WORKING hard is in the DNA of Wandin couple Alex and Petra Prousialkas. And a sense of humour, is definitely in their make-up too. Alex and Petra celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last week and they plan to be together for a while yet. “I can’t get rid of her,” Alex jokes. “If I talk about going into a nursing home, she says she is coming too.” Petra came to Australia from Greece with her family in 1948 and Alex arrived six years later, as he recalls, single and looking for a better life. “To me, this is still paradise because I was very poor back in the old country,” he says. They met at the Richmond Town Hall dances and were married at the Greek Orthodox Church on 7 November 1954. They are proud of the life they have made here by working hard, raising two children, and sticking together through the ups and downs of life. Petra worked on the family farm on the morning of their wedding and well into her pregnancies, returning to work afternoon shift after the children were born. Alex worked picking grapes in South Australia and then at the Lucas battery factory. Ask them if, after 60 years, they have any advice to young couples starting out and Alex can’t resist. “You never think you’re going to live that long,” he says with a big, teasing grin. “He’s always joking,” says Petra. But marriage is no joking matter. “We love each other, and we work together for the same things,” she says. And Alex agrees. –Kath Gannaway

THE family of David Sinclair will have to wait until 2015 for the finding into his death two years ago. The second sitting of a Coronial Inquest into the tragic death of the 23-year old Warburton man, at Warburton on Saturday 1 June 2012, was held in Melbourne on Thursday 6 November. State Coroner Judge Ian Gray continued the inquest which on 3 June this year heard evidence that the cause of David’s death was mechanical asphyxia. David died after being tackled to the ground and pinned down by a 19-year-old man who told last week’s inquest he believed David to be the person he saw looking into his room through a window at a guest house where he and his girlfriend were staying. The first hearing heard evidence around the cause of death from forensic pathologist Dr Heinrich Bouwer and evidence from Yarra Ranges CIU Detective Senior Constable Paul Edyvane around the decision not to prosecute criminal charges in relation to the death. Thursday’s hearing introduced new witnesses, including police who were first on the scene, the 19-year-old and his then girlfriend, and the owner of the guest house. There was forensic questioning of the police witnesses around why no attempt was made to resuscitate David and of other witnesses as to how he was held on the ground and for how long, and of the 19-yearold who was asked by both the Sinclair family barrister Michelle Mykytowycz and Judge Gray, as to when he believed David had stopped moving.
“One of the concerns for Sinclair’s family is that they just want to understand what happened on that day,” Ms Mykytowycz said in questioning the 19-year-old. In response to questions about the decision not to perform CPR, the inquest heard from the police officers that from their reading of vital signs and other observations they believed David had been dead “for some time” and that CPR would have been to no avail. Judge Gray directed a number of questions at police around police training in CPR, particularly in relation to what factors come into play when officers are called on to make a decision as to whether or not to attempt resuscitation. The 19-year-old in response to questions about the way in which he was restraining David, said he felt he was using “an adequate amount of pressure” but said he did not believe it to be excessive. Judge Gray said he would allow two months for further submissions after transcripts of Thursday’s inquest were made available to all the parties. He said that in the course of his findings, should he consider the need to make any recommendations in relation to CPR there would be an opportunity for further submissions. In response to Judge Gray’s comment that he would keep an open mind as to whether he would call the matter back into court for the delivery of his findings, or, as he indicated, follow the normal procedure of advising by mail, David’s mother, Annette Sinclair, said she believed the findings into her son’s death should be delivered in the court. “I will keep fighting for justice for David,” she said.

Firey about-face for election date
it’s heating
By JESSE GRAHAM PRESUMPTIVE legislation to assist cancer-affected firefighters may be one step closer, after the Coalition last week announced its support - if it is re-elected this month. But while Yarra Ranges firefighters are cautiously optimistic, they are asking for more details and say the battle isn’t over. On Thursday 6 November, Deputy Premier Peter Ryan announced that, if the Coalition won the 29 November election, it would introduce presumptive legislation for firefighters. Presumptive legislation would mean that, if a firefighter was diagnosed with a specific type of cancer linked with firefighting within a specific timeframe, it would be automatically assumed they received it as a result of their work. Currently, firefighters in Victoria must prove that their cancer was developed as a result of their work, which may require firefighters to recall

