“We’ve had a wonderful year of discovering our place,” Cr McAllister said. “It’s been discovered through art, performance, drawing, music, parties and costumes.” Nadia Fragnito, a former Warburton resident, won the competition for her script, The Colour of Fire, which is set 10 years after the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires. Children around the town received a legacy to take them towards the town’s 200th anniversary in 2064 in the form of a laser-cut badge bearing the 150th logo, set on bamboo.

The badge was given to all primary school students around the area, according to Ms Holton, who said it would be a reminder when the next major birthday came up. “It was given to be a memento and to be an inspiration to them,” she said. “It was a great moment to inspire the kids who will be responsible for putting on the 200th birthday in 2064.” For a gallery of pictures taken at different 150th celebrations this year, visit mail.starcommunity.com.au.

“I think the highlight of the parade, for me, was Bunjil the Eagle and the Indigenous community going in first. “It was great to see the town pull together in times of adversity, and it was great to see everyone pull together just to have fun and celebrate,” she said. Ryrie Ward Councillor and former-mayor Fiona McAllister also paid tribute to the end of the 150th year at Sunday’s Awards Night for Exit Theatre’s My Place, My People Scriptwriting Competition.

HEALESVILLE’S 150th birthday is winding to a close, with competitions and events finishing up and historical launches taking place to cap off a year of celebration. The history of Healesville will be on display for residents and visitors alike this week, with the Healesville and District Historical Society launching their latest edition of their Images of Time book series today (Tuesday 16 December). The book, Coming of Age, tracks the history of the town with photographs and information from the 1920s to the 1950s, and will be launched at the Healesville Library on Tuesday 16 December from 1.30pm onwards. On Wednesday 17 December, the Rotary Club of Healesville will officially launch its History Walk, which comprises 25 signs at historic buildings and icons around the town. The launch will take place at 10am at Healesville railway station - one of the locations on the walk - and a walking map of the town, showing all the destinations, will be available throughout the town. The historic events cap off a year of events celebrating the town’s 150th birthday, which culminated in November with a street parade, a party in Queens Park and a Heritage Festival at the railway station. Community 3777 chair Kath Holton, who helped co-ordinate many of the year’s celebratory events, said the events had been as successful and diverse as the town they were based in. “I think it’s been a great success,” she said. “I think there were so many different things on that it really did reflect the diversity of our community - it reflected how everybody got involved and put on their own events and exhibitions,” she said. She praised the different schools and community groups in the town that gathered to take part in the 150th street parade on 8 November, with almost every group in Healesville represented. “The primary schools all got on board - even the dog walkers were in the parade, and it was fantastic,” Ms Holton said.

A FUNDING agreement to keep Healesville’s indoor pool running into the future has yet to be signed, almost nine months after the Yarra Ranges Council agreed to save the facility. But the council and the Healesville High School, which owns the Jack Hort Memorial Pool, have both said they are working on a new agreement to be finalised before the end of the year. put forward an urgent motion to increase the annual funding for the pool from $10,000 to $40,000 for the year, after a funding deficit threatened to close it. This was conditional on an audit being conducted on the pool. As of 10 December, no formal agreement seems to have been signed between the two groups, though Healesville High School Principal George Perini said the school and the council were working through a
memorandum of understanding on the matter. Ryrie Ward Councillor Fiona McAllister told the Mail the same thing, and that the two parties had been revising an outdated agreement on the pool’s funding. Cr McAllister said the agreement was expected to be finished by the end of the year, and that the matter of the pool’s funding being renewed would come before council in 2015. “I have no doubt it will be renewed,” she said.

Businesses take stock by the end of the year, we’ll be looking at 45,000 volunteer hours,” he said. “It’s truly massive.” Anthony Turner, who co-wrote the award-winning book Are U Ready? Surviving Small Business Disaster, also ran a presentation on business risks and potential catastrophes, such as the Black Saturday bushfires. He said that, for businesses, there were four important stages when it came to business ‘disasters’ - planning, preparation, response and recovery. Using the example of a person who backed up their business’s computer files multiple times and stored
some back-ups off-site, only to have all of them destroyed in the bushfires, he said business disasters can range from minimal to catastrophic. He urged businesses to consider backing up data online through cloud-services, such as Dropbox, and to prepare alternate arrangements if their current premises become unusable due to fire, floods or another disaster. Mr Turner said an important aspect of avoiding small business disaster was not to have the mentality that disasters will only happen to other people. “Disasters don’t care - they impact whoever is in their path,” he said.

Fake notes in circulation RESIDENTS are being asked to be wary of counterfeit notes around the valley in the lead-up to Christmas, after three fake notes were handed into a Healesville bank. Three counterfeit $50 notes were handed in to Healesville’s Commonwealth Bank in the two weeks leading up to 10 December. Healesville Chamber of Commerce president Graham Taylor said that residents and business owners should be wary of potentially-dodgy notes. Genuine banknotes will spring back into shape when scrunched up, are difficult to tear, and feature the Australian Coat of Arms if held up to the light. Anyone suspecting they may have a counterfeit note should contact their local police station, or the Australian Federal Police. For more, visit banknotes.rba.gov.au.

THE Federal Government’s Green Army program has started up work in the Yarra Valley, with workers set to team up with local Landcare groups in the next six months. Green Army members began their work along the banks of Badger Creek last week, working handin-hand with Yarra Ranges Council staff and the Mount Toolebewong Landcare group. The combined group planted native trees and grasses along the banks and roadsides, and will be
working in areas around Healesville, Coldstream and Yarra Glen until April 2015. Yarra Ranges Council’s Bush Crew leader Steve Brunt said the group had planted up to 400 native plants on Thursday 4 December, and would work around the valley in coming months. “We’ve currently got a team of nine working for five to six months around the Healesville area,” he said. “We’ve got a good, young group - they’ve only started this week, but it’s all gone well.

