Study quite a catch By JONATHON HOWARD
FORMER Department of Fisheries employee John Gault has weighed in to debate around proposals to ban commercial net fishing on the Noosa North Shore and says it would be “foolish” to view the issue of depleting fish stocks, or the deterioration of Noosa River, in isolation. Mr Gault was instrumental in tracking, monitoring and blazing Noosa’s first fish and waterway studies in the 1960s and has continued to monitor the region’s changing marine ecology. He worked for more than 14 years on various government contracts to monitor marine life across the Sunshine Coast and played an instrumental part in Nancy Cato’s book, The Noosa Story: A Study in Unplanned Development (1979). Mr Gault said pollution has been an ongoing issue in the area for decades due in part to the number of sources feeding toxins into the river and estuary systems. He now fears without greater investigation and a “legitimate” environmental study, Noosa is headed down the path of an “environmental catastrophe”. He is calling on Noosa residents to band together and demand action to reveal the real issues plaguing marine life and threatening the future of Noosa’s marine habitats. “I believe in order to understand the full extent of this issue we need a comprehensive study into the Noosa North Shore, Noosa River and Weyba Lakes systems and all lakes and tributaries that run into these systems including their interaction as an entire ecosystem - not viewing these habitats in isolation,” he said. “Rampant development that involved the removal of curial wetlands, which were nursery areas for small fish, has impacted marine fish including examples such as Noosa Waters. “This study needs to include the local and pioneering fishing families’ knowledge, which is invaluable, and has been under underutilised.” Continued on page 10
Who wants a Brazilian!? Ebony Beauty Noosa are attempting a world record. Ebony receptionist Brigette Schultz, beauty therapist Tori Neate and business owner Kim Susskind.
Ouch! Pubic campaign is a ripper By JONATHON HOWARD A NOOSA beauty salon will attempt to set a world record for the number of ‘Brazilians’ completed in a single day in a “dare to be bare” challenge. While Brazilians are traditionally performed using warm wax to remove pubic hair, Noosa’s Ebony Beauty salon at Quamby Place has
pioneered the use of sugar paste extract called “sugaring”. Ebony Beauty owner Kim Susskind said in a single 10-hour day on Monday 8 December, she and her assistant would attempt to send no fewer than 60 Noosa women home with newly-smoothed skin. “But we need the support of dozens of ladies to set this record, and beat the current record of 38
Brazilians held by a salon in Launceston, Tasmania,” Kim said. “Anyone over 16 can take part in the attempt and everyone involved will receive a special personalised certificate acknowledging their participation.” To make it affordable, the salon has slashed the standard $64 price of a Brazilian down to just $45 for the one-day attempt.
“To get the record, it’s going to have to be run with military precision,” she said. “All participants must turn up 10 minutes prior to their scheduled appointment to fill out the necessary forms, and each Braz will take no longer than 20 minutes.” To find out more or to getting involved phone (07) 5455 4681.

Community working together on inclusion By JONATHON HOWARD NOOSA identity June Colley has been recognised for her tireless efforts in creating a more inclusive and accessible Noosa. Ms Colley was the recipient of the Best Individual Award at Spinal Injuries Australia’s fifth annual Inclusive Community Champions Awards last week. The awards were presented at the Noosa Council Art Gallery with Councillor Frank Pardon and Spinal Injuries Australia general manager of community development John Mayo. Noosa Council was also recognised with two distinguished awards for both Gympie Terrace and the Hastings Street streetscapes. Cr Pardon accepted the awards on behalf of the council and praised Hastings Street business community, who he said played an integral part in creating an inclusive Noosa. “Long time Noosa businessman Jim Barrado played a crucial part in the refurbishment of Hastings Street and he deserves a lot of recognition,” Cr Pardon said. The Noosa Acquatic Centre also picked up an award, along with the RACV Resort, Gympie Music Muster and Bushy Brown’s Adventure Ski Park. Ms Colley has been a passionate campaigner for the inclusion of all groups for many years and while she has seen the Noosa landscape improve, she still has some
INBRIEF Tower complete NOOSA Coast Guard has announced the completion of the Noosa River bar tower following three months of renovations. Coast Guard deputy flotilla Commander QF5 Alan Hall thanked Noosa Council, which owns the tower, for covering the cost of the exterior of the tower. Staff all leant a hand to renovate the interior. The tower also now includes a night vision camera, which will allow the bar to be monitored day and night.
Home music A SPECIAL event to help raise funds for homeless people will take place at the Bi-Centennial Centre this Saturday, 22 November. Organiser Michael Mullen said the event includes free music and a movie from 2pm. Mr Mullen said the number of homeless people was rising dramatically and the need for help was more than desperate. She said there were still issues within the community around assisting those in need to access services and experience life. She has recently made headroads at all the major local corporate businesses and said she found that the staff were keen to assist anyone who needed assistance. “I know that small businesses are also very helpful,” she said. “To progress this project Noosa Council formed an ‘equitable access working group’ the member-
ship of the committee included carers, vision impaired residents, people in wheelchairs, residents with walking sticks, crutches as well as other residents with a range of difficulties. “And some parents with young children were invited to have a say, council staff were of course also on board. Ms Colley said the working group members were all invited to visit each area of the shire and highlight the problems they had found difficulty in accessing, in-
cluding entrances to shops. “The Noosa National Park is now much more accessible for a majority of people,” she said. “Starting with Tewantin all the towns throughout the shire were streetscaped… Gympie Terrace could be regarded as the ‘jewell in the crown’ along with Hastings Street and the boardwalk. “This project highlights just what can be achieved when the whole community works together… and that is what Noosa is all about.”
Anzac effects THE spirit of the Anzacs will be commemorated with State Government funding for two projects in Noosa as part of the Anzac local community grants program. Noosa MP Glen Elmes said funding would go to the Noosa Shire Council’s Noosa Library Service to explore how the local community dealt with the effects of the war at home and how it was sustained. The Tewantin-Noosa RSL Sub-Branch will be the second recipient of the grant to hold a major commemoration on Anzac Day 2015 including a Dawn Service on Noosa Main Beach.
When things heat up, the tough hit the beach By JONATHON HOWARD SCORCHING temperatures sent hundreds of visitors and locals running for the beach or air-conditioning on Sunday as the mercury climbed into the mid-30s. Beachgoers braved the heat as the furnace continued before a southerly wind brought a reprieve on Monday. Weatherzone senior meteorologist Max Gonzalez said Sunday was the hottest day this year at a predicted 34 degrees, as a trough from the south carried hot north-
erly winds. “Back in February the coast experienced a hot day when it peaked at 33 degrees but (Sunday’s) weather broke the record,” he said. Mr Gonzalez said coastal residents can expect continued showers this week and will see temperatures drop despite high humidity. “Due to the action of the sea breeze especially along the coastal line, the heat will be kept at bay,” he said. “We’ll be expecting a cool relief with southerly winds pushing through bringing with it some
showers and thunderstorms.” Mr Gonzalez said the rain would likely continue until the end of the week. Rural Fire Service Queensland’s assistant commissioner Neil Gallant urged Queenslanders to be vigilant and said this was some of the hottest weather and highest fire danger Queensland has experienced this season. Queensland Health chief health officer Jeannette Young said each year about 400 Queenslanders were treated for heat-related illness, with more than 60 per cent

‘Positive’ budget beats woe By JONATHON HOWARD NOOSA Council has revealed its budget statement and capital works expenditure for the first quarter of the financial year as councillors debated the prospect of a general rate rise. The financial records were passed into council during the general committee meeting at the Noosa Council Chambers on Monday 17 November. Barring Cr Sandy Bolton, all councillors attended with Cr Tony Wellington chairing the meeting. Council’s CEO Brett De Chastel said the budget statements were positive and addressed community concerns around council’s financial viability. However, several residents have already attacked the council’s lack of capital works expenditure including the stalling of the Munna Point Bridge upgrade. The council set a budget of $1.4 million in stage two of Munna Point Bridge, which is now overdue for repairs, but has only spent $3518 or 0.25 per cent of the required budget. Noosa Parade Munna Point Bridge investigations progressed slightly with a budget of $185,100, but the works are only 3.09 per cent completed. The capital works schedule shows a severe slowing of repairs and upgrades across the shire from the $23.9 million works budget allocated, of which only $2.22 million has been spent, or a total of 9.27 per cent. Both Pomona Cemetery (niche wall) and Tewantin Cemetery (concrete beam) require $13,000, but have received zero dollars to date. Environment assets, bushland, tracks and trails have also come up short, with only 0.08
per cent spent of the budgeted $289,000. Waste management has also stalled with zero per cent progress on the budgeted $793,900 for the Noosaville Landfill bio basin, sediment control and stormwater. Council did progress with coastal canals and waterways with the completion of the Noosa Waters revetment walls stage 2a, at a cost of $47,000, which is now 100 per cent completed. Although it is only the first quarter of the new financial year, council would normally aim for a target of around 25 per cent capital works per quarter completed in order to achieve its goal by the end of the 2014/15 financial year. Cr Frank Pardon said he was concerned with the progress of the capital works schedule as well as road re-surfacing around the shire. Council staff addressed Cr Pardon’s and community concerns and said capital works would be accelerated and should begin to progress more by June 2015. The financial projections also raised the prospect of a general rate rise next year, which was pointed out by Cr Bob Abbot. Cr Abbot asked for clarification around the potential for rate increases and said any long term comparisons of council’s budgets needed to consider potential changes. However, CEO Brett De Chastel and mayor Noel Playford said the figures were a guide and could accommodate change. Mayor Playford said the figures presented before council showed a financially strong council that was able to withstand the advent of any future financial pressure. Council staff said it was anticipating that any future rate rise would be in line with the consumer price index (CPI) of between 2-3 per cent, including growth of around 0.4 per cent.
Noosa Council during Monday's general committee meeting. However, Mr De Chastel stressed that the current financial models were “not giving councillors a projection of rate rises”. Council’s statements showed an operating surplus ratio of 0.0 per cent next year, 1.7 per cent in 2015 and 2.6 per cent in 2017 - all within targets. The net financial liabilities ratio, which measures the financial liabilities of council repaying operating revenues, showed 2.1 per cent
next year, -0.3 in 2016 and -3.6 in 2017. The asset sustainability ratio, which is the ratio that reflects the rate which infrastructure assets managed by council are being replaced, shows council is on track with 103.6 per cent in 2015, 104.3 per cent in 2016 and 105.7 per cent in 2017. The final vote on the budget was expected during council’s ordinary meeting at Peregian Beach on Thursday 20 November.
Mangoes are hot property By JONATHON HOWARD
Cooroy Harvest Fresh owner Joe Bartolo says mango mania has come to Cooroy.
MANGO mania is sweeping across Noosa this month with prices tipped to fall in time for Christmas. No Queensland Christmas is complete without the iconic stone fruit and families are expected to spend a record amount on mangoes this year. Cooroy Harvest Fresh owner Joe Bartolo said his mangoes were already hot property. “We’re selling three mangoes for $5 and customers can expect to see those prices fall closer to Christmas,” he said. Roadside mango seller Gill Robinson, who has set up a temporary mango stand at Pacific Petroleum on Hilton Terrace, said as with previous years the Kensington Pride was a popular pick.
“Kensington Pride makes up about 80 per cent of all the sales - it’s the preferred mango for Christmas - but we also have Bowen mangoes and R2E2 which can offer competitive prices,” she said. Ms Robinson said she also expected prices to fall closer to Christmas. An estimated 3.3 million trays will be produced in Queensland this year. Boyd Arthur, from the Australian Mango Industry Association, said that while some fruit had been harvested, most orchards will start picking towards the end of the month. Last year, Queensland growers produced almost 70 per cent of the national crop, following a poor season in the Northern Territory. While yields have dropped
slightly this year, Mr Arthur says it’s still shaping up to be a reasonable harvest. “It’s not a bumper crop, but we’re expecting tray levels to be pretty close to last year,” he said. “We’re looking at 1.5 million trays from the Burdekin/ Bowen region, and roughly 2.8 million trays for Mareeba/ Dimbulah and Mutchilba. “We’ve had unusually cold temperatures through the fruit set stage, so the pollination on all varieties is a little bit affected.” Mr Arthur says it appears fruit quality should be high in most regions. "Because it’s been dry, we’re seeing little problems with things like scale,” he said.

