lived and grew up. Charles joined the Royal Irish Rifles as a bandsman and served in France during World War I. He was invalided out of the army after losing a finger in battle. In 1917 he and Ivy had a daughter, Susan Ivy, Doug’s mother. After the war Charles resumed civilian life working as a

Doug was 20 when Charles died in 1967 aged 75. “I am just amazed the photograph still exists. “Just stop and think what a miserable life it must have been in the trenches and it must have been in my grandfather’s pocket in those trenches for a good two years.

“It then went to my grandmother and my mother, who both looked after it.“ He has no idea who Miss C. Kelly was but has done some amateur sleuthing in an effort to discover the identity of the solider in the picture. “I would love to find the descendants of the German solider. I have even written to the German Embassy but there were hundreds of men in that regiment. “It could have been any one of them.” He is not certain where his grandfather was fighting in the lead-up to Christmas Day 1914, but has narrowed down the likely location to either Fromelles or the Rue des Bois Blanc. “The Christmas Day truce was remarkable. It was quite unofficial. The British high command were absolutely ropeable. “There are reports of the soldiers playing soccer together, then the next day it was back on.“ On Christmas Day, Doug will arrange the photograph next to an old photograph of Charles and Ivy. As his family gathers to share Christmas lunch they will pause to remember not only Charles but also the German soldier whose earnest stare is frozen in black and white. “One hundred years on, I can’t just let it go, it’s too important. After 100 years they both deserve some sort of commemoration.”

CHRISTMAS Eve 1914, the Western Front, France: the bullets and bombs that had turned the French countryside into a muddy, bloody hell fall silent and the gentle sound of Christmas carols waft between the Allied and German trenches. New arrivals on the German lines bring with them Christmas trees which are hoisted onto the parapets of the trenches. At first light on Christmas morning, German soldiers hesitantly begin to emerge from their positions and, calling out “Merry Christmas“ in English, approach the Allied trenches. Among the Allied soldiers who clamoured out of the safety of his trench to wish ‘Fritz’ a merry Christmas and exchange simple presents of cigarettes and plum puddings was Irishman Charles Sylvester. Some time during that extraordinary Christmas Day, a German soldier approached Charles and pressed into his hand a photograph of himself dressed in the uniform of the 158th Regiment of the Imperial German Army. One hundred years later that photograph, only slightly tattered and creased around the edges, will take pride of place at the Christmas celebrations at the Springvale home of Charles’s grandson Doug Glew. On the back of the photograph, the black lead pencil barely legible, Charles wrote “This was given to me by a private of the 158th Regiment, German Army on the 25th of December 1914. In the event

‘Treated like a dog’
Thanks to all for a great year
By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS
THIS is the final edition of the Journal for 2014. It has been a year tinged with sadness with the passing of legendary Journal reporter Marg Stork who died in May aged 92. Marg diligently wrote about Dandenong for more than 70 years and contributed to her column, A Moment with Marg, right up until her death. Among the stand-out issues this year was the growing scourge of the drug ice, the Give Us a Hand campaign calling for more resources to help asylum seekers, and the White Ribbon campaign against family violence. But no matter the story, we thank the individuals and organisations who generously shared their thoughts, feelings and experiences in the pages of the Journal throughout 2014. Next year the Journal celebrates its 150th anniversary. We look forward to marking this historic occasion by focusing not only on the past, but celebrating what a local newspaper can mean to readers of today. The first edition of 2015 will be published on 12 January. From all the staff at the Journal we wish you and your family a merry Christmas and a safe and happy new year. – Narelle Coulter, editor
THE widow of a man who died after being “treated like a dog“ while in police custody says she will never forgive the Dandenong officers involved. The coronial findings into Ling Gong Tang’s death in 2010, which were handed down last week, were critical of how officers dealt with his arrest. Mr Tang, who was suffering from advanced chronic liver disease, was found to have suffered hypothermia after being led from Dandenong police cells and left to lie in the rain on the cold night of 12 May 2010. The Coroner said Mr Tang was drunk, soiled, complaining of abdominal pain, bleeding and crawling in the police cells before being released. Without a fixed address, Mr Tang was left to lie drenched for 40 minutes after an ambulance was called three times.
He died the next morning in Dandenong Hospital. Of the five police officers, one has been sacked over the incident, another resigned and three were fined and subject to further training. In a family statement, Hai Truong - Tang’s wife - thanked interpreter and witness Yu Lipski for speaking out on her husband’s suffering. “I doubt that these horrible events would have surfaced without her courage.” Ms Truong said the family had suffered not only because of Mr Tang’s death but the “inhumane way” he was treated. “It was devastating to have the world see my husband crawl out of a cell without a hand to help. To be treated like a dog. “My daughter and I miss him terribly and I shall never forgive those police officers for the way my husband was treated.”
In his findings, deputy state coroner Iain West stated that CCTV footage of Mr Tang crawling out of his cell without assistance was “confounding and deeply distressing to witness”. It took eight minutes for officers to escort Mr Tang out of the station. CCTV footage showed Tang “struggling to stand and walk”. “He is eventually pushed out into the cold night, in bare feet and in a shocking state, with blood escaping from his mouth,” Mr West stated. Mr West said it was unclear what extent hypothermia played in Mr Tang’s death or whether earlier medical attention could have saved him. He therefore found the death was “not a death in custody within the meaning of the Act”. “Despite there being no specific police guidelines regarding the management of detainees who were soiled, I am of the view that more competent, diligent and compas-
sionate police officers would have made arrangements to address Mr Tang’s soiled condition and preserve his welfare, dignity and hygiene.” After the findings, Acting Deputy Commissioner Jack Blayney said: “On any test, in terms of our duty of care for people in our custody, it fails.” “On the night in question, the members failed dismally in terms of their duty to Mr Tang. “Mr Tang was not afforded the dignity on that night that Victoria Police expects from all of its staff.” He said the possibility of criminal charges was considered but “our advice was in this case they don’t apply”. Victoria Police has since reviewed how it handles people in police care. Among the changes were clear guidelines on maintaining prisoners’ dignity, comfort and hygiene, and to check and rouse drunken detainees every 30 minutes.

Colleen Pearce, the state’s Public Advocate, said the award was given to police that “consistently support
the rights of people with a disability” over the past three years. “People with a disability are no more likely to commit crimes but they are more likely to be arrested, convicted and serve prison sentences,” she told the gathering. Last year, ITPs attended 2600 police interviews in Victoria and most callouts in the metro area were

IN THE light of the Tang coronial findings, Dandenong Police Station received a “timely” award for its supportive treatment of detainees. Last week, the award was presented by the Office of the Public Advocate - an organisation that protects the rights of people with disabilities. The award came on the recommendation of the office’s Independent Third Person volunteers, who are called in by police to assist and support witnesses, victims and detainees. They help interviewees - who are judged not to have the capacity to represent their own interests - to understand their rights and safety and to ensure clear communication with police. In a presentation at the station last week, Assistant Commissioner Luke Cornelius referred to last week’s coronial findings into the death of Ling Tang who suffered damning treatment at the station in 2010. He said he was “highly critical” of the police’s conduct at the time but a lot of work had been done since to “change our approach”. Mr Cornelius said the award showed the station was “hitting the mark”. “Sometimes the behaviour of those individuals can be challenging. Sometimes they can’t manage their own affairs. “The key thing is we make sure

