Youths charged with Sunrise fire By JOLENE OGLE TWO youths have been charged for deliberately lighting the out-of-control blaze at Sunrise Beach, which threatened a nearby retirement home. The fire, which started at around 11am on Thursday (16 October), burnt more than 15 hectares of grasslands behind the sports

oval on Dame Patti Drive, Sunrise Beach. Two water-bombing helicopters and 25 ground crews were brought in to help contain the fire, which burnt for almost two days. Strong winds on the Thursday only fanned the flames, creating a 300 metre fire front and causing smoke haze to cover most of the coastal region. Noosa Fire and Rescue Inspector and

Area Commander Rob Frey said the fire rapidly became out of control and threatened to cross the hill and spread to Noosa Springs and throughout Sunrise Beach. Mr Frey said it was a combined effort that eventually brought the fire under control. “The urban and rural fire services worked very well together to attack the fire,” he said. Continued on page 10

Border dispute By JONATHON HOWARD THE battle to include four additional suburbs into the Noosa Shire has entered a new phase as opposing sides of the debate clashed in a heated exchange outside the Noosa Council chambers on Monday, 20 October. On the one hand, those residents eager to include Eumundi, Doonan, Verrierdale and Weyba Downs into the Noosa Shire were represented by the EDV (Eumundi, Doonan and Verrierdale) Residents Group, who had

made a submission to Noosa Council to rally further support should the reboundary go ahead. On the flipside, members of the Sunshine Coast Alliance staged a protest against the EDV Residents Group’ application, demanding the Noosa Council reject it on the grounds that it raises conflicts of interest and the desire to retain divisional councillors under the Sunshine Coast Council. EDV Residents Group president Johanne Wright entered a verbal

slugging match with Sunshine Coast Alliance president Steve Bennett and the fangs were out. The two fired accusations at one another as camera crews and media representatives vied for photo opportunities and voices of support were heard from both sides. The sledging turned nasty when Mr Bennett asked Ms Wright to clarify her involvement with the Noosa Parks Association and whether she had provided funds to a particular councillor in order for him to run for Noosa Council.

Ms Wright shot back and criticised Mr Bennett for his comments in relation to Noosa Council and labelled him a “pro-developer” who she said aligns himself with the Sunshine Coast Council’s pro-development agenda. Residents from either side joined the verbal sledging, with most accusing each another of concealing their “hidden agendas”. Noosa Council brought the EDV submission ahead on the list of motions as the chamber filled with

members of both groups. All councillors were present and discussions around the matter lasted several minutes with Cr Tony Wellington as chair. The councillors determined that although the Noosa Council had no direct say over whether the re-boundary bid would take place, council would support the move should the Minister for Local Government decide to progress with the matter. The toads that ruled... By JONATHON HOWARD A TEWANTIN resident is making a desperate plea for help to eradicate a colony of cane toads developing in a freshwater pool at Alexandria Bay. Thousands of the notorious introduced cane toads are in the final stages of development and they, like thousands before them, are likely to start hopping into the Noosa National Park any day now. Zigrid Georges said action was needed to eradicate the cane toads and prevent future colonies from establishing. “The tadpoles have developed legs and are moving onto land,” she said. “Another week and Noosa National Park will become a feeding ground for thousands of new cane toads that have been allowed to infiltrate the area because of total inaction by personnel in charge of the Noosa National Park.” Ms Georges said she and a group of friends had tried their best to remove thousands and thousands of cane toad spawn in the shallow pool during the past six months. She now believes the only way to stem the constant spawning of toads is to drain the freshwater pool. “A variety of people have

Ms Georges said her calls for immediate assistance had gone unanswered prompting her to contact Noosa Today. “Nothing has been done - it is now beyond individual persons, a concerted action to empty the pool seems like the

only solution,” she said. “I feel totally disheartened and do not know who else could help with averting this non-conservation tragedy happening on our doorstep. “If this is published and someone out there knows a solution, please, please help - it has to be done this week.” Noosa Today has raised Ms Georges’ concerns with Parks and Wildlife. A spokesperson said the current focus was

on controlling declared pests in protected estate, including foxes, pigs and cats. The cane toad was not a declared pest in Queensland, so there was no legal mandate for their control, or an available effective broad scale control. Creep leads teen up Gumtree By JONATHON HOWARD A COOROY teenager has revealed her nightmare scam experience online after she applied for a Noosa waitressing job posted on the Gumtree website. Hannah Cavanagh spoke on coastal radio and posted her story on social media urging other female jobseekers to be cautious with their personal details on resumes. Ms Cavanagh said she had applied for a “waitress / bar tending” position advertised in Noosa via the Gumtree Noosa website. She said a mystery man phoned her almost immediately and at first he sounded genuine. “Then it turned into a nightmare,” she said. “He asked me to attend

Meanwhile, Ms Cavanagh urged women to be extra careful. “Please be careful when applying for jobs and supplying your personal details,” she said. Her comments caused a social media storm with several short-sighted commentors blaming Ms Cavanagh, while others wrote messages of support and gratitude for her bringing this issue into the spotlight. CANE TOAD BREEDING They breed in still or slow-flowing water often tangling the spawn around rocks or water plants. The appearance of cane toad spawn is unique in Australia and consists of long gelatinous strings with double rows of black eggs. Females lay 8,000 to 35,000 eggs at a time and usually breed twice a year and the eggs hatch in 48-72 hours into tadpoles. They develop into toad-lets in between 17 days to six months. Cane toads need between six and 18 months to reach sexual maturity and have a lifespan of about five years. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS According to the CSIRO cane toads are not officially recognised as a threatening process in Australia, because not all states consider toads to be a problem. Only animals that are of national significance are officially recognised as pests. Although no extensive environmental monitoring studies have been undertaken, there is evidence of the environmental impacts of cane toads. A decline in quoll numbers and native frogs in areas where large numbers of cane toads are found has been recorded. Cane toads eat mainly insects, but will eat any small creature that fits in their mouth. They also eat honey bees and are likely to compete for food with native animals. In addition they may carry diseases that could be transmitted to native frogs and fishes. CURRENT CONTROL ACTIVITIES There is currently no effective control method that can be applied to the vast area where cane toads have spread. In some areas, bounty systems have been established with community involvement. Such systems carry with them the danger of incorrect identification; at times two-thirds of animals brought in turn out to be harmless native frogs. CSIRO scientists are working with gene technology to find a biological control method. Scientists at the University of Adelaide are trying to find a sex pheromone in cane toads that may be used to disrupt their breeding cycle. Source: CSIRO

Mass murder memorial By JONATHON HOWARD EVERY day hundreds of busy commuters and holiday makers drive past Murdering Creek Road unaware of the horrendous events that took place there so many years ago. But a forum at the Noosa Museum in Pomona this Saturday, 25 October, will raise the idea of memorialising Murdering Creek Road on the banks of Weyba Lake. The idea has captured the attention of Indigenous Gubbi Gubbi Elder Dr Eve Fesl (OAM, PhD) who has voiced her support for the memorialisation of the massacre that took place at Murdering Creek Road about 150 years ago. The memorialising of Murdering Creek Road was just one of the hot topics expected to be raised during the Noosa Museum’s Past Present and Future Forum. The forum will also hear from Noosa Councillor Tony Wellington who will speak about the council’s new democracy program which will assist council decision making, an update about the Mill Point archaeological project and the future of koala habitats across the Noosa Biosphere. Speaking with Noosa Today, Dr Fesl said the memorialising of Murdering Creek Road was an important step for Noosa and for local Indigenous people would be as significant as Anzac Day commemorations. “While I haven’t seen the specifics of the forum or proposal yet, I support the idea of memorialising the events that took place at Murdering Creek Road,” she said.

“This would be significant recognition and something that local Indigenous people would view as important as Anzac Day.” THE STORY BEHIND MURDERING CREEK THE story of Murdering Creek Road is one of deceit by English colonists towards a group of unsuspecting Indigenous people who had encroached on livestock and farmland. While accounts of the event are patchy, it’s believed early relations between the Gubbi Gubbi tribe and Europeans became acrimonious after local Indigenous people were deprived of their hunting grounds. The people began to spear livestock owned by the ever encroaching settlers and the reaction from the settlers was nothing short of brutal. One version of the events suggested that an armed party was put together by the Yandina Station manager and they were said to have set up an ambush along the banks of what is still called, Murdering Creek. One of the party members waded out into the lake as a decoy and lured nearby Aboriginal fishermen into the line of gunfire. How many deaths occurred is unknown, but tens of thousands of years of aboriginal occupation was over by the end of the century, about 40 years after Europeans entered the area. Reminders of Gubbi Gubbi tribal life are still evident today around Lake Weyba in the form of extensive shell middens, scar or canoe trees and even a large stone fish trap in the southern end of the lake.

