Fires raise fears
Fashion freaking out this summer BRIGHT colours, bold prints and a dash of Bohemian style are putting the heat into this summer’s fashions. That’s the tip from three of Geelong’s leading fashion retailers for men and women. The Laboratory, The Joker Shoppe and Mudge’s Shoes have dressed models Leah Nichols, James Harwood and Eddy Von Moger for a fashion spread in the summer edition of Geelong Coast magazine (GC). Freaky frocks, sharp shoes and trendy trousers are just some of the wares on display over eight dazzling pages. The region’s best glossy lifestyle magazine has plenty more to interest local readers over summer holidays. Covergirl Amy Price, of Torquay, talks about her acting breakthrough in Hollywood, Newtown artist Amanda Blake-Sutterby displays her intricate botanical images and Inverleigh couple Glenn and Lindy Capelli grant a tour of their award-winning home. Elsewhere readers will enjoy a profile on Surf Coast fuzz-rock band King Gizard and the Lizard Wizard, along with a captivating spread on the Otways photography of Newcomb shutterbugs Gerry and Gloria van der Meer. All this and much more features in the summer GC, available now for $5.50 at all good local newsagents.

THE PRICE OF FAME
AN OUTBREAK of fires north of Geelong this week has prompted a CFA warning for land owners to be on red alert for a long, hot summer. Duty officer Mark Sinkinson said above-average temperatures and an abundance of fire fuel had created a volatile mix. “People often think of the Otways and Lorne when they think of bushfires but there are many homes in areas like Leopold, Lara and Drysdale that back onto open properties, he told the Independent. “They need to be alert to what’s around them. Mr Sinkinson said residents of local semi-rural properties were in a high-risk environment and needed to fire plans in place. “Leaving early is the best option for you and your family, sometimes you need to only walk a block away to be safe. “Don’t rely on official warnings, leave early and remember that emergency services could be stretched to the limits. A wheat crop fire at Little River and a number of smaller paddock blazes around Lara this week underscored the CFA warning. Mr Sinkinson also warned holidaymakers to ensure their barbecues were safe. “People can be complacent with barbecues. They need to be three metres away from any flammable material – and that’s any kind of barbecue. Caravan owners should check their smoke alarms and extinguishers because fires quickly spread in vans, Mr Sinkinson warned. The CFA also highlighted household electrical fires as a major problem over the festive season, with crews already called to douse flames from a burning Christmas tree in a Geelong home. Mr Sinkinson said electrical faults were one of the top three causes of house fires each year, so the CFA was encouraging families to take care with Christmas trees and fairy lights in particular.

CLAUS OUT: Geelong Taxi Network boss Peter Valentine is ready to surprise revellers tonight.
“The dealer alternative”
WATERFRONT visitors could have been forgiven for cautiously looking skyward last weekend as a growling rumble echoed through the streets. But rather than toned-down jet fighters, the sound signalled the start of local bikies’ annual toy run. The event attracted more hogs than a hillbilly picnic, with 2300 bikes joining the fundraising ride for children’s services at Cottage by the Sea, Bethany and Geelong hospital. Geelong Harley Davidson’s David O’Brien said the run from Geelong to Queenscliff was still growing in popularity after 22 years. Ride on, bikers. DIDN’T take long for the punters of Geelong to decorate the statuesque sconce of central Geelong’s restored Edward VII statue. We’d been expecting beer cans or worse but it seems the defacers are a little more classically-minded, crowning Ed with a garland of leaves, as pictured. It certainly gave him a distinctly Roman visage not unlike some of the robes he wears.

