Record cruise trade bypassing Geelong By EMILY IANNELLO
TOP VENUES IN AWARDS GLORY P9
GEELONG is missing out on Victoria’s busiest cruise season. Eighty-five cruises will visit but only three will tie up in Geelong amid an absence of waterfront berthing facilities. Up to 23 of the ships were capable of visiting Geelong if it had “the right infrastructure”, according to the city’s tourism boss.
Tourism Greater Geelong and the Bellarine executive director Roger Grant said cruise ship captains preferred docking at piers rather than swing moorings, which are used in Geelong so water taxis can ferry visitors ashore. “Many people struggle to get in and off the boat’s swing mooring,” he said. Mr Grant identified cruises
as the tourism industry’s fastestgrowing sector. “It’s an area that’s going to grow. The cruise ships are looking for different ports, they don’t want to follow the same route. “If we could deliver the appropriate infrastructure we could reap the benefits. We’re missing out because we can’t provide the needs of the cruise ship companies.”
Mr Grant said cruise companies and passengers were “very positive” about Geelong but wanted to step off the ship “into the heart of the city”. The region’s councils alliance body, G21, has identified building a Yarra Street Pier for visiting ships as a priority project. Cruise and navy ships previously berthed at historic Cunningham Pier until it became unavailable to them.
Studies suggest the proposed Yarra Street Pier could be worth millions of dollars annually to the region’s economy. The project would require funding from state and federal governments. City of Greater Geelong chief executive officer Gillian Miles said the next step was making the pier proposal “market-ready”. Continued page 2

MEMBERS of a Barwon region Special Olympics team have all claimed medals at a national games held in Melbourne. The 14 athletes won at least one medal each, with several winning multiple topthree podium places. The team combined grabbed eight
gold, 17 silver and 11 bronze in aquatics, athletics, basketball, gymnastics, tennis and 10-pin bowling. Coach Sylvia Simpson said the gymnastics team delivered a particularly “surprising” performance to claim a swag of medals. “The special Olympics are only held
every four years, so it’s not that easy to get into,” Ms Simpson said. “The gymnastics was held across three different levels in various age groups. Our youngest team member is 10 and our oldest is 35. “It was a real surprise but so great to see them rewarded for their intensive training.”

ONE of the region’s oldest footy clubs is battling with, of all things, the prosperity of its home town. Lorne Football Club, established in 1896, has been struggling to maintain a committee in recent years. It’s understandable given the effect of coastal Lorne’s sky-high property prices on the permanent population. Even the local traders struggle for staff who can afford to live in town. Luckily a reasonable crowd turned out for the club’s annual general meeting last weekend to fill various positions. But more help is needed, with the club urging members to join sub-committees to be formed in the next few weeks. “It takes a community to build a club,” said the Dolphins in a statement. Hopefully what’s left of the community hears the call.

HE might be on the nose with some of Geelong’s self-appointed gatekeepers but two events this week demonstrated the popular appeal of colourful Mayor Darryn Lyons. First he swanned in late to Monday night’s Gold-
en Plate Awards only to be swarmed at any break in proceedings by guests seeking selfies with the mayor. Next day brought a very different crowd but a similar reception when Lara schoolkids clapped and cheered widly as he visited with bright mohawk and ‘Giddy-ups’ aplenty. Mangle council procedures? Sometimes. Infuritate the old-guard? Usually. Amuse the masses? Always. NEWTOWN’S Robert Costa is a class act. Fresh from a successful campaign to secure funding for the next stage of redeveloping Geelong Performing Arts Centre, the multi-millionaire businessman and GPAC trust director wasn’t about to forget anyone who helped. His gracious and generous acknowledgements even extended to personally writing to the Indy, among others, with thanks for its “wonderful support”. Such a change to the usual tone of letters from Geelong’s elite! Robert Costa, take a bow.

“This will entail further data analysis, detailed design and ongoing market assessment,” she said. State Government said the Australian cruise industry was growing 20 per cent a year. One million Australians would cruise annually by 2016, the Government said. Other cities are also benefiting from the surge, with Sydney expecting a record 290-plus cruises this season. A Cruise Down Under study said cruises contributed $3.16 billion to the Australian economy in 2013/2014. Geelong’s season will host Seabourn Odyssey, which can carry over 450 passengers, on 20 January and 21 February. The Marina, with a capacity of more than 1200, will arrive on 15 February. Geelong council tourism portfolio holder Ron Nelson said many of the passengers would be American. “The benefit of having these visitors here is huge,” he said.
Federal MPs’ bad week By Paul Millar and John Van Klaveren

IT WAS a case of ‘Cup that!’ for federal MP Sarah Henderson in parliament this week as Corio counterpart Richard Marles apparently strayed off party course on refugee policy. Ms Henderson, the Liberals’ MP for Corangamite, was left with a sour taste in her mouth when she was reported for bringing a takeaway coffee into parliament. “It is not permitted to bring food or drinks into the chamber. Only water, which is provided, is permitted,” Speaker Brownyn Bishop told her party colleague. Ms Henderson was in trouble with the deputy speaker a day earlier for impugning” her predecessor in Corangamite, Labor’s Darren Cheeseman, who was visiting parliament the same day. Ms Henderson had attempted to use Mr Cheeseman as an example of why parliamentary entitlements should be reduced. She stressed that MPs were “duty-bound” to observe high standards of integrity, honesty and transparency.
SPOKEN TO: Sarah Henderson.

“I digress for one moment, noting that the former member for Corangamite was in the house today,” she told parliament. “It reminded me of the failure of the former member for Corangamite to serve with integrity when he ran a very dishonest campaign in relation to a particular…” Acting deputy speaker Rob Mitchell cut Ms Henderson off, asking her to withdraw the remarks. “Those imputations are not acceptable,” Mr Mitchell said. “The standing orders clearly say that you cannot

impugn a member or claim that his motives are improper, and that is what you have just done.” Ms Henderson protested several times before “reluctantly” agreeing to Mr Mitchell’s order. “It is unfortunate that you have made that ruling, Mr acting deputy speaker, but, in light of the fact that you have, I will withdraw it.” Ms Henderon said the Government’s proposed entitlement changes “sent a very clear message that any mistakes, oversights or, unfortunately, abuses, as has been alleged in the past, by members of parliament with respect to travel claims, will not be tolerated. “Australians do not like any suggestion that politicians have their snout in the trough.” Mr Marles, the opposition’s Member for Corio and immigration spokesman, was in hot water with some MPs and commentators for suggesting Labor could adopt the Abbott Government’s policy of turning back refugees on boats. But a day later he was quoted saying “our position hasn’t changed”. Labor leader Bill Shorten was forced to defend Mr Marles when asked whether the Corio MP had “gone rogue”.

