■ Feeling the squeeze, Tooradin calls for town master plan...
Upgrade plea By BRIDGET SCOTT MEMBERS of a seaside town that has outgrown its facilities are lobbying council to implement a master plan which would see parts of the suburb receive a total upgrade. User groups in Tooradin are fed up with out-of-date facilities which have got them feeling left behind from other parts of the City of Casey. President of the Tooradin Cricket Club Ricky Holland said the City of Casey came to Tooradin about 13 months ago with a desire to create a master plan for the area. He said they had gone through this process in the
past with little or no success, and their facilities had not been updated. “We feel like we are a little left out here in Tooradin,” he said. “We are in the back corner of Casey and the back corner of the state and federal seat too.” “We seem to be in everyone’s back corner.” City of Casey manager Sport and Leisure Richard Amon advises that council is developing a plan for open spaces at Tooradin and Rutter Park Reserves, in consultation with the community including sporting clubs and other stakeholders.
He said there was no single overarching master plan for Tooradin. He also added that projects listed in the plans were being scoped in line with council’s standards as per the Leisure Facilities and Development Plan, and would assist in supporting participation in sport outcomes. Mr Holland said plenty of the groups in Tooradin had outgrown their current grounds, including the tennis club and football club. “We’ve outgrown what facilities there are at the main reserve,” he said. He also added that the cricket club, which has five senior teams and six ju-
nior teams, operates out of a tin shed donated to them by the fire brigade many years ago. The action group lobbying for the upgrades includes members from the angling club, cricket club, tennis club, football club, netball club. Some representatives met with council last week in a general purpose meeting where they put their case forward. Mr Amon from council said that following this, council resolved for a report to be prepared by February 2015 which would address material raised by club representatives. Council’s current capital works

The following projects will be considered in council’s future capital works program; Tooradin Tennis Club Construction of Tennis Pavilion, Rutter Park Reserve Pavilion Upgrade and Tooradin Recreation Reserve Playing surface upgrade. The scope and timing for these projects will be reviewed when the plan is finalised in early 2015, and be considered for funding as part of the next council budget process.

You may remember Council adopted the Endeavour Hills Community Precinct Master Plan in July this year. Plans for stage one of these works are well under way.
There are a lot of exciting developments in the Four Oaks Ward pipeline, one of which includes the Heatherton Road Mixed Use Precinct Development Plan.
It has been a pleasure to SFQSFTFOU .BZmFME 8BSE throughout 2014 and I look forward to working with you all in the New Year.
A concept is being developed for the town square and kiosk and Council is working towards a mOBM EFTJHO BOE ESBXJOHT SFBEZ for construction tendering.
This critical plan has been revised, and will be on exhibition in the New Year for the community to review.
It is wonderful to see a project so close to my heart and so needed in the community start becoming a reality. 8IFO NZ TPO XBT mSTU diagnosed, I learned of an inclusive play space in Hawthorn and hoped that one day, we would have an inclusive play space here in Casey. We turned the sod for Livvi’s Place, at Marriott Waters on 3 December 2014, coinciding with the International Day of People with a Disability. The inclusive playspace will provide much needed infrastructure for children with a disability, their friends and their families. I am very proud of Bec Ho and Therese Howell from Touched by Olivia Foundation, and Council for committing to this project, and the wonderful supporters and sponsors who have so generously contributed. Touched by Olivia Foundation have raised almost $200,000 through grants, corporate and community donations. The playspace is expected to open in April 2015, and progress can be followed on Facebook; www.facebook.com/groups/ GSJFOETPnJWWJTQMBDFDBTFZ Congratulations to Touched by Olivia Foundation who were recently awarded a National Disability Award in the category ‘Improving Inclusive and Accessible Communities’.
I will keep you updated on the progress of this exciting plan. At a Council meeting on 2 December, Cr Crestani and I raised an item of urgent business SFMBUJOH UP B mSF BU UIF &OEFBWPVS Hills Secondary College stadium. We have requested a report and subsequent strategy be developed by early 2015 regarding; activation of the site, provision of extra space for community use, and prevention of vandalism and anti-social behaviour. The report will detail Council’s progress regarding two soccer pitches on the site. We have also requested Federal and State Members of Parliament be made aware of the community’s safety concerns at the site. I hope you all enjoy a Merry Christmas with your loved ones and I look forward to representing you in 2015.
The Plan will improve the Heatherton Road precinct, by: Providing for medium to higher density housing close to existing services. Creating long term job opportunities within the activity centre. Considering ways to minimise impact on surrounding residential properties. Linking existing retail services to B GVUVSF SFUBJM BOE PGmDF IFBSU Improving connectivity and accessibility within the precinct. Creating an important visual gateway to the suburb of Endeavour Hills at the corner of Heatherton Road and Hallam North Road. Keep an eye out on Council’s website for your opportunity to view this development plan. As we near the end of the year, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all Casey residents, a very Merry Christmas and a happy and safe New Year.
With the warm days and balmy nights, summer is a great time to get outdoors and participate in some of the wonderful community activities on offer. Tune up your singing voice and come along to the Cranbourne Carols on Saturday 20 December, from 6.00 pm at Lawson Poole Recreation Reserve, 101 Lesdon Avenue, Cranbourne. Nightmare neighbours By BRIDGET SCOTT A DWELLING in Cranbourne, which a neighbourhood has been led to believe will be a boarding house, has residents talking, but not for the right reasons. Construction is underway on a piece of land along Cranbourne Drive, and despite a blackout of information, these residents are determined to get to the bottom of it before it gets on top of them. As many as 10 Cranbourne locals wish to object to the building
which they have been led to believe will be a boarding house, for whom, they don’t know. Concerned about how it will affect the value of their houses, one resident of 29 years, Jill Thompson, said depending on who her new neighbours would be, she might put her house on the market. The angry group said construction started recently after the demolition of a house more than three weeks ago. According to some residents, builders had a permit for a nine-
unit dwelling but their information stopped there. Lisa Veitch said the Casey Council had told different people different stories, and was concerned about who might come to live next door to her and her two young children. Manager for Planning at Casey Council Duncan Turner advised that no planning or building permits have been issued by council for the construction works at this location. “A building permit has been issued by a private building surveyor. The private building surveyor is re-
lying on a State Government planning provision that provides an exemption from local planning approval and public notification,” he said. The News was informed that private building surveyors had issued the permit for this land. The residents said workers were always on site early each morning, and their main concern was not knowing what was being built. They have also contacted Cranbourne West MP Jude Perera, who was unavailable for comment.
Three duped as drive-away ‘buyer’ fails the trust test A THIEF using a false name is accused of stealing three cars in Casey after duping their owners into letting him drive vehicles they are trying to sell. Police allege a man using the alias Craig Watson reponds to for sale notices. Police believe he uses a false ID, a photocopy of a recipt for a probationary licence.
After winning the trust of the vehicle’s owner, he asks to test drive the car. During the test drive the thief deliberately causes a minor accident. When the vehicle owner gets out to inspect the damage, the crook drives off leaving the hapless owner by the side of the road. The missing vehicles have all been Toyota Corollas.
The victims, in Narre Warren and Cranbourne, were fleeced of their cars between 4 and 13 December. The thief is described as tall with black hair, possibly of Lebanese origin. None of the cars have been recovered. Anyone with information can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

