ISSUE OF THE YEAR committee, Kath Holton, said the celebrations successfully brought the community together as one. “I think we achieved that with bells on,” she said. Former Yarra Ranges Mayor Fiona McAllister echoed the accolades, saying the birthday was an incredible achievement for the town.

“The 150th is a great opportunity for the community to come together, and literally hundreds have been involved in planning the activities.” The rich and colourful history of the area was celebrated at the Heritage Festival, where future generations could gain an understanding of days gone by. The Heritage Festival hosted
during the celebrations to tell stories of his time in the town, before the Healesville railway walk was officially opened. A banner carried by primary school students in the parade perfectly summed up the sentiments of the day and the community feeling – “Healesville is a mighty town!” The Mail printed a 150th anniversary souvenir edition in October as well as the ‘150 Faces of Healesville’ edition in July, which collected an assortment of people’s anecdotes and favourite things about the town.

steam engines, historic displays from a number of community groups, a wood-chopping competition and live music performed through Saturday and Sunday. Another highlight were the 15 steam engines that took to the road in a special parade from Yarra Glen to Healesville. Heritage Chairman Brett Whelan said the parade broke an Australian record for the most road steam engines travelling between two towns. The last stationmaster of the Healesville railway station, Nick Roe, was also on hand

THE 150th anniversary of Healesville has been named the Mail’s issue of 2014, after a successful year of celebrations. Over 12 months of preparations finally came to fruition last November when the entirety of Healesville gathered to commemorate the milestone. More than 800 locals from a variety of community groups marched down Maroondah Highway to open the festivities on Saturday 8 November, welcomed by a crowd of thousands. The parade was led by Wurund-
jeri and other Aboriginal tribe members, with a hand-made Bunjil the Eagle as the parade’s figurehead. Wurundjeri Elder Alan Wandin said he was honoured to have such a significant involvement in the parade. “That we were asked to lead the parade is recognition and acknowledgement of who you are,” he said. There were a variety of other celebrations on the day including a Party in the Park and the Healesville Heritage Festival. Community 3777 Chair and member of the organising

Full of love for life OBITUARY “GOTTA love ya and leave ya. Just one of many of Crowy’s quotable quotes. “She’ll be right, “computers are a passing fad and “let’s go and get wet are a few more that resonated with laughter and tears as family and friends farewelled Bryce Crow at the Yarra Valley Racing Centre on 13 November. Bryce’s death from cancer at just 46 years of age hit those who loved him hard. And, as someone who was born, grew up, worked, owned businesses and raised his family in the town, he was known, loved and liked by many. The eldest of Jim and Jan Crow’s two boys, he was born at Healesville Hospital on 19 January 1968. Four years later, Ashley completed the tight-knit Crow family. Bryce went to Healesville Primary School and Lilydale Tech. School didn’t suit him much - or he didn’t suit it. After leaving he worked as an apprentice mechanic before starting Crows Transport business. In 2005 he and wife Catherine bought Healesville Stockfeeds. They were pursuits that put him in daily contact with hundreds of ‘locals’ - and he loved it. With the unique insights and a degree of loving disrespect that only a younger brother can bring, Ashley delivered a moving and amusing tribute as he shared a lifetime of anecdotes supporting his opening comment ... “Bryce loved life. “He was an incredible bloke, fun-loving, funny, a sh**-stirrer, humble, not very politically correct, but a very genuine, no fuss, don’t

was a genuine reflection of who he was. He was lovely to deal with. He was a good friend whose quick wit and unique sense of humour could make someone’s day, but which was also backed up with a genuine concern for the happiness and well-being of the people who made up his many and diverse friendships. Bryce passed away on 7 November 2014 following recurrent diagnosis of cancer. He got to say goodbye in a phone message played at the service, to request that his ashes be sprinkled under the Bonnie Doon Bridge by a nude skier (do-able according to Ashley) and for XXXX beer to be served at his wake. “He didn’t want everybody else to enjoy themselves too much if he wasn’t here to join in, Ashley said. That, however, was never going to happen over-ruled in the name of good taste! There was a standing ovation from the 700-strong gathering as Mitchell and Georgia took their dad on a final lap of honour in his beloved little green Morris Minor; a lump of firewood in the back and his favourite old hat on the coffin. Bryce Leonard Crow will be sadly missed by his family, friends and the Healesville community. - KATH GANNAWAY

at that stage of Bryce’s life. The biggest turning point in his life came when he met Catherine. “It was the greatest thing that could have ever happened to him, Ashley said. He was ribbed mercilessly after sharing his frog and princess analogy with Ashley and other mates, but no-one had any doubts that they would be forever true soul-mates. They shared a love of entertaining and just being around family and friends, but he also enjoyed quieter times with weekends away in the city with Catherine or long weekend breaks with just his family. He was a loving dad, and a fun dad, to Mitch who was born in 1999, and Georgia born in 2001. A video made by Georgia for Father’s Day last year and played during the service was a poignant and beautiful expression of the love he gave and got as a dad. He was enormously proud of his kids. After being diagnosed in 2007 with cancer, he and Catherine ensured that every opportunity was taken to make memories for the future - whatever that was to be. The contribution Bryce made to the Healesville community was not complicated, or grand. He was an astute and ethical businessman whose smile and helpful approach to customers

