line survey, community stakeholder meetings and a phone survey run, officially closed on Friday 24 October. Yarra Ranges Council Mayor Fiona McAllister said that the results of the consultation would be compiled and presented to councillors for further action in the next few weeks. “The process at the moment has been getting feedback from as many people as possible and meeting with as diverse a range of groups as possible, she said. “What’s happening is we’re suddenly in a position where summer is approaching, and there is an understandable level of interest in knowing the future of the pool, because, if it’s going to be reopened, it would be ideal to have it open for summer. Cr McAllister urged for community members to keep discussing the matter respectfully after the council posted an update on 13 October, describing some residents attacking council officers on social media. “I know that it’s frustrating for community groups, how long these processes take - I can empathise with that, Cr McAllister said, referencing discussions on the future of Healesville’s Indoor Pool earlier this year. “The sense of urgency has greatly increased and this is an emotional issue pools always are - and it’s fine for people to be strong and to have strong opinions and to be very emotional, but when it starts to become about individuals rather than the issue, it’s not ideal. Members of the public are able to address the council for up to five minutes, as part of the council’s submissions from the public item in each meeting. Tonight’s council meeting will begin at 7pm at the Yarra Ranges Council Chambers at 15 Anderson Street, Lilydale. Outdoor pools in the Yarra Ranges open from November to March, with hours varying between facilities.

TWO children are set to make an appeal to save Olinda Pool tonight (Tuesday), just two days before the start of the council’s swimming season. Faith Everard (16) and Sofia Mikulcic (10) will make a public submission as councillors consider the pool’s future at the Yarra Ranges Council meeting. The pair aim to talk about the significance of the pool to local kids and teenagers, as a spot to catch up, hang out and relax during the summer months. “We’d like to let the councillors know just how much the Olinda Pool means to this mountain, and to this community, and that we would appreciate it if they could restore it so we could swim in it again, Faith said. The pool was declared closed until further notice in November 2013 when extensive cracks and damage to the pool’s shell were identified by the council. The community reacted passionately against the closure and lambasted the council for not taking swift action. An engineer’s report was not presented to the council for more than four months. The Save the Olinda Pool group formed with the goal of getting the pool open for the 2014-2015 summer season. “We’re fighting really hard to open it because it means so much to us, Faith said. “I’m hoping I can help them to understand why we want the pool open and that there are so many people behind this. Residents campaigning for the pool’s reinstatement have posted on social media to try to get as many supporters as possible to the meeting. “It would be nice if the community could show support and be proud to show their faces and put their name to this campaign, Faith said. The council’s community consultation on the Olinda Pool, which included an on-

Pavilion in pipeline By MELISSA MEEHAN MONBULK Recreation Reserve’s ageing pavilion will be replaced regardless of who wins the upcoming State Election. Last week Monbulk MP James Merlino said a Andrews Labor Government would build a new community pavilion at the reserve. The reserve currently caters for more than 800 players from local cricket, netball and footy clubs as well as school kids and families at Monbulk Primary School and other
local community groups. The $600,000 promise will also provide new meeting rooms and male and female changerooms. Mr Merlino said the works would help the local clubs and groups grow. “Monbulk has a very proud sporting history and the recreation reserve is part of an impressive sport and community precinct,” Mr Merlino said. “But the facilities don’t match the quality and excellence of the
volunteers or the hundreds of players.” Earlier this month, Liberal candidate for Monbulk Mark Verschuur promised $500,000 if the Coalition Government wins the elections. Monbulk Recreation Reserve Committee president Paul Utting said news of the promise was fantastic. “Now we can plan with confidence,” he said. “We know that we are getting a minimum of $500,000 which is great.”
Mr Utting said that the committee was working closely with the council on concept plans, and said the promised funding meant there was now pressure on council to bring the project to the front of the list. “Over the next few weeks, we should have an idea from council about an agreed plan and budget, so we can work out what else we need in terms of fund-raising,” he said. “We’re very excited about the whole project.”

ACROSS the road from Tecoma McDonald’s last week, a group of campaigners were celebrating a special milestone. Belgrave Wizard and iconic hills resident Baba Desi celebrated his 85th birthday last Wednesday in the same way that he has spent many of his days in the past year: protesting the Tecoma McDonald’s. The group brought cake, nonalcoholic wine and decorations to commemorate the milestone, while Desi stayed focused on the task at hand. He says that the Tecoma restaurant could best serve the community in other ways. “The building could be used as
an arts centre for young people in the area. We have plenty of sporting facilities, but it would be useful to have an arts centre out here.” Six months after the opening of the McDonald’s, the protesters maintain a presence on most days and still generate much support from drivers who beep their horns while driving past. Lemons line the side of the road to represent a community who will not support the new establishment. With 85 years under his belt, the big birthday will not stop Desi from continuing to support the No McDonald’s campaign and join the protesters across from the restaurant. “It’s out of place and it doesn’t belong. It needs to go.”

