Ships of shame Member for Noosa Glen Elmes has pledged to clean-up Noosa River if he is re-elected.

By DARRYN SMITH MEMBER for Noosa Glen Elmes says he has had enough of the unseaworthy and hazardous boats polluting Noosa River, pledging to clean up the mess if re-elected at the coming State Election. On taking a boat ride along the Noosa River it is easy to see why thousands of tourists and locals are attracted to it. However between the million dollar catamarans and runabouts, and hidden within the mangroves, rest dozens of rusted and unloved vessels. “If an LNP government is returned to office on 31 January 2015, we will provide a sum of $2 million to be drawn down progressively in co-

operation with Noosa Council, to rid the river of this difficult problem,” Mr Elmes said. Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club sailing manager Paul Blundell has been using the river for the past 11 years and says there are dozens of deserted vessels between Woods Bay and Lake Cootharaba, some of which have not moved in years. Mr Blundell said vessels in the river should have a current marine survey to ensure they were seaworthy, as unseaworthy vessels could potentially leak contaminants into the river and could come adrift under certain tidal conditions, leading to possible collisions with other vessels. According to Mr Blundell, the owners of the deserted vessels should

be held accountable for any damage to other vessels and if necessary pay for removal from the river. But Mr Elmes said the difficulty lay in finding the owner of the rotting boats. “If you do find an owner you have to convince them they need to repair it or get it off the river or if you can be assured there is no owner, we need to get it off the river,” Mr Elmes said. “The removal of hazardous vessels from Noosa River will be a slow and expensive process that needs the inclusion of local government.” Councillor Sandy Bolton said she was behind Mr Elmes’ plan to cleanup the Noosa River and felt the removal of deserted houseboats would be a fantastic outcome for the community.

Sunshine takes out second SUNSHINE Beach Surf Club has secured second place in the Surf Race Championships held at Alexandra Headlands over the weekend. Lifesavers brought their patrol skills into the competitive arena for the championships, demonstrating emergency response and life-saving techniques. The championships are an integral part of the surf sports calendar, focusing not only on the athleticism

of the lifesavers but also their knowledge and the vital skills needed to excel as a patrolling member. Lifesavers compete in three areas including patrol, first aid and the Champion Lifesaver competition. Competitors combine a theory paper with water events and beach sprints for the Champion Lifesaver, while those in the patrol and first aid competitions are given simulated rescue or accident scenarios and are

judged on their handling of them. Test scenarios included dealing with a jellyfish sting, anaphylactic reactions, lost children, swimmers and board riders in/out of the flags and snakebites. Sunshine Beach SLSC surf rescue coach Jo Redwood said in the Champion Lifesaver section of resuscitation, Sunshine Beach members’ lowest score was 37 out of 40. “An amazing achievement with

one competitor, Jonty Redwood, achieving a perfect 40 score,” she said. Team Sunshine Beach finished second overall in the branch and all 10 members who competed received a medal place, which is a great achievement for such a small club. Jonty Redwood took out gold in the Champion Lifesaver test for the Under 14 division, with Tallulah Wilson grabbing gold for the Under 15

division and Brock Redwood securing gold for the Under 17 division. In the patrol competition, the Under 15 and Under 17 teams both took home gold. These results ensure upcoming younger members of Sunshine Beach patrol are able to deal with many different first aid incidents, life-threatening emergencies and generally react to unknown situations in a calm manner.

The rescue helicopter was also on hand to assist with the simulated emergency situations.

Council fears planned reforms By JOLENE OGLE NOOSA Council fears new planning reforms will deny residents a say on development applications and sideline councils from decision-making. Proposals include the removal of public notification requirements, reductions to assessment timeframes and new scope for private entities to decide the fate of planning applications. Council voted at the last general meeting to write to the Department of State Development, Infrastructure and Planning spelling out its concerns.

