Lazing on a Sunday afternoon By JONATHON HOWARD IT WAS just another lazy Sunday for music lovers at Peregian Orginals over the weekend. Noosa Today photographer Darryn Smith took this happy snap of Nikki Greentree of Alexandra Headland, Annthea Carroll of Bli Bli and Maranda Carroll of Noosa, enjoying the tunes and sunshine. The Peregian Originals is going from strength to strength with record attendance and rave reviews. Check out more of the Peregian Originals photos and story on page 10.
Council’s cards on table THE battle to expand Noosa’s boundary has entered a new phase this week after the Noosa Council was called upon to publicly back the EDV re-boundary bid. Noosa councillors will this week consider a submission from the EDV Residents Group Inc seeking support for a boundary re-alignment to include Eumundi, Doonan, Verrierdale, Weyba Downs and Peregian Beach (west) into Noosa Council. The letter was submitted by EDV
Residents Group Inc president Johanne Wright and details the formation of the group in 2004 and its total membership of 230, with a further 890 residents on the EDV email database. Ms Wright said the EDV Group was seeking a “public statement of support” from the Noosa Council which would form an “essential” part of the submission to the minister. The recommendation before councillors has four sections two of which includes: recognise that proposed boundary change issues should be initiated by the local com-
munity that is affected by the proposed change and if the change was to occur Noosa Council would welcome the EDV community to Noosa. The EDV Group is facing an uphill battle against the Sunshine Coast Council, who is determined to block the re-boundary bid, while The Sunshine Coast Alliance Inc has also stepped up its campaign to block the move. Meanwhile, Minister for Local Government David Crisafulli made headlines last month after he circulated a letter which at first appeared to quash the re-boundary bid.
Mr Crisafulli has repeatedly told media sources that any re-boundary bid would “only proceed with the support of both councils”. However, Ms Wright supported the EDV’s case for a boundary change by referring to the 2005 doorknock campaign which, she said, covered an estimated 85 per cent of all residents in the EDV suburbs. “EDV found that 80 per cent of residents supported a boundary change, together with the majority of local businesses,” she wrote. The EDV Group also commis-

sioned an indicative survey this year which was carried out by market research company D-Sipher. “EDV believes that this survey showed a commonality of interest with the Noosa Shire and confirmed the very high support for boundary realignment,” Ms Wright wrote. “Clearly for EDV to go ahead, we need support from the Noosa Council.” Noosa councillors were expected to cast a final vote on the matter during council’s ordinary meeting on Thursday, 23 October.

Cruising for disability By JONATHON HOWARD NOOSA’S business community and an X Factor finalist are organising a special river cruise next month to help Petra Geitl and her son Jack buy a suitable disability access vehicle. Eight-year-old Jack was born with cerebral palsy and although he enjoys a happy lifestyle, transporting him to his weekly activities can be challenging for Petra. Jack has captured the hearts of many Noosa residents and the family is calling for some assistance to afford the disability vehicle. “We attend more than 15 different activities for Jack every week as well as Jack attending school,” she said. The latest fund-raising initiative is a sunset cruise organised by Noosa River and Canal Cruises. The cruise has also prompted a number of other businesses to support the family appeal and X Factor 2010 finalist Andrew Lawson has also signed up as the performer onboard the cruise. Noosa River and Canal Cruises owners Kym and Gary Logan said they had seen the appeal to help Petra and Jack in Noosa Today and wanted to come up with an innovative fund-raising idea. Elegant Eggplant owners James and Mimi Zaraza on Gympie Terrace have also thrown their support behind the cruise by providing a range of delicious canapes. at a cost of $60 per person which includes food, alcohol and a 1.5hour cruise around the Noosa River. Businesses are also being encouraged to get onboard with the fund-raising initiative by contrib-
uting to the cruise package or directly to the Geitl family. For more information, phone Noosa River and Canal Cruises marketing manager Danielle Mulherin on 0423 006 885 - or contact Noosa Today on (07) 5455 6946.
A ‘SELFIE’ image has helped police track down a Noosaville man who was allegedly filming up young girls’ skirts as they walked on Shorehaven Drive, Noosaville. The man had allegedly dobbed himself in by filming his own face on the hidden camera. A passer-by later found the camera and contacted police. A check of the footage revealed the man had taken the selfie, which provided police with a crucial lead. The image of the man was released by police on Friday (10 October) and with the help of media and members of the public spread across social media and led to the man’s arrest. Detectives have charged the 29-year-old Noosaville man with two counts of alleged indecent treatment of a child under 16. Police allege the man hid a camera at Noosaville at an angle where footage could be taken up the dresses of females. It will be alleged that two girls, aged 11 and 15, were filmed. Sunshine Coast Child Protection Unit Officer in Charge Detective Senior Sergeant Phil Hurst told media the incidence, known as “upskirting”, had become common on the coast. “We’ve seen people putting cameras on the tops of shoes to film or people are holding their mobile phones down,” he said. “It (the camera) was concealed low on the ground with the potential of viewing up the skirts of people, which is what has happened here.” Police have thanked the public for their assistance in helping identify the alleged offender. The man is due to appear in Noosa Magistrates’ Court on November 4.
Coolum, with a Gold Coast touch JAPANESE developer Sekisui House has unveiled concept designs for its $1 billion Yaroomba development near Coolum. The plans were released last week and revealed 17 buildings, including five 10-storey buildings that are considered higher than many 12-storey buildings in Mooloolaba. The company is proposing a five-star resort hotel with about 1500 apartments and 3000 square metres of retail space. But in order to submit a development application with Sunshine Coast Council next year, Sekisui needs council to amend the current four-storey height limit for the site. Sekisui senior development manager Evan Aldridge attempted to address community concerns that Sekisui was bringing the Gold Coast to Coolum. “The size of the development we’re proposing is only half what has been reported in some
of the media and we believe that we’ve got a very good managed, controlled development that sits within the site,” he said. Mr Aldridge said the company would lodge a development application with council late next year. Meanwhile, residents have described the plans as “worse than they had first thought”. “If the town plan only allows for eight metres and these clearly would be 30 to 40 metres high - then why is this even being considered,” said one protester during recent council meetings. “Sunshine Coast residents must be aware that if the Sunshine Coast council can change the town plan to accommodate this then they can change the town plan anywhere to accommodate any horrendous development on the coast.” YOUR THOUGHTS: Have you seen the latest development plan - do you support of reject the development? No stone unturned By JOLENE OGLE
The nude Olympics takes place at Alexandria Bay every year with the next one in March 2015.
Passing the naked buck By JONATHON HOWARD A PUSH to make Alexandria Bay Queensland’s first official nude beach continues to gain momentum via a petition this month – but not everyone is happy with the idea. A total of 230 people have now signed the online petition which has a target of 1000 signatures and is being directed towards QLD Premier Campbell Newman, State member for Noosa Glen Elmes and Noosa Council Mayor Noel Playford. The online petition was posted by Free Beach Australia advocate Bill Hainsworth and features a range of comments in support. Comments ranged from the benefits of tourism dollars from A-Bay and the need for Queensland to shrug off its conservative past and move into the 21st century. “Wake up politician – discard your suit and be free,” petition signer Andrew Martin wrote on the thepetition.
com website. The petition highlighted Queensland as needing a “legal clothing optional beach” to enjoy the natural side of nude swimming and sunbathing. But not everyone is happy with the idea and Noosa Police were again called into action to visit A-Bay and issue infringement notices to those going nude. The complaint came from a Noosa mother, who did not want to be named, and said she was fed up with “naked zombies” walking too close. The mother said naked men who approach women and who are “sitting in the main public pathway exposing their genitals” should not be allowed to do so. She has detailed her “disturbing experiences walking through Alexandria Beach.” “I am not against discrete nude sunbathing and swimming out of view from the general clothed public,” she said. “But what I have experienced several times passing through Alexandria Beach has been very shocking and disturbing.”
Meanwhile, nude advocates have called for signage to warn locals and visitors that they could encounter nude sunbathers. Several residents have suggested the signs read, “Caution naked sunbathers have been seen in this area - if nudity offends do not enter”. Other nudists are directing their frustration towards the State Government and Noosa Council for passing the buck. “When will State and local Governments deal with the issue and stop passing it back and forward,” one resident, who did not want to be named, wrote. “Queensland wants a nude beach.” HAVE YOUR SAY: Should A-Bay have nude warning signs? And do you think Queenslanders are too prudish for an official nude beach? Email your thoughts to newsdesk@noosatoday. net.au
NOOSA is a safer place to live, work and raise a family, according to Police Minister Jack Dempsey who visited Noosa last week to release the latest crime statistics. According to the statistics, most reportable offences are down, including robbery, which is down 50 per cent when compared to last year’s figures. Mr Dempsey praised the efforts of the community and local police for bringing down the local crime rate and said team work was the key to fighting crime. “Thank you to our local, hardworking police, but also the community of Noosa. “We have seen the Noosa community working with police like never before,” he said. “It’s a great credit to the community spirit we see here. “Noosa certainly is a safer place to live, work and raise a family.” Member for Noosa Glen Elmes said the statistics demonstrate how hard the local police are working and how great a place Noosa is to live. “It goes to show, we live in a very safe community… a community that cares about itself,” he said. According to the data, reported assaults have also decreased, down by 20 per cent, and unlawful entry is down 43 per cent on last year. Most reportable offences have decreased with the exception of sexual offences, in-

Mr Dempsey said the increase in reported sexual offences could be due to an increase in confidence in the police. “In previous years there used to be a lot of non-reporting, particularly in sexual offences. Particularly in areas where there are threats and intimidation pushed on to the community,” he said. “I think one of the biggest aspects and flow on from our criminal gang legislation is that the community has more confidence now, and that has been reported as a significant rise, to actually report these offences and understand they are going to be significantly followed through.” Mr Dempsey urged anyone who is the victim of an offence to come forward and report the incident to police. “I say to anybody out there, if someone has committed an offence, please come through because police will leave no stone unturned in finding the offender.” he said.