take yourself too seriously, she’ll be right type of bloke,â€? he said. He loved the outdoors, was a member of the Yarra Valley 4WD Club and, following in his dad’s footsteps, was a volunteer with Healesville CFA. Spending time with family and friends was his passion and his priority from holidays up at Bonnie Doon when he was growing up, water skiing and four-wheel driving in the bush as a young man and later with his own family, Catherine, son Mitchell and daughter Georgia. “His weekends were always booked well in advance and if he wasn’t away up the (Eildon) weir he was up the bush, down at Bairnsdale or Loch Sport, up at Tamworth, Bathurst, a truck or car show somewhere, at a ute muster, or going to see his favourite band Ruckus or some other social event somewhere; he just never stopped,â€? Drive to remember By JESSE GRAHAM A CAR cruise to remember victims of Black Saturday will return in 2015, after being previously cancelled due to a lack of funding. The Black Saturday Remembrance Cruise will come back to the Yarra Valley on Saturday 7 February, with hundreds of cars - new and old - expected to flood the roads. Organisers Troy and Stacey Kinsmore confirmed to the Mail the event was up-and-running for its fourth year, after receiving funding support from local businesses, such as Healesville’s RACV Country Club. Mrs Kinsmore said the funding would cover the event’s public liability insurance, and that she was relieved the event would be going forward. Though the event will not feature its usual large-scale raffle, local band Exploded View would take to the stage to perform once more and a remembrance ceremony would be held late in the afternoon. The event is held on the first Saturday of February to coincide with the Black Saturday bushfires, but 2015 will be the first year since the fires that 7 February has fallen on a Saturday.
Troy and Stacey Kinsmore said the Black Saturday Remembrance Picture: JESSE GRAHAM Cruise will be back in 2015. 132291 “We debated on whether to hold it on the anniversary next year,” Mrs Kinsmore said. “Unfortunately, the few companies I’ve spoken to lately have the notion that everyone should actually be over the fires, so there’s not many actual remembrance ceremonies organised - we felt it was even more important to hold the event then.”
Mr and Mrs Kinsmore organised the event to pay tribute to their friend, Kate Ansett, who died in the 2009 fires, and the couple said around 500 cars on average have taken part each year. Mrs Kinsmore said people taking part in the cruise had their own recollections and feelings about the fires, many of which they share on the day.
“People say it’s nice to sit in their car and have their own reflection,” she said. “You’re in your own quiet space, and then you can share it with everyone else. “We’re remembering what happened on Black Saturday - I think that’s important not to forget.” As with previous years, the cruise will depart from 101-127 Beresford Road in Lilydale at 3pm, for an arrival at Healesville Railway Station at 4pm - the remembrance ceremony will begin at 5pm. The cruise will wind through Yarra Glen, up to Toolangi and down through Chum Creek, though the route may be shortened depending on the weather. All cars are welcomed to the cruise, and the $10 entry fee is donated to the Healesville CFA. In its three years of operation, the event has raised around $25,000 for the brigade. Mr and Mrs Kinsmore said the event may be cancelled if the fire danger for the day is declared severe, extreme or code red. For more information, call 0421 321 203 or email smbrocky@yahoo. com.au.
Body find may solve missing man mystery POLICE believe the body of a man found near Lyrebird Avenue at East Warburton last month may be that of Walter Wilhelm. Mr Wilhelm, 86, had been missing from his Wonga Park home since Thursday 18 December and the body was discovered on Monday 29 December. Mr Wilhelm, known to family and friends as ‘Wally’, had previously lived in Warburton. It is believed he visited his wife’s grave at the Wesburn Cemetery on the Friday. Police and the family had expressed grave concerns for Mr Wilhelm’s welfare which sparked ground and air searches. Sergeant Sharon Darcy of Victoria Police, in a media release just after midnight on 29 December, said police had received a report around 6pm that a white Hyundai i30 sedan, the type Mr Wilhelm was driving, was bogged on the Yarra-Silvan Conduit clearing near Lyrebird Avenue. Police identified the car as Mr Wilhelm’s and a search of the area located the body of a man nearby. Sgt Darcy said that at the time of the release a formal identification had not been made. Police do not believe there are any suspicious circumstances but will await the results of an autopsy.