FUNDING promised to Chandler Recreation Reserve is not part of funding the Cardinia Shire Council would normally receive from the State Government, despite rumours claiming it is. Some councillors believed that an election promise by Brad Battin of $650,000 towards facility upgrades was part of capital works funding made available to the council each year. But Cardinia Shire Council Team
Leader for Recreation and Facilities, Heather Callahan, said the funding was an election commitment and not funding usually provided to the council. “Chandler Reserve pavilion and social club rooms form council’s Victorian Government election priority works list and have been and will be discussed with candidates for Gembrook,” Ms Callahan said. Mr Battin said the election promise was new money and not attached to funding usually received by council.
“The council approaches all parties approaching any election and put forward a list of priorities to be funded,” Mr Battin said. “I received various drafts of the document dating back to 1 October 2012 and on each edition, Chandler Reserve was listed.” The Federal Government, through La Trobe MP Jason Wood, has already committed $500,000. “I have spoken to council, and Cr Brett Owen who appeared to support the funding,” Mr Battin said.
“It would be a shame if other local councillors did not support the upgrade of Chandler Reserve. Emerald Football Club deserve the upgrade they have waited many years for. “Chandler Reserve is a priority for the government due to the current condition of the facilities they have, and due to council campaigning on this since October 2012. “The council requested funding in 2010, just prior to the last election.”

Gaping hole AS the parent of a student with disabilities at Emerald Secondary College, I was pleased to see a call for funding of a purpose-built integration facility. Emerald Secondary College has highly-skilled integration staff, committed to meeting the needs of many students with disabilities. The gaping hole in the equation is a building for them. My son and many students need withdrawal space at times for learning, space for lockers
and computers, and need quiet areas to meet their sensory needs. The schoolyard can be a social minefield for these students and they often need a calm place to go at break times. When I have asked politicians about this they routinely refer to the new Autism School in Ferntree Gully or the new Special School in Officer (both built for at least 10 times the cost of what a suitable building at Emerald Secondary would cost). These responses are smoke and mirrors hiding the fact that even if students could travel to
these schools, many of Emerald’s students are ineligible due to their IQ scores or zoning restrictions. So Mr Battin and Mr Ross - will either of you commit to a purpose-built integration facility at Emerald Secondary College ready for 2016? OR will you make populist promises at the expense of society’s most vulnerable? Catriona Knothe, Emerald.

Hectic fire season ahead By MELISSA MEEHAN
333 or drop in to one of the Yarra Ranges municipal offices. Information on registering burns can be made through the CFA at: http://www.cfa. vic.gov.au/plan-prepare/burning-off/, or by calling ESTA on 1800 668 511. For information on fire warnings and other relevant fire information, visit the CFA website at: http://www.cfa. vic.gov.au/. For all fire emergencies, call triple-zero.
LOW rainfall and predicted hotterthan-average temperatures over the coming months means a busier bushfire season for local firefighters. Recent warm and windy days have already caused concern for Monbulk CFA crews who have attended a few out-of-control open air burns. Monbulk Fire Brigade member Mike Rosenfield said that those fires were a timely reminder of how quickly a relatively controllable situation could escalate on days of higher temperatures and wind. “It really shows how soon the active fire season will be upon us,” Mr Rosenfield said. Depending on council zoning of properties, residents may be allowed to open air burn for fuel reduction in the Yarra Ranges. But Mr Rosenfield said residents should call or visit the shire’s website
for up- -to-date information. “Residents must also be aware that the CFA declares the Fire Danger Period to each municipality and no open air burning is allowed without a permit issued by the CFA during this time,” he said. Fires are not the only occurrences that the members of Monbulk CFA attend. As one of a few CFA ropes rescue units, members have been called to attend several incidents including fires,
car accidents and mountain rescues. “With the fire season approaching, there's no better time to plan ahead by clearing fire hazards within properties with diligence, car and consideration for local CFA crews who are regularly called to attend uncontrolled open air burns. For more detailed information on the regulations for open air burning on your property, visit the Yarra Ranges website at: http://www.yarraranges. vic.gov.au, call the shire on 1300 368
RESIDENTS are not permitted to open air burn in urban areas however, in rural and residential bushland zones, residents must follow the local legal requirements of: · No open air burning for fuel-reduction purposes on Sundays · No open air burning when the wind speed is more than 15km/hour · Supervising fires at all times · Having adequate water close by and · Keeping fires to 1 cubic metre in size on smaller properties
New course charted for golf rejuvenation By MELISSA MEEHAN DWINDLING membership numbers meant the future of the Emerald Golf Course was bleak, but it’s about to get a new lease of life, and hopefully, members will keep coming. BSF Golf Management led by Brian Hall and Bryan Harper recently took over the management of the golf course and have plans to get
it into shape. “We’ve been in the golf business and operating golf courses for over 25 years,” Mr Hall said. “And we believe that our experience and ability to rejuvenate the Emerald Golf Course will bring back members of the community, whether they be members or day visitors.” BSF Golf Management also manages a number of
other golf courses across Melbourne including Wattle Park in Surrey Hills and Studley Park in Kew. Mr Hall said that works had already started on the golf course, and once that was finished they would start work on the venue and pro shop. “The quality of golf course surfaces means more enjoyment for our members and visitors,” he said.