Graffiti crusade MORE than 1000 local young people will take part in a new education program targeting graffiti. As part of the 2014 Safer Queensland Community Grants initiative - supported by Suncorp Insurance and the Queensland Police Service - Noosa Shire Council received over $5,000 for its graffiti education program, being delivered at local secondary and primary schools. Mayor Noel Playford said in a press release the initiative, which is part-funded by council, is now underway. “Graffiti costs the community greatly. This program has been designed to discourage young people from engaging in graffiti crime, by making them aware
of the repercussions and the impact it has on the community,” Cr Playford said. The initiative is among several the council is undertaking to help reduce graffiti incidents across the shire. Young offenders are also now being made to clean up graffiti under an agreement with Sunshine Coast Youth Justice Service. The education program has the support of local authorities including police, youth services and utility providers. It includes a 45-minute presentation, letter to parents, handbooks for teachers, and stickers, comics and other materials.
Its message is: ‘Respect it. Don’t wreck it’. An experienced youth presenter and actor delivers the presentations, which send a clear message that illegal graffiti is about choices and consequences. Warner Youth Education will implement the program. Warner’s graffiti education program has seen successful results and positive feedback from students and teachers at schools across Australia. For more information visit:www.warneryoutheducation.com. au<http://www.warneryoutheducation. com.au>. Noosa Council was among more than 35 successful applicants to share in more than $200,000 worth for funding for community-led projects.

The meeting following previous community consultations to determine the best way forward for the popular Butter Factory an iconic local building.
Ammunition found WATER Police have recovered 12 boxes of live ammunition found near the Eenie Creek Bridge at Noosaville on Friday, 14 November. The ammunition was described as being for army use and was both found in stored metal boxes or cardboard storage boxes. Police handed the ammo over to the Department of Natural Resources and Mines, who would carry out the destruction of the items.
Bright future at Peregian Beach By JOLENE OGLE THE amalgamation of Peregian Beach SLSC into Noosa Heads SLSC was a Queensland-first, and it looks to be working a treat since patrols started six weeks ago. According to Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ), the volunteer patrols of the Peregian Beach have been “seamless” with no reduction to the patrols, thanks to the help of Noosa Heads SLSC. SLSQ Sunshine Coast regional manager Aaron Purchase said the decision to join the two clubs, while a difficult one for Peregian Lifesavers to make, has ensured the longterm future of surf patrols and member development at Peregian Beach. Noosa Heads SLSC president Greg Cowie said the main focus for the club was to support the local community and provide a safe place to swim. Mr Cowie said it had been a long process working through the legal and financial procedures of joining the clubs, but minus a few “hiccups” everything was working well. “Generally, surf lifesaving is a great big family,” he said. “We saw the need to firstly make sure the beaches were patrolled, and then for a longterm future for the Peregian facility.” Peregian Beach SLSC former president Brett Leckie said the decision to close the Peregian Beach SLSC earlier
Working together: Peregian Beach SLSC former president Brett Leckie with Noosa Heads SLSC president Greg Cowie. this year was a “hard pill to swallow”. “The local community have been confused and not really knowing what’s actually happening with the closure of the (bistro),” he said. “The closing of the club upstairs was a financial matter due to trading conditions. “Those trading conditions made it really difficult for us to continue. “We had to make the decision to wind the club up. It was very difficult for our members and a hard pill to swallow, but one we had to make. “For the betterment of life saving, that was a decision we had to make.” Mr Leckie says he is now
a member of the Noosa Heads SLSC board as the director of the Peregian Beach operations, where he will be responsible for the operations at Peregian Beach. “My role is to facilitate what happens here at Peregian,” he said. “Being a past Peregian member, it gives me a good standing to advise Noosa people on what happens here at Peregian, what the local community are looking for.” Mr Leckie and Mr Cowie said it was hard to predict the future of the Peregian Beach SLSC bistro and upstairs area, but both were positive the future looked bright for both clubs.

Bell's yell at kids By JONATHON HOWARD IF THE constant yapping from the dog next door is driving you bonkers, or loud music and endless parties are keeping you up at night, you are not alone, but screaming kids are fast becoming the coast’s new annoyance. Doonan dog owner, Andrew Bell, says it’s unfair that parents turn their nose up at dog owners while their children throw wobblies in public places. While the challenges of raising a child are numerous, from teething to the terrible twos, Mr Bell said some parents needed to be more assertive. “I was quite disgruntled as I was ‘harrumphed’ at for walking my dog in a public place and then eating lunch at a dog friendly restaurant,” he said. “A point to note is that he is a big loveable dog, trained, registered, well behaved in public, fully vaccinated and clean, however, as we were having lunch it suddenly crossed my mind that while our narky neighbours on the next
table were bemoaning our presence, their children were acting like wild animals.” Mr Bell said he was sick of enduring children’s temper tantrums in public places as mum and dad ignored them. He was also angered by the lack of parental guidance for children trashing the local flora and fauna. “Watching them break branches off trees and uprooting flowers, for no other reason other than they never get told off,” he said. “If my dog chased wildlife, it’s a fine or the council threatens to impound the dog. But a snap survey of parents said it was “silly” to compare dogs with children, despite some dog owners babying their pets. Noosa parent Kym Summers said “yes” children do throw tantrums and everyone has a different style of parenting. “Everyone has different parenting
styles, just as every dog owner has a different training style,” she said. “It’s embarrassing for a parent when a child throws a tantrum in a public place, but berating the parent will not help the situation. “If it was my child, I would remove myself and the child from the situation but that’s not everyone’s style.” Mr Bell said he was not saying all kids were bad or that all parenting was poor. “But from the platform I have been viewing from with my dog, we seem to have a real problem with feral children that do not get told the rules of life by parents,” he said. Mr Bell said from now on he planned to ignore the callous comments and dirty looks from disgruntled parents. HAVE YOUR SAY: Do you think it is wrong to compare young children with dogs? Send your comments or emails to newsdesk@noosatoday. net.au

Cooroy Butchery is keeping locals up-to-date about when it will re-open after a devastating act of alleged arson.
Vigil for butcher By JONATHON HOWARD COOROY residents continue to voice their support for the Cooroy Butchery to re-open with several regular customers going vegetarian until it does. The Maple Street butchery was gutted in mid-September from what was allegedly an arson attack. Customers and other business owners have offered their sympathies to owners Angela and Trent Kirkpatrick, who are working through the long insurance process and have posted a running sheet on the front window. The notices are now covered in messages of support. “We’ll all be back supporting you - as soon as you’re up and running. Hang tough,” one message reads.
Other messages went further. “Haven’t had a steak since September,” it read. Other said they missed the butchery’s freerange options. “It’s good (you’re re-opening) I miss your free-range chickens,” it reads. The Kirkpatricks had served the Cooroy community for the past nine years. While devastated by the blow, they are determined to re-open. “We are just going through everything at the moment and cleaning out the shop,” Angela said. “At the moment we don’t know how structurally sound the building is with the damage, but we would love to re-open. “We’ve been there nine years and it’s been wonderful being part of the small community.”

TURTLE nesting season has commenced and local animal protection groups are calling on the community to help protect nests, hatchlings and laying turtles. All seven species of the world’s sea turtles are endangered, six of which live in Australia, but Coolum and North Shore Turtle Group volunteer Adrienne Savage said everyone could help protect the turtles. “Many people aren’t aware that from November to March we have nesting turtles right here on the Sunshine Coast,” she said. “Female loggerhead and green sea turtles return to our sandy shores some 30 years after they have hatched to lay their eggs and begin the cycle again. “Each female turtle nesting on our beaches has survived a long journey from her birth on a Queensland beach at least 30 years ago. In that time she has crosses the ocean to South America and back.” Adrienne said the survival rate for sea turtles from birth to age 30 was about one in 1000 hatchlings, but the good news was the community could help to protect the turtles. Turtles pick a nesting site as high up the beach as possible, before laying eggs and using the sand as an incubator and the only way to tell if a sea turtle has visited the beach to nest, is to keep an eye out for their tracks.
Watch out! It's turtle season from now until March next year. “The tracks look similar to quad bike tyre marks in the sand and will go from the water’s edge up to the dune and back again,” Adrienne said. If you see a nesting turtle, Adrienne said it was important to turn off any torches, keep your distance and remain still. “Nesting turtles are very easily spooked, so they will turn around and go back to sea and may dump their clutch of eggs in the ocean,” she said. “Please contact Coolum and North Shore Coast Care (CNSCC) immediately if you see a nesting turtle as we may be able to tag her or record any existing tags once she has
completed laying. “Plus, we’ll be able to guide you on how to watch the turtle safely without disturbing her while she lays.” Reporting the location of turtle nests helps CNSCC protect the eggs from foxes, extreme weather events as well as council works and other activities that would endanger the nest if the location was not reported. If you see turtle tracks on your local beach, please call the Coolum and North Shore Coast Care group turtle volunteers on 0409 807 110 or 0403 370 157, or visit www. coolumcoastcare.org.au for more information.

By JONATHON HOWARD SEVERAL Noosa Councillors have expressed their disgust with the treatment of the Noosa North Shore following the Brisbane G20 long weekend. Thousands of loaded four-wheeldrives converged on the North Shore on Friday from Brisbane and by Sunday they had left a trail of garbage and human faeces in their wake. Noosa Councillor Joe Jurisevic spoke with Noosa Today and expressed his disdain for the mistreatment of the fragile dunes, habitats and ecosystem. “What is it going to take to get the message through to these people,” he said. “There’s already so many reminders telling people to ‘do the right thing’, ‘don’t destroy what you came to enjoy’ and ‘take photos, leave footprints’, but nothing is getting through.” Mr Jurisevic takes part in the Surfriders Foundation Sunshine Coast beach clean-up initiative and he’s inviting people to come back and help clean up on the 29 and 30 November weekend. “There’s a need for people to start taking responsibility,” he said. “You can’t just dig a hole and use
it as a toilet - where do you think it all goes. “There is simply no regard for the fragile environment and maybe it means the State Government should reassess the number of vehicles allowed up the beach.” Noosa Councillor Frank Pardon, who lives on the North Shore, said he was also shocked and appalled by the coastline’s mistreatment. Cr Pardon said Noosa Council had no jurisdiction over the North Shore camping, other than issuing camping permits at the Wilderness Camp Grounds. He said the installation of a toilet block was long overdue, but the ball was in the State Government’s court. “The State Government and Cooloola (Gympie) Shire Council need to develop a better plan to control and monitor this dumping situation,” he said. Cr Pardon said the State Government was currently receiving in excess of five fees from each beach goer to the North Shore, which averages about 22,000 vehicles per year or translates to millions in revenue. “There’s registration for cars, boats and trailers, camping permits this all goes to the State Government and yet the local governments are expected to step in and resolve these issues,” he said.
The old saying 'don't destroy what you came to enjoy' is having little impact on beach goers to the Noosa North Shore. Both councillors Jurisevic and Pardon said the state needed to do more, including a possible revision of the number of vehicles using the Noosa North Shore, which many people believe is compacting sand,
destroying fragile habitats and leaving a terrible mess. Help needed: To get involved in the Surfrider Sunshine Coast clean up contact surfridersunshinecoast@ gmail.com or phone 0415 670 639.

