorpe residents on the cost of future water rates. “Are they telling you, the ratepayers of Southern Downs, what it will cost you to amortise that capital
cost? Or are they surreptitiously going to ensure that it increases only the rates of Stanthorpe ratepayers, or even worse only the water ratepayers of Stanthorpe? The sums have been done. Why don’t they be honest with us?” But staunch proponent of the project Cr Vic Pennisi said it was time to move forward, adding the outcome was a result of the contributions of many mayors, councillors, food producers, local citizens, government departments and highly qualified engineers. “Fortunately, we live in a country where freedom of speech is embraced and people can voice an opinion and they were invited to and did during the submission process,” Cr Pennisi said. “I have personally listened to the
concerns of those who have voiced them to me and respect their position. “There are many instances where water is being pumped uphill for a lot longer distance. “It is what it is and we live at the top of the hill the challenge during this process has been one of balance and balancing reliability, location, impacts and community expectations has had some challenges and going forward I am sure we will face many more.” Responses to the 33 submissions and 448 issues of address to the Environmental Impact Statement are available on Southern Downs Regional Council’s website, Cr Pennisi said.
For the love of the game By TANIA PHILLIPS WHEN you think squash in Warwick over the past decade or more it’s hard not to think of the Erskine family. Father Nick, wife Gay and sons Neil and Nev have all been permanent fixtures around the Warwick Squash competition since they moved to the area. Even though she doesn’t live in the area - Brisbane-based Melanie is a more than handy squash player. So when Nick decided to finally decided to hang up his squash racquet and retire from competitive squad in May at the age of 77 - it was
a bit of an occasion. Nick said the decision came on his own terms and while he was still fit and healthy - before an injury forced him to give up the sport he has played for so long. It wasn’t his first love though, growing up in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) Nick took up cricket first but meeting the squash-mad Gay saw him fall in love with both her and a new sport. He said he believed it was the family’s love of the sport that has kept him playing for so long. Both had distinguished squash careers in Rhodesia
- becoming the best players for their country (along with Gay’s sisters). And at one stage Gay was ranked number four in the world while her father, coming to the sport later in life, was a top veterans player in Rhodesia. THE vision of two Granite Belt foodies will come to life next week with the launch of a weekly seasonal food and wine market in Stanthorpe. The Seasonal Feast Food, Wine and Farmers' Market will be held every Friday from 3pm to 8pm in Farley Piazza, right in the centre of Stanthorpe’s CBD, starting from 17 October. It will be the go-to place for fresh, local produce and to sample some tasty treats made from the region’s bounty, according to Seasonal Feast market co-ordinators Mel Forbes and Kath Ives, who dream of it one day becoming an awardwinning market. “We look forward to seeing everyone on a Friday afternoon for their fresh local produce,” Ms Forbes said. “We hope that visiting the market will become a Friday afternoon routine, for shoppers to drop by and see what’s new in season this week.” Farmers’ markets are a vital and increasingly significant link in Australia’s food chain and provide an alternative distribution channel connecting directly with consumers. An initiative of the Southern Queensland Country Regional Food Network (SQCRFN), the market aims to stimulate the local economy, provide fresher food for the community and help the environment through lower food miles. “Our core business is providing people with the most authentic local food experience possible,” Samantha Palmer, chair of SQCRFN said. All local producers are eligible for membership of SQCRFN, and a stall at the Seasonal Feast Market. Fluoride apathy I WAS shocked that only something over 40 people replied to your Fluoride Poll. I had confidently thought that the SFT office would be inundated with several hundred responses. This is something that affects all of us. I hope people will wake up a little and respond to the poll coming with our water rates. This was a missed opportunity for everyone, renters as well as home owners, to put their case. As a people we are apathetic. We have a ‘She’ll be right, mate’ syndrome. Well, fluoride won’t be right unless enough of us make a fuss about it. And there are a great many other things that won’t be right either unless enough of us stand up and make a noise. The world is a dangerous place, and becoming more so every day. If we want to retain not just decent drinking water but our way of life we must keep abreast of what is happening and speak out - shout if necessary - and make ourselves heard. Rowan Shann, Warwick.