specific incidents from over 10 years ago where they came into contact with toxins. Mr Ryan said the content of the legislation would be determined following the results of Monash University’s Australian Firefighters’ Health Study. “This is about providing certainty for Victoria’s hardworking firefighters and their families,” he said. Ferntree Gully CFA volunteer and District 13 president of Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria Bill Watson said he was waiting to see more details of the promised legislation before commenting further. “We’re monitoring it very carefully,” he said. Mr Watson said that, ideally, he would like to see presumptive legislation for all career and volunteer firefighters supported by both parties. Healesville resident and volunteer firefighter, Damien Beeby, said the announcement was a step forward, but that he was also awaiting more details. “It’s good, it is a start, but
Numbers down, but spirits up By JESSE GRAHAM IT WAS a day of thrills and not too many spills at Yarra Glen last week, when thousands of people flocked to the racecourse for the Melbourne Cup. But, while numbers were down on the races’ heyday, Yarra Valley Racing chief executive Brett Shambrook said the event had become sustainable and family friendly. More than 5000 people made their way through the gates at the Yarra Glen Racecourse on Tuesday 4 November for the Melbourne Cup event, and the venue was quickly a hive of activity. Bets were placed, local food and drink was consumed by happy race-goers, and the weather stayed comfortably warm as punters watched the event. Mr Shambrook said that entry numbers to the racecourse had dropped compared to 2009, when the racecourse was flooded, with more than10,000 people visiting the venue. But he said the change in numbers was also due to a number of measures put in place to kerb anti-social behaviour, such as excessive drinking. “We put in place measures over the last five to six years to stamp out unsociable behaviour and while that’s affected our crowds, maybe they’re not the kinds of people we wanted there anyway,” he said. He said that pickup was low for the racecourse’s new attraction for race day - a silent disco - but that overall he felt the day was family friendly, and that the races and the Fashions on the Field were well attended. “Obviously, the Fashions on the Field from year to year gets bigger and bigger - if you looked

around the crowd, it was a really well-dressed crowd,” he said. “As far as harness racing goes, this would be the biggest event in Australia for sure. “It appeared to me there was a genuine interest in the harness racing on-course.” The All British Vintage Car Club had cars on display at the racecourse, and over 150 people entered the Fashions on the Field competition decked out in their best spring racing clothes. One eye-catching fascinator, worn by competitor, Mooroolbark’s Katy Graham, was made with a teacup - matching a teacup-pattern dress. Lilydale’s Nicole De Ivlio won the ladies’ section in the competition, while Bradley Morgan won the men’s section. there is a lack of clarity,” he said. He said that VFBV members would continue to campaign for the legislation until it became law. The Mail contacted the Opposition with regard to the announcement, and was directed by a spokesperson to a Hansard statement by Shadow Minister for Police and Emergency Services Wade Noonan in June. The statement read that Labor supports the introduction of presumptive legislation for all firefighters. Federally employed firefighters and those in South Australia, Western Australia, the Northern Territory and Tasmania are already covered by presumptive legislation for 12 specific cancers. The government established a Firefighters Assessment Panel last year, after presumptive legislation was introduced by Greens MP Colleen Hartland, but voted down by Coalition MPs.

THREE people will front Ringwood Magistrates’ Court after Healesville police conducted raids across town late last month. Healesville’s Sergeant Stewart Thomson said that three locations in Healesville were raided by police on 23 October, with three people arrested. Sgt Thomson said that quantities of cannabis were seized from each location during the raids, which were run with officers from Croydon Divisional Tasking Unit. WOORI Yallock Primary School will benefit from $1 million in government funding if the Coalition is re-elected on 29 November, following an announcement last week. Education Minister Martin Dixon and Seymour MP and Eildon candidate Cindy McLeish visited the school on Monday 3 November to make the election pledge. Mr Dixon said that if the Coalition was re-elected in the Victorian election this month, the school would receive $1 million to upgrade their facilities.
The announcement was part of $3.8 million announced for schools in the Eildon electorate, with $2.8 million pledged to upgrade Mansfield Secondary College on the same day. Ms McLeish said the government had already delivered $2.3 million in capital funding for schools in the electorate, as well as $1.67 million in maintenance funding. “The Napthine Government is committed to funding this modern, high quality school infrastructure, and if elected, I look forward to working hard with the local schools here in Eildon to support our students and fami-

