Cashed-up cruisers sailing in By PAUL MILLAR CASHED-UP tourists from America and Europe will cruise into Corio Bay next month on one of the most-highly rated liners in the world. Oceania Cruises confirmed to the Independent that the five-star rated Marina would arrive in the bay on 15 February and that the cruiser was sold out. The push to bring more cruise ships into the port is gaining momentum with the Seabourn Odyssey listed for a return visit on Tuesday and again a month later. The Marina, on its maiden voyage to Geelong, is a major coup for tourism operators as the fully-booked ship will be only two days into a 32-night cruise when it sails into Corio Bay. The luxury cruise ship will carry 1250 passengers and 800 crew while the Seabourn Odyssey has 450 passengers and 330 crew members. Communications director Craig Owens said Oceania was always considering alternative destinations. “Our port operations area is very keen to try new ports and Geelong was an easy decision for us to make and the officers and the crew are excited to be going there, he said. The ship will anchor in the bay and passengers will be taken by tender to the Royal Geelong Yacht Club, with tours arranged along the coast and in the city. Passengers will be ferried to winery tours on the Bellarine Peninsula with the visitors encouraged to buy locally and sample the produce with
their meals when back aboard the liner, described as one of the most sophisticated and elegant ships to debut in the past 50 years. “We offer luxury cruising without the pretention, Mr Owens said. There was no pretention from Geelong Mayor Darryn Lyons about the economic impact the visit would have on the region. “The average annual income of Americans that travel on boutique cruise ships is just under $1million, he said. “This is a growth industry, more ships are being built every year and more people are going on cruises. It’s the biggest growth area in tourism and I am working very hard to get more cruise lines coming here. Securing the visit by the Marina added weight to his push for a dedicated cruise ship pier, he said. Regional tourism boss Roger Grant echoed the mayor’s sentiments. “Clearly these sorts of ships bring in high-spending visitors, he said. However, he said, a dedicated cruise terminal would see ships commit to more than an overnight stay and that is where the big money came into play. Fuelling ships, loading supplies and having visitors stay longer had to be the target, he said “You cannot achieve that unless you have a dedicated cruise pier here. We have a great opportunity here, let’s take a deep breath, forget about the politics and let’s do it, he said.

Power flower proves an attention-grabber GEELONG Flower Farm wanted a standout sign that showed where it was and what it was selling. Local engineering contractor Daniel McDonnell met the challenge, letting his artistic side blossom by producing an eye-catching display on the
Bellarine Highway. “They wanted a different kind of landmark and that’s what we gave them, the Steel Alive metal master said. Flower farm owner Glen Butteriss said not a day passed where somebody
did not comment on the creation, planted on site just before Christmas. “The locals say it is amazing and it’s blown them away and it works for us. People from outside Geelong were always asking where we were, now it’s easy to tell them, Mr Butteriss said. LUXURY: An aerial view of the Marina. GTX Modern Engine 15W40 SKU OA00388

“AS slow as a wet week” took on added meaning with the region copping a bucketing with an average of 42.5 mm of rain. The precipitation fell mainly on Tuesday, but the rest of the week was still gloomy, with more rain predicted this weekend. It got so bad out on Corio Bay, the fifth race in the International 14 World Championships became a battle for survival, with even the race leaders upturned. At least the race went ahead - over at Sorrento the fourth race in the Moth World Championships was abandoned. The water must be wetter over there. PRIMARY school teacher Rebekah Fewkes is determined that heading into surgery this week won’t slow her down. The Point Lonsdale resident will undergo a mastectomy and reconstruction and just six weeks later, she will proudly join the 2015 Melbourne Walk in support of cancer research. Fewkes was diagnosed with HER-2 Positive breast cancer in August, forcing her to pull out of a marathon for which she had been training. “I decided that I had to do the walk,” she said, planning the 60km journey to span two days. She hopes the money raised from the event will give Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre the opportunity to find another breakthrough in the future. TALK about rubbing salt in the wound. Ford’s aluminum-body F-150 pickup has just picked up the North American Truck of the Year award, topping the votes of an independent, 57-member jury of US and Canadian auto writers and editors. With Ford closing down in Geelong, and Alcoa - which is producing the metal for the F-150 now gone, it’s cold cheer for a couple of thousand workers who, under different circumstances, might have been making aluminium cars here. A MELBOURNE driver must have thought he was still in the big smoke during a visit to Geelong this week. He was travelling up Gheringhap Street in the left lane and put on his left indicator but then did a right turn into McKillop Street, Melbourne hook turn style. Maybe he was just an old timer who remembered when we still had trams in our city.