President of the Noosa Museum Jeanette Alfredson stands next to a stone that was taken from Lake Wayba near Murdering Creek Road to Sydney. The stone, believed to have been used by traditional Gubbi Gubbi landowners was recently returned to Noosa.

Scientist in the making finds Rotary sponsors THE Rotary Club of Noosa has continued its tradition of sponsoring and nurturing a student of today to become a scientist of tomorrow, by sending a student to the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF). Each year Rotary Noosa sends one lucky student to the Science Forum, which took place in Perth earlier this year. The Good Shepherd Lutheran College Year 12 student Andrew Douw was selected to attend the forum. Andrew showed such passion for science that he was selected from 140 students to attend a follow-up science conference in South Africa. He recently returned from South Africa with even more knowledge and determination to

make a difference in his chosen field of nanotechnology. He was among several visitors to the Rotary Club of Noosa’s monthly meeting on Monday, 13 October, at the Noosa RSL. The meeting also attracted special guest and Rotary District Governor George Grant and his partner Mary. Andrew said he hoped to use his smarts to make a difference in the puzzling world of nanotechnology. “Nanotechnology is the process of constructing materials and devices atom by atom,” he explains. “I hope to contribute to this field in the form of conducting research in a laboratory.” Andrew said he was thankful for the opportunity given to him by Rotary Noosa and said his visit

to South Africa was “incredible”. “I found South Africa to be an absolutely incredible country, diverse in both culture and science, and I greatly appreciate the opportunity to experience the National Youth Science Week,” he said. “Some of the most inspirational people in my life are the everyday professors and researchers that are working away in the laboratory to create a better world for everyone. “Before I attended the National Youth Science Forum, I was unsure exactly of what sort of career I wanted to pursue. “Through the hands-on laboratory visits and the scientific presentations at the NYSF, I really discovered my calling. “My journey to South Africa served to strengthen my aspirations to pursue a research-based profession.”

Facelift all round

NOOSA Council has moved to have several environmentally sensitive land parcels protected under the conservation tenure and gazetted as National Park. The matter was raised during this council’s Planning and Organisation Committee meeting on Tuesday, 14 October, with a final councillor vote expected next Thursday, 23 October. The land parcels cover more than 660 hectares and includes Boreen Parade, Tarangau Station (Cootharaba), Noosa North Shore (eastern beach), Marcus Beach and Lake Cooroibah Road. The move follows more than 31 parcels of land purchased for protection since 1996 and covers approximately 1400 hectares. “There are nine parcels of land that were

purchased through the Environment Levy or jointly with State and Commonwealth funds,” the council report read. “The parcels have not been placed under conservation tenure (and) in some cases these lands were purchased between seven and 11 years ago.” The protection of sensitive sand dunes at Marcus Dunes was high on the list of priorities for council. “Marcus Dunes is a significant high dune coastal landform with dry heath and Banksia woodland - current tenure is Unallocated State Land (USL) and because it adjoins Noosa National Park, it is preferable that this property also be gazetted as National Park.” the report read. The motion was pending a councillor vote during council’s ordinary meeting next week.

By JOLENE OGLE RENOVATIONS are underway at the Cooroy RSL, with plans to revamp the club and create a modern street front to appeal to a wider range of people. Club manager Tina Bernard said the venue was for everyone and anyone looking to enjoy a night out on a budget. The planned renovations will open up the club and create a modern feel. “We want everyone to know we are the perfect place for a night out in Cooroy,” Ms Bernard said. The renovations will include two new floor-to-ceiling windows along the front wall, which will open the club and allow natural light to flow into the venue. New modern decor will replace the current furnishings, but the same friendly service and budget menu will remain. Ms Bernard said they expected the renovations to have a positive effect on the local community, creating a much more attractive street frontage for the venue. “We’re in the centre of town and it will be great to let the light and air into the venue and give the club a facelift,” she said. “We’re looking forward to widening our scope and appealing to the young people in town as well as our faithful club patrons. We will offer more for the community once the renovations are complete,” she said. The renovations are expected to be completed by 29 November, but in the meantime the Cooroy RSL commu-

The current Cooroy RSL street front. nity bus has also had a facelift. The Cooroy RSL Club decided to thank its sponsors by placing on the bus the logos of the many local businesses, who help keep the Sub-Branch Community Bus on the road. Funds from the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Cooroy RSL Sub-Branch and the Cooroy RSL Club made the purchase of the bus possible, and sponsorship from businesses such as the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank, have helped keep the bus on the road. Ms Bernard said the bus was a great partnership as the financial assistance provided by the local sponsors enabled the club to run and maintain the bus, which would be used to raise essential funds for the club’s ongoing operations. “The bus has become a really popular part of what we do in our community. It’s driven by local volunteer drivers and they do an amazing job for us,” she said. “There’s a strong focus on using the bus for community welfare work as well as the popular courtesy bus service to the club. It often involves getting club members to and

from medical appointments, outings from aged care facilities, shopping trips and other community work.” Being wheel-chair friendly, the bus has been well received by those in need of this feature, particularly returned service men and women who are now able to schedule their visits. When the van isn’t in use for welfare purposes, it takes on the role of a courtesy bus to pick up and drop off club patrons from Thursday to Sunday nights. The Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank is one of the local sponsors and manager of the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank Geoff Edwards said the relationship with the bank and Cooroy RSL was strengthening all the time. “I think it’s great when businesses can work together to create better community outcomes,” Geoff said. “Our branch has recently sponsored the purchase of Cooroy RSL Club’s new staff uniforms and we’re also supporting the club with the building extensions about to get underway.”

Push for peace, tolerance

INBRIEF Snow fined for nudity A SYDNEY man has been fined for being naked at the popular Alexandria Bay, which is commonly mistaken as a legal nudist beach. Glenn Snow wasn’t in Noosa Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, but entered a plea of guilty to one charge of wilful exposure through his defence lawyer. The court heard the 44-year-old town planner was naked on A-Bay beach on 1 October when a family with three children, who were bathing nearby, made a complaint to police. Snow’s defence lawyer said her client had assumed the beach was a legal nudist beach, having bathed there for more than 10 years as a regular visitor to Noosa. The court heard Snow had no intention of offending anyone and was deeply embarrassed about the incident. The case highlights the need for clarification in regards to nudity on A-Bay beach, which has been used as a nudist beach for many years, even holding the nude Olympics.

By JOLENE OGLE MORE than 100 students are expected to gather to write messages of tolerance and support at a planned peace rally at the local university on 29 October. Brothers, Lachlan and Liam McKinnie, who both study at the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC), have planned the rally to promote acceptance and tolerance among the community. “This event will be a celebration of acceptance for all people, no matter their ethnicity, religion or sexual identity,” Lachlan said. “As part of this rally, we will be offering people the chance to sign a pledge stating that the Sunshine Coast is a community of peace that accepts all people.” Liam said he hoped the rally would bring a better understanding of “misunderstood” groups to the wider community, with all who attend writing messages of support on cards and using the cards to create a large peace sign on the lawn at the university. “In today’s political climate and popular discourses, there is a high level of anxiety and fear of people ... who identify with misunderstood groups,” Liam said. “This is alienating people and dividing our communities. We are organising this peace rally to promote understanding and to bring people together,” he said. The peace rally comes as a response to the Church Street mosque site rally in Maroochydore, which saw pro-tolerance and anti-Muslim protesters engage in

Peace rally organiser Lachlan McKinnie is hoping to share a message of peace, tolerance during a rally at USC on 29 October. an angry clash in September. While the brothers don’t expect any resistance to the planned rally, they said anyone who disagreed with their message was welcome to attend the event.

“If a small number of people want to peacefully disagree they do have their right to do so,” Liam said. “We will have a level of security at the event, if necessary. If the chance of a disruptive protest

increased, we will plan accordingly.” The peace rally will take place on 29 October, from 11am, on the lawn in front of the Brasserie at USC.

A 27-YEAR-OLD local chef has been fined for carrying a weapon after police stopped his vehicle in Noosaville. Kristopher Blizzard pleaded guilty in Noosa Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday to one count of unlawful possession of a weapon. The court heard police saw Blizzard’s car swerving across the road before they asked him to pull over. A search of the vehicle found a Taser gun in Blizzard’s gym bag on the passenger seat of his car. Blizzard was previously convicted in 2004, when he was 17, for having knuckledusters and nun chucks, which his defence lawyer said were part of his martial arts training gear.

