Our shining light By JOLENE OGLE IT’S a dream so old, Sunshine Butterflies founder Leanne Walsh can’t remember when she first thought of it, but the wish for a therapy-based hobby farm has been her guiding light for many years. Leanne has dreamt of a place where children with disabilities can shine through ability, a place where plants will bloom and children will grow, a place where animals can roam and children can learn. And this year, Leanne’s dream came true. With their current premises up for sale, Leanne decided to shoot for the stars. So, with no government funding and a goal of $100,000, Leanne knew she needed to kick their fund-raiser into overdrive. Together with her dedicated staff and volunteers, and through the help of local venues, businesses and community members, Leanne worked tirelessly to raise over $100,000 for the Sunshine Butterflies’ hobby farm. That’s why Noosa Today has no hesitation in naming Leanne Walsh as its 2014 Person of the Year. Leanne’s hard work and dedication has helped buy the hobby farm that will become a peaceful place for people with disabilities and their family to come and enjoy animal-based therapy along with a range of workshops. “We knew our building was on the market,” Leanne said. “So, we needed to look at getting our own place and the

2014 vision of a farm has been on the scope for so long.” Leanne said the vision for the hobby farm is for a community-focused space where everyone can come together and enjoy the land. Leanne said she has already received interest from a local school who would like to come out one day a week and do a project. “This will be a really good community project,” she said. “It will be really inclusive and everyone I’ve talked to has shown a lot of interest. It’s showing the community is working together.” Most of the land has already been cleared thanks to volunteers, in preparation for the builders to start constructing chicken coops, animal shelters and landscaping will start soon after. Leanne said it felt “surreal” to finally have the hobby farm. “I was at a wedding in Byron Bay, so I couldn’t go to the auction, which I was really disappointed about. But thank goodness, having updates on
the phone was bad enough and going in and out of reception,” she said. “I honestly didn’t think we would get it, so I was really surprised.” When raising funds, Leanne said she received many donations from people she had never met including an anonymous donor who put $1000 wrapped in a newspaper clipping in her letterbox one day. “It goes to show the power of the paper,” she said. “It’s in the paper and people read the story and then they want to jump on board the vision.” Leanne said the organisation’s funds have “dried up” after the purchase, but it’s been worth it when she sees how much the children love the current programs. “They just come out of their shells,” she said. “Kids that have been quite withdrawn are now sparkling. “Programs are about skill building, but it’s more about the social aspect. “If they can build social skills they can then put their hand to anything because they’re feeling more comfortable and more confident within their circle of friends. “They’re more likely to go on and enjoy the project they’re doing. “The kids have been amazing.” Leanne said this has all been possible thanks to her staff and the Sunshine Butterflies board. “It’s so important and we’re lucky to have staff who see the vision,” she said. 1161902-EPJ44-14

Break-out year... and all that jazz By JONATHON HOWARD THE year just gone will be remembered in the hearts and minds of Noosa residents as the one where a small community banded together to break the region’s forced amalgamation and forge new relationships and partnerships. Not only did Noosa etch itself into the history books by de-amalgamating from the Sunshine Coast Council, but Noosa has also revealed a new and more resilient side - one that when residents are called to action they take up the fight with zest and unity. While questions remain about the future boundary changes of Noosa Council, as proposed by the impassioned EDV Residents

Group, there is little doubt that the future is bright for Noosa. Noosa Council has shown in its first year that it’s both resilient and determined to keep Noosa ahead of the pack. The council continues to explore fresh ideas and approaches ranging from a peoples’ jury, to greater community input on a whole range of issues such as the future use of the iconic Cooroy Butter Factory. There have been challenges. The roll-out of Noosa’s infrastructure expenditure, the Noosa River and lakes downgrading and seeking final separation costs from the Sunshine Coast Council, but all continue to be matters of priority. While some residents may not agree with all the Noosa Council’s views and even criticise its actions, these critics are passionate long-term members of the community and many still acknowledge a bright and prosperous future ahead for Noosa. The past 12 months saw a range of major events including many old favourites such as the Noosa Jazz Festival and some new additions such as the Noosaville Night Markets. Hastings Street continues to establish itself as one of Australia’s premium beach-side destinations with several major property sales, including Sheraton Noosa, pushing the Noosa property market back on the map. Noosaville is also coming along in leaps and bounds as not only an exciting place to do business, but a place where the heart of Noosa continues to shine. Noosa Junction has taken a step up this year with a new business association, strong partnerships with Noosa Council and a range of new businesses now opened. There remains hidden challenges in Noosa, including the increased presence of domestic violence and the rising rates of homelessness.
Touch. Wear. Desire.
The Noosa Jazz Festival was heralded a raging success last year and the excitement is already building for this year. These people are often hidden in the shadows and only once they have resorted to radical violence, such as the events that took place in November when a journalist’s car was hijacked, do we realise the scale of the abuse. There have been events in Noosa this year that have made national headlines and left residents deeply saddened, including the recent loss of a Noosa Pengari Stiener School student. Student Gabriel Runge, 16, and teacher Andre Vogel, who tragically lost their lives in a headon road accident while travelling through New Zealand. Residents should also remember the loss of
dearly loved Noosa Heads’ identity Peter Maynard who went missing off a Balinese island in September. The memories of these and other much loved Noosa people will live on in the hearts and minds of their families and friends. And so we enter 2015 with a renewed sense of optimism and excitement. Noosa Today would like to encourage our readers to get in touch and engage with us on local issues and topics that they feel passionate about. Your opinions matters and can help shape the world we live - thank you for your support and Happy New Year.

