Ryans to the rafters as clan traces roots By ALENA HIGGINS THERE were enough Ryan descendants to start a small country at Morgan Park last Saturday as the clan gathered to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the arrival of Thomas Ryan, the first of five siblings to settle in Australia. More than 600 people, including five Irish cousins, made the journey to the region where Thomas chose to lay down roots. Darryl Baker, whose mother was a Ryan before marriage, was among a dozen-strong committee which began organising the mammoth event 18 months ago. “It was absolutely great, we are

all exhausted,” he said on Tuesday. “The Irish visitors were delighted by it all.” Thomas bid farewell to Ireland, which had suffered war, land alienation, persecution and was in the grips of the great potato famine, and arrived solo in Brisbane in 1864. He settled in Clintonvale, raised enough funds to buy a farm after working for the Leslie brothers on their settlement and would later go on to marry an Irish lass. Years later Thomas’ two brothers and sister joined him in Australia. For more photos, head to our online gallery freetimes.com.au

Roses in full bloom for the noses By ALENA HIGGINS THE heavenly aroma of roses filled the air at St Mark’s parish hall on Friday as Warwick’s brightest green thumbs displayed their beautiful blooms. More than 100 entries were received at this year’s Annual Rose Festival, with Barbara Porter crowned Champion Rose and Narelle Goodwin Reserve Champion Rose. St Mark’s Women’s Guild secretary Sue Nalder said she was “thrilled” with the standard of roses despite challenging weather conditions in the lead-up to the event. The number of younger gardens taking part was also encouraging. “Although we always appreciate people who have exhibited for some years now, it was great to see some new names among the winners,” Ms Nalder said. Southern Downs Regionl Council mayor Peter Blundell was on hand to present the trophies. For more photos, head to our online gallery freetimes.com.au

Big brown spotted The warning comes after a 10-year-old New South Wales boy was airlifted from Warwick Hospital to Brisbane’s Mater Children’s Hospital on Thursday night following a snake bite. Details of the type of snake, where and how the bite occurred have not been released. When asked if he had been discharged, a Mater spokeswoman could only say he was no longer at the hospital. Snake breeding season usually extends from late October to February. Anyone who needs assistance removing a snake from their property can call Ms Gynther on 4664 8476 or 0401 487 976.

A LOCAL wildlife warrior is urging Southern Downs residents to immediately hand over injured wildlife they come across and to remember to check for young. Lyn Gynther said it was illegal for unauthorised people to care for native animals, but the message was not getting through. “What is happening is that they are being kept with broken wings, broken legs or they are not being fed the correct diet and they are not getting care until they are at starvation level or dehydration stage - this is an animal welfare issue,” she said. Ms Gynther is available by calling 4664 8476 or 0401 487 976.

LOCAL bargain hunters will be flexing their purse strings after it was revealed a new lease has been inked for the former Warwick Crazy Clark’s store. The lessees, Harsad and Joshna Kumar, have more than 20 years' experience in Brisbane and hope to open their family owned chain “Choice Discount Variety Store” at the Grafton Street premises by the end of next week. At least three former Crazy Clark’s employees, including the store manager and second-in-charge, will be retained at the new store, while positions for seven more are currently being advertised. Mr Kumar, whose family own about eight discount stores spread across Brisbane and the Gold Coast, said his first foray into regional Queensland was made after careful due diligence. “We looked around a few places and realised there is not much competition in Warwick compared to other country towns,” Mr Kumar said. “What we do is a little bit different and we have a point of difference.” Warwick Chamber of Commerce and Industry vice-president Jason Gard welcomed the announcement. “The Warwick Chamber of Commerce and Industry are happy to see another business invest in

SNAKES are slithering into suburbia in search of food and mates as startled passerbys found out last week when they were confronted by a big brown near Warwick’s Harvey Norman centre. Sightings of the legless reptiles spike at this time of year as hordes wake from winter hibernation, eager to fill their bellies and begin breeding. Warwick’s own snake catcher, Lyn Gynther, has already responded to 17 calls for help this season and said the sightings of a big brown in the CBD was not unheard of. “The eastern brown is a notorious suburban dweller and is not

scared of people,” Ms Gynther said. “They’re very adaptable.” If people come face to face with a snake, it is important to back away, she said. “Do not approach them and definitely don’t try killing them as that is when people are most likely to get bitten. “Clean up your yard as best you can, keep your lawns mowed and shut your doors as they will come inside.” Residents should wear appropriate clothing (long sleeves, long pants, gloves, socks and boots) when gardening and if bitten, apply a compression bandage and call triple-zero immediately while keeping their heart rate down.

Cemetery wall plan is moving ahead By ALENA HIGGINS EXPRESSIONS of interest are being sought for a second outdoor burial wall at Stanthorpe Cemetery. Southern Downs Regional councillors voted to take a softlysoftly approach to stage two of the project, which was sparked following the rapid uptake of all 90 vaults built in June 2013. At the September meeting, councillors voted against building block A of stage two, which would consist of 24 vaults, instead resolving to call for expressions of interest on the two proposed designs. Currently there is no allocated capital budget to undertake the works, with block A estimated to

cost about $100,000. Councillor Jo McNally was reluctant to underwrite any portion of the facility before revenue was in place. “If we knew this was in the wind it should have been up for consideration in the budget process,” she said. “If it wasn’t budgeted for this year then I don’t think it should happen.” But Cr Vic Pennisi said he would be prepared to make a start, pointing to the proven popularity of this type of burial and the “poor buggers” who wanted to secure internment before they died but were unable to.

A plan depicting the second burial wall.

