Huge tax return theft By PAUL MILLAR A GEELONG tax agent lived the highlife at Crown Casino by drawing funds from trusting clients to feed a massive gambling addiction, the Geelong Magistrates Court heard yesterday. Looking ashen faced, after a night in custody, Kaylene Maree Hussen glanced over a Perspex screen toward family members as the court heard that she could have stolen up to $700,000 from clients, many of them elderly. She has been charged with obtaining property by deception, obtaining financial advantage by deception, theft and

Tax agent alleged to be a gambler make use of false documents. Detective Senior Constable Paul Mitchell told the court that there were potentially almost 150 victims and that the 55-year-old mother of four adult children had allegedly been operating a Ponzistyle scheme. “The amount of charges could go to four or five per victim, so we are looking at potentially up to 400 to 500 charges,” the detective senior constable said.

The investigator said it would take some time to determine how many of Hussen’s clients were also victims. “We will not know a correct figure for a long-time but from 23 victims it’s over $200,000,” he said. Records obtained from Crown Casino showed that since 2002 Hussen and her husband had lost more than $1million at the gambling centre, the court heard.

“In 2014 she spent 104 days at Crown Casino and was there for up to five hours at a time and she had accumulated three million points on her Crown card,” he said. “She has admitted to us that she has an extreme gambling problem … it appeared to be of some relief that this finally over,” the detective added. Evidence would show that money transferred from the accounts of her clients to her own trust account coincided

with her visits to the casino. During the bail application hearing it was revealed that she had made full admissions about the scam but had been protective of her family and cast no blame on her husband, who had been to the casino when she was on her gambling sprees. She was granted bail on the understanding that she not attend gaming venues, not engage in taxation matters, not leave Victoria and that she abide at her son’s home in Torquay. She is on a $10,000 surety and will face court again on April 10.

Climate change waits for a treat

Geelong experienced its own form of climate change this week, living up to its maxim: If you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes - it’ll change. With everything from blazing sun to pouring rain and a bit of wild wind thrown in for good measure, holidays-makers could be excused for puzzling about their next activity. Fortunately the region was able to provide sufficient indoor distractions to keep families amused. These two didn’t let the weather get in the way of a good time, however. Fred Child and Thomas Hall had an ice cream to deal with, and that took all their immediate attention. As far as they were concerned, the next change could wait for five minutes.

A WEARY worker from Lovely Banks put his foot in it while driving along the Princes Highway at Avalon this week. Highway patrol officers did a double-take after a Ford Territory passed them. The relaxed driver had both feet on the dashboard and was in cruise control. The 55-year-old was fined $221 for failing to have full control of his vehicle. His lame excuse: his legs were sore from working all day. THE CARAVAN influx to Geelong and the Surf Coast each summer usually terminates at a beachside resort - not on top of a pub. For the past month, passersby along Belmont’s High Street have been bemused by the caravan on the local pub’s rooftop terrace. Belmont Hotel publican Belinda Shaw installed the van by crane after a brainwave to provide food in similar fashion to the caravan outlets at festivals and fetes and popular across Melbourne in recent times. “It’s not up and running yet,” Ms Shaw told the Independent yesterday. “We’re hoping to do a street food of a Sunday, something like that, along with some music and cheap drinks - create a bit of atmosphere up there. “It’s only a small van, a 10-foot old style job, and

Student plans collapse A $100 MILLION inner-Geelong student housing project that would have generated 1000 jobs during construction has been abandoned as the Federal Government tightens its rental assistance scheme. The Commercial and General/ Teleta project, proposed for a site along Brougham and Cavendish streets, had been rejected as a result of budget spending cuts, Teleta spokesman Ryan McGarigle told the Independent. The project was to comprise more than 500 student units that would have been rented out at a 30 per cent discount to market rates had the government approved National Rental Assistance Scheme help. It was also to include commercial office and ground-floor retailing and car parking but Mr McGarigle said

Accommodation projects sit idle the project had been “nailed in the last budget”. “They discontinued the project,” he said. “It was all relevant to NRAS funding, that’s what made it affordable . They say they don’t want it used for students but students wreck houses in the suburbs and put pressure on low socio-economic residents. “I can understand they’ve got to save money and there are different ways to improve affordable housing stock.” Mr McGarigle said his company’s efforts with the Cavendish project had been an expensive waste of time and money. Two other student housing projects - an $8 million Deakin University renovation of the historic T&G Building in central Geelong, backed with

NRAS funding, and a private $9.75 million project in Bayley Street -- are continuing. They will provide 33 and 117 student units respectively, with virtually no car parking. Another project -- $45 million 10-storey plans for 222 student units in Brougham Place, at the rear of Terminus Lane, scheduled to start building in October 2013, continues to sit idle. And a project at the corner of Malop and Gheringhap sts, initially put up as an $18 million 15-storey to house 329 students, has been reconfigured as a $90 million, 12-storey proposal aimed at drawing government tenants such as the National Disability Insurance Agency or Workcover. It’s hardly the only project aiming for such tenants. The nearby Carlton

Young author demonstrates her woolly heart in print By NOEL MURPHY WRITING a book is a common ambition many adults try but fail to achieve. Not so Amber Rosewarne who has just published her first book at the tender age of 13. The Lara Year 8 student’s book, The Knot in My Woolly Heart, published under the Xlibris imprint, is a charming tale of two youngsters, Lucas and Jenny, who transform their lives from grinding poverty to adventure with the help of a magic ball of wool. “I wrote it during the term two school holidays last year,” Amber told the Independent this week. “I started with just an idea and then away I went. Jenny and Lucas are very poor but they go on all these adventures with this magic ball that was given to them by a lady on the street.” Amber has kept her writing pursuits under wraps and friends and teachers are only now learning of her efforts. They’ve been pretty surprised, she says. The dark-haired teen - celebrating her 13th birthday today - has also put her artistic skills to use on the book’s cover. Here’s a sample of her handiwork: “The cliff looked dead because of

the dead, brown grass covering up all the sands, making the ground soft. A few feet away, beautiful fresh green grass usually grew, but now I saw that it was also dead. “I was lying on the dead grass and hoped and prayed that the dead grass will soon grow into fresh green grass again. I looked at my woolly jumper and pulled off a loose piece of string. “I concentrated on the string and made it float. I moved around the piece of wool towards my woolly jumper and hoped for the piece of wool to be sewn back up in my jumper. The jumper tugged down for the sewing to happen ... ” Amber’s Mum, Stacey, said she was shocked when the publisher phoned to tell her it was keen to produce her daughter’s book. “She said to me ‘Mum, can you read this?’ I said you should get it published,” she said. “Two weeks later, I get this phone call, I was shocked.” While Amber’s excited about her first book being published, she’s not committing to a second just yet. “I’ll wait and see how we go with this one,” she grinned. A DRYSDALE mother of two, badly beaten by two thugs in her backyard and held down as they scrawled text on her forehead, has been spirited away to a safe house. The hooded attackers wrote “cop rat” on her face after entering the back yard of her High Street home on Sunday night. Detective Senior Constable Simon Keogh said the 25-year-old was not

a police informer and it was a “real mystery” as to why she had been targeted by the two men. “There is just no reason for this to happen, she is not a police informer,’’ he said. Police are investigating whether a graffiti attack on the home three weeks ago is linked to her bashing. The 25-year-old was hanging out washing in her backyard around 10pm when two hooded men rushed her, beating her to the ground.

