EIGHTEEN teachers and countless students squashed into one portable was always going to be a tight squeeze. Included in the classroom are numerous desks, lockers and a makeshift staffroom that doesn’t even have a sink to wash dirty dishes. And without funding, new integration students outside Emerald, Gembrook, Cockatoo, Selby, Menzies Creek and Macclesfield will no longer be able to attend Emerald Secondary College. The School Council last week passed a motion that the college could only accept enrolments from integration students from primary schools within its local zone. Integration students’ disabilities range from physical impairments to learning difficulties to behavioural problems linked to conditions like autism and the like. School council president Paul Woods said the decision was not taken lightly. “The decision is a result of the college’s desire to maintain a high quality integration program that is sustainable,” Mr Woods said. “It’s a major issue for our school, as a result of two factors – our facilities for the program are grossly inadequate and we have a number of unfunded integration students in the program.” The school’s integration is currently run from an old portable that the school council says is unsuitable for students and staff. He said many integration students had needs different to other students at the school, and many on the autism spectrum preferred a quiet space to spend their breaks rather than the rat race of the playground. “There simply isn’t enough room to accommodate the students during their breaks so we have had to introduce a roster system for when they can spend time in the portable,” he said. Mr Woods said the school had a

offer,” Mr Woods said. “The Special Schools at Officer and Ferntree Gully are too far for many of these kids to travel and we think that we should be able to offer our program to other students in the greater area. “All we need is a purpose-built facility, which we estimate will cost $1.5 million and we will be able to make it happen.”

Briefly Awoke to intruder
By JODIE SYMONDS
POLICE are investigating an aggravated burglary in Chirnside Park this month. A woman woke to find someone with a torch in her Anthony Drive home. The offender left with coins, and the victim was unharmed.

Great deal on education centre of town, within walking distance of public transport and close to local high schools,” he said. “We also needed more than 1000 square metres of internal space for our teaching delivery and other facilities, as well as ample parking - this site ticked all these boxes.” Two full-time staff will be employed by the provider, which is also recruiting internally for a campus co-ordinator, who Mr Gray said will communicate with the wider community to ensure the campus is “meeting the needs of the outer east.” He said that teaching staff at the new campus would be deter-
mined by class sizes. Around 20 classes will be offered initially in 2015 - with enrolments currently being accepted - though Mr Gray says the campus may offer more classes, depending on the demand. The provider’s move to the town was announced earlier this month, and bolstered by $2.25 million from the State Government. Labor’s Deputy Leader, James Merlino and Evelyn candidate, Peter Harris, however, dismissed the announcement as an “insult” to the community, with the Swinburne site still empty.

String of burglaries A 35-YEAR-OLD Carrum Downs man has been arrested in relation to a number of burglaries in Tecoma and Upwey in June and July this year. He has been charged with a number of burglary and theft of motor vehicle offences. Police allege that the man would steal a car in the Carrum Downs area and drive to the Dandenongs. He has been charged and bailed to appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court at a later date.

IT HAS been six months since McDonald’s began slinging burgers in Tecoma, but No Maccas advocates are still not lovin’ it. Every morning from 9am-10am, a group of anti-McDonald’s supporters are committed to chant and wave their banners to display their disapproval of the restaurant. It has been a continual fight but the protestors are not giving up. To coincide with the six-month anniversary of the restaurant opening to the public, 16 October marked International No McDonald’s Day. The No Maccas protestors are now aiming
BOX Hill Institute’s new Lilydale Community Campus, which will open for classes in early 2015, will be located at a former car dealership in the centre of Lilydale. The new campus will be located on the corner of John and Hutchison Streets in Lilydale, only hundreds of metres away from the former Swinburne Lilydale campus. The education provider confirmed the details on Friday, 17 October, and CEO, Norman Gray, said the location was chosen based on a number of criteria. “It needed to be close to the

Kevin Teasdale says this laneway is a gateway to the history of Emerald.

