Joey Gabe winging it with entry in festival
Labor set to retain seats
By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A MOCKUMENTARY on professional chicken wing eaters taking competition to ridiculous lengths is one of 18 short films entered in the Odyssey Geelong Film Festival. Written, directed and edited by St Joseph’s College media student Gabe Rule with assistance from classmates, Wing It shines a satirical light on people’s competitive nature. Media teacher Sarah Goring said the short film was originally part of a year 11 project exploring reality TV and its use of opposing stereotypical characters. “It’s unique and it really fits the bill for the festival,” Ms Goring said. “Plus it’s awesome for the students to see what others around the region are doing.” Odyssey Geelong Film Festival offers an opportunity for young filmmakers to showcase their talents. Schools in Geelong and the Surf Coast can enter as many as two films by year 11 or 12 media studies students. Ten public and private schools from Surf Coast to Lara and across Geelong have entered films for 2014. The festival has support from City of Greater Geelong, Surf Coast Shire, Drysdale’s Potato Shed and Crash Course Productions. Festival screenings will begin: 6pm Wednesday at Surfworld Torquay; 5 December, Potato Shed; and 6 December, Village Cinemas, Geelong. Tickets are available at odysseyfilmfestival.com. By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN LOCAL seats should remain in the same hands after tomorrow’s state election, bookies tipped yesterday. The closest margin was in South Barwon, with betting agencies Sportingbet and Centrebet offering $1.65 for Liberal Andrew Katos retaining the seat against $2.10 for Labor’s Andy Richards. Sportsbet widened the odds in South Barwon to $1.45 for the coalition and $2.50 for Labor. Sportingbet and Centrebet offered $1.36 for Bellarine incumbent Lisa Neville holding her seat for Labor against coalition challenger Ron Nelson, at $2.90. Sportsbet was a little less generous, with Labor at $1.15 to the coalition’s $4.80. The seat of Geelong, which Labor stalwart Ian Trezise has handed to protege Christine Couzens, also appeared immune from a Liberal challenge, the agencies tipped. All three had Labor at $1.14 or $1.15 against $5 for Liberal Paula Kontelj. Only Sportsbet offered any odds in the Labor safe seat of Lara, with John Eren at $1.01 against $12 for Liberal Tony McManus. Bookies noted significant betting interest in the election but most of the money had backed Labor. If premier - and racing minister – Denis Napthine wanted to place a bet on the outcome of tomorrow’s state election he would get long odds on his party to win. Punters could get coalition odds of between $5.25 and $5.50, while Labor was a short-priced favourite of $1.15 on various markets. The odds represented an 85 per cent chance of a Labor win. WITH a state election imminent, unemployment rising and local business facing all manner of challenges, Geelong Chamber of Commerce had its eye on the ball this week. Or maybe that should be eye on the meatball because on Tuesday it emailed members its first "Recipe of the Day", promoting a fundraising range of gourmet accoutrements from welfare agency Karingal. "Over the next three weeks we will feature a selection of recipes from Seasons by Karingal that are sure to tempt your taste buds," the chamber announced. First up: Breakfast Eggs. "Serve with freshly toasted Turkish bread," the email helpfully concluded. Now that’s "serving" your membership. the signage of local election candidates. Some of the female hopefuls seem to have joined the Movember cause, while a couple of the blokes have sprouted unfortunate appendages in the most inappropriate of places. But it wasn't so many elections ago that the partner of a high-profile figure in Geelong was embarrasingly sprung defacing the, er, face of a candidate from the other side of politics. With the spread of CCTV, might history repeat? We can only hope. GEELONG ratepayers will soon receive City Hall’s annual calendar, with a special treat running almost the vertical length of pages two and three. Yes, it’s a picture of Darryn Lyons, resplendent in mayoral regalia and denim jeans beside a 2015 message to his minions. In fact, it’s the biggest image in the calendar, which was actu-
ally intended to highlight the photography of local snappers. Why couldn’t the mayor have been pictured with an accompanying month? He would have made a suitable Mr February. SPEAKING of the mayor, he certainly had a deserved triumph last Friday night with the lighting of his giant floating Christmas tree. The huge crowd was rapt when the beautiful new waterfront icon lit up in a kaleidascope of colours synchronised to carols played through loudspeakers. But notable were the faces missing from the crowd: prominent tree critics ranging from MPs to councillors and lesser lights with axes to grind. In the spirit of the season, they’re cordially invited to visit the waterfront under the cover of dark to sneak a peek. After all, what’s Christmas without turkeys.

PUB WITH NO PEER: Concept images of the new NDIA building, with the Carlton Hotel facade retained.
Authorised by D. Mantach, 104 Exhibition Street, Melbourne.
AN iconic Geelong pub will be absorbed into the facade of a $120 million building hoping to house Geelong's National Disability Insurance Agency office. The proposed nine-storey building will have almost 18,000 square metres of contemporary office space wrapping around Malop St's Carlton Hotel. The Independent revealed the plans online late last week. Techne Group plans to build
on the hotel's rear car park while including 277 car parking spaces. The Woods Bagot-designed building would include a cafe and other amenities. The Carlton Hotel will be partly retained, with most of its facade to continue having a presence on the corner of the site. The hotel building will be used for the cafe at ground level and office space above. The cafe will accommodate a maximum 229 patrons.

Legal help ‘drying up’ as aid access tightens By NOEL MURPHY TIGHTER access to free legal aid is denying Geelong people advice, clogging courts and curbing lawyers’ ability to answer rising numbers of calls for help, according to a provider. Barwon Community Legal Service said it was being bombarded with requests for assistance but was increasingly unable to help. Stricter state law-and-order policies were behind the pressure, driving a blowout in legal aid costs and subsequent tighter guidelines for help, said
legal service executive officer Nick Hudson. “Over the last 12 months there has certainly been a direct result with people not accessing legal aid,” Mr Hudson told the Independent. “We’ve seen a significant increase in inquiries across the whole spectrum of legal matters. “We don’t do all the things Legal Aid does but we try to help people, refer them to people who do, but there are a lot fewer options now. “People can still get Legal Aid
grants for criminal stuff but local family law money has almost completely dried up. “Legal Aid still does some family work but most private lawyers in Geelong are not taking on family law work. Private lawyer grants used to be (available) for a lot of people.” Mr Hudson said the legal aid cash crisis had burdened many people with considerable stress. People were going to court unrepresented, magistrates were spending inordinate time explaining processes to litigants in conflict situations and

some cases were ending up chaotic, he said. Private lawyers told the Independent Legal Aid assistance had become virtually impossible to obtain, with numerous clients forced to attend court without appropriate representation. The Independent was unable to obtain comment from Legal Aid’s Geelong or Melbourne offices. Geelong Law Association had not replied to a call for comment before the Independent went to press.
VIOLENT incidents at Geelong’s public hospital have increased 36 per cent in the past year, according to new statistics. The hospital data shows an increase in “code grey” unarmed violence from 622 to 848 over the past two financial years but no reported armed incidents in either year.
Monsignor farewelled HUNDREDS of mourners have farewelled Geelong’s Monsignor James Murray at his funeral in St Mary’s Basilica. Mons Murray, who was St Mary’s parish priest for over 30 years, died last week aged 90.