River study quite a catch Mr Gault said the ecology of Noosa’s marine life is being impacted by the combination of visitor numbers, vehicles, human pollution (through sewage, plastic and dumping), over fishing, hazardous chemical run off and development. He believes the first step needs to be the installation of silt arrestors at every street drain to prevent an excessive amount of rubber and oil from making its way into the lakes and waterway systems. “Black silt and pollution from the roads are a huge issue and the amount of acid sulphates entering the water is dangerously high,” he said. The results of thousands of years of acid sulphate soils are naturally occurring soils, sediments or organic substrates, that are formed under waterlogged conditions. These soils contain iron sulfide minerals (predominantly as the mineral pyrite) or their oxidation products. In an undisturbed state below the water table, acid sulphate soils are benign. However, if the soils are drained, excavated or exposed to air by a lowering of the water table, which has been experienced across Noosa River, the sulphides react with oxygen to form sulphuric acid. Release of this sulphuric acid from the soil

From page 1 Mr Gault said the Noosa Council’s recommendation to the State Government to ban commercial net fishing on Noosa North Shore was “short sighted” and failed to acknowledge the complex nature of marine life and its life cycle from guppy in the river systems, to schools of fish in the sea. “Consider for a moment three factors including temperature, salinity and food for marine life,” he said. “All these factors are influenced by the health of the river and lakes systems, as well as the coastal areas and we’re seeing dramatic change and influence from pollution.” He said the comprehensive study needed to be done by marine ecologists and Sunshine Coast University - because they did not have political ties. Mr Gault said fishermen were not the problem and were once considered the custodians of Noosa’s marine ecology, but had since become an easy target as the issues continued to compound. “For a long time fisherman were the only ones who monitored fish stocks, knew when to fish and when to allow for fish to re-spawn,” he said. “Fishing is not the problem; instead it’s the combination of all influences.”

Once mobilised in this way, the acid and metals can create a variety of adverse impacts: killing vegetation, seeping into and acidifying groundwater and water bodies, killing fish and other aquatic organisms, and degrading concrete and steel structures to the point of failure. Mr Gault said the half life of these acid sulphates was thousands of years, but when new

chemicals from tyres (rubber), run off (oils and pesticides) are brought they combine to create “dioxin”. Dioxins are environmental pollutants and are a group of dangerous chemicals known as persistent organic pollutants (POPs). “Dioxins are of concern because of their highly toxic potential and experiments have shown they affect a number of organs and systems,” he said. Once dioxins enter the body, they last a long time because of their chemical stability and their ability to be absorbed by fat tissue, where they are then stored in the body. Their half-life in the body is estimated to be seven to 11 years. In the environment, dioxins tend to accumulate in the food chain. The higher an animal is in the food chain, the higher the concentration of dioxins. “Every visitor and residents of Noosa needs to know they are safe to swim and that the fish they eat from these ecosystems are also safe,” he said. “That is why an independent scientific study is required, without political influence, to change the course of Noosa’s marine ecology for the better and for future generations.” Mr Gault said the funds to buy back fishermen’s licenses would be better spent on indepth and independent marine biological investigations. Mayoral push for cycle ways
$2.5m arterial road upgrade By JONATHON HOWARD
By JOLENE OGLE GET on your bike to keep those “dreaded traffic lights away, that’s the message from Noosa mayor Noel Playford. “The inevitability is, if we keep having more and more cars, we’re going to have to spend a lot of money on intersections. We’ll end up having signalised intersections and traffic lights that we don’t want, mayor Playford said. Mayor Playford’s comments come amid a joint announcement with Member for Noosa Glen Elmes of a further $1.1 million funding for Noosa’s cycle ways with additional lanes, signage and an expansion of the network planned for the region. The planned works are jointly funded by the State Government and Noosa Council, and are part of a bid to get more people cycling in the region. Mayor Playford said safer cycle ways, better signage and an extended network, means there was no excuse to not enjoy a ride through Noosa. “It’s a great way to take in the biosphere, he said. Member for Noosa Glen Elmes said the planned upgrades were the fourth lot of funding for Noosa region’s cycle ways, with more than $5
Member for Noosa Glen Elmes and Mayor Noel Playford take to the streets. million already invested. Mr Elmes said the planned works would make cycling in Noosa even safer and “hasslefree for locals and visitors, making it another appealing aspect of Noosa. “Cycling is a part of the Noosa identity, he said. “We have a reputation as a community that values its environment and values a healthy lifestyle. To extend these cycle ways, adds to that and it adds to the drawing power of people coming to live in Noosa, or to visit for a weekend or a long weekend. Mr Elmes said the extension and improvements of the network weren’t in response to the reported bubbling ten-
sions between motorists and cyclists. “I think Noosa, as is generally the case, was well ahead of its time, he said. “A long time ago bicycle lanes were being put in in Noosa, long before stories about friction between motorists and cyclists. This is a community that is used to it. It was all in place. “What we’ve been doing is adding to the network and making it safer. But this is something that was decided in Noosa a long time ago, the rest of Australia, as usual, is catching up. Mr Elmes said more funding would be invested in the Noosa cycle ways as it became available.
COMMUTERS and residents using the busy Eumundi-Noosa Road can expect 12 weeks of delays from February next year due to road upgrades. The road upgrade is estimated to cost $2.5 million and will complete the one kilometre section from Grays to Justin roads. LNP state member for Noosa Glen Elmes unveiled the plans last Thursday to complete the upgrade and reconstruction of the worst section of Eumundi-Noosa Road. Mr Elmes said he had been fighting for this road upgrade since 2007 and all sources of possible funding had been explored and priority considered and reconsidered. “I thank the Minister for Transport, Scott Emerson, and the Newman LNP Government for recognising the importance of this arterial road to the Noosa community and sourcing the necessary funds from his road works budget, he said. Mr Elmes said the upgrade had been delayed because of the higher priority given to the road rehabilitation work made necessary because of the cyclones and floods, which had caused such devastation across Queensland. During the period 2010 to 2013, the cost to the state from these es-
Member for Noosa Glem Elmes announced to media last Thursday the final stage of the Eumundi Noosa Road upgrade. sential works was $6.923 billion. “This complements the rehabilitation work from the roundabout at Emu Mountain Road to Grays Road which cost $6.5 million and was completed in 2012, he said. “This is the major entrance from the south into Noosa. It is a major link for local commuter traffic, for kids going to and from school every day for all the local tradies plying their trades as well as for tourists. Mr Elmes said the works would transform EumundiNoosa Road into one which
people would be proud to use as well as for visitors to use and which will be safe for the 12,000 vehicles using it on a daily basis. “Users will notice that preliminary works will commence in December 2014, weather permitting, he said. “We are very conscious about the impact that road works will have on traffic movement and commuter travel times and so we want to minimise that disruption. “Accordingly, works will commence in earnest during February 2015 following the tourist season and is expected to take 12 weeks to complete.

All class for season By JOLENE OGLE MORE than 120 locals came together in what was a classy way to help local families doing it tough this festive season. The annual Santa’s Classy Helpers charity dinner was held at Noosa Springs on Friday night (14 November) and helped raise funds for disadvantaged families throughout Noosa. Event organisers said the night was a great success with guest speaker Terry Hayes entertaining the diners. Santa’s Classy Helpers still need help and are asking locals to drop in any tinned or packaged food or cleaning supplies to Noosa Classy Lady, shop 1/199 Gympie Terrace, Noosaville. The next charity event will be an afternoon tea at the Doonan Cafe on Friday 28 November, from 2.30pm. Anyone who wants to attend can phone Noosa Classy Lady on 5449 7599 for more details.

Epic contest in battle of codes I HONESTLY thought I was watching a Charlton Heston epic movie when I tried to sit quietly at the Contendor of the Codes boxing tournament a couple of weeks ago. It really was like the Romans throwing the Christians to the Lions, the crowd simply went off. I don’t think it was the class of the fighters, more so the effort of just getting in and having a go for charity and their beloved clubs. All sports were represented - rugby, football, AFL, cricket and league. The fighters had all done some pre-night training under the watchful eye of former professional champion Israel Kani at his venue HBO at Noosaville. The place was packed and the behavior top class, and there was plenty

raised for Sunshine Coast Butterflies and the participating clubs. The organisers did two smart things on the night - one was having Israel referee and the other, the bouts were over three rounds of 90-seconds duration. That way safety was the top priority and the boys were fit enough not to get hurt. I can assure you, if the rounds had of been over two or three minutes, someone would have got hurt. I certainly can recommend the HBO Gym to anyone wanting to take up the art of self defence.

I was proud to see such a wonderful night, with nearly everyone having a easy night of enjoyment. Although there were a few girlfriends/ mothers cringing every time a solid punch landed. But they needn’t have worried as the combatants were wearing 16oz gloves and official head-guards to Olympic standard. I also noticed one of the pugs was the very talented Anthony Ziph who really leads by example. What can’t this former Noosa Pirates Star do? Three years with the Brisbane Broncos, two years with Brisbane Norths, three local A Grade premierships, and plays off single figures in golf. He certainly showed he can hold his hands up, which he will need to do following his appointment as the new Pirates/Gympie coach.
A four-man panel including Gympie supercoach Darren Burns and Noosa’s favorite son Greg Christensen were given the task of finding a person who would lead the merged clubs into the future. Plans are already well in place with A Grade, Division 2, under-18s, and Youth Cup teams to represent the northern area of the Coast. Congratulations to all, I think you have got the right bloke, hopefully he won’t have to butter the bread on game day. How about the latest dribble from someone who played the political correctness card after fast food giant McDonald’s was criticised for handing out prizes “Team Spirit awards”. Apparently a Coast dad complained and the Obesity Policy Coalition agreed, taking the complaint to the Advertising Standards Bureau two
months ago. Sadly this dad, has missed the point of the awards, its not about selling more french fries/ burgers, its about giving something back to the community, on the job well done. I am very close to most local Mac owners, and I can assure that yes, it’s a PR exercise but its their way of putting something back. If you put a dollar value on how much the Mac shops raise and return to charities is to hard to calculate, but what about Ronald McDonald House and its importance in the community. Local McDonald’s have been ordered to stop and withdraw any Team Spirit awards. So I hope the dad is happy, but I wonder what he eats when watching the Big Bang Theory each week. Until next time.