Coalition targets seats with $65m in funding By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN THE NAPTHINE Government has flooded Geelong with $65 million in election promises in the past two weeks as it targets local seats with four weeks of campaigning left until the state election. The coalition announcements were aimed particularly at boosting the prospects of Paula Kontelj, contesting the Labor-held seat of Geelong. Long-serving MP Ian Trezise will retire at the election, with Christine Couzens standing in his stead. The Government made funding promises of $40 million last week for Geelong Performing Arts Centre, Bellarine Secondary College, Jan Juc Surf Life Saving Club, a kindergarten and tourism promotions. Premier Denis Napthine splashed more cash this week, with $10 million for a ManuFuture Geelong Initiative to create more than 400 jobs. Mr Napthine said ManuFuture Geelong would be established at Deakin University’s Geelong Technology Precinct as part of a $30 million manufacturing innovation hub. He also pledged $7 million for a Geelong-based injury and disability insurance centre to train 1000 tertiary and TAFE students. The specialised training centre
Jan Juc to ‘retain’ reserve WHILE the Napthine Government was been throwing money at Geelong, Labor went local on the Surf Coast with a pledge to save Jan Juc’s Bob Pettit Reserve. Shadow planning minister Brian Tee and South Barwon candidate Andy Richards said the the community would retain the park if Labor won government. “The Napthine Government is proposing Surf Coast Council buy the land for millions of dollars or pay much higher residential rates instead. Council would struggle to afford either,” Mr Tee said. “An Andrews government will solve the impasse by rezoning the land from residential to public park and sell it to council for $500,000.
“A Labor Government will keep this park where it belongs - in the hands of the community.” Mr Tee accused South Barwon MP Andrew Katos of threatening the homes of other local sporting reserves. “If Mr Katos gets his way, the cricket and tennis club, the kinder, the junior footy club and the playgroup will all be homeless.” Mr Richards said Premier Denis Napthine and Mr Katos “were effectively blackmailing council demanding a price they couldn’t afford or forcing them to pay exorbitant rent”. “This park belongs to the community, not to developers.”
would provide employment pathways for people to work in the city’s growing injury and insurance industry, he said. “We have committed to relocating WorkCover to Geelong if re-elected in November,” he said. “Along with the TAC, these two agencies will create the Australian Injury and Disability Network and
employ more than 1500 people in Geelong.” Mr Napthine said the centre would add to the “critical mass” required to create an international centre for trauma, rehabilitation and injury management. The Independent revealed last year that health sector leaders had declared Geelong in a unique posi-
tion to capitalise on the combination of the National Disability Insurance Agency, Transport Accident Commission, WorkCover, Barwon Health, St John of God Hospital and Deakin University. The Government also this week announced $4.7 million for Gordon Institute of TAFE to offer new “blended learning” to make courses “more innovative and industry focused”. A further $1 million was pledged for a Living Geelong water management plan, while Barwon Health received $550,000 for an Intelligent Ward Information System to improve patient care, safety and the use of staff and beds. Mr Napthine also announced another three years of support for Geelong’s Festival of Sails, whose 300 yachts, 3500 participants and 100,000 spectators are worth $1.9 million to the city annually. The first of 43 new VLocity railcars for V/Line travellers was also rolled out this week, with passengers on the Geelong line to benefit from the $261 million order. Roads Minister Terry Mulder announced $2.5 million for a new roundabout to improve access from the Great Ocean Road for Bellbrae’s Chocolaterie and Ice Creamery.
In brief Bomb scare A HOME-MADE bomb led to police cordoning off a Corio property yesterday. A Victoria Police spokeswoman said officers discovered the pipe-bomb during a search in Fairbairn Dve, with the area declared safe about 2pm.
Land talks A COMPANY is in negotiations to redevelop a 465-hectare site including Crown land for a 4000-dwelling estate at Moolap, State Government has revealed. Deputy Premier Peter Ryan said Ridley’s plan for its former salt works and the adjoining 289 hectares of Crown land it leases from the Government had potential to turn “a disused area into a real asset”.
Thefts arrest POLICE have arrested a Bentleigh man over a spate of alleged car thefts and burglaries on the Bellarine Peninsula in the past week. A police spokesperson said the 37-year-old was arrested during an alleged burglary in Portarlington on Tuesday.
Man critical A MAN in his 40s was airlifted to The Alfred hospital in a critical condition after rolling his car at Mannerim on Thursday morning. An Ambulance Victoria spokesman said the driver had head injuries after his car slammed into a tree on Swan Bay Rd.
Burglary hotspots THREE suburbs in northern Geelong have ranked near the top of a list of burglary hotspots in Victoria. Motorists organisation and insurer RACV said Corio, Norlane and North Geelong were all in its regional top 10 for burglaries.
Cadel farewell BARWON Head’s Tour de France hero will use a Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race named in his honour to farewell competitive racing. Cadel Evans said the race would be his last as organisers this week released course details for the event on 1 February.

