Grieving mum writes the book on road tragedy By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN THE LAUNCH of a Geelong mother’s book about the loss of her 16 year-old son to road trauma has issued a stark warning to motorists in the holiday period. Dr Fiona Reidy’s Weeping Woman - Finding Hope and Courage Following Road Trauma details her family’s journey since Rory McCaffrey died in a high-speed crash on the Bellarine Peninsula on 29 December 2011. Dr Reidy hoped opening up about her tragedy would help others find strength following the loss of loved ones to road trauma. Through her own story and the experiences of six other women who lost children in road accidents, the book explores the bond between mother and child and the devastating grief when it’s broken in tragic circumstances. Rory died in a midnight ride with an unlicensed friend who had taken his parents’ car without permission. Rory died instantly when the car lost control at high speed and struck a tree. “I went to bed the mother of three delightful children and by 5am I was a griefstricken mother of two bereft girls, Dr Reidy said. “That the long-developed bond between a mother and child could be so cruelly severed in an uncontrollable instant is literally heartbreaking, gut wrenching and breathtaking. Dr Reidy, husband Tony McCaffrey and two daughters Molly and Keeley have set up the Rory McCaffrey Reconciliation Collaborative. “We have incorporated Rory’s support for Aboriginal reconciliation into our lives as a way of keeping alive the values that we shared with him, Dr Reidy said. Her book is available at bookpal.com.au.

A $4 BILLION township planned for Moolap faces its first serious obstacle as environmentalists target the former saltworks site for a wetlands conservation reserve to protect migratory birds. Geelong Environment Council (GEC) and Queenscliff Environment Forum want legislative safeguards for 18 wetlands across the Bellarine Peninsula, including the Cheetham salt fields and Point Henry. They have called on Environment Minister and Bellarine MP Lisa Neville to order Victorian Environment Assessment Council (VEAC) draft protections for the sites. Tens of thousands of migratory and resident waterbirds thrive on the wetlands, some species travelling from as far as Siberia. “Threats such as population growth and development, new infrastructure, effects of climate change and pollution from run-off into the wetlands could cause irreversible damage to their habit, GEC president Joan Lindros said. The environmental plan
challenged Ridley Corporation’s proposed Nelson Cove, with 5000 homes, especially where it involves 290 hectares of Crown land, she said. “There’s a lot of fighting to go on there, a lot of water to go under the bridge. “Records show thousands of birds in the Cheetham area. It’s a really important area, they’ve come such a long distance and need to fatten up quickly. “They need to be able to move across the peninsula to the different wetlands. They also go across to Avalon, Point Lillias, and move around according to tides, weather and food supply. “We really have one of the very important wetlands areas here. Focussing only Crown land, the reserves plan includes Balyang, Jerringot, Point Richards, Edwards Point, Sand Island, Lakers Cutting, Lake Victoria, Begola, Reedy Lake, Lake Connewarre, Lake Murtnagurt, Breamlea, Karaaf, Blue Water and Lake Lorne wetlands. A Ridley spokesman said the group would work to meet all demands. Continued page 3

Louts, druggies, thieves face new-year crackdown
In brief
Cops call in resources
Plover helpers
POLICE have warned they will be out in force after Christmas to crack down on loutish behaviour. They have also called up extra resources to nab drink or drug-affected drivers on local roads. Inspector Peter Seel said police had been planning for 12 months how to handle New Year’s celebrations at hotspots like Geelong, Torquay and Lorne’s Falls Festival.
The Surf Coast police chief said the coastal population would swell by up to 100,000 over the holiday period, so resources would be boosted to filter out criminals and troublemakers. Insp Seel said police would come from Geelong and Colac to boost numbers on the coast during the busy periods. “We’ll be targeting anti-social behaviour relating to criminal damage, assaults and thefts from motor cars,” he said.
Insp Seel believed tourists were more relaxed while on holiday and could let their guard down, leaving valuables in unlocked vehicles. Others were just in a hurry to rush off to the beach, he said. Police in plain clothes would patrol busy areas to catch thieves targeting items in parked cars. Police on bikes would also have a high-profile presence, Insp Seel said. “We’ll really be targeting antisocial behaviour, especially people
drinking in places they should not be.” Insp Seel said a police “Summer Stay” strategy would clamp down on offences between Christmas and the new year. “We’ll be targeting drink-driving, drug driving, speeding.” Insp Seel also warned visitors to avoid distractions as they travelled along unfamiliar territory, taking in the sights on winding coastal roads. Distraction and fatigue could be fatal, he said.