HEALESVILLE police are calling for information after a wallet and an industrial-sized rideown lawnmower were stolen earlier this month. Overnight on 6 December, a wallet was stolen from a car in Bangambalanga Avenue in Chum Creek. On the same night, a large, industrial-sized ride-on lawnmower was stolen from a property on Ryans Road in Chum Creek. The mower was a Cub Cadet, and is worth around $10,000. Police do not believe the incidents are related, but urged anyone who may have seen suspicious activity to contact Healesville police on 5962 4422 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

HEALESVILLE High School’s male students - and teachers donned dresses for a day to raise money and make a difference in the world. On 25 November, more than 10 boys and around five members of staff at Healesville High School wore a dress for the day, as part of a fund-raiser organised by the school’s Student Voice leadership group. The rest of the school students had a free dress day, with each student taking part donating a gold coin to the fund-raiser, which was for the One Girl organisation. Altogether, the event raised $433.24 for One Girl, which was then complemented by another fund-raiser by the school’s Year 9 Make a Difference participants, boosting the donation to $600. School captain Rohan Saric-
Skewes said the money would help to send two girls in Sierra Leone to school for a year. Rohan said that he would have liked to have seen more boys at the school take part in the fund-raiser, but that cold weather may have deterred a few of the less keen fundraisers. “I would have liked it to be a bit better, but it was still good,” he said. He said the school was trying to advocate and fund-raise for causes in its free dress days, and that education for women in developing countries was a good cause to fight for. “Because women are needed to break the poverty cycle, and women’s education is very important to the world,” Rohan said. Healesville High School principal George Perini said he felt the event was a success.

THE Yarra Valley’s Chambers of Commerce signed off for the year with a Christmas breakfast earlier this month, receiving an update on the railway restoration works in Yarra Glen. The Healesville, Mount Evelyn, Yarra Glen and Lilydale Chambers of Commerce, along with the Warburton Valley Community Economic Development Association (CEDA) gathered on 3 December at Yering Meadows Golf Course for the breakfast. Around 150 business owners and community representatives attended the breakfast, where Yarra Glen
Chamber of Commerce president Alex Lagerwey updated the members on recent events, including the Healesville 150th weekend and a historic truck show in town. Yarra Valley Railway (YVR) vice-president Brett Whelan then ran a presentation, updating the members on the work to restore the rail line between Yarra Glen and Healesville. Mr Whelan said that the YVR development was completely run by volunteers, and that the amount of volunteer hours each year soared from 3000 hours in 2007 to 40,000 in 2010. “This year, already, we’ve clocked in 40,000 hours - probably

It’s Sonya’s lifeline By KATH GANNAWAY SONYA Weir has lost a partner and a brother to suicide. As she sets out on a road trip from Lilydale to Port Douglas in January, she has two goals. She will be raising money to help support organisation The Compassionate Friends, but her main aim through ‘Sonya’s Road Trip Making A Difference’, is to suicide awareness. “If a hundred people who are depressed or having thoughts of suicide see the sign-writing on the camper and one person decides to get help ... “ the sentence remains unfinished until she gathers her thoughts. “If just one person sits back and says ‘maybe it’s not worth it’ and doesn’t take their own life, I will have achieved what I set out to do. Sonya, a single mum with three children, grew up and works in Healesville. Six years ago her partner Rob took his own life. It was a shock. “I was the last person to speak to him the night before and his last words were ‘it’s all good; talk to you tomorrow’; there was no indica-
tion, Sonya said. Three years later Rick’s death hit like a bolt of lightning. He was 36, best described, she says, as ‘a loveable larrikin’. “He was working in the mines in Mackay, waiting to get his last mining certificate and then he was going back home to Surfers; but that didn’t happen, she said. She said Rick, a father of three, was due to get married in a couple of months and while he may have been struggling financially, she says he had the whole world ahead of him. She says “There are no answers. Despite the heartache, or because of it, Sonya is determined to throw out a life-line in whatever way she can to others who are at risk of suicide. Two years ago she restored a Datsun Ute in memory of Rick, and this year she put her energy and passion into doing up a camper for the road trip which is dedicated to her brother. It’s hard to miss the message, and that’s just what she wants. “I learnt at a TCF seminar that males in that age-group are in the highest risk group for suicide. “I want to get that message out and this trip is the start of many; I

THE first of Victoria Police’s road safety operations has wound up, catching hundreds of drivers breaking the law on Yarra Ranges roads. Operation RAID (Remove All Impaired Drivers) was run across the state from 14 November to 7 December, with Highway Patrols
in each Police Service Area (PSA) cracking down on drunk drivers. In the Yarra Ranges, police charged 32 people with drink driving offences throughout the operation, as well as detecting hundreds of other offences. Speeding drivers were seen in
large numbers over the operation period, with 503 drivers caught, as well as 32 disqualified or suspended drivers, 26 unlicensed drivers and 79 unregistered vehicles detected. Thirty-four drivers were caught using their mobile phones while driving, while 30 were caught in
moving cars without seatbelts and 19 drivers disobeyed traffic signs or signals, such as red lights and stop signs. Four cars were also impounded in the operation, which was the first out of the four-part Summer Stay police campaign.