Mach Technology's managing director Paul Pettigrew.
Heartache on high-tech loss By JONATHON HOWARD THE managing director of Mach Technology, based at Noosa Civic, has spoken for the first time about losing the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) contract with Noosa Council and the company’s hopes for the future. Mach Technology’s managing director Paul Pettigrew said the company had worked for many years under contract with the previous Noosa Council, prior to de-amalgamation. “We started Mach Technology in Sydney, but I specifically moved the business up to Noosa in order to provide the best possible local support to the then Noosa Council, he said. But when tenders for Noosa Council’s ICT systems were put out for expressions of interest during the de-amalgamation process in 2013, the Noosa Council’s interim CEO Peter Franks selected TechnologyOne based in Sydney. TechnologyOne has since integrated Noosa Council’s ICT and financial systems as well as being the first council in Australia to run the new Ci Anywhere 4.03 version of enterprise content management (ECM) that reduces manual data entry and is delivered through a web browser interface. The contract loss was a devastating blow to Mach Technology and Mr Pettigrew said he still does not understand the interim CEO’s decision. “We had worked extremely hard to develop the best possible ICT solution for Noosa Council, at a fraction of the price, he said. “I cannot speculate what was in the mind

of the interim CEO and therefore drove his decision - all I know is he said to me that the all-from-one supplier Tech1 having already selected them for the financial system Finance1 was efficient to him. “My reservations that they were not expert in the scope tendered (ICT infrastructure managed services), were countered by enthusiasm to be their first customer in this area - and associated promises made. Mr Pettigrew stressed that the decision was not made by the current councillors or CEO Brett De Chastel, who formed the council following Mr Franks’ decision. “I realise this decision was out of the hands of the current council, he said. “However, I hope that when the contract is up for tender in about 18 months, the council will consider Mach Technology as a future long-term and local business option. Noosa Today contacted Noosa Council CEO Brett De Chastel to ask when the current contract with OneTechnology would expire. “When the term of the current contract is up for review there will be a chance for all potential applicants to submit a bid for the ICT tender and this will be considered by council, Mr De Chastel said. Mr Pettigrew said he was already receiving some early support from within the council ranks. “I cannot name anyone at this stage, but there’s been some early support from within council and Mach Technology would certainly hope to be in with a chance to secure the ICT contract in the future, he said.

Life Savers from Peregian Beach Surf Life Saving Club could be thrown a lifeline by the Noosa Heads club. 128997 Korean restaurant Kimchi manager Insun Kwak says business has been good in the Junction since opening recently.
It's so far, Sogo good By JONATHON HOWARD
Deep waters at Peregian Beach By JONATHON HOWARD CRUCIAL surf life saving operations could soon be bolstered at the Peregian Beach Surf Life Saving Club after Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club applied to take over the club’s operations through a Noosa Council motion this week. Peregian Beach Surf Club was closed earlier this year due to mounting financial issues and the move follows a commitment from Surf Life Saving Sunshine Coast, based in Mooloolaba, to continue rescue and club operations at Peregian Beach.
The recommendation before Noosa councillors this week includes granting a 12 months permit for Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club to establish life saving and club activities at Peregian Beach. The motion also recommends the authorising of the CEO to enter negotiations for a 20 year lease to Noosa Heads and more broadly recommends the introduction of new rescue equipment and local membership recruitment drives. In 1993, the Peregian Beach Surf Life Saving Club (PBSLSC) and the then council signed a twenty-five-year lease over the
clubhouse area at 11 Kingfisher Drive, Peregian Beach, with the lease expiring in 2018. “The Noosa Shire area is serviced by three surf lifesaving clubs with PBSLSC being the smallest of the three in terms of active patrolling membership,” the council documents reveal. “In recent years PBSLSC has found it more challenging to operate across its range of operations and has relied on Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club and Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) to support its beach patrol operations. “In recent months PBSLSC’s
challenges have become more acute, culminating in advice from the club to Council that SLSQ had enacted ‘step in’ measures. “Subsequently, PBSLSC has considered a range of management options to increase financial viability, one of which involved NHSLSC assuming responsibility for all club operations including volunteer beach patrols (at no cost to Council) - this option was endorsed by PBSLSC.” Councillors were expected to make a final vote on the recommendation during next week’s ordinary meeting (Thursday, 23 October).

SOGO Bar Noosa owners Kathy and Lavi Gil have quashed rumours the Sunshine Beach Road bar was facing closure, as the couple continues lease negotiations with plaza management. Ms Gil said the family-run business was “here to stay” but she was awaiting word about a new lease from Noosa Junction Plaza management. Noosa Today attempted to contact plaza management, but they declined to comment on behalf of the owners at this stage. Ms Gil said the closure rumour had been circulating for almost two years. “We are here to stay,” she said. “We’ve got some great events coming up including our Octoberfest on Saturday 11 October, and our Halloween Party 31 October.” Meanwhile, business activity in Noosa Junction is showing signs of improvement following several positive reports from new businesses. Kimchi Korean Restaurant has also reported a positive response from locals and visitors, following its opening at Arcadia Street off Sunshine Beach Road, about a month ago. Everyone is welcome to attend the Breast Cancer Network Australia Pink Lady Day at the Eumundi Market amphitheatre on 25 October from 9am.
Field of pink dreams LB30: Celia Maloney, Val Jones, founder Wendy Wilson, Karen Croasdaile and Bluette Krogh.
Girls make the link up By JOLENE OGLE IT is certainly an unconventional way to look for friends, but for Wendy Wilson, placing an advertisement in the local paper has yielded great results. “I come from a small village in Scotland and when I moved here I was lonely, and I was missing my girl network. “I knew it couldn’t be just me who felt like this, so I put an ad in the paper,” she said. “It said ‘if you like cocktails at sunset or if you like giggling in the movies, then get in touch’. The response was overwhelming.” Wendy received such a great response, she began the group Life Be-
yond 30 that now has 350 members throughout Noosa who get together regularly for social events. “Life Beyond 30 (LB30) is something for me. It is somewhere I can go and be with friends,” she said. “We have a huge spread of ages, from 30 right up to 71. Anyone who likes a bit of fun, really.” For long-time member Bluette Krogh, LB30 provided a new lease on life. “I feel like a teenager again. I’m doing things I have never done before,” she said. night, or the art group, which recently met to decorate bras for Pinktober. The bras will be used to raise funds for the McGrath Foundation and breast cancer research and to also attempt to beat the current world record for the longest bra chain which is due to be held early next year. The current record is held by the New Zealand Girl Guides and stretches an impressive 178 kilometres. More details of the record attempt as well as information on how to donate bras will be released shortly. Those who would like to find out more about LB30 should visit www. lifebeyond30.com.au.
ON 25 October, the Eumundi Markets hill will be alive with a sea of pink in support of breast cancer survivors. The mini field of pink women silhouettes is the initiative of the Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) which supports Australians affected by breast cancer. Local musician and event organiser Tracey Combes is a breast cancer survivor and is urging locals to attend the event from 9am and place a pink lady in the field to honour friends and family who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Ms Combes said most people in the local community will know someone affected by breast cancer. “Around 15,000 women are expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer in Australia this year alone,” she said.
“Every time a woman is told she has breast cancer, the impact extends to her family, friends and those around her in the community. “Providing support for women and families affected by breast cancer is important for our local community. “Eumundi Markets mini field of women is an excellent opportunity for locals to rally together and offer their support to those affected - be it our mates, our family or perfect strangers.” Funds raised from the event will directly assist BCNA to support Australians who have been personally affected by breast cancer. This support includes providing the My Journey Kit, a free comprehensive information resource for women newly diagnosed with breast cancer.