Green plan block From page 1 He suggested the proposed VEAC study could help inform Ridley’s own planning. “We don’t really offer comment on what Gerelong Environmental Council is proposing - it’s really a matter for the minister. “In terms of the bay end of site, there are fairly detailed planning and environmental processes and the proper process will be run.“ Many of the migratory species across the peninsula are already protected under four international agreements. Bellarine wetland birds include rare, endangered, threatened and critically endangered species such as the orange-bellied parrot. More than 45 threatened species include the 30g red-necked stint, sandpipers, curlews, knots and snipes.
Lifeline all ears as staff prepare to manage calls By PAUL MILLAR CHRISTMAS joy is lost on many over the holiday period, darkened by a cloud of depression and desperation. While many families gather in celebration, for others it’s a time of isolation. And for the volunteers at Lifeline it’s a period in which they’ll be kept busy on the phones, offering support to anybody in need. Julie Christopher, from the Barwon-Geelong region of Lifeline, said the support agency expected the phones to be constantly ringing over the socalled festive season. “It’s always a busy time,” Ms Christopher said. “For many Australians Christmas is a time of relaxing and enjoyment, while for others it’s a period when there are financial stresses and isolation.’’ The agency would be busier than ever in the Geelong region this festive season after a series of large-scale job losses in the city’s manufacturing sector at Ford and Alcoa in particular. Ms Christopher said the season was also when the death of a family member lingered in the thoughts of many. “Certainly, the call demand does increase and we have volunteers available to support people through Christmas and the new year,” she said. Lifeline expects to handle 18,000 calls nationally between the Christmas and New Year period. “There are all kinds of issues but sometimes people just need to talk things through and listen to their problems and feelings,” Ms Christopher said. “We listen and help them to consider their options in moving forward with their situation.” Relationship problems were a consistent issue in calls to the support group, Ms Christopher said. Young people were increasingly using the agency’s online chat support, she said, while across the nation Lifeline expected to have handled one million calls by the time the year draws to a close. She hoped a new recruiting campaign would attract more volunteers to the support group. “We really do appreciate our volunteers but we could do with more and we are going to do more training in March.” Ms Christopher said prospective volunteers could access details on Lifeline’s website. Twenty-four-hour crisis support is available by phoning Lifeline or 13 11 14 or visiting lifeline.org. au/crisischat.

Jon’s focus on frank input about Australia By NESS JENNINGS LOCAL cinematographer and photographer Jon Frank is turning his lens to cataloguing modern-day Australia and wants keen-eyed Geelong residents to help. Jon is seeking suggestions from welltravelled Geelongites about people, places and events he should catch while gathering material for his next book. “It’s an ambitious project but by no means is it authoritative or all-encompassing,” he explained. “It’s more a hint of what we might mean as a nation and where we’re at now. We tend to hang onto a lot of ideas from last century and it’ll be interesting to see if they’re still relevant.” Jon wants Geelong’s journey-men and women to alert him to people, places or events they may have stumbled upon in their travels. “I love travelling to new places and sitting and watching the locals. I try to react to what I see and allow the camera to capture that moment of urban exploration. “The natural environment influences me, crowds of people interest me – specifically, how they interact and what they do. “I’ve always travelled but I have a family now and I’ve based myself in Torquay since the late 1990s. I’m finding the call of the community – the Australian community - quite strong at this point in my career, so I’ve decided to catalogue it with the help of locals Australia-wide. “Creating a book capturing the culture of modern Australia and Australians is a long-term goal – it’ll take me more than a year to go around and visit the places people want me to see. “I like the idea of having a body of work people have helped me create – a body of work that will log a period of time in our collective Australian history and, hopefully, portray it in all of its positive and negative reality. “I want to create a body of work that’s long-lasting and I want people to have an impact on what I shoot.