Cats ‘happy’ with 2015 fixture By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN GEELONG has finally received eight home games at Simonds Stadium, including three in the first four rounds. But only one will be under the stadium’s $9 million lights in 2015, according to the AFL draw, released this week. After its season-opening Easter Monday MCG blockbuster against modernday rival Hawthorn, Geelong faces Fremantle, Gold Coast and North Melbourne at Kardinia Park.
Eight games in Geelong, one under $9m lights The Cats also have the least interstate matches since 2006. Cats chief Brian Cook welcomed the draw. “Overall we are very happy with the fixture,” Cook said. “It’s always a challenge for the AFL to satisfy clubs but eight games here at Simonds Stadium for the first time since 2009 and a good spread of day and night games throughout the fixture is definitely
a win for our members and supporters. “In an ideal world we would host all 11 home games at Simonds Stadium but we understand the need to take some games that will draw huge crowds to a venue such as the MCG. “We’re also pleased to have attractive games at the MCG against Hawthorn and Collingwood, and, as we saw last season, our clash with Carlton at Etihad is sure to
be a close battle. “Playing home games at Simonds Stadium is important to our supporters and we all should recognise that the AFL has indeed listened to the footy supporter in fashioning this fixture. “We have more day games than last season, which is a good outcome, but would have liked at least a couple of more night matches to take advantage of
the lights that were installed in 2013. “Games at Simonds Stadium are important for the local economy. With an extra game in the city it will translate into around $4 million in additional activity in and around Geelong. The Cats play Fremantle, Gold Coast, North Melbourne, Melbourne, Western Bulldogs, Brisbane, Sydney and Adelaide at home. Geelong plays Adelaide, Collingwood, Hawthorn, North Melbourne and Sydney twice over the 22-round season.
Mia’s open garden aiming to make a splash for club 300-plus jobs in $20m mill plans
TWO of Mia Cooke’s favourite pursuits will come together when she opens her enchanting garden to the public as a fundraiser this Sunday. The Point Lonsdale horticulturalist will show off her collection of cottage plants, natives, succulents and vegetables for Portarlington Mussels Masters Swimming Club. A long-term member of the club, the mother of three spends spare time indulging her passions for gardening and swimming. She called the Mussels Masters a “wonderful group”. “There are upward of 20 members of all ages, including many mums with small children. “Swimming is just so good for fitness, and being able to get together each week as a group is fantastic for health and wellbeing.” Ms Cooke won a gold medal in breaststroke at last year’s Masters Games in Geelong. The open garden would raise money for the club’s “young mums” to compete at Melbourne’s aquatic events and other venues, she said. “By doing this I hope we can raise enough funds to ensure nobody misses out.” The garden will be open from 10am to 4pm at 11 Lakeland Crt. Entry will cost $5. BACKYARD FUNDRAISER: Mia Cooke tends her Point Lonsdale garden with daughter Jessie Adams.
ALMOST 300 jobs will flow form a proposed $20 million feed mill at Lara, federal MPs have announced. Industry Minister Ian McFarlane and Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson said the project would create about 250 jobs during construction and 20 ongoing. “This new mill is good news for Lara, local poultry and pig farmers as well as cereal grain growers,” Mr McFarlane said. “The project will support the Golden Plains Food Production Precinct, sited between Geelong and Ballarat, by providing a local, cost-effective supply of livestock food.” Ms Henderson said the mill would also create 25 “downstream” jobs. The Ridley Agriproducts mill received $800,000 in funding from a Geelong Region Innovation and Investment Fund, set up to help offset job losses in the city’s manufacturing sector. Ridley boss Tim Hart welcomed the assistance as “an important component in the financial considerations for the project”. “We are working hard to secure the planning approvals and customer commitments required for the new feed mill project to be commercially viable,” he said. “We remain excited about having a poultry and pig presence covering the western districts, about the long-term prospects for livestock production in the region and about generating new employment opportunities for Geelong.”

Bail plea refused over witness fear
Scam fears for rentals By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN
POLICE will investigate allegations of “unscrupulous persons or entities defrauding Geelong investors in a $4.5 billion National Rental Affordability Scheme (NRAS). Parliamentary secretary to the Minister for Social Services, Concetta Fierravanti-Wells, said Geelong investors should be wary of claims that properties had NRAS incentives. The scheme provides investors with tax breaks reaching $10,000 for dwellings with affordable rent for lowincome tenants such as students. But “unscrupulous entities in Geelong had falsely claimed some properties had NRAS incentives, Ms Fierravanti-Wells said. “Over recent weeks we have become aware of criminal and civil complaints also being made by parties affected by the alleged events. “It has also been alleged that some parties have falsified correspondence from the department in order to convince potential investors that the incentives are legitimate. This may mean that in some cases investors may have paid large sums of money for nothing. “The government warns investors, developers and charitable organisations
to be wary of committing any funds towards a dwelling under NRAS without first verifying with the department that the property...is indeed eligible. The Department of Social Services posted a cautionary note about the trading of NRAS incentives. “Be extremely careful before agreeing to pay any funds in respect of a transaction involving an allocated or reserved incentive, the post read. “If you have paid money and subsequently discovered that you have been taken advantage of in this way, we recommend that you seek legal advice and or report it to the police. “We would recommend that you do not agree to the payment of any funds until you have received direct confirmation from the Department that an NRAS incentive is allocated to a particular dwelling. NRAS properties have been advertised at Geelong Golf Club and Armstrong Creek estates. Deakin University built more than 300 NRAS-subsidised beds for students at its Waurn Ponds campus. A $100 million waterfront student housing project is on hold until the NRAS issues are resolved.

GOLDEN MOMENT: Mick Robins admires the $175,000, 18-carat gold Melbourne Cup at Geelong’s National Wool Museum on Saturday. Mr Robins trained Rain Lover to dual Melbourne Cup victories in the 1960s. The cup was in town as part of a regional tour to promote the Melbourne race next week.
A DRUG addict with an extensive criminal history and facing court in connection with the disappearance of Leopold’s Paul Kingsbury was an unacceptable risk for bail, a magistrate has ruled. John Nelis, 31, is facing charges of kidnap, three counts of false imprisonment and being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm. Nelis was dressed in a dark suit, his hair closely cropped and with a stringy tail, when the bail hearing was told he had committed to staying with his mother if granted bail on a $69,000 surety. But Magistrate Ann McGarvie said he could interfere with witnesses if bailed. Geelong Magistrates Court heard that Nelis had a long list of prior convictions, including the use of violence and failing to answer bail. “He has also been a drug addict for at least four years and is allegedly addicted to ice,’’ the magistrate said. “He has a history of failing to comply with court orders.’’ Ms McGarvie believed police had reasonable grounds indicating that Nelis was connected to the disappearance of Mr Kingsbury. Mr Kingsbury, a 27-year-old father of one, was last seen in Larkins Lane, Moolap, in the early hours of 6 July. Police believe he was abducted and murdered but have been unable to find his body. Nelis was on the run from police for weeks before his arrest in Fairbairn Dve, Corio. “It appears it was pure luck that police were able to apprehend him on September 9,’’ Ms McGarvie said. “I’m satisfied that he’s an unacceptable risk to meet with bail conditions.’’

