Hot property A LEADING local real estate agency has secured some of the highest property sales in Hastings Street, cementing the Noosa market’s return to a seller’s advantage. Within the last month, Richardson & Wrench Noosa (R&W Noosa) secured the sale of an apartment on Hastings Street for $6.5 million and the penthouse apartment of the Sandpiper development that was listed for $7.25 million. A non-beachfront French Quarter apartment was also sold by R&W Noosa for $660,000, setting a new record for sales price within the complex. These sales were in addition to the usual sales of Noosa Sound waterfront homes, including Paul Clout’s home listed for $4.95 million and the successful auctions of two Noosa homes in the $2 million price bracket. Richardson & Wrench Noosa co-principal Peter Butt said the sales were proof the local market was transitioning from a buyer’s market to one controlled by the seller. “The sales herald in a change in the market place. The market is now officially ... in transition. It’s changing from a buyer’s to a seller’s market,” he said. Mr Butt said it is common for the real estate market to “see-saw” between two extremes. “What happens with the real estate market is it seesaws between excessive supply of property and fewer buyers, which means lower
prices, and then the see-saw goes to a situation where there’s fewer sellers and more buyers, which means higher prices,” he said. “They’re the two extremes of the market and we are now in a situation where we are transitioning from a market controlled by buyers to a market that’s slowly turning towards a seller’s advantage.” Mr Butt said the demand for housing in Noosa was not driven by investment value, but rather quality of life and lifestyle values. “Noosa is a market where you can walk the streets and walk the beaches. Everything is at your fingertips,” he said. “It’s a very unique market and people have a high value on that.” Noosa’s location is also a major factor in what makes the town so appealing for buyers and holiday makers. “We’re one of only two or three north-facing beaches on the entire east coast, so that means we’re protected from south-easterly winds in winter
time,” Mr Butt said. “We’re facing into a situation where we have calmer surf. Noosa is a safe beach for young children, and it’s also a beach front where you don’t have to cross the road to get to the beach. “We’re cradled between the National Park, the Noosa River and the Heritage listed North Shore. We have access to seven beaches, lakes, rivers, waterways; so it’s an idyllic aquatic playground for a lot of people. “If you’re in Sydney and you want to come to Noosa, you can get on a plane and be sitting in your accommodation on the beachfront with your feet up, having a glass of wine, within the same time it takes you to drive from Mascot to Palm Beach in peak hour.” Mr Butt said the future looks great for Noosa with aviation fuel tipped to drop, airfares predicted to fall further and the Australian dollar already on the decline meaning more people will holiday domestically, and in Noosa.
Air time is oh so cool HUGO Evans, 9, of Tewantin had a blast at the Noosa Aquatic Centre inflatable fun land, which is on-site everyday for the school holdiays, from 12-3pm. Turn to page 11 to see more of the bouncy action. Picture: DARRYN SMITH