Elephant in the room IT ASTOUNDS me that every time alternatives to water fluoridation are suggested, the elephant in the room fluoride toothpaste - just doesn’t rate a mention. Why the obsession with swallowing this poison for no possible benefit when this intelligent alternative is freely available? Why do councils want to force it down our throats? If fluoride is really the answer to tooth decay (ignoring the obvious correctable causes, like bad diet and plain slothful neglect), why do promoters of fluoride systematically ignore the presence of fluoride toothpaste in every chemist and every supermarket in the nation, containing pharmaceuticalgrade fluoride at concentrations around one thousand times the concentration found in the water supply? Well, does fluoride prevent tooth decay or doesn’t
it? If so, here’s a ready supply accessible to everyone which can be brushed directly on the teeth at extremely high concentrations, and the excess spat out, not swallowed, as common sense dictates, and that is just what most people are already doing. So the question can reasonably be asked: Why is fluoride evidently not preventing tooth decay? It’s a fair question. Peter Davidson, Ashgrove.
Hasty exit WITH the hasty departure of the former council CEO, somewhat similar to that from the Blayney NSW Council, surely a new mindset will envelope SDRC. No more will ratepayers be taken for mugs as this survey of water supplies and the forced addition of fluoride to it, is about to be tested in the forcibly amalgamated shires. The massive rates bills, tricky valuations, diminished services and unbelievable arrogance is a start. The preamble to go to all households need only a few basic facts such as the bulky bin carrying sodium fluoride bears a clear warning “harmful if swallowed or inhaled” seek medical attention immediately should that occur. Sincere thanks to the Southern Free Times for giving council a run for its money by running their own survey. Those who can email responses to the Free Times should do so as a matter of urgency. Melba Morris, Allora.
Fluoride and ‘trooth decay’ THE Legal ‘fluoride’ mix is either NaF, Na2SiF6, H2SiF6. Ref: Section 4 Water Fluoridation Regulation 2008. Toxic industrial waste is added, chemicals such as, but not limited to arsenic, lead, mercury and uranium.
This breaches Section 204 Disobedience to statute law, section 238 Contamination of goods and section 328 Negligent acts causing harm of the Criminal Code Act 1899. The products NaF& Na2SiF6 are illegal precursors to chemical weapons. Ref: http://australiagroup.net/en/precursors.html The Lancet Neurol. 2014; 13 : 330 - 338 mentions that arsenic, lead, methylmercury, ‘fluoride’ and manganese are developmental neurotoxins. Some of many health effects mentioned in the article are autism, bipolar, ADHD, post-natal traumatic brain injury and IQ loss from small quantities. There is a dental crisis around Australia as reported in many newspapers. It is impossible to avoid absorbing ‘fluoride’. Zurich Insurance will not indemnify councils for any claims against them for damage caused to members of the public arising from water fluoridation. I was schooled and worked in Warwick for many years and have friends there with whom I stay with occasionally, so I have a keen interest in the fluoride issue. Leigh Hutton, Burpengary.
Knotty issue WE, the undernamed councillors, wish to inform the people of the Tenterfield Shire that we did not vote in favour of the council’s decision to endorse the Marriage Equality Proclamation. While we are not necessarily opposed to Marriage Equality, it is our belief that this is a moral and ethical issue on which councillors do not have the right to vote on behalf of the people who elected them. Our attempt to lodge a rescission motion was rejected by the council. Councillors Brian Murray, Donald Forbes and Michael Petrie.
Southern Downs Regional Council mayor Peter Blundell and Cr Glyn Rees press the start button of the pump at the Freestone Road Reservoir yesterday.
Allora turns on to some ‘softer’ water By ALENA HIGGINS ALLORA residents should feel the impact of a “softer” water supply over the coming weeks after Southern Downs Regional Council mayor Peter Blundell yesterday started the pump to the new Allora water pipeline. Cr Blundell said the $3.1 million project, which began in November last year, will ensure the town has a reliable and high quality water supply. “While the water available to the residents of Allora is perfectly safe to use, residents have expressed concern over the quality and the effect the water hardness has on appliances,” he said. “The council is pleased that we have addressed this issue and we
look forward to Allora residents enjoying an improved standard of water quality over the coming weeks.” The project has been a massive undertaking that has seen a 25 kilometre pipeline run from the Freestone Road Reservoir through to Womina/Willowvale Road, to the west of Mount Marshall and then directly along the New England Highway to Allora. “This means that over 4100 pipes were laid with a pumping rate of 11.5 litres /second,” Cr Blundell said. “The construction ensures that there is enough to supply Allora over twice the amount of water currently consumed in the township.” For more on the development and what it means for water ratepayers, see next week’s Free Times.

