■ Crowning glory of youth initiative and hard work celebrated ...

Skating success By KATH GANNAWAY THE official opening of the Warburton Skate Park on Saturday (18 October) celebrated the town’s youth and their legacy for future generations of skaters. Skaters displayed their skills on the street-style park to music by local youth bands, and students from Redwood College catered with a sausage sizzle and cold drinks. Ramps, rails and quarter pipes were put to the test during competitions later in the day that showed the versatility and challenges of the design. The park was officially opened by Yarra Ranges mayor Fiona McAllister who said the success of a community project could be gauged in two ways. “One is when it doesn’t start with council, but with a group of people. In this case, it was a group of young people who decided they wanted a skate park,” she said. She said they had achieved it through hard work, fund-raising and networking with their community and with the council. The second indicator, she said, was when you got people sneaking in through the construction fence to use it. “This is what is supposed to be here,” she said. The $180,000 project was driven by a group of local young people and community groups who formed the Warburton Skate Park Group more than two years ago. The group took part in planning and design workshops with skate park designers Richard Grocke and Ivanka Buczma from

Enlocus who were at the opening. “There were lots of good ideas and hopefully the space encapsulates that,” Mr Grocke said. “They wanted a skate park that was theirs; they love street and this is a street-style skate park. “It’s not often you get to work with a group of young people who have the support of their community and of the local council.” O’Shannassy Ward representative Cr Jim Child also spoke, saying the skaters had ‘done the hard yards’ lobbying businesses, local police and council. He said community organisations including the Warburton and Yarra Junction Bendigo Community Banks, the Warburton Sports Club Trust and Warburton Advancement League had also got behind the project. Two of the original skaters Brandon Abela and Kailem Bowman spoke on behalf of the group, thanking the community for getting behind the project. “It would not have been possible without all the support we received,” Brandon said adding special thanks to the local businesses “for putting up with us for three years (skating in the street), to Yarra Ranges Council. They had a special ‘thanks’ and flowers for Suyin Chan (Community Development Worker withy Upper Yarra Community Enterprise Ltd (Community Banks) and Karen Swankie, the VCAL co-ordinator at Upper Yarra Community House who had guided, encouraged and supported them. Narconon appeal before VCAT By KATH GANNAWAY NARCONON’S challenge to Yarra Ranges Council’s refusal of a permit for a drug rehabilitation centre in Warburton will go to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) on 10 November. Narconon wants to move the facility they have operated at East Warburton for over 10 years into a residential area of the town, close to the Warburton Primary School.

Residents objecting to the move formed ‘Say No To Narconon’ last year and have campaigned heavily against the proposal. Yarra Ranges Council’s unanimous decision to refuse the planning application in March this year was based on concerns about risk management and amenity. The hearing has been scheduled for six days at VCAT in Melbourne and is expected to include a trip to

Warburton to look over both the existing Narconon facility, and the proposed site. Around 30 witnesses are expected to appear before the tribunal including Warburton police Sergeant Tom Wilkinson, more than 20 objectors, and representatives of Narconon, Yarra Ranges Council and SayNoToNarconon. Say No To Narconon spokesperson Lindy Schneider said the group

was providing buses into VCAT for the first two days of the hearing, the main days for community presentations. “Any members of the community who wish to come along and support the endeavours of the group are invited to travel with us into the city,” she said, adding that people can attend on any day of the hearing. To book a seat on the bus, email help@saynonarcononwarburton.org.

“He did not want to die, for any other reason than he loved life.” Graham died on Monday 6 October 2014. His daughter Jayne gave a powerful tribute at his funeral, and said her favourite thing about her father was the talks they had together. She said that, during his treatments at Epworth Eastern, the two of them would take walks together and chat in the ‘sacred space’ at the hospital. “This, of course, led to many chats about the truth and existence of God and heaven and the afterlife,” Jayne said. “Dad and I always concluded that it didn’t matter if it was true or not, but rather that the peace offered to us by the little room and the sharing of a little verse or prayer was enough for us both.” Jayne said that, if heaven was real, Graham would have received front-row seats, and the job of head of maintenance and repairs of the heavenly pastures with pliers and a roll of wire. “Because the good Lord, like many of us here, knows that our dad could fix anything with a pair of fencing pliers and a roll of wire.” Friends and family spoke in turn about their experiences with Graham and the impact he had on their lives, before a funeral procession - led by Steve and Jacqui Comman’s logging truck - took Graham’s coffin to Healesville Cemetery. To describe Graham Hill, granddaughter Jade Deglatis read the following poem:

PEOPLE are often measured by the impact they have had on others throughout their life - by that measure, Graham Clive Hill has been remembered as a great man. Graham, who through his time was a truck driver, logger, business-owner, farmer, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and husband, was farewelled by around 300 people last week. Family, friends and colleagues gathered at Heritage and Heritage Funerals on Tuesday 14 October to farewell Graham, with many paying tribute to the man they grew up with, worked with and loved. Described as a hard-working and resilient man, Graham Hill was born at the Lilydale Bush Nursing Hospital on 30 January 1937, and the Yarra Valley became his life-long home. Riding a horse to Yering Primary School from his family’s property each day, he was described by his family as a country boy, through-andthrough. That continued to be the case after finishing at Lilydale High School, when Graham made a living driving logging trucks, later going on to own a sawmill in Healesville and Tub Creek. Throughout Graham’s life, he established a concrete-business in Healesville and Woori Yallock, tried his hand at logging, got his pilot’s licence and became a Black Angus cattle farmer. By the time he retired, Graham was known as a significant employer of people in the town, and was passionate about his town and the timber industry. His daughter Lisa said that he had enormous support from his wife of 54 years, Annette, whom he married on 20 December 1958 at Healesville’s Methodist Church. Annette and Graham had four children together: Lisa, Jayne, Joanne and Andrew, and became grandparents to Kelly, Bradley, Michael, Lachie, Jade, Zachary, Jessica and Troy; and great-grandparents to Finn and Jai. His family said that Graham had been living with a number of cancers for around 18 years, and that he fought every step of the way, outliving an original five-year diagnosis from doctors. “He’d been sick for a long time, but he had fought and fought and fought many illnesses, right up until the end,” Lisa said.