Noosa the poorer for ‘divorce’ By JONATHON HOWARD NOOSA MP Glen Elmes says he was “disappointed” with the final de-amalgamation separation payouts to Noosa Council from the Sunshine Coast Council. Minister for Local Government David Crisafulli announced in late December that Noosa Council would receive $1.6M of more than $22 million it claimed from Sunshine Coast Council across five separate claims. The decision has outraged Noosa councillors and mayor Noel Playford, who has since been in close talks with Mr Elmes over the best way forward. Cr Playford has also expressed a desire to contest the ruling and have it means tested. Mr Elmes said five categories were being considered by Mr Crisafulli in making his decision and
two of the five had now been paid. “This is not a decision I liked and I have expressed my views to the minister - I would have liked to see more awarded to Noosa but it’s not a decision I can make,” Mr Elmes told Noosa Today. “There are always winners and losers in these matters and while I was disappointed for Noosa, there are also members of my electorate living on the Sunshine Coast who were pleased with the decision.” Mr Elmes said he was now speaking closely with Cr Playford about ways for the State Government to support Noosa into the future. “Mayor Playford and I are speaking closely about ways to gain support from the government in a number of ways,” he said. Mr Elmes rejected criticism that the Newman-led LNP State Govern-
ment was closely aligned with the Sunshine Coast Council which is predominately LNP aligned. “The government has been very supportive of Noosa as we’ve seen with the stamp duty exceptions which saved Noosa Council $13 million,” he said. “We’re also looking at applying further pressure to the government to support Noosa in a number of ways, however this requires long-term planning and is not something that happens overnight.” Meanwhile, Mr Crisafulli has defended his decision and even hit back at both councils for failing to be forthcoming with information. The minister was asked why he did not make a decision on the final three areas of dispute. “Part of the reason was because both council were not forthcoming
with information,” he said. “Throughout this process, we have said all costs of de-amalgamation would be met by the Noosa Shire Council,” Mr Crisafulli said. “The transfer committee has agreed on hundreds of decisions, but on the five they couldn’t, I made a decision based on what was right. “The figures remain consistent with those the community voted on, and I have every faith in Mayor Playford doing a good job. “This was what was agreed to by them if we couldn’t come to a resolution. “I think the result is a very fair one.” HAVE YOUR SAY: Do you think Noosa was deserving of a greater share in the separation costs? Taxis give visitors a warm welcome By JOLENE OGLE ALMOST 40 of the Sunshine Coast’s taxi drivers are geared up to provide a warm Welcome to Noosa this summer season, having recently completed the Welcome to Noosa program. Welcome to Noosa is an online training program that provides basic information on Noosa - why the region is so special, its history, key things to do in Noosa, information on the Noosa Biosphere and more, as well as providing great customer service strategies and information on workplace health and safety. The program helps operators to deliver a memorable experience for Noosa visitors and local customers alike, increasing the likelihood of visitor satisfaction and repeat travel which will help retain and build local jobs. Local taxi driver Peter Camilleri said the program was great and he looked forward to sharing the information learnt. “Our business is about providing service to locals and visitors and the program had some great information in there that we can share with everyone,” he said. Suncoast Cabs GM John Lobwein praised the Welcome to Noosa program and said there are plans to introduce the program to all new taxi drivers on the Sunshine Coast. Noosa MP Glen Elmes says he was "disappointed" with the final de-amalgamation cost ruling, but his hands were tied on the matter.

NOOSA Council has revealed a levy fund for the Noosa Waters lock and weir operations has built up to $731,873 and will be refunded to residents. According to council documents Noosa Council has collected the surplus levy funds over the last 14 years in relation to the Noosa Waters lock and weir operations and maintenance. Following a council staff assessment of long-term maintenance requirements it was found that the funds were not required for future lock and weir expenditure purposes. There was also a legal question raised during council’s at the council’s final general committee meeting for 2014, on Monday 15 December. Council documents said the council had been able to carry forward surpluses from the lock and weir each year but there is no legal doubt that council has had the power to levy ratepayers to collect funds for the lock and weir each year. “Recognising these issues, it is proposed to implement a program to refund the surplus funds in accordance with the provisions of the Local Government Act and Regulation,” the council staff wrote in the report. “Legal advice from King and Co has provided a mechanism for ensuring that council meets its legal obligations in providing such a refund.” Information about the refund will be provided to the relevant home owners, both those who previously owned a home and who currently own a home where the levy applies.

Touching tribute By JONATHON HOWARD NOOSA Pengari Steiner School has described teacher Andre Vogel as a devoted father and passionate teacher in an official statement following Andre’s death last month. Andre, 36, and 16-year-old Gabriel Runge were killed when the van they were travelling in collided with a truck on New Zealand’s north island on Friday 28 November. The school has since issued a statement in tribute to Andre and they are expected to release a statement about Gabriel in the new year. “To meet Andre was to meet a man with a mission: one we have been blessed to witness unfolding. His deep love of the outdoors, and passion for the opportunities it gave to young people, were evident by the words he spoke, the camps he devised and by the sparkle in his eye. “With Andre, adventure didn’t have a finishing time and no four walls could pen him in. He knew that to live a life predominantly indoors was to live in a box, and that is no way to live a healthy life. As one of his T-shirts proudly proclaimed: ‘Think outside, no box required!’ “Andre had a tremendously broad appreciation of ways to get involved with nature: from snowboarding to surfing, climbing mountains, exploring caves, hiking and camping, running, biking, swimming, kayaking on white water, still water or sea water; the list goes on and the list was forever growing. His sense of adventure was contagious. He opened people’s eyes and hearts to the outdoors.
Here he found, as Shakespeare put it, ‘tongues in trees, books in the running brooks, sermons in stones and good in everything’. “This perception he shared freely and eloquently with others. Camps with Andre offered large amounts of learning in small amounts of time. He had the gift of making magical moments happen: a sunrise breakfast at the top of a large mountain with hot chocolate for everyone, a sunset walk with snow on the mountains, a fruit platter made on the hatch-cover of a kayak, a close encounter with a whale or visiting the cave of a white owl. “He cared deeply for that environment and was acutely aware of our impact upon it. When packing up camp not the tiniest scrap was left behind; and all he took from it was joy, inspiration and beautiful photos. “Through his eyes many came to a
fuller appreciation of nature’s beauty. Children saw him as fun and funny, the best camp teacher ever, someone who helped them to achieve the impossible; a fantastic and respectful teacher, quick and generous with his encouragement, firm when necessary, gentle when needed. “They remember his morning wake up songs, his bird calls, and his playfulness. He understood children so well as within him was also a young child, alive and open. He brought so much love and happiness, good laughs and friendship. “Many knew him for only a year or two, yet he seemed like an old colleague. His passion for helping people to learn about themselves, others and the environment was a source of inspiration to those of us working alongside him. His stories of adventure could make you feel you’d been