Fair report plea heard by council By KATH GANNAWAY ACCOUNTABILITY for inaccurate reports to council was raised as an issue when Yarra Ranges Council addressed meeting procedures last week. Council was considering releasing for community consultation a Local Law Review on Meeting Procedures and the Use of the Common Seal. Yarra Glen resident Christine Dove addressed the councillors on the issue of fair and open decision making. “What obligation of accountability is there once a report (to a council meeting) is proven to be incorrect,” she said. Asked by mayor Fiona McAllister what she thought might be included to reflect the need for accountability and transparency, Ms Dove said the public should have more time to consider reports in agendas before the matter goes before council. “One week is not enough for people to review the information and then if something is wrong, to address that,” she said. “I have noted the concern of councillors and also heard from submitters of mis-informatin and inaccuracies in officer reports,” she said. Cr Witlox moved that the draft document go out for community consultation. He said he understood the need to get reports done to keep matters moving, but added “they should be accurate”. “We can announce community consultation and I think feedback from Mrs Dove can be included, and it should be,” he said. Community consultation will take place from 22 October to 19 November with the findings and submissions considered at the 9 December council meeting.

Opinion Unbelievable bargains
THE proposed site for the government revamped TAFE on the site of the previous Ford car yard must be considered as hopeless, inappropriate and totally inadequate. The building are mostly tin sheds with little thermal installation and would be freezing in winter and as hot as hell in the summer. There is totally inadequate parking opportunities and any future students would be forced to use the Olive Trees shopping centre car park or the Market Shopping centre car park, causing much anguish with shoppers and traders, plus the council would have to approve the proposal's new change of use. Now for the new Box Hill TAFE CEO to say that he selected the new site and was not influenced by the government, needs to be taken with a grain of salt. The previous TAFE site is a world-class asset worth tens of million of dollars as a education and community facility. This rush to close technical/TAFE colleges is similar to the Kennett era madness to close schools throughout the state - and where did that get us, nowhere. Bruce Johnson, Monbulk.
What's in a name? REGARDING the article on page 3 (Mail, 21 October), I completely agree with Kevin Teasdale on this matter. To dedicate the name to one person loses the connection to all the other people and activities that were also important contributors to our history. I support the name Forge Lane because it is different to every other town with a lane called “Blacksmith Lane”. It has a great connection to the past, plus acknowledges the relationships and history that is still being forged today. Non Blair, Emerald.
Sounds of silence POOR Jimmy Merlino - I almost pity his lack of commonsense. Jimmy has with some justification figuratively thrown his size five slippers and the kitchen sink at the Victorian Liberal Party over its alleged porn ring.
Send your letters to: editor@yvnews.com.au Unfortunately at the same time Jimmy has sat back and remained silent over the worst case of documented and proven paedophile clergy in the history of the world. It's the world’s most disgraced religion. I want to hear little Jimmy publicly blast the abhorrent actions of the church over decades. How many innocent children have died or had their lives destroyed due to the disgraceful actions of clergy within the church? Sean Gothe, Belgrave.
Name to notice WHAT’S in a name? Yes, it could forge the way of the future and remember the past. The naming of the now covered laneway in Emerald, between the bakery and the clothing store is of significant importance, in that we remember all those that came before us. I favour the name proposed by long-time resident, Kevin Teasdale who was also born in Emerald, for the laneway of Forge Lane. By not naming the laneway, Stapleton Lane as suggested by Peter Segman, it gives recognition to the fact that the blacksmith, namely Charles Stapleton, had his business here but does not discount the family of Kevin Teasdale, who owned and operated businesses on the lane as well. I think it would be of added interest to locals and visitors to Emerald, if photos from the past and present were a feature of the laneway. Ann Hughes, Macclesfield.
Shot in the foot THE Grattan Institute paper (The Age, 18 October) suggests that Victoria can expect 350,000 new primary aged schoolchildren between 2011and 2031. How can any government close an important TAFE College at Lilydale when there is going to be a tidal wave of new schoolkids wanting higher education in the next 20 years. Talk about the Liberals shooting themselves in the foot. Bruce Johnson, Monbulk.