EVERYTHING you ever wanted to know about donkeys, including just how much fun they can be, will be the focus of a festival at Wesburn this Saturday. Linda Jay, representative for the Donkey Society of Victoria in Yarra Ranges, is organising the festival at Wesburn Park, which will run from 9am on Saturday 18 January. Linda breeds miniature donkeys on her East Warburton property and has a rescue donkey. She says people will be surprised to discover what an amazing animal the donkey is. “I take my donkeys down the street for walks and while there’s an increasing interest in donkeys, it’s amazing how often people will say they have never seen one before,” Linda said. Donkeys make great pets, are great to ride particularly good for children learning to ride, and can be taught to pull a cart. Activities at the festival begin at 9.30am, and include show classes, events including an obstacle course, a fancy dress competition for donkeys and their owners and presentations from equine health experts. Market stalls, food and coffee vendors will supplement the activities, which also include donkey rides and face painting for children and live music over lunch. Linda said that unlike horses who will run when they are frightened, or zebras whose reaction is to fight, donkeys adapt a more laidback and intelligent approach.
ONE of the most spectacular natural features of the Yarra State Forest near Powelltown has been targeted by vandals over the holidays. Seven Acre Rock, a massive and secluded rock outcrop with views as far as Western Port, was among several items marred by graffiti late last year. The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) is investigating the graffiti attacks on two scenic areas in the Yarra State Forest and seeking information from the public that may assist police. The DELWP’s Wally Notman said all the signs, bollards and the public toilet were spray painted at Seven Acre Rock. “The offenders did not stop there and also spray painted granite rocks along the walking track and the main lookout,” Mr Notman said. “The lookout provides views of the surrounding hills out to West Gippsland and Western Port bay and has been damaged by thoughtless vandals. “The Powelltown picnic area signs providing information for visitors to the Yarra Forest were also damaged with graffiti.
BE COOL
Linda Jay, in costume with “Mouse”, is inviting people around the valley and beyond to come to this Saturday’s Donkey Festival. “Donkey instinct is to stop, have a look at the situation and make a decision on what to do,” she said. “Because they don’t have that flight instinct, if someone comes past you on a motorbike for instance, they will just take a step sideways and have a look, making them a much safer ride.” This steadiness, and willingness to serve, goes on display every year when one of her donkeys, Banjo, takes part in the Anzac march at Yarra Junction. The festival is aimed at the wider community with funds raised going towards the welfare of donkeys along with Upper Yarra SES. Entry is $5 for adults, $2 per child or $10 for families, and dogs are not allowed on-site. Anyone who would like help with organisation, offer an activity or volunteer on the day, can contact Linda on 0409 664 074 or by emailing cherryripewheels@hotmail.com.

2014 – THE YEAR THAT WAS…
THE ISSUES
People take power
Heat on hot button issues
COMMUNITY opposition to the closure of a number of local organisations was a consistent theme, with the campaign to save the Healesville Hospital again a dominant issue. The Save Healesville Hospital Action Group (SHHAG) is currently having an independent business case study undertaken to determine whether the hospital is best run by Eastern Health or independently. It was announced that the Healesville tip would close in early 2015 despite much criticism of Yarra Ranges Council’s consultation process. More than 500 locals signed a petition to save the tip and the council received not a single letter supporting the closure. Healesville’s White Rabbit Brewery also announced it would close its doors in 2015 and the company will relocate the business to its other premises in Geelong. Healesville saw a third closure during the year of its ANZ bank branch, with the company citing low visitation rates. The decision drew much criticism from locals and bank representatives were confronted at a public meeting after the announcement. However it was also a year of renewal. Yarra Valley Historic Railway received $3.56 million from the government for restoration and the long-awaited Warburton Skate Park opened in October. The 2014 Talk the Toll campaign covered everything from personal stories to statistics, results of police operations and advice in a poignant
Healesville Hospital DISCUSSIONS about Healesville Hospital’s future intensified during 2014, particularly in the lead-up to the state election in November. The Save Healesville Hospital Action Group (SHHAG) held a successful fundraiser at White Rabbit Brewery earlier in the year, finishing off its fundraising efforts to run an independent business case study into the hospital that began in 2013. The case study is aiming to ask one critical question of the hospital - would it be better run by Eastern Health or independently as a small rural health service? However, the issue became more intensely heated after the group was seemingly stonewalled - despite making initial requests for data to the Health Department in May and throughout the year, followed by a formal request in September, the group did not receive the data needed for the study until November. Both the Health Department and Eastern Health denied any wrongdoing on the matter and representatives from both groups cited intensive work to collect and refine the data before it was released. Nonetheless, the issue quickly became divisive between political groups and saw heated exchanges right throughout the year. The hospital is also undertaking a comprehensive $7.8 million redevelopment this year, following consultation during 2014 - the plans for the hospital’s future are now public, and the redevelopment is expected to finish in early 2016.The business case study is now progressing, and the Mail will cover the results and the impacts it may have. Healesville 150th birthday HEALESVILLE’S long-awaited 150th birthday bash was celebrated in November after more than a year of preparation. Continued next page