Smart Pups are life-savers By JOLENE OGLE “IT’S like getting your heart ripped out.” That’s how it felt for Judith Anschutz when she realised her eightyear-old autistic daughter, Frances, had run from home. “You frantically search the house, panic, call the police and then jump in the car and drive around,” she said. Known as eloping or wandering, running away is a common symptom for people diagnosed with autism, but that doesn’t make it any easier for the parents left to frantically search for their children. Frances, whose speech is still developing, has eloped four times. She was once found walking down the middle of the street, another time she ran in front of a garbage truck, and the most recent time she was found by Sunshine Butterflies founder Leanne Walsh at the now deserted Tewantin TAFE campus. “It was terrifying,” Leanne said. “We were lucky to find her safe, but it could have been a much more tragic day.” Judith says she is vigilant at home, double locking every door, but a split second can see Frances slip out the side door and onto the street. “Frances is a happy spirit. She loves to get out in the world and explore,” Judith said. “She likes to go on an adventure and I guess because it can be so hard to communicate what she wants and where she wants to go that she just takes herself.” But Judith said she needed help and had applied for a Smart Pup – a Labrador or Retriever dog, which is specially trained to help children who suffer

Frances, pictured with mum Judith Anschutz and Sunshine Butterflies founder Leanne Walsh, loves to express herself through art and crafts, drawing many of her favourite Winnie the Pooh characters. from seizures or have been diagnosed with autism. Smart Pup founder Patricia McAlister says the dogs are trained for 12 months, and can help children who elope by becoming an anchor when the child is tethered to the dog, or by alerting the parents or carers if the child has or is going to elope. Ms McAlister said Smart Pups had already placed more than 30 assistance dogs throughout Australia, but with 500 applications currently pending and a price tag of $25,000, it could be a long wait for an assistance dog. Judith said she had already been approved for an assistance dog for Frances, but needed to raise a further $16,500 to purchase the Smart Pup. “An assistance dog can be trained to track Frances. So when she elopes, she can be tracked and the dog will stay with her to make sure she is safe,” Judith said.

“The dog will also let me know if Frances has or is going to elope.” For Judith, a Smart Pup can help save her daughter’s life, but public education can also play an important role. “I just want everyone to know about eloping and to be alert if they see a child running down the street alone,” she said. Judith said she never knew about eloping until Frances first ran away, and said being prepared by providing the police with a current photo could make all the difference in finding a child. “They say the first hour is the most important for survival,” Judith said. If you want to help Judith and Francis get a Smart Pup, donations are welcome through the Sunshine Butterflies website, www.sunshinebutterflies. com.au/personalfundraising.

So – what makes Pomona so friendly? Coffee Extra employee Josh Bingham, 23, grew up in Pomona and knows the town like the back of his hand. “I like the friendliness of the town – you can walk the streets and talk to anyone,” he said. “My tip for visitors would be to climb Mount Cooroora, but when you reach the top don’t stop there, continue to the right and all will be revealed.” Coffee Extra owner Deb Vassallo was meant to spend five years in Pomona – 18 years later, she’s still not ready to leave. “Pomona is like one big family – everyone looks after each other and everyone is equal,” she said. “We always welcome visitors to come and relax, walk the laneways, enjoy the coffee and visit the antique stores.” Visitors to Pomona can also drop by the Noosa Museum at 29 Factory Street or phone the Noosa Council for more information: (07) 5329 6500.

NOOSA Today visited Pomona this week to ask locals what makes their town one of the friendliest in Queensland – plus some handy tips for visitors. Lifeline Pomona volunteer Claire Stephens has spent the past two years in Pomona and although she does not yet consider herself a local, she’s enjoying the country lifestyle. “I like the fact Pomona is quiet and peaceful with friendly people,” she said. “If you’re planning a visit definitely check out the silent movie theatre (The Majestic Theatre), it’s worth the visit – there’s also some amazing bushwalks and trails.” Pomona Newsagency owner Les Sloots is a well-known Pomona local and has lived in the town for the past 20 years. “I like the town’s culture and open-mindedness – Pomona has an inherent friendliness,” he said. “I’d suggest a visit to the lake, do the trail walks, or just walk the streets and say ’g’day’.”

Youths charged with Sunrise fire

Ready for perfect storms By JOLENE OGLE

The two boys have been charged with setting fire to crops and growing plants, standing trees, saplings or shrubs, and will be dealt with under the Youth Justice Act.

Border dispute heating up From page 1 CEO Brett de Chastell said the re-boundary application had progressed and the Minister for Local Government was now appointing a boundary commissioner. Cr Frank Pardon and Cr Bob Abbot said they appreciated the EDV Residents Groups’ submission and Cr Frank Wilkie congratulated the group on the merit of their proposal. Mayor Noel Playford said EDV had every right to want to join the Noosa shire, stating that EDV residents use Noosa’s facilities and that it was a logical proposal. Mayor Playford clarified that Noosa Council was not favouring the EDV and stressed the decision was for the Minister. “But should the re-boundary be

Mayor Playford also speculated that the current LNP government was focused on next year’s election and thought the LGAQ minister might be promoted or there might be a change of the ministerial role which could open up a new application for the EDV Residents Group. A unanimous vote was carried and included four specific recommendations including: “recognise that proposed boundary change issues should be initiated by the local community; note that there appears to be a significant overall community of interest between the EDV area and the Noosa Council; advise the EDV Residents Group Inc that Noosa Council would participate in any

IT’S TIME for Noosa to get ready as emergency service workers urge locals to be prepared for this severe weather season. Noosa Fire and Rescue Inspector and Area Commander Rob Frey said it’s important to be aware of the hazards the local community could face. “It’s evident with the out of control bushfire (in Sunrise Beach) - our bushfire season goes through and then, all of a sudden, we can be in a severe weather system,” he said. “It can be a bushfire one day and a day later it starts to rain and we can go from a severe bushfire emergency to a natural disaster storm emergency.” Member for Noosa Glen Elmes said the state government has been working hard to create storm safe initiatives to help locals be prepared. “In a place like Noosa, floods, fire and storm damage are all major issues we face as a community,” he said. “Where we have great support from local emergency services and council, the state government is making things available to each and every person to help in that personal evacuation plan.” The new initiatives include a yellow slap-band that features a USB stick, where personal and important information can be stored and taken with you in the event of an emergency. The USB bands are available from Mr Elmes’ office, Noosa Council office and the Tourism Noosa Visitor Centre on Hastings Street, Noosa Heads. The State Government has also created a household evacuation plan guide, available online at www.qld.gov.au.

New light on prostate cancer By JONATHON HOWARD

A GROUP of Queensland’s leading urologists met in Noosa recently to discuss prostate cancer treatment following shock statistics that prostate cancer deaths have doubled since 1998. About 3700 men are now being diagnosed with prostate cancer every year in Queensland alone. It is now estimated that around 120,000 Australian men are now living with the disease with numbers expected to rise dramatically in coming years. As part of an ongoing commitment by the medical community to improvements in treatment and care, last weekend saw the convergence

Expert view on prevention, treatment

Group in full voice for good cause

TO find out more about prostate cancer prevention and treatment, Noosa Today put the hard questions to Associate Professor Eric Chung during his visit to Noosa recently. What are the current remission success rates of post prostate cancer surgeries? Remission success rate depends on a lot of factors such as grade and stage of cancer, surgical outcomes (organ confined; margins clearance and subtype of prostate cancer), as well as response to and choice of primary vs subsequent treatments (additional radiation). Success rate of surgery can be defined as overall survival, cancer-specific survival or biochemical survival (based on postoperative PSA level). It is important for patients to have an open, frank and informed discussion with his doctor about his prostate cancer, and the benefits and risks of various treatment options. Over the last few years, there have been considerable advances made in terms of imaging technologies and treatment strategies. What can men do to reduce their chances of prostate cancer?

By JONATHON HOWARD A LOCAL Noosa group is raising money and awareness for a disease that touches the lives of many Alzheimer’s. Libby Day has made it her mission to make life easier for those living with Alzheimer’s with a special concert by the New World Rhythm Choir at The J on Friday 31 October. Ms Day strives to make things easier for patients and their families through her organisation Molly’s Song, named after her mother who suffers from the illness. During August, the organisation held its annual

Alexandra Hospital and University of Queensland said ensuring optimal approaches to treatment across Queensland’s health sector was imperative. “The meeting will investigate new advances in surgical options for prostate cancer patients as well as exploring the long-term outcomes of brachytherapy, new medicines and predictive tumour behaviour in patients,” he said. “With the burden of prostate cancer weighing heavily on the community, it’s crucial that the medical community is fully versed in contemporary approaches to treatment and continues to embrace advancements.”

