CHRISTMAS was a heartbreaking reminder for Jake Lyons’ family of the hole his disappearance has left in their lives. The 20-year-old Dandenong North man’s father Rick went out with friends on 25 August last year and returned to find his Scullin Street house unlocked and the gas stove on. Jake was gone and he hasn’t contacted friends or family since, or accessed his bank accounts. Police Cold Case and Missing Persons Squad officers took over the investigation on 23 December. Last November Jake’s cousin Kim joined his sister Janessa, 19, and Rick to plea for information about his whereabouts and urge him to come home. “It’s still not developing. Nothing’s coming forward,” Kim said. “We as a family aren’t any clearer. We don’t have any more information. “It’s a horrible feeling.” She said Jake’s 21st birthday was approaching and that not hearing from him on Christmas Day was heart-breaking. “It was very painful,” she said. Investigators initially discounted foul play but in December indicated Jake might have been harmed. Kim believes the scenario unlikely because he had no enemies or feuds. “I can’t see that. I think he left of his own accord,” she said. She said he was suffering from depression, “wasn’t in a good place” and had previously mentioned finding work in a rural area. Kim fears he’s taken his own life but remains optimistic that police can track him down.
“You try and get on with your normal life because you have to, but it’s hard,” she said. “We just need some sort of closure. We just need to know. “Someone knows something, I think. “Please. We’re not coping very well.” About 20 SES volunteers from four units conducted a four-hour line search at Warner Reserve on 23 December. Jake’s 2006 Holden Astra sedan was found at the Springvale park shortly after he went missing. Greater Dandenong SES unit controller Paul Daniel said police asked them to look for anything of interest and several specific items. A spokesperson from the Cold Case and Missing Person Squad said the search did not locate anything of value, nor had any useful public information been received. They said local police had covered all avenues of inquiry so the case was moved to the squad “in order to devote more resources to this investigation”. The spokesperson said there was no evidence to indicate foul play. “But it’s one theory among many that police are working with,” they said. “There is absolutely a hope of finding Jake alive and that is the scenario police hope for.” Jake is described as Caucasian, 178 centimetres tall with a medium build and straight brown hair. He was last seen wearing greencoloured jeans, a blue jumper and black runners. Police urged anyone who saw Jake to immediately call triple zero.

Light in a dark tunnel Noah, right, and Brydon were ecstatic to see the new Thomas the Tank Engine bed.
CHRISTMAS isn’t easy for the Murphys. Ever since Paula Murphy’s 20-year-old daughter, Maddy, was found dead at her Pakenham unit more than a year ago, her family hasn’t had much to celebrate. Maddy’s body was discovered on 23 October, 2013, and homicide detectives continue to investigate the death. But last month the Murphys were given the chance to smile again, thanks to the team at Melboards in Hallam. John Sanders, Max Croaker and Richard Halpin, from Melboards,
helped provide a Thomas the Tank Engine bed for Maddy’s two-yearold son, Noah - a Christmas present to cherish. Carpenter Warwick Deking and his partner Sue, good friends of the Murphys, also helped build the bed for Noah. “A close friend of the family made it. Everything was donated right down to the cushions on it,” Paula said last week. “Our friend knew how mad the boys were on Thomas anyway. In conversations he just decided this was something he wanted to do to.” Paula said the family were poised with cameras at Christmas time to capture the moment when
Noah came into his room to find the Thomas the Tank Engine bed inside. “We were all waiting there with the cameras,” she said. “Noah does this shy thing at the moment where he has this grin and walks really slowly to whatever is in front of him, but it wasn’t too long until he and Brydon were jumping on the bed. Brydon is Paula’s one-year-old son, who she now raises along with Noah. Homicide detectives are still investigating Maddy’s death following the discovery of her body on 23 October 2013. “Even after a year, there’s still so

Graffiti busters keep tags on vandals GRAFFITI vandalism in Casey has continued to rise over the past two years. And Casey Council and Victoria Police are again urging the community to report graffiti sighted in the municipality as part of an ongoing joint operation between the two institutions. City of Casey Manager Community Safety Caroline Bell said the increase could be attributed to the municipality’s growth in both infrastructure and population. “It’s (graffiti) certainly increasing in the last 12 months to two years. “We’ve seen an increase in the amount of graffiti that we are removing,” she said. “It remained fairly static for five to eight years and then it has gradually started to increase. “But we’re also seeing a significant increase in the amount of hard infrastructure that we have in the municipality - industrial areas, housing areas, fences, buildings and all of those things. “As the municipality continues to grow, obviously there’s an increasing pallet for people to be using.” Casey’s graffiti management program was started in 2002 by the council and police, and encourages residents to report sightings of graffiti to both bodies. Graffiti is reported from hotspots across the municipality including in Endeavour Hills, Narre Warren and Cranbourne. It’s understood a vandal, who has been using the same tag and has still not been caught, has clocked up to $18,000 worth of damage in Hampton Park in the last few months.
Acting Senior Sergeant Jen McKenna and Casey Manager Community Safety Caroline Bell are urging the local community to report any graffiti sightings. Police are interested in speaking to anyone that may be aware of the offender. Acting Senior Sergeant Jen McKenna said the City of Casey provided police with monthly graffiti statistics, indicating which suburbs are peaking for graffiti incidents at that current time. “That’s how we work in partnership. We discuss the tags, we work it out - sometimes it might be a one-
off tag, most likely it’s one we’re seeing over and over,” she said. “The data base is fantastic. If we apprehend someone for graffiti and it’s a specific tag, we’re not just focused on the one incident. “We have contact straight away with council, with our Community Safety Officer and we go through the data base and often - we had this shown from our last offender that was picked up - we were able to go
through the data base and find that they were responsible for numerous incidents.” For graffiti removal, call 1800 VANDAL (826 325), or email casey@ums.com.au. Anyone with any information about the incident or the identity of the robber is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www. crimestoppersvic.com.au. - LACHLAN MOORHEAD
Appeal for gym fire chase man to come forward POLICE are still searching for a man seen fleeing a fire at the abandoned Endeavour Hills Secondary College gym in November. Casey CIU detectives believe he entered the disused gym in Amalfi Drive just after 11.30pm, and fled shortly before flames engulfed the building. A female witness spot-
ted the man running from the school and then saw a second man chase after him. Police are yet to identify both men. It’s believed the alleged offender ran down an embankment on Power Road and fled across the Monash Freeway. He is described as Cau-
casian in appearance and aged in his late teens to early twenties, with dark hair. He was wearing a black jumper at the time. Police want to speak to anyone with information regarding the fire, especially the witness who chased the man away. This witness is described
as Caucasian in appearance and was wearing a black long-sleeved top, a fluoro work vest and black shorts. He is not believed to be involved in the fire. Brigades from Dandenong, Hallam, Casey, Hampton Park, Narre Warren, Frankston and Scoresby - roughly 14 trucks in total - attended the fire around
11.45pm on Thursday 20 November last year. It’s understood the blaze took an hour to bring under control and a further three hours to extinguish completely. Call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic. com.au.