Above: Noosa residents expressed outrage when the “sandcastle man Arron McCormick was thrown off Noosa Main Beach this year – don’t worry he’s back and happily working again.
Jack and Petra Geitl have captured the hearts of Noosa residents as they save to purchase a mobility vehicle.
Right: The sandcastle man Arron McCormick has been back to what he does best, but the first half of 2014 was not so easy.
Noosa gets behind Jack
Line in the sand By JONATHON HOWARD ON more than a few occasions Noosa has made national headlines for local news events this year, but when local sandcastle man Arron McCormick was banned from Main Beach no one could have expected the public outcry. The story first broke on the pages of Noosa Today and prompted dozens of letters and phone calls from concerned residents wanting to support Mr McCormick. Noosa residents were quick to voice their support for Mr McCormick and his daily sand creations. Mr McCormick, 38, has been expertly crafting his sandcastles for almost 13 years at Noosa’s Main Beach in front of Bistro C. Born in England and making the move to Australia in 1998, Mr McCormick said he
was a little shocked when he was told to cease his sandcastle creations. Mr McCormick was asked by Noosa Council if he would cease the construction of the sandcastles because it was unlawful without a permit. Noosa Council had been cracking down on unlawful beach operators, including several beach vendors offering people massages. A month later Noosa Council made the announcement everyone had been waiting for - they approved Mr McCormick’s busking application. The permit contained conditions which are common to other activities such as beach licences and busking. Mayor Noel Playford said the permit would allow sand sculpting and receiving voluntary donations, but will not allow selling items or otherwise carrying on a business.
NOOSA businesses and residents have shown their big hearts this year with the support and fund-raising to help Petra and Jack Geitl save for a suitable mobility vehicle. The family’s appeal first appeared in the pages of Noosa Today after Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club started fund-raising for the family. Jack has already captured the hearts of many Noosa residents, who have kicked off fund-raising, but behind the scenes the family has been fighting a silent battle to transport Jack to and from his many weekly activities. Jack was born with cerebral palsy and while he attends school daily and lives an active and happy life, his single mother Petra often struggles with Jack’s transport. The call for help has already prompted a response from the Noosa Tewantin RSL, Noosa Surf Lifesavings Club and the Noosa Tewantin Lions Club, as well as recent fund-raising event by Noosa Canal Cruises, who have been extremely generous with
time and fund-raising. “We take a cab each morning to school where Jack has his electric wheelchair and is able to move more freely, she said. “He has a range of activities each week and sometimes we’ve been forced to take the bus, which is okay, it’s just makes things more difficult. The family has looked at a second-hand Toyota Estima, which is a modified Tarago and allows Jack to wheel himself in and out of the vehicle with independence. The vehicle is priced at around $30,000, which is far outside of the family’s budget. “There’s still a long way to go, but we’re determined and hope the community can throw us a lifeline, she said. In the latest development around this story, Petra is expected some early Christmas news which could be in the form of a new car. Check Noosa Today in 2015 to find out more about this story.

Community win THE month of June saw the Peregian Beach community left confused and saddened by the sudden closure of their Surf Life Saving Club. Peregian Surf Club manager Martin Isherwood was given less than 24 hours notice to inform staff not to return to work. However by September and the start of the Surf Life Saving season, in a Queensland-first, Peregian SLSC and Noosa SLSC had amalgamated “seamlessly”. Volunteers from both clubs ensured there were no interruptions to patrols and swimmers were kept under a watchful eye. The amalgamation was proof that while corporate red tape and funding may waiver, the community spirit reaches beyond beach boundaries.
Peregian Beach Surf Club former president Brett Leckie (pictured with Noosa Heads Surf Club president Greg Cowie) said the closure of the Peregian Beach SLSC was a "hard pill to swallow", but was glad to have joined forces with Noosa Heads Surf Club.
Fishing for the answers from long-time fishermen and local commercial fishers began to experience a barrage of daily abuse. Many in the community questioned the sustainability of large-scale fishing and wanted to know whether the Noosa biosphere was being impacted by commercial fishing. Richard Brown of fish wholesalers, Markwell Fisheries, said the focus needs to

