GEELONG’S new floating Christmas tree will become one of the tallest structures along the city’s waterfront, secret photographs reveal. The Independent this week obtained a sneak peak of the fabulous addition to the bay as it was being prepared for next Friday’s official launch. The pictures show the 25-metre-high tree being assembled in three main parts at a secret location where workers are applying the finishing touches. The tree, which will cost ratepayers $320,000, features 10,000 moving and shimmering kinetic discs covering its exterior. The tree has been decorated with stars ranging in sizes from 1m to 3m. A giant star on top spans 3.8m. Mayor Darryn Lyons said he was “a bit disappointed” the tree had been revealed before its official launch next Friday evening. “I want it to be a big Christmas surprise,” Cr Lyons said. “It’s been talked about a lot, so there are great expectations around Geelong, Australia and indeed the world, so perhaps it was bound to happen. “There has been a tremendous amount of interest, so I hope the early revelation will spark even more excitement. “As great as it looks in the daytime, people should be there for the big switch-on. It’s going to look a lot different next Friday evening.” Cr Lyons said the tree would “reflect nature’s beauty” during the day but would come into its own at night with a “totally different sphere of smart lighting technology”. “This will be a global beacon and if you’re not there you will miss history,” he said. “I really would like all the kids to come out and have a look. There’ll be loads of surprises for the kids on the night because Christmas is all about the kids.” Cr Lyons said the tree would “come alive” in a spectacular light show at 8.30pm. Continued page 2

to 11 was a thunderous editorial that threw self-awareness to the wind and declared: "We are not zombies". Just as well. Zombies need brains to eat, after all. THE GLOVES are well and truly off in the state election campaign, with coalition media releases as much about criticising Labor as they are trumpeting the Napthine Government’s achievements. The latest argy bargy is over the coalition’s East West Link versus Labor’s Westgate Distributor. Roads minister Terry Mulder accused the opposition of fudging a project that “could take years”.

He must have forgotten that the western section of East West Link is scheduled for completion in 2019, a scant five years away. THE INDY'S story last week on Geelong paediatrician Paddy Dewan criticising the use of Melbourne surgeons at Geelong's public hospital drew some interesting feedback from readers. Particularly revealing was the now-hidden post of one reader below a link to the story on the Indy's Facebook page, with a picture of Paddy above. "Stephen," typed the poster, "this is the dude that did your circimsisam (sic)." A cutting comment, for sure.

DESPITE a looming state election, random outbreaks of violence and other outrageous local misfortunes, the big talking point in Geelong over the past week was... zombies. Their starring role with Mayor Darryn Lyons as some type of post-apocalyptic saviour cowboy in the local tourism authority's new promotional video, The Tale of Sleepy Hollow, set social media and newspaper columns ablaze. Praise, wonderment, mockery and scorn flowed in thick measure as many passed judgement on the controversial twominute, 15-second You Tube clip. But turning the absurdity up

‘Whole suburbs’ at risk of succumbing to drug

In brief

Ice call-outs spiral up

Woman dies

By PAUL MILLAR ICE-RELATED emergency ambulance call-outs have spiralled in Geelong, with a state union leader warning the drug could take hold of entire suburbs. Steve McGhie, the state secretary of the Ambulance Employees Union, said Geelong was a problem area needing a show of leadership. Statistics show the greater Geelong area had the highest rate of ambulance call-outs for ice-influenced calls in regional Victoria. “There has been a huge increase in the Geelong area,” Mr McGhie said. “It’s taking up a lot of time for paramedics and it’s dangerous dealing

with these people - they can lose total control and they became so aggressive, women as well as men.” Turning Point, part of an International Network of Drug Treatment and Rehabilitation Resource Centres, revealed that Geelong also had the highest rate of call-outs in regional Victo-

ria in 2012/2013 for heroin overdoses. Police and community leaders believe that the growing rise of cheap and available ice - and a consequent increase in crime - is one of the city’s biggest problems. “The effects of this drug damage not only the users, but also families,’’ Mr McGhie said. “It can take control of whole suburbs, communities need to get involved. We have to work together. “It’s a community issue and the community has to deal with it.’’ A coalition of communities will today launch a year-long campaign to tackle the problem. Our Town’s Ice Fight Geelong project manager Senior Sergeant Anthony

Francis said the city was “coming together on this”. “Everybody knows how bad it is and the trauma associated with it, now we need to do something,’’ he said. Snr Sgt Francis said he had heard enough horror stories linked to the drug. “This is the first community that is doing something about it,’’ Sen Sgt Francis said. The group, involving up to 60 individuals and representatives from across the region, aims to raise awareness and implement prevention strategies. The year of action campaign will be launched at Cunningham Pier between 1pm and 4pm today.

A BURWOOD woman has died after her vehicle hit a tree on the Great Ocean Road at Eastern View. Police said the 25-year-old apparently lost control before leaving the road on her way toward Lorne.

Cow attacks A STRAY cow has injured a man after charging him at Hamlyn Heights. Police and paramedics said the escaped cow struck the man in his 50s on Sunday afternoon, leaving him hospitalised with serious injuries.

Lib quits A MAN with links to a neo-Nazi group has quit as a Liberal party campaign staff member in Geelong. Media reports this week revealed Scott Harrison had been a member of a white supremacist movement but had since renounced the organisation and its beliefs.

Storages falling THE REGION’S water storages have continued declining as a dry spring persists in the region. Barwon Water recorded the storages at 78.8 per cent of capacity this week, down from a 2014 high of 84.6 per cent at the start of September.

Jobs building OVER 350 jobs are about to begin as work gets underway on a new residential development on Geelong’s western doorstep, according to the company behind the project. ICD Property said construction of Gen Fyansford would begin today, creating 76 full-time jobs and 269 indirectly over the next 10 years.

Hub studied A FEASIBILITY study for a “fresh food hub” in Geelong is seeking industry feedback. Deakin University said it was seeking industry input so the study could “better understand” the opportunity for the hub, which would be a central facility for storing, processing, distributing and marketing local produce.

