SUMMER is upon us and, while everyone is reminded to stay alert over the fire season, the Yarra Ranges has plenty to offer. The views alone are a perfect reason to visit the Yarra Valley as the sun rises – the reflection off the grape vines is something you must see for yourself. Enjoy a glass of vino, take in the views and induldge in the wonderful local produce this wonderful area has to offer. This area isn’t all about wines, though. There are many family friendly activities to do, too. Fancy a spot of antique shopping? There are so many fantastic antique stores and op shops in the area, make sure you visit Yarra Glen, Healesville and Tecoma. And what about the fantastic playgrounds these towns have to offer? Yarra Glen’s playground is amazing and so is the one in Montrose, and don’t forget the Seville Water Park for hours on hours of fun. With so much to do, you could spend a week or two in the Yarra Ranges and still not get to do it all. It’s a wonderful area – get out there and enjoy it. I sure plan to this summer. Healesville Sanctuary

The rocking horse outside the post office in Main Street has entertained local kids and captivated visitors for three generations. Still costing only 20 cents, the ride has become a Healesville icon. It can be found outside the door of the post office.

The sanctuary was established in 1934 and has since become the pride of Healesville. Visitors come from around the globe to encounter native Australian wildlife such as platypi, kangaroos, echidnas and koalas. Located on 30 hectares of land in Healesville, the sanctuary is also home to the Australian Wildlife Health centre and is heavily involved in conservation efforts.

Spirited drive in a Ferrari By MELISSA MEEHAN SMOOTH curves and winding turns, and that’s just the car. Driving through the Yarra Valley, onto the Black Spur a loud, bright red Ferrari 458 Italia sure gets attention. Never before had I had the experience of driving a car so powerful, or even one that turned as many heads – my old Mazda 3 or newer Holden Barina doesn’t exactly have the same wow factor. Already based in Sydney and the Barossa Valley, Prancing Horse has started its new venture that couples driving days with the best of the Yarra Valley. “The idea is to bring people to this area, experience driving one of our cars, but also experiencing all that the Yarra Valley has to offer,” business partner Matt Thio said. “We don’t want people just to come for the day, we want them to spend a night or two at a local Bed and Breakfast, visit local wineries and enjoy everything that is here.” It sounded great, so when Prancing Horse invited my partner and I to see for ourselves, we just couldn’t refuse. Our first stop was Balgownie Estate for a quick safety briefing and photos with the red beast of a car. Even here, it was turning heads at a conference being held at the winery. Then it was all systems go, as we hopped into the car. Still nervous to drive such an expensive and powerful machine, I let my partner take the wheel. 6 SUMMER 2014

The only way to describe his excitement is like a kid at Christmas time. I have never seen anyone so happy. We followed Matt down Maroondah Highway and the Black Spur to Dom Dom Saddle, where it was my turn to get behind the wheel. My nerves were calmed by the fact that Matt was driving ahead of us, radioing in about any traffic hazards up ahead. Never having driven a manual car, the paddle gear system was interesting – the car was manual, but there was no clutch. I quickly found that the louder the car got, the sooner I should drop a gear, or is it go up a gear? Either way, it was like nothing I had ever done before. Soon enough, the drive was over and we were treated to a delicious two-course meal back at Balgownie Estate. Rock Berry Jam is back again in 2015 with headline acts including Jon Stevens, Daryl Braithwaite, The Black Sorrows, Ross Wilson, Jason Singh, The Flaming Moes and Where’s Joss. It’s a pretty fabulous line up and tickets are now on sale and starting to move. At just $70, to see seven acts – that works out to $10 for each act on Saturday 21 March. Organiser Lisa Glassborrow said the 18+ event starts at 2pm and runs until 11pm. “We really wanted to bring an affordable event to the local area,” she said. “It’s a day where everyone can come and enjoy a great day of traditional Aussie rock and sing-along to all the classics.” It’s the second year the event has run, the first ran in 2013 as a fund-raiser for the Silvan Football Club to get some lights, so their players could train at night. “It’s not for the footy club as such, more about off-field activities,” she said. “But at the end of the day, it’s an event for the community.” For more information, go to www.rockberryjam. com.au.

Fallen tree inspires poet A FALLEN tree has been turned into a work of art. The massive tree that crushed Belgrave’s Micawber Tavern in August inspired Cameron Semmens to create a poetic piece on the stump. The poem called A Truncated Apology detailed the battle between the forceful weather and the tree barely standing in the ground by its roots. Mr Semmens said as he kept passing by, he thought how the tree would be a beautiful canvas for his poetry and to explore personification. “I just thought, I wonder what that tree is thinking,” he said. “It is a temporary artwork, since the stump has now been removed which is good, Having lived in Selby for two years, Mr Semmens said the mountain ashes amaze him how they battle gravity.

