Housing woes focus LIBERAL, Labor and Greens candidates took on the ‘unsexy’ issue of homelessness and housing affordability in a pre-election candidates’ forum at Montrose last week. The meeting, organised by Yarra Ranges Housing Action Group (YRHAG) to raise awareness and inform both the public and political players in five outer-east electorates of Croydon, Eildon, Monbulk, Gembrook and Evelyn, highlighted the problems, and talked about possible solutions. Reducing, or doing away with stamp duty, free access to government-owned land for social and public housing, utilising space on top of shopping centres and strip shops, mandating a percentage of social/public housing in housing developments, increasing funding for emergency rent support, developing ‘village-like’ housing, introducing a land-tax to discourage land-banking, and changes to negative gearing, were some of the proposals put forward during the night. Lisa Stockheim, manager Housing and Support with Anchor Inc., Steve Staikos from Community Housing Federation of Victoria and Yarra Ranges mayor Fiona McAllister, laid the foundation for a representative of each of the participating parties to, first, put their party’s policy, and then answer questions from the floor. Mr Staikos said the housing, homelessness and family violence community sector organisations were crying out to both the Labor and Liberal parties to recognise the importance of affordable housing and particularly social housing for people on the lowest incomes. “There is a gross under-supply in all of Victoria, but particularly in the outer east of Melbourne and we are seeking innovative ways to address the crisis,” he said. He said there needed to be collaboration between government and not-for-profit organisations to address the issue together. Ms Stockheim spoke of the importance of supporting organisations. “More and more local agencies are supporting people to fill prescriptions, buy fuel, fresh fruit and vegetables, provide hot meals, pay bills ... all these things that help them then put their money to paying their rent,” she said. Christine Fyffe (Liberal Member Evelyn), Sally Brennan (Labor candidate Eildon) and Mike Clark (Greens candidate Monbulk) spoke on behalf of their parties. Sandra Betts (Greens candidate Evelyn),

Andrea Millsom (Greens candidate Eastern Victoria) and Peter Harris (Labor candidate Evelyn) also attended. Mr Clark identified the need for increased funding to reduce housing lists that he said at June 2010 had half a million people on waiting lists. He called for new developments to include 20 per cent social housing and a scaling back of the Bushfire Management Overlay (BMO) to make housing more affordable in Yarra Ranges. Ms Brennan said a first priority for Labor would be to increase housing stocks, and agreed that the BMO was an issue in Eildon. She said cuts to funding for services that supported individuals - such as mental health and community legal services - jeopardised the capacity of low-income individuals and families to stay in housing. She said another initiative she would be pushing was to see a cap on 25 per cent of income for tenants in public housing. Ms Fyffe went over her government’s track record, but also put forward some thoughts of her own, including reassessing public housing as families change in size down and up. She spoke of the need to look at the needs of women and single men coming to the end of their working life, as well as pensioners. Peter Harris called for a bi-partisan approach, saying governments need to admit that they don’t have all the answers and work to bring about real and sustainable change. The reality check came from a Warburton resident who didn’t want to be identified but who said he had worked with homeless people from Melbourne to the Yarra Valley over a number of years. He said he found himself agreeing with all three candidates. “What we have here is solutions to the problem and local communities and local people all talking about the same thing. But, it’s not happening at that higher level; something happens when people get into government,” he said. He said social, public and private rental were all models that worked but needed people to get in, get it done and push it with governments. “We have had one review after another. I don’t have a lot of faith in that higher level of government, but I have faith in the local level. “We need to advocate the hell out of that,” he said.

Anzac honour extended By MELISSA MEEHAN IN MEMORY of soldiers serving the country, Mount Evelyn’s memorial garden stands out from the rest. But with a boost of Federal Government funding for an avenue of honour, the park is expected to get even better. Last week Casey MP Tony Smith met with Mount Evelyn RSL’s Roger Boness and Mount Evelyn Historical Group president Paula Herlihy and some of her members to announce a $6450 Anzac Centenary Grant for

an Avenue of Honour. “In 1918 the Mount Evelyn Progress Association planted two rows of 37 trees along Wray Crescent in memory of residents of Mount Evelyn and Silvan,” Mr Smith said. “This grant is to ensure the memory lives on.” The RSL, in partnership with the History Group, is still confirming exactly what they will do with the grant. They are set to include a boulder, and 19 small plaques either along a walkway or by existing trees in the park.

Ms Herlihy said that the funding would allow the groups involved to take the project to the next level. “We will consult with the community,” she said. “And we are hoping to have the project completed by early next year.” Mr Boness said that the avenue and plaques would add something extra special to the already popular garden. “It’s become a focal point of the town,” he said. “We are delighted.”