Pair will be missed By JONATHON HOWARD A NOOSA mother whose son was riding in the Noosa Pengari Stiener School bus when it was involved in a crash in New Zealand has paid tribute to the loss of Andre and Gabriel. Susan Ewington’s 16-yearold son Harrison was in the bus at the time of the accident, but was fortunate to walk away. “While we feel obvious relief to have our son Harrison home with us our hearts are deeply affected by the loss of Andre and Gabriel, Harrison’s teacher and his friend,” she told Noosa Today. “We extend our love and care to the families and loved ones of each of these special people who will be incredibly missed and always remembered. “Our family would also like to express our deepest gratitude to the staff at Noosa Pengari Steiner School for their incredible support and assistance during this time, and also to the broader school community and the Noosa community – the support we’ve received has been overwhelming and has been a great comfort to us.” “We also thank the Australian and New Zealand governments for their care in looking after the students and getting them home to us as soon as possible.”

As I tried to move my vehicle around his bus he then accelerated and drove his bus in the direction of my vehicle in a threatening and dangerous manner. “I can only imagine what the bus driver’s passengers and other motorists involved were thinking while this incident was unfolding before them.” Mr Shaw said the bus driver eventually drove off moving his bus into the right-hand lane and made a right-hand turn on the roundabout where Eenie Creek Road meets EumundiNoosa Road and disappeared. The couple took the bus number, a brief description of the driver and the time of day the incident occurred and con-
tacted both Noosa Police and Translink to report the matter. “When I pressed the (Translink) staff member for the results of the investigation he informed me that the incident was between the bus driver, Sunbus and Translink and had nothing more to do with me and then promptly hung up on me while I was still attempting to discuss the results of the investigation with him.” Mr Shaw said he had also followed up the matter with the police but they are still to respond to his complaints. Noosa Today has made inquiries with Sunbus and Translink in relation to this matter and will update the community in 2015.

A NOOSAVILLE couple have slammed the driving habits of a local Sunbus driver, who they say narrowly avoided running them off the road near Noosa Civic recently. Michael and Christina Shaw are long-time residents of Noosaville and have seen the roads become increasingly chaotic over the years. It was on 3 November when Mr Shaw and his wife were driving along Eenie Creek Road when they narrowly avoided colliding with a Sunbus at the Noosa Civic intersection roundabout. “The bus driver came out of the Noosa Civic shopping centre on our left, saw our vehicle but then inexplicably accelerated in front of us onto the roundabout causing me to brake sharply to avoid him,” Mr Shaw said. “I have absolutely no doubt the bus driver involved saw us as he accelerated across the intersection resulting in me braking sharply and swerving my tiny vehicle to the left of the road to avoid not only colliding with his bus but other motorists on the roundabout whose vehicles had been put in danger as a result of this bus driver’s disgraceful driving.” Mr Shaw said he sounded his horn to let the bus driver know how dire the situation was. But what happened next was unbelievable. “The bus driver then brought his bus to a complete

Early start for road safety works tion of the highway, involving seven fatalities, underlining the importance of getting on and fixing this section of the highway.” Queensland Minister for Transport and Main Roads Scott Emerson said the works would provide a higher level of safety for all motorists on this section of the highway. “The commencement of the tender process for the safety upgrades and early works is scheduled for January 2015, with construction expected to start in March 2015,” Mr Emerson said. Gympie MP David Gibson said he was pleased funding for these works had been confirmed. “We’ve been working as
a community to achieve real safety outcomes at this location, and I’m thrilled these works have been announced,” Mr Gibson said. Gympie Regional Council acting mayor Tony Perrett said works would involve road widening and establishing new medians. “Further intersection works at Venardos Avenue and Six Mile Creek rest area will also be carried out,” Cr Perrett said. The safety works on the highway south of Gympie will cost $26.5 million, with the Australian Government contributing up to $21.2 million and the Queensland Government contributing $5.3 million.