A WESTERN region police officer has been charged following the alleged assault of a man in Geelong in January 2013. The male senior constable was charged on summons with assault and recklessly causing injury. He has been suspended with pay to appear in the Geelong Magistrates’ Court on 24 February.

Man down MARKET Square’s Man to Man store is one of 10 in Victoria and 20 nationally to close after the chain was placed in administration. The closure affects 46 staff Victoria-wide. Administrators Ferrier Hodgson said the 20 underperforming stores would close to enhance profitability and prepare the chain for a successful sale.

Footy trust AN MCG-style trust will be established to manage Simonds Stadium, headed by Geelong Cats fan and former premier, Steve Bracks. The $400,000 trust will oversee the $70 million redevelopment of the ground, to start this year, Premier Daniel Andrews announced.

Big swim UP TO 5000 swimmers are expected to flood into Lorne tomorrow for the 35th annual pier to pub. The swim, which attracts contestants of all ages, is the largest open water swim in the world and is organised and run by volunteers from Lorne Surf Life Saving Club.

Hot cars THE City of Greater Geelong and Kidsafe Victoria have launched an awareness campaign to help prevent children across the region from being left unattended in cars on hot days. The Geelong region campaign has been launched as thousands of families flock to the area and will feature high visibility warning signs at childcare centres, car parks and supermarkets.

Mussel power ORGANISERS expect to sell up to ten tonnes of local mussels at the annual Portarlington Mussel Festival tomorrow. Up to 100 food and drink stalls will be in operation during the day with music being played at five separate locations around the town. Up to 25,000 visitors are expected to attend the festival.

The woman managed to text her brother Nathan Sobko, saying: “I need help”. He arrived at the rear yard and saw sister Julie in a distressed state and immediately contacted emergency services. as she choked back tears. “I think I am now looking at everybody in the street, wondering, is it you?” She said her daughter was now in a safe place. “She has a massive black eye and it hurts me to see it,” she said. Hotel site is also host to a nine-storey $120 million proposal; likewise Myers St where a $40 million, 11-storey plan has been approved for the Kings Funerals site. Mr McGarigle was cynical about Geelong’s construction prospects, saying he’d been involved in “early days discussions” about possible NDIA and Workcover projects. “There’s only a small number of developers in Geelong capable of producing these and it all comes down to funding,” he said. “The government doesn’t want to spend, which is slowing things down. They’ll try to locate in existing buildings instead. “Geelong did quite poorly out of the federal budget. It’s like they want us to hit rock bottom and then come in.”

Anglesea roundabout roulette By NOEL MURPHY CHRONIC traffic congestion at Anglesea’s Great Ocean Road roundabout is again frustrating motorists, business, visitors ... and politicians. The perennial bottleneck, ignored by authorities for years, sees a peak of some 16,000 cars negotiate the roundabout at snail’s pace a day. The latest summer gridlock this week had Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson up in arms after lobbying VicRoads to make the intersection a priority project since she was elected. But there could be light on the horizon -- if State funding can be attracted. “I have had some positive discussions with Vic

Summer jams frustrate everyone Roads. I understand it is planning a community consultation and that preliminary work on an upgrade has been completed,“ she said. VicRoads South Western region director William Tieppo said he was aware of the congestion, and the stakeholder interest in, the Camp Road and Great Ocean Road roundabout. “VicRoads has developed a draft concept plan for roundabout improvements and will be planning to engage the community by mid-2015 on these plans,“ Mr Tieppo said. “While there is currently no funding for this proj-

ect, VicRoads has submitted a funding proposal for consideration in the 2015/2016 financial year. “VicRoads welcomes discussions around the need for an upgrade of this important piece of road infrastructure.“ Ms Henderson described congestion in and around the Anglesea township over summer as “terrible“. “At times, the traffic bank-up in and out of the town can stretch up to eight kilometres. This simply cannot continue,“ she said. Ms Henderson demanded the State Government

Regalia devotees sought for dwindling Buffaloes THE Geelong arm of a fancifully named organisation, known more for its links to Fred Flintstone than its behind the scenes charity work, is on a recruiting drive for more members. The Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes, which once had hundreds of followers across the region, is now battling to draw 20 members and has pulled together three lodges to cut costs. Les Williams, the treasurer of the newly formed Bell Post Hill combine, said the local organisation had come to the realisation that it had to attract younger members to ensure its longevity. “We have to get some new members, the order is only going to last another 10 years unless we get new members,” he said. The order has been operating in the region for about 80 years and draws its roots from the mother body in England. “People see us as a poor man’s freemasonry, we do have our own regalia and there is some pomp and ceremony at the start of the evening but then we

have a relaxed social atmosphere,’’ Mr Williams said. Commonly known as the Buffs, the order was initially formed by a group of actors and stage hands in an English tavern in 1822. The Buffalo name was taken from a popular song of the time and the group did not take itself too seriously. The Geelong order has been heavily involved in fund-raising for the dialysis unit at the Geelong Hospital. Mr Williams, who will be installed as the Grand Primo of the Victorian Buffs at the end of this month, said there was a real social atmosphere at meetings after official business, there was no religious affiliation. He said members supported the Australian constitution and still toasted the Queen. Becoming the Grand Primo might sound grand but the head of the state’s Buffs knows he has plenty of grass to cover to make a difference. “If there are any problems, my buff gets kicked,’’ he said. investigate an alternate route through or around Anglesea. “This would not only alleviate traffic congestion but mitigate the risks of being trapped by bushfire,” she said. “Up to 16,000 vehicles can pass through Anglesea daily in the peak holiday season. This congestion is impacting on residents, local businesses and holiday makers.” Ms Henderson has a petition calling on the Government and Roads and Road Safety Minister Luke Donnellan to take urgent action to fix the problem roundabout. He then made a flying visit back home and leaves for Adelaide today to compete in five races in eight days in the National Etchells Championship on board Triad, skippered by sailing legend John Bertrand. “I guess I’ll need a couple of days off after that,” Newman said. Mine faces EPA claim POTENTIAL buyers of Alcoa’s Anglesea power plant should be aware its “appalling level of emissions” were recognised at the “highest level” of EPA Victoria, according to Surf Coast Air Action. But the claim in SCAA's campaign against the coal-fired power station, which faces closure - and the loss of more than 80 jobs - appears at odds with official assessments by the EPA. SCAA said after recently meeting EPA boss Nial Finegan that “the EPA’s role is to be an effective environmental regulator and an influential authority on environmental impacts”. ”Potential buyers should note that Mr Finegan’s visit demonstrates that at the highest level EPA Victoria is aware of the Anglesea community’s very serious concerns about the appalling levels of emissions released by Alcoa.” Alcoa, however, refused to acknowledge any “appalling level of emissions”, stressing it would “continue to meet with a range of stakeholders, including community members, to discuss their concerns”. The company said it welcomed a State Government public inquiry and “any potential recommendations of policies and procedures that will contribute to environmental protection”. The EPA said it would “continue to work with Alcoa to support compliance with its EPA licence.”