City windows beginning to look a lot like Christmas CENTRAL Geelong traders are beginning to dress up their windows with festive spirit as the Christmas shopping season approaches. Fyans Cottage is one of the latest to add a creative splash, while Myer will open its first Geelong Christmas windows display at 5.30pm today. The Independent and Central Geelong Marketing have joined forces this year to encourage all traders

in the city centre to give their windows a touch of Christmas. The Independent is offering a $1000 advertising package as a weekly prize for the best window, as judged by readers. Traders are invited to contact the Independent to have pictures of their windows posted to the paper’s Facebook page, where the number of ‘likes’ for each entry will determine

the winner of the weekly prizes. Mayor Darryn Lyons will choose an overall winner, who will receive a $2500 advertising package from the Independent. Tony Galpin, the managing editor of the Independent, urged traders to get into the spirit of Christmas. “With the giant floating Christmas tree and Myer’s windows, this season is going to be the biggest yet

in Geelong,” he said. “Make sure you help spread the spirit and show that Geelong’s number-one for Christmas this year.” Central Geelong traders can alert the Independent to their Christmas windows by phoning 5249 6700, emailing editorial@geelongindependent.com, posting at Facebook.com/ GeelongIndependent or tweeting @ GeelongIndy.

FIGHTING THE SYSTEM: Lawyer Danny Connor and workplace accident victim Gary Jolly want change at Picture: Reg Ryan WorkCover. 130279

Crush victim’s compo ordeal By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A FORMER toolmaker whose hand was crushed in a workplace accident says the WorkCover system should change, ahead of the authority relocating to Geelong. East Geelong’s Gary Jolly was recently awarded $120,000 after a protracted battle with Victorian WorkCover Authority (VWA). “The system doesn’t work,” Mr Jolly said. “At least they should negotiate instead of just refusing to listen to people who have workplace accidents.” Both main political parties have promised to relocate the VWA to Geelong to join the TAC in a “centre of excellence” for injury prevention and rehabilitation. Mr Jolly was carrying out maintenance on a press machine at IXL Metal Castings in November 2008 when a 70kg metal die suddenly dropped due to a faulty

safety bolt, crushing his right hand and fracturing three fingers. “It saddens me that I was forced to go to trial to fight for compensation six years after my accident,” Mr Jolly said. “All along I didn’t think I had done anything wrong. The allegation that I’d contributed to the accident because I was negligent was hurtful. “I spent three days on the witness stand defending myself. They put surveillance on me all the time, at home and whenever I went out. “But knowing you’re right makes you determined. It was massive pressure because they’re trying to trip you up - it’s character assassination.” Slater and Gordon WorkCover lawyer Danny Connor said the case should never have gone to court. “Mr Jolly was a hard-working employee with nearly 50 years’

experience as a toolmaker. He was very safety conscious,” Mr Connor said. “The lawyers acting for the employer refused to negotiate a reasonable settlement forcing Mr Jolly to run his case at court.” Mr Connor said the VWA offered no compensation initially and could later have settled for around $30,000 but refused that counter offer. “The jury heard evidence that his former employee was negligent because it failed to comply with an occupational health and safety policy requiring a secondary safety system be installed on the machine. If it had, the accident would not have occurred.” Mr Jolly said he would have been unable to fight the case without legal support but advised others in similar situations to battle the system. “Tell the truth and be determined,” he said.

Grand Lakes Estate, Lara

Bisinella celebrates 50 years in business Lino Bisinella has been creating jobs in the Geelong region for 50 years. A plasterer by trade, Lino was working for himself by the age of 19 and took on his first full time employee in October 1964. A decade later, the enterprising post-war migrant was employing a workforce of more than 40 at his plasterboard factory in Heales Road, Corio. So began the business that has grown and diversified into Bisinella Developments as we know it today…the region’s largest local land development company. Bisinella Developments is currently working on six residential estates in Lara and Curlewis

with a total of more than 1600 lots. The company also develops industrial land and custom builds factories and warehouses. It owns, leases and manages industrial facilities totalling more than 100,000 square metres and is developing a new 40 hectare industrial estate at Corio in the Geelong Ring Road Employment Precinct. Lino Bisinella has always strongly supported Geelong contractors and their workers, generating thousands of direct and indirect jobs over the years. Fifty years on, Lino remains at the helm of a family business focused on investing in the Geelong region, employing local people and contributing to his community.

The key to your community… Bisinella Developments plans, designs and develops residential communities in the Geelong region. We set high standards for our estates. We take pride in the community infrastructure we build. And we strive to provide exceptional service and assistance to our customers. If you buy a block of land and build your new home in a Bisinella estate, we like to think of ourselves as the key that opened the door to your new community.

…and our economy Bisinella Developments - like two out of three businesses in Australia - is a family business. Small, medium or large, family businesses employ more than half the national workforce. In the City of Greater Geelong, that’s an estimated 10,000 family businesses. A Senate Inquiry last year identified a number of attributes common to many family businesses: • • • • •

Lino and Marina Bisinella’s four children – Richard (right), Michelle, Matthew (back centre) and Bernard – work in the business along with Lino’s nephew Mick (back left).

Stabbing, shooting rock north By PAUL MILLAR A COUPLE faced court yesterday over the stabbing murder of a Norlane mother of three in her home. They fronted court as police scanned CCTV images for clues after shots were fired near a busy intersection during a separate incident two days later in Gee-

long’s northern suburbs. Luke Berg, 28 and Alicia Schiller, 25, made a brief appearance in Geelong Magistrate’s Court charged with killing Tyrelle Evertsen-Mostert in her Ibis Crt home on Sunday night. Both were charged with one count of murder. They will face a committal mention hearing on 20 March.