THE Australian and Queensland governments have announced an early beginning to urgent safety works on the Bruce Highway south of Gympie. Federal Wide Bay MP Warren Truss said the project will be permanently integrated with future works which will take place as part of the Cooroy to Curra upgrade. “Upgrades to the Keefton Road intersection and to the access arrangements for the Golden Nugget service station will dramatically improve safety for all motorists, including local traffic and trucks moving freight along the highway,” Mr Truss said. “From 2000 to 2010 there were 82 crashes along this sec-

Heat on broiler farm By JONATHON HOWARD A GROUP of Cooroy residents are desperately trying to stop the development of an intensive broiler farm at Top Forestry Road, which is pending a final ruling from Noosa Council in 2015. A petition of those living on the haul route showed more than 90 per cent of locals were opposed to the intensive chicken farm, while a lesser group has expressed support for the farm. The proposed chicken-growing operation at Ridgewood is to house 100,000 fewer birds at 230,000 per year and is to be built in two stages, starting with five sheds instead of the original eight. The “no broiler farm Cooroy" campaign organiser Rod Ritchie said a decision around the propos-
al was likely to be delayed until March. “Since there has been no response from the applicant to Noosa Council’s 22 September request, and because the answers will need appraisal by council staff and the community, it is unlikely that the application will be decided before the March 2015 ordinary meeting,“ he said. Mr Ritchie highlighted several areas that remained for consideration including proposed improvements to Top Forestry Road, an alternative haul route, alternative chicken pick-up times, odour impacts on five properties and an infrastructure agreement. “Other issues not yet fully addressed include: noise and odour modelling that takes in the unique topography and common temperature inversions; site operations ef-
fects 24 hours, not just daytime; lack of on-site dust modelling; miscalculations, contradictory data and omissions on traffic data; and details of litter removal and shed cleaning process,“ he said. “As we go into another Christmas without a decision, it’s worth remembering that the main reasons for the delays for the decision have been consistently changing applications, tardy responses to council requests for information, and a total lack of communication between the applicant and the local community. “But, since we also understand that the current council requests for information could produce a planning report that goes against us, we continue to look for information that proves to council that this application is based on poor scientific methodology.”
Mr Ritchie said there was a need to convince a couple of Noosa councillors, who he said appeared to be supporting the broiler farm proposal, that they must seriously consider all aspects of the application and “listen to community concerns". “We have our local petition, now we need other people living in the Noosa Shire to sign our new online petition at the top right of this page. Please sign now and encourage all those shire residents you know to also sign before we close the petition in late January," he said. HAVE YOUR SAY: Do you support an intesive chicken broiler farm at Top Forestry Road in Cooroy? Email your letters or comments to newsdesk@noosatoday.net. au
Scouts cheered by club’s grand gift NOOSA Sea Scouts are all smiles at their endof-year barbecue get-together on the Noosa river. They seemed even happier when president of the Noosa Beach Classic Car Club, Malcolm King, second from right, presented them with a cheque for $1000 as part of the car club’s many donations to charity organisations and worthy causes in the local community. Malcolm said the Sea Scouts provided food service at the car club’s hill climb event and did a wonderful job. The donation, he said, made the enormous effort put into running organisations like these just a little easier.