“SECRET Santas” driving taxis will surprise revellers with free rides home from central Geelong tonight. The Transport Accident Commission (TAC) has teamed up with Geelong Taxi Network to provide the initiative from 6pm to midnight. Three taxis will have the Santa drivers, who will ferry
passengers home across Geelong, the Bellarine Peninsula and Surf Coast. TAC chief executive officer Janet Dore said the initiative was a reward for making a “responsible decision not to drink and drive home during the festive season”. “The lead-up to Christmas is a wonderful time for people
to get together and celebrate the year that’s been at work functions and social gatherings among friends,” Ms Dore said. “But it’s crucial to remember that while you’re having a good time, you must not let it end in tragedy. You need to plan a safe way home, which if alcohol is involved, can never involve driving.”
with recent interview subjects leaving unintended messages on the Indy’s voicemail. In recent weeks it has recorded background conversations, the sound of footsteps on gravel and a windblown stroll as the phone owner inadvertently called back at all hours. Not that the Indy would ever use information so gleaned, of course! Then again… ROMANCE ain’t dead people, says Test Pilot Molly singer Matt Baird. Last weekend he played for a bloke who booked him to crash a picnic with his girlfriend and play their two favourite songs. What happened next? “He got on one knee and popped the question,” Matt says. “There were tears, lots of tears. It was pretty bloody great.” Must have made an encore redundant.

How Labor turned on its own to back Lib deputy
Party trick spoils plan By NOEL MURPHY A SECRET last-minute bid for deputy mayor failed when Labor-aligned Geelong councillors favoured Liberal Michelle Heagney instead, according to council insiders. They told the Independent an extraordinary alliance between the Labor bloc and Cr Heagney pressured Rod Macdonald, a Labor member, to withdraw his planned nomination just hours before this month’s deputy vote. He had the numbers to win, the sources said. They suggested the pressure was to be in response to Labor fears that high-
profile mayor Darryn Lyons might eventually run for the federal seat of Corio. Cr Heagney, who has voted with the anti-Lyons bloc in recent months, is considered a potent spoiler for the nominally Liberal mayor. The Independent’s investigation heard that council’s Liberal bloc primed Cr Macdonald after learning its favoured candidate, former mayor Bruce Harwood, would lose in a contest with Cr Heagney. Cr Macdonald canvassed support from the Liberal bloc and, confident of its support, agreed to stand. He then emailed other councillors announcing his intentions.
Cr Harwood’s withdrawal would have reversed the expected 7:6 vote in favour of Cr Heagney into a win for Cr Macdonald. But he withdrew under pressure from the Labor bloc. Cr Macdonald was reluctant to speak on the issue. “It’s gone and done. I spoke to a number of people, we had discussions, went through what’s happening, and I decided not to stand. “It’s all history, all the could have, would have, should have...no, it was my decision.” Cr Heagney would not be drawn on the issue or her alliance with Labor councillors such as recent South
Barwon candidate Andy Richards. She said Cr Macdonald’s email was his “and his right to talk about”. She believed she could work with Cr Lyons as his deputy but said “like any relationship, it takes both parties to work together”. Cr Richards said he spoke with Cr Macdonald on his deputy mayor plans but would not elaborate further. Cr Harwood declined to comment. “In all my time on council I haven’t made formal comment on these issues,” he said. Cr Lyons could not be contacted for comment.

Geelong ‘breath-taking’
A PRIVATE education centre targeting up to 100 overseas students is planned for South Geelong. Platinum Institute Australia has proposed the training facility at 349-351 Moorabool St to train international students in business and accounting studies. A planning permit application to City Hall said the site required only internal modifications to provide small office areas and larger training rooms. The application said the training venue would have a staff of five and asked for a reduction in car parking requirements to 12 spaces. “Due to the excellent public transit opportunities nearby the actual parking demand for this facility will be significantly lower than the estimated theoretical demand,” the application said. “This facility is also within walking distance of student accommodation opportunities in the central activities area. “It is considered that a waiver of 13 spaces is more appropriate for this development with consideration to the potential for overseas students.” City Hall has also received an application for a $7 million four-storey apartment block at 41-43 Bellerine St, Geelong. The application said the development would contain 13 dwellings of two or three bedrooms and also requested a partial reduction in car parking requirements.
GEELONG is in the national top-20 for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, according to Australian Institute of Health and Welfare. The institute said the “serious” long-term condition, hospitalised up to 3715 residents a year in Geelong.

