Christmas a gift Life and death

SUNDAY marked exactly a year since Lani Brereton’s life changed forever. The Mount Evelyn resident left her parents’ Wandin home with her then nine-year-old daughter Indigo in the passenger seat next to her for what she thought would be a quick trip home. But a drink-driver ruined those plans, crossing onto the wrong side of the road, straight into Lani’s path along Bailey Road, Mount Evelyn. She woke up almost two weeks later in The Alfred hos-

pital with no recollection of the crash scene that left her fighting for her life. Lani died in the air ambulance on way to The Alfred and was revived by paramedics. Even then, no-one was sure she would ever walk or talk again. Emergency services described the crash scene as harrowing; Lani was trapped in the wreckage of the car and had numerous serious injuries. She had a closed brain injury, collapsed lungs, and a broken wrist, knee, foot and leg. Indigo remembers the accident clearly and is still affected

by recollections of the crash. “She describes it as the man forgetting where he was and must have been thinking that he was driving in America,” Lani said. “It took us a while to get her back into a car, but she’s still a nervous passenger.” Luckily Indigo miraculously received only a relatively minor scratch from the crash. As confronting as the crash scene was for emergency crews, nothing could prepare Lani’s father John for what he was about to come across. “Lani actually left something at our house, so we thought we’d

go for a ride and drop it off on the way,” Mr Brereton said. “But we came around the bend and saw this horrific car accident. We recognised the colour of the car, but it was so broken up we couldn’t recognise the make.” Mr Brereton said they soon realised the car belonged to their daughter and she was in a very bad way. “She was bleeding from everywhere possible,” he said. “All of the emergency services, they did such a great job, they are real people doing an amazing job.” He said the family held a

vigil by Lani’s bedside every night of the month she spent in The Alfred. “When she woke up we wanted to be there,” he said. “And we were there.” Lani still has a way to go until she fully recovers, but wants to be a poster girl for those wanting to spend Christmas with their families. “It’s not worth it, no-one forces you to drink-drive,” she said. “It’s so selfish. “This Christmas will be one to remember for me – it’s the one that almost didn’t happen.”

THE bond between Lani Brereton and the emergency crews that saved her will continue for the rest of their lives. Standing hand in hand last week as Lani bravely told her story, the friendships made with paramedic Darelle Barrett and others who first attended the crash scene are obvious. Mount Evelyn firefighter Ken Mitchell, who was the first responder, said the crash was confronting, but the fact Lani’s parents were there allowed the scene to remain calm. “She was in obvious pain, but there was a calmness about it all,” he said. “Many of us thought she might not make it. “Crashes happen all year round, but at Christmas, that’s when families really notice an empty space at the dinner table.” Lani said the emergency services crews had now become part of her family and she couldn’t thank them enough.

Briefly Teens playing with fire POLICE are calling on witnesses after a group of youths were seen lighting bundles of paper outside shops in Lilydale last week. It is believed that up to four youths were seen at 10pm on Monday starting fires in Main Street. While there was no damage to the shops in question, police are keen to speak with those involved. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Police probe car arson MONBULK police are investigating a suspicious fire that destroyed a car in Monbulk’s Main Street over the weekend. Emergency services were called out to a fire inside a Ford sedan parked on the side of Main Street Monbulk at 5.02am on Sunday 14 December. CFA crews managed to push away a nearby car, and contained the fire to the one vehicle, which however was destroyed. Police are treating the fire as suspicious, and are urging anyone with information to contact Monbulk police station on 9756 6266.