U-turn before polls PRESUMPTIVE legislation to assist cancer-affected firefighters may be one step closer, after the Coalition last week announced its support - if it is re-elected this month. But while Yarra Ranges firefighters are cautiously optimistic, they are asking for more details and say the battle isn’t over. On Thursday 6 November, Deputy Premier Peter Ryan announced that, if the Coalition won the 29 November election, it would introduce presumptive legislation for firefighters. Presumptive legislation would mean that, if a firefighter was diagnosed with a specific type of cancer linked with firefighting within a specific time-frame, it would be au-

tomatically assumed they received it as a result of their work. Currently, firefighters in Victoria must prove that their cancer was developed as a result of their work, which may require firefighters to recall specific incidents from over 10 years ago where they came into contact with toxins. Mr Ryan said the content of the legislation would be determined following the results of Monash University’s Australian Firefighters’ Health Study. “This is about providing certainty for Victoria’s hardworking firefighters and their families,” he said. Ferntree Gully CFA volunteer and District 13 president of Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria Bill Watson said he was waiting to see more

details of the promised legislation before commenting further. “We’re monitoring it very carefully,” he said. Mr Watson said that, ideally, he would like to see presumptive legislation for all career and volunteer firefighters supported by both parties. Healesville resident and volunteer firefighter, Damien Beeby, said the announcement was a step forward, but that he was also awaiting more details. “It’s good, it is a start, but there is a lack of clarity,” he said. He said that VFBV members would continue to campaign for the legislation until it became law. The Mail contacted the Opposition with regard to the announce-

ment, and was directed by a spokesperson to a Hansard statement by Shadow Minister for Police and Emergency Services Wade Noonan in June. The statement read that Labor supports the introduction of presumptive legislation for all firefighters. Federally employed firefighters and those in South Australia, Western Australia, the Northern Territory and Tasmania are already covered by presumptive legislation for 12 specific cancers. The government established a Firefighters Assessment Panel last year, after presumptive legislation was introduced by Greens MP Colleen Hartland, but voted down by Coalition MPs.

A time for giving By MELISSA MEEHAN CHRISTMAS time for many is a time of celebration and giving, but for some others it brings a world of stress and financial pressure. Dandenong Ranges Emergency Relief Service (DRERS) manager Tania Bevan knows about those pressures too well. For many of her clients, just buying their children a gift from Santa is too much. That’s why the DRERS

Giving Tree has been in the Belgrave Library for the past 13 years, and this year is no different. “All people have to do is take a tag off the tree and buy a present according to the tag,” Ms Bevan said. “Then bring the present back, unwrapped and put it under the tree.” Clients of DRERS then attend a day where they can choose a gift to give to their loved ones. “These gifts are going to locals and are only available to clients of DRERS.”

Ms Bevan said there was always a positive response to the tree, but they almost always struggled with gifts for teenagers. “We’ve found people say it’s hard to buy for a teenager, but whether it be a music gift card or something similar, it is going to be appreciated,” she said. “Those donations can be given to the staff at the library or at the front desk at DRERS”. Presents need to be returned to the tree by 12 December.

A WOORI Yallock man who is passionate about preserving the history of the White Dog Hotel in Lilydale has created a petition to save the hotel. Robert Hall has received 677 signatures to support the refurbishment of the 152-year-old Lilydale hotel. Ideas regarding the site’s fate have been circulating in social media, but Mr Hall said he would like to see the White Dog become an art gallery to showcase its historic memorabilia. The interest in saving the White Dog began from posting on social media, where locals both negatively and positively expressed their views. Mr Hall said the group of locals petitioning could see what potential the hotel could have, their passion driven by their memories of how it was and its current disused state. “Stand and watch people as they

drive or walk by and you will catch the looks of disappointment,” Mr Hall said. “If it’s left alone, it won’t last.” In 2008, the Mail reported that the White Dog Hotel was approved to be refurbished but nothing has been done since then. The heritage-listed site has been vandalised, the roof is rotted and some of the windows are smashed. It changed owners in 2001 but Mr Hall said it frustrated him to see the place left to rot. “It’s not that we want to take it off the owner’s hands,” Mr Hall said. “We just want it to be opened.” To sign the petition, visit https:// www.change.org/p/yarra-rangescouncil-r-ward-save-the-white-doghotel-dukes-saloon-lilydale. imperative that we reach REM sleep repeatedly overnight. Without it, you may experience muscular pain and fatigue, as well as reduced emotional

resilience and other behavioural syndromes. From a musculoskeletal point of view, people with muscle tightness, disc injury or joint pain are often woken overnight due to inadequate or incorrect sleeping postures. The head’s support system of neck muscles and ligaments need to relax overnight. Unfortunately, the everyday pillow is too soft and doesn’t provide the level of support the neck needs, causing it to strain.