“Any push by the state to appoint private entities as development assessment managers, instead of councils is a huge concern,“ Council’s Planning and Organisation Committee Chair Frank Wilkie said. “So are proposals to reduce public notification periods for impact assessable developments. If enacted, there would also be no requirement for applicants to publicly advertise impact assessable developments in local newspapers. “Both of these measures reduce the capacity of residents to become

aware of, and make submissions on, developments affecting their communities.“ Cr Tony Wellington added to the staff recommendations at council’s general committee meeting, on Monday 12 January. He said proposed changes to wording around designated community infrastructure within the legislation could allow developers to circumvent planning scheme requirements and infrastructure charges. “And while we’re on the subject of infrastructure charges, how is

it that the maximum charges prescribed by legislation remain unchanged since being introduced in 2011?” Cr Wellington said. “These are the fees that developers pay as contribution towards essential public facilities that benefit the community. The great hypocrisy here is that the State Government adds 3.5 per cent annual indexation to its own fees and charges, yet we can’t index our infrastructure charges to keep up with rising costs. “In the end, it’s the community that has to make up the difference in costs.”

Cr Wilkie said the draft reforms also sought to remove the onus on a developer to prove a public benefit for a development application that conflicts with the planning scheme. “It's important residents who appreciate Noosa’s points of difference make submissions about these reforms to the Department of State Development, Infrastructure and Planning or their local member,“ he said. The letter to the Department of State Development, Infrastructure and Planning is expected to be sent this week.

POLICE are appealing for public assistance to help locate a man who may be able to assist with inquiries into the armed robbery of a pharmacy at Twin Waters on Saturday. Around 12.15pm, a man entered the Ocean Drive business and threatened three female staff members with a knife, before demanding they hand over a quantity of drugs. After being handed the drugs, the man forced the women into the back of the store, sprayed them with liquid and left an item on the counter that was made to look like an explosive device. The man ran from the scene on foot, and was last seen heading towards a nearby golf course. Emergency services assisted the three women with medical treatment and a wash-down before they were transported to hospital for observation. Chemical and air tests were completed, which came back clean. Detective Inspector Dave Drinnen said police would like to speak to anybody who may have been at the Twin Waters Shopping Village at around lunchtime on Saturday 17 January. “We have spoken to a number of witnesses already and we’ve been able to establish that the man spent some time hanging around outside the pharmacy and a nearby doctor’s surgery before finally going in,” Detective Inspector Drinnen said. “We understand the man had been outside for at least 40 minutes prior to the incident, wearing a white protective suit and a hazmat mask. “He claimed to have been spraying for fire ants when questioned about his bizarre behaviour. “We’re asking anybody who may have seen a man acting suspiciously outside the shopping village to come forward. “Perhaps you saw this man spraying the trees and grass outside? Or maybe you noticed him getting out of a vehicle and putting on his elaborate costume? The man is described as being in his forties, Caucasian in appearance, of a slim build, with grey/brown hair and around 178cms tall.

Forces joined for arrest By JOLENE OGLE LOCAL police have been praised for their teamwork following the arrest of a Caboolture woman who allegedly punched another woman outside a Noosa nightclub in October. Police will allege at about 4am on 5 October 2014 outside a Noosa venue, the 27-year-old Caboolture

woman punched a 22-year-old woman from Alexandra Headlands in the head, knocking her to the ground and causing a gash to her eye. Police believe the attack, which was caught on CCTV, was unprovoked. The Caboolture woman was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and will appear at the Noosa Magistrates’ Court on 10

February. Noosa Heads officer in charge Senior Sergeant Steve McReight said the arrest was another example of good teamwork. Sen Sgt McReight said Noosa police released the details of the attack to the public late last year and were able to work with information received by Crime Stoppers to arrest the woman.

“It was great teamwork, with our officers working with the public and detectives to make the arrest,” he said. This is the fifth person charged with assault near a licensed venue on the Sunshine Coast in as many weeks. In a press statement, police reminded anyone involved in an assault in or near a venue they were likely

to be captured on CCTV, as well as have their identification scanned at most venues. Additionally, offenders risk having banning notices placed on them which will prevent them from attending various venues and precincts, and convictions may affect their employment prospects.