THIS is the final edition of the News for 2014. It has been a year of highs and lows, triumph and tragedy. Stories that have made the front page this year include the growing scourge of the drug ice, the stabbing of teenager Ben Phillips outside a Cranbourne party, a horror car accident on the South Gippsland Highway involving four teenagers, the annual White Ribbon campaign to stamp out family violence, calls for calm after the shooting of a teen terror suspect and the declaration by Councillor Rafal Kaplon that he was gay in the face of moves to cut programs at the City of Casey designed to increase awareness about different sexual orientations. No matter what the story, we thank those individuals and organisations who have shared their stories, thoughts, insights and feelings in the pages of the News this year. The first edition of the News for 2015 will be published on Thursday 15 January. In it we take a look back at the people and events that made news in 2014 and also reveal the person of the year. The team at the News wish all our readers a merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year. - Narelle Coulter, News Editor

Letters Budget bumps IN a letter to the editor (Vote Against Rate Rises, News, 9 October) I expressed great concern about the waste of ratepayers’ money by Casey Council on roundabouts and traffic islands. Since then I’ve been on a bus tour (843, 845, 849 and 861) in Four Oaks Ward, Endeavour Hills. I was terribly shocked to see the size of some of those roundabouts, most of them were painted and having an artistic design on top. What a waste of public money! Some of the drivers I spoke with told me that many of those roundabouts constitute a hurdle to their driving safely. On my bus tour, I also noticed that Casey council has embarked on another frenzied project that wastes ratepayers’ money. I mean the installation of speed humps. Nobody can argue against the importance or ne-

cessity of speed humps in some local areas. But the sizes, as well as the number of speed humps that are placed on a single road by Casey council is alarming. I have read that in the financial year 20132014 the City of Casey installed a total of 48 speed humps at a cost of $493,692.60. In the current financial year 2014-2015 $800,000 had been allocated in the City of Casey budget for local traffic management. At this point in time the expenditure on speed humps in 2014-2015 is anticipated to be approximately $400,000. This is pure madness. Much of that money could be used to reduce rates. Many people know that speed humps in some areas have been removed after protests by local residents. Such protests cite a lack of any consultation as one factor. As ratepayers, we would like to know if Casey council has had any consultation with the fleeced ratepayers before spending money on such a never-ending project. Eliezer Francois, Endeavour Hills.

NOW that the state election is over, serious questions must be asked of current Casey councillors and failed Liberal Party political aspirants Geoff Ablett, Amanda Stapledon and Susan Serey. Why the rush to get to Spring Street? Do they think so little of council or local ratepayers that they’re seeking to jump ship after only two years? I know in response we’ll hear talk of "well, my experience in council makes me ideally placed to represent the electorate, I have a record of achievement etc etc". Well, this is just self-serving twaddle. Being elected to council is an honour and privilege and brings with it an ethical obligation to put the interests of local ratepayers first. However, seeking to cut and run half-way through a term of office is hardly consistent with this view and reflects poorly on the councillors involved. After all, I don’t recall seeing or hearing anything during the last council election about them seeking to leave after only two years. If they had, we could reasonably expect that ratepayers would have thought very carefully about voting into office someone who is not committed to serving out a whole term. There is nothing wrong with aspiring to higher office, however there’s a time and place for everything, and residents in Balla Balla, Edrington and Mayfield are entitled to ask whether councillors Ablett, Stapledon and Serey are as committed as they should be to looking after ratepayers’ interests. Unfortunately, their involvement in this election mirrors the ill-judgement of the City of Casey as a whole in erecting ‘Casey sup-

ports East West Link’ signs across the municipality. It is my earnest hope that council’s support for this project has not been influenced by political considerations, however to say it looks and smells bad is an understatement of major proportions. Foolish and misguided actions such as this will only exacerbate council’s poor standing in the eyes of many in the community. This is not the fault of Casey’s dedicated staff, many of whom do an excellent job under difficult circumstances. Rather, it is a failure of leadership at an elected and executive level that is doing most to harm council’s interests and that of the communities it purports to represent. Karl Liebich, Carrum Downs.
Rates fightback I WOULD like to thank the many concerned ratepayers and residents who turned up to my house for our first meeting to start up the Casey Ratepayers Association on Saturday 6 December. If you are not aware we have formed a committee to fight for cheaper rates and to make Casey council accountable for doing so. We will be holding many open meetings over the coming year commencing in 2015 in which you will be invited to come along and have your say. With our question time you will not have to submit a form, nor will it be read out at our meetings you will be able to come along and

Cr Rosario is often ‘invited’ by groups to a variety of events and, yes, many do have “photo opportunities” but attending such events is part of a councillor’s role. Personally, I would rather they turn up and have their photo taken by the organisers than not turn up at all. Tony O’Hara, Hampton Park.

The old Cranbourne Swimming complex became dumping Pictures: JEFF BAILEY grounds this year. 132670 wanted to determine who was responsible for this as it had become a “real eyesore.”
The old complex also appeared to have become the victim of vandalism and break-ins.

AN EYESORE along Grant Street in Cranbourne was finally tended to after 12 months of looking like a tip. Cranbourne man Jeff Bailey was fed up with the state of the area behind the old Cranbourne swimming pool, which he labelled as a ‘Casey disgrace’. Mr Bailey, who lives within walking distance of the complex, said the problem had deteriorated over the past 12 months. “Rubbish was only getting worse and worse,” he said. “It has increased over the past six months and the building has been in bad repair too.” Mr Bailey said it was a long time before anyone took some responsibility for the problem. The City of Casey Council had reportedly told Mr Bailey that the problem came under the jurisdiction of the Department of Primary Industries, which did not provide comment before deadline. On Tuesday afternoon after a long battle, the rubbish was cleared from the area, much to the surprise of Mr Bailey. He was told that volunteers from the Recreation Reserve may have tidied up the area. Prior to this, he said everyone had “run for cover.” The resident of 35 years

Heads up for service By LACHLAN MOORHEAD HOLT MP Anthony Byrne visited Fountain Gate Headspace last week to welcome the beginning of the facility’s services. The new centre, located at Victor Crescent in Narre Warren, will be officially opened next February, but the local youth will be able to visit the facility and receive mental health support from 6 January. Mr Byrne was joined by Anne Peek and Christine Crosbie from the South Eastern Melbourne Medicare Local when he visited the facility last Friday. “After a long community campaign led by Casey’s youth it is exciting that a large headspace centre will be fully operational in January 2015,” Mr Byrne said. “Casey’s youth should be proud of their campaign for this much needed service for the local community. “Many young people go through some challenging times but to have a local mental health centre that can provide support and assistance to our rapidly growing youth population is vitally important. “It is important that the families are aware of this facility in Fountain Gate which will be of great value to young people in our region.” The opening comes after the facility was confirmed in August following concerns aired by federal Labor that the Narre Warren rollout may be in jeopardy. Mr Byrne had previously raised doubts about the future of the facility following the release of the Federal Budget, which revealed the removal of Medicare Locals. Funding to the South East Melbourne Medicare Local (SEMML), which was awarded the tender to run a Headspace office at the Fountain Gate Shopping Centre precinct in Narre Warren earlier this year, will cease on 30 June 2015 as the

But Headspace CEO Chris Tanti confirmed the Narre Warren Headspace project would go ahead. “To ensure the next round of Headspace centres are established within the original timeframes, Medicare Locals selected to operate new centres have been invited to lead the establishment under an interim agreement,” he said in August. “The running of the Headspace centre in Narre Warren will be reviewed as we get closer to the transition from Medicare Locals to Primary Health Networks. “We will work with the federal Minister for Health to determine the best way forward to ensure the sustainability and success of the centre. “Our main priority is to provide the full range of Headspace services to young people and families in this community.” Fountain Gate Headspace will provide mental health advice to young people aged from 12 to 25.