Marion’s works are web based By JOLENE OGLE
Surfrider Foundation Sunshine Coast members and Parks and Wildlife staff put in a massive effort to clean up the beach last year.
A load of rubbish By JONATHON HOWARD ONE of Australia’s most pristine coastlines from Noosa North Shore to Double Island Point is become a dumping ground for trashy holiday makers. While the majority of campers do the right thing, a growing number of campers left their campsites strewn with garbage following school holidays and the Labour Day long weekend. Surfrider Foundation Sunshine Coast and Parks and Wildlife QLD are now preparing for another weekend garbage collection on the 29 to 30 November and they need more volunteers to help out. The most disgusting discovery was
a portable toilet that was left behind by one camper last year, forcing Surfrider Foundation volunteers and Parks and Wildlife staff to carefully remove the loaded loo. Surfrider Foundation Sunshine Coast president Craig Macintyre said rubbish on the North Shore was now a constant problem. “People really need to see the damage they are causing by leaving their rubbish behind,” he said. “The impacts can be devastating to wildlife and marine life and without more volunteers it’s becoming difficult to keep on top of.” Several camp goers have also highlighted ‘mad drivers’ along the beach who are allegedly performing dangerous driving manoeuvres.
The beach has become a hot destination for boozy weekends, said one camper, who did not want to be named. “It used to be a problem, but these days it’s out-of-control.” The foundation is calling for a legion of volunteers to sign up and help with the clean-up efforts to reduce waste and maintain the coastlines natural beauty. “Each year Surfrider volunteers give up their time to scour the beach and last year the garbage collection weighed in at two tonnes,” Mr Macintyre said. To find out more about becoming a Surfrider Foundation volunteer visit: www.surfrider.org.au or email Mr Macintyre: surfridersunshinecoast@ gmail.com
UNIVERSITY student and Noosa local, Marion Brown, currently has a one-eyed turtle and two lorikeets in her care, but she didn’t let that distract her from gaining a near perfect grade point average. Marion, who graduated from the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) last week, completed her studies with a GPA of 6.96 out of a possible 7, and the top honour of Chancellor’s Medal. The Chancellor’s Medal is presented to graduating students who have made outstanding contributions to the University and the wider community and who have achieved a high academic level. Marion, who is a veterinary surgeon, can now add a Bachelor of Environmental Science to her list of qualifications.
“I love to study and am fascinated by the natural world,” she said. “I find it frustrating in the veterinary world as some things remain unanswered and I always want to know more. I grew up on the Sunshine Coast and I love this area and want to know more about our Biosphere and how to conserve it in the face of rapid human development.” Marion will now begin her honours thesis, which will focus on food webs on our local beaches, and said returning to study has “rekindled” her passion for working with animals. “I love to work outside and having the opportunity to do my research on some of the world’s finest beaches makes me feel very privileged,” she said. “I like to feel that my work is important and can directly benefit biodiversity conservation.”
Marion Brown will study food webs on local sandy shorelines as part of her honours thesis. 128994

Sketch makes a statement By JOLENE OGLE LOCAL business Sketch, Noosa Junction, has been dressing women is stylish, designer gowns for more than 30 years. Designer and business owner Gaibriel Hudson first opened Sketch in 1984, and is proud to celebrate 30 years in the industry. Gaibriel was formally trained by her grandmother, who made clothes for the then first lady, Margaret Whitlam. The art of designing and creating clothing came naturally to Gaibriel, who won the QLD Fashion Design Award for resort wear, as well as a swag of awards for swimwear, formal wear and city wear, throughout her career, and a feature in the bi-centennial edition of Studio magazine. Add to the already impressive resume, an invitation to showcase her clothing at Expo 88, photo shoots in Paris, features in major magazines, and many celebrities who own one of Gaibriel’s designs. Gaibriel stocked Sketch with her award-winning designs, as well as supplied over 160 stores throughout Australia. “Designing is in my blood,” she said. “Wherever I go, you will find a trail of designs scribbled on bits of paper; the next creation about to come to life.” Gaibriel still stocks her own designs in Sketch, but has expanded to include other labels, too. While the business has endured highs and lows, Gabriel said her love for designing beautiful gowns had kept her going for 30 years. “If I didn’t love what I do, the 80 hour weeks sometimes needed to meet the bridal and wholesale deadlines, would not have been possible,” she said. “I would like to thank the thousands of women and girls that I have made dresses for because you helped keep me in business and my dream alive.”

Our Colour Culture
THE great Meatloaf song Two Out Of Three Ain’t Bad really sits well with a few things that have happened in town over the past six months. Plus it also shows what can happen if people sit down with a mindset to solve the problem. Rugby League first up. The once arch rivals Noosa Pirates and Gympie Devils, both suffering from a shortage of player numbers, reached an amicable decision to join forces and finish the season. It basically came down to, united we stand divided we fall. While not setting the world alight, the united team finished the season in style and played some entertaining football. Most importantly, they kept their many valued fans happy and gave them something to cheer about. I only read the other day, that the Devils have now committed themselves to have a full book of A, Reserve, Colts teams back playing within a couple of years. For those who don’t know, the Noosa club was first set up in the early 70s by a group former Gympie Suburbs players who ventured south not happy with club management. The group included future Noosa life-member Col Christenson, whose son Greg went on to captain the side in their glory years. Plus don’t forget Sydney Roosters Jake Friend and Canterbury grand final hooker Moses Mbye both learnt the trade through the Noosa juniors before shining in the big league. Knowing the spirit that exists at Pirate Park,
their situation is only a hiccup and I am sure we’ll see both Noosa and Gympie back in the Sunshine Coast competition. The decision made to merge the Peregian Surf club under the banner of Noosa is another gold medal result. The Peregian club had limped along for years under poor direction but the council decision to destroy the monthly Originals music gig was the nail in the coffin. How council allowed that to happen was a disgrace, but the lack of urgency to set up a replacement event was worse. I have coffee most Saturday and Sunday mornings and can assure readers the Peregian Square has the place pumping. At least now and with summer upon us, people can go for a swim knowing there is protection with the lifesavers on duty. This is not only good for the Noosa/Sunshine/Peregian clubs but is great for the entire Sunshine Coast lifesaving fraternity. Tourism can now promote that all Coast beaches from Redcliffe to Rainbow Beach are under the watchful eye of Australia’s most trusted organisation – Surf Lifesaving. But remember to swim between the flags, and if you have any problems just ask the lifesaver. The Sunshine Coast Sports Federation is hosting its annual Golf Day on Friday, 14 November at Palmer Coolum resort. Teams are invited to play with 12.30pm hitoff, great prizes and dinner with presentations and comedian to wind up the day. Glasgow athletes Alana and Matt Boyd and Noosa’s Brittany Elmslie will be presented with their welcome home plaques. To put a team in, just call me at the Resort. Until next time.

What has been the funniest or most strange thing you have seen at a wedding? Once, when I announced the couple as husband and wife, there was a fanfare and acrobats, musicians and jugglers came out of the bushes, put on a mesmerising show and then disappeared as quickly as they appeared. It created a great atmosphere and got everyone laughing but I think it was the surprise factor that did it for us all.
that supplied 80 shops with my own designs in natural fibre clothing comes in as being a great achievement too. Describe yourself in five words? A good communicator, creative, loving, honest, happy. Name five people you would invite to a dinner party, and why? Nobody rich and famous. My brother and his partner as it is about time they came to Australia again to visit me. My two sons because I always love it when they are home and my partner, just because. Dan and Mo, Annie and Steve, Gabe and Bruce, Majella and Colin, Michael and Liz... Tony and John... why stop at five?
If you could marry any two people in the world, who would it be? And why? I would like to marry my two sons, if they decide to be married - but not to each other of course. It would be fabulous to see them and their chosen life partners take the step of marriage and it would be my greatest honour to officiate at their weddings.
take
ten with local civil celebrant Linda Scholes of Unforgettable Moments.
New
If you could go back in time and witness any event, what would it be and why? At this point in time it would be going back to the Greek Islands for six months as I did with a friend when I was 18. Travelling from island to island and sleeping on the beaches was amazingly beautiful. I would like to do this again but in a little more luxury this time. What is your favourite food, and why? Two very close answers to that question. Just love cooking a lamb roast for dinner for friends or when the kids come home, love it because it is such a simple option and friends and family all
Do you prefer cats or dogs, and why? Definitely prefer dogs for their loving loyalty. Cats are one of the most destructive species on the planet and destroy the native wildlife in Australia more than any other animal.
enjoy my roast dinners so much. I sound like the ad on TV (Can’t go out for dinner with Tom Cruise… mum’s cooking a lamb roast!). Difficult to say which I like more as I love Thai satay chicken and vegies from the wok of Krung Thep on Gympie Terrace. Love it because the vegies are always fresh and plentiful and the satay sauce is sweet and delicious with a great texture.
Throughout your life, what has been your greatest achievement? Definitely being a mother to two fabulous boys who are now the most, aware, sensitive and loving people that I know. Having the most wonderful job, marrying people and witnessing their love at this special time in their lives. I would have to say that running a successful fashion business
Embarrassing moment? I’m not going to tell you that! What is your favourite movie of all time, and why? Dances with Wolves. Ghost, Gorillas in the Mist. All touched me in some deep way and are the ones that come to mind first. Loved Pretty Woman for the fairytale romance, always love a good romance story.