GEELONG lost one of its two state upper house representatives after Moyne Shire mayor James Purcell won the final seat for Western Victoria in final counting this week. Nationals MP David O’Brien lost to the Vote 1 Local Jobs candidate after a preference deal between micro parties. The seat’s other MPs are Geelong’s Gayle Tierney and Ballarat-based Labor colleague Jaala Pulford along with Liberals Simon Ramsey and Josh Morris, in Warrnambool and Ballarat respectively. An accountant from Port Fairy, Mr Purcell started Vote 1 Local Jobs party to focus on job-creation in western Victoria. He wanted a review of governmental changes that incorporated acitivites such as tourism and waste management across Western Victoria.

MP asks for reviews of house sale, Ponds deal By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN THE SALE of Ann Nichol House and a deal to deliver public hospital services at Waurn Ponds will be reviewed under the new Labor State Government, according to Member for Bellarine Lisa Neville. Ms Neville said she had written to the Auditor General and Ombudsman seeking investigations into Bellarine Community Health’s controversial sale process for Ann Nichol House, a Portarlington aged care facility. The house was the last not-forprofit aged care facility on the Bel-
larine Peninsula when it was sold to Arcare amid widespread community opposition. Ms Neville said she had also spoken to new Health Minister Jill Hennessy about the previous government’s arrangement to incorporate public health facilities into a private Epworth Hospital at Waurn Ponds. “I have asked the Health Minister to have a look at the contract and arrangements and look at the deal that was done there. I don’t know if we can do much about it but I do want greater transparency about that arrangement.” Earlier this year, while still in op-
position, Ms Neville told the Independent “something stinks“ about the $50 million arrangement between Epworth Health and the government. Ms Neville and fellow minister John Eren, who increased his margin for the seat of Lara, said challenges facing Avalon Airport would also be high on their agendas. “We need to have a discussion with Tullamarine and see if there is a way of Avalon securing a place within the airport system,” Ms Neville said. “We’ll also have a conversation with Jetstar because we don’t want to see anything happen there.”
FURNITURE
Jetstar is widely tipped to abandon its Avalon base when an $11 million package to keep the beleaguered Qantas discount carrier at the airport runs out in April. “It’s an urgent issue and the premier (Daniel Andrews) is aware of it and it’s on his agenda,” Ms Neville said. Mr Eren said he had maintained constant dialogue with the airport while in opposition. “We still have high hopes for it to be Victoria’s second international airport and we believe we can provide some assistance to ensure it does.”

Petrol prices fuel tourist surge By PAUL MILLAR THE REGION is gearing up for a big summer tourist season as a significant drop in fuel prices provides added incentive to holidaymakers. Geelong’s Peter Anderson was scratching his head this week to remember when fuel prices had been so low, with the APCO director saying his independent service station chain was offering unleaded at 121.5 cents a litre.
Bumper crowds expected from bowser savings Two months ago it was hovering around $1.47. “Make the most of it while you can,” Mr Anderson said. He credited an oil glut on the world market for sparking a downward spiral of fuel prices. Michael Case, the RACV’s spokesman on fuel, said unleaded prices were the lowest since December 2010.
“But people should still shop around, especially if travelling through regional centres. Plan where you fill up,” Mr Case said. State Tourism Minister John Eren said the plunge in fuel prices created a great opportunity for Victorians to have a break in their own backyard. “We have so much to offer and by visiting local areas we are
keeping local people in jobs,’’ he said. Tourism Greater Geelong and the Bellarine’s Roger Grant said a growing reputation for providing an expanding number of eateries at scenic locations tied to a dip in the Australian dollar was also drawing more overseas visitors to the region. “There’s been tremendous
investment in the food and wine industry and there’s been real growth in the micro-breweries over the past 12 months. These places are not weather-dependent and if it’s a bad day at the beach you can head there,” Mr Grant said. “The summer season is shaping up quite strongly. All indications are strong.”
Foreshore manager Bellarine Bayside said it was on target for a boom summer even before the drop in fuel prices. Chief executive Kevin Craig said the caravan park at Portarlington, one of the biggest in Australia, was almost booked out in the lead-up to Christmas. “We’re frantically getting everything ready for an expected 5000 visitors to Portarlington, with another 4000 heading to other parks on the coast.”