Police said they were reviewing the CCTV footage in a bid to work out who fired at least three shots following a dispute between two parties on Melbourne Rd just after 3pm Tuesday. Police believed that the shots were fired after a row outside a Shell service station, adjacent to the Ford factory. “During the altercation it’s believed

one of the males in the group has produced and discharged a firearm, a Victoria Police spokeswoman said. “A short time later a further altercation took place between one of the men in the group and the unknown victim on Melbourne Rd near The Boulevard where a firearm was discharged once again. A bullet hit a side window of a Gee-

long Locksmiths van during the incident, possibly by crossfire. Police said the van’s innocent driver, a worker in his 30s, was shocked but unhurt. Police urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or to submit a confidential report at crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Restriction fears over port access

$412m projects ‘await support’

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN

THE REGION’S two biggest road projects have yet to earn state opposition backing, according to Liberal MPs. State Transport and Roads Minister Terry Mulder and federal Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson called on Labor to “clarify its support for the Great Ocean Road upgrade and the Princes Hwy duplication. The projects have combined coalition state and federal funding commitments of $412 million. “The Princes Highway carries more than 6500 vehicles a day and the Great Ocean Road can attract up to 16,000 vehicles a day in the peak holiday season, Mr Mulder said “Local residents have been calling for these road upgrades for years and the benefits are just over the horizon. I personally signed agreements for these projects to be delivered into the south-west. “We have already seen Labor leader, Daniel Andrews, recklessly promise to rip up the East West Link contracts and refuse to support the Country Roads and Bridges Program. Labor needs to come clean on whether they’ll also abandon the Princes Highway duplication and the Great Ocean Road upgrade. Ms Henderson said Labor must join the federal and state governments by committing to these projects. “Labor has had every opportunity to commit to these projects yet they have failed to do so, leaving local residents in the dark, she said. The state opposition had not responded to the Independent’s request for comment before the paper went to press.

PRIVATISING the Port of Melbourne could end up restricting access to Geelong’s port, according to Committee for Geelong chief Rebecca Casson. Ms Casson said ensuring privatisation did not extend to controlling the access channels from Port Phillip Bay heads was essential. “The new Port of Melbourne owner must not be allowed to control access to the heads of Port Phillip Bay," she said. “It is conceivable a private operator would prioritise access to the Port of Melbourne over the Port of Geelong. It is clear that users of the Port of Geelong broadly support the privatisation of the Port of Melbourne and expect shared channel access and fee setting to be conducted transparently, fairly and with clear guidelines. “We believe control and revenue from Geelong channels must remain with a Geelong-based entity, while ready access to the shared channel remains a priority. Ms Casson was worried about the impact on Geelong of the privatisation, which both major parties supported. She said she had approached Premier Denis Napthine and opposition leader Daniel Andrews to express the committee's concerns. “Interstate there is a strong view that services have suffered as a result of channel management being privatised and that healthy competition has suffered. Private control of channels may also jeopardise the development of a new port - either Bay West or Hastings - as a private operator may seek to suppress competition, Ms Casson said.

OSCAR-WINNING actress Kate Winslet is taking the You Yangs to the big screen, filming The Dressmaker with Aussie actress Judy Davis at the increasingly-popular Little River movie site. Winslet plays the role of a 1950s dressmaker who returns to her hometown seeking vengeance on locals who mistreated her years before, causing her to flee amid accusations of murder. Director Jocelyn Moorehouse has adapted the movie from a Rosalie Ham novel, describing the story as “Unforgiven with a sewing machine”. Zombie storm their Zombies ‘mission’ everywhere

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN

THE CREATORS of Geelong's controversial A Tale of Sleepy Hollow tourism video expected the storm it created. Director Ryan Chamley, of Robot Army Productions, said he had been prepared for a mixed response. “We had a fair idea of what was coming and that some would take it literally, Mr Chamley said. “We knew we may offend some people but if it gets people outside Geelong talking and Googling the region to come and visit, then mission accomplished. The video premiered late last week, showing Mayor Darryn Lyons striking Malop St with a staff, unleashing a wave of colour that transforms Geelong's zombie-like population. The premiere inspired hundreds of social media posts with responses. Most posts on the Independent's Facebook page supported the video but some called it “crap and a waste of money. Tourism Greater Geelong and The Bellarine, which draws funding from members and City Hall, commissioned the $37,000 initiative. Mr Chamley said the video was shot to a “simple brief. “The brief was to use a simple format, something that shows Geelong’s history, something in there that grabbed attention and made it stand out and the rest to make Geelong look beautiful.

ZOMBIE-LED economic recoveries aren’t exclusive to Geelong. Ouyen, for instance, has been investing government arts funding in zombies - and residents are clambering to be a part of the project. High school students in the northwest Victorian grain town have poured state cash into a zombie apocalypse short film aimed at showing Ouyen in a new light. Everyone from young kids to senior citizens have been goring up in blood and horrific

ulcers to take part. The movie’s been an educational tool, giving kids film trade skill, and a rallying point for a town that, like Geelong, has endured economic problems in recent years. Geelong Mayor Darryn Lyons said zombies were extraordinarily mainstream at present, citing US TV zombie show The Walking Dead, which was outrating major sports. In just a few days the Geelong zombie clip had already drawn more than double the online hits of Daylesford’s $1 million tourism video, he said.

“We did extensive research on tourism videos, what had been done both here and elsewhere, what was trending now. “We found that videos that were a bit left of centre tended to get higher views. “Tourism videos are quite boring a lot of the time. If we'd just shown scenic shots no one would have batted an eyelid. “If we just did shots of the bollards and Eastern Beach then we'd have been criticised for being boring. Mr Chamley said Robot Army Productions created the concept but had to convince Mayor Darryn Lyons to participate. “It's not a documentary about Geelong. We knew the sleepy

hollow stereotypes existed and we didn't want to totally ignore them but dispel them through exaggeration. “We're using satire to dispel the myths. People who have a funny bone understand that. Mr Chamley said the video was aimed at getting attention while changing tourism perceptions of the region. All-Geelong talent was used in the making of the video, from Moor Grace acting students to caterers and make-up artists, he said. “Budding actors don’t often get the chance to be in something of this magnitude, so it’s great for them to be able to add to the show reel.