the event after viewing similar international events and seeing a gap in the domestic market. Since then, it has grown into Australia’s premier VW motorsport weekend. The second in a two-round series, the Warwick 1/8 mile track and facilities always “rates number one” for enjoyment, compared to the Sydney round, which is held in February on a more “sterile” 1/4 mile track,” Mr Hughes said. “Warwick is by far the most
enjoyed because you can camp ... and wander around without fear of being in the wrong spot,” he said. Mr Hughes said the Volkswagen’s “fascinating history”, which saw the company salvaged by the British Army after WWII, positioned it well for cult classic status. “The shape of the little car grabs your attention and Disney did us a big favour by making all the Herbie movies,” he added.

What’s On Measure of the maestro THE Stanthorpe Little Theatre is rehearsing its 10th production in the series, Shakespeare Under the Stars. Measure for Measure is one of the Bard’s lesser played comedies and is proving a challenge for both directors and cast as they grapple with the task of developing comedy and drama without letting one form detract from the other. Vincentio, (Malcolm Gamble) Duke of Vienna, takes a break from his duties leaving Angelo, (Michael Britten) to administer the law in his place. With fanatical ardour and against the advice of his counsellor, Escalus, (Gerald Embery) Angelo sentences Claudio, (Lauren Kelley) to death for getting his betrothed Mariana, (Kate Learmonth) pregnant. The lower end of town is up in arms as brothels are destroyed and the low-life is thrown in jail. Amid all this clamour, Vincentio returns disguised as a friar to see what kind of job Angelo is doing in his absence.

Not laughing yet? Well that will change as the antics of Elbow, (Chris Watt), Pompey Bum, (John Lindsay) Mistress Overdone, (Kerry Marie) and others strut their stuff. Lucio, (Matt Leigh) straddles both the comedic and dramatic scenes and draws the story together. There are new faces among the regular performers and Chris Desgrand and co-director Veronica Hammond are looking forward to presenting the finished product at Bungawarra Winery, Bents Road, Ballandean, from Friday and Saturday 31 October and 1 November at 7pm and Sunday 2 November at 6.30pm. It is also being performed at Tenterfield School of Arts on Wednesday 5 November at a time yet to be decided but whatever, it will be NSW time. Bookings are available through Bungawarra Winery on 4684 1128. For more information phone Pauline Leigh on 4681 2725.

Pressed to beat downturn By ALENA HIGGINS THE wine and grape industry needs to focus on the positives and find new innovative ways of selling to overcome the downturn, a local board director says. Speaking following his attendance at the Australia Wine Conference in Adelaide last week, Stanthorpe’s Ian Henderson acknowledged the wine industry was in “a bit of a hole at the moment”, but said “all industries go through that” and was confident it would bounce back. “We are not selling as much to the US and UK markets and domestic sales are down as we
are drinking more cider and beer,” he said. “But (the industry) is not broke and we are still making a world class product.” The founder, CEO and principal vinegar maker of Australian Vinegar was among eight directors, and the sole Queensland contingent, appointed to the Australian Grape and Wine Authority’s (AGWA) board on 1 July 2014 following the industry-supported decision to consolidate the activities of the Wine Australia Corporation and the Grape and Wine Research and Development Corporation.
He said high labour costs coupled with the global economic downturn had taken its toll on exports, but the tides were turning with new consumer confidence and growth figures from the industry’s three largest markets - US, UK and Canada - revealing positive trends. “There is a strong push to actually get wine makers in Australia confident enough to fly over there and do business with these markets,” he said. “The ones with good produce, unique offering and marketing plans are already doing that.”

Crowds upwards of 25,000 are expected to gallop to the Warwick Showgrounds for a week full of action-packed excitement when this year’s Warwick Rodeo and Gold Cup Campdraft kicks off later this month. More than 100 years of tradition and cowboy spirit combine to create the most welcoming and hospitable rodeo event in the country, CEO of Warwick Tourism and Events Tracy Vellacott said. “The audience rolls up to experience the thrill of rough stock events like bareback riding, saddle bronc riding and bull riding, while admiring the horsemanship essential for timed events like steer wrestling, team roping and barrel racing,” she said. “Riders enter in the hope of earning a paycheck and taking home a championship buckle or saddle.” Not only is the welcome mat rolled out at the showgrounds, downtown Warwick also turns

Warm, dry week set By ALENA HIGGINS RELATIVELY warm to hot weather is forecast for the coming week, with little chance of substantial rain. Temperatures will sit in the mid to high twenties for the back end of the week, with the possibility of thunderstorms on Saturday and Monday.
Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Kev Hutchins said it was “pretty typical” for this time of year. “Any precipitation will come in the form of showers or possible thunderstorms,” he said. “It’s quite different to rain where the entire sky is overcast, rain showers are
very localised - you might get one on one side of the road and the other side stays dry. “It is almost impossible to forecast how many millimetres a certain location will get over the next couple of weeks.” Any rain received is expected to between 1 and 5mm.