be shifted to the lakes and waterways. “The issue isn’t about what’s happening out in the oceans, it’s inshore,” he said. And the Healthy Waterways Report Card agreed, giving Noosa’s waterways and freshwater catchments a lower score than last year, citing a lack of rainfall and vegetation as the reason for fewer fish stocks.
NOOSA was a community in mourning following the horrific death of Noosa Pengari Steiner School teacher Andre Vogel, 36, and 16-year-old student Gabriel Runge in New Zealand. The pair died when the bus they were travelling in collided with a milk truck on North Island State Highway 5, south of Settlers Road at about 4.30pm on Friday 28 November. The deaths prompted an outpouring of support from the local community as well as international support from New Zealand. One student remains in Waikato hospital in a stable condition, while the remain-
ing six students and second teacher, Tricia Jeffree, returned home and attended a special school ceremony the same day.
School principal Allen Kloeden said the students will name a special bridge in honour of Gabriel.
Shooting sends shockwaves A FATAL shooting in Tewantin sent shockwaves through the local community. Police shot dead a 51-yearold man who was reportedly on a violent rampage when police were called to the Outlook Drive property on 23 November. The man was believed to be from Melbourne and was visiting the Tewantin home for a birthday party. The incident gained national attention being one of three fatal police shootings in south-east Queensland within a week. The shootings have led to an immediate review of poli-
cy, procedures and training for violent confrontations, while social media and news outlets
were swamped with polarising views of whether officers should “shoot-to-kill“.

This debate knows no bounds By JONATHON HOWARD IF THERE has been one news story that has sparked the most debate, controversy and outrage across Noosa this year, it would have to be the proposed re-boundary bid to include Eumundi, Doonan, Verrierdale and Weyba Downs into Noosa Council. The EDV Residents Group has been working for years to try and bring these suburbs into Noosa and until this year they had little opposition to the move. It wasn’t until the pro-Sunshine Coast Council group The Sunshine Coast Alliance burst onto the scene that the views of those opposed gained traction with the local media. EDV president Johanne Wright has been a passionate campaigner for the re-boundary bid.
“The issue we are focusing on is whether this change is what the residents want,” she said. Ms Wright said a poll in 2004 showed more than 80 per cent of the residents living in the EDV area supported joining Noosa – a claim that’s refuted by the Sunshine Coast Alliance. Mrs Wright said the group continued to send information out to residents in the lead-up to another poll to gauge opinion. “Some of us passionately want this change and a small number might be against it, but there are so many that aren’t sure,” she said. “This is what democracy is all about.” Meanwhile, the Sunshine Coast Alliance, made up of fourth and fifth

Sunshine Coast Council has indicated it does not support the change, while Noosa Council says it would support the change should locals vote in favour. This is an issue to watch in 2015.

Felt forced out A NOOSA nudist retreat made headlines this year after council received a complaint about an impending swinger’s party at the venue. Noosa Edge Nudist Retreat owner Rainer Muekenberger said he had operated the bed and breakfast establishment for over three years without a single complaint and now faced the possibility of having to pay a $16,000 function licence fee. Mr Muekenberger, who has been a nudist since he was 16, has put his property on the market saying he feels he has been forced out of the area.

Confronted by naked truth By JONATHON HOWARD ONE of the biggest talking points in Noosa this year was the “unofficial nude” status of Alexandria Bay, where several nudists have been visiting since the 1960s. But when a complaint prompted Noosa Police to visit the beach and crack down on naked beach goers the nudists were once again spurred into action. Several eye-witnesses wrote passionate letters to Noosa Today and said they were shocked by the appearance of a police officer who started issuing infringement notices for public nudity at ABay in August. The residents said the police officer chased several nudists down the beach and even booked a nude swimmer
as he exited the water. Noosa Police later said it had acted on a number of complaints and was required to follow through with an investigation and subsequent issuing of infringement notices for going nude in a public place. The police have since restored the balance and have only made routine visits to the beach, but questions remained around whether ABay could become an official nude beach. Noosa Today took residents concerns to Member for Noosa Glen Elmes MP who said in this case it was best to “let sleeping dogs lie”. Mr Elmes warned that stirring the political and social pot around the A-Bay nudity issue, could attract a “less desirable outcome”.
Your FREE Gifts
“If people are going to stage protests and push the matter, it could result in an outcome that’s less desirable,” he said. Mr Elmes said police, the council and the State Government had for years turned a blind eye to A-Bay, but with continued pressure that could all change. “Don’t stir this up - you may get an outcome that’s less desirable than the current situation,” he said. “Don’t put police, council or the state in a position where they may have to address the unofficial nude beach status of A-Bay - it is best, in this case, to let sleeping dogs lie.” While the issue has not flared up since, it remains to be seen whether complaints will continue and the resulting protests.