People firmly behind de-merger By JONATHON HOWARD
Glen Elmes MP reflects on Noosa Council's deamalgamation process 12 months ago.
Election countdown
THIS week Noosa Today put the spotlight on incumbent Member for Noosa Glen Elmes. Mr Elmes was asked to look back at some of his key successes since taking office. “I entered politics to make a difference, to deliver as best I could what my community needed," he said. “If ever there was an issue about which the Noosa community was clear in its desire, it was to preserve its own patch and to ensure it had control of a truly local council.” Mr Elmes said the journey towards de-amalgamation was one that united Noosa residents behind a common cause in 2007. “A few short months after I was first elected to Parliament… the then Premier Peter Beattie, blindsided all by sneaking a change to the State Constitution to snatch away the right of electors to object to amalgamation of their council and then announcing that the big broom was to be put through local government in Queensland,” he said. “The fiction of the Local Government Reform Commission rubber stamped the Beattie Government’s whim to force amalgamation on Queensland councils and to amalgamate Noosa with its southern neighbours.” Mr Elmes said the Noosa community never lost its passion or commitment to the cause during the six years that followed. “When asked to fill in a petition they did, 18,747 of them in a day, when asked to march in protest they did, 7000 of them descending on
Parliament, most of whom had never demonstrated before on anything,” he said. “They were there in the public gallery when I declared war on the Beattie Government on their behalf demanding the restoration of their democratic rights so rudely trampled. “They were there in great numbers every time they were called upon to vote either in Prime Minister John Howard’s plebiscite or the post card required by Minister Crisafulli’s initial stage of the de-amalgamation process.
“The community was one in its opposition - the numbers were always 80 per cent or above and the vote on 9 March 2013 was 81.38 per cent, every booth recording unanimous agreement to get our council back.” Mr Elmes said without the election of the Newman LNP Government in 2012, “Noosa would not have been de-amalgamated” almost 12 months ago. “I am very grateful to my colleagues when as the leader of the Opposition respectively at my urging,
Jeff Seeney, Lawrence Springborg, John-Paul Langbroek and Campbell Newman all maintained the LNP’s commitment to let communities have a democratic say on this issue so vital to so many,” he said. “They deserve our thanks, none more so than the now Premier who delivered what he promised me.” Mr Elmes was asked to address election hurdles the LNP government may face in next year’s election. “The truth is that all candidates whether representing a mainstream

or minor party or standing as an Independent seeking election, have to come up with projects which they would like to accomplish,” he said. “The reality is that the next government of Queensland will be either LNP which has well and truly delivered for Noosa and Queensland or ALP which is recycling members from failed administrations of the past which left the state with $80 billion of debt, a major interest burden. “To me, if you really want effective representation and effective government, the choice is crystal clear.”

ARE hormones ruining your life? Many various and unpleasant symptoms of hormonal imbalances are all too common for women. Symptoms of PMS include irregular periods, mood swings, sugar cravings, skin breakouts or bloating, while menopausal symptoms include night sweats or hot flushes, weight gain, fatigue, feeling emotional or loss of libido. These symptoms are all too often thought of as being a “normal” state of women's hormones. Although these symptoms are common they are not part of the natural process. These symptoms, as with any health condition, indicate that something is out of balance. Hormonal harmony is imperative not only for your total health and well-being, but so you can get on and enjoy your life. There is no need to put up with unwanted, or even in some cases, debilitating symptoms as there are so many effective, professional strength natural herbal and nutritional medicines that can bring your hormones back into balance. Many factors create an imbalance in your hormonal system. Every woman at every stage of her life deserves to live in hormonal harmony and by adopting healthy dietary and lifestyle ideas with the support of natural medicines, this is achievable.

GREG Dolman has been involved with health and fitness in one way, shape, or form since he was very young. This love of exercise, or just moving the body has seen Greg involved with gyms and weight training now for over 34 years. Greg became interested in what his clients’ weakest points are and what caused them to appear and found there is a direct link between a client’s emotional baggage and particular physical aches, pains, and/ or injuries. Greg uses a healing modality (BodyTune) that allows him to enter the client’s unconscious mind, or innate wisdom – which exercises the mind – revealing the true underlying cause of the client’s ailments. Greg says this process allows him to assist his clients with pain management of aches and pains in many parts of their body such as shoulder, sciatica, back, hip and knee. Greg said he had achieved many great results with many clients and had assisted male and female competitors in both body sculpting and fitness models win many titles such as two world professional titles, national titles, and numerous state titles. Greg also lists five years co-presenting workshops for Australian Natural Body Building of Victoria (ANB) for the last five years, as well as being a judge for ANB, as his other achievements. Treasurer Tim Nicholls said the continued increase, which saw approvals rise 0.3 per cent in trend terms in August, is a positive sign for Queensland’s housing industry. “Queensland has had the biggest increase in approvals across the year of any of the mainland states,” Mr Nicholls said. “Encouragingly, the growth has been supported by finance for new dwellings which is good news for the construction industry. “It’s a particularly good result for Queensland because nationally there was a 0.2 per cent decline in approvals in August and a rise of just 1.2 per cent over the year in trend terms.” The figures come on top of building approval figures last week showing a 2.6 per cent rise in August to be up 13.2 per cent over the year in Queensland. Mr Nicholls said since coming to office the government had been supporting the housing industry with initiatives including the removal of transfer duty for Queenslanders buying a family home and the introduction of the Great Start Grant. “Labor slugged Queenslanders buying a family home by removing the transfer duty concession, adding up to $7,125 to the cost,” he said. “This LNP Government understands that it is a huge impost on families trying to get into a new home and we have reinstated the concession to make it more affordable to buy a family home. “We’ve also helped more than 8000 Queensland families into a new home with the $15,000 Great Start Grant for first home buyers.”

Q& A
Property Management by Karen Seskis
Hey Karen, Our Property Manager inspected our rental home and told us the gutters were overflowing and with the storm season coming we should clean them, I don’t have a ladder to reach that high am I expected to do this? Ron J, Tewantin. Hi Ron, It is important that gutters are kept clear to prevent overlowing and leaks inside the property. Ron it is not a tenant’s responsibility to clear gutters especially if you need to climb a ladder to reach the gutters then it becomes a safety issue, I would recommend advising the agent in writing that the gutters are out of reach and that you are unable to clear them safely.
Karen, I find your Q&A very interesting and wanted to know if you can help me with property information. I need to know what I should look for in a property before I purchase it and will it be suitable as a rental? Should I paint & fit new carpets, there is a lot to consider? Tanya, Brisbane Thanks Tanya, there is a lot to consider and every property is so different, usually fresh paint and carpets are recommended, sometimes there are other options worth looking at. Tanya just letting you know that we offer a free service to all investors … I will inspect investment properties with you or if you are unable to make it… go on my own and give you an opinion on suitability as a rental property… so looking at issues like maintenance, appeal, location etc, this will help with deciding what will give you a good rental return. We do not advise on what is going to give you the best capital growth, just an insight into what we encounter as property managers. Please feel free to call me on my mobile if you would like to discuss this further. 0404 088 091. Mastering the track A PARTY of four Master Builders members and staff recently completed the adventure of a lifetime, participating in the inaugural MATES in Construction/CSQ Kokoda Trek to raise money and awareness for suicide prevention in the construction industry.
The team started out as 20 strangers who soon became mates as they tacked almost 100 kilometres of tough terrain.
Master Builders executive director Grant Galvin, tackled the trek and said the trek was a joint venture by Construction Skills Queensland (CSQ), MATES in Construction, Cribhut and Aurora Adventures. The team consisted of Mackay and Whitsunday regional manager Malcolm Hull, and executive wembers, Ralf Dutton from Cairns and Martin Brooke from Townsville. “MATES in Construction is one of the most worthy not-for-profit organisations I have had the pleasure of being involved with and the fact that all proceeds from the trek go directly to supporting suicide prevention in the building industry means that this was a venture Master Builders just had to support,” Mr Galvin said. “We arrived home feeling accomplished and exhausted after trekking the 96-kilometre trail through arguably some of the most rugged jungle in the world. “In fact, if you add up all the uphill climbing along the track, it totals more than 5000 metres of elevation gain - which is an achievement for anyone.” Mr Galvin said it was “humbling” to walk where so many soldiers had served and died. “From now I will endeavour to never sweat the small stuff and always appreciate the wonderful life I have and the country I was lucky enough to be born in,” he said. “I shared this experience with my best friend and wife, and together we will do our small part to spread the incredible history of Kokoda and the amazing people who live there.” Mackay and Whitsunday regional manager Malcolm Hull said the trip was an epic one that followed in the footsteps of Australian soldiers. “All of the trekkers started out as strangers and very quickly became lifelong friends. Every step was worth everything gained personally, and for MATES In Construction,” he said. Master Builders executive member from Cairns, Ralf Dutton, said his fellow trekkers and accompanying porters were definitely the highlight of the trip. “The camaraderie of the trekkers kept everyone entertained through the gruelling days of climbing and the porters were nothing short of heroes,” he said. “I saw one in front of me grab a fellow trekker who had slipped and was in an