I AM sorry that some people have had issues with off-lead dogs in Warburton but it is not an easy solution to say to go to Wesburn Park. It would be a great place to walk but it’s hot and dusty in summer, very muddy in winter. The off-lead area is very small, has no shade, has a busy road running close by, is used by the dog obedience club and the fire trucks use that part for hose practise. If the off-lead area there was extended it might encourage more people to use it, but for dog owners in East Warburton it is a long way to travel. Lillydale Lake and Margaret McKenzie reserve in Coldstream are just too far. Warrandyte has a large length of river path that is off-lead, so why are Warburton dog owners not given the same benefits? Surely something better could be arranged after all, we pay enough registration money for our dogs. Chris Dimmock, Warburton.
Remember this, Daniel? THE Andrews/Merlino Labor is sworn in and immediately the strong-arm (but weak-minded) CFMEU shuts down an Aldi construction site. How fitting; because we all saw Daniel Andrews could wave his arm (with left hand pointed of course!) with great ease at a list of promises (including re-opening tech schools after Labor - which slammed them shut on working families 20 years ago) in his electioneering TV advertisement. I wonder if the tiny lady security guard whose arm was so very badly wounded when those violent CFMEU hoodlums smashed (with a sledgehammer and other heavy metal weapons) the plate glass doors of Australia’s Federal Parliament House now, has as unrestricted movement of her so very brave little lady’s arm, as compared to Andrews’ hot air election arm waving? And Daniel Andrews (and, James Merlino), just what of that so very courageous policewoman’s arm? You know, that so brave policewoman who can’t even now hold the reins of her family’s horse the way she once could!
Editor’s goodbye TODAY we celebrate our last paper of 2014, and for me, my last paper at the Mail. I’ve throughly enjoyed my seven years at the Mail and sister company Star News Group, but have made the difficult decision to try a new challenge in the daily breaking news cycle. I’ve loved every moment here - the beautiful drives through the Ranges and Valley, the friendly faces I met along the way and those of you who trusted me to tell your story.
What, Daniel Andrews, do you say to her? Especially after such a brave lady, being forced into retirement out of the job she loved so much in the Victoria Police Force after the inept Labor appointed Christine Nixon (the chief commissioner who abandoned her post on Black Saturday for - among other things - a hair appointment). The brave policewoman’s badly damaged arm, wounded in Melbourne’s G20 riots so severely after Nixon took the word of (hoping to rein in the policewoman arm smashing) rioters that they’d “be good girls and boys”. Then, the Labor appointee did not even equip the so badly wounded policewoman (who did not have time for a hair appointment) and her colleagues with the appropriate body armour and/ or riot gear! And was not the so bikie-gang/organised crime tainted CFMEU you’re so arm-in-arm with, so very heavily involved among the “usual suspects” during most, such violent rioting protests Daniel Andrews? And no doubt Daniel Andrews, whenever you’re giving a “a wave” to any adoring crowd including your CFMEU “brothers-in-arms” you so revere, no doubt, Daniel Andrews, you are thinking of the so-damaged arms of those two so very brave ladies; neither of whom failed their duty of care? Howard Hutchins, Chirnside Park.
A myki moment TWELVE years since travelling by train I accompanied a friend to the city on Tuesday, 9 December 2014 from Lilydale. My first myki and needed to learn the ropes! Thanks to Clive who was on duty at the ticket box the entire experience was easy, friendly and professional! As a senior I was a tad apprehensive about the rigmarole of myki but Clive made it a simple procedure. I would like the shire to know the Lilydale station is a particularly good one thanks to him. I had a fabulous day in the city, also a first in more than 12 years! Lots of changes but wonderful! I loved it when I lived there and my visit today was a reminder of that! Jan Forrest, Thornton.
There’s been some obviously memorable stories - Black Saturday, Tecoma McDonald's, the Olinda Pool and others that will always stick at the back of my mind, including my story on forced adoption for single mothers with then Yarra Junction resident June Smith. For each and every one of you I have met, I wish you luck, health and prosperity. You never know, we might cross paths again some day. Melissa Meehan, now former Editor, Mail Newspaper Group.

VCAT tower appeal set AN appeal to VCAT against plans to build a 40-metre communications tower in Millgrove will take place in Melbourne on 15 and 16 January. Millgrove resident Sheila Goodwin is challenging the decision by Yarra Ranges Council to grant a planning permit for the tower, which will be located at the sawmill site in Millgrove.
Ms Goodwin was one of a number of objectors to the proposal which, she says, will degrade the centre of the township, disrupt views and compromise a heritage overlay over the site. “Residents of Millgrove who object to the proposed current location of the tower are asked to rally together and come along either on one day
or the other, or both,” Ms Goodwin said. “This will be our only opportunity to appeal against the location for the current permit.” A community bus will leave Millgrove at 8am on both days of the hearing with an anticipated return time of around 7pm. Phone Ms Goodwin on 0451 152 042 to book a seat.

