School mourns By JONATHON HOWARD
A DEEP sadness has fallen over the community this week following the horrific road deaths of Noosa Pengari Steiner School teacher Andre Vogel and 16-year-old student Gabriel Runge in New Zealand on Friday 28 November. The pair lost their lives in a terrible head-on accident involving a milk tanker on North Island State Highway 5 south of Settlers Road about 4.30pm near Reporoa. The deaths prompted an outpouring of support from across Australia and New Zealand as students and staff struggled to come to terms with the loss.
One was a young man with his whole life ahead of him, the other a 36-yearold father who shared his passion for nature and adventure with his two girls. For five days, Gabriel and Andre experienced the natural wonders of New Zealand in what would be their last adventure. The group of two teachers and seven students from Noosa Pengari Steiner School had just finished walking the Tongariro Crossing and were travelling in a minivan to Rotorua when the crash occurred. New Zealand Police said the school’s minivan had a head-on collision with a Fonterra milk tanker and, although in-
vestigations are continuing, it appeared the minivan carrying the group may have crossed the centreline. A second teenage boy was rushed to Waikato Hospital in a serious but stable condition. The teenager has since woken from his coma and his parents are by his side. The remaining six students and second teacher Tricia Jeffree returned home early on Monday morning and they attended a special school ceremony the same day. Principal Allen Kloeden said the students were determined to do so, despite very little sleep after a late return home. Continued on page 4

Pub stays, name goes By JONATHON HOWARD A NATIONAL campaign to find a new name and brand for the former Ettamogah Pub could be one option for the future of the iconic building. Aussie World general manager David Thompson said he wanted to assure Noosa residents and visitors that the pub at Palmview will remain and the only thing to go is the name. Mr Thompson said media reports had exaggerated the situation and speculation that the building could be demolished was “simply false. Mr Thompson said the pub would remain and Aussie World would continue to play a crucial role in the Sunshine Coast experience. However, the once considered iconic name and brand, which was created by the late cartoonist Ken Maynard was no longer a brand the company could use due to building
extensions and alterations. “We are focused on creating a bigger and better experience for locals and visitors to the Sunshine Coast, Mr Thompson said. “That includes building on the foundations of the facility and renaming the pub. Aussie World had recently spent $172,000 renovating its mini-golf course and invested $72,000 in upgrading the sideshow alley. Mr Thompson hinted at a possibility of running a national campaign to find the right name for one of Australia’s most recognised pubs. “That’s one possible way, but we’re looking at several options, he said. YOUR THOUGHTS: "The pub with no name" - what would you rename the former Ettamogah Pub? Send your name suggestions to newsdesk@noosatoday. net.au
Man, 76, assaulted POLICE have charged a man after an incident at a golf course on Myall Street, Cooroy, on 12 October. It will be alleged that around 2pm a 46-year-old man repeatedly punched a 76-year-old man after an altercation about a golf ball. The elderly man was treated by a doctor for bruises and abrasions to his face. A 46-year-old Sunrise Beach man was charged with serious assault - person 60 years and over. He was due to appear in the Noosa Magistrates’ Court on 16 December.
Ball rakes in big bucks
The once iconic Ettamogah Pub building will remain on site, but the name and brand have been removed.

on to the market through camping outlets. “It’s one thing to buy these cheap toilets for camping, but just because it was cheap doesn’t mean you can just abandon it for someone else to clean up, he said. Discussions are already underway about new ideas including the possibility of installing temporary toilets during peak holiday periods, as was successfully trialed on Fraser Island. Noosa Today has spoken with National Parks regarding the idea of temporary toilets as well as trash issues, and a response was expected by next week. Mr Horsey said the clean up initiative was supported by a number of raffles to get the kids involved. “For each full bag of rubbish collected, we gave collectors a raffle ticket, he said. “The initiative attracted a lot of kids and it was great to see the kids working so hard to clean up the beach. To find out more, or to get involved with Surfrider Foundation, email surfridersunshinecoast@ gmail.com
THE garbage and human waste strewn across the Noosa North Shore was stomach churning for clean up volunteers over the weekend. The clean up was organised by Surfrider Foundation Sunshine Coast, which undertake two weekend clean up initiatives every year. Two portable toilets were found and campsites were left covered in broken glass from beer bottles tossed into open fires. Clean Up Double Island event co-ordinator Aaron Horsey said the Saturday and Sunday initiative attracted about 60 volunteers, which was down from the expected 100 due to weather conditions. “The beach was in better shape than our last clean up, (May) after Easter this year, but it’s up in the dunes where the real issues were obvious, he said. Mr Horsey said volunteers collected about 1.7 tonne of trash mostly plastic and glass. “Overall, the beach at the foreshore was in good condition, but the dunes were a mess, he said. “There were two portable toilets left behind and we also had to remove one three-seater couch. Mr Horsey said camp goers were resorting to cheap $40 portable toilets, which recently came
THE 2014 Sunshine Coast Charity Masquerade Ball was a huge success, raising $9032.95, which will enable 30 at-risk girls into the program. The Free to Shine charity has now identified and enrolled the first 10 girls out of the proceeds. Free to Shine works to empower women with education to prevent trafficking. The organisation is now working towards its next event and is in the process of identifying another 20 at-risk girls. To find out more visit: www.freetoshine.org
Traders decorating TEWANTIN business traders have pitched in to decorate the main street. Noosa Chamber of Commerce president Sarah Fisher said it had been a few years since Tewantin had any sort of decorations to mark the festive season. “So the traders banded together to provide some festive spirit for the community, she said. “They were helped by the very skilful and organised Barbara Sheriff from Noosa Travel, who did a wonderful job of organising the purchase and delivery of the decorations for the street. The Tewantin Traders will be having a networking night for all the Tewantin Businesses tonight (Thursday, 4 November) from 5.30-7.30pm at Riverdeck.
Critical after crash AN elderly woman was taken to hospital in a critical condition after two vehicles collided on Noosa-Eumundi Road, last Thursday. Police believe one car pulled out onto Noosa-Eumundi Road about 2.40pm, before being hit in the side by an oncoming four-wheel-drive. The 83-year-old driver of the first vehicle was trapped and the jaws of life were used to free her before she was taken to Nambour Hospital in a critical condition. The 38-year-old male driver and 43-year-old female passenger of the other car were taken to Nambour Hospital with minor injuries. The forensic crash unit are investigating the crash.

Unlocked cars shock By JONATHON HOWARD NOOSA Police were shocked to discover almost 20 per cent of vehicles checked at Sunshine Beach and Sunrise Beach were left unlocked on Saturday 29 November. Community crime reduction officer Constable Tara Nolan said Noosa Police checked 91 vehicles across the two suburbs to see whether they were locked and had any valuables in sight. Of those 91 vehicles, 21 were found to be unlocked and one vehicle
owner had left a mobile phone in clear view. Constable Nolan said police issued 11 fines and 10 warnings to those motorists who had failed to secure their vehicles. Police offices will soon be visiting Noosa Heads to carry out beach footpatrols and further vehicle checks. Constable Nolan said the following few easy steps could help people avoid becoming a victim of “snatch and grab” crime. “Police are encouraging local
community members and tourists to ensure they secure their vehicles and remove any valuables as we are entering our busiest time of year,” she said. “Police urge holidaymakers not to leave personal belongings unattended on the beach; this includes mobile phones, wallets, jewellery and car keys.” Constable Nolan said the “Lock it or Lose it” campaign aimed to educate and remind locals and visitors to secure their cars and remove any valuables before leaving their car unattended.
“Remember, criminals do not go on holidays,” she said. “If anyone sees any suspicious activity around vehicles, car parks or beach areas, they should contact police immediately.” Anyone with information which could assist police should contact Crime Stoppers anonymously on: 1800 333 000 or crimestoppers.com. au For all non-urgent police reporting or general police inquiries contact Policelink on: 131 444 or Policelink. qld.gov.au

Noosa Heads Daybreak Rotary committee member Jeff Williams with Lara Carrington, Anaru Burling and Savannah Hobson, who will use funds donated from the club to buy school books for children in Cambodia.
Schooled in volunteering By JOLENE OGLE TWO months spent volunteering in a poverty-stricken community isn’t every school leaver’s idea of fun, but for three Coolum High students, there is no better way to spend schoolies. Savannah Hobson, Anaru Burling, and Lara Carrington, all 17, just graduated from Coolum State High School, and have decided to skip schoolies celebrations on the Gold Coast and head to Cambodia to work in a local school. Lara has travelled to Cambodia before, volunteering at the same school only last year. Anaru said she had never travelled to a country like Cambodia and said she was in for a culture shock for sure. took with them medical supplies donated by their school and extra cash donations that will be used to purchase school equipment and stationery. Noosa Heads Daybreak Rotary was one of the donors and committee member Jeff Williams said Savannah, Lara and Anaru should be congratulated. “The fact they have given up schoolies to go and do this is inspirational,” he said. “This just shows a level of maturity beyond their years. They should be congratulated and encouraged for thinking of someone other than themselves. “What the girls plan to do coincides with our ethos of assisting youth and world health.”
Value added NOOSA hinterland, Noosa Heads and Sunshine Beach has generated $21.5 million worth of renovation work for builders in the 12 months to August this year. Figures from ABS, compiled by the Master Builders Association, showed alterations and additions for the July-August-September quarter generated $36.2 million worth of work across the coast. The figures were highlighted in the Westpac Renovation Report, which found 89 per cent of Australians thought renovating was a good way to increase property values.
Peace appeal HIGHFLYER Sir Richard Branson will take on Noosa Council in the Planning and Environment Court next year over restrictions to his Makepeace Island retreat. Mr Branson will appeal against the council’s restrictions of a maximum of 20 people only on Makepeace Island at any time and no amplified music or noise from 10pm to 7am. Judge John Robertson will preside over the hearing scheduled for March next year.
Leading role DUAL AFL premiership winner Robert Copeland will help Noosa to rival unbeaten Mayne in next year’s QFA North premiership title. Tigers coach James Gellie told media sources the signing of 143-game AFL veteran Copeland, who will play and act as assistant coach to Gellie, was Noosa’s first step in avenging last year’s grand final loss to Mayne. “Leadership was one of the areas we thought we could improve and Robert definitely brings that," Gellie said. Copeland is the biggest off-season signing to date.