This lack of ‘good sleep’ then contributes further to their pain cycle, and reduces the body’s ability to heal itself. If you are woken by pain or stiffness, then one of the easiest ways to help yourself is to make sure you have a good quality and correctly fitted mattress and pillow. This enables you to maintain the best possible posture overnight and provide a platform for ‘good sleep’ patterns and less pain. Qualified allied health professionals such as physiotherapists are best suited to advise on the correct pillow

WE all know that a good night’s sleep is one of the key pillars to good health. So the idea that we can actually do ourselves physical harm while sleeping may come as some surprise. Recent studies in the USA have identified that there are four key stages of sleep, with the final phase being the well-known REM (rapid eye movement) deep sleep cycle. The human body cycles through these four phases in order over a 90-100 minute period, and repeats this over the course of a sleep. It is

Skills training cuts By MELISSA MEEHAN ANOTHER skills training provider will close in Ferntree Gully, leaving a gaping hole in the area as the ones left stretch themselves to keep up with demand. Shadow Minister for Higher Education and Skills Steve Herbert and Labor candidate for Ferntree Gully Matt Posetti visited SkillsPlus last week to discuss the reasons why the course provider was being forced to close its doors. While SkillsPlus declined to speak with the Mail, Mr Herbert said that funding cuts from the current State Government meant the provider had no choice but to close its doors in Ferntree Gully. But incumbent Minister for Higher Education and Skills Nick Wakeling said there had been no cuts to student funding for VCAL. Their other sites will remain open in other areas throughout Victoria. It is believed that SkillsPlus is in discussions wth Mountain Districts Learning Centre to enrol the students left in limbo. Mr Herbert said that the closure was the latest in a series of skill training providers in the outer east that had been forced to close following funding cuts to TAFE and education. Earlier this year, Morrison House in Mount Evelyn closed its doors after 40 years before being taken over by Upper Yarra Community House. Swinburne TAFE in Lilydale was also closed. “How can anyone have faith in the Napthine Government if Minister Wakeling can’t support skills training in his own backyard,” Mr Herbert said.

Shadow Minister for Higher Education and Skills Steve Herbert and Labor candidate for Ferntree Gully Matt Posetti visited SkillsPlus last week to discuss funding cuts. “Under Denis Napthine, if you live in the outer east and you need to get skills training you’re on your own.” Mr Posetti said with youth unemployment rates “exploding” in the area, more and more kids were desperately looking for alternative learning and employment paths. Mr Wakeling said the system put in place by the previous Labor Government meant funding follows the student and as enrolments increase so did funding.

“Enrolments and providers of VCAL under the Coalition Government are currently at record levels and significantly higher now than at the same time last year,” Mr Wakeling said. “The Government supports VCAL as an essential part of what schools and training providers can offer students in the local area and across the state. “Labor loves to talk down TAFE and training. They have failed to support our young people who are

developing the skills they need for the jobs of the future. He said under the Coalition Government there had been a 13.3 per cent increase in government subsidised enrolments in the Eastern Metro region between 2010 and 2013. It is believed that the government is working with SkillsPlus, providers and schools to identify arrangements to support students with their studies next year.

Headspace for hub By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM ALARMING suicide rates are an issue that affects the entire community, according to La Trobe MP Jason Wood. Mr Wood announced recently that he is lobbying for a Headspace facility to be built at the Belgrave Health Hub as part of a push to reduce the impact of suicides. In an address to parliament on 21 October to recognise the immense toll of suicide on communities and to acknowledge that the government must do all it can to minimise the impact, he said that organisations such as Headspace made a real difference in reducing rates of suicide. “Headspace is a vital part of our youth mental health strategy. The help they provide for young people who can go through tough times is invaluable.” Suicide is a leading cause of death in Australia for men under the age of 44 and women under the age of 34, and one in every 10,000 Australians take their own life. Mr Wood said it was important that young people in the Belgrave area had access to mental health services. “I’m working very hard to get a Headspace facility in the Belgrave Health Hub. This is a major priority for me and the Dandenong Ranges.” Mr Wood also announced that a Headspace facility would be opened at Fountain Gate Shopping Centre. He said this new push backed up the ‘Hotspots’ program, where safety barriers were installed at areas of train track identified to be suicide risks. “The government’s Hotspots program is an excellent example of the practical measures to reduce suicide hotspots through the implementation of capital works.” Mr Wood encouraged those suffering depression or anxiety to seek the help of organisations such as Beyondblue, Lifeline, the Black Dog Institute, SANE Australia and Headspace. “We need to get people who suffer with depression and anxiety to seek help. You see, depression and anxiety can be managed to a certain extent. “But to do so, we all need to recognise troublesome depression and anxiety when it presents itself.” Anyone needing to seek help should not hesitate to contact Beyondblue on 1300 22 4636.

Opinion THERE have been some seriously nasty developments in the aftermath of the fight to stop McDonald’s from opening in Tecoma in the Dandenong Ranges and protesters are driving local businesses to close. James Merlino, the Deputy Leader of the Labor Party and local MP has said, “I will back my community against McDonald’s in Tecoma.” What he should have said was that he backed a vocal minority in Tecoma at the cost of the silent majority and local businesses. He has been very active in his support for those protesting but he has done nothing to allay the fears of the local businesses that are suffering and going broke. Since the protests at the site have happened on a daily basis, some traders’ sales have dropped by as much as 80 per cent. Local small business owners that were not seen to support the anti-McDonald’s group have been verbally abused, intimidated, and boycotted by a number of their supporters. I understand that more than 90 per cent of people employed in the Dandenongs work for a small business and small businesses account for 96 per cent of all Victorian businesses. If Labor gets in, small business in Victoria will pay a heavy price. Laetitia Jones, Kalorama.