Cindy pips Sally to post By JESSE GRAHAM THE VOTES are in and Eildon’s election has been called. At 4pm on Tuesday 9 December, Liberal candidate Cindy McLeish was officially announced as the winner of the seat of Eildon for the Victorian State Election. Receiving 51.7 per cent of the total votes after preferences, Ms McLeish beat Labor candidate Sally Brennan by 1257 votes, after months of heavy campaigning from both sides. The result was announced at the Eildon District Election Office in Woori Yallock by Election manager Peter Williams on behalf of the Victorian Electoral Commission. Ms McLeish said it was a “privilege and a pleasure” to be elected as the first member for Eildon as well as being the last sitting member for the abolished seat of Seymour. Reiterating her comments after Election Day on 29 November when she had a sizable lead and was the predictedwinner, she said her victory was “bitter-sweet”, as Labor’s statewide victory makes her an opposition member. “To win this is terrific, but to lose government, I find it quite sad.” Under the Labor Government, Yarra Junction Primary School will receive $2 million for repairs for damaged and condemned buildings. Though Ms McLeish won Eildon, a large number of Liberal promises cannot be implemented. Ms Brennan offered strong competition throughout the campaign, and voters along the Warburton Highway voted in large numbers for Labor, with Launching Place, Millgrove, Warburton, Warburton East, Wesburn and Yarra Junction recording more votes for Ms Brennan than Ms McLeish. But the Liberals seemed to be the favourite at almost every other booth, with the Nationals 1166209-EG51-14
Eildon MP Cindy McLeish, right, shakes Eildon District Election Office manager Peter Williams’ hand after being announced as the winner. 132276 Picture: JESSE GRAHAM only winning one other in Gladysdale. Healesville’s two booths, Mansfield and Yarra Glen had the highest voter turnouts, with 3213, 2328 and 1530 votes recorded in each area - the Liberals scored the most votes at each of these booths. Incorrect votes were also seen in high amounts in Eildon, with 5.23 per cent of the total votes - 2042 ballot papers - declared informal. The result may well have gone Ms Brennan’s way if a majority of those informal votes were filled out properly in favour of the ALP candidate. Ms Brennan told the Mail shortly after Election Day that she had conceded the race, but that she was pleased with the state-wide result for her party. “I would have loved to have won it (Eildon), but we’ve made some serious inroads into it being a safe seat - it is now definitely not a safe seat,” she said. She said that Labor would have a strong chance at gaining the seat at the 2018 Victorian election. “I think whoever does run in the next election will have a very real chance of winning it,”
she said. Ms McLeish said that she would advocate for the electorate over the next four years of government and put pressure on the Labor Government to fund projects that the Coalition pledged funding for. “I think it’s my job to speak up for schools that didn’t get funding, the CFA and all of those things,” Ms McLeish said. She added that Labor’s lack of a majority in the Senate would be a check against the new government’s power in the lower house. “That will allow us to put pressure on them and to keep them honest,” she said. Ms McLeish said that her attention was now focused on setting up her former-Seymour office for the time being, after packing up post-election only to find that a site in Eildon had yet to be confirmed. She said that being based in Seymour would be a “pain”, as it is based well out of the electorate, but that the government was organising a suitable site within the electorate. For more details on Eildon’s election results, visit www.vec.vic.gov.au.

Pages from the past Healesville Guardian 8 December 1934 Widespread flood havoc: many people homeless ALMOST all of the State of Victoria was in the grip of the most devastating flood yet known in the Commonwealth last weekend. Along with many other large areas, Lilydale, Upper Yarra and Healesville suffered severely. Even now practically a week after, the full extent of the damage is not known. It was the biggest accumulation of water in Healesville’s history. Healesville had the preservation of the animals at the sanctuary to preserve, after Kookaburra Park was completely inundated. When the fence was swept away, the animals were at large in the bush and how they were eventually rescued is one of those unaccountable mysteries. Lake Yumbunga’s retaining wall on the west side of the spillway gave away. Cr Hodges says he won’t be beaten and the damage will be remedied before Christmas. The floods cut the railway services on the Yarra Glen line. This caused the town to go almost hungry for a day or two, until the railway began to tidy things over by running one of their big trains between Healesville and Lilydale. There was such a famine in Nicholson Street that you could not buy three-penny worth of corned beef. Fruit was at a low ebb and lots of other provisions that we depend on the train to bring us. A big landslide occurred on Don Road resulting from the floods. It appears that the roadway is too far gone to allow reconstruction, the side of the mountain having almost disappeared. Probably a new route will have to be opened. Closure of the Don Road is bad business for Healesville especially with the holiday coming. A number of Indian Scouts, now encamped at Frankston were about to visit Healesville next week. They will be accommodated at Warrawee.
Warburton Mail 11 December 1964 Round Up A FAREWELL evening was held in the Adventist Hall, Warburton, on Saturday evening 28 November in honour of Dr and Mrs E. G. Thrift who are leaving for England shortly. The doctor plans to take a post-graduate course in one of the newer fields of specialisation in the nature of physical medicine which aims at the re-education of muscles that have been paralysed through polio, a stroke or by accident. Yarra Junction Firemen Yarra Junction firemen Ron Reid, Graham Rogers, Wayne Barker, Malcolm Ireland, John Shalders, George Shortis, George Hawkins and Ken McLeish took part in the Regional Council Number Seven Urban Fire Brigades’ Third Annual Demonstration at Werribee last Saturday. The boys put up a very good performance to finish second to Lilydale for the grand aggregate, scoring 22 points to Lilydale’s 26. Railway News THE closing down of the Lilydale-Warburton rail passenger service has cast a ‘shadow of doom’ over the Upper Yarra and, according to some people, it’s the finish as far as the district is concerned. Who uses the railways up this end and who is going to miss the service? Upper Yarra Shire Council has readily agreed to co-operate with the newly set up Wesburn Advancement League. At the last council meeting, the council agreed to accept responsibility for the control of Wesburn Park and the former Hall Reserves. Circus equipment valued at more than £250,000 will roll into Warburton next Wednesday for a one night show at the Recreation Reserve. Decades of septic system misery, banished in days. Queensland couple Mike and Rose Maynard talk about their decadeslong battle with septic tank odours and fouling, and the environmentally friendly solution that restored their pride in their home within two weeks.
“Our septic system was put in when we built in 1988,” says Mike Maynard from his rural property in sunny Queensland. “Over the years we have had continuing problems with the system not working properly. The area around the trench would get so wet and boggy that we could not even walk near it, let alone use the mower.” But that wasn’t the worst bit of their dysfunctional septic system. “The smell would become almost overpowering at times,” says Mike, “especially when it rained or when we had visitors to stay, which was quite embarrassing.”
The stink that stuck The problem wouldn’t go away, which is common with septic tanks and wastewater treatment systems. “As time went on, the smell was becoming a constant thing,” explains Rose. Septic systems are much like a digestive system for your house. Just as you need healthy bacteria in your body, your septic system needs a healthy balance of good bacteria to process the waste from your home. Otherwise, problems occur and recur. “We were at a loss as to what to do to fix it, apart from getting the septic pumped out again, digging up and replacing the trench, or even replacing the whole system – all expensive options,” says Rose. “But then we read in a magazine about Ecocare Activator.”
Cleaners don’t cut it Often confused with traditional septic system cleaning products, Ecocare Activator is much more than a cleaner.
Sound advice about odours “My husband rang and spoke at length to George at Insight Environmental about our problem and, based on that conversation and George’s assurances, we decided to try Ecocare Activator,” says Rose. “We thought, ‘Really, what do we have to lose,’ as it is only a fraction of the cost of the other options we had.” What happened next surprised Mike and Rose, but not George.
Fast forward for the Maynards “We were astounded by the results and how quickly it happened,” says Rose with a smile. “Within a couple of weeks the smell was gone and you could see the area around the trench drying – something that had not happened for twenty years or more.” That was in the winter of 2013. Today, Mike and Rose still have a healthy, odour-free septic system. “We now have a dry paddock,” Mike explains. “We can mow and walk all around the area. “We could not be happier with the results and will continue to use this fabulous product.”
Environmentally safe and odour-free Because Ecocare Activator is safe for you and your garden or paddock, Mike and Rose have no qualms in sharing their story with their friends and neighbours. “We highly recommend anyone with a septic system – with or without issues – to use this great product to fix and prevent septic system problems,” says Mike. And who can blame him when Ecocare Activator’s triple action is not only more effective than the single-action septic system cleaners out there, it’s more costeffective too. If you’re having problems with your septic system, or would simply like to find out more about triple-action Ecocare Activator, call Insight Environmental.