Celebration of service By BRIDGET SCOTT AS THE City of Casey celebrates the 20-year milestone since its inception, the already special occasion had an extra dose of meaning for one councillor. On Monday 15 December, the City of Casey celebrated its 20th anniversary. Part of the celebrations was councillor Wayne Smith who has been there since day one. Cr Smith, who is currently a River Gum Ward councillor, has sat on all seven councils and was mayor of the first City of Casey council. The only one to have been there continually since the beginning, Cr Smith said it was a great honour. “I’ve been lucky I guess that the public think I am doing a good job,” he said. “I am still as passionate now as what I was on day one.” Cr Smith has spearheaded the growth of the arts within the City of Casey and played a huge part in the development of the new Casey Cultural Precinct. He said he would like to be on the council long enough to see the opening of the new centre. “It’s been my project and I would like to see it through,” he said. The community-minded man said he has seen huge growth in the area during his time, but this was “nothing unexpected”. “I think we have managed that as well as we can,” he said. “Funding has to come from State and Federal governments and I think we lobbied well. We can never keep up but we do our best.” Cr Smith said he first joined the council to advocate for the arts community.
“I was on there to represent the arts and I think I have done that well,” he said. “In terms of arts, Casey is in a strong position.” Cr Smith is also a member of Casey Radio and said his motto was to “serve the community and make it better”. Current mayor and councillor Mick Morland was also on the inaugural Casey Council and has only missed one term since its inception. He spoke in glowing terms of his fellow councillor Wayne Smith as well as chief executive officer Mike Tyler, who has been part of the council for 35 years. “The new arts precinct is all because of Wayne,” Cr Morland said. “I don’t think there is a finer person in local government. “He has total integrity and will always look at an item on the agenda and vote on it based on its merits, and its merits only.” Cr Morland also served on two councils with the City of Berwick and said the council has always acted to be responsible and financial. He said a few of the traditional customs have changed since he first started, and the only time you will ever see him pull out the robes is during a citizenship ceremony. “In those days you had to wear your chains and robes for plenty of things,” he said. Cr Morland said with the past 20 years behind them, it’s now time to focus on the next 20 with a mix of youth and experience of the current council. See page 47 for more on the council and a celebratory dinner on Monday night.

Chipping in for net of support By LACHLAN MOORHEAD THE Casey-Cardinia Referral Network (CCRN) was ecstatic to be able to provide a local not-for-profit group with a significant donation this week. The network donated $500 to Christians Helping in Primary Schools (CHIPS) on Tuesday. “The Casey Cardinia Referral Network likes to support a community organisation that in turn supports people that are doing it tough, and especially during the Christmas season,” CCRN president Paul Tero said.
“CHIPS is just such an organisation. “As a long-time supporter of CHIPS, CCRN knows how well the team goes about their work with primary-school aged children in critical situations. “We know that the funds we give to this multiple Casey Volunteer Organisation of the Year winner will go directly to needs that are there throughout our community.” CHIPS, based in the state’s southeast, was established in 1999 and works with primary school children who are deemed as being in crisis.
Incorporated in 2003, CHIPS has now founded the Life Gets Better Camps and the Day Away program for children from vulnerable and disadvantaged backgrounds. The CCRN is a non-profit organisation which accepts one member from a different profession. Each person is encouraged to participate in giving referrals in the course of their normal business to people in the Casey community who could benefit from the services of another member of the network.

Bright hope for future By BRIDGET SCOTT A HAMPTON Park mother has praised Vision Australia’s services which have had a dramatic effect on the lives of two of her sons who are legally blind. Mother of three Rebecca Rudling said “they’ve helped a lot” given her sons Ethan and Samuel have oculocutaneous albinism, as well as nystagmus and are very sensitive to the sunlight. She said it’s not just the services, but the support you receive. Three-year-old Ethan was diagnosed at only two months of age when his eyes started to move and his mother suspected he had a vision impairment. Fifteen-month-old Samuel was diagnosed with the same condition as his older brother, but this hasn’t affected the happy go lucky attitude of the two boys. Ethan still loves playing with twin brother Christian while Samuel can’t get enough of his musical toys. Initially scared for the future of her sons, Ms Rudling was reassured due to the support of Vision Australia. “They’re healthy, happy, young kids,” she said. “They don’t know they see different.” “With help from Vision Australia, they ensure their development is up to speed.” Ms Rudling said she has plenty of contact with the early childhood educator who organises and determines which services people will need. Vision Australia visits Ethan and Samuel at home and gives Rebecca knowledge and strategies to help with her son’s development. Rebecca says that it has been invaluable to have the support of an organisation that genuinely cares about her family and her boys’ futures. Vision Australia runs a Light a Candle Christmas Appeal which encourages people to donate

A COUNCIL-RUN writing competition has showcased some of the area’s future authors. Casey’s Fresh Words Young Writers Competition, an annual council event, invited secondary school students to submit pieces for different categories. A special awards ceremony was held on 28 November to announce the winners, which was attended by shortlisted entrants, their families, teachers and City of Casey councillors. Two young Cranbourne North boys with a wisdom for words were among those to receive an award. Brothers Matthew and Adrian Harper-Gomm were both overall winners for their category and age group. Matthew, who took out the prize for the Honouring the Anzac Centenary category, was the author of Brothers of Blood. He said it was about the bond which the Anzacs made while fighting and once the words started to flow, it only took him about half an hour to write. “I had a few different ideas but in the end it came down to this,” he said. The Year 10 student said it was a huge pleasure to win. “It was a bit of a surprise,” he said. “There were two other very good poems that I was up against.” “It was a good feeling.”

Adrian and Matthew Harper-Gomm were winners of Casey’s annual Young Writers competition. 131784 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS Both brothers attend Kambrya College in Berwick and Adrian took out the Poets and Lyrics category as the Year 1112 winner. The boys were among 10 winners on the night, with their submissions chosen from a record number of 164 entries across the four categories. City of Casey Mayor Mick Morland congratulated all the winners. “No matter what you do in life, the ability to express yourself will always be a great asset,” he said. “It’s much more challenging to take a blank sheet of paper or
empty screen and create something where there was nothing, to capture the reader’s imagination and conjure a connection, knowing that your words are being judged. “To do this well requires not only creativity, but discipline and courage.” Well-known author Michael Pryor, who published works such as Blaze of Glory and Heart of Gold, was the guest speaker at the awards ceremony. The competition was open to young people in years seven to 12 who live, work or study in the City of Casey.