CASEY police have dismissed suggestions dog thefts in the municipality have become a major problem, after media reports the area was Victoria’s top dog theft region. This week the Herald Sun reported that 102 dogs had been listed as stolen in the City of Casey in the past five years, according to data provided by Victoria Police and confirmed on Friday by the state’s new Crime Statistics Agency. But Detective Sergeant Geoff Rumble from Narre Warren police said there was no current anecdotal evidence that the theft of dogs was a “major issue” in Casey “It is our belief that the majority of the reports are that of dogs that have gone missing for whatever reason and not stolen,” he said. “Some are attributed to insecure yards not registered with council, so there’s no way of tracking the owners.” Reports also suggested that dogs were being stolen for illegal fights, but Det Sgt Rumble said this was unlikely. “There is no evidence to suggest that dogs are stolen to participate in illegal dog fights,” he said. City of Casey Manager Community Safety Caroline Bell said any “objective reporting” of dog thefts in Casey should be based on a comparative basis between stolen dogs and registered dogs, rather than “absolute numbers”. The City of Casey is the state’s largest municipality, with more than 280,000 residents and 25,589 dogs, as of 30 June last year. “Council undertakes a range of animal management services, including reuniting lost dogs with their owners and investigating and prosecuting serious dog attacks, however, the theft of dogs is a matter for the police,” Ms Bell said. “Council would like to remind residents to register their animals by 10 April each year. “While registering your dog or cat is the law, the most important benefit to many is that if their pet becomes lost, the unique registration number on their identification tags will help council reunite them with their owners.”

CASEY police are urging residents to keep their cars locked after a spate of thefts this year. It’s understood there have been 113 reported thefts from cars in Casey since 1 January. On the weekend more than 20 cars were broken into in Berwick’s Eden Rise Estate, half of which were left unlocked. Car windows were smashed open in the estate when valuables were left in clear sight, including handbags, wallets, phones and laptops.
many people thinking of Noah. Trying to help and do happy things for him,” Paula said. “It’s hard to get through these times and you don’t think things will ever get better. You don’t know if you’re ever going to see anything happy again. “So something like that was so refreshing, just to see Noah’s face. “It’s a good thing; it’s a really good thing.” Paula thanked everyone who had helped build and donate materials for the bed, including Sharon and Ian Glencross from the Paint Place in Cranbourne, and painters Noal Hunter and Eric Spokes.

I’m proud and excited to be here for you THIS year promises to be exciting for many reasons - allow me to explain why. The 20-year Revitalisation Project of central Dandenong is now 10 years in and the transformation is astonishing. We have our new Civic Centre and library, new Government Services Building, the Dandenong Market redevelopment, Drum Theatre and Lonsdale Street upgrades and we enjoyed significant business, cultural and residential growth. The preparation for the all-new Springvale library and civic centre continues. While we can do some smaller works early, the main works are planned to commence in 2017. This year the Springvale Asian Gateway Project will be completed; food and culture will be celebrated at Dandenong Market as part of the World Food Fare and about 80,000 locals and visitors will

CITY OF GREATER DANDENONG MAYOR
celebrate Lunar New Year in Springvale. We will be advocating for the removal of train level crossings, new bus routes for Keysborough South, the closure of the Lyndhurst Landfill site, gambling reform and additional financial support for our manufacturing sector. On a personal note, my election as mayor of Greater Dandenong is both an honour and a privilege.
As a Year 10 student I was elected Student Body President and learnt very quickly that the best way to be effective was to listen to and represent my fellow students. In my early twenties, I watched with interest as Bob Hawke and Paul Keating dominated the Australian political landscape. I was in awe of the way both men confidently advocated on behalf of the community and knew then it was something I wanted to aspire to do. At the age of 21, I joined the Labor Party and became actively involved. I stood as a candidate in the 1997 Glen Eira council elections, narrowly losing by two votes. The loss was devastating but gave me the additional drive and determination I needed for the next time.
In 2012, I was elected as a councillor in the City of Greater Dandenong council elections. As a councillor I’ve learnt about decision making and consultative processes. Being a councillor has given me a chance to develop my public speaking skills, social skills with people I don’t know and has given me knowledge of the area I live in. As mayor I am particularly keen to promote community pride as well as supporting ideas that will further develop Greater Dandenong as a city which is a vibrant, connected and caring place for people to live and work in. I am proud to call Greater Dandenong home and love where I live. I’m open to your feedback and ideas - feel free to send me an email on soreilly@cgd.vic.gov.au.
LOOKING BACK THE WAR 14 January 1915 Our Gallant Defenders AN OFFICER in the Devonshire Regiment in a letter to a friend in England (re-printed in the South Bourke and Mornington Journal, 14 January 1915) gives a description of the work of the Devons in holding a position against the Germans. “On the night of October 22 we advanced a bit and dug ourselves more or less in by dawn, and soon after light we saw great masses of German infantry emerge from woods and hedges some 1000 yards to our front, and advance to attack us. “We opened fire on them, and killed dozens. This was answered by the Germans with a tremendous shell fire from their heavy guns. “All day long the battle raged, and you never saw such an inferno.
“By night the place was a mass of fire, smoke, dead and dying. “All night they attacked us. Sometimes they got right up to our trenches only to be hurled back by the lads’ bayonets. “Dawn broke on 24 October with the same struggle still going on, and it continued all day and night, and all through the 25th. “We never slept a wink and by night we were absolutely done.” On another occasion an officer with two men volunteered for a piece of work. Approaching to ascertain the true position of a certain line of trenches, he says: “We were met by a hellish fire, which killed both my men. One bullet tore a hole inside my thigh about four inches long, and as deep as a pencil. It was, however, only a graze, nothing serious.
frantic parents in addition to having to search for their children.“We appeal to the public going to the beaches to pin a piece of card bearing the child’s name and address and the location and number of the family car on the child’s clothing before going on to the sand. “This will give lifesavers a chance of locating the parents without a great waste of time...” 20 years ago 23 January 1995 Red face after rescue WHO was the very quiet regular who recently fell asleep in the toilet at the local watering hole, waking later to find a very empty pub secured for the night? Police answered his timid call for rescue and when the constabulary arrived, they found a rather flushed, red-faced gent who needless to say was happy to see them.
“Another bullet went through my coat pocket. It was a hot corner. All these shots were fired not 20 yards away. "“To go on was suicide, so I crawled back into safety fearing every second would be my last, and with difficulty and in some pain I got back to the General and told him the position.” 50 years ago 20 January 1965 Lost Children a Beach Worry THE number of children lost on the beaches is causing lifesavers increasing concern. Senior Patrol Leader Claude Quist and Deputy Patrolman Kenneth Shields, who are in charge of the “Lost Children Patrol” at Aspendale, report that 16 children were lost on Saturday and 18 on Sunday. Lifesaving patrols are plagued by