Dry drives solid sale NUMBERS remained steady at the Warwick Cattle Sale on Tuesday, with about 1600 head being sold. “It’s been pretty consistent with about 1500 to 1600 being sold a week for the last six weeks and today we hit around the 1600 head mark, McDougall and Sons livestock salesman David McIvor said. He said the higher numbers were driven by dryer weather and better seller conditions than two months ago. “I think these sorts of numbers will continue until we get some general rain or some general storm rain,” Mr McIvor said. “A lot of people are finding that they are running out of feed and are low on stock water.” WARWICK CATTLE REPORT - 7 OCTOBER The number of stock penned experienced very little change and the quality of the cows was not up to the previous week’s standard. Buyer attendance was good, with most major exporters present and operating along with the usual feeder and trade buyers. Young cattle received strong support from feeder operators and the trade, while export slaughter classes of heavy grown steers, bullocks and cows did not maintain the prices of the previous sale. Vealer steers to restockers made to 220c, to average 192c/kg. A fair supply of vealer heifers averaged close to 180c and a good selection to local butchers averaged 192c and made to 204.2c/kg. Heavy feeders also averaged 205c and made to 211.2c/kg. Most of the lightweight yearling heifers averaged in the 170c range and D muscled classes averaged 145c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers to feed averaged 189c and slaughter classes also averaged 189c and made to 205.2c/kg. A small sample of heavyweights made to a top of 208.2c, to average close to 188c/kg. Heavy grown steers averaged 206c and a handful of bullocks made to 215.2c/kg. Medium weight 2 score cows averaged 142c and heavy 3 scores at 171c/kg. Good heavy cows made to 190.6c, to average 184c/kg. Heavy bulls reached 227.2c/kg.

MEAT and Livestock Australia (MLA) has launched its latest lamb marketing campaign. The campaign, "You never lamb alone", focuses on the notion that lamb brings people together for all occasions and moves away from traditionally seasonally focused themes. MLA central marketing and industry insights general manager Michael Edmonds said the new theme was developed to be used year-round and could be tweaked during periods where lamb production was at its peak, like spring. "(This) will ensure we’re getting the most leverage out of our campaign and the maximum return on investment for Australia’s lamb producers," Mr Edmonds said.

Three new breeding indexes A COMPREHENSIVE review of the dairy industry’s national breeding objective (NBO) has recommended three new breeding indexes. The first is a Balanced Performance Index - to replace the current Australian Profit Ranking (APR) - that focuses on maximising net profit through production, fertility and type. The second and third are custom indexes: A Type weighted index that focuses on improved type and a Health weighted index that focuses on improved fertility and
survival (longevity). Michelle Axford from the Australian Dairy Herd Improvement Scheme (ADHIS) said the proposed new indexes took into account feedback from farmers, industry and scientists. “Three breeding indexes will give farmers more choice. This Balanced Performance Index will align to the breeding priorities of most Australian dairy farmers. The type and health weighted indexes will suit farmers with different breeding philosophies,” she said. Farmers and industry are welcome to provide feedback on the

High end of produce ers. However, mass production is not the answer; we must move away from bulk undifferentiated products to high-end, specialty produce. “Australia is not going to feed the world; we need to see ourselves not as the supermarket into Asia, but rather as the delicatessen, providing quality over quantity. “The biggest challenge in Australian agriculture at the moment is combining the benefits scale with the uniqueness of specialisation.” According to Mr Luxton, this includes innovative vegetables, with specific traits, bred for the consumer to create value and sustain profitability. Total agricultural imports into Asia are growing at an estimated 12 per cent per year according to the Australian Farming Institute

analysis - Farm Institute Insights May 2014, and while Australia’s ‘growth’ is not at the same rate, its share is of a growing market. “A lot has been made about the opportunities in the ‘Asian Century’, however, there is a sobering reality emerging that despite our geographic proximity, these opportunities will not simply fall into our lap,” Mr Luxton said. “Australian growers who successfully combine the benefits of scale with the uniqueness of specialisation will increasingly prosper. “With improved infrastructure and logistic opportunities such as that provided by the new Brisbane West airport, Australian agriculture has the chance to capitalise on our proximity to the emerging markets just to our north.”