Sharp’s a grand ‘old man’ By KATH GANNAWAY LES Sharp is one of a handful of CFA volunteers around the Yarra Valley who can claim more than 50 years of service to their local brigade. The veteran firefighter that Wandin Fire Brigade members call, with great respect, ‘the old man’ received his 55year CFA Service Medal in October. It’s the latest accolade of many over the years, and recognition of a life-time of dedication, hard work and inspiration. Les followed in his grandfather’s footsteps when he joined the Wandin brigade as a volunteer in 1959. His philosophy is that whatever you do, you don’t settle for the back row. “If you’re going to be in something ... anything, then put your life into it and enjoy it,” he said of his involvement in the CFA. And, incidentally, he takes the same approach with his 30-year involvement in Wandin Rotary Club. Les, now 73, led the brigade as
Les Sharp (centre) with Don Tomkins and Gruyere CFA colleague and friend Don Bigham who has 53-years brigade service. 129998 Captain for 20 years from 1985 to 2005 and has over the years served in a number of brigade roles. He has led the former Killara Group as Group Officer and Group Secretary with value added to his skills as an
already accomplished firefighter and brigade officer to gain formal qualifications in a range of fire-fighting, leadership and rescue work. Fellowship and teamwork rate highly with Les in terms of what being
a firefighter and a brigade member, is all about. He has been part of numerous major Victorian fires starting with the 1962 fires and including Ash Wednesday in ’83 and Black Saturday five years ago. The campaign fires around Victoria and interstate can involve a commitment of weeks rather than days and Les was a strike team leader in a number of them. “I enjoyed the fellowship as well as knowing that the outcomes we were there for were important,” he said. He rates one of the biggest achievements of the brigade as the formation of the Wandin Rescue around 1965, before the SES started up. Les said Wandin was one of the first rescue services in Victoria, trained up to rescue people from car crashes. “We had a year with nine fatalities between Wandin and Lilydale and were trying to get people out of cars with hacksaws and crowbars, and that’s what got us involved in rescue.
“We are all trained up in fire-fighting and rescue and we still do quite a lot of that rescue work,” he said. At the award presentation, CFA District 13 Operations Officer, Don Tomkins, congratulated Les acknowledging his contribution exceptional. Tribute was paid to his “ ... ongoing commitment to the brigade and the CFA over many years without seeking personal reward”. Les is the brigade’s sole Life Member of the CFA and among his many accolades are the prestigious National Medal (1993) and the National Emergency Medal (2013) for his Black Saturday contribution. Would he recommend life as a CFA volunteer to others? He says while it’s an individual choice, particularly in terms of staying involved for as long as he has, but he is also heartened by the young generation of Wandin firies who are a great example of the camaraderie that he has fostered and still enjoys.