ALCOA is buying up in the aerospace industry and in Ford – two industries once deemed the future of Geelong – as the company today ends a 51-year local association when 250 staff leave Alcoa’s Point Henry rolling plant. In a bitter pill for the total 750 workers laid off at Point Henry this year, Alcoa’s global mothership has invested heavily in aluminium Ford vehicles in the US and has now taken over German aerospace manufacturer Tital. Tital, an industry leader in aluminium and titanium structural casings for aircraft, is considered Alcoa’s next step in building a powerful aerospace capacity. Aerospace and car manufacturing were long cited as spearheading the future of Geelong manufacturing but hundreds of job losses at Alcoa, Avalon Airport and Ford’s North Geelong plant have laid waste to those ambitions. Ford, which will close in Geelong by 2016, hopes to bolster its fortunes with its new F-150 pickup - the highest-selling vehicle in North America and built from Alcoa aluminium. But Alcoa has told the Independent the new lightweight-cars deal had no ramifications for Australia. Alcoa’s last 250 Geelong workers face an uncertain Christmas, today farewelling the aluminium plant’s rolled products division.

AN INTERNATIONAl touring exhibition of the finest wildlife photographs in the world has gone on display at Geelong’s National Wool Museum. Geelong is the only city in the state to showcase The Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition, which has been displayed in six continents. Museum senior curator Michelle Smith said the stunning exhibition featured the winners from almost 42,000 entries and 96 countries. “It’s the best of the best and we’re getting to see it first in Australia,’’ Ms Smith said. The exhibition runs from 16 December until 1 March. Organisers integrated a local competition with the international exhibition. Ocean Grove’s Danielle Bamforth won first prize in the Geelong by Nature photographic competition with a picture of the heads of two sulphurcrested cockatoos peeping out from a recess in a tree. Ms Bamforth took the photograph at Geelong’s Balyang Sanctuary.

Local study on perceptions:
Women easier ‘if near booze’ By PAUL MILLAR WOMEN appear more sexually consenting if near a container of alcohol, according to a new Geelong study. The controversial Deakin University findings found that men considered women more seductive, promiscuous and flirtatious if they were even close to a bottle of alcohol. The study of 147 “sexually experienced adults” – 69 men and 78 women aged between 20 and 30 – examined whether the presence of alcohol could provide a sexual trigger. The subjects were shown four video clips of interaction between a male and a female with a bottle of water or alcohol. They were then asked to rate the woman, an actor, on her sexu-

in the woman in the video when depicted with the alcohol rather than with a bowl of water,” said researcher Professor Peter Miller. “These findings have implications for understanding how alcohol might contribute to sexual assault and also point to the need for further research on the relationship between how alcohol advertising might reinforce negative sexual beliefs toward women. “We don’t know why at this stage but we can guess it’s related to the sexual imagery involved in advertising. “What we’re trying to do here is understand the role this might play in sexual assaults.’’ The researchers also believed their findings and further research could determine how alcohol advertising might reinforce negative sexual attitudes toward women.

The Geelong Library Heritage Centre is located in a part of Central Geelong with very strong strategic connections. It is positioned within a five minute walk of well over 10,000 students and workers. The City seeks expressions of interest from suitable applicants to operate the café at the Geelong Library Heritage Centre with construction scheduled for completion in the second half of 2015.

The dilapidated structure, for years the precinct of graffiti artists and a dangerous, rubbishstrewn mess, is changing rapidly as artists including Rone transform its appearance. Rone, the nom de plume of graphic designer Tyrone Wright,
started his career decorating skateboards and skate parks before moving into Melbourne’s inner-city streets and lanes then galleries and exhibitions and overseas. Last weekend he took to the skies in a crane outside the old power station as one of dozens of artists putting their skills and talents to work at the new community precinct for graffiti and street artists under the plans of Vintage Warehouse boss Barry Ballis.
Plans for an eight-storey artwork will make for a signature hallmark at the North Geelong site. Rone’s work, typically of beautiful women, adorns large buildings from Jamaica to Barcelona, New York, Hong Kong and Tokyo. One of his most striking works is a nine-storey high mural dubbed L’Inconnue de la Rue – Unknown Girl of the Street – in Collins St, Melbourne.