WHAT’S in a name? It could forge the way of the future and remember the past. The newly covered laneway in Emerald, next to the bakery and clothing store, is complete and all that’s left is to name the laneway. Earlier this year, the Mail spoke to Peter Segman, who was the spokesperson for those who funded the roof over the laneway. At the time, Mr Segman told the Mail there had been a few names put forward, but he favoured the name of Stapleton Lane, after early Emerald blacksmith Charles Stapleton. But Kevin Teasdale, who was born in Emerald, and has spent many of his adult years in town, says that there is a risk of forgetting other important members of the past by naming the laneway after just one man. “My parents Joseph and Nell Teasdale, together with my uncle Edward Teasdale owned and operated multiple businesses on the prop-
erty on the south side of Kilvington Drive between the main road and the walkway, throughout the 1940s,” Mr Teasdale said. “My mother and father opened, owned and operated the mixed business and uncle Edward conducted his saddlery/boot repair business in our backyard. “Charles Stapleton’s business was confined to one site and one business - blacksmithing.” Mr Teasdale was quick to say that he related closely to Mr Stapleton when he was growing up and spent a lot of time observing his work. “I think to name it after one man, means that others during that time could be forgotten,” he said. “There were two sides to the walk. “And that’s why I propose the name Forge Lane or Forge Walk.” Calls made to Mr Segman were not returned. What do you think the laneway should be named? Email editorial@yvnews.com.au

Battin reviews his first innings I WOULD like to thank the Gembrook communities for the opportunity to represent you in the Victorian Parliament over the past four years. It is a privilege to work with local community groups and volunteers who dedicate themselves to making our community a better place to live. Governments have to be responsible with spending and ensure we never forget we are handling your money for investment in your community.
The state of
affairs Brad Battin MP
Member for Gembrook
Having experience in running a small business ensured that I understood the operations and accounts for
the Gembrook electorate. As your local Member of Parliament, it is important to deliver on local projects, and I am proud of the projects we have delivered to support residents in the Ranges area including the Gembrook Football Netball Club which now has upgraded lights to allow players train safely for longer. In 2012, it was pleasing to work with Puffing Billy and review their business plan for growth with the increased tourism opportunities from
South East Asia. Funding of $4.38m to maintenance and upgrades and an additional $988,000 to improve level crossings in Emerald, Selby and Clematis will ensure Victoria’s favourite train will continue into the future. Emerald Primary School is under construction with Stage 1 complete. The students and teachers are looking forward to the completion of Stage 2 which includes new art rooms, new classrooms, new sports areas and new administration offices.

Library’s wheel review backs up but with reservations. “The problem is this (flexi) service doesn’t carry anything like the book stock that the old one did, but I think it’s worth giving it a try,” Cr Cox said. Cr Cliff said his concern was that “lots of places” had been dropped off the service, and said he would like to see more places added. Cr Fiona McAllister voted against the motion, saying she had significant issues with taking a quarter of a million dollars out of the library service. “My preference would be that it goes back into the service and I will be looking for that to be reflected when this matter comes back to council,” she said. The pilot program will see Mt Dandenong, Millgrove, Seville, Warburton and Woori Yallock and Kirkbrae Village and Walmsley Village in Kilsyth added to the flexi service. Based on feedback from the community, additional locations could include Belgrave Heights, Ferny Creek and Chirnside Park added. The trial will start in January 2015 and the proposed timetable is on Council’s website - www.yarraranges.vic.gov.au/flexi . Ms Wastie said the community could provide feedback to help shape the trial, including days and locations of stops, before the trial began. Feedback can also be made in writing to j.elward@yarraranges. vic.gov.au or to PO Box 105, Lilydale, 3140, up until 5pm on Friday, 28 November, 2014.

A REVIEW of the mobile library service across Yarra Ranges Shire proposes the end of the B-double library truck in favour of an expanded flexi-service. Yarra Ranges Councillors heard on Tuesday night that the ageing library truck that had served the shire for almost 30 years was past its useby date, was not disability friendly and was unable to travel to some of the more remote places in the shire. In its place the council will trial an expanded mobile library service that includes a new timetable using the smaller flexi-service van. The proposal will provide an annual recurrent saving of over $2.25 million. The review follows a review in August 2011 that saw the Valley Mobile (B-double) replaced with the current flexi-service and the Ranges mobile (B-double) continued as the Ranges Outreach. Yarra Ranges Director Social and Economic Development, Ali Wastie, in response to a question on the meaning of ‘sustainability’ in relation to delivery of the service, said it related to both environmental and social sustainability. She said the flexi-service used less fuel and that in terms of social sustainability visits to the mobile library truck were so low as to indicate it was not meeting guidelines set by the State Government, or community needs. “There are a lot more sustainable ways to deliver library services to the community,” she said. Councillors Len Cox and Noel Cliff supported the six-month trial,