years (14 October) as a newsworthy story surely breaches advertorial guidelines (all adverts must be declared as such) because, in reality, it was a free advertisement. There is nothing newsworthy about the sale of an ordinary house which is not historic, controversial or important in the community and whose owners are not celebrities. Adding insult to injury was the mention of the “potential for developers” because the agent also has listed two adjoining blocks of land. Based on the Network Classifieds price guide, it should have cost ‘Thomas and Anna’ $230.50. The 223 words could have been better utilised on something that is actually newsworthy. Vanessa Mullin, Upwey.
Temporary trap MY TWO daughters go to Emerald Secondary College and both are in the Accelerated Learning (SEAL) program. As well as this, through other programs such as VCAL, I know that the school is also committed to meeting the needs of students with disabilities, with very few resources. I recently picked up a friend’s son from the integration unit at the school and was shocked to see the size and the condition of the portable which is supposed to accommodate over 50 students with disabilities as well as staff. Having worked in the disability field I know the importance of learning spaces to meet special needs. I also know that with the right opportunities, these young people can achieve great things. It’s election time soon - the time for promises. Surely our local politicians can commit to a new facility for these young people. It would be money well spent. That’s where I would like my taxes spent. Pilar Nesvara, Gembrook.
Troubled minds WENDY Lawrence from Cockatoo last week rhetorically asked what proportion of her rates go to the salaries of the people putting her peace of mind in jeopardy. Ms Lawrence would be better advised to make them earn their money by objecting to her valuation. It costs a ratepayer nothing to object.
If Ms Lawrence has good grounds, and a shire valuation of $35,000 more than a sold price actually obtained within a few months of that valuation seems a pretty good argument, objecting is a cost-free way of her getting about $125 back this year and again next year. A couple of years ago I objected to Yarra Ranges and a valuer came to the house, did an on-site valuation and dropped the valuation about $50,000. This represented about $180 to me that year, and carried forward to the next year so that’s $360. It also reduced the fire services levy by a small amount. Despite shires generally saying they don’t use current assessments in setting new rates, my valuation this year is exactly the re-assessed valuation from two years ago. Hmmm, could be a coincidence, but I suspect that I’m $180 better off this year and again next year as my current valuation is coming from a lower base. Councils by and large contract out valuation tasks and select the valuer on least cost, as they should, but these valuations are basically done at a desk or drive-by. When you object, the shire, at its own expense of about $300 or more, does a boots-in-your-hallway valuation by a sworn valuer which is far more accurate. So by doing an incorrect valuation initially the shire cost itself about $1000 over four years. It may be in the interest of the councillors to have high valuations as they can then say ‘what good people we are, keeping the set rate in the dollar to a minimum’ as the overvalued properties prop up the total income. Nor does it hurt upper echelon executive salaries to be administering a richer shire. I suggest to everyone that if you feel your valuation is high you do some research and if you have grounds, put in an official objection. Take advantage of the constant letterbox offers by real estate agents. If enough people do it, it becomes a factor in the shires getting it right initially. If only 50 in 1000 object successfully throughout Cardinia and Yarra Ranges, that is about a $2.5 million lost revenue wake-up call to the two shires to get their valuations right in the first place. Yarra Ranges cut-off day for objections was 24 October, Cardinia is 31 October. John Nieman, Monbulk.

Tiny bugs cause mighty damage By MELISSA MEEHAN THEY might be tiny, but these little bugs pack a huge punch. Elm-leaf beetles have been found across the Yarra Ranges, including towns like The Patch and Healesville. Concerned about the large number of the beetles seen around their house and the local hall, The Patch residents contacted the Mail last week. “Last year, we noticed all these little bugs inside and wondered what they were, so we did some Googling and found them to be these elm-leaf beetles,” he said. “It was an infestation of the area, and we’ve noticed that they are back again.” Yellow and dark brown adult beetles are evident from mid-October and create a series of small holes in leaves during October and November. Beetle larvae, also yellow and dark brown, then destroy all but the veins of leaves, creating a ‘skeleton’ effect. The larvae descend the trunk during December and are visible on the ground below the tree. Yarra Ranges Council’s director of Environment and Engineering Mark Varmalis said that, while the beetles did not kill trees immediately, they could disfigure and debilitate the tree through consuming leaves. “There may be up to three life-cycles of the beetle in a single season, depending on weather conditions,” Mr Varmalis said. He said that, with significant elm tree stands in Healesville, Warburton and Lilydale, the council had formed a con-