AN Upper Yarra pensioner said her worst fears were realised when she was scammed by computer hackers. The woman has asked that she not be identified, but wanted to warn others after falling prey to hackers claiming to be from Telstra. The woman, in her eighties, got an email alert on a Friday night saying that hackers had compromised her Big Pond account. When she contacted the sender she was given details that she believed were only known to Telstra, and other information that led her to believe the call was genuine. “Against my better judgement, I gave access to a credit card for a ‘once only’ $10 charge to cover five years,” she said. WARBURTON RSL has launched into some serious fund-raising to match a Federal Government grant for a WWI centenary memorial. Casey MP Tony Smith announced last week that the RSL would receive $5000 as part of a $41,435 Centenary of Anzac grants initiative in the Casey electorate. The Gallipoli Centenary Memorial Wall will be a mosaic memorial at the RSL featuring poppies, the words ‘Lest We Forget’, and a rosemary garden. RSL member and project co-ordinator Coral Reynolds is collaborating with Warburton’s renowned mosaic artist Sioux Dollman, who has worked on numerous local projects including the Great Steps of Warburton at the Waterwheel and the Wildlife Party wall at Yarra Junction Community Link. Ms Reynolds said the Memorial Wall was an exciting project for the RSL and for Warburton. The memorial will involve the wider community with school children, RSL members and community groups and individuals encouraged to take part in mosaic workshops as the project gets underway. The head’s support system of neck muscles and ligaments need to relax overnight. Unfortunately, the everyday pillow is too soft and doesn’t provide the level of support the neck needs, causing it to strain. This lack of ‘good sleep’ then contributes further to their pain cycle, and reduces the body’s ability to heal itself. If you are woken by pain or stiffness, then one of the easiest ways to help yourself is to make sure you have a good quality and correctly fitted mattress and pillow. This enables you to maintain the best possible posture overnight and provide a platform for ‘good sleep’ patterns and less pain.

stages of sleep, with the final phase being the well-known REM (rapid eye movement) deep sleep cycle. The human body cycles through these four phases in order over a 90-100 minute period, and repeats this over the course of a sleep. It is imperative that we reach REM sleep repeatedly overnight. Without it, you may experience muscular pain and fatigue, as well as reduced emotional resilience and other behavioural syndromes. From a musculoskeletal point of view, people with muscle tightness, disc injury or joint pain are often woken overnight due to inadequate or incorrect sleeping postures.

Candidates focus on ‘unsexy’ issue By KATH GANNAWAY LIBERAL, Labor and Greens candidates took on the ‘unsexy’ issue of homelessness and housing affordability in a pre-election candidates’ forum at Montrose last week. The meeting, organised by Yarra Ranges Housing Action Group (YRHAG) to raise awareness and inform both the public and political players in five outer-east electorates of Croydon, Eildon, Monbulk, Gembrook and Evelyn, highlighted the problems, and talked about possible solutions. Reducing, or doing away with stamp duty, free access to governmentowned land for social and public housing, utilising space on top of shopping centres and strip shops, mandating a
percentage of social/public housing in housing developments, increasing funding for emergency rent support, developing ‘village-like’ housing, introducing a land-tax to discourage land-banking, and changes to negative gearing, were some of the proposals put forward during the night. Lisa Stockheim, manager Housing and Support with Anchor Inc., Steve Staikos from Community Housing Federation of Victoria and Yarra Ranges mayor Fiona McAllister, laid the foundation for a representative of each of the participating parties to, first, put their party’s policy, and then answer questions from the floor. Mr Staikos said the housing, homelessness and family violence com-
munity sector organisations were crying out to both the Labor and Liberal parties to recognise the importance of affordable housing and particularly social housing for people on the lowest incomes. “There is a gross under-supply in all of Victoria, but particularly in the outer east of Melbourne and we are seeking innovative ways to address the crisis,” he said. He said there needed to be collaboration between government and notfor-profit organisations to address the issue together. Ms Stockheim spoke of the importance of supporting organisations. “More and more local agencies are supporting people to fill prescriptions,
buy fuel, fresh fruit and vegetables, provide hot meals, pay bills ... all these things that help them then put their money to paying their rent,” she said. Christine Fyffe (Liberal Member Evelyn), Sally Brennan (Labor candidate Eildon) and Mike Clark (Greens candidate Monbulk) spoke on behalf of their parties. Sandra Betts (Greens candidate Evelyn), Andrea Millsom (Greens candidate Eastern Victoria) and Peter Harris (Labor candidate Evelyn) also attended. Mr Clark identified the need for increased funding to reduce housing lists that he said at June 2010 had half a million people on waiting lists. He
called for new developments to include 20 per cent social housing and a scaling back of the Bushfire Management Overlay (BMO) to make housing more affordable in Yarra Ranges. Ms Brennan said a first priority for Labor would be to increase housing stocks, and agreed that the BMO was an issue in Eildon. She said cuts to funding for services that supported individuals - such as mental health and community legal services - jeopardised the capacity of low-income individuals and families to stay in housing. She said another initiative she would be pushing was to see a cap on 25 per cent of income for tenants in public housing.
New honour for the avenue