Victory on the seas By JOLENE OGLE THEY have been trained to fire a weapon and use the latest communications technology, but many of the 7th Combat Signal Regiment have never surfed before. That was soon changed when 47 military communication experts from the Enoggera Barracks descended on Noosa’s Access 14 last Wednesday for three days of water fun under the guidance of Merrick’s Learn to Surf team. The soldiers spent three days learning to surf, kayak or stand-up paddle board, a big change from their usual combat and military training. Many of the soldiers had spent time overseas in either peace-keeping missions or in combat, but said they loved the chance to get out and build comradery while having fun.

Japanese economic stimulation By JONATHON HOWARD
Yaroomba development proposal: Sekisui House will carry out the second phase of consultations this week. council with the feedback received, but also to explain any changes to the proposal. “To date the feedback from many Sunshine Coast residents has been positive with support for the proposal, particularly around a tourism and residential development that will provide future jobs and economic benefits to the community. “There is also local feedback centred on the issue of height - predominantly related to visual impact and traffic concerns. “According to a June 2014 economic report from the University of the Sunshine Coast, micro, small and medium enterprises comprise 96

per cent of greater Sunshine Coast businesses. “A lot of people we have spoken to recognise that many of these businesses would benefit from the economic growth that would occur from this investment in tourism and a variety of forms of accommodation.” The proposed plans for the site include an internationally branded five star hotel, which would be the first developed on the Sunshine Coast for over 25 years. Other uses include residential and agedcare facilities, retail and public precinct. If approved, development would be staged over a period of 12 years.
“This will be a world-class precinct which will give a major boost to tourism and investment into the Sunshine Coast as well as provide future opportunities for the next generation.” Mr Aldridge said. Economic studies indicate that if the project were to go ahead, 4500 construction jobs would be created during the development, and more than 620 permanent local jobs would be created. The flow on effect for the community would be an additional 1500 jobs created, and inject $73 million tourism dollars every year for the Sunshine Coast region if a five star hotel of that size were to go ahead.

SEKISUI House is reporting “largely positive feedback” from residents over its proposed Yaroomba development following initial community consultations. Many residents are positive about the prospect of new income and a stimulating of the local economy. Meanwhile, those opposed, largely those who live near the proposed site in Yaroomba, are still actively campaigning against the development. The Japanese developer will now host additional community engagement sessions this week at Maleny and Nambour to gather feedback on preliminary plans for a proposed development on its 20 hectare beachside land holding at Yaroomba. Evan Aldridge Senior Development manager Sekisui House said the company had scheduled the two additional sessions at the request of Sunshine Coast Council. “In the course of this round of community engagement, we have met with hundreds of community members at sessions all across the coast, from Coolum to Caloundra,” Mr Aldridge said. “We have also conducted stakeholder briefings with community and business groups, and Sunshine Coast Council. “At a recent meeting, councillors requested that we ensure the views of the hinterland were also included, so we have scheduled two further sessions this week. This was a valid request,” he said. “Once we have completed this round of community engagement we will be in a position to provide a report to council by the end of the year. “We welcome the decision of council to defer the meeting to consider amendments to the planning scheme. “This will give us time not only to provide

All in for a good read By JOLENE OGLE TWO years in the making, the Noosa Writers group launched their latest literary offering to a packed house last Friday. Frozen in Time is the joint effort from six local authors, who each contributed a number of short stories and poems ranging from the melancholy, to the comedic, and mysterious. In a twist of the usual format,
all authors - Christine Bayly, Maria Benson, Grayham Bickley, Celia Esplin, Jo Fagan and Sheila Mason - joined forces to co-write a novella that can be found in the rear of the book. Each author wrote a piece of the novella from the point of view of a different character creating a unique and intriguing mystery story. Frozen in Time is available from the Noosa Arts and Craft centre in Wallace Park.

By JONATHON HOWARD A SPECIAL fund-raiser to help Petra and Jack Geitl save for an accessibility vehicle will set sail tonight and there are still plenty of tickets available. Noosa residents are being asked to dig deep and attend the fund-raiser hosted by Noosa River and Canal Cruises, who developed the idea. The sunset cruise includes entertainment, food and drinks all courtesy of big-hearted local business owners. There are about 20 tickets still available and there’s a desperate plea for more residents to sign up as there have been only 18 sold so far. Coal project a white elephant By JONATHON HOWARD GREENS candidate for the state seat of Noosa Joe Shlegeris has slammed Campbell Newman’s state funding of the Galilee Basin coal development as a “scandal”. He is now urging conservative voters to think about the financial implications of Queensland’s future commitment to coal, which he believes is a bottomless pit of government subsidies. “The $2 billion railway line, along with all of the other infrastructure, will be a total waste of money - no bank will fund this development because it is an obvious loser,” he said. Mr Shlegeris said the rail infrastructure can only deliver a return if the price of coal doubles from the present level and then stays high for decades. “The banks and the big investment houses know that won’t happen,” he said. “This government thinks that by wasting taxpayer money on a dud project that they can somehow make it work. “The Indian company behind this project is wisely sit-

Mr Shlegeris said the Queensland Government imagines that by wasting billions of taxpayer money it can reverse the worldwide trend away from coal. “China’s coal imports have fallen by half in the past year,” he said. “The cost of every superior
way of generating electricity is falling fast. “And there’s the nonsense about jobs. The government suggests that this development will create thousands of jobs. The people to fill those jobs won’t come off the dole queue. They’ll come out of jobs in other, generally smaller businesses. “Those businesses will be further starved of the skilled staff they require. “If this government were managing your family’s investments and made a one-way, all-in bet on coal, you would sack your manager today.”

Scholarship up for grabs EXAMS are finally over and Year 12 students are busy getting ready for Schoolies’ celebrations, but one Noosa District State High School student will have an extra reason to celebrate, thanks to the Bendigo Bank. The Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank has pledged its support to one local student when their new scholarship program application period opens in early December. Branch manager Geoff Edwards said providing support to a local student to further their tertiary education was part of the Community Bank branch’s commitment to the school and building a stronger community. “The high cost associated with tertiary study can have a significant impact on a young person’s ability to further their education,” he said.
“Because of this, some may not get the chance to achieve their academic dreams without some help. The scholarship is designed to assist regional and rural students planning to attend university for the first time in 2015.” Mr Edwards said the Cooroy Community Bank branch is proud to support local youth by furthering their education and easing some of the financial pressure of study. The scholarship will support a local student with tertiary and study related costs. The successful applicant will receive funding of $5000 for one year and depending on academic performance, the scholarship will be renewed to assist the second year of their study. Noosa District State High School principal Chris Roff said he was delighted with the news that another NDSHS student will attend
university next year, thanks to the generosity of the bank. “This is the third year this scholarship will be awarded and we’re delighted to be chosen as the school who will give a student this support to take their dreams to the next level,” he said. “Last year, the scholarship was awarded to local, Carlee Darben. She will soon enter her second year and is doing very well in her chosen field, as we all knew she would.” Applications are invited from eligible students from Monday 1 December 2014 on line at www. bendigoadelaide.com.au/scholarships and will be assessed in January 2015 after the application period expires on 23 January. The lucky recipient will be announced in time to put the funds towards set up costs for university study.
The NDSHS senior cohort surround Year 12 co-ordinator Bernard Weekes, Bendigo Bank's Geoff Edwards and principal Chris Roff.

PARTICIPANTS in the Jetts Noosa 12-Week Weight Loss Journey broke down some of their mental and physical barriers on Saturday during a private karate lesson. Expert Jetts’ trainer and fifth dan karate instructor Simon Golland, put the participants through their paces with board breaking, breathing exercises and posture techniques. Mr Golland teaches Okinawan Goju Ryu, a form of karate, at the Bicentienial Community Centre on Sunshine Beach Road. He said it was important the participants remained focused with their eye on a goal. “I spoke about barriers, things holding you back and about where they were and where they are now and where they hope to be,” he said. “Using this metaphor I then proceeded to board breaking, which had amazing feedback from the contestants… even the photographer had a go.” Things are starting to heat up for the participants who are now in the final four weeks. “We will be taking them to an even higher level,” Mr Golland said. “I took them up the stairs at Hasting Street with sandbags in their backpacks and exercised at the lookout then walked back and exercised on the beach. “They are all doing really well and losing weight and more im-

LETTERS Paradise lost I whole heartedly agree with you, Robert Cleveland (What I'd Like, Noosa Today Letters, 13 November), what a peaceful and quiet place it was when we arrived 13 years ago, no trouble parking in the middle strip of Poinciana Avenue, relaxed lifestyle and serenity. Where has it all gone? There is not a week goes by where we not have any events going on, all for the almighty dollar. I would like my paradise back, please. Yvonne Atanassoff, Tewantin.
Change vote IF A referendum should be the determination of a boundary change where the areas of Eumundi, Doonan and Verrierdale change from the Sunshine Coast Council to the Noosa Council, then all residents of the Sunshine Coast and Noosa Shire should vote on the proposed change. Such a change would have impacts on all residents of both councils, therefore more than just the EDV regions should be polled. Jeff Nuske, Noosa Heads.
Sun's still shining DON’T Lew Brennan, Jeff Nuske and John Lobb get tired of being angry and negative? Noosa is being well maintained. Council is easy to deal with, in my experience. Meetings aren’t held in secret like they are on the Sunshine Coast Council. Assets are being maintained (hey, point to the ones that aren’t, fellas). The sky isn’t falling. You lost the fight over de-amalgamation, guys. Get over it. G. Bain, Peregian.
Sound barrier WHAT has the Sunshine Coast Council done for the Eumundi, Doonan and Verrierdale residents who, unfortunately, live within their boundary? Well, if their plans for the airport extension and runway go ahead, they will allow us to experience what it is like to live under a flight path with large jets passing over our heads between 2000 and 4000 feet.
To Noosa police for keeping the beaches safe across the long weekend. To the local community for handing in those donations for the Christmas appeal. Local fire fighters and volunteers for taking part in back burning operations throughout Queensland.
To those visitors to the Noosa North Shore who left their rubbish and use the sand dunes as a toilet - their needs to be tougher penalties for this behaviour. To the infestation of midges. I’m a little concerned that Noosa Council is behind on the spraying to reduce this pesky blood sucker.
Post your letters to: 36 Mary St, Noosaville, 4566 or email: newsdesk@noosatoday.net.au
Is it coincidence that they will not allow the boundary change? The council recently published a double page advertisement promoting council agenda and opposing the EDV in the Eumundi Green magazine, but did not see the need to inform residents of the proposed flight paths in the same manner. Why has there been minimum consultation and information given in the affected areas and concentrated more on those that will benefit? It seems the developers will be the biggest winners. This is a pretty shoddy way to treat people you are supposed to represent. Margaret Kovacs, Eumundi.