it. I want to shoot it. I want to see what you see. “It might be ugly, it may be beautiful – I want to see it all.” Jon asked anyone who wanted to contribute to email him at info@jonfrank.org or follow his interactive blog, Australia – The Book, at jonfrank.org/Australians.
GEELONG commuters still need a second Yarra River crossing despite the demise of the East West Link project, say local proponents. Premier Daniel Andrews has ordered a halt to work on East West Link after revealing the previous state government’s business case for the project. The new Labor government accused the coalition of fraud for hiding the “flawed“ business case. Labor said the project would return a loss-making 45 cents in the dollar under Infrastructure Australia criteria and take 56 years of tolling to pay back its $6.8 billion construction cost. The business case also revealed the western half of the proposed link would carry only 60,000 vehicles, so congestion would not have been reduced as much as claimed. Local councils alliance body G21 made East West Link a priority project and Geelong Chamber of Commerce also supported the project. G21 chief Elaine Carbines said the body had always lobbied for a second crossing of the Yarra and Maribyrnong rivers to improve road access to Melbourne and an alternative to the Westgate Bridge. “We believe that the growth of our region and its economic prosperity is compromised because of constrained road access to Melbourne from the west. We respect the new Labor State
Government’s commitment not to proceed with the East West Link project and welcome the proposed West Gate Distributor in the short-term but will continue to advocate for the vital second river crossing.” Chamber head Bernadette Uzelac said a second river crossing was essential. “Regardless of the current business case findings, a second crossing is still an important priority. “It needs to be explored more fully to develop the best strategy to deliver the project which would create many hundreds of jobs for Victoria and generate positive economic flow on impacts for Geelong.” But Committee for Geelong chief Rebecca Casson said the change of government offered an opportunity to rethink transport infrastructure. “There should be a significant investment in public transport to ease the pressure on roads and commuter traffic,” Ms Casson said. “While we supported the idea of a second river crossing, we believe there should be greater emphasis on public transport. “The regional rail link is a great project but is not the panacea and the 20-minute timetabling (of trains) is a really good outcome. “But for too long Geelong has been told what it will have and we want Geelong to have greater prominence in decision making.”

HOT SPOTS: Water Police on patrol off the Bellarine Peninsula.
Cops hit waves By PAUL MILLAR
1166550-CB49-14
WATER police will have strike teams on standby at Queenscliff to crack down on bay hoons over the busy summer period. Acting Sergeant Anthony Rietveld said police would cover all bases but would make their presence felt in hot spots like Ocean Grove and the Barwon River estauary. “If we have any issues we’ll have response teams available,” he said. Act Sgt Rietveld warned that police on jet skis would monitor speed on the water, with jetskiers exceeding a five-knot limit among swimmers and within 200m of shore to be punished. “Police will be out there and
if you do the wrong thing you can expect to be spoken to.” Act Sgt Rietveld urged recreational boaters to make sure they had appropriate safety equipment on board, including up-to-date flares, life jackets and fire extinguishers. “And remember alcohol and boats do not mix.” Police urged greater care on the water after an increase in fatalities last summer. Nine people died in marinerelated incidents between September 2013 and April 2014 - up five on the year before. Water Police Senior Sergeant Mark O’Rourke said the most common causes were drownings and vessel collisions. “Last summer was a particu-
larly bad season with nine lives claimed on the water, six of these occurred in January alone. We also had 16 serious injuries caused by marine incidents,” Sen Sgt O’Rourke said. “Summer is officially here and we know there’ll be more people using the waterways for recreational purposes. “We’re concerned that people aren’t taking the right precautions when getting involved in water activities. “Fatal or serious incidents don’t just happen in open water or out in the bays; things can easily go wrong in any type of water including lakes, inlets, rivers and basins. “Everyone has the responsibility to put their safety first.”