Letters One fell swoop THE recent tree felling on the embankment leading into Mount Evelyn is another example of our council’s inability to properly coordinate works. First, they plant hundreds of shrubs then they decide to cut down the trees. This might not have been so bad if they removed all the newly planted shrubs instead of smashing them with these falling trees. More wasted ratepayers’ money. Idiots. Garry Junkaris, Kalorama.
One ‘load of rubbish’ THE issue of Swinburne Campus Lilydale now enters an extremely tenuous phase as reported in Mount Evelyn Mail ’New TAFE Twist’ Tuesday 14 October . Why turn this into a game of smoke and mirrors, Christine Fyffe, when it’s so serious? You told me personally just a week ago that the used car lot shopfront was a ’load of rubbish’? Well, it appears to be true after all, and now we really look like getting a new car yard ‘Ford Claytons Model’ -‘Flexible Learning Centre’ fix instead of using the purposebuilt but sadly vacant campus on the hill, complete with some vague robot-run video conferencing and transportable training equipment ? Does that mean this ‘model’ actually comes with wheels - perhaps even cartwheels if we are to retain such a flippant approach to higher education? But what does it actually mean? The mind boggles as to how extensive any staffing might be under such a shiny new bonnet? Will this ’model’ be available in
perpetuity or does that offer expire straight after election midnight? Further is Mr Gray merely talking up his windfall $2.25 million, or that shady grey area which is palatable only to those who wish to be fooled until after your reelection when the issue dies another communal death and this time hopefully goes away forever? You voted for a State Budget which ripped the guts out of TAFE and now you wish to make ‘Mickey Mouse’ amends because the proletariat appear to be revolting. And ‘revolting’ is the word when we’re supposed to swallow the notion put forward by Minister Wakeling that ..." Government should not be in the business of... what buildings and what staff they employ..” etc. Wake up and smell the exhaust, sir - that is exactly what we employed you to do, or have you completely forgotten the Public Commission under which your services are rendered? And as for Councillor McCarthy’s “We couldn’t have asked for a better outcome”. How could you possibly misconstrue this new ‘Car Dealership’ as being a ‘great outcome’ for any student? Given the Yarra Ranges Council’s disastrous push earlier to acquire the vacant campus should we now view you and some of your fellow councillors as mere wisps of smoke in Mrs Fyffe’s mirrors? Franc Smith, Mount Evelyn.
State nod for plan I AM pleased to confirm that the Napthine Government has listened to the views of Ferntree Gully traders and residents and has approved the Ferntree Gully Village Structure Plan - helping to protect and preserve the character of the village.
14.95
This is a fantastic result for the Ferntree Gully community and is a demonstration of the Napthine Government delivering planning outcomes that meet the needs of local communities. The new plan protects the unique character of the village - including height restrictions on any future development. The former Labor Government had previously rejected this plan because of its support for themuch-derided Melbourne 2030 planning system. Consequently, this rejection resulted in the construction of a multi-storey development in the village. Pines felled for reason COUNCIL staff, I assume, are having the tall pine trees removed on the south side of York at Mount Evelyn after some one had replanted the area beneath the pines with new plants just a few weeks ago. Now everybody knows that pine needles are toxic and they will kill off any new growth, so who was the turkey who approved this programme in the first place. Now the tall pines are being removed as they should be and all the freshly planted plants have been destroyed in the process. As the old saying goes two steps forward and five backwards. Pub poet stumps up wood art By JODIE SYMONDS Jemima Butterworth and Kristina Beatty are looking forward to re-opening the Micawber Tavern.
Picture: MELISSA MEEHAN
Beer’s back on tap By MELISSA MEEHAN TEN weeks after a large tree flattened parts of the Micawber Tavern, its owners and staff are busily preparing to re-open on Friday. After a week of seriously bad weather, a large tree flattened the office, storeroom, dry cellar and branches fell into the main dining area of the popular Belgrave restaurant in the early hours of Saturday 2 August.
At the time, owner Kristina Beatty said it was a freak chance of luck that she had sent staff home early on Friday night, otherwise the result could have been more devastating. This week, Ms Beatty said it was a huge relief to be able to re-open and provide the community with a place to go and be entertained. “We’ve had a lot of support from the community saying that they
can’t wait for us to re-open,” she said. “So we’re looking forward to seeing some familiar faces.” Damage to the building also meant that Ms Beatty and her family had the chance to freshen up the place while waiting for repairs to take place. “We couldn’t get in here for a while,” she said. “But when we could it was all
hands on deck, we were able to offer our casuals some work to help us with the clean-up.” This not the first time the Micawber Tavern has been devastated by bad weather. Years ago after another week of heavy rain, floodwaters inundated the bottom level, forcing Ms Beatty, her family and friends to close for a week while they cleaned up the mess.
A SELBY resident turned a fallen tree into a work of art. The massive tree that crushed Belgrave’s Micawber Tavern in August inspired Cameron Semmens to create a poetic piece on the stump. The poem called A Truncated Apology detailed the battle between the forceful weather and the tree barely standing in the ground by its roots. Mr Semmens said as he kept passing by he thought how the tree would be a beautiful canvas for his poetry and to explore personification. “I just thought, I wonder what that tree is thinking,” he said. “It is a temporary artwork, since the stump has now been removed which is good. Having lived in Selby for two years, Mr Semmens said the mountain ashes amaze him how they battle gravity.