Plea after crash near-miss A HALLAM grandfather has implored Casey Council to install more speed bumps in Hinrichsen Drive, after a car ploughed through his front fence on Tuesday afternoon. It’s the second time in three years that a car has crashed through Basil Harrison’s front fence in Appilla Close, a dead-end street which runs off Hinrichsen Drive. Mr Harrison was sitting on his bed using his computer tablet when he heard a “big bang”. Mr Harrison thought it was thunder but when he looked out the window he saw a car had reversed through his fence while trying to do a U-turn, around 2.45pm last Tuesday afternoon.
installation of additional “traffic calming measures” in Hinrichsen Drive, following consultation with residents “later this year”. “Council has previously identified one section of Hinrichsen Drive where design works were undertaken and a speed hump was installed on the northern approach to the intersection of Hinrichsen Drive/Keppel Drive,” Mr Ajay said. “A report on the LTM Program and review of locations for traffic calming measures was considered by the council at its meeting on 19 August. “Hinrichsen Drive has been identified as a location which warrants consideration of treatments through the Local Traffic Management (LTM) Program.”
“My grandkids had just moved from the driveway,” Mr Harrison said. “They could have been killed.” Mr Harrison said it was constantly hard to sleep at night because his street was always used as a playground for hoons. “It’s the worst road in the world,” he said. Council last year installed a speed bump in Hinrichsen Drive, near Keppel Drive, after a 100-signature petition was present to the City of Casey last year. But Mr Harrison said more were desperately needed near the turn-off to his street. City of Casey acting manager Transport Anitha Ajay said the council would “investigate” the potential
Family’s anguish after loved pet taken by horse rustlers MUCH-LOVED horse Maverick is missing after thieves snatched him from his Dandenong North paddock. His owner Brittany Jubb, 22, from Clyde and her mother Tricia from Cranbourne have been searching high and low for the 23-year-old chestnut quarter horse gelding since Wednesday 7 January. Tricia became aware of a problem that morning when she received a call from a City of Greater Dandenong ranger because a horse was found on the Monash Freeway between Heatherton and Stud roads at 6am. The thoroughbred chestnut gelding was a companion for Maverick. “The ranger and police caught it and walked back along a public bike path which backs onto our paddock,” Tricia said. “There are other paddocks in this area, but the horse started to take over and walked the ranger to an area of our fenceline that clearly had been deliberately cut. “I arrived at the paddock shortly after and discovered that my daughter’s horse was gone.” Maverick is 15.1 hands with distinctive markings - four long white socks and a white star/ strip that angled down the right side of his nose. He was branded HA with an arrow underneath the letters pointing towards his tail and has a scar on his far front hoof. “It is all very confusing as we don’t know whether they at-
Brittany Jubb on Maverick. tempted steal the other horse as well, used the other horse just to walk along with Maverick so perhaps he wouldn’t neigh, or simply knew the other horse got out when they cut the middle fence and left it out to roam,” Tricia said. “It is, however, unlikely to have wandered the distance to the freeway away from all horses in the area on its own.” Tricia discovered fresh manure leading from the paddock to Clow Street in Dandenong via a bike path. “The Clow Street exit point has an oval area with a car park so Maverick may have been loaded there,” she said. “Someone has gone to great
lengths to get our horse and he is not overly easy to catch and there were 20 horses in that paddock to choose from. “I have leased this paddock in Dandenong North for around 30 years and never had a horse stolen or known of others stolen in this area. “Britt only turned Maverick out in this paddock about eight weeks ago as there was plenty of feed there for the summer period.” Brittany has owned Maverick for about 10 years and rode him in dressage and other competitions. “He has been retired for six to seven-odd months, purely as she felt he had done enough and deserved retirement - not through injury,” Tricia said. “She loves him so much and wants to give him the retirement he deserves.” The Jubbs have notified sale yards and contacted knackeries. “Someone must know this horse’s whereabouts or will see him somewhere in the coming weeks,” Tricia said. Dandenong police Sergeant Ally Howard said horse thefts were rare in the area. “This is something unusual,” she said. “I expect someone would have seen something. “I urge them to contact Crime Stoppers.” Call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or contact Brittany Jubb on 0431 737 580 or through www.facebook.com/ maverickstolenhorse.

Bridge brand THE Bridge has unveiled new branding for three services that are supporting people with disabilities in the south-east. Assistant Social Services Minister Mitch Fifield launched The Bridge Works, The Bridge Connects and The Bridge Employment on 15 December at a special event at supported employment service The Bridge Works in Dandenong. The Bridge, formerly known as Options Victoria, has been operating for more than 40 years and provides employment and community services to people with disability throughout the region. The Bridge Works is a supported employment service in Dandenong with more than 40 staff with a disability that provides warehousing and logistics. The Bridge Connects includes day support, respite, social and leisure activities and The Bridge Employment provides job placement and

The film showed a day in Jono’s life, his passion for his job, his independence in travelling, working and friendships, and his love of reading the weather report on a local radio station. The celebration concluded with Mr Fifield and supported employee Giuseppe di Benedetto unveiling plaques for the three new service names on stage. “Today we’re here to celebrate the good things about The Bridge Works, and the benefits of supported employment to the people involved,” The Bridge CEO Phillip Toovey said. “The Bridge Works supports and employs nearly 50 people, so we’re a small part of this industry, but when it is comes to the workers, it certainly is all about quality - and when it comes to quality of services to business, it’s the same thing quality work.” Visit www.thebridgeinc.org. au for more information.
Rail line plans remain uncertain THE State Government says it is still considering whether it is bound by its predecessor’s $2 billion-plus private deal to upgrade the Dandenong rail corridor. An Andrews Government spokeswoman last month said it was still “receiving advice“ on the arrangement. Greens leader Greg Barber called on the government to reveal the proposal. “I don’t believe contracts

have been signed but the rail operator (Metro Trains) put a proposal to the government,” Mr Barber said. “With Metro, I suspect it’s as much about property development and speculation as it is about running more trains.” Last year, the Napthine Government announced it had entered “exclusive negotiations” with a private consortium, including rail operator Metro Trains, for 25 new trains, high-
capacity signalling and the removal of at least four level crossings. The recently-deposed government had been hoping to finalise an agreement by late in the year subject to “a positive value for money outcome”. Prior to the state election, the previous government refused to release details of the public private partnership nor confirm if contracts had even been signed.