spend just over three weeks volunteering at a village school before getting their hands dirty when they also join a community group to help build school buildings. “We spend three and a half weeks at the school and then we travel south to help friends at another school,” Lara said. “We’re going to go and help them build for a couple of days.” Lara said the girls decided to take the road less travelled in the hope of spending their time off in a productive way. “I would rather grow as a person than just go (to schoolies) and not remember,” she said. “Also, when you get the travel bug you can’t get rid of it.” The three girls, who funded their own travel, jetted off on Sunday, and
A NOOSA resident says she is fed up with the way motorists continue to ignore the road rules when entering and exiting roundabouts, and she’s calling on local police to intervene. Maria Dia said she had been driven “crazy” during the past few years by the way people continuously failed to indicate when using Noosa’s many roundabouts. Noosa has around 15 roundabouts and boasts very few traffic lights, although it would appear to Ms Dia that not every driver knows how to use them. “People just don’t care or don’t know they are being inconsiderate,” she said. “I know this has been in the newspaper a few times trying to get drivers to do the right thing, but I would estimate about 95 per cent of drivers don’t play by the rules and I feel like I’m the only one with my blinkers working on the roads of Noosa.” Ms Dia said she saw at intersections and roundabouts drivers were increasingly too lazy to indicate or they took unnecessary risks. “I am driving around Noosa so frustrated and I see drivers failing to indicate, or indicating the wrong way at roundabouts,” she said. “I have to wait until they practically leave the roundabout to know that it is safe to move forward - I’m jack of it all someone has to make these drivers do the right thing.” Ms Dia said she noticed a lot of younger drivers around Noosa were failing to properly indicate at roundabouts. “I think the rules of the roundabout and the use of indicators should be printed every so often in the papers or advertised on TV or Facebook so everyone is aware there are rules to driving on our roads.” HAVE YOUR SAY: Have you had a near miss at one of Noosa’s roundabouts? An outpouring of emotion across international borders By JONATHON HOWARD
Local witnesses near the head-on crash described the scene as “horrific” as they scrambled to help people.
School mourns after crash From Page 1 The school is already planning to name a bridge in Gabriel’s honour and plans are underway for a permanent tribute to Andre. “A beautiful ceremony led by Indigenous person Waiata Telfer helped everyone to remember Andre and Gabriel, to be reminded of their spiritual presence, and to help in their grieving,” Mr Kloeden said. He said students also decided that a bridge they had been building at the school would be finished this week and named in Gabriel’s honour. “Gabriel was a passionate worker on the bridge being constructed on the grounds. As a tribute to him, his classmates are happy to have it named “Gabby’s Bridge”,” Mr Kloeden said. “Plans are also underway for a per-
manent tribute to Andre.” Mr Kloeden described the level of support in the form of messages, offers of help, and gifts from schools near and far, including from overseas, as overwhelming. “Counselling services were made available during the day to staff, students and parents. The school gratefully acknowledges the support of other local schools that have made their counsellors available,” he said. “The school community is immensely grateful for this. Noosa Pengari Steiner School Friends Facebook page creator Suzannah Pritchard-Laborie, a parent of one of Gabriel Runge’s classmates, described Gabriel as a “gentle soul” to media sources.

“Our son left school three years ago to home school but was still in contact with Gabby,” she said. “This child was the most openhearted, kind kid who would never say a bad word about anybody. He was such a gentle soul.” Ms Pritchard-Laborie said Mr Vogel would take the Steiner school students on mountain-bike rides and had picnics on her property. Her son, like many others, was still coming to terms with the loss of a friend. She said they were part of an extremely close-knit community and hundreds of posts to Gabriel’s Facebook profile from friends pouring out their grief had been made private at the request of his family.

Mass of cash out in a flash THE Sunshine Beach Surf Club’s 10 Grand in the Hand was a great success, with all tickets sold and one lucky local walking away with $10,000. Keegan Cirillo was the envy of the club, taking out the top prize on the day, while 20 other lucky winners took home $100. Keegan and her family have been involved with the Nippers program and she is now studying music at Armidale University. Currently saving for a $13,000 saxophone, the win will certainly come in handy for reaching her goal. The 10 Grand in the Hand event is the Nippers’ biggest fund-raising event for the year, with all proceeds from the day put back into the Nippers program.

Street spirits are up By JONATHON HOWARD THE Christmas spirit has arrived at Hastings Street as one of the most popular beach precincts in the country turned on its Christmas lights last week. Dozens of onlookers watched as santa switched on the lights about 6pm on Friday 28 November.
Santa then made a quick visit to hand out pre-Christmas gifts as carollers helped fill the air with Christmas sounds. The new lights display a dazzling array of colours which complement the busy beach-side street. The main roundabout on Hastings Street was the biggest attraction and the street was temporarily closed to traffic from 5.30pm.
The beautiful lights of Hastings Street means Christmas is just around the corner.

Business is brighter By JONATHON HOWARD NOOSAVILLE business owners let their hair down on Monday 1 December, for the Noosaville Business Association’s Christmas party. The event took place at Red on Thomas and attracted about 50 members as well as Noosa councillors Sandy Bolton, Joe Jurisevic and Frank Pardon. It was also a perfect time to switch on the Thomas Street roundabout Christmas lights, which will automatically turn on at 7pm every night during the Christmas period. Several business owners said Noosaville was coming out of a severe downturn since forced amalgamation and post global financial crisis. “It was a real struggle along Gympie Terrace during the forced amalgamation,” Cecilia Young, owner of Rimini by the River, said. “But since the de-amalgamation the business environment here has gone from strength to strength, thanks largely to the efforts by Noosa Council.” Ms Young said Noosa Council’s support to host Gympie Street Markets, the recent successful regatta and other initiatives were putting the business hub back on the map. “It’s great to have such a supportive council as we move back into a prosperous time for Noosaville,” she said. Noosaville Business Association president Andy Slavin thanked all association members and businesses that have helped make the year a success.

Preparations are already underway for the 2015 Noosa International Food and Wine Festival.

Food for thought THE 2015 Noosa International Food and Wine Festival (NIFW) is set to hit top gear next year with even more international stars and delicious foods coming to Noosa. The NIFW will run from 14-17 May at Noosa Heads and festival director Jim Berardo said the 2015 festival will have a different focus. “In 2015 we’re focussing on new trends and spearheading some original new events, such as a Wild Food Dinner, new and exciting food trails, lifestyle discussions, putting the industry’s trending topics front and centre,” he said. Among the new initiatives, next year’s line-up will also bring together more of what festival go-
ers want including more events on Noosa Main Beach and more beach parties. The Wild Food Dinner is new to the line-up and will be held on Noosa Main Beach, featuring Clayton Donovan, Matt Golinski, David Moyle, Sean McConnell and the festival’s executive chef Timothy Montgomery. The new food trail will offer event goers a real farm experience with a visit to a working farm with nomadic chickens and beef, centred on the ethos of dedication, passion and commitment to the highest standards in animal welfare and quality produce, followed by lunch in the Hinterland. Mr Berardo has promised the
perfect mix of the world’s leading chefs, forerunners of the food producing industry, Australia’s top wineries, award-winning produce and great live entertainment. The festival will also include the latest in food trends plus interactive discussions with the country’s top media and restaurateurs. Minister for Tourism and Major Events Jan Stuckey said the 2015 festival boasts a spectacular program that features as part of Queensland’s ‘It’s Live’ event calendar. “The Noosa International Food and Wine Festival continues to attract thousands of visitors to the Sunshine Coast by serving up the perfect fusion of food and wine
in spectacular natural surrounds,” she said. “From seafood lunches along Noosa’s attractive beachside to hinterland food trails, the 2015 program will tempt travellers to ‘make the most of the moment’. “Supporting major events such as this iconic festival is part of the Queensland Government’s commitment to grow overnight visitor expenditure to $30 billion by 2020.” This year, foodies will have access to pre-release tickets available from 12 December via the festival’s loyalty group, the Chilli Club, with the general ticket release scheduled for 5 January.

NOOSA Coast Guard QF5 is hoping Noosa Council will consider a newly proposed location for its memorial wall idea, after the Noosa spit was ruled out in September. Noosa Coast Guard is trying desperately to save for a new million-dollar rescue vessel, which will need to be purchased by 2021. The new memorial wall site, to remember lost loved ones, would be located within the Noosa Coast Guard’s grounds at Munna Point. The Coast Guard was required to again lodge a development application with the council before proceeding with the wall site, however early indications from the council have been positive. Meanwhile, Noosa’s busy waterways have proved to be challenging for several boat operators during the past week. Deputy flotilla commander QF5 Alan Hall said a large sailing vessel became stuck on a sandbar in the Noosa River “Our vessel, John Waddams, was able to refloat the vessel and guide it to a safe anchorage,” he said. “Next a vessel with mechanical problems was towed back across the bar and up to Davo’s boat ramp. “And Wednesday and Thursday was spent assisting a film crew making an advert for the RACQ.” Mr Hall reminded boaties that seasonal speed limits are now in force on the Noosa River, from T Boats all of the waters down to the Noosa Bar are six knots. Mr Hall said the speed reduction limits were “heavily policed” and will remain in place until 31 January.