Battin reviews his first innings I WOULD like to thank the Gembrook communities for the opportunity to represent you in the Victorian Parliament over the past four years. It is a privilege to work with local community groups and volunteers who dedicate themselves to making our community a better place to live. Governments have to be responsible with spending and ensure we never forget we are handling your money for investment in your community.

The state of

affairs Brad Battin MP

Member for Gembrook

Having experience in running a small business ensured that I understood the operations and accounts for

the Gembrook electorate. As your local Member of Parliament, it is important to deliver on local projects, and I am proud of the projects we have delivered to support residents in the Ranges area including the Gembrook Football Netball Club which now has upgraded lights to allow players train safely for longer. In 2012, it was pleasing to work with Puffing Billy and review their business plan for growth with the increased tourism opportunities from

South East Asia. Funding of $4.38m to maintenance and upgrades and an additional $988,000 to improve level crossings in Emerald, Selby and Clematis will ensure Victoria’s favourite train will continue into the future. Emerald Primary School is under construction with Stage 1 complete. The students and teachers are looking forward to the completion of Stage 2 which includes new art rooms, new classrooms, new sports areas and new administration offices.

‘Hospital’ in delay By JESSE GRAHAM candidates have EILDON’S weighed in on the debate around Healesville Hospital’s future, with all of the major parties pledging support for SHHAG’s case study. Earlier this month, the Save Healesville Hospital Action Group (SHHAG) announced it had yet to receive critical Eastern Health data needed for a business case study on the future of the hospital. SHHAG acting chair Jane Judd said that, due to a delay in releasing the information - which was requested in May, and again in detail in September - the case study would not be completed before the election, as planned. She said the group had hoped for bi-partisan support for the study prior to the election. The study, which was funded by $90,000 in community donations, is being undertaken by consultant Rita

Brewerton to determine whether the hospital is better run by Eastern Health or through other means. The Mail contacted each of the candidates for the Eildon electorate with questions about whether they supported the case study and would support its results and recommendations. Seymour MP and Liberal candidate Cindy McLeish said she had “no issue” with the business case being undertaken, but did not want to make a “premature” decision on supporting the outcome. “It would be premature to make a decision regarding support for the outcome of the business case without an understanding of the content of the report and its recommendations,” she said. “I am also aware that the consultant said publicly that she intended to look at the options for the future of the hospital, so it may be that the

outcome is not clear-cut one way or the other.” Ms McLeish’s comments were echoed by Nationals candidate Jim Child who said he supported the study, but was awaiting the results before commenting. Greens candidate Marie Sellstrom said that she needed more details on the matter before pledging her support. Labor candidate Sally Brennan said that she supported the business case and that she would support the outcome of the study, regardless of its recommendations. “The business case is about the service profile, and will question whether the community has been offered the best service profile to meet its needs,” she said. “Labor will support outcomes of any studies that contain the required academic rigour, extensive community consultation and demonstrated need - on the face of it, the indepen-

dent business case contains these essential elements.” Independent candidate Bruce Argyle - who is a member of SHHAG - said that he “absolutely” supported the case study, and said the responsibility of local hospital governance should lie with locals. “The outcome of the case study will not be a yes/no answer - it will evaluate the options and help us make informed decisions,” he said. “Ultimately, the community should decide whether the Healesville Hospital ought to be independent.” Both Eastern Health and the Department of Health representatives said they were working with Ms Brewerton to make the requested data available. Independent candidate Wirrun Sky and Australian Country Alliance candidate Jeffrey Leake were both contacted, but did not respond by deadline.

Facing up to storms of the Winters By JESSE GRAHAM THE SUN has yet to come out for Lyndy Winter, whose home was extensively damaged by a falling tree during an intense storm last month. Ms Winter awoke at midnight on Tuesday 9 September, to a tree coming through her roof and beams coming down only centimetres from where her son, Tom, was sleeping. The tree, which also destroyed her front verandah, was made safe by CFA and SES crews in the middle of the night, but Ms Winter’s efforts to have the damage fixed screeched to a halt when she tried to

get an insurance assessor out. Six weeks on, and her verandah is still destroyed, her roof is still tarped and more parts of the house are becoming damaged, with works still to take place. Ms Winter said the estimated cost for the rebuild on the roof, the damaged wall and the associated water damage was around $72,000. The water damage came when a large storm hit the Yarra Valley the night after the storm which sent the tree through Ms Winter’s roof - as no assessor had attended the site and no tarp was laid, water swept into the home.

Road plan input sought By KATH GANNAWAY YARRA Ranges ratepayers will have an opportunity to make submissions on a revised Road Management Plan presented to council on 14 October. Yarra Ranges Council endorsed the Draft Road Management Plan 2014 and directed that a copy of the plan be made available to the public at Community Links and on the council website. Some of the key issues identified as part of the review were updating information based on current policies, revision of the current inspection system and addition of appropriate information on defects, intervention levels, and associated response times with a view to enabling greater transparency in reporting to the community. In moving the motion, Cr Jason Callanan said the review highlighted areas for refinement to bring the plan up to date with current policies and procedures. “It’s tweaking to ensure we are current,” he said. Mayor Fiona McAllister however said much of the feedback in submissions that informed the plan were about transparency. She said the message from the community was around the performance standards required of contractors and how they measured up. “This is something as a council we should be more focused on and talking about commercial in confidence, so we don’t go down that path, I don’t think is an excuse in itself,” she said. “I think we do need to be more transparent and that we should find ways to report more on these critical areas,” she said. The submission period is 28 days from the date the notice is published in the Government Gazette. A further report is set to go to council for consideration.

PODIATRY SERVICES WARBURTON

THE Yarra Ranges Council Draft Environmental Strategy is out for comment and below are some of my observations. Our community needs to be educated as to what ‘council’ is. Council is not ‘local government’ despite the persistence of this fallacy. There is no authorisation for ‘local government’ in our Constitution, and two referendums made it clear that Australians do not want councils recognised as a tier of government. Since there is a CEO and other unelected officers managing the shire, the word ‘corporation’ is better suited. Values are intended to be ideals such as honesty, integrity, and trustworthiness, but, according this draft, the values council wants fostered are trees, wildlife and scenery. To whoever wrote that drivel, please note: trees and wildlife ‘have’ value; they cannot ‘be’ values. Council’s egregious goal six states: All who live and work in the Yarra Ranges see themselves as stewards of our environment. Council’s intention with this goal is to destroy property rights by denying our authority as private property owners, demote us to the lesser status of property manager and coerce us to engage in environmental work without pay, using us as slaves of the corporation. Council also claims that we are lacking in our ability to respond to the natural world and that we don’t have a full sense of belonging. This watered-down version of the Environmental Strategy further obfuscates the true, nefarious intent of the council and needs to be abolished. Cait Hoogenbosch, Chum Creek.