Depression spirits always high at our place JACK JOHNSON IS THE AUTHOR OF WHEN THE CLOCK STRIKES, A FASCINATING ACCOUNT OF GROWING UP IN DANDENONG, HIS YEARS TENDING TO THE CITY’S PIPES AND DRAINS AS A PLUMBER AND BRINGING UP A FAMILY WITH WIFE FRANCES IN THEIR BELOVED HOME IN MACPHERSON STREET. I WAS about four years old when dad first became the Council Traffic Officer at the Dandenong Market. My brother Nipper and sister Jinnie were both at school so on Tuesdays it was my job to go from our home at 88 McCrae Street down to the market with dad’s lunch. It was no easy task for a four-yearold to carry a billycan of hot tea and a basket with sandwhiches and enamel mugs. I would sit with dad on a rough red gum seat near the council storage yard, just near the large open brick drain. Farmers, stall holders and stockmen from the two markets would come by to talk to dad and they would pat me on the head and say: “So this is one of the kids you are so proud of.” Three-quarters of a century later

while standing on almost the same spot attending an Anzac memorial service, I would have an extremely emotional and spiritual experience remembering my dad. We did not consider just this house at 88 McCrae Street as our place. We thought of the whole town and its miles of surrounding grasslands and bush as our place. We were in the middle of the greatest depression Australia and the world
Jack Johnson, right, with his dad Fred and younger brother Bill. had ever experienced and even through we lived in dire poverty, we were rich in spirit. There was nothing more exciting than spotting a new beer bottle hidden
in the long grass, its amber glass shining like a nugget of gold in the early morning sunlight. The thought that if you collected enough of them at a ha’penny each, even in Depression times, you could be a big spender at our favourite lolly shops like Mrs Driver’s in Foster Street opposite New Street, where we bought chewing gum which came with colourful football and cricket swap cards. They cost a ha’penny each. Nipper and I barracked for Carlton and dad liked South Melbourne. If money was burning a hole in our pocket we would strut around Gilpin’s Emporium, on the site of Melba House in the main street. It was a fairly new concept in retail shopping and one of the first shops to have an island glass display window at
its front. We knew if we spotted some new novelty or a game of snakes and ladders, ludo, drafts of Chinese checkers, we had a good chance of being able to afford them. Gilpin’s was the first shop where we could buy square white elastic for our gings (a child’s catapult) and shanghais. We got the ammunition for our slingshots when we went fishing in the old Centennial Brick Works clay pits lagoon. We would reach through holes in the wire mesh fence into the drums full of round steel pellets which had been punched out of the steel plate to fit the tynes or spikes of the harrows. We never managed to hit a rabbit with our gings at the Police Paddocks, but we did dent a lot of tin cans.

Alcohol plays a major part in the cases the Ambulance Service is called to,” Mr Hyatt said. He also said people should have a merry Christmas, but if they planned to drink they should get a taxi, designate a driver or drink moderately.

As part of my social responsibility I thought of supporting the group.” The group is the brainchild of retired horticulturalist Robin Bliss, the group elected a committee and is in the process of becoming a incorporated.

Shipments for the Second Expeditionary Force can be made up to December 15th; all work should therefore reach the depot no later
than December 12. It is most urgent that all gloves and mittens should be sent by Dec 12th in order to reach the front during the cold weather. Blankets, which are urgently needed by our men in the trenches, will be most acceptable and will be sent at once to the front.

Bike break-in BEN Reid says he faces bankruptcy after thieves stole two unique Aprilia superbikes from his BRP Racing Team workshop in Dandenong last Monday night. Mr Reid offered a $20,000 reward out of his own pocket “no questions asked” - for the return of the hand-built Italian RSV4s. Both were ridden and raced by Max Biaggi in 2009 - the year before he was crowned world superbike champion. They are valued at more than $150,000 - but worth much more than the money, Mr Reid said. He believes they’re the only privately-owned Aprilia factory
bikes in the world, “entrusted” to him because of a 20-year relationship with the factory. They were part of his nowscuttled plans to relaunch his European-based racing team back home. “The idea was to do something here, to live a normal life and not live out of a suitcase anymore.” The former professional 250cc rider has raced the bikes once “for fun” since buying them in May. They were being prepared for up-and-comer Glenn Scott to race as a wildcard at an international at Phillip Island in February. Each of the bikes’ parts is unique and impossible to source within Australia and so it is
easy to spot these aren’t “normal” bikes, Mr Reid said. For that reason, he fears the thieves intended to ship the bikes overseas. “It’s like stealing a Formula One car. You can’t take parts off and sell them anywhere in the world. You can’t buy parts for them. Mr Reid hadn’t realised utill two mornings later that a friend’s Ducati Monster 750 custom bike was also stolen in the heist. The burglars were “wellprepared” - obviously targeting the 170-kilogram bikes, Mr Reid said. “It would take two or three strong men to turn it around and lift it off (the workshop stand).”

Set for New York because her city is the apple of her eye By CASEY NEILL CAITLIN Hallett will spend 2015 in New York for the good of Dandenong. The 21-year-old from Dandenong North will be among only four interns to work with the Salvation Army’s International Social Justice Commission in New York, USA, for 12 months from 8 January. The unit works strongly with the United Nations and will immerse the former Carwatha College school captain in a project to improve women’s access to drug and alcohol addiction services. “The idea is whatever project I do over there I bring back to the Salvos over here and we roll it out over here,” she said. Caitlin recently gained Social Work and Health Science degrees at Monash University. “I hope to learn more about so-
cial justice issues on an international scale,” she said. “It’s easy when you study social work in an Australian context to just think about issues in terms of Australia. “I’m hoping that I can learn about things at a global level and bring back some of that knowledge. “I want to specialise as a mental health social worker.” Her long-term goal is to be a pastor or minister, ideally in Dandenong. She last month worked at the State Election polling booth at Lyndale Secondary College. “There were a couple of Sudanese people who came in and they were so excited because it was the first time they were able to vote,” she said. “That was just so exciting for me. That was when I realised how much

I’m going to miss where I live. “I get a lot of stigma for where I live, but I tell people with a purpose that that’s where I live because I’m proud of my community.” Caitlin has never lived away from her family or travelled on her own. “Thank goodness for Skype!” she said. “It’s a big deal for my grandparents. “All four of them at some stage either worked or volunteered with the Salvation Army.” Salvation Army Dandenong corps officer Captain Stuart McGifford encouraged Caitlin to apply. “It’s an honour to know Caitlin and to see her commitment to ensuring no one in our world is left behind,” he said. “This opportunity will provide her with a life-changing perspective on the world.”
Bus driver’s forgiveness BUS driver Faavae Tuiloma has already forgiven two women who allegedly punched, bit and spat on him as they disembarked at Dandenong Railway Station. The 44-year-old man of God and father of five is nervously awaiting blood test results following the incident on Saturday 29 November. He was behind the wheel of a bus travelling the 893 route from Cranbourne Shopping Centre to the station,
and picked up the women at Dandenong Plaza Shopping Centre about 2.50pm. They allegedly failed to use their myki cards when they boarded and Mr Tuiloma asked them to pay the fare when the bus reached its destination. The alleged assault then occurred. “When I went home that day my wife was so shocked when she saw me,” he said. “I have five kids, four boys and
my daughter. My daughter was just freaked out. “I know I was injured but in my heart I’m glad I let them go. “If they were men, it’s a different story, defending myself. “To me as a Christian - I’m serving in my church as a bishop for five years, now I’m still serving in high calling in my church - I still have to forgive them.” Mr Tuiloma said all buses should

A new leaf Work is slowing down and your eyes are on the holidays. That’s a good time to engage in some planning for 2015: the things you’d change, the things you’d do the same but better, and the new elements you need in your life. Here are a few ideas: • Goal: try focusing on where you want to get to during 2015, commit it to paper, and then build a plan around it. Be clear on your goals. • Budget: when you spend less than you earn, you have choices in daily finances and longerterm wealth creation. Write a budget for 2015, and stick to it. • Debt plan: a mortgage is cheap debt, and it buys a capital asset; credit cards are expensive and don’t generally buy assets. So in 2015, plan to optimise your mortgage and minimise credit card debt. • Mortgage: use this competitive market to save money. The monthly difference between a 25-year, $500,000 standard variable loan at 4.7 per cent, and the same loan at 5.7 per cent, is $294 each month, or around $3500 annually. Investigate refinancing and talk with a mortgage broker about the options. • Credit cards: 18 per cent is not a good interest rate for a large balance. If you have more than one card, attack the lowest-balance one and close it down, and then start on the others. If you have one card, have a weekly plan to pay it down, and reduce the limit. If you have a mortgage, consider refinancing and consolidating your cards into the mortgage. • Saving: saving towards a house deposit, Christmas or a holiday is a powerful tool and one that promotes confidence and self sufficiency.
The best savings plans occur in a separate highinterest account, with regular deposits, towards a definite goal. • Super: make a commitment to get your super sorted in 2015. People let it slide because they find it complex, but it’s really just about setting a goal and ensuring that contributions and investment options support the goal. If in doubt, make 2015 the year of the financial adviser. • Investments: working hard and the money going nowhere? In 2015, start investing. You could start with a small parcel of blue chip shares, or investigate what it takes to have an investment property. All good investments start with a plan… or a financial adviser. • Protection: plan to be properly insured in 2015, and not just for your house and car. Life insurance, income protection and some trauma cover might also be appropriate. Some can be sourced through your super fund, but an insurance broker can help get you the right cover at the right price. • You: your mental and physical wellbeing is the foundation of your life, so whether it’s finding a new job, improving a relationship, changing your diet, reducing your drinking, joining a gym or giving up smoking, make a plan for it.