Exporter calls for relaxed rules By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN GRAINCORP wants reduced regulation of its Geelong bulk terminal to make it more competitive. The company’s application to Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) follows Bunge Australia announcing plans for its own bulk grain export terminal in Geelong. The Independent reported in September that residents had slammed the proposed multi-mil-
Competition pressure builds at Geelong port lion-dollar development. North Shore Residents Group lodged an extensive objection, claiming the proposed facility was dangerous and a traffic hazard that would add 100 to 200 truck movements a day. GrainCorp told the ACCC it faced “strong competition” from the proposed Bunge terminal and other facilities.
GrainCorp’s submission said the Bunge’s facility would escape the same regulations. “Granting an exemption for its Geelong terminal will place GrainCorp on a level playing field with alternative and competing markets that are not subject to regulation,” the submission said. GrainCorp said reducing regulations for its terminal would
lower compliance costs. Bunge’s new port terminal would be exempt from the regulations and able to negotiate more freely with customers, the submission said. “GrainCorp’s Geelong facility (is) currently competitively constrained.” GrainCorp said available capacity at its Geelong terminal
Locals offer new ratings AUSTRALIA’S film industry is better placed than critics suggest but needs a new rating system to properly gauge its success, according to a Geelong media expert. Deakin University Professor Deb Verhoeven said arguments about the death of Australia’s film industry were wrong. Box office numbers were not a definitive measure of success, especially as viewing options expanded, she said. Prof Verhoeven wrote on academic website The Conversation that Deakin researchers had been working on a project recasting the way success and failure were measured in the film industry. They proposed a film impact rating (FIR) of “the three Cs of film impact – coverage, commentary and commercial performance”. Geelong has increasingly promoted its credentials as a film industry location, with a growing number of movies filmed or located within the region. Prof Verhoeven said the industry needed better diagnostic tools.
was never fully utilised across the year. Commissioner Cristina Cifuentes said the ACCC was seeking views on the application. Similar applications have been lodged by GrainCorp for its Portland terminal and Emerald for its Port of Melbourne terminal, she noted. “The port operators submit
MAKING A SCENE: Eileen Jenkins, Beryl Stott, Annie McDonald, Diane Hodson and Pammi Pryor will show their artisic wares in January.
Tidal wave of art sweeps up Eclectic ladies By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN THE ECLECTICS’ Tidal sounds more like a pop group’s album than an art exhibition. But the group of Bellarine Peninsula artists decided on the Eclectics name because of their diverse backgrounds and artistic styles. Sculptor Beryl Stott said the five artistic friends discovered over coffee that their artistic endeavours took different forms.
Custom Made in Geelong
“We found that we are all like-minded but with quite different artistic expressions, so we thought that would make an interesting exhibition,” Beryl recalled. “It’s a bit different from exhibitions where the artists are all similar. This way there is something for everyone.” Pammi Pryor is a botanical artist with a love of watercolour, Annie McDonald is a textile artist, weaving magic with coloured
silks, Eileen Jenkins paints beautiful scenery from around St Leonards, Diane Hodson is a beach babe who paints the ocean and Beryl Stott loves to sculpt in clay. Each artist has six initial pieces in the show but patrons can purchase and take pieces immediately. The exhibition runs from 10am until 4pm throughout January at Drysdale Community Centre.
that their Victorian terminals compete against each other and that this limits their ability to exercise market power. “The operators also argue that the ports have excess export capacity and that their ability to exercise market power is limited by the domestic market, container exports, and prospective port developments.” Ms Cifuentes said the ACCC wanted public submissions by 30 January.
Road safety call for TAC GEELONG motorists have been urged to think of their families and friends over the holiday season. Transport Accident Commission chief Janet Dore said extra traffic, stress and the festive season added to road risks. “Sadly, it hasn’t been a great year on the roads in Geelong and the Surf Coast, with 11 killed in the past 12 months,” she said. “Any road trauma is devastating to local communities, so we’re calling on every road user to do everything they can to be safe every time they make a trip.” Ms Dore said driving safely was particularly crucial during holiday periods. She advised “powernaps” if drowsy, sticking closely to speed limits and planning a “safe way home“ from social events. “We want everyone in Geelong and the Surf Coast to be present to celebrate this festive season with their family and friends, so it’s important every road user thinks about what’s important to them.”