THE issue of Swinburne Campus Lilydale now enters an extremely tenuous phase as reported in Mount Evelyn Mail ’New TAFE Twist’ Tuesday 14 October . Why turn this into a game of smoke and mirrors, Christine Fyffe, when it’s so serious? You told me personally just a week ago that the used car lot shopfront was a ’load of rubbish’? Well, it appears to be true after all, and now we really look like getting a new car yard ‘Ford Claytons Model’ -‘Flexible Learning Centre’ fix instead of using the purpose-built but sadly vacant campus on the hill, complete with some vague robot-run video conferencing and transportable training equipment ? Does that mean this ‘model’ actually comes with wheels - perhaps even cartwheels if we are to retain such a flippant approach to higher education? But what does it actually mean? The mind boggles as to how extensive any staffing might be under such a shiny new bonnet? Will this ‘model’ be available in perpetuity or does that offer expire straight after election midnight? Further is Mr Gray merely talking up his windfall $2.25 million, or that shady grey area which is palatable only to those who wish to be fooled until after your re-election when the issue dies another communal death and this time hopefully goes away forever? You voted for a State Budget which ripped the guts out of TAFE and now you wish to make ’Mickey Mouse’ amends because the proletariat appear to be revolting. And ‘revolting’ is the word when we’re supposed to swallow the notion put forward by Minister Wakeling that ..." Government should not be in the business of... what buildings and what

staff they employ..” etc. Wake up and smell the exhaust, sir - that is exactly what we employed you to do, or have you completely forgotten the Public Commission under which your services are rendered? And as for Councillor McCarthy’s “We couldn’t have asked for a better outcome”. How could you possibly misconstrue this new ‘Car Dealership’ as being a ‘great outcome’ for any student? Given the Yarra Ranges Council’s disastrous push earlier to acquire the vacant campus should we now view you and some of your fellow councillors as mere wisps of smoke in Mrs Fyffe’s mirrors? Franc Smith, Mount Evelyn.

Spark for budding writers EARLIER this month, I had the pleasure of revisiting my childhood primary school - Healesville Primary School - to speak to the Grade 1 and 2 students about writing news stories. I visited on Thursday 9 October, and talked to the children about stories written in the Mail, about everything from fires to threatened closures and more. The students on the day were courteous and well-behaved, inquisitive and undoubtedly interested in hearing about stories in the town and learning about what makes a good report. Afterwards, I answered questions from students about my time at the primary school, what got me started in writing (reading Harry Potter as a child helped), and whether or not I like zombie stories (I do). I’d like to thank Ms House, Ms Sheaffe and all of the Healesville Primary School Grade 1 and 2 students for having me along for a great chat. I look forward to seeing some of your names in print one day. Jesse Graham, Healesville.

Posers for candidates THERE will be a State Election candidates and community discussion on Wednesday 22 October 7.30 pm at the Darron Honey Centre, organised by the Uniting Church. This is a great chance for community members to ask questions of the candidates and to hear more about the candidates’ policies and views. If you have time I urge you to attend. Bruce Argyle, Healesville.

Live local plea to Cindy THANK you for printing the responses to your Candidate Questionnaire from those intending to stand for Eildon in the forthcoming election. I believe that it is important that local candidates be selected from the constituency and communities they are seeking to represent, it is my understanding that all but one of the candidates live in the electorate. As the current sitting Member for the now re-distributed and re-named seat of Seymour, Cindy McLeish made reference to having long standing connections with Yea, but appeared to stop short of confirming that she actually resides there. Has Ms McLeish ever lived in an electorate she has or has sought to represent or does she reside in suburban Melbourne? If re-elected, would Ms McLeish and her family take up permanent residence within the electorate and where would she establish her Electoral Office? Ian McNees, Healesville.

Librar y’s wheel review By KATH GANNAWAY A REVIEW of the mobile library service across Yarra Ranges Shire proposes the end of the B-double library truck in favour of an expanded flexi-service. Yarra Ranges Councillors heard on Tuesday night that the ageing library truck that had served the shire for almost 30 years was past its useby date, was not disability friendly and was unable to travel to some of the more remote places in the shire. In its place the council will trial an expanded mobile library service that includes a new timetable using the smaller flexi-service van. The proposal will provide an annual recurrent saving of over $2.25 million. The review follows a review in August 2011 that saw the Valley Mobile (B-double) replaced with the current flexi-service and the Ranges mobile (B-double) continued as the Ranges Outreach. Yarra Ranges Director Social and Economic Development, Ali Wastie, in response to a question on the meaning of ‘sustainability’ in relation to delivery of the service, said it related to both environmental and social sustainability. She said the flexi-service used less fuel and that in terms of social sustainability visits to the mobile library truck were so low as to indicate it was not meeting guidelines set by the State Government, or community needs. “There are a lot more sustainable ways to deliver library services to the community, she said. Councillors Len Cox and Noel

Cliff supported the six-month trial, but with reservations. “The problem is this (flexi) service doesn’t carry anything like the book stock that the old one did, but I think it’s worth giving it a try, Cr Cox said. Cr Cliff said his concern was that “lots of places had been dropped off the service, and said he would like to see more places added. Cr Fiona McAllister voted against the motion, saying she had significant issues with taking a quarter of a million dollars out of the library service. “My preference would be that it goes back into the service and I will be looking for that to be reflected when this matter comes back to council, she said. The pilot program will see Mt Dandenong, Millgrove, Seville, Warburton and Woori Yallock and Kirkbrae Village and Walmsley Village in Kilsyth added to the flexi service. Based on feedback from the community, additional locations could include Belgrave Heights, Ferny Creek and Chirnside Park added. The trial will start in January 2015 and the proposed timetable is on Council’s website - www.yarraranges.vic.gov.au/flexi . Ms Wastie said the community could provide feedback to help shape the trial, including days and locations of stops, before the trial began. Feedback can also be made in writing to j.elward@yarraranges. vic.gov.au or to PO Box 105, Lilydale, 3140, up until 5pm on Friday, 28 November, 2014.