He wants to go home in one piece like all of us,” he said. “He definitely showed a lot of restraint. It’s hard to say what anyone else would have done.” Police urged anyone with informa-

Mums fear DHS rules By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A DANDENONG barrister says newlyarrived mothers are reluctant to report family violence because they fear their children will be taken from them. Roona Nida is trying to help several mothers reunite with their children who have been farmed out to foster parents by a “scary and unethical” Department of Human Services. She recently won back a south-east Melbourne mother’s young children in a prolonged children’s court battle against the department - which originally intervened after the husband allegedly inflicted family violence.
Since early this year, the children had been placed with separate foster families from incompatible cultural backgrounds and their mother was initially only able to see her children for hour stints in a DHS office. The department argued for indefinite foster care under a custody-to-secretary order, but the court found it was in the children’s “best interest” to be reunited with their mother. Ms Nida said it was notoriously rare to defeat the DHS’s recommendations in court, claiming the department tried to suppress favourable reports of her client’s parenting fitness. She said if not for her pro bono inter-
vention, the mother had “no hope”. “It’s scary and unethical. (The DHS) don’t appear to care,” Ms Roona said. “They should have been more flexible. I think it was easier for them to seek a custody-to-secretary order.” She said such cases had a chilling effect on refugee and asylum-seeker communities whose members perceive that the mother had been unjustly punished for reporting family violence. DHS spokesman Mike Griffin said the department was forbidden from commenting on the children’s court case. “Children are removed as a last resort and only when a court determines the child is at significant risk and the parents
cannot protect the child from harm. “Only a fraction of the 80,000 notifications made each year lead to court action, and only a small percentage of those lead to removal of children,” Mr Griffin said. He said that in family violence matters, emphasis was given to removing the perpetrator of violence and not the children. “When children are removed, re-unification is always the goal where possible and most children who enter care are returned to their parent’s care within six months.” Agencies such as Child First and Cradle to Kinder helped parents manage any issues they faced so that they could be reunited with their children, he said.
Lights shine from street welcome DANDENONG North Uniting Church is doing its bit to light up Greater Dandenong in the aptlynamed Holly Avenue. Multi-coloured bulbs are strung across the building and garden and glowing Santas, reindeer and penguins illuminate the night. Across the road, 16 Holly Avenue is also contributing to the festive cheer. Blue lights drip from the gutters and several Santas, a sleigh filled with presents and Christmas trees fashioned from lights all feature. Are you lighting up Greater Dandenong? Post your photos to www. facebook.com/DandenongJournal.
IN BRIEF Millionaire in waiting A DANDENONG man was a multi-millionaire for a week without knowing it. The TattsLotto winner, who wants to remain anonymous, carried the 29 November draw division one-winning ticket in his wallet for a week, unaware it had secured him more than $2.1 million. “My wife and I have had a rough couple of years so this is going to change our world," he said. “I actually had a smashing week last week and thought to myself that finally things were starting to go our way and then I found out we won TattsLotto! “This TattsLotto windfall means we can look after our whole family and take a welldeserved holiday.” The winner bought the 36-game QuickPick entry at Dandenong Plaza Lotto.

SPRINGVALE Senior Sergeant Alan Dew took to the mighty Murray last month to build relations with Indigenous youths. He took part in the five-day Massive Murray Paddle alongside young people from Dandenong and District Aborigines CoOperative. “I think that the kids and the police and the Aboriginal Elders started off slow, but by the end of the week they really bonded together”, he said. The police were more humanised to the kids and the police probably had a better understanding of some of the situations that the kids come from.

COUNCILLOR Maria Sampey dropped a metaphoric bombshell at last week’s City of Greater Dandenong council meeting, revealing why the civic centre’s underground car park was closed to the public in recent weeks. She asked why the area had been assessed as a “security risk” and “are terrorists going to bomb the building?”. CEO John Bennie said there were “increasing concerns” about the security of pub-
A LATE pitch for free parking at the underutilised Number 8 multi-deck car park in Springvale was sunk at last week’s council meeting. Councillor Youhorn Chea said waiving parking fees for 22 to 24 December would attract people to try the perennially half-empty Balmoral Street car park - or half-full if you’re more optimistic. Despite enthusiastic support from some colleagues, opponents roundly berated Cr Chea for the late notice. The door was left open, however, for such a promotion in the new year. SPRINGVALE’S Snow Fest 2013 was named a National Finalist and State Winner in the Best New Event category at the Australian Event Awards in Sydney on 11 November. The inaugural event was among four finalists in the category for its fun nature, innovative activities and the appropriateness of ‘snow play’ for a family audience in an Asian retail precinct. It also acknowledged the event’s excellent attendance and its highly-organised delivery. WHEN the name goes with the job... The Journal team couldn’t help but giggle at the name of First Constable Travis Cute, perhaps not the very best moniker for your average tough-as-nails copper. Female staffers say it’s cute by name, cute by nature. WEDDING bells will be ringing for Marg Nicholls this month. The Journal sends its congratulations to the former commissioner, who helped merge the Dandenong and Springvale shires to create Greater Dandenong. She was widowed 27 years ago and has finally found love again - with her first boyfriend.

CHRISTIAN ministers have lambasted Greater Dandenong’s $185,000 splash on Christmas decorations for not being sufficiently Christian. Dandenong Ministers Fellowship spokesman David Owen, who last year decried the paucity of council Christmas decorations, said the extra $100,000 spending this year was misdirected. The most extravagant decoration, a towering lit-up Santa aboard a reindeer in Dandenong’s Civic Square, had links to Coca-Cola but “nothing to do with the Christian Christmas”. He said the nearby Nativity scene - which includes a narrative on the birth of Jesus Christ - contained inaccuracies and
omissions. “It didn’t mention the village of birth, they had the wise men at the crib (scriptures state they visited Jesus as a two-yearold) and didn’t mention Mary was a virgin - which is crucial for Christians. “I don’t know who authored it but we wouldn’t put it that way at all. We weren’t consulted at all.” Mr Owen said outside of the Civic Square, there was a lack of Christmas feel on the streets. The exceptions were street poles decorated by gift boxes and holly in Palm Plaza, and a Santa astride the former Bendigo Bank building in Lonsdale Street - but they were secular Christmas symbols, Mr Owen said. “Driving around Greater
Dandenong, I wouldn’t say an extra $100,000 has been spent to accommodate the Christian community. “I’d say there’s generally less decorations than last year.” He called for the fellowship to be consulted on future festive decorations and Carols by Candlelight events. In reaction to the giant Santa and reindeer, fellowship member and Cornerstone minister Don Cameron said: “Sometimes artwork can hinder the real message rather than enhance it.” Other council-organised Christmas events include movies on the civic square ‘big screen’, street entertainment in Dandenong, Noble Park and Springvale, and a shop decoration competition.