BOUQUETS to Geelong and its people. As a relative newcomer, I commend everyone for the wonderful Christmas festivities. I embraced all the cheer, happiness and colour of my first Christmas with the floating tree, the City Hall lights and the many amazing displays on homes. Proud To Live Here, Newtown
PROPOSALS to convert Customs House to a museum (Independent, 12 December) are hardly the stuff of heart attacks. A team from the museum first measured it up as a new site in the mid ‘90s. Even using three floors it was too small, inconveniently subdivided and with limited parking for tour buses or people with disabilities, who couldn’t get inside anyway. It was again mooted in 2007/2008 when council wanted the Osborne House stables for a restaurant. Disabled access was added but the other problems remained. During his previous stint as a councillor, Tony Ansett regularly visited Geelong Regional Museum, which was being set up in Osborne House, and the idea of using Customs House for the museum was brought up. It was also suggested as a home for Geelong Historical Society. When Padric Fisher became National Wool Museum director he wanted to use Customs House as a museum but, unlike a fish, the size hadn’t increased with talking about it. The maritime museum had talked about it and the cost of moving it was approaching six figures. It might be the good life as a councillor or the angle of the Independent’s photograph but the risk of a heart attack doesn’t appear to lie with the museum staff. M Dunn Geelong Maritime Museum curator
Evil of the warmists LET’S hope Goshen Watts’ opening climate statement (Letters, 12 December) was true. There’s a lot of the Goebbels principle around – that lies repeated often enough become believed as truth - but it’s not coming from Alan Barron. Mr Watts revealed the true extent of his global warming theory knowledge with his “reputable source of information statement. The first, the IPCC, featured the Michael Mann hockey-stick graph in a report. The graph conveniently airbrushed out large variations in temperature in the past 1000 years, leaving only the increase since the mid-1800s. US courts forced Mr Mann to disclose his data and other researchers found that the data didn’t matter – his model produced a hockey stick whatever it
Email: editorial@geelongindependent.com.au PO Box 407, Geelong, 3220 Fax: 5249 6799
was fed. The IPCC quietly removed the graph the following year. Next is the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM), which recently changed from Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) to the Pacific Ocean Atmospheric Model for Australia (POAMA). ANN is based on past history and has been good at predicting extreme weather events. POAMA was justified on the basis that, as climate changes, ANN will become inaccurate. Well, ANN is still accurate, so, by the BOM’s own logic, climate hasn’t changed any more than it has done in the past. Then there’s the Climate Council. Contrary to its dire predictions during the drought, rain returned. The council’s justification was that it was okay to exaggerate to get the message across. Ruling the world on the basis of convenient untruths about the climate is evil. John Mole Highton
Black ban Barron OVER many years Alan Barron has exhibited a complete ignorance of climate science. This was none more telling than in his recent letter to the Independent, in which he described carbon dioxide as an unimportant greenhouse gas because of its low concentrations. This betrayed ignorance of greenhouse effect physics. It is simply unacceptable for a serial letter-writer like Mr Barron to offer his opinions about climate change yet be so uninformed about the basic science. It betrays a mind purely ideologically driven and I call on the Independent to cease publishing his letters. Freedom of speech is one thing. Continual misleading of people away from settled science is something else again. I also feel it is an abuse of the use of letters to the editor. I note the Los Angeles Times now refuses to publish climate-change-denial letters. It would also give those of us who feel we must correct Mr Barron’s misinformation a well-needed break from this continual tedium. Dr Ray Black Belmont

Rock the holidays
Chloe Krivan and Elise Sim enjoy their summer school holidays on Geelong’s waterfront.
THE Rock Adventure Centre is open over school holidays with indoor climbing in a safe, controlled environment. Indoor rock climbing is terrific low-impact exercise, using all muscles simultaneously. Parents who don’t want to climb can still be involved by holding their children’s safety ropes while they climb. It’s also a great option for grandparents to entertain grandchildren during holidays. The Rock’s climbing walls are sculptured and textured to resemble the real thing. Up to 12 metres high, the walls are studded with coloured climbing holds of various sizes and shapes. Each climber wears a harness with a safety rope attached. The rope belay system provides a safe, controlled descent when the climber wants to come down or in the event of a fall. All rope handlers must be aged at least 13 years and go through an orientation and safety lesson before they can begin. Instructors are always available at The Rock to teach firsttimers. Instruction is included in the entry price. The climbing walls are designed to accommodate all levels, from beginners to experts. The Rock also has a “boul-

Parents can send their children up the wall for a change at The Rock Adventure Centre. dering” area with short climbing walls only a few feet off wellpadded flooring, so no safety rope or partner is required. The Rock will be open from midday for seven days a week during school holidays. Children’s holiday sessions run from 2pm to 4pm each Monday to Friday over holidays and are ideal for primary-age children. Bookings are recommended. More information is available by visiting rockadventures. com.au, phoning 5221 3101 or visiting The Rock at the extreme river end of Pakington St, Newtown.

THIS summer is the ideal time to inspect four exclusive waterfront lots now on the market at Curlewis. The prime lots in the prestigious Baywater Estate are the only residential blocks available on the Bellarine Peninsula with absolute bay frontage available. Each has sweeping, uninterrupted views across Port Phillip Bay to the You Yangs. Three of the lots in Beach Vista Dve are priced from $645,000 to $725,000. The fourth comes with a doublestorey waterfront JG King Homes residence and is priced at $1.55 million. Never been occupied, the home has been used as the estate’s sales office. Development manager Richard
Bisinella says construction of the estate is well advanced, with stage three due for completion next month. “More than 50 lots in the initial three stages have been sold,” Mr Bisinella says. “The estate’s first residents are enjoying their first summer in their new homes.” Baywater is the only residential estate on the Bellarine with house blocks fronting the bay. The cliff-top estate features a large foreshore park with easy access to the quiet beach via a new boardwalk. Two new playgrounds - one spectacularly sited on the foreshore and the second in a park along Griggs Creek - are open for use by residents and visitors.
Two perspectives of the bay views from the new Curlewis blocks.