THEY’RE often linked to their not so charitable counterparts, but motorcycle riders will begin their annual MRA Melbourne Toy Run from Gembrook this year. Organiser Michael Harvey said that the Toy Run began in 1978 when 40 riders donated toys to the Salvation Army after a short ride from Albert Park. This year the ride will start on Sunday 21 December at 8am. “Within a few years, toy runs were being held by motorcyclists all over Australia and the world,” he said. “The official MRA Melbourne Toyrun for the Salvation Army is being continued by volunteers with the support of the Victorian Motorcycle Council and is now known simply as the “Melbourne Toyrun” with starting points all over Melbourne. Riders will travel from Gembrook, through the Dandenongs, past Lilydale and onto Calder Park Raceway. “It’s free to take part in, and we would love all those involved to give generously to the Salvation Army Christmas Appeal.” Mr Harvey said that the ride was a way to show that not all motorcyclists were the rough and tumble types, and gave them an opportunity to give back to the community.

A LICK of paint and a few metres of mulch can make such a difference. Upwey’s main street had a minor facelift last week, after the team at Project Upwey decided the shelter was looking old and tired. President of Project Upwey Michelle Johnson said that the works started a few weeks ago but people really started to notice once a fresh coat of paint was added on Tuesday. “We’re so lucky, Bunnings and Dulux supplied both paint and staff members to help with the works and it Project Upwey president Michelle Johnson, vice- president has been fantastic to see how Andrew Peterson, Beautification manager Annemarie Brown, much little things like this can Alyson Lutz, Neil Brown, Jason Henningson and Kylie Crocker. change the streetscape.” Picture: MELISSA MEEHAN

A LILYDALE youth will be over $700 out of pocket after being caught with graffiti tools in Monbulk over the weekend. Monbulk police issued the 16-year-old Lilydale youth with a penalty notice and a $738 fine for possessing a graffiti implement. He was near the bus stop in Main Street Monbulk when he was issued with the penalty. No damage or graffiti was recorded at the bus stop.

“One will be the statue in Anzac Place and the other will be inside the RSL hall to help us with the ode.” The works will be carved from wood from the Dandenong Ranges. While an official opening date has not yet been decided, it is believed the works will be completed by January next year. “All three levels of government have provided funding for the total project,” he said.

A STATUE of the Unknown Soldier will be laid at Anzac Place in Emerald as part of the local RSL’s Anzac Walk project. Last week Federal MP Jason Wood visited the Woodhenge Carving Studio in Cockatoo to see how the project was taking shape. Well-known artist Ronnie Sexton has been commissioned to carve the

wooden sculpture of the 3.6 metre high and one metre wide Unknown Soldier. Project manager Tony Schauvel said the Emerald RSL had lots going on in the lead-up to the Centenary of Anzac in 2015, and said everyone was busily working to get the project completed in time. “We’ll have two pieces by Ronnie,” Mr Schauvel said.

AN OLINDA man will face court after being caught driving three times over the legal alcohol limit in Monbulk on Saturday. The 44-year-old man drove through a roadside breath-testing station in Monbulk on Saturday 13 December, where he returned a positive reading for an excessive Blood Alcohol Content (BAC). He was taken to Belgrave police station for an evidentiary breath test, where he recorded a BAC of 0.187 per cent. The legal limit for fullylicensed drivers is 0.05 per cent BAC. The driver’s licence was immediately suspended, and he will be summonsed to court at a later date.

STUDENTS at The Patch Primary School are learning about the environment - and winning awards while they’re at it. The school was presented by the Yarra Ranges Council with the Best HabitAt Action award last week. They won the award for a wildlife corridor planted after extensive planning and research into the best species to choose and most suitable garden for the environment. Council’s Learning for Sustainability officer, Simon Woodland, visited the school last Wednesday to present the award at assembly. He said The Patch Primary had the right approach to environmental education. “The students here are involved in every step of the process - the planning, designing and finally the planting. “It’s a job that could be done really quickly by adults, but it’s beneficial to include the students. They definitely take more away from hands-on experience.” The annual HabitAt School Awards recognise and reward schools for undertaking environmental education projects. The Patch Primary School was presented with a trophy and prize package, courtesy of council and Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater.

Projects like this teach students about conservation as well as helping the local environment.” Schools in the Learning for Sustainability program are sup-

ported by the council to implement environmental education into their curriculum. The program has been internationally recognised for its work in assisting schools to better understand their environment and teaching students about how they can contribute to a more sustainable future. The program is offered free by the council to all schools within the Yarra Ranges.