- tragically unearthing the personal demons he’d tried so hard to leave behind. 6. Only Lovers Left Alive Lyrical, luxuriously slow and bleakly beautiful, this masterful character study by American auteur Jim Jarmusch is one of the best vampire movies in decades. 5. Calvary - A superbly-written, solemnly dignified work that addresses the Catholic Church’s child abuse scandals, Calvary follows a kind-hearted Irish priest as he ministers to his townsfolk, reconnects with his estranged daughter and deals with a death threat stemming from someone else’s crime. 4. The Double - Jesse Eisenberg stars as Simon James, a hapless clerk who finds his life usurped by his exact doppelganger (but who is confident and ambitious where Simon is meek and complacent). This has some of the year’s most precise control of atmosphere - the hum-drum office setting as surreal and macabre - and portrays mounting, riveting madness like few other films.
3. Gone Girl - Featuring flawless performances, unrelenting suspense, one heck of a twist and an uncomfortably lucid insight into the nature of marriage, this is almost the Holy Grail of thrillers. 2. Snowpiercer - A gutwrenching, clever and gloriously demented sci-fi satire, Snowpiercer depicts a class war inside a never-stopping train that houses the last of humanity in a bitter Ice Age. The premise alone makes it worth checking out, let alone the amazing cast, fascinating world-building, brutal action and compelling narrative depth. 1. These Final Hours - Following a troubled man as he tries to return a lost girl to her father, this is a harrowing yet profoundly uplifting drama about redemption in the face of an apocalypse. Capturing perseverance, revelry, despair and human decency with absolute vivid authenticity, These Final Hours is an exemplary work of Australian cinema. - Seth Hynes

SPECIAL ADVANCE SCREENINGS THIS FRIDAY, SATURDAY & SUNDAY
YARRA VALLEY children will be able to finish their school year with a special celebration this Friday, as Healesville’s main street closes off for the annual Christmas Festival. The festival, which has been organised by the Healesville Chamber of Commerce, will be held between Green Street and Church Street from 4-7pm on Friday 19 December. Event co-ordinator Lisa Hennessy said the event had been completely funded by the Chamber, along with local businesses and residents attending fund-raisers. Journeys on a horse-andcart, a visiting animal farm, jumping castles and rides will all set up along the town’s main shopping strip, and Fa-
ther Christmas himself has been confirmed as the festival’s special guest. The entire event - including photographs with Santa - is free-of-charge, and Ms Hennessy said parents would be able to pick their kids up from school on their last day and come right to the festival. Some of the town’s shops will also be opening late for the festival, giving residents a chance to find a unique lastminute gift before Christmas. Ms Hennessy said the Chamber was expecting thousands of people at the festival, which has drawn large crowds in the three previous years it had run. Another of the event organisers, Vanessa Clothier, told the Mail that the event is designed to be accessible for everyone
in the town, and parents won’t have to be out-of-pocket from the experience. “We want to make it open to disadvantaged families, so their hands aren’t pushed in their pockets for anything,” she said. “We want people to be aware that it’s the kindness of local businesses, and we’re hoping more can give in the future so it can continue.” Ms Clothier said that food and drink would also be available at the festival, including a gingerbread decorating stall put on by Beechworth Bakery. The Healesville Christmas Festival will run from 4-7pm on Friday 19 December, along Nicholson Street (Maroondah Highway) in Healesville between Church and Green streets.
THE STORY THAT INSPIRED THE WORLD TO DANCE Baz Luhrmann’s much-loved hit show STRICTLY BALLROOM THE MUSICAL will open in Melbourne at Her Majesty’s Theatre in January 2015. STRICTLY BALLROOM THE MUSICAL is the inspiring story of a championship ballroom dancer who defies all the rules to follow his heart. This uplifting and courageous tale originated as a stage play that Baz Luhrmann devised with a group of students at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) back in 1984. Readers, get ready to see STRICTLY BALLROOM THE MUSICAL and sing along with the original classics from

10. What We Do In The Shadows - This hilarious, relatable horror comedy styles itself as a documentary about a bunch of dysfunctional vampire flatmates living together in suburban New Zealand. 9. The Zero Theorem Christoph Waltz soars as a neurotic programmer desperate to prove the unthinkable, and his introverted obsession ironically stands out as the only spark of sanity in director Terry Gilliam’s identity-warping, nightmarishly gaudy vision of the future. 8. The Skeleton Twins Equally depressing and charming, Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig make a great misfit pair as siblings who reunite after a long time apart, and come to lean on each other and help accept (and overcome) their mutually disappointing lives. 7. A Walk Among The Tombstones - With Liam Neeson at his sombre best, this is a subtly moving yet deeply unsettling thriller about the barbarism of the present - as Neeson’s character investigates a string of murder-extortions

Rose for centre of safety
FOR extended versions of our Term Time stories, and more photos, go to mail.starcommunity.com.au
A ROSE in the centre courtyard of Seville Primary School will serve as a reminder to students of the strategies they have learnt to keep them safe. School captains Nik and Jasmine were helped by their prep buddies Alannah, Samara and Samuel to plant the Daniel Morcombe Rose as part of the school’s Day for Daniel activities aimed at promoting awareness of keeping kids safe at school and in the community.

Fuelling up for deep thoughts NOW in its second year, Upper Yarra Secondary College’s Brekky @ the Buses is proving a great success. Co-ordinated by Chaplaincy and sponsored by the Yarra Junction Bendigo Bank, the team led by Judy Morris churns out over 160 toasted cheese and tomato sandwiches every Tuesday morning, providing a great start to the day for students.
DIY has reaped benefits for students taking part in the Hands On Learning program at Upper Yarra Secondary College this year. Ten students in Years 7 to 10 have worked one day a week renovating an old house on the school property, learning how to service motor bikes and cars, and fixing old push bikes to donate back to the community. Working with two local artisans the students transformed the house and gained valuable skills into the bargain.