VAL Clarkson is searching for an old flame who lived at 39 Hemming Street in Dandenong. He met Norma Johnston in 1960 when she was 17 and he was about 20. “I lived at Harrisfield at the time. I used to take her out a fair bit and we just sort of parted ways,” he said. “I’d like to catch up with her.” Do you know Norma? Email journal@starnewsgroup.com.au or call 5945 0611.
A DANDENONG man made an unlikely mate at a Princes Highway bus stop – a redback spider. Jonathon Weston said the arachnid had been hiding out in the shelter and would pop out whenever he visited. GREATER Dandenong SES volunteers will use coming community events to seek funds to buy a new vehicle. The crew is holding a raffle with a $5000 travel voucher prize until the end of April to raise funds. Spot them at a festival around the municipality or call the unit on 9684 6651 to help. THE Journal was thrilled to hear that a former Dandenong resident who now calls Queensland home misses reading about his old stomping ground. He lived in the area for almost 60 years and doesn’t have a computer to access our e-paper, so his grandson plans to subscribe to the hard copy so it will arrive in his mailbox each week. BANGHOLME now boasts access to one of the world’s fastest mobile networks, Telstra said last week. It switched on the 4GX network in the suburb, increasing typical mobile download speeds up to 100Mbps for customers with compatible devices.
A FIRE truck needed rescuing in Dandenong last week. It became lodged in the Princes Highway fire station's front door when the crew was leaving for a training drill on Sunday 11 January. Experts figured out how to remove it from the badly damaged door on Monday. A fire brigade member told the Journal that the circumstances surrounding the incident were being investigated.

Man of action By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS INSPECTOR Bruce Kitchen was looking for an “exciting and secure” job when he joined the police force. On both scores, the vocation has not disappointed. Inspector Kitchen, who oversees the Greater Dandenong police service area, was recently awarded for 35 years’ service mainly in Melbourne’s south-east. His enthusiasm hasn’t dimmed over that time. “It’s certainly not a boring job. I still find it challenging and exciting,” Inspector Kitchen said. “I still like coming in to work. I can’t remember the last time I took a sick day.” Technology has changed the job
markedly - identity card checks that once took up to 15 minutes can be done instantly on computer. Inspector Kitchen remembers typing up reports using carbon paper. He learnt the hard way that leaving halfwritten reports in typewriters was an invitation for office pranksters. “We’re also more accountable these days because of social media. “These days, everyone’s a reporter with their mobile phones. Isolating communications (such as in last month’s Sydney siege) doesn’t happen anymore.” The rise of drug-addled criminals has also changed policing methods. “Alcohol has always been an issue but the influence of drugs is more unpredictable.
“Because of that, we have to be more safety conscious. Policing is a lot harder.” Inspector Kitchen’s youth was spent in Carrum Downs and Noble Park; his family had recovered after losing everything in a house fire in Skye. In 1988, he settled with his wife and three boys in the house he built in Dandenong North. He joined the police after “a few kicks up the backside” from prominent Springvale police identity Jack Ledger left a character-forming mark. Along the way, he received wise counsel from former Chief Commissioner “Mick” Miller while working in the Russell Street communications unit. He first wanted a role in search and

Drivers on the road to travel disruption
Hooked on dress-up
MOTORISTS could encounter delays on the South Gippsland Freeway in coming weeks. VicRoads is conducting annual road resurfacing works between 9pm and 4.30am daily, except Fridays and Saturdays. Workers will lay and compact asphalt and refresh line marking to produce a smoother surface and preserve the road’s longevity, meaning less maintenance in the future. VicRoads said the work was being carried out during the warmer months to ensure the best quality finish. The South Gippsland Freeway will be closed northbound from South Gippsland Highway to Princes Highway until 21 January. From Thursday 22 to Monday 26 January, it will be closed northbound between Princes Highway and Monash Freeway. On Thursday 27 January, the South Gippsland Freeway will be closed southbound between the Monash Freeway and Princes Highway.
KIDS can become superheroes, princesses, pirates and monsters at Dandenong Market this week. Its Marvellous Makeovers and Dress-Up Craft Creations workshops will run from 10am to 2pm every market day until 25 January. Children of any age can make their own costume using capes, crown costumes, elf ears, robot buttons, monster masks, angel wings, pirate hats and more. The makeover team - award-winning face painter Sci Westwood and craft aficionado and hair stylist Tang - will help with face paint, hair chalk, flowers and crowns. The activity is free and no booking is required. It will run on Tuesday 20, Friday 23, Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 January in Market Square, Dandenong Market, corner Clow and Cleeland streets, Dandenong.

COVER STORY
INVITE TO CELEBRATE INSPIRED Homes is celebrating its 10th anniversary – and giving new homebuyers an opportunity to save $15,000 with its Celebrations package. The locally based company was started 10 years ago by managing director Andrew Stickley. He had a vision to create homes that were different in concept and performance. Each home is designed in partnership with customers to give them an unheard of level of flexibility. In fact, Andrew reports that the company has never actually built the same house twice. “Personal requirements, budgets, land sizes, shapes and orientation are all variables that should be considered for an optimal outcome,” he said. In a world where every estate seems to offer variations on a generic theme, Inspired Homes really does live up to its slogan of being “refreshingly different”.
ONLINE CREATOR Would-be buyers can explore the difference themselves by clicking onto the Inspired Homes website and exploring the Home Creator tool. It brings the Inspired concept to life and opens buyers’ minds to new possibilities. Before building, each online layout is manually adjusted or combined with different components to create a unique design.
CELEBRATIONS The 10th Birthday Sale offers $15,000 of extra value at no extra cost. It includes Contour evaporative cooling, LED downlights, an aluminium alfresco sliding door and a $6000 Colour Room voucher. Competitive pricing, house and land packages, build quality and practical layouts all make Inspired Homes excellent value. But perhaps the real secret lies in the flexibility of its modular concept.