Mari has lived in different countries and interprets what she has experienced through colourful and semi-abstract images. She is drawn to the flowing curves of the feminine and represents this in threads of colour and sensuous earthen vessels. She has a unique style and view of the world, so do not miss this opportunity to share in her imagination.

Idiots pay the price By JESSE GRAHAM THE FIRST of Victoria Police’s road safety operations has wound up, catching hundreds of drivers breaking the law on Yarra Ranges roads. Operation RAID (Remove All Impaired Drivers) ran across the state from 14 November to 7 December, with Highway Patrols in each Police Service Area (PSA) cracking down on drunk drivers. In the Yarra Ranges, police charged 32 people with drink-driving offences throughout the operation, as well as issuing hundreds of other penalty notices for drivers flouting the law. Speeding drivers were seen in large numbers over the operation period, with 503 drivers caught, as well as 32 disqualified or suspended drivers, 26 unlicensed drivers and 79 unregistered vehicles detected. Thirty four drivers were caught using their mobile phones while driving, while 30 were caught in moving cars without seatbelts and 19 drivers disobeyed traffic

signs or signals, such as red lights and stop signs. Four cars were also impounded in the operation, which was the first out of the four-part Summer Stay campaign being run by Victoria Police around the holiday period. Talking to the Mail earlier in the month about the campaign, Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol Sergeant John Morgan said he was “astounded” by the number of drivers using mobile phones behind the wheel. Sgt Morgan said the penalty for using a mobile phone while driving was a $443 fine and four demerit points, while not wearing a seatbelt results in fines and demerit points for the driver, as well as fines for offending passengers over 16 years old. “If you’ve got a P-plater who is not wearing a seatbelt and using their phone, they’ve lost their licence,” he said. “My advice for everybody out there is ‘you are not allowed to use your mobile

phone at all’.” In the Cardinia PSA, fewer drivers were caught drunk behind the wheel, with 14 drivers charged - less than half that of the Yarra Ranges. Twenty drivers were caught driving while disqualified or suspended, while 19 unlicensed drivers and 80 unregistered vehicles were spotted by police. More people were caught speeding compared to the Yarra Ranges area, with 716 drivers caught. Meanwhile, 20 drivers were charged with mobile phone offences, 22 people were caught without seatbelts, 18 people were found disobeying signs or signals and three cars were impounded. Operation Breakup began on 8 December, immediately after Operation RAID finished, and will focus on reducing road trauma at the time of many Christmas break-up parties. As of Friday 12 December, the road toll stood at 240 - only two road deaths down from 2013’s toll of 242.

Firies help keep Santa on the run By MELISSA MEEHAN SANTA will travel in a different type of sleigh as he joins the Upper Ferntree Gully CFA on their annual Santa Run. Mr Claus himself will help the volunteers dressed in yellow deliver sweet treats to those in Upper Ferntree Gully and Carrington Estate in Lysterfield on Sunday 21 December from 9.30am. Brigade captain Peter Smith said

Santa and his fire truck would visit every street in Upper Gully. “I’ve been in the brigade for 42 years, and every year that I’ve been here we’ve done the Santa Run,” Capt Smith said. “The only difference is that we used to do it on Christmas Eve but it was hard to get everyone here because they want to spend time with their families, and it’s a busy time for Santa.”