’Tis the season for jolly sports Benny’s
beat BENNY PIKE
MERRY Christmas to you all. I hope you had a terrific day opening presents in the company of the family. The warmth and security of family and friends has certainly come to the fore after the terrible Martin Place siege. Let’s think of the families who will be without Katrina Dawson and Tori Johnson, who sadly were the casualties of that awful event. On a brighter note, Noosa and the Sunshine Coast have already been given presents in the form of sport training camps, in the lead up to Christmas. The AFL has been the biggest contributor with the Brisbane Lions, premiers Hawthorn and GWS Giants pounding the fields/beaches in their annual pre-season routine. The Giants took over Noosa Beach numerous times in finetuning the old and especially the new boys in preparation for the 2015 season and the Western Bulldogs will be here in the new year. The Noosa Aquatics pool has been home to the New
Zealand Paralympic Squad for the past few weeks, and rest assured there will be plenty more International squads in the pool in the lead-up to the all our Coast triathlons and more so the Gold Coast Games 2018. Golf also received a massive boost with tournaments at Palmer Coolum, Peregian Springs, Twin Waters and Noosa Springs. The events covered all ages in a sport the Coast is very good at. Palmer Coolum hosted the final round of the Greg Norman Masters, 92 players from China, Noumea, New Zealand, and all Aussie states. The highlight was two holes-in-one scored by girls on the par-three second and and 11th holes. Noosa Springs played host to the qualifying event for players wanting to play on the national PGA Tour. The Legends category was very covered with rounds at the rebranded Noosa Club and Peregian Springs. The coup was getting former local and British open winner Ian Baker-Finch to play and speak at the presentation dinner. Ian also spent some time chatting to the kids at Palmer Resort before his round, as
you’d expect he was welcomed. The every day club players tackled the course and bad weather in the annual national final of the Holden Scramble at Twinnie’s. Maroochy Beach was a happy hunting ground for Noosa’s Jordan Mercer in the annual Maroochy Classic surf carnival. Jordan delighted the crowd and Noosa supporters taking out the Board and was dynamic in the Ironwoman. In not-so-friendly conditions she held off a determined challenge to cross the line with ease. Fellow Noosaite Rhys Burrows a late inclusion nearly pulled off a win in the board final, just failing to catch the wave that placed him second. Great news for anyone wanting to improve their singing and dancing. Recently returned local Anna Quayle is conducting after school classes in Coolum, Noosaville, Cooroy and Eumundi for anyone looking to a musical career in theatre. Anna is also fine-tuned in ballet and is hoping to put together shows in early January for musicals Hairspray and Oliver. Anyone interested can call Anna on 0466 508 489. Until next time.
Breaking down gender barriers By JONATHON HOWARD PEREGIAN Springs resident Paul Kaczykowski, 31, has been named one of only five students to be awarded the Emerging Nurse Leadership Award in 2015. The prestigious award was presented by the Australian College of Nursing at the University of the Sunshine Coast. The Emerging Nurse Leaders program provides three years of professional and personal development and is designed to support leadership skills in earlycareer nurses. Mr Kaczykowski said he was honoured to be included in the program and keen to encourage more men to enter the nursing profession. “I am proud to be studying nursing and to be making a name for myself in a profession which has largely been overlooked by many men,” he said. “There is a growing demand by patients to receive care from both male and female nurses and there are increasing leadership opportunities for those who want to play a role in breaking down any gender gaps in the profession. “USC has given me an excellent start for my nursing career and I’m looking forward to the challenges and opportunities ahead.” USC Head of School of Nursing and Midwifery As-
Peregian Springs resident Paul Kaczykowski has received an outstanding award for his nursing studies. sociate Professor Margaret Barnes said Paul’s inclusion in the program highlighted the exceptional standard of students studying Nursing Science at USC. “We would like to congratulate Paul on this achievement,” Dr Barnes said. “His success and the success of previous USC participants in this program are a reflection of USC’s commitment to instilling leadership skills in all our nursing students. “Our strategic focus on the development of nursing leaders has culminated in
the launch of new programs such as the Master of Nursing (Clinical Leadership) and the Bachelor of Health and Community Care.” Mr Kaczykowski was the second male to be offered entry into the Emerging Nurse Leaders program in its history. USC students Paula Lambert and Sonya Wallace were offered places in 2013 and 2014. Paul is the current president of the USC Nursing and Midwifery Student Group, a student mentor and member the Vice Chancellor’s Student Liaison Committee.

ON OFFER is a large comfortable family home located in the heart of Noosa, close to transport, dining, shopping and the famous Hastings Street. BOASTING five bedrooms, this spacious floorplan includes private retreats for family members as well as places to gather and spend time together. The master suite is located on the entire upper level of the residence and is the perfect retreat for parents looking to relax and unwind after a day in the sun. Large enough to include a day bed for reading and resting, the master suite also features a walk-in dressing room, private ensuite and access to a private balcony with views over the pool and river. Four more bedrooms are located downstairs in a private wing, each features built-in wardrobes and are serviced by a main bathroom. The gourmet kitchen is the heart of the home and is cleverly positioned to serve both the poolside terrace and the dining area and sits between the formal and casual living spaces. A generous family and dining room overlooks the pool and features large sliding glass doors that open out to the
waterside and poolside decks, bringing the outside in. The large outdoor deck could easily accommodate a dining suite and barbecue, plus sun lounges for making the most of local weather - the ideal space for entertaining friends on a warm summer’s night. The new owners will also be able to take their pick of relaxing beside the sparkling pool or wandering down to the sun-soaked beach or private jetty to indulge in a spot of fishing. High ceilings, voids throughout the home and glass folding or sliding doors means there is ample natural light and ventilation throughout the residence, creating year round comfort. This property also features air-conditioning, ceiling fans throughout, a double lock-up garage and a bar area in the formal dining space. All this is located just moments from Hastings Street, the business hub of The Junction and only a short drive to Gympie Terrace.