Call for ‘balance’ TO REPLACE the main tertiary provider in the region, Swinburne University and TAFE college, with a shopfront is indeed an ‘insult’ to us all as James Merlino was quoted, ‘Great deal on education’ (Mail, 21 October). Disappointing that The Mail chose to report the $2.25 million dollars to be spent on fobbing off the community with this non-solution while ignoring the empty Swinburne buildings on the hill. Labor’s consistent promise to re-open the entire campus if re-elected was totally ignored in this article. Instead Mr Merlino was apportioned the meagre one-word quote in the last paragraph. Could we have more balanced local political reporting over the next few weeks, please? Disappointing also to read the puerile dimin-

utives used by some letter writers over the last few weeks when referring to Mr Merlino. James Merlino is our democratically elected State Labor Member for Monbulk, the Deputy Leader of the Opposition and the Shadow Minister for Education. Regardless of political proclivities the use of such adolescent insults is diminishing to us all. Kathryn Nauta, Sherbrooke.

Quite a journey STATE elections are on us again and aspiring candidates are sitting member Brad Battin (Liberal) and Collin Ross (Labor). During his term of office Mr Battin has had three separate overseas trips to Japan, the United States and the United Kingdom, to gather knowledge and make friends for our benefit. The cost of these journeys was probably around thousands of dollars (taxpayers’ money) and one wonders if much of the information could not have been available via the internet? On one of his trips abroad, Mr Battin was invited to attend the International Democratic Union young leaders forum. His report on this event is readily available and it must be said reads well. But just what is the IDU? Well, to the writer, it appears to be a very generously funded ultra right-wing group of extremely well organised lobbyists. Among its founders were Baroness Maggie Thatcher whose pitiless, economic dry policies, in the interests of so-called reform, put many hundreds of thousands of British workers on the dole where they remained for decades. Other founding members included George Bush Snr, an American standing joke and German Chancellor Helmut Kohl, ultra right-wing statesman and the man responsible for German reunification, much to his credit. So despite the grandiose rhetoric and polished presentations of speakers at the conference, to the writer, underlying it all, is a barely concealed grasp for international domination and power the expansion and consolidation of the haves over the have-nots. Is this the policy of Gembrook MLA Brad Battin? It is interesting to note that chairman of the IDU is none other than John Howard, not everyone’s cup of tea! One recalls that when little Johnny was trea-

surer he ditched the policy price control commission; his rationale being that market competition would sort it all out. Not unpredictably businesses big and small all put their prices up and there they have remained ever since! So much for the IDU and its chairman. Do we really want to see the policies they espouse here in Gembrook? If not your vote becomes very important. John Dudley, Emerald.

Closure time THE northern end of Nobelius Street, Emerald, needs to be closed to through traffic at Stewart Road, which is the boundary between the Shires of Cardinia and Yarra Ranges, which I believe makes this a matter for the latter named Shire and the State Government through VicRoads involvement. This a matter of some urgency! The five residents of this section of Nobelius Street need to use it, as it is the only route for access and egress to their properties. The vast majority of vehicles accessing this section of Nobelius are using it as a short cut to access the Emerald Monbulk Road when heading in a northerly direction. The directive at either end of this section of the street placed, presumably by the Council, “Local Residents Only” appears to be observed more in its breach than its acceptance. The reasons as to why this section should be closed are numerous and this request is supported by those five residents as well as some residents of Butterfield Road and the Emerald Monbulk Road. Those reasons are as follows: 1. This end of Nobelius Street is a narrow, windy, unsealed road which is not suitable for the amount of traffic it carries. 2. The street is only 3.2 metres wide from gutter edge to gutter edge and in places those gutters are relatively deep 3. Oncoming traffic meeting in most of this street are forced to back up to enable vehicles to pass through. 4. The road is very dusty and residents are forced to keep all windows of their residences on the street side closed on dry days, particularly in the drier months of the year. 5. It is the dust issue that has caused adjoining residential properties to support this

request as a result of the impact of clouds of dust on their homes and in particular on their washing. 6. There is quite an incline over the last 400 metres of this street and speeds of nonresidents are often excessive which is both dangerous and makes the dust issue an even greater problem. 7. My wife and I have our three youngest grandchildren aged 6, 5 and 3 years respectively, stay or visit with us on a frequent basis and this street, as it is, is a dangerous thoroughfare. There are no footpaths or tracks and the steep gutters prevent small children from accessing the banks of the street when traffic approaches. There are also young children living at one residence. 8. Horse riders frequently access this section of Nobelius Street as part of a Paton’s Road, Uren Road and Stewart Road loop, again being compromised by excess traffic and the narrowness of the road. 9. In addition the road is frequented by pedestrians and cyclists often using this street as an access to the Butterfield Reserve and returning home from school. School children are not a morning concern as they seem to be transported in the excessive morning traffic. There is ample room for a turning circle at Stewart Road to enable traffic, such as waste collection vehicles to turn around. A locked gate with the CFA having access keys as has been done in areas such as Alpine Road in both Ferny Creek and The Basin, Hilton Road Sassafras and O’Connor’s Road in The Patch are but a few examples where this closure of access routes in the Shire have been undertaken successfully, so why not in Nobelius Street? We need this street to be closed off for the safety of all that use it; for the wellbeing of young children, school children, pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders and for the comfort and benefit of the residents who do not deserve to have a short cut route down this attractive, country lane turning it into a worrisome, potentially dangerous thoroughfare and dust bowl. Michael R. Day OAM Emerald.