Camping experts stock huge range THE REGION’S only independent camping retailer is open at Breakwater with top-quality brands at competitive prices. Camping Megastore owners Geoff and Leigh Chandler use their outdoor experience, retail skill and IT expertise to offer the best shopping experience in Geelong. Camping Megastore stocks a huge range, with brands like Oztrail, Black Wolf, Coleman, Companion, Gasmate and Oztent plus a diverse selection of specialist camping suppliers. Geoff says the range has around 140 tents, 100 different sleeping bags, various bedding options, tarps, poles, packs, furniture, lighting, books and toilets. “Most importantly, we also know what works and how to use it,” he says. “We’ve worked hard with our suppliers to develop the range and are proud to be independent, employing locals and keeping money in Geelong.” A self-confessed bush mechanic, Geoff built several trailers for family trips around Australia, the latest sixmetres long, to carry all their equipment. “We’ve done lots of hiking and camping, so we know the touring side of it right down to building our own camping trailers.” Camping Megastore is at 2/30 Leather St, behind Breakwater Kitchens – look out for the big chair and flag.
South Geelong’s new Airodrome will be heaps of fun for all ages during school holidays.

Dial A Doctor staying on call
Dial A Home Doctor Service will be available throughout the festive season.
THE LAUNCH of a Dial A Home Doctor Service in Geelong this month was positive for the area, says the service’s community awareness manager. “We’ll definitely be operating during the Christmas and new-year period because this will be a busy time for families, visitors and retirees,” Barbara Burstall says. “Within my role, I make contact with medical centres, chemists, respite, community care services, nursing homes and retirement villages in the region. If your organisation would like me to send through promotional material, contact me on 0419 236 393 or email hb@dahd.com.au.”
Testimonials from clients of Dial A Home Doctor Service are available at dahd. com.au. Booking a Dial A Home Doctor is easy, Barbara says. “We have a number of options when booking the service. You can either call 13 99 99 or book online through our website, dahd.com.au. “It’s suitable for any ailments less than a trauma category four or five, so the list includes general pain, illness, headache, cold and flu. When residents call the Dial A Home Doctor service patient’s needs are assessed by triage over the phone.
“If the situation’s identified as an emergency, they’re instructed to call triple zero.” All the service’s doctors are fully experienced, qualified and registered with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Chaperone drivers take the doctors to each appointment so they can focus primarily on the patient’s needs. “As a new service to the area, we’re extremely happy and thankful with the positive feedback from the community. We wish all past, present, and future patients a safe and happy Christmas.”

Now, 73 years after she first flew into battle, this grand old warhorse will soar skyward again. At Avalon the classic bomber will take part in a series of flying displays and also be available for inspection on the ground. The Airshow will be the first major observance of the centenary of the Gallipoli landings and will have as its main theme ‘Saluting the heroes of the sky’. The Australian International Airshow has scheduled public sessions on the afternoon of 27 February and all-day the following Saturday and Sunday.

The Hudson then served for a brief period with No 32 Squadron off the east coast of Australia, later operating out of Milne Bay, Papua New Guinea, carrying out bombing, armed reconnaissance and patrol missions. War’s end saw the versatile Hudson involved in survey work for the RAAF. Hudsons were part of the air forces in many nations including Britain and the USA. All up, 2941 were built, of which 247 were operated by the RAAF. Armament consisted of up to nine Vickers and Browning machine guns and a cluster of 10 250 and 100-pound bombs.

NICKNAMED the boomerang because of her ability to withstand enemy fire, the Hudson bomber will grace the skies again at Avalon’s 2015 airshow. The famous bomber is the last of her classic line still capable of taking to the air. Manufactured quickly in the US as the Allies prepared for war, the bomber was delivered to Royal Australian Air Force on 5 December 1941, two days before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour. Early war-time duties included searches for Japanese submarines off the coast of Western Australia in the months after the sinking of HMAS Sydney.