It was a moment that truly brought recognition to the MATES In Construction cause.” Master Builders’ executive member from Townsville, Martin Brooke, said the trek, which saw a group of 20 strangers finish as mates, honoured the legacy of the Australian Diggers. “What a fitting way to raise money for such an important building industry cause, by following in the footsteps of Aussie troops
who lived through the brutal trek 72 years ago,” he said. As a team, Master Builders raised more than $22,000 for MATES in Construction, along with much-needed awareness for their cause. This goes towards a total of $140,000 raised ($40,000 above the initial target) allowing for the recruitment of an additional field officer to extend their valuable on-theground suicide prevention programs.

The outdoors beckon bydesign WITH DI HENSHALL
THE days are getting longer and the sun hotter – this can only mean one thing. Summer is just around the corner – time to dust off your outdoor entertaining area that was neglected during our cool winter months. WHETHER you have a rooftop terrace or a waterfront garden, you should make your outdoor area an extension of your living space, an extension of your lounge, where you can sit with friends and family and enjoy this amazing climate.
Your outdoor living space should get as much consideration as your indoor living space. Would you put a plastic table with wooden benches in your living area? Comfortable seating will encourage you to spend more time in the great outdoors. CLEVER LIGHTING Avoid overhead lighting where possible – they are harsh and cast shadows. Indirect lighting, such as gentle lights among trees and plants add to the ambience and looks sensational. Adding a dimmer switch on outdoor lighting is a great idea to control the mood. Sun protection – with so many umbrella configurations and awnings around, you are sure to find the perfect one to protect you

COLOUR AND LIFE
Great for turning an outdoor space into a proper room. Similar to indoor living, having a rug anchors the space and creates a central focus to the room. The added advantage of having an outdoor rug is that is helps to keep the deck/tiles/pavers clean and is easy underfoot.
Although most gardens have them, it’s a nice idea to have some extra potted plants or flowers close by to add colour and life. Cushions are a great way of adding bright and vibrant colours to your outdoor areas.
CANDLES Candles not only add to the ambience but also look brilliant. Flameless candles are the latest and greatest. But if you are a lover of tradition flame candles make sure you put them in a jar or vase (votive) that is high

Cheaper chairman A LETTER from the CEO of Unitywater correcting the impression that its chairman is paid $300,000 a year should be applauded by those concerned about their rising water charges. The chairman is actually paid $105,000 a year to guide the board and set prices. According to its 2012-’13 annual report the board as a whole cost residents in its service area $321,333. Senior managers seem also adequately rewarded. The CEO received $341,664 and shared in executive bonus payments of $220,660 in 2012-’13. The Executive Manager Retail got $261,330. Why a water service monopoly even needs an executive retail manager is unclear but we know this LNP government runs a tight ship and cares about water and electricity monopoly charges. The Chief Information Officer was paid $214,450 which seems proper for a spin doctor. Since its formation in 2009-’10, Coolum and Noosa households have been overcharged about $800 by Goldwater. Since 1999-’00, Coolum residents have been overcharged about $5000 by Maroochy Water Services, Sunshine Coast Water and Goldwater/Unitywater collectively over the years. Turning water into gold is an onerous job deserving to be well-paid. R.J. Koerner, Coolum Beach.
LENSCAPE
To the residents of Coolum for putting up a fight against the proposed Sekisui House development.
To the residents of Pomona for making the town one of Queensland’s friendliest.
Moving for love IF ONE asked the majority of Noosa Shire residents why they live here, the answer is invariably that they packed up and moved here because they love the shire and everything it stood for, and those born and bred here have stayed for the same reason. Presumably those residents who moved to Maroochydore Shire, now Sunshine Coast Council, moved there for the same reasons, bearing in mind that Maroochydore was always more commercially minded. So what is the problem with this very loud self-appointed minority action group - who wish to have their permanent addresses moved to Noosa Shire? If they are not content with their current addresses they can always do what the majority of Noosa Shire residents have done in the past - move. Some of the reasons given for their change of address, via letters in the local print media, beggar belief. For example, the self-appointed (EDV) president stated that she saw no reason for the Sunshine Coast Council to block the move, due to the fact that their EDV rates did not even cover the cost of road upkeep. Therefore an economic burden to Sunshine Coast Council - do Noosa Shire ratepayers need that burden, while we still do not know what the final cost of their own de-amalgamation might be. And another even more puerile printed that SSC are not looking after the roundabouts and road verges leading to Noosa - presumably if EDV moves Noosa can carry the cost - what a joke. Noosa might as well incorporate north Brisbane and all points west. B. Whelan, Kin Kin.
Don’t be chicken THE council should approve the chicken farm but with one condition - the addition of a Chicken Theme Park. Activities could include pyo, pyo (pick your own, pluck your own), a giant bouncy chicken coop for the children, a tourist train similar to the one at the Ginger Factory but instead of chickens chasing the train, the chickens could be on the train and the tourists would chase the train while the chickens throw eggs to them. This could be called the EDV Express and a mock derailment could be staged when it pulls into the Crisafulli Station. Not to mention a climate change rollercoaster ride - it would stop at the top for 30 minutes in a chamber filled entirely with carbon dioxide, then plummet down into a pool of rising sea water (warm, of course ). Catering would be by Colonel Playford NFC (Noosa Fried Chicken, or perhaps Nuske Fried Chicken). On the way out, there would be a pyop station (pack your own poo). Some 70 per cent of the entry fees would go towards road surfacing. This proposal has the lot - a lot more local jobs, self-funding road resurfacing, waste being taken away, and the sound of hundreds of screaming children would soon take the neighbours’ minds off the dust, smell and noise of the chickens. Doug Shun Wah, Peregian Beach.
To the tradespeople who keep speeding through roundabouts. Do you think I’d hire you with driving skills like that?
MARCUS Beach resident Julie Hemsley loves listening to the croaks of the local green tree frogs as the rain fell across the shire this month. Ms Hemsley’s croaking friend has also taken up residence in a pot on her balcony. Her photo is this week’s Lenscape contribution and offers viewers a perfect close-up to admire the beauty of the green tree frog. “I love taking wildlife photos,” she said. “It was enjoying the showers at the weekend with lots of loud croaking.” SEND US YOUR SNAPS: Have you got a cracking local photo that you would like to see in print? 'No’ to chickens I AM writing to say “no” to the proposed chicken factory on Top Forestry Road Cooroy. This is not a farm, it is definitely a factory with lots of huge trucks coming and going along narrow roads. It is not sustainable as chickens are coming from afar and returning to afar so all this would be doing is polluting the area with dust from vehicles and dust from dry faecal matter (that contains bacteria, endotoxins and fungi) which would blow for kilometres contaminating people’s water tanks (their drinking water!) If people surrounding the three or so kilometre area have lung problems, and sinus problems the dust would really affect their health. The dust and pollutants from the dried faecal matter would affect the health of a healthy person. People within three kilometres or so would also have noise day and night from machinery and huge trucks coming and going AND not to mention odour, the smell of this amount of chickens and their faeces would be disgusting and there would be dead birds also. There will be so much polluting of Black Fellow Creek with the run-off from faecal matter, dust. There is the endangered Giant Barred Frog and Tusked Frog in Black Fellow Creek (that runs into the Mary River) and this also runs through other properties that care about the waterways and the environment and their neighbours. This factory certainly does NOT fit into a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Note the key words for the Noosa Biosphere: Harmony (balanced, considerate and tolerant ways of living) - this factory is not balanced and most definitely not considerate. Education (openness, curiosity, willingness to share) - I don’t think there has been any openness in this application. Conservation (caring for our wildlife, bushlands, waterways and cultural heritage) - the factory does not care about the wildlife, bushlands and especially waterways - being Blackfellow Creek; and Sustainable activities (our jobs, business and lifestyle do not cost us the earth) - seems to me that this factory is costing a lot of Cooroy residents the earth;
Jobs - there will not be many local jobs at all at this factory. I will also put that this factory farming is unethical. I do not know why Noosa Council gave Mr Milligan so much extra time to put in a changed application when hardly anything in the ‘changed’ application is changed. This should NOT go through! Heather Warner, Cooroy.
Few jobs here I’VE been a resident of West Cooroy in Jorgensen Rd for 24 years and I’d like to point out in reply to Bill and Corale Edwards (Noosa Today, 25 September) that modern chicken meat farms are designed for minimal staff. Two or three full-time positions at most. Most of the labour in feed delivery, chicken delivery and pick-up, and shed waste removal is from outside the shire, and all the processing would be in Brisbane. As well, you don’t need farming land to produce chicken meat, just isolated flat land near a highway for the sheds. In this case, the disruption to the local economy is far greater than the benefit just one grower will receive. I say NO to the chicken farm at Ridgewood. Michael Tsilfidis, West Cooroy.
Just deny it WHY defer a decision to deny the applicant? The “experts” have been summoned, they have inspected, and they have given their recommendation of “no farm” for a number of environmental, residential, and logistic reasons. What part of “no farm” can be misunderstood to justify a deferral of a council decision? Mark and Jan Rose, Cooroy.
Tarred and feathered IT’S absolutely disgraceful that the council should even think about issuing a permit for that chicken farm when we all know how those animals will suffer. The people applying for the licence should actually be run out of the area. Paddy Moore, Noosa Heads.
To the cyclists who keep riding against the flow of traffic. If you’re going to ride on the road at least play by the road rules.