All out for history By KATH GANNAWAY WITH less than a month to go until the Back to Yarra Junction Celebration, the Upper Yarra Historical Society is making the most of History Week to promote the event, and the Yarra Junction History Book Project. The society will man a display of their Anzac material ahead of the centenary celebrations next year, and have a table promoting the Back To, and the book at the Yarra Junction Library from 19 to 26 October. A team of local people, including UYHS president Tom O’Meara, is working on the book which will be a history of Yarra Junction in words and pictures

from Aboriginal times to the present day. History Week at the library, and the Back To Yarra Junction at the Upper Yarra Historical Museum on 16 November will provide opportunities to add to the already substantial collection of photographs, recollections, personal anecdotes, documents and other memorabilia. Photos or documents taken into the library can be scanned on the spot and returned. For further information about the book or the Back To Yarra Junction visit the facebook page www.facebook. com/YarraJunctionHistory, or phone Tom O’Meara on 0427 707 730 or Frank Colverson on 0409 671 221.

Tribute to ace axeman

HEALESVILLE Heritage Festival on 8 and 9 November promises many great attractions for the whole family, not the least of which is a Champion Axemen’s Woodchop, over the weekend. The highlight of the weekend’s events will be a tribute to former Victorian and Australasian Champion, Healesville’s very own, Ron Young. The Ron Young Memorial 300mm Open Underhand Event, will take place on the Sunday, in honour of Ron, who started at the tender age of 16. He passed away in 2007. Little did he know then, that one day he would beat the legendary Jack O’Toole in the Victorian Underhand Championship Final in 1964, after having already beaten him in the heats leading up. “Jack O’Toole was undoubtedly the best ever axemen I chopped against,” Ron had said. “Tom Kirk from NSW was the next best.” Ron was born in Geelong, and his family moved to Healesville in 1936, where he attended St Brigid’s Catholic School. After 12 years of playing with Healesville Football Club in the old Yarra Valley League, Ron returned to his first love, wood chopping, and was coached by local axeman and close friend, Jack Ayres. In 1976 he captained a team of eight, including Jack’s brother, Tom Ayres, which toured New Zealand with considerable success, and in 1978 he won the tree climbing championship at Lily-

NO friends, Healesville isn’t bankrupt - not by a long shot. A further round of festivities is planned, just to keep things movin’. Speaking of the centenary reminds us that Healesville got a mighty fine helpin’ of free publicity in the big Centenary edition of ‘The Herald’ published this week, by means of ‘Guardian’ photographs taken in the district. In Monday’s Herald, there appeared two photographs copies by us from originals owned by Miss Sheehan, depicting the visit of the Duchess of York to Fernshaw.

Warburton Mail 23 October 1964 Eight attend swimming pool annual meeting YARRA Junction has a fine swimming pool, but it has not sufficient public-minded citizens inter-

ested enough to help conduct the pool. At the annual meeting of the Swimming Pool Committee last Tuesday night, only eight people were present making it impossible to elect a full panel of office-bearers. Nobody was prepared to accept the office of secretary. Five of the eight in attendance have not missed a meeting for years but apparently the rest of the town was adopted a ‘couldn’t care less’ attitude.

Interest lacking in football at Yarra Junction LACK of interest, emphasised by the poor attendance at the Yarra Junction Football Club’s annual meeting last Sunday morning, offers a serious threat to the future of the club. The meeting on Sunday had to be abandoned as there weren’t sufficient numbers present to elect office-bearers for the next season. What a sorry state of affairs. The Junction Club has withstood many a crisis over the years, but has always managed to field a team. It would indeed be a pity to see the club fold up. Contributed by Ellena Biggs

Festive Friday for primar y By JESSE GRAHAM STUDENTS young and old will be gathering at Badger Creek Primary School this Friday for its biannual celebration, filling the grounds with music, markets and rides to enjoy. The Badger Creek Primary School Community Festival will be held from 4-8pm on Friday 24 October on the primary school grounds, and the community is being invited to come along. Students, parents and teachers will be hosting market stalls with local handicrafts, rides will be run for visitors, and music will be performed by a number of groups during the four-hour festival. Event organiser Sarah Stewart said that all grades at the school had taken part in organising the festival, and that

people of all ages would be entertained on the day. “There’s going to be lots of rides, a jumping castle, face painting and community groups - the CFA is coming, and so is AUSKick,” she said. “I’m feeling excited and proud of the children at the school and for the chance for the community to all get together.” Ms Stewart said the children were excited about the upcoming event, and that the younger students at the school had taken the brave task of being testers for the face-painters. She said visitors young and old would enjoy the ‘Festival Cafe,’ where musicians from the Badger Creek Primary School Band, Healesville High School Band, Badger Creek Primary

School Choir and Badger Creek Women’s Choir will perform through the afternoon. KinderLink, Birdlife Australia Yarra Valley, the Healesville and District Historical Society and other community groups will be also represented at the festival. “We welcome all parts of the community - and kids from all of the schools - to come,” Ms Stewart said. “It’s a fun family event - come and see what Badger Creek has to offer.” The Badger Creek Primary School Community Festival will be held at Badger Creek Primary School on Badger Creek Road in Healesville. For more information, call 5962 4019.

Hands up for the festival. Harry Stewart, Stephanie Wake, Luke Wal, Ashlee Scheltinga, Kira Hetherton and Connor Morfonios are excited for the Badger Creek event. 129202 Picture: LIZ CLARKSON