Freedom Aged Care

6 Matthews St, Grovedale 1800 357 681

It’s what’s inside that counts While renovations are well underway for the new Freedom Aged Care Geelong community, the friendly staff and valued residents wish to assure the community that it’s the kind hearts and friendly faces behind the refurbished walls that make Freedom Aged Care the choice for so many Australians. Having acquired the community earlier in the year, the staff un-

derstands it’s a difficult time for everyone connected to the previous company, however they are dedicated to helping those families in whatever way they can and creating a new model of aged care for the Geelong community. Choosing a care option for a loved one can be a confusing and complex decision, as not all aged care is the same. For many

decades, aged care has followed the same path and traditions. Freedom sets themselves apart from this stereotype by offering far more than just a place to live. For residents at Freedom, it’s like having a second family while they receive all the care and support they need to live as independently as possible. Some residents are there because they can no

longer manage and maintain their old family home, and many are couples with low to medium care needs who wish to stay together. Some residents suffer from varying levels of memory loss and others choose to call Freedom home because they have found themselves alone and socially isolated. Some choose Freedom for the

flexibility it offers in being able to bring their pets and have family members over to stay. Whatever it is that brings people here, Freedom recognises each person is on a different ageing and health journey – a journey made easier and more enjoyable at Freedom. Every aspect of life in a Freedom Aged Care community is based around access to care, through the day and night. The truly unique and special feature the community offers is that you will never have to worry about the changing levels of care you may require. If and when your health needs change, the team will simply increase the level of nursing care you require in the privacy of your own Freedom home. Each community is a vibrant social centre built on passionate pillars of personal freedom,

friendship and fun. At Freedom, couples are given the option to live together, and if one partners’ health deteriorates, the level of nursing care is simply increased to the partner who requires it. Every Freedom resident is recognised and respected as part of the Freedom family. This means peace of mind in knowing you are with the best aged care service, enjoying all the freedom, fun, friendship and personal care you could ever want or need. Freedom Aged Care is now open in Geelong and as an organisation with many years experience, they will always ensure a staff member is available to help answer any questions you may have. To experience the difference, contact the Freedom Aged Care team today on 1800 357 681.

Refurbishment well underway Ever since July earlier this year, local builders Matt O’Toole and Andrew Fawcett from Fawcett O’Toole have been working hard with plans and manual labour to bring Freedom Aged Care to life for its residents. The remodelling will cost about $30,000 per unit and approximately up to two million for the communal areas. This means there will be nearly $4 million invested to make this community fit the

living standard and service provision of the Freedom Aged Care model which has provided comfortable units for people all over the state who proudly call them home. The team is currently completing a master plan for the village, which will focus on remodelling the community’s communal areas to include larger dining areas, activity spaces, the opening of a hairdressing salon, a doctors and consultation room, a movie and entertainment theatre

and new landscaping, gardens and pathways. All units are also undergoing exciting refurbishments to bring the most modern self contained features to all of their valued residents. This will include the addition or renovation of new con temporary galley kitchens, bathrooms, laundries and private courtyards. This refurbishment has an approximate time frame for completion of 12-18 months.

Always available Freedom Geelong team (L/R): Pat Morrissey, Sandra Luck, Melissa Nielsen, Karen Skene, Wendy Johnston, Zagorka Bozanic, Jessica Blacksell, Kelly Drayton, Margy O’Brien, John Gerard and Sarah Franks, Village Manager RN (front and centre): Cate Johnson.

Job network in closure threat By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN GEELONG’S key jobs networking organisation could close in three weeks after being left in the dark about funding commitments. Geelong Region Local Learning and Employment Network (GRLLEN) chief Anne-Marie Ryan said the organisation was still unsure what level of funding it would receive next year. “We have 42 per cent of our current funding available and it’s not enough to be viable,” Ms Ryan said. The Independent reported in July the GRLLEN had lost almost $500,000 in Federal Government funding. State Government has committed to a $2.3 million funding package for 31 LLENs around Victoria but Ms Ryan was yet to know how much Gee-

long would receive. She said the funding uncertainty left staff in the dark. “The issue is that I’ve got a hand-picked staff with certain skills including a labour market analyst and futurist, project officer and website designer. “We’re remarkably lucky to have these staff but there’s a queue of people wanting them to work for them. “I haven’t been able to offer any of my staff a job yet.” Ms Ryan said the GRLLEN board needed a budget for next year to ensure the organisation could operate solvently. “We’ve been approached by superannuation funds and health funds to see if they can work with us on a long-term plan for address the retrenchments Geelong is going through. “They’re interested in work-

New Galaxy full of girl soccer stars

PACVAC THRIFT PROMOTION

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN AN ELITE Geelong girl’s junior soccer club received more than 70 expressions of interest only days after formation. Geelong Galaxy Girls secretary Tatiana Atkinson said the club had almost filled teams in under 12, 14, 16 and 18 divisions to play in a metropolitan competition next season. “Coaches are being interviewed and we're holding trials next week for all four age groups,” Ms Atkinson said. “This is the first time we'll have a unified neutral girl’s football club, enabling the best talent to be pooled together.” Galaxy was originally formed to bid for a National Premier League licence but the submission was withdrawn after protracted negotiations and changes to the bid conditions. “It’s the Galaxy reborn, if you like,” Ms Atkinson explained. “It saves going through the process of incorporation again. But we’ll consider applying for team name down the track.” Ms Atkinson said the response demonstrated the high level of enthusiasm among the region’s junior female soccer players for an opportunity to play against the best. “This is overdue for girls. There's obviously a bunch of girls out there who aspire to grow as top-class footballers but unfortunately they've been unable to get that opportunity in clubs.” Ms Atkinson said clubs under-

Surf Coast and Rangers, had offered the use of facilities for training and match days. “Now we really need sponsors to come on board to make this as financially viable as possible so our girls do have the opportunity to play with and against the best for their age.” Ms Atkinson said anyone interested in helping could contact the club at geelonggalaxygirls@ gmail.com.

We lose as pair prospers in US ALCOA’S Geelong workers might be gearing up for another 300 Christmas job losses but in the US the aluminium-maker's F150 pick-up trucks with Ford began running of the production line this week. Ford, which cut 300 jobs at Geelong and Broadmeadows this year and plans to axe another 500 in the next two years, hopes to bolster its fortunes with the new lightweight pick-up - the highestselling vehicle in North America. While the Australian fortunes of both multinationals are on the skids, presenting significant fallout for Geelong's economy, their deal to make aluminium F-

150s in the US has been hailed as ground-breaking. At 300kg lighter than the normal steel-framed model, the new F-150 is tipped to propel sales because of its greatly enhanced fuel efficiency. Ford unveiled the all-aluminium F-150 at the Detroit Auto Show earlier this year. Alcoa is spending $US575 million to expand production plants in Iowa and Tennessee to meet demand under long-term auto contracts with Ford. Reports have also pointed to Alcoa competitor Novelis commissioning two new automotive sheet lines in New

York and China. But the aluminium company has told the Independent the new lightweight cars deal will have no ramifications for Australia. Alcoa laid off 500 workers mid-year when its closed its Point Henry smelter. Another round of jobs cuts are expected before Christmas. Alcoa has said aluminium use is now moving mass market vehicles, with the company’s Randall Scheps describing the latest move as “the tip of the iceberg”. “We can certainly say that every year is going to be big for aluminium for the foreseeable future,” he said earlier this year.