Big crowds flocked to last year’s Geelong Caravan Camping and Outdoor Living Show.
Great outdoor show returns
GEELONG Caravan Camping and Outdoor Living Show will make a triumphant return in 2015. Spanning four days from 22 to 25 January at Geelong Showgrounds, including the Australia Day weekend, the show will be bigger and better with the inclusion of the showground arena and twice as many exhibitors. The very latest in caravans, pop-tops, camper trailers, motorhomes and campervans will be on display, along with the hottest trends in tents, camping gear and every outdoor accessory imaginable.
Family entertainment will be high on the agenda with free kids’ rides all day, plus the popular Yamaha Super Tank Fishing Show, which reeled in big crowds at the 2014 show. The purpose-built 13.7m, glass-sided fishing tank is filled with live barramundi, giving spectators a fish-eye view of all the angling action. Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the show and shaded by leafy green foliage and dotted with picnic tables, a “mini Mecca of good taste” will feature purveyors of fine food with tongue-tantalizing treats.
Boutique wines and beers from Otway Estate, home of Prickly Moses Brewery, will be on hand to make sure thirsts are well and truly quenched. Geelong Caravan Camping and Outdoor Living Show will open daily at 10am. Tickets are available from the gate for $15 or $12 for concession card-holders. Admittance is free for children aged under 15. Car parking is complementary. More information is available at caravancampingoutdoorliving. com.au/geelong-show.

Mill about for bargains ts Six goble
Elissa Friday
DRIVING along the Bellarine Highway, I decided to stop in and explore the Amazing Mill Markets. Amazing is a good description because it’s huge and full to the brim with vintage clothes, furniture, antiques and more. I walked in, stood still, looked around and thought: “I could easily spend the whole day in here, what fun!” Then came the unexpected homely aroma of baking in the air, which prompted me to scan the market to figure out where it was coming from. Soon I discovered, slightly hidden toward the back of the market, a cosy but modern-looking café with a beautiful glass display cabinet of cakes and savouries. Yum yum! At that point I knew I would become a regular frequenter of this joint – there was no reason to leave with all these necessities under the one roof. Feeling in the spirit of Christmas, I began spotting items that would make really cool gifts, like a set of six vintage goblets all in different colours and priced at just $65 for the set. They would certainly be an alternative to the usual wine or champagne glasses. It might sound a bit pricey until you realise they aren’t made anymore, so they’re pretty rare nowadays. Stylish red purple and blue candle holders caught my eye for just $20 each. Maybe they could be used as individual ice buckets for those mini bottles of champagne, which would be super cute. I had the same thoughts about a

$15 .00 retro apple ice bucket, priced at $65. It was adorable and would look great on the table at Christmas, or make an unusual gift.
Then I stumbled across a gift for myself, as you do. The red snakeskin print ‘80s-style dress, made in Australia, was a must-have at just $15.
Elastin in the fabric made it extremely com comfortable and allows room to accommodate a generous Christmas dinner. It was perfect for a vintage Christmas-style look. Handbags galore caught my eye, too. I found a gorgeous classic black Glomesh bag that would work with most outfits for just $25, and then came across a red one for $15. Quite happily wandering around, I spotted skateboards for only $20 each. What a bargain as a great gift for kids and or adults to keep them fit and occupied after all the presents are opened on Christmas Day! I could have spent the whole day browsing – there was just so much to look at. My advice: just re-fuel in the café then get back on the exciting hunt for goodies in The Amazing Mill Markets. Have fun.

Skyhooks’ Bongo beats again By NOEL MURPHY GUITARIST Bongo Starkie’s colourful frilled-neck lizard collar is one of Australian rock’s more curious 1970s images. But then, his band, Skyhooks, was not known for its shy, retiring ways. White suits and fedora, mock Tudor vests and wimples, jumpsuits, capes, wigs, boas, makeup by the bucketload the biggest Aussie band of the era had a fair clout on stage and screen alike. Forty years later, Starkie’s running the show out again with a bunch of younger musical mates to critical acclaim. The originals, he said, had either passed on, become otherwise occupied or even a tad weary of touring. Starkie’s new band, Million Dollar Riff, has resurrected the glitz and glitter, the punchy riffs and counter-riffs, and catchy chart-busting lyrics of Greg Macainsh’s original Skyhooks hits. The songs are driven by the powerhouse vocals of Laura Davidson to help kick up a ’70s revival storm. Starkie was clearly excited about it when talking to the Independent, which was unsurprising given the swag of familiar favourites in the hit-kit to draw from: Toorak Cowboy, Balwyn Calling and Carlton (Lygon Street Limbo), You Just Like Me ’Cos I’m Good in Bed, Blue Jeans, Jukebox in Siberia, Million Dollar Riff, Living in the Seventies, Horror Movie, Ego is Not a Dirty Word and Women in Uniform. “We’ve got the glam going, a bit of

I’ve glitzed the band and all the boys are wearing glitter and I’ve got the lizard collar out – it’s all happening,” he laughed. “Laura’s a great rock chick, a western suburbs girl, I found her working in AC-DSHE singing Bon Scott. She’s got
a great personality and she’s great with audiences. “We couldn’t do it without her.” Starkie said late Skyhooks frontman’s Shirley Strachan’s high-register vocals were a hard ask for any male singer but