“With any sale, if the Anglesea power station were to change owners, the licence would need to be transferred or a new licence application would need to be made. “When the transfer or a new application happens, EPA will review the licence and its conditions. Potential buyers should seek to understand regulatory requirements through the sale process.” Alcoa told the Independent last month that its Anglesea Human Health Risk Assessment (HHRA), published in August 2013, modelled ground level concentrations for arsenic, lead and mercury are orders of magnitude lower than the State Environmental Protection Policy (Air Quality Management) (SEPP (AQM)) design criteria. Arsenic was less than 1.5 per cent, lead less than 0.7 per cent and mercury less than 0.3 per cent of the SEPP AQM design criteria, demonstrating negligible risk to human health, it said after SCAA posted images of a pregnant woman clutching her stomach, superimposed with the words mercury arsenic, lead and dioxin. The EPA said Alcoa’s most recent air-monitoring results showed emissions from the power station “comply with national standards and EPA licence limits”. “Alcoa publishes these results in its monthly environment report to the community,” it said. The SCAA has previously been accused of making misleading claims by the Australian Workers Union and AGL Energy.

Water cops crackdown on coastal boaters By PAUL MILLAR WATER POLICE have warned that there will be no let up on the crackdown on offenders doing the wrong thing on coastal waters over the summer season. Police served 47 infringement notices on boaters along the coast from Geelong to Queenscliff, including the Barwon River during December. More than 30 of the notices were for safety equipment breaches, while the others mainly related to licencing and registration offences. Acting Senior Sergeant Andrew Lilly said police would continue to send teams to known hot-spots along the coast. “We will be out in force until the end of Easter and we will certainly be targeting anti-

social behaviour on the water,” he said. With huge crowds hitting the water during the recent hot spell, the acting senior sergeant also urged recreational boaters to ensure that their safety equipment was up to standard. Sgt Lilly said there was an increase in popularity in inflatable personal flotation devices. “But you have to be on top of servicing with these devices,” he said. His warning coincides with Maritime Safety Victoria’s reminder to owners of boats about the importance of fire safety. MSV spokesperson Paul Corkill said boat fires could be prevented if simple precautions were taken before and during the outing on the water. “Boaters should keep in mind that most

vessel fires are caused by poorly maintained mechanical equipment, which leads to petrol fumes leaking into confined spaces within the boat,” Mr Corkill said. “Poorly maintained electrical systems then spark and ignite built up fuel vapour usually just after refuelling. “When refuelling, electrical systems must be isolated, engine bays must be adequately ventilated and any spillage must be cleaned up immediately. “Fire extinguishers must be kept in good order and in a conspicuous, easily accessible location on-board. “When refuelling and then restarting, the only person allowed on the boat is the operator - this is to minimise injuries if things go wrong.”

READING mobile phones or iPads before going to sleep could be damaging your health much more than just keeping you up late at night. Geelong neuroscientist Sarah Loughran says the devices’ blue light could be damaging the body’s circadian rhythms and melatonin levels, posing more serious possibilities. Dr Loughran, a researcher with the University of Wollongong’s Australian Centre for Electromagnetic Bioeffects Research, told the Independent sleep deprivation could be linked to all manner of problems. Her comments follow recent overseas findings linking latenight mobile use and sleep deficiency to diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease. Scientists at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, US, suggested chronic melatonin suppression was linked to increased risk of certain cancers. Studies Dr Loughran is undertaking at the Australian Centre for Electromagnetic Bioeffects Research, which is a recently formed NH&MRC Centre of Research Excellence, are looking into the effects of mobile phones on sleep patterns. “In general, it can hamper your sleep just by leaving less available time for sleep because you’re playing games, etc,” she said. “Exciting or provocative sites or games are boosting adrenalin

Then the blue light from these devices can interrupt circadian rhythms and levels of melatonin, an important hormone for regulating the sleep-wake cycle. “Pyschological health and well-being can be affected, anything that’s causing sleep deprivation will impact on health, on learning ability, work performance and psychological mood.” “Effects on brain activity are there and have been shown several times – both my own work and by others – and I am currently looking at potential mechanisms behind these effects, as well as if similar effects exist in children. “It has been suggested that children may be more sensitive to the electromagnetic fields emitted by devices like mobile phones,

and I am about to conduct the world’s first sleep study investigating this possibility in children and adolescents.” Dr Loughran has previously raised concerns that the friendly buzz of mobile phones in Aussie blokes’ pockets might be damaging their sperm. She said too many questions had been raised about the effect of mobiles on sperm shape and movement for the matter to be ignored. Likewise on changes recorded in brain activity. “The brain shows small changes to fast bursts of activity known as spindles that you don’t have when you’re awake,’’ Dr Loughran said of research in which participants had phones placed over the right temple. The questions are just what this activity might mean, whether it affects sleep or other biological functions and whether more farreaching effects might be linked to mobile phones. Dr Loughran said widespread concerns had been raised about cancer links to phones but reproductive functions were also a concern because of their sensitivity to heat and the heat generated by mobile phones. Phones might affect sperm mobility, the ability of sperm cells to move forward, she said. They might also affect sperm morphology, the shape of sperm cells. “Everything that radiates has the possibility of heating,’’ Dr Loughran said.

Our coastal surf girls are cresting the waves The Surf Coast has long lured and nurtured champions, and the current complement of wave carvers is no exception. NOEL MURPHY catches up with a few of our best female riders. FUNNY how you never know just who you’ll run into out in the surf. Trip over Georgia Kelly and you’d be forgiven for thinking here’s one more surf-addicted girl living the dream. But as with so many other surfers, there’s often a whole other story altogether – rock star, business pro, doctor ... In this case, you’d be tripping over an RMIT criminology/ psychology undergraduate; one who hopes to move on to further studies in forensic science, maybe something in corrections support. The bright young things out in the water along the Surf Coast know their surfing too, and don’t mind sharing their know-how. Georgia’s been teaching the game to newcomers for the past

three years, with Torquay Surf Academy’s Gally Galbraith. “I started myself when I was about 10, Dad taught me,” she says. “I’ve never done it competitively but it’s handy for making money while at uni. “I love seeing the satisfaction on their faces when they get up for the first time, even if it’s just for a second or two – it’s really rewarding.” That reward is all but guaranteed, too, which is a bonus. Students almost invariably get on their feet first lesson. Sometimes they return for a few more to get their skills up quicker. “People come from everywhere – from Melbourne, locals and tourists from all over the

world,” says Georgia. “Most excited of them are probably tourists from Europe, they’re just excited to be in the water. “We do a run-through of the stages on the sand and then we get them in knee-deep water just to start off. “Then we do belly rides to get them comfortable and go through the process we did on the beach to get them on to their knees and standing up. The water is waistdeep when we get them standing.” All good stuff, sharing the love. But what is it about surfing, the thrill of catching a wave, that keeps newcomers and veterans returning to the water? “I guess it’s the adrenalin rush, like any sport,” says Georgia.