Alcoa clean-up jobs go By PAUL MILLAR A MOOLAP operation pinning its hopes of survival on processing Alcoa’s landfill will close its doors next month. Alreco, employing up to 25 workers, would have been guaranteed several years of work if it secured the right to process three landfills. Sources said the company could have doubled or tripled its workforce if it had been given the opportunity to process the hazardous materials containing aluminium salt slag and spent potline materials. MHM Metals, of which Alreco is a subsidiary, has revealed that the
“landfill will remain in situ” even though the Environment Protection Authority has yet to make determinations about cleaning up the massive Point Henry site. Alreco will close its doors on February 13. Iain Kirkwood, chairman of MHM Metals, said in a stock exchange announcement: “We wanted to secure the future of the Moolap operation by processing the Alcoa landfill. “However this opportunity did not materialise and we are very disappointed for all stakeholders, especially our plant employees at Moolap, who will likely have to look for alternative employment in
the New Year.” Keeping Alreco’s plant at Moolap open relied solely on processing Alcoa’s landfill, however, the AGM was told that the landfill ‘’would remain in situ”. A spokeswoman for the EPA said clean-up work at the site has not started through the use of any regulatory tools at this stage. “The first stage in which the authority manages such clean-ups, is to obtain documentation of what is known about the site and the associated risks, with the intention to then move onto developing formal and well managed clean-up plans,” she said. The EPA issued Alcoa with a
draft clean up notice last December in which it proposed requirements to assess the site and develop a plan detailing actions to clean up waste and contaminated soil, sediment, surface water and groundwater from the smelter site. Alcoa has until 19 January to provide comments on the draft notice to the authority before a final notice is issued to ensure the agreed works are completed. Environment minister and member for Bellarine, Lisa Neville, said the job losses were disappointing and she would be contacting Regional Development Victoria to see if it could tap into the expertise of the processing company in any other way.
From pen to palette, artistic expression embraced By NOEL MURPHY ANYONE not sleeping under a rock will have noticed the soaring boost in artwork around Geelong. Street art in particular has been booming with inner-city lanes and old industrial precincts, once the preferred canvas of graffiti scribbles and daubs, ceding way to more sophisticated works. Body art has moved into overdrive as well and for artists like Geelong’s Anna Mathieson the whole renaissance is a welcome phenomenon that’s broadening the scope and opportunity for artistic endeavour. “Street art in the late ‘90s was lot of graf, some of it was amazing, but it’s really good to see art in buildings reflecting history, like Aboriginal portraits -- it looks so good,” she told the Independent this week. The 27-year-old, self-taught practitioner has spent her recent years travelling Australia, fruit-picking and singing across the north and dabbling with her art along the way. Striking images such as intricately-detailed pointillist acoustic and electric guitars, pen and ink images ranging from stark
to poignant and confronting, along with photographic constructs attest to a broad palette. But Mathieson’s @pocketofdolls - you’ll find her across Instagram, Tumblr and Pinterest - is evolving toward sacred linework. It’s indicative of the shifting ground artists are noticing. “My art is mainly fired by my imagination, from things that have happened in my life, but lately I’m really interested in sacred geometry,” she said. “I’ve been experimenting with it the last nine months and I’ve found a niche where I really like what I’m doing. “I preferred new dot and linework, so I’ve used a bit of that and turned to my own version. Now I do a lot of Aztec stuff and astral and geometric celestial kind of things.” While Mathieson’s doing more linework she retains a healthy catalogue of wideranging works: fairies, punks, nudes, warrior queens, portraits, tattoed ladies, pistolpacking dames and fantasy characters. Work-wise, she gets by on private commissions, mostly by word of mouth - some of it for collectors, some for commercial use including fashion brands.
In brief Hello sailors THE 2015 International 14 World Championships attracted 67 teams from Japan, Canada, Britain, America, Italy and around Australia to Royal Geelong Yacht Club. The British team of 12 boats proved hard to beat, filling the top two spots with two races to go. British and Australian crews filled the top 10 places in the seven race series finishing today.
Road deaths A GEELONG West man died after being involved in a collision at Stonehaven on Monday. Dylan Kosir, 20, died from injuries suffered in a head-on crash on the Hamilton Highway. He was the second person to die on local roads this week following the death of a Melbourne woman in a separate smash at Swan Bay also on Monday.
Asbestos alarm THREE areas in Apollo Bay have been cordoned off after the Environment Protection Authority discovered they contained asbestos. The EPA issued notices requiring ongoing containment and restricted access to the areas at the Apollo Bay Golf Club, the Apollo Bay Pony Club and an area of the foreshore next to the playground.
Taser incident A 33-YEAR-old Batesford man was tasered by police during a confrontation at Erica Avenue, Corio and charged with a series of offences following his arrest this week. The man has been charged with two counts of criminal damage, one of unlawful assault, four of assaulting police and four of resisting arrest and was bailed to face court on a date to be set.

Deakin student parks hit By NOEL MURPHY YET another furore has erupted over parking at Deakin University as students are denied full-year parking permits until April. The latest parking uproar follows last year’s student union attack on Deakin over its inability to guarantee parking spaces while charging more than $400 for annual permits. This year, staff and student residence permits will be available from 16 February and valid from 1 March but students will not be able to buy permits until 23 March and they won’t be valid until 1 April. They will be valid until February 28 next year, almost four months after end-of-year exams. But students, facing a $250 charge, will have a full month of $6 a day parking - up to $120 or half their yearly charge - to deal with in March. The two-stage permit system,
KITCHEN CAPERS: All Julie George has to show for the kitchen upgrade is paperwork. 132924 Picture: Reg Ryan
Red tape floods plans SIX HUNDRED people use it a week, 40 volunteers put in 200 hours a week, and about 1000 people make use of its food bank, but the Bellarine Living and Learning Centre at Whittington simply can’t seem to get the kitchen extension it’s been chasing for eight years. The controversial $7 million a year ward funding system that saw millions poured into neighbouring Thomson Football Club by former mayor John Mitchell could never seem to find the cash. Now that a modest $150,000 has finally been apportioned for the job, about half what’s actually needed, red tape about a 100-year flood risk has put the job on hold again. Centre chief Julie George is more than a little frustrated at the latest obstacle. “It’s absolutely bizarre, it’s like an episode of Utopia,” she told the Independent.
“We just want a five-metre extension out the back of the building and a storeroom next to it. “We thought we were ready to go but the Corangamite Catchment Management Authority has ruled we have to either reduce the size of the extensions by one metre right across the back, making the storeroom not much more than a corridor, or elevate the back half of the storeroom by 300 mm.” Ms George said the ruling had been challenged, unsuccessfully, by the City of Greater Geelong, which owns the Worden Court centre building. She said the flood ruling meant the extension would cost more again. Raising half the storeroom would also pose occupational health and safety problems for volunteers, some of whom were disabled or mature aged. Local councillor Jock Irvine, who has championed funding for the centre, said matters had been further complicated by broken funding promises from the previous
State Government. He hoped a drainage system could remedy the latest stand-off at the centre and said vital services were being undermined by the delays. “On the face of it, it seems ridiculous but I think there are ways around it, some sort of drainage set-up so the water can run away without affecting the extensions,” he said. “I’ll be pushing hard as I can in this budget so Julie and centre get as much money as they can. “I’m supportive of her throwing dirt up in air on this, we need to deal with this. Ultimately, it’s the people in Whittington and neighbouring suburbs that are missing out - that’s what’s annoyed me. “I’d love to be able to give her all the money she needs but I’ve had to fight just to get the $150,000. I’m going to fight for more and more.” Comment was unable to be obtained from the CCMA.