Black’s back with a bang
live
INTERNATIONALLY renowned baritone, Jeffrey Black, will perform with the Noosa Chorale as part of the Gala Concert on 18 and 19 October at The J. Black has starred on some of the world’s best concert platforms and major opera houses including La Scala Milan, London’s Covent Garden and the New York Met, and has embraced more than 100 different roles, singing with divas like Kiri Te Kanawa, Joan Sutherland, and Renee Fleming. Asked if he had any operatic characters he liked playing, Black said his “calling card roles” were Figaro in The Barber of Seville and Count Almaviva in The Marriage of Figaro. “I’ve probably done about 20 performances of the Barber and about 140 of the count all over the world,” he said. Having performed throughout the world, Black is now back in Brisbane where he has taken on the role of director of music at Brisbane’s Anglican Church Grammar School, the same school he attended as a boy. “I was looking at doing other things in the arts’ field and when this opportunity came up it was too good not to put my hat in the ring,” he said. “I was extremely fortunate with my time there as a schoolboy and a young man as the music experi-

ence I had led me into my career as a professional opera singer. Music can be a stimulating and masculine pursuit, but in an all-boys school it’s not an easy sell. “I just feel I ought to at least give the young men the best opportunity I can.” But Black said this didn’t mean his opera career is over, and is looking forward to performing with the Noosa Chorale at the Gala Concert later this month. “Probably my favourite is the title role in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin. I did it quite a lot in America and also in Sydney. I love the Russian modality, the harmonic language and also the character. He is quite fascinating. I had to learn the role in Russian and it took me a considerable amount of time to learn it,” he said. Among the famous compositions Black will feature in are Verdi’s Requiem, Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana and Beethoven’s Choral Symphony (Ode to Joy). The Brisbane-born opera singer will join three other guests as part of the choir’s 20th anniversary year show, the Noosa Chorale Gala Concert, at The J, Noosa Junction on 18 and 19 October. Tickets are available now with tiered seating $38 or $35 for concession, and mezzanine seating is $30 per person. Phone 5329 6560 or visit www.thej.com.au to book.

Gone Girl is going great guns By JONATHON HOWARD FILM critics are raving about the latest release from Hollywood star Ben Affleck in Gone Girl, which is currently screening at BCC Noosa Cinemas. On the occasion of his fifth wedding anniversary, Nick Dunne (played by Affleck) reports that his wife, Amy (played by Rosamund Pike), has gone missing. Under pressure from the police and growing media frenzy, Nick’s portrait of a blissful union begins to crumble. Soon his lies, deceits and strange behaviour have everyone asking the same dark question: Did Nick Dunne kill his wife?
This film unearths the secrets at the heart of a modern marriage. Gone Girl was a thriller novel first by American writer Gillian Flynn (Crown Publishing Group). The novel was published in June 2012 and the novel’s principal suspense comes from an uncertainty about the main character, Nick Dunne, and whether he is involved in the dis-
appearance of his wife, Amy Dunne. In several interviews, Flynn has said that she was interested in exploring the psychology and dynamics of a long-term relationship. In portraying her principal characters who are outof-work writers, she made use of her own experience being laid off from her job as a writer for Entertainment Weekly. Affleck gives one of the best performances of his career and the film has received rave reviews with a score of 8.6 out of 10 on IMDB. Goodbye Jack and John Life of
brine PHIL JARRATT WHAT an unspeakably sad day it was last Saturday. I was walking down to the beach to join the tribute paddle-out for young Jack Cranstoun, who died so tragically while surfing at Sunshine Beach, when my phone rang. “Stokesy has left his body,” my friend John Charlton said, calling from the bedside. John Stokes, surfing buddy and voice of the ABC in South East Queensland for almost 30 years, had reached the end of his difficult journey. It was hard to think of anything else as I paddled out with hundreds of young people to pay last respects to a young surfer I never knew, but whose passions in life were remarkably similar to my own. Just 26 when he drowned after apparently being knocked unconscious by his board, Jack had a business in Bali and divided his time between there, Noosa and his family home in Brisbane. Although we had never met, I knew the family of his girlfriend, and had been asked by them to attend. Jack’s farewell was both beautiful and heartbreaking, because it is difficult to celebrate a life of so much promise that had only just begun, and yet so many of his friends found the courage to do just that. I sat on my board and watched these vibrant young people and pondered how random life is, that an expert surfer can be taken from his loved ones so suddenly and unexpectedly. The passing of my friend John Stokes, still in the prime of life, was just as tragic for its inevitability. Stokesy had been battling cancer for years, and in June 2013, was forced to draw the curtain on his long and distinguished radio career, the latter part of it spent at ABC Coast FM in Maroochydore. It was an emotion-charged night when friends and colleagues gathered at the Alex Headland Surf Club to wish him well in his early retirement, knowing full well that while he joked about spending more time surfing and travelling, playing ukulele with his mates and watching his lovely daughter Jasmine grow into a young woman, in fact what lay ahead was increasingly difficult and evermore powerful chemotherapy sessions. Stokesy said he’d done 40,000 interviews in
The Jack Cranstoun tribute.128943 his storied career. It might have been more. He was a good interviewer most of the time, and a great interviewer when the subject was dear to his heart, as it was on the many occasions I went on his program to talk about surfing. He also loved to come to the Noosa Festival of Surfing for a live broadcast and interview surf stars past and present. Radio was in his blood. I grew up listening to his dad, Bruce, on 2WL Wollongong, a silken-voiced man who actually listened to what the other person was saying, traits he passed on to Stokes the younger. John had the voice and the professionalism, but he was at his best when his passion for things came into play. And Stokesy was passionate about many things, including the ukulele, Double Island Point and his kneeboard, but also including the rights of women and minorities, and social justice. Stokesy was a great broadcaster who enjoyed a varied and interesting career in which he brought joy to a great many listeners, but nothing in his life showed the measure of the man more than his leaving of it. During his first chemo sessions at Noosaville Hospital he would drop into our shop at the Junction for a chat before heading home. Any questions about the treatment would be met with, “nothing to it, don’t know what all the fuss is about.” John Charlton, who saw him a lot through the
John Stokesy. 128943 tough times, always told me he had never heard Stokesy complain, even at his lowest moments or when the cancer made its unwelcome returns after periods of remission. Through everything he faced in these rotten times, he was as tough as old teak. Last March I invited Stokesy and his ukulele group to perform a short set on the beach stage at the Noosa Festival of Surfing. I knew John would have loved nothing more than this, but the chemo had all but destroyed his lungs, and he told me he simply didn’t have the energy to get through a song, let alone a set. In his own, self-contained way, he had begun to prepare for death. Stokesy was a shocking dresser, with legendary lapses in taste when it came to aloha shirts, so I wasn’t surprised to find most of
the staff at Coast FM similarly dressed in his honour when I arrived to talk about him on air on Monday morning. It was an emotional morning, with announcers and producers struggling to keep it together as hundreds of people phoned in with their memories of a man who touched so many in our community. But above the sadness there was an irreverent sense of fun, which was the spirit of Stokesy. Muso mate Barry Charles came into the studio with his ukulele as I was leaving, and played Open Up Your Heart from the Morning of the Earth soundtrack to close out Annie Gaffney’s tribute program. Nothing could have been more appropriate, because that was what Stokesy did. He opened up hearts wherever he went.