Letters Keeping Cockatoo COCKATOO Creek is a body of water that runs through the township. It is supposed to be a place where people can walk with children. Dogs love to paddle. It is supposedly pristine water - supposed to be idyllic - now it appears to be a rubbish dump. Falling branches and garbage added to the mix, not a pleasant place to go now. A little while ago a much-loved pet fell into the creek and because he was deaf and blind and 18 years old, he could not get out. Sadly, he died and it took two grown men to get him out. If, like me, your pets are your children, imagine the grief this caused. I believe the council was approached and nothing was done, so the good people of Cockatoo pulled together as they always do, like they did with the kinder and the Vodafone tower - goodness, aren’t we a resilient lot. They met up and started to clean up the creek when, lo and behold, they were told in no uncertain terms to cease work or the police would be called. This person did not say who

Come climb on the sleigh.“ He opened some sacks and the birds climbed inside, Then off through the roof they went. Oh, what a ride! Time after time he returned in his sleigh ’Til every young bird was transported away, They flew over mountains and flew over sea To a beautiful place where they’d always be free. And next day when the farmer threw open the door He was shocked and amazed by the sight that he saw Only feathers remained in that shed so immense, Was it magic? Or ghosts? It just didn’t make sense. And so pleased was old Santa with what he had done He decided he’d make this a regular run. The farmer? Well he was so scared of the ghosts, That now he grows soy beans for tofu nut roasts.

There’s been some obviously memorable stories - Black Saturday, Tecoma McDonald's, the Olinda Pool and others that will always stick at the back of my mind, including my story on forced adoption for single mothers with then Yarra Junction resident June Smith. Crackdown on fire hazard properties By BEN CAMERON

Rayma, Tahlia, Emily, Lilli, Damon, Brooke, Alyce, Lily and Andrea are working to stop bullying. Picture: KATHRYN BERMINGHAM

Bullies on notice By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM YEAR 8 students at Monbulk College will not be bystanders to bullying. Students at the school are fighting the epidemic with the help of a large bulletin board erected outside St George’s Anglican Church. Having designed the board themselves, the students hope it will gain the attention of passers-by and cause them to stop and think about bullying.

Home group teacher Sandra Miller said she was thrilled with the efforts of her students, and that everything possible must be done to stop bullying. “I am very proud of my Year 8 class and the commitment they have made to this cause. “This is a good time to show that the Dandenong Ranges are not going to put up with this anymore.” Ms Miller and seven of her students

attended a church service to explain the principles behind the board. She says the response from the community has been phenomenal. “The students were overwhelmed with the feedback they received from the community and it has made them more determined to stop bullying,” she said. The board and all costs associated were donated by Fletcher’s Real Estate in Monbulk.

SEVENTY-FIVE clean-up notices have been issued to residents by Cardinia Shire Council in just a few weeks following the initial stages of a shire-wide fire hazard property inspection program. Council Emergency Management officer Glynn Owen said nearly 5000 properties across the hills area, including Emerald, Upper Beaconsfield and parts of Cockatoo, had been inspected for warning signs already which could pose “a risk to life or property”. Inspections began several weeks ago. “That number (75) is continuing to grow by the day,” he said. “We’re working through the hills (area) at the moment. We’re hitting it pretty hard between now and Christmas. It’s a fair bit of work involved. “At the expiry of a fire prevention notice, we send officers out to reinspect to ensure compliance. “We’re looking for long grass, fine fuels and overgrown weeds and vegetation.” The program will inspect all of the shire’s nearly 38,000 properties. “We sent out a pre (fire) season awareness letter to 3500 properties which have either been problems in the past or have vacant land ... advising we’re starting our

inspections and they should consider their property maintenance,” he said. The shire issued around 650 fire prevention notices last year and sent out around 70 forced clearance infringements, the next step in the enforcement process. “That’s (forced clearance infringements) the number we want low, it means people are complying and so we’re not issuing fines,” he said. Council has also confirmed its three Neighbourhood Safer Places - Places of Last Resort for the fire season. The three locations are the oval and car park at Emerald’s Worrell Reserve, Mountain Road Sports Complex inside the basketball stadium in Cockatoo, and the car park at Gembrook Community Centre. However, Council Resilience and Recovery coordinator David Lane said residents should not rely on them. “I almost think that title should be switched around, because it is a place of last resort,” he said. “The messaging is clearly around ‘leave early on days of high heat’. “People in high risk areas should be having plans in place and leaving their property early, rather than leaving it until the last minute.”