sure Australia’s agriculture future.” Australia plays a key role in addressing the global population growth challenge. In 1950, the world’s population was just 2.5 billion; in October 2011, the global population reached seven billion, and by 2050, the Food and Agricultural Organisation of the United Nations predict a further increase of two billion people. In 1960, one hectare of land supported two people, but by 2020 that same area will need to support up to five people. “In short we need to produce more with less and technology and innovation will play an important part,” Mr Luxton said. “Asian population growth and growing food demand present a major opportunity for Australian grow-

LOCAL farmers must find a way to combine the benefits of scale, with the uniqueness of specialisation, to ensure future agriculture relevance, according to Syngenta’s Australasian head. Speaking last week at the Ag in the Asian Century conference in Toowoomba, Paul Luxton said the key challenge for Australian growers is meeting consumer demand with the provision of differentiated produce in the growing Asian market. “Agricultural export success will depend on deep insights into emerging needs and effective marketing to leverage the Australian brand and reputation,” Mr Luxton said. “Targeting segments where Australia has a competitive advantage, particularly around seasonability, quality and production will help en-

Sam the Man - a legend The
spin With Casey O’Connor email: wickets-stpe@bigpond.com
WHO says dreams don’t come true and that fairytales are not real. The naysayers who think that way obviously didn’t spend any time in front of a TV on Sunday. It was a Grand Final day to remember not just for the historic Bunnies win and the heroics of Sam Burgess but for some of the things that may have gone unnoticed in the moment. The coin toss - A challenge by NRL chief executive Dave Smith to teen Curtis Landers who broke his neck playing junior league led to the teen tossing the coin for the captains prior to the game. Landers, who was given little chance of walking following his injury, defied the odds to walk up the tunnel to do the toss. Smith gets a huge tick and Landers' performance was even more inspirational than that of Sam Burgess. Local connection - How many people noticed a local from Killarney collecting the keys to a brand new Holden vehicle after winning second prize in the Holden Monster Raffle. Congratulations. Running late - The Bulldogs are reportedly set to be fined $50,000 for arriving on the field five minutes late. An expensive aside to the old axiom “they can’t start without us”. Hasler clearly intended to delay his team’s entry onto the field in a bid of one upmanship that obviously backfired. Not sure the Dogs CEO will be all that happy after she provided a statement in writing that the Bulldogs would immediately follow the Rabbitohs onto the field. Should have checked with Des! Final whistle - Was the Grand Final Shayne Hayne’s swansong? Strong rumour that the veteran whistleblower was considering retirement post grand final - hard to find a Queenslander who would be disappointed. Sweet - In the ultimate surprise during grand final week, Frank Pritchard’s manager, Mario Tartak, commissioned a mural of the enforcer outside the “Cake It Away” franchise at Merrylands. Sweet Frank - not exactly. Oh no - Again we have to ask - who arranged the pre-game entertainment which did not even rate a pass mark with those I have spoken to. Seems to be the one area, the NRL cannot get right on Grand Final day. Not one of the epic failures of the past but certainly not a winner. Write maybe - play definitely not - they watch and analyse each and every play throughout the season and give their “expert” commentary but the boot was on the other foot when the Sin Bin scribes took to the field for a game of touch football against the Australian women’s team with the stadium gates opening on Sunday. The result was not pretty for the media team which included Brett Finch, Josh Perry and Matt Shirvington. Fifteen minutes and seven tries later the scribes were put out of their misery - game short and sharp (for the girls) over. Couple of "athletes" found their way into the ice bath in the Doggies rooms following the game. One plane, two stories - The Broncos and the Northern Pride were up and off after their respective games on Sunday. Both Queensland teams were straight to the airport after the game, not waiting for the main game. The Broncos returned home heartbroken after a missed goal from the sideline on the stroke of full time that would have sent the game into extra time. The Pride who no-one south of the border gave any chance - showed real Queensland grit as they clawed back from a 12-point deficit to beat Penrith. Great to see a team of almost amateur footballers, showing a bunch of professionals what the game is really all about. Queenslanders! Queenslanders - Call me biased if you will but did you count the number of Queenslanders on display in the Bunnies line up - take out