United in pride for reform By CASEY NEILL IT’S 20 years to the day since Marg Nicholls helped to bring the cities of Dandenong and Springvale together. And the former commissioner couldn’t be prouder of City of Greater Dandenong’s progress, particularly Dandenong Market, Lonsdale Street and the new civic centre. “It’s like a mother – your child grows up and you think they’ve gone off and done their own thing,” she said. “You still have a pride. “I really loved my time at Dandenong. “I wish the people of Greater Dandenong all the best and I hope their future goes to bigger and better things. “They’re such a resilient people and I’m sure that they’ll get there. They need to not lose heart.” The Victorian Local Government Board instigated council amalgamations to make the system more efficient. “We originally had 210 municipalities in Victoria. The government was bringing it down to 72,” Ms Nicholls said. It was on 15 December 1994 that the former cities of Dandenong and Springvale and small parts of Berwick and Cranbourne were proclaimed the City of Greater Dandenong. Heatherton and Sandown were put forward as potential names, but Greater Dandenong won out because Dandenong was already recognised as a regional hub. “I was a councillor at the old City of Oakleigh and was the last mayor there,” Ms Nicholls said. “I was invited by the government to become a commissioner. I was naturally delighted.
The first City of Greater Dandenong council, back, Naim Melhem, John Kelly, Dale Wilson, Roz Blades, Paul Donovan, Phil Reed, Yvonne Herring, Youhorn Chea, front, Sharon Harris, Greg Harris and Angela Long. “Our role involved making the transition, combining the two municipalities. “Springvale and Dandenong had different staff structures. They had different departments. “It was a fantastic challenge. “We were so lucky in Greater Dandenong, the community were fantastic. “We had a lot of community consultation and they took part in it. “It was the most fabulous time of my life.” Alongside her were commissioners Ian Cathie and John Nixon and acting CEO Warwick Heine.

my heart dropped,” she said. “I felt a great sense of loss. And I was quite down in the dumps. “And then I, with a few other people in the community and former councillors, we set up a bit of a council watch group, which was useful. “Because there was a lot of new staff and we spoke directly to them about issues. “So someone rang me to say the speed humps in a particular street, we were thinking of taking them up, what do you think? “I wasn’t going to get in anyone’s way - we were just there to help.”
“We put two and a half years into getting the city into shape,” she said. “A lot of the groups had been promised things by the former councils. “You couldn’t put two A-grade facilities for hockey in the one municipality.” The first City of Greater Dandenong council was elected in 1997 and included many councillors from the former cities. Cr Roz Blades was a Springvale councillor at the time of amalgamation. “When I first heard we were going to be the City of Greater Dandenong,
Cr John Kelly was a Dandenong councillor when the merger took place. “Generally the whole idea was good,” he said. “I think we’ve come a long way, both ends of the town since then. “By having a combined city it’s cut costs that ratepayers would have had with separate cities. “There was passion in both ends of the town, and to some degree there’s still passion for the two ends of the town. “There’s not one thing wrong with that.”

GIVE US A HAND
Hope in hand By NARELLE COULTER, EDITOR THIS week marks the final instalment of the Journal’s Give Us a Hand campaign. As a voice of the community, we felt it important that the Journal throw its support behind the City of Greater Dandenong’s push to secure more Federal Government funding to support the increasing numbers of asylum seekers and refugees who call the city home. The campaign kicked off on 4 August with a front page letter to Prime Minister Tony Abbott. “The City of Greater Dandenong needs a helping hand,“ read the letter. “The Journal supports the City of Greater Dandenong’s campaign for more resources to support the newest and most disadvantaged members of our community.“ While the fight for more resources goes on, week after week Give Us a Hand unearthed inspiring stories of refugees and asylum seekers who were making contributions to their adopted communities. There have been personal stories of triumph over adversity such as the tale of Dit Chokeun who fled war-torn South Sudan to become a Salvation Army lieutenant helping the poor throughout Greater Dandenong and that of Kumar and his wife who in August shared
their story of life behind wire in an Australian detention camp. There have also been words of praise from employers such as Kees and Roelie Koomen who employ Sudanese asylumseekers Eisa and Muhummad at their Pakenham rose farm. “They appreciate having a job. They never complain about it. They’re happy to be here,“ Mr Koomen told the Journal. Then there were the stories of community organisations such as the Noble Park Fire Brigade which has made a con-
scious effort to reach out to new arrivals and in return reap new members to boost flagging volunteers numbers. Despite the formal campaign coming to an end, the Journal will continue telling the stories of asylum seekers and refugees and highlighting the incredible generosity of organisations and individuals throughout the city. We hope that in 2015 we can also report that local government and community organisations finally get the support they so desperately need.

COVER STORY
AN ADDRESS OF DISTINCTION PROVES POPULAR WITH PURCHASERS\ 805 BERWICK CRANBOURNE ROAD, CRANBOURNE NORTH
SET atop undulating green hills, with sweeping views across as far as the Dandenong Ranges, the south-east’s newest community, Tulliallan, was launched to the public on 6 December. Even amid the steady Melbourne drizzle, purchasers and locals flocked to the Cranbourne North site to discover the wide range of features and amenities the community has on offer. Located on the cusp of historic Berwick, at 805 Berwick Cranbourne Road, Tulliallan combines the serenity of tree-lined boulevards, heritage buildings and leafy green open spaces with a contemporary masterplanned community. The first release at Tulliallan, which features to total of 20 lots, has proven popular with eager purchasers who have been drawn in by the community’s idyllic setting and convenient location near some of the south-east’s best amenities. Positioned in the heart of the community, just by Tulliallan’s heritage listed Elm Tree Gardens, the release was more than 65 per cent sold in its first week. The property’s grand elm trees have been generously donated by Tulliallan’s former owner and will border the future Elm Tree Gardens community parkland, while the landscaping has been meticulously planned to complement the natural landscape. Featuring approximately 1000 home sites across the community, Tulliallan also provides a number of green open spaces for relaxation and leisure, as well as an onsite neighbourhood centre, sports oval and nature trail. With a focus on the natural environment, this forward-thinking development will include recycled water and fibre optic internet access to each home. With sales expected to continue at their current rate over the next couple of weeks, Tulliallan is set to become the South East’s premier address and is perfectly positioned for a life of prosperity and distinction. Tulliallan, 805 Berwick Cranbourne Road, Cranbourne North, 8786 7788.

NEW HOMES & LAND
BUYERS’ FIELD OF DREAMS The sun was shining as the first stage of Ramlegh Springs on Clyde hit the market recently with buyers lining up to claim their share of Clyde North’s best new address. “With land prices in such a fantastic development starting from just $123,000, and with front yard landscaping by the award winning Flemings Nurseries included in the land price, it was little wonder we had 13 home sites snapped up by lucky buyers on the day,” Ramlegh Springs Estate manager Trudi Kerr said of the Saturday sale. Despite overnight temperatures below 10 degrees leading up to the launch, first homebuyer Michael Burgoyne and his young family had their hearts set on a 544 square metre block located across the road from Ramlegh Park.
So he spent three cold nights camping outside the sales office to ensure they were first in line to claim their land when doors opened at 9am. “We’ve been looking to purchase our first family home for almost three years and in that time no other development in the area has managed to capture our imagination like Ramlegh Springs. “We’re absolutely thrilled to have finally purchased in such a fantastic new community and can’t wait to start building our dream home,” Michael said. The event was advertised to anyone who was in the Clyde North area by the custom-made Ramlegh Springs on Clyde promotional blimp. “Unlike most other developments in the area, Ramlegh Springs is located away
from the busy Clyde Road, tucked away on former farmland on an idyllic and peaceful patch of Clyde North countryside,” Trudi said. “This means we had to come up with an innovative way to guide homebuyers to our brand new sales office,” she said. The new Ramlegh Springs on Clyde sales office is located on Pattersons Road, Clyde North, and is open 10am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday. For more information on Ramelgh Springs visit www.ramleghsprings.com.au or contact Trudi Kerr from Oliver Hume on 9684 8144. GIVE US A HAND
Group effort for change By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A SIGNIFICANT slab of the state’s population will be represented in Greater Dandenong’s campaign for asylum seekers, says proponent Roz Blades. Last week Councillor Blades said 12 councils had indicated their backing for the joint statement which calls for more federal resources to clothe, feed
and shelter asylum seekers living in the community. Cr Blades said the signing-on of three peak bodies - the Refugee Council of Australia, Ethnic Communities Council of Victoria and Municipal Association of Victoria - would also bear significant weight. “They are representing a huge amount of people across all council areas,” Cr Blades said.
A delegation is expected to visit Canberra to deliver the statement to the Federal Government early next year. The push was motivated by charities, volunteers and welfare agencies becoming stretched by the growing numbers of community-based asylum seekers, many of whom were banned from working. “We don’t have anything to do with the politics of how and why (asylum
seekers) get here,” Cr Blades said. “They’re here and we have to look after them.” During the year the council launched an asylum-seeker and refugee communities action plan. The plan tackles issues such as social inclusion, housing access, employment and meaningful activity. As part of the plan, the council set up an advisory group of service pro-
viders, volunteers, councillors, council staff and members of asylum seeker and refugee communities. In August the City of Greater Dandenong held an inter-council forum to which it invited representatives of all Victorian municipalities. At the time Cr Blades said the forum had been the “most collaborative thing by different councils on one issue I’ve seen in 23 years“.
Spirits soar at sanctuary By CASEY NEILL BRAND New Day had a big day out in Healesville to celebrate its first birthday. Margo Hartley opened the care and empowerment centre last November to provide a legup for the Dandenong community’s most downtrodden. On 6 December she treated people who’d completed courses during the past 12 months and their families to a barbecue at Badger Weir and a Healesville Sanctuary visit. She said the 120-strong group travelled in a bus convoy for the “day of laughter, fun and enjoyment”. “This was the first time many of the people on the tour had experienced Australian wildlife,” she said. “They couldn’t wait to see
7