Overdose of scientific pride By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM SARAH Camm is a tall poppy, and a proud one at that. The Mater Christi College student was selected for one of 10 places in the University of Melbourne’s science acceleration program. The Victorian Growing Junior Tall Poppies program aims to encourage talented Year 10 students by developing their curiosity and love of science. Sarah spent a week at the university, touring labs, listening to guest speakers and participating in a number of science activities. One session involved brainstorming ideas to implement in schools. “Ideas ranged from interschool conferences to myth debunking clubs. From this, I have designed several projects for Mater Christi in 2015,” Sarah said. The program also includes a year of contact with a science mentor. Sarah said that the experience had been beneficial for her academic development in the field

of science. “The immersion week was a raging success. I met some truly inspirational scientists, made some outright awesome, likeminded friends, experienced what university is like and had a nonstop brain workout that I’ll cherish.” School principal Mary FitzGerald said the school supported all its students to extend their education through a range of activities and programs. “We encourage girls to pursue all kinds of learning and challenges and Sarah’s ability to act on her passions is a credit to her and reflects the amazing opportunities available to girls.” Also actively involved in music and social justice, Sarah hopes future Year 10 students will take advantage of the opportunity in coming years. “I would definitely recommend this program to Year 10 2015 students who are passionate about science and ready for a challenge.”

Santa makes late entry SANTA will be preparing for his upcoming all-nighter with a late night appearance at Westfield Knox this week. The event will launch a new partnership between Westfield and Jean Paul Gaultier @ the National Gallery of Victoria. Shoppers taking advantage of late night opening hours will be able to

take a break in a designated JPG area where drinks from Treasury Wines are on offer. What’s more there is also the chance to take a photo with JPG Santa. Santa will be visiting from 8-11pm on Thursday 18 December. Information about Westfield’s opening hours over Christmas are available at www. westfield.com.au/knox/hours.

CFA bags eight awards

Sarah Camm. 132325

EMERALD Community House and CFA have been recognised for their efforts in preparing the town for the bushfire season. The annual Fire Awareness Awards celebrate a variety of projects that reduce the effect of fires in Victoria. Held in Melbourne on Friday 5 December, CFA Chief Officer Euan Ferguson said that it was pleasing to see the hard work of CFA members across the state rewarded. “Overall, CFA groups received eight awards on the night including some which were partnerships with other local organisations. “These awards are a representation of the dedication and innovation demonstrated by our members across the state.” The awards celebrate projects that focus on any type of fire, including structural fires and bushfires.

Emerald Community House and Emerald CFA Brigade were the major winners on the night, taking out the Community Preparedness Award for bushfire planning workshops designed for childcare parents. Mr Ferguson said the project provided vital information for parents in case of a bushfire. “The group developed compulsory fire safety workshops for the parents of children attending a local childcare centre. “This project will help to educate locals on their fire risk, and give them essential tools to help protect themselves in the event of fire.” The Fire Awareness Awards are a joint initiative of the MFB, CFA and DEPI. The community groups also took home the $10,000 RACV Insurance Award for Excellence.

Top 10 best 2014 movies - what a year it was 10. What We Do In The Shadows This hilarious, relatable horror comedy styles itself as a documentary about a bunch of dysfunctional vampire flatmates living together in suburban New Zealand. 9. The Zero Theorem - Christoph Waltz soars as a neurotic programmer desperate to prove the unthinkable, and his introverted obsession ironically stands out as the only spark of sanity in director Terry Gilliam’s identitywarping, nightmarishly gaudy vision of the future. 8. The Skeleton Twins - Equally

depressing and charming, Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig make a great misfit pair as siblings who reunite after a long time apart, and come to lean on each other and help accept (and overcome) their mutually disappointing lives. 7. A Walk Among The Tombstones - With Liam Neeson at his sombre best, this is a subtly moving yet deeply unsettling thriller about the barbarism of the present - as Neeson’s character investigates a string of murder-extortions - tragically unearthing the personal demons he’d tried so hard to leave behind. 6. Only Lovers Left Alive - Lyrical,