NEW HOMES & LAND
BUILDING TO SUIT ALL STAGES OF FAMILY LIFE Local Hotondo Homes builders, Scott Phillips from Pakenham and Tim and Marg van Dam from Clyde North, build homes to cater for people at every stage of their life. With over 90 floor plans to choose from, there is sure to be the perfect home to suit. The release of 12 new home designs further cements Hotondo Homes as a builder that will build to suit any requirement and budget. Whether it’s first home buyers looking to get into the market, investors, families with young children, adult families looking to upsize or older couples looking to downsize, Hotondo Homes have it covered. The new designs include single and double-storey homes that are modern, fresh and in line with current market needs. They also cater to suit a multitude of different family needs, budgets and lifestyle requirements. “We are extremely excited to launch these new designs,” builder Scott Phillips said. “Our design team aims to design homes that incorporate the modern lifestyle. We don’t just build houses; we’re passionate about building homes that people actually want to live in.” The new Nicoll 175 design is a modest take on the family home. Its single-storey facade is made up of interesting lines and offers
everything necessary for comfortable and relaxed living. The new 18.86 square Nicoll 175 design features three bedrooms including a master bedroom with ensuite and walk-in-robe, double car garage, two bathrooms, outdoor alfresco area and open plan kitchen, dining and living room. “The Nicoll 175 design is the quintessential family abode. Its smart and practical floor plan is the outstanding feature,” Tim van Dam said. The Como 449 boasts the ultimate in luxurious and spacious living. It features all the elements of the perfect family home, but also offers areas of seclusion and privacy. It features four bedrooms with walk-in-robes and ensuites, a double car garage, downstairs outdoor alfresco area and upstairs balcony, open plan kitchen, meals and family area, two study areas, home theatre, rumpus room, four bathrooms plus a powder room and more. “The 48.37 square Como 449 design is a large and spacious family home,” Tim van Dam added. Tim and Marg van Dam build in Narre Warren as well as the surrounding areas of Berwick, Clyde, Cranbourne and the Mornington Peninsula. They specialise in building house and land packages. They also take great pride in providing
personalised, professional customer service, as well as strong attention to detail. For more information contact Tim, Marg and their team on 9708 6999 or visit their awardwinning display home at Flowerbloom Crescent in Berwick Waters Estate (Melways 131 C9), Clyde North, Victoria. You can
also view their range of services at www.hotondo.com.au. Scott Phillips builds in Pakenham and the surrounding areas of Officer, Cranbourne, wider south east Melbourne and the outer Mornington Peninsula. Scott and his team specialise in building house and land
packages, knockdown rebuild projects and challenging multiresidential and duplex projects. For more information contact Scott and his team on 5941 8855 or visit their office at 22 Bald Hill Road, Pakenham, Victoria. You can also view their range of services at www.hotondo.com.au

Homeowners planning to break out the tool box and spend the summer on DIY household improvements often think they are adding value to their home. But inferior DIY work can not only make a poor first impression, but have buyers worrying about what else has been poorly done. And DIY done well will not add value if the home is overcapitalised - that is, more spent on it than could be recouped in a sale. The popularity of DIY has increased as a result of our love affair with home improvement programs such as The Block and
House Rules. Business information analysts Ibisworld last year forecast that within five years Australians would be spending more than $60 billion a year on home renovation and maintenance. Already spending figures are close to $55 billion a year. The analysts said the hardware store sector would grow most, with projected growth of 16 per cent. Kitchens, bathrooms and outdoor areas are most commonly upgraded. A recent British survey has found that poor DIY can knock up to 11 per cent off the selling price
of a home with nine out of 10 homebuyers saying they would lower their offer if they spotted botched home improvements. Translating those figures to Victoria, that would mean up to $35,000 off the regional Victorian median house price of $324,000 and about $70,000 off the Melbourne median house price of $649,000. A key lesson is that work should be done well if it is to add value to a home. That means being sure homeowners have the skills and experience for the tasks and, if not, getting professional tradespeople to do the work.

NO SMALL writing bug has hit at Silverton Primary School. It first hit students during a term of story-writing on a “digital platform”. Then it went viral when the classes finished - the students kept writing and posting feedback for each other. Teacher Bianca Thaens said the writing contagion caught the interest of a Queensland children’s publisher Emma Mactaggart of Boogie Books. Ms Mactaggart hosted workshops with 21 budding authors from the school, offering to publish the stories on one condition - the children decide where to donate the books. The students formed the Silverton Child Writes Reality Group, choosing to tailor their
stories for Ronald McDonald House visitors - who are families of hospitalised children. “They were the greatest inspiration for the children’s writing,” Ms Thaens said. “(The students) wanted to write stories that were fun and made children happy.” It took a year of perseverance to produce the colourful, high-quality productions. Up to 20 drafts were submitted for each reworked and storyboarded tale. More details were added, a thrilling plot twist thrown in, illustrations created. “These were not written by the children you’d expect,” Ms Thaens said. “Some have had literacy struggles. For some, English is
not their first language.” The students presented their offerings to Ronald McDonald House last month, with esteemed author Andy Griffiths and Greater Dandenong’s councillor Maria Sampey in tow. As well as finding a home in Ronald McDonald House, these books will be kept at the National Library of Australia and State Library of Victoria. Now this writing bug has spread to 70 further storytellers - “even though they know how much work this means.” At the launch, Ms Thaens noticed a hooked reader, whose family uses Ronald McDonald House. “The child was so amazed. He couldn’t believe kids his own age could do this.”