Real estate agents advertising in MMPH publications are also co-shareholders with financial interests via the MMPH Group equity structure. “This equity structure has proved very successful for both MMPH and agents and will continue under the new MMPH ownership,” Fairfax said in a statement. “MMPH founding real estate agent shareholders will each take 65 per cent of their consideration in Fairfax shares.”

A newspaper war broke out in 2013 between the News Ltd’s Geelong Advertiser and The Weekly Review over real estate advertising. The Weekly Review signed 25 of Geelong’s real estate agencies to become shareholders in the publication, receiving fixed dividends for set amounts of advertising spend. A legal action started by MMPH against Geelong real estate agency HayesWinckle for switching advertising to the Geelong Advertiser was later settled out of court. MMP founder Antony Catalano will continue in his role as chief executive officer of Fairfax’s Domain Group overseeing MMP. He will take all consideration due to him in Fairfax shares. Fairfax chief Greg Hywood said the group’s property business would continue its “aggressive national expansion”. “The consolidation enhances our rollout nationally of the agent equity model successfully pioneered by MMPH in Victoria.

The month-long delay was described as “just a money-grabbing exercise” targeting the most vulnerable people at the university - the “poor 18-year-old first year students” - by staff at Deakin. “As O week starts on 2 March and classes from 9 March, this means students will need to purchase hourly or daily permits for three to four weeks,” one staffer told the Independent on condition of anonymity. “We are all pretty angry over the latest increase for staff - yearly permits are now $440 after a 10 per cent increase - but we are absolutely disgusted about the changes affecting our students. Bulk bill backflip welcomed By PAUL MILLAR
HISTORIC: Ted Stephens at Francis Ormond’s grave in Eastern Cemetery. 132763
Picture: REG RYAN
Penning a Geelong colonial giant THE HILLTOP grave at East Geelong Cemetery makes for an impressive monument but 120 years after receiving its esteemed inhabitants it’s rarely visited. Ted Stephens knows well the “zealous intelligent assistance”, the “liberal donations”, of Francis Ormond who rests in peace there with his wife Mary. The road passing by, Ormond Rd, bears testament, in part – as do many other observances – to the role he played in the early development of Geelong and Victoria. The Ormonds of Borriyalloak, as Mr Stephens has dubbed his newly-published biography of Ormond, details that role, one that’s been largely forgotten in the mists of time. Captain Francis Ormond migrated from Scotland in 1842 with his wife Isabella, settling at Shelford northwest of Geelong where he ran a hotel catering for travellers in and out of the Western District. He accumulated land
in the area, as an economic depression persisted, and cashed in after the Gold Rush arrived. The family, including Francis junior, just 15 when his father settled on the Leigh River, made a fortune from their sheep holdings. The younger Francis followed his parents lead and spent a lifetime improving education facilities in Geelong and Melbourne. He built the magnificent Ormond College at Melbourne University, the Working Men’s College, now known as RMIT, paid for the start of Melbourne Conservatorium of Music – the first in the British Commonwealth – contributed generously to the Gordon Institute of Technology and served as a chieftain of the Commun na Feinne. Mr Stephens’ work is the first full biography detailing the Ormond family’s history. It’s a story of struggle against fire, flood and drought set against a backdrop of illness, heartbreak and triumph. “Ormond’s later life was fairly well documented, when he started
giving money away, but his early life around Western District, which was really busy, wasn’t,” he told the Independent. “He was worried about the men he employed who came out from the Scottish clearances without any education. They landed here and were fleeced left, right and centre by the Australians so he sat about with a candle in a hut at 17, 18, giving them some education. “It become an obsession with him. He set up a school for working men, a university with the most ingenious constitution; now it’s RMIT, it’s gone ahead leaps and bounds. He was an incredible bloke, way ahead of his time. “His father was a phenomenal man, too, who set him up for the future. His father was the only man at Shelford in the 1840s. When the rural industry collapsed, he took on a couple of sheep runs and struck gold when sheep prices jumped from 20 pence to three pounds and 10.”
on Monday, January 19”. “It is a victory for common sense and an appropriate change of heart,” Dr Kennedy told the Independent. He also applauded the undersiege new health minister for confirming that she would now be involved in wide ranging consultation “on the ground with doctors and the community across the country in order to come up with clear options to deliver appropriate Medicare reforms”. “It’s good that she is now going back and speaking to the appropriate stakeholders,” Dr Kennedy said. Prior to the capitulation, the doctor expressed his concern that patients who needed continued treatment for ailments like leg ulcers were likely to be hardest hit by the controversial
Medicare cuts. Dr Kennedy said that it would definitely have made a difference and would have had an immediate impact if it had gone ahead. “The impact on some patients would have been substantial,” he said. Patients who needed frequent wound management or wound dressing or quick blood tests would have been hit hard. Under the proposed changes doctors would receive $20.10 less for consultations lasting between six and 10 minutes, a cost the Australian Medical Association said would have caused many doctors to pass it on to patients. Dr Kennedy said he always felt that the proposed changes would have been overturned by the Senate when Parliament resumes next month.
Geelong con victims lose $1000s By PAUL MILLAR TRAVELLING con-men, who target the elderly and most vulnerable in the community, struck at least 14 times in the Geelong region last year, fleecing victims of thousands of dollars. Consumer Affairs Victoria has warned that summer is a peak time for scammers, often targeting owners of properties with storm damaged roofs. Last year persuasive shysters conned almost $18,000 from victims in the greater Geelong region. Much of the work involved
promises of bitumen driveway laying and tree-lopping. The Minister for Consumer Affairs, Jane Garrett, says many victims were left traumatised by the heavy-handed tactics. A common tactic was to demand cash up front, leaving householders out of pocket when the con-man did a runner. Another trick was to claim the deal was “only available today”. “Con-men are lurking around storm damaged suburbs and pressuring vulnerable people to hand over cash. It’s disgraceful,” the minister said. “These heartless con-men are
in the government’s sights. The game is up. “Never pay cash up front for a promised job. People have the law on their side when they refuse demands. “If you think there’s a problem, report tradesmen who don’t seem legitimate.” Consumer Affairs Victoria is working with police and other agencies, to stop the con-men often speaking with Irish accents. A new television, radio and print campaign will inform people of the tricks con men use. The travelling Con Men Hotline is 1300 133 408.