STUDENTS at Mount Dandenong Primary School have been working with local artists to complete a piece of artwork for their upcoming art show. Teacher Liz Kennedy said this year was the third art show. “All the artwork was created by students working with artists from our school and the wider community along with the assistance from a dedicated group of parents,” she said. “The art program at the school is highly regarded and valued and the artwork showcases the creativity and talent of the students at the school,” teacher Michelle Lawrence said.

Farming’s best on show By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM SUNNY skies and friendly faces greeted visitors to the annual Wandin-Silvan Field Days held at the Wandin East Recreation Reserve last weekend. Drawing a crowd of around 5000 people, the two-day event offers local exhibitors the opportunity to showcase the very latest in horticultural, agricultural and farming equipment as well as industry practices. Field Days president Darren Sibley said that this year’s event was a great success with guests enjoying the relaxed and friendly atmosphere. “There’s something for everyone and the kids just love it. It’s a great family day out. “We get a lot of locals but also a number of visitors to the area.” Celebrating its 45th anniversary this year, proceeds from the event provide essential funding to community groups such as the CFA. Local primary schools were also involved by providing a range of food and drinks for sale over the weekend. There was also a photo competition with $1000 prize-money donated by the Wandin-Seville branch of the Bendigo Bank. Winning photos will be on display at the branch until 7 November. For more photos from the event or information on future Field Days visit www.wandinsilvanfielddays.com.au

the missing piece of the puzzle. Aware of the political environment, Mr Bakens agreed that it would also be great if the Liberal Party were to also pledge their support for the revamp of the facilities at Belgrave South. “We’re very pleased with the funding announced by James,” Mr Bakens said. “We now have the support from three levels of government, the community bank and the community.”

IT’S the final piece of the puzzle. If elected, the Labor Party will build a new community pavilion and playground at Belgrave South Recreation Reserve. The Reserve is a community sporting facility used by local clubs and organisations, such as the South Belgrave Football Club and South Belgrave Cricket Club. Labor’s $500,000 plan for the new community pavilion and playground will give local clubs and organisations the facilities they need to grow. Funding is contingent on a council contribution. Monbulk incumbent MP James Merlino said he was pleased to make the announcement which meant more than a dozen community groups and clubs in Belgrave South would benefit from the project. “The Belgrave South Community has worked extraordinarily hard over many years to