Boundary umpire IT IS a relief to see correspondence from Dom Massoni (Failed Survey, Noosa Today Letters, 13 November) that seeks to assess the EDV boundary change proposal in a rational way rather than in the emotive language usually employed. I would therefore like to respond to his “three important points” in the same way. 1. The EDV survey to which he refers was a ‘self select’ format and may well have some small bias in the sample. However EDV has other data which confirms its view that a great majority of EDV residents support a change to the boundary. EDV group speaks for this majority. Does Mr Massoni have any (non-anecdotal) evidence that this is not the case? 2. Noosa Council is a geographically small and cohesive area and has elected to remain undivided in its representation. That is, every councillor represents the entire shire. As a much larger council, the Sunshine Coast Council has 10 divisions which each elect one councillor and only the mayor is elected by the entire shire. Arguably, divided councils such as SCR give more power to the mayor and the council staff while “undivided” councils have a more collegiate and corporate style. There are arguments in favour of both models but to suggest that any area is “unrepresented” because a council has no divisions is rubbish. 3. It is true that the Noosa Council CEO, in his report to council on the EDV submission, stated that, in his experience “rural/residential areas such as the EDV area are generally rates negative”. However he went on to say that in the EDV case this means “that any formal (financial) impact would be likely to be negligible”. On the other hand, of course, the mayor of the Sunshine Coast, who has access to the real data, in his submission to his council, has stated the EDV area is on average rates positive by around 10 per cent. The EDV group considers that all of these matters should really be resolved by submitting
THE Sunday heatwave prompted a swarm of caper white butterflies to spring. Marcus Beach resident Julie Hemsley took this snap for Noosa Today's Lenscape. Mrs Hemsley’s photo shows, in fine detail, the striking features of the caper white butterfly including the amazing colours. “This is one of the many on the plants in my back garden at Marcus Beach,” she said. “Good wildlife photos are always satisfying and taking butterfly photos is a fun challenge waiting for them to be still enough, on Sunday there were many to choose from.” In spring many caper white butterflies migrate to where caper shrubs and creepers are more common. They usually fly inland, west of the Great Dividing Range, but a westerly wind may blow them off course and they may then be seen by people living along the coast. They maintain a rapid flight about two to three metres above the ground during the day, resting on shrubs and trees at night. Mrs Hemsley used a Sony a55 digital SLR camera. the proposal to an independent umpire in the form of a boundary change commissioner as provided for under the Local Government Act. Such an umpire can then conduct a poll of all residents to accurately determine the level of support and can resolve the real financial impact as well as assessing all the other issues in the proposal. I cannot understand why the Sunshine Coast Council and the Sunshine Coast Alliance are so unwilling to support such an independent assessment. If they really believe the facts and community support are on their side, then maybe the Sunshine Coast Alliance can use its influence with its allied council to support the appointment of a boundary commissioner. Then we can get this issue settled once and for all. For its part I am sure the EDV group will
fully abide by the umpire’s decision. Alan Ramsey, Doonan.
Power position I COMPLETELY agree with Cr Stephen Robinson when he says “my position on the proposed boundary change issue remains with my full support for the Sunshine Coast Council’s position”. Unfortunately there is nothing new in this. How often in this so called 'democracy' do the people in power consider what the people want, we must only want and do what our betters and elders tell or allow us to do. We must not consult the people involved that would be a step way too far. Geoff Lewis, Doonan.
Directors wanted for Biosphere NOOSA Council is calling for expressions of interests for eight founding directors to steer the new Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation Ltd. “The establishment of the new management model puts the community squarely in the driver’s seat,” Mayor Noel Playford said. In the future, new directors can be elected by the foundation except for one director position that will be filled by council. Expressions of interest are being sought from people with skills across key areas such as high-level leadership, business management, economics, science, sustainability and communications. The new structure includes a charitable trust which will be able to attract funding from grants and donations, something that was not possible under the

former Noosa Biosphere management model. Council will contribute funding but will have no control over how the new structure allocates its funds. While the director positions are unpaid, the founding directors will play an important role in shaping Noosa’s future as they work towards enhancing its environmental, social, and economic sustainability. “Council will work with the founding directors to ensure a smooth transition to the new model,” Cr Playford said. The new management structure - which includes the creation of the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Trust, the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation Ltd and the Noosa Biosphere Community Incorporated Association - emerged from months of discussion with key community stakeholders.

Better building with a master IF building or renovating is on your ‘to do’ list in 2015, the best place to start is with Master Builders’ A Consumer Guide to Building workshop. Final dates for 2014 have been scheduled throughout November and now is the time to book your place. Master Builders’ Executive Director, Grant Galvin, said many people looked to renovate, build or just freshen their home in the New Year and understanding the process was the most important first step. “A lot of people start to think about an upcoming renovation or building project during the Christmas break - it’s a really popular time and that bit of Christmas cheer and the commitment to some bold New Year’s resolutions really drive people to get in and start projects they’ve only been dreaming about until now,” he said. “However, before you begin any significant building or renovation project, we highly recommend you get across how the process works by attending one of our consumer workshops. “The most common cause of stress, disputes and miscommunication in building is a lack of information about the building process - so our workshops are designed to arm consumers with the knowledge they need to better navigate the process.” The session is a four-hour workshop and covers a range of issues such as choosing
land, building your dream home, finding a Master Builder, contracts and variations, deposits and progress payments, building approvals and inspections, the construction phase and what to do before you move in. With a comprehensive section on improving communication with your builder, Master Builders’ aim is to ensure that homeowners know what to expect throughout the various stages of building and renovating. “Ultimately, we want to assist in reducing stress and paving the way to a smoother build so that everyone is happy,” Grant said. Master Builders has other advice on offer for anyone looking to build or renovate in the new year. “Do your research - if you live in south east Queensland, visit a display village where you can see the latest housing designs, trends and products on offer,” Grant said. “Master Builders recently opened a new display village at Springfield Lakes, with 23 quality homes and 17 Master Builders’ members on display - so there is definitely no shortage of inspiration on offer.” If you’re not in the proximity of a display village, Master Builders recommends to make sure you build with a Master Builder for peace of mind that your builder or trade contractor is appropriately licensed and has the support of Master Builders.
“We’ve just confirmed the last few dates of our consumer workshop for 2014, so if you’re planning to build or renovate in the New Year, we highly recommend you book your place now,” Grant said.

Bold new house of straw keeps wolf from door WITH more than 30 years’ experience in sustainable building methods and over 18 years’ building in Australia, Strawtec founder Frank Thomas is in Noosa, busy building homes with straw. But these are not homes the big bad wolf could blow over.
“It only produces carbon in transit. There is no wastage because what you don’t use, you put on the garden and there are no chemicals used.”
Built with layers of straw bales and sealed with clay render and lime wash, straw bale homes are proving a sustainable and solid building option, perfectly suited to the Noosa Biosphere.
Frank said straw bales allowed the home to “breathe”, creating cleaner air that was often better than what was outside, and the insulating power of the straw means there were no heating or cooling costs.
Last weekend, Frank was on hand to help one local family build their dream home with the help of keen volunteers and stacks of straw bales.
“This is a very healthy house,” he said.
The Lake MacDonald home sits on a one-acre block surrounded by natural bush, providing the ideal backdrop for a sustainable home.
The straw bales will be stacked six high and then covered in ...
“Using straw is cheaper, energy efficient, is a waste product and actually stores carbon,” he said.
A band of volunteers who were also keen to learn the art of sustainable building were on hand from Friday last week to help layer the straw bales, which took three days to do. The bales were stacked six high, with render applied directly to the bales once they had been placed.
The local family bought the block of land in January this year with dreams of building a natural, self-sufficient home that would benefit the local environment as well as their health.
A chicken coop, fruit tree orchid and vegetable patch, plus solar power and an on-site sewage and water system means this home is off the grid and the home owners couldn’t be happier.
Frank said he built with straw bales because of the many benefits to the environment as well as the benefits to the health of the home owners.
Frank believes straw bale homes are the way of the future and with 220 homes already under his belt, he hopes to build many more.

Q& A
Property Management by Karen Seskis
Hello Karen, thank you in advance for answering my question, I currently have my property under management and I only receive my statements when I ask for them, and was advised because I live locally to come and pick them up… the property manager told me that I don’t receive them because I have no email address, I asked if they could be posted but was told if they do that then I will be charged for it? Claire G, Tewantin.
Hello Claire, thank you for your letter, agents have a responsibility to ensure that you receive your statements every month and also your End of Financial Year statement. They can post these out to your nominated postal address and it would seem a little harsh to charge you for this service if you don’t have email! Perhaps a word to the principal might be in order!
Karen, We are about to vacate our rental property and as it is quite old there is a lot of issues we have been told that “fair wear and tear” will be considered but any damage will be our responsibility. What is the difference? John & Margaret K, Sunrise Beach. John & Margaret, this is a contentious issue when vacating, to simplify it Wear and Tear is basically anything that wears over a period of the tenancy through normal use, it can be worn carpet on a hallway, carpet that fades with sunshine from the windows, a burn mark in carpet is damage. Scuff marks on a wall that won’t wash off; if it can be cleaned off it is not wear and tear…if there is a hole in the wall that is damage. So the term ‘fair wear and tear’ is not speciically deined in the tenancy agreement, but it is considered to be changes that happen during normal use, or changes that happen with ageing. Hope that helps?

A little Tewantin magic THERE is something quite magical about the riverside town of Tewantin. Located just 10 kilometres west of Noosa Heads, Tewantin is a bustling business centre which is the proud home of the new Noosa Shire Council. The many beautifully landscaped parks and streets, lined with large Poinciana trees, make Tewantin a beautiful place for a family holiday or a relaxing day out. Located throughout the town, you can also find historical buildings and sites which tell the story of a humble settlement and gives the town a unique atmosphere. In the 1860s, European settlers arrived in the area originally inhabited by the Gubbi Gubbi/Kabi Kabi people. Tewantin soon began to grow with the movement of people and goods between Brisbane and Gympie with most historic buildings, such as the police
station and Royal Mail Hotel, dating back to the early 1880s. Traveller numbers fell when the railway opened in 1981, but by then holiday-makers had discovered Tewantin’s appeal. Today, Tewantin still holds all the charm of a small settlement, despite the bustling business centre and the growing appeal of affordable housing for young families starting out. According to RP Data, 254 homes were sold in the past 12 months, with a median sales price of $420,000, and 41 units were sold with a median sales price of $310,000. The Australian Bureau of Statistics found the population growth for Tewantin to be slow, with only a one per cent increase from 2006 to 2011. The most common age group in Tewantin is 0-14 years old, with households primarily couples with children paying between $1800 and $2400 per month in mortgage repayments. The iconic war memorial stands proud in the middle of town.

It’s just funny, to be frank WHAT would happen if Frank Spencer, that well-meaning but incompetent, inept, infuriating and injury-prone man, loved by millions around the world, had his own stage show? Between the years 1973 to 1975 and for the final time in 1978, Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em delighted television audiences. Lead character, Frank Spencer, was played wonderfully by Michael Crawford. Such was the character’s memorable impact that Frank’s best known catch phrases are still used today. Ask people what one of the famous lines from the show was and they’ll probably say, "The cat did a whoopsie in my beret" or "Oh Betty". Comedian and impersonator Robert Pearson said he used to perform Frank Spencer and it was always a hit. “Most people over the age of 45 know who Frank Spencer is, I used to do a little bit of Frank in my own show and it got the biggest laugh,” he said. “So one day while writing new material I thought, what would happen if Frank Spencer had his own stage show?” The result of this brainwave is a stage show called An Audience with Frank Spencer with Robert Pearson performing as Frank Spencer and George Harvey as the perfect straight man. With crazy routines, stunts, hilarious dialogue, great music and special guests Billy Connolly, Sammy Davis Jr, Dean Martin and Forrest Gump, this show is bound to raise your spirits and have you laughing. This is a tribute to a wonderful character and you catch it at Tewantin Noosa RSL on Saturday 22 November in the South Bar for free. Book for dinner to make sure you get a prime seat on 5447 1766.