HEART OF TYNONG
TYNONG
A two-acre block
(8,000 square metres approximate) doesn’t come along very often in Tynong. IT’S zoned low density residential and is subdividable into two one-acre blocks (subject to council approval). It’s situated 300 metres from St Thomas Aquinas College and features an older home that can be renovated or razed. The home is completely surrounded by trees, which provide ample privacy and shade. The block opens into a cleared paddock suitable for grazing or a second development. As a bonus, it’s located only six kilometres (six minutes) from the new Pakenham Race Track.

crease opportunities for new participants to get involved in the sport,” he said. “Cricket Victoria identified local government areas where they felt there was a need to grow the game and Casey was one of those areas.” Councillor Morland said the extra money had helped council identify areas where they would like to grow participation in cricket. He said the partnership would mean it could support up to 140 local kids and help them get their first foot on the pitch. “This funding has helped council to foster growth in sport and leisure opportunities in Casey and promote physical activity in the Casey community,” he said. “Since council offered the 50 per cent subsidy at the start of the 2014/15 cricket season, many families have taken up the opportunity and their children are now enjoying the sport each week.”
Seven-year-old Dorshan can't wait to play. 132031 Pictures: DONNA OATES Cricket Victoria general manager of Game and Market Development Rohan O’Neill said that with the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup hitting out shores in February, the excitement for the season has grown. “Cricket is truly a game for everyon, and I would like to thank the City of Casey and the Victorian Government for helping to increase participation opportunities for junior cricketers within the area,” he said. COUNCIL in partnership with Cricket Victoria have batted down the costs of a local cricket program to boost participation in the sport. Through Sport and Recreation Victoria, the council received funding from Cricket Victoria which will subsidise 50 per cent of the costs for new participants who join the MILO in2Cricket program. Crowds gathered at the Marriott Waters Recreation reserve in Lyndhurst on Saturday 6 December to celebrate the funding and see what the program is all about. The Lyndhurst Cricket Club was one of four to receive funding. The other clubs are Devon Meadows, Endeavour Hills and Kalora Park. In2Cricket is an entry level participation program for five to eight-year-olds which includes fun, safe activities that teaching children the basic skills to play cricket in a non-competitive environment. Each player receives a start pack which includes a bat, hat, shirt and a ball to practise their skills. City of Casey mayor Mick Morland thanked Cricket Victoria for their funding. “Cricket Victoria provided this funding part of the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup legacy program, which aims to in-

Culture-infused Christmas By BRIDGET SCOTT A CRANBOURNE primary school replaced tradition with inclusiveness this month and celebrated Christmas in the best way it knew how. Cranbourne West Primary School held its Customs, Cultures and Christmas Carols on Thursday 4 December and celebrated the event as a festive season for all. Children were invited to come dressed in costumes true to their culture, so everyone could be part of the end-of-year celebrations. Parent and community liason officer Debbie Dodd said they wanted to have something where everyone would feel comfortable.
“We came up with this,” she said. “It celebrated every culture.” “We had some Indian girls dancing, the haka and some traditional Australian Christmas carols.” The school put on two performances and Ms Dobbs said the hall was overflowing. “The feedback was glowing,” she said. “Everyone thought it was fantastic from start to finish - it really promoted harmony.” All of the proceeds raised from the two performances went to the Cranbourne Information Support Service (CISS). The school donated a cheque for more than $500 to CISS the following week.

Nature garden a gift for the ages CASEY families took part in the opening of a brand new nature garden designed to aid the development of young children in the area. On Saturday 29 November the garden was opened at Lend Lease community, Mayfield in Cranbourne East. Neil O’Connor, Lend Lease general manager for Victoria, says that the company has commenced construction of a nature garden at its Mayfield community based on this research. “We build communities and, at the foundation of healthy communities, are healthy families,” he said. “The nature garden at Mayfield creates natural landscape with stones perfect for sitting on, wooden structures perfect for climbing, and sand and dirt perfect for getting hands into.” The natural playground is located on three hectares of woodland and centred around an old oak tree. Its features include a sand pit, basket swings and balance beams. City of Casey mayor Mick Morland said this playground reflected council’s pro-active approach towards childhood development.
“It’s not just the kids who love playgrounds; these are special places in which family relationships are forged and lifelong memories are created,” he said. The garden opening also coincided with the opening of a new display village, with local residents invited to come along and be part of the up and coming community.

A FEW teachers were jollier than usual last week and delivered plenty of Christmas cheer. Some select staff members at Cranbourne West Primary School came as ‘Santa for the Day’ on 12 December and fund-raised for Transplant Australia. The foundation helps raise money for organ and tissue dona-
tion and helps those in turn on the life-saving transplant list. Participants must raise a minimum of $30 to be sent a Santa suit and spend the day in their costume doing what they can to raise both money, and awareness. Mary Graham, Brad Campbell and Karen Wynen from Cranbourne West Primary School got into the spirit of it all last Friday and dressed up as the big red man.

Cheque lifeline is a relief By BRIDGET SCOTT
Cathy Willmott, second from the left, from CISS received a cheque from Cranbourne Inner Wheel members Marilyn Lynch, Rosemary Kreun and Charmaine Skewes. 132630
CRANBOURNE Inner Wheel has lent a helping hand to another local organisation to help ensure the longevity of one of its programs. Cranbourne Information and Support Service (CISS) was presented with a $2000 cheque last Friday which will go towards its Emergency Relief Program. Inner Wheel member Marilyn Lynch said members have hosted a few fundraising events over the past 12 months which have included a sausage sizzle, cocktail party and Christmas function. “We wanted to give the money back to the local community,” she said. “We know there are plenty of people doing it hard and that CISS really helped.” The Inner Wheel group also gave money to the Cranbourne Community House as well as the Uniting Church. Ms Lynch said her 29-member group is always on the lookout for new people to join. “Many are original members that have done their time and we would love new people and new blood,” she said. The Cranbourne Inner Wheel meets every second Monday at Blue Hills and welcomes a guest speaker each time.
Arson alert POLICE have reinforced the danger of fires following another deliberately lit blaze in Cranbourne last week. Around 4.40pm on Friday 12 December a fire about 80 metres by 20 metres started on grassland between Camms Road and Bellarine Drive. A witness who lives in a house which backed on to the land called police, who believe it was deliberately lit and ask any other witnesses to come forward. The CFA were called and police said it had potential to cause more damage and was nearby houses. Police, who said they will have zero tolerance, urged people to be vigilant with a declared period now upon us.

Judge for yourself THE Lang Lang Show is on Saturday 17 January. There will be a full program of horse events including showjumping, flat riding, Shetland ponies, the majestic Clydesdales, miniature ponies and Stockhorses just to name a few, with pre-entry for all horse events, except the Fun Ring. The Beef Cattle Spectacular is always a great success and well worth a look. There is a poultry competition and the dog show is always well attended with many breeds competing for the title of Champion. The pavilion will once again be filled with art, photography, craft, cookery and produce. The Lang Lang Young Person-
ality competition is on again this year. It is open to girls and boys aged three to 16, it is free to enter, so come along on the day and maybe win a prize. There will be a vegetable stall laden with fresh produce donated straight from the local market gardens with all proceeds going to the Kooweerup Hospital Ladies Auxiliary. As an added incentive to bring the kids along, this year there will be a free magic show by Scott Stunz. Scott will also be roaming around between shows and handing out balloon sculptures. He entertains adults and children and should be lots of fun!
There will be face painting, an animal nursery, pony rides, showbags and assorted rides, among other things, to keep the kids entertained. One lucky boy or girl will win a BMX bike and helmet in the Lucky Gate Prize. Every child will get a free ticket to the draw but they must be present at the draw at 2pm to collect the prize. With something for everyone from showbags to showjumping they are sure to find something to interest at the Lang Lang Show held at the Lang Lang Showgrounds in Westernport Road, Lang Lang. More information visit www. langlangshow.org or phone Cheryl Berry on 5997 5006.
Above: Cattle judging is a popular event. Right: Beautiful colours bloom at the show.