Mar y’s labour of love By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM GIRLS’ education is a labour of love for Mater Christi College Principal Mary Fitz-Gerald. Ms Fitz-Gerald was honoured for her dedication and commitment to education when she was presented with a John Laing Professional Development Award last month. One of seven Victorian principals to be recognised, the award celebrates the work of school leaders who have made a significant contribution to the professional learning of their peers. Ms Fitz-Gerald is passionate about girls’ education and says that it is important to provide girls with strong female role models. “From their first day in a girls’ school, students witness other girls as leaders; as captain of the sports team, SRC leader, physics high achiever, drummer in the rock band of as the lead

role in the school production. “When girls consistently witness other girls as role models in all areas, they realise there is no limit to what girls can do.” Ms Fitz-Gerald says that girls’ schools give their students the opportunity to excel in a full range of activities without becoming distracted. She says this is due to the learning environment that girls’ schools provide. “By creating diverse learning environments, with less emphasis on competition as a driver for learning, girls are free to pursue the challenges on offer, whether academic, physical or social, in leadership, in sporting activities or in social justice and community activities.” She says the school consistently sees girls achieving personal success as a result of this philosophy. “The girls step up and become role models themselves. It creates a really beneficial learn- Mater Christi College Principal Mary Fitz-Gerald has received a John Laing ing environment.” Professional Development Award.

Police hunt for arsonists By JODIE SYMONDS and MELISSA MEEHAN LILYDALE children have been left without a playground after equipment in Melba Park burnt down overnight Thursday. Emergency services responded to a call at 5.40am to find the playground alight. Police are investigating. The fire caused thou-

sands of dollars’ worth of damage, but Lilydale CIU Detective Leading Senior Constable Bridget de Chirico told the Mail that the playground would be able to be repaired. Police had already responded to an attempted fire at Melba Park playground in the early hours of Monday morning. “There have been a num-

ber (of attempts) since early October,” Det de Chirico said. “These fires have been overnight usually, or in the early hours of the morning.” Police are calling for witnesses, and anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report www.crimestoppersvic. com.au.

A number of arson attacks on this play equipment are being investigated.

School pledge By MELISSA MEEHAN A NEW tech school will be established in the Yarra Ranges if the Labor Party wins the upcoming state election. While information as to exactly where and when is not yet available, State Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews announced last week that, if elected, his government would build 10 tech schools across Victoria. Tech schools would be established in the Gippsland, Bendigo, Ballarat, Geelong, Monash, Casey, Wyndham, Banyule, Yarra Ranges and Whittlesea regions. Focusing on local industries, they’ll be open to secondary school students from across their region. Based on the KIOSC Wantirna facility, Labor’s plan for tech schools is about bringing the discovery and development of skills closer to home and closer to the classroom, at an even younger age. “Under the Liberals, Victoria is in a youth unemployment crisis. “Liberal TAFE cuts have made it so much harder for kids to get skills, get a job and build a better life,” Mr Andrews said. “Tech schools are coming back, refined and reformed, because our kids deserve a head start in a hands-on profession. “We’ll open 10 tech schools across Victoria so today’s students can be tomorrow’s workers.” Ferntree Gully’s Labor candidate Matt Posetti celebrated the announcement. “Youth unemployment is at 15-year high, as much as 20 per cent in some pockets in the outer east. “Yet Napthine and his Minister for Higher Education and Skills Nick Wakeling are at the same time defunding the services that help out kids stay on a path from education into employment,” he said. “Over the past four years, the Napthine Government has cut $1.2 billion from TAFEs, has allowed Local Learning and Employment Networks (LLENs) to crumble, and has cut VCAL subsidies so that many Local Learning providers are shutting their doors.”

THEY were going so fast you may not have seen them, but a group of cyclists sped through Ferntree Gully last week for a special cause. The riders are taking part in the annual Paceline Ride, an event to raise awareness and funds for the issue of cardiac arrhythmias, or irregular heartbeats. The trip covers 1400 kilometres over eight days and will loop participants from Beaumaris through regional towns such as Yea, Wangaratta, Echuca, Hall’s Gap and then to the finish line at Queensbridge Square in Melbourne this Friday November 14.