Hungry for more By JONATHON HOWARD THE highly anticipated sequel to The Hunger Games has shot into BCC Noosa Cinemas this week, following a midnight screening last night. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1, the first cinematic chapter of the final instalment in the dystopian film series, is the most political entry yet. The movie, directed by Francis Lawrence, opens after the events of Catching Fire. Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) is in the psychiatric ward of District 13 where the rebel alliance, led by the resolute President Coin (Julianne Moore) and her Dick Cheneyish advisor, Plutarch Heavensbee (played by the late Philip Seymour Hoffman), is readying for war with the Capitol. Katniss is suffering from the third Quarter Quell, where she ended the games by firing a charged arrow into the game's force field, shattering it to pieces. The move, according to Coin, “electrified the nation,” and the oppressed districts are rallying behind their arrow-slinging rebel figurehead, or “Mockingjay”. Fans of The Hunger Games books continue to get behind the cinematic series which is promising a highly charged final instalment. WIN TICKETS: This is your chance to win a double pass to see The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 at BCC Cinemas. Simply email your full name and mobile phone number to competitions@noosatoday.net. au

TWO local artists have joined creative forces to present an exhibition of their innovative and imaginative works at the Pomona Railway Station Gallery. Gabi Dick and Tricia Bradford are both well-known for their often unusual and dramatic techniques, with the exhibition highlighting how their works contrast yet complement the other; a synergy of their friendship and artistic talents. The exhibition, titled Synchronicity, will feature Gabi’s diverse work that ranges from exploring the botanical world and the stages of plant growth to the contemporary depiction of coastal waters and her desire to incorporate many aspects of the Bradshaw rock art that she encountered while sailing in the Kimberley. Tricia will present large, colourful, abstract watercolour works that will surprise and impress, with fish and fowl as the main inspiration. Tricia’s work capture an element of fun with each piece’s subject matter not always visible at first sight. Synchronicity will be on display at the Pomona Railway Station Gallery, 10 Station Street, Pomona, from 6 December to 8 January.
Tricia Bradford's watercolour paintings can often feature subject matter that isn't always obvious at first. Gabi Dick's works contrast and complement Tricia Bradford's in this unique exhibition. Picture: TONY WELLINGTON Things are heating up at Club Cooroy.
The silent struggles behind the scenery By KEITH JACKSON PRESENT day Noosa (its name probably deriving from the Malay word for island) has always been a place of incredible, God-given beauty. And while the footsteps of history have not kept nature pristine, down the years Noosa has retained an unusually exquisite quality. At the same time, it has also acquired a reputation as a most desirable destination for settlers and visitors. Noosa, one of the most recognised place-names in Australia with a brand value of a billion dollars, is an elegant town, blending commercial acuity with natural splendour. But, given that nature can so readily succumb to commerce, such an impeccable fusion, did not happen by accident. Which is where Councillor Tony Wellington’s just published book, Noosa & Cooloola, comes in.
The large format hardcover is an unusual work in that it juxtaposes stunning colour images of Noosa with the gritty story of the struggles, compromises, setbacks and triumphs that created the place we know today. Noosa & Cooloola is essentially the story of the Noosa Parks Association (NPA), but it is also the story of modern-day Noosa. Cr Wellington relates the history in a series of thematic episodes, many based around locales such as the north shore, the river and lakes, the national parks and, of course, Hastings Street. NPA was established in 1962 and since then it has not just been along for the ride – its hand has been on or near the tiller for all those 52 years. It evolved as a veritable conscience – and a sometimes fierce one – which, from its earliest days, understood the realities and intricacies of Noosa and the need to maintain a balance between the natural and the material. NPA’s founder, the late Dr Ar-
thur Harrold, knew that to achieve this balance NPA needed to be “first and foremost, an activist organisation and not a social club”. Some of its members still remain embarrassed about this description. Tony Wellington reveals that, in the early days, “many, perhaps most, local residents reviled (Harrold); his vision ran very much against the popular grain.” And a flick through recent letters to local newspapers shows that, despite the demonstrable achievements of Dr Harrold and his successors, a residual vexatiousness towards NPA lingers. But, as events have demonstrated – especially the heroic rescue mission to save Noosa and its values from the impact of a union that would have weakened both – these dissident voices, despite their shrillness, are at the margin. Noosa & Cooloola connects readers with the great beauty and environmental fragility of Noosa and the vigilance required to protect it from ignorance, smallmindedness and greed.
Noosa did not get where it is by accident; it got there because many people decided they could live a good life in an idyllic environment, and, in this shared vision, found the leadership to get there. But that was not enough. They also had to harness the audacity and skill to fight effectively to maintain the vision. Tony Wellington has documented this and much more in lucid, readable prose which is accompanied by an abundance of splendid photography, most of it his own. This is a book for both coffee table and brain; the absorbing story of the place you chose to live; and a great book for all seasons. Potholes like this... seriously.
Welcome to my nightmare Life of
brine PHIL JARRATT GOOD morning fellow Masters of the Universe, and welcome to my Brisbane, one of my favourite bits of my Australia. Firstly, fellas, if I can just spell out the rules of engagement, if for no one else’s, then for the benefit of Six-Pack Vlad, who may have thought he had heard and seen a welcoming

fireworks display as he flew in late last night, but in fact was witnessing the sinking of his naval presence by the might of the Brisbane River Water Police. So suck on that, Six-Pack. But getting back to the business at hand, here at my G20 we’ll play by my rules, so first names only please, or nick-names even better, and please pay attention up the back there, Barry and Sauerkraut. Secondly, brevity is the soul of wit, so all speeches limited to five minutes except for me, because I’m not very witty at the best of times. Thirdly, no punching below the belt, eyepoking, dacking or shirt-fronting. And just to be clear on this last, Steve “The Mountie” Harper has already had a frank and fruitful exchange with Six-Pack in the men’s dunny this morning and extracted from him a solemn agreement to behave. Fourthly, and finally, may I remind all of you that we are here to discuss the most pressing global issue confronting the world’s most important people, namely making more money. So everyone will kindly stick to the script, and not go off on frivolous tangents such as the potential destruction of the planet through climate change, and yes, I’m looking at you Bazza, you cheeky monkey.
Now, as Prime Minister of the host nation, and therefore the most important person in the room, may I kick off proceedings by telling you a little bit about what it’s like to be me. In the 14 months since almost half of Australia’s voting public put me into power, along with Clive Palmer, Jacqui Lambie and other assorted nutcases with absolutely no agenda other than to pick up a $200k pay packet, I have stopped the boats, as Six-Pack Vlad now knows, killed the carbon tax, banned the burqa, unbanned the burqa, set the broadband network back by about two generations, and fixed up several nasty potholes in my Sydney electorate that were a significant danger to cyclists. Now I know that some of you are involved in fighting wars, resettling millions of refugees, combating pandemics that threaten millions, and pandering to the fertile imaginations of a few misguided climate scientists who have obviously never read the Bible or the Encyclopedia Brittanica. But these potholes were really, really big. Just sayin’. Anyway, mates, I hope to get around the room this morning and give you all a big welcoming Brisvegas hug, and for the really lucky ones, a quick seminary nut-tweak. And speaking of Brisbane, we’ll be making history con-

50 NOOSA TODAY | Thursday, 20 November, 2014
cerning this wonderful city later in the weekend when we announce that Sydney, which is only an hour’s flight south, will become the world centre of G20 infrastructure, whatever that means. So Brisvegans, walk tall this weekend, the complete disruption of your city for our little power trip has all been worth it. He’s back! NOT that Julian Wilson ever really went anywhere, but even his nearest and dearest would have to admit the Coolum superstar has had a shocker of a year on the World Championship Tour. In 10 events contested so far, Julian has gone further than round three just once, not exactly the form expected of one of the most talented surfers in the world who usually figures in most “future world champion” conversations. But since Julian defeated Brazilian teenager Gabriel Medina at Supertubos, Portugal, a couple of years ago to claim his one and only tour victory, his claims to a future world title have been usurped somewhat by the younger and hungrier brigade, led by Medina but closely followed by John Florence of Hawaii and Nat Young from California. When you look at the “next big things” of recent years, only Jeremy Flores (also in his mid-20s) has had a bigger question mark hanging over his future career. It’s not that Julian has been doing anything wrong in particular. He shows flashes of brilliance almost every time he paddles out, but none of that matters if you can’t win enough heats. Early in his career, you could sometimes see him give up a heat long before it was over, but that certainly wasn’t the case in 2014. He definitely had the fire in the belly, but just could not post the results, with the result that going into the Vans Triple Crown in Hawaii last weekend, he was outside the cut for 2015 in the main game (the World Championship rankings) and right on the cut in the Qualifying Series. At this crucial stage of his career he could not rely on a sparkling performance in the Billabong Pipeline Masters next month to see him through for next year. He had to back up with some big results on the QS. All of this would have been playing on his mind at the Reef Hawaiian Pro, held in substantial Haleiwa bowls, grading down to mid-size ramps by the final rounds. Julian responded by showering brilliance on every wave that came near him. Watching his semi-final performance on Sunday morning, I began to worry that he had peaked too early, but then he came out in the final and combo-ed the field with two insane and cleverly connected airs in the first 10 minutes. He was unbeatable until Hawaii’s Dusty Payne took on the challenge with two nine-plus punts that were just slightly better. Jules had to settle for second, but he was shedding no tears, with enough points on the QS to get him back on tour in 2015. Now, about that world title ...

The good old drop Here are the top ten benefits of making the switch to almond milk. 1. Heart health - your heart will get a kick out of almond milk thanks to no cholesterol or saturated fat. The low sodium levels and healthy fats, such as omega fatty acids, will help prevent high blood pressure and heart disease. 2. Strong bones - while there isn’t as much calcium as cow’s milk, almond milk does offer 30 per cent of the recommended daily amount, as well as 25 per cent of the recommended amount of vitamin D, reducing the risk of arthritis and improving immune function.
3. Weight management - one cup of almond milk contains only 60 calories, opposed to a whopping 146 calories from whole cow’s milk. 4. Blood sugar - almond milk that is free from additives is low in carbs, which means there is no drastic rise in blood sugar levels, reducing the risk of diabetes. Due to the low glycaemic index, your body will use the carbs as energy rather than storing the sugars are fat. 5. Glowing skin - With 50 per cent of the recommended daily amount of vitamin E packed into almond milk, your skin will get a healthy dose of antioxidant properties essential to your skin’s health. 6. No lactose - almond milk contains no lactose, which is great news for those who have difficulty digesting the sugar in cow’s milk. 7. Great taste - if you’re turned off by the taste of cow’s milk, then almond milk is for you. The two taste nothing alike, with almond milk boasting its own unique flavour many describe as light and crisp. 8. No cooling - you don’t need to keep almond milk in the fridge so it’s handy for taking to work or on
camping trips. 9. Strong muscles - although almond milk has lower levels of protein per serving when compared to
cow’s milk, it does have plenty of B vitamins such as iron and riboflavin, which are both important to muscle growth and healing.
10. Digestive health - almond milk contains almost one gram of fibre per serving, which is good news for the digestive system. 1163937-MB47-14
YOU can be forgiven for screwing your nose up at the thought of replacing cow’s milk with almond milk, but did you know there are a number of benefits to making the change? Whether you’re a vegan, sensitive to milk, or just don’t like the taste of the cow’s stuff, then almond milk could be a great alternative. Although there are many benefits to almond milk, it is important to remember it doesn’t contain as much calcium or protein as cow’s milk, so it may need to be found elsewhere.