Garlick smarting over ‘desecrating’ church By JESSE GRAHAM A SALVATION Army volunteer has hit out at the organisation for its recent refurbishment of the Healesville Salvation Army Hall, and branded the works as a “desecration”. But a Salvos youth pastor has responded to the criticism, and said the works were part of a move to becoming a youth-oriented organisation. Maureen Garlick contacted the Mail last week, incensed by the recent announcement that the Salvos had re-painted and re-carpeted the hall to create a youth drop in centreThe Lounge. When completed, young people will be able to visit The Lounge out of hours, with youth workers on-hand during opening hours. Ms Garlick said the works, which

include painting the walls black, were “desecrating” the church where she was married 40 years ago. “I find it absolutely disgusting,” she said. “My mother-in-law was in the Salvation Army and my husband was when he was a boy - his mother’s funeral was there. “To see what they’re doing to it, I think there would be a few ladies turning in their graves.” Ms Garlick said the changes would prevent someone from having an event, such as a wedding or a funeral, in the hall. “They do need a place in Healesville for some young ones, but don’t degrade the church like that.” But youth pastor Troy Jansen said the works were not permanent, and had been the subject of discussion

since the beginning of the year. “With a group of key people who are actually actively involved, the conversation about a youth drop-in centre and where we’re moving has been out there,” he said. “It was very known what was going on.” Mr Jansen said that, to one-day return the hall to its former state, the paint and the carpet would simply need to be replaced. He said he believed the benefits of having a youth centre in town outweighed the criticism of the changes. “We’ll be able to give our young people a space to hang out and connect with people, which is a win considering there is no space like that in Healesville,” he said. “I would be saying to people change is a consistent thing, so let’s

get on board and stop obsessing over the little things.” Ms Garlick raised concerns that the works were being completed without a council permit, and that the matter had been raised with the Yarra Ranges Council. Yarra Ranges Council’s manager of Community Compliance, David Clarkson, said no permit had been issued for the hall, but that one may not have been required. “A building permit isn’t required for a re-painting,” he said. “However, a building permit would usually be required for alterations to a public hall, depending on the nature and extent of the works. “We will investigate further to determine if there are any building or planning compliance issues.”

Fair reports By KATH GANNAWAY ACCOUNTABILITY for inaccurate reports to council was raised as an issue when Yarra Ranges Council addressed meeting procedures last week. Council was considering releasing for community consultation a Local Law Review on Meeting Procedures and the Use of the Common Seal. Yarra Glen resident Christine Dove addressed the councillors on the issue of fair and open decision making. “What obligation of accountability is there once a report (to a council meeting) is proven to be incorrect,” she said. Asked by mayor Fiona McAllister what she thought might be included to reflect the need for accountability and transparency, Ms Dove said the public should have more time to consider reports in agendas before the matter goes before council. “One week is not enough for people to review the information and then if something is wrong, to address that,” she said. “I have noted the concern of councillors and also heard from submitters of mis-informatin and inaccuracies in officer reports,” she said. Cr Witlox moved that the draft document go out for community consultation. He said he understood the need to get reports done to keep matters moving, but added “they should be accurate”. “We can announce community consultation and I think feedback from Ms Dove can be included, and it should be,” he said. Community consultation will take place from 22 October to 19 November with the findings and submissions considered at the 9 December council meeting.

Sally steps aside By KATH GANNAWAY IT’S hard to imagine Upper Yarra Community House without Sally Brennan. But, as the UYCH committee of management announced their CEO’s resignation last week, the woman who has led the organisation for 22 years said it was time. There is also her candidacy for Labor in the November State Election. “You don’t go into these things with a ‘Plan B’, she told the Mail. “When I do something it’s about giving it 100 per cent.” UYCH, under Sally Brennan’s leadership has brought what were two decades ago, unthinkable education opportunities to the Upper Yarra and beyond. Born and raised in Yarra Junction, Sally returned to the valley to raise her own family after university, travel and work in the wider world. “For me it was, and is, more about recognising the value of education in the lives of people and what education provides for people as a spring-

Retiring CEO Sally Brennan, centre, with acting CEO Jenny Holinger and committee of management president Ric Butler, says she's happy UYCH is in good hands. board to live; it enables them to reach their potential,” she said. Asked what she is most proud of in terms of achievements at UYSC, it gets back to breaking down barriers and making education accessible. “What our organisation has been able to achieve is removing the barriers like the programs for young mums, for young people who have

fallen out of school, for offenders, people with low literacy skills, culturally specific programs for Aboriginal people.” The children’s centre is an achievement she describes as “extraordinary”. “That just didn’t exist in the Upper Yarra or in this area, and that is significant,” she said. The centre in-

cludes a childcare centre and an education base for childcare courses. The UYCH committee acknowledged Sally’s contribution, last week describing the contribution she made to the growth of UYCH as remarkable. “Sally has led UYCH and strengthened its position as one of the community’s leading employers offering quality services to the people of Upper Yarra,” president Ric Butler said. “Sally deservedly will be long remembered for leading one of the most successful community organisations in the area. “Under her leadership, UYCH has not only survived through economic hardship, it has emerged as one of the most respected organisations offering high quality services. “We will always be grateful to Sally for her leadership, compelling vision and for fostering a culture of working together that will serve our organisation for decades to come.” Jenny Holinger will take up the position of acting CEO.

$1m road funds to curb crashes By JESSE GRAHAM OVER $1 million will be spent on Yarra Valley roads in an effort to curb crash statistics, following government funding announcements last week. Seymour MP and Eildon candidate, Cindy McLeish joined Nationals candidate, Jim Child, to announce

a total $1,032,000 in road safety funding for Chum Creek and Warburton. The pair announced that, under the government’s Safer Road Infrastructure Program, Healesville-Kinglake Road in Chum Creek and the Warburton Highway in Warburton will have works completed to improve safety. The Chum Creek project will cost

$580,000, while the Warburton project will cost $552,000. Ms McLeish and Mr Child said that the works at both sites would address the high number on crashes on both roads, which both have winding roads, tight bends and unprotected areas where cars can leave the road. The works complement others that cover Kangaroo Ground, Panton

Hill, Smiths Gully and St Andrews. Ms McLeish said that, in the five years before December 2013, 41 casualty crashes, with 21 serious injuries and two fatalities, were recorded at the sites of the works. Transport Minister, Terry Mulder, said the Yarra Valley projects are part of a wider strategy to improve road safety.

Real cash is set for Ben’s Shed By KATH GANNAWAY A NEW kitchen area is in sight for Ben’s Shed at Yarra Junction, following the announcement last week of a $16,890 State Government grant. Seymour MP and Liberal Candidate for Eildon, Cindy McLeish and Nationals Candidate and O’Shannassy Ward Councillor Jim Child, called into the Men’s Shed on Friday, 17 October, with the good news. Ms McLeish said she was pleased to be providing the funds in response to some of the needs identified during previous visits. The grant is to close off the dining and meeting area from the work area. Ms McLeish said closing off that area would help the Men’s Shed meet OH&S requirements and make it a more user-friendly space. She said she expected the funds would be made available within a couple of weeks. “This is not an election commitment, this is real money and you will be able to get on with the job,” she told the men, and women, who had been eagerly awaiting the announcement. Treasurer Leigh Hardy said the group already had plans drawn up to refurbish the shed, including addressing problems with the open dining and meeting area, and was in discussion with Yarra Ranges Council in relation to funding. Cr Child said the council acknowledged they had a responsibility to do work on the building. He told the group they were in a good position to leverage the State Government funds against council funds.