ZOE CLARKE has grown up in the surf off Jan Juc but has been developing a liking for more exotic surf locations such as Hawaii lately. It’s hardly unexpected. The girl’s a gun: 2012 Victorian Open Champion; 2013 Victorian under 18 State Champion; highest placed female Victorian on the 2014 ASP Pro Junior Tour. And a World Tour wildcard spot under her belt after taking out the Rip Curl Pro Women’s Trials this year. Not bad going for a 17-year-old only now emerging from Year 11 and weighing her subject options for year 12 next year. “I’m looking at psychol-

Zoe Clarke.

SHE MIGHT be a double Australian surfing champ but Jan Juc mum Emma Webb is extraordinarily down to earth. She’s also remarkably humble about her achievements, which as both Australian women’s longboard champion and Australian stand-up paddleboard champion, are considerable to say the least. But Webb’s matter of fact about it all. She has two young kids and a family household to manage. There’s other stuff going on. So much, in fact, she’s been known to run off straight after a contest without being awarded her trophy. Webb, in her mid-30s, is a relative newcomer to surfing. She took it up 15 years ago under the tender guidance of teacher husband Sam.

Living at Jan Juc, she smartly found herself surrounded by the area’s multitude of talented surfers flying under the radar. “I reckon down here they’re not quite underground but it’s definitely understated how good they are,” Webb said. “Up north, it’s all in the papers. In Victoria, all water sports are really low-key. It’s probably because of the weather – there are heaps of really talented surfers but they’re just not where the media and sponsors are.” Webb says the high standard of local surfers, and the number of male surfers in the water, has helped her work her way up the chain. “Surfing down here, you surf with lot of guys,” she says.

ent every single day – you never know what it’s going to be like when you go out.” Clarke likes surfing waves like those on offer at Haleiwa these days. Like all champs, she’s indifferent to their size. The bigger, the better, basically – more things to do with them. As a powerful role model, how does she suggest young girls approach the sport of surfing? “I tell them do it for the right reasons,” she says. “A lot of people, especially girls, do it because they want to look a certain way instead of doing it to enjoy and get the most out of it.”

EXPRESSION OF INTEREST CAFÉ OPERATION AT THE NEW GEELONG LIBRARY HERITAGE CENTRE The City is seeking interested parties to operate a café at the new Geelong Library Heritage Centre being constructed in Little Malop Street, Geelong. A café in the new Geelong Library Heritage Centre will attract the patronage of the users of this new state of the art facility and is well located to attract patronage from the Geelong Cultural Precinct in which it sits. The Geelong Library Heritage Centre is located in a part of Central Geelong with very strong strategic connections. It is positioned within a five minute walk of well over 10,000 students and workers. The City seeks expressions of interest from suitable applicants to operate the café at the Geelong Library Heritage Centre with construction scheduled for completion in the second half of 2015. The Expression of Interest document has been prepared to assist prospective operators to determine whether they should apply. Copies of the document are available at www.geelongaustralia.com.au or call 5272 4303 for further information.

ogy, history, English, not sure what else yet, I’ve done Year 12 maths already,” she says. After that, she might look at journalism at tertiary level and, who knows, maybe work on a surfing mag later. It’s funny the way things can pan out for a kid who fell in love with surfing at the age of four. Clarke has cut her teeth among the surf-mad locals and shaved the surf ever since. “My dad took me out first but I was out by myself from an early age,” she says. “It’s different to other sports where you need other people. It’s very individual and you can surf whenever you want. I think the best thing is that it’s differ-

“For women or girls surfing regularly with guys better than you, you tend to rise to their level. When you’re around those people, it’s not so much thinking you’re good but more a case of if you don’t have limitations you just go in as hard as you can.” Webb is also a fervent believer in the benefits of sport to kids. “I think sport is awesome for kids. It gives them confidence, you don’t have to win,” she says. “I started out swimming at eight. With sport, you know you have ability, it gives a lot of kids confidence in themselves – it can be anything, tennis, golf. Later in life I think they’re not so likely to get into drugs and drinking so much because they might be training or have a game the next day.”

Heat’s on our upset wildlife By NOEL MURPHY SPARE a thought for wildlife as temperatures soar over summer because they often do it harder than humans, according to Helen Burrell. Wallabies, kangaroos, possums, echidnas, lizards and many more creatures can become distressed, the Leopold Wildlife Shelter carer said this week. With tourists boosting the local population, trekking along walking paths and tracks, more animals have been coming to the shelter’s attention. But Ms Burrell believes they’re just the tip of the iceberg. “Any possum you might see on the ground in daylight hours, for instance, is a possum in trouble, she said. “It’s the same with birds. You should contain them with a washing basket or a box over it and call for help. “We’ve been advising people to put water out for native wildlife in shallow dishes in shaded garden areas. Ms Burrell said lizards and snakes were especially active across the region, including in heavily-populated suburban areas. “Lots of lizards have been popping up out of their winter hibernation in gardens all over Geelong. It’s normal, they should be there but may find it hard to find water, she said. “We had an awful lot of snake reports, 130 snakes this season.

STRESSFUL: Head keeper Carissa Guthrie with Augus the swamp wallaby. They’ve been everywhere, all over Geelong. “We had one just off Pako where people had been fourwheel driving and were unpacking when a nice brown snake dropped onto the driveway from under their vehicle and put the fear of God into them. “At Leopold on Christmas Day, a local man found a king brown in his driveway. Ms Burrell said distressed echidnas were relatively common, likewise turtles which often appeared after wet days – “about three or four a week, she said. “We got 30 microbats – tiny little things like mice with wings that were found in a wall cavity in Curlewis by some young blokes who were going to do some renovating.

“No-one should ever touch any kind of bat but we’ve been vaccinated, all our team. Ms Burrell said three seals were being monitored at local beaches but declined to say where to prevent curious visitors disturbing them and possibly endangering themselves. “We don’t want people approaching them, she said. “They can outrun a man in a straight line. If you get between them and the water you could be in trouble, they’ll take off after you. Anyone who finds wildlife in trouble should phone/text the Leopold Wildlife Shelter on 0409 002258. Leave a message if they don’t answer, they’re often busy caring for animals.

Connecting people and communities BIRTH DAYS: Sam and Emma Thorley with Averleigh, Nyah and Cooper.