WELLSPRINGS for Women celebrated its 20th birthday with a tribute to its founder. The Dandenong organisation’s staff, participants and friends gathered on 10 December to mark the milestone. The event started with a tree planting in Halpin Way, named after Wellsprings founder Sister Ann Halpin, a Presentation Sister who died in 2009. She opened Wellsprings in 1994 as a drop-in centre for women to meet in a homely
environment. It’s now open five days a week, and 15 staff plus more than 40 volunteers work to help more than 600 women each month from 50plus different countries. A graduation ceremony in the Dandenong Civic Square followed the planting. City of Greater Dandenong Mayor Sean O’Reilly presented participation certificates to Wellsprings’ English and computer students, many refugees or asylum seekers. The square’s big screen played a video about Wellsprings during the ceremony.

Legal moves to save dog on death row
LEARN WITH THE BEST
BARRISTERS Animal Welfare Panel has intervened to try to save a homeless woman’s dog and close companion Laura from being sentenced to death before Christmas. A last-minute intervention by the panel on 5 December delayed a final decision by Greater Dandenong Council to kill the dog. Its owner Kim Reeves has now been given 14 days to convince the council she can adequately house her eight-year-old rottweiller Laura, and comply with dangerous dog regulations. Ms Reeves, 26, rejects Laura’s classification as a dangerous dog and allegations the dog killed a neighbour’s chickens. She said Laura had never bitten a person and was her closest companion through years of drifting between rentals, boarding houses and sleeping rough. The council argues that Ms Reeves is unable and unwilling to securely house the dog, which it considers a risk to public safety. In recent months, the nationwide panel has prevented seven dogs being euthanised, rehomed a declared ‘dangerous dog’ to an animal sanctuary and successfully challenged a restricted-breed dog declaration. National co-ordinator Meg Good said the panel intervened because “there is a risk to the animal’s life”. “The panel is able to arrange for pro bono legal representation in cases where the animal’s life is at risk.” She said she and panel director Mark Rinaldi were considering legal options to “save Laura from unnecessary destruction”. Greater Dandenong’s regulatory services manager Peter Shelton said the council was “engaged in a legal process” with the dog owner and made no further comment. - Cam Lucadou-Wells

THIEVES have stolen eight camper trailers in seven days from a Springvale business. Greater Dandenong CIU detectives said the first theft at the Centre Road business occurred between 3am and 4am on Saturday 6 December and involved three trailers. They believe the same thieves returned between 10pm on Monday 8 December and 1am on Tuesday 9 December and stole five camper trailers. The total value of the trailers is more than $135,000. Detectives have released images of two vehicles seen near the premises at the time of the thefts and images of trailers similar to those that were stolen. Raid drug charges
Dance mob’s looking flash SUDDEN singing, dancing and signing turned heads at Dandenong Plaza this month. Wallara officially opened its pop-up shop at the centre with a flash mob on Friday 5 December. The Dandenong support service for adults with disabilities organised Michael Buble-style crooner James Farrands to kick things off on the plaza’s lower level and lead up to 60 people up the escalator to the shop.
He had the Wallara Sing and Sign Choir in tow and music played through the centre’s PA system. X-Factor contestant Emmanuel Kelly sang outside the shop and triple Paralympic medallist Don Elgin spoke. Children First Foundation’s Moira Kelly adopted Emmanuel and his brother Ahmed from Iraq. abandoned them as infants. Don was born without the lower portion of his left leg but never let that hold him back. Wallara clients ran through a banner at the shop and helped to hand out fliers about employment services. “The overall atmosphere of the event was even better than we could have hoped for,” corporate partnerships and communications manager Karen Scholey said.

A DANDENONG man, 25, will answer charges over a suspected drug lab in his home. Police from the Dandenong Tasking Unit executed a drugs warrant at the Hutton Street premises about noon on 8 December and found a clandestine laboratory. They called in the Clandestine Laboratory Squad to disassemble the set-up and test chemicals they believed were being used to manufacture drugs. Police charged one man with possessing drugs. Further charges are pending.

GREATER Dandenong Council is set to make its third nibble at industrialising a green wedge area in Bangholme - at odds with its own report released last week. Councillors adopted its Green Wedge Management Plan last Monday which enshrined nonindustrial use in the green wedge. The plan identified the flood-prone Harwood Road North area - bounded by Harwood Road, Frankston-Dandenong Road, EastLink and Eumemmerring Creek - as preferably used for agriculture, open space and recreational uses. However, in the same motion, councillors also voted for starting an Industrial Change and Demand Study which would include the Harwood Road North precinct. Cr Matthew Kirwan unsuccessfully moved to strike out the inclusion of the Harwood North precinct in the study. He expected the pro-industrial push to be opposed by Melbourne Water, the EPA, Willow Lodge residents and Defenders of the South East Green Wedge - just as was the case when the council failed in a similar bid in 2011. At the Urban Growth Boundary Anomalies inquiry, Melbourne Water opposed the council’s submission on the grounds it was within the Eastern Treatment Plant buffer zone. “We need to stop banging our heads against a brick wall again and again and face up to the fact that this particular precinct - flood prone, next to the Eastern Treatment Plant (with the risk of accidental chlorine emissions), Willow Lodge and agricultural land - will never be suitable for industrial purposes,” Cr Kirwan said last week. “There is plenty of other land in this region that will meet the growing needs of industry in the south-east.” Cr John Kelly, in supporting the precinct’s inclusion in the study, said the council should keep its options open. “We’re an industrial town which subsidises our rates to an enormous amount,” Cr Kelly said. “Let’s have the study. Let’s see what comes back and make the decision then.” Of the plan’s 20 public submissions from Bangholme residents, eight sought the precinct’s conservation and eight sought more moderate, commercial or residential development. Just four supported more industrialisation.

GREATER Dandenong Council expects State Government developer Places Victoria to complete its unfinished promises after the expiration of the Metro 3175 development project. The 2002 joint agreement expired on 22 October, with Places Victoria yet to develop VicTrack land north of Cheltenham Road, build the Allan Street bridge across Dandenong Creek and complete several landscaping works. According to the council report, about 650 dwellings had been built as part of the project. Last week, councillors agreed to formally terminate the agreement while the council negotiates a new agreement to complete the project.

Little lights for lost lives MORE than 300 people paid tribute to little loved ones lost in Springvale last week. Springvale Botanical Cemetery hosted a free children’s Christmas remembrance service on Sunday 7 December. Cemetery administrator Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust’s (SMCT) chief operations officer and acting CEO Jane Grover said about 100 children were among those who gathered.
Families held candlelight lanterns, placed messages of love on a giant Christmas tree and sang traditional Christmas carols. “We hold this special service to mark the tragic passing of young lives and to give the families and friends of the deceased an opportunity to remember them at their resting place in the lead-up to Christmas,” Ms Grover said. “This is the 10th year we have held the event.
“Many of the people who attend our annual service come back year after year and they draw great comfort from the occasion. “Some of the attendees connect with people they have never met before but with whom they share the sorrow of losing a child.” More than 1200 children have been interred at Springvale Cemetery since 1987 when the children’s lawn area was established.