Stage one was made available to the public on 1 July 2013. Less than a month later councillors resolved to develop a mirror image of the current design due to the initial flurry of interest but delayed construction until 50 per cent were sold. A comparative quote for a ba-

This year’s fund-raising target of more than $3 million equates to more than 24,000 tuition sessions through the Ronald McDonald Learning Program which matches children with a suitable tutor, helping them to catch up on missed schooling due to treatment. Current and forecast indicators point to a close-to-normal tropical cyclone season, which typically runs from November to April and is just around the corner for the Sunshine State. Mr Webb said Queensland averages around four cyclones each season with one of those crossing the coast. “With El Nino like conditions over the tropical Pacific, the chances of an unusually active season are reduced for 2014-15. “Even near-average conditions are reason enough for communities not to become complacent,” Mr Webb said. “Each summer brings increased risk associated with severe weather. “With warmer temperatures and increased moisture, there is more energy in the atmosphere and this

“The severe thunderstorm season is also upon us and generally activity will increase throughout November into December in south-east Queensland. Queenslanders know that severe thunderstorms can strike quickly and the impact can be devastating. “Keep your eye on the latest forecasts, warnings and observations, particularly when thunderstorms are forecast. “It also pays to keep one eye on the sky to make sure you are prepared for whatever the weather has to offer.” Mr Webb encouraged Queenslanders to use the spring weather to get prepared for the wet season, and make sure they have an emergency kit ready and importantly know where to get information in times of disaster.

SOUTHERN Queensland residents are being urged to prepare for the upcoming storm season and get their insurance in order, despite low chances of an unusually active season. The Bureau of Meteorology released its severe weather outlook for the 2014-15 wet season on Monday, reminding Queenslanders that now is the time to prepare. Bureau of Meteorology Queensland Regional Director Rob Webb said flooding is less likely to be widespread this season than is commonly seen in La Nina events, such as the summer of 2010-2011 but severe weather could still wreak havoc. “It’s important to remember that flooding is to be expected somewhere in Queensland every year and early preparation is the key," he said.

Email your letter to: newsdesk@freetimes.com.au ly into quarantine as a matter of course? It is obvious that not everything is known about the transmission of this deadly disease. The cost would be much less than trying to clean up if Ebola escapes into the population. Being an island country we are in prime position to isolate ourselves from this death sentence, as we have with rabies, foot and mouth disease and a host of other problems. Why not Ebola? I implore the authorities to take charge of the situation before it is too late. We need leaders who will act decisively on this matter. S. Johnson, Stanthorpe.

Not so grand sale RE: The article written by Alena Higgins, (SFT, 2 October) regarding parks. Asset sales are once again in vogue as council arbitrarily decides to unload parkland throughout the SDRC region. The Bligh Government and its arrogant attitude, “nothing is sacred made asset sales the recipe for its demise. The Newman Government is trying a new slant on the same theme, and now we have local authority modifying the model “to provide a better level of service and infrastructure. Cr Pennisi, “the money saved can go into cash reserves, create interest, and can be funnelled into reducing debt, (pigs still fly!) so there will be no improvement to services and infrastructure. What consultation does council intend to engage the community in? No doubt the council can ignore the community and sell anything including donated land. Morally, any donated land such as Barton Street, Stanthorpe, or elsewhere, should be returned to the donor if council has no use for it. The founding fathers (real statesmen) of Toowoomba and subsequent councillors/councils have maintained the vast array of assets (parks) and Toowoomba has an enviable record and image that underwrites its claim as “The Garden City. Would there be any lessons here, particularly the unquestionable economic benefits to the city. Caloundra, particularly the suburb Aroona has successfully integrated many small parks (allotment size particularly) to provide walking links for the community and good town planning requires as much open space as possible, not less. iPads and Apps are no substitute for fresh air and scope for young people to get healthy exercise. I hope the wider community demands more community consultation and information from council sooner rather than later before the sales have gone ahead and future needs and solutions are lost forever. Jim Wilkinson, Stanthorpe.

God’s creatures IN THE SFT 2 October, the preacher of the Anglican Church is asking the animals to come to church to be blessed. Are they that short of attendees? It must be that the animals are as ignorant of the Bible as the preachers. Where does this idea of animals in church come from? There is no record of Christ blessing the animals during His earthly ministry. However it is recorded that he cleansed the temple of priests, moneychangers and animals being sold for sacrifices. Now if we studied the Bible instead of pagan ideas we might learn the truth. In Hinduism they worship all the animals and the greenies adopt the idea of pantheism of worshipping all nature which is carried to the ultimate end where human life is sacrificed. In Genesis 3:4 God cursed the snake because it was used by the devil as an agent of deceit. The pig is called the abomination, Isaiah 66:17, yet how many church members eat it, along with other prohibited creatures, Leviticus 11 and the prohibition is confirmed in the New Testament Acts 10:14. We further read of pagan worship rituals in the temple. Ezekiel 8:9. And he said unto me, Go in, and behold the wicked abominations that they do here. 8:10. so I went in and saw; and behold every form of creeping things, and abominable beasts, and all the idols of the house of Israel, portrayed upon the wall around about. 8:11. And there stood before them 70 men of the ancients of the house of Israel, and in the midst of them stood Jaazaniah the son of Shaphan, with every man in his censer in his hand; and a thick cloud of incense went up. I further read that the name Reverend is the name of God. Psalms 111:9. He sent redemption unto his people: he hath commanded his covenant for ever: holy and reverend (is) his name. Every one of us is a sinner needing salvation, thus we are not holy. Only a God can bless us. Charles Gaitskell, Stanthorpe.

YEARS ago I was placed in quarantine (Wattlebrae Hospital in Brisbane) for a week and my family isolated at home because I had scarlet fever. When animals are brought into Australia they are placed in quarantine for months to ensure they are not carrying any exotic diseases. Why are people travelling from anywhere in West Africa, or who have recently been in any of those countries, not placed immediate-

Not on right path THE Ratepayers Association of Tenterfield Shire expresses its serious concern regarding the recent decision of Tenterfield Shire Council in response to a request from the Mayor of Byron Shire to support a “same sex marriage proclamation. Association members were polled on the issue, and while the result was not unanimous, a majority of members strongly believe that the matter does not fall within council’s mandate, and that council had no right or obligation to consider the issue, and certainly no right to assume that a majority of its constituents would be in favour of such action, by voting in support of it. The association endorses the comments of Mr Geoff Hovey (Letters to the Editor, Tenterfield Star 1 October), and respectfully requests that council initiate steps to have this unacceptable motion rescinded. Jan Evans, Secretary, Ratepayers Association of Tenterfield Shire.