Steve Quinn founded Paceline in 2003 after being diagnosed with atrial fibrillation and is the now the president of the charity. He says the ride aims to raise funds for vital research into the causes and treatments of cardiac arrhythmias and to raise community awareness about associated conditions. “There are people that think that an irregular heartbeat is an isolated condition, when in reality it can lead to much larger issues. “The number of people being hospitalised due to an irregular heartbeat is growing

at three times the rate of other heart problems.” Steve is encouraging Ferntree Gully residents of all ages to have a pulse test in order to pick up the condition before it becomes a more serious problem. “Close to one-in-five sufferers are unaware they have the condition, leaving them at risk of a potentially life-threatening stroke, heart failure or sudden death. “A simple pulse test can be the first step in detecting a heartbeat irregularity and could help save thousands of lives.” For more information or to donate to the ride, visit www. paceline.com.au.

Pitching in for Pritchard AFTER hearing about Tecoma Blind Cricketer Daniel Pritchard’s funding shortfall, Belgrave South Primary School students banded together to put on a fund-raiser for the Australian fast bowler to help him get to the World Cup. The hard work from the students saw them raise $457.10 from a single sausage sizzle. This significant donation from the school has enabled Pritchard to take part in the fourth One Day International World Cup in Cape Town, South Africa, later this month. “If it wasn’t for their overwhelming support, I would have had to withdraw,” Daniel said. “I’m still in the red, but their help has made the difference between me going and me sitting at the airport watching my teammates go without me.” The school presented Daniel with a cheque at an assembly on 20 October where Pritchard demonstrated just how difficult the game can be. “We blindfolded one of the students and made him field the ball up the front of the assembly. He kept kicking it away from him which caused the crowd to erupt with laughter,” Daniel said. “I love being able to get out there and show people that my blindness is not a disability but rather an endless possibility but I’m ashamed that as an Australian cricketer, I have to go around looking for handouts in order to compete.”

Monbulk MP James Merlino with members of the Destination Tecoma committee.

Tecoma plans are taking off By MELISSA MEEHAN

Pritchard accidently got involved with the school earlier this year during a bowling practice. “I was just down behind Upwey High School bowling in the nets when all of a sudden, all these Grade 6 students appeared out of nowhere. Within minutes, they all joined in trying to bowl

the ball underarm. I was amazed at how open-minded they were. I’ve walked past kids their age before with my cane and I certainly haven’t received the same reception.” Pritchard’s uniform arrives later this week and although he’s toured before, he is still looking forward to trying on his new “threads”.

THE weekend may have been wet and miserable, but spirits were high as Destination Tecoma was launched. Joined by Monbulk MP James Merlino, community groups, including Tecoma Traders Association, the Hills Food Frontier and Tecoma Village Action Group came together to discuss passion, plans and possibilities for their town. Destination Tecoma, a new community organisation, also attended. The group was born out of recent Yarra Ranges Council community forums held at the local primary school. Plans are already underway for the Tecoma Spring Carnival

which will be held on 7 November 2015. Organiser Bill Brindle said the Spring Carnival event would encompass the commercial shopping precinct, Tecoma Primary School and the Uniting Church. “This will be an inclusive event, which will celebrate all of the diversity and creativity that exists within Hills’ townships and makes them a special place to live,” Mr Brindle said. “An important part of this will involve partnering with local community organisations in order to celebrate their important role in maintaining the fabric of the community - young or old.” Mr Merlino said he was looking forward to the carnival.

“Destination Tecoma is about celebrating not only the entire township has to offer, but bringing together the unheralded volunteer groups that do so much in our community,” Mr Merlino said. The Spring Carnival will involve all age groups and included an art show, music, choirs buskers, hills craft, Irish and contemporary dance. Mr Brindle said expressions of interest were being sought from other groups within Tecoma. If you are interested in getting involved, contact destinationtecoma@yahoo.com or see www.facebook.com/destinationtecoma.

Held at the Emerald Arts Society Studio, the event received council funding this year to include a section of the exhibition for artists aged 19 years and younger. The ‘Next Generation Artist Award’ was won by Shenay McIntyre with her piece ‘Split Identity.’ Exhibition co-ordinator Kay Frith said that the show exposed the community to the work of local artists. “This annual exhibition provides an opportunity for members of the community and general public to view the range and variety of work created by local, established and aspiring arts practitioners.” More information on the Emerald Arts Society can be found at www.emeraldartssociety.wordpress.com

By JESSE GRAHAM THE chance to get up-closeand-personal with a living piece of Australian music history will be on offer through the hills this weekend, when Steve Kilbey takes to the stage. The frontman for 30-yearold band The Church, Kilbey will be performing at Burrinja and Montrose on Friday 14 and Saturday 15 November in two special solo shows, which will combine music - old and new - and written words. Kilbey told the Mail that visitors to the show could expect an intimate event with songs from The Church’s latest album - Further/Deeper - along with classics and readings from his recently released memoirs, Something Quite Peculiar. “It’s just me,” he said. “You gain and lose something if it’s The Church - you get the big bloody circus of The Church - with 10 roadies and 5000 guitars, you get all of that, but you don’t get any intimacy. “You can have me and have all the intimacy.” He said that, while he hasn’t performed in the Yarra Ranges before, he was looking forward to the show and exploring the hills, time permitting. “It really is a lovely area I’m looking forward to checking it out.” Both Kilbey and The Church have a strong standing in Australian music history, with The Church named by some as the greatest Australian songwriters of all time, and Kilbey becoming an inductee to the Australian Music