GET MOOVING: Juliet Le Feuvre and campaign supporters with their inflatable cow on the banks of the Barwon River in Geelong this week.

A GIANT inflatable cow has pumped up an environmental cause on the banks of the Barwon River in Geelong. Environment Victoria used the blown-up bovine to promote its Cut the Crap campaign against the environmental damage livestock inflicts on the states rivers and creeks Campaign manager Juliet Le Feuvre said grazing on riverbanks was “the number one manageable impact on river health in Victoria”. “You wouldn’t expect to see cows grazing on the bank of the Barwon River in central Geelong. It’s a highly inappropriate place for a cow to be,” she said. “Statewide, around 4500 tonnes of cow poo ends up in rivers and creeks every day.” Ms Le Feuvre called for more fencing-off of riverbanks and for a ban of livestock on public land.

A-league prices Victory for families TICKETS to Melbourne Victory’s first home game at Simonds Stadium in January will be cheaper for families than admission to Cats matches in 2014, according to pricing released this week. Victory will play Perth Glory under lights on 2 January, with family general admission for $40 compared to $53.50 for standing non-member families at Cats games this year. Tickets go on sale on Tuesday for Victory members and on Wednesday for the general public at ticketek.com.au, with some discounts available for early purchases. Geelong Mayor Darryn Lyons said the city was "thrilled" to host the A-league ladder leaders.

Lion confirms brewery move By NOEL MURPHY HEALESVILLE’S White Rabbit Brewery will move to Geelong’s Little Creatures brewery in May. Beer giant Lion confirmed the move this week after the Independent revealed in September staff concerns about a a review of the company's operations at Healesville. “We've recently undertaken an extensive review of the White Rabbit Brewery and as a consequence we have made the difficult decision to close the site at Healesville and establish a new dedicated White Rabbit Brewery at our brewing operations in Geelong,” spokesperson Elise Gare said.

“White Rabbit is an essential part of our craft portfolio and it is becoming increasingly popular with lovers of great craft beer. “Unfortunately, our ability to expand our brewing capability to meet the growing demand is restricted at the Healesville site, so we've decided to move White Rabbit to our Geelong brewery where we will be better able to meet demand. “The Healesville site will close at the end of May 2015. Regrettably, there will be a small number of redundancies associated with the closure of the site. “Our people are our numberone priority and we'll be working with them to provide all the nec-

essary support during this period of transition.” Little Creatures’ $60 million South Geelong facility opened for business in the historic Valley Mills along the Barwon River last December. Little Creatures bought the site for $6.4 million in 2010 after considering several other options for its long-term east-coast headquarters. The company runs two other boutique brewery/restaurants outlets in Victoria - the beleaguered Healesville site and another in Fitzroy. The Healesville brewery, like Little Creatures Geelong site, had been a community hub in the region.

In the Ramage case the law’s response meant that it was Julie Ramage, not her undisputed killer husband that was put on trial. “Importantly, and what my research revealed, is that the Ramage case is not a one-off injustice of the provocation defence. These cases are unfortunately littered throughout Australian case law. “Through the operation of the provocation defence, the criminal law has too readily partially excused the contexts within which men kill while simultaneously

failing to understand the contexts within which women kill an abusive intimate partner. This is unsatisfactory. “It is essential that our courts send a clear message of the unacceptability of lethal domestic violence and do not promote victim blaming narratives that act to partially excuse the use of lethal violence in response to relationship separation or infidelity.” The povocation defence was abolished in Victoria in 2005 but remains available in several Australian states and territories and in comparable jurisdictions internationally.

She recently released Homicide Law Reform, Gender and the Provocation Defence, a book about injustices stemming from the use of provocation as a defence against murder cases. Dr Fitz-Gibbon offers lessons to legal experts on the law’s response to lethal violence in Australia and the United Kingdom. “I have long held a concern that the partial defence of provocation does exactly that and this book documents the many injustices of its operation and the need for meaningful change,’’ she said. Her book opens with the highprofile Victorian case of James Ramage who controversially claimed his wife had provoked him and was subsequently convicted of manslaughter instead of murder. Dr Fitz-Gibbon said she was as appalled as the general community that Ramage benefitted from the availability of a provocation defence. “The case illustrates the dangers of a partial defence of provo-

BOTH political parties are pushing environmentally damaging port polices, according to Geelong Environment council president Joan Lindros. Ms Lindros said the sites of Labor's Bay West option and the coalition's Hastings plan were too environmentally important to become Victoria's next container port. “Reports are showing there's insufficient protection for the environment in either location and both are RAMSAR-listed and important for our migratory species.” Ms Lindros said existing ports had the capacity to expand with less of an environmental footprint. “Geelong Port should expand and so should the other major ports at Melbourne and Portland,” she said. “We're at the bottom of Australia and least among the good areas for shipping to come to when there are already deeper ports in our northern parts. “Instead of each state vying for a bigger slice of the economic pie there should be a national approach to decide the best ports for various transport needs.” Ms Lindros’ comments followed coalition Environment Minister Ryan Smith declaring that Labor’s Bay West proposal would “destroy the Bellarine Peninsula environment”. Mr Smith said Labor environ-

Bay West, earmarked for Corio Bay's outer-harbour near Point Wilson, threatened Bellarine beaches, wetlands and the endangered orange-bellied parrot, he said. “Labor policy to build Victoria’s next container port near Geelong will have catastrophic consequences on the environment with the worst impacts to be felt on the Bellarine Peninsula,” Mr Smith said. “Labor’s plan to encourage bigger ships into the bay requires widening and deepening the heads.