Animals in the vicinity By MELISSA MEEHAN Elm-leaf beetles are only tiny, especially when compared to a five cent piece. But they cause serious damage. Picture: MELISSA MEEHAN trol program for infested trees, but only for significant public areas. “Council does not have sufficient resources to treat every elm tree on public land, so treatment is limited to those trees of landscape or historic significance,” Mr Varmalis said. The council uses micro-stem injections to treat infested trees, which interrupt the beetle’s lifecycle and can be effective for up to three years. The resident said that he had already noticed a number of trees in The Patch showing signs of elm-leaf beetles, with many leaves looking like skeletons. He called for the Yarra Ranges Coun-
cil to put in place measures similar to that of the Mornington Peninsula, where large signage informs drivers they were entering an area where the beetles were present. “What many people don’t know is that these beetles can hitch hike a ride on cars from other areas,” he said. “It’s already hit The Patch, and Healesville - so other towns might be affected too.” Mr Varmalis said anyone wanting to treat elm-leaf beetles on their own land can contact Friends of the Elms on 0409 870 860 or by emailing foteinc@hotmail.com.
IT all started with a simple mathematical equation. Students at The Patch Primary School measured the dimensions of the school property as part of a project to explore the wetlands in and around the school. But their inquisitive minds wouldn’t let it stop there. They wondered who, what, why, when and where local wildlife called home in and around the school grounds. Teacher Michelle Rayner said the students then wanted to document all the animals that called the school home, and researched when and where they were. “We were lucky that Charlie’s
dad Stephen stepped in as a guest speaker to the kids as he knows a lot about filming and photographing wildlife,” she said. “He mentioned how local technology made it easier to monitor wildlife and see what happens.” So the students got to work, using their literary skills to write to wildlife technology companies asking them to donate cameras and other toys that would help them monitor the area. “It was great, we had a really good response and ended up with seven monitoring cameras and two pairs of binoculars valued at $2500,” she said. “Now we are able to monitor who uses nesting boxes all across the school at all times of the day.”

Station security beef up By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM PROTECTIVE Services Officers will be a permanent fixture at Tecoma Station. The PSOs will be present at the station from 6pm-2am daily and will maintain a presence on the platforms and around the carparks. There will always be at least two officers on duty.
Sergeant Mick Hall of Belgrave police station said that the roll-out would improve public safety at the station. “Although Tecoma’s not the busiest station, it will make a huge difference for passengers getting on and off the train especially late at night. “They will be there to make sure everyone’s doing the right thing and
that nobody is in danger.” PSOs patrolling Tecoma will start their shift at Boronia police station where they will receive a briefing from their supervising Sergeant outlining any notable safety concerns or events in the area. During their shift, PSOs maintain a visible presence during peak hour train services and engage with
the community. They proactively patrol the train platform, car parks and surrounds to counter anti-social behaviour, property damage, alcohol and other transport-related offences as they arise. “Even at a quiet station, it will be really beneficial to have them patrolling,” Sgt Hall said.
Students going nuts over fruits By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM FRESH Fruit Friday has become a highlight of the week at Belgrave South Primary School, thanks to the work of three local mums. Sarah Van Doorn strongly supported the government initiative to provide fresh fruit for primary school children and was disappointed when funding to the program was cut two years ago. With the help of local trader, “The Groovy Fruit Shop,” Sarah and two other mums began hosting community markets to raise funds to keep the program alive. “It’s really important that kids have access to fresh fruit, particularly when they’re at school. “As well as allowing us to buy the fruit for the program, the market is a great community event that brings people together.” On 16 November, the group will host their fourth market, this time with a Christmas theme. The market will feature fresh food including produce and bread, homemade delights such as soap, coffee, environmentally friendly products and, of course, Christmas

With the proceeds from the market, the mums buy fresh, seasonal fruit from The Groovy Fruit Shop, cut it up and distribute it to kids of all ages at the school. The regular
fruits include apples, oranges, bananas and strawberries. “Their eyes light up when we bring in the plates of fruit. It’s a great program and we’d like to keep it going as long as possible.”
Markets are held on the third Sunday of each month. For more information or to book a stall visit www.facebook.com/BelgraveSouthPrimarySchoolMarket or email bspsmarket@gmail.com.
Road plan input sought By KATH GANNAWAY YARRA Ranges ratepayers will have an opportunity to make submissions on a revised Road Management Plan presented to council last week. Yarra Ranges Council endorsed the Draft Road Management Plan 2014 and directed that a copy of the plan be made available to the public at Community Links and on the council website. Some of the key issues identified as part of the review were updating information based on current policies, revision of the current inspection system and addition of appropriate information on defects, intervention levels, and associated response times with a view to enabling greater transparency in reporting to the community. In moving the motion, Cr Jason Callanan said the review highlighted areas for refinement to bring the plan up to date with current policies and procedures. “It’s tweaking to ensure we are current,” he said. Mayor Fiona McAllister however said much of the feedback in submissions that informed the plan were about transparency. She said the message from the community was around the performance standards required of contractors and how they measured up. “This is something as a council we should be more focused on and talking about commercial in confidence, so we don’t go down that path, I don’t think is an excuse in itself,” she said. “I think we do need to be more transparent and that we should find ways to report more on these critical areas,” she said. The submission period is 28 days from the date the notice is published in the Government Gazette. A further report is set to go to council for consideration.