Steve Kilbey will be performing in Upwey and Montrose as part of his Australian tour this week. 130452 Picture: CONTRIBUTED Hall of Fame, with over 750 original songs penned through his career. He said that he got his first bass guitar at the age of 16 44 years ago - and was heavily influenced by The Beatles and David Bowie, something that reflected in his music. Now, 34 years after The Church was established, Kilbey said the influences remain, but are more subtly laid into songs. “I think that, as you get older and older, you start to combine your influences more subtly - a song alludes to David Bowie rather than directly

referencing him,” he said. “It took me a long time before I wrote a song that wasn’t blatantly anyone else.” “If you’re good enough, eventually you become more than your influences.” Steve Kilbey will be performing at Burrinja in Upwey on Friday 14 November and Montrose Town Centre on Saturday 15 November - both shows start at 8pm. Tickets to both shows are $33. For more information, visit ach.yarraranges.vic.gov.au, burrinja.org.au or call 1300 368 333.

great community relations this initiative, the brainchild of Wild Oak’s owner and chef Ben Higgs, was taken. “I heard about it on the radio the day before and immediately got on the phone to principal Mike Leonard,” Ben said. “I mean teachers are giving so much all of the time, it is nice for them to get a little

something in return. Twenty free lunches is the least we can do to say a quick thanks to the pillars of our community.” Mr Higgs says he is planning on running the initiative again next year, and might even sneak in dessert. National Teachers Day is held in Victoria on the last Friday of October each year.

Sprawled over three levels, this magnificent home has polished floorboards, stained glass windows, high ceilings, pressed metal on the walls and original fireplaces in all the bedrooms. The main living area is light filled and opens up on to two different entertaining areas and has water views from every angle. The galley kitchen has been built with practicality in mind and has garden views from every angle. You can cook up a storm with fresh ingredients from the garden or more than 20

fruit trees including apricot, plum, orange, quince, bananas, hazelnuts and pears. There are three bedrooms on the main level all with built-in wardrobes, a central bathroom with original pedestal basin and a cosy lounge/dining with another ornate fireplace. Upstairs is a room that lends itself to a study, home office, kids’ retreat or additional bedroom. Downstairs the secret spaces continue with a cellar, storage space and laundry. The grandiose wrap-around verandah with its intricate period features is the jewel in the crown.

PROPERTY OF THE WEEK

Sit, relax and soak up the sounds of nature on the doorstep with ample birdlife and the familiar sound of Puffing Billy in the distance. One of Selby’s earliest original homes, Maskells Lodge needs to be seen to be appreciated as words simply do not do this property justice. Homes like this come on the market once in a lifetime. Do not miss out on this slice of Selby history. For more information visit www.13maskellshillroad.com.

Six of the best YARRA Ranges Athletics welcomed Croydon Little Athletics to Morrison Reserve on Saturday morning for some friendly interclub competition. All athletes thoroughly enjoyed the day with the very warm weather contributing to some excellent results. It was great to see the comradery of athletics come through as all the athletes laughed and enjoyed the company of the visiting athletes. Larger fields produced much-needed competition for both clubs. The club looks forward to many more meetings with our local clubs whenever the opportunity arises. Yarra Ranges Athletics had

several athletes competing at the Victorian All Schools Track and Field Championships, held at Lakeside Stadium over the weekend. An opportunity to compete at one of Victoria’s largest sporting events and places in the team to represent Victoria at the Australian All Schools Championships produced some outstanding results for all our athletes. Six Yarra Ranges Athletics club members won their events to become Victorian All Schools Champions along with numerous other medallists. Congratulations to State champions Lucas Taylor (U20 5000m walk), Lateisha Willis (U15 90m Hurdles and 200m Hurdles), James Laven

(U15 2km Steeple), Jack Videon (U18 Long Jump), Ebonnie Twinning (U20 Triple Jump), Lily Peacock (U14 800m) and to all our other athletes competing, many of whom recorded personal bests. Full results will be available on our website as soon as possible. If you are interested in competing at the Region relays to be run at Doncaster on 23 November, contact Darren Ford asap. New members of all ages and abilities will always be welcomed at the club. Go to the website at www.yarrarangesathletics.org.au for more information, results and training times.

WITH the Big Yella doing its thing to warm the cockles of the hearts at Emerald Golf Club last Saturday, a gentle round of stableford was dished up at the main course. It was Ken Sumsion (27) who set to work with a will and dined out regally to come in with a whopping 46 points. This put him above all the other B Graders and over-all as well. He was heard to exercise his bragging rights with tempered modesty. A Grade saw Broc Reynolds (13) yet again salute the judges with his 41 points.