Good cause concert at The J: The New World Rhythm Choir will perform on Friday 31 October. fund-raiser which saw local for people to come along and international acts per- and support our cause and enjoy the amazing sounds form on the Noosa River. Nothing much unless you can reverse ageing and change your genetics. But recent studies have shown that certain diets such as lycophene (bright red anti-oxidant foods) and isoflavones (soy), less animal fat, more fruits and vegies, and food rich in omega 3 (fish) may reduce your risk of developing prostate cancer. Furthermore, healthy diet, exercise and lifestyle and quitting smoking minimise risks of prostate cancer. The effect of certain classes of drugs such as 5-alpha reductase inhibitors in preventing or lowering the risk of prostate cancer remains controversial. Could you please explain why prostate cancer is becoming more prevalent in Australian men? Excluding skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer in Australian men, accounting for 30 per cent of cancer diagnosed and 13 per cent of cancer deaths according to PCFA data. Several proposed theories for the high prevalence include genetics, diets and increased screening and diagnostic detection of prostate cancer among the public.

The trek up was made possible by Noosa District State High School interact students who assisted the Rotary Club of Cooroy to clear the track leading up to the summit of Cooroy Mountain. The clearing was part of a one-off opportunity for the local community to access and climb the mountain and permission was granted by property owners Cooroy Mountain Water to enter the property on Cooroy Mountain Road and Duke Street. The mountain trail was believed to have been closed due to liability concerns from Cooroy Mountain Water who are

Cooroy Rotarian Carol Johnston described the views from the summit as “breathtaking. “To the west and south all

of the Glasshouse Mountains can be seen and to the east all of Rainbow Beach and Noosa is in plain view, Ms Johnston said “The views tower over Tinbeerwah and Mt Coolum to the south. A number of activities were planned at the base of the walk including helicopter flights, food stalls, free blood pressure checks, a 12 telescope with filters, available for punters to safely look at the surface of the sun, poetry recitals, buskers, bands and face painting. There was also a “Paint the Cooroy Mountain and a digital photography competition. All profits from the event will go to the Sunshine Butterflies Group in Noosa, who support people with mental or physical disabilities.

Fishing ban faces tight vote By JONATHON HOWARD THERE was a time, not so long ago, that beach anglers could cast a line from the shores of Teewah Beach and within minutes they were reeling in their first catch. But more recently locals and holiday makers have found it difficult to catch anything and commercial beach net fishing has been flagged as a contributing factor in the decline of fish stocks. The issue came to the attention of Noosa Council as an agenda piece, and the council is now likely to request that the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry cease commercial beach net fishing along Noosa North Shore, in a bid to allow fishery resources to renew. A final vote was expected to be carried during tonight’s ordinary meeting, where all final votes are cast. The request comes as the deadline for the Department of Fisheries review of commercial fishing expires at the end of October. But the council fell short of including an amendment to the fisheries submission, which referred to a request to investigate the long-term sustainability of Noosa River and Lakes systems. Mayor Noel Playford said he saw no issue with amending the current submission to the Department of Fisheries to include a sentence encouraging investigation into the sustainability of fish stocks in the Noosa River and Lakes. Cr Playford said the issue of overfishing across the Noosa shire had been close to being resolved in the early 1990s. “We had agreed then to stop commercial fishing, but the minister (at the time) reversed the decision,” he said. “I see this as an opportunity to include an additional request to investigate the sustainability of the Noosa River and Lakes.”

Noosa North Shore solo anglers could soon see a recovery of fish stocks following a landmark decision from Noosa Council – that’s awaiting a final vote tonight.

Cr Tony Wellington, who chaired the general committee meeting on Monday, also spoke in support of investigating the sustainability of Noosa River and Lakes, which he said were vital parts of the fish cycle and therefore warranted sustainability investigation. However, councillors Bob Abbot and Frank Pardon could not agree with councillors Playford and Wellington on the matter. Cr Abbot said the motion was only for Noosa North Shore and in his opinion the letter of submis-

sion to the Department of Fisheries should not include additional information about the Noosa River or Lakes systems. Cr Jurisevic agreed with Cr Abbot. “I have been down this road before of adding details at the last minute - it never ends well,” Cr Abbot said. “We have one recommendation before us and that’s to recommend ceasing of commercial fishing at Noosa North Shore, the letter and investigation from staff does not mention the Noosa River or Lakes and

I SPENT last weekend in the second best place in Australia on the Surf Coast in Victoria. My Grade 8 girlfriend from Maroochy high school was celebrating her 60th in a small restaurant in Aireys Inlet. I am sure most of us have a similar story, but it was terrific to catch up and still be friends for 47 years. I spent most of my time in Victoria’s holiday capital Lorne, and thoroughly enjoyed the driving along the Great Ocean Road. Lorne’s cafes, beach access, quaint village atmosphere reminded me of Noosa in the early ’80s. Oh and yes the cafe latte set were there as well, all looking a million dollars all hours of the day. I started to think how this area from Torquay, Anglesea, Aireys Inlet, Fairhaven and Lorne successfully work as one under the banner of Surf Coast. Tourism certainly leads the way, retail, but not that much else. There’s not too much development and certainly there were no cranes and I didn’t see many homes/units being built. And other than the main road, most roads were dirt stoney with the exception of a couple that had just been tarred. And of course most homes were built within the leafy treescape, that raised my concerns remembering back to the tragic Ash Wednesday 1983 when the entire area was levelled. Other then a few shops in the main town areas, I wondered where everyone worked, went

to school, or basically got a start in life. It’s a little like the push by the EDV Group which wants to do everything under the Noosa Council. Like most Surf Coast residents travelling to work in Geelong to meet the needs of living, Noosa residents travel daily south for work, school, uni, airport, medical, shopping, play sport, just to name a few. It seems the EDV push is starting to show cracks as the recent confrontation with rival Coast Alliance group outside Noosa Council Headquarters. Alliance Chiefs clearly suggest that “the EDV Group has no authority to speak for the general population of either the Sunshine Coast or the districts EDV’’, stating they are only a small organisation with a specific interest and is not supported by the broader Sunshine Coast Community. So basically, just like Surf Coast, the travelling daily out of Noosa for many reasons, clearly shows an imbalance that needs to be acknowledged. Most of the flash homes in Lorne, with the best views are all owned by people in Melbourne who drop in every now and then. Help a volunteer While I am on the subject of people, especially people who give their time freely in a volunteer capacity, I am sure most of you know plenty like 2013 Volunteer of the Year Cooroy’s Sue Stanley. Well it’s that time again to nominate someone you think deserves a pat on the back. Nomination forms can be found on the Sunshine Coast Sports Federation website. Or you can call Graeme Murphy 0423 454 830. The winner is to be announced at the Sport Star of the Year in January 2015. Until next time.

I cannot support Mayor Playford’s amendment.” Cr Pardon had been the driving force behind the Noosa North Shore commercial fishing ban recommendation, but he said he had made a promise to residents. “It makes me sad that I am not able to support the amendment to include a request for investigations into the sustainability of the Noosa River and Lakes,” he said. “However, I made a promise to several residents that I would not include the Noosa River and Lakes in

this submission and I intend to keep that promise.” The amendment was subsequently voted down by a vote of four against which included councillors Abbot, Pardon, Bolton and Jurisevic. The original submission recommending a cease of commercial net fishing at Noosa North Shore was carried with a unanimous vote. However, further information could come to light during the council’s final ordinary meeting tonight, Thursday 23 October.

LETTERS Hold out on hospital GRATEFUL thanks to Noosa Hospital’s Dr Niall and the wonderfully kind and competent nurses and radiographers of the emergency room. I recently presented with a fractured wrist, which at my age I could have done without, but as co-initiator of the hospital, I was reminded of its importance and value to us all. In particular, the ER offers a crucial service, but we also need obstetric beds as well as more private and public beds as a matter of some urgency to provide better infrastructure for our increased population. Noosa Hospital is built on 16 acres of land, which could accommodate another two pavilions of at least two storeys high, with underground parking that would eliminate present roadside parking, and which would ensure the hospital’s operation well into the future. The Noosa community fought hard and long to acquire dedicated public beds on the north coast, and we must insist Noosa Hospital remains a facility for all comers, and not just a private hospital for the insured. Liz Aspinall, Retired Hospital CEO, Noosa.