Antique has great value By GEORGIA WESTGARTH PETER Allen’s catchy tune ’Everything old is new again’ is the perfect song to get you ready for a day of antique shopping in the Yarra Valley. The experience sure does let your imagination run wild, conjuring up images of where the treasures you’ll find once came from and who they belonged to before they were yours. The beauty of this kind of shopping is that you won’t find it anywhere else. A whole one hundred years and older, antique shopping is a great way to teach the youngsters what life used to be like and reinvent jewellery, bric-a-brac and furniture for a whole new life in your home ... because everything old, truly is new again. Antique shopping has grown tremendously in popularity in recent years, with recycling and an appreciation for the past on top of the list for young savvy shoppers. Piggery Cafe Sherbrooke The recently opened cafe bakery is the brainchild of Vue de Monde chef Shannon Bennett, and offers an idyllic atmosphere as well as outstanding food. With a six-acre vegetable garden on site, almost all of the produce used in the cafe is grown on the property and other fresh food such as pork and dairy is sourced from local farms. Head horticulturalist Robert Proudlock employs biodynamic practices to cultivate produce in the rich volcanic soil of the Sherbrooke Forest. The menu gives diners the opportunity to request dairy free, gluten free, vegetarian or vegan options and fresh gourmet salads round out a varied selection. You might think that biting into a ripe, juicy blueberry is the ultimate summer fruit experience but Alison Withers and Eric Driessen at Badger Creek Blueberry Farm have gone one better. The couple, who put blueberries on the Yarra Valley map with their popular Badger Creek cafe, are now specialising in Blueberry wines. Alison and Eric made the move from cafe to cellar door three months ago offering tastings and sales of their delicious range of Badger Creek Blueberry Farm wines and St Ronan’s unique apple and pear ciders. The blueberry range, using 100 per cent blueberries grown on the farm, includes a still wine, sparkling wine and two fortified wines. The award-winning St Ronan’s Methode Traditionelle apple and pear ciders, along with an ‘on tap’ apple cider, are uniquely Australian. One thing that remains the same is the great view. Beer, beer glorious beer

By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM AMONG the many gems of the Yarra Valley are the breweries, each bringing something special to the craft of beer and cider-making. This brewery trail makes for a perfect day out in the valley, sampling the best drinks the region has to offer. Coldstream Brewery Coldstream Brewery is located at the gateway to the valley and brews nationally celebrated beer and cider. Though no longer brewing onsite, the former brewery has been transformed into a pub decked out to accommodate those wishing to sample the famous brew. The beer remains true to the original recipes, combining high quality hops, malt and yeast to form a beer that has become a favourite of the valley. The cider has become equally as popular, using Victorian apples crushed and cold fermented to give the drink a pleasant fizz. The Coldstream Brewery has also got lunch covered, with an extensive menu to complement the drinks that keep people coming back. It is located at 694 Maroondah Highway, Coldstream. Phone: 9739 1794. Hargreaves Hill Venturing further into the valley, Hargreaves Hill Brewing Company began brewing in 2004 and since then has established itself as one of the premier breweries of the valley. Destroyed in the Black Saturday bushfires of 2009, Hargreaves Hill continued to brew with the help of other local brewers until a new brewhouse was built in Lilydale. Offering a variety of beers, the company has recently begun national distrubtion of Pale Ale and Hefeweizen, which is a win for those who just can’t get enough. Matching its quality brews is a dining menu created specifically as ‘beer friendly.’ The restaurant uses local suppliers and also offers a wine list from boutique Yarra Valley producers. Hargreaves Hill is located at 25 Bell Street, Yarra Glen. Phone: 9730 1905. White Rabbit Driving through Healesville, it’s hard to miss the White Rabbit Brewery and it has certainly become an icon of the area. The brewery offers pale and dark ale created through an