Social media has taken a shining to Noosa with Instagrammers, bloggers and tweeters all converging on Noosa throughout the year to capture the essence of this region.
Mojo’s back By JOLENE OGLE TOURISM is the single biggest contributor to the local economy, boasting more than 8000 full-time jobs and over 14,000 people employed in the industry. This year, Noosa got its mojo back, with over $40 million worth of investment in new products and redevelopment towards the end of 2013 catching the eye of media and visitors. Since then, there has been a continuing flow of new tours, restaurants and retailers, plus a revitalisation of existing accommodation and take-up of commercial spaces in visitor hubs from Hastings Street to Noosa Marina and beyond. Noosa’s leading tourism body, Tourism Noosa, have been the driving force behind the buzz about Noosa with
new campaigns and marketing tools driving interest in the stunning region. The Tourism Noosa “Welcome to Noosa” initiative won silver at the Queensland Tourism Awards and moved into a new stage, offering awards for outstanding tourism operators, as voted by our visitors. Throughout the year, Tourism Noosa also hosted more than 50 media teams and posted a record media value of over $21 million, boosting the reach of Noosa tourism through print, TV and digital platforms into the international market. Social media engagement has also surged with Noosa hosting some of Australia’s top digital opinion leaders, bloggers, Instagrammers and Tweeters, who collectively have millions of followers in the areas of travel, food
and fashion. The latest independent report into the performance of social media platforms shows Visit Noosa has the highest Facebook engagement rate compared with other destinations including Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Brisbane and Australia. Noosa has also increased in appeal to international visitors, with international spend equating to 85 per cent of the total international spend across the Sunshine Coast. Tourism Noosa has also recorded a record year for memberships, with more than 500 members from the tourism industry now making the most of regular networking nights. The new year is looking to set the bar even higher with a full list of calendar events already planned for Noosa, visitors and the local community.

Sport is really coasting HAPPY New Year to you all. I hope you’ve achieved everything you aimed for in 2014. Coast sport has really shone and it has especially been the year of the woman. So it should be after the staggering seven gold medal haul at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in August. Thirteen locals took on the Commonwealth and came home smiling, ably led by Noosa Olympic gold medallist Brittany Elmslie with two gold and one bronze. Despite now being based in Brisbane, it was only her drive to achieve that forced the move to the big smoke. Mum and dad also joined the journey, which has been a winner so far. Britt went on to score gold at the Pan Pacs on the Gold Coast and has now set her sights firmly on the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Just think how much the Elmslie family owes to her former coach, who suggested she was too fat and needed to move if she had any hope of securing gold. While we’re in the pool, congratulations to Cooroy’s wonder boy Clinton Stanley, who after a marvellous career called it quits.
Benny’s
beat BENNY PIKE
He notched an amazing 75 world records in the distinguished career in Special Olympics and Down Syndrome races. He hasn’t hung up his goggles for good and still powers his way in the Masters Competition with similar gusto. Yes, his loyal Mum Sue is still by his side, and deserved her place as a finalist at this year’s Volunteer of the Year Awards. Jordan Mercer continues to shine in her chosen sport of paddleboard and lifesaving. Jordan displays enormous courage and smiles her way to victory in national and international events. The Nutri-Grain Ironman crown is now the focus of driven Noosa clubbie, who really has climbed a mountain well before her time. It has even suggested that maybe a move to triathlon could be on the agenda. Not a bad move with the Rio and Gold Coast Games on the horizon. Softballers Jocelyn McCallum and Luke Thomas hit home runs in their quest for national
glory, both set for a big 2015. Cyclist Shara Gillow is another chasing Olympic glory, the 2012 Olympian also got to do two events in Glasgow. The Belli Park rider follows her father David, a 1980 Olympian. Noosa Aquatic Centre can also boost the talent of the world under 18 400 metres freestyle champion Remy Fairweather. I have no doubts that under the continued guidance of celebrated Olympic swim coach John Rogers, Remy will conquer the world. Back on dry land, Hastings Street flyer Jordan Csabi is another with the world at his feet. The fastest man for his age over 200 metres, his performance at the Youth Olympics has him earmarked for stardom. Sadly our AFL and rugby league boys suffered on-field, but new players and coaches have already set the direction needed. The Dolphins Rugby Club continues to carry the torch and their junior grand final efforts were outstanding. Good luck for 2015, and don’t forget the Sportstar of the Year awards on 30 January. Until next time.
Win a holiday... snap to it! TOURISM Noosa is offering a Noosa holiday for two as part of its Summer Facebook competition. To enter the competition, visitors simply need to snap their favourite Noosa holiday experience, upload it on the Visit Noosa Facebook page or hashtag #noosasummer on Instagram to go in the draw. The lucky winner will
enjoy three nights’ accommodation in a onebedroom apartment at the newly refurbished Jacaranda Noosa on Hastings Street for two people, plus a Noosa activities experience pack for two people. Tourism Noosa CEO Damien Massingham said the competition was about reliving and sharing visitors’ experiences of Noosa. “Whether it’s a photo of
your favourite destination in Noosa, your most memorable dish at a restaurant or a photo of friends and family enjoying one of the many activities on offer in Noosa,” he said. Full terms and conditions of the competition are on the website at www. visitnoosa.com.au. The competition closes on 31 January so get snapping.