Now in its 14th year, the awards were held in Sydney and highlight standout venues in the industry. Along with 550 bar professionals from around the country, Miss Moneypenny’s owner Ben Walsh and his bar team attended the awards,
and said they were “estatic” to have taken out the top award. “This award is professional recognition of the venue that is beneficial, not only to Miss Moneypenny’s, but to the Noosa hospitality and tourism industry as a whole,” Mr Walsh said. “We are proud, and we hope Noosa is too.” Miss Moneypenny’s is the only venue on the Sunshine
Coast to have been nominated and was up against seven other high-end venues from around Australia. With a selection of events lined-up for the rest of the year, including a sold-out Melbourne

luncheon,
the Miss Moneypenny’s team said they were dedicated to continue their unique offering. 1155758-AM39-14

Flooring choices covered CHOICES Flooring, Noosaville, has just relocated to a larger showroom to offer customers a greater shopping experience and wider selection of products. Brett and Suzy Williams have owned Choices Flooring for more than four years and offer their customers over 20 years of experience in the industry. Brett said he moved into the flooring industry as a “change of direction” from his previous trade as an electrician, and he couldn’t be happier. “We enjoy helping people select their flooring and going on the journey with them through new builds to renovations to get the results,” he said. “It is great to see the finished product and have people happy to be living with their new floors.” Choices Flooring offers a wide range of flooring options including commercial and domestic carpets and vinyls, as well as luxury vinyl tiles, timber, bamboo, laminate and cork flooring. Brett said access to a large range of supplies and national buying powers means competitive prices for their customers, plus a free measure and quote service. “We go out of our way for all customers regardless of whether they are after an off-cut, mat, full house or shop full of flooring,” he said. “We have a lot of experience in the industry and product knowledge to help customers choose the right flooring for their needs.” Choices Flooring is located at 14 Eenie Creek Road, Noosaville, and is open Monday to Friday, from 8.30am to 5pm and Saturday, from 9am to 1pm.

Secrets to women's hearts THE Spring Racing Carnival is in full swing and local jewellery store, Secrets, is bringing some of the trackside glamour to Noosa. Secrets’ new spring/summer collection combines a touch of modern glamour and vintage chic in soft, romantic shades of rose pink, pink tourmaline, alexandrite blue and lavender. Paying homage to the naturalistic jewellery style through floral motifs and hues, this range embraces the latest trends in race wear, including the return to pink in all aspects of styling. Secrets managing director Jane Meredith said the range was designed to inspire women to find their femininity when wearing the newly released Secret Garden collection. “We have also introduced a handmade necklet to anchor the collection,” she said. “This necklet features bold coloured beads, pearls, and a fresh floral centre piece to wear with your favourite frock this season.” Established in beautiful Noosa in 2000 by co-founders Jane Meredith and Dietmar Gorlich, Secrets was the first Australian company to introduce revolutionary Diamond Simulants set in beautiful fine quality, designs. “Beautiful designer jewellery with stones larger than 1ct were simply out of reach for more than 90 per cent of women,” Ms Meredith said. “Being motivated to change this and to be able to offer women an alternative, we researched the new technology in diamond simulants that was emerging in the late 90s. “We were amazed at what we discovered; a stone that looked like a

The stones are produced using intense heat and only the most perfect material is selected and hand cut by master craftsmen to ideal proportions demanded in the fine diamond industry.
Since the opening of the flagship store in Bay Village, Noosa Heads, over 14 years ago, Secrets is now located throughout Australia and online. The Secrets Noosa store has recently moved out onto Hasting Street, offering the full range of Secrets Signature Diamond Simulants and the new spring/ summer collection. Wood's body of steel By JONATHON HOWARD NOOSA resident Kirri Wood is one of Queensland’s most awarded female bodybuilders and the mother-of-two is on a mission to help others realise the wonders of fitness. Lifting heavy weights at the gym and eating six meals of protein and green vegetables every day is standard for the 41-year-old, who has lived in Noosa for the past 12 years. Kirri aimed to be as lean and as strong as possible when she started training in May 2012. “I was always quite fit but had very poor dietary knowledge, so I decided to take the plunge and give body sculpting a go,” she said. “After about 16 weeks of squeaky clean, regular interval eating and lifting lots of heavy weights, I hit the stage in September 2012 in Melbourne in the International Natural Bodybuilding Association (INBA) natural figure competitor and placed second in the novice category.” Two years later and Kirri is one of Queensland’s most successful female bodybuilders and she has competed in 12 INBA competitions and been awarded a total of 15 trophies. This year saw Kirri’s trophy haul increase dramatically after she won her open fitness model division and 30+ fitness model in Townsville. She’s also taken out the 30+ and 40+ age divisions at the Queensland State titles and more recently claimed the Australian champion 40+ fitness model from a pool of 17 other competitors. Although Kirri finds clean eating and exercise a part of life, the past six months have been a struggle after she

Kirri said her resistance to the stomach bug was due to her positive relationship with food and listening to her body. Following her ongoing success and support from her sponsor gym SportsPower Noosaville, Kirri’s main goal now is to inspire and motivate
other women and even teenagers to begin a new, active and healthy lifestyle. “If you’re aiming to either feel better than ever, or to get that dream physique, it’s not too late and knowledge is the key,” she said. “I really recommend anyone to get to the gym, it relieves stress and makes you feel and look better. The fitness industry is really friendly and everyone is there to help.” To find out more, contact Kirri via her facebook page “Fit Feminine 40 & Fabulous” or contact her via Instagram “@fitmumkiz”.
THE Noosa Tigers AFL team has celebrated the end of a stellar season with a presentation night at the Boathouse, Noosa, last Sunday. Noosa Tigers club president Scott McKenzie said the night was the perfect way to congratulate the team on a “very positive year”. “Someone asked me at the start of the season, where did I think the team would end up and I said at least the top five,” he said. “For the team to finish as runner-up, that’s great. A very positive result.” The highlight of the presentation night included Peter Thynne, who won the Club Person of the Year award for organising a number of successful President Lunches that helped raise funds for the club, as well as his continual volunteering efforts throughout the year. Other awards included, Louis Bouchier who took out the U18s Best Teamman award, Corey
Broadman who won the U18s Best and Fairest Award, and Cody Carr who won the U16s Coach Award. For the seniors, Harry Opie was awarded the Seniors Coach Award, Jed Mullen and Shane Davis won the award for Most Consistent, Lou Fary won the Reserves Best and Fairest award, David Welch took out the Seniors Best and Fairest award, and Ian O’Dwyer was awarded the John Bain Memorial Trophy. Scott said the team couldn’t have done it without the support of family and friends who turned out to watch the games, as well as the sponsors who help throughout the season. But, with the season wrapping up only weeks ago, the management and coaching team are already on the lookout for players and sponsors for the 2015 season. “We’re already starting to recruit and get the word out there that we are looking for players,” Scott said.
Fitness of the Spartan warrior By JONATHON HOWARD TWO Noosa teenagers are helping drive a global fitness sensation known as Spartan Race, which pegs competitors against a gruelling obstacle course and promotes teamwork. Spartan Race is set across four separate divisions including a seven kilometre obstacle sprint, 14 kilometre obstacle super course, 21 kilometre obstacle beast and the 42 kilometre obstacle ultra beast. With the philosophy “no Spartan is ever alone”, competitors must find a reliable partner to overcome obstacle heights and to push each other’s limits. Spartan-loving best friends and Noosa lads Tim Hudson and Josh Squire, both 18 years old, decided to take their aptly named “Spartan Gap Year” after graduating from Noosa High School last year. Josh said the plan was simple. “One year of travelling the USA in the cheapest motor home we can find, participating in every Spartan Race possible,” he said. “During our travels we will do what we love to do; film and write about the places we visit.” The pair has a website (www.spartangapyear.com), Youtube channel, Facebook page, Twitter account and Instagram, which is allowing fans constant updates from competitions. “We will explore as many American places as we can, taking part in festivals and events, documenting them via video and writing for everyone to enjoy,” he said. “We will upload our adventures on a daily basis - so follow our story.” The youngsters have also attracted commercial interest with offers for