Q& A
Property Management by Karen Seskis
What makes a good property management office?
People!!! Thank you and Merry Christmas to all our clients who I have personally worked for over the last 8 years of property management here in Noosa.
Privacy and elegance IF PRIVACY and elegance are on your list of property ‘must-haves’ then look no further. This opulent Queenslander is the epitome of executive living while still making the most of Lake Macdonald’s beautiful surroundings. Set over two levels, this eight-bedroom treasure will leave you wanting for nothing with its five-acre gardens and luxurious guest wing. It's nestled just five minutes from Cooroy and 15 minutes from Noosa - this is where seclusion meets convenience on the Sunshine Coast. Boasting rich timber floors and lofted ceilings throughout, this property leads its occupants outwards to the expansive wraparound decks and outdoor dining luxuries. The versatile layout allows for numerous entertaining and dining options along with space to work, play and study.
Complete with eight bedrooms and six bathrooms, both residents and guests’ privacy and desires are catered for to the utmost detail. The executive kitchen offers traditional styling along with all the modern luxuries and ample storage, while taking in views of the grounds framed by beautiful French doors and natural light. Warm by the fireplace in winter or relax in the home’s library while the children stay entertained in the games area. Your guests can relax in their very own wing with three luxurious bedrooms, a sitting room and separate retreat all to themselves. This perfectly presented property includes a resort-sized pool suited to both exercise and relaxation. Choose to entertain guests or simply sit back with a cocktail under the gazebo by the
pool’s edge. The gated gravel drive crosses the Japanese-style bridge and leads to the fivecar garage with attached studio or workshop and private north facing gardens. The property’s perfectly manicured surrounds are rich in native wildlife and lead to Lake Macdonald’s edge, perfect for wishing away lazy afternoons.
A big thank you to our tenants who have also been fantastic and I can truly say some of you have indeed “looked after the property as if it were your own”. Merry Christmas. To our wonderful handymen who go out of their way to get work orders completed on time and do a great

Living at ease inside and out bydesign WITH DI HENSHALL
WHAT could be better than having your own personal retreat in your backyard? I’ve talked before about making your back garden, or courtyard or balcony, an extension of the living space - it is after all where we would like to be most of the year round. A couple of plastic chairs and a wonky table aren’t going to quite fit the bill for relaxing. Garden furnishings should be regarded as just as important as the furniture you choose for the indoor living spaces. We are lucky enough to live in a country that allows us to spend a great deal of time outside, so we should really recognise the impact good quality outdoor furniture has to our well-being and lifestyle. If you have a pool, it should feel like an oasis, where you can indulge by having a swim or just a float around, thinking about nothing. A well-designed pool area can be the striking focal point in any back garden and the envy of everyone who visits.
Make the most of your outdoor space so you can rest, relax and enjoy views like this. The pool area can be a perfect place to entertain in the evening - water reflects light, so placing votive candles or lanterns close to the water will enhance the fairyland-like ambience. Some of the candles could be insect repellent ones, so you don’t have to run for cover. Low voltage light kits are inexpensive and very easy to fit - place them up against tree trunks and in among plants to add to the effect. One challenge is pool fencing - by law we must make sure that the pool area is safe, but it can be difficult to determine where to put the fencing and what it does
to the overall look. Glass is the most expensive fencing, but you could consider using glass fencing only in the more prominent areas and revert back to less expensive fencing elsewhere. Often, plants end up taking over and covering some pool fencing, so going for all glass is sometimes not necessary in the long run. The most successful outdoor areas are ones that flow seamlessly