While on deployment in Noosa last week, Acting Sgt Blomkamp and Const Fitzjohn met Simon and his carer. Seeing what a positive reaction Simon had to the horses, Mounted Police officers visited him last Wednesday and this time got to meet his friend, Billy. Both boys were excited to see the Mounted Police and to get up close to the horses, with one of the Endeavour Foundation carers commenting it was a real highlight for them. Simon and Billy weren’t the only ones who thoroughly enjoyed the visit with Acting Sgt Blomkamp and Const Fitzjohn receiving invitations to come back and attend both boys’ birthdays in March.

Elmes in cash splash By JOLENE OGLE MEMBER for Noosa Glen Elmes has released his five-point plan for Noosa’s future, with plenty of cash promised if he is re-elected. Along with the clean-up of Noosa River announced on Tuesday, Mr Elmes pledged $2.5 million for the completion of the Eumundi Road upgrade to Dustin Road, with work proposed to start after the school holidays. Mr Elmes also made a “Noosa

Hospital service guarantee”, stating that if Queensland Health regained ownership of Noosa hospital in 2020, Minister for Health Lawrence Springborg had guaranteed public health facilities at the hospital from 2020 to 2030. The Noosa Tigers AFL grounds have also been promised $250,000 in funding, should Mr Elmes be re-elected, with the funds to be used for works to be decided by the club. And music to most ears was

Mr Elmes’ promise to reduce household costs and drive down the cost of living over a five-year period, with savings of up to $577 on power bills and an $80 rebate on water bills among the benefits listed. Since being elected to parliament in 2006, Mr Elmes said he was most proud of securing deamalgamation for Noosa. “The new Noosa Council, which we regained on 1 January 2014, would not have been pos-

sible without my effort to establish de-amalgamation as LNP policy and retain it as policy under four different LNP leaders,” he said. “This is the achievement I am most proud of, but it is one amongst a list which has made Noosa a better place in which our children can be educated, where community groups have been partnered to solve environmental issues, where our community assets have been improved and the estate added to.”

PUPs out to play By JOLENE OGLE PALMER'S PUPs were on show at the Palmer Coolum Resort on Tuesday, with the team gathered to pledge their support for a local international airport. Queensland party leader John Bjelke-Petersen said it was time to change the dismal employment situation on the Sunshine Coast with a stimulus injection in the form of an airport expansion. “The Sunshine Coast is experiencing a substantial lack of jobs, causing high unemployment and forcing large numbers of contractors and other workers to travel to Brisbane each day for work,” he said. Mr Bjelke-Petersen said the Palmer United Party would work with the party’s senate leader and Queensland senator, Glen Lazarus, to seek funding for the airport upgrade.

“We need an international airport to stimulate the region and create more jobs so families have a secure future,” he said. “Stimulus can be best achieved by building a new runway at Maroochydore Airport so the Sunshine Coast can attract thousands of visitors from Asia. “We must be able to offer Asian travellers the opportunity to fly direct to the Sunshine Coast.” PUP Maroochydore candidate James McDonald took a firm stance on the contentious issue of the Sekisui House development proposed for Yaroomba beach. “We don’t believe there should be a high-rise development on the beach at this location,” he said. “We want to have an environment that can be used by our children in the future.” Mr McDonald slammed the planning process, saying due pro-

INBRIEF Rates in the mail NOOSA Council rates notices are in the mail, with payment due by 20 November to qualify for a five per cent discount on the general rate. You can pay your rates by BPAY, by credit card over the phone, at any Australia Post Office, in person at council, by direct debit or online at www.noosa.qld.gov.au. Noosa Council corporate services director Michael Shave said residents were reminded that credit card payments now attracted a 0.05 per cent surcharge. “Ratepayers who do not wish to incur the surcharge can choose to pay via alternative methods such as BPAY from a savings account, or by direct debit," he said. A direct debit application form is available from council’s website at www.noosa. qld.gov.au. Ratepayers who have not received their rates notice by the end of January should contact council on 5329 6500.