Wi-fi spreads FREE wi-fi has continued creeping across Geelong’s municipal area, with Leopold’s Memorial Recreation Reserve the latest beneficiary. City Hall officially launched the reserve’s wi-fi service on Wednesday as part of its plan to expand internet access across the municipality.

We’re making a lights list and publishing it twice IT’S BECOME a long-running tradition for many and a reminder of the approaching festive season for the rest. Households all over Geelong are dusting off their Christmas decorations and transforming standard suburbia into magnificent celebrations. Gordon and Marie Scanlon have
been lighting up their Grovedale home for 14 years. “We’ve got all the lights up and we’re just putting up the decorations in the front garden,” Marie said. “We went out and bought $120 worth of lollies - we like to give out lots of lollies to the kids.” Marie hoped a list of participating homes could be published so sightse-
ers could drive from house to house to view them. “It was a bit disappointing last year because there was no list and that meant on some nights we only got three people coming past. “Many people like a list and they rely on it to see the Christmas lights.” The Independent invites homeowners with Christmas decorations
to submit their details by posting on facebook.com.GeelongIndependent, emailing editorial@geelongindependent.com.au or writing to PO Box 407, Geelong, 3220. Submitted photos of light displays will also be considered for publication. And for the record, the Scanlons would love to see carloads of onlookers outside17 Laguna Plc, Grovedale.

VICTORIAN ELECTION 2014
Leaders in last pitch for votes
PLAN: Labor's Dan Andrews speaks out in Geelong.
SUPPORTER: Premier Denis Napthine backs Geelong.
I’M NOT interested in tired, old negatives. That’s why Labor has a positive plan for the future of Geelong. My priorities are clear: we need to fund hospitals and schools and get this city back to work. I don’t believe in sitting on the sidelines. I believe governments have a powerful role, working with business to create jobs together. The Back To Work Act will be the first law introduced under a Labor Government - a real plan to help create 100,000 jobs. But the best jobs start with the best skills. That’s why Labor will save Victoria’s TAFE system and bring our campuses back from the brink, with a $320 million TAFE Rescue Fund. We’ll also reopen tech schools across the state so secondary school kids can get the skills they need. Our plan to make Victoria the Education State starts in Geelong, with $28.1 million to finish the stalled upgrade of Geelong High School, replace 17 old portables at Drysdale primary, rebuild the dilapidated Portarlington primary and upgrade Northern Bay College. Locals are also worried about the ambulance crisis. Across Victoria, too many people are taken too soon because the ambulance took too long - that’s why I will end the war on our hard-working paramedics and get the system working again. I’m optimistic. Geelong has a proud past and if we make the right decisions it will have a great future. We’ll fund our schools, hospitals and TAFEs. We’ll create jobs and support our industries. Because we’ll put people first.
ONLY THE Napthine Coalition can be trusted to deliver for the Geelong community. My government has built a strong economy, enabling us to provide better health care, schools, public transport, roads and community safety. Locally, 60 extra police have been deployed, we built the $15.6 million Waurn Ponds police station and SES complex, and PSOs are patrolling Geelong Railway Station. We’ve invested significantly in local health and education and are working hard to provide job opportunities and grow Geelong’s economy. We secured the NDIA national headquarters for Geelong, creating over 300 jobs, and will relocate the Victorian WorkCover Authority to Geelong, creating 550 more. The ABS relocation to Geelong and new Energy Australia call centre create an additional 550 jobs. Only we will build East West Link to provide the vital second river crossing as well as investing in local roads. We’ve also improved public transport and have acted to ease the cost of living. We’ve halved ambulance subscriptions, increased stamp duty concessions and reduced utility costs, including $50 reductions on water bills. We will support families with an annual $100 rebate on kinder fees. We will invest $35 million on upgrading Geelong Performing Arts Centre and $5 million on a new Geelong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Our Geelong team - Andrew Katos, Paula Kontelj, Tony McManus and Ron Nelson - will work hard to make this great region even better. Geelong has always been a special place for me and I am committed to seeing this wonderful region prosper and grow. Denis Napthine MP Premier of Victoria

Coalition promises ‘trump Labor’

KACINSKAS, G
THE COALITION has significantly outspent Labor in election promises to local voters. With its four seats, three affected by boundary redistributions, the region is considered a key battleground in tomorrow’s election. The coalition has been widely reported as pledging around half a billion dollars, while Labor’s IOU is closer to $120 million. Amid the flood of announcements from both major parties, it's difficult to separate funding
for new projects from ongoing commitments for which the government of the day is financially responsible anyway. The Independent has reported the big-ticket items including Labor’s $70 million for Skilled Stadium and $30 million for Geelong Performing Arts Centre. The coalition hit back with a $35 million pledge for the $140 million GPAC redevelopment. Other coalition pledges have included: ManuFuture Geelong Initiative, $10 million; Geelong-based injury and dis-

ability insurance centre, $7 million; Geelong convention centre site study, $5 million; Bellarine Secondary College, Jan Juc Surf Life Saving Club, a kindergarten and tourism promotions, $5 million; South Geelong Railway Station car park; $1.1 million. Labor's other pledges included: Portarlington safe harbour, $15 million; St Ignatius College Drysdale hall, $2 million; Leopold Hub, $3 million.

‘Sequel, TV’ in local film plan By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN PRODUCERS of a local feature film yet to begin production are planning a sequel and television series spin off. The Chickabees is also $100,000 short of its $1.2 million budget, with private investors so far tipping in $400,000. Former federal MP for Corio Gavan O’Connor and Screen Actors Studio founder John McGlynn are co-producing the film, based on the books of Geelong children’s author Margaret Clark. “The screenplay is done, casting is complete and we're ready to go,” Mr O’Connor told an investment forum this week.
The producers had committed $350,000 of their own funds to the project, he said. A “critical” domestic distribution deal and cinema release had been secured for the film’s release in cinemas around Australia in June. Mr McGlynn said the movie was the first in a slate of planned films and television productions, including a Chickabees sequel and series and a children’s series called Train Town, set in Queenscliff. Another project, The Last Bunyip, described as a cross between Crocodile Dundee and Free Willy, was also in development, he said. The Chickabees will be shot
entirely on locations around Geelong, including Adventure Park and Kardinia International College. The film is about a young allgirl dance and vocal group trying to gain fame by winning a performance competition but learning some lessons about friendship along the way. With production scheduled for early next year, The Chickabees will star Strictly Ballroom's Paul Mercurio. The director will be Kevin Dobson who has directed television productions for the Disney Channel as well as movies The Secret of Bear Mountain, The Virgin of Juarez and Savages Crossing.