Hoon burnout blight By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS POLICE will step up anti-hoon patrols in Dandenong North after a public meeting on the issue this month. Inspector Bruce Kitchen of Greater Dandenong police said the 30-odd residents who attended the meeting had common concerns about hoons in many of the suburb’s streets including Heyington Crescent, Oakwood Avenue, Menzies Avenue and Elonera Road. He said police relied on swift community “intelligence” to triple zero which provided offending-vehicle descriptions and registration numbers. “We can’t get to all those spots. Because of the workload, we can’t sit in those spots without end.” Police scan social media to blitz planned hoon meets but the reckless high-revving and screeching rubber hoons which
are blighting Dandenong North seem less orgainsed. “It’s a different cohort. The stuff we’re talking about is more localised,” Inspector Kitchen said. “It would involve perhaps one or two cars in these locations.” He said offenders needed to realise that dropping burnouts and doughnuts was “high-risk driving” that inherently leads to less control of their vehicles. Other resident complaints included drug-dealing and discarded needles in a playground, as well as illegal parking too close to driveways and corners. Councillor John Kelly, who instigated the meeting, said a “lot of lessons” had been learnt about the hooning “which is becoming a cross on our community”. A follow-up public meeting is expected to be held in six months.

Latest figures show crime is on the move THIEVES seem to be focusing more on vehicles and less on homes in Greater Dandenong, according to the latest Victoria Police crime statistics. In the year up to September 2014, reported burglaries dipped by more than 20 per cent but reported stolen cars soared by 25 per cent. Car thefts were particularly on the rise in Keysborough and Noble Park.
Most of the stolen vehicles had been left unlocked by their owners and parked in residential areas. Inspector Bruce Kitchen of Greater Dandenong police said the burglary drop-off was the result of a concerted blitz on recidivist offenders as well as police warning nearby residents after a burglary has occurred. He said stolen num-

ber plates was looming as another large concern. A simple deterrent is to install one-way security screws into the plates. Police were also taking part in a boarding-house accord to tackle an 11 per cent rise in assaults excluding family violence. Inspector Kitchen said most of these assaults involved people known to each other.
Violence among drug and alcohol-affected boarding-house tenants would be covered under the accord modelled on a similar project involving liquor outlets in Dandenong. On the other hand, police targeting recidivist offenders seemed to curtail reported family violence. He warned of a breathtesting and automatic number-plate detection blitz in

the upcoming holiday season, despite an 11 per cent drop in road casualties. “This strategy is to keep drug and alcohol affected or unlicenced drivers off our roads. “If people get pulled over three or four times a day, they should remember it’s for their and everyone else’s safety.”

MEDICALLY SPEAKING
Sun dangers are under the skin AUSTRALIA and New Zealand enjoy the dubious honour of having the highest rates of sun induced skin cancers in the world. The reason behind these high rates is thought to be due to the genetic make-up and pale complexion of the majority of the inhabitants and also the lifestyles that people like to enjoy here. Until the 1980s by far the majority of Australian residents were pale skinned people of northern European descent and this genetic heritage leaves people susceptible to damage to the skin cell DNA from the strong
UV light that comes from the sun. Very dark skinned people enjoy relative protection from this effect because the pigmentation absorbs the UV light before it can damage the cells’ DNA. As the result of different rates of immigration from around the world, the skin cancers rates in Australia will change, but this will take many years to become evident. Regular skin checks are essential for all Australians, even those groups with very dark skin. Southern European complexion does not afford much protection, despite what people may hear to the con-
trary and the sun must be respected by all. The rates of skin cancer in this country mean that a well established system of monitoring is in place and surveillance can easily occur through dedicated clinics and experienced practitioners. Annual skin checks for people who have never had a skin cancer and biannual for those who have should be the basic principle. Regular photography of moles can allow people to avoid unnecessary surgical removals and can also iden-
tify early changes. Usually the skin specialised general practitioner or specialist dermatologist provides the surveillance services and can remove the smaller lesions either with freezing, creams, laser, shaving or surgery. Referral to a general surgeon or plastic and reconstructive surgeon is usually reserved for larger or more complex excisions that may require an anaesthetic. Any skin lesion that is changing, bleeding, itching or altering colour should be shown to a general practitioner for an opinion, and early removal is
usually most successful and causes the least cosmetic disturbance. South East Plastic Surgery offers a full specialised skin cancer surgical service and works together with an extensive number of general practitioners and dermatologists in comprehensive management of all kinds of skin cancers. Mr Charles Baillieu, Mr Ajay Chauhan and Dr Yvonne Chow consult and operate at St John of God Berwick Hospital. Patients must be referred from a GP. For all appointments, phone 9546 6267.

They won first prize in the inaugural Be Healthy, Be Happy, Be Here wheelbarrow competition. The council invited City of Greater Dandenong schools to take part in a competition promoting health and well-being through homegrown produce. They designed and filled a wheelbarrow that promoted sustainability and healthy eating. Springvale Park Special Development School will now participate in a cooking workshop with The Travelling Kitchen as its prize. The competition coincided with the Jamie’s Ministry of Food Mobile Kitchen visit to Dandenong during August, September and October. Second Place was awarded to Dandenong Primary School and the Rosewood Downs and St Elizabeth’s primary schools shared third place.

Students line up to build strong bonds with seniors DANDENONG students and seniors have forged an unlikely bond over the past 20 years. Emerson School junior/senior campus principal Dianne Wright has been teaching line dancing to residents at Valley Village Mews every second Monday since 1985. Students and staff visited the Stud Road retirement village on 20 November to dance with residents and perform a concert for them. “It is a lovely atmosphere and Thursday marked the 20th time we’ve met,” Ms Wright said. “Both eras of people look forward to sharing a very special time together, where for just a moment in time, all are ageless.” Residents put a donation into a jar at each lesson and village management at last month’s event presented a cheque to the specialist school, which caters for children with mild intellectual processing difficulties. They enjoyed lunch together and then Emerson School principal John Mooney played piano while the students and residents sang as one choir.

Juggling present early By JARROD POTTER THREE Dandenong Stingrays received their Christmas presents early, with confirmation of their places in the AFL Academy’s tour of the United States of America next year. Jacob Weitering, Gach Nyuon and Kieran Collins are part of the AFL Academy’s Level Two program and will travel to the United States on 10 January for a 12-day training camp at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. The step up in standard with the AFL Academy players has impressed Weitering, 17, from Mt Martha, the
most as every player is already at an exceptional level. “You have to have that belief factor going from a low level club footy - and being the best there - then into Dandenong Stingrays and into this… you have to restart as everyone is as good as you,” Weitering said. “How elite these boys are is another step up - It really does improve every facet of your game on and off the field and that you know you belong there, so that took me a little while to get into. “The biggest thing for all the boys is the off field stuff - we can just go out on the day to play our footy, but we
Jacob Weitering is put through his paces at the AFL Academy training session on Gosch’s Paddock. 132471 Picture: AFL MEDIA don’t know how the off-the-field side of it works - what food to eat, how to recover and perform consistently and that’s the main thing I’ll take out of it.” Weitering already has a few quality pieces of experience on his football resume - after travelling to New Zealand last year as a Level One scholarship holder and playing on the MCG against the Allies before the AFL Grand Final this year, which he described as “surreal” and “a boyhood dream”.
The rangy defender has enjoyed his time at Shepley Oval and hopes next year can be another step up as Dandenong works towards getting its maiden TAC Cup premiership. “Great experience under Craig Black the new coach - Blacky’s first year in,” Weitering said. “New game plan and new boys so it was fantastic to play with the older boys and the boys that went through this program last year.
“I got to play with them a lot… it was a great learning curve and will be a step up later on in life - it was great to implement Blacky’s game plan… maybe go one better next year as we got knocked out in the prelim (preliminary final)… we had a pretty good year.” The IMG Academy has trained such notable alumni as tennis stars Andre Agassi and Boris Becker as well as American NFL gridiron players Eli Manning and Cam Newton.
WNBL - Round 9
It’s a net result... all round By JARROD POTTER THE satisfaction of a sweet swish drove Alex Wood to change the outdoor basketball landscape in Victoria. For too long Wood and his brother Jackson played on outdoor courts without a net and while it seems a simplistic problem, the addition of a chain net for a few dollars each makes a dramatic difference to outdoor matches. It all started with that desire to swish and slam for Wood and his friends - who’d play pick-up basketball games on the courts around Mentone. “We noticed there’s resurgence in basketball and me and my basketball mates were wanting to play with a net,” Wood said. “We bought one and hung it up and all the kids wandered over from the skate park and were enjoying it. “It’s the part of the game everyone loves - the validation where the chain echoes and everyone knows you hit it you never get tired of hearing that. “Guys will stop playing so we can hang it and you can see them lift up their intensity as everyone stands taller under the net.” After crowd-funding $12000 from Kickstarter users, the Nothingbutnet legion of volunteers went about putting net after net up around Victoria. Their aim on Saturday was to hang 100 nets across Victoria, with the City of Greater Dandenong gaining the organisation’s attention for its huge basketball community and countless outdoor facilities. The duo strung up nets at over a dozen outdoor, council-owned basketball courts across the City of Greater Dandenong on Saturday as part of the organisation’s aim to reach every council court in metropolitan and suburban Melbourne and get more players out on court. The level of skill in Dandenong’s basketball community was part of the reason the Nothingbutnet founder/ baller wanted to hang nets in the city