Geelong project. “Use whatever adjective you want, it’s definitely not a part of it, he said. “This is about utilising all the sources of water – storm, recycled, rain and tank – for non-drinking purposes to save the drinking water for human use. The Government launched the $1 million “whole-of-water-cycle management
plan this week. Mr Walsh said Living Geelong would prevent “panicked decisions during drought. “The next drought could be next year or in 10 years – it’s critical to do the planning now. “It will benefit Geelong by improving the liveability of the city, particularly in
dry years. There will be more greenery and more moisture in the environment. Greens lead candidate for Western Victoria Lloyd Davies said using recycled sewage for drinking water had “currently no value. Considering sewage water in drinking supplies was a “sensitive topic, he said. “At the moment we should focus on
using it for community gardens and public parks because there’s so much room for growth in that area. Mr Davies said Geelong had a shortage of homes with “third pipes to receive recycled water. “We should flush toilets using recycled water. It’s crazy how few people actually have a third pipe, he said.

TORQUAY surfing industry giant Quiksilver is mired in financial quicksand and will be bankrupt within months, according to a private investment management firm. In a lengthy analysis of the troubled surfwear company, Hadrian Capital Management said Quiksilver’s demise was “inevitable. “We strongly believe that Quiksilver’s demise at this point is inevitable, it’s likely only a matter of months now – not years. Published on investor website Seeking Alpha, Hadrian’s analysis said alternative business models could have saved the company two years ago. But implementing rescue measures now was too late in light of Quiksilver’s recent financial reports, Hadrian said. The investment firm said wholesalers would turn to betterselling merchandise and Quiksilver’s base of specialty stores would “shutter or avoid stocking shelves with Quiksilver brand merchandise.
, n e k o r b e r a y e h t When . d e t n a w n u r o d tire
“Quiksilver’s primary business segments have faced significant brand equity erosion and market share losses over the past 12 months, particularly across Roxy and Quiksilver brands. Hadrian noted that Quiksilver’s share price had suffered a 76 per cent year-on-year decline. Following what he called Hadrian’s “virtual obituary for the company, former Quiksilver executive Phil Jarratt said the last financial year had been an “unmitigated disaster. Writing on surfing website Swellnet, Jarratt said the recent retirement of Quiksilver co-founder Bob McKnight would not change anything for the company. “Aggrieved shareholders would like to breathe a collective sigh of relief and wait for the new broom to sweep the once-great brand back to profit. But it ain’t gonna happen, Mr Jarratt said. “He leaves behind a legacy of directionless paper-shuffling and a management team in total disarray.
“Management morale (is) at an all-time low after mass sackings across the board and all three core brands suffered major losses in all markets. Mr Jarratt said the Hadrian analysis “produced compelling reasons why bankruptcy was not just an option for Quiksilver, it was the only way forward. However, Torquay’s other surf wear giant, Rip Curl, has avoided a similar fate, riding a wave of climbing sales in the past two years since a restructure. Rip Curl reported a 63 per cent increase in profit to $23 million last financial year as revenue rose 7.8 per cent to $429.58 million. The turnaround followed a board decision to drop a planned $400 million sale of the business last year. Like Quiksilver, the publiclylisted Billabong suffered a loss of $233.7 million for 2014, following a $859.5 million loss the previous year.

SERVED UP: Golden Plates winners with their awards, from left, Bellbrae Harvest, King of the Castle, The French Corner and Sticks and Stones Café.
11th dining awards plated up BELLBRAE Harvest and Winters Café have won the top categories at the region’s premier awards for dining venues. The Bellbrae restaurant won its first overall category in the Golden Plate Awards, while Winter’s again claimed the Independent-sponsored People’s Choice award. Almost 200 guests gathered at Bannockburn’s Clyde Park on Monday night for the 11th annual Golden Plates. The 17 categories covered everything from fine dining and cafés through to best chef and value for money. The awards use an audited judging process to evaluate entrants on a range of criteria, ranging from service to use of local produce and the quality of wine lists. Awards head judge Kevin Moloney presented the overall prize to Bellbrae Harvest owner and chef David Veal and his team. “Bellbrae Harvest continues to make strong statements,” Mr Moloney said. “As a major player in the Geelong/Otway region, the unique restaurant never falters in delivering one of the region’s most outstanding meals. Pulling from the strong provenance of the region and loudly celebrating the local food and wine, the creations produced by the talented and masterful David Veal cross many cooking techniques and styles. “The result is a gastro-fest of flavour, colour and daring fun. In a word, superb.” Tony Galpin, the managing editor of the Geelong Independent, said he was rapt to again present the People’s Choice award. “Community interaction is what the Independent

The amendment came into operation on 23 October 2014 when notice of the approval was published in the Government Gazette. The amendment facilitates the use and development of the Armstrong Creek Town Centre Precinct (bounded by Boundary Road, Surf Coast Highway, Barwarre Road and Burvilles Road) by:
• amending the Municipal Strategic Statement to reflect the sub-regional role of the Armstrong Creek Town Centre and importance of sustainability outcomes in the Armstrong Creek Urban Growth Area; • applying Schedule 5 to the Urban Growth Zone to the precinct;
Access through Ewing Blythe Drive will be prohibited to all traffic between the working hours 7.00am and 4.00pm. This will result in all through traffic having to use a detoured route. Fuel lobby calls for ‘open minds’
Fracking ‘okay’
1158453-KM41-14
GEELONG should keep an “open mind” on fracking despite its council voting to oppose it, according to a fuel industry lobby group. Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association (APPEA) encouraged residents to be wary of “fracking fear” when Victoria needed natural gas supplies. APPEA released its statement as anti-fracking activists gathered at a council meeting this week to celebrate the decision earlier this month. Councillors voted to write to State Government, stating coun-
cil’s opposition to “onshore gas extraction”. APPEA has since been advertising in Geelong, saying natural gas could fuel Victoria “for generations”. The organisation’s statement to the Independent this week expanded on support for fracking. “Geelong has a long history as a leading manufacturing centre in Australia and one which relies heavily on natural gas as an energy source,” an APPEA spokesperson said. “While there is no indication there are commercially viable sources of natural gas in the Geelong area, we’re asking people to
keep an open mind about much needed natural gas production in Victoria. “We would also encourage people not to accept fracking fear at face value. The truth is hydraulic fracturing is a safe, reliable and well-understood technology that has been used safely and successfully in Australia to improve gas flow in wells since the 1950s.” Fracking is the process of injecting liquid underground to fracture ground structure, releasing gas. Attempts to tap geothermal energy use a similar technique. Opponents say fracking can contaminate groundwater and damages farmland.