Friday, 9 January, 2015 Page 13

COLORBOND FENCING Call in and see our large fencing display

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN IT WAS exciting at first, but then reality set in as Emma and Sam Thorley welcomed twins into the world. Not that they would have it any other way. And Emma’s mother-to-be intuition told her that twins were on the cards. “We weren’t scared or upset – that came a bit later,” Emma confessed. “Adding one doesn’t seem so bad, but I refused to prepare for two until I was sure that they would be okay.” It’s part of the extra pressure and stress that multiple births bring to families that can often be underestimated and sometimes even unrecognised.

As a member of the voluntary committee running the Geelong branch of the Australian Multiple Births Association, Emma has come to understand the stories of parents facing a different challenge to most. “There was one story where the parents tried so hard to do everything themselves, but didn’t realise the extra pressure they put on themselves, which was picked up by their new twins. “They had a stressed out mum, a dad who couldn’t work out what was going on and crying babies. “We learned pretty early on to be open to help. You actually need help. We were happy to do second hand instead of insisting on all new stuff.” Emma and Sam now have sixyear-old twins Cooper and Aver-

leigh as well as 18 month Nyah, but it took a little time to pluck up the nerve to add to the tribe. “The risk of another set of twins or even triplets played on our minds the second time round,” Sam admitted. Twins ran in the family on Emma’s side and Sam himself is an identical twin. “You have to make constant allowance for twins. Nothing is a quick trip, even just a bread and milk run to the supermarket,” Emma said. GAMBA, which also has members with triplets, offers help, advice and tips to parents with multiple births as well as a playgroup for a little time-out. Visit gamba.amba.org.au for more information.

A SQUADRON of World War I fighters will attack Avalon’s airshow next month. The New Zealand-based warbird collection – including five German aircraft and five allied fighters and bombers – will cross the ditch for Australia’s first major observance of the Gallipoli centenary. The aircraft are perfect fullsized replicas and include many marquee names of pioneer military aviation. Among their number is a French Nieuport 11, one of the most successful fighter aircraft of World War 1. The Nieuport was the first allied aircraft to mount a serious challenge to German air superiority in the early days of the conflict. The New Zealand group also includes four British aircraft, a

Sopwith Camel, a SE5a, an RE8 Bomber and a Bristol F2 all of which were flown by the fledgling Australian Flying Corps. The AFC recorded 170 enemy “kills” during its two years of operation (1916 - 1918) with the Sopwith Camel being the most successful aircraft. The five German fighters include a Pfalz and four Fokkers among them the legendry DR1 tri-plane as flown by the famous Red Barron. The 10 Kiwi NZ aircraft will join a host of other WW1 fighters from around Australia for a series of simulated air attack manoeuvres and dog fights over Avalon. Their appearance will be in keeping of the show’s main theme “saluting the heroes of the sky – a century of military aviation” “Our event will be the first major observance of Gallipoli in Anzac’s centenary year,” airshow

CEO Ian Honnery said. “Fittingly, the New Zealanders will join us as we mark this important occasion.” A number of WWI fighters from the TAVAS (The Australian Vintage Aviation Society) collection will also be appearing at Airshow 2015. The Avalon-based event will also feature a number of vintage World War Two aircraft, pioneer jets from the Korean War and the latest in military heavy metal from home and around the world. The largest contingent of RAAF aircraft to ever come to Avalon will take part in a series of flying displays and ground exhibits at the event. The Australian International Airshow will be staged at Avalon Airport Victoria with public sessions on Friday 27 February to Sunday 1 March.

Letters Political will AS AVALON Airport continues to unravel and revert to a cluster of tin sheds and a tarmac, why has political support for what could be a regional gamechanger been so underwhelming and disparate? Should the jungle drums be on the money then the ‘use it or lose it’ mantra is closer to the latter. The regional benefits of a fully-fledged facility remain by and large unquantifiable, yet fresh food, dairy and other produce exports to Asian markets top $1 billion annually. A recent joint venture between HRL Developments, Mercer Stokes and Fresh Food adding a further $320m and 1000 jobs combined with return tourism would stand local unemployment gloom on its head. A caveat on varying the airport lease adds to what is proving to be a glacial Avalon Airport international re-classification. There is not a pre- or post-election squeak of support from the Andrews government with the fate of the $50m rail spur remaining anyone’s guess. As a snapshot of what can be achieved through vision, teamwork, commitment and responsible governance, New Zealand exports to China for eight months last year totalled $7.9 billion with 60 per cent from dairy and forest products. Where there’s a will, there's a way. Richard Worland Manifold Heights

Democracy dudded NO FREE New Years’ Eve Festival for Geelong this year; that’s a bit much, we always get a free night out. Must be the fault of the Mayor spending money on a Christmas tree we all loved to look at; or the fault of the people who avoid paying taxes; maybe, it is even the fault of Tony Abbott and Joe Hockey up there in Canberra, the spoilsports. Does it ever occur to us that we just might be going the way of Greece and spending ourselves into bankruptcy? Of course not – we are entitled to everything. Our freedoms have been violated. The State Government has not only cut short a five year scientific experiment allowing 60 head of cattle to graze in the highlands but is also setting this rule in concrete to make it impossible for another government to even consider continuing the experiment. Labour’s legislation to ensure state elections are held at the same time every four years had a clause to ensure that, should a government be acting against

Black ban readers (a bit) divided ALL I CAN say to Ray Black is: Get a grip man. If this is the best he can do, by using bully boy tactics to try and silence his opponents, then it only highlights the deficiency of his arguments. I’m disgusted with what he wrote. That’s all I have to say. Alan Barron Grovedale I HAVE to agree with Dr Ray Black in regards to Alan Barron. Once again this is not an issue of free speech. Alan has had his say and demonstrated on ample occasions that to him the science just doesn't matter and belies his inability – or refusal – to understand the basics. It not only reflects badly on him but also the Independent, as it shouldn't be left to the frusthe best interest of the citizens the four year term could be cut short. This new law has no such clause or safety measure. What other laws is the Andrews government going to enact in this manner? One thing is for sure; it will not be in the best interests of democracy and further erode the freedoms we now enjoy. Elizabeth Cross St Albans Park

Safe haven ON BOXING Day, a Sri Lankan family, in Australia seeking asylum, joined my family for lunch. The father, a young Tamil, said he would be killed if he returned to Sri Lanka. I challenge anyone to look an asylum seeker in the eye when they say those words and not feel the fear that this may be true and come to pass. Some say that asylum seekers arriving by boat are not the most deserving of permanent residency in Australia. But that aside, our obligation to those asylum seekers who have arrived, and to those we intercept at sea, is clear. We must take all possible actions to ensure they are not exposed to any further risk of torture or death. Recent immigration legislation further removes protections for asylum seekers in our care, increasing the risk of them being returned to face torture or even death.

trated public to correct his flawed unqualified opinions. For climate scientists the discussion about its validity ended over 15 years ago, period. It's simply not good enough and poor journalism to allow Alan's campaign to continue. Gary Shepherd Belmont The government’s policies (and Labour's policies before that) have prevented drownings, but putting asylum seekers at risk of torture or death is completely unacceptable. Scott Morrison, Tony Abbott and the entire Federal Cabinet have got a lot to answer for, with their inhumane asylum seeker policies. John Morton South Geelong