Rangers steadily climb the ladder By JARROD POTTER Nothingbutnet’s Jackson and Alex Wood went to work hanging chain basketball nets across Dandenong on Saturday. 132466 Picture: JARROD POTTER as he hopes it encourages players to spend more time outside and improve their game even more. “One area we have all talked about is probably Dandenong,” Wood said. “It has a huge Sudanese community… they’re amazing with 14-yearolds who dunk on you - it’s a bit embarrassing but they’re incredible. “The whole city has a huge, diverse basketball community and there will be a lot more bouncing of the balls and swishing going on now.” The organisation is also in the process of creating a smartphone app to
tell players where their nets have been hung around Victoria, creating the first in-depth outdoor court maps in the state. “Every time we rock up - invariably within five minutes there will be kids playing on it,” Wood said. “They turn around and ask ‘are you going to take it away?’ and all we want is for them to take care of it.” Information on the start-up charity and requests to get nets put up on your local court can be found on their website www.nothingbutnet.org.au or its Facebook page Nothingbutnet.
DANDENONG maintained its winning run over West Coast this season with an 86-77 win on Friday night, despite the Waves once again stretching out to an early lead. The Rangers could not stop the power-packed guard duo of Deanna Smith (24 points) and Sarah Graham (16 points) early as the pair knocked down three after three at the WA Basketball Centre on Friday night. It would take time for the Rangers to turn it around, but steady progress came as Penny Taylor (23 points, 7 rebounds), Kathleen Macleod (19 points, 6 assists) and Alice Kunek (17 points) found their own down-town range.
The Rangers three-shooters made their attempts count as they drilled nine-of-16 from beyond the arc, including four in a resounding 28-point third term which shut the door on the Waves’ getting back into the clash. Team hustle around the Waves’ key proved the difference as Dandenong out-muscled the home side and snared 20 defensive rebounds alongside four blocks. With three wins in their past four matches, Dandenong is steadily moving up the WNBL ladder as the Rangers moved into fifth with a 5-7 record heading into its final match of the year when Dandenong will host Sydney Uni on Saturday from 3pm.

SPORT DANDENONG DISTRICT CRICKET ASSOCIATION - TURF 1 Round 6 (day 1)
VICTORIAN PREMIER CRICKET 1st Round 11 (Twenty20)
Powerhouse Panthers gaining momentum By JARROD POTTER
Jurgen Andersen steamed in for North Dandenong on a dull day for the visitors. 132470
Lyndale paceman Ricky Foulstone gets a pat on the head for a scintillating Pictures: JARROD POTTER first spell. 132467
The devil in Dushan By JARROD POTTER BERWICK (2/233) put its first innings points on lay-away as North Dandenong (90) failed to find any fluency with the blade or ball. BERWICK v NORTH DANDENONG AT EVERY turn lurked a Bears’ wicket - Dushan Wickramarathna (4/20) will feature in a few North Dandenong nightmares this week as the Berwick spearhead crushed the visitors’ hopes. Resilience came from Caleb Millman (25), Dean Gunawardana (22) and Liam Dudding (15), but only in small doses as Berwick restricted North Dandenong to a scant 90 from its 33.4 overs. It left Berwick with an eternity to bat, notch first innings points and potentially send the visitors back in for a second dose of pain. Captain Jarrod Goodes (41) struck the boundaries early before copping a straight one from Shane Clark, leaving the rest of the job to Ryan Williamson (52 not out), Brad James (37) and a huge knock from Bathiya Perera (81 not out). Finding his best fluency before Christmas, Perera flogged nine boundaries and four sixes across the Arch Brown Reserve arena to give North Dandenong nothing to smile about heading
off at stumps. Goodes kept his side at the crease - choosing to set a monster tally for the Northerners next week instead of sending them back in at the death. The match resides in his hands now as North Dandenong can only hope to hold on in its inevitably long second innings next week. LYNDALE v HALLAM KALORA PARK YOU could only wonder what could have been for Lyndale (1/13) after running through Hallam Kalora Park’s (177) top order. The battle belonged to the home side until tea as Ricky Foulstone (3/35) and Dale Tormey (2/49) razed any Hawk that came near the crease. At 4/30 the Hawks sat dangerously close to their demise in the baking heat, but were able to turn back the clock and bat out 72 overs en route to 177. Liam Mara (2/37) would join the Lyndale bowling party to finish the job. The day didn’t go completely Lyndale’s way as it lost Conal Ranatunga (4) just before day’s end. HEINZ SOUTHERN DISTS v DANDY WEST HONOURS were split at Reedy Reserve as Heinz Southern Districts (191) put up the par score against Dandenong West. It could have been significantly worse as the
Cobras took a while to get warmed up. Three quick wickets to the Bulls left the ketchup makers in danger, but the source of Heinz’s success would come from Matt Cox (40) and Shehan Bandaranayake (40) as they added 65 for the fourth wicket before Cox struck one straight back to Andrew Harry (1/23). Bits and bobs and starts aplenty would highlight the remaining Heinz innings as no one truly booked a big score. Jaswant Singh (3/34) and Peter Atkinson (2/33) worked their way down the Cobras’ scorecard and the skipper would be please with a sub200 chase next week on a lightning fast Reedy Reserve in the midst of summer. COOMOORA v BUCKLEY RIDGES A LITTLE bit from everyone pushed Buckley Ridges (9/228) to the front against the languishing Coomoora. After their earlier loss this week - conceding a 2-3 defeat in the Statewide Twenty20 Cup “bowloff” against Cranbourne - the Ridges came out with a point to prove as Anuj Dal (48), Jayson Hobbs (46) and Hussain Ali (28) dispatched all and sundry. The pain ran through the order even as number-10 Nathan Beaver (28 not out) connected with anything bowled at-the-death.
A superb bowling effort from Joseph Hawke (4/77) kept the match from getting further out of control while Dillon Gemmell-Smith (2/72) also found himself holding up an end ably at Coomoora Reserve. Joel Robertson (3/11) was the other major scalp snarer for the Kangaroos. PARKFIELD v SPRINGVALE SOUTH THERE wasn’t much to cheer about for the reigning premiers on Saturday as Springvale South (8/284dec) avenged its grand-final defeat against Parkfield (1/7). Nathan King (93) had the ball on a string as he smashed the Bears to all parts of Parkfield Reserve for his first halfton in 2014/15. King would be cruelly robbed of his maiden century as he thickly edged one through to the keeper off Shane Bell (3/20). The Parkfield captain would sparingly use himself, instead preferring Travis D’Souza (1/90) to rattle through 25 overs with his spin. On the opposition side, Jackson Sketcher (49 not out), Andrew Staude (33) and Ryan Quirk (31) kept the foot on the gas as the Bloods raced towards 300. A fighting declaration late in the day sent the Bears in and import Joe Wheal (0) succumbed in the heat to a straightener from Jarrod Armitage (1/3).
VICTORIAN SUB-DISTRICT CRICKET ASSOCIATION - South East 1st XI Round 6 (day 2)
Season for Bulls... still alive and kicking By JARROD POTTER GORING its way to first innings points, Noble Park (5/156dec) charged through Moorabbin (92 and 7/83) to almost steal the outright victory. The Bulls were unstoppable at Moorleigh Village as first-innings points were caught up with quickly. The resounding work of Marasinghe Perera (62) and Mevan Fernando (64) set up a chance at the outright victory as Paul Hill (2 not out) brought his charges back in after a 59-over innings. With 64 runs in the bank and 28 overs to make something magical happen, the Bulls charged in to keep the outright chance alive. Rizan Mawzoon (3/23) hit peak form
at the right time to spear through the Moorabbin middle order, while Ash Perera (1/20) and Sanjeewa de Silva (2/7) also kept the pressure up to the home side. In the end the result was dictated by the setting sun as Moorabbin edged past the first innings target and survived by the skin of their teeth. The win keeps Noble Park’s premiership defence alive as the Bulls move up to eighth place on the VSDCA South-East ladder, only three points behind the final six. Noble Park is off to Croydon for a one-dayer in the last round of 2014. ENDEAVOUR HILLS v OAKLEIGH ENDEAVOUR HILLS (162) on the other hand threw away a prime
opportunity to move into the upper echelons of the VSDCA ladder. Silly middle order hitting left the Eagles 41 runs short against Oakleigh (210) as a slump set in quickly. Number three Shean Vanderwert (60) looked the man to guide the Eagles home, as he ticked off the first half of the chase alongside the departing Gamindu Amarasinghe (12) and Thomas Hafil (11). Vanderwert would find the boundary with some scintillating strokes, en route to his second half-ton of the season, but his hard-hitting addiction proved his demise as a rush of blood left him out, slogging at 5/98. He would be part of the middleorder procession that ran through the crease like it was a turnstile with
the order falling from 2/71 to 7/111 in the blink of an eye. The best efforts of Vaughan Baxter (30) held together the lower order and kept some semblance of victory alive. Baxter and Ben Swift (17) were the partnership that needed to stick, but once Swift dollied a caught-andbowled back to Ben Pinwill (5/48), the Eagles’ chances dissipated. Baxter would be the last out as he and captain Chris Pereira (4 not out) attempted to salvage the points. Endeavour Hills will head to Bayswater for the final match of the year. Endeavour Hills’ batsman Shean Vanderwert replays the shot on which he succumbed for 60. 132468 Picture: JARROD POTTER
WRAPPING up the season nicely, Dandenong (2/153cc) finished off Fitzroy Doncaster (6/122) to give the Panthers some momentum heading into the last match of the year. The problems surrounding Dandenong’s start to the season - conceding early wickets - failed to feature in this week’s powerhouse performance as Tom Donnell, Brett Forsyth and James Pattinson smacked the Lions away. A Swashbuckling start from Tom Donnell (40) gave the Panthers the perfect foundation to shoot for the stars. Forsyth (52) struck the leather cleanly to set up a 90-run stand with Pattinson (56 not out) as the duo turned the match on its head. Pattinson backed up his starring effort with the blade as he charged in for four overs while the damage was done by Dan Doran (3/17) and James Nanopoulos (3/26). The Lions had their pride dented by the spin/medium pace tandem as Doran skittled the top order before Nanopoulos finished the job. A gallant captain’s knock from Tim Sheehan (58 not out) was the only shining light of the Fitzroy Doncaster innings as Sheehan failed to find any significant help. Year’s end will be at home for Dandenong as the Panthers take on Greenvale this week.