by Karen Seskis Happy New Year!
Hi Karen, I have an investment property in Sunrise Beach and the tenants have given notice to leave at the end of their lease, I am not sure whether to rent or sell, is it easier to sell with a tenant in place or vacant? Tina G, NSW
Sunshine Beach boasts a sparkling beach popular among families and visitors. SOME of Noosa’s most prestigious homes are perched on the hillside of Sunshine Beach, taking in the stunning ocean views and natural surrounds. The village-style shopping precinct is littered with charming boutiques and owner-operated cafes that buzz with the chatter of coffee lovers throughout the day. But, surprisingly, this charming oceanside community that covers two square kilometres of Noosa has experienced a three per cent decline in population, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. When compared to the 2006 census data, the population of Sunshine Beach fell to 2293 people in 2011. Despite the decline, the small suburb has seen no shortage in home sales with 36 sold in the past 12 months and 38 apartments
sold in the same time frame, making an impressive median home sale price of $1.65 million.

marketing either now or later. If you decide selling is the right way to go then now is the ideal time to place the property on the market while it is vacant, and it looks fresh, you would give yourself a three month selling period and if you feel that it is not realising the price you hoped to achieve then you would ask the agent to advertise for a tenant. So allow yourself 4 months without a rental income‌ if that is out of the question the next path to take would be to advertise for a tenant and then after a reasonable time (longer than two months) place the property onto

Survival of the fittest NEW research from a University of the Sunshine Coast PhD student has shown that seniors who exercise in groups are likely to have a reduced risk of falls later in life. Vaughan Nicholson, a 33-yearold physiotherapist of Ferny Hills in Brisbane, conducted a three-part study looking at the impact of group fitness on more than 100 adults aged 55-75. His PhD in Sport and Exercise Science specifically analysed the benefits for seniors who participated in group BodyBalance and BodyPump classes over a 12 to 26 week period as well as an interactive virtual balance game. BodyPump is a supervised gym work out performed to music using free weight equipment, barbells and aerobic steps. BodyBalance is a balance work out comprising yoga, tai chi and pilates that builds flexibility, balance and strength. The project, which is supported by the Australian Fitness Network, found there was an improvement in functional task performance, which could lead to greater stability, spatial and balance awareness. “This improvement in being able to perform basic tasks and balance could potentially help in reducing the future risk of falls in participants,” Mr Nicholson said. “The research also found that BodyPump participants had increased upper and lower body strength and their lumbar spine

and can play a role in helping them to retain and increase their balance over the longer term.” Mr Nicholson’s supervisor Dr Mark McKean said the findings of the USC research would be rolled out on an international level to in-
form the managers and members of more than 14,000 fitness clubs. “Clubs utilising the group exercise programs designed by Les Mills International will use these findings to further improve and support these group exercise pro-
grams,” Dr McKean said. “This is a fantastic result as the characteristics of the average fitness club member are changing dramatically and clubs need to change their offerings to meet varying member needs.”
Stars shine on Noosa NOOSA has a reputation as a playground for the rich and famous and 2014 has certainly shone with star power. Major festivals such as the Noosa International Food and Wine Festival in May, drew the likes of X Factor winner Dami Im, plus a list of celebrity chefs such as Matt Preston, Adriano Zumbo and Matt Golinski. The Noosa Long Weekend in July hosted a swag of entertainment celebrities including Rhonda Burchmore and comedian Fiona O’Loughlin. Musicians Wendy Matthews dropped by to perform at the Sunshine Beach Surf Club in June, and Darryl Braithwaite performed at Noosa Villa in June. It seems comedian Dave Hughes can’t get enough of Noosa with two performances at The J in July and then again in No-

vember. Jimoen also entertained the crowds at The J in January. Noosa was also the holiday place of choice for Channel 9’s The Block contestants with The Block All Star contestants Phil and Amity dropping by in January and then in July, The Block Fans Vs Favs stars Brad and Kyal dropped into Noosa for a conference. This year was also the year Noosa hosted it’s very first major music festival, thanks to East Coast Originals, who run the monthly free community concerts in Peregian and Cooroy. The festival was a huge success attracting more than 4000 event-goers to see the likes of Sticky Fingers, Kingswood and Ash Grunwald perform at the Noosa Tigers AFL grounds in September.
Wendy Matthews was among the list of performers who visited Noosa this year.
Entertainer Rhonda Burchmore performed at the Noosa Long-Weekend festival in July.