The unlucky player on the day was Peter Glasscock (18) who played with Sumsion and amassed 44 points of his own but won nothing. A number of players beat their handicaps, including David Aitken (30) with 41, John Carvill (18) 39, Ben Balfour (18) 39 while Graham White (15) and Conrad Whitlock (19) both had 36. Leigh Morison won the Stockdale and Leggo nearest the pin on the 4th, Glasscock the 7th, Mark Starick the 12th, White the 13th and Ross Martin pocketed the pro pin lollies on the 18th. Peter Clowes and Ross

Martin played off for the match play championship. After a titanic struggle, it was Clowes who triumphed 2/1. The ladies event saw Margaret Starick prove just too powerful for the rest for a win easing down. Wednesday’s Opulently Foppish Golf was a stroke event and it was Graeme Fergus who stole the show when he oozed in with a net 61. Ben Balfour and Bobby Kennedy came in next with 67 while Geoff Whittaker was next with 68. Next Saturday is a twoman ambrose event.

Kirsten Eakins placed first against 480 other competitors in the 33-kilometre event on 26 October, honouring the Diggers that fought for our country. Competitors took part in either the 15 or 33-kilometre event in a challenge that involved trekking through tough terrain. The challenging course raised money for teenagers between the ages of 12 and 17 with personal development skills, team building and to teach them about mateship. “The event is a good source of exercise and it’s for a good cause,” Ms Eakins said. “I know there are children that are disadvantaged so it’s also about raising awareness.” Ms Eakins said she completed the event in four and a half hours with her training partner from Drouin, Mark Lynch. “It was great to see people come from all over Melbourne,” “The volunteers were all really helpful and made sure no-one got lost, which could have been

Pair eyes next step By MELISSA MEEHAN KILSYTH calisthenics coach Kelly Egginton and her competition partner Amy Ellis, from Lysterfield, won a silver medal at the Pan Pacific Masters Games last week on the Gold Coast. Both women are coaches and competitors on the Masters Team at Joulle Calisthenics in Croydon North. “The Pan Pacs are held every two years,” Ms Egginton said. “Amy and I entered a duo in the under-35 section. “Based on our average age - me 29 and Amy 37 we had an average of 33.” The duo came second out of seven acts. All three medal places were Victorians. “The atmosphere was really friendly, supportive and encouraging,” she said. “From our personal experience, after we came off stage we received nothing but positivity and praise on our performance. It was so nice to hear that from people whom we were competing against.” Ms Egginton said that a lot of calisthenics clubs from across the country attended the Gold Coast event with their Masters Team, with a majority of these having team and duo event entries. “Amy and I decided to go up to Queensland and enter our duo independently, without our team from Joulle Calisthenics Academy Inc entering as well,” she said. “We can’t wait until 2016.” Over 13,000 participants from all over the world competed in the multi-sport event which has stamped itself on the calendar at the beginning of November every two years. The slogan of the Jupiters Pan Pacific Masters Games is ‘Play it, Live it, Love it!’ which encapsulates its competitive, participatory and social environment. Over 40 sports for the over-30s are on this year’s program with no qualifying standards or times required to enter. The only criteria is that participants meet the minimum age requirement for their respective sport, which for the majority is 30 years of age.

CHRIS Carlton won the Marysville nine-hole competition last week with 23 points and Brian Worcester was the runner-up with 21 points. Rob Richards won the nearest the pin on the 18th hole. On Saturday, in hot sunny conditions, players were reminded to be vigilant when a large snake was seen curled up near the 17th green. Those who had qualified for the Barton Cup final played a stroke round and the winner was Toolangi resident Willy Williams (21) with nett 68. The runner-up was David Stephen (17) from Croydon with 72. The daily winner was Steve Coker (23) with 68 on a countback from Coldstream member Sean Williams and his father Willy. The ladies also played a stroke round and the winner was Helen Howard (21) from Chirnside Park with nett 72 and Sabrina Stow (24) was the runner-up with 76. The nearest the pins were won by Nick Williamson, Alan Howard, David Stephen and Ray Jones who also won the golden shot. Alan Howard with 26 putts won the putting competition.

The Bears would have taken 7/323 at the start of the day as Best’s knock of 128 provided the backbone of what should be a winning total. It was a fine team effort by the home side with con-

tributions from Scott Vozzo (43), Ron Heskes (57) and Wayne Koster (33). Kyle Snyman toiled hard for the Panthers for a return of 3/54. Luke Scanlan fell agonisingly short of a ton as the Knoxfield Knights recorded a solid 208 against Johnson Park in the annual Mark Paffett Shield. Scanlan was dismissed for 96 as his opponent Martin Weightman bagged 5/50 in two stand-out performances for the day. It will take all hands on deck by the Sharks with the bat to retain the trophy. Upwey Tecoma recovered from the loss of three early wickets against Monbulk as 20-yearold Steve Moore blasted his first century in Reeves Shield. The Tigers ended the days play at 6/255 with the former Lysterfield skipper scoring 101 and ably supported by Jake Evans 52. Aaron Powell had the job of bowling uphill at Monbulk for most of the day to take 3/66. Belgrave at home to Ferntree Gully batted the day for 201 as Simon Hill (66) and John Levell (36) dug in against paceman Jarrod Bradley (5/48). Blues’ spinning all-rounder Josh Henry continued his good season with 4/41 as the Gully will be pushing to open their account next week.