Where the zest is best David said the majority of herbs used are grown in the walled, raised garden beds specifically designed to grow produce for Thomas Corner. “This way we can control the quality of the herbs and pick them on a daily basis,” he said. “The freshness and pristine condition of each product brings a vibrancy and unique life to every dish that leaves our kitchen. We create our own micro mix made up of a variety of 12 or more different herbs and leaves that we use as a special garnish on some of our dishes. So often it is the finishing herbs, oils and vinegars that differentiate a dish from good to something exceptional.” The outside dining area is the perfect spot to watch early evening activities on the Noosa river foreshore. Between 3pm and 5.30pm daily Thomas Corner offers “Plenty for 20”, which is a selection of specials for just $20. Freshly shucked oysters and French sparkling, two glasses of wine with cheese and lavosh crackers or two bottles of beers and a bowl of chilli salted fries with some house made malt vinegar aioli are some of what’s on offer. This is complimented by the knowledgeable, friendly wait staff accompanied by soft candle lighting making Thomas Corner a charming place to dine

THOMAS Corner eatery is plating up a new summer menu with its signature focus on local seasonal produce, great wines and warm friendly service. The menu is inspired by local and regional seasonal produce and its little surprise with the kitchen under the capable hands of David Rayner, national award winner as one of Australia’s chefs best utilising local and regional produce in the delicious produce awards. With such credentials, it is no wonder the new menu shines with freshness and flavours. Mooloolaba tuna, Caboolture berries, Cedar Street haloumi, finger limes, wild caught North Queensland prawns, handpicked Gympie beans are just some of the regional produce featured on the summer menu. “It is difficult to name a favourite dish as there are so many taste sensations waiting to be sampled including steamed clams, verjus, chilli, tarragon, green shallot and lemon oil or Australian asparagus, Cedar Street haloumi, grapes and golden breadcrumbs,” David said. “Proving to be popular is the fireroasted Cone Bay barramundi, cucumber, navel orange and toasted sesame, soy and lime dressing. The light summer flavours are combined to make a balanced dish which provides the perfect showcase for the moist, fleshy white fish.”

Streets sizzle with festive flavour THE Junction Flava Festival was a huge hit, once again, with record crowds attending despite the heat wave. While it was hot, hot, hot, event-goers kept cool thanks to the combined efforts of Village Bicycle and Shades Cafe and Wine Bar, who manned the bar and the Quenchers juice bar which helped keep everyone refreshed. People were even riding the Quenchers’ bike to power their own smoothie or juice. Event organisers said numbers were up 20 per cent on last year’s attendance, which is even more impressive given the weather. Local restaurant offerings proved a big hit with the Canteen pulled pork sliders popular, along with Ipazzi’s tiramisu, Fiona’s Fancies chocolate mousse, Gelato Classico’s pannacotta gelato and the Seafood Market’s prawn skewers and freshly shucked oysters. The return of the Waiter’s Race was a highlight of the day with the top honours going to Quenchers who took home the trophy and $100 cash.

Clearing the BloCks CREATE a wealthy life of meaning and impact. Attract more abundance, good health, money, relationships. Clear the inabilities to receive what we long for. What keeps us stuck? Create positive experiences to help clear the blocks. Enhance your well-being. Clear negative beliefs. Understand what we need to do to allow the laws of attraction to work. Clear limiting beliefs stopping us from receiving. Clear the set of beliefs society has about the act of receiving. Become more self-empowered. Resolve any shame or embarrassment around money. There cannot be giving without also receiving. Be able to receive fully, graciously and with love and delight. Using eft-emotional freedom (tapping on meridian points) plus other techniques, Ruth will assist you to clear blockages on all levels to gain freedom from limiting beliefs that are stopping you from receiving more in life. Worth every moment THE most exciting event on the Environment Centre’s calendar this year is the coming launch of the association’s long-awaited 50th anniversary book. Noosa Parks Association had a dream to produce a historical book of the environment battles won over the years together with stunning photographs of our area. Of course, the sought-after and popular author and photographer Tony Wellington was NPA’s choice. The book, titled, “Noosa and Cooloola” will have its launch on 26 November at the Environment Centre with the wonderful Sandra in charge of catering with her “Dream Team”. These coffee table books are certain to be in great demand as Christmas presents for family and friends and will be available in local bookstores and outlets or at www.noosaparks.org.au They are priced at $44.95. On Saturday 6 December, the Environment Centre will open to

the public, showcasing the wonderful displays as part of the 21st birthday celebrations of Wallace Park. Come and join in on the day, visit the Environment Centre, talk to long-time volunteer Sandra, and learn about the many activities the Noosa Parks Association has to offer. The annual members Christmas Party is on 14 December. Sandra will be overseeing the catering, as usual. The popular Christmas hamper raffle will be drawn on that day. This year, the first prize is a wonderful piece of artwork created by one of Queensland’s unique and internationally acclaimed artists, the late Christopher May. Donated by Wendy May, the Rainbow Trout is one of a fish series produced under the name Pencilart. These all have a very unusual and mysterious quality of a fishing scene drawn microscopically into the eye of the fish. This is a limited edition print with a certificate of

Breaming with confidence By JACK MANGROVE WARMER water temperatures, mean the start of pelagic* season. With the wind back up offshore angler where again disappointed last weekend, but if you managed to get out earlier in the week Chardon’s was one of the standouts. There were some nice venus tusk fish as well as snapper and pearl perch. North Reef was also working well with some quality moses perch and pearl perch. With the warmer temperatures comes warmer water, and we should see a real influx of quality pelagic moving in around our reefs. In the Noosa River we have seen some quality small kingfish following bait in on the last of the run in tide, live bait has been the most productive with a couple of good sized fish taken over the last week. The river has been the saviour for anglers with the wind over the weekend. The jacks where again in good number with the area around Johns Landing very productive at night. There has also been report of good fish around the structure near the marina at Tewantin. For those of you into bass fishing, the everglades has been going off, you are looking for those areas with a slightly cooler water temp, so find those deeper holes and you should clean up. The area around woods bay has again been alive with nice tailor and trevally, the bite first thing in the morning has been the most productive with fish over the two kilogram mark not uncommon.
Cooroy Automotive Services sponsored the monthly Pairs challenge last Thursday. The jackpot went off to runners up team Walter Horn and Bruce Coventry. Regular visitors Les James and Reg McComb took home first prize. Tuesday jackpot pairs winners were Roy Wall and Sandra French. Bob Andrews and Sam Hands were runners up. Cooroy Lifestyle Real Estate is sponsoring a $50 consistency prize this week. Each player on the winning end will score their winning bowls. The player with the highest score will win the prize money. - Julie Ainscough NOOSA HEADS BOWLS Each year, at this time, the various club champions from our club and Tewantin-Noosa face off in matches for the Titanic Challenge. This time it’s Noosa’s turn to host, with play, featuring the top bowlers in the region to take place this Friday, under lights, commencing at 6pm. Following a bye, Noosa is back in action for a night pennant, journeying to Pacific Paradise this Thursday. Attention turns to social events at this time of the year and a very successful prawn and steak night was held last Saturday - well attended by both bowlers and members of the affiliated fishing club. A group of Noosa players is scheduled to have lots of fun, and bowls, with a trip away to Rainbow. - The Chalker
Five-year-old Sabrina Hutton christened her new fishing combo with this quality bream, which she caught off the beach at Culgoa Point on a live worm. The crab situation on the river has been a little average, but with the forecast rain for later in the week we should see them walking, fresh mullet has been the most successful of the baits, but an old mate of mine recons that chicken frames soaked in tuna oil are the go. On the North Shore there have been some great report of good size whiting in numbers in the earlier part of last week, they were more up toward the camping area near Teewah. On behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! *Pelagic fish live in the pelagic zone of ocean or lake waters – being neither close to the bottom nor near the shore.

When life’s in the balance IT was one of those times when training suddenly becomes a reality. The time was 6am; the date, Thursday 13 November 2014. At the eastern end of Noosa’s Main Beach six members of Donald McKill’s Active Member Training Group were going through their paces when someone drew attention to a swimmer lying face down on the water’s edge, some 100 metres west of the team. The realisation that it was of a serious nature clicked in and the group responded immediately. Some ran to the patient while other team members grabbed the necessary gear. Reaching their patient it was discovered that it was a male aged in his early sixties lying face down on the water’s edge semi-conscious and with facial cuts. With the patients’ position and facial injuries he was treated as a suspected spinal injury. The team responded accordingly. All necessary steps were taken and the patient was kept under observation until the arrival of paramedics. Once the patient’s condition was stable he was then transported to hospital.

On Monday morning club members who were involved in the rescue were over the moon when their patient walked into the clubhouse to shake hands and say thank you. Job well done. While the off-duty lifesavers worked on their patient it became apparent that - despite there being only very small surf - he had been heavily dumped face first on to a sandbank. Here in lies a lesson for all our visitors who are inexperienced in surf to remember: surf does not have to be big to be dangerous. All that is required is a small dumping wave, a sandbank and no knowledge and it is an accident waiting to happen. Swim by all means, but take care. For surf safety, accept your lack of experience and swim accordingly. Also as in this case, if you swim before the lifeguards or lifesavers who are on duty, don’t hesitate to talk to any that are on
the beach training. Talking to tourists is part of our job; on duty or off. Regardless of helicopters, jet rescue boats, rescue skis and IRB, swimming is and always will be for the dedicated patrolman the basis of all our work. With this in mind, the Noosa club will for its 12th consecutive year, conducted the annual Shirley Strachan Memorial Swim. The outstanding success of this event is due to two factors. One is the organisers Bruce and Sandy Warren and the other is the continual sponsorship and support of McDermott Aviation. Bruce, wife Sandy and John McDermott, who is also a member of the Noosa club, have worked well together over the 14 years as a team and it is hoped they will continue to do so in the years ahead. The swim will take place on 4 January, over a distance of 1.2km and it is open to all active Noosa members from 11 to 60-plus years. Registration will take place at 7.30am at the Noosa club on race day and the swim will start at 9am, and entry is free. Apart from being the organiser for this event, Warren made his mark in the club when down through the years he worked as the

Don McKill swim coach for the bronze training teams and many a member has him to thank for his coaching and advice during their very vital basic training years. Sunday afternoon, some 30 old boys and girls gathered on the verandah of the Sunshine Beach Surf Club and it was indeed a very successful afternoon. Among those present were Mike and Hillary Harding, just two of the team responsible for the club's Nippers being formed.