Epworth hospital deal A PRIVATE hospital will deliver public health care to southern Geelong in a deal with State Government. The opposition labelled the arrangement with Epworth HealthCare a broken promise but the Government said it had delivered on its pledge to provide public services at Waurn Ponds. Epworth HealthCare would provide the services in tandem with its $277 million private hospital, to be built at Deakin University. Health Minister David Davis said the arrangement meant
more money for Geelong’s existing public hospital in Ryrie St. “The Waurn Ponds Community Hospital will complement the expanded health services being delivered to the Geelong community, including the major expansion at University Hospital Geelong.” “This is an historic deal that will ensure that public patients in Geelong’s south-west will be able to access timely first class care, closer to home. “The Napthine Government has driven a hard bargain to get the best-value outcome for the community.”
“This has reinforced that the project concept offers a significant opportunity to the Geelong region.” Mr Guy said the fast-tracked projects would create thousands of Geelong jobs. The other projects included a major retail and logistics precinct at Avalon Airport, a Fyansford residential and commercial development, Simonds Stadium light tower signage, rezoning Lovely Banks land, attracting investment
in central Geelong and encouraging supermarket expansions. “More than 3000 jobs will be created by the new fast-tracked projects, with another 5400 jobs to be generated at the recently approved Armstrong Creek town centre,” he said. “A re-elected Napthine Coalition Government will also fast-track planning approvals in Geelong’s industrial precincts, including the Geelong Ring Road Employment Precinct.”

A PLEA in last week’s Independent to fast-track planning processes for a $320 million farm has won State Government support. Planning Minister Matthew Guy this week announced he would speed up approvals for the project along with nine other Geelong developments. Sustainable Farms plans to build Australia’s first waste-toenergy-to-food farm near Avalon, creating more than 1000 jobs. Sustainable Farms spokesperson Michael Mifsud said the consortium had been waiting to hear Mr Guy’s announcement. “The formal announcement gives Sustainable Farms the clearance to commence the planning process, consultation and investigations required to move ahead with the $320 million Lara project with a view to commence construction in 2015,” Mr Mifsud said. “Of the 1000 jobs expected to be created, there will be skilled and semi-skilled positions related to the energy centre and for the management of the enterprise as a whole, the bulk of the jobs will be related to food production and glasshouse management. “Sustainable Farms Australia is committed to providing the documentation and work required bringing this important project to the Geelong community and with it a long-term, sustainable economic benefit to the region. “We’ve also had preliminary discussions with nearby large businesses, industry and community stakeholders. “Since launching the project, we’ve been approached by a number of Australian and international agriculture-based businesses interested in the concept of creating a sustainable-based food production facility.

Purple haze of bargain Mode DEEP purple is a gorgeous colour to wear for spring going into summer. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with wearing richer, darker colours in the warmer months, no reason to limit them just for winter. Plus, there’s no need to restrict your wardrobe and feel pressured to emulate the weather with colour choices – just go for lighter fabric weights. Out and about, I discovered a real gem of a boutique called Second Mode, in Geelong West, which sells designer and high-end designer clothes for a lot less than the original price due to the items being ‘pre-loved’. In other words, shoppers can find wonderful secondhand designer labels at unbelievably frugal prices, locally on Pakington Street. Second Mode is among a handful of Geelong shops with second-hand designer labels in good condition for low prices. How can you possibly resist? Oh, the buzz of finding bargains when and where possible is truly superb. If the feeling could be bottled it would be priceless. Second Mode’s tasteful shopfront and elegant window display delivers little tastes of the multitude of wonders that can be found inside. It‘s an intimate space in which to browse bargains along with a friendly service. The shop is nicely stocked with a great selection of clothes, shoes, accessories and so on, and is often alive with ladies scanning the rails dripping with bargains.

Pretty quickly I found a super duper royal purple colour silk dress. Side-knotted style and draped at the side, with a crew neck and fully lined, the Diane Von Furstenberg design was just waiting to be tried on. Celebration time, it was a great find and the price was even more fabulous. In mint condition, the dress was only $84. Okay, it might sound a little pricey at first, but hold your horses: the price of the dress new looks to be around $400. Team the dress, or something similar, with a high stiletto or even a pair of stylish sandals like thongs, which we Poms call flip flops. Finish off the outfit with a clutch bag and you’re set to go fabulously wherever you choose. Just to add a cherry to the cake, Second Mode actually sells your items, too, if you bring them into the shop and they’re selected as suitable for the boutique’s retail style and also if existing stock levels aren’t too high. The owner of the items receives a percentage on any sales. Nice! All of a sudden the chore of spring cleaning might sound a little more exciting.

Bouquets to Ocean Grove Removals for squeezing me in at the last minute. Ken and Jason were friendly, efficient and a pleasure to deal with. I am grateful to them. Moved House, Jan Juc Buckets to drivers who parked cars in front of garbage bins, obstructing trucks trying to collect waste. They couldn’t empty the bins. How would you feel if you had to keep your rubbish another week, or green waste two weeks, especially if the bins were full? Please be considerate. Not Happy, Corio
Buckets to V/Line. Last Saturday night an attendant announced that anyone who needed to “spew” would have their nose rubbed in it if they did it on a seat. A young girl who did spew was paraded to the toilet and berated on the way. What a thing to witness. Mark, Lara Buckets to an inconsiderate idiot who parked in a disabled park in Melbourne to get his clothes laundered. Then he decided it was funny to be caught out. Where’s the respect, people? Spy catches Ford ‘testing new car’

FORD has been caught testing a new car around Geelong, according to a motoring website. “Exclusive spy shots” from a reader of motoring.com.au showed three disguised but similar Ford sedans driving between Highton and Lara, where the company has a testing ground. The website said a Ford Territory accompanied the cars, “shepherding them and fending off the occasional curious bystander”.
TEST: A Ford Lincoln. “The three cars looked larger than the current Mondeo and all three were left-hand-drive and
loaded to the gills with test equipment.” The website speculated that Ford was locally testing new vehicles for foreign markets. The company has announced it will stop making cars in Australia, costing hundreds of Geelong jobs. The Lincoln is a long-standing Ford brand in the USA but has yet to appear for sale in the Australian market.