Dangers under the skin AUSTRALIA and New Zealand enjoy the dubious honour of having the highest rates of sun induced skin cancers in the world. The reason behind these high rates is thought to be due to the genetic make-up and pale complexion of the majority of the inhabitants and also the lifestyles that people enjoy here. Regular skin checks are essential for all Australian, even those groups with very dark skin. Southern European complexion does not afford much protection. Sun fun and photos THE City of Casey and the Melbourne Stars cricket team joined forces last weekend for the municipality’s third annual Family Fun Day. Thousands of cricket fans visited Casey Fields in Cranbourne East on Sunday to meet the Melbourne Stars who spent the sunny day signing autographs and posing for photos. “The first class sporting infrastructure available at Casey Fields has allowed us to form partnerships with elite level sporting teams providing great access to high quality sporting opportunities right in our own backyard,” Casey Mayor Mick Morland said. “We have a strong sporting culture in Casey and community partnerships with clubs such as the Melbourne Stars help to encourage and support grassroots participation in sport and recreation which is so important for the health and vitality of our city.”

Twenty-year-old Sontya Trahar will be one of the many local acts to be part of the Send Me to the CMAA mayoral charity concert on 19 December. Casey Mayor Mick Morland has encouraged local residents to tune into the home-grown talent. “Enjoy an evening of amazing local talent including Cathy Dobson, Chris Newman, Nia Robertson, Journey Bound, Jay Bruce and Tara Dowler and, of course, Sontya herself,” he said. “Funds raised from the event will support Sontya to head to the academy in Tamworth in January, a once-ina-lifetime opportunity. “The academy is unique within Australia and provides intense tuition in all aspects of the country music industry and advice on career pathways and development. “Sontya is proof that we have exceptional talent here in Casey. We can’t wait to see her performing alongside some of the country’s finest music acts.” Head along to the Cranbourne Community Theatre on Brunt Street, Cranbourne, on Friday 19 December from 7pm. Mayors take a birthday bow By GARRY HOWE THERE was no sign of a partridge or a pear tree, but 12 mayors gathered at Cranbourne Turf Club on Monday night to mark the 20th anniversary of the City of Casey. There was also a singer or two, a handful of former Citizens of the Year, long-term council staffers and a collection of community choristers. Current Casey mayor Mick Morland, a member of that first council who has served for all but four years since, hosted the anniversary dinner. Twelve former mayors attended - himself, Janet Halsall, Wayne Smith, Graeme Smith, Brian Oates, Rob Wilson, Neil Lucas, Colin Butler, Shar Balmes, Sam Aziz, Geoff Ablett and Amanda Stapledon. Mr Lucas was also the last CEO of the former City of Berwick and went on to represent the seat of Eumemmerring in the State Parliament. Also invited were member of the council’s senior management team, headed up by CEO Mike Tyler who has been at the helm the full 20 years, and all Casey Citizens of the Year. The City of Berwick’s last mayor, Cr Tom Gyles, and the first and only mayor of the City of Cranbourne, Peter Bottomley, gave an insight into the history of local government in the area. Mr Bottomley, a long serving Kooweerup Secondary College teacher, explained that Cranbourne had evolved from shire to city status only seven months before
Jonathon Welsh heads the Casey Community Choir.
Helping to mark the 20th anniversary of the City of Casey are, from left, longest serving councillor and first mayor Wayne Smith, current mayor Mick Morland, CEO for the full 20 years Mike Tyler, the last mayor of the City of Cranbourne Peter Bottomley and the last mayor of the City of Berwick Tom Gyles. amalgamation, giving him the dubious honour of being its one and only mayor. River Gum Ward representative Wayne Smith, the first City of Casey mayor back in 1997, was celebrated as the only constant councillor over the two decades. CEO Mike Tyler has also been at the helm for the entire journey - having worked as a planner for the former City of Berwick for 13 years prior to that. Cr Morland said it was forecast that Casey’s population would grow to 450,000 by 2036 and that the council was charged with the responsibility of delivering infrastructure to match that growth. He spoke glowingly of the $125
million cultural precinct which would not only serve to get all of Casey’s 1200 staff under one roof but deliver a ‘unique’ arts and cultural experience for residents. Guests at the anniversary dinner, held at the refurbished Cranbourne Turf Club complex, were entertained by the City of Casey Community Choir, under the direction of Jonathon Welsh, as well as Berwick based opera singer Shu Cheen Yu and entertainer and former TV star Andrew Williams. The night wound up with all former mayors dancing to a clip Casey is Happy - where random residents dance along to the Pharrell Williams hit Happy - commissioned to mark the anniversary.
Andrew Williams entertains guests with old favourites.
Renowned opera singer Shu Cheen Yu, from Berwick, wows the crowd.