Wellness full circle THE property 327 Gladstone Road North Dandenong situated on the corner of Murray Road North Dandenong has an extensive history. It was untenanted for many years and was in a state of disrepair when Dr Devika Iyer first leased it. After considerable investment Dr Iyer transformed the property to open the doors to her practice in March 1998. Business was slow initially however with the support of Dandenong Journal Newspaper, which published an editorial about the transformation of a run-down premises the practice was able to take off with a new start. Over the years, with the continued support of the community, the business flourished enabling Dr Iyer to purchase her own premises at Waverley Park Stadium. The purpose-built practice took two years to design and build.
The team at Willow Tree Wellness. 132503 Relocation of the practice required a new name of Grandstand Dental Care, appropriate for the location next to the home of the Hawthorn Football Club. “Our patients remained committed throughout and their ongoing referrals enabled the substantial growth of our business. “We now treat many local families as well as the Hawthorn footballers and staff,“ Dr Iyer said. The Gladstone Road property is the practice's second
clinic. The new practice called Willow Tree Wellness will provide patients access to multiple health professionals providing holistic care. This unique facility will provides services such as medical, dental, chiropractic, myotherapy, remedial massage and naturopathy. “We are keen to give back to the community that has embraced us over the years,” said Dr Iyer. Spirited leap for Rangers By JARROD POTTER FROM WNBL giant killers to giants in their own right, Dandenong Rangers have stormed up the WNBL ladder to take third spot after an 89-82 win over second place Bendigo Spirit. Erasing a 12-game consecutive losing streak to the Spirit, Dandenong took control of the battle early and made sure the hoodoo would be wiped clean ahead of the final phase of the regular season. Team defence was the highlight of the first half as countless Rangers threw themselves head-first in for rebounds, blocks and steals. The Rangers unit proved difficult for Bendigo to penetrate as Tegan Cunningham (8 points, 10 rebounds) continued her rich form at both ends as she thrives as a defensive powerhouse. Also flourishing whatever the situation, Alice Kunek (21 points), Penny Taylor (19 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists) and Cappie Pondexter (17 points, 8rebounds, 6 assists) flung themselves at anything airborne to show the Spirit the Rangers’ once sparse defending was long gone. Kunek then made her biggest impact on the match from longrange as she lit up the court when it counted most in the second half.
Her 17 points after half-time - including back-to-back threes through the third term - gave the Australian Opals’ representative her third match over 20 points this season with all of them happening in the current winning streak. Despite the margin blowing out to 14 points late in the match, there was life yet in Bendigo as Kelsey Griffin turned the game on its head through the fourth term. The WNBA forward shot out to a match-high 23 points and clasped seven rebounds to give Bendigo a last-ditch attempt at victory as the margin was reeled back to only four. Dandenong struggled to get on the scoreboard for nearly three minutes in the last term before tipping the tables back in their favour as Griffin was ejected from the game with five fouls. When Griffin fouled out, Dandenong regained control through the cooler heads of their experienced tandem Taylor and Pondexter to eke out the seven-point triumph to take their sixth win in a row. Mark Wright said the win was all the better for Dandenong’s ability to cover the gaping hole in their roster as starting point guard Kathleen Macleod dislocated her kneecap, requiring surgery and a three-four week stint on the sidelines. “Let’s just state that wasn’t just
a great victory, excellent to have a win against a second placed team and keep our roll going, but we did it without Kathleen Macleod,” Wright said. “That in itself is a statement about this team of how good they are as they can compensate for a player like Kathleen. “From my point of view that was the test for us - we’ve been tested game after game after game since Christmas and then this was our biggest one yet as we didn’t have our point guard who is averaging over 20 a game since the Christmas break.” From the starting five all the way down the bench, Wright was impressed with the Rangers’ resolve and knows it will be needed if the Rangers want to keep the wins coming. “They let Alice Kunek get a look and when Cappie and Penny are playing like that and we have Kath as well, Alice is going to get her looks as they can’t cover off on everyone,” Wright said. “Tegan had a great game, Pickrel was fantastic and you have to play well when you play teams like these; unless everyone plays well you can’t win.” A seventh win in a row is up for grabs as Dandenong faces Adelaide at home on Friday night from 7.30pm.

It’s a slam dunk for South Eastern Titans on the move Dandenong stadium By JARROD POTTER
TOURNAMENT mania will grip Dandenong for the next few months as basketballers from across the country descend on the Stud Road stadium. Dandenong Basketball Stadium, accommodating 15 FIBAaccredited basketball courts, will take the hosting rights for the 2015 BIG V Pre-Season Tournament as well as two major junior tournaments. Shifting from Frankston Basketball Stadium - which is currently undergoing a $13 million renovation - Dandenong will be the basketball tournament capital of
Australia for the next few months. Approaching its 25th birthday next year, the stadium is going from strength-to-strength as it also hosts the Under-20 and Ivor Burge National Championships from 22 to 28 February as well as its usual WNBL, SEABL and VJBL fixtures and the annual DandenongEltham Basketball Tournament this week from 23-26 January. Closing date for Big V PreSeason tournament entries is at 5pm on Friday 6 February. For more information on the tournament, visit the BIG V website www.bigv.com.au.
THE last 12 months have proven the best yet for Dandenong-based rugby-league team South Eastern Titans. The club recently moved to Greaves Reserve from their initial home base at Doveton’s Betula Reserve and it’s paid off in a big way for the rugby-league team. The Titans were able to expand to senior ranks with the relocation - adding a reserve grade senior men’s team in 2014 to great success - and that side has earned a spot in the Victorian Rugby League’s firstgrade competition. South Eastern Titans

president Andy Tapatuetoa said the expansion into the top grade is a fitting continuation of the great benefit of moving to Greater Dandenong. “We did have two clubs - juniors and another club just had seniors and things didn’t really go the way we wanted it to be… we wanted our boys to be together as they had started to go elsewhere,” Tapatuetoa said. The Titans now boast 15 Victorian Rugby League (VRL) teams from over-35 masters, senior men’s first grade, women’s all the way down to the juniors with membership increasing to 264 players across all age
groups. The club also expects to boost numbers as the Titans add a women’s full-contact tackle team for the first time in 2015 after the success of the VRL’s Women’s Tackle Gala Days last year. In another change to Victorian rugby league, all teams from a club will travel to a venue with juniors and seniors alike and will play consecutively on the same day, a shift that Tapatuetoa endorses wholeheartedly. “It’s great ... the great thing about the competition is that we travel as a club, so it keeps all the families together,” Tapatuetoa said.
“If you have three-orfour kids having them at different venues makes it difficult, but having that new structure of how the games are played is a great change.” The South Eastern Titans will hold their Registration Day this Saturday, 24 January between 10am-5pm at Amart Sports Dandenong, 55-67 Frankston-Dandenong Road, Dandenong with a sausage sizzle and 20 per cent off sports gear for newly registered members. For more information on the Titans, contact secretary Maria Wilson on 0415 521 978 or maria@setitans.com.