“This would see increased sea levels within Port Phillip Bay and the loss of popular beachfront along the Bellarine Peninsula. “By increasing sea levels and changing the marine profile of the Bay, Labor is also putting at risk the delicate ecosystem of the Port Phillip Heads Nature Park as well as the wetlands and saltmarshes along the coast.” Ms Neville said the Napthine Government was peddling lies to the community. “This is a desperate Liberal party because they know there's no environmental damage,” Ms Neville said. “They know there's no need to blast the heads. The heads will need to be deepened at some stage to accommodate larger ships for the Port of Melbourne, let alone Bay West. “The channel was already deepened in 2006 and it did not cause any of the damage it was claimed would occur. “There was an environmental effects study which demonstrated there was no damage to the RAMSAR site. “The Liberals know that even their proposed site at Hastings will need dredging. “This is about justifying why thousands of jobs will go to Mornington instead of the Bellarine. We have a jobs crisis and I’m voting for jobs.”

ON MY usual travels, which I call ‘mooching’ around the region, I came across a rather large shed. Not the type you might find full of tools at the end of your garden, but a huge shop in a huge shed. In the semi-light-industrial part of South Geelong, alongside the railway, I discovered The Big Shed. Among the bargain-priced furniture and ornaments, some new and some second-hand, I found the most gorgeous black-and-cream-coloured outdoor setting for just $239. It featured cast-aluminium construction with tiles on the table top and the chair’s seats. Then I discovered The Big Shed was offering 20 per cent off usual prices, so the setting was now only $189. What a perfect purchase for chats over afternoon tea while, say, watching the kids play in the garden during warm summer days and evenings. Something that also caught my eye was a simple rustic-looking vase, filled with artificial lavender. Of course, if you have lovely-smelling lavender growing in your garden you could always add the real thing. Totally up to you. However, a benefit of a small vase of artificial flowers, which some of you may like, is that it needs no maintenance, other than dusting, I suppose. The vase was on sale in another part of the shop for $49, so I popped it on the table top and it really worked well, adding those small final touches to the garden decor aesthetic. Okay, so with cricket season here, I also had fans who like to watch it on telly in mind. You want to feel comfy and hydrated during those long periods on the couch. You also might want to lessen those regular trips back and forth to the fridge for cold beers or soft drinks, which disrupt your viewing. After all, you don’t want to miss a big six! I found a huge variety of sofas but the one that really caught my eye was a recliner with built-in

Taking care of business

Shaping the future of regional Victoria Leading up to the state election, the Victorian Employers’ Chamber of Commerce & Industry (VECCI) is urging the major parties to commit to four priorities that are crucial for regional Victoria — jobs, infrastructure, skills and international engagement. JOBS: Government can help small businesses and create jobs in regional Victoria by lowering business costs and providing incentives to employ more people. Lifting the payroll tax threshold to $850,000 would be a great start. VECCI is working to accelerate economic growth and secure future prosperity across Victoria. We are making a difference and so can you.

Letters Neglect needs attention I THINK Noel Murphy’s comment in last week’s Independent, about demolition by neglect, was very good. In Herne Hill we have a very derelict cement works tower that previous owners have left in an abandoned state. Vandals have easy access to this site also, with broken windows, concrete, sheds and buildings covered in graffiti. It also needs to be demolished. Please, Geelong’s council, look into this also. Colleen Laffy Herne Hill

Vote Labor, get CFMEU STATE Labor's shadow planning minister, Brian Tee, recently confirmed that if elected to government he would remain a paid-up member of the CFMEU, putting the state’s $25 billion construction industry at great risk. Let there be no misunderstanding, if Labor is elected on 29 November it will hand control of Victoria’s building industry to the CFMEU. The CFMEU is a massive risk to Victoria's economy and rule of law yet it will receive direct protection at Labor’s cabinet table from a Labor premier and planning minister. The CFMEU has repeatedly broken the law on building sites across Victoria and has defied the courts and condoned widespread intimidation of non-union workers. The CFMEU’s behaviour warrants the union’s deregistration, not reward and protection. Dr Stretch Kontelj Newtown

Forced to eat coal WHY ARE we still sending our young people off to a dirty, useless, technologically out-dated mining industry whose excessive profits go to a handful of people when we could be sending our young people into the vibrant, clean, useful, technologically advanced renewable industry sector? Surely our State Government’s love of coal will not mean that our children will be forced to eat it in the future. The terrible loss of 100 renewable industry jobs in Portland recently is evidence of the lengths this Government will go to kneecap the renewable indus-

try sector. It is economic suicide to continue to undermine the renewable industry, from which all Australians will profit. Judith Baldacchino St Leonards

Bank on Labor win BOOKIES recently rated Premier Napthine's Liberal party a $3.50 outsider to win the next Victorian state election. The ALP opposition was the hot favourite at about $1.30. I have rarely seen a better tax-free earn than the odds for the ALP, notwithstanding any inducements that the Napthine Government might throw at voters in the lead-up to the election. It hurts me to predict an ALP victory but business is business. A 30 per cent return on capital is almost six times the current annual bank interest rate, on which tax is payable. Better still, this Christmas give mum a real treat: take the tradition into the next generation and off mum's hands altogether. She'll be grateful and will enjoy the day so much more. Then at some time in the future the family tradition can be passed on to offspring. Melva Stott Anglesea

Blind to climate reality THE PHRASE, 'There are none so blind as those who will not see', springs to mind every time I read one of Alan Barron's climate change denial letters (Independent, 31 October). Where does he get his information and why does he believe it against the 97 per cent of peer-reviewed climate science screaming to us that we must reduce our carbon emissions? Mr Barron can keep denying reality but when he lets us know he is ready to be part of the solution he'll be welcome. A Gleeson Newtown

Spend up to save kids Mum's Christmas wish IT'S OFTEN heard in the weeks before the festive season: "What are you doing for Christmas?" The answer: "We always go to mum's" Every year mum is a year older but it never occurs to anyone that she may not look forward to this annual invasion. It's not just the shopping involved or juggling the cooking to have everything served up on time. It's the weeks beforehand spent cleaning the house, having the garden looking immaculate, organising beds for everyone and decorating the house. I know that many mums are exhausted long before the family descends on them. Mums have lives of their own, believe it or not - hobbies, volunteering, interests and activities that make up their weekly pattern. All this has to be packed up and put out of sight, which interrupts their daily routine. It can take some mums days to recover after everyone has gone on their merry way. Anyone who wants to go to mum's should just go for the evening meal, which is easier to prepare, and it's even better if everyone brings something - salads, meat, desserts, nibbles, drinks.