Wake-up call IT HAS been reported that the developer of the area called Caloundra South holds 2310 hectares of approved developable land across the southern Sunshine Coast with plans to seek progressive approvals for 20,000 lots, shopping areas and other items. This extensive development would take years to complete but 259 lots are already approved as are also 1050 lots for the additional developments nearby being Bellvista Centre (350) and Bells Reach (700). Research indicates that Eumundi, Verrierdale, Doonan and Weyba Downs residents total about two per cent of people living within the Sunshine Coast and that a majority are more aligned with Noosa’s standards and systems than with those of the south. Hopefully, consideration of an appropriate

boundary change to join with the Noosa Shire Council may go through to the Boundary Commissioner. The above data can be seen as a wake-up call. The significant infrastructure to progressively support the massive billion dollar proposed developments would be constant and probably continue for generations. Such costs must regularly impact on EDV resident’s rates payable to the SC Council, which are already significantly higher than the Noosa Shire Council rates. Also, the voting percentage of EDV residents will progressively drop to well below two per cent. A detailed analysis of the 2014-’15 budget, available on the web, shows that the Noosa Shire Council could comfortably and prudently absorb the EDV group residents and provide services as required well into the future. Breath of fresh air I HAVE enjoyed reading the articles from Joe Shlegeris, the Greens candidate for the state seat of Noosa. I have also enjoyed his radio talks on the local station. What a breath of fresh air this man is with his intelligence and factual knowledge exposing the government ‘misinformation’ we are fed on a daily basis. (What a change to see an intelligent, caring politician with evidence based facts!) Joe is a highly educated, experienced businessman who cares about the economy, small business, creating jobs and the environment. Joe has a vast knowledge of the electricity industry. He mentioned ‘the electricity tax and the fact that the state owns the generators, controls the ratesetting Queensland Competition Authority, and owns the profit on electricity sales. Everyone must pay. Citizens are forbidden to buy electricity elsewhere’. That’s a tax! This is a blatant LNP abuse of market power. The state forces citizens to pay a huge fixed charge plus 30 cents per kilowatt-hour. At the same time, the state acts to prevent people from installing their own solar gear to produce electricity at an all-in cost of 10 cents or less. If a company abused its power that way, the ACCC would be forced to act. ‘This abominable combination is entirely a creation of this LNP government. It’s bad economics, terrible environmental policy, and imposes a great big new tax increase on every household’. I agree with Joe in that we must get rid of this ‘big coal mining’ based LNP government. Joe mentions the fact that coal fired energy uses a huge amount of clean water in its generators and discards dirty contaminated waste water. Clean pure drinking water is used, not recycled water. The huge quantities used, even in drought times, could be put to better use for our agriculture (that is, food). Solar is a clean sustainable energy unlike coal fossil fuel that requires huge quantities of water, huge holes in the earth, pollutes our water, land and air and contributes massively to climate change with expensive, unsightly 18th century power stations and millions of expensive poles using a dirty, finite resource. Little wonder we are seeing first-hand the effect of climate change in Australia with some places experiencing October snow this year, whereas last year they battled October bushfires. Glen Elmes is part of and represents the LNP and their dreadful policies and must take responsibility for the high cost of our electricity in Noosa and the continued use of this outdated energy source. The rest of the world is moving forward to use sustainable clean solar and wind energy, but Glen Elmes and the party he represents is going backwards in both state and federal politics. What are you doing about it, Mr Elmes? He is paid handsomely to represent us in Noosa, so what is he doing to help us have cheap, clean, solar energy and stop the ever-increasing electricity bills. Mr Elmes, why don’t you and your LNP show us you care more about us than you do about keeping the coal mining and energy companies rich. Show you care about the environment and have Noosa totally sun powered with clean solar. If the average voter isn’t outraged with the current political situation, they haven’t been paying attention. It looks like we need a person like Joe to get us out of this dreadful mess. It’s time for a change in government, so we can move forward with intelligent people like Joe Shlegeris. Go Joe! Julie Andrews, Noosa.

Re-amalgamation NOOSA Council agenda 14 October 2014 supports the EDV Group’s proposal that the areas of Eumundi, Doonan and Verrierdale have their boundaries changed so they no longer be part of the Sunshine Coast Council and become part of the Noosa Council. Noosa demanded de-amalgamation from the Sunshine Coast Regional Council and now oddly supports re-amalgamation of parts of the Sunshine Coast Council to the Noosa Council. Will Noosa Council pay all the costs of this re-amalgamation including the costs of the Sunshine Coast Council? Noosa ratepayers already paid $2.3 million to the Sunshine Coast Regional Council to cover costs for de-amalgamation. The cash-strapped Noosa Council cannot financially afford this boundary change as the rates collected are less than the costs to maintain Eumundi, Doonan, and Verrierdale areas. Jeff Nuske, Noosa Heads.

Whodunnit? AS ONE of hundreds of people who worked hard to ensure that Noosa Council was deamalgamated - letterboxing hundreds of houses, donating money, attending meetings, writing letters - I was taken aback to see Glen Elmes citing the de-amalgamation of Noosa as his crowning achievement during his first term in office. Apart from the odd photo opportunity, what did he actually do to make this happen?

In fact Elmes’ compatriot, the LNP Minister for Local Government, David Crisafulli, actively worked against our de-amalgamation, by sending letters to all households in the Noosa Shire warning us of dire financial consequences should we choose to separate from the Sunshine Coast Council. The SCC took Noosa Shire’s $77 million, and has so far returned $24 million. We are claiming another $20 million which will put our shire well ahead after the costs of de-amalgamation have been paid. Has Glen Elmes fought to have that money returned? Did he object when the State Government and the SCC forced Noosa to take 50 more staff than they required? We had to pay $6.5 million in redundancy packages for them, considerably blowing out the cost of de-amalgamation. Even with this, the costs have been nowhere near Crisafulli’s scare tactics figures. Eighty per cent of the people in Eumundi, Verrierdale and Doonan surveyed, living inside Elmes’ electorate, also want to become a part of Noosa Shire. What has he done to ensure that the State Government accedes to their wishes? Nothing. Sadly, this claim is no more than a sad joke on the people of Noosa who did all the heavy lifting. Thanks Noel Playford, Tony Wellington, Jim Berado, Paul and Noela Summers, Ian and Joanne Wright, and Bob Ansett. They are the outstanding ones who fought tirelessly to get us our shire council back. Joy Ringrose, Pomona.

Century 21 in the pink CENTURY 21 Conolly Hay Group will turn its world-famous gold jackets pink for the month of October, in an effort to raise awareness and funds for the Cancer Council’s Pink Ribbon campaign. Staff will wear the limited edition pink jackets at auctions, open homes and out in the community during October. Cancer Council’s Pink Ribbon campaign

supports women affected by breast and gynaecological cancers and raises funds for vital cancer research, prevention programs and support services. According to the Cancer Council, one in eight Australian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Cancer Council Australia spokesperson Jane Hutchison said it was fantastic to

Century 21 Australia hopes to raise over $100,000 for the Cancer Council during the month of October.

Q& A

Property Management by Karen Seskis

Karen, Storm season is approaching how do we prepare? Julie.B, Tinbeerwah Julie, Preparation is so important and as we have seen in NSW over the last week Mother Nature can be unpredictable, here is a list published by Energex and it is important to follow this. Prepare early for the storm season by following this summer checklist to give your family and property the best chance of staying safe when severe weather hits. Before storm season - Trim overhanging tree branches. Do not attempt to trim trees near powerlines – if a tree is close to a powerline, call us on 13 12 53.

- Secure loose items such as outdoor furniture and umbrellas, garden debris, garden tools and outdoor toys.

Location and lifestyle

- Prepare a storm kit. ON OFFER is a lovely, light-filled property located in a quiet street in the heart of Noosa and close to the beautiful Noosa River. Recently renovated, this threebedroom home is ready for you to move in and enjoy. A covered patio is located at the side of the home and opens out to a gorgeous, fully-fenced garden inspired by the country; this is the perfect place to relax with a good cuppa and even better company. The main bedroom is located at the front of the home, with two more bedrooms down the hallway. Each features timber flooring and built-in storage.

- Charge laptops and mobile phones so you can check power outage information on our website.

The family room is a generous size and features access to the covered patio.

- Register for early severe weather warning alerts at Australian Early Warning Network, or for Brisbane residents, Brisbane City Council’s Early Warning Alert Service.

The kitchen has everything you need to easily cater for a family including a wall oven, generous pantry, and plenty of bench and storage space.

During a storm

This home is perfect for a couple looking to downsize and live in a peaceful location with an easy to maintain home, or a small family looking for an idyllic lifestyle close to all Noosa has to offer.

- If a power interruption occurs, turn off and unplug electrical items. - Listen to your local radio station, follow Energex on Facebook and Twitter or check the power outages page for the latest restoration updates.

This property also features ceiling fans, security screens, an electric garage entry and storage shed, plus parking for one vehicle.

- Use a torch for light if you’ve lost power and avoid using candles. - Never use wet or damp electrical items. After a storm - Stay away from fallen powerlines and alert people to any danger. - Report fallen powerlines on 13 19 62. - Report a loss of supply on 13 62 62 or to get the latest power restoration updates.