TWO famous Victorian icons with a horse-power connection came together at Belgrave last week. The 18-carat gold Melbourne Cup was the star attraction at Puffing Billy railway station on Tuesday as part of the Victorian Racing Club’s 16-week Emirates Melbourne Cup tour of Australia and New Zealand. The tour provides community groups, councils, schools and tourism and racing bodies with a chance to celebrate and raise funds for local causes as it travels more than 350,000 kilometres to 270 destinations in the lead- up to the big day at Flemington in November. Students from Belgrave’s St Thomas More Primary School, Puffing Billy staff and volunteers and international visitors heading off on the first train ride of the day were among visitors who were thrilled to see the $175,000 trophy in real life. Engine driver Graeme Daniel and students Jacob and Mackay Bateson donned white gloves for a chance to hold the trophy which is part of a 154-year history of racing in Victoria, and the prize for an event that is watched by millions of people across the world each year.

Brigade all set for boost By CASEY NEILL MEMBERSHIP and safety boosts are on the cards for Clematis CFA thanks to a proposed $1.25 million project. Gembrook MP Brad Battin and Police and Emergency Services and Bushfire Response Minister Kim Wells announced on Monday last week that a re-elected Coalition State Government would deliver a $900,000 station upgrade and a $350,000 truck. Captain Jarryd Miller said the brigade was overdue for a new medium-sized truck to replace its 17-year-old model but that the most modern design couldn’t fit into the current station. The shed was built in the early 1970s and didn’t even have toilets until 2001. “We’re one of the only stations like this that’s left at the moment, that hasn’t had an upgrade in quite some time,” Capt Miller said.
“It’s very hard to attract members when they can go to a brigade that’s right next door where you’ve got a brand new station. “We’re really hoping that a new station and new truck will boost our membership.” The new truck would improve communications and safety. “Words can’t even describe how big it will be,” Capt Miller said. “With the new crew cab you don’t have guys on the back in the elements, they’re not breathing in smoke – they can sit in the nice air-conditioned cabin with the rest of the crew.” The truck would join a $100,000 light tanker, which the brigade received funding for earlier this year. “We’re going to have three vehicles that can carry water, which is really good for the area,” Captain Miller said.
The Clematis crew services the surrounding area as well as the suburb’s 350 homes, and helps out around Victoria and interstate during summer. It has 35 members, including juniors, and attends an average of 100 call-outs each year. “And we get out to 100 per cent of callouts,” Capt Miller said. He took over the role from his dad Shane in July and said it was weird following in his footsteps. “I was first lieutenant for three years, by his side,” he said. “That made the transition a lot easier. It’s been planned 12 months in advance, for him to step down and me to take over. Nothing’s changed that much, we’re very similar in our leadership style.” Mr Battin recently completed a CFA minimum skills course at Clematis.

Seniors, students comparing notes By JESSE GRAHAM

IT was a day of students, seniors and selfies at the Puffing Billy last week, when hundreds of people took a train trip to celebrate Senior’s Week. Students from Mater Christi in Belgrave joined senior residents from around the Yarra Ranges on Wednesday 15 October for a special day out, taking the steam train from Belgrave to Emerald. Around 19 students from the school mingled with the seniors, having conversations and even helping them to navigate smartphones and tablet com-
puters, taking self-portraits (or ‘selfies’) with them. Deputy principal of Wellbeing at Mater Christi, Carmel Feeney, said the day was a fantastic opportunity for the younger students to interact with seniors and learn their stories. “I think that respect grows with knowing, and when you get to meet people and talk with them and get to know their story, you can develop more respect for older people,” Ms Feeney said. The group rode on Puffing Billy to Emerald, where they had lunch together, took walks and talked together, before returning to Belgrave in the afternoon.
Ms Feeney said the students received glowing feedback from the seniors, with an email coming in shortly after the event, praising the students for their engaging conversations. “It was a gorgeous thing - when they were leaving, the students wanted to say goodbye to particular people because they’d had a lovely day,” she said. The event also gave one elderly resident, 96-year-old Stewart Cook, the chance to have his first-ever trip on the steam train. The 2014 Victorian Seniors’ Festival ran from 5-12 October.