Retiring time for our Ray IF you live in Monbulk, you’re bound to have encountered Ray Yates in one way or another. Maybe your kids went to Monbulk Primary School, where Ray worked as a teacher for 10 years and then principal for the past 28. You possibly came across Ray during his time as a councillor or mayor of the Shire of Lillydale, or maybe you know him through his long association with the Monbulk RSL. In whatever way you know Ray, you’re sure to agree that his contribution to the Monbulk community has been nothing short of incredible. Without Ray’s involvement and commitment, the community would not have many of the services and opportunities available to them today, including the establishment of Japara Community House, ongoing support for the Kilsyth Youth Club, expanded facilities for Senior Citizens, support for pre-school committees and assistance to sporting clubs. Ray’s service to the community
has been recognised on many occasions before. In 1994, the former Shire of Lillydale Council conferred on Ray the distinction of Honorary Freeman of the Shire of Lillydale. This is the highest honour that councillors can bestow, and Ray is one of five people in the history of the municipality to receive this honour. His dedication was again commended in 2007 when he was the recipient of the Shire of Yarra Ranges Citizen of the Year award. On Sunday 7 December, the community will again pay tribute to the work of Ray Yates at his retirement function. After many years and working with thousands of students at the primary school, Ray retired from his position as principal in April. A retirement function will be held at Monbulk Primary School from 1-5pm and everyone is invited to attend. The cost will be $10 and those planning on going will need to R.S.V.P. to Sandy Meyers at meyers. sandy@edumail.vic.gov.au

Last Drinks with Cash at Lounge By CAITLIN McARTHUR BELGRAVE’S Sooki Lounge has been announced as one of the stops on Cash Savage and the Last Drink’s select tour. The band, who describe their stylings as hypnotic country blues, have hit the spotlight in the last year with a hit LP and multiple radio show acclamations. Set to perform on 1 November, Cash Savage and the Last Drinks have played in Belgrave once before and enjoyed the venue so much that they had to return. “It’s far enough away the people of Belgrave won’t travel into the city for shows. We need to get out to the people, we’re excited to be coming back,” the band’s Cash Savage said. The band has been playing together for “three to four years” and fluctuates between four and seven people. “The Belgrave show will feature a fourpiece, it’s the first time we’ve played with just four people in a while, it’ll be a little bit of fun,” Ms Savage said. Cash Savage and the Last Drinks announced their tour as their first time in WA and coupled it with three shows in Victoria. “We try to mix it up a bit for the shows, each one has a different line-up,” Ms Savage said. The concerts will feature a mix of their old and new stuff as they try out some of their new songs on the audience. Ms Savage said it could be a bit nerve-wracking trying out songs on an audience for the first time, but she “really enjoyed the reaction”. “Writing is coming along great ... I feel like I’ve written some of the best songs of my life for this album and some of the others are crackers too, if I do say so myself,” she said. The band already has three-quarters of their next album written. “We’re pretty happy with the songs so far, we’re not recording until next year and by then, I think we’ll be well and truly ready”, Ms Savage said. The tour comes on the back of the unexpected success of their last LP The Hypnotiser which received an EG Award Song of the Year nomination. The album also featured prominently in Top 10 Albums of 2013 lists and was included as one of the Top 25 Highly Recommended albums on the Coopers AMP Music Prize list. “It’s really humbling to get a reaction like that ... I don’t think we were entirely ready for the response that we got,” Ms Savage said. The Hypnotiser’s title track sat on the AIRIT Great Southern Chart’s Top 10 for weeks before reaching number one on the Now Charts. The band kicked off 2014 with appearances at the Adelaide Fringe Festival, Kyneton Music Festivals, Dark MOFO, Darwin Festival and the Deni Blues and Roots Festival. More information, dates and tickets for the Belgrave show are available at http://www.sookilounge.com.au/
By MELISSA MEEHAN FANCY a night out, with all the classic Aussie rock tunes not too far from home? Rock Berry Jam is back again in 2015 with headline acts including Jon Stevens, Daryl Braithwaite, The Black Sorrows, Ross Wilson, Jason Singh, The Flaming Moes and Where’s Joss. It’s a pretty fabulous line up and tickets are now on sale and starting to move. At just $70, to see seven acts - that works out to $10 for each act on Saturday 21 March. Organiser Lisa Glassborrow said the 18+ event starts at 2pm and runs until 11pm. “We really wanted to bring an affordable event to the local area,” she said. “It’s a day where everyone can come and enjoy a great day of traditional Aussie rock and sing-along to all the classics.” It’s the second year the event has run, the first ran in 2013 as a fund-raiser for the Silvan Football Club to get some lights, so their players could train at night. “It’s not for the footy club as such, more about off-field activities,” she said. “But at the end of the day, it’s an event for the community.” For more information, go to www.rockberryjam.com. au. Diversity captured on community’s calendar By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM A CALENDAR featuring the work of local photographers was launched at the Upwey Branch of the Dandenong Ranges Community Bank last week. Now in its sixth year, the bank holds an annual competition for locals to submit photos, capturing the beauty and diversity of the Dandenongs. The 13 winning entries will be featured in the 2015 calendar which was launched on Monday 20 October. Bank chairman Peter Marke said the board was very pleased with the amount of interest that the competition generated each year and particularly with the increased interest from younger photographers.
“This is the sixth competition that we have run and the calendars have proven extremely popular. “They will again be given to our customers and shareholders and, of course, anyone opening a new account at any of our branches: Upwey, Belgrave, Cockatoo/Gembrook and Olinda.” The board awarded encouragement prizes to three junior entrants whose pictures did not make it to the calendar but will feature on the bank’s in-house slideshow and Facebook page. Mr Marke said that the bank aimed to encourage the work of the community. “We are pleased to provide opportunities for local photographers to participate and showcase their skills in a way that promotes our scenic district,” he said.