Power goes to the people By JONATHON HOWARD SUNSHINE Coast mayor Mark Jamieson has reassured residents the community will be consulted regarding any proposed Planning Scheme amendment in relation to a site at Yaroomba. Mayor Jamieson’s comments were made following an outcry from more than 500 protesters at Coolum last week. The crowd demanded the Sunshine Coast Council reject a plan from Japanese development giant Sekisui House. Sekisui wants to construct 17 buildings on its Yaroomba site, 15 of which are over the planning scheme’s height restrictions. Mayor Jamieson is concerned misinformation being distributed suggests council’s consideration of a proposed planning scheme amendment in 2015 will be the end of the line for public consultation. “This is absolutely not the case,” mayor Jamieson said. “As I have said publicly
and in the media on many occasions, any Planning Scheme amendment, if it were to be proposed by council, would need to go through a number of processes before an amendment is actually made. “If a decision were made by council next year to propose a Planning Scheme amendment, this will only start a process throughout which the community has input. “It does not amend the Planning Scheme at that time. “Council will need to consult the Planning Minister and any proposed amendment that is subsequently released for public feedback would be just that - a proposed amendment. “The community would then have the opportunity to make formal submissions which are required to be considered by council. “If, after considering submissions, council were to decide to amend the Planning Scheme, it would once again be referred to the Planning Minister.” Mayor Jamieson said these
steps were required under legislation and would be “meticulously followed by council”. “But as I have stated over the course of the last week, we are a long way from that point,” Mayor Jamieson said. “Council will formally consider a proposed Planning Scheme amendment next year. “We are awaiting further information from council technical staff and, separately, from Sekisui House. That information is imperative to ensure councillors are fully informed before they consider any proposed amendment. “Having access to all information is in the interest of the whole community, no matter where individuals stand on this issue. “I reiterate again that if a Planning Scheme amendment were to be proposed at that meeting, the community will have an opportunity to make submissions and council will consider that feedback.”
Bikies spread Christmas cheer MORE than 200 motorbikes and their riders will make their way from Caloundra to Marcoola this Saturday as part of the annual Ulysses Club Sunshine Coast branch toy drive. The ride is the club’s annual Christmas charity appeal, with all donations of new toys, books and non-perishable foods donated to the Pyjama Foundations in support of their work with children in foster care on the Sunshine Coast. Club riders Kev and Maureen Johnson have more than 50 years' riding experience between them and said they had

A gaggle of … photo gals By JOLENE OGLE IF YOU are looking for a unique and eye-catching way to promote your business, a local women’s social group may just have the answer. Life Beyond 30 (LB30), a “gaggle” of 300 local woman, have come up with a novel way to promote local businesses while raising funds for their group and local organisation, United Synergies. For just over $340, the women of LB30 will co-ordinate and model in a professional photo shoot for your business. LB30 founder Wendy Wilson
said the offer was great for any business or brand that wanted to be represented by women of all ages and sizes, but found the price of a professional photo shoot was out of reach. “We will provide the studio, models, hair, make-up, photographer and the final images. All you have to do is provide the product and tell us how you want your shoot styled,” she said. Panga Productions have come on board to photograph the ladies and the images can then be used by the business on social media, their company website or in any marketing campaigns. Wendy said the funds raised
will be used to cover the expenses of the group as well as help the group to expand globally. “It can be very isolating when your kids grow up and leave the nest, friends get married, you lose a partner, are single, retired or when you move to a new town and lose touch with friends,” she said. “Life Beyond 30 is a gaggle of women with over 300 members who all thrive on being together and who allow you to be yourself.” A portion of the funds raised will also be donated to local organisation, United Synergies. To find out more about LB30’s unique fundraising offer, visit www.lifebeyond30.com.au.

Golden years in print By JOLENE OGLE MORE than 100 people packed the Environment Centre in Wallace Park on Wednesday night to celebrate the launch of a book to commemorate 50 years of the Noosa Parks Association. Titled “Noosa and Cooloola - celebrating 50 years of Noosa Parks Association” and written by Councillor Tony Wellington, the book recounts the battles, struggles and victories of the Noosa Parks Association
since its inception in the 1960s. Mayor Noel Playford launched the book, detailing stories of the NPA’s history through his own experiences. The coffee table book also features full colour photographs, capturing the region’s landscape, flora and fauna, alongside the recount of how local residents worked to rescue Noosa and Cooloola from mining, logging and unfettered development.

Noosa bags four By JOLENE OGLE NOOSA shone at the Queensland Tourism Awards last week as four local operators were awarded for their excellence in the tourism industry. Now in its 30th year, the Queensland Tourism Awards (QTA) are hosted by the Queensland Tourism Industry and pays tribute to the dedicated operators who have shaped and transformed the industry. Among the top awards was Tourism Noosa which won silver in the tourism education and training category for their innovative online service training program, Welcome to Noosa. Tourism Noosa CEO Damien Massingham said the award was a “huge accolade” with more than 1200 operators vying for top honours. “This award is also a great acknowledgement of how the tourism industry has embraced the program with its focus on improving customer service in our destination,” he said. “We are extremely proud that our industry-based tourism program has again been recognised as a true leader in the Queensland tourism industry.” Noosa Boathouse restaurant won gold in the tourism restaurants and catering services category, making this the second year in a row the venue has taken out the top award. Noosa Boathouse owners
Winners: RACV resort manager Darren McClenaghan, Noosa Boathouse's Phil Bradford and Danielle McPharlin, Tourism Noosa industry development manager Juanita Bloomfield, Belmondos owners Ryan Taylor and Jaxon Taylor. Steve and Danielle McPharlin together with Phil Bradford said they were thrilled with the award and said their success was down to a strong vision and a dedicated team. “We raise the bar every year and the Qld Tourism Awards program and submission process certainly plays a pivotal role in our continued growth and success,” Ms McPharlin said. RACV Noosa Resort also
won gold in their category, deluxe accommodation. RACV Noosa resort manager Darren McClenaghan said the award recognised the excellent facilities and holiday experiences on offer at RACV, as well as the Noosa team’s focus on providing exceptional service. This is the second year in a row RACV Noosa Resort has won gold in the deluxe accommodation category and, along
with Noosa Boathouse, are now in the running to enter the Hall of Fame if they win the award again next year. Belmondos Organic Market also won gold at the awards for the excellence in food tourism category, recognising the food company’s dedication to creating a unique shopping experience and proving organic, top-quality products and produce.
Youth, adventure market push By DAMIEN MASSINGHAM NOOSA was this week showcased to a group of leading agents from the youth and adventure market when Nomads hosted their yearly ‘travelmart’, bringing together agents from across Australia. About 30 agents from various agencies including Adventure Travel Bugs, Nomads Mad Travel Agents, Peterpan Adventure Travel and Backpacker World Travel visited Noosa for a product update on the destination. The agents participated in a range of activities from stand up paddling, taking a walk through the Noosa National Park, enjoying fish and chips on the river, a sunset cruise on the Noosa River and a two-day visit to Fraser Island. Our Industry Development manager Juanita Bloomfield hosted the agents for a sunset cruise followed by dinner on Monday evening. Feedback from the agents included that they enjoyed a magical sunset and were amazed as to how much is on offer in Noosa for this market. They were particularly impressed with how much can be self guided, such as seeing the Noosa Everglades by kayak and hiking. The youth and backpacking market contributes a significant 44 per cent to the total inbound visitor expenditure in Australia, spending over $7000 on average per person for their trip to Australia [source: Tourism Australia - Youth Travel Trends December 2013]. The youth and backpacking market are also strong users of social media and when enjoying experiences in the region, they share a wide range of messages that can only heighten the awareness and probability of further visitation by high yield consumers to Noosa. Getting a slice of this pie for the Noosa region brings economic benefits for all those living in our region. We can achieve this because Noosa is a must-visit destination for backpackers, giving visitors an opportunity to enjoy all that Noosa has to offer, while also being the gateway to Fraser Island. 1166032-HM49-14

Who's responsible?
To the Noosaville Business Association for hosting a ripper Christmas party and lighting of the tree on Monday. Good to see Gympie Terrace back in the swing of things. To the mother in last week’s Noosa Today “School for thought” article (27 November). Thankyou for your guidance and ideas - they’ve been very helpful with our son.
MAYBE the State Government and the Gympie Regional Council should take more responsibility instead of just receiving a lot of money for permits and camping fees. If you have a look at the back of a camping tag, it states bury toilet waste in a hole at least 15cm deep and away from water. Most of the campgrounds have ground water and because of the erosion, camping grounds are a lot smaller (two years ago, we camped with friends. One camper and seven tents and that same camp site is now only three tents). We have been camping and fishing for at least 30 years and have seen it all. Too many people. Too many cars. Too many campers. How is it Cooloola National Park has the only one-day pass when all the other national ocean parks are weekly? Cooloolala National Park has the cheapest weekly pass, which would explain why we are so popular. Maybe we might become like Bribie Island ocean beach camping and have campsite numbers and be asked to bring a portable toilet. We need a toilet waste station at the southern end or bring your own. How much more money do we need before we destroy our backyard? Deb Daybell, Tewantin.
Beach preservation
We live in a town of many roundabouts and it appears not everyone knows how to use them. Please be mindful of your indicator and give other drivers a break. Thankyou. To those people who continue to dump their trash up on Noosa North Shore. We are losing something very precious at the expense of people wanting creature “camping” comforts during their boozy weekends.
Touch. Wear. Desire.
MY HUSBAND and I have been visiting Noosa North Shore for many years. We have noticed in recent years the increase in traffic flow on the beach and have been having lots of discussions about how it could be better managed. We have a few suggestions: 1. That a rule be applied that states no traffic can travel up or down the beach an hour either side of high tide (this has been happening at North Stradbroke Island for a few years now). This will help protect the beaches. 2. Each campsite be numbered and specify the number of people allowed to camp there. For example, campsite one can have three families of four. The council has each family’s name, address and contact details. Rangers check the site once they leave and if left in good condition, no fine. This keeps camping numbers down and to be able to fine people for leaving their waste. 3. Locals pay a cheaper rate for beach permits, and increase it for visitors. 4. Locals receive a different sticker on their vehicle and this allows them a cheaper rate on the barge. 5. Increase the barge fee for visitors. We hope this helps as we wish to keep enjoying the North Shore and we want our children and grandchildren to experience it for many more years. The Robinson Family, Cooroibah.

THE recent fiasco of the Noosa Biosphere Reserve has now become a travesty of huge proportions. UNESCO and the people of Noosa have allowed their biosphere to be hijacked by pretenders who have converted it from a simple, user-friendly organisation into a complex and unfathomable conglomerate, which was always their intention. Great orations will never hide the duplicity
LENSCAPE
TWO fledgling tawny frogmouths near Cooroy Mountain were lucky to be alive after they were blown out of a tree by strong winds last week. The pair survived the almost twenty-metre fall to the ground, landing apart on the grass below. Local resident Vic Jakes came to the aid of the frogmouths and took this stunning photo for Noosa Today's Lenscape. “Daybreak saw one of the parent birds protecting one chick, while the other was totally exposed to the very real dangers that life presents to such young and vulnerable creatures,” he said. “I know that a fox regularly patrols the area and therefore decided to attach the part of the nest that had remained intact to the top of a fencepost near to the nesting tree and then reintroduce the two chicks to their new home location.” Mr Jakes said he had no certainty that the parent birds would accept the new nesting position. “But within a few minutes one of the adults was sitting on the nest, again protecting both chicks, which I estimate to be around 10 days old,” he said. “Provided there are no mishaps in the meantime, the youngsters should leave the nest after around four weeks.” Mr Jakes said he has been photographying wildlife for the past 28 years and he took the photo using a Canon EOS D60 with a Canon Ultrasonic EF 70-200 lens. Just ban ‘em I WHOLE-HEARTEDLY agree with Mr Bell’s letter in Noosa Today, 27 November, that smoking in all public places should be banned, also the reasons he has given for doing so. I only hope our local council acts on it ASAP. T. Williams, Tewantin.
with a heap of nonsense. Punishment today is too lenient. Jail time in no longer a deterrent (as they are let off and out early) and money is too easy to get from hand-outs to pay fines - no deterrent. So where’s the punishment to stop mad people hurting other people - the whip! (The whip) is the only answer to slowing up criminals. Give a few baddies a good whipping and the message will soon travel through to other baddies. Pain is the only answer left for effective punishment. No long, drawn-out court battles. My opinions. D. Lovelock, Noosa.
Don‘t shoot Always justified YES. Yes. Yes. Any police officer is justified in using their firearm against aggressive and dangerous people. Without a question and they should not have to go through so much investigation afterward either. They have been trained to do a job and they know how and when to use the weapon. Shoot to injure is not possible when someone is acting crazy. Try aiming at a moving target and hit it in the leg. No police officer wants to kill anyone unnecessarily. They’re out there protecting people, putting up
IN MY opinion, the police action in shooting a man to death because he damaged a few cars in a rage is unacceptable. We are not living in the USA where such occurrences may be acceptable because someone is carrying a gun and threatening people. Apparently the man had not injured any people, so where was the justification in causing his death? We do not want to live in fear in our own suburban streets from our own police force. K. Cameron, Peregian Beach.

Storms on the horizon, says the bureau WEATHER predictions from the Bureau of Meteorology show increased storms are heading towards Noosa this weekend, but dry and hot conditions are expected to return for the first two months of 2015. Senior forecaster Pradeep Singh said that in November temperatures climbed to a high of 40.5 degrees in Tewantin on 16 November. Mr Singh said the storm super cell that ravaged Brisbane and surrounds last Thursday, 27 Novem-
ber, was “completely unexpected”. “We were monitoring the storm cell as it approached Brisbane, but we did not anticipate the storm forming a super cell with such high winds (140km/h), heavy hail and rainfall,” he said. “It really is re-writing the storm books after it intensified so rapidly.” Mr Singh said coastal residents should prepare for further storms towards the weekend but it was “unlikely they would reach super cell magnitude”.
“There is some likelihood of hail in the storms and we’re anticipating some very active storms, but nothing to the levels of the Brisbane storm last week,” he said. Mr Singh confirmed that Queensland was entering an El Nino phase, in which dry condi-
tions would return and unpredictable weather patterns would continue. The term El Nino refers to the extensive warming of the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean which leads to a major shift in weather patterns across the Pacif-
ic. This occurs every three to eight years and results in drier conditions in eastern Australia. El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is the term used to describe the oscillation between the El Nino phase and the La Nina, or opposite phase.
An “unexpected” storm super cell smashed Brisbane last week and the coast could be next.
It’s time to change course A Tewantin koala corridor is putting our furry friends in grave danger as koala habitats make way for development, writes Koala Tracker columnist Alex Harris.

criss-crossing the corridor on which our koalas will be killed. As the demand for housing increases, long held large blocks of land and the magnificent trees upon them will be sacrificed. With loss of habitat the biggest killer of koalas, I find myself contemplating an alternative town plan. Not to stop development, but to encourage smaller footprints, dreaded higher density with fewer houses and more townhouses, and that long-feared upward movement, rather than ever-outward sprawl. A town plan bursting with clever design that provides amenity and aesthetics, and encompasses the homes of our wildlife neighbours rather than obliterates them. Perhaps we should hold a contest for our local design students, observers and professionals alike, that challenges us to
LOOKING at the koala sightings reported to KoalaTracker.com.au from Tewantin over the past few weeks, a clear corridor becomes evident. One that puts koalas in imminent danger, not just from the busy roads, but from the pockets of trees which provide food and shelter now, that will soon and inevitably be lost to small subdivisions - as have other such havens already become - new housing estates of one or two streets tucked in among the old, in old Tewantin. Lush trees fresh with scratches will give way to bulldozers, to lifeless brick and tile, flat fences barring the current course, and more bitumen

‘develop’ the allotments left and showcase what could be done, rather than what always has and surely will be done. And with that, let us have a reasonable debate on lifting the building height, on building fewer houses, while creating more homes. Because we right now have a choice - to continue to bulldoze the trees, or to keep what remains of green space and develop further where development already exists. Not everywhere; not to sky scraper level; not endless tall boxes, but perhaps a limited quantity and specified quality of taller residential or mixed use development would ultimately be the lesser evil. In the existing urban centres of Noosa Junction (bowls club to Cooyar along Lanyana Way), Noosaville (Gibson Road retail precinct to Elizabeth between Weyba Road and Albert), and Tewantin township itself, we have an opportunity to go up ever so slightly, with minimal impact to the wider neighbourhood. The reality is we have a rapidly increasing demand for smaller single level homes from an ageing and downsizing resident population who

Pain and passion meet beat BENNY PIKE
IN this column a couple of weeks ago I described how cruel and fickle sport can be. Noosa’s Pat Rafter was still at the top of his game with his continued involvement with the sport he loves - tennis. Then former world triathlon champion Jackie Fairweather finally threw in the towel after years of depression to take her own life. This is a woman who feared no-one in the triathlon world and never shied away from a new challenge. Her duel with fellow Aussies Emma Carney and Loretta Harrop just kept the rest of the world sitting back watching in awe. She excelled in the academic world through the sports science arena and, like Pat, was putting her all back in to the sport she loved. Then last week, out of the blue, we had a tragic accident, with cricketer Phillip Hughes cut down in his prime. His death galvanised the cricketing world - supporting his family, friends and team-mates on what can only be described as a bad day in the world of sport. The sport will continue and so will the bouncer, even though some may call for its dismissal. The First Test is off, but the series against India will resume as Phil would have wanted it to. New South Wales bowler Sean Abbott is not the culprit, he is the victim of being at the wrong place at the wrong time. His life has changed and sadly he must live with this accident forever, sport again showing how fickle it can be. Allow me to reminisce, in 1978-’79 my
boxing pathway directed to Reg Layton’s gym in Brisbane’s Woolongabba. My training and sparring partner was the great Hector Thompson, the Australian welterweight champion who had fought and lost at his crack at two world titles. No disgrace here, his opponents Ruben Olivares and Antonio Cervantes were considered among the world’s best. Hector came from very humble beginnings in Newcastle as he clawed his way to the top of the boxing world. During this time, he sadly defeated two fighters who passed away after the battle in the ring. Sure this dinky-dye Aussie was shattered on both occasions, but it was sport. No-one could forecast the outcome, it just happened with no malice intended. Hector helped me and many others, and for years after dominating Festival Hall he would always give his time to help kids in gyms in and around Brisbane. I can assure you that never once during his glittering career when Hector stepped into the ring did he want to win by breaking the rules of the game. Chance to celebrate SPORT has highs and lows, and I got the chance to celebrate our best at this year’s Sports Star of the Year Awards in Brisbane. It was a truly wonderful night and a great way for all to look back over 2014 with performances on and off the track. While not winning, Cooroy’s Sue Stanley and the Sunshine Beach under-17 surf team were finalists in the categories. A marvellous night with the highlight the induction of Maryborough’s dual Olympic champion David Theile AO into the legends. Until next time.

The Tewantin Noosa Cricket Club joined hundreds of Australia clubs in a show of respect for the family and legacy of the late Phillip Hughes.
They let bats do the talking By JONATHON HOWARD LOCAL cricket clubs and Noosa residents have joined in mourning the death of Australian cricketer Phillip Hughes. The 25-year-old lost his battle for life at St Vincent’s Hospital, on Thursday 28 November, in Sydney. Hughes had been in intensive care since being hit at the base of the skull while batting for South Australia on day one of a Sheffield Shield match against his home state New South Wales, on Tuesday 26 November. Messages of support for his family have since poured in from cricketers, sportspeople and members of the public from across Australia and around the world. The Tewantin Noosa Cricket Club joined thousands of clubs and resident by placing a “baggy green“ hat on an upright cricket bat, as a show of respect and unity to Hughes’s legacy. Tewantin Noosa Bowls Club member Gary Moss wrote a touching poem as a tribute to Hughes and his memory.
Tribute to Phillip Hughes PHILLIP Joel Hughes, number 408 is your baggy green. You handled the willow, as well as few we’ve seen. Youngest ever to get a double ton in your first test. And you will be remembered as amongst the best. ‘63 not out’, now etched in time, you thrilled many a crowd. You have done yourself, your family and your country proud. You touched more lives than you probably know. And you are now being honoured as the many tributes show. Some comfort knowing you left this world doing what you love. Now your guiding light shines brightly from the heavens above.

Property Management by Karen Seskis
Hello Karen, We have been looking at many investment properties to buy but sometimes get confused as everyone has a different opinion. Can you tell us, what do tenants really want in a property? Joan & Barry, Cooroy Hi Joan and Barry, Some of the
basics that we all know is they want space, a good location, clean and well-presented homes and access to transport and shops. Here’s
The owners of the home wanted a lowmaintenanace home to enjoy their land.
some extra info from our experience dealing with their preferences on the Sunshine Coast: • most tenants like to have a pool
Hope is uncontained
but will choose a better home over a home with a pool. • they’ll usually choose a bigger living area over a bigger balcony • better quality appliances over a larger home • bigger bedrooms are better than more dedicated storage space • a large majority rate greenery & gardens higher than more car parking • two-thirds would usually choose a home close to transport over a quiet location • good security - especially for the growing market of single females • ly screens and fans are more important than air conditioners to most • fully fenced yards are important • undercover parking with direct access to the house is also a winner If you would like an investor report on the property that you have purchased or considering to purchase, please call me direct on 0404088091, for a free inspection and analysis on the property! SOMETIMES all you need is the land you stand on, two shipping containers, and a clever design to create your dream home. Gabriela Calvo and Marco Peralta dreamt of living on their property outside of San Jose, Costa Rica, where they could be with their horses and enjoy the natural landscape, while being only 20 minutes from the city. Gabriela and Marco worked with architect Benjamin Garcia Saxe, who was given the challenge of designing a comfortable and practical home with two shipping containers and a budget of $40,000. “They made the very bold decision of exploring with me, the possibility of creating a very inexpensive house out of discarded shipping containers that allowed them to be debt-free and live the life they always wished for,” Benjamin said. “I strongly believe that they are an example of how, when we focus on the really important things that make us happy, creativity can then be used to try and search for that beauty, keeping within a very low budget.
Two 40-foot shipping containers were used to build this home in Costa Rica. Pictures: ANDRES GARCIA LACHNER
“It was important for me to provide them with the sunrise, the sunset, the spectacular views, and overall try and create a feeling of comfort and home.” The 1000 square foot container home was built using two 40-foot shipping containers set together with a raised mid-section, and no metal was wasted. “A roof between the two containers, made from the scrap pieces of metal taken to make the windows, not only creates an internal sensation of openness but also provides a cross ventilation, which is surprisingly sufficient enough to never have to turn the air-conditioning on,” Benjamin said. Benjamin designed Gabriela and Marco’s dream home, before the couple went on to construct the home themselves. The home features two bedrooms, one bathroom, a kitchen and living space as well as a front and rear porch.

So - what do renters want? RECENT data released by real estate analyst Michael Matusik suggests most tenants are happy to pay a premium for benefits when renting. According to Matusik, who regularly surveys both the buying and renting markets, the latest data shows tenants across the south-east Queensland region would pay a premium for perks such as a dedicated study area with free Wi-Fi and high-speed internet.

For fear of sounding picky, tenants also want a wellpositioned, well-equipped, functional kitchen with storage space and a view. Proper ensuites are also a must if you want to lure long-term tenants, plus better designed spaces for hanging your clothes.
Secure, off-street, undercover parking was also a perk worth paying for. Matusik also recommended allowing pets in a rental home to up the price as well as keep your tenant for longer.

Regardless of what assurances a tenant with pets may give you, an active border collie in a one-bedroom apartment is most likely going to end in disaster.” Matusik said, based on the data, five out of 10 renters surveyed said they would pay up to 10 per cent more in rent to get the perks listed. Another 24 per cent of respondents said they would pay up to 20 per cent more in rent.

You can catch Normie Rowe at Tewantin Noosa RSL for a free performance in the South Bar on Saturday, 6 December, from 8pm.
live today NOOSA’S LIFESTYLE GUIDE
Rockin' Rowe NORMIE Rowe has long been regarded as one of Australia’s most recognised and successful singers in a long and illustrious career that spans back to his teens in the early ’60s. In that era, there wasn’t an Australian singer with a bigger following than Normie. With a collection of number one hits and King of Pop awards, mass hysteria at every performance was normal. He had 11 chart toppers in the early days including his double gold ‘Que Sera Sera’ with its famous ‘B’ side ‘Shakin All Over’, ‘Ooh La La’, ‘Its Not Easy’ and ‘It Ain’t Necessarily So’. For over 40 years, Normie has been one of Australia’s favourite performers. In the ’60s, Normie recorded and toured in the UK, and then, in the early ’70s Normie was inducted into the Australian Army and sent to Vietnam, becoming our most
recognised soldier. Since that experience, Normie has worked tirelessly for better conditions for veterans of all wars. Normie’s career continued after the war, both here in Australia and internationally with shows in the USA, UK, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Greece, Turkey and New Zealand. Normie has perennially been a requested artist on national television shows, and was one of the most popular artists on the Long Way To The Top tour, which played to 160,000 people Australia-wide. Today, Normie is still performing countless shows nationally every year to packed houses, a testament to one of Australia’s true talents. You can catch Normie at Tewantin Noosa RSL for a free performance in the South Bar on Saturday, 6 December from 8pm.

sterms in Tasmania and Pedra Branca - a reef 27 kilometres out to sea. Surf reporter Teza McKenna described the latest Bonython film as an experience that anyone who loves the ocean needs to see firsthand. “Tim Bonython and his ASMF concept has single-handedly re-invented the stoke of an old-school cinema-style atmosphere with new-school cutting edge, high performance and big wave surfing,” Teza said. The film will run for a total two hours including an intermission. Booking is available online at discounted rates by visiting: www.ASMF.net.au or tickets are available at the cinema on the night subject to availability. Doors open at 5.30pm.

Very social venue MISS Moneypenny’s celebrated their first birthday last Thursday, with hundreds of locals joining in to celebrate the milestone. Miss Moneypenny’s opened on the Hastings Street strip a year ago, adding an element of sophistication and enticing locals who enjoy a cocktail at sunset on the footpath bar. Guests were treated to Napoli pizzas and the share boards that have helped make Miss Moneypenny’s a mustsee venue for locals and visitors. Noosa Today photographers were there to capture the celebrations.

FLOODS, junk mail, and the humble water pipe are among the quirky inspirations behind three exhibitions currently showing at Noosa Regional Gallery. Growing up in the suburbs with a plumber father meant Erica Gray’s young years were spent surrounded by pipes. These are brought to life through whimsical soft sculpture in Pipe Dreams - an exhibition that celebrates the mundane, the absurdity and the functionality of the humble pipe. Artist Joolie Gibbs drew inspiration for her abstract Flood Language 2 exhibition from the floods she’s witnessed during 20 years in Gympie. “The shapes made by the debris speak to me like another language, and they are quite beautiful, even though my response in my work is not representational, but more abstract,” she said. Ange Leech, meanwhile, brings blue-eyed monsters, dancing kangaroos and one-eyed monkeys to life in her exhibition A

The True Believers Tour Life of
brine PHIL JARRATT AS Stephanie Gilmore held her breath on a windy cliff at Honolua last week, and Carissa Moore stomped on a rail and brought Tyler Wright’s title hopes crashing down, the greatest female surfer in history (still, although Steph is closing the gap) watched the final minutes of the final of the Target Women’s Pro on her iPad screen with hubby Kirk Pengilly in a sun-filled Outrigger Little Hastings Street apartment overlooking Laguna Bay. Layne Beachley was going to be delighted either way, of course. The seven-times world champion loves being number one in the record books of course, but more importantly, she’s a patriot. Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, oy, oy, oy! Okay, the Hawaiian Moore got in the way of our trifecta, but it had been a great year for the Aussie girls, and a great year for the women’s pro tour. Carissa’s victory over Tyler Wright in the Maui final meant that Gilmore had claimed her sixth world title at age 26, the same age Layne was when she claimed her first, after eight years of trying. Steph Gilmore is back at her best, with plenty of tour years left in her. If you were a betting man, you’d put money on her equalling Layne’s record in the years to come, and probably going past her. Being such a competitive animal, Layne is never going to be completely happy with that, but she is also a superb motivator and team player (as showed at the London Olympics), so a big chunk of her wants nothing more than success for “her girls”. As we drove to the airport last Friday morning, Layne was in a mood to reflect on the conclusion of a stellar year for women’s surfing.

Layne and Kirk with Tourism Noosa crew at the Green Room. “The number one change is the prize-money, of course. When I was on tour it took me 20 years to win half a million dollars. This year, if one girl won every event she would have pocketed $600,000. That has really fuelled the competitiveness of the tour, and also the general interest in it. “Secondly, there’s the amount of attention, recognition and respect for the women we’re seeing on tour now. I remember constantly having to fight for that. There was a general lack of belief in the potential of women’s surfing, whereas now it’s being promoted, endorsed and supported. Now the people putting their hands in their pockets are true believers in women’s surfing. The respect that flows from that has rolled over into increased prize-money,
more events and better marketing in general.” Layne believes the new-look tour’s greatest assets are the girls themselves: “I’ve always believed that surfing has no greater marketing tool than the women’s tour, and you need look no further than the top five, starting with Stephanie Gilmore and Sally Fitzgibbons. They’re both beautiful girls who are great role models and incredible athletes who are respected around the world. Tyler Wright, Carissa Moore and Malia Manuel are also extraordinary beautiful talents that are generous with their time and appreciative of the opportunity.” She continues: “I think the women’s tour has made more progress than the men’s this year. hat, my analogy would be that the men’s tour is like the Olympic swimming squad and the women’s is like the boxing squad. The women have never had this kind of investment before and they’re soaking it up, whereas some of the men - and I don’t wish to offend by saying this - seem to have developed an air of entitlement. They’ve been on this journey a lot longer, they know what they want and they’re perhaps not as malleable as the women. The women are just going, wow, this is amazing! They need to keep that sense of gratitude, to make sure the level of investment and support continues.” Filming Pure Stoke LAYNE Beachley was in town to help me and the Panga Productions team put the finishing touches on our documentary, 8 Days Of Pure Stoke, which tells the story of surfing in Noosa and along the Sunshine Coast, and the role the Cricks Noosa Festival of Surfing has played over the last couple of decades. Layne, the festival’s unofficial ambassador for many years, is our star presenter, and also conducts several of the interviews. A shortboarder all her life, last week she learnt the finer points of nose-riding from Matt Cuddihy, tried a few beach lifts with tandem star Fred Branger, and went global on social media when dog whisperer Chris De Aboitiz taught her the basics of dog surfing. Layne and INXS star hubby Kirk also found time to join the Tourism Noosa crew for a drink at Eumundi’s Green Room. 8 Days Of Pure Stoke, produced with the support of Tourism Noosa and Sunshine Coast Destination Ltd, is expected to be completed pre-Christmas and have its debut screenings over the holidays.

Eggplant powers patties THIS one is for the vegetarians, but we promise meat eaters will love these delicious patties, too. Thank you to Donna Wright of Noosa, who has shared her favourite family recipe for eggplant patties. If you have a recipe you would like to share, simple email it to newsdesk@noosatoday.net.au Ingredients (serves 4): 1 large eggplant, roughly chopped. 1/2 cup breadcrumbs. 1 red onion, quartered. 2 garlic cloves or a teaspoon of minced garlic. 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese. 1/4 cup basil leaves, chopped or torn. 1 egg, lightly beaten. 1/2 cup plain flour. 2 tablespoons olive oil.
· · · · · · · · ·
Method: 1. Boil the eggplant in a saucepan until soft, drain and set aside. 2. In a food processor, blend the breadcrumbs, garlic, onion, parmesan, basil, egg and eggplant, add salt and pepper to taste. Process until the mixture is well combined, but not smooth. If mixture looks a little runny, add more breadcrumbs. 3. Put the mixture into a bowl, cover and place in the fridge for 30 minutes to cool. 4. Using floured hands and the mixture can be very sticky, divide the mix into desired portion size and roll into a ball. 5. Once you have used all the mixture, place the patties on a tray and pop into the fridge for another 30 minutes to firm. 6. Heat oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Cook patties for 4 minutes each side or until golden brown. Patties are best served immediately with a green leaf salad and balsamic vinegar dressing.

Club’s bistro drives ahead THE Tewatin Noosa Golf Club may have changed its name to Noosa Golf Club but the same good quality food and friendly service is still on offer at the club’s bistro. Chef Tony said the menu will still have many of the favourites loved by the golfers, such as the delicious pies made on site, home-made garlic and sesame calamari, smokey barbecue spare ribs and mustard crusted lamb rump. The public is welcome to dine in the bistro, which is also air-conditioned, offers tables overlooking the green and is wheelchair accessible via the lift. The club decided to change its name last month after 77 years operating as the Tewantin Noosa Golf Club. The club said the name change was a “bold move” designed to associate more closely with the Noosa brand and attract more local members and interstate and international visitors. Club president Arlene Penlington launched the new name on 22 November and said a whole new look will follow the change. “Along with our new name, we will have a whole new look - new logo, new colours and new signage at our clubhouse in Cooroy Noosa Road,” she said. “The history of the club won’t be lost. All our historic honour boards and records will remain as they are. “At a time when some golf clubs are fighting simply to survive, we are continuing to grow and see this exciting development as another step in the evolution of our great club.” The bistro is open seven days a week with lunch available from 11.30am and dinner from 5.30pm Tuesday to Friday.

Eye on chook safety The Australian Chicken Meat Federation (ACMF) has reported more than 80 per cent of calls received throughout the year have been from anxious customers wanting to know how to cook and handle chicken safely. THE ACMF said the number of calls increase in the lead up to Christmas with people fearing they may risk ruining the Christmas Lunch. ACMF’s Dr Andreas Dubs said over 5.4 million Australians fall sick as a direct result of poor food safety. “Anxiety levels also rise around food safety practices when people have more family and friends to feed around the Christmas table,” he said. “We are often asked how to know when a whole bird is cooked properly and also questions about storage. Frequent questions relate to whether chicken can be re-frozen once defrosted, can it be refrozen once cooked, and how long can raw chicken be stored in the fridge before being cooked.” Without a microscope, bacteria can’t be seen on chicken or other raw meat so it must be handled as if it were present. To reduce food safety risks when handling chicken, the ACMF recommend a few simple food safety rules to remember for a safe and stress-free Christmas lunch. Clean - keep everything - hands, boards,
It’s what’s inside that counts
Keep your guests safe this Christmas season by handling and cooking your chook safely. knives, fridge, freezer and storage containers - clean, particularly during the food preparation process. Chill - Raw and cooked chicken can be stored in the fridge at 5 degrees Celsius or lower for 2-3 days unless “use by date” on packaging stipulates otherwise. Cook - Cook thoroughly until the meat juices run clear (ie juices are no longer tinged with blood). The thickest part of the meat
should reach 75 degrees Celsius on a food thermometer. Separate - Keep raw chicken away from other foods in the fridge AND during preparation, so raw chicken juices do not drip on to other food that will be eaten raw, such as fruits or vegetables. Separate utensils, especially chopping boards, should be kept for uncooked foods, like fruit and salad vegetables, and raw meat.
A ROAST chicken is a great Christmas lunch staple. Why not try this pistachio and cranberry stuffing to make your meal extra special and add a little Christmas spirit to your plate. Ingredients: n 1.5 tablespoons olive oil. n 2 small brown onion, halved, finely chopped. n 75g dried cranberries (craisins), finely chopped. n 55g unsalted pistachio kernels, finely chopped. n 2 garlic cloves, crushed. n 245g fresh breadcrumbs (made from day-old bread or bought pre-made). n 2 eggs, lightly whisked. n 1/3 cup finely chopped parsley or other fresh herb you like. Method: 1. Heat oil in a large, non-stick pan over medium heat. Add the onion, dried cranberries, pistachio and garlic. 2. Cook, stirring, for 8-10 minutes or until the onion softens. 3. Set aside to cool slightly, about 5 minutes. Place the mixture into a bowl. 4. Add the breadcrumbs, egg and parsley and stir to combine. 5. Season with salt and pepper and allow to cool further before adding the stuffing to your uncooked chicken.

Retiree meeting to take the helm
Put your best foot forward for age fitness JOGGING can help slow the aging process, according to new research from the University of Colorado. According to the study, seniors who run several times a week for exercise use the same amount of energy walking as a typical 20-year-old. The study, led by Humboldt State Professor Justus Ortega, was published online in the PLOS One journal. It said older people who walk rather than jog for exercise only expend the same amount of energy as older, sedentary adults. The co-author of the study, Associate Professor Rodger Kram, said “the bottom line is that running keeps you younger, at least in terms of energy efficiency”. The study involved 30 healthy older adults with an average age of 69 who either walked or ran for exercise. The volunteers had to have been walking or running at least three times a week for 30 minutes or more for more than six months. Professor Ortega said it was wellknown that people’s “horsepower” declines as they age. “What’s new here is we found that old runners maintain their fuel economy,” he said.

Conference welcomes paws AWARD-WINNING research by a University of the Sunshine Coast Occupational Therapy (OT) Honours student has confirmed what many senior pet owners already believe - owning pets is good for them. Jordana Parkes-Moller’s research into the health-related benefits of pet ownership for older Australians won the prize for best student research paper at the recent Occupational Therapy Australia Queensland state conference in Noosa. “It was fantastic just to attend the conference and hear about all the amazing OT research by others” Jordana said. “But to actually present my own research and have so many people there really interested in it and giving me great feedback was awesome.” Jordana, 21, who has just completed her fourth year of study at USC, said a growing number of older adults were living alone and were at risk of social isolation and lowered quality of life. “I based my research on clients of Pets for Life, a great volunteer community organisation in Caloundra that helps seniors take care of their pets at home,” she said. “My study found that there are social, physical and mental health benefits to continued pet ownership and confirms the importance of organisations like Pets for Life, which make it possible for older people to keep their pets. “Pets can facilitate social interaction. If they go for a walk or sit in the front yard, people might talk to the pet
Beverley Mash of Moffat Beach with her cat, Winnie. and the senior owner. In my study, the pet owners also got to speak with the Pets for Life volunteers. “Pets can motivate their owners - whether it is to go for a walk or to simply get out of bed in the morning to feed the pet.
“They also decrease loneliness by providing companionship and feelings of safety, and act as someone for the owner to nurture.” Jordana’s Honours thesis research was supervised by USC OT Lecturer Anita Hamilton.

Food revolution at its source THE Source Bulk Foods has come onto the market just as it was most needed with more people craving a more authentic lifestyle and wanting to get back to basics. Families are finding the time to cook again and become more interested and educated about where their food is coming from and the ripple effects it has. Time has never been more imminent with the emergence of cooking shows, the explosion of food bloggers and ‘foodie’ social media accounts, as well as a strong pull to get healthy. The health revolution has begun and The Source is riding the wave. Each Australian produces more than two tonnes of rubbish every year. Shopping consciously at bulk food stores helps to reduce waste. The Source does not sell any packaged products and does not use plastic bags. Customers are encouraged to bring their jars and containers in for a refill. This is waste free shopping at its best. Paul Medeiros, founding director of The Source, said people are becoming more aware not only of what they eat but the effects their shopping choices have on the earth. “People want to provide good healthy meals for their families and they want to help reduce waste. Not only that, shopping in bulk is a cheaper way to shop as customers aren’t paying for packaging so it’s a win win, he said. The first Source Bulk Foods store opened in 2012 in Mullumbimby in northern NSW with great success. “The customers’ response was overwhelming, Paul said. “Demands started flooding in for Source stores all over Australia and The Source journey grew from there. “There are now nine Source stores around Australia including stores in Sydney, Melbourne, Queensland and online with many more stores in the pipeline.

New-look NAB options galore THE Noosa National Australia Bank (NAB) branch has a fresh new look designed to make banking even easier and to offer more banking options. The new-look Noosa store is part of NAB’s nationwide investment of more than $155 million over three years to, refurbish, open and relocate more stores in its 750 store network. NAB store manager Dawn Heyworth said NAB Noosa was dedicated to providing the community with innovative banking facilities. “This upgrade is designed to give Noosa residents more convenient banking options to suit their changing needs,” she said. “Our re-configured store layout allows us to better align our business to the changing landscape and changing needs of our customers in a digitised world.” The store’s upgrade includes new smart ATMs that allow customers to make deposits to their accounts with or without their NAB card, deposit funds that will be immediately credited to their account, and make deposit payments with reference numbers linked. NAB Retail Queensland general manager Dion Crowe said NAB was committed to delivering better banking that truly benefited their customers, business and the industry. The new-look Noosa store also includes a fresh, open-plan layout to accommodate both business and retail customers. NAB Business was previously located across the car park from the retail store, but is now fully integrated with the retail team.
Business Banking executive Melissa Hepworth said the NAB Business Banking team was proud to be part of the local Noosa community and was excited to be working more closely with their retail colleagues to support business clients. Small busi-
ness is the heart of the Australian economy and with NAB’s pledge to lend $1billion per month to help Australian companies to grow, the Noosa team is looking forward to helping more of its customers to realise their dreams.

And not forgetting the four-legged family members, there will also be pet treats for sale from Bark and Bakery. Noosaville State School P&C president Faye Hartley-Youens said the idea was to create a community event that can become part of the festive season calendar in Noosa. “Most of our local schools have a spring fair and we didn’t want to compete with what is done so well,” she said. “We do however, believe that we have something quite unique and something for everyone at our Christmas fair. In the spirit of the school’s motto - being the best we can be, everyone is looking forward to ending the year on a happy, festive note.”

In good spirits By JOLENE OGLE THREE locals were honoured and praised for their community spirit at the recent Noosa Heads Daybreak Rotary breakfast at Noosa Springs, last Thursday. Daybreak Rotary member Anne Oxley was presented with a certificate as a Paul Harris Fellow in recognition of her donation of more than $3000 to Rotary during her time with the service club. In a warming speech, Daybreak Rotary president Gill Timpany praised Ms Oxley’s fund-raising efforts and commitment to the club’s ethos of caring for those less fortunate. Ms Oxley joins over one million people recognised as a Paul Harris Fellow. Sunshine Beach Surf Club volunteer and high school student Edward Tilleard was also honoured by the organisation when he was sponsored to attend the National Youth Science Forum in Canberra next year. The Matthew Flinders student said he enjoyed studying science and was looking forward to the week-long forum where he will meet research scientists and other like-minded students. Finally, in a bid to recognise and reward those who go above the call of duty in their workplace, Daybreak Rotary presented Noosa Reef Hotel assistant venue manager Katie Stokell with the Pride in Workmanship award. The award was presented by past president Ian McDonald who said Ms Stokell had showed dedication and pride in her role at the venue since her employment in 2008. “You are an asset to the Noosa Reef Hotel,” he said. “You are also very appreciated by your employer.” The Noosa Heads Daybreak Rotary club is part of the international Rotary movement and raises funds to donate to local organisations and initiatives.
Traffic blitz
LOCAL police have already began their blitz on holiday drivers, with even more police expected on the roads this festive season. Noosa Heads Acting Senior Sergeant Tom Dawson said the traffic blitz started in Kawana last weekend and will continue throughout the coast including Noosa over the holiday season. Sen Sgt Dawson said the police will be targeting the fatal five - distraction and inattention, drink and drug driving, fatigue, speeding and not wearing a seat belt. With 211 fatalities on Queensland roads this year already, the traffic blitz will aim to reduce the road toll over the Christmas and New Year period.
SPORTTODAY
Team wins by night Friendly rivalry with Bob Schofield taking on Alan Shaw in the ‘Final’ on Thursday at 1pm. It is certain to be entertaining after the worthy semis where Rick Dickson and Daryl Birt were eliminated. RSL ‘Final’ was won by Team Clamp Bruce Roder, Greg Halloway (sub for Kevin Coghlan) Alan Clamp and Gary Moss by defeating Team Cook of Tony Howard, David Hawkesford (sub for Mike Lowe) Bob Mulvogue and Ken Jaekel (21/16) in a tight contest after being 14 all after 15 ends. The Christmas luncheon is on Tuesday 16 December at noon. - Green Master Noosa Heads Bowls THE 2014 club champions in the various games will be honoured and presented with trophies, at the annual awards and Christmas party on Saturday next. The presentation starts at 6pm with the dinner to follow at 7pm. Popular poms Richard and Sylvia (Sly) Foulds were farewelled after Saturday‘s triples matches as they are about to leave our shores to take up residence in the Costa del Sol, Spain. They have been great club people during their three-year stay in Noosa and we wish them well.
With three teams in second position, the outcome depended on the final scores on the night. Winners were JeLS which had a close battle with Eumundi Boys going neck-and-neck down to the last end and finishing with a draw. Bushrangers had a convincing win over Night Owls leaving them as second place overall. Eumundi Boys and 101s ended up equal third. The next season commences in the first week of February. Business Bowls has extended its season by one week due to the storm a few weeks ago. A High Roller/Business Bowls Challenge is set for Wednesday 10 December at 6.30pm. This annual event is very exciting and full of fun as is each battle in a friendly playoff. Tuesday Jackpot Pairs continue for a few weeks until the green close for renovations. Roger Linklater, Julie Ainscough and Sam Hands were last week’s winners. Bettina Winkler and Kerry Knowles were runners up. Sam Hands also won the Noosa Lifestyle Consistency prize with a score of 17. The jackpot is still climbing so it will be worth winning. - Julie Ainscough
Big bites and some balmy weather By JACK MANGROVE FISHING in Noosa this week has been nothing short of exceptional, with both offshore and the Noosa River fishing extremely well. Offshore, spotted mackerel have been in good numbers, with some anglers getting some larger sized fish. Slow trolled baits with squid skirts have been most effective. There’s also been some nice Spanish mackerel mixed in and with bait schools around Jew Shoal and Chardon’s Reef. Small slugs and soft plastics matching the size of the bait - can also tempt mackerel and tuna. On the bottom, North Reef has produced some nice pearl perch as well as sweetlip and the odd jew. There is a lot of talk of bill fish around at the moment, with some good sized marlin further north off
Frazer and Double Island. On the beaches and around the headlands there has been some nice jew and flathead caught, as well as the odd tailor. The bigger jewies tend to inhabit gutters and are more prevalent at night or very early morning. Big baits like mullet fillets and good squid are perfect baits. Those who do venture down to the rocks are reminded to be careful and to always have an escape plan. In the river, mangrove jack are becoming increasingly active, with good sized jacks taking prawn style soft plastics around steep drop-offs and jetties like the ones located in the back of Noosa Sound. Whiting are another plentiful species with the waters of the river mouth and the Gympie Terrace providing good sized tasty fish. Elsewhere in the river trevally