Mum in murder mystery dies By NOEL MURPHY A MOTHER accused twice of killing her daughter in the unsolved 1979 Geelong West stabbing murder of 18-year-old Dorna Tramonte has died at 95. Maria Tramonte was acquitted in October 1980 during a high-
profile Melbourne court case of murdering her daughter in West Park opposite their Pineville St home. An earlier trial in April 1980 was not completed and Mrs Tramonte maintained she had nothing to do with her daughter’s death.
The court heard Miss Tramonte had attended a birthday barbecue at a friend’s house and early in the evening phoned her mother for permission to catch a later bus home. Her mother gave permission after some argument. Her bus arrived near her home about 9.15pm and she was
stabbed three times while walking through the park toward her home. Crown prosecutor Ian Heath told the court Dorna had arranged to meet her mother at the bus stop. The court heard bloodstains of Dorna’s blood type were found
on Mrs Tramonte’s coat and a bloodstained paper plate and foil on which Dorna had been carrying a birthday cake found at a nearby house. Mrs Tramonte said she went to the house to wait for a bus. Dorna ran into her home and sister Anna, drove her to hospital.
She died seconds after arrival. Mrs Tramonte made no admissions or confessions and sobbed in the witness box: “I love my daughter. I did everything for her all my life.” Mrs Tramonte passed away peacefully on Monday.
Icon Christmas tree lights up crowd - and business Police seek help By NOEL MURPHY over deadly cow
THE LIGHTING of Geelong's controversial floating Christmas tree has been greeted with rapturous applause. Mayor Darryn Lyons arrived on a brightly-lit tugboat with Santa Claus and a Dixieland jazz band before pressing the flesh with the 15,000-strong crowd, highfiving youngsters and posing for photos and selfies. He lit the 27-metre steel and aluminium tree after a countdown from his podium beside the waterfront carousel. The tree drew a widespread excited response with media coverage across the country and overseas. Nearby traders have reported enhanced businesses since last Friday's lighting. "Honestly, I’d gauge the numbers at up to 30,000 and I’ve seen some big events on the waterfront," said Panache restaurant’s Mark Oates. "It was like New Year’s eve, it was awesome. People were walking around with their chests puffed out saying, 'How good are we?’. "The waterfront looks great and the mayor, love him or hate him, is doing his job incredibly well. Pat him on the back, the place looked like Monte Carlo. "He’s doing exactly what a mayor should do, drum up business and stay out of politics. I don’t know who else could drum up the sort of media exposure he’s brought Geerlong - and on the world stage, too."
POLICE have appealed for witnesses to the death of a man after a cow ran him down on Vines Rd, Hamlyn Heights, on 9 November. The cow had escaped a saleyard in Weddell Rd before causing several traffic incidents along nearby streets. The 72-year-old Highton man attempted to catch the beast before it knocked him to the ground and he lost consciousness. He was transported to hospital but died on 19 November as a result of his injuries. Two passengers on a bus forced to brake suddenly to avoid the cow were treated for minor injuries. A Victoria Police spokesperson said investigators would like to speak to a female nurse who assisted the man at the scene and a young girl who also tried to help catch the cow at the time of the incident. The spokesperson said anyone with any information could phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

A 71-YEAR-OLD East Geelong man will appear in Melbourne Magistrates Court on 12 December over historic sexual assault charges. Police have charged the former Catholic priest with 15 counts of indecent assault and one of buggery. The Independent understands the man was previously a member of City of Greater Geelong's disability access committee. He was also the secretary of the Geelong branch of an organisation for blind citizens, although the roles are not believed to be related to the charges.

Workers in fear of fast drivers ‘Trend’ of speeding through work sites
SPEEDING drivers are endangering the lives of workers on road projects around Geelong, according to a local industry veteran. Bill Alford, a Winchelsea father of five, said drivers “taking work sites for granted had become a trend in the region. “In my role as a supervisor on work sites I am noticing drivers are just going too fast through our work sites. It’s a real worry, Mr Alford said. “We’re working on the roads to improve them for all of us but we want to feel safe and get home at the end of the day. Mr Alford, who has worked on roads for 35 years, said his colleagues had
to put their “trust in drivers travelling through an “unpredictable environment. “We can do as much traffic management and put safety measures in place but if the individual driver does not take care it puts us at risk. Numerous road projects are underway around the region, including sites with high volumes of traffic, such as the Great Ocean Road and the Surf Coast Hwy at Grovedale. Workers often post speed limits of 40km/h as they work amid passing traffic. VicRoads plans further works on other busy stretches including the Princes Fwy and Geelong-Portarlington Rd. VicRoads south west regional direc-
tor William Tieppo said 37 workers had been injured on Victorian road works sites since 2012. Safety was a “serious issue for road workers, Mr Tieppo said. He urged drivers to take particular care over summer as projects proceeded in ideal conditions. Drivers should also consider their own safety when driving through work sites. “There are times when we can’t complete a job in a single day and speeds will stay reduced, even if there are no workers on site. This is to keep you and your family safe as the road conditions have changed, Mr Tieppo said.