Sport is on track By GEORGIA WESTGARTH WEEK four of the Yarra Ranges Athletics summer season provided perfect trackside conditions. Round three of the AV shield was held on Saturday 25 October with a big turnout from senior athletes. A small team of athletes competed at the Box Hill relays on Sunday 26 October. “All athletes competed exceptionally well and the team is now looking forward to the region relays in the coming weeks”, Yarra Ranges Athletics’ Jamie Strudley said.
Age no handicap By DENNIS FULLER
“It was great to see fellow athletes and parents supporting everyone in each event they participated in. “The athletes certainly enjoyed the support with many PB’s and fine performance through the day,” Mr Strudley said. All athletes at Yarra Ranges Athletics have access to coaching from the club's highly-qualified coaches. Contact the Yarra Ranges Athletics club at www.yarrarangesathletAiden Pace, centre, at round three of the AV Shield. 129721 ics.org.au.
Best kind of result for expectant coach WHEN Mount Lilydale Old Collegians Soccer team took to the field for the final of the FA Cup earlier this month, it was an exciting game in more ways than one. Healesville resident and head coach Paul Psathas’ wife Amie went into labour during the game and their son Ari was born a few hours later. Due to give birth in 12 days,
Paul’s wife Amie went to Olympic Park in Rosebud to watch him coach the Old Collegians senior team in the final of the FA Cup. At half time, Paul got word that his son was on the way and after delivering instructions for the rest of the game he left the team in the hands of his assistant coach. “It all happened pretty quickly, we just had to get in the car and go.
“I told the assistant coach not to tell the boys about anything that was going on until after the game.” After being told by The Angliss and Box Hill Hospital that there were no beds available, Paul took Amie to Monash Medical centre where after a seven-hour labour, Ari was born. Ari is Paul and Amie’s second
child, a brother to Paige who has just turned two. Paul has been on paternity leave since Ari’s arrival. And the soccer final? Unfortunately they lost, however nothing could ruin the day for Paul. “They got up at the presentation and announced that we’d gone to hospital. “It’s been such an exciting time.”
BROC Reynolds has done it again at the Emerald Golf Club, winning the stableford event with 42 points, following his triumph as club champion. A young man on the way to a single-figure handicap if I am any judge of horse flesh. This gave him the over-all win and also the bragging rights over the rest of the A Graders. The handicapper is becoming a little more than slightly interested in his generous handicap. B Grade saw Allan Ecclestone continue his brilliant form, coming in with 41 points to eclipse Ian Scott on a countback. Peter Clowes and Graham White both came in with 38 points to head up the rest of the field. Greg Horrocks was nearest the pin on the 4th, Reynolds on the 7th, John Fisher the 12th, Barry Cook the 13th and Eccle-
stone rounded out his effort to win the pro pin on the 18th. Wednesday’s Opulently Foppish Golf (OFG) saw a second win in two weeks for Ian Scott (24) when he led in the field with 40 points from Leigh Morison (13) on 37 while Ben Balfour(19) and John Piggott(22) both came in with 36. Early in the year, members played for the foursomes championship, both off the stick score and the handicap. Pairings of Ken Hill and Con Whitlock drew with Dennis Fuller and Ban Balfour when both teams came in with 81. The play-off happened last Saturday with Fuller and Balfour coming out as narrow winners with neither team scoring nearly as well as they did in the initial encounter. Next Saturday, member’s face off for the November VGL Medal.