IF ALAN Baron’s subject wasn’t so serious his letter would have been funny. Among the usual fallacies, he thought “spending billions” would be a wrecking ball to the economy. This is far from the truth. Spending drives economic growth. For example, spending on World War II contributed to ending the great depression, which was exacerbated by lack of spending. Spending shielded Australia from the worst impacts of the global financial crisis. Spending drove growth during the industrial revolution. Spending on Y2k drove economic growth at the start of this century. Spending to de-carbonise our society will mitigate the worst effects of climate change while driving growth, creating new opportunities and new industries. The cost of inactiion far outweighs the cost of acting. Time is running out. For the sake of our kids we need to act now. Mark Ruseler Lara

AUDIENCE members could feel a premonition coming on at GSODA Junior Players’ Broadway Here I Come this weekend. Geelong has long produced performers who have blossomed on national and international stages and more than a few learned their craft treading the boards with GSODA, or Geelong Society of Dramatic Arts. Which is why GSODA Junior Players’ end-of-year variety show at Geelong Performing Arts Centre (GPAC) today and tomorrow could prove more than a little prophetic. The production includes some of today’s biggest hits of stage and screen with top young performers from across Geelong, the Surf Coast and Bellarine Peninsula. Featuring songs from mega Broadway hits including Wicked, Billy Elliot, Pippin, Book of Mormon and Mamma Mia, the production has given emerging musical theatre performers the chance to take on some of theatre’s iconic roles. The show includes a chorus of revolting children bringing Roald Dahl’s characters to life in songs from Tim Minchin musical Matilda. A band of merry murderesses does the Cell Block Tango from Chicago, while high-octane Legally Blonde number Whipped Into Shape features a chorus line of skipping ropes. Screen musicals will be represented with numbers from TV’s Smash, movie musical Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and Frozen’s perennial showstopper, Let it Go. Bringing it all together is experienced Geelong director Liz Lester who has assembled a young and enthusiastic produc-

Twins to folk up on Surf Coast INDIE-FOLK duo the Pierce Brothers will bring its acoustic music to Torquay after an international tour. Didgeridoos, foot-stomping percussion, well-worn guitars, blues harps and enthusiasm are the brothers’ simple tools of the trade but, then create a distinctive sound when combined with smart harmonies and well-honed lyrics. The brothers’ promoters said their judicious and mature use of volume to powerful effect, from poignant to raucous, allowed Jack and Patrick Pierce to wring out songs that “kick-start audiences

to their feet, clapping, singing and hollering along with them”. The Pierce Brothers are on a high after selling out shows in London and performing to a crowd of 10,000-plus punters at Lowlands Festival in The Netherlands. The twins were the second highest selling act at the festival’s merchandise tent, flogging more CDs than artists such as Snoop Dogg, Janelle Monae and First Aid Kit. The Melbourne brothers started out busking on Bourke St before foring a career as hard-working, international touring artists.

They quickly progressed from the mall to playing to five sold-out shows at Melbourne’s Shebeen before heading overseas. While in the Netherlands they were invited to play on 3FM Radio to officially open the Lowlands Festival. “To an audience of 1.5 million listeners, the boys put their stamp on Lorde’s Tennis Court complete with a didgeridoo solo, a Calvin Harris singalong and more than a few of the boys’ trademark yelps and howls,” the promoters said.

With The Night Tree EP released earlier this year and debuting at number one on the AIR album chart and 21 on the ARIA chart, The Pierce Brothers is set for shows back on Australian soil. The national tour will include Torquay Hotel gig on 4 December along with slots at Australian Worldwide Music Festival in Melbourne and South Australia’s Gorgeous Festival. In September the brothers signed a worldwide deal with Mushroom after selling 25,000 CDs without a recording label.

TOURING: The Pierce Brothers bring their unique sound to the Surf Coast next month.

Wood Oven’s best-eat win

GEELONG’S Original Wood Oven Pizza has been voted Victoria’s best takeaway restaurant. The venue grabbed top votes in the inaugural EatNow Best Eats Awards. Restaurant manager Ramesh Anthony is thrilled that a Geelong restaurant is the state’s best takeaway. “We were surprised to win the state award but it’s a huge honour for the whole team here,” Mr Anthony says. “I just thought we might have had a chance to win the regional award but it’s so great to know we have so many happy customers.”

Mr Anthony says Original Wood Oven Pizza is known in Geelong as a restaurant that goes above and beyond normal expectations. “We offer exceptional delivery and collection services from our popular Mercer St location. “All of our food is made fresh, so patrons will always get the excellent meal they desire delivered right to their door.” A favourite with customers is Original Wood Oven Pizza’s Turkish banquet for two, consisting of bread, dip, kebabs, ice cream and drinks. The venue also has an exten-

sive menu of traditional and gourmet pizzas, light and main meals including seafood - salads, pastas, dips and desserts. The EatNow online takeaway ordering service ran the awards, with more than 25,000 votes cast for 3000 eateries nationally. Awards were made for favourite restaurants, dishes and cuisines. The extensive menu at Original Wood Oven Pizza is available online through the ordering service. Original Wood Oven Pizza is at 56 Mercer St, phone 5229 9945.