AS I WRITE this column (far earlier than normal thanks to the vagaries of the holiday season) I’m watching a rather dismal Pipeline trickle onto a monolithic sand bar that should not be there, while the sad-faced panel boys in their button-down presenter shirts do their best to talk up the fact that the world title race will most likely be decided in crappy surf. But by the time you read this, you’ll already know who won (Medina, of course), so let’s go back a week, a year, oh hell, half a lifetime! I confess to having chicken skin and a lump in my throat as big as a Cooroy hailstone when Tommy Carroll blitzed his Heritage Heat at double overhead Pipeline on 12 December As someone who has spent long enough manufacturing melodramatic exhibition heats, I well know how to tug at the heart strings, but this was something really special. The ASP Heritage Heats between champions of old are a good idea with the potential to fall very flat. Witness Pottz versus Gerr if you need proof. But then Tom Curren’s display at J-Bay more than made up for that, even though some fat guy kept drifting into shot. And then there was Tommy at Pipe. There were other surfers in the water, apparently. As if anyone cared. The Banzai Pipeline, an innocuous strip of sand and reef 300 days of the year, just along from the Ehukai Beach Park on Oahu’s North Shore, is the most storied surf location in the world, in the history of the sport. When swells of consequence push shoreward from the deep ocean trench and jack up on the three inshore reefs, incredible waves crack and spit and barrel over the razor-edged coral. On these days reputations are made, and sometimes people die. On Friday morning, 2 December, 2005, I was walking towards Pipeline from Rocky Point, nursing a ferocious hangover from too much fun at Haleiwa Joe’s, when I noticed a panic-stricken crowd at the water’s edge. They were trying in vain to resuscitate Malik Joyeux, a young Tahitian surfer I knew well from France. Malik was just 25. The North Shore stopped that day, but it was standard ops the next. Pipeline is like that. Tom Carroll is well aware of the dangers of Pipe, although he only has one small scar from
Tom Carroll master class at Pipeline, December 12, 2014. Picture: ASP it. For years he has worn a full helmet to protect his head against reef bounce. I remember the first time he surfed it, in 1978 when he was 17. We both had rooms in the Surfer Magazine house at Sunset Beach, and every morning in the grey pre-dawn, Tommy would be on the front lawn, peering down the beach, waiting for Pipe to come on. When it did, he was on it, cheekily hustling waves from the likes of Gerry Lopez and Rory Russell. Nothing much has changed. Earlier this month a small, muscular man paddled out at Pipe in front of thousands of people and owned it. Thomas Victor Carroll, aged 53, was home. Hope in the darkness FOLLOWING the shocking, tragic siege in Sydney last week, it is difficult to find anything positive to say about terror coming too close to home. Particularly when, like so many people around the country, you feel there are too few degrees of separation from it. Watching the news coverage, we saw our friend Vitek Czernuszyn supporting his best friend, Ken Johnson, laying a wreath for his son Tory at Martin Place. Vitek later wrote movingly about it on social media, hoping that positives might emerge from the darkness.Perhaps they already have. I think Premier Mike Baird was right to praise Sydney for the way its people reacted to the tragedy, and I was especially touched by the “I’ll Ride With You” campaign. At times like these, people need to be reminded that evil

NEW Year’s Eve is almost here and many of us will be hosting friends and family to celebrate the new year. Whether there are four or 40 people coming to the party, food is one of the major factors in the success of the night, as well as part of being a responsible host. Deciding what to serve can be tricky. A sit-down dinner with at least two courses will keep you in the kitchen for the best part of the night, while a buffet will create excess dishes and cleaning. Canapes, or finger foods, are a great choice. Your guests can graze on the offerings throughout the night, there is little washing up and most of the preparation can be done earlier in the day or even the night before. Everything that was old is new again, including catering for the biggest night of the year. Don’t be afraid to drag out the coloured glass serving platters, get the kabana and cheese ready to party like its 1999. Here are some simple, classic recipes to bring a little retro back to your celebrations this New Year’s Eve.

Best swings forward QUEENSLAND’S rising golf stars were shining bright at Noosa Springs as they took their best shot at qualifying for a career in tournament golf. More than 50 gun golfers hoping to gain their tour card descended on Noosa Springs last Monday (15 December) for the start of Q School, a two-stage qualifying process for entry to the PGA Tour of Australasian Tournaments 2015. Only golfers with a handicap of 2.4 or less were eligible to join and compete with the pros at the PGArun Q School. Noosa Springs was one of three Australian golf courses hosting the First Stage of Q School from 17 to 19 December. The next stages will be held concurrently at Riverside Oaks, NSW and Sandhurst Golf Club, Victoria. The cream of Australia’s golfers played three qualifying rounds to get into the final stage at Victoria Golf Club on 6-9 January, with only 30 per cent of competitors advancing to the next level. The stakes are high as the winner of Q School will gain an exemption category for the 2015 season equivalent to winning a Tier 2 Tournament on the PGA Tour of Australasia, plus the opportunity to compete professionally at a local and international level via the OneAsia Tour. Noosa Springs executive general manager Mark Brady said it was a great thrill to be selected by