Dying trade is kept alive By KATH GANNAWAY BLACKSMITHS from all over Australia were at Wandin on Sunday 12 October, as the annual Australian Blacksmith Convention fired up at Mont De Lancey Historic Homestead. The Blacksmith Shop is an integral part of the homestead with enthusiasts meeting each weekend to hone the craft. “Our aim is to keep the blacksmithing craft alive by demonstrating and sharing the knowledge and skills of forging with hammer and anvil,” Mont De Lancey’s Jill Sebire said. The Blacksmith Shop is the focus of the convention, but with market stalls, medieval reenactments and craft tables, the event is also an increasingly popular day for families. Mont De Lancey is now forging ahead with plans for their next big event, the Draught Horse Festival on 22 and 23 November.

Speeding drivers push their luck in Upwey POLICE from the State Highway Patrol had a busy day, catching 77 offenders as a part of Operation Moto Safe in Upwey on Wednesday. Of the 77, 64 were speedrelated offences which included three drivers losing their licence and one impound. One of the speeding drivers, a 19-year-old Berwick man, was detected at 111km/h in a 70km/h zone. The P-plate driver was issued with a $627 infringe-
ment notice and immediately lost his licence for the next six months. “This behaviour is unacceptable,” Senior Sergeant Dan Hilton of the State Highway Patrol Solo Unit said. “We’re very lucky that these incidents didn’t result in a fatality. “We’ve seen what speed, distraction and general disregard of the road laws can lead to and it needs to stop.”
In addition to the speedrelated offences, police also issued infringements regarding mobile phone use and unroadworthy vehicles. Operation Moto Safe is a region-wide operation, aimed at reducing road trauma involving motorcyclists. Victoria Police is currently conducting its biggest ever road safety campaign, including 43 local operations and 22 State Highway Patrol operations.

Emily’s passion: befriending animals By MELISSA MEEHAN EMERALD’S Emily Williams has made at least two furry friends from her time at Forever Friends in Macclesfield. Her affinity with animals is obvious as soon as you meet her and two rescue dogs Paddy and Bridie. As part of ECHO’s youth mentoring program, Emily decided she wanted to do something with animals, and ever since has been lending a helping hand to Saskia Adams and her team at Forever Friends.
The Emerald Secondary College student clearly has an affection for animals, with her mum Sharon recalling how her daughter often, even at just three years of age, wanting to help animals big and small. “We are a group of volunteers that rescue dogs from being euthanised and re-home them,” Ms Adams said. “Last year alone, we saved between 200 and 300 cats and dogs, kittens, and even some guinea pigs by rehabilitating them and finding them a forever home.”
All done without funding, Forever Friends relies on donations and fund-raising, so were rapt when Emily wanted to help. “We’re going to hold a fund-raiser on 26 October,” Emily said. “At the Wetlands Mini Golf from 10.30am onwards.” Those who can attend will be able to play a game for $25 a person, or $80 for a family - all money raised will go to Forever Friends. Bookings are essential, www.trybooking.com/107060.
UPWEY Primary school had their kids all aboard at sea adventure as the whole school took to the stage for one special night. From the Preps through to Grade 6, the students took parents, relatives and friends on Sinbad’s Treasure adventure at the Burrinja Theatre. The primary school puts on a production every two years with the help of parents and staff who contribute to the making of the costumes and set design. “They did a magnificent job, the set was full of colour and flair,” principal Malcolm Aspinall said. The production followed a seventh generation search for treasure with lots of interesting characters along the way, including King Neptune. The students sang and danced as they were transformed into merpeople,