Another appeal to VCAT was lodged by the Narconon drug rehabilitation centre after the council’s decision to reject a planning application to move the facility from East Warburton to Green Gables in Warburton. The best qualities of the community came out on several occasions. Upper Yarra Emergency Service organisations banded together to help snow tourists when six cars slid into trouble on snow-covered Mount Donna Buang. The Woori Yallock Township Action Group officially opened the WYTAG Reserve in June. Fires again made headlines with
blazes in Healesville and Gladysdale, and Ron and Carol Sykes publically thanked their neighbours and the Reefton CFA for their help after their home burned to the ground. The historic Woori Yallock Hotel also burnt down in October, leaving the owners, local patrons and staff devastated. Sully the superhero cat was credited with saving his owner Craig Geeves from a fire that destroyed their Wandin house in October with his relentless scratching and growling to wake Craig up. reminder for drivers to be safe on the roads. Logging was another persistent issue and there was much debate over whether to create the Great Forest National Park in Toolangi. Along with many of the other debates this year, this became an election issue with each candidate either declaring their support or opposition. David Attenborough and renowned scientist David Lindenmeyer advocated for the creation of the park to protect the habitat of the Leadbeater’s Possum. 2014 – THE YEAR THAT WAS… More than 800 members of the Healesville community came together to mark the milestone with a march down the main street on Saturday 8 November. Several other events were held across the weekend to mark the occasion. The Liberty Family Church organised the Party in the Park and the Healesville Heritage Festival saw 15 steam engines make the trip from Yarra Glen to Healesville. The contributions of the Wurundjeri people to the town were honoured with a community event at the Healesville Belonging Place. Then mayor of Yarra Ranges Council Fiona McAllister was delighted with the celebrations as the town showcased the best it had to offer. “The 150th is a great opportunity for the community to come together, and literally hundreds have been involved in planning the activities,” she said. As part of the celebrations, the Mail printed a special edition featuring the portraits of 150 residents who explained what they like about living in Healesville. About 20,000 people were estimated to have attended the celebrations during the day across the town. Ice THE fight against the drug ice has been a major issue for not just the outer eastern suburbs but for

the whole state of Victoria. The drug - which can turn normal law-abiding citizens into violent and desperate criminals - has been the focus of a war waged by police, politicians and the community. “We’re seeing otherwise stable people - married, a job, young children, a mortgage - the whole deal and both are addicted to ice and falling apart at the seams,” Yarra Junction police officer Kevin Largue said. The increase in use of ice has led to campaigns to warn the public of the dangers of the drug, which is highly addictive. Police have reported high levels of drugrelated crime, such as theft, assault and family violence, as a result of increased usage. Kevin Largue from Yarra Junction Police highlighted the increase in the use of the drug as a serious concern for all members of the community. “Ice is an increasing problem and it’s in every part of society, not just down in the suburbs,” he told the Mail in May. The war against ice will continue into 2015. Healesville Tip HEALESVILLE’S tip was dumped this year after the Yarra Ranges Council voted a plan to lock the gates for the last time in February 2015. The decision in June was made despite huge opposition to the tip’s closing, including a petition of more than 500 signatures to keep it open. In March the council advertised the intention to close the tip, pending 28 days of consultation. It was after this announcement that the community rallied to fight against the planned closure. Healesville Action Group (HAG) member John Anwin spoke against the closure and said he was disappointed at the council’s decision. He believed the council ignored the community consultation. “Over 600 people said that the tip needs to remain - but they made up their mind,” he told the Mail in June. Councillor Terry Avery voted in favour of the tip closure and said that low visitation and the proximity of the Coldstream Tip influenced his vote. He also said the need to curb spending made the decision necessary. Continued next page

From page 5 Coldstream’s future YARRA Ranges Council and Coldstream community members have been rallying support to improve the town, to increase tourist visitation and population numbers. Meetings were held all through 2014 to discuss different facets of the town and how they could be improved, with ideas from beautification projects through to an ambitious push to re-draw green wedge boundaries to allow development. Coldstream’s main housing and shopping districts are hemmed in by the Urban Growth Boundary and green wedge sites, severely limiting the amount of new developments that can occur, and residents often debated whether expanding would be beneficial. However, the idea was put on hold after the 29 November state election, when both the Labor and Liberal parties announced they would be against changing any green wedge boundaries. Then-Shadow Planning Minister Brian Tee announced prior to the election that an elected Labor government would preserve all green wedge boundaries for the life of the government. The council is currently working on a draft structure plan for the town, and community groups have been formed to advocate for improvements and events in the area.
The Leadbeater’s Possum has been central to the debate over the Great Forest National Park proposal. 118967 Picture: JESSE GRAHAM Great Forest National Park THE debate over whether to create the Great Forest National Park (GFNP) in Toolangi was hotly contested in 2014. The proposal to create the park would link the Yarra Ranges National Park and the Kinglake National Park. It is a huge issue in an area with strong historical and current ties to logging, at a time when the world is facing pressure to act on climate change and the environment. The GFNP became a central issue in November’s state election, with the Liberal, National, ALP and Australian Country Alliance opposing the proposal, while the Greens supported it. Renowned natural historian and filmmaker David Attenborough weighed into the debate in
November, advocating for the creation of the park. He said the park’s creation was vital to protect the environment for future generations and ensure the survival of the Leadbeater’s possum. Narconon THE Upper Yarra community became up-in-arms about the possibility of a drug rehabilitation facility moving to Warburton, with debate raging and the proposal put to council early last year. The SayNoNarcononWarburton group was formed in response to the proposal, which would see the rehabilitation centre relocated next to Warburton Primary School from its current place at the O’Shannassy Lodge in East Warburton. Narconon spokesperson Dr Nerida James was vocal through the year in responding to some of the community’s concerns, such as shutting down rumours that the facility would have needle exchanges and methadone programs. Numerous discussions were had through 2014, and the Mail covered different arguments and facets of the case, along with a unanimous decision by Yarra Ranges councillors to refuse a permit for the centre’s relocation in March. The decision has since been appealed through the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT). A decision from the tribunal is expected in coming weeks.