Letters CONTRARY to the urban myths so fervently espoused by Vicky Grossa and Phil Kaufman (Letters, 24 October), renewable energy is not only costly but does nothing to address the problem it is allegedly supposed to address. Countries like Spain and Germany, which have invested heavily in so-called renewable energy, are tottering on the edge of fiscal collapse. Spain has 40 per cent unemployment and the once-thriving Germany economy is under serious strain because of high energy prices, pushed up by massive subsidies to the green-energy sector. As for Mr Kaufman’s claim that the “effects of climate change are real”, he can’t be serious. Despite the rapid increase of atmospheric carbondioxide (CO2) over the past three decades, Earth’s temperature has actually decreased slightly. There is a disconnect between CO2 and temperatures rising, or falling for that matter. Carbondioxide does not drive climate change and it’s concentration in the atmosphere is irrelevant in terms of impacting climate change.
Wasting billions of dollars – correction, trillions – trying to decarbonise our economy will send a wrecking ball through it. Instead of building a better future for our children, the sheer stupidity of trying to play King Canute with the climate will only result in higher energy prices, which will drive jobs offshore and greatly increase cost-of-living pressures. Instead of creating a better future, going down the renewable-energy path will exasperate poverty levels, push up unemployment and divert funds away from health, education and badly needed infrastructure projects. Alan Barron Grovedale
Veterans’ index fingered FEDERAL Government introduced on 9 October legislation into the House of Representatives to downgrade the indexation of veterans’ disability pensions. While Labor, the Greens and Palmer’s United Party voted against it, the coalition’s majority passed the bill.
If the bill passes in the Senate, the pensions of disabled veterans and war widows will fall further and further behind community income standards. Labor, Greens and Palmer’s United Party senators are set to vote against it but the Government has said it will not abandon the proposed legislation, presumably hoping it will have a Senate majority after the next federal election. Prior to the last election Senator Michael Ronaldson toured Australia speaking at RSLs, telling members that when he got into power he, along with the Prime Minster, would see that our Defence Force Retirements and Death Benefits were indexed the same as the Age Pension. They did this but now they’re trying to make up for it by reducing our disability pensions. Every serviceman and woman retiree should fight this by letting local MPs know they aren’t happy. Bob Thompson Ocean Grove
Email: editorial@geelongindependent.com.au PO Box 407, Geelong, 3220 Fax: 5249 6799
Retirees might in future be required to take out loans against their homes to fund, in whole or part, their retirement, leaving little capacity to bequeath anything to families. It would also leave little or nothing to fund a bed in a nursing home. Age pensioners are now 10 per cent of Australia’s population of 23 million. This percentage will increase dramatically over the next 20 years. It takes little common sense to appreciate that such a proposal will consign to the political grave any party that pursues it to the political grave. Michael J Gamble Belmont
Grave mistake on homes GEE, the Abbott Government is managing to frighten the horses: older voters.

TRIBUTE SHOW - SA TRIBUTE SHOW SAT 24th MAY T
RI
BU TE Sat 22nd Nov
By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN ROSS Wilson plays in seasons, just like an AFL footballer. It’s not because he plays the game, or because he’s a football fanatic – he’s actually a St Kilda tragic. It’s just harder to get the punters to leave the couch when finals are on. It’s also school holidays, so he takes family time out but he’s ready and raring to go come October. So Geelong fans still coming to terms with the Cats’ straightsets exit this season can drown a few sorrows and have a few laughs with Ross and his band, The Peaceniks. The former frontman of legendary Australian band Daddy Cool and writer of its most iconic hit, Eagle Rock, will wow the audience with favourites old and new.
In fact, Daddy Cool will play together again soon when the four original members – Gary Young, Wayne Duncan, Ross Hannaford and Wilson – are inducted into Melbourne Music Hall of Fame. Wilson promises renditions of Eagle Rock as well as Come Back Again and Hi Honey Ho but says it will most likely be the last time the band performs. But for his Geelong gig the evergreen musician will also draw on his years with Mondo Rock and some of his solo albums over the past decade. “We do a mixture of songs from Daddy Cool and Mondo Rock and more recent stuff as well, so everyone will get a good dose of Ross Wilson,” he laughed. Wilson seems to be ever smiling and with his easy-going and relaxed persona front and centre. “I do like to have a few laughs
and write the odd funny song,” he admitted. “But we take the music seriously, we all work hard at keeping it rolling along and I have a terrific team, great band, all working together to put on good show.” Wilson still dabbles in production, harking back to his days as producer for Skyhooks and their phenomenal albums Living In The Seventies (1974), Ego Is Not A Dirty Word (1975) and Straight In A Gay Gay World (1976). “Quite often I wonder how we got to where we are,” Wilson pondered. “Australia is not a big country and we never had any major international success but all the streams have connected to make a big river.” Ross Wilson and the Peaceniks play Corio’s Gateway Hotel, where his mission will be to “get people out their seats”, tomorrow night.
GPAC tribute to Beatles anniversary GEELONG will experience a flashback to the days of Beatlemania when the The Beatles 50th Celebration arrives in the city tonight. The world’s premier Beatles tribute band, the Fabulous Beatle Boys, will deliver its acclaimed recreation of the Fab Four’s one and only tour of Australia. The show at Geelong Performing Arts Centre will mark the 50th anniversary of the tour, which music historians and social commentators attributed with changing Australian social and cultural attitudes overnight while ushering in a new pop culture and fashions as boys started wearing their hair longer and girls’ skirts grew shorter. Internationally recognised rock music guru and Beatles
TOP MOPS: International tribute band The Fabulous Beatle Boys. author Glenn A Baker said The Fabulous Beatle Boys impressed “with their deft grasp of the Fab Four’s entire span”. “The identical song set, the outfits, the instruments and atmosphere will be faithfully recreated,” they said. “Audiences will be encouraged to help recreate that atmo-
sphere; to scream, shout and jump about. Well, maybe parents might leave that to their daughters and grandchildren. “Whatever they decide, it is going to be huge fun and an experience to savour all over again. “To increase the duration of the concert to today’s acceptable standards of length, the Fabulous Beatle Boys will also add the Beatles’ biggest and most loved hits but the original concert will be performed intact and as it was all those years ago. “Audiences will experience the Beatles music and sound as it was all those years ago and how it might have been today had the Beatles still been together and using today’s sophisticated technology and equipment.” The Fabulous Beatle Boys show begins at 8pm.