Harry’s on a golfing roll By RUSSELL BENNETT IT’S often said that the hardest part of golf is the game between the ears - the mental aspect. So it’s little wonder that, at just 16 years of age, Harry Whykes is making huge strides in the sport. “You have to feel like every hole on the golf course is your favourite,” he said. “If you step up to a hole and you don’t like it, a bad feeling from the start probably isn’t the way to go.” Of course, it helps that Harry lives just off the third tee at Settlers Run. He lives and breathes golf, and if he keeps progressing at the rate he has been, the world truly could be his oyster. He recently won the club championship at the course, shooting a course record one-under par 71 off the black tees. Harry started playing golf when he was just six - influenced by his older brother and his grandparents. And now, as a student at Rowville Sports Academy, he plays off scratch - a handicap of 0.2, to be exact. “When I was about 11 or 12, I felt like I was pretty good for my age,” he said looking out over the Settlers Run
course from the clubhouse earlier this week. “I played in the State Primary School Championships and I missed out on top eight qualifying by a shot and that just gave me more motivation to hit that mark, and I’ve been progressing ever since.” Harry also played in the Peninsula Junior Open this year, winning with a second round three-under 68 at Portsea, and tied for 14th in the 15 to 18-year-old category at the Junior Worlds at PGA West in California. Playing more tournaments overseas in the next year or two is a key ambition of Harry’s. He’s already fiercely independent, but he knows he has to be able to play in the bigger tournaments and tours around the world. As for the club championships, Harry got the monkey off his back that had been sitting there during the 18th hole over the past couple of years - and everyone at the course was thrilled for him, even his opponent. “I had a couple of close calls - in a B Grade semi-final, I was really close then and it went down to the last hole, and last year I got in the A Grade quarterfinal and lost on 18 again, so that was a
horror hole for me,” he said. “But this year I capitalised on a pretty big year competing so I had much more experience. “I was more in my comfort zone, and I got to my semi-final and I was two down with two holes to play and I ended up winning those two, halving the 19th (the 1st hole) and winning the 20th (the 2nd hole). That was huge, mentally. Those 20 holes almost felt like 36 due to the pressure.” He went on to actually play 36 holes across the morning and afternoon in the final last Sunday, and he stood up to the pressure brilliantly. His composure and mental toughness serves him perfectly for his putting, which he describes as one of his biggest strengths. “Everything in my game is OK, but trying to piece it together and prepare for a tournament correctly is the biggest thing,” he said. “I feel like I’m just missing out on the state team but my rounds in tournaments this year have been a lot better. Hopefully, I can make a state team in the next six to 12 months - I definitely want to do that before I turn 18.”
Harry Whykes has a steely determination to succeed and it has him on a Picture: RUSSELL BENNETT potential path to golfing greatness. 132680
Country Week - it’s on for young and old Quirk-fire century By RUSSELL BENNETT IT’S was hard to tell who really won the battle of old bull versus young at Cardinia on Sunday as WGCA rising stars and established veterans, alike, put their hands up to be counted for Country Week selection. On paper, ‘Cal’s Team’ (149) was no match for the equally creatively named ‘Azza’s Team’ (249), but this was more about Country Week selectors running their eye over potential representative players than it was about bragging rights between Tooradin guns Cal O’Hare and Aaron Avery. Young gun Andrew Proctor gained plenty of experience playing with and against a who’s who of league stars. He opened with Seagulls skipper Tom Hussey for Azza’s Team and retired on 53 after displaying an impressive array of shots. Hussey (43) also got amongst the runs, while Matt Hutchinson (25) and Clinton Marsh (37 not out) kept the run-rate ticking over with some big blows in the latter stages of the innings. Merinda Park spinner Dylan Cuthbertson shone with the ball, taking 3/39 from his
10 overs including the big wicket of Hussey. Having recently returned from a stint with Victorian Premier outfit Fitzroy-Doncaster, his legspinners would be a huge asset on the Country Week turf. While Hutchinson and Marsh showed what they’re capable of with the willow, it’s with the ball that they really worked their magic. The big Devon Meadows left-armer bowled brilliantly in his 10 overs for Azza’s Team, finishing with 2/28 and constantly asking questions of the opposition top order with his ability to move the ball both ways and hit a consistent line and length ball after ball. Marsh, meanwhile, bowled with plenty of heat and looked particularly lethal with his fuller ball. AJ Walker was the pick of the batsmen for Cal’s Team - brutalising anything too short. He’s a likely candidate to open the batting for the WGCA during the carnival, while another of his Emerald team mates big Darcy Hellriegel showed he’s a more than handy lower-order hitter - complementing his outstanding opening bowling. This year’s 16-man squad is par-
gives DDCA edge By DAVID NAGEL
Emerald team-mates Clinton Marsh and Darcy Hellriegel have both been selected in the WGCA’s Country Week Picture: JARROD POTTER squad. 132570 ticularly balanced, with each player in strong form at club level. While Danny Diwell hasn’t made as many runs as he’d have liked to at this point, he’s leading Merinda Park brilliantly. There’s also plenty of exciting youth in the side, such as Josh Lownds, Cuthbertson, Hellriegel and Bradley Birkhead, while District stars have also been rewarded for their stellar form. All told, there are nine new selections this year - showing the depth of talent across the WGCA.
2015 COUNTRY WEEK SQUAD Cal O’Hare (captain), Aaron Avery (vice-captain), Tom Hussey, Russ Lehman, AJ Walker, Simon Parrott, Neil Barfuss, Danny Diwell, Josh Lownds, Matt Hutchinson, Dylan Cuthbertson, Darcy Hellriegel, Kyle Brooke, Bradley Birkhead, Jack Ryan, Clinton Marsh. Emergencies: Dave Nutting, Jason Williams, Alex Cann, Jason Hameeteman.
THE Dandenong District Cricket Association (DDCA) Under 21 team is through to the semi-finals of the VMCU Neil Wight Shield after a stunning victory over the North Metro Cricket Association on Sunday. The DDCA pulverised the NMCA attack, racking up 4/305 from its 40 overs with Springvale South star Dylan Quirk (142 not out off 97 balls) smashing a brilliant century. North Dandenong’s Clayton McCartney (95 off 87 balls) was also damaging with the bat as the DDCA boys rattled off runs with ease. Hallam-Kalora Park’s Jordan Hammond (5/25 off 8) then skittled the NMCA top order, claiming a hat-trick on his way to a five-wicket haul. The NMCA was rolled for just 62, with North Dandenong’s Liam Dudding (3/27 off 8) providing great support to Hammond. The DDCA team, which is looking for back-to-back titles and its fifth shield in just seven seasons, will now play the Eastern Cricket Association at
Mount Waverley on Sunday 11 January. Meanwhile, the DDCA has announced its squads to compete in the Under 16 Jim Beitzel Shield and the Under 14 Russell Allen Shield, with both junior carnivals to be held on 5 to 18 January. UNDER 16 SQUAD Lachlan Brown, Rhys Cannon and Mathew Pereira (Berwick), Jesse Davies and Jesse Quigley (Cranbourne), Jacob Bakes and Ricky Johnson (Doveton), Zac Perryman (Endeavour Hills), Raveen Perera (Narre South) and Joel Cramer, Maheesha Gamage, Callum Sigaras and Nathan Villella (Springvale South). UNDER 14 SQUAD Jonathan D’Rozario, Jordan McDonnell and Toby Wills (Berwick), Ashvin Adihetty and Thiranja Karunarathna (Berwick Springs), Riley Siwes and Joshua Smith (Dandenong West), Ravidu Meedeniyalage (Lynbrook), Harish Rao (Lyndale), Jacob Hinds and Matthew Wilson (Narre South) and Shisir Kulkarni, Yash Pednekar and Tushar Rana (North Dandenong).