open tank brewing process unlike any other. So popular is the brew that White Rabbit’s Dark Ale won gold at the 2010 Australian International Beer Awards. Two custom-built 5000 litre open fermentation tanks take position inside the unique brewery, which is decorated with imagery from Alice in Wonderland. A variety of pizzas are also served to make for a relaxed and casual atmosphere that delights locals and visitors alike. The brewery is scheduled to close at the end of May 2015, so now is the time to experience a true gem of Healesville. The White Rabbit Brewery is located at 316 Maroondah Highway, Healesville. Phone: 5962 6516. Napoleone Cider The Napoleone family has been growing fruit in the Yarra Valley since 1948 and have perfected the craft of cider-making at their brewery in Coldstream. Using apples and pears grown on site, the brewery produces a variety of flavours including apple, pear, apple and pear, cloudy apple, veil aged and method traditionelle pear cider. Fruit is grown, picked, pressed, fermented, bottled and sold on site. The brewery and ciderhouse is attached to Meletos restaurant via a viewing window where patrons can observe the crafting process and various ciders, making for an enjoyable day out. As visitors wander throughout Gembrook Market on a sunny Sunday morning, a myriad of interesting people and stalls await. Visitors can cast their eyes on attractions nestled beside Gembrook’s iconic Puffing Billy Station in the Main Street such as the Free Recycle Spot where Merle can be found alternating as a volunteer at Puffing Billy and the custodian of the treasure trove of ‘odds and sods’ ready for the taking. Visitors can donate a couple of their hand-me-down ‘treasures’ and happily leave them for someone else. Continuing through the market visitors will come across jewellery or new and reworked arts and crafts, fresh free range eggs, honey and Pam the Nut Lady. They will hear the occasional busker as they walk under the shelter of the heritage listed Bhutan Pines. While Puffing Billy steam train choofs its grey puffed smoke creating excitement for enthusiasts of all ages, family and friends gather to pause at the market cafe area to taste what’s on offer. There’s Maria’s top quality coffee, Paul’s Hill Top Farm Gourmet Meats which usually has steak specials along with pie specialties of beef burgundy, pork, scallop pies and the traditional English gammon. Further into the market visitors can sample a sip or two of Tony Todisco’s Wines or buy a bag of freshly picked locally grown apples, pears and lemons, or organic fruit and vegetables. There’s always room for a tasty sausage or bacon and eggs to raise money for Gembrook community groups, CFA, Emerald Primary School or the cricket club. Here visitors may even find Chris from the Gembrook RSL taking orders then resurfacing in another guise to make sure the market runs smoothly along with co-ordinator Peter attending his Australian made sheepskin footwear stall. Held every fourth Sunday of the month from 9am until 2pm, Gembrook Market is run by a team of local volunteers who are always willing to welcome new faces. Gembrook Market welcomes dogs on a leash and is one of the few markets in Melbourne where dog owners can cheerfully walk their pets through the market. Cindy and Tony with their dog treats will certainly cater for pets’ appetites and the jumping castle is there to entertain the youngsters. By GEORGIA WESTGARTH WHEN the sun comes out, so do the vintage cars. The warm weather provides the perfect conditions for a day trip through the Yarra Valley, where car shows galore. For car enthusiasts and those that appreciate a good set of wheels and some polished duco, the Wandin Custom Car and Bike Show is for you. This event has truly grown into its own, from just a small group of cars displayed in the local shopping centre car park, the Wandin Car show is now a huge event showcasing up to 700 exhibitors from all over Victoria. If you’re after a one-stop shop for cars and bikes, the Yarra Valley turns it up over the summer time, with day trippers taking their fancy four wheels for a spin in the valley’s sunshine and Wandin’s slick four and two wheel show, no exception. In its sixth year, the show features pre-1985 cars and bikes and refreshments to keep your eyes peeled at the polished goods. A gold coin donation goes to the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal, along with a CFA barbecue and wood-fired pizzas, hotdogs and soft drinks available from Wandin Yallock and St Mary’s Primary Schools, as well as Mr Whippy, who’s known to make an appearance. You’ll find the gas guzzling crowd at the Wandin East Recreation Reserve from 5.30pm, with last year’s show producing more than 650 cars and bikes. This year, they are hoping to raise more than $20,000 for the Good Friday Appeal and will be open until March 2015. Show dates: 22 October, 19 November, 17 December, 21 January, 18 February and 18 March. If you can’t make it to Wandin’s car show extravaganza, Healesville put on a fantastic event just a few days later. Be sure to keep Sunday 22 March free, with the 9th Mountain District Car and Bike show taking over the Healesville Showgrounds. You’ll get to wrap your eyes around some vintage classics, hot rods and custom cars, bikes, utes and trucks, with live bands playing from 10am, setting the scene for a fun four wheeling day of food, music, cars, prizes and presentations. With more food stalls than ever before, the event is a Healesville favourite, with all the proceeds going to charity. Children under 16 enter free and entry for adults is just $5. The Mountain District Car and Bike Show isn’t just a day for the petrol head in the family, but a nice day out for everyone as well as a thorough education in cruisin’ .

At the time of the devastating bushfires, Ms Day was living in Kinglake where she gathered inspiration on community spirit to create a work of art, a mosaic on a turtle. She said her work has been greatly inspired by Liz Lucas from Yarra Valley Gifts. “Liz has put so much effort into displaying my work and inspiring me to do what I do,” Ms Day said. “She’s so passionate about what she does and she has always encouraged me to better myself.” Yarra Valley Gifts promotes local and Australian made products from glassware to hand crafted jewellery and skin care products. Her work is environmentally friendly and she encourages recycling to be used to prevent waste.

Fun and adventure the drawcard By KATH GANNAWAY IF A playground is safe, clean and has equipment to suit different age and ability levels, it will tick most of the boxes for the grown-ups. For the kids, it’s all about adventure and fun. There’s no doubt that, next to clean toilets, a playground where the kids can run off some energy has to be top priority when holidaymakers pull up for a pit-stop with the kids. The Yarra Valley, Dandenongs and the Ranges have an abundance of fantastic playgrounds, most with the added bonus that they are located in beautiful parks, close to other attractions ... and, yes, toilets. The Tourist News team has short-listed 10 of the region’s ‘funnest’ playgrounds, and whether you’re stopping for a break as you pass through one of the region’s beautiful towns, or spending time in one spot, the kids will thank you for keeping this list in your glovebox. 1. Montrose Community Playground. A wood-style playground, lots of swings, a sensory garden and a large central climbing net – the one and only in Australia. Picnic/barbecue facilities.