Park bats ‘risk of killer virus’ GEELONG’S Eastern Park could be harbouring up to 17,000 potential killers if a Medical Journal of Australia warning on bats and lyssavirus is accurate. According to researcher Dr Joshua Francis, all Australian bats should be considered deadly sources of the rabies-like virus “unless proven otherwise”. Transmission of the disease from infected humans to other humans was “theoretically possible”, he said. Eastern Park is home to a colony of as many as 17,000 bats, or grey-headed flying foxes. The population varies across the year and can be especially susceptible to hot weather. Dr Francis, a paediatric infectious diseases specialist at the Royal Darwin Hospital, helped diagnose the first case of the disease in an Australian child. “Australian bat lyssavirus (ABLV) infection in humans is rare but fatal, with no proven effective therapy,” he said. “All Australian bats (flying foxes and micro bats) should be considered to be carrying ABLV unless proven otherwise. “Any bat-related injury - bite, scratch or mucosal exposure to bat saliva or neural tissue - should be notified immediately to the relevant public health unit, no matter how small the injury or how long ago it occurred.” Three people have died in Australia of bat lyssavirus since it was recognised in 1996, includ-

BAT DANGER: Flying foxes hang from the branches of a pine in Eastern Park. ing an eight-year-old boy after a bat bite three weeks earlier. Lyssavirus can take weeks, even years, to develop after a bite or scratch. Dr Francis called for greater awareness among health care workers and the public about the potential danger posed by bats. “Wounds caused by bat may seem innocuous but any potential abrasion or penetration of skin or mucous membranes should
be taken seriously,” he said. “Human-to-human transmission of ABLV has not been reported but is theoretically possible.” Large numbers of grey-headed flying-foxes inhabit pine trees near Eastern Park’s golf course clubhouse. The permanent colony ranges in number between several hundred to 5000 over winter, rising up to 17,000 in summer.

Local Muslims ‘feel confident’ By PAUL MILLAR GEELONG’S Muslim community believes locals will avoid linking the religion to Sydney’s deadly siege as police across Australia stay on alert for a backlash. Islamic Society of Geelong president Mohamed Mansour told the Independent self-proclaimed cleric Man Haron Monis, 50, was a sick individual with extremist views alien to followers of his religion. “We are upset that it could happen here in Australia, we
completely condemned it,’’ Mr Mansour said. “But people in Geelong are very accepting and until now it has been very good. “People should understand that every religion has some extremists like this, this was done by a sick individual.” Michael Martinez, of Geelong multicultural services agency Diversitat, said New South Wales was sadly likely to have reprisals. “It’s a very difficult time, a terrible situation for those that died and those that were held hos-
tage and for all the families who were affected,” Mr Martinez said. “What we do not want now is for people to use it as an excuse for another Cronulla. We need to focus on reaching out to people. “What happened in Sydney showed that we need to reach out to others of all ethnicity and culture.” Mr Martinez said he had been writing about how different nationalities came together to celebrate Christmas in their own way when he saw the siege unfolding in Martin Place on television.