Emu Swamp Dam I WAS talking to an engineer last week and he told me the council should call Emu Swamp Dam “The White Elephant Dam as it will be too costly to pump the water back to Stanthorpe and the ratepayers cannot afford to pay the high increase in rates and there is no way the farmers will pay $1500 a megalitre for water. The water will be heavily polluted as the Severn River does not run all year and the water from the town into the Severn River will be full of pollution. The engineer said the council should raise the wall on Storm King Dam or build a dam below Storm King Dam. I said to the engineer, why don’t you tell the council and his reply was, what is the use - the council has no brains and the best thing to do is vote for a new council at the next election. I will be voting for a council that never went broke on a farm or a business. John Salata, Glen Aplin.

Jabs catching on VACCINATIONS seem to be all the rage these days for all things medical. However, who asked the chickens? Are they prepared to be sprayed at the age of one to two days of age? Then again in the water they drink as they age a bit? All it seems because E Coli has them in confined spaces and causes poultry farmers to suffer profit loss. While this practice is apparently considered best practice in countries overseas, the Australian Government is dragging the

chain it seems before it is inevitably passed into law. Can this writer suggest an alternative like less crowding, more space or better still, green fields! What are people to make of the chicken’s preparation for their healthy, short life? Anyone who has to be boxed in by massive sheds full of twice vaccinated chickens, needs to be aware of everything that is carried from those sheds on the wind towards their precious homes! Surely the Queensland Government has an interested eye on the neighbours of massive chicken production that will safeguard the health of more than the poultry farmers’ profits. Melba Morris, Allora.

Out of order RE: Gay marriages. I take exception to Tenterfield Council and some of its management efforts to recognise gay marriages in Tenterfield Shire. I have no objections to people’s sexual preferences behind closed doors; I do to open practices to such participations. I should also point out recognising such publicly will lead to financially costing ratepayers more. Tenterfield councillors should consult their constituents before making such decisions. Jack Clarke, Rivertree.

Spirit world CHARMAINE Wilson, spirit medium, is coming to Stanthorpe in November. The much tattooed “mystical messenger is planning to hold a public meeting, at a ticket cost of course. No doubt she will be propagating her version of the occult. I imagine there will be quite a few who would seek the “wisdom of this woman to try and discover some hidden mysteries of their future. But should we be taken in by these people who peep and mutter? Why do people want to go to these fortune tellers? Should we be so afraid of the future that we must seek guidance from a ‘spirit medium’? Where do these spirit mediums get their power, and inspiration, from? What does the Good Book say about these people? Is there a guide that we should follow? I think there is, and a quick glance at a few of the many passages in the Bible that condemns spirit mediums, and the occult, can be found in Leviticus 20:6; Galatians 5:20; Isaiah 8:19; to name a few. Anyone planning to spend money to hear Charmaine should think carefully before doing so. Jay Nauss, Glen Aplin.

Water woes fixed THE first concern Councillor Glyn Rees received after he was elected to the former Warwick Shire Council in 2004 focused squarely on the state of Allora’s bore water. “I had a lady come to see me about the water and asked me ‘what the hell we were going to do about it’,” he said. “She said ‘she couldn’t drink it and thought the community was being poisoned’.” Fast forward 10 years and the tiny town is rejoicing after Cr Rees and Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC) mayor Peter Blundell officially connected the village to Warwick’s water supply last week. It took council staff more than 2000 man hours to complete the $3.1 million project, which began in November 2013 and consisted of laying 25 kilometres of pipe from the Freestone Road reservoir. However, Allora’s water ratepayers can expect to fork out extra for the privilege, with water access charges in the town jumping the most in the region - from $274.50 in 2013-14 to $338.70 in 2014-’15 and consumption charges from $1.16

per kilolitre to $1.29. While he had not noticed any difference in water quality yet, owner of Allora Butchery Grant Lollback acknowledged on Monday what had been supplied up until now was “terribly hard” and he was prepared to pay the additional rates “as long as the water is better quality”. Cr Blundell said last week residents could expect to enjoy an improved standard of water quality over the coming weeks. While the boar water was perfectly safe to drink, the connection provides a “softer” and more reliable water supply that reinforces the town’s future, Cr Rees said. “What we have at the moment is doing a lot of damage to people’s hot water systems and various other things,” he said, referring to limescale deposits caused by a build up of calcium and magnesium salts found in bore water. Along with the pipeline works, there were specialist external services for the design of the entire system, construction of a pump station building, pump sets supply and installation, and construction of a balance tank at Willowvale Womina Road and a telemetry system.

New cool export base By ALENA HIGGINS RADICAL changes to the way local farmers export their products could be on the cards if plans to develop an airfreight facility at Toowoomba’s new Wellcamp airport take hold. Wagners chairman John Wagner said the possibilities for farmers and growers in the airport’s catchment area, which extends all the way down to Tamworth in north west NSW, was immense. “It means that you can go eight hours on an aircraft and have 3.9 billion people to serve rather than just Coles and Woolies in Australia,” he said. “It opens people up to other markets and much higher prices - whether dairy, beef products or horticultural industries - it can be as big or small as you want it to be, it just means looking outside the square to find a customer base you don’t currently have.”