The Sunshine Beach SLSC Nippers took to the water at the Maroochydore Junior Carnival. Picture: SURF SHOTS
THE Maroochydore Junior Carnival kicked off in magnificent conditions – the sun shone brightly and the decent sized swell allowed all under-11 to under-15 competitors from across the Sunny Coast to flex their muscles while testing their skills. The march-past kicked off the day in style with Sunshine Beach coming up trumps – a third place – then into the surf the Nippers went where Sunshine Beach competitors took on the conditions with great enthusiasm. Each competitor gave it their all and should be proud
of their achievements. With this event being only the second carnival in the under-11 to under-14 age division, the under-11s did brilliantly showing lots of Sunshine spirit and courage. From the surf swim to the Cameron relay at the end of a very long day, their perseverance and endurance resulted in some fantastic placings. The under-12 to under-15 Sunshine girls and boys shone brightly also. Their commitment to training and the Sunshine Beach Nipper program has made them some of the best performers on the coast with each
of them tackling large conditions in the swim, boards, iron and Cameron relay. There was great team spirit with competitors stepping up to help from other Cameron teams, and the older Nippers cheering on the new, younger Nippers during the day’s proceedings was also commendable and great to see. Fantastic results across the age groups resulted in Sunshine Beach finishing second overall behind Maroochydore. Special mention to Ruby Nolan from the under-13s who was awarded a new fibreglass board for winning the under-13 female iron.
TO make it through as one of the eight finalists required for the final of this year's 110-metre Noosa Gift, the athletes had to contest seven heats and four semi-finals in late afternoon heat of 34 degrees. The final, run in blustery conditions under lights, was won by Chris Mansell of the Redlands Athletic club. Running off a mark of 9.25m he clocked a time of 11.27 seconds. In second place was Tremaine Peters off 8m in a time of 11.35s and in third Zayne Buckley 16.5m in 11.41s. For Buckley it was a good meet, for earlier in the evening he won the final of the Pacific Ford 70m dash. Running off 15m he came home in 7.26s. The final of the gift was well presented with the runners being led on to the track by the Tewantin Noosa Pipe Band. The pipes, which have played for the gift for years, were well received, and following this the athletes were introduced. Speaking after the race Mansell, who hails from Brisbane, said: “I am really happy with my win. Last year I reached the semi-final but got eliminated so this makes up for that.” Away from the track he works in civil engineering and as a schoolboy became one of the nation's major prospects when he was clocked 10.69s to break the Queensland under-17 100m record. In other lead-up events, Miriam Penui, who hails from Rabual, won the AccomNoosa 110m Ladies Invitational final in 13.05s, and in the Murray Surveyors 300m Gallop final first home was Madelene Attley. Running off 48m she finished in a time of 33.12s. Attley, who is a student at the St Aidan’s School in Brisbane is the current Australian 400m All Schools champion for her age group. The gift, held at the Girrawein Sports Complex and run by the Noosa Little Athletics, was attended by over 200 junior and senior athletes - the seniors contesting the major events. Ian Smith, co-ordinator for the track events, said: “We are very grateful to our major sponsor The Noosa Surf Club who sponsored the gift and also to AccomNoosa, Murray Surveyors and Pacific Ford. There are many other smaller sponsors and without everyones support we couldn’t run the event.” Apart from the track events another highlight was the award of the Athletes Development Program Training Scholarships. Awarded the ADP Scholarships were: Summer Johnson, Ethan Williams, Casey Paynwe, Bethany Jones, Chase Stone, Owen Carey-Foster, Samantha Stanley and Samantha Hooper.

Hats on in superhero scorcher HATS off to those who played and especially as they all wore hats in extreme heat. The T-ballers all turned out in super hero gear and all are showing great improvement especially Charlotte and Dylan. The Under 13s all had good games and the stand outs were Ethan with a home run and Lily and Tane took catches, Jed M showed good sportsmanship dropping a catch on purpose to let a young player get to base. The Under 15s was also good; Chase and Ashley hit three baggers, Ethan and Jedd picked up a double play while Molly, Ethan and Eden all took catches. In a lone hand in the 15s Riley bagged two home runs. The big three in the Under 17s all got home runs (Leigh, Lewis and Riley) while Emma and Liam
got double plays, Emma also took a catch as did Lewis. Two new players William and Dylan from Mt Isa were welcomed. The seniors had a fair bit going on, and the triple plays from Jed and Junior have to be acknowledged and again the fly catches came - Jed 3, Junior 2, Waz, Greg C, BJ, Jed T, Dave and Rick all took 1 each. Busy week for tennis By DES ADSETT THE Coolum Tennis Club has had a busy week with Senior Club Championships, Junior Finals and an Open Day. On Thursday morning, the Ladies B Grade Doubles fielded five very competitive teams in a round Robin. Defending champions were Lynn Heath and Joy Abacair. Unfortunately, Joy couldn’t play, so Margaret Webb very ably partnered Lynn to be runners-up even though they beat the winning pair in a tiebreaker set. The champions on the day were Jenny Boland in her first year with the club, and Victoria Edinburgh Windsor. On Thursday night, the Men’s A and B Grade pairs were played. The winners in A Grade were Adam Spence and James Rubulis with Kurt Johnson and Sam Duggan the runners-up. Scott Derham has booked a permanent spot on the board as the B Grade
winners. This year, Scott partnered Matt Anderson to beat Steve Down and Tim Weire on a count back. The Mixed B Grade Tennis Championships are scheduled for Thursday, 20 November. The date of the A Grade Mixed and Junior Championships should be available this week. As well as the club Championships, the club followed up last week’s Tennis Tacular with a Free Tennis Day. As part of both these promotions, the club had competitions for a lucky winner and the people who were closest to the number of balls in the box. The winner of the major prize was Lou Ninnes. Lou gets to choose from either a Family Pass to the Brisbane International or two hours court hire on the Pat Rafter court valued at $400. The winners of the Guess the Ball competition each win prize packs of tennis gear including a towel, backpack,
tennis balls. The winners are Daray King and Paul Hardcastle. They have been notified by email and are free to collect their prizes from coach Andrew Ash at the tennis club. At the Free Tennis Day, some of Seniors and Juniors had fun trying to outdo each other on the Speed Serve. There was much discussion on the best place to stand and the best type of serve. The top serve of the day was 144 km. Our next big function at tennis is the Christmas party. All tennis players and their families are welcome. The club will be presenting the winners of the Club Championships. The function starts at 3pm with tennis. The club provides Christmas ham for the celebrations. Take note of Sunday, 7 December for all Juniors, Seniors, Social Players and other court users. All are welcome. Wear something Christmassy.

Hats off to great refs By ANITA ANDERSON KEEPING in Touch... I’d like to start off by thanking our referees for their time and effort that they put in each and every week to enable our games to be played. Please make sure they know they’re appreciated. We were lucky enough to play last week’s games before the heat wave set in, but there was still scorching action to be seen on the paddock. In the U10s Mexican Amigos had a win over the Purple Panthers with Joel and the Dwyer sisters leading the way for their teams. Touchdowns were the order of the day between Screaming Iguanas and GSLC (boys) with the Iguanas in front at the final siren. Tyler, Amoy, Charlie and Jarvis had great games. Congratulations to the Noosa Ladies Masters team who came away with a silver medal at the recent Pan Pacific Masters Games held at the Gold Coast, a mighty effort. 2014 summer singles and doubles table tennis championships WITH only two weeks to go in the qualifying rounds, the top six in each grade are almost set, with maybe the sixth position still open to several players. In past series, spectators have witnessed the ultimate winner coming from the last qualifying spot as a blinder on finals night can reap big rewards. A Grade Kye McDonald has incredibly maintained his number one ranking by remaining undefeated through six rounds. He is almost oddson to take the trophy, however the group of big guns includ-
ing Bill Brown, Roger Gore and Jordan Brown, that will be staring him down, come the finals, are proven past winners. Jordan has swept to the front in the doubles in recent weeks and will unlikely to be challenged. B Grade Steve Gardner has attracted the spotlight this season with the only blemish being a three-set loss to Kye who demonstrated the road upwards into A grade, despite it being a given at this stage, is a steep ride. However, the B grade trophy looks a certainty for Steve even though there will be staunch resistance from John Murphy, Bernhard Trauer, Eli Kalugin and Martyn Clarke. No surprise that Steve has found himself in the number one position in doubles also albeit a narrower one than the singles.
C Grade Young Lucas Gore unfortunately may miss the finals due to a neck injury leaving C Grade somewhat wide open. Sunny Lidden though has recently found form and may upset the likes of Brad Muller and Matthew Duncan come finals night. Richard has strengthened his grip on the doubles trophy and the engraving could start now. Competition night is Wednesday from 7pm and there is also a practice session on Monday nights from 7.15pm. Social groups meet three afternoons a week. All sessions are held at the Bicentennial centre Sunshine beach. Call 5474 5526 for any further information.
Medal masters THE Pan Pacific Masters Games showcased the talented pool of athletes aged over 30, and Noosa can be proud with two of our own bringing home gold in the indoor rowing. Held over 10 days from 1 November, the games saw more than 14,000 competitors aged 30 and over, from 20 countries, compete in 42 different sports. Local lifesaver Roberta Gordon and dentist Andy Meek, who train at Franks Gym, Noosa Junction, competed in the indoor rowing championships at the Gold Coast games. Roberta took our four gold and Andy can add two gold medals to the haul. At 67, Roberta won gold in the 65-69 age group in the 500m championship, breaking her own Australian record by 2.2 seconds with a time of 1:52 minutes, putting her fourth in the world rankings for indoor rowing. Gold in the four minute, 1000m race and 2000m races completed Roberta’s dream run at the Pan Pacific Masters games and is a great achievement for someone who only started rowing in February this year. “Rowing has improved my cardiovascular fitness, strength, flexibility and core strength and I love that rowing is non-impact, especially after many years of running,” she said. “Rowing is a world-wide sport that is very strong overseas and is growing steadily in Australia.” Former karate champion, Andy, won gold in the 50-55 age group at the Queensland titles and went on to win gold in the 500m and 1000m races. Roberta’s partner and trainer, Rob Cossalter, did Queensland proud bringing home three gold and one silver medal at the Pan Pacific games.
Champions: Andy Meek, Roberta Gordon and Rob Cossalter all brought home gold from the Pan Pacific Masters Games on the Gold Coast.

Smith clean bowled by Lachie as dream comes true TEWANTIN-NOOSA Cricket Club’s opening bowler and teenager Lachie Gunner had one of his dreams come true when he recently bowled to an Australian Test batsman. Lachie had won a Commonwealth Bank Cricket Club’s competition, and travelled to Sydney with his grandfather, Queensland Over-70’s Team player, Randall Woodley to meet some of the Australian Test Cricket Team. Lachie’s mother, Sandra Gunner had entered the competition with a twenty-five word composition on why some members of her family would like to spend a morning with a group of Australian cricketers and what they would do. Sandra suggested that her 16-year-old son would like to bowl to them and his 74-year-old grandfather, who still plays senior cricket, would act as wicketkeeper. The Australian cricketers turned out to be Test wicket-keeper, Brad Haddin, batsman Steve Smith, who some predict will be a future Test captain and off-spinner Nathan Lyon. Lachie and Randall undertook some warm-ups and pre-game drills before Steve Smith padded up to face Lachie. On a cold windy morning, Lachie was able to swing the ball both ways and in his second over he clean bowled the Aussie batsman, much to the delight of his team mates. Randall managed to take most of the balls allowed to pass by Smith in spite of a broken finger. Later the trio of players signed the wickets and the ball used in the event. The morning was videoed and will soon appear on the Commonwealth Bank Cricket Club’s website. It was a great experience for a young up-and-coming cricketer and his grandfather who has been Lachie’s coach for the past six years. The tips given to the pair were invaluable and the following Saturday Lachie, playing for Tewantin-Noosa Club in the Winter Premier League, took five wickets for 14 runs off eleven overs. Not to be outdone, Randall, after a few tips from Nathan Lyon took two for two with his off-breaks in a Seniors Match at Redland Bay on the same day.