Joe Camilleri and The Black Sorrows, left, and Amity Affliction demonstrate the standard of live music at Geelong’s Wool Exchange.
Wooly top for music, dining daily and available in-house or take-away. High tea is served 2.30pm Fridays as a perfect way to catch up with friends while enjoying delicious home-made sandwiches, fresh scones, lamingtons, hedgehog and other baked treats. Function packages for 20 to 600 guests can be arranged to suit any budget. With a long, rich history in Geelong, The Wool Exchange is renowned for its food and service. Complex manager Sean Street, one of Geelong’s finest chefs, finds inspiration in the 1927 building to create culinary experiences reflecting its grandeur. Fully-restored windows bathe the Wooly’s restaurant in natural light, creating an ideal atmosphere for almost any occasion. Custom menus are created for different events. Packages are available for wedding receptions, parties, corporate events, birthdays and more. The Wool Exchange has children’s and vegetarian menus, as well as coffee served by experienced baristas. FOR THOSE dreaming of a tasty pizza sitting on the banks of a Venice canal, Pizzas with Attitude’s new Highton store offers the next best experience. The 40-seat restaurant is highlighted by a big, beautiful wall mural depicting a classic Venetian scene. Produced by Geelong artist Louise Woodmansey, the mural sets the scene for the vibrant family restaurant. Serving pastas starting from $13, with homemade ricotta gnocchi and traditional homemade
lasagne, the venue is also fully licensed. A choice of kid’s meal deals of pasta and ice-cream and topping from just $10 makes it a great fun, family restaurant. The new Pizzas with Attitude Highton restaurant is open seven days a week, with pizza nights on Mondays and Tuesdays and a full menu from Wednesday to Sunday. Plus Pizzas with Attitude East Geelong is still busily keeping patrons, corporate clients and

Affordable luxury ABOVE-GROUND pools have advanced substantially over the past 30 years. Gone are the days of an eyesore in the backyard. Classic Pools now has a range that can be installed completely inground with features such as saltwater, deep ends, built-in lighting – the list is endless. Now above-ground pools can look like expensive inground pools thanks to products such as the Classic Extreme modular pool. Decking can be installed over the coping or specially designed pavers can be utilised.
Friday, 31 October, 2014 Page 27

TORQUAY Tinting’s Vincenzo ‘Vinnie’ Tabacco says now is a good time to consider tinting. So get in early and gain immediate benefit early at the start of the warmer season, immediately minimising heat and glare discomfort. Tinting keeps homes cooler in summer and provides many other cost-cutting environmental benefits. Vinnie says tinting ensures glare-free comfort year round. “You immediately start saving the money you spend on tinting because you rely far less on air-conditioning on hot days and reduce the fading of furnishings.
Torquay Tinting’s Vinnie Tabacco. “I it also helps prevent ageing and skin cancer, which is vital for every member of your family, including your treasured pets.”
Vinnie has been providing Surf Coast, Bellarine Peninsula and Geelong home and business owners with top-standard tinting services for over 15 years. “After going over the job I narrow down which facets are most important to the client, whether it’s to reject heat, reduce glare, improve comfort, health, safety, privacy or fading of interiors,” he says. “I advise people honestly for the best possible solution and ensure very high standards.” Vinnie is available at Torquay Tinting for advice or quotes on 0419 304 610 or visit torquaytinting.com.au.

U3A keeping brains active
1160908-RC44-14
is pleased to invite you and your friends to a talk by David Tournier from the Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-operative
UNIVERSITY of the Third Age (U3A) is preparing for exciting new courses in Geelong next year for anyone seeking to expand their general knowledge while expanding their social network. Depending on the numbers enrolled, members will be able to learn about everything from the kings and queens of England, to mosaics, computers, politics and Aboriginal cultures. Other activities include political discussions, a walking group and an Armchair Travel program, while monthly guest speakers will continue to be free to mem-
bers and the general public in 2015. U3A is an international volunteer organsation offering learning for seniors in a social environment. U3A Corio Bay conducts classes with durations of up to two hours, usually between 10am and 4pm weekdays during school terms, at Centenary Hall, Cox Rd, Norlane. The Corio Bay branch also has opportunities for retired professionals and others to share their skills and passions by tutoring or leading a U3A group.
Participating as a tutor or member helps keeps brains active while socialising with other people sharing similar interests. U3A attracts many seniors as members but has no age limit, so everyone in the community is invited to participate in the stimulating courses and study group. With a low annual subscription of just $25, U3A Corio Bay is also great value for money. More information about joining U3A or acting as a tutor is available by emailing info@ u3acoriobay.org.au or visiting its website, u3acoriobay.org.au.
Dave is the Cultural Heritage Education Officer for the Wathaurong Co-operative and will speak on the History of the Wathaurong and Aboriginal people of the past and also include up to date info on Aboriginal people today. Dave will bring some artifacts to show and promote discussion. This presentation is FREE to all U3A members and their friends and will be held at Centenary Hall on Thursday 6th November from 1pm-3pm Please RSVP to the Secretary on 0458 636 839 to reserve your seat for this interesting presentation.

Sirocco Travel & Cruise’s Julie Savieri, Tegan Shaw, Gerlinde Greig and Emma Atchison can help clients enjoy the trip of a lifetime.
See migration hyenas and wild dogs on the prowl. As a natural event, the precise timing and route of the migration changes yearly. Sirocco Travel & Cruise can help clients experience the migration with its Kenya-Tanzania combination safari covering the most famous premium game parks and reserves in east Africa. The safari program offers rare opportunities to interact with ethnic communities and see the “big five” of Africa: lions, cape buffalo, savanna elephants, leopards and rhinos. The safari ends with chances
to observe the “special five”, only found north of the equator: Grevy’s zebra, beisa oryx antelope, swala twiga gazelle, reticulated giraffe and Somali ostrich. Also included in the trip are opportunities to experience the majestic Victoria Falls and South Africa’s Cape Town. Sirocco’s Gerlinde Greig will personally escort the small group on the tour. Anyone interested in the oncein-a-lifetime safari can contact Gerlinde at Sirocco Travel & Cruise, Shop 33, Newcomb Central, Newcomb, phone 5248 1605 or email gerlinde@siroccotravel. com.au. 1158483-DJ44-14
THE great annual migration of millions of zebra, wildebeest and antelope in east Africa tops almost every list of safari experiences. Travellers planning to see it need information like when to arrive and where to stay, particularly in Kenya and Tanzania The animals’ journey of around 2900km includes spectacular and dangerous river crossings from July to September when the herds battle strong currents and hungry crocodiles lying in wait. Out on the plains the herds face Africa’s impressive predators, including lions, leopards,