Local homes ‘beyond reach of too many’
Affordability worsens GEELONG’S housing affordability crisis is worsening, according to new research. Master Builders Association of Victoria found that Geelong housing had declined from unaffordable in 2004 to highly unaffordable. The affordability crisis deepened despite the release of extra land in the region, with further allotment supplies flagged for Lara, Lovely Banks and Batesford south. The Independent reported this year that increased land supplies in Armstrong Creek was aimed at driving greater competition and lower prices for home-buyers, according to State Government. The Barwon region has the fifth
most expensive land in Australia, according to Housing Industry Association (HIA) and RP Data figures. The ranking followed revelations in the Independent that an international land affordability survey rated Geelong property less affordable than New York. The 10th annual Demographia International Housing Affordability Survey ranked Geelong at 7.3, placing Geelong among the world’s leastaffordable housing markets because of “restrictive land use policies”. Master Builders chief Radley de Silva said the latest affordability research was “alarming” because it put the cost of buying a house beyond the reach of “too many”.
The research showed the median house price in Geelong had risen 56 per cent from $245,000 to $382,500 since 2004, while household incomes increased 44 per cent to $54,260. “The cost of buying a home in Geelong is beyond reach for too many, even though local households are bringing in nearly $17,000 more a year now than they did a decade ago,” Mr de Silva said. “Housing affordability is the forgotten issue of this election campaign but it needs to be tackled.” Mr de Silva said five key factors contributed to the inflated cost of home ownership: stamp duty and property taxes; building red tape; council delays; limited support for
first-home buyers; and a shortage of registered tradespeople. “We want to see political candidates in Geelong agree with our call for an independent inquiry into housing affordability. “Cost of living pressures are a huge issue for local residents and there’s no larger single cost for most people than buying a home. “Residents in Geelong deserve to see some action on housing affordability.” Mr de Silva said the organisation launched a state election campaign website at buildingourfuture.com.au to highlight the issue of housing affordability.
The Don is good for exhibition celebrating By NOEL MURPHY GRAND names of cricket have resounded across Geelong: Cooper, Wills, Hassett, Sheahan and Redpath to name a few. Now the most famous of all is about to join them: Bradman. The Don, the game’s greatest batsman, is subject of a special cricket exhibition to be showcased at Geelong’s National Wool Museum. Geelong cricket historian Kevin O’Dowd described The Art of Bradman as “fabulous”. Bradman wrote the forword to Mr O’Dowd’s book, Geelong’s Blazing Century. “I had a caricature of him by artist Mike Mitton that I was going to use but Bradman said not to because his ears were too pronounced,” Mr O’Dowd recalled.
“He sent me a photo he preferred and said. ‘Get your friend to draw that’.” Mr O’Dowd has lent items to the exhibition, including a copy of his 1949 Wisden almanac, documenting the near-mythical Invincibles exploits of the previous year and carrying The Don’s autograph across several pages. Some of Mr O’Dowd’s other local treasures in the exhibition include Lindsay Hassett’s well-used childhood bat, a 1930 Geelong Cricket Association blazer and a small bat signed by Bradman to mark the 1996 centenary of Geelong cricket. A range of cricket items from numerous other contributors, including Mayor Darryn Lyons, also feature in The Art of Bradman. The exhibition runs from Monday to 15 February.

Saltworks site set for safety works By NOEL MURPHY CHEETHAM’S dilapidated, asbestos-riddled saltworks site at Moolap would be fixed under a new State Government, according to Bellarine MP Lisa Neville. The heritage-listed and environmentally-sensitive site has fallen into disrepair over the past 20 years under the ownership of Ridley Corporation and on the watch of successive governments. Ridley now wants to redevelop the area as a $4 billion waterside suburb but the old saltworks administration precinct remains a dangerous mix of broken building materials and derelict sheds covered in graffiti.

the Otways, VicForests by its very nature will try to overturn this legislation. They cannot be trusted.” Mr Birrell said residents and conservationists staged more than 40 blockades during the bitter seven-year battle against VicForests and its logging practices, in particular clearfelling of "biodiverse" native forests. “VicForests is a commercial entity that will seek to maximise profit through extractive exploitation of Otway native forest. VicForests has no role to play in the Otways and their presence will only guarantee to stir up old battles.” But Agriculture Minister Peter Walsh’s office dismissed OREN as “dead wrong”.
“There's no commercial logging in the Otways,” spokeperson Deborah Cole told the Independent. “This involves four people previously in the Department of Environment and Primary Industries whose job was to manage the licences for about 70 small operators in the west of the state. “Those four people now work for VicForests. They do the same thing, manage the same licences and there's no change to harvest levels. “Anybody suggesting changes to harvest levels because of this administrative transfer is incorrect. The environmentalists are making lots of mischief over this and they’re just dead wrong.”

BITTER environmental fights would flare in the Otway Ranges again after logging operations came under the control of VicForests, activists warned this week. Otway Ranges Environment Network (OREN) warned the decade-old Otways forest war, which raged from 1996 through 2002, would resume after State Government handed logging control from Department of Environment and Primary Industries. “Letting VicForests back in is like letting the fox take charge of the henhouse,” OREN spokesman Simon Birrell said. “Although currently clearfell logging and woodchipping in still legally banned on public land in

Ms Neville blamed the existing government for the area’s woes. “Ridley Corporation has its hands tied and the Liberal government aren’t doing a thing to help them,” she said. “Labor will do what it takes so Ridley can get to work and make this site safe.” “Locals shouldn’t have to live in the shadow of danger for a moment longer.” Ms Neville said Labor would work with Heritage Victoria, the EPA and Ridley to get the appropriate approvals in place, allowing the company to step in and make the site safer.

CAV warning to households:
‘Cons coming’ TRAVELLING conmen from New South Wales are targeting the Barwon region, according to Consumer Affairs Victoria (CAV). CAV director Dr Claire Noone said intelligence reports indicated several suspects planned to meet in the region. “We’re concerned they may take the opportunity to doorknock and rip off Victorians on their way,” Dr Noone said. “I urge all Victorians, especially people living in the Barwon region and along routes to the area, to be wary of uninvited offers to do work at rates that seem cheap or are available ‘today only’ or for ‘cash only’. “Travelling conmen usually demand cash up front for jobs
such as asphalting, roofing work, painting and gardening, then disappear, leaving poor quality or incomplete work. “They prey on unsuspecting and trusting people, often ripping off older Victorians, people with a disability, residents who speak little or no English and full-time mums or carers. “If you know someone who may be at risk, please help them to be aware and ready to say no to uninvited and high-pressure offers.” Dr Noone said summer was peak season for travelling conmen but this year they were already out in force. “They’re organised, changing their practices to avoid detection and in some cases appear to ’ be
using letter-drop companies to deliver professional-looking flyers. “The flyers may even carry the logos of industry organisations to create the illusion of legitimacy.” Dr Noone said strategies to avoid falling victim included: resisting easy or cheap deals; obtaining written quotes from established tradespeople and checking with previous clients as referenc’ es; asking for tradespeople’s full names and registration or licence details; and checking any named business’s contact details or calling to confirm the tradesperson’s employment. Dr Noon urged residents to report suspicious activity on 1300 133 408.

Researchers’ ‘mega-shocks’
Disease threat
A HUMAN disease pandemic is a biosecurity threat for Australia, Geelong researchers have found. The warning was contained in Australian Animal Health Laboratory’s (AAHL) contribution to a new report outlining 12 potential biosecurity “mega-shocks” for the country. AAHL director Professor Kurt Zuelke warned Australia against becoming complacent amid increasing biosecurity challenges. He called for a “coordinated approach involving government, industry, scientists and the general public” to manage biosecurity threats.
AAHL science director Dr Gary Fitt said pre-emptive action to avoid biosecurity issues was better than dealing with the consequences. “Dominating the news right now is the Ebola virus crisis, which is an obvious global health concern,” he said. “Meanwhile, farmers near Katherine, in the Northern Territory, are dealing with an outbreak of a new disease - cucumber green mottle mosaic virus - and, while not fatal to people like Ebola, this virus is devastating their crops, which has severe financial impacts.” Dr Fitt said the report, Australia’s Biosecurity Future, identi-
fied issues in protecting Australia over the next 20 to 30 years, including its economy. “If there was a significant decline in European honey bee populations across Australia in the future, for example, this would impact our economy with losses of around $4 billion to $6 billion,” he said. The report also identified “global megatrends” of change and complexity in dealing with biosecurity challenges. Dr Fitt said the mega-trends included the need to produce more food for growing populations while managing pressure on natural resources.