Automatic transmission choice OMEGA Automotive Services Centre has been operating in Upwey for nine years, following 17 years at Wandin North. Business owner David Clark has 26 years’ experience in the automotive industry. Not only is he a qualified motor mechanic but also a highly qualified automatic transmission specialist. David is a member of the VACC Automotive Transmission Specialist committee, so he receives up-to-date information. Due to the industry changing rapidly, David and his staff attend frequent
seminars to keep their training at the absolute peak. They also have the latest workshop equipment to communicate with all modern vehicles. “Most people think having your vehicle serviced includes an automatic transmission service,” David said. “Unfortunately this is not the case. “Just like you service your engine every six months or 10,000 kilometres, your automatic transmission should be serviced every 12 months or 20,000 kilometres, whichever occurs first.”
“
Most people think having your vehicle serviced includes an automatic transmission service … Unfortunately this is not the case… David Clark
A transmission service involves replenishing the oil and filter, just like your engine.
“As the sump is removed this generally enables us to recognise a problem before it becomes serious or costly,” David said.
“You will prolong the life of your transmission, improve vehicle reliability and save money in the future. “Need a little more motivation? Ask us how much it would cost for a complete transmission rebuild – you might be shocked.” Omega not only provides service for the local community, it also supplies reconditioned automatic and manual transmissions to the trade. Omega Automotive Services Centre is at 76 Main Street, Upwey. Call David and Lisa Clark on 9754 7533.

By STEVE UTTING ANOTHER big week for the Monbulk Juniors, as the club added another U10 team. The club now has seven Junior teams, including two U11 and two U10 teams. The Milo in2cricket registration was also held on Friday night and it looks like being another big year, with about 80 kids registered already. Thanks to Damian Howard for his superb organisation of the night. Milo sessions start on 7 November, along with the U10s and U11s. On the field, the U15s had their first win. With three U13s filling in, they defeated Aura Vale by 31 runs. Thomas Badgery batted well to retire on 25, Flynn Trewavis finished on 19no and U13 player Josh Spencer made 17no as well as taking 2/6. The U17s and U15s both had good games but lost on the day to stronger opposition. The top three senior sides started two-
day matches, and the fourths lost a close one. Great to see so many of the Juniors (U17s & U13s) playing in the seniors and doing well, including Daniel Cleary’s bowling in the 2s, Aaron Gillard remains not out in the 3s and Travis Wills making 35 in the fourths. U17 - Monbulk 8/56 lost to Knoxfield 6/102. U15 - Monbulk 4/112 (T. Badgery 25no, F. Trewavis 19no, J.Spencer 17no) defeated Aura Vale 5/81 (J. Spencer 2/6). U13 - Monbulk 6/48 (T.Utting 9no, T. Fleischer 9) lost to Knox Gardens 4/75 (run outs to C. Dennison, J. Spencer). 1st XI - Monbulk 160 (A. Powell 42) v The Basin 0/19. 2nd XI - The Basin 243 (R. Howard 3/60, D. Maher 3/62) V Monbulk. 3rd XI - Monbulk 1/60 (A. Gillard not out) v Johnson Park 7/84 (J. Heard 3/11). 4th XI - Monbulk 115 (T. Wills 35) lost to Aura Vale 7/123.
Birnie spins a web around Tiger innings By STEVE BROWN FTGDCA UPPER Ferntree Gully leg spinner Robbie Birnie caused the Upwey Tecoma batsmen a few problems as he tore through the Tigers innings to claim impressive figures of 5/46. Another five-wicket haul against Belgrave in the opening round has his confidence soaring. Upwey could only muster 134 with Mitchell Hewitt 44 and Steve Moore 37 the only batsmen to get a start, however the Tigers bowlers struck back at stumps to have the Kings 3/39 in a game that will finish early next week. The match at Fairpark between Johnson Park and Belgrave is also in the balance as the pitch was taking spin at both ends. Home side Johnson Park scored a below par 167 as Bryn Gaunt returned to the crease without touching a cricket bat to top score for the Sharks with 68, but it was the spin of Ben Carnell (4/24) and John Levell (3/59) who turned the game. The Magpies are 2/33 in reply and have a little work to do, but should bring it home. Knoxfield wicket-keeper Jayden Raab scored his first half century in Reeves Shield as the Knights piled on 244 against Ferntree Gully at the Wally Tew Oval. Kane Murphy gave good support with 45 while young fast bowler Patrick Turner collected 4/32. The Gully batsmen must fire this week in pursuit of a difficult total at this time of the year. Monbulk’s 160 won’t be enough against The Basin who are 0/19 overnight at Batterham Park and chasing their third win. Lomax Medallist Aaron Powell was the only Hawks batsman to trouble the scorers with 43 as Matthew Heskes (3/59) bowled the Bears into a winning position. Reigning premiers Eildon Park continue to play consistent cricket setting 231 at home to Knox Gardens. This time it was Ben Morris with an impressive 78 who led the charge, well supported by Nathan Hicks (53). Adam Wild took 4/42 and Scott McInerney 4/13 for the Falcons who had to survive a short period at the crease before the end of play and was 0/7. Scores Reeves Shield Johnson Park 167 (Gaunt 68, Carnell 4/24, Levell 3/59) vs Belgrave 2/33 Upwey Tecoma 134 (Mitch Hewitt 44, Moore 37, Birnie 5/46) vs Upper Gully 3/39 Monbulk 160 (Powell 43, M. Athletes head to head WEEK three of Yarra Ranges Athletics summer season provided the opportunities for each of the four clubs to go head to head. With club colours (yellow, blue, red and green) visible around the ground, the day was destined for excitement, intrigue and competitiveness. Perfect weather enabled athletes to really enjoy the atmosphere and the athletic events which included much-loved relay events. After presentation of the club captains and the colourful march (run) past, events got underway. First up was an excited group of Under 6-8 year olds in the shuttle relay. The fun and laughter from that event spilled over to the remainder of the morning. The friendly competition continued throughout the day, culminating in the exciting relays. Final results will not be known until next weekend when one of the four clubs will have bragging rights for the next 12 months. During the week several club athletes represented their respective primary schools at the Eastern Region Championships with many athletes qualifying for the State Championships in a week’s time.
We also had many athletes at the State Secondary Schools championships. Congratulations to all the athletes for some superb efforts and excellent results. Round two of the AV Shield was held on Sunday. It was great to see another excellent turnout from our senior athletes and some great performances, with many athletes competing in multiple events and even trying some new events. I lost count of the number of PBs achieved throughout the day. One of the best efforts of the day was from Malcolm Duncan who competed in six events, not a bad effort for a 50-plus athlete. Next week we have normal competition on Saturday, followed by the Box Hill relays on Sunday. Always a fun day, we look forward to seeing as many athletes as possible having a run. All our athletes have access to top coaching from our caring, committed and highly qualified coaches, who are making a big impact on the athletes already working with them. If you and your child would like to be part of the club, please contact us by going to our website atwww. yarrarangesathletics.org.au.