Grand final hero Sam Burgess, a fracture to his eyesocket and his cheekbone in the early moments of the game failed to stop his match-winning performance.
Darling Downs Suns bowler in action against Wide Bay Flames on Saturday. The Suns went down to the Flames by two runs in a close game.
the Poms and Queenslanders and the warren looked a little barren. Good signs for future Origin sides; reckon Mal was grinning wherever he watched the game. Olympic proportions - Cathy Freeman stole the show at the Sydney 2000 Olympics and Australia’s golden girl of the track was one of Madge Maguire’s secret weapons. Freeman, a staunch Bunnies fan, urged the Rabbitohs to “win their moment” in a secret pre-match inspirational talk. Freeman was a guest in the Rabbitohs dressing rooms to soak up the celebrations post grand final. For sale - The big end of town looks set to join Russell Crowe in the owners circle at the Rabbitohs. Strong rumour that James Packer is about to finalise the purchase of Peter Holmes a Court’s share in the Rabbitohs, to complete a dramatic week for the club. Packer’s Crown Resorts is the major sponsor of the Rabbitohs and has been strongly linked with a buyout of Holmes a Court’s 37.5 per cent stake. The ring - First Isaac Luke was not going to be allowed on to the field to join the celebrations - stupidity - everyman and his dog and then some were on the field. No premiership ring - harsh but probably correct. Crowe commissioned a special premiership ring for the suspended half back who played a major role in getting the Bunnies to the Grand Final. Was he that sure of the win or covering all bases? That crowd- A record 83,833 of them. The effect created by Rabbitoh and Bulldog fans was extraordinary - My one regret of the Grand Final - I wasn’t there to make it 83,834 and experience it first-hand. New respect - After watching the game, I have a renewed respect for the often maligned Pommie players. James Graham - uncompromising, tough with a great attitude matched only by a head that must be harder than cement - just ask Sam and unsung hero Dave Tyrell. The other Burgess boys - glad your sticking around. The final word to one of the finest and most talented front rowers we have seen come out of the old dart - Sam Burgess - a name that will be revered along-side John Sattler by Bunnies fans for generations to come. Let’s hope he returns to the Burrow. The result - A pure fairytale. Sorry Doggies fans but the planets aligned; the footy gods smiled and the Bunnies ran away with the trophy. An outstanding grand final where the final score possibly did not reflect the true character of the game. Individual brilliance from Sam Burgess + an outstanding team effort = South Sydney premiership 43 years in the making. The stuff of legends. And the winner - Undoubtedly - Rugby League, the greatest game of all. - Casey
and Jim Mitchell while Dylan Barraclough had the Best Gross. Angelo Maugeri was on song at the 12th taking the pin shot and the 17th went the way of Jason Day. The Pro Pin belonged to Angelo Maugeri and Dick Hilton snavelled the final meat tray. The Stanthorpe club is holding their Mixed Foursome championship competition this Sunday and Sporters are reminded that although tee-off times remain normal (between 8am - 8.30am) all players will tee off at the first tee. PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT Summit Bowlers spent plenty of time on the greens last weekend in preparation for their Pennant clash this weekend with the Downs sides. There looks to be plenty of players in fine touch and looking for some excellent results this weekend. While the Pennants’ boys were getting down to business there was plenty of action in the social competitions - two bowl triples. Players welcomed back Jamie Zamprogno who partnered P. Parker Dale Stanley and M. Sweeney. Their score of 15 however was not good enough to topple Quentin Stanley R. Newlands T. Sweeney and R. Capelli (19). B. Brown, A. White and L. Covill (22) proved too strong for Team Parker (C O and R) (12). In the other game, A. Zamprogno E. Zanatta and N. Gale (28) defeated K. Empen W. Thomas and R. Slack (15). There has been plenty of work in recent weeks done by the club’s band of volunteers to ensure the greens are in top order for the upcoming Apple Blossom Carnival on 25 and 26 October. The club wishes to thank Zel, Paul, Dale Len and Darren who completed the final touches on the edging of the top green which now looks a picture. The Apple Blossom