Taking one new year at a time Life of
brine PHIL JARRATT
TEN New Year’s resolutions you know I’ll never keep. 1. I will stretch before surfing. In 52 years of riding a surfboard I never have, which is why my back aches in 37 places, my posture resembles a snake being charmed and I can’t turn my head more than 15 degrees without moving the rest of my body. They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, but they also say they shoot horses, don’t they? 2. I will stop using cliches and jargon in my written and spoken output, going forward, if you will. At the end of the day, if push comes to shove, there is no time like the present to put my best foot forward, fight the good fight. May the best team win, but of this we must be certain, no matter which team wins, on the day a cliche will be the winner, and amen to that. 3. I will be more courteous to others in the surf. But there is not a lot of room to move here, since I am already well known for calling others onto set waves, giving way to backpackers, stand up paddlers and kayakers, and spreading good vibes all around whenever I am in the line-up. 4. I will drink less but better. Since I am now on a regimen of four parts soda to one part wine spritzers, this is a lot easier to adhere to than it used to be, but it also probably means that I can afford to look beyond the $2.99 cleanskin aisle at Dan’s and whoop it up now and then. Wealthy friends have told me that a whole new world will emerge if I break into double

This is all very interesting but it is about as likely to happen as me turning left when I board the plane. 5. I won’t worry about money. The sportscaster Mike Gibson once told me his dad was oblivious to the rising price of gasoline since he put ten bob’s worth in the Holden every Saturday morning whether it needed it or not. This is a good attitude. Twenty bucks in the Suzuki every Saturday morning and when she’s empty, we walk. Likewise, I will take a leaf out of the book of ABC’s Alan Kohler who seems
to find the plunging stock market almost as funny as the collapse of the rouble. I will laugh all the way to the ATM. 6. I will use less water. This is primarily because I want to help save the planet, but also because I want to pay those greedy Unity bastards as little as possible. How did they get to own our water anyway? 7. I will stop brazenly self-promoting at every opportunity. Which will apply from 1 January, and since I am writing this long before that date, don’t forget to pick up a copy of Bali Heaven and Hell (great holiday read, just $30 at all good booksellers or on-line), and get your entry into

I will get over my weight loss fixation and consign the calory counter to the same fate as all the other unused apps on my stupid phone. 10. I will work less and relax more. Which is why this column is 600 words instead of the normal 800. And before you start whining, remember how much you paid for this paper.

IMAGINE four of the greatest bands of all time, Little River Band, Steely Dan, Doobie Brothers and Eagles all combined into one band and that’s what you get with Little Steely Brothers. The idea of bringing together the sounds of some of these Classic Rock bands was brought into being by a group of friends whose musical careers have been interlinked for nigh on three decades. A musical friendship like this that develops early and continues over decades is a rare thing. With four strong vocal harmony voices, duelling lead guitars, classic Keyboards, and a solid rhythm section, the band are easily considered one of the best in their genre. They handle the challenging task of reproducing the sounds of these popular bands with class and professionalism. The song writing prowess and outstanding musicianship of the Little River Band, Steely Dan, Doobie Brothers and Eagles has been an inspiration for countless aspiring musicians and producers for many years. The collective legacy of brilliant number-one and top-ten hits over the decades is testament to the important contribution of these bands, whose music has made a huge impact on generations of music lovers. They are each recognised by their own signature sounds... The Little River Band’s soaring vocal harmonies, Steely Dan’s infectious grooves and eclectic melodies, The Doobie’s signature guitar rhythms, and the Eagles’

Easy peasy pies Ingredients: Any leftover meats. Feel free to mix them together such as Christmas ham, turkey or roast chicken. Any leftover root vegetables such as carrots and potatoes, plus peas or corn for a little sweetness. 2 cups leftover gravy or sauce 1 sheet of puff pastry 1 egg, lightly whisked Method: 1. Pre-heat the oven to 180 degrees and lightly grease a baking tray or pie case. 2. Break the meats up into small chunks and mix in with the vegetables in a large bowl. 3. Add the gravy or sauce to the bowl and mix well. Season to taste. 4. Pour the mixture into the greased pan and top with the pastry, pushing down on the edges to secure the pastry to the pan. Poke holes in the pastry to allow it to breathe while baking. Brush with the egg. 5. Cook in the oven for 30 minutes or until the pastry is golden brown. Viola, dinner is now served and there will be a little more room in the fridge. Note: If the mixture is a little runny, add some breadcrumbs to the mixture or a little flour to the gravy to help thicken it up. This recipe can also be used to make individual servings of the pot pie. You can use any ovenproof dish that suits the amount of mixture your leftovers makes.
Ham and Potato Patties
Ingredients: At least 150g leftover Christmas ham At least 800g left over potato mash 1 egg, lightly beaten 2 tbsp plain flour 2 tbsp chopped onions or chives, depending on what’s in the fridge Dollop of wholegrain mustard Oil to shallow fry Method: 1. In a large bowl, mix the mash potato, ham, onions, egg and mustard together. Season with salt and pepper. 2. With wet hands, form the mixture into about 18 patties, about 2cm thick, and lightly dust in flour. 3. Add 2 cm of oil to a frypan and place over medium heat. Cook the patties in batches for about 2 minutes each side or until golden brown and warmed through. 4. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on a plate covered in paper towel. Note: The patties are best served with a rocket and pinenut salad, drizzled with pesto and a splash of lemon juice.
Christmas cake souffles
Ingredients: Butter for greasing 1 tbsp caster sugar, plus extra for dusting 4 egg whites 150ml custard 85g fruitcake or Christmas pudding, finely crumbled Caramel sauce to serve Method: 1. Pre-heat the oven to 180 degrees and put in a baking tray to heat. Grease four 150ml ramekins and then add some sugar to each one. Shake to coat before tipping out any excess sugar. 2. Whisk the egg whites until stiff peaks form, add the sugar and continue whisking until stiff again. 3. In a big bowl, stir together the custard and crumbled cake. Stir in a quarter of the egg white and then very gently fold in the rest using a large metal spoon. Fold until the mixture isn’t too streaky. 4. Divide the mixture between the ramekins. Leave a gap between the mixture and the top of the ramekin. Bake for 12-15 minutes until risen and gold. 5. Warm the caramel sauce and serve the souffles immediately.