Bombers get Eaton alive By JARROD POTTER
Victorian Premier Cricket Round 11 (Twenty20) CASEY-SOUTH MELBOURNE (4/129cc) finally notched its first win of the year in a nail biter against Essendon (7/126). Losing their openers on the cheap side - with Josh Holden (11) and Dan Watson (8) heading back to the change rooms at 2/22, it brought together Ryan Eaton (52 not out) and Tasmanian first-class cricketer Clive Rose (50) - who is back to represent the Melbourne Stars in the upcoming Big Bash League. The duo notched a textbook Twenty20 partnership - as they smashed 99 together in a scintillating display of hitting. Eaton smacked the short ball and ran some very hard singles to keep the scoreboard ticking over at Casey Fields to earn himself his inaugural 1st XI half century. Rose smacked six boundaries en route to his half century and it left a decent challenge for Essendon to chase. The Essendon chase stopped and stalled in parts as Chris Hall (2/23), Dan Watson (2/20) and Clive Rose (2/28) took important wickets at crucial moments. Aaron Ayre (45) and James Seymour (53 not out)
From West Gippsland to a dashing 52 not out for Casey South Melbourne, Ryan Eaton has impressed with his step up the ranks in Victorian Premier Cricket. 132469 Picture: JARROD POTTER made important strides towards the target, but once Ayre fell, trapped in front by Hall, the Bombers lacked the firepower down the order to get the runs. Essendon would fall three short after a last ditch hitting
spree off Rose in the final over reaped 18 of the necessary 21 to win. Casey-South Melbourne faces Carlton in its last match of the year - a one-dayer starting at 11am at Princes Park 1.
Gulls’ shadow looms large By RUSSELL BENNETT WGCA PREMIER DIVISION REVIEW - ROUND 7 (DAY 2) TOORADIN looms as the biggest threat to the so far undefeated Cardinia this Premier season after Tom Hussey’s men swept aside Pakenham in impressive style on Saturday. The difference between the contenders and the pretenders in the top tier became increasingly apparent as the Lions were dismissed for just 171 chasing Tooradin’s first innings of 262. The undefeated Cardinia rightfully sits atop the ladder after Round 7. The Bulls have hardly put a foot wrong. But the Gulls are starting to hit their straps and with plenty of upside still left they loom large over the competition. Cal O’Hare, still nowhere near full fitness following his knee surgery, only bowled three overs on Saturday while Aaron Avery isn’t bowling at all at the moment due to a side strain. Russ Lehman, Premier’s leading run-scorer, was superb at the top of the order for Pakenham on Saturday, with his only false shot coming on 92 when he flicked Ash Adams straight to square leg. Lions skipper Jason Williams (25) also offered plenty of resistance and refused to simply give his wicket away. But, worryingly for Pakenham, the same can’t be said for much of the rest of its line-up. Renowned partnershipbreaker Adams (5/35) got a roll
Former Nar Nar Goon/Maryknoll all-rounder Josh Lownds looms as yet another genuine match-winner for the Seagulls in the Premier grade. 132406 Picture: DONNA OATES on after removing Lehman - finishing with his first five-wicket haul of the season. But it was Hamill and newcomer Josh Lownds who really set the tone - combining for 5/80 in 34 overs. Speaking after play on Saturday, Hussey praised Hamill’s work-rate and added that Lownds, formerly of District side Nar Nar Goon/Maryknoll, was “just superb”. The Tooradin skipper was worried with Lehman and Williams at the crease but he knew what his bowlers were capable of with Lehman’s dismissal. “We knew we couldn’t take anything lightly - we just had to be on the whole day,” he said. That ruthlessness is a dangerous sign for the rest of the competition.
In other local Premier scores from across the weekend, Emerald (130) was no match for Cardinia (9/279); Kooweerup’s modest 154-run first innings was still enough to secure an outright victory over a terrible Upper Beaconsfield (43 and 80); and Merinda Park (1/92) cruised past Beaconsfield (91) in its rain-shortened clash. In District division, Pakenham Upper-Toomuc (165) clinched the points against Clyde (106); Lyndhurst Vikings (5/236) stormed past Devon Meadows (222) on the back of a massive 136 not out from Jason Hameeteman; Nar Nar GoonMaryknoll (6/231) cruised to victory against St Francis Xavier (164); and Officer (6/180) continued its impressive start to the season against Cranbourne Meadows (6/122).

Dushan deals out the pain By JARROD POTTER DDCA - Turf 1 Round 6 (day 1) BERWICK (2/233) put its first inning’s points on lay-away as North Dandenong (90) failed to find any fluency with the blade or ball. BERWICK v NORTH DANDENONG At every turn lurked a Bears’ wicket - Dushan Wickramarathna (4/20) will feature in a few North Dandenong nightmares this week as the Berwick spearhead crushed the visitors’ hopes. Resilience came from Caleb Millman (25), Dean Gunawardana (22) and Liam Dudding (15), but only in small doses as Berwick restricted North Dandenong to a scant 90 from its 33.4 overs. It left Berwick with an eternity to bat, notch first innings points and potentially send the visitors back in for a second dose of pain. Captain Jarrod Goodes (41) struck the boundaries early before copping a straight one from Shane Clark, leaving the rest of the job to Ryan Williamson (52 not out), Brad James (37) and a huge knock from Bathiya Perera (81 not out). Finding his best fluency before Christmas, Perera flogged nine boundaries and four sixes across the Arch Brown Reserve arena to give North Dandenong nothing to smile about heading off at stumps. Goodes kept his side at the crease - choosing to set a monster tally for the Northerners next week instead of sending them back in at the death. The match resides in his hands now as North Dandenong can only hope to hold on in its inevitably long second innings next week. LYNDALE v HALLAM KALORA PARK You could only wonder what could have been for Lyndale (1/13) after running through Hallam Kalora Park’s (177) top order for peanuts. The battle belonged to the home side until tea as Ricky Foulstone (3/35) and Dale Tormey (2/49) razed any Hawk that came near the crease. The Hawks sat dangerously close to their demise in the baking heat, but were able to turn back the clock through Amila Perera (54) and Javeer Hayer (49) who turned the game on its head. From 6/43, Perera and Hayer worked the singles and kept the home side on their toes. Their stand would be broken through a run out but the tail wagged from Jordan Hammond (15) and Ben Hall (16) to bat out 72 overs en route to 177. Liam Mara (2/37) would join the Lyndale bowling party to finish the Hawks off. The day didn’t go completely Lyndale’s way as it lost Conal Ranatunga (4) just before day’s end. HEINZ SOUTHERN DISTRICTS v DANDENONG WEST Honours were split at Reedy Reserve as Heinz Southern Districts (191) put up the par score against Dandenong West. It could have been significantly worse as the Cobras took a while to get
Hallam Kalora Park captain Leigh Booth works one square. 132467 Ryan Williamson gets onto the front foot as the Berwick number three raced towards 52 not out. 132470 Pictures: JARROD POTTER warmed up. Three quick wickets to the Bulls left the ketchup makers in danger, but the source of Heinz’s success would come from Matt Cox (40) and Shehan Bandaranayake (40) as they added 65 for the fourth wicket before Cox struck one straight back to Andrew Harry (1/23). Bits and bobs and starts aplenty would highlight the remaining Heinz innings as no one truly booked a big score. Jaswant Singh (3/34) and Peter Atkinson (2/33) worked their way down the Cobras’ scorecard and the skipper would be please with a sub-200 chase next week on a lightning-fast Reedy Reserve in the midst of summer. MORDIALLOC v CRANBOURNE For the first time this year, a side has stood up against Cranbourne (1/5) and given them a sizeable challenge. Mordialloc (9/179dec) pushed through a reasonable tally against the Eagles pacemen. Steve Spoljaric (2/61) anchored an end to bowl a superhuman 39 overs... on the trot. The Cranbourne captain didn’t take himself off as he looped through all the overs at one end, leaving the work at the other wicket to Cam Kelly (4/62), Martin Kelly (2/29) and Tim Fathers (0/23). While Spoljaric kept things economical from his end - with 14 maidens to his name - the Kellys set about snaring the important scalps. Only Damith Ralalage (61) managed to get away from the Eagles while Brendan Morris (34) and Aaron Martello (21) were next best of the Bloodhounds’ brigade. A late day declaration left Cranbourne with three overs to face and it proved enough for Ian Daniel (1/4) to capture Clint Ayres (0).