Broc has the lot By DENNIS FULLER THE last round of the Emerald Golf Club Championship was played last Saturday, with teenage maestro Broc Reynolds leading the field after two solid rounds. The three leaders of each grade played together so they could keep an eye on the opposition and sledge where inappropriate. By the time the A Graders hit the 18th tee the game was over as young tyro Reynolds hung tough and extended his lead to win by 10 strokes with a total of 246 to be Club Champion for the first time. In second place was Ken Hill on 256 and Mike Litchfield stormed in from the pack to be third with 257. The A Grade handicap section was also won by Reynolds with 202 from Hill on 211 and Peter Glasscock in third place on 219. The B Grade championship placings did not change at all with Leigh Morison leading the field into the final round to win with 257 from Allan Ecclestone on 264 followed by Con Whitlock on 277. The B Grade handicap gong also went to Morison on 203 followed by Ecclestone on 207 and Ian Scott was third on 211. The daily comp saw a resounding win by Peter Clowes (18) with a net 63 and the right to laud it over the B
Reynolds in action during the tournament. Grade crowd as well as the rest. A Grade saw Mike Litchfield (11) play an excellent round for a net 68. From the rest of the crowd there was a mob finishing with 69. These included Reynolds, Glasscock, Ben Hardie, Ben Balfour and Whitlock. In the ladies’ championship Brianna McCoy stood head and shoulders above the pack to win by such a distance the others faded to black. On Wednesday when the Old and Feeble Golfers
(OFG) staggered in the game was a stableford event in pairs with the pairs only being drawn after play. When play ended all wanted to be drawn, with Ken Hill (13) as he came in with 43 points. The lottery was done and he was drawn with Ian Scott (26) who came in with 38 to give them a winning total of 79. They were two points up on Ben Balfour 37 and Brianna McCoy on 40 for a combined 77. Next Saturday with the championship out of the way, a quiet game of stableford is on the menu.