THE HEAD of one of Geelong’s major medical centres believes an embarrassing back-flip by the Federal Government on Medicare reforms was a win for common sense. Mark Kennedy, the medical director of Northern Bay Health, said practices would have struggled to continue to bulk bill under the “disappointing” measures initially touted by the Federal Government. From Monday, the rebate for appointments lasting under 10 minutes was to be cut by around $20, from $37.05 to $16.95. However, following fierce opposition, Health Minister Sussan Ley said yesterday that “consultation items will be taken off the table and will not commence

WHEN a men’s store is named Blue Suede, it’s impossible to just drive past. So while I was in Highton I had to pop in. It’s not always easy thinking of gifts for the guys at this time of year, but I spotted lots of accessories and great items in here. From the coolest looking shoes in a variety of colours to others which were a definite conversation starter if you were to get stuck. Actually come to think of it, I began to wish they were in women’s as well, because some of the Chelsea-style ankle boots could only be described as ‘gorge’, especially the suede ones. So I decided to focus on gifts, because let’s face it, shoes are a hard one as a gift, as he would really need to try them on. Just let him know for future reference where he can check out some great shoes. Whether he’s a golfer or not, I found this funky looking pen set made to look like mini golf clubs, beautifully presented in a black box for $24. They would definitely induce a smile on the receivers face and be of good use too. I spotted what could only be described as a melting clock for $29, so quirky it would look great on a kitchen or office shelf. Ties are always a good, traditional pressie choice; you can’t have enough if he wears them daily. I saw some lovely red and blue ones for $29 while the retro style bow tie – quite an in look if you keep some of the rest of the outfit in theme – was just $29.95. Why not throw in a colourful quality pair of $18 socks too? They look great when he sits down and you get to see a hint of his fun side through his patterned socks.

By JENA MARINO SWEARING and good health don’t generally go well together, but the Belmont Lions Sports Club players have made an exception. Their swearing and cursing has paid dividends for Barwon Health Foundation. The players were put to the test and told to give up their naughty words or else contribute to the club swear bucket. It was one test Barwon Health
Foundation was glad they failed - it has tipped an extra $665 into the organisation. The man behind the idea, head trainer Gonzalo Bruna, said that it was a “culture shock” when players were told that they would be fined for swearing. “Some of the players found it difficult,” he said, describing the practice to be “quite acceptable” in the sporting community. The Belmont Lions swear bucket was introduced for the first time last season.

Fundraising: hospital swears by it “I thought it would be fantastic for a sports club to get involved to raise money,” he said after working with an AFL club which had a similar idea. He hoped that it will be a lifelong tradition at the club, promising it would be back this season. “I would like it to be a legacy,” he said. Belmont Lions president Scott Fort and Mr Bruna this week handed over the bucket’s contents to Barwon Health Foundation.