LESS than half of the more than 100 people attending a fire meeting in Warburton on 16 December were aware of warning messages mentioning Warburton that day. The messages went out in relation to a fire 20 kilometres north east of Warburton and while they were advisory messages indicating no danger to the Upper Yarra townships, it raised the question of how prepared and aware people are of potential risk. There was a surreal atmosphere at the meeting with the 33-degree day drawing to a close with the sound of helicopters flying overhead and a rush to close the doors of the packed CFA vehicle bays as speakers were drowned out by the sound of rain pelting down on the tin roof. The attendance did demonstrate that there is a level of concern for a fire season that authorities are predicting to be one of the worst. A few hands went up when Warburton CFA Captain Hazel Clothier asked who was aware of the fires in progress “over the hill” at Acheron. There was no response either to questions on what the rating and warning terms mean that Ms Clothier said would determine the decisions people need to make about what they will do in certain situations. The meeting aimed to address those issues and information was provided throughout the meeting along with leads to relevant websites and apps. Virginia McCallum, Community Liaison Bushfire Man-
Warburton Fire Brigade Captain Hazel Clothier addresses the meeting. 132918 agement officer with CFA District 13 set the scene, saying conditions were about six weeks ahead of what would be expected in a normal summer. “Grasslands are about 65 per cent cured and the forest is ready burn; in fact it is burning as we speak,” she said. She said other speakers who had planned to attend the meeting had been at the Incident Control Centre all day. “I want you to go away from here knowing that the fire season has started,” she said. Fielding questions on topics from Neighbourhood Safer Places (the lack of), to stay or go options, Code Red and what it means in terminology, impact and response, radiant heat and protective clothing, what to do if caught out in your car, to the need for written fire plans and to check insurance, Ms McCallum spoke informatively and directly. “You will need more than one fire plan, because things are going to be different on different days of the week,” she said. “Your plan could depend on what you are doing, but also on different fire ratings if you are using those ratings as a trigger. “I would say that on a Code Red Day the only way you can
be safe is to be well out of the area, and you would need to go the day before,” she said. A major concern from residents was around restrictions on what work they were allowed to do to remove vegetation to protect their own property, and council and crown land that some residents said was overgrown and a fire risk that was not being addressed. Ms McCallum said she could not answer on behalf of the council, or other bodies, she gave an undertaking to take those concerns back to the council. Kevin Bargar from Warburton Emergency Planning Group spoke on the initiatives they were working on. He said their first priority was to get the ABC repeater station back to provide reliable broadcasts in the Upper Yarra Valley. He said they were also working with Casey MP Tony Smith on the Mobile Phone Black Spot program. WEPG meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 7pm at the CFA. “We’re happy to have people come along and could certainly use some more people to join us as helping hands,” he said.

Nabbed: speedsters on the rise in Yarra Ranges By JESSE GRAHAM MORE than 1000 drivers were caught speeding on Yarra Ranges roads over the holiday period, when police took to the streets in huge numbers as part of their Summer Stay campaign. The Summer Stay campaign was made up of four different operations - Operation RAID (Remove All Impaired Drivers), Operation Breakup, Operation Crossroads and Operation Fresh Start - each focusing on a different area of dangerous driving behaviours. Beginning on 14 November, the final operation wound up on 4 January, and Victoria Police’s provisional results of the campaign showed 1027 drivers caught for speeding offences in the Yarra Ranges alone. Drink driving was one of the primary dangerous behaviours in the crosshairs through Operation RAID, and 62 drivers were issued with drinkdriving infringements over the entire campaign.
Police in the Yarra Ranges caught 62 drunk drivers over the Summer Stay campaign. 1.2 million breath tests were conducted state-wide Picture: KATH GANNAWAY over the campaign. 116794 Meanwhile, 112 drivers were caught using their mobile phones while driving, 86 people were caught travelling without their seat belts and 54 others were found driving while disqualified or suspended. Police also rounded up 54 unlicensed drivers, 158 unregistered vehicles, 53 drivers disobeying signs or
signals and impounded five vehicles. One notable example found its way onto the Yarra Ranges Eyewatch Facebook page, which is run by Victoria Police. Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol Leading Senior Constable Graeme Rust posted that police pulled over a 20-year-old Mooroolbark man after
he was caught driving at 104 km/h in a 60km/h zone in Seville. After pulling him over, police discovered that the driver only had a Learner’s Permit and was travelling without any plates displayed or another driver in the car. “His car was impounded under the hoon laws and he will face Ringwood Magistrates’ Court for trying to evade police, speeding and other traffic matters,” Leading Sen Const Rust wrote. Road Policing Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill said while the campaign had finished, the road safety message stayed the same. “The results show we are catching many dangerous drivers before it is too late, however there are still far too many people putting their life and the lives of others at risk,” he said. “If everyone stays alert, sober and within the speed limit then we will take a major step towards our goal of zero deaths and serious injuries on the road.”
Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol Sergeant John Morgan spoke to the Mail late last year and said that local police would have a number of their own operations running over the same period and through the coming months. Operation Surreptitious, for example, will run until May along the Black Spur and Reefton Spur, where police will be targeting drivers and motorcycle riders speeding along the popular roads. Despite many being caught doing the wrong thing on the roads over the holiday period, the road toll in the Yarra Ranges dropped by three deaths between 2013 and 2014, with five deaths recorded last year. This is in contrast to the state-wide road toll, which rose from 243 to 248 in the same period, after a decline that saw 2013 with the lowest road toll on record. The Mail contacted Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol for comment on the Summer Stay campaign and the road toll, but no response was received by deadline.