HEALESVILLE’S Avenue of Honour will be reinvigorated and re-dedicated with names of Diggers in time for next year’s Anzac centenary, following a funding announcement last week. Casey MP Tony Smith visited Healesville RSL on Thursday 6 November to announce $1000 in funding for signs to mark Healesville’s Avenue of Honour. Healesville RSL Commemorations Officer Bob Gannaway said the funding would be used for storyboard signs at either end of the Avenue of Honour which runs along Maroondah Highway from the BP Service Station down to Le Pine Funerals. He said the signs would feature names of soldiers from the Healesville RSL’s Honour Roll, and that the signs would be established in time for the centenary of Anzac Day on 25 April 2015. “Originally, they had separate bronze plaques at either side, but they’d been
dug up and lost years ago,” Mr Gannaway said. “Rather than try and re-create that, we’re doing a storyboard at each end.” He said the signs’ design and placement had yet to be decided, but the aim was to make sure they were eye-catching to drivers and passers-by. Mr Gannaway said the original Avenue of Honour ran down to HealesvilleYarra Glen Road, but that parts of it had been removed and only the one segment remained. “You’d be surprised at the amount of people who have lived here their whole lives and forgotten about the Avenue of Honour,” he said. “This is to regenerate that interest and that recognition.” Mr Smith said the sign funding came out of a local Anzac Centenary Committee, which assesses potential projects to fund in the lead-up to next year’s centenary.

He said the Avenue of Honour signs were an important way to re-engage people with the history of the town and the country, as the centenary of World War I drew closer. “Projects like this that 100 years on remember the local history are enduring, particularly for the younger generation to look at a storyboard and imagine those names as people walking the streets of Lilydale,” he said. “Investing in education for the centenary of Anzac is a great opportunity to capture that local history, for people to learn about it in the future.” An Avenue of Honour is an avenue of trees that commemorate those who have served in armed conflicts. Mr Gannaway said he would be discussing options for the signs with the Yarra Ranges Council and VicRoads, to ensure they were appropriately-sized and unobtrusive for drivers.