Selfies next as debate gets absurd I SEE that Allan Barron has become the topic of letters to the editor, which makes a great change of climate. Might Mr Barron be posting selfies soon, to match his celebrity status? Heather D’Cruz Geelong West THE CLIMATE change denialism presented in recent letters to the Independent has reached new levels of absurdity. In their efforts to deny warming due to increased atmospheric CO2 Alan Barron and Lindsay Brown extraordinarily attempt to deny the greenhouse effect itself. Known since the time of Arrhenius (late 19th century), the greenhouse effect is why
we have a planet that is warm rather than freezing. The effect comes from the fact that CO2 in the atmosphere is transparent to incoming solar radiation but absorbed by the outgoing infrared radiation subsequently emitted. It is taught at senior school level and at undergraduate level throughout the world. It is actually as basic and incontestable as any science can be. The greenhouse effect only requires trace levels of CO2 (originally .028% and now .04%) which our denialists feel couldn’t possibly cause warming. It can and it does. They also perpetuate the water vapour misinformation which comes straight out of the climate denier song book.
Neighbourly IT IS my sad experience in the 21st century that most people could not give a continental about their neighbours. No longer do the types of close (personal) relationships between neighbours 50 years ago apply. Selfishness and self-centredness reigns supreme. Bugger anyone else – even if such an attitude can work to your own disadvantage. A measure of the truth of this statement is that a short time ago a ‘popular’ woman who lived in the same house for more than 45 years passed away and the first her loving neighbours knew of it was the arrival of the police and an ambulance to pick up her rapidly deteriorating remains. There was, by report, a small truckload of mail in and around her mail box, surely evidence of a potential problem. What ye sow, so shall ye reap. Michael J Gamble Belmont
Soft soap THE RATHER bizarre findings of the Local Government Inspectorate report into the council ward funding rort is, on face value, a little hard to take. How can it be that councillors, who were officials of local sporting clubs, were not in conflict of interest, when they obviously had continuing association and conversation with those sporting clubs? The initial reports allude to lack of openness and accountability, but the latter have never been hallmarks of council, and never will be, so to allude to any such thing is a manifest waste of breath. The fact that the funding was buried under a mountain of other council material is proof enough of what a nefarious scheme this was, and proof also that some of these people have no right to a place on council. The report seems to soft-soap the blame and guilt rather than doing what seems necessary and sacking the whole sorry lot of them. Gary Oraniuk Geelong West
Question of degrees SINCE 1910, Australia’s annual average daily temperatures have risen by 0.75 and an overnight minimum by 1.1 degrees Celsius. Since the 1950s, each decade has been warmer than the previous one and sea surface temperatures
The fact is that water vapour is what is known as a positive feedback multiplier, but multiplies from the base set by CO2. Everything comes back to CO2. The denier contributors to this paper are so fundamentally flawed that it is quite reasonable to request that their letters not be published. Having taught in the environmental sciences for many years and formerly head of sustainability at the Gordon, I cannot let such denialism pass as a reasonable commentary on present climate science. There is a planet to be saved. The situation is extremely serious and it is no time to be confused. Dr Ray Black Belmont
around Australia have been increasing faster than the global average. Both natural and human influence have affected climate over the past century. But it is extremely likely that human influence has been the dominant cause of the observed warming since the mid-20th century. Source: CSIRO, Australian Bureau of Meteorology. Racist holiday AS AUSTRALIA Day approaches, it is a good time to reflect on the fact that Australia is one of the most racist countries in the world and the only country that has an active policy of apartheid. Indigenous Australians have lived on the continent of Australia for well over 50,000 years. We nonindigenous Australians have been here for a little over 200 years, yet we treat indigenous Australians as outcasts. When the British invaded Australia on 26 January 1788, indigenous Australians were seen as sub-human and an ad-hoc system of apartheid was established. Although indigenous Australians were officially recognised as human and Australian citizens in 1967, they are still the victims of apartheid in Australia today. Apartheid was enacted by the Howard Government in 2007 with the support of the Rudd ALP opposition. The government used the army to invade remote indigenous communities in the Northern Territory to force them to give up the leases to their communal lands and accept, what is, in effect, martial law by suspending the Racial Discrimination Act in the Northern Territory. This abuse of the basic human rights of indigenous Australians was part of a fight-back by the mining industry against land right claims that they believed were restricting their profit-making activities. So this Australia Day instead of waving a (British) Union Jack, wave the true (indigenous) Australian flag to let the politicians know that you are not happy about living with apartheid. She will return to the studio this year to release a new album. “Singing doesn’t have the same sorts of boundaries as life does,” she said. “People love music.” Eurogliders will play the Sunday stage at this year’s Geelong’s Motor City Music Festival.
Although there will be four members as opposed to six, the band will reintroduce old songs with a light feel. But Knight assured audiences the sound would still be “festival-esque” and get people up and dancing to the groove.

FROM singing on the high seas to sell-out crowds all around the world, star of 80s pop band Eurogliders, Grace Knight is still rocking the spotlight 35 years on. With bookings piling up until the end of the year for both Knight’s solo act and Eurogliders, things are looking bright, including the upcoming release of the group’s new album Don’t Eat The Daisies in early March. Singing became a “stepping stone” and a means to travel the world as Knight landed her first gig working on decommissioned cruise ships in Dubai after being discovered at a national singing competition in the UK. “I didn’t have two pennies to rub together,” she said. She travelled from Southampton, England to Fremantle, Perth criss-crossing many countries such as Sri Lanka, Malta and also Gibraltar. Eurogliders became a musical sensation as the young group of six travelled the world. Often compared to Fleetwood Mac, the band saw tracks like Heaven (Must Be There) and Can’t Wait to See You as well as its album Absolutely topping Aussie charts in 1985. “Touring was absolutely crazy,” she said. “We were living the dream.” Memorable performances included an MTV New Year’s Eve Party televised to 65 million people as well as performing to royals like Princess Diana and luminaries including Bill and Hilary Clinton. On screen, Knight appeared on ABC’s hit TV series, Come in Spinner, which she said was one of the highlights of her career. Other appearances included a recent role on Neighbours. Knight’s jazz solo act has attracted ARIA award nominations, with hit Stormy Weather placing num-