Building a safer Victoria in bushfire areas The Victorian Government is actively implementing a range of powerline safety measures as part of its commitment to fully implement all 67 recommendations made by the Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission. The Powerline Bushfire Safety Program is a $750 million 10-year program responsible for reducing the risk of Victorian powerlines causing bushfires. Major works being delivered to safeguard the Yarra Ranges community before the upcoming fire season include: > 33 privately owned bare-wire powerlines replaced with safer underground cabling,

equating to 9.3km of safer powerlines in your community. > 12km of high-voltage bare-wire powerlines replaced with safer powerlines, with 6 additional

major projects approved to replace a further 13km of bare-wire powerlines in 2015. > 11 residential care facilities provided with back-up generators, supporting the critical

power needs of 676 vulnerable local residents during times of extreme weather events. These works are giving Victoria the most bushfire safe power network in the country.

Dying trade is kept alive By KATH GANNAWAY BLACKSMITHS from all over Australia were at Wandin on Sunday 12 October, as the annual Australian Blacksmith Convention fired up at Mont De Lancey Historic Homestead. The Blacksmith Shop is an integral part of the homestead with enthusiasts meeting each weekend to hone the craft. “Our aim is to keep the blacksmithing craft alive by demonstrating and sharing the knowledge and skills of forging with hammer and anvil,” Mont De Lancey’s Jill Sebire said. The Blacksmith Shop is the focus of the convention, but with market stalls, medieval reenactments and craft tables, the event is also an increasingly popular day for families. Mont De Lancey is now forging ahead with plans for their next big event, the Draught Horse Festival on 22 and 23 November.

Physios do the job for patients YARRA Ranges Physiotherapy has local faces, local knowledge and an array of services to help its patients to fight fit again. The clinic, which counts seven years in the Yarra Valley, is based out of its new and refurbished home at 2419 Warburton Highway in Yarra Junction, and has a team of skilled physiotherapists. Physiotherapist and clinic owner Tim Bickerton said his team specialised in quality, confidential care for sports injuries, post-surgical rehabilitation, paediatrics, and more.

Our focus is providing quality, confidential treatment to get you back to activity better and sooner… Tim Bickerton

“Physiotherapists treat a wide range of injuries, conditions and impairments,” Mr Bickerton said. “We are primary practitioners, so you may not need a GP or surgeon referral.” He said the focus of the business was simply to get patients up-and-

moving again, and that the clinic offered after-hours consultations and even home visits. “Our focus is providing quality, confidential treatment to get you back to activity better and sooner,” Mr Bickerton said. “Physios get results.”

Working alongside pysiotherapists Ryan Carruthers, Samantha Moore and newcomer, Maddison Findlay, as well as welcoming receptionists, Gayle Cole and Karyn Findlay, Mr Bickerton said the business had grown to offer more to patients. The clinic will offer allied health

services in the future, with psychology currently on offer and services including podiatry, speech and diet services to come. Yarra Ranges Physiotherapy is open from 9am-5pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays, 10am-6pm on Wednesdays, 10am-8pm on Thursdays and 9am-1pm on Saturdays. For more information, or to book a consultation, visit www.yarrarangesphysio.com.au, call 5967 2557, email info@yarrarangesphysio.com.au or drop into the clinic at 2419 Warburton Highway, Yarra Junction.

A silent disco twist to races

It’s six of the best By KATH GANNAWAY

By JESSE GRAHAM

Seymour MP Cindy McLeish, Glen Piper, Brett Shambrook and Richard Coulson are excited over the Yarra Glen race Picture: JESSE GRAHAM day events. 128773 fun and have a good day out,” he said. “It’s something different there’s nothing out this side of Melbourne that’s like that.” Mr Shambrook said the $55 disco ticket – which includes admission on race-day – also provides dancers with courtesy bus travel to and from Lilydale. “Transport is a big issue in this neck of the woods, so they don’t have to worry about getting a taxi,” he said. Seymour MP and Eildon candidate Cindy McLeish an-

nounced the silent disco with Mr Shambrook and said the Melbourne Cup event would have something for everyone. “Punters will be able to enjoy a great race card, a big screen TV televising the Cup Day action from Flemington, Fashions on the Field, children’s activities, prizes and superb regional food and wine that showcase the Valley’s top producers,” she said. For more information, visit www.countryracing.com.au.

PICNIC racing at Healesville gets underway on 1 November with the Derby Day race meeting. The 2014/’15 season will see six race meetings from November through to March, offering plenty of opportunity to enjoy that special breed of racing that comes under the heading of ‘the picnics’. It’s about the friendly atmosphere, it’s about the rural setting, it’s about the getting up close with the horses, the jockeys and the bookies and it’s about meeting up with friends and family to enjoy a family outing. Healesville racecourse with its avenue of shady pin oaks and plenty of lawn space, is the perfect setting for a picnic. The racing is keen with good fields, and the feeling of being close to the action wherever you are around the course adds excitement to the pleasure of relaxing in a particularly picturesque setting. Marquee packages and catering can be organised with catering provided, or bring your own food and drink. For large groups, an area can be roped off for a fee, so your space is secured. There is a canteen and bar on course, along with full TAB and bookmakers facilities. A $20 punters’ club op-

RACE-GOERS will have an extra reason to visit Yarra Glen on Melbourne Cup Day, with the venue hosting a silent disco for those looking to take a break from the races. The Valley Vibe Silent Disco will be run on Melbourne Cup Day 4 November at the Yarra Valley Racing Centre in Yarra Glen. Set up in a marquee on racing day, 10 DJs will go head-tohead in pairs in an arena, with dancers all wearing headphones tuned to one of the two music tracks. The result is that the disco is silent to everyone except for those wearing the headphones, and half of the dancers will be moving to the beat of a different song to the others. In a unique move, the disco dancers will be able to keep track of the racing action on the day, with messages and races broadcast intermittently over the headphones. Yarra Valley Racing CEO Brett Shambrook said he hoped the event would make race-day more appealing to younger valley residents. “We’re hoping the younger people get on board, have some