Contested ban DR RAY Black, who believes that climate science is settled and so wants Alan Barron banned for contesting this, clearly doesn't understand that nothing in science is ever settled and that scientific progress is greatest when it is contested. A logical and inescapable consequence of the global warming theory that increasing CO2 is warming our planet is that any increase in CO2 must result in our planet warming. It is now a quarter of a century since the United Nation's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) made this prediction. However there has been no global warming since 1997, despite a 10 per cent rise in CO2, a fact acknowledged by no less than IPCC chair Dr Rajendra Pachauri in Melbourne on 21 February, 2013, and no less than the British Met Office. And the global warming theory cannot explain how this could happen. This theory was always a stretch. Of every

85,800 molecules of our Earth's atmosphere only 33 are CO2 and of this only one is man-made. In considering the contribution of greenhouse gases, Alan Barron was correct that CO2 is minor compared to water vapour. Accordingly, by our standard long-established scientific method, we should throw away this nowdiscredited global warming theory and look for another explanation for the late 20th century global temperature rise. So much for settled climate science. The jury, as they say, is still out. So instead of banning sceptics, we should welcome them. Lindsay Brown Grovedale

Uninformed ban ONE REASON the Independent is my favourite local paper is its letters page. The contributors may not be experts, but the best of them relay information from sources the reader might overlook. Alan Barron, on climate change, is always informative. He gives us the facts as he sees them, and quotes his sources, as any commentator on science must do. He doesn't waste time denigrating other letter writers; he plays the ball, not the man. But Dr Ray Black wants Alan banned for producing “ideologically-driven misinformation” about “settled science”. He says Alan is ignorant of “greenhouse effect physics” but doesn't specify what sin Alan has committed in this rather complex area of science. In fact it's the complexity of climate causation that defeats those who think the science is “settled”. Even the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change acknowledges, for example, the continuing debate over climate sensitivity to carbon dioxide and the differing results between analyses based on observations versus computer models. So Curry and Lewis's peer-reviewed paper published recently in Climate Dynamics, using observations rather than models, and showing much less sensitivity to CO2 than the IPCC had predicted, didn't surprise some of us. No doubt the science will be a bit more “settled” in coming decades, but only if there is a free flow of reliable information between interested parties. Dr Black admires the Los Angeles Times for not publishing letters that offend the reigning dogma. This demonstrates how a purely scientific debate is corrupted by an ideology that favours censorship over knowledge. Tim Saclier Leopold

ROCK & ROLL FESTIVAL 2015

Television, Events, Activities, Theatre

Country swing for fest TEXAS swing has a way of getting under your skin, under your guard, if you’re not a country music fan. If you are a fan, well, you might think of it as a lifelong formative influence. It certainly was with country star Doug Bruce, who was brought up touring the US and overseas with his dad, Dale Bruce, who played with, among others, western swing legend Red Steagall. It brought the 44-year-old to Australia in the late 1970s, creating a solid impression, one not forgotten by the kangaroo hides and boomerangs and other Aussie souvenirs he returned home with. Smitten early in life by the performance bug – he was on stage as an eight-year-old doing his best Boxcar Willie train whistle at Fort Worth’s mighty Coliseum venue – Bruce learned his way around all manner of musical instruments, drums, guitar, bass, piano. With other relatives also playing and writing songs, and rubbing shoulders with the likes of George Jones, Minnie Pearl and Red Sovine, music was a natural career choice for the young Bruce. By the mid-1980s, he was working as a drummer and backing singer with various bands, doing session work and opening for acts such as Travis Tritt, Jerry Jeff Walker and Rascal Flatts. His band Cheyenne won various awards, he picked up a couple of drum-

mer of the year nominations, moved to Nashville playing with Brit Stokes and fell victim to the writing bug. He played the Grand Ole Opry, the Midnight Jamboree at the Texas Troubadour Theatre and opened for George Jones in Joplin before falling for an Australian girl, Jodie, he met in Nashville, crossing the Pacific to now live in Bendigo. Doug Bruce and The Tailgaters will be part of the serious country groove at this year’s Motor City Music Festival over the Labor Day weekend, 6 to 8 March, at the Geelong Showgrounds. He says country music’s appeal is universal across the US but still growing in Australia, where it seems to suffer a kind of stigma. Even so, it regularly surprises newcomers, young people especially. “I don’t know how many times we’ve done shows where kids from say 13 to 18 are standing there with their arms folded but who end up laughing and smiling,” he says. “They say ‘I hate country music but I like your music’. “Thing is, so long as we’re having a good time on stage that’s all that matters – the audience picks up on that and enjoys it too.” With a catalogue of industry awards to his name, Bruce is one of Australia’s foremost country artists. He’s played all the major country music festivals and events in Oz, including Tamworth.

Audiences liking outdoor plays THE BARD’S story of love, deception and rivalry comes to Geelong Botanic Gardens in a new production of As You Like It. Australian outdoor Shakespeare company, OZACT has previously brought productions of Romeo And Juliet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Hamlet to the Gardens. The tranquil setting provides a perfect stage for Shakespeare’s work with its “mature formal gardens, majestic trees and colourful floral borders,” according to OZACT director Bruce Widdop. “Bring a rug, cushion and someone you love and escape to the magical Forest of Arden,” Widdop advises. The production is on 17 and 18 January at 4 pm. To book, visit ozact.com or call 0419 330 516.

Strictly having a dancing ball GEELONG’S Sophia Katos returns to her home state as the alltime classic Australian film and stage show, Strictly Ballroom, opens in Melbourne. Katos starred in the premiere season in Sydney playing the role of Liz Holt and featured on the cover of the autumn edition of Geelong Coast Magazine. Directed and co-written by Baz Luhrmann, the production includes an exceptional cast of 43 actors, singers and dancers. Katos told GC Magazine that she was itching to commence rehearsals and to explore her character. “I can’t wait to hear all the songs and read the full script,” Katos said. Strictly Ballroom tells an inspirational story of a championship ballroom dancer who breaks all rules to follow his heart. It has prompted audiences to dance in aisles to the “kaleidoscopic colour and fun.” Katos dedicated her performance to her parents for buying her Strictly Ballroom as a child and for letting her watch it till the video wore out. The production team includes original members from the 1992 motion picture including Academy Award winner, Catherine

Narana brings out bush taste CAFE Narana at Narana Aboriginal Cultural Centre is the perfect place for the whole family to be immersed in a new world of culture. The recent addition of the café to the centre has been welcomed by locals and tourists alike. Manager Jodie describes the meals as fresh, providing a healthy and “wholesome” experience. With an all-day breakfast, the most popular dish is the bush berry pancakes with salted caramel ice-cream. Customers are made to feel welcome as they are immediately immersed in Aboriginal culture, with eight roof panels telling an indigenous story. A family friendly environment, there is a playground outside for children as well as a chance to feed the emus. With the menu also changing seasonally to reflect Aboriginal culture, summer dishes include kangaroo sliders as well as the indigenous tasting plate with calamari, smoked veal, potato salad and snapper taco. “We try to experiment,” Jodie explained. Meals are made using herbs and spices from Outback Pride, a local Australian organisation where all proceeds from packets sold from Narana’s Gift Shop go back to the community.