SPORT DANDENONG DISTRICT CRICKET ASSOCIATION - TURF 1 Round 8 (day 1)
Wounded Bulls spit blood By JARROD POTTER ON THE hunt for its first outright victory, Springvale South butchered Dandenong West and left nothing on the carcass. SPRINGVALE SOUTH v DANDENONG WEST CARVING up the Bulls - Springvale South (5/118dec) took the first innings points and set Dandenong West (95 and 0/20) a monumental challenge to stave off outright defeat. Ruwantha Kellepotha (6/24) came into the attack after Yoshan Kumara (2/30) and Jarrod Armitage (1/20) peppered the Bulls’ top order with bouncers and hazard-ball yorkers. Sanjeewa Udahagamadedara (21) and Matt Collett (28) showed the only significant resistance to the beguiling spin of Kellepotha - who notched his sixth five-wicket haul in Turf 1 in only two seasons. Kellepotha ran through the tail in his signature style, leaving the Bloods to flay first innings victory following a tonking session off 33 overs. Steve Masterson (26) and Dylan Quirk (19 not out) secured the win before Craig Slocombe sent Dandenong West back in for one last challenge. The Bulls would survive the final seven overs unscathed. BERWICK v PARKFIELD A ROLLER-COASTER ride at Arch Brown Reserve left Berwick (0/13) with the honours on day one as Parkfield threw it away not once, but thrice. The opening initiative
failed spectacularly as the top-order crumbled. Leaving the effort to Nilochana Perera (54) and Travis D’Souza (35), the duo notched 85 together and looked set to turn the tables on the Bears before a pre-tea collapse. Losing four wickets in quick succession - the Perera/D’Souza partnership was broken by a careless “yes-no” run-out before Brad Baptist (0), Perera and Matt Aslett (0) succumbed. It left the last battle to be fought by the Parkfield tail as Mike Willmott (31 not out) and captain Shane Bell (25) turned a sub-par tally into something fortified. Berwick is 0/13 overnight off its 10 overs. NORTH DANDENONG v BUCKLEY RIDGES RIPPED apart viciously by the North Dandenong (8/125) attack, Buckley Ridges (60) was left to pick up the pieces after conceding first innings points. Shane Neeson (4/11) and Jurgen Andersen (3/12) ensured it would only take 37 overs to smash through the Ridges’ order as Paul Rudd and returning club champion Shane D’Rozario (14) put something on the scoreboard. Backing up their aggression with the ball, the North Dandenong batting rocketed along as Alex Blake (39), Caleb Millman (30) and Shane Neeson (20 not out) kept the tempo ticking along after the toporder fell for next to nothing. Whether they declare before resumption or set a tough tally for

Buckley Ridges will dictate the Northerners chances of moving up from seventh on the DDCA Turf 1 ladder. COOMOORA v HEINZ SOUTHERN DISTRICTS REMAINING in the balance, Coomoora (142) can still escape with its inaugural win of the season as Heinz Southern Districts (5/99) lurched towards the first innings victory. Joel Robertson (36) showed the needed grit to push the Kangaroos past 100 and towards something marginally respectable as Heinz tandem Paul Stockdale (4/62) and Michael Davies (3/23) razed any batsman who crossed their path. The Cobra retaliation was comfortable before Adam Semmens (49) and Shehan Bandaranayake (22) fell to Saliya Saman (2/18) and Robertson (2/22), leaving Heinz’s lower order exposed with 43 left to attain next week. MORDIALLOC v LYNDALE JAIME Brohier (55) continued his stellar season to push Lyndale (173) into a reasonable position against Mordialloc. Brohier and captain Ciaron Connolly (28) notched 64 for the fifth wicket after Stuart Squires (4/55) and Chathura Athukorala (2/12) rampaged through the visitors’ top order. Gutsy lower-order batting from Aaron O’Dath (21) and Ricky Foulstone (21) pushed the scoreline along as Lyndale managed to bat out their overs and set 173 for the Bloodhounds.

ONE last salvo between Dandenong (172) and HawthornMonash University (8/175) would prove a fitting end to the clubs’ separate histories. With the sides merging next season, as Monash University could not ensure the field-space. This proved the final fixture in a lengthy crosstown rivalry as the Hawks won the toss and sent their soon-tobe teammates in to bat. It would be a diabolical innings from Dandenong as only the stellar effort of Sri Lankan opening batsman Kaushal Silva (68) and Peter Sweeney (43 not out) gave the visitors
something tangible to defend. The top order buckled against the Hawks’ attack as Javed Khan (5/21) steamed in to rattle Tom Donnell’s (0) pegs before finding a featheredge from Brett Forsyth (2). James Pattinson (6) scratched his way in, but Benny Howell (4/31) sent the Test international packing. The Silva/Sweeney tandem notched 60 for the fifth wicket. Sweeney was able to push the tally to 172 and give the Panthers something defendable. The Hawks struggled to knock off the tally, despite at one stage cruising with 2/100.

VSDCA - SOUTH EAST 1st XI Round 9 (Day 1)
Premier’s form on the turn By JARROD POTTER NOBLE PARK v ELSTERNWICK EARLY carnage was amended by Rob Johnston as Noble Park (194) continues to post strong tallies and make another play to creep up the VSDCA SouthEast ladder. Jake Richardson (36) had to watch on as his partners at the other end succumbed rapidly. Val Holten Medal contender Issy Perera (19) wasn’t able to add much to the tally as it fell to Johnston (69 not out) to get the job done. Johnston showed his spot in the Bulls line-up was warranted as he etched out a steadfast 157-ball half-ton to keep the Noble Park scoreboard ticking over. His contributions guided the tail as Rizan Mawzoon (20) and Jaye Edmunds (24) held on to give Johnston enough support at the non-striker’s end. A win and results falling their way could push the Bulls up to third on the ladder, to completely turn around the reigning premiers’ early form where they sat outside the top 10. ENDEAVOUR HILLS v BRIGHTON ENDEAVOUR Hills (193) virtually
matched the Bulls to set a headacheinduced chase for Brighton. Starts through the top and middle order pushed through a sizeable tally, but no one managed to convert their 20-30 into a big score to really tip the match in the Eagles’ favour. Justin Merlino (48) fared best for the home side, as he carried on the strong start from Thomas Hafil (34) and Dayle Olson (28). Brighton started to shine as wickets fell in clumps at the hands of James Harrod (4/35) and a superb 27over spell from Jack Rutter (4/92). Richard Saniga (30 not out) shored up the lower order as the veteran allrounder resisted a quick exit from the home field. Lasting all but the final three overs, the Eagles posted 193 to give Brighton something meaty to chase and can hopefully snap a threegame losing streak for Endeavour Hills. Day two of Round 9 was completed on Sunday after the Journal went to press, final scores are available on the Journal website.