Style stacks up for design winners TWO local designers have taken out top awards at the National Association of Building Designers (NABD) inaugural National Building Design Awards. Noosa-based designer Gerard Smith Designs has won three awards for the already multiple award-winning build called River House. Located in Minyama, the house can now add National Building Design of the Year, Best Residential Interior Design and Best New Residential Design over $1 million to an already impressive list of awards. The home, which also won awards at the Master Builders 2014 Housing and Construction Awards, features open-plan living and dining, a kitchen with direct access to a scullery and bar, plus multiple indoor/outdoor living zones. Children have also been considered in the design of this home with a rumpus room on the lower-level of the home and a second play area on the upper-level. The main suite is the perfect parents' retreat with a generous ensuite, walk-in wardrobe, coffee and tea station and private balcony with long water views over the river. Chris Clout Design of Sunshine Beach also took out top honours for Best Alteration/ Addition Residential Design up to $350,000 for their build named The Cubby House, located at Sunshine Beach

The River House has also won the Best Residential Interior Design award. Also an award-winning home, The Cubby House was completed in 2012 and is described as an outdoor retreat with all of the luxuries, including high-quality finishes and a vibe reminiscent of a six-star resort. The main suite features a clear floor that overlooks the pool, plus an open-plan

ensuite with ‘see-through’ glass features on the walls to capture the tropical garden surrounds. The bungalow-style bar and poolroom below offers a tropical hideaway perfect for relaxing or enjoying a cocktail party with friends.

Other winners for the NABD awards include Maroochydore-based Brad Read Design Group who won Best New NonResidential Design up to $5 million for an office building design in Maroochydore.

Cops on a healthy mission

Hotshot: Andy Hammang will perform with the Sydney Hotshots at Club Cooroy on 29 November.

Sensational Hotshots CLUB Cooroy is bringing sexy back with the Sydney Hotshots performing next month in their Six-Pack Sensation Extravaganza show. Currently touring Australia, the boys from Sydney will turn up the heat with sensational costumes, dance routines and toned bodies. The audience will be taken to the wild, wild West and the fire house, with police on standby should things get out of control. Hotshots director Paul Reynolds said the key to the team’s success was the group’s attention to detail.

“The guys spend hours perfecting their moves, training to stay in shape and researching new ideas and songs,” he said. “I believe that it is this sort of ethic; the love for the show and the audience and the level of professionalism our guys bring to the show that makes the Sydney Hotshots so successful.” Sydney Hotshots dancer Dave Hughes, who has performed at Excalibur Casino, Las Vegas, said it was the audience that kept him dedicated to the gruelling requirements of touring.

“There is nothing more exciting than performing to an audience full of gorgeous Aussie women and seeing them have the time of their lives,” he said. “Mums and daughters, office workers, best friends, sisters – they all come together at the show.” The Sydney Hotshots will perform at Club Cooroy, 25 Maple Street, Cooroy, on 29 November, from 7.30pm. Tickets are available now at $28 per person. Phone Cooroy RSL on 5447 6131 for tickets.

NOOSA police are on a mission to get kids physically active through youth-focused programs and the hosting of the Noosa Blue Light dance parties. Our local boys in blue have teamed up with BCC Noosa Cinemas to host a special advance screening of “Let’s Be Cops” on Friday, 5 November, at 7pm. Ticket sales from the movie night will go towards engaging kids in active ways with the focus on fun through physical activity. The police are calling on residents to purchase tickets from BCC Noosa Cinemas or Noosa police station and show their support. Each year Noosa police develops ideas to get kids active as well as ways to encourage social engagement with their peers - away from the distractions of technology and social media. This year Noosa police Senior Constable and Blue Light co-ordinator Darryn Parkes said community support was urgently needed and greatly appreciated. Businesses are also being encouraged to put up lucky-

door prizes for the movie night. “We’re looking for a local business to come on board with a monthly sponsorship package,” he said. “Businesses will have the chance to present their logos on the big screen during the Blue Light dance parties and have their business name presented on any promotional material for the Blue Light.” The film fund-raiser, Let’s Be Cops, is a comedy starring Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr, scheduled for release next month. The film features two struggling friends who decide to dress as police officers for a costume party and become neighbourhood sensations. But when these newly minted "heroes" get tangled in a real life web of mobsters and dirty detectives, they must put their fake badges on the line. To find out more about getting involved with assisting the local youth, or sponsorship packages, email Sen Const Darryn Parkes at: Parkes.DaryynR@police.qld. gov.au or phone Noosa police.

There’s craft in their art A NEW artisan gallery is set to open in Peregian Beach and will showcase local and national handmade arts. The new gallery, Coastal Artisans, is the work of three local artists – Brenda Marshall from Tree Tomato, Melissa McFarlane from Charlie Mac Designs and Elke Lucas from Elke Lucas Ceramics. The gallery will also include works by Wool and Cotton Road, Deadwood Creative, Julie Hanrahan, Nature Art Jewellery and many more artisan creations. Founder Brenda said Coastal Artisans is a gallery to showcase “art with heart”. “What we love is art and craft presented in a peaceful space with a minimal aesthetic and what we love even more is art with lots of heart thrown into it,” she said. The official opening is on 7 November from 4pm, and will be held at the gallery at shop 5b, 12 Grebe Street, Peregian Beach. For more information, email info@ coastalartisans.com.au.

Surf is as nasty as it gets Life of

brine PHIL JARRATT

MORE than 40 years ago I spent an autumn season free-camping on the beach at Peniche in Portugal, only a few hundred metres north of what is now called Supertubos, where the battle for surfing’s professional world title played out this week, so I know only too well the impact it can have on your psyche when the skies go leaden and the wind howls onshore. It’s not the fault of the pleasant fishing port of Peniche, rather that its swell magnet position jutting out into the Atlantic creates extremes in weather, and when it gets nasty, it really gets nasty. Until the Moche Rip Curl Pro resumed last Sunday, the world’s best surfers had had almost a week of atrocious conditions. Back in my day when this happened, we’d forget about surfing and head for the soccer game at Madame Sirly’s quaint little bar at the southern end of the port, where we’d play world cup marathons against the local fishermen and pig out on grilled sardines and slug down cheap rose out of a plastic bottle. These days when it gets nasty the surfers go slab-hunting at mysterious rock ledge breaks that we didn’t even know existed, looking for the biggest, ugliest, thickest monster waves they can find. That’s what happened last week when big wave tour commissioner Peter Mel took John-John Florence out on a windswept 15-foot day at a break called Popua. Although Brazil’s Gabriel Medina, not J-Flo, is the young gun on the brink of this year’s world title (the first ever for Brazil), it is Florence from Hawaii who is widely regarded as the best surfer in the world right now, so even though he only made a few big drops at Popua, the session was all over social media and the websites within hours.

www.noosacinemas.com.au Thursday 23rd Oct to Wednesday 29th Oct 2014 CHICKS AT THE FLICKS PRESENTS: THE BEST OF ME (M) SPECIAL EVENT / NO FREE TICKETS WED: 7.00PM Pre show entertainment starts at 6.30pm with stalls, raffles and lucky door prizes. All tickets just $25.00 which includes a CATF gift bag. Booking are essential!

Kelly Slater and John-John Florence go hard on some waves of consequence in France last month. Pictures: ASP The very next day, no doubt having taken note of all the fuss, John-John’s mentor, Kelly Slater, 22 years his senior and the oldest guy on tour by a country mile, paddled out at Supertubos on another ugly, onshore day, the water the colour of mud, and punted a massive aerial manoeuvre that broke new ground for rotations. Some people were calling it a 720 degree air (Kelly himself claimed it a 810) but when cooler heads analysed the video coverage it was agreed that it was probably a 540 degree, or one and a half rotation air. Still a first for the 11-times world champion who was sitting at number two in the world at the time, with an outside chance of claiming another world title. Always the most ferocious competitor, Slater used his post-punt interview to chuck one up his young rival. “The waves are great for airs,” he said. “So where’s John-John? Why isn’t he out there? What’s he doing? Sitting at home editing videos of himself?” Ouch. The champ signed

off chuckling, knowing he’d put it out there that his era was not quite over just yet. The kids have got time on their side. He’s not going to make it easy for him. Sponsors wanted The Noosa Festival of Surfing 2015, presented by Cricks Noosa, is taking shape as one of the best ever, with major sponsors like Cricks, Jeep, PJ Burns, VetShopAustralia, Golden Breed and Classic Malibu already signed, along with huge support from Tourism Noosa and Tourism and Events Queensland, and the Southern Oscillation tracker starting to indicate a good season for Coral Sea swells. But we still have several high profile events without sponsors, and with more than four months to run pre-event, this represents a great opportunity for cost-effective marketing right through the summer. If you’re thinking about getting involved in the world’s biggest surfing event (with more than 500 entries from more than a dozen countries), don’t delay. Give me a

It was a packed house at Zachary’s Pizza in Peregian last week when Annie’s Books hosted the local launch of my book, Bali Heaven and Hell. I was thrilled to have two of my biggest supporters, grandsons Jack and Beau, in the audience. Neither of them have read the book, but they loved the movie. Picture: SAM SMITH

Healthy angle to gardening SLOW Food Noosa invites you to join them for an insightful and informative session with Cath Manuel from Soil to Supper, at Outrigger Little Hastings Street on Thursday, 30 October. Cath is an experienced horticulturist, organic gardener, horticultural therapist, consultant and educator. Her life’s mission is to educate and inspire everyone, locally and globally, to care for themselves and the earth and grow healthy fresh food to enjoy and share with others. Cath has many years’ experience in the gardening and horticulture industry and has a great passion for growing fresh, organic food and sharing it with her family and friends. “It can be hard to have a constant supply of home-grown food in your garden when many plants are grown seasonally,” Cath said.