Man, US visitors saved from bay By NOEL MURPHY HIGH winds sent three people overboard when their 17-foot boat flipped on Corio Bay last weekend. Geelong Coast Guard commander Peter Burrow said strengthening wind caught out the trio unexpectedly late Sun-
day afternoon. “The owner was a Geelong resident with two people onboard - visitors from the United States - and they were out for a pleasant afternoon sail when the southerly got up and all hell broke out,” Cmdr Burrow said. “She just rolled over when a
gust caught them unexpectedly. No one was harmed, although a lady on board was wrapped in blankets with a bit of hypothermia. “Once we got her back we gave her a couple of cups of coffee. I said. ‘That’s a good experience to tell the folks back home in the states’.”

Global Hamlet coup for GPAC A CULTURAL coup will deliver to Geelong the only Australian performance of a two-year world tour celebrating the 450th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s birth. London-based Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre will stage three performances of its travelling Hamlet production at Costa Hall in May, promising the city an arts tourism windfall. Geelong Performing Arts Centre (GPAC) secured the show as a highlight of the centre’s 2015 season. General manager Jill Smith said the internationally renowned production “highlighted GPAC’s position as a leading regional venue attracting major companies from Australia and overseas”. “The Globe season will bring significant benefits for the Geelong region (because) we expect a large number of visitors for the event,” she said. Globe’s unprecedented theatrical adventure is touring Hamlet to every country in the world, playing everywhere from village squares to national theatres, beaches and palaces. Victorian Arts Minister Heidi Victoria said the State Government was pleased to support GPAC in staging the ambitious Globe project. “That Geelong is on the itinerary of The Globe Theatre’s epic tour to bring Hamlet to 200 countries across seven continents is testament to the drive and commitment of the local community,” Ms Victoria said.
GLOBAL: The two faces of the Globe company's Hamlet, Ladi Emeruwa and Naeem Hayat. “It is a great example of how public and private investment can work together to bring such an inspiring international production to Geelong. Mayor Darryn Lyons was “thrilled” about the show’s tourism potential. “Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre is a massive tourist attraction in London and the production company is widely known as one of the greatest interpreters of Shakespeare of all time,” he said. Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre is regarded as one of the great interpreters of Shakespeare. A GPAC spokesperson said the company’s production of Hamlet was “a fresh, fast-paced version of this classic tragedy”.
Watch Rae’s story at vimeo.com/facfamily Connect with us: /FTLCfamily
“Played on a bare wooden stage, the cast of 12 actors will perform over two dozen roles emphasising the play’s humour and with a focus on language and storytelling. “The Globe introduces Shakespeare to those who might never get to the Globe, those who might never in fact have seen one of his plays and wins over those who are not necessarily great fans of the bard. “The production moves like the wind, fully capturing the inevitability of the indecisive Prince Hamlet’s dreadfully delayed revenge.” Tickets will go on sale Wednesday after GPAC’s 2015 Deakin University Theatre Season launch.

WHERE does time go? Has someone fast-forwarded the days? It’s nearly December, the festive season rush is looming again and I’ve got foodie Christmas day ideas on my mind. Whether your spread will be big, small, at lunchtime or dinner, I found some great value meat, vegetables and cakes at my local supermarket. Keep in mind that the specials I found might not be available when you shop but, with a keen eye, you’re sure to find some equally good bargains of your own. Turkey is a yummy traditional choice if you’re not a huge lover of red meat. And I’ve heard through the grapevine that cooking it upside down makes the breast meat extra juicy. On my shopping mission to Coles Geelong I found a 4.4kg turkey for just $28 – great value. It was frozen, mind you, so I quickly popped it in a basket so my fingers could thaw. Chicken is another easy option that goes down well with most of us. And I found an RSPCA-approved whole extra-large chicken for just $4.68. Marinade it overnight, pop it on the barbeque or roast it and fill with a lovely stuffing of your choice. Try making your stuffing with ‘craisins’ – dried Ocean Spray cranberries. They’re simply scrumptious little bursts of fruit in every mouthful. But try not eating them all while you you’re cooking though – ha, ha. I couldn’t resist popping in my basket a piece of gourmet meat – almost 2kg of rib eye roast with bone still in for just $20 a kilogram. Rib eye is by no means a cheap cut, so this was a great way to save some money. Once cooked, just slice it off the bone in one go if you like and, voila, you have Scotch fillet. Then I found Desiree potatoes – the pink ones – for only $3.98 a kilo. You can make a lot of mash at that price. Try mashing them boiled with a third as much

Council this week released an image of one of the nightly projections set to light up the building 8.30pm to midnight during the festive season. “If you loved the festive atmosphere of Friday night’s tree lighting then bring the family to City Hall this Saturday night,” Mayor Darryn Lyons said. “I can’t wait for people to see what we’ve got in store.”

Write to us:
Letters WE’RE a funny lot, we Victorians. Four years ago enough of us, incensed by Labor’s out-of-control spending, voted in a coalition government to fix things. The Liberal/Nationals, despite the antics of the opposition, did what they do well and pulled us into the black, barely If the polls are anything to go by we’ve had enough of belt-tightening and want to believe Daniel Andrews’ offers of an easier life. I find it hard to believe we can be so shallow, so selfish, that we put ourselves and Victoria’s finances back into danger before we’ve achieved a healthy bank balance. If that’s the case, we will certainly get the government we deserve. Elizabeth Cross St Albans Park
Talk about achievements ‘TALK is cheap’ is an old saying. I am reminded of it daily as both the written and visual media blitz us with statements from both sides of politics about the hundreds of thousands, even millions, of dollars that will be spent following this upcoming election. I, however, prefer the adage ‘Words speak louder than words’, and reflect on what has happened both locally and state-wide over the past two state government terms. The earlier one left us with an uncomfortable balance sheet for the state, a bigger-than-necessary desalination plant draining us of thousands of dollars weekly, a Myki ticketing system that didn’t work despite costing millions, and unacceptable union interference in projects. The latter has worked, despite a hung parliament, to get Victoria’s finances on a sound footing, sort out the Myki system, locally provide a new school in Torquay, finance a large number of sports clubs to enhance their community activities, and found a way to provide public health services in both Waurn Ponds and Geelong’s northern suburbs. Surely this is a more community minded approach - to service both areas. Whoever wins the election, I hope they emulate the latter government. Dorothy Lea Marshall