Carnival has been the club’s signature event for many years, and this year the headline weekend has standalone day competitions as well as an overall weekend trophy with prize money totalling $2000. It promises to be a wonderful event, so skips get your teams. If you are able to assist with sponsorship, contact the club. Of course volunteer help is also welcomed and if you can assist in this area, contact Artie White, Darren Stanley or Alex Mattiazzi at the club. What else is in the pipeline at the Summit? Today (Thursday 9 October) is Ladies Day with visitors very welcome. Saturday (11 October) the Pennant side plays the Downs in Toowoomba (bowlers are asked to assemble at Brian Wilmot’s home at 6.15am) and back at the ranch there will be Social Bowls commencing at 1pm.
GRAND FINAL PERFORMANCE FOR LYNAM IT might have taken the Rabbits 43 years to find the winner’s circle last Sunday, the same can’t be said for Mark Lynam. In a grand final performance Lynam added another Sunday Sporter’s win to the list. Keith Green would have had a “Bulldog” Day finishing in the runner’s-up spot and was seen licking his wounds and leaving with a meat tray. Run-downs went to Angelo Doorley
Stanthorpe junior cricketers attended a cricket camp at the CF White Oval during the school holidays.
Suns batsman plays an on-drive in the game against the Ipswich Lightning on Sheahan Oval last Sunday. In another close game the Lightning won by nine runs. Saturday 18 October is Trophy Afternoon ($100 prize; $15 entry per player). SWEET SUCCESS FOR MORRISON It was sweet success for Kath Morrison in Friday’s Red Rooster Rumble. Morrison took out the weekly event with a score of 27 points relegating Peter Millard to the runner’s-up position. Run down balls went to James Jerome, Ben O’Dea, Charlie Morrison, and Joely Singleton. Peter Millard, Charlie Morrison and John Devitt collected pins on five, seven and nine respectively. BUSH KIDS CHARITY BIG HIT ONE hundred players hit the fairways in the very popular Bush Kids Charity Golf Day last Sunday in Warwick Winner of best nett in the four ball Ambrose event was Team Hinze. Geoff, Sam, Indy and Lacey Hinze finished with 54.5 only slightly ahead of runners-up Kath and Charlie Morrison and Bill Terry and Jason Wurth with a score of 54.875. Gerard Kane, Derek Kane, Greg Eather, and Bruce Greenaway finished with the Best Gross Score (60) edging out Brad Rose, Danny Cox, Ro Cox and Jamie Saunders. The October Monthly Medal sponsored by Warwick Real Estate was decided last Saturday with Brendon Jones claiming Division One with a score of 66 nett. Runner-up was Gary Russell-Sharam. Division Two went the way of Ken Burley (nett 62) ahead of Gordon Kerr (nett 63). Ben O’Dea had the best round of the Juniors finishing with 70 nett. Collecting run downs went to 69. Pins shots went to Ron Simon (5), John Francis (7 and 11), Peter Millard (9), Eamon Cockram (11) and Trevor King (16). This Saturday the Warwick golf club is holding the Big W charity golf day, a four ball Ambrose event with tee times and single spots still available. This is shaping as a great day with incredible trophies and plenty of opportunities to win good booty with all profits going to the Children’s Hospital Foundation. Tee off is from 7am until 12.30pm and is open to members and non members alike. Sunday is the club’s mixed foursomes championships played over 36 holes and is sponsored by Style Shoes. The timesheet is in the pro shop or ring 4661 3664. There is certainly plenty on the club’s calendar in coming weeks. A reminder that Sunday 19 October is the Darling Downs Golf Association’s championships (played in Warwick) with trophies in A, B and C grades. This promises to be another great day and members are encouraged to play and support this annual regional event - and the trophies are pretty impressive too. ALL ROADS TO ALLMAN PARK RACING attention turns to Allman Park Warwick for the running of the Warwick Credit Union Cup and the Frasers Livestock Transport Newmarket. The club has received strong nominations for the six-race programme. Sixteen runners were nominated for the cup at the close of nominations. One of the fancied runners is Toowoomba galloper Hit the Road Jack from the Kevin Kemp stable. The four-year-old gelding will be stepping up in distance. Others sure to have good support are the don baker-trained Ellie La Vie who has a win over 1625m to her credit on the new Toowoomba turf and the Lacey Morrison galloper Tea Tattle. The Newmarket has attracted a small but ultra competitive field of eight. Local trainer Len Bryant will saddle up Street Sister in the event. The seven-year-old mare returned from a 12-month lay off in September and despite a lack of recent racing has a liking for her home track.