Diplomatic design DIXONS Creek Primary School student Gracie Hodgson will have her work in the hands of the Prime Minister before Christmas after winning her school’s carddesigning competition. Gracie, a Grade 2 student, won a competition to design a Christmas card for Casey MP Tony Smith, and Mr Smith personally congratulated the student on 12 December at the school. As a result of winning the competition, Gracie’s design will be sent to more than 2000 people, including Mr Smith’s parliamentary colleagues, such as Foreign Minister Julie Bishop and Prime Minister Tony Abbott.
Her design was picked by Mr Smith after the top 10 designs were sent to him - five other high-ranking designs will feature on the back of the card as runners up. Dixons Creek Primary School principal Sharon Walker said she was proud of Gracie for winning the competition. “I think it’s fabulous that our federal politicians are acknowledging the work that goes on in small schools,” Ms Walker said. “Gracie is a little girl and it will be something she will remember until the day she dies - the whole school was there, and most of the parents, to celebrate that she won. “We’re very proud.”

Clean up out into the world A SPRING clean at Warburton Primary School reaped benefits at home and abroad for students, parents and staff when Living Fundraisers collected a small mountain of bags containing clothing and household items donated by the school community. Donated goods go to Third World countries to help set up small businesses and in Warburton the money raised goes towards the Stephanie Alexander kitchen-garden program’s new kitchen and dining space.
Wood works for life skills STUDENTS from Launching Place, Millwarra, Wesburn and Gladysdale primary schools go along each week to do woodwork projects at Ben’s Shed in Yarra Junction and, according to Millwarra principal Rod Barnard, they come away with much more than the footstools, egg racks and tool boxes that they make. “Some of the kids don’t have grandparents and the people here are good male role models, which is important for the boys and the girls. “They build relationships with the people here and learn respect, co-operation and good basic skills, as well as getting to take home a special gift for their family,” he said.

Healthy courses A BOOK launch at renowned Yarra Valley restaurant Belle Vedere signed off on two ambitious Year 12 projects with a difference. Little Yarra Steiner School students Hannah Fox and Eve Houghton focused on food and nutrition for their Year 12 Independent Research Project. Hannah produced a health food recipe book and Eve a book based on nutrition. Hannah’s book ‘Healing Foods’ and Eve’s book ‘Food for Thought’ were launched by Bella Vedere chef Gary Cooper in October.
HEALESVILLE High School’s Year 9 students have pitched in to Make a Difference in the world around them, taking up projects to help others and raise awareness of social issues. The year level students planned, developed and took on projects over the year as part of the high school’s Make a Difference program and the teenagers all planned to do exactly that. Director of Student-Wellbeing Lyn Scotchmoor said that projects ranged from raising money for a local family or an overseas organisation such as One Girl, all the way to a silent protest in Melbourne to raise awareness of bullying. The students had their hard work
acknowledged on Wednesday 26 November in a gala evening at the school. Ms Scotchmoor said that the groups each encountered their own trials and hic-cups as they tried to make their plans a reality. One example of this was a group that wanted to assist with the work of the Yarra Valley Railway and aimed to walk from Healesville Railway Station along the train line to the Yarra Glen Station. However, due to the track works and the project coinciding with the Healesville Heritage Festival, the plan fell through and the group instead pitched in to help with the festival.
Healesville High School’s Year 9 students helped to make a difference this year. Picture: CONTRIBUTED Other groups used the gala night as an opportunity to raise awareness of discrimination against the LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual and intersexual) community.
“The program had a wonderful night, with kids, parents and staff coming to celebrate the achievements of the students,” Ms Scotchmoor said.