THE BIG TOP is the perfect way to describe Cirque du Soleil, the Canadian-based outfit that’s rewritten the rules on circus shows with its staggering colour, choreography and athleticism. Neelanthi Vadivel, artistic director of the latest Cirque franchise to hit Australia, Totem, is right in the thick of this remarkable troupe overseeing a multitude of tasks that seems a little mind-boggling in its own right. She ensures costumes, lighting, set design, sound design, music and choreography are all at peak standard. She revs up the cast – many of them first-order elite athletes – helps their acrobatic evolution and integrates new ideas while all the time ensuring the show adheres to its original concept. Vadivel says Totem, playing at Melbourne’s Flemington Racecourse from January 21, is an evolution-themed vehicle to display the superlative skills of Cirque’s performers. True to Cirque form, it’s all delivered in wildly kaleidoscopic fashion. “Man’s journey is such a huge story with so many different facets,” she told the Independent.
HARD TO TOP: Cirque de Soleil’s Neelanthi Vadivel. “The nice thing about (Totem creator) Robert LePlage’s vision is he didn’t want to represent just vision of animals, etc. It could have been linear but instead you get these momentary
vignettes that are very colourful and emblematic.” Vadivel has performed in Cirque du Soleil’s Dralion, where she was posted as dance captain then artistic director with Saltimbanco. She headed up Michael Jackson THE IMMORTAL World Tour, before taking on Totem. “You’re dealing with people of so many different levels – exOlympic athletes transitioning to the role of artists, then wellseasoned artists who might have performing since they were five years old in traditional circuses or theatres. Geelong Olympian Trudy McIntosh, for six years a star with Cirque du Soleil, recently told the Independent of swapping the vaults and rings of gymnastics for the exquisite glamour of its world-touring Alegria. “You wouldn’t think you can beat the Olympics and the Comi monwealth Games, you can’t, but with Cirque, after shows you see people crying,“ she said. i “We’d open them to a new world, let them forget their worries of life for a bit. “To see that every night was really rewarding. I trained 37i hours a week as a gymnast, it was really hard. This is the reward, doing what I love and making people happy is an absolute bonus.”

TOO much to eat over the Christmas break? All that fine food can take its toll and it’s hardly surprising the post-festive period is regularly filled with good intentions. Bell Park’s Le Thai Chef restaurant has hit on the perfect recipe for fine diners keen to keep their waistline in check while still enjoying the best of exotic cuisine. Owner Theo Avgoulis says seafood and salads are just the answer – and with tantalising new sauces, a terrific temptation. In short, light and delicious food. “We feed everyone so well with meats and protein and alcohol over Christmas,” he says. “Our concept is that in the new year, in the summer, it’s time to

bunch of fanastic new sauces to complement and enhance our seafood and salads.” It’s all about summer and freshness. As Theo says, “exciting things”. To complement matters even more temptingly, Le Thai Chef has a new line of export wines in stock to match its summer dishes. “We have a variety of reds, whites and sparkling brut all under the Le Thai Chef label,” says Theo. “They’re all export quality and sourced from southern New South Wales and the Clare and Barossa valleys in South Australia and very competitively priced. “They’re Australian wines and the perfect complement for these summer dishes.”

TWO LOCAL dancers and friends have given Geelong’s dance scene a fresh feel with the opening of Geelong’s only all hip hop dance school, BC Beatz. Cat Yee and Megan Blyszak opened BC Beatz in 2013 after having taught in Geelong and the surrounding region for the past 10 years. BC Beatz has experienced overwhelming success since opening, with classes ranging from casual, fun and relaxed to its specialty - competitive hip hop crews. BC Beatz primary, secondary and senior crews contested state and national competitions in 2013 and 2014, claiming a number of medals and titles. Cat and Megs attribute the success of BC Beatz to their love of dance and music, the enjoyment and accomplishments of their students, demonstrated in every class, and their commitment to providing quality classes for an affordable price. BC Beatz classes start for students from four years of age to open or adult.

GEELONG Ballet Centre is entering a new era of dance tuition in brand new purpose built studios in Geelong West. Sisters Natalie Horman and Stephanie Gainey seek to train young dancers to their fullest potential and share with them the passion, energy and joy of dance that they themselves first experienced at the ballet centre when they started dancing there aged three and four. Geelong Ballet Centre is Geelong’s longest running and first established ballet school and is now entering its 47th year. “We couldn’t be prouder of GBC and the direction it is taking,” says Stephanie. “Our new studios are truly beautiful and are helping inspire our students to achieve their dreams and excel to new heights.” Geelong Ballet Centre prides itself on employing highly qualified staff providing excellent dance tuition for those wishing to pursue dance as a career and for those wishing to study recreationally. “Our school is our family and our students are our number one priority,” says Stephanie. “We are so lucky and thankful to be part of the world of dance and to be able to share this with so

Talent in Danceworks showcase DANCEWORKS Geelong had a big year in 2014, with new owner Jana Green taking the reins from Ann-Marie Corrigan. Formerly known as Tap-High Dance Studio, Jana, who worked as a teacher at the studio for four years, introduced the first ever mid-year showcase, becoming an annual event. Jana says she aims to give the students an extra opportunity to perform, build confidence and stage presence, so parents could see how their children had developed in a few short months. “Last year also saw DanceWorks Geelong senior students participate in the Essence of Hope ‘Hopeful Stars’ Showcase, raising money for the Leukaemia Foundation.

Cracking way to get kids ready STARTING school is always a major life event – for parents as well as children. Knowing kids are well and truly ready for school gives both parents and children confidence while embarking on the educational journey. Crackerjack Kids helps children make the leap to primary school by providing a head start to their education, making the transition from the early learning to primary school as smooth as possible. Crackerjack Kids’ School Readiness programs begin at the age of two and continue through to the year before children start school. Mindy Hodges of Crackerjack Kids says the small classes are ideal for pre-schoolers to explore the coming world of school in a fun environment. “It is hands-on exploration where kids play games, sing songs, make craft and explore concepts to consolidate their learning. “Activities are fun but are all designed to aid cognitive development. Mindy says mainstream kinders do a great job but just miss out on the academic side of preparing for school.
Mindy Hodges of CrackerJack Kids with Jolea Shand. “An hour a week with Crackerjack Kids fills the gap. Anything we can do to give kids an advantage is well worth it. Crackerjack Kids is at 148 West Fyans St, Newtown, phone 0400 816 105 or email contact@crackerjackkids.com.au.