Letters Put conventions on pier WHY would Deakin University, a key heavy-lifter, want to trade out of its plum waterfront real estate and accept an inferior busport site for future expansion just to placate over-the-top, knee-jerk planning by the Andrews Government, enmeshed in its honeymoon period (Independent, 12 December)? While a central Geelong planning authority to negate mainly moribund local governance is long overdue, why can’t a modest convention centre be part of a 24/7 interactive Yarra Street Pier? Is the incessant blowback for the pier because Mayor Darryn Lyons has put up the visionary project? Would dredging issues and the channels authority’s rabbit-from-the-hat historic wreck claim have seen the light of day should the local press, G21, Committee for Geelong and other compliant advocacy groups, together with Environment Minister Lisa Neville, been pressing claims for the environmental catastrophy that Bay West proffers? Cr Lyons needs to back up his ostentatious persona and broad-ranging frippery, irrespective of the social media groundswell, with jobs and a bricksand-mortar can-do brand. That’s what big – ticket Asian investors seek. A Yarra Street Pier with hospitality outlets, marinas and a convention centre would complement the waterfront and act as a further magnet to grow the discretionary dollar spend. The mayor made the right call. White-anting him only seeks to return to the Geelong Shuffle – one step forward and three steps back. With unemployment edging locally toward 10 per cent and close to double that for the young, the Yarra Street Pier requires proactive and bipartisan support. Richard Worland Manifold Heights
Shire breaks shooters ABOUT 33 years ago I was invited to attend a clay target shoot on the Winchelsea common. I took my son because he was keen to learn to shoot. Boys and girls, young men and women and older people were there. Everybody was well-behaved and enjoyed themselves. The club grew, eventually attracting shooters from Geelong, Colac, Lorne, Apollo Bay, Ocean Grove, even Melbourne and Warrnambool. It was one of the most popular shoots around.
Mayor Lyons putting region on the map I disagree with Terry Larkins (Letters,12 December) regarding the usefulness of the City of Greater Geelong calendar and Mayor Darryn Lyons. As a part-time resident of Ocean Grove, I find the calendar and its information on local facilities, events, dates of markets useful. It enables us to patronise local events, which helps the local economy. It has also proven handy for visitors who might have otherwise missed out on some local happenings. Cr Lyons might not be everybody’s idea of a mayor but, despite my initial scepticism, he has proven a great ambassador for Geelong and the region. He uses the media wisely and has given the Bellarine Peninsula an international profile it might not otherwise have had. On our last trip overseas we were asked about “Geeelong” by New Yorkers who had seen Cr Lyons on TV. They immediately started Googling Geelong and were impressed with what they found.
BACKED: Darryn Lyons keeps the focus on Geelong, say readers. Now they have listed Geelong and the peninsula as worth visiting, whereas previously they planned to visit only the Twelve Apostles and Great Ocean Road. Regardless of whether readers approve of his hairstyle and dress, they should be grateful for mayor who puts incredible effort into lifting the profile of his city and who seems prepared to put the time and effort into making Geelong and its surrounds a great place to live and visit. Many residents in other parts of Victoria would jump at the chance to have a vibrant, intelligent and hardworking mayor. Val Findling Ocean Grove
The hotels, roadhouse and shops benefitted and the local Lions club cooked our lunches as its main source of revenue. Each year we donated $1000 to the hospital, I believe. I can’t recall townspeople ever objecting to the noise two afternoons a month. Then came the anti-firearms Surf Coast Shire council, which declared that lead shot on the ground would somehow jump up and go down children’s noses and throats, so it shut us down. The council promised to help find a new site and we found three, all of which it rejected after huge expense for a small club. The truth is the council had determined we would never be allowed to find a site in Surf Coast Shire.
TERRY Larkins had a big swipe at the City of Greater Geelong and Mayor Darryn Lyons. Sure, I didn’t vote for him, but he has done a wonderful job putting Geelong on the map, especially with the Christmas tree and the lights at City Hall. I work in the city five days a week and to see that revolting Christmas tree last year in the mall was dreadful. We should put up more Christmas decorations next year. I especially like the flowers Cr Lyons has had installed in Malop Street, mostly the pansies, which are very colourful. It is frustrating when people come along and pinch the flowers for their own gardens, so they should please leave them alone. When I went to London last year the hanging baskets were the first things that stood out. They were wonderful. If Mr Larkins is unhappy with Geelong, he should move elsewhere so people don’t have to hear him whinge. Carole Keating Grovedale
If it had said from the start it would not grant us a permit we could have saved a lot of trouble and expense and looked outside the shire. Now we are almost broke. I would like to thank our dedicated committee for all the work they have done to try finding us a home. D Slater Highton
97% is 100% hoax THE CORRESPONDENT 97 Per Cent Right, who bucketed poor old Alan Barron in last week’s Independent for his climate scepticism, obviously doesn’t realise how silly is his pseudonym.
Email: editorial@geelongindependent.com.au PO Box 407, Geelong, 3220 Fax: 5249 6799
The original and oft-repeated claim that 97 per cent of scientists claim that rising carbon dioxide (CO2) is causing climate change is a fiction bordering on fraud. It came from a 2009 article about an online survey of 10,247 scientists, of whom only 3146 bothered to respond, of whom the answers of only 77 were accepted As 75 said ‘Yes’ to the survey’s two questions, the authors claimed 97 per cent agreed! A subsequent attempt in 2013 to justify the 97 per cent was quickly demolished. The 75 scientists cannot compare with the 31,487 American scientists who signed the Oregon Petition, which said “there is no convincing scientific evidence that human release of carbon dioxide... cause catastrophic heating of the Earth’s atmosphere and disruption of the Earth’s climate”. Global warming theory is just the latest in a recent line of hoaxes. The 1968 bestseller The Population Bomb confidently predicted hundreds of millions would die of starvation in the 1970s, in the 1970s we had the acid rain scare, then the Club of Rome in 1972 with its Limits of Growth, which predicted the collapse of Western civilisation. Much more significantly, there has now been no warming for 18 years despite a 10 per cent rise in atmospheric CO2. The global warming hoax is over – get over it. Lindsay Brown Grovedale
Unnecessary services WITH state Labor in power, the people expect a miracle within 12 months. The only jobs beneficial to the country are in manufacturing combined with export. Jobs in the service industry rely on the meagre export dollar in comparison to the cost of imports to sustain a healthy economy. The service industry has outgrown our population. The right-wing parties took about 50 years to move us from the necessary workforce into the unnecessary workforce. Now the people blame the unions for protectionism but few realise that right-wing parties are the mirror image of the unions, only serving society’s upper 10,000. E Ruseler South Geelong