CFMEU good for industry and workers
Stretch Kontelj
UNLESS Dr Stretch Kontelj has worked in the building industry, which I doubt, he wouldn’t have a clue of the good for which the CFMEU stands. If he can’t say something good about anybody he shouldn’t say anything. I would sooner have the CFMEU running the building industry than Daniel Grollo. The building workers have su-
tion outcome People are living longer, which we should applaud. Discriminatory attitudes are all too prevalent in the community, particularly in the workforce. There are 200,000 over-50s on Centrelink Newstart benefits, at a great cost to society. Older workers bring skills, knowledge, experience and reliability. Deloitte Access Economics recently stated that increasing employment participation rates by over three per cent would see an extra $33 billion boost to the economy annually. This is staggering. Older Victorians want opportunities to participate, to be active and continue to contribute to the community. Many thousands of dollars in payroll tax will be lost when the automobile industry sector finally closes and older workers’ skills will once again be forfeited. Taking money out of TAFE and retraining is not helpful. We need to make sure we have an age-friendly Victoria. Bruce Holmes Portarlington
Heat's on Napthine THE NAPTHINE Government clearly rates the environment a very low priority for the state election if its performance is anything to go by. An action statement for preservation of our endangered Leadbeater’s possum, our state faunal emblem, was recently rewritten by an appointed committee including timber industry support groups but excluding two leading ecologists who studied these

animals for decades. Similarly, our state alpine management plan is being rewritten by a committee top heavy in cattlemen. The state emissions reduction target was dumped two years ago, solar feed-in tariffs were slashed and the Victorian energy efficiency target is unlikely to survive. Recently the Premier actually defended the Federal Government’s decision to slash the renewable energy target, despite the fact it cost 100 jobs in his own electorate at Portland. It is clear the Napthine Government does not regard the environment as the global common that is meant to benefit all of us. Apparently the only people who matter are those with exploitative connections to our natural resources. With 2014 expected to be globally the hottest year on record, how can governments not serve us by holding environmental protection as a major priority? Ray Black Belmont
Down down with status quo WHEN politicians are proud of what they have achieved in office and enthusiastic about their policies, they are more than happy to debate their opponents. Both state major party leaders’ brushing off of the ABC's offer for a debate was one more indication they hope to win by pulling more and bigger gifts from their lolly bags while avoiding scrutiny and probing. These parties have become the Coles and Woolworths of politics, each assuming that if the other doesn't do better then they don't have to either.
But their assumption that voters will do what they have been doing in the recent past - holding their noses and picking the party likely to do the least damage - doesn't have to come true. More people are looking to other candidates for a sense of hope and integrity and ability. In my opinion, Lisa Ashdowne, Greens candidate for South Barwon, deserves consideration. I am impressed with the genuine commitment she brings to the challenges facing Victoria and with her devotion to serving her community. I hope others as disheartened by the status quo as I am will look beyond the major parties to candidates with the ability and dedication to serve the best interests of Victoria and its people. John Cameron Torquay
Just opinion, in fact ALAN Barron (Letters, 21 November) is not a climate scientist yet claimed that the majority of climate scientists were wrong. The actual percentage figure is unimportant. The fact is that he chose to accept the views of a clear minority of climate scientists. He claimed that the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere was too small to cause climate change. Clearly he is unaware that, as a greenhouse gas, any change in its concentration in the atmosphere will alter the amount of heat trapped by the atmosphere. He also seemed unaware that climate change involves more than just temperature rise. He made no attempt to explain record temperatures, high and low, around the world, the melting of icecaps and glaciers, the unusually severe floods, snow and droughts and the increasing acidity of oceans due to more dissolved CO2. Mr Barron is not an economist, either, or he would not have made the ludicrous claim that economic problems in Spain and other European countries were due to the use of renewable energy. He also ignored the fact that the renewable energy industry contributes to economic prosperity by providing people with jobs. Mr Barron, like me, is just a person with an opinion. It is important that readers do not just accept what he says as fact but that they investigate the issue further and make up their own minds based on credible evidence. Daryl Backwell Breamlea
Taking care of business
Shaping the future of regional Victoria Leading up to the state election, the Victorian Employers’ Chamber of Commerce & Industry (VECCI) is urging the major parties to commit to four priorities that are crucial for regional Victoria — jobs, infrastructure, skills and international engagement. INFRASTRUCTURE: Funding infrastructure is critical and the focus needs to be on transport and tourism. The state government must invest in vital road and rail links and start local major infrastructure projects throughout regional Victoria. VECCI is working to accelerate economic growth and secure future prosperity across Victoria. We are making a difference and so can you.

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN FROM Funkytown to G-town, Pseudo Echo will bring its pioneering ‘80s electro-pop to Geelong this weekend. Ever since Brian Canham and his fellow new romantics burst onto the scene in the early ‘80s, the distinctive electro sound and beat has become the stuff of Aussie music legend. Not only did the first two Pseudo Echo albums top the charts, a remake of the Lipps song Funkytown brought the group international success. “I can certainly hear the influence from the ‘80s coming out in new bands over last decade or so,” Canham told the Independent. “You can hear different parts of the ‘80s get a run now and again, perhaps with a contemporary take and with slightly darker sound, a little edgier.” Those ‘80s influences were also revisited by Pseudo Echo earlier this year with the release of its first album in 15 years, Ultraviolet. “As we were developing the record I had to think about what we sound like these days,” Canham laughed. He found the answer by delving back into the band’s history to rediscover its heritage for re-

The band plans to record a live album while playing the famous Viper Room on Sunset Strip in Los Angles in February. “I’ve wanted to tour outside Australia again, so this trip will be a bit of fun and nostalgia as well as doing some serious recording,” Canham said. He was excited about reuninting with the band’s core of fans remaining in Geelong. “Geelong fans don’t usually trek to Melbourne to see us, so it’s kind of nice when we do it. Playing Geelong is like playing a little capital city.” Pseudo Echo plays Corio’s Gateway Hotel tomorrow night.