luxuriously slow and bleakly beautiful, this masterful character study by American auteur Jim Jarmusch is one of the best vampire movies in decades. 5. Calvary - A superbly-written, solemnly dignified work that addresses the Catholic Church’s child abuse scandals, Calvary follows a kindhearted Irish priest as he ministers to his townsfolk, reconnects with his estranged daughter and deals with a death threat stemming from someone else’s crime. 4. The Double - Jesse Eisenberg stars as Simon James, a hapless clerk who finds his life usurped by his exact doppelganger (but who is confident

and ambitious where Simon is meek and complacent). This has some of the year’s most precise control of atmosphere - the hum-drum office setting as surreal and macabre - and portrays mounting, riveting madness like few other films. 3. Gone Girl - Featuring flawless performances, unrelenting suspense, one heck of a twist and an uncomfortably lucid insight into the nature of marriage, this is almost the Holy Grail of thrillers. 2. Snowpiercer - A gut-wrenching, clever and gloriously demented scifi satire, Snowpiercer depicts a class war inside a never-stopping train that

houses the last of humanity in a bitter Ice Age. The premise alone makes it worth checking out, let alone the amazing cast, fascinating worldbuilding, brutal action and compelling narrative depth. 1. These Final Hours - Following a troubled man as he tries to return a lost girl to her father, this is a harrowing yet profoundly uplifting drama about redemption in the face of an apocalypse. Capturing perseverance, revelry, despair and human decency with absolute vivid authenticity, These Final Hours is an exemplary work of Australian cinema.

THE MONBULK Cricket Club had a massive weekend both on and off the field. It started on Friday night with two under-11 and two under-10 games as well as the hugely popular Milo program. On Saturday, our seconds, thirds and under-13s all had great wins, highlighted by Funky Defina’s 7/31 to help the twos to a big win. Sunday saw the Monbulk Cricket Club host the Monbulk Fun Run. Thanks to everyone in our wonderful community for either running (especially all of the kids), walking, sponsoring, supporting or assisting in some way. Monbulk MP James Merlino was on hand to present medals to the winners - Chris Rak (8km - Open), Susie Wilson (8km - Open), Josh Rak (8km under-18), Dana Dekkers (8km - under-18), Scott Bennett (4km winner), Kiara Flavell (4km winner). Special thanks to the Monbulk Bendigo Bank for their support of this event. Next weekend, most teams finish the year with a one-day game except, the under-13s who have a bye and the under10s and under-11s who have already finished for their Christmas break. Next Saturday night (20 December) is also the club's Christmas party for the whole club (Milo, juniors, seniors and families). Come and watch the first XI take on Belgrave during the afternoon followed by a 6.30pm barbecue feast and a 7.30pm visit from Santa.

Milo Cricket at Monbulk WITH more than 100 kinder to late primary school kids registered, Monbulk Cricket Clubs Milo program is again enjoy-

ing a very successful Milo In2 Cricket season. The 12-week program success is underpinned by the five group coaches and the active involvement of parents and grandparents helping with the on-field program and evening barbecue. With the Monbulk under-10s in the middle of the ground and the green, yellow and pink Milo colours surrounding them, the Monbulk Recreational Reserve is a hive of activity each Friday evening. “It’s all about kids being active, having fun, fostering sportsmanship and social skills. From toddlers to early teens, boys and girls, Monbulk Cricket Club feels it has a community responsibility to promote in kids both social and physical aspects of growing up,” Monbulk Cricket Club president Chris Defina said. “The Milo program is the perfect pathway before playing Junior cricket, in which we have seven teams this season - we are very proud of our Milo and Junior program.“