However, he stressed it would not happen overnight and would be a “very arduous” task that was dependant on a collaborative approach between producers, the freight board and carriers. Texas-based co-founder of Australian Grassfed Meats Karl Harms currently exports about 168 tonnes of beef products a month, 28 internationally and 140 domestically. He said he would “definitely” look to switch from his current export base at Brisbane to Wellcamp provided it was cost effective and “ticked all the boxes”. “We kill at Casino so basically we would need cold freight at a similar price from Casino to Toowoomba as it is currently costing to send it from Casino to Brisbane,” Mr Harm said. “There would have to be enough cold storage at the airport to hold it for a period of time...and (the airport) would

have to meet quarantine requirements.” Toowoomba and Surat Basin Enterprise (TSBE) general manager of agribusiness and export Jo Collins is tasked with working with the agricultural sector to drive the opportunity. She said there had been an “enormous amount of interest” around what freight export capabilities might mean from Toowoomba and this, coupled with a growing focus on lower food miles and potential congestion at major airports into the future, placed the project in good stead. “We have been talking to businesses currently exporting in the sector to find out what the facility in Toowoomba will need to look like, what services to provide, and what costs in order for them to change their practice and airfreight out of here.” “It is certainly a very exciting prospect for the region... but industry will drive this.”

Motorcycle practice sessions upheld SOUTHERN Downs Regional Council has upheld a decision to permit motorcycle practice sessions at Carnell Raceway as part of its calendar of events. Councillors were asked to review a 1996 court order following a written request by a resident from Rifle Range Road, Stanthorpe, who claimed motorcycle racing contravened the order. The resident argued the

mandate limits the number of cars to be used during practice sessions and draws the conclusion that only cars are allowed to participate in practice sessions. But council’s manager of planning and development advised councillors that motorbike racing has been occurring at Carnell since 1999 and although practice sessions were not noted in their calendar ad-

vices until 2007, it would be presumed as a safety measure. The resident also requested information about the legality of the adjoining property being used for camping by competitors. Council has since advised the adjoining property does not have planning approval for camping and is therefore an unlawful use of land.

Police appealed for urgent public assistance to find Michael Holman and Ashley Groizard, who were found, along with their infant son, in Warwick on Tuesday night.

Drama on highway From Page 1 Police attempted to intercept the vehicle, but the female driver allegedly failed to comply with the officer’s direction to stop. A short time later, officers located the trio at the scene of a collision at the intersection of Bracker Road and Dragon Street. They were more than 650 kilometres from home. A woman was taken to Warwick hospital with minor injuries while the infant was also taken in for observation. Following questioning overnight, a 27-yearold woman has been charged with seven counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and one count each of failing to remain at the scene of a crash, evade police, willful damage, possession of a dangerous drug and driving under the influence of drugs. A 32-year-old man has been charged with two counts each of assault police, willful damage and possess dangerous drugs. Queensland police confirmed the incident related to a missing person investigation. NSW police made an urgent appeal for public help in finding the three-month-old and his parents from Aberdare earlier in the day. “It is believed they may be heading towards Sydney or Queensland, possibly considering leaving the country,” inspector Bruce McGregor said at a press conference. “We have information, we need to check the family’s welfare, because there’s a question of mental stability of one of the parents and we want to just see everything’s OK.” Police have thanked the media and members of the public for their assistance.

Erica is rodeo ambassador By ALENA HIGGINS WARWICK Rodeo’s ambassador for 2014 has been crowned, with Erica Geppert taking out the Rodeo Queen Quest on Saturday night. About 250 people packed Douglas Feez Pavilion to enjoy the festivities and hear the winners announced. Not to be outdone, the 25-year-old also reigned supreme in three other sections - Queen Horsemanship, Queen People’s Choice and Overall Fundraiser. Queen Quest co-ordinator and 2010 Rodeo Queen winner Kate Christensen said Ms Geppert was an impressive competitor. “The girls spoke for three to five minutes on the topic of Warwick (on Friday night at the cocktail event). “Erica had lots of facts and figures that she recited with

no palm cards - she was phenomenal.” Ms Geppert, who manages the local R.M. Williams store, said she was “shocked” and “overwhelmed” when she heard her name called out. “I just felt a sense of peace all of a sudden,” she said. “Having the opportunity to represent the oldest and most famous rodeo in Australia is something very special. “I feel so honoured ... the confidence and experience this has given me is second to none.” The avid polocrosse player will embark on an action-packed week of events and engagements beginning this weekend ahead of the Warwick Rodeo and Rose Festival’s official opening on Monday. THE Australian Breastfeeding Association (ABA) Tenterfield-Granite Belt Group donated an ABA rose “Little Ray of Sunshine” to the Stanthorpe Hospital earlier this month to celebrate the upgrade of its birthing suite. The rose was planted on Thursday 2 October with ABA members and hospital staff in attendance. The “Little Ray of Sunshine” rose was launched to mark ABA’s 50th birthday. Sales of the rose assist ABA to provide vital information and support to the more than 80,000 mothers who seek its help with breastfeeding each year. Research shows more than 90 per cent of Australian mothers want to breastfeed so it is important they receive the right support to breastfeed for as long as they want to, Tenterfield-Granite Belt Group administrator and breastfeeding counsellor Leah Broadwater said. The rose was named by ABA member Miriam Hurworth of Western Australia. “My son is my little ray of sunshine and ABA provides a little ray of sunshine to mothers who might otherwise be struggling in the dark without ABA’s vital guidance and support,” Ms Hurworth said. Formerly known as the Nursing Mothers’ Association, ABA was founded in 1964 by six young mothers and has

Clever kids primed to go THE final countdown has begun, with only days until the Vijayadev Yogendra Auditorium comes alive with The School of Total Education’s Primary School musical production, “Tales of Wisdom and Wonder.” This year, teacher Michael Funder is responsible for the cleverly written script along with the composition of catchy music. The night promises to be full of fun for both young and old, with familiar and new tales such as “The Happy Prince”, “The Old Man and

His Horse”, “Tiki Tiki Tembo”, and “The Elements”, being showcased this Friday and Saturday at 7.30pm. “The students should be very proud of their efforts,” Grade 4 teacher Sam Fisher said. “Learning lines, songs and dances along with the normal day-to-day school schedule has been a challenge, however the students are having fun and are ready and looking forward to the performances.” Tickets are on sale at the school office, or by phoning 4661 2666.