SOME unusual fish were caught over the past week in the region. Allan Browse was fishing off the Surf Coast last weekend, chasing gummy shark and flathead. But he was surprised when what he thought was a flathead on the end of his line turned out to be a saw shark of almost 2kg, which he released after a photo. The other shock catch was Luke Nusteling’s extremely rare albino carp from Queen’s Park on Sunday afternoon. The prize catch weighed around 3kg. Anglers fishing Geelong’s waterfront caught pinkie snapper while casting soft plastics around structures. Letting the lure sink to the bottom before a slow retrieve was the key. Flathead to 45cm were taken with the same method. Pike were caught on lures from North Shore’s rocks. They varied in size from 60cm to over 1m, with any lure in white and heavy enough to cast a reasonable distance working well. Corio Bay’s outer-harbour fished well for snapper. The spoil grounds off Leopold produced fish to 5kg for anglers drifting and casting plastics such as Gulp Turtleback worms in Pumpkin Green. Australian salmon turned up last week in the same area, some pushing 2.5kg. They were taken by casting metal lures and soft plastics into the frenzy of feeding fish, with birds giving away their location. The Turn out from Clifton Springs boat ramp produced snapper to 7kg. Anglers using silver whiting as bait caught larger fish. Next door, the mussel beds offers smaller pinkies, especially for anglers using liberal berley trails. Shane Bridges anchored off the Hopetoun wreck where he caught a snapper of 57cm and 2.7kg on a squid strip as well as a nice bag of flathead to 45cm. St Leonards began producing larger numbers of whiting, with the Bourke St area as good as any. Anglers using tenderised fresh squid caught the biggest fish. Drifting over the shallow grass beds between St Leonards Yacht Club and the mouth of Swan Bay was worthwhile for squid to 1.5kg. Size 3 jigs such as Yamashita King George Whiting were effective when allowed to sink down just above the grass beds. St Leonards Pier was busy in the evenings with anglers seeking snapper. Long hours were the key, with the fish coming on the bite early in the morning. Queenscliff was again the best location for large squid on big jigs, with Bell Reef and the bight popular destinations. On the freshwater front, redfin catches in-

SEA SAW: Alan Browse off the Surf Coast with his rare saw shark. creased with the Barwon River at Queen’s Park produced redfin to 800g on Atomic Shad Deep lures in colour 17. Michael Evans fished for redfin at Wurdee Boluc Reservoir, catching four from 44cm to 48cm on Fish Arrow soft plastics. Ballarat’s Lake Wendouree continued producing good-size brown and rainbow trout on mudeye or fly. Most of the biggest fish were taken at night. McLeod’s waterhole at Drysdale fished well for carp to 6kg. Sweet corn kernels rigged with as little weight as possible was the key to success.

The next week’s options for anglers seeking snapper include St Leonards either the old Cole’s Channel or out in the deeper water, while the Barwon River estuary should fish well for silver trevally on soft plastics. Freshwater enthusiasts could try Wurdee Boluc Reservoir for redfin, especially on the warmer days when they seem to come right on the chew. Send reports and photos to info@raylongtackle.com.au. plenty of economical overs to ensure victory. In division two, St Alban’s Breakwater completely dominated day one of its match against local rival Thomson. Bowling first, the Saints returned to top form, restricting Thomson to just 172 in 60 overs. Chris Hester (3/29) starred, while Justin Miller (2/38) and Chris Jones (2/17) did their bit in a comprehensive display. With 21 overs to bat, the Saints got off to a dream start, finishing the day at 0/54 as John Irvine (45 not-out) put his side in the box seat. Thomson will need to dig deep and strike early to have any chance tomorrow. In division three, Bell Park has put its season back on track while virtually ending Corio Bay’s with a ruthless display. The Cobras won the toss and elected to bat, putting on 30 for the first wicket. But from there on it was all Bell Park as its bowlers ripped through a brittle middle order to dismiss Corio Bay for a paltry 115. Chris Laurie (4/27) was at his destructive best, while Todd Smith (3/24) showed his class when it mattered. But the Dragons weren’t finished there, rattling along to finish on 3/130 and claiming first-innings points on day one. Jamie Spiller finished not out 55 and will be hoping he gets a chance to keep batting tomorrow to establish a handy lead before his bowlers get a chance to claim a rare outright win.

GEELONG Cricket Club kept its season alive by the skin of its teeth last Saturday with a thrilling last-gasp win over St Kilda. Defending 333, the day’s play ebbed and flowed. Cats opener Jack Sheppard (3/66) struck early, while Corey Ogle (3/62) toiled hard throughout the day. At the death, St Kilda needed five runs to win and when Saints batsman Lachlan Graf launched a massive hit off leg spinner Jeremy Hart the Geelong players had their hearts in their mouths. But Eamonn Vines managed to hold on to a stunning catch for a thrilling four-run win. That could be just the tonic needed for the Cats. Tomorrow they travel to Footscray, looking to continue resurrecting their season, with a genuine belief that form and luck are back on their side. In Geelong Cricket Association, the match between heavyweights East Belmont and North Geelong looks to be tipped in the Lions’ favour after a blistering assault on day one saw them post 345. Cam Alford (4/46) was the pick of the bowlers, looking dangerous early as he reduced the hosts to 2/6, but Mark Hanley (52) and Matthew Lineker (83) steadied the ship. At 4/115 the game was evenly poised but Sean O’Neill (92) launched a vicious counter assault, hitting to all areas of the ground before Ben Spencer (56) put the icing on the cake with some lusty hitting late into the night. While 345 is a good score, if anyone can chase that down it’s the Magpies, with the likes of Andrew Fergusson and Jake Thorne more than capable of making a big ton. East Belmont will look to take a couple of early wickets but will need to get through

WHETHER it’s for business or pleasure, Truck Car Rentals has transport requirements covered. Truck Car Rentals has an extensive range of vehicles to suit a variety of requirements, owner Graeme says. “Being a small local operation, our prices are more competitive than bigger companies. “Plus, we can offer a high level of customer service because we know the local needs.” Truck Car Rentals recently expanded its fleet to include 46 seater buses, adding to its 12 and 22 seaters. “A lot of schools around Geelong use our services when they need extra buses,” Graeme says. “We have a lot of local clubs and groups hire the smaller buses as well as families for get-togethers or outings.” Truck Car Rentals has several enclosed trucks suitable for do-it-yourself removals, requiring only a car licence. A range of light commercials and vans, tray trucks, cars and single-axle trailers for the weekend handyman are also available. “Our rates are lower during the week so that adds flexibility to small business vehicle requirements,” Graeme says. Truck Car Rentals also has everything up to prime movers and trailers, great for logistics businesses trying to cope with extra demand. “If your vehicle is in for a service or repairs, Truck Car Rentals has the answer. “Whatever your needs, we can assist in finding the right vehicle for the job.” Truck Car Rentals is at 215 Station St, Corio, phone 5275 8288 or visit truckcarrentals.com.au.