“In many studies, people with low energy, low self-esteem, negative thoughts and other forms of mental illness have shown great improvements from spending up to an hour a day in the garden. “Gardening calms nerves, reduces blood pressure, reduces stress and decreases stress hormone, cortisol and many doctors are prescribing gardening and other outdoor activities to help patients overcome depression as time spent gardening can reduce the need for prescription drugs.” Cath conducts the ‘Sowing Serenity’ social and therapeutic horticulture program at NoosaCare Carramar within the dementia unit and

“Caring for the soil, using crop rotation and plant staggering can all assist with creating a year-round supply of fresh food in gardens of any size and I look forward to sharing some tricks of the trade.” Cath is focused and zealous about living a sustainable and healthy lifestyle and helps others to improve their wellbeing through growing healthy organic food and connecting with the earth. As a keen gardener, Cath knows the value of spending time connecting to the earth, planting seedlings and harvesting fresh food. “For many people facing the pressures of daily living, studies have shown that time spent in the garden greatly lessens stress and improves health and well-being,” Cath said.

Cath Manuel will present at the next Slow Food Noosa breakfast on 30 October.

community centre, sponsored by Slow Food Noosa and supported by Tewantin Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank. “Social and therapeutic horticulture is a process of using plants and garden-related activities to promote well-being of people’s minds, body and spirit,” she said. Make the most of your outdoor living zones with Accolade Weather Screens.

Turn the outdoor into the indoor with PVC cafe blinds that look like glass.

Screens to boost outdoors DO YOU have an outdoor area that is continually being battered by wind and rain? Most home owners are restricted to how much usage they can get out of their outdoor area, whether it is a patio, decking, pergola or outdoor alfresco area. Accolade Weather Screens has being offering customers weather proofing solutions for their outdoor areas for over 10 years through their innovate alternative to PVC Cafe Blinds. An Accolade Weather Screen sys-

tem is a series of aluminium frames inserted with a clear weather resistant PVC material, which has the optical clarity of glass and the added benefits of being lightweight and safe. Unlike your traditional PVC Cafe Blinds, there is no need to roll a blind up and down, which causes creasing and warping in the PVC. By using a series of weather resistant screens, enclosing your outdoor area from wind and rain has never been easier, no more winding up and down like old cafe blinds.

Accolade has designed their system for the harsh Australian climate in mind. The unique tracking and locking system ensures that there is no flapping around in high winds. The system has revolutionised outdoor living, allowing customers to enjoy their outdoor area all-year round without spoiling the view. The screens give the effect of being a permanent structure, however, can bi-fold, stacker slide or open like French doors allowing you to maintain an open outdoor environment.

Accolade Weather Screens owner Julian Menzel said most of their customers could not believe they use PVC within the screens, as most are convinced it’s glass. “Most customers are convinced it’s glass,” Mr Menzel said. The experienced and friendly team offer step by step advice when choosing an outdoor solution that is right for you. One on one consultation allows you to custom design your outdoors, taking into account your personal preferences.

All products are offered in a variety of colours and inserts including clear and tinted PVC as well as sun block out and insect proof membranes. “Customers wanted to use their outdoor area all year round, we listened and we provided an innovative solution,” Mr Menzel said. To see more about Accolade Weather Screens visit the galleries and videos at www.accoladescreens. com.au or contact them on (07) 3102 1186.

Gearing up for triathlon

Fun run with pink touch ENTRIES are now open for the Noosa Breakfast Fun Run in aid of the National Breast Cancer Foundation. The fun run is perfect for people of all abilities with many participants running, walking or event skipping the 5km course. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to come dressed in pink to help raise awareness and funds

for breast cancer support and research. Also supported by the Zonta Noosa club, the entry fee includes breakfast in Noosa Woods after the run and lots of random draw prizes. The 5km Fun Run is on 31 October, leaving from the Festival Village, Noosa Woods, Hastings Street, Noosa. To register, visit www.ironman.com.

Everyone is encouraged to dress in pink for the 5km event.

Last year's Noosa Fun Run was a great success.

IT'S clear that the Noosa Triathlon is upon us as more and more runners and cyclists take to the Noosa streets, and more people dive in for an early morning ocean swim. The five-day event is one of the largest triathlon events and multi-sport festivals in the southern hemisphere and organisers expect thousands of competitors and spectators to flock to the Noosa region for the event. Since the first Noosa Tri in 1983, with only 180 competitors, optional helmets, banned wetsuits and lost cyclists, the Noosa Tri, is now a first-class international event. Running from 29 October to 2 November, the event features five days packed with events and entertainment, with the main event, the Noosa Triathlon, on the final day. The Endura Run Swim Run event starts the festival on Wednesday, with the Noosa Tri Charity Golf Day on the Thursday. The Tour de Noosa cycle and breakfast with the stars is on Friday, along with the fun run, sport and lifestyle expo, Arena Noosa 1000 Ocean Swim, and fireworks to mark the first full day of events. The event heats up on Saturday with the Coasts Hire Superkidz triathlon, followed by the Tingirana special triathlon, Noosa legends tri, Asics 5km run and the men and women’s Subaru Australian Open Criterium. The Subaru Noosa Triathlon will be held on the Sunday, with the Noosa Heads Surf Club hosting the after party, from 6pm. For the full event line-up and for all road closure details, visit www.noosatri. com.

I got back on the bike two weeks ago,” he said. But Damien isn’t a stranger to the Noosa Tri, competing in team events once before and twice as an individual competitor. THIS October, the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) is asking Australians to go pink and help fund vital breast cancer research. With the support of its corporate partners, NBCF has a range of beauty and lifestyle products available, with each product contributing to breast cancer research and the foundation’s goal of zero deaths from breast cancer by 2030. With breast cancer affecting a staggering one in eight women in their lifetime, it’s likely that you know someone who is, or will be, affected by this disease. NBCF believes the most effective way to improve the prevention, detection and treatment of breast cancer is through research. “By buying a pink product this October, you are raising funds for breast cancer research that could one day help your mother, grandmother, daughter, sister or friend”, said Carole Renouf, CEO of the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Pink Ribbon Day, a campaign from the Cancer Council, is on 27 October and helps shine the spotlight on breast and gynaecological cancer. You can show your support by purchasing and wearing a pink ribbon on Pink Ribbon Day, 27 October.

Buoyed up by generous donation from surf club THE Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club (NYRC) can better help disadvantaged and Indigenous youths, thanks to a generous donation by the Noosa Heads Surf Club. Last week, Noosa Heads Surf Club donated $2000 and first aid equipment to the NYRC Buoyed Up Program as part of the community partnership program. The NYRC Buoyed Up Program allows disadvantaged and Indigenous students to enjoy a five-day sailing camp as part of a personal development program. Noosa Heads SLSC spokesperson Ian Young said the club was proud of the long-term relationship with NYRC and said the club was excited to be able to help with the NYRC youth initiatives. The funds and first aid equipment will help the NYRC programs continue to help more kids learn to sail over the coming year and also help with the Buoyed Up Program.

NYRC sailing manager Paul Blundell with Noosa Heads SLSC Nipper and youth-sail sailor Lucia Neely and Noosa Heads Surf Club's Ian Young.

The night pennant series got off to a good start for our club last Thursday with a hard-fought win over Pacific Paradise. Scoring in the men's and ladies pairs and the mixed fours, Noosa took six of the available nine points from the encounter. This week we play at Tewantin. Last Tuesday’s pairs comp was won by Alan Teale and John Brock, with second prize going to Neville Graham and Ron Wallish. Wednesday was ladies triples with the winners Debbie Austin, Jeanette Emery and Gill Macdonald. The old combo of Terry O’Neill and Niven Gugich scored in the Friday Open Jackpot Pairs, with Andrew McCall and Bob Heir runners-up. Triples winners on Saturday were John-Paul Sengers, Sophie Gale and David Nimmo. While, in the pairs section, the winners were Steve Bowie and Stewart Black, who also won the jackpot prize. In club championships, the ladies Consistency final is scheduled to be decided this Wednesday, and the first round of the Open Singles is set down for Saturday.