Flying the Stanthorpe flag: Former Stanthorpe players Hayden Lanza, left, and Dean Sullivan, right, picture with Souths captain Ben Staley, middle, played in the Bulls Masters T20 challenge. The meeting has been well supported by Toowoomba trainers and it should be an outstanding day of racing on the cards. Warwick Cup day has something for everyone from the Cassels Automotive Trackside Marquee, live music, the lawn party and a fabulous Fashions on the Field competition. For marquee booking, contact the club. WESTPAC INVITATION IT is time to dust off your favourite golfing duds and prepare for the highlight of the golfing year - the Westpac Warwick Invitational Golf Day, Friday 17 October. The day begins at 10am with registrations. Lunch and wine will be served on the deck from 11am, and the gun will shoot at noon to signal the beginning of play. This year’s event is a two-ball Ambrose, providing a great opportunity for players to team up with a new member, potential player or a good mate who would not turn up for a single event. The Westpac day is always one of the most popular on the calendar of events and is open to members and non members.
Bookings and payments can be made at the Pro shop and the fee ($100) covers lunch, wine, beer (till the end of play), and did I mention golf. ALMOST THERE THE hard working committee of the Stanthorpe Jockey club has been busy putting the final touches on the track and amenities at Armstrong Park for their big Caulfield Cup Day meeting on Saturday 18 October. The meeting includes the running of the Central Motors Stanthorpe Cup. President Chips Brunckhorst said recently that everything was in readiness for one of Stanthorpe’s signature events. The president said there had been plenty of interest in the meeting from visitors to the district and the club is expecting another bumper crowd. Once again reserved seating and lunches will be available in the huge marquee - but time is running out to book, so if you have not done so yet you should be contacting club secretary Jill Brunckhorst.
Tom Donald prepares to take aim on the ICOR shoot.
IN THE HUNT AGAIN MAX Hunter wound back the clock to take out the October monthly medal in Stanthorpe last Saturday with a nett 64. Hunter finished one stroke clear of Stephen Hooper after a countback was required to determine the runner-up. Greg Yap settled for a run down after the countback. Luke Reardon took most of the minor prizes, both pin shots 3/12 and 17, the birdies nest, the best gross of 70 and least putts with 23. He did leave a few - Pro-pins were won by Mick O’Brien at 1/10, Stephen Hooper at 5/14 and Matt Leigh at 9/18. Ian Harvey also held a share of the birdies nest. Other run downs to Kev Rowling and Trevor Ludlow. The Ladies event was won by Neta Thouard with nett 72 ahead of runner-up Lyn Ludlow (nett 76). Neta also had best gross of 95 and Lyn once again had best approach at 17 and the putting was a dead heat. Another big weekend of golf is planned in Stanthorpe. Saturday is a single stableford event sponsored by Heritage Bank with proceeds to be donated to Breast Cancer Research. Pink of course is the order for the day and the club looks forward to seeing some interesting outfits. Tee off from 11.30am. The Mixed Foursomes championships sponsored by Repco will be played on Sunday - 27 holes for the championship and commence at 9.30am after Sporters tee off. Time sheets for all events, including the Open are on the board. DONALD’S DAY TOM Donald had a successful day in the Pistol shoot at Inglewood last Sunday. Donald took out the Gully Gongs IPSC Shoot ahead of second placed Lynne Shepherd who finished just ahead of Wal Shepherd in third spot. Donald continued that form into the ICOR Shoot to finish ahead of Wal Shepherd and Ray Dudgeon in that event. In the remaining event, a 25 Metre Standard Pistol competition honours went to Wayne Duffy ahead of Phil Neal and Ray Dudgeon who picked up another third placing. This weekend shooters at the Inglewood
SSAA can look forward to a day of clays. BULLS MASTERS T20 CHALLENGE THE Bulls Masters Twenty20 challenge held in Stanthorpe last weekend is being hailed a great success by players officials and organisers. After six games in the knock-out competition, the Gold Coast Thunder defeated the Ipswich Lightning in the final on Sunday. The Darling Downs side which included two former local Stanthorpe players Dan Sullivan and Hayden Lanza was mentored by former Australian coach John Buchanan. I spoke with mentors John Buchanan, former Australian quick Carl Rackemann and Craig Jesberg (former Australian Country captain) who were blown away by the standard of the local facilities. Hayden Lanza who had success with bat and ball came in for special mention from Buchanan who was impressed with the all rounder's ability. Lanza has recently moved to Brisbane and is currently playing with Wests in the Brisbane competition. Captain of the local South’s cricket team, Ben Staley also relished the opportunity to play in the prestigious Round Robin. Staley was a last-minute call up for the Wide Bay Flames. The local Stanthorpe Cricket Association competition kicks off this weekend.