IndySport Season bleak after Finch flop AFTER just five rounds of season 2014/2015, it appears the finals hopes of the Geelong Cricket Club are all but gone after the Cats lost o Frankston Penninsula last Saturday. With their backs against the wall, the Cats did a reasonable job bowling first, restricting their hosts to 8/179 from 50 overs. Jack Sheppard (2/33) and Jeremy Hart (2/41) were the pick of the bowlers. With Aussie T20 skipper Aaron Finch in the lineup, Geelong would have been confident of getting its season back on track. Alas, two balls into the innings and Finch was out for one. However, Hayden Butterworth (52) and Eamonn Vines (31) saw the Cats cruise to 1/87. But from there things went pear-shaped as the lack of depth in the middle-order was exposed, seeing the side crash to all out for 144 in a disappointing day for the club. Things don’t get any easier in this competition,
Local

with Geelong hosting fifth placed St Kilda over the next two Saturdays. Perhaps the chance to bat for long periods of time is just what the doctor might order for a side short of confidence. However, the Cats will need to improve dramatically to win this one. In Geelong Cricket Association match of the round, North Geelong appears to have the upperhand over St Joseph’s after posting a very competitive 9/276 from 85 overs. Shane Dillon top-scored with 81, while superstar skipper Jake Thorne continued his good form with 71.
For Joeys, Trent Walerys showed his class with 3/45 while Justin Foss and Jack O’Donoghue took two wickets apiece. While this is a healthy total to defend, the Magpies will know that St Joseph’s is more than capable of chasing them down tomorrow and will need to claim early wickets to put the pressure on from the get go. In division two, Highton did all the hard work early against Thomson only to blow it all away late on day one. After dismissing the Tigers for just 131, with only Grant Dew (64) showing any resistance, the Heat would have been cock a hoop. Brandon Ross (3/22) and Mark Freijah (3/31) were the destroyers. But in an awful 16 overs before stumps, Highton crashed to 4/17 after James Menzies (2/6) struck early. While all is not lost, Luke Daffy will hold the key tomorrow. If the veteran can regain some momentum it will still be a small target to chase down, and
if he can find some allies the game could still have a positive outcome for the Heat. Bell Park’s season in division three hangs by a thread after the Dragons failed with the bat last week despite keeping Shelford to a moderate total. At 0/78 after winning the toss, Shelford was flying but the Bell Park bowlers, led again by Jhye Kenna (4/51), dragged their side back into it when they dismissed their hosts for 198. With 21 overs to face on day one, the Dragons would have hoped to casually knock some runs off the target without too much fuss. But Shelford had other ideas, ripping through their top order to see them finish day one on 6/55. Jaydon Etteridge was the key with the new ball, taking 4/22. Bell Park skipper Ashlee Carter is still at the crease and while he’s there his side is a chance. But too often he’s been unable to find anyone willing to stick around with him and it’s hard to see tomorrow being any different.
Snapper season kicks into top gear as anglers ply sheltered bay water On the

SNAPPER season really kicked in over the past week, with anglers catching fish from Corio Bay to Queenscliff. The bay’s sheltered waters were particularly popular, encouraging Anthony Ghin set out last week in search of snapper. He anchored up, set out a spread of rods and boated a 2.2kg fish and a 1.1m gummy shark, both on squid in only an hour on the water. The outer-harbour produced excellent mixed bags of snapper, pike, flathead, squid and whiting in reasonable numbers. Adrian Cole and Mark Sesar fished for whiting off Mountain View Quarries. They used Mark’s secret burley recipe for a catch of 21 whiting from 35cm to 43cm as well as numerous pinkies, all in 4.5m of water. Stevie Prior and Nick Panozzo chased snapper again around the mussel beds off Clifton Springs. They boated three snapper, with Nick landing his personal best of 8.5kg. Steve then set out again with mate Steve Arthy to try replicating the earlier results. They soon had a five-way hook up and landed each fish, the biggest tipping the scales to 7.1kg. Sam Pitman and Jimmy Syrigos fished similar grounds on Sunday evening. They were about to quit when Jimmy’s rod buckled over with a 5kg snapper, so they stuck around and Sam caught an 8kg fish, with both taking fresh squid strips around the change of tide. Pike to 1m were taken over the spoil grounds off the Sands Caravan Park on Gulp Turtleback worms in Pumpkin Green. Flathead and pinkies to 45cm were also boated on plastics.
Queenscliff Harbour continued producing small squid on artificial jigs. Yamashita jigs in size 2.5 were best. Queenscliff Bight held excellent numbers of squid, too. They were also a lot larger, up to 2.5kg. Up the top end of the bay, Des Fielder and Rob Rizo anchored up in 4m off Point Cook with fresh
squid heads. They eventually caught a 7kg snapper at 12.30pm. The Barwon River estuary produced Australian salmon and King George whiting for anglers fishing form the banks with pippies and prawns. Anglers who went to the extra effort of pumping Bass yabbies caught bream to 40cm and a few mulloway to 65cm.

Offshore from Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads, Charlemont Reef hosted great numbers of pike for anglers trolling deep-diving hard-body lures. The warmer months should also begin producing kingfish off Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads, where trolling lures or casting into busting schools of fish on the surface is most productive. Snapper were holding in 40m in this area over the past week, with baits such as squid heads and pilchards accounting for most catches. On the freshwater scene, redfin became more active, proving great sport for anglers. The Barwon River around Queen’s Park harboured outstanding numbers of fish. Continually moving until finding a school of feeding fish was the key to success, especially when casting lures such as Atomic Shad 40 Deeps. The average size redfin out of the river has been around 800g, which makes for great fun on light gear. Last weekend’s Ron Nelson Memorial Junior Fishing clinic at Deakin University’s Waurn Ponds campus was a great success, with most kids catching rainbow trout to 350g. A redfin of 700grams was also caught with worms on a running sinker rig. Daniel Furneaux recently fished Lake Eildon where he caught a well-conditioned brown trout of 1.6kg along with a chunky redfin over 1kg. Other anglers caught yellowbelly to 4kg while trolling deepdiving lures and casting Jackal TN-50s. The next week’s options include fishing for snapper along the edge of the mussel beds off Clifton Springs, especially around the tide changes with fresh squid or pilchards baits. Freshwater enthusiasts could try the Barwon River for redfin on the warmer days. Send reports and photos to info@raylongtackle. com.au. All photos go in the draw for Tackle World Geelong’s monthly photo competition.