Connecting people and communities MVM
Letters Disappointing I AM writing to voice my disappointment in the lack of community spirit displayed over the weekend and the fact that instead of celebrating our wonderful town's 150th birthday in unity, the town was torn in two different directions. During Saturday’s 150th Community Street Parade it was great to see Wurundjeri People and the Taungurung People marching together. They did not lead the parade as different indigenous communities: rather they led the parade as one community. My family has lived in Healesville for over 100 years and instead of doing what our forefathers would have done and come together, put differences aside, including politics and celebrate as one we had protests, political statements and a distinct division between the Heritage Festival participants in the parade and those organised by the 150th Committee. Our town's history is timber and as such they should have played a larger role rather than be separated from the main parade. I have no problems with the environment group marching as all groups should be welcome but to sprout a political message for their campaign is unacceptable for a community celebration. Furthermore environmentalists protesting and attacking our town's history during our 150th birthday is outright disgusting. All political differences should have been put aside and we should have come together in unity but instead the railway held their own Heritage Festival under the guise of the 150th Celebrations. Meanwhile the 150th Committee seemed to deliberately forget about our town's true heritage and history which was built on the timber industry and has for generations supported the community. It should not have been about one or the other but about unity and celebrating everything I love about our beautiful town. I have been on many show/festival committees and know a lot of work was put in by a lot of volunteers and the parade was enjoyed. The schoolchildren, community groups and emergency services that are the grassroots of our community were outstanding and hats off to those that turned up with the community spirit and had people cheering ... even though I did miss Healesville’s famous baton twirlers of the past. For me the weekend was a tale of two towns,
- Cellar Door - Award winning wines - Lunch & Dinner
which is an absolute shame as it should have been about looking back, coming together and moving forward as one community. Kersten Gentle, Healesville.
Why close it? WHY has the current State Government closed this magnificent educational resource? The Toolangi Forest Discovery Centre was abruptly closed in 2012 and remains neglected. For some 20 years this edifice has provided the starting point and inspiration for a day in the forest for several thousand students annually. Programs were tailor-made for individual schools, be they primary, secondary or tertiary. The fact that schools returned year after year was testimony to the value of these experiences. Education does not make money, in fact there is a cost. But the benefits in helping young people today to appreciate, understand and utilise the natural environment more than justifies the expense. It is a forlorn sight to see this architect designed unique structure, in the form of a hovering bird, abandoned and imprisoned behind a wire fence. What a waste! Ian Whitford, Steels Creek.
Firing back IN RESPONSE to the letter to the editor (Mail, 4 November) by Sally Brennan, Labor Candidate for Eildon - Election Fires Up. The Napthine Government has a proven and strong commitment to supporting the CFA and its firefighters who play a critical role in Victoria’s emergency response: The Coalition are well on our way to meet commitments to build or upgrade 250 CFA stations, with 245 now complete. The Coalition Government has provided unprecedented funding for the CFA, with more than $2.29 billion since coming to office. This financial year the CFA budget is $457 million, $58 million more than it was when Labor left office, and in addition to millions of dollars of station upgrades, the Coalition has also invested more than $108 million to purchase 275
CFA trucks. The Coalition Government’s significant investments in Victoria’s fire services and the broad suite of emergency management reforms that have been introduced over the past four years have helped to ensure Victoria is now better protected. The facts: - Under a Napthine Government there have NEVER been funding cuts to the MFB or CFA. - Victorian firefighters continue to be the best resourced and funded in Australia. - The 2014-'15 budget for the CFA is $457 million, $58 million more than under the last Labor Budget. . The 2014-'15 budget for the MFB is $326 million, $39 million more than under the last Labor Budget. - Since coming to office the Coalition has invested more than $108 million to purchase 275 fire trucks for CFA; and - The Coalition is on track to fulfil our commitment to build or upgrade 250 CFA stations by November 2014, as part of a $125 million investment. A bit more than funding bits and pieces. Jim Child, Nationals candidate for Eildon.
Echuca Regional Hospital services an approximate population of just 20,000 including Echuca and Moama while Bendigo Hospital has an approximate population of 111,000 in the region. Yet the Shire of Yarra Ranges has a population of 144,500 (not even including Croydon, Ringwood, Warrandyte etc) and we are all expected to make the drive to Ringwood. I am the father of three young daughters and a full-time dad and have had numerous discussions with parenting friends and we all agree how backwards this scenario is. The area has grown due to shire amalgamations and population growth and would like to attract overnight tourists yet the only hospital is between a 30-minute and an hour and half drive away in Ringwood on winding roads in a suburb that local people have no affinity for. At the state election on 29 November I will be voting for the party which will genuinely be looking at opening the Healesville or Warburton hospital (even if it just be a feasibility study). Come on, let’s get discussion on our own hospital happening again at this state election. Dustin Pearson, Warburton.
It's time for health
Bald thanks
I HAVE just moved back to the Upper Yarra Valley (where I grew up) after 14 years, having lived in Bendigo and surrounds and Echuca since 2000. This time around I have my own family. The biggest changes since then have obviously been population and tourism growth, which one can understand entirely with the amazing beauty of our region. However strangely the hospital situation has declined. Warburton is completely closed and Healesville a shadow of itself with no emergency or birth amenities anymore. So we now have the situation where in an emergency or birth and you live between Yarra Glen, East Warburton or Upwey or in that triangle it will mean you have to drive to Maroondah Hospital. Now by taking the nostalgia of having a hospital we could call our 'own’ such as Healesville out of the equation, I referred to Wikipedia and the 2011 Census and discerned some facts (aside from emotion).
HEARTFELT thanks to all who have supported myself and, thus, the Yarra Valley Ladies in Pink - Women’s Cancer Support Group, for the ongoing work in providing free of charge both respite care and holidays at Heather’s Haven. We offer this service to anyone affected by cancer - patients, families, carers and friends and medical teams working with those in their care. The response has been overwhelming and far exceeded my expectations, with very many individuals too numerous to name contributing to the grand total to date of close on $5,500. Being almost bald has been well and truly worth it and again I say a big thankyou to all concerned with special thanks to all at IGA and Bendigo Bank Seville and the Yarra Junction Community Op Shop. Bless each and every one. Judith McGrath, Yarra Valley Ladies in Pink