Spending Christmas time in the top four HAMPTON PARK BOWLS TUESDAY WITH only one game before the Christmas break, Hampton Park’s Division-1 team had a cautious win at Narre Warren. CRANBOURNE BOWLS AFTER last week’s victory, Cranbourne (1) was confident of a great contest with ladder-leader Mulgrave Country Club. Despite the narrow loss to skips Lyn Quigg and Ray Travica, Cranbourne were no match for the opposition who went on to win by 39 shots. Head coach Steve Arthur was disappointed after the game but went on to say: “This is a reality check for our club, we are now sitting on the bottom of the Division 1 ladder and we must improve to save relegation. However with seven more games to play it starts this week against Ringwood at home and I am confident we can do the job.” DIVISION 1 CRANBOURNE were no match for ladder leader Mulgrave losing all four rinks and going down by 39 shots. Next week Cranbourne plays Ringwood at home. Results: Mulgrave Country Club
94 d Cranbourne 55 (R. Travica 2025, L. Quigg 12-15, M. Bland 1227, S. Arthur 11-27). DIVISION 2 MATT Stevens and his rink of Ray Boskell, Stan Myers, and Stan Burnett had a narrow one-shot win in a 25-shot loss to Narre Warren. Results: Narre Warren 88 d Cranbourne 63 (N. Fell 21-22, M. Boltong 14-19, R. Reid 11-33, M. Stevens 17-16). DIVISION 3 SKIP John Mulder had a draw on his rink and Skip Michael Scotter and his team of Sandra Mueller, Tony Collins and Ron Shields had a four-shot win but the side went down by a total of 20 shots. Results: Waverley Golf 80 d Cranbourne 60 (J. Mulder 18-18, M. Scotter 20-16, K. Bowler 8-27, T. Whalley 14-19). DIVISION 4 PLAYING Noble Park away was always going to be a tough assignment and eventually they went down by two shots in an exciting
game. Skip John Gardner and his rink of Allen Skurrie, Len Warner, and Tony Scranton won by 12 shots to almost get the side over the line. Results: Noble Park 74 d Cranbourne 72 (C. Wright 13-19, J. Gardner 24-12, S. Venville 16-21, S. De Piazza 19-22). LADIES’ MIDWEEK PENNANT CRANBOURNE met a fierce Edithvale at Edithvale, and they were ready for the unbeaten side of the section. S. Venville’s team were the only winners on the day. Results: Edithvale 86 d Cranbourne 55 (C. Wright 14-33, F. Farrall 7-40, S. Venville 24-13). Division-1 open playing away to Noble Park saw a resurgence of the side. Lesley Mulder played well in her return game. For K. Fulton - up by one at the end of play - it was a great recovery after being down most of the day. G. Dudink’s team were victorious with 10-shots up, while M. Boltong’s team was
13-shots ahead for the day. Results: Cranbourne 68 (K. Fulton 18-17, G. Dudink 23-13, M. Boltong 27-14.) d Noble Park 44. Division-2 open playing at home to Keysborough proved a hurdle with a defeat by one shot. I. Smith’s team of O. Stanley, M. Scotter and E. St Ruth, were on fire for a great win. THE Audi S1 Sportback is the hottest member of the new A1 line-up. This hot-hatch is the real deal with the sprint from zero to 100km/h taking only 5.9 seconds - that was big petrol V8 territory not that many years back, though we should point out the little Audi has the advantage of being driven through all four wheels. But where the big V8 would have been turning petrol into tyre smoke at the start of its sprint, the Audi has instant grip from all four tyres. The Audi A1 is already a pretty little hatch and responds well to the sort of dress-up you anticipate in an Audi S model. Our test Sportback was finished in Misano Red metallic paint (a $990 added cost) plus quattro exterior and interior packages. It had a front bumper with a spoiler lip in aluminium look, xenon-plus headlights with red trim, a quattro roof spoiler, quattro badges on rear doors, and 18-inch wheels in five-arm design, the latter being in matte black and partly polished. Topping off the S1 Sportback were a contrasting black roof and black boot lid. The interior featured S sport front seats in Nappa leather with back-rest cover in black, again there was a quattro logo. There was also the black centre console, door armrests in black with contrasting stitching, flat-bottom leather wrapped sport steering wheel with S-specific stitching, air vent sleeves with red inner ring and floor mats in black with contrasting double piping. Air vents were in high-gloss aluminium with red inner ring. All these are great dress up items, but they didn’t come cheap. Though the S1 technically sells for under $50,000 (plus on-roads) our test car was on the high side of $60,000. The Audi S1 is powered by a high-performance four-cylinder 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine pumping out 170 kW of power and up to 370 Nm of torque. After getting to 100 km/h in under six seconds, the S1 Sportback will move onto a governed top speed of 250 km/h should you be on a racetrack or enjoying a drive in the Northern Territory. On the subject of the NT, it’s interesting to note that the section of road with no speed limit has been extended after it was found that no crash fatalities due to incorrect speed have been recorded since the 130 km/h limit was withdrawn. We were delighted that our test car had a slick shifting sixspeed manual gearbox - this is definitely the sort of car that attracts those who enjoy doing their own driving. Audi’s famed quattro allwheel drive system directs

power variously from 60 per cent to 40 per cent between the front and rear wheels according to traction needs. The 6.5-inch colour screen provides high resolution images. Standard in the S1 Sportback is the top-of-the-range Audi MMI (Multi Media Interface) with navigation plus. It has two SDHC card readers and uses a Bluetooth interface and the Audi music interface to connect phones and mobile players. The system comes with a DVD player and a voice control system that accepts navigation addresses as well as radio, media and telephone functions. Our car had an optional Bose surround sound system with an output of 465 Watts driving 14 speakers including a subwoofer. We loved the LEDs and light guides that illuminate in white the surrounds on the front woofers and mid-range speakers. Should an owner you manage to misuse the in-built safety features of the quattro all-wheel-drive there is super suspension and handling, big brakes and built-in electronic traction aids to keep drivers out of trouble. The hot little Audi S1 has received high marks in official safety testing and easily gained five stars. Audi A1’s suspension has been reworked for use in the S1 and the electro-mechanical power steering provides excellent road feel, at the same time taking less power from the engine to drive hydraulics. The Audi dynamic handling system comes with a range of settings - Efficiency, Auto, Dynamic to vary the response of the engine and the variable shock absorbers. Even the engine note is tuned to suit - no marks for
guessing the Dynamic mode got the biggest workout during our test week. For high speed driving it is good to know there are brakes to match. The S1 has a larger master cylinder and discs than the A1; red calipers with S1 lettering were one of the options on our car. We also had the optional 18-inch alloys in place of the standard 17s. During the media launch of the S1 we used Baskerville Raceway in Tasmania to really push the Audi S1 Sportback to the limits of grip under safe conditions. It has huge levels of grip, telegraphs its behaviour via the steering and through the seat of the pants, and is easy to bring back under control. Simply brilliant. Officially the fuel consumption of the S1 Sportback is just 7.1 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres on the combined cycle. In real life, admittedly with a fair bit of verve in our souls, we used from nine to 12 litres per 100 kilometres in hard country driving, with similar numbers on interesting country roads. On the motorway we did manage to get under seven litres per 100 without too much effort. This high-performance Audi is available for a little over $50,000, if buyers can avoid getting over enthusiastic when ticking the options boxes. The prestige of a German car for not much more than a similar Asian one could see the S1 Sportback high in the sales list.