THE game at Emerald Golf Club last Saturday was South African fourball. Played in pairs, the score on each hole is calculated by multiplying the two stableford points scores together. The pairs were chosen and the contest began with Peter Glasscock (15) and Jeff Marsh (26) showing the other teams a clean pair of heels with some stunning golf. Their joint score or 92 points had them well out in front and smiling in the afterglow of a great score. Steve Town (16) and Ross Martin (13) came in next with an excellent 84 points. A countback had to be

slapped across the next best totals with two teams on 83. Brian McCoy (31) and Mark Starick (11) won that contest. Because there was an uneven number of players Starick also combined with Ian Scott (26) for third place. The Stockdale and Leggo nearest-the-pin on the fourth went to Peter Clowes, Mark Starick on the seventh, Ross Martin the 12th and John Fisher was nearest on the 13th and he also picked up the pro pin drachma on the 18th. The best of the ladies’ pairing were Irene Cranston and Davina MacKey who combined brilliantly to amass an impressive total to eclipse all others.

Wednesday’s Old and Flabby Golf (OFG) was a stroke event competing for the delicious Henley Hill Cab Sav. Moss Fuller (21) came in with his best score ever to card 80 off the beater for a very impressive net 59. Scoring was prolific with John Piggott (21) next with 64, Ken Hill (13) 66 and a swish of golfers on 67. These included Kevin Miller (36), Ken Sumsion (27), Graeme Fergus (23), Bob Kennedy (20) and Geoff Whittaker. Next Saturday sees the annual Greenkeepers Revenge round in the stableford format. There is a suspicion that Ben, the new greenkeeper, might be particularly vengeful.

Elite squad scoops title bouts By JESSE GRAHAM LILYDALE boxers scooped Australian titles in a national fight night late last month in Hobart, with a newcomer to the sport topping the competition after just one year. Three boxers from Lightning Fight Centres in Lilydale fought in the Australian Boxing Titles in Hobart from Thursday 26 November to Saturday 29 November, accompanying six other Victorian boxers to the bouts. Each of the three boxers were awarded the Australian titles in their fields, including Tiff Van Horick, who won the Female Heavyweight Division, Sacha Peters, 17, who

won the Lightweight Championship and Jordan Lundh, 20, who won the Australian Cruiserweight title. Lightning Fight Centres’ trainer, former Middleweight Boxing Champion and World Kickboxing Champion and Jordan’s father, Nick Lundh, said Victoria had a small team with big results. “Victoria was only able to send a team of nine boxers, which was the smallest team at the titles and other states, such as Queensland and Tasmania, had over 60 boxers on their teams,” Nick said. He said the rest of the Victorian team received six gold, one silver and two bronze medals to accom-

pany the other three fighter’s titles. The competition was fierce over the three days, with 20-30 fights each day. Nick said each of the Lilydale fighters’ titles marked the latest in a long line of achievements, with the three all taking out regional titles throughout the year. He said Jordan was a relative newcomer to the sport, after starting fighting around Christmas in 2013 - since then, he has taken part in 17 fights. Nick said that Peters would be looking to turn to professional boxing when he turns 18 in July 2015.

Bears rack up the wins By STEVE BROWN FTGDCA THE BASIN recorded its seventh successive victory after defeating Upwey Tecoma by 48 runs in Norm Reeves Shield action at the weekend. Set 288 to win, Upwey stumbled early losing the first four wickets with just 42 runs until the experienced Michael Hewitt (57) formed partnerships with Jake Evans and Damian Berenato to add some respectability to the scoreboard. Basin skipper Scott Vozzo was back to his best, off the long run, with 3/60 off 21 overs but it was Matthew Heskes who inflicted the early damage - returning 3/52 from 22. The Bears are chasing their first Division One pennant since 1947 and after seven rounds they are assured of playing finals action, while the Tigers dropped to sixth place on the table. Knoxfield gave Knox Gardens a fright defending only 140 as the Falcons struggled to get the points winning by three wickets in a low-scoring affair. After losing the best opening combination of Butcher and Small early on, Knox Gardens dug in with contributions from Steve Alderton, Rhys Marget and Scott McInerney (39 not out) to climb into fourth place on the ladder.