Healesville Street scenes of fantastic festival ANOTHER year, another success. That’s how Healesville Chamber of Commerce president Graham Taylor looks back at the latest Healesville Christmas Festival which drew more than 1000 people to the town’s main street. The festival has been organised by the Chamber each year, through business and public contributions, and Mr Taylor said the 19 December festival was the largest yet. “It was hard to judge, but at different times there was between 1000 and 1500 people in the main street,” he said. Residents from around the valley flocked to the town for the annual festival, clamouring to try the children’s rides, visit the animal farm or the jumping castles, take a journey on a horseand-cart and to get a photo with the man himself - Santa Claus. The entire event was run free-of-charge, and was held from 4pm to 7pm - immediately after Healesville’s primary schools finished their last day of the year. Mr Taylor said the large turnout to the event was a testament to members the organising committee who spent months labouring over details and organising attractions for the festival. And the largest sign of the event’s success was the amount of children filling the closed-off section of Nicholson Street (Maroondah Highway) to play on the rides. “The kids had a great time - there were queues at all of the rides - and everybody seemed to have a ball,” Mr Taylor said. Parents were well catered to at the event by local businesses, which opened their doors for some late night, last-minute Christmas shopping or the chance to sit and enjoy a coffee. “It was a perfect day for it, we’re thrilled with the result and look forward to doing it next year,” Mr Taylor said.

Shopping with the very best YARRA Valley residents will have access to world-class food, fun and a unique shopping environment through daylight savings when the Chirnside Park Shopping Centre Twilight Market begins. The markets, which will run during daylight savings from January-April, will feature live music, kids’ activities, local craft stores and the best of Melbourne’s famous food trucks. Visitors will be spoiled for choice, with Hammer and Tong, White Guy Cooks Thai, Smokin’ Barneys, Nuoc Mama and Pierogi Pierogi all rolling into the centre to cook unique dishes that combine Yarra Valley produce with inner-city dining. A pizza-making workshop will also be held at the markets, meaning residents can get creative and then take home their hand-made dinner. A major drawcard for the markets will be a blow-up cinema playing family favourites. All of the kids’ activities and entertainment - including the cinema - will be free. Stalls will be staffed by friendly local faces, with local produce, gifts and homewares on offer through the market period. Chirnside Park’s Centre Manager Ryan Ling said the market would have the best of both innercity Melbourne and the Yarra Valley. “We wanted to create an event that celebrated our local community and gave customers a new and exciting experience without travelling into town,” he said. “We’re so proud to bring this event to the community.” Chirnside Park Shopping Centre has over 110 specialty stores in ranges such as fashion and
homewares, and has the largest variety of major and discount department stores in the area. The first Chirnside Park Twilight Market will be held on Thursday 22 January from 5-9pm in the car park near Reading Cinemas in Chirnside, and entry is free.

WITH a new year upon us, let’s look back at some of the big movies released during the holiday season. Exodus: Gods And Kings is 2014’s lesser biblical adaptation. Exodus has stunning visual design and solid action yet unmemorable performances, thinly-written characters and a rushed, jittery plot. It’s ultimately more cohesive but much less impactful than Noah. The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies is a mixed bag (much like the entire Hobbit

But Nightcrawler brings home the gold. Jake Gyllenhaal delivers a chilling career-best performance as an ambitious psychopath entering the news footage business. A riveting, darkly comical character study with a flawless escalation of tension and depravity, imagine There Will Be Blood if Daniel Plainview were a news cameraman instead of an oil baron. Now that we’re done with the past, let’s look to the future - 2015 looks like it will be an insanely cool year for blockbusters, and I can’t wait!
trilogy). Yes, it’s bloated and very poorly paced, and the battles become monotonous, but it has truly great character moments between Bilbo (the title Hobbit) and the greedy dwarf king Thorin. Now, Big Hero 6 is something special. Not only is it very funny and full of endearing, well-written characters, inventive action scenes and wonderfully expressive animation, it also doesn’t tiptoe around emotion. With a story of surprising pathos and sincerity, this film gives its young viewers full credit on what they can process.