Music fans get Para at festival By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A LOVE of various musical genres have coalesced into the blues, rock and Latin fusion that is Phil Para. Defying musical categories has been Para’s legacy for a long time, perhaps best defined by the long-running Saturday night residency at Melbourne’s famous Espy hotel. And long-running it really is – three decades of fans have continually returned for another dose of Para’s high-energy showmanship. Para will bring his distinctive guitar talents, exceptional vocal abilities and powerful stage presence to Geelong’s Motor City Music Festival, lighting up the Friday night line-up. For a muso who loves playing live, an invitation to the second annual Motor City gig was, well, music to his ears. “I love what I do,” Para said simply. “It comes from the audience, getting the energy, seeing people having a good time.
“And festivals are so great for that, not just the musos but for everyone, because there’s usually other creative artists involved, in fact the whole community gets into it.” A veteran of the EchucaMoama Winter Blues festival, Para said he was looking forward to experiencing Geelong’s version. It’s all part of the journey for a guitarist who has seen many trends come and go but who sees the honest roots of music still standing strong. “It’s been a bit of a crazy journey. We get all sorts of ages to our gigs, and a lot of young people coming through. “They were brought up on a lot of it because their mums and dads listened to it, and though they might have been too young to understand, you find they often come back to it. “If the music is honest it will touch the hearts of music lovers, instead of the marketing thing, which is all about money.” Para predicted a resurgence of rock ‘n’ roll and blues in the
next couple of years for that very reason, although, he said “it never really died out but it was on the sidelines for a while”. He will be part of a three-piece outfit at Motor City, channelling his inspirations Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Carlos Santana along with original songs. In fact, Para hoped to unveil some new material at Motor City as well as some rearranged tracks from his previous albums. “There are more songs in the pipeline. I’m working on a heavy metal and a punk-style song and maybe we might throw in some reggae ideas. “We always chuck in an original or new cover, and we can play around with the set lists a little bit because we are playing over two sessions.” Para was also keen to record a live album including some acoustic blues. “Live is always the best,” Para declared. “There’s nothing like a live album.”

IF THE reviews on social media are anything to go by, Sakuratei Japanese Cuisine in Manifold Heights is a gem. The recent addition to Geelong West’s culinary culture has been reviewed as one of the best Japanese restaurants outside Japan. And that’s from well-travelled tourists as well as locals who have discovered the authentic delicacies served with a minimum of fuss. The real strength of Sakuratei is the extensive menu, with everything from soups and entrees, main courses of ramen, udon, bento boxes and curries to desserts. The teriyaki chicken and beef have proved popular, along with the dumplings and hot-plate meals. Owner Flora says although some meals are not necessarily on the menu, the kitchen is happy to entertain special orders. A range of specials is available at the sushi bar along with a takeaway service - and all at very affordable prices. Not only are the various dishes freshly cooked, they’re served by friendly and knowledgeable staff. After three and a half years in busy Shannon Ave, Sakuratei has developed a loyal band of regular customers, Flora says.