Ottrey brought it YVCA THE action on the field certainly matched the heat in the YVCA Round 7, week 2 games on Saturday. Many would have predicted Yarra Junction would have struggled to defend their total of 151, compiled on week one against the in-form Warburton-Millgrove. What turned out was a pretty dismal performance by the Burras batsmen as they had no answers for the probing outswing bowling of Terry Ottrey. Ottrey relished the opportunity to exact some revenge on some Eagles defectors, and his figures of 6/32 reduced the home team to a batting mess. Despite a defiant 26 from Ben Lever at the top of the order, and Adam Humphrey’s 33 at the end, the Burras just passed 100. With a team full of young stars reaching their peak, many pencilled in Woori Yallock as the next big challengers to the crown. Chasing the Blues’ 222 from week one was the perfect opportunity for the Tigers to do such. After a tight battle between bat and ball early on the second day, Woori Yallock then rose to the challenge. The Tigers middle order challenged the Blues to think beyond standard tactic of sheer force, as Mick Dwyer’s dogged knock of 73 was well complemented by the attacking contrast of Simon Young (39) and Greg Selby (32). With the visitors needing a further 15 runs with four wickets in hand, the game was turned on its head by an unlikely hero. The recently graduated junior, Brayden Caldwell, stole the show. With three wickets from one over, Caldwell saw the Tigers lose their last four wickets without a run. Seville’s pacemen were spectators as Caldwell (3/26) and fellow spinner Scott Troyhan (2/40) bowled their team to victory. Mount Evelyn will now travel to Woori Yallock after escaping from Hoddles Creek with an ugly win.
The Rovers have been struggling to post a decent score with the bat, and that continued last week with a poor total of 154. With Hoddles Creek sitting at 3/44 overnight, the visitors had to muster a rescue mission with the ball. The early going saw the Derix boys setting themselves for a long day at the crease against some probing bowling. After eeking themselves to 3/68, the home team crashed to lose 7/16 in the space of nine overs, to be rolled for 84. Emerging all-rounder Gareth Fraser (4/12) showed his value with the ball as he combined with the swing of Chris Anderson (3/13) to destroy the Wombats’ tail. DJ Strachan Shield Mount Evelyn 154 (C. Athletes at their best on the track IT WAS a big week for Yarra Ranges Athletics with many highlights, none more so than the two Victorian Best Performances recorded by the mixed age medley relay teams. Yarra Ranges Athletics had five teams competing at the Little Athletics Victoria State Relay Championships, held at Lakeside Stadium on Saturday. Some outstanding performances resulted in two golds and two bronze medals. On top of that the 9-11 girls medley team of Taylah Tillotson, Maddie Laven, Kiara Flavel and Olivia DeVincentis broke the Victorian record they set at the Region relays held in November. Not to be outdone our 12-13 girls medley team of Estelle Peterson, Georgia Laven, Chelsea Thompson and Lily Peacock also broke the state record set in November. Congratulations also to the 12-13 boys medley team of Joel Ryan, Camden Hewitson, Patrick Keating and Harrison Van Duuren for their third place; and to Patrick, Harrison, Lily and Chelsea for an outstanding third place in the under-13 mixed 4x100 relay. In other results the under-10 boys 4x100 team finished 18th. It was a fantastic effort by the young athletes and their parents. Special thanks to Sophie for organising the warm-ups from the first till the last event, and to Malcolm who coached the athletes in the lead up weeks to ensure smooth baton changes - all contributing to a great day. Club athletics was held on a balmy Friday evening. Evening athletics provides for a different atmosphere to morning athletics with the warmer, calmer conditions producing excellent performances. This week’s round was no different with some awesome performance including the under-10 girls 400m where every athlete ran a personal best. Athletics Victoria held the opening round of the AV Knockout. Several athletes took the opportunity to test themselves against the best in their event and age group. Lateisha Wills (under-16) ran 12.35 for 100m, 13.10 90m hurdles, Aiden Pace (under-18) ran 53.87 for 400m, Joe Fishburn (Open men) 1.75 high jump, Dylan Brookes (under-20) 5.72 long jump, Harrison Van Duuren (under-14) 2.26.92 for 800m, Lily Thompson (under-16) 5.08.33 for 1500m and Lachlan Scully (under-18) 4.15.20 for 1500m. Yarra Ranges Athletics’ next round of club athletics is on Friday 18 December. Events start at 5pm with all senior members invited to compete and a special guest expected during the evening. The final round of AV Shield for 2014 will be at Bill Stewart Athletics Track, Burwood (Nunawading Track) on Saturday 20 December from 1pm. New members of all ages and abilities will always be welcomed at Yarra Ranges Athletics - visit the website at www.yarrarangesathletics.org.au for more information, results and training times.

Mason builds a name By RON HOTTES PRESIDENT WARBURTON GOLF CLUB MARK Twain once famously said “Golf is a pleasant walk ruined”. Certainly, plenty of golfers at Warburton would agree with that statement, particularly in the month of November when Warburton Golf Club holds its championships. Many of our regular golfers who played in the various grade events, spoilt their walk by trying to play good golf. But, there were some who played consistent golf, and enjoyed the walk; none more so than our Open Champion Paul Mason. Paul accumulated four very fine rounds, highlighted by an impressive 68 in Round 2. His overall total of 287 was more than enough for him to come out on top. Paul has now won six Open titles at Warburton, equalling the record of runner-up, Andrew Williams. Between them, Paul and Andrew have won 12 of the last 16 years championships. Jon Cross was third, with Jason Kennedy holding down fourth place. B-Grade was the closest finish of the day; and what a finish it was. Ken White led this event for nearly three and a half rounds, but was pipped at the post by the evergreen Geoff Lord. Geoff’s total of 354 was enough to keep veteran golfer, Tex Van Der Kooi, at bay, by the slimmest of margins. Ken was one shot further astern. Eric Slater was the late closer on 360, and could have won another of these titles, had he started better in Round 1. In C-grade, Mick Eldridge

stamped his authority early with a great sub-90 opening round. He continued that form through all four rounds, winning by a margin exceeding 20. Worth noting is that his fourround total would have seen him finish fifth in B-Grade. Wayne Kempton was runner-up and would have been pleased that each of his rounds was an improvement on the last. New member Craig Staggard accumulated 385 over the journey, while current Peninsula District
Golf Association president, MikeDobson, was one behind in fourth place. The Ladies’ Championships were also a one-horse affair with Lynda Dickson romping away with the title with a very impressive 275 over three rounds. Her consistency won it for her. Lynda works hard on her game, and clearly has “bragging-rights“ at the moment in the Dickson household. Trish Eldridge was runner-up, and her last round of Nett 65 was the
lowest recorded nett of the championships. History was created this year when husband and wife team Eldridge each won their respective Nett events. Mick won the Men’s East-Hills trophy with a Nett 207, just pipping Paul-Mason in a tight countback. Trish won the Elva-Eddy Nett trophy with a score of 204. Overall, the championships this year were very successful with over 60 players vying for the trophies and good weather every day.

WILMA ‘Billie’ Dougherty has taken out the top title at Yarra Junction Bowling Club, winning the Ladies Singles Championship Finals earlier this month. Ms Dougherty took on last year’s winner, Fida Rees, on Sunday 7 December in a match that stretched on for three hours and five minutes, with 31 ends. The winner of the match was declared when one of the competitors received 25 points, and 90-year-old Ms Dougherty won all four points on the last end to snatch victory from Ms Rees’ grip. Ron Eke from Yarra Junction Bowling Club wrote that both competitors put up fierce competition. “As you’d tell from the score and the length of the match, the lead passed back and forth with neither lady giving ground,” he wrote in an email to the Mail. “By the end, none of the members who turned out to cheer them on had any fingernails left!”