IT’S been a while since the Yarra Junction railway station took passengers, but for generations of locals, it was a life-blood transport link for people and industry. The old station, now the Upper Yarra Museum, will be flooded with people and memories on Sunday, 16 November, for the Back To Yarra Junction. The event was sparked by the Yarra Junction History Book Project which will see a history of Yarra Junction, in words and pictures, published in 2016. While the museum covers the entire Upper Yarra, on Sunday, the focus will be very much on the memories, anecdotes and memorabilia of Yarra Junction. The history book team of Frank Colverson, Tom O’Meara, Jim Child, Paul Hill, Kate Lamb and Warren Thomas, are looking forward to catching up with people from past generations to the present day for a great day of sharing everything from photos to a snag on the barbecue, or a leisurely cuppa. “It will be a great day for people to catch up with old friends, share memories and help us make the book a great history of the town and its people,” historical society president Tom O’Meara said. It’s not all about old memories however. It is also about making memories and there will be lots of things happen-
History buffs, Tiani Zia-Kane sporting a 1951 Yarra Junction Cricket Club cap, Rhonda Simmonds with a Shire Centenary T-shirt and Frank Colverson with a 1994 shire Picture: KATH GANNAWAY sign. 130375 ing between 10am and late, including children’s activities, the blacksmith’s forge, a barbecue, ice-cream and light refreshments. And there is room after room of the displays and collections of historical memorabilia that make the museum one of the most interesting in the region. The history book team is asking people to have a peruse of old photo albums, a fossick
in forgotten boxes and a bit of a scavenge in drawers to see what can be uncovered for the book. Photographs and documents can be scanned and returned on the day. Phone Tom O’Meara on 0427 707 703 or Frank Colverson on 0409 671 221 for further information on the Back To Yarra Junction, and on the Yarra Junction History Book.

Fun with gay abandon Pride Starring: Ben Schnetzer, Imelda Staunton, Paddy Considine, Bill Nighy Rated M for mature themes, coarse language, sexual references and brief nudity PRIDE is one of the queerer films based on a true story to come out (puns intended) in a while. During the UK miners’ strike, caused by Margaret Thatcher’s crackdown on the unions, members of the London gay community decide to pledge their support to a struggling Welsh village. Pride is often tremendously funny while still being poignant and touching, and derives tension from the tug-of-war of public opinion. It succeeds in being uplifting, charming and very gay-positive without being patronising, as issues affecting gay people then and now - preju-

dice, moral panic, coming out and HIV - are not avoided but rather confronted head-on. The struggle toward gay rights and acceptance is fully realised in this film, but so is the unexpected hope. The only significant problem with Pride is the character of “Bromley” (George MacKay), a closeted young gay man and the group’s photographer, whose inclusion may have been a mistake. Bromley was invented as an audience surrogate character (someone who represents the viewer), but he tends to fade into the background. More importantly, even if you’re straight, if you know gay people and support gay rights, then you don’t need an audience surrogate character to engage and invest yourself in the drama. Overall, Pride is an inspiring film about solidarity and the joy of finding kinship in places you wouldn’t expect. –Seth Hynes

some of the bands taking the stage for the event. Mr Johnston said that musicians at the festival hailed from a range of different genres, and urged anyone passionate about music to attend. HEALESVILLE’S 150th weekend of events may have drawn to a close, but the celebrations are far from over, with the annual Healesville Music Festival warming up on Friday and Saturday. The festival begins officially with an event at the Memo on Friday 14 November, before a day and night of performances on Saturday. Altogether, 19 bands and musicians will be performing over the weekend at the Healesville RSL, the Terminus Hotel, Mocha and Lime and the Memo. Healesville Music Festival publicity officer David Johnston said he was ‘pumped’ for the weekend, and that musicians gave the town a preview of the event during the 150th street parade on Saturday 8 November, performing on the back of a float in a manner not too dissimilar to AC/DC though the sound may have differed. He said that, while some of the bands performing at the festival may not be wellknown by name, festival-goers can trust that the event offered a “100 per cent quality bill”. “When people walk along and sees a poster and says “well, I haven’t heard any of them”, that’s part of what we like doing,” he said. “The idea of the festival is that people immerse themselves into the festival and trust that we have put on a bill that is top quality but varied.” “We’re confident that every single act, in their own way, will be interesting and enjoyable.” Three Kings, the Little Stevies, Liz Stringer and the Dukes of Despair are just