Nurturing for pre-schoolers ONE WORLD recognises that children between the ages of three and five years may need the added opportunity to attend a preschool group with their peers and participate in a program catering specifically to their changing needs. Therefore, in addition to its family grouping facility, One World Children’s Centre also provides a pre-kinder program for three year-olds, and a funded four year-old kindergarten program. Attending the three year-old pre-kinder program has the added benefit of preparing your child for
the transition into the preschool year. The three year-old program ensures a child’s growing independence is fostered and their selfawareness and self-esteem nurtured. They will also be provided with developmentally appropriate activities and experiences for further challenge and will be encouraged to explore relationships with others in a supportive and safe environment. The four-year-old kindergarten year is preparation for transition to primary school so it’s im-
portant in a child’s development. As your preschool child progresses towards school age, he or she will require more challenges in experiences and more complexity in relationships to prepare for the transition to school and a lifetime of learning. In the year before your child starts primary school, One World’s highly experienced kindergarten teachers Catherine and Ann Marie, through their daily work, will help your child to prepare for this exciting and new world.

Steel’s creative touch
Qualiied Kinder Teacher
EVERY day is a challenge for the team at Steel Alive – some days they are involved in industrial plant maintenance, the next they are constructing artistic steel floral plants. Daniel McDonnell, the owner of the North Geelong engineering outfit, says the growing company could switch from steel fabrication and erection to intricate artworks without missing a beat. “People come in with an idea and we will build it for them, we will do anything for clients if they are prepared to fund the work,” he says. Decorative screens, gates, fences or showpiece attractions are becoming increasingly popular requests from clients. “We are always up for a challenge,” says Daniel. Initially the hands-on company boss wanted to be a blacksmith, so that he could be creative with his hands but the craft was dying and now he runs an operation that is the modern-day alternative. The team at Steel Alive are top-class tradesmen with a can-do attitude, which is evident in the way they have turned shipping containers into offices, coffee shops and bars.
Steel Alive has many eclectic pieces. The engineering firm offers a 24-hour on-call repair and breakdown service and five years after Daniel set it up the company has continued to expand, building on a growing reputation for high quality.

“WE MOVE stuff, it’s what we do!“ says Brad Ross of Belmont’s BDR Haulage. It doesn’t come much plainer than that but, as Brad says, his business model is all about protecting precious cargo. “I treat all my clients’ items as if they were my own,” Brad says. “I also run by the idea that they need stuff yesterday. So if I can give them quick service they’ll recommend me.” It’s an MO that’s driving the former Ford worker’s haulage business all over Australia. “I’m moving cars, boats, caravans, quad bikes, general freight, just about anything, anywhere,“ says Brad. “I came up with the idea for the business a couple of years ago. I saw a niche in the market for people buying stuff online and thought I could offer a service to pick up their online items. “I pick up cars people buy, I do breakdown stuff. The truck has allowed me to diversify into farm machinery and I’ve transported a dog-wash unit from a Melbourne freight terminal. Commercially I’m dealing with Marand Engineering and other businesses around Geelong - whatever people need moved.” BDR Haulage operates out of Belmont with several vehicles including a Nissan UD tray truck, a Landcruiser ute and car trailer. “Like our motto says... ‘We move stuff, it’s what we do!’” says Brad. Phone BDR Haulage on 0424 449 631.

WITH the inclement weather around late last week, an early decision was made by Cricket Victoria to cancel the first week of the Geelong Cricket Club’s match against Prahran, meaning the game will revert to a one day fixture tomorrow. In truth, this probably suits the Cats, as this season has shown that the shorter the version of the game, the more chance of success, as their inexperienced line up can take the game on. While finals are most likely out of the equation now, there is still plenty to play for, and the competitive juices will be flowing for the young Geelong side, so expect a good showing tomorrow. In the Geelong Cricket Association, last week’s round of one day matches was abandoned after GCA management made the extraordinary decision to cancel all turf matches on Friday evening, despite only a moderate amount of rain on Thursday and Friday. Many clubs were left frustrated when they attended their grounds and found them quite playable, resorting to playing practice matches amongst themselves. So the wash up of that is now all remaining games for this season will be two day games, and