The runs just pile up THE only way the opposition could see off cricketer Carin Eastburn was for her to… fly out of the country. A pre-Christmas cricket spree has given the Berwick batswoman nearly 500 runs and she still has next year to add to the season’s tally. Carin Eastburn, from Berwick, has been a mainstay in local cricket for the last 25 years and is in sublime touch this season as she’s smashed about all and sundry playing for the Dandenong Women’s Cricket team as their seconds’ team captain. The runs have been piling up at a great rate this season - including three centuries already in 2014/15 at an average of 119.75 - as Eastburn’s innings this year resemble a good player’s career highlights - 114 not out, 111, 100, 47, 46, 31 and 30. “It’s been ridiculous - everything is coming off,” Eastburn said. “I know it’s a purple patch and you look at Bradman and he needed four to average 100 and went out for a duck, so I need to roll with it as long as possible. “I haven’t even failed yet this year, it’s a bit embarrassing, but I’ve been playing 25 years… 20 years in the seniors… I know it’s a rare thing so I’m just stoked.” Eastburn didn’t return to the seconds to be a flat-track bully though - she’s looking past her own tally
to help guide the younger players through to their own milestones. “I had a 160 run partnership with Cass (Pollock) which was cool and she made her first 50 for the season so I love seeing the kids perform,” Eastburn said. “For me it’s all about partnerships… that’s the second 150-run partnership I’ve had with one of the girls… that’s the reason I’m playing there (2nd XI). “I’ve been playing ones for a long, long time, but I had shoulder surgery… since shoulder surgery I came back last year and this year just captaining the twos. “It’s nice to be able to pass on some of that knowledge before I retire.” On top of her cricketing talents, Eastburn recently returned from a trip to India to help build houses for the needy with a group of Lighthouse Christian College Year-12 student she has taught. “With the service trip it’s like a schoolies trip for the end of Year-12 and we’ve run it through Habitat for Humanity,” Eastburn said. “We had to fundraise to get over there and fundraise to help with the materials as well as Habitat for Humanity is not-for-profit. “We fly over there, help out with a local family, do whatever they need with their house for nine or 10 days and then we fly back.”

What is behind the Vales By RUSSELL BENNETT ONE of Victoria’s oldest basketball clubs is constantly looking for ways of encouraging new people into the sport. The Springvale Basketball Club, or ‘The Vales’, has been in operation each year since 1958, catering for both children and adults from all backgrounds. Essentially, the club welcomes anyone who wants to develop or improve their basketball skills. The Vales are structured as a non-profit incorporated association, run by an honorary committee and a team of volunteer coaches and team managers. The club currently has 50 senior and junior teams participating in local associations across Dandenong, Cranbourne, Frankston and Westernport; and also operates junior development programs
from its base at Springers Leisure Centre in Keysborough. “The club differs from others because we never say no to anyone who wants to play - for kids who, for whatever reason, feel like they couldn’t play,” said club stalwart and Administration Officer Jane Hong, who added that the Vales had just two teams eight years ago but now run their own ‘Aussie Hoops’ program. “We want every child in the area playing sport, whether that be basketball, cricket or tennis,” she said. Jane has been involved at the club since her daughter was 10. She’s now 16 and loving her time at the Vales. Jane, herself, was recognised as the Vales’ best clubperson recently but she wasn’t there to accept the award because she was out volunteering for the club.
Three wins... in one week
The Vales are run simply through the hard work of their dedicated volunteers who relentlessly apply for grants through organisations such as the Bendigo Bank, but also the City of Greater Dandenong which has been a huge support. The club’s volunteers are on a simple mission: To form a family group for everyone, regardless of age or cultural background. The Vales have two Aussie Hoops training sessions every Wednesday: Prep to Grade 2 from 4.30pm to 5.15pm, and Grade 3 to Grade 6 from 5.15pm to 6pm. They also have a goal to operate a free basketball clinic on Tuesdays. For more information about the Vales - including the competitions and associations they’re involved in - visit www.vales.com.au.
LAMIA Bale claimed her third win in a week to take out the $36,000 Group 3 Sir John Dillon Memorial at Sandown Park this week. Beginning quickly from Box 2, Lamia Bale powered to an early lead over TAB favourite Awesome Project and that’s how it stayed, racing to a three-and-a-half length victory in 34.09 seconds over the 595m trip. “It was a super run I’m really rapped,” said handler Heather Collins. “I thought once she got out in front she’d be hard to run down... an impressive run given it was only her second start over the distance.” After impressing in her heat win the previous Thursday, Lamia Bale showed her versatility by returning to Sandown Park on Sunday and winning a heat of the Group 2 Macro Meats Laurels over 515m. While competing in the two series wasn’t the original plan, Collins was confident Lamia Bale was capable. “The heats on the Sunday caught us out a little bit but it’s worked out so far... she’s one of those dogs that pulls up a treat after each run... had a ‘freshen up’ after her run on Sunday and she was jumping out of her skin, ready to go tonight (Thursday).” Thursday’s win was Lamia Bale’s 10th in 33 career starts, and the $25,000 winner’s cheque took her career earnings to $83,855. If she runs in the first two in her Macro Meats Laurels semi-final on Sunday, she’ll qualify for the final on Sunday 21 December and compete for a $50,000 first prize. For runner-up Awesome Project, it completed a remarkable 2014 which saw the Darren McDonald trained chaser place 15 out of 16 starts at Sandown Park - winning 10 - qualify for five feature finals and earn $178,210.