Davidson delivered the goods in spades, making the show a “real celebration of Greg Macainsh’s songs”. Strachan died in a 2001 helicopter accident. “Over the years people have often
requested Skyhooks tunes but the fact of the matter was you really needed someone who could deliver a performance like Shirl,” Starkie said. “I’ve found that someone in Laura. She’s wonderful to perform with and can sing the hell out of these ’Hooks tunes.” Starkie, 62, said he had developed considerably on the guitar skills he deployed alongside Red Symons in Skyhooks. “I was self-taught and I’d be more interested in getting feedback and then working out riffs to go with Macainsh’s tunes. I was learning on the job. “It wasn’t very good musical training, idiosyncratic I call it, but it all worked. We made a lot of records and a lot of tunes but in the end it was hard to play with others, I was so used to making up my own stuff.” Starkie hightailed it to Brazil where he found a triple-set of Chuck Berry songs and set to learning everything he could. It took a while but he figured out 30-odd songs, note for note, and feels much more comfortable with his proficiency these days. He also teamed up with Great Train Robber Ronnie Biggs while in Rio for a film documentary that, regrettably, never saw the light of day. “I’ve got some of the best footage of Ronnie in the world but it’s sitting in my garage,” Starkie said. Bob Starkie and Million Dollar Riff will perform at North Geelong’s Sphinx Hotel on 13 February.

The Australian Katy Perry Kids Tribute Show BLUESMAN: Chris Wilson on stage at last year’s inaugural Motor City Music Festival.
Picture: Geoff Dyke
Catch up with Wilson’s blues
By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN
MUSIC festivals not only bring the community together, they give musicians like rockin’ bluesman Chris Wilson a chance to catch up as well. Wilson and two of his stable of backing players will hit next March’s Motor City Music Festival Friday night stage as part of a stellar line-up. The Black Sorrows, Broderick Smith, Phil Para and Painters and Dockers are just some of the names opening the Labour Day weekend festival. “It’s exciting, it generates its own energy, Wilson enthused. “It’s only the second year but you can tell already it’ll be a goer. Word of mouth is getting around and it’s great because Geelong needs a festival like this.
Musical influences are important to Wilson, who cites Broderick Smith - playing the same night at Motor City – as a key mentor. “It’s like a meeting of the tribes, Wilson laughed. “You run into them occasionally, or work with them, but it’s always great to catch up. “Some of those people are really important, not just for what they do but for the industry. “Broderick Smith, Joe Camileri, Vika and Linda Bull (playing on the Sunday) – we all like to have a chin wag, like any community be it musos or plumbers or accountants. Catching up with fellow musos is not the only aspect of Motor City that’s exciting Wilson about playing. “Because we’ll have the band
Community Calendar
we get the chance to be on a bigger stage and crank it up, he said. “When you get a chance to let it all hang out it’s great. Wilson said he was also excited about the healthy state of the blues and roots scene. “Geelong has a strong blues society that really bats above its average. Plus, there’s a new generation coming through now and their ability is above and beyond when I was their age. “In 20 years we will look back and see if it was a golden age. Motor City Music Festival runs from 6 to 9 March at Geelong Showgrounds. More information about bands and tickets is available at motorcitymusicfestival.com.au. The Independent is a sponsor of the festival.

TOO much to eat over the Christmas break? All that fine food can take its toll and it’s hardly surprising the post-festive period is regularly filled with good intentions. Bell Park’s Le Thai Chef restaurant has hit on the perfect recipe for fine diners keen to keep their waistline in check while still enjoying the best of exotic cuisine. Owner Theo Avgoulis says seafood and salads are just the answer - and with tantalising new sauces, a terrific temptation. In short, light and delicious food. “We feed everyone so well with meats and protein and alcohol over Christmas,” he says. “Our concept is that in the new year, in the summer, it’s time to
bunch of fanastic new sauces to complement and enhance our seafood and salads.” It’s all about summer and freshness. As Theo says, “exciting things”. To complement matters even more temptingly, Le Thai Chef has a new line of export wines in stock to match its summer dishes. “We have a variety of reds, whites and sparkling brut all under the Le Thai Chef label,” says Theo. “They’re all export quality and sourced from southern New South Wales and the Clare and Barossa valleys in South Australia and very competitively priced. “They’re Australian wines and the perfect complement for these summer dishes.”
Dishes like fish, above, and scallops, below are ideal for addressing post-Christmas bulge.