Put the leftovers to good use CHRISTMAS is over and the relatives have left but your fridge is still packed with leftovers from Christmas lunch. Don’t throw it out. There are numerous recipes to make the most of any type of leftover. Freeze a batch of meals and use them throughout the holiday period when you feel like relaxing rather than cooking. Firstly, it’s important to ensure all meats are stored correctly and eaten within a reasonable time period to prevent food poisoning. Safe Food Queensland recommend wrapping ham on the bone in a clean tea towel or pillowcase that has been rinsed in water and wrung out tightly. Store-bought ham bags are just as good, but don’t wrap the ham tightly. Remember to change the tea towel daily and store your ham in the refrigerator in a place where the air can circulate around the ham. Don’t store the ham in its original packaging. Ham is expected to keep for two weeks after opening when stored correctly, or for two weeks when frozen, but the ham tastes saltier and less smoky after freezing. Food Safe Queensland said most foods spoil between the temperatures of 5 degrees and 60 degrees, this is known as the temperature danger zone. It is important to limit the time perishable foods spend in the danger zone and to ensure the fridge is kept between 4-5 degrees to stop bacteria multiplying and causing food poisoning.

SPORT
Surf clubs toast a huge year Between the
flags RON LANE
THE year 2014 has slipped past and there is no better time for our local clubs, both supporter and life saving, to assess their achievements during the last 12 months. The movement of our supporter clubs into the world of business, the business plan for the future of these clubs has become a vital part of the administration structure. “It is these plans that not only enable us to raise the funds necessary to perform our duties as lifesavers, but also provide us with the opportunity to become involved in community projects,” said chairman of the Noosa Supporter Club Ian Young. “Our way of saying thanks for the support of the public through the years. “In the good old days when we depended on chook raffles and local dances for our income, the community support was vital.” An assessment of this year’s performance for the Noosa Supporters Club (the Surf Club) shows that it has made some outstanding contributions at various levels of the community. Some of the local projects in which the Noosa Club has been heavily involved are: Smile for a Child Program, became a major sponsor of the Sunshine Coast Sports Federation and the Noosa Gift, major financial contributor to the Hasting St. Christmas Tree, and raised necessary funds for the purchase of a Smart Pup for the Jasmine Green family. Again this year it hosted the Annual Salvation Army Fund Raising Breakfast. Also the surf club has continued with grants that are made available on application, for clubs and organisations within our region. “For the surf lifesaving club,” president Greg Cowie said, “2014 has indeed been very active with major highlights being the amalgamation of the Peregian membership with Noosa, the continued patrolling of Peregian Beach, Lenore Grice’s admittance into the Australian Surf Life Saving Hall of Fame, the outstanding success of the Seahorse Nippers and winning the Australian Surf Life Saving Community Service Award. “Also, the performance of iron woman Jordan Mercer on both the international and local level has also been outstanding.”
The Sunshine Beach Nippers: Part of the under 9 team from left to right Brendan Otto, Daniel Auty, Auguste Korac, Benjamin Bromage, Connor Roberts, Eve Ashmore, Summer Hooper and Izabella Lees. In the youth department, the school programs covering surf lifesaving has incorporated schools from Yandina to Pomona. The purpose of this is to teach surf awareness and in some cases the bronze medallion. It has succeeded beyond all expectations. The amalgamation of the Noosa and Peregian nipper membership has resulted in an incredible 630-plus members on the books. To cater for this number every Sunday, both Noosa Main Beach and Peregian are used, and a program that is now rated the best in the state, has enabled the organisers to make a success of this massive project. So well-structured is the program that Ray Fein, president of the SLSQ Junior Advisory Panel stated: “This is the benchmark for Nipper operations in Queensland.”
The formation of the IRB racing teams has also been a success with crewies from Noosa and Sunshine training together. With the ever increasing call out for roving patrols for both Noosa and Sunshine, experience gained in competition is a vital and necessary part of IRB training. For the Sunshine Beach Surf Club it has also had a season of major achievements. They have bolstered their patrolling membership by 15 per cent, performed a major upgrade of IRB motors, have replaced their old ATVS (All Terrain Vehicles) with modern Yamaha Vikings and have performed a major upgrade of their First Aid Room. Another achievement has been the completion of their club outdoor entertainment area. When it comes to club morale this is something of the upmost importance, for it gives the
patrol members the opportunity to bond together; a most important factor in any rescue organisation. Amongst their many other achievements was the naming of Scott Summers as Sunshine Coast Branch Club Captain of the Year, and the Under 17s Patrol Competition Teams winning the gold medal at the branch, state and national titles. It is the first time in Australian lifesaving that a team such as this has achieved these results. “The nipper club,” said Nipper president David Gleeson, “this season has really been consolidated. For the first time ever 200 plus membership has been achieved, and training for students during school holidays continues to grow. This month, they will continue with the infamous Hell Week for Nippers; a week which will see the members on a training pro-
ZEE WETSUITS
gram covering all aspects of sport from lifesaving through to triathlons. Nonstop, sun-up till dark.” Regarding the Supporter Club, club President Craig Law said: “This year we were the recipent of Clubs Queensland Small Club of the Year Award and the extension and upgrade of the front deck has been a major factor in improving our fund-raising ability. In the community our patrol members have continued to provide water safety for the Noosa Triathlon the Eyeliner swim and other events.” For our two clubs 2014 has indeed been an outstanding year. However their major achievement is without a doubt that no lives have been lost between the flags on Noosa, Sunshine or Peregian Beaches while lifesavers on patrol. “That, is what it’s all about.”