McKenzie’s a bail buster By STEVE BROWN FTGDCA SCOTT McKenzie was the talk of the town after the completion of round three of the Reeves Shield. The tall opening bowler and skipper of the Knoxfield Knights tore through the Ferntree Gully batting line-up dismissing the Blues for just 119. McKenzie finished with the impressive figures of 7/47 from 23 overs, which included 11 maidens and the first six wickets to fall. Chasing 244 at the Wally Tew Oval, Ferntree Gully was unable to muster a partnership and was dismissed after 45 overs, with opener Josh Henry the only contribution with 67. At Eildon Park, the home team was defending 231 and had to hold off a gallant Knox Gardens who got within four runs in the closest contest of the round. Gregory was the best performer with the bat for the Falcons with 61 as Panthers bowlers Brown and Snyman combined well to hold off the visitors with three wickets apiece. The Basin has won three on the trot, resuming at 0/19 in response to Monbulk’s 160. Danny “RS” Rundle batting at first wicket down scored his first century of the season unbeaten on 102 as the Bears reached the target in the 64th over. Talented sportsman Jake Best gave good support with 32 not out, locking out any hope of a Monbulk win. Johnson Park (167) didn’t have enough runs on the board in its clash with Belgrave at Fair Park Reserve. Belgrave was well on top early before Feaver Medallist Ben Stallworthy grabbed three quick wickets prior to the tea break as the Magpies slumped to 5/126 with opener Johnathon Levell still at the crease.
After the break, Levell was joined by dashing hitter Aaron Daniel (43) as the pair added 58 for the fifth wicket. Levell batted for 72 patient overs giving his team a win by four wickets. At stumps, a modest Levell played down his role. “That was an ugly innings but I’m just rapt that we got the win.” In the final game, Upper Gully successfully chased Upwey Tecoma’s 134 for the loss of five wickets. Former Camberwell Magpies batsman Patrick McKenna (39) and Tom Roleff (38) saw the Kings safely home. Three players from the FTGDCA will trial next Sunday for the Victorian Country XI in a match at Seymour in central Victoria. Ben Stallworthy 28 (Johnson Park), Trent Atkinson 22 (South Belgrave) and Cameron Wheeler 19 (Mountain Gate) are hoping to make the state squad for the Australian Country Championships held in Bendigo (Jan 4-13). REEVES SHIELD Belgrave 6/172 (Levell 59 not out, Daniel 43, Stallworthy 3/45) d Johnson Park 167 (Gaunt 68, Carnell 4/24, Levell 3/59). Croquet club kicks off 120th season LILYDALE Croquet Club celebrated the start of their 120th season in the Yarra Valley this month. The club is the second oldest in Victoria and the only one to have played continuously at the same site since its foundation. Some 27 people attended the event, 13 of whom were members of other clubs of the Eastern Metro Croquet Association. Secretary of the club, Patrick Hartley said the representatives from all six of the clubs in the EMCA turned out in support. “We were very well supported,” Mr Hartley said. The club kicked off the season with the help of MPs Christine Fyffe and Tony Smith. Deputy Mayor of the Shire of Yarra Ranges Maria McCarthy and the president of the Victorian Croquet Association, Mike Cohn were also in attendance. Club president Renate Hartley welcomed everyone to the event before inviting the local dignitaries to ‘run the first hoop’ to mark the official opening of the season. “Running the first hoop, hitting the ball through the first hoop, is a traditional way of declaring the season open,” Mr Hartley said. “The club has provided exercise, recreation, friendship and fun for 120 years and we hope to continue to do so well into the future,” Ms Hartley said. Formed in 1984, at its largest the croquet club had a membership of around 30 people. Today it numbers just 13. “We’re a small club, one court and a small clubhouse,” Ms Hartley said. Despite its size the club has a strong history within the community. As a part of the celebration members put together some copies of the historical documents covering its founding and history. “The collage emphasised the occasion, it really was quite interesting to see the history of the club, Lilydale and the surrounds,” Mr Hartley said. The day also involved a quick raising of the flag ceremony, a game of croquet and lunch at the Harvest Cafe.