Survey to find needs

The Palmer United Party Sunshine Coast candidates with Queensland leader John Bjelke-Petersen are standing for local development and local jobs. cess needs to be followed to prevent secrecy and the community should be allowed to object or protest, if they wanted to. “The planning process, the way they’ve gone about things, is just not right,” he said. If the Sekisui House development is rejected, Mr McDonald said a lack of local development wouldn’t affect the expected increase of international visitors,

with surrounding towns such as Maroochydore and Noosa set to benefit. Noosa PUP candidate Ian Woods said he believed the local government should have more say when it came to large-scale developments in local areas. “We need to strengthen local government’s power to deal with such projects,” he said.

RESIDENTS are being asked how they’d best like to stay up to date with Noosa Council news and affairs and participate in council decision-making. An online communications survey, launched this week, includes questions about the types of media residents’ access, their social media use and whether council could improve the way it currently communicates. Community engagement manager Debra Bambrook said residents’ feedback will help council better understand how the community wants to access council information. Residents who are on council’s ratepayer email database will soon receive an invitation to take part in the short, fiveminute survey. Residents who don’t receive an email can fill out the survey online via the link at http://yoursay.noosa.qld.gov.au

THE Noosa Chamber of Commerce is hoping for a big 2015 but, to make it happen, it will need the support of local business and sponsorship. Noosa Chamber of Commerce president Sarah Fisher said the group received no government funding and would need sponsorship to grow and provide seminars and community projects throughout the year. “At grassroots levels, chambers largely survive from the help of local businesses, sponsorship and volunteers,” she said. “The Noosa chamber is hoping to obtain some sponsorship dollar in 2015 in order to employ a full-time secretary.” Sarah said the chamber plans to grow membership this year through the CCIQ’s Chamber Advantage products as well as work closely with Noosa Council on the Noosa Plan, which will focus on parking, signage and other aspects of Noosa. The Noosa chamber also has plans to branch into local schools and work with students to help find employment on the coast. “Noosa chamber will be looking at ways to work with our local schools to encourage our youngsters to stay and work on the coast,” she said. “We will also work to encourage local businesses to put on apprentices and provide leaning experiences for students.” A list of educational events are planned for the coming year, with a strong focus on Small Business Week in September. “The focus will once again be on being town proud and buying locally,” she said. “Noosa survives on local investment with tourists travelling to the popular holiday destination and hopefully spending up big.

Noosa Chamber of Commerce president Sarah Fisher is calling for support from local businesses to help grow the organisation in 2015.

“The Buy Locally Saturday campaign is vitally important to the region and will once again be a focal point.” Sarah said her best advice to local businesses for 2015 is to “promote tourism heavily” both in Queensland, interstate and internationally. “Noosa has an advantage over other areas on the Sunshine Coast with its natural beauty, climate and everything on offer, but it cannot sit back on its laurels and expect people to holiday here. “Noosa must remain the number one hot spot on the tourism calendar and that means 100 per cent support from all businesses.” Members of Noosa Chamber of Commerce hope to make the organisation bigger and better in 2015 and hope a diverse range of businesses in the area will join and offer their knowledge and expertise to the group to help grow local business.

Sport gongs galore to share Benny’s

beat BENNY PIKE

I HOPE everyone has a terrific Australia Day weekend and please remember all the good things about being an Aussie. Next Friday night the Coast’s sporting talent gets together to celebrate their efforts for 2014. It was a great year at home and abroad with 26 athletes up for the major gongs. Locals scored success across the globe at world championships, Commonwealth Games and World Cups in 17 sporting disciplines. Here’s a quick rundown - eight woman, 11 national champions