Noosa Table Tennis Club 2014 Summer Singles and doubles championships With the qualifying rounds now complete the club now has its top six in each grade finalised for the singles showdown. The doubles champs can now be announced and it is not surprising that after a very close season the winners were not high in predictions pre-tournament. A Grade: 1. Kye McDonald (undefeated), 2. Roger Gore, 3. Bill Brown, 4. Heinz Schwartz, 5. Jordan Brown, 6. Bruce Blakemore. Kye is odds on but there have been some close ones recently and we should witness some of the highest quality table tennis on finals night. Doubles winner Jordan Brown. B Grade: 1. Steve Gardner, 2. John Murphy, 3. Col Barry, 4. Oscar Estraviz, 5. Eli Kalugin, 6. Bernhard Trauer. Steve has had a blinder this season but watch out for fast improving Col and Oscar. Jonas Campbell, unfortunately, missed out by the smallest of margins and also a surprise omission is Martyn Clarke. They have both been serious contenders in past years. Doubles winner: John Murphy. C Grade: 1. Lucas Gore, 2. Brad Muller, 3. Matthew Duncan, 4. Sunny Lidden, 5. Richard Byrne, 6. Wendy Byrne. Can’t pick this one but Brad in full flight is very difficult but both young guns Lucas and Sunny will be in the thick of it. It is a shame that qualifier Jed Mikkelson will miss the finals as his game has developed quickly of late. Doubles winner: Richard Byrne. The club is moving to the Leisure Centre, Wallace Estate, next year after 21 years at the Bicentennial Hall. It will continue to hold competition Wednesday nights and social play three afternoons a week. The practise session will now be on Sunday afternoons. Phone 5474 5526 for further information.
Fittingly, Sly was part of the winning team on Saturday, taking first prize with Roy and Betsy Cornish. Frequent podium performers Nick Gelavis and Chris Robinson took the pairs prize last Tuesday. The triples winners were Brian Emery, Walter Zemler and Rudy Boyer. Wednesday Ladies Day was won by Jeanette Emery, Faye Hewson and Beryl Nelson. Friday Open Jackpot Pairs went to Graham Foster and Lindsay Baker (visitors), with Jan and Bill Burkitt runners-up. Winners of the first round losers section were Allan Pearson and Daphne Reed. Our men turned out for some Super Challenge trial matches on Saturday, with the biggest winning margin scored by Shane Burke and Mal Lloyd. Noosa Heads played Tewantin in the Night Pennant last Thursday. Tewantin took the points 6-2, the team only winning the mixed pairs and fours. The club travels to Kawana for this week's round. - The Chalker Cooroy Bowls THE High Rollers Challenge came to a very exciting end last Thursday night.

Giants stride on our land THE Greater Western Sydney Giants AFL football team will return to Noosa for a pre-Christmas training camp as they step up their campaign for 2015. The entire football department of about 70 players and staff will travel to Noosa from 14-20 December and will be based at the Noosa Tigers AFL Club in Noosaville. Head coach Leon Cameron said Noosa was an excellent loca-
tion for their training camp. “It gives our players an opportunity to train hard in warm, tropical conditions and build on their fitness as they prepare for the 2015 season,” he said. “We really enjoyed our time there last year and felt it gave us an excellent fitness base as we prepared for the season. “I would like to thank the Noosa Tigers for the chance to again
use their facilities, as well as the Noosa Council and Tourism Noosa for welcoming us.” The Giants team will train hard, as well as spend valuable time together before the Christmas break. Tourism Noosa CEO Damien Massingham said the Giants’ visit was confirming Noosa as a destination for elite athletes. “We are delighted to once again welcome the Giants to Noosa,” Mr
Massingham said. “Noosa is fast becoming known as a great training destination for elite athletes and the Giants training camp is a great opportunity to showcase the diversity of great facilities on offer in Noosa for sporting groups.” Everyone is welcome to attend the Giants training session at Noosa Main Beach on 17 December, from 10am.
Flash footy kids wield the willow By JONATHON HOWARD A GROUP of students from St Thomas More Primary School, who normally play AFL, have tried their hand at cricket with sterling results. Having no real experience with cricket, the girls played in the MILO T20 Blast Schools Cup alongside St Paul’s from Bald Hills who won the boys' section and St Thomas More Primary School, from Sunshine Beach, took out the girls’ comp in the finals at Allan Border Field. The national competition is aimed at encouraging maximum participation and fun for primary school boys and girls in Years 4-7. Thousands of Queensland school children took part in the modified cricket competition that took place in term four, with strong support from School Sport Queensland. The state finalists featured boys' teams from Boonah State School, Toowoomba East SS, Annandale State School, Frenchville State School, Peace Lutheran College, St Paul’s School, The Southport School and Banksia Beach SS. By DONNA FREY WELL what a busy few weeks for the Noosa Nippers. Congratulations to all who represented the club so proudly at Maroochydore last Sunday at the 11s - 13s Teams Carnival. A very special mention must go to the March Past team which after only one formal training session under the watchful eye of march past coach Ross Fisher finished a creditable seventh. This is the first team in a number of years and the entire team had a great time. Last Saturday night was the monthly open air movies held by Noosa Nippers at Peregian Beach. These free nights are a fun family way to enjoy a night out. This Friday saw our Noosa Nippers help Santa, his helpers and elves with the turning on of the Christmas lights at hastings Street. Today as our Nippers ran at Main beach and at Peregian, a small but strong team headed down to North Burleigh for some more match racing experience at the annual Young Guns Carnival. The team had some very creditable results with Kane Hart winning gold in the Under 14’s Ironman. Next Saturday will see Noosa host the Sunshine Coast Youth Challange for the 14’s and 15’s as well as
the Brisbane Lions will be doing some preseason training. Then on Sunday will be the first round of Club Championships. The following Friday 12 December will be the Annual Wall to Wall swim which is a fundraiser for Ronald McDonald House and will be the break-up for Christmas. I have it on very good authority that Santa will be taking time out from his very busy schedule to make a special appearance.

Merged clubs forge ahead Between the

By RON LANE HAPPY to relate the amalgamation between Noosa Heads and Peregian Beach is going well. On Sunday morning from 8am-10am, a group of 20 senior Nippers from Noosa and 12 from Peregian joined together to take part in an introduction course in CPR. Among the senior instructors from Noosa was Greg McLaughlin, Andrew Grzegozewski and Peter Landbridge. Regarding the session Grzegozewski said, “All went well. After the CPR training, the whole group went to the beach where they took part in surf swimming and board paddling. It was a very productive morning with both groups mixing well.” Noosa was not the only club to put their hand up on Sunday. On the beach, the afternoon patrol was manned by 11 members of the Mudjimba surf club. To give some idea as to the whole-hearted support that clubs are giving Peregian one of the Mudjimba patrol members was their club president Michael Hughes. “We are only too glad to help. If a club is going through a hard time, we all share the burden, we do what we can to help. That is what being a lifesaver is all about,” Hughes said. Michael Hughes is another great example of what the structure of the modern surf lifesaving clubs are all about; because for Michael like hundreds of lifesavers throughout the country, it is also a family affair. His three daughters are now also members, one having passed her bronze medallion another has qualified for her SRC and the third is now a under 12 Nipper. On the work front, Brett Leckie senior representative of the Peregian Club has taken a chair on the Noosa Management Committee. Good to see and we wish him well. Working bees have also been very busy. Greg McLaughlin and a team have worked towards upgrading training room facilities and the First Aid Room has been replaced with a brand new relocatable building at the northern end of the clubhouse. This will be fully fitted out and serviced as the First Aid Room. A new key fob security system will also be implemented. This system will be similar to the system now in use at Noosa, and if used properly will increase security protection for all aspects of the Peregian Surf club.

Vale Keith King. The annual Ten Grand in the Hand Fundraiser for the Sunshine Beach Club was a big success and club captain Scott Summers extends his thanks to all involved. Today at noon, Life Members and club members of the Noosa Heads S.L.S.C will gather at Drysdales Funeral Parlour to bid farewell to a fellow Life Member Keith King who died after a long illness. Keith, who started his career by obtaining his bronze medallion in the surf club at Alexander Headlands, joined the Noosa club in the early 1950s. He then went on to make his mark as a boat sweep. After a break from lifesaving, Keith returned to Noosa in the mid-1960s and resumed his career as a boat sweep, training both senior and junior crews. In 1970 and again in 1972 he was awarded the Lobin Cup as Life Saver of the year; and from 1970 to ’75 he held the office of club president. Also during his presidential years, he was instrumental, along with club mate Lloyd Pomeroy in assisting a group of supporters in their drive to raise funds for a new surf boat. The boat which was purchased and christened, Thank You Supporters, was launched in1972. During his term as president, Keith was awarded Life Membership for his outstanding contribution to the club. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.
Nippers unite for Met Caloundra carnival By NATASHA FABULIC TEAM spirit was alive and well last Sunday when Nippers from across the coast converged on Caloundra beach for the Met Caloundra U11-U13 Junior Teams Carnival. This is a day when individual pursuits are put aside and it becomes all about the team and putting in for your mates. It is a great opportunity for children who don’t always make finals or place in individual events to experience the thrill of a final and the excitement of a placing. There were plenty of events to keep all participants and support staff busy all day. And just to make sure no team missed out, some younger Nippers helped out and competed up an age group to ensure Sunshine had a team in every event. Teams of six compete in the All Age Beach Relay and teams of four compete in the age group beach relays. Competitors race on a 70metre soft sand course with speed and good baton changes the winning factors. Teams of four compete in the Cameron Relay which consists of a swim, a run, a nipper board paddle then a final run. Just the odd ripple of a wave made it a great day for water safety, however the flat conditions meant water event competitors had to work hard to break free from the pack.
Complaints to coach Max about the difficulty getting around the cans in a pack were met with the standard reply “if you’re in front, none of that happens”. The exit from the water and run to the next competitor or finish were also critical to achieve a placing. Teams of three compete in the Surf Board Relay, teams of two compete in the Surf Board Rescue - a swimmer and a board paddler that comes to the rescue - and teams of four compete in the Surf Swim. The march past consists of teams of 12 equipped with a surf life saving reel, line and belt, a team flag and pole. The team is judged on their team uniforms and marching skills. The Sunshine Nippers’ solid efforts led to many finals appearances and top six placings. Sunshine gained top three places in the following events: March past team 3rd (held during a break in activities due to the shark alarm clearing the water) U13 Female Cameron 2nd U13 Female Board Relay 3rd U13 Female Board Rescue 2nd U13 Male Board Rescue 3rd U12 Male Board Rescue 3rd U12 Female Surf team 3rd