with just four games remaining before finals, the race for a top six spot is well and truly on. The division one fixture sees some ripper games scheduled for this round with clashes between North Geelong and Murgheboluc as well as St Josephs versus Geelong City the key ones for finals calculations. Geelong City v ST JOSEPHS, SOUTH BARWON v Lara, EAST BELMONT v Leopold, NORTH GEELONG v Murgheboluc, BELL POST HILL v Grovedale, Newtown & Chilwell v GEELONG WEST In division two, the top six has broken away, as only St Albans Breakwater in seventh and Manifold Heights in eighth can hope to sneak back in. Both sides will have to get a wriggle on though, and while the Saints should account for Guild St Marys, Manifold Heights has a tough task ahead of it against Marshall.
By TONCI PRUSAC GOT HIM: Perry Stravoplous and his hard-won gummy. chasing gummy sharks over the Christmas break. Perry caught a personal best tipping the scales at 15kg. He had his work cut out form him in subduing one of the hardest fighting fish around. Over the break, Christopher O’Connell fished Hastings in 16 metres of water where he took a fantastic bag of King George whiting. Remaining on the other side of the bay, Sadik Cagdas headed out from Rhyll early last Thursday morning. After anchoring up in 12 metres of water Sadik did not have to wait long to hear his drag scream and the rod buckle over. The culprit turned out to be a trophy snapper of 8.2kg that took a liking to fresh squid. Only 10 minutes later, Sadik’s rod was again onto another snapper this time of 6kg. On the freshwater front, the Barwon River is producing redfin to 40cm for those casting soft plastics and hard body lures. Geoff Redmond put in some time
recently chasing redfin in the Barwon and has found them very consistent. Geoff had great success on Z-Man grubs in 2.5” cast hard against the snags. Lake Bullen Merri continues to fish exceptionally well for chinook salmon. Oscar Ford spent some time on the lake where he took a chinook salmon of 61cm and 1.9kg. Bait is out-fishing lures at present and those letting out a liberal berley trail achieve better results. Those looking for an option next week should consider casting a few soft plastics in the Barwon for redfin. Queens Park or Breakwater is always a good place to start looking. Just remember to keep on the move to find a school of feeding fish. Kingfish in the rip are worth a shot but just remember to stay clear of ships. fun day at its Elcho Park complex in Lara. The Separation St based Croatian Club has been a long-time supporter and sponsor of the Warriors. AHD president Paul Saric said his organisation was honoured to support the Warriors as they returned to Victoria’s top flight soccer competition. “We hope this contribution will go a long way to ensuring they stay in the top Victorian league and we hope to be sup-
porting this great club of ours for many years to come,” Saric said. Elcho Park head groundsman Rob Cosic, a former North Geelong player during its glory days in the former Victorian Premier League, was also acknowledged. Cosic has prepared the main pitch to a lush state despite being in mid-summer. The family fun day attracted a large crowd entertained by jumping castles, games, face painting, a petting zoo and soccer clinics.
TALENTED North Geelong Warriors attacking midfielder and rising local star Anthony Leban has been selected for Victoria’s elite Skilleroos squad. The up and coming 12-yearold has been offered a spot on the elite junior squad’s Under 13 team roster for 2015. Football Federal Victoria development coach Anthony Frost said the full-time program would see players training three to four times a week in Melbourne. A grade six student at Bell Park’s Holy Family Primary School, Leban has already had a massive 2014. He was the only Geelong player selected in the Victorian State Schoolboys’ team, taking part in the National Primary
Schools Carnival in Bendigo in September. He fronted up a fortnight later for the Under 13 Victorian Country state team at the FFA National Championships in Coffs Harbour. Leban was captain as well as the best and fairest winner for North Geelong’s inaugural under 12 NPL team last season. Leban’s father, Stan, is a former player and senior coach at Corio Soccer Club and has coached his son from his early years. He said the academy style program would incorporate intra and inter-state travel for selected players. Leban beat a field of over 300 trialists to nail down a spot amongst the 27 member Skilleroos squad. The Skilleroos program is

FOLLOWING a successful National Premier League season, North Geelong Warriors have landed a $50,000 sponsorship coup. The club announced the sponsorship with the Australian Croatian Association (AHD) in Bell Park just six weeks out from the start of the 2015 NPL season. The lucrative sponsorship deal was announced before a packed clubhouse at the Warriors’ family

This could well be the straw that breaks the Sharks back. Newcomb & District v TORQUAY, ST ALBANS BREAKWATER v Guild St Marys, Highton v ST PETERS, MODEWARRE v Alexander Thomson, Thomson v WAURN PONDS, Manifold Heights v MARSHALL And in division three, Shelford has emerged from the pack to claim premiership favouritism after accounting for Meredith last week. Meredith batted first and struggled to put together a competitive total, managing just 7/142 from its 45 overs. In reply, Shelford was cruising at 0/40, but a few minutes later collapsed to 4/54 after Ty Watts took 3/13. But Shane Lymer steadied the ship, making 56 not out to guide his side to an important victory. THIS past week saw some exceptional whiting captures along with some huge gummy sharks. Clifton Springs is still proving the place to be as Mitchell Powell discovered. While chasing whiting last Tuesday in nine metres of water, he frantically boated 19 whiting in quick time. Mitchell noticed that as the sun set in for the day the whiting went off the bite. Other anglers fishing Clifton Springs found good numbers of pike and pinkie snapper fishing soft plastics over the Hermsley spoil grounds but an early start is key. Just round the corner at Indented Head, anglers had no trouble in getting reasonable numbers of squid. Casting size 3 jigs amongst the reef and grass patches will produce some action and with some of the squid pushing 2kg they are great fun. St Leonards has been productive for whiting on average slightly larger than those at Clifton Springs. Pippies and tenderised squid have been the bait of choice in conjunction with a run-out tide. Anglers fishing deep off St Leonards using depth sounders to locate schools of snapper have had no trouble in boating fish to 6kg. Queenscliff has seen plenty of anglers out in the rip in search of kingfish. Only a couple of kingfish to 8kg were taken last week by anglers jigging with knife jigs, but as we move further into summer these fish should really come on the chew. Large schools of Australian salmon have been busting up at the start of the Symonds Channel. Casting soft plastics or 25 gram metal lures has been deadly in boating good numbers of them. Inside the Queenscliff Harbour, silver trevally continue to be taken by those casting soft plastics like Gulp Turtle Backworm in pumpkin green. Making the most of calm conditions offshore from the Surf Coast, Dylan Pace and Matt Aslop ventured out last Thursday on a productive trip, boating a well-conditioned mako shark of 20kg that took a chunk of fresh pike. Other anglers fishing offshore from Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads encountered good numbers of smaller kingfish to 65cm. Again trolling deep diving lures proved effective on the fish. Perry and Michael Stravoplous found themselves fishing offshore from Barwon Heads