Legends tee off By JONATHON HOWARD MAJOR winners Wayne Grady and Ian Baker-Finch teed off in the inaugural John Madill Toyota Legends Tour Pro Am at the Phil Scott-designed championship golf course at Peregian Springs Golf Club on Wednesday 17 December. Other Australian golfing legends, Terry Price, Roger Davis, Anthony Gilligan and Brian Jones plus 164 other players made up the star-studded field. Some months ago, Declan McCollam CEO of the Peregian Springs Golf Club contacted Mark Tickle from Noosa Golf
Club and the pair decided to work together to host two pro ams in one week. The objective was to make coming to the region as attractive as possible to players. This, plus their joint golf connections enabled them to attract some of Australian golfing’s finest. John Madill, from John Madill Toyota, major sponsor of the Peregian Springs event and a long-term supporter of the local community, looked forward to being involved. “To have two players who have won golf majors internationally in our event, is a huge coup. The courtesy patrols that we in lifesaving are now moved to extend to our widely scattered public, are and always will be faced with a few problems. First is the time that it takes to reach a situation, second having the correct location and three, having some indication of the problem. Noosa IRB captain Chris Vaughan extended the good advice to people who walk the park when he said: "Some people will come across a situation where they can see people in trouble. Quickly grab a mobile, dial triple-zero and speak slowly. Give the location,

the situation and if possible the number of people. Above all when finished, stay where you are, because you may be needed to direct the IRB team. To attract their attention don’t just wave your arm, grab a towel, a shirt, anything large and wave it. But once again remember, stay where you are." In Alexandria Bay there two emergency alarms - one at the northern end and one at the southern end of the beach. But remember this is a very isolated beach and rescue teams have to come from Sunshine Beach or further away from Noosa Heads. Sunshine Beach club captain Scott Summers said: “If you visit our region please come to us and bathe

It is unpatrolled and very dangerous.” Always remember the people in the red and yellow uniforms are there for your protection so speaking to you and offering advice is part of their job. Remember getting advice may prevent you having to be rescued, and as any lifesaver will tell you it is better to prevent a rescue then having to perform one. By JACK MANGROVE IN the river, the mangrove jack mayhem is continuing with anglers reporting that this is looking like one of the best “jack” seasons for a long time. One such location that appears to be full of jacks at the moment is the stretch of water between the lake and it really has to been seen to be believed. The edges are lined with fallen trees and deep drop-off which all add up to an excellent jack spot. But this is not the only place to capture a jack, anywhere there is good structure you will more than likely find a jack waiting for a passing morsel of food, the trick is to make that morsel your lure. Elsewhere in the river, the mouth has been producing some nice whiting and bream as well as a good array of trevally species, the trevally follow the bait in on the tide, so best to plan your attack in line with the incoming tide. For the offshore anglers, the mackerel and tuna are in good numbers with some of the best pelagic fishing occurring on the closer reefs there are some great baitfish schools around at the moment and as is always the case, “find the bait, find the fish!” Small shiny metal slices and soft plastics are always productive in this situation and it definitely pays to have a few in your tackle box for when the fish start to feed. For the bottom bouncers, coral trout, and sweetlip have been plentiful with other tasty odds and ends are being caught. As always having a “floated” bait out the back of the boat can be really effective, all manner of thing such as wahoo and bill fish fall to this technique. On behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures.

AS a courtesy to our visitors over Christmas the local media has for years spread the message regarding beach safety and now we at Noosa Today continue that courtesy. Our region is blessed with having some of the most beautiful sandy beaches one would ever wish to walk. However several of these are not only in isolated areas but are also unpatrolled and in one particular instance - Alexandria Bay - is extremely dangerous. The message has not changed for years. If you go to the beach, bathe between the flags. If you go for a walk through Noosa's National Park and decide to bath at an unpatrolled beach, think twice and look long and hard before doing so. If you have small children, at least leave them on the beach. The scenic walk through the park is naturally inviting and we want our tourists to take the family and enjoy it all. However sanity should prevail. We want our visitors to be aware that - despite the modern-day rescue craft that are seen on our beaches - they are not always available for emergencies at out-of-the-way isolated areas. Priority for rescue craft such as the IRB and Jet Rescue Ski is and always will be the area between the flags. If weather conditions indicate that a change at the flagged area is possible, the patrol captain