Connecting people and communities

One of the signature dishes at Cafe Narana. A foodie group is one of many programs run at the centre where a group of friends can head to the bush track and learn how to use wild ingredients in their own home. Jodie encourages customers

to ask any member of staff for cooking tips and questions about indigenous culture. The café is open 8am to 4pm Tuesday to Saturday. Café Narana is at 410 Torquay Road Grovedale, phone 5241 5700.

LOW-IMPACT collisions typical in shopping centre car parks are annoying to say the least. Add to this the fact that people rarely own up to damaging other people’s cars. It has been noticed that drivers are often scared to back-up any further due to very limited vision. These are the occasions where reverse sensors are very welcome. Bumper Master fits reversing sensors to help customers overcome fears of backing into objects or even pedestrians. Reversing sensors help prevent damage to owners’ cars as well as the vehicles of neighbours and other motorists. They can also help when backing out of tight garages and past narrow gateposts. Bumper Master can also help owners improve the appearance of bumpers when selling vehicles. Bumpers are the first part of any car to incur damage – and first impressions are important when trying to sell. All Bumper Master repairs come with a no-questions-asked warranty to give customers peace of mind. Best of all, most bumper repairs are done for less than the cost of insurance excesses. Located behind VicRoads at 3 Dowsett St, South Geelong, Bumper Master has proven experience in providing an alternative repair service to the bumper regions of any car. Owners wanting to improve the resale value of their cars should phone Bumper Master on 5221 0138.

Gary Keleman has given 33 years of his best personal service to city IT’S THE personal touch that sets Keleman Motors apart. Gary Keleman has been in the business since 1982, so he must be doing something right. His care and attention to detail has enhanced his hard-won reputation in the car repair trade. The personal service includes a drop off and pick up service to the city. Gary is known as a Mazda specialist but his tried and true slogan, ‘Anything on any car’, sums up his approach. “We do all major and minor repairs, including exhaust, brakes, clutches and suspension,” Gary explains. “Plus we do the full range of upgrades and servicing, including air-conditioner re-gassing.” Gary and Mazda go back a long way, including his top qualifications in the repair and servicing of the famous rotary engine. Gary uses only genuine parts in his new-car repair and servicing work. “This way our customers can be sure their factory warranties are not affected.” He says customers should be able to receive dealer level service without paying dealer level prices. “We’re always happy to give a quote so the customer knows exactly what they are up for,” he says. Gary’s recently renovated workshop boasts the latest in diagnostic and scanner equipment. “We’re proud of the quality of all work we undertake and our competitive rates.” Keleman Motors is at shop 3, 13 Crown St, South Geelong, phone 5229 9555.

$50 off heel pain consultation HEEL pain affects over 80 per cent of Australians at some time in their lives. Common symptoms include: pain or a bruising feeling first thing in the morning; throbbing at the end of the day; stiffness and/ or soreness when standing up after sitting; and pain during and/or after activity. Foot + Leg Pain Clinics musculoskeletal podiatrist Dr David Kavanagh says a lot of misinformation surrounds heel pain, often leading to misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment.

“The symptoms are usually misdiagnosed as either heel spurs or plantar fasciitis,” Dr Kavanagh says. “Most heel pain occurs when the plantar fascia, the connective tissues running along the bottom of the foot, becomes degenerated and can’t tolerate normal weightbearing loads. “The fascia can become strained often leading to the formation of a heel spur. “However, the spur itself rarely causes pain - it’s the degen-

eration of the surrounding plantar fascia or soft tissue that does. This is known as plantar fasciosis, not fasciitis. “One is degenerative, the other inflammatory, and they need to be treated differently, so must be diagnosed properly.” Foot + Leg Pain Clinics are experts in treating heel pain and associated issues. Anyone mentioning this article will receive $50 off an initial consultation at Foot + Leg Pain Clinics Belmont. Appointments are available by phoning 1300 328 300. Most people do not apply enough sunscreen.

Skin protection a summer key AUSTRALIANS love spending time outdoors whether it’s at the beach, heading to the park with the kids or enjoying a good Aussie barbeque with friends. But it’s also the time of year where skin protection steps are needed most. Statistics show two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer before the age of 70 and the incidence of skin cancer is on the rise. Leading Geelong plastic surgeon Ian Holten and his team of GPs at Australian Skin Face Body are highly trained in detecting, di-

Heel pain is usually easily treated but misdiagnosis remains a problem.

agnosing and treating skin cancer. Mr Holten says skin cancers can be treated with early detection and prevention is better than cure. “Unprotected exposure to sunlight is known to cause skin cancer. It’s important to cover up, especially between 10am and 3pm when UV index levels reach their peak,” Mr Holten says. “Applying a good quality, broad spectrum sunscreen is crucial - even on a cool and overcast day, UV rays can be high. “It’s also important to have a full body skin check every year

for early detection of skin cancers,” advises Mr Holten. Not all skin cancers start out as moles, so it is important to be checked by a trained eye. Australian Skin Face Body has a team of doctors trained by Mr Holten and experienced in skin checks and skin cancer prevention. A skin check will cost only $30 after the Medicare rebate. The clinic at 50 Western Beach Rd has ample car parking at the back and no referral is necessary. Appointments are available now on 5221 8444.

Award-winning gardens open for Australia Day TWO GARDENS on the Surf Coast will feature twilight openings as part of Open Gardens Australia’s program for Australia Day weekend. Anglesea's Sunnymeade, a recent winner in the Landscaping Victoria Awards, showcases beautiful stone walls, native grasses, emu bushes, beds of tough natives and a Moonah forest. The garden highlight includes stunning sculptural Stringy Bark twisted trees, enhanced by the cleverly designed garden. Visitors will be able to amble through the fascinating garden while enjoying sculptures, wine tasting and a barbecue run by the local CFA. Set against a backdrop of ancient Red Gums,

Ghazeepore is a romantic farm garden situated on a meandering creek. Featuring winding paths leading to repeat plantings of hardy species, small copse of Cork Oaks and raised vegetable beds, Ghazeepore also boasts many fruit trees. Visitors will enjoy jazz performances and tours of revegetation belts along the creek. Sunnymeade is at 48 Harvey Street, Anglesea while Ghazeepore is at 680 Ghazeepore Rd, Freshwater Creek. The gardens will open from noon to 6.30pm on 24 and 25 January. Entry is $8 with children under-18 admitted free.

DELIGHTFUL: Anglesea’s Sunnymeade will be open for visitors.