Spring in your racing step By KATH GANNAWAY YARRA Valley Racing has a winning trifector in store for anyone wanting to immerse themselves in the fun and excitement of the world-famous Spring Racing Carnival. The celebrations start with Cox Plate Day this Saturday, with the Melbourne Cup and Oaks Day meetings providing plenty of on and off track opportunities for family fun, fabulous fashion and up-close racing action. Cup Day, on the first Tuesday in November, is traditionally the highlight of the season at Yarra Glen, attracting thousands of people each year. Yarra Valley Racing, with massive investment in venue facilities, a spectacular new track and expansive lawns, has become a ‘must do’ for everyone from families and young party-goers to serious punters. The biggest harness meeting in the southern hemisphere, it has it all ... the horses, the fashions, the roses, live music, the tote, bookies, big screen live racing from Flemington and quirky punters. It has the added attraction of a designated family zone making with lots of free children’s entertainment making it a fun day for family and friends to enjoy one of the nation’s great traditions. Cox Plate is a great warm-up for the main event and Oaks Day – Ladies’ Day – is fast becoming a sporting and fashion spectacular where fashions are again a highlight of the day. Both days have Fashions On The Field – for ladies and men, live bands

Return to Camelot By KATH GANNAWAY

Many voices make the 150th moment HEALESVILLE’S 150th is something worth singing about according to Leah Marlowe who is co-ordinating a massed choir as part of the 8 November celebrations. Community members of any age can celebrate the event alongside members of three local choirs, the Rocky Road Choir, Monday Night Choir and the Yarra Glen Choir. Choir members are taking part in rehearsals on Mondays and Wednesdays in October, and there will be a formal massed choir rehearsal on Thursday 6 November in preparation for the ‘big sing’ which will

take place in Queen’s Park following the 150th street parade on Saturday 8 November. Leah, who has been part of many community singing events in the Yarra Valley said celebrating the 150th with uplifting harmonies and great company was a memorable way to take part. No singing experience is necessary and anyone is welcome to join the choir rehearsals, or just attend the one-off massed rehearsal. For more information contact Leah on 0458 160 380.

Steiner tribute to Nirvana LITTLE Yarra Steiner School will continue their series of anniversary tribute gigs with a tribute to 90s band Nirvana at Warburton on Saturday 25 October. The tradition of tribute concerts on the anniversary of classic albums/bands and artists, started in 2009 with the Abbey Road gig, and has featured Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, The Doors, Dark Side of the Moon and now Nirvana. Students, staff and friends of LYSS will be in concert at Wild Thyme Cafe at 1pm. Entry is by minimum donation of $10 adults and $5 children with all proceeds of the event going to the school.

Milly Graham (centre) with Ben Colt, Matt Buck, Jarrah Fitcher, Freya Woodland and Izzy Skinner will play Nirvana. 129204 Picture: ROB CAREW

WIZARDS will mezmerise, gallant knights will clash swords and merry minstrels will sing in the bustling marketplace as part of the Medieval Village Fair at Camelot Castle in Yellingbo on Sunday 26 October. Held in the castle gardens, the fair plays host to a full day of medievalthemed festivities including Sir Ryan and a host of knights who will entertain with displays of swordsmanship skills and battle re-enactments. The traditional Punch and Judy puppet show and the popular storyteller will return, while there are lots of free kids games, cottage industry stalls and lowcost hearty food such as roast spit rolls, hot potatoes and Devonshire tea. Meet the King and Queen of Camelot who will draw the winners of the colouring competition and present great prizes. Backed by WHYLD and run by Yellingbo CFA, Camelot Castle and Woori Community House, the plan last year at the inaugural event was to give local families an affordable day out in spring

King of Camelot Lindsay McKenzie and Yellingbo CFA members Tayla Salsbury and Stephanie George are cooking up fun for the return to Picture: KATH GANNAWAY Camelot. 129171 and it did that and more making it a a huge success. This year is expected to be every bit as wonderful ... perhaps, even better.

The fair runs from 10am to 4pm at Camelot Castle in Yellingbo. Visit www. medievalvillagefair.org for more information.

As nature intended it to be FOR lovers of local history, and lovers of the bush, Wanderslore Sanctuary at Launching Place has plenty to offer in equal share. On Sunday, 26 October, the sanctuary will be open to the public - it’s annual ‘show off’ day. The historic 1920s subdivision was saved from development, and from a planned highway, by teacher and wouldbe artist Constance Coleman. Miss Coleman inherited a block in the bushland subdivision behind the Home Hotel and over time bought up adjoining blocks, 22 in all, to create a haven for native birds, animals and plants. As senior mistress at Lilydale High for 25 years, she lived in the cottage that her father William Rowland Coleman built as a holiday house from which to enjoy his fishing expeditions, and painted in her studio, a former railway building. Miss Coleman gifted the property to Trust for Nature and it is curated by Friends of Wanderslore who have over

Friends of Wanderslore convenor Linda Clark looks over one of many moss-covered logs in one of the gullies. 129148 Picture: KATH GANNAWAY the past two decades worked on clearing the bush of weeds and returning it to natural bushland. The rare patch of bush is very much a hidden treasure with the landscape varying from the drier ridge to the damp, lush fern gullies and, particularly at this time of year, vibrant green mosses. Ground orchids and other wildflow-

ers come out in spring, including the Victorian floral emblem, Pink Heath, and there are almost 100 bird species including boobook owls and reported sightings of the Powerful Owl. Two resident wallabies, wombats, possums and native rats are among the residents who enjoy the benefit of Miss Coleman’s vision. Wanderslore has an open day once a year, providing an opportunity for locals and visitors to discover, or rediscover, the remarkable remnant of bushland that gives an insight into what much of Launching Place might have been like for the early settlers. The Friends put on a sausage sizzle and refreshments, there will be guided and self-guided walks, a talk by a wildlife biologist and an exhibition by Upper Yarra artist Marion Dennis in Miss Coleman’s historic studio. Wanderslore, at 2180 Warburton Highway, Launching Place (between the general store and the hotel) will be open from 10am to 4pm.