What’s On Big day out at Paradise By TANIA PHILLIPS IF you thought nothing ever happened in Warwick for teenagers - then think again. The Warwick Suicide Prevention Group, in conjunction with Warwick Tourism and events present - Warwick’s Big Day Out this Sunday 19 October at the Youth Space, Lesley Park, from 10am to 4pm. Organisers Johnno and Ann Felton say while it won’t quite be as the Big Days Out in the capital cities, it will have something special that those events don’t have - home-grown local Warwick talent. According to Johnno, the event started as a “Warwick’s Got Talent” of sorts with organisers looking for just the right line-up for such a cool event. And what a line-up they have too - including the amazing Port Paradise. Now based in Toowoomba, the band’s members are all Warwick born and bred. This is a band that is being touted as “the next INXS” and they are Warwick boys. Port Paradise is a four-piece alternative pop/rock band, based in Toowoomba. Featuring, Brad Davieslead singer/ Rhythm, Matthew Vels- Drums, Tim

Dodds- lead/ rhythm guitar, Brodie Marsh- bass. He said it was quite a coup to have Port Paradise returning to the town but they were part of an impressive line-up that also includes Jodie Ellis, the amazing Dominic Strudwick-Anderson (who has to be seen to be believed) and Emma Bell. Johnno said there would be lots to do on the day and he urged families to come along and support the event and prove there were things to do in Warwick for teenagers. “Bring a picnic lunch and come along,” he said. “You’ve got it now come along and support it!”

Making tracks to the rodeo NORMA O’Hara Murphy will release her brand new country album on 22 October at the Warwick Rodeo. Supporting Norma will be the ‘Redland Bay Bluegrass Boyz’ a five-piece band from the Sunshine Coast. The launch will be held in the Members Pavilion at Warwick Rodeo. The event starts at 7pm and Norma’s new album Solid Gold will be available on the night. According to the lady herself, this album is “a smorgasbord of horse and rodeo songs, a must for any horse lover”. The album features 11 Norma O’Hara Murphy originals and one cover song from Lyle Lovett. Also Norma’s own version of her Golden Guitar winning song “Paddy William” which won Norma and Slim Dusty an award in 2001. There are special tribute songs for one of our top sires “Acres Destiny”, “Texas to Tamworth” as well as the title track “Solid Gold” - Norma’s personal tribute to her own stallion Roc Again, now deceased. One of the tracks, Gone Drovin, has been nominated for the Golden Guitar Awards in January - Norma’s first entry since 2010. The album also includes a tribute to a special Warwick event in the form of a new song - Warwick Rodeo.

Norma O’Hara Murphy is set to release her new album in Warwick later this month.

Short films mark movie festival A GROUP of around 45 dedicated short film followers enjoyed the latest offering of short films from around the globe as part of the 17th Annual Manhattan Short Film Festival on Thursday 2 October. The Manhattan Short Film Festival is an international event, organised by Australian Nick Mason, with 10 short films from filmmakers around the world. Viewers around the world cast votes for their favourites. These figures are then collated at the Manhattan Headquarters and results published on the Manhattan website www.manhattanshort.com.

Tenterfield Cinema began screening the Manhattan Short Film Festival in 2007 and was one of the first Australian cinemas to take it up. Apart from 2013, the Manhattan Short Film Festival has been enjoyed by Tenterfield movie goers each year in late September/early October. This year, the Tenterfield audience voted for “Mend and Make Do” (12 votes - England), closely followed by “On The Bridge” (10 votes - England), with “Rhino Full Throttle” coming in third (7 votes - Germany) for the Best Film. Clear winner in the Best Actor category for Tenterfield was

Sameerah Luqumaan-Harris in “The Bravest, The Boldest” (USA) with 21 votes which was confirmed by the overall results showing 38,256 votes. The official results came in with “Rhino Full Throttle” first (16,648 votes), “Mend and Make Do” second (10,797 votes) and “The Bravest, The Boldest” third (9959 votes). Mayor Peter Petty, who attended the event for the first time was very enthusiastic about the short films. “Each film left you with a particular emotion, be it anticipation, suspense, happiness, empathy or sadness”, he said.

gional Arts Development Fund. Eight potters took part in the two-day workshop at the Stanthorpe Pottery Club taught by Lindsay Hamilton. All weekend members sculpted, coiled, slabbed and wheel-worked various clays into pots, platters and creatures. Under Lindsay’s supervision they texturised and pummelled works, added bits on and carved bits out. This was followed by demonstrations of dipping,

Norma said she is very proud of this album and is excited about launching it at Warwick Rodeo, right in the hub of it all. “I’ve spent a lifetime with horses and around rodeos and camp drafts so it is very appropriate to be releasing it in the year of the horse,” she said. “And in the heart of horse country right here in Warwick.”

Cup day is fashion By ALENA HIGGINS FASHIONABLE fillies on the field almost upstaged the ones on the track when Warwick hosted its signature meet on Saturday. Healthy crowds gathered to watch Manfred the Man’s convincing 1500m Warwick Cup win but not everyone had horses on their mind. The fashion fixtures of the day lured dozens of dames trackside, decked out in their finest dress. Standards were high, with colour and elaborate fascinators standout winners on the day. Race results inside sport.

LEO—July 23-August 22 New creative interests are spotlighted now. A public speaking engagement wins you an admirer from an important arena. Expect to spend more time looking after book-keeping and related chores.

Judges and winners of the classic category.