Artists make a confession By KATH GANNAWAY AN EXHIBITION of paintings by Felice Cipriani and Neil McLeod that opened at Burrinja in Upwey late last year is an exceptional collaboration of two unique talents. The Confessional Box is a collection of new, abstract, collaborative paintings by Cipriani and McLeod, artists recognised as two of the real innovators in the world art scene. The men have collaborated for the first time in a series of hand-painted photographs,
1149893-EG33-14
drawings and paintings. Mr McLeod has used and evolved a unique technique in photography and in this exhibition Mr Cipriani, an Italianborn artist, has used his amazing skills to paint over Mr McLeod’s images, resulting in amazing beauty. Many of the artworks will be shown in China during 2015 starting at Guan Shan Yue Art Museum in Shenzhen and followed by shows at Guangzhou University, then to Chongqing and Beijing. During 2016 the exhibition will move to Russia.
Mr McLeod said there is a serious side to the comedians in them. “We have admiration for creativity at all levels and a profound dignity for artists worldwide,” he said as the works were hung ahead of the opening last week. Yarra Ranges residents, and visitors, have a premier opportunity to view the works of these two acclaimed artists over December and January. The Confessional Box is at Jambi Gallery, Burrinja in Upwey until 18 January.

Power plays as finals loom YVCA WITH CHRISTMAS dinner packed away, the men in white hit the pitch across the Yarra Valley for the first time in 2015 with their eyes firmly fixed on finding form at the right time of the season with finals action only a mere five rounds away. The weather man had predicted an extended break with forecasts of torrential rain, but the skies cleared for a full days play for everyone concerned. Round nine of D.J. Strachan Shield offered a tantalising trio of matches, as the top four teams battled it out against each other in key one-day clashes which will shape the rest of the season. Seville hosted the emerging Woori Yallock, with keen eyes on maintaining their position as association powerhouse. The Blues batted first and after some early wobbles against the pace of Jackson Wright (3/33) and the swing of Daniel Mock (2/38), the experienced pair of Tim Dwyer (51) and Ryan Akers (41) guided the home side to a competitive total of 6/155 off their allotted overs. The total was a chase the Tigers would’ve been confident of chasing down and making a statement to the rest of the competition. Captain Daniel Mock (52) made the most of the early going, but he lacked the support from the rest of the batting order as Dean Troyhan (4/33) and Matt Hadlum (2/17) took wickets consistently to keep the home side on the front foot. With Mock’s eventual dismissal, the last hope of the Tigers’ resistance, the innings petered out and wrapped up for 121, some 35 runs short of their target. With the win securing their position at the top of the ladder, Seville will use their round 10 clash against Yarra Junction as an opportunity to put another upstart to the sword and dispel any thought they’re not top dog. Meanwhile, Woori Yallock must make short work of a struggling Hoddles Creek if they are to keep the chasing pack at bay. The other top-four clash was held at Yarra Junction as the Eagles hosted Warburton-Millgrove, with the home side viewing the game as an opportunity to consolidate their position in the top four, while closing the gap on the top couple of teams. The visitors batted first and battled to build their innings as they continually lost wickets to the probing bowling of the Eagles, particularly to the consistent slow bowling of Cam Spaulding (4/39). With the Burras on the ropes, the Eagles let the big fish off the hook, as the master finisher, Mick Walker (39 not out) made the most of an early dropped catch to guide his side to a competitive total of 8/151. The Eagles had their destiny in their own hands, and made short work of the early going as influential knocks from Quinton Hodgkinson (40), Stephen Flutter (39), and Cam Spaulding (22), had the Eagles well in front in the chase. As has been a recurring nightmare for teams across the Valley, if batsmen ‘in’ can’t capitalise on their starts, then it can leave the remainder of the batting line-ups in risk of collapsing, and the Burras seized on their opportunity. After cracking the Eagles’ top order, the visitors ripped through the middle order, at one stage capturing 6/10 in a devastating collapse. In the end, the chase and the Burras attack became too overwhelming for the remainder of the Yarra Junction batsmen and they found themselves 16 runs short of the winning target. After relinquishing their top four position, Yarra Junction must bounce back in a tough match up against Seville, whie Warburton-Mill-
grove will view their clash against Healesville at home as a great opportunity to put a deposit on a top two finish. In the final game of the round, Mount Evelyn capitalised on Yarra Junction’s slip up by displacing them in the top four after accounting for a dogged Hoddles Creek at home. The visitors got out of the blocks in quick rate and raced to 0/60 in the 15th over of the innings. Sensing the innings slipping from them, the Rovers reverted to some tight bowling, and as a result were rewarded with three quick wickets. One constant at the top of the Wombats’ order was Jeremy Derix (52), and despite losing the quick wickets Derix teamed with Cam Bell to put the visitors back in a position to attack a large total, at 3/100. Under-bowled for most of the season, young left-arm offspinner Jed Thompson posed questions of the remaining Hoddles Creek batsmen, and he capitalised on their attacking press to capture an impressive 4/14. With the help of skipper Kane Jones (2/27), the pair ripped through the remainder of the order to close the innings swiftly for 103. Mount Evelyn have wobbled with their batting this season, and the Wombats were keen to put some early pressure on the home side. Despite some probing bowling, they were unable to effect a collapse of significance despite capturing regular wickets. In the end, the Rovers cruised to a relatively easy six-wicket victory, on the back of a solid 38 not out from young gun Gareth Fraser. Hoddles Creek captain Mick Batten (3/22) did his best to keep things interesting, but it was all too little, too late. With the top four starting to get out of reach, Hoddles Creek will rely on their pride to extract the most out of the rest of their season. They ran Woori Yallock close in their previous encounter, and they will be confident of giving it a shake next week. Having regained a position in the top four, Mount Evelyn now has a week off courtesy of the bye, to look forward to a tough run home in the quest to rejoin finals action. D.J. Harry’s Open adventure - again By KATH GANNAWAY HARRY Rothwell will have plenty to talk about after a return performance in the 2015 Australian Open. The 15-year-old tennis enthusiast had a ball as a ballkid last year in the event, which attracts some of the world’s best tennis players. Getting a second gig is a great accolade for Harry who has overcome some significant challenges in the past few years, including selective mutism, to participate in football and tennis. Up until the age of 11 Harry didn’t speak to anyone but his parents Jo and Bryce. Selective Mutism in children is a complex disorder characterised by an inability to speak in certain situations. Harry says the disorder held him back when he was younger, but is proud of his achievement in overcoming it. He has been playing tennis
for seven years with Warburton Tennis Club and while he says he can’t see himself playing at elite level, he loves playing for fun with his friends, and has a few premiership flags under his belt. While playing football had its challenges, the strategy he developed with team-mates has had benefits on court at the Australian Open. “Being a ballkid requires lots of signals on the court, which I’m quite good at,” he said. Harry said the experience last year, when he got the Girls’ Final and a match between Thomas Burdich and Kevin Anderson prompted him to apply again this year. “You get really close to the players which was great and meeting a lot of new kids is a good experience,” he said. Harry was chosen from more than 2500 hopefuls for the 380 strong squad that includes
kids from around Australia and the Asia-Pacific. They will be following in the footsteps of the likes of Roger Federer, Pat Rafter and Lleyton Hewitt who were ballkids before they joined the professional ranks as players. Australian Open Ballkid Squad manager Tania Hall said the role of the ballkids is vital. “They provide quality service to international athletes and use their co-ordination, agility and balance to ensure the play runs effectively and smoothly,” she said. Harry has been in training and says he is looking forward to getting on court. His advice to others who would like to be ballkids - whatever their personal challenges is to just go for it. “Have a go and see where you get to,” he said. “If you do get in, it’s a really good experience, and if you don’t, just try again.”