More than three million people participated in an obstacle course race last year and the Spartan Race community has more than eight million ‘likes’ on Facebook. Spartan Race operates events in nine countries including the United States and Australia. The principle is to promote healthy living, active bodies, determination and above all team work. Josh’s mother Leah Squire said she was extremely proud of the two boys and had provided Noosa Today readers with some of the historical background behind the Spartan Race. “The first Spartan Race event was held in 2010 at the Catamount Outdoor Center in Williston, Vermont, and represented the city of Burlington, Vermont,” she said. “Roughly 500 competitors had to “run, crawl, jump and swim” and over-

come a variety of obstacles at the firstever Spartan Race. “All finishers received a medal and prizes were awarded to the top athletes - a precedent that lives on today.” Ms Squire said Spartan Race was founded by Joe De Sena, Mike Morris, Andy Weinberg, Selicia Sevigny, Richard Lee, Brian Duncanson, Shaun Bain, and Noel Hanna. “Each has an extensive background in athletics, racing, and service. Josh and Tim were at dinner with the founders last week and stayed with them at Boston headquarters,” she said. “Obstacle course racing is currently the fastest growing sport in the world and is now held in USA and franchised to 14 countries including Canada, Europe, South Korea, Africa and Australia.” For more information and to follow Joel and Tim’s journey visit www. spartangapyear.com. Charity stretched beyond the goal MORE than 100 golfers got into the spirit of fund-raising at the Peregian Springs Golf Club recently, where $7800 was raised in a wine auction to buy a lifesaving stretcher. The recent death of a club stalwart was a stark reminder of how difficult it can be for an ambulance to reach an injured or ill golfer on a course, and prompted the golfers into action. Over 300 bottles of wine and spirits were donated for the auction that saw generous bids from a small cask of red wine, which sold for $110, to a bottle of 2001 Vintage Dom Perignon champagne, which sold for $190. The combination of great weather, a round of golf and a
member’s lunch, proved a good mix for raising the much-needed funds for the stretcher. The customised stretcher is designed to fit on a golf buggy and help transport sick or injured players to the clubhouse to receive treatment. Only $3500 was needed to buy the stretcher, the club will now decide on what other medical equipment is needed for the club. The event was organised by Peregian Springs’ Golf Club regulars, The Dirty Dozen, who often play together. Dirty Dozen member Jilly Innes said the club members came to together for the event, fund-raising in memory of one of their own who had died “playing the sport he loved”.

By ADRIAN PRINCE NOW in its 12th year, the charity day run by Goodtime Golfers continues to grow with 100 people involved this year. A total of $3500 was raised for the local branches of Salvation Army, Meals on Wheels and St Vincent de Paul. The format of 9 holes of golf at Noosa Par 3 Golf or two games of croquet at Coolum Croquet Club followed by 12 ends of bowls at Coolum Bowls Club calls for a range of sporting skills. This is a great social event with lunch at the Bowls Club provided by Coolum Meals on Wheels. Overall winners were Coolum Bowls Club members, Freddie Diamond, Jason Thomas and Troy Somerville who played golf and bowls while the runners-up were the Coolum Croquet Club based team of Birte Spencer, Adrian Prince and Geoff Cosgrave (with input by Farida Wills and Fay Beutel of Meals on Wheels) who played croquet and bowls. The major successful bidders at the auction were Leon and Debbie Bishop of Southern Cross Sheds fame, who bought both the major lot of a return flight for two to Fraser Island and the signed poster from the last PGA at Coolum. Many thanks to the large range of businesses, including Air Fraser Island, Environmental Management Contractors and Coolum Beach Realty, who donated prizes and cash. Also, thanks to Margaret Matthews for her work in gathering prizes and organising the cent raffle, Fran Brockhurst for the financial management of the event and to Roscoe Baldwin as the overall organiser.

Fien time for the 3Fs Between the

THE 2014/15 surf lifesaving season is now moving forward at a great rate of knots. Patrol rosters have been settled the nippers are fully operational and the competitors have started their busy schedule. Crowds are still big on our beaches. The volunteer patrols from Noosa have started their work at Peregian and both groups are working well together. Patrol captains from our three clubs reported a quite weekend. For Peregian their cadet group is looking strong. “We started with 29 members and both our nipper and cadets have started their programs.” Youth Development Officer Rod Witham said. “Also some of our cadets have put their hand up to travel to North Burleigh with the Noosa Seahorse organisers when they go to conduct a pilot program for the Burleigh club. “They helped at Noosa, loved working with the kids and now want to be more involved.”
At Sunshine Beach a new incentive program for the juniors has been introduced. “For the first time ever we have appointed Junior Captains in the under-14 age group,” club president Craig Law said. “For the boys their captain is Tom O’Conner and the girls Talisa Brady. “This is all a part of our leadership group training program and we believe that it is a step in the right direction for our club. “Also on the weekend our competitors took part in the Queensland State Endurance Championships at Alexander Headlands and our coaches were more than happy with the results.” The Noosa club also took part in the Endurance Titles and Jordan Mercer and Mackenzie Hynard both made their presence felt with outstanding performances. With the Coolangatta Gold drawing near these two plus others in the Noosa team have thrown down the gauntlet. Mercer, who during our winter underwent advanced training in controlled breathing at a high performance camp in Hawaii, has com-
Jordan Mercer in action. 129035 menced her competition season with a fresh and more confident outlook. Winter for Noosa competitors has indeed been both busy and successful with some travelling to Nicaragua and Hawaii for endurance events and others going to France for the World Surf Life Saving Titles. All three events saw the teams return home with medals of all colour, in particular the masters team from France who had their best results ever. On the home front, the recent Masters Carnival at Hervey Bay saw the Noosa team, despite being small in numbers, finish in third place in a field of 13 clubs. The teams from
Sunshine and Noosa have, over the last six months, been very successful at all levels of competition. This speaks volumes for the work being done by the coaching panels in both clubs. For any parents with young ones thinking of a career in surf lifesaving competition both clubs now have a lot to offer. Speaking of competition it was good to see representatives from the Noosa club attend the Pirates Rugby League fund-raising function held in the Diggers Bar at the Tewantin RSL on Sunday afternoon. Over the years many clubbies from Sunshine and Noosa have played for Pirates
and even now lots of our nippers are members of the Pirates Junior teams. With Pirates on a rebuilding program, we wish them well. On Sunday our nipper clubs had a visit from Ray Fien Junior Activities Advisor for Queensland. Fien a member of the Rainbow Bay surf club is a veteran lifesaver with some 37 years’ experience. “For our nipper organisation to be successful I feel we should work on what I call the ‘3F’ Factor; Fun, Friends and Family,” Fien said. “If we don’t practice the 3Fs they won’t come back next season…” How very true.
Great time off shore

WITH the weather at present, it’s not hard to see why there are so many boats out and about. After a quick drive down Gympie terrace on the weekend, it seemed every side street near the ramps had car and boat trailers parked up. The offshore anglers have had a ball with some sensational fish being caught. North Reef seemed to be the place to be with good sized cobia, dolphin fish and a host of reef fish all on the chew. A little closer in Chardon’s reef also produced some great perlies as well as snapper and sweetlip. The bay has been fishing well with mactuna and bonito smashing the huge schools of frog mouthed pilchards that are around at the moment. On the river the mouth has been producing a great variety of fish, with the larger tides the bait is making its
way into the river and with that, the predators have been feasting. Large flathead, trevally of all kinds, jewies and the odd tailor have all been on the chew. A little further up river there have been some thumper whiting around the dog beach and the frying pan with fish up to 40cm not uncommon. Upriver between the lakes has been the place to be, with jacks and threadfin salmon hitting live baits and trolled lures. If you have a four by four North Shore has been firing, up toward Double Island tailor are still making the migration southwards after spawning off the coast of Fraser Island, the fish are a little skinny but are hungry and are smashing any tasty morsel that has been presented. On the southern beaches we are again seeing whiting taking sand worms or nippers with prawn attracting dart and bream. On behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures!

Outrigger regatta regalia By JONATHON HOWARD THE first annual Noosa Outrigger Canoe River Race has been hailed a success following a bustling weekend event and there’s already a plan in place for next year’s river race. The action started early with a 7.30am women’s, men’s and mixed eight kilometre sunrise warm up session, before launching into the competition with the long course men’s and women’s race followed by the mixed V12 courses in the afternoon. Noosa Master Men’s John Goller, Peter Williams, David Russell, Michael Blumentals, Paul Squire and Martin Courtnay claimed victory in the OC6 Masters 12 kilometre race. Race coordinator Craig Harris said the day was a total success for the club and featured more than 500 paddlers. “The competitors came from as far away as Bundaberg and Burley Heads to take part in the event,” he said. “We were extremely pleased to give the opportunity for the general public to view the races and enjoy the Noosa River.” Mr Harris said the event went so well the Noosa Outrigger Club was already arranging a program for next year. “We’re certainly looking towards another regatta along the Noose River next year and we welcome any inquiries about taking part or local business sponsorship,” he said. He said local cafes, restaurants and accommodation was booked out along the river and local businesses have responded with positive feedback towards the event. Mr Harris said anyone keen to experience the fun and physical benefits of outrigging canoeing is encouraged to contact Noosa Outrigger Club on 5455 5646 . This year’s event was sponsored by the Noosaville Business Association, The Noosa Apartments and Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club.