Hill climb spills, thrills THE Historic Noosa Hill Climb is back for two days of heartstopping, action-packed racing at Gyndier Drive, Tewantin. Now in its 17th year, the Noosa Hill Climb is a premier event that runs over two days on 8 and 9 November, with racing set to run from 8am until 4pm. Event organiser Noel St John Wood said the event was now recognised nationally as a premier hill climb event. “With recent improvements to the circuit and pit area, this year’s event will be bigger than ever before,” he said. Regarded as one of Australia’s premier hill climb courses, the weekend is set to be loaded with

thrills and spills as exotic cars race to the top. Spectators can catch the action trackside with numerous spectator areas set aside, plus food, drink and a bar available. For the rev-head, access to the pit area and finish line where you can chat with the drivers, provide a unique experience. Tickets to the event are available at the gate at $15 for a day and $20 for a weekend ticket. Children under 14 are free. Parking is available at the Tewantin Sports grounds over both days, with a shuttle bus available to ferry event-goers to the entrance.

Many types of cars compete in the Historic Noosa Hill Climb, including this blue 1932 Triumph Special driven by the oldest competing driver, John Anderson, aged 76.

twice about casting along those shallow areas near Makepeace and Sheep Island. Up between the lakes the area of rough ground just before Johns Landing has been producing some nice Jacks with live baits and deep diving lures the best approach. North Shore has again been firing, tailor have still been making their presence felt with some great fish over the 2kg mark taken. The southern beaches are also seeing the tailor with some nice catches coming from Marcus and Perigan beaches. On behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures.

HOW things can change in a week, with the wind picking up the offshore scene was a little slower, still the diehards made their way out and were rewarded for their efforts, those that made it to North Reef caught nice pan-sized snapper, Maori cod, cobia and dolphin fish. A little closer in Halls and Sunshine Reefs also produced some great snapper and sweetlip. The bay has fished well with tuna and bonito hitting the bait schools. On the river, the mouth has been the place

to be, tailor have been feeding on the incoming schools of bait early in the morning, flathead have also been on the chew and have been taking small pilchards and soft plastics. A little further up river there have been some great elbow slapper whiting around the dog beach and the frying pan. The Gympie Terrace stretch of the river has also produced nice whiting as well as bream and trevally around Munna Point. Upriver the first ski run has been good for flathead on the last of the run out tide, the shallow bank is where these ambush predators lay in wait for a passing morsel of food, so don’t think

TWO weeks of fine weather has seen the softball season off to a great start with Redsox, Dodgers, Slammers and Slamcats all putting in teams. Games start at 8.30am in the morning and the senior hardball comp finishes about 4.30pm. Players from three years old to 50 plus are out there playing, so one is never too old or young to play. Visit the Noosa District Softball Association Facebook page to see all the latest photos and results of the young and old playing. Fred has been loading them every week. As for the games I have seen, Riley and Kyle have hit home runs, Jack Murray has taken a screamer of a catch while Riley and Kyle also have catches to their name, and Jarrod has put on the best comedy act as a catcher of which I heard all as I was umpiring. Over the past months leading up the club has had state titles with Lewis, Leigh, Shinai and Charles all making different Qld teams. Luke Thomas has again been selected this time in the U23 side to go with his U17 and U19 selections. So if you feel you have it in you, come on down on Saturday and join in the mixed competition and enjoy a day with Noosa softball.

Starting out on the knees participants were finding their feet.

Halfway good health mark By JONATHON HOWARD THE Jetts Noosa 12-Week Weight Loss Journey continued to test the limits of participants with a special paddle boarding session on the Noosa River recently. Participants are approaching the half way point of the 12-week weight loss journey and they are beginning to drop the kilos. The participants were put through their paces with exercises both on and off the board - courtesy of local business Noosa Stand Up Paddle. Among the participants storming ahead with their weight loss goals is 60-year-old Bob Cox. Bob is a retired police officer who spent 10 years on the beat in Noosa and before that in Mount Isa. The towering six-foot-four Bob said he was eager to drop about 20 kilos with his starting weight at 126.6kg. “I’ve put on weight and lost weight my whole life,” he said. “I’m really undertaking the 12-week weight loss journey to improve my health and reduce back pain.” Bob has already dropped more than eight kilos and he’s embraced the weekly challenges with zest. “I’m mainly doing this for myself and I’m aspiring to lose about 20 kilos,” he said. Noosa Today will be revealing the starting weights and current weights of the eight competitors in the coming weeks. Health, fitness and fun are at the heart of the Nippers program.

Under 7 Nippers.

Improving the retention rate IT HAS often been said that the showcase of the Australian Surf Life Saving movement is their beach patrols, or as they are now called, the Red and Yellow Army. So be it. However, there is now another component in our showcase. The Nippers. On any Sunday at our beaches Peregian, Sunshine and Noosa, you will see the beach patrols. Then further along next to the flag area could be anything from 200 plus little Nippers ranging from five years through to 11 or 12. Hopefully, it is from these numbers that our future patrol captains, club captains and in some cases even our club presidents will emerge. Some years ago our National Council, the governing body of Surf Life Saving Australia, became con-

Between the

cerned when it was revealed that despite the time and effort put into the nipper movement only a staggering 2 per cent was going up into the senior clubs. Our big hope of the Nippers becoming the breeding grounds of our senior clubs was not working. These facts were revealed at a national conference in Sydney several years ago, and those of us who held the rank of club president were told in no uncertain terms, “Go home, look at what you are doing and think again. This 2 per cent retention rate is definitely not acceptable.”

Happy to report the majority took it on board and now with a change in attitude, new programs and more parent involvement, the retention rate is definitely on the rise. Without realising what was happening, a lot of clubs have started to put into practice what our Queensland Advisor for Junior Activities, Ray Fein calls the 3F Factor; Fun, Friends and Family. The first F is being achieved by placing more emphasis on fun games and less on competition. The second F is friends. This factor is supervised by the age managers and water safety officers who encourage the Nippers to look out for their mates. It is in this area that a lot of parents become more involved by being trained as water safety officers. The third F is

family. With the ever present mums and dads on the beach, helping as water safety officers or cooking at the barbecue, the Nippers have definitely become a family affair and happy to relate many a new friendship is started. At Noosa it is interesting to note at the start of each season, the numbers that are new arrivals in our towns. With their involvement, it helps not only the children but also the parents to settle in and make new friends. Once Nippers are old enough to move into the senior club, a happy atmosphere is vital in making these young people want to stay on and start their journey towards their SRC and Bronze Medallion awards. It is during this time that the ever

green group known as the Masters, play a major role, for it is these members who with their years of experience in both beach patrolling and competition come to the forefront. There is nothing like having friendly and happy masters with whom they can share a joke or turn to for help when it comes to learning the trade of lifesaving. Therefore, it is absolutely necessary that the senior management concentrate on not only retaining our Nippers, but also those lovely old ladies and gents, the Masters. With it still being impossible to push a trolley through Coles and buy $50 worth of experience, friendship between Masters and junior members is of the utmost importance. This is the key to consolidating the future of Life Saving Australia.

Front foot surfers a breed apart - on the nose! WAY back at the turn of the century (remember the Y2K bug scare) the fledgling Noosa Festival of Surfing got together with a reincarnated iconic surf brand called Golden Breed and chucked around a few ideas for creating a new event. Actually, the idea that resulted from Golden Breed’s Nick Van De Merwe sitting down with the Festival’s Phil Jarratt over a few beers one day, was also a re-incarnation of sorts. The first ever specific nose-riding contest was the invention of design guru Tom Morey

back in 1965, using a taped line across the front of the board that both feet had to be in front of before the timer was clicked on. A point for every second clocked while hanging five, doubled for tens. Held in perfect First Point peelers, the inaugural Golden Breed Noserider was a huge hit, with surfers clocking 20-plus second noserides that Tom Morey’s competitors would have only dreamed of. Over the years, the event helped nurture a culture of noseriding in Noosa, with locals

like Jai Lee, Josh Constable, Harrison Roach, Matt Cuddihy and Zye Norris developing into the world’s best tip riders, alongside standout internationals like Christian Wach and Joel Tudor. Like the event that bears its name, Golden Breed has come a long way in the 15 years since canny rag trader and surfer Nick Van De Merwe rescued it from the junk pile of forgotten surf brands. Originally created by industry guru Duke Boyd in the 1960s, Golden Breed has got its

mojo back big time, with subtly retro surfwear and accessories reflecting the brand’s surf philosophy of “ride ’em all”, and flagship stores in key locations such as Byron Bay and Noosa. In 2015, the Golden Breed Noserider will share top billing at the Noosa Festival of Surfing, presented by Cricks Noosa, with more prize-money on offer and a galaxy of tip-time superstars expected to compete. Entries for this great event will open on 1 November at noosafestivalofsurfing.com.