Riding high after Cup win By KATH GANNAWAY THE winning smile said it all as veteran jockey Debbie Waymouth accepted the Healesville Cup on Saturday. Ms Waymouth rode the perfect race on a soft track with four-year-old Tearaway Tommy leading all the way to come home with a convincing win ahead of Royal Mail and Vertigo to pay $4.25. The horse is owned by Ms Waymouth and daughter and trainer Rebecca Waymouth. The race went to Tommy’s plan according to Ms Waymouth, who has been riding as an amateur jockey for more than 40 years. “Tommy always leads; you can’t hold him up, he just goes out and does his own thing and he led all the way,” she said. The win was a crowd pleaser and there’s no doubt a big part of that was admiration and respect for Ms Waymouth who is among the determined and talented group who paved the way for women jockeys in a fiercely defended male-dominated sport. With her father and two brothers successful players in the industry, she says it was in her blood to ride - and to ride competitively.

Keegan Horn from Coldstream and Jade Davey from Ferntree Gully checked in with the TAC breathalyser team Phillip 132907 Georgiou and Natasha Barnett - just to be sure! She got her permit when she was 17. “You weren’t allowed to be paid back then. Women were not professional jockeys until around 25 years ago and they were only allowed to ride in one race per meeting called the ladies’ bracelet,” Ms Waymouth said. “And, you weren’t allowed to ride against the men.” The thrill of riding and a training regime that would test jockeys half her age keeps her in the saddle. “I ride between two and 14 horses each morning and certainly don’t feel 59,” she told the Mail. “I think I’m riding as good
as I was 20 years ago. “I love the horses, the thrill of it and the achievements. There’s no better feeling than to ride a winner, and to see the horses like Tommy, who was a bit wayward, progress and come through as he has is a great feeling.” Winning the Healesville Cup was one of those thrills. “The Cup is the biggest race on a club’s calendar and we were rapt to win the Healesville Cup today,” she said. The next race meetings at Healesville are on 31 January and 28 March, and, on past performance, it will be worth keeping an eye out for the Waymouth stable entries.