Older relatives seek you out as an adviser. CAPRICORN—December 23-January 20 Friends seek you out for your compassion and guidance. Family members are becoming more exuberant. Watch a tendency to be vague, particularly in career matters. News from overseas may arrive this week.

Lee Collins, Simone and Abby Siebel, Chrissy Crow and Bailey Siebel enjoy the Warwick Cup.

Winners of the contemporary category. The contemporary section.

Class horses, numbers swell The

spin With Casey O’Connor email: wickets-stpe@bigpond.com

FOR racegoers all the action heads to Armstrong Park this weekend for the Caulfield Cup Stanthorpe Cup race meeting. Organisers are expecting another bumper crowd after the successful Warwick Cup last Saturday. When nominations for the meetings closed on Monday, 58 horses had nominated for the five-card event. Jockey Club president Chips Brunckhorst said he was thrilled with the number of nominations as well as the class of horses that had been nominated with trainers from Brisbane the Sunshine coast Gold Coast and Toowoomba supporting the programme. Winner of last Saturday’s Warwick Newmarket Blooded had been nominated for the Stanthorpe Cup along with the Lacey Morrison Trickin. Locally owned galloper Bronco will also take his place in the field alongside the Barry Strong-trained Pipers Point. The Paul Nolan (jnr) galloper Tragedy will have plenty of local support. Brisbane trainer Pat Duff has Arctic Red nominated in the benchmark 55 event. The gelding has had 17 starts for three wins and two minor placings. The K and A Building QTIS race has attracted a big field, and in addition to the prize money on offer there will be a $3500 bonus if the winner is a QTIS qualified runner. A new addition to Armstrong Park for this meeting is the installation of a big screen which will give punters a great view of all the action. For those keen for a bet in the Caulfield Cup, the Japanese galloper Admire Ratki heads the betting market from Dandino last year’s runner-up. I’m leaning towards a local galloper upstaging the raft of visitors - I will be making the job of Glen Boss and Chris Waller a little more difficult by having something on Who Shot Thebarman. It is sure to be another great day at Armstrong Park with gates opening early for punters who have a sure thing in the early southern events. Free buses will run to the course and deliver patrons safely back to town after the last. Fashions on the field again looks set to be a big drawcard but removing some cash from the bookies bag will be my aim. If you are heading out to the track and have never been before, you are in for a real treat. Look out for pictures and report of the Stanthorpe United Presentation evening in next week’s Spin. - Casey ALL ABOUT MANFRED IT is a long trek from Charleville to Warwick, but the return trip for owner trainer Edward Jonson would not have seemed as long and arduous after Manfred the Man claimed the 2014 Warwick Credit Union Cup at Allman Park on Saturday. The five-year-old gelding had outstanding recent form leading into the race and made light work of the good field, streaking away for a four-length win over Extreme Mover. The well supported Ellie La Vie filling the minor placings. It was the gallopers first start on the track and the also the trainer’s first trip to the meeting, but punters were not deterred sending the visiting galloper out as the favourite pick in the race. Clifton trainer John Ferguson opened the meeting in winning style when the Easy Rock mare Spectacular Rock broke her maiden with an easy win in the Condamine Sports Club Maiden. Brooke Stower guided the five-year-old which started at $4.20 to a commanding six length win. Toowoomba jockey Chris Maund gave local trainer Len Bryant a win in the second when White Rain took out the Warwick Hotel Class B at the good odds of $15. The bookies had the better of punters after another at good odds saluted in the third event. Jewel Rustler starting at $17 gave apprentice Manabu

White Rain ridden by Chris Maund gave local trainer Len Bryant a win on Cup Day.

Starting at $17 Jewel Rustler had the Bookies cheering in race three.

Vice or Virtue was in the QTIS Bonus event - race four. Kai and trainer Peter Overell a win in the Gross Whole Sale Meats QTIS Maiden. The winner picked up a $3500 QTIS Bonus in addition to the first place prize money of $5200. Punters were back in the game when the $3.50 favourite Vice or Virtue took out the fourth event the Warwick Vet Clinic 1350 metre Benchmark 68 Handicap. The well- bred gelding by Exceed and Excel is trained in Toowoomba by Donald Baker and had shown a previous liking for the track. The meeting wrapped up with the running of the Frasers Livestock Transport Warwick Newmarket over 1100metres. The winner of the sprint, the Kevin Hickmotttrained Blooded had a big pull in the weights over second placed top weight Mount Kosciuszko with the 2.5kg claim of apprentice jockey Faith Elliott. The top weight lumped 60kgs and was gallant in defeat. The race club committee said after the meeting that they could not have been happier with the outcome of the day as the storm clouds held off and a few light showers throughout the day did little to dampen the enthusiasm of the big crowd. In a pleasing sign for organisers, numbers were up on last year. Special guest of the club was former local Peter Boyce now chairman of the Thoroughbred Board for Racing. Boyce was impressed with the facilities at Allman Park and in particular the track. RAIN, HAIL NO PROBLEM A MID-AFTERNOON downpour and a burst of hail made play interesting for bowlers enjoying a social game at the Summit last Saturday but did it not dampen their enthusiasm. The team of P. Davis, L. Williams and K. Mungall (27) defeated J. Harslett, C. Stratford and N. Gale (19) while A. Zamprogno Elaine and W. Thomas drew 19 all in their game against Kurt Empen and D. Lewis. While this group of local players were battling the elements at home base, the Summit Pennant teams were doping battle on the downs in the opening round of the Pennants competition. Despite a great preparation, the summit team was defeated by a red hot group of players from North Toowoomba. All is ready for the Apple Blossom carnival, and thanks to the work of Dale Barker and his band of volunteers, the top green is looking a picture. A final working bee will be held this Sunday to ensure everything is in tip top shape in