One of my favourite catches this year.
A piscatorial paradise By JACK MANGROVE WHAT a year it has been for Noosa anglers! For visitors and locals alike, the Noosa area is truly a gift from heaven when it comes to fishing. With a spectacular river system, wonderful reefs, rocky headlands and of course those magnificent beaches. We are truly blessed. The fishing over the past year has been a sensation with the river producing some great piscatorial challengers.
In the warmer weather we see great mangrove jack, summer whiting, threadfin salmon and the elusive barramundi. The cooler months bring us big winter bream, tailor and winter whiting, while all year round the flathead, trevally and jewfish keep us busy. Is it any wonder the area attracts so many anglers? Then of course there is offshore; we all know our Noosa Bar can be a challenge some days, but with a cool head, and the right weather forecast it’s not that much of a concern.
Once outside the world is your oyster, with closer reefs like Halls Reef, Jew Sholes and Sunshine Reef are readily accessible to smaller craft. While larger craft have the choice of those reefs and the option for areas like Chardon’s Reef, North Reef and of course the Barwon Banks. With all these areas you have such great options, you can bottom bounce for some very tasty reef dwellers, floating baits for fish that tend to swim mid water or troll lures for those speedy surface feeders. With the change of season we also
see a change in the way we fish, with the winter period the time for chasing those great reef species like snapper, pearl perch, and sweetlip, while the warmer months see us looking for spanish and spotted mackerel, tuna and some great billfish. We also have the wonderful beaches and headlands, with Noosa’s North Shore a short ferry trip away, you can take your four wheel drive on the beach and enjoy a day’s fishing with the family. Maybe you would like to camp for a couple of day in the camping
grounds that are right on the beach. Fishing early morning and late afternoon always bring the best results on the beach, with big tailor, whiting and bream in the winter, and whiting, flathead and dartfish in the summer as well as big jewfish all year round. A beach fish is a great way for a land based angler to get a feed. Whether you are in the boat, on the beach or simply having a quiet fish off the bank, Noosa has it all. On behalf of Jack Mangrove, we hope the New Year bring you good luck on your next fishing adventures!
Fitness feast, with all the trimmings IT has been an incredible journey for participants of the Jetts Noosa 12-week Weight Loss Journey. Each participant started not knowing what to expect and with a clear goal to lose weight. What they have also achieved over the past 12 weeks is a real sense of self belief and as they dropped the kilos they also gained confidence and a determination to succeed. While there were no winners and losers in the Jetts Noosa Journey the final weigh-ins are testiment to the determination and passion from the participants.
Jetts Noosa owner John Morrall said he could not be prouder of his participants and he remains committed to helping each participant maintain their new waist lines. “It’s been an amazing journey,“ he said. “We watched the participants grow and realise the difference they can make in their lives. “I’d like to thank Noosa Today for their support through this partnership as well as several other local businesses who helped make the experience special including...