Knights fast bowler Scott McKenzie toiled hard for 2/31 from 22 overs. Monbulk (223) could not hold Johnson Park who was 1/7 overnight. The Sharks coasted to victory losing only three wickets for the day as not out batsmen Martin Weightman 57 and premiership captain Andrew Devenish 83, consolidated their position in the four. At Kings Park, Upper Gully was never a threat chasing 313 set by neighbours Ferntree Gully. The Kings were bundled out for just 147 with Jarrod Bradley and Luke Bowyer sharing the wickets. The Gully Blues are only a game and a half outside the four despite a poor start to the season. Belgrave batted well at home to Eildon Park scoring 242 in pursuit of an unlikely 370. Simon Hill fell for 67 and Matt Johnson and Aaron Daniel both got starts however the task was made more difficult with the return to form of medium pacer Mick Sinclair who took 3/25. Athletes at their best IT WAS a big week for Yarra Ranges Athletics with many highlights, none more so than the two Victorian Best Performances recorded by the mixed age medley relay teams. Yarra Ranges Athletics had five teams competing at the Little Athletics Victoria State Relay Championships, held at Lakeside Stadium on Saturday. Some outstanding performances resulted in two golds and two bronze medals. On top of that the 9-11 girls medley team of Taylah Tillotson, Maddie Laven, Kiara Flavel and Olivia DeVincentis broke the Victorian record they set at the Region relays held in November. Not to be outdone our 12-13 girls medley team of Estelle Peterson, Georgia Laven, Chelsea Thompson and Lily Peacock also broke the state record set in November. Congratulations also to the 12-13 boys medley team of Joel Ryan, Camden Hewitson, Patrick Keating and Harrison Van Duuren for their third place; and to Patrick, Harrison, Lily and Chelsea for an outstanding third place in the under-13 mixed 4x100 relay. In other results the under-10 boys 4x100 team finished 18th. It was a fantastic effort by the young athletes and their parents. Special thanks to Sophie for organising the warm-ups from the first till the last event, and to Malcolm who coached the athletes in the lead up weeks to ensure smooth baton changes - all contributing to a great day. Club athletics was held on a balmy Friday evening. Evening athletics provides for a different atmosphere to morning athletics with the warmer, calmer conditions producing excellent performances. This week's round was no different with some awesome performance including the under-10 girls 400m where

Runners competing in the Little Athletics Victoria State Relay Championships on Sunday. Picture: CONTRIBUTED every athlete ran a personal best. Athletics Victoria held the opening round of the AV Knockout. Several athletes took the opportunity to test themselves against the best in their event and age group. Lateisha Wills (under-16) ran 12.35 for 100m, 13.10 90m hurdles, Aiden Pace (under-18) ran 53.87 for 400m, Joe Fishburn (Open men) 1.75 high jump, Dylan Brookes (un-

der-20) 5.72 long jump, Harrison Van Duuren (under-14) 2.26.92 for 800m, Lily Thompson (under-16) 5.08.33 for 1500m and Lachlan Scully (under-18) 4.15.20 for 1500m. Extras prove costly Olinda Junior Cricket Club UNDER 14 BOWLING first in perfect conditions in Saturdays firstdayer, the radar was again a little off from the bowlers. A lot of work has gone into this area in recent weeks at training, but the team again gave away a lot of extras. Wickets were spread evenly and again the fielding was of a very good standard. In reply, Olinda got themselves into a solid position after the loss of some early wickets. Ted Box (20) and Pat Seymour (13) combined for a timely 46 run stand. With 10 overs to go, the team needed to score at just under five runs per over, and ended up falling five runs short. A great game of cricket provided by both teams. Olinda 9/91 vs Heathmont 5/96. UNDER 10 IT WAS a very busy night as St Andrew's Cricket Club hosted the RDCA under-10 round-robin tournament. With three games on offer, as well as a free snag and drink, it made for a terrific night which all the kids enjoyed. Our thanks to all the organisers for all their efforts.