Big boots to fill, eh brah! By EWAN KENNEDY UTES, such as the Holden SV6 Ute that spent time in our driveway last week, are increasingly popular with ‘the boys’ and sometimes girls as well. Many external styling changes to the VF Ute distinguish it from the VE Ute it supersedes. The new front gives it a stockier look, partly because the bonnet has been raised to incorporate pedestrian protection and follow the global General Motors latest design theme. Although it’s built on the same platform as the VE Commodore, about 60 per cent of chassis components have been either modified or replaced. The use of an aluminium bonnet has trimmed a bit off the mass of the Ute, but it’s still a large hefty vehicle. While the VF sedan has significantly different styling at the rear, the Ute and station wagon remain much the same as before. Changes to the interior are extensive and give the VF Commodore a fresh, modern look. The centrepiece is the large, easy-to-read eight-inch colour touchscreen with well-spaced controls that are big enough to
Model range Ute 3.6-litre two-door utility: $33,490 (automatic); SV6 Ute 3.6-litre two-door utility: $33,490 (manual), $35,690 (automatic); SS Ute 6.0-litre two-door utility: $39,490 (manual), $41,690 (automatic); SS-V Ute 6.0-litre two-door utility: $42,990 (manual), $45,190 (automatic); SS-V Redline Ute 6.0-litre two-door utility: $48,990 (manual), $51,190 (automatic).
avoid hitting two-buttons at the same time. Visibility outwards is still marred by the wide A-pillars that we have been complaining about since the launch of the VE Commodore. Some alterations have been made to the trim to try and cure this. Slimming the underlying metal was going to be expensive so we will have to live with the need to move our heads
about to negate the blind spots created by those big pillars. The awkward handbrake we found irritating in the VE Commodore for so many years has finally been replaced by a small electric unit in the centre console, it’s so much easier to use. The big VF Commodore Ute lopes along with a minimum of fuss and makes light of coarsechip road surfaces that can rattle even the most expensive Europeans.
It deals with corrugated dirt tracks as though they’re barely there. The phrase ‘built tough for Australia’ is an oldie but a goodie. On the open road the interior of the Commodore is noticeably quieter than before. The 3.6-litre V6 and the six-speed automatic behind it are both responsive; they communicate electronically with one another to give pleasing
amounts of torque at all times. Performance is strong, yet fuel consumption is surprisingly low for a big utility. Expect the 3.6 V6 to use about seven to nine litres per 100 kilometres when cruising in the country and about nine to 11 litres when driven sensibly in suburban areas. Handling is excellent with good feedback through the steering. The new electric power steering (EPS) unit gives a sharp feel that’s all but indistinguishable from that of the hydraulic units used in all previous Com-
modores. EPS is there primarily as a fuel saver because it only takes power from the engine when it’s needed. There’s something just right about settling into these big Holden utilities. They give a feeling of easygoing security on all roads, good, indifferent, bad, awful that’s simply not there on many imported cars. We will miss this ‘something’ when Australian designed and built car vanish from the motoring scene forever in 2017.

PORSCHE purists are still whining, but the fact of the matter is that if Porsche doesn’t do SUVs, the purists are unlikely to get machines like the 918 Spyder or Cayman GTS. Porsche’s challenge now is to continue to grow its SUV line-up while maintaining the balance between sporty and utility. It’s started from a good base, both technologically and financially - you can have either the diesel or petrol Macan S for a long way south of $100,000. The Macan’s current range starts with the $84,900 sixcylinder turbo-diesel and then the two twin-turbo petrol V6s, the 3.0 litre S and the strangelynamed 3.6 litre $122,400 Turbo. Our car was the mid-spec $86,700 petrol-powered S. Standard on board is an 11-speaker stereo with Bluetooth, USB and in-built hard disc, dual-zone climate-control, alarm with motion sensor, rearview camera and front and rear parking sensors, trailer sway control, hill descent control, electric front seats with memory, sat-nav, auto bi-xenon headlights, power mirrors, auto wipers and active ride suspension. Added to the S, and from a substantial options list, was a panoramic sunroof ($3790), full leather ($3720), sport chrono package ($2690), handsome 20-inch wheels ($2130), side skirts ($1920), brushed aluminium interior package ($1090), front heated seats ($890), triple zone climate control ($830) and black roof rails ($750). While this brings the price up to a whopping $104,510, it doesn’t make the Macan any faster because it’s all cosmetic apart from the sport chrono package. This little lot adds a stopwatch to your dashboard but also adds the Sport Plus button which brings faster, sharper shifts and throttle response. The Cayenne is a bit of a mess stylistically, and the Macan’s front end is probably a little too close to big brother’s bloated bonce. The falling roofline lands in a very cool homage to the 911, with slim LED lights and all the right angles to make the Macan look quick. Naturally, this bites into the
Model range Macan S Diesel 3.0-litre turbo-diesel five-door wagon: $84,900 (automatic); Macan S 3.0-litre V6 turbo-petrol five-door wagon: $86,700 (automatic); Macan Turbo 3.6-litre V6 turbo-petrol five-door wagon: $122,400 (automatic).
boot space and also appears to shift the rear seats a little further forward than might be ideal and renders rear leg room marginal for anyone over about five and a half feet. The front of the cabin is very Porsche, so you have to take the good with the bad. It does look terrific (good) but there seems to have been a nasty accident at a button factory (bad). There are buttons everywhere across the dash and down the console and it takes a while to learn what they all do and mean. The leather is smooth and soft, the big steering wheel is perfectly sized if a little flat in the face for some tastes and the seats are fantastically comfortable. The central console is high to give the impression you’re sitting lower than you might expect. It makes the Macan feel low and snug. The three-dial dash is very clever, with a traditional speedo and tachometer and a third screen that can be changed around to suit your needs - trip computer, sat-nav, whatever takes your fancy. A 7.8-inch screen sits in the middle of the Festival of Buttons and controls everything
from your phone and music through to sat-nav. The 11-speaker stereo is a good one, with great sound and was very easy to set up, despite the controls being shared between console and steering wheel. It uses a claimed 8.7 litres per 100km. In the real world, you’ll see low double figures fuel consumption. Drive is to all four wheels through the seven-speed transmission, with a clear bias to the rear wheels. The Macan is home to eight airbags, stability and traction control, load-limited and pretensioned seatbelts, ABS, EBS and brake force distribution. There is no ANCAP safety rating for the Macan. Straight away this feels different to your average fast SUV. It doesn’t have a lumpy ride or feel compromised through the steering. While its close relative, the Audi SQ5, is a great car, there are a few things about it that might not appeal, the ride in particular. Porsche’s active ride system irons everything out in Comfort mode, giving a firm but compliant urban ride quality while never stuttering on the fast or high-frequency stuff.