BASED very loosely on the ’80s TV show, The Equalizer is a lean, mean and efficient thriller. When Robert McCall (Denzel Washington), a retired elite agent, witnesses his friend, a young prostitute (Chloe Grace Moretz), being abused by her pimp, Robert resolves to strike back against the corruption in his neighbourhood. The Equalizer hits that sweet spot of being simple

without being superficial, and brutal without being gratuitous. The plot quickly and succinctly establishes Robert’s character and past, his principles and the threat he is up against, and then sets him loose. At home both in drama and action films, Washington elevates the violent proceedings with a nuanced, wise performance. In contrast to his ordinarily calm, generous demeanour, Robert is lethally skilled, but there is a palpable impression that Robert dislikes killing, and only does so because he cannot stand by and let injustice continue.

Therefore, he’s introspective without being gloomy and brooding. The Equalizer excels in gruesome, inventive action, but also features very tense interactions with the villains - led by the sadistic Teddy (Marton Csokas) - and some surprisingly tender moments between Robert and his friends. Fans of the show may be disappointed, but The Equalizer is a solid thriller and another great role for Denzel Washington. It also fills a gap nicely now that the Taken franchise has worn out its welcome. – SETH HYNES

Tight tussle across games YVCA TWO-DAY cricket returned for DJ Strachan Shield action with all three games locked in a tight tussle between bat and ball. All three games followed a similar script as the teams batting first looked as if they were set for big days, but were unable to capitalise as the bowlers fought back to restrict the eventual totals. Warburton-Millgrove are hosting Hoddles Creek, and the home side didn’t hesitate in batting in good batting conditions. Much hype surrounded the recruiting of the Lever boys from Yarra Junction, with much of the talk around brother Daniel and David. However, after a long hiatus from the game, it is Ben who is making the biggest impression as his knock of 44 anchored the early stages of the Burras’ innings. Ably supported by the explosive Luke Darwall (44) the pair looked to have the home side on trek to a sizeable total for the Wombats to chase. Unfortunately for the Burras, as seems to be the trend so far this season, the pair could capitalise on sizeable starts, and the innings struggles to kick on in the manner it should against some patient bowling from Hoddles Creek.

Led by David Chesney (4/61), the Wombats were able to apply the brakes on the innings, eventually dismissing Warburton-Millgrove for 216 in the shadows of stumps despite a steadying 21 from Ivan Andreuza. Although disappointed in not adding some polish to the innings, the Burras do possess an attack which will challenge the Wombats in their pursuit of the target. Hoddles Creek do possess the batting power to get there, but will need to put their best foot forward to get there. Yarra Junction also batted first on home soil against Healesville, and in slow batting conditions battled tough to put together a defendable total. With the departure of the afore-mentioned Lever boys, Yarra Junction were in desparate need for accomplished experience at the top of the order, and they have quickly found the answer with the return of Stephen Flutter. For the second game in a row, Flutter showed his high end quality as an opening bat as his innings of 64 held the things together for the Eagles. Healesville possess an attack that rarely relents and with Dylan Moore (4/69) the cornerstone, opposition batting sides need to be on the ball for the entire innings. This was the case as the Bloods turned the screws on the Eagles, and despite some valuable runs from Michael Haggar (25) and Hayden Wilson (23), the innings fell short, eventually closing at 173. Healesville will be keen to improve on their batting performances over the first two rounds, and will view the chase as a perfect opportunity to set the season back on course. On the other hand, the Eagles also possess an equally relentless bowling attack that will push the Bloods to go the distance if they are to chase the target. In the final game of the round, Mount Evelyn hosted Woori Yallock, and in a carbon copy of the other two games, the home side threatened to blow the game wide open, before relinquishing the advantage to the visitors’ bowlers. After the loss of Dan Fraser with the second ball of the day, top order batsmen Chris Anderson (34), Gareth Fraser (41) and Kane Jones (43) looked to have steered the Rovers in course to a score in excess of 250. The Rovers looked well in control at 3/134 against a frustrated Tigers attack looking for the vital break through. As has happened to Mount Evelyn so far this season, with the top order failing to capitalise on substantial starts, the rest of the order struggled to keep the scoreboard ticking over and were eventually dismissed for a

disappointing 204. After coping an early pasting, speedster Jackson Wright produced the goods in his second spell to mastermind the comeback with great figures of 6/68. Woori Yallock successfully navigated through a tricky session before stumps, with openers Dan Mock and Ryan Smith taking the score to 0/18 and giving the Tigers the upperhand in this contest. With the Mount Evelyn Reserve being fairly quick, the home side will have to bowl exceptionally well to keep their side in this contest. DJ Strachan Shield Warburton-Millgrove 216 (L. Darwall 44, B. Athletes head to head on the track WEEK three of Yarra Ranges Athletics summer season provided the opportunities for each of the four clubs to go head to head. With club colours (yellow, blue, red and green) visible around the ground, the day was destined for excitement, intrigue and competitiveness. Perfect weather enabled athletes to really enjoy the atmosphere and the athletic events which included much-loved relay events. After presentation of the club captains and the colourful march (run) past, events got underway. First up was an excited group of Under 6-8 year olds in the shuttle relay. The fun and laughter from that event spilled over to the remainder of the morning. The friendly competition continued throughout the day, culminating in the exciting relays. Final results will not be known until next weekend when one of the four clubs will have bragging rights for the next 12 months. During the week several club athletes represented their respective primary schools at the Eastern Re-

Harley competes in the Under 6-8 shuttle relay. gion Championships with many athletes qualifying for the State Championships in a week’s time. We also had many athletes at the State Secondary Schools championships. Congratulations to all theathletes for some superb efforts and excellent results. Round two of the AV shield was held on Sunday. It was great to see another excellent turnout from our senior athletes and some great per-

formances, with many athletes competing in multiple events and even trying some new events. I lost count of the number of PBs achieved throughout the day. One of the best efforts of the day was from Malcolm Duncan who competed in six events, not a bad effort for a 50-plus athlete. Next week we have normal competition on Saturday, followed by the Box Hill relays on Sunday. Always a fun day, we look for-

ward to seeing as many athletes as possible having a run. All our athletes have access to top coaching from our caring, committed and highly qualified coaches, who are making a big impact on the athletes already working with them. RAMPS, rails and quarter pipes were put to the test on Saturday as local skaters celebrated the official opening of the Warburton Skate Park. Members of the Warburton Skate Park Group were among skaters of all ages, on boards and scooters, who displayed their skills on the street-style park they had been instrumental in designing. Members of the group ramped up their moves to take part in the official skate competition later in the day.