readiness for the big weekend. Of course volunteer help will be very welcome throughout the weekend, and if you are able to assist, contact the club (4683 2366) or you can contact John Shannon/Artie White/Darren Stanley or Alex Mattiazzi who would be delighted to hear from you. BIG WINNERS IN PINK ORGANISERS were thrilled with the big field that played in last Saturday’s charity day at the Stanthorpe Golf Club sponsored by the Heritage Bank. Golfers cut a swathe across the greens and fairways dressed in every imaginable shade of pink raising over $500 for Breast Cancer research and support on the Darling Downs. Winner of the individual competition was Stephen Hooper who turned the tables on the winner of the previous weekend’s competition Max Hunter. With a score of 44 points, Hooper out gunned Hunter who finished runner-up on 43 after a countback. Another rising star in the Junior ranks, Georgia Harris, blitzed the ladies event with a score of 49 points ahead of fellow junior player, Hannah Reeves (41). There was more golf on Sunday with the last honour board event of the year, the mixed foursomes sponsored by Repco. The father and daughter team of Rob and Hannah Reeves added their names to the list of previous winners taking out the event by the narrowest of margins. Best nett winners were Richard Reardon and Lyn Ludlow. Thanks to Repco for sponsoring the event. The Open is a fortnight away and several working bees have been arranged to spruce up the course. Volunteers would be appreciated. Also, members are requested to donate some local produce for the raffle on the weekend. Next Saturday is a single stroke being sponsored by the club. Tee off from 11.30am and special request that players write names on the time sheet so catering can be arranged. DUDGEON ON FIRE IT was all about Rimfire and all about Ray Dudgeon at Inglewood SSAA on Sunday. The placings in the Three positional shoot were mirrored in the Benchrest 50 metres with Ray Dudgeon taking out both events. Runner-up was Tom Donald while Stephanie Dudgeon picked up the minor placing

in both events. This Sunday the always-popular Muzzle Loading and Centrefire rifle are on the menu. ROOSTER MAKES WAY FOR WESPTAC INVITATION RED Rooster Rumble is on hold this week making way for the big Westpac Warwick Invitational golf day.The day’s format is a two ball Ambrose game, a great lunch some nice wine and plenty of very cold beer. What more could you ask for - and all for $100 inclusive. So grab a partner and book in at the pro shop for arguably one of the best day golf days of the year. Last Friday a small but competitive field enjoyed near-perfect conditions in the Red Rooster Rumble. Pete Dipplesman scored 24 points to claim Rumble honours ahead of runner-up Rod Winterton with 22. Nev Heard and Liz Cockram also finished with 22 and received a ball each in the run down. You can bank on Red Rooster being back on the golf menu next week. BIG W BIG FIELD PLAYERS turned out in force for Big W Charity Golf Day on Saturday. A hot field of 111 players contested the four-ball Ambrose event. Trevor King, Herb Ware, Mal Gallaway and Bob Lester showed their vast experience to win the best gross with a good score of 61 off the clubs. The best nett score of 55 was carded by the persistent team of Bruce Greenaway, Derek Kane, Gerald Kane and Gary Sheath. This team plays in almost every Ambrose event and is obviously getting the hang of the game. In the ball rundown, Lenny Williams, Phil McEvoy, Brendan Jones and Rick Mills (55.875), Neil Moore, Wayne Watt, Peter Farrell and E. Thompson 56.25, John Francis Alan Mathews, Greg Wallace and Stefan Kirstenfeldt (56.375), Peter Boney, R. McKenzie, Ashley Aldridge Jnr and J. Windsor (57). The ladies only winners were Yvonne Pinington, Carol Brandon, Marg Adcock and Janet Davis also with 57. The winning Big W team was Molly Seibel, John Goonan, S. Gray and B. Savins. The not so coveted Bradman award went to the team of K. Wassell, B. Thorne, B. Morrish and H. Stanbury. Saturday was also the Mixed Foursomes Championship. Thirty-eight players in the field tested out their relationships. The Gross winners on the day were Geoff and Sam Hinze with a very respectable score of 155 over the 36 holes. The gross runner-up was the mother /son team of Declan and Leah Murphy with a score of 159. In the Nett, Don Warrener teamed up with his much better half Joley Singleton and posted a score of 132, five points ahead of their nearest rivals Gordon and Pam Kerr. The Westpac Invitational this Friday kick starts a big weekend of golf at the Warwick Golf Club. It will be followed by a single stableford on Saturday sponsored by Horse and Jockey Motel. The DDGA Association Championship will be played on Sunday. This is the Darling Downs premier event so for the serious player an event not to be missed. Some great trophies for all grades of players will be on offer. Starting time is 8am running through to 12.30pm and bookings can be made at the Pro Shop.