IndySport St Leonards produces big variety On the

ST LEONARDS was productive for snapper, gummy shark, squid and whiting over the past week. Sadik Cagdas took visiting cousin Can Cagdas out off St Leonards chasing snapper in 20m. Can caught a 4kg fish and they lost another while trying to get it in the net. Other anglers fishing St Leonards found great numbers of squid on the grass beds just out from the boat ramp. Size 3 jigs in natural colours worked best. St Leonards Pier also fished well for squid and snapper. Swan Bay continued producing a variety of species. Elijah Walsh fished the entrance with his father on Monday morning, catching a well-conditioned gummy shark of around 5kg. Elijah also caught nine legalsize whiting. Fishing World Geelong’s Michael Moore spent some time in the Swan Bay channel where he boated plenty of pinkie snapper to 45cm on Gulp Turtleback worms in Pumpkin Green. He also caught numerous flathead and the odd Australian salmon. Jacob Bakker and Xandar Harrison fished the channel Monday morning with whole squid heads. Jacob took a flathead of 2.3kg and 62cm then another of almost identical size. The pair also boated silver

Wins the tonic for Christmas GEELONG Cricket Club enjoyed two wins from as many starts for the first time this season when it demolished Greenvale in a Twenty20 match last Saturday. Bowling first, the Cats put the clamps on early, with all seven bowlers used managing to make it very hard for the Kangaroos batsmen to score. Carl Sandri (2/9) was the pick of the bowlers as the hosts finished their 20 overs on just 5/95. In reply, Geelong cruised to victory in just 14 overs, with Hayden Butterworth (48) continuing his good form to top-score in an eight-wicket win. Tomorrow Geelong hosts Hawthorn-Monash in a 50-overper-side one-dayer. Although they’ve had a tough start to the season, a couple of wins on the trot could be just the tonic the Cats players need to claim another win before the Christmas break. In Geelong Cricket Association, after looking like the top few sides were breaking away from the pack, a couple of upsets has evened the ladder right up heading into Christmas. South Barwon dug deep last week, defending its 120 all-out by bowling out a disappointing East Belmont for just 107.

That, combined with wins to Lara over Bell Post Hill and Murgheboluc over Geelong West, has breathed new life into the season. This week Geelong West gets the chance to bounce back against Grovedale. Both sides will have a lot to play for because the loser will struggle to get back into finals contention. But a win will give the victor renewed hope over the break. Selections: South Barwon v ST JOSEPH’S, EAST BELMONT v Geelong City, NORTH GEELONG v Lara, GEELONG WEST v Grovedale, BELL POST HILL v Leopold, Newtown & Chilwell v MURGHEBOLUC. In division two, Modewarre has put together some impressive form to move into sixth place on the table. Tomorrow it plays Guild St Mary’s, which is struggling with just two wins so far this campaign.
The key to Modewarre’s success has been the spreading of the load, with Matthew Robinson and Jack Hosking leading the runs table with over 200 each, while Zac Wemyss has 16 wickets already. This renewed team approach should hold the side in good stead for this match. Selections: ST ALBANS BREAKWATER v Torquay, HIGHTON v Newcomb & District, MODEWARRE v Guild St Mary’s, MARSHALL v Waurn Ponds, THOMSON v St Peter’s, MANIFOLD HEIGHTS v Alexander Thomson. In division three, the gap between the top and bottom six is widening and if Little River can’t pull off an upset over Meredith tomorrow it might well be a case of the finalists being decided by Christmas. The Redbacks have been playing some of the top sides lately, managing to acquit themselves well. But it’s wins that count, so they’ll need to be at their very best to take the six points here. Selections: TEESDALE v Bell Park, Winchelsea v LETHBRIDGE, SHELFORD v Inverleigh, Corio v BANNOCKBURN, Little River v MEREDITH, Corio Bay bye.