All the right Levers YVCA AFTER last week’s on-again offagain day with the rain, cricketers around the Yarra Valley were greeted with blue skies and hot conditions - and they didn’t disappoint the spectators as intriguing battles between bat and ball ensued. Making big scores is going to be key to team success this season as early indications are that teams possess the potential to amass such scores - but the batsmen’s temperaments haven’t matched this potential and thus far we haven’t seen a ‘big one’. This was until this round as Warburton-Millgrove made hay while the sun shone as they all but batted the day out against Mount Evelyn at the picturesque Mac Sparke Oval. The Burras didn’t hesitate in batting, and opener Ben Lever was the man who broke the shackles for the under-performing batsmen around the association. In an innings that wound the clock back to days gone by, Lever cautiously built his innings against some probing Rover’s bowling. After absorbing the best that Mount Evelyn could offer, Lever’s innings accelerated at the right time for the Burras to attack a score beyond 300. With the support of Scott Ablitt (37) and David Lever (29), the Burras looked well on track at 2/216 with 14 overs remaining against a tiring attack. The visitors had battled manfully in tough conditions and managed a fightback of their own as they managed to eke out the Lever boys, Ben the last for a masterful 135, and managed to run through the Burras’middle to lower order to restrict, and eventually dismiss the Burras for 274. Although relatively happy with the final score, the Burras would be disappointed not to have batted the Rovers completely out of this contest with a score well beyond 300. Mount Evelyn have their work cut out with the bat, however the total is achievable if their batsmen show the same application as Warburton-Millgrove’s top order. The match of the round would have to be the battle between two of the association’s most talented young line-ups. Yarra Junction and Woori Yallock, both beaten finalists in 2013/14, will be looking to take another step this season on the bag of some of the brightest new talent in the competition. Yarra Junction opened the game with the bat and struggled to match the speed and accuracy of one the best new bowling pairs in Jackson Wright and Simon Young. The speed of Wright troubled the
Eagles with his good form continuing with figures of 5/40. Just as the Tigers looked to have busted Yarra Junction’s innings wide open, Eagles captain Quinton Hodgkinson (78) was joined by Pat Ford (51) and the pair systematically repaired the innings to a point where the Tiger’s were nearly bereft of options as the pair looked as if they were going to push the score beyond 200. Unfortunately for the visitors, the pair were the only batsmen of substance, and with their dismissals, the innings was quickly tidied away for 191. Woori Yallock then made the most of their limited time at the crease quickly pushing the score to 46 without the fall of a wicket. Woori Yallock has established the best possible foundation to chase the moderate score, however this isn’t the first time this season the side has found itself in this position - and the last time didn’t end in success. Yarra Junction possesses an attack that will keep the Tigers honest all day, and any lapses in concentration will result in dismissals, however one thinks 191 will be short as the Tigers will be keen not to lose another game from this position. In the final game of the round, Seville hosted Healesville in a game that both sides needed to win to gain some momentum for the season Seville has endured rain and byes affecting their time in the middle, while Healesville recorded their first victory of the season two weeks ago. Healesville, with the washout last week, must start putting more wins on the board if it is to keep pace. As mentioned, batting is going to be the key this season, and Seville had a crack first and highlighted the challenges faced by batting sides. Adam Burns made the most of the early proceeding and put together a well made half-century, however the difference between this innings, and that of Warburton’s is that Burns couldn’t kick on like Lever and his dismissal just after raising his bat saw the home side struggle to muster any momentum of significance against a dour Bloods attack. No other batsman could contribute another half-century, and - despite a handy 37 not out from Matt Tilney - the Blues would’ve been disappointed to be dismissed for 189 giving the visitors a manageable chase and a sniff of victory against the highly favoured reigning premiers. Spinner Scott Hamer (3/41) was the pick of the bowlers in an attack that toiled well for their wickets. As so often is the case against Seville, the home side relished the short stint that Healesville had to
bat, and quickly had the visitors in all sorts of trouble having the Bloods teetering at 3/23 at the close of play. One would think that with Seville’s bowling line-up, the Bloods will have trouble chasing this target, however they do have the luxury of the week to re-focus and set their goals in achieving the target.