Bluestone lines up NYE By NOEL MURPHY
BLUES: Geoff Achison.
TWELVE-BARS, boogies , acoustic and hard-grinding electric rock are about to descend en masse on Geelong’s Sleepy Hollow Blues Club fans. The club, which runs monthly Sunday sessions at Geelong Trades Hall, is gearing up for its marquis event, the annual Bluestone festival on New Year’s Eve. Headlining the show will be one of Australia’s elite blues acts, Geoff Achison and the Souldiggers. Australian Guitar magazine nominated Achison as one of the country’s top-50
PLAYING: Greg Dodd and the Hoodoo Men. Picture: Sam Tilders guitar virtuosos in 2012. His scorching style is reminiscent of Eric Clapton, Gary Moore and Stevie Ray Vaughan.
Four other Geelong and Melbournebased blues acts will complete the lineup: Brian Fraser, Stringybark McDowell and Rusty, Greg Dodd and the Hoodoo Men, and Rod Paine and the Full Time Lovers. On New Year’s Day four more acts will perform on the Bluestone stage, featuring some of the cream of the country’s female blues artists. At the top of the bill will be Chubby Rae and the Elevators ahead of JJ and the Blue Dogs, Blue Eyes Cry and Sweet Felicia and the Honeytones. Now in its 19th year, the two-day event has consistently showcased the best Gee-
long blues talent, acts from Melbourne and interstate and the occasional international line-up as well, says Sleepy Hollow Blues Club president Rocky Vignale. “Bluestone 2014/15 has a fantastic selection of great blues talent. We’re expecting upwards of 500 people and it’s always a safe and great event,” he said. The music kicks off at 6pm on 31 December at Murgheboluc Oval. Gates open 10am. New year’s day music plays from 11am to 6pm. Free overnight camping is available to ticket-holders.

“We’re privilege to sell the HD dream and the personal bespoke feel of the HD range together with sensational merchandise,” David says. “Women are increasingly well represented in the HD community across the whole range of bikes, not just the Sportsters of the past”. GHD has been selling above-average numbers of bikes per week since opening its superstore making GHD one of Victoria’s leaders for the HD brand. “The big mover presently is the new Breakout FXSB model, which is a cross between the modern and traditional HD,” Andrea says.

GEELONG Harley Davidson (GHD) is thriving in its new store at the gateway to Australia’s greatest motorcycling ride - the Great Ocean Road. Now situated alongside the Princess Hwy on Latrobe Blvd, GHD is a sponsor of the Geelong Revival. GHD’s pits display at the event will feature the attendance of Corey Buttigieg and his GHD VRod the fastest in the world. GHD was founded in 1997 by the late Greg Curry and Reg Wilson, of Australian Motorcycle Engineering. Greg’s wife, Andrea Davis-Curry, had been managing the merchandising of Harley Davidson clothing and spare parts but after his death in 2008 she became the sole owner of GHD and Australia’s only Harley Davidson female dealer principal. A keen motorcyclist, Andrea rides a 2008 XL 1200 Nightster and a 2013 Harley trike. She also owns a collection of vintage Harleys. Motorcycle industry veteran and Geelong motorcycling stalwart David O’Brien is the general manager for GHD, responsible for driving the business strategy. Andrea says GHD moved to its new building 11 months ago to offer the best possible showroom and workshop facilities in Australia. “With totally new infrastructure and dedicated built facilities focussed on the HD brand, we’re ensuring the success of the business in the Geelong region well into the future,” she says. “GHD is a brand leader and the business prides itself on having the best dedicated, friendly knowledgeable well trained HD staff.” GHD provides a standard of customer relationship management unavailable in the big smoke and chain stores! “We pride ourselves on making GHD a fun place to work and do business,” Andrea says. “The business is constantly being measured on how customers interact with us.” “One of our values is to treat every customer as if

Savings with solar IMAGINE running a household air-conditioner this summer without worrying about the next electricity bill. A City to Surf Solar+ solar power system can make it possible. “Why not let the Sun work for you and cover the cost of running your AC,” says City to Surf Solar+ director Christian Pritchett. “Solar power also helps offset the costs of running pool pumps, cleaners and filters.” Locally owned and operated, City to Surf Solar+’s high-quality products are installed by its experienced, fully qualified, Clean Energy Council-accredited installation team.
As well as grid-connect systems, City to Surf Solar+ is also accredited for off-grid and battery back-up systems. City to Surf Solar+ now has a working battery back-up system available to view for households interesting in saving excess power. City to Surf Solar+ has been Geelong’s trusted professional in solar power for seven years. “A solar power system is a large outlay and you can rely on us with that long term investment,” Mr Pritchett says. “Don’t wait too long to install solar power because Powercor has introduced limitations
on the amount of solar power able to be installed and people might miss out if too many of their neighbours already have it installed. “Also, there’s still a lot of uncertainty around the federal rebate.” City to Surf Solar+ takes care of all paperwork to make the process as simple as possible. Prospective clients can inspect live systems in action at the business’s showroom at 3/34 Essington St, Grovedale, by arranging an appointment on 1300 348 847. More information is available at citytosurfsolar.com.au.

OLD-FASHIONED customer service and care has kept Ozwide Locksmiths going as a family business for so long. Under its former name of Arcade Locksmiths, the business has been operating in Market Square Shopping Centre since it opened in 1985 and is the only original tenant left in the centre. Ozwide Locksmiths owner John McCarter puts this down to the quality workmanship that keeps customers returning. Ozwide Locksmiths provides a 24hour mobile service as well as its two kiosks in Market Square and Waurn Ponds Shopping Centre. Both kiosks are multi-service centres providing laser, hand and machine engraving, watch batteries and repairs, knife and scissor sharpening, trophies and giftware. “We’re Geelong’s premier engravers with over 40 years’ experience,” John emphasises. “We have a large list of referrals from Geelong’s top jewellers including Thomas, Duffs, Prouds, Michael Hill, Saleras and Butterfly Silver.” Ozwide Locksmiths has some special offers for the months of November, December and January, including Bosch security systems installed and fitted for just $999. Half-price shoe repairs and a special on automotive transporter keys for only $95 are also available. Ozwide Locksmiths offers the new

Keyport system, a single stylish gadget incorporating car and house keys, a USB flash drive, a mini-light, a bottle opener, loyalty tags and a pen. But it’s the good old-fashioned customer service that’s the focus of John and sons Christian and John jnr.
“We want to see our customers again, so we go out of our way to make it a pleasant experience when visiting any one of our service centres,” he says. Along with Brian Woodman, they are all qualified tradesmen. Ozwide Locksmiths is also a mem-

DECK-DOC’S unique timber oiling system has attracted attention from around the world The Geelong-made product has had a request from a large timber merchant in South Carolina to manufacture Deck-Doc system under licence. Deck-Doc has been sold to numerous consumers in countries including the USA and Canada despite the freight costing more than the product Overseas consumers who had been dissatisfied with existing products available in their respective countries are impressed with the Deck-Doc technology. The system has been used successfully around Australia on projects and venues such as Ham-
ilton Island Marina, Docklands’ boardwalk, Brisbane’s waterfront and in New South Wales parks. Leading architects now often specify Deck-Doc for use in their own projects. Robert Hyland developed the system for home-owners confused about the best coating for their timbers. Deck-Doc overcomes problems such as cracking and peeling membrane coatings to “get the job done right the first time around”, Mr Hyland says. He invites prospective customers to Deck-Doc’s factory showroom for tips and advice. “We want to offer advanced knowledge on how the different
coatings stand up over a two-year period and the ongoing maintenance required. From this they can make an informed decision on the best type of coating for their type of timber and application.” Deck-Doc also offers a service to clean, oil and stain decks and other timber structures. Annual maintenance can also be arranged. Free quotes are available by phoning Mel on 0499 770 170. Deck-Doc’s showroom is open 10am to 4pm at 53-55 Essex St, Moolap. More information is available by phoning 5248 8164 or visiting deckdoc.com.au.