IndySport Kingfish hold court on peninsula

Finals beckon after time out

On the

bite

Chris Pitman

IT WAS a fantastic start to the year for anglers, with mighty kingfish to beast bream and anything in-between finding its way into fishing bags. Clifton Springs was a popular location over the holiday period and with good reason. Joshua Bourke found himself anchored up just out from the Point Richards shipping channel last Friday in search snapper. When Joshua’s rod loaded up and drag screamed he knew he had a good fish connected and after a nervous fight boated a 5.5kg 83cm long snapper. Other anglers found great numbers of squid over the grass beds in three to five metres of water. Those wading in the shallows of an evening landed some outstanding flathead to 55cm by casting plastics. In the lead up to Christmas, Swan Bay was producing some of the best mixed bags yet seen. Chris Saddington spent some time over New Year fishing the Swan Bay jetty. He had a ripper of a morning Christmas eve landing a well-conditioned gummy shark of 5kg and dropping another three at the jetty. Wanting to replicate his success Chris returned to the jetty, catching a chunky pinkie snapper of just over 40cm. Chris noted that early morning starts were a key to his success. Over at Queenscliff, the harbour is holding good numbers of silver trevally to 45cm for anglers fishing the last of the run in tide. Out on the grass beds whiting to 40cm are on offer for anglers fishing baits such as pippie and tenderised squid. Kingfish are on the minds of most anglers at Queenscliff and should make an appearance anytime soon. Offshore comes into its own this time of the year. Over the holiday break smaller kingfish were taken around Charlemont reef as well as some thumping big salmon. Matt Walker wanted to test out the new rod he received for Christmas so he ventured off Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads. He encountered good numbers of kingfish to 65cm, putting his

AFTER a two-week break for Christmas and New Year, cricket returns to local playing fields tomorrow, and while some will already be looking forward to finals action, others will be scrambling just to be a part of it. Geelong Cricket Club had some encouraging results prior to the break and will be hoping the momentum can continue against Prahran in a two day game over the next two Saturdays. While Prahran sits in third position, there’s no reason the Cats can’t take it right up to them if some of the more experienced players such as Hayden Butterworth and Jeremy Hart can put in a good performance. In Geelong Cricket Association, a round of one day games is scheduled, before the season reverts to two day games from here on in. Geelong City will host South Barwon in an important match for the finals aspirations of both sides, as well as those around them on the ladder. City, after enjoying a relatively easy draw for the first two months, now face the better sides, an opportunity it will relish, particularly after being in a strong position against East Belmont last

Local

cricket Jim Timberlake

game before a sprinkler malfunction washed out the game. South Barwon enjoyed some patchy form through October and November, but prior to Christmas it was on fire and moving up the ladder at a rate of knots. With so much to play for, this will be a great game, but it looks like South Barwon might just have too much depth and should win. Lara v EAST BELMONT, ST JOSEPHS v Geelong West, Leopold v NORTH GEELONG, MURGHEBOLUC v Bell Post Hill, GROVEDALE v Newtown & Chilwell In division two, a big gap has opened up between the top six and bottom six. Fifth placed St Peters take on sixth side Modewarre tomorrow and the winner can virtually book a finals spot, while the loser will be vulnerable to any club that emerges from the chasing pack. Mathew Robinson has been in

great form for Modewarre, while Stephen and Hayden Illingworth top the table for St Peters. Both sides have played well with young squads and will be keen to start the new year on the right note, however Modewarre might just have the X factor here. Guild St Marys v HIGHTON, Torquay v MARSHALL, Newcomb & District v ST ALBANS BREAKWATER, Alexander Thomson v THOMSON, Waurn Ponds v MANIFOLD HEIGHTS In division three, the top of the table clash between Shelford and Meredith looks like being a run feast, with both sides boasting plenty of weapons. The Lymer brothers, Michael and Shane, hold the key for Shelford, while their ex-team mates from Bell Post Hill days, Ty Watts and Troy Bott, are capable of big scores for Meredith. It may well be a case of a lesser light from either side stepping up with a match winning performance, and if so, Shelford look to have a bit more depth. Inverleigh v WINCHELSEA, BELL PARK v Corio, Lethbridge v TEESDALE, Corio Bay v LITTLE RIVER, Bannockburn bye.

Soccer cup delivers local derbies By PAUL MILLAR REGAL: Matt Walker scored these kingfish off Ocean Grove. new rod through its paces. Further down the coast at Fishos, Ali Smith landed a snapper of 45cm fishing out of her kayak. Anglers casting lures from the beach at Bancoora encountered salmon to 2kg. During the break many anglers travelled far and wide. Jim Robinson found himself at Lake Bullen Merri on New Year’s Eve where he took two Chinook salmon at 2.7kg and 2.2kg. Jim was fishing in 30 meters of water and found live minnow to be extremely effective bait. Fishing as light as possible also helped him to get bites from the finicky salmon. Anyone looking for options next week should consider chasing kingfish and salmon off

Ocean Grove or Barwon Heads. Charlemont reef is another good place to start for both species. Try jigging for the kingfish and casting small slugs for salmon. Snapper will still be on offer at the channel out from Clifton Springs, so fishing an evening tide change will see you in with the best chance. Spinning the beaches around Lorne for salmon will remain productive. Lake Bullen Merri will be worth the time for Chinook salmon. Drifting lightly weighted pilchard fillets should see you find one or two. Send reports and photos to info@ raylongtackle.com.au. All photos go in Tackle World Geelong’s draw for a monthly prize.

THE LONGEST running soccer cup series in Victoria will showcase the oldest rivals in the region when Geelong Rangers takes on Geelong in the Diversity Cup later this month. Both clubs have appointed new coaches for the upcoming season with Geelong locking in former Exeter professional Mike Cooper to a two year deal. Rangers have also signed a former English professional play-

er with Dave Perkin, a one-time Stoke City player, taking charge at Myers Reserve. The two coaches will be keen to test out their players in the twilight series with Geelong almost certain to have the edge in fitness after starting training before the Christmas break. Both sides will face off on January 25 at Hume Reserve, followed later in the night by a showdown between Bell Park and ambitious guest side Lara.

Last year’s finalists North Geelong will confront Corio in the opening match of the tournament on January 23. Both sides are on a high after winning promotion in their respective leagues with Corio looking to cause an upset against the tournament’s long-time favourites. The pre-season tournament has been running annually since 1981 and features the top ranked sides in the region, ensuring plenty of derby clashes.

Geelong hosts swimming champs One of the biggest events on the Swimming Victoria calendar, the Victorian Country Championships, hits Geelong this month, attracting thousands of visitors. More than 800 of country Victoria’s best swimmers will compete over three days across 108

events. Geelong Swimming Club placed second in last year’s event in Wodonga. Geelong previously hosted the championship in 2011. The championships will be at Kardinia Aquatic Centre from 24 to 26 January.

FREESTYLE: Geelong Sharks captain Erin Docherty will compete.