Local Sport CRICKET OFF TO A FLYER IN STANTHORPE THE Stanthorpe cricket season got off to a flying start last Saturday with games played on the CF White Turf and Sheahan Oval. Both pitches were in excellent condition for the opening fixtures after being prepared for the Bulls Masters the previous week. If the results of these games are any indication, it is going to be a closely fought season with two of the more fancied sides going down. Wanderers recovered from the loss of an early wicket to easily account for Valleys. Adrian Hill backed up an 83-run partnership with Tim Harslett by combining with Chris Williams to post another 75 runs which laid the platform for an impressive 255-run partnership. Hill top scored with 88. Valleys’ Curtis Allen was impressive in his first game of the season with the ball. Allen finished with figures of five for 41 from his eightover stint at the crease. Valleys were under the pump from the outset, chasing a good score and wickets fell steadily as the batsmen felt the pressure. Best of the Valleys’ batsmen were Todd Beckett (24) and Josh Anders (21) as Valleys’ succumbed to be all out for 155 in only the 29th over. There were some tight bowling displays from the Wanderers attack which bodes well for their season. Scott Armbruster took four wickets in his seven- over spell for a miserly nine runs. Lyndon McGrath finished with 2/19 and Andrew Einam chipped in with 2/26. In the end, it was a comfortable win to open the season for Wanderers. Premiers Souths faced in RSL in their opening game of the season but encountered some stiff opposition. Luke Brady and Sam Dowie were back on the paddock for RSL after both underwent knee operations and the benefits were immediately obvious. Brady did not take any time to get back into the groove as he quickly got out on 53 runs. Sam Dowie gave promise of things to come adding a valuable 20. Jason Lawer top-scored with 89 and was well supported by Ross Lupton (24 not out) as the pair posted a good score of 4/239. Youngster Jordan Lanza opened the bowling for Souths and finished with 2/26 from his eight overs. The ever-reliable Scott Williams picked up the only other wickets to fall. Souths never looked comfortable chasing the 239 required. They lost captain Ben Staley with the score on only 42. With wickets failing around him, Jordan Lanza (25) attempted to hold the innings together. With 20 overs gone, Souths were in trouble at 7/83. Their task was made even more difficult when rain interrupted play. In the end, Souths finished their innings with 133 runs in the 31st over after a very shaky start. Jordan Lanza looked good with the bat as well as the ball. He remained not out 25 at the end of the innings. Lanza received late support from Alan Cameron who posted a handy 22 runs. Ross Lupton looked all class with the ball for RSL, finishing with the outstanding figures of 4/6 from four overs. USUAL SUSPECTS ON THE GREEN THE usual suspects were on out at the ‘Garra last Saturday doing battle in a single stableford com-

petition. Gary Sutcliffe played well to edge out Brendan McMillan. Ian Chaplin took the Captain Stakes and Steve Hampstead claimed the only pin shots on 3/15 and nine. The Monthly Medal which was decided the previous weekend was won by Peter Williams who was too solid for the remainder of the field. This weekend there is another double header at the ‘Garra much to the delight of the golfing widows out there. On Saturday, a single stroke event has been scheduled and Sunday the annual 36 hole Foursome competition should be played in what promises to be great golfing conditions, according to the weather forecasters. Sundays tee off is between 9am and 10am. OZTAG JUNIOR STATE CUP NOMINATIONS are invited for one of the biggest sporting events held each year in Queensland - The Oztag Junior State Cup. The 2015 event will be held on the Sunshine Coast from 30 January 2015 and is expected to attract over 2300 players from across Queensland. Players both male and female from Weipa to the Tweed with varying degrees of ability and across a wide range of age groups will compete

in the tournament. The focus will be on player and spectator enjoyment both on and off the field despite this being a representative event. Rides and attractions will be available for kids as well as the Kawana pool and skate park adjacent to the venue. Organisers are making it easy for players to get involved. Teams can be made up of players from an individual club or a combination of clubs. A minimum of 12 players in a team are required. There will also be a Junior Players pool to supplement teams which may be short of players. Individual players who may be interested in playing but are not a in a team, will be placed in the player’s pool and will be eligible for selection teams requiring players. There are Divisions for Under 10 - Under 15 Boys and Girls. In 2014, 159 teams took part in State Cup, and it is anticipated that the 2015 competition will attract 200 teams. Queensland teams will be chosen from under 10 - under 15 in both boys and girls divisions to compete against NSW teams in a State of Origin Series following the State championships Oztag has a growing following across the

Southern Downs, and if you are interested in nominating a team or an individual, nominations close in November. Further details are available from Matthew Stroud 0439 918 638 email: matthews@oztag.com or Scott Park 0417 689 024 email: scottp@oztag.com. SPORTERS OUT ON BATHURST SUNDAY ON Bathurst Sunday, the faithful Sporters tore themselves away from the coverage of the great race to do battle on the greens in Stanthorpe. It was a podium finish for winner Tony Steele who was joined by runner-up Terry Byrnes. Rundowns went to Phil Zikan and Jim McPherson. Ian Anderson had the Best Gross and also took the Pin Shot. Dan Hill-Smith grabbed the Pin Shot at the third. Mark Lynam and Phil Zikan each left with a meat tray looking for a Bathurst barbecue. Sporters kicks off at the normal tee off time of 8am this Sunday, but Sporters are reminded that there will be no Sporters on 26 October making way for play in the Stanthorpe Open competition. HAT-TRICK HELPS ALLORA TO UPSET IT has not taken long for Allora bowler Michael Loughran to hit his straps this season. With the competition barely out of the starting blocks, Loughran has claimed the first hat-trick of the season and finished the game with a “fifa” to help his side to an upset 20-run win over last season premiers Wheatvale. Loughran also starred in the field claiming a great catch. Mitch McLennan top scored for Allora with 60. Inglewood and Maryvale met at Inglewood with Maryvale taking early season honours. Inglewood had first use of the pitch, posting a gettable total of 116. A half century to Maryvale batsman Jordan Siebenhausen set up the run chase for the visitors. But after a solid start, Maryvale slumped to 8/100 and their anticipated win was on shaking ground before Dave Walker and Sam Gordon guided the team to a two-wicket win. In a fine spell of bowling, Ted Callaghan took five wickets for Inglewood. This Saturday, Colts play Rascals at Allora and Maryvale will be looking for another win when they meet Allora at Mayhew Oval. On Sunday, Wheatvale takes on Inglewood with the coin toss set down for 10.15am at Mayhew Oval. Sovereign has this weekend’s bye. REDDIES BEST BRENDAN Iles was named Warwick Redbacks 2014 Best and Fairest player at the Reddies presentation night last Saturday night. In front of a big crowd, Iles claimed the club’s top honour, the Stephen Gray memorial Medal when he finished narrowly ahead of Adam Stevenson. The presentation evening at the Reddies clubhouse was the culmination of a sensational year for the club after claiming their maiden first division premiership only weeks ago. Topping off the season for the club was the announcement by Trevor Green, vice- president of the Darling Downs AFL that Reddies first division coach and club president Jason Wright was the winner of an AFL Qld Award for outstanding service to the game.