Denis Williams - Owner
IMPROVING a car’s power by up to 30 per cent while actually improving fuel economy sounds like a big ask for a Land Rover, BMW, Mini or Jaguar or other European marques. Not so, says Hunter Cuthill director Adam Hunter. It’s readily achievable by using top-line Autologic technology, he advises, adding that it’s also a sound way of ensuring efficiency performance in a more-sustainable fashion. Hunter Cuthill, in Geelong West’s Autumn St, specialises in quality independent servicing and repairs to all BMWs, Land Rover, Mini and Jaguars - as per factory schedules and directives and with full book service. The business also services car makes including Peugeot, Renault and Citroen. It is the only service centre in Geelong outside of direct dealers with the software and diagnostic equipment for these brands. “We utilise state of the art diagnostic equipment from Autologic, the world’s leading independent vehicle diagnostic software,” Adam says. “It’s the only independent tool that can program control units. Autologic also offer software power upgrades for diesel and some petrol engines, giving 30 per cent more power while improving fuel economy.” Hunter Cuthill is also right across the best battery choices to meet the energy demands of European cars. VARTA batteries, powered by AGM technology, feature advanced equipment such as start-stop technologies and regenerative braking systems. “This is a battery that delivers optimal performance, faster conductivity and reliable starting power, even when the charge is low,” Adam says. “AGM batteries deliver up to eight times the cyclic stability of conventional flooded batteries resulting in a longer battery life.” Hunter Cuthill is at 9 Autumn St, Geelong West, phone 5229 4299 or visit huntercuthill.com.au.

IndySport Finals dream all but over before Christmas break
Geelong left playing for pride GEELONG Cricket Club’s finals hopes for season 2014/15 appear all but over after the Cats failed to defend 165 against Footscray Edgewater last Saturday. Corey Ogle (2/28), Jake Sheppard (2/45) and Jeremy Hart (2/39) all tried their best but Geelong simply didn’t have enough runs on the board. This weekend brings a Saturday/Sunday two-day game at home against Monash Tigers. Coach Damian Shanahan will be looking to see who still has the fire in the belly and wants to show some pride for the club. In Geelong Cricket Association, Geelong City staged a remarkable late comeback to wrestle back the momentum in its match against Bell Post Hill.

Batting first, the Sharks flew out of the blocks, putting on 110 for the first wicket as Richard Oliver continued his good form to make 82. But Bell Post Hill stuck to its task as Dylan Stojanovski (4/23) led a stirring comeback to dismiss the visitors for just 196, a score City would have been disappointed with after its good start.
With 18 overs remaining, the Panthers hoped to wipe a good chunk off their target but Kent Agg (4/6) had other ideas. The veteran fast bowler destroyed the top order to see the hosts finish the day on 6/25. It’s hard to see how Bell Post Hill can get out of this one, which means City should consolidate its spot in the top two. In division two, Torquay won the toss and elected to bat against Highton but, at 5/82, the Tigers might have been left wondering whether they’d blown a golden opportunity. Luke Daffy (6/53) was bowling well and the game was in the balance. But Shane Thompson, batting at number seven, made a fantastic 111 not-out to propel the Tigers to a competitive 243.
Torquay capped off a solid day’s play by taking two quick wickets as the Heat finished on 2/31. Highton has been in good form and won’t go down without a fight but Torquay should have enough runs on the board to claim an important six points. And in division three, Teesdale put in a great performance just when it mattered most, dismissing Shelford for just 167 before knocking 29 runs off the total for the loss of just one wicket. For Shelford, Michael Lymer (51) and Luke Turner (43) were the only ones to show some fight in a poor batting performance, while Alistair Woods (4/29) was the pick of the Rams’ bowlers. Teesdale should be too good tomorrow unless Shelford can pull a rabbit out of the hat.
Warming weather provides hot action on snapper in bay and offshore won Heads. A 70cm kingfish was also caught in the area by an angler chasing snapper. Roy Cusani and daughter Gabriella fished the Werribee River, with the latter catching a 41cm bream on a tube worm bait. Wurdee Boluc Reservoir was the standout freshwater location. Michael Evans banked some outstanding redfin to 46cm on Fish Arrow soft plastics. Ballarat’s Lake Wendouree produced good-sized trout and redfin. Slowly trolling shallow-diving lures such as Cranka minnows accounted for both species. Bank anglers caught brown trout to 2kg with mudeye under a float or with mudeye-imitation flies cast on sunset. The Barwon River continued fishing well for redfin to 800g. Larger fish were taken on lures but the reddies were spread out, with anglers fishing from kayaks finding them down past Landy Field and right up to Queen’s Park. Trevor Holmes reported that Lake Toolondo was productive for brown trout. Trevor used a holographic 13.5g Tassie Devil to catch a healthy 2kg fish, while mudeyes under flats also caught trout. Options for the next week include trevally at Queenscliff Harbour or fishing with soft plastics on the spoil grounds off Clifton Springs for snapper and salmon. Freshwater action should be best at Wurdee Boluc Reservoir for anglers prepared to fish hard for big redfin.

THE fishing continued warming up with the weather over the past week. Snapper remained the main target of most anglers, and for good reason, too. Fish to 4kg were continually caught at the turn straight out from Clifton Springs’ boat ramp on baits such as silver whiting and squid. Trolling for snapper was an excellent option, with lures such as Sebile Koolie minnows or Rapala tail dancers working well down at 8m to 10m. Anglers enjoying the most success while trolling noted that locating bait balls on the sounder was the key to catches of snapper to 6kg from areas such as the Curlewis Bank. Squid remained present in healthy numbers on the shallow weed beds off Clifton Springs. Smaller jigs were best. Pike and salmon were taken on the spoil grounds by anglers trolling lures diving about 2m. Some of the pike were over 1m and the biggest salmon nudged 2kg. Corio Bay produced snapper to 4kg from North Shore on both soft plastics and bait. Stingray Bay’s spoil grounds fished well for flathead and pinkie snapper. Casting soft plastics such as Gulp Turtleback Worm in Pumpkin Green caught many fish. The grammar school lagoon hosted catches of bream and flathead, with lures again more productive than bait. St Leonards Pier remained popular
