SOMETIMES all you need is the land you stand on, two shipping containers, and a clever design to create your dream home. Gabriela Calvo and Marco Peralta dreamt of living on their property outside of San Jose, Costa Rica, where they could be with their horses and enjoy the natural landscape, while being only 20 minutes from the city. Gabriela and Marco worked with architect Benjamin Garcia Saxe, who was given the challenge of designing a comfortable and practical home with two shipping containers and a budget of $40,000. “They made the very bold decision of exploring with me, the possibility of creating a very inexpensive house out of discarded shipping containers that allowed them to be debt-free and live the life they always wished for,” Benjamin said. “I strongly believe that they are an example of how, when we focus on the really important things that make us happy, creativity can then be used to try and search for that beauty, keeping within a very low budget.

“It was important for me to provide them with the sunrise, the sunset, the spectacular views, and overall try and create a feeling of comfort and home.” The 1000 square foot container home was built using two 40-foot shipping containers set together with a raised mid-section, and no metal was wasted. “A roof between the two containers, made from the scrap pieces of metal taken to make the windows, not only creates an internal sensation of openness but also provides a cross ventilation, which is surprisingly sufficient enough to never have to turn the air-conditioning on,” Benjamin said. Benjamin designed Gabriela and Marco’s dream home, before the couple went on to construct the home themselves. The home features two bedrooms, one bathroom, a kitchen and living space as well as a front and rear porch.

So - what do renters want? RECENT data released by real estate analyst Michael Matusik suggests most tenants are happy to pay a premium for benefits when renting. According to Matusik, who regularly surveys both the buying and renting markets, the latest data shows tenants across the south-east Queensland region would pay a premium for perks such as a dedicated study area with free Wi-Fi and high-speed internet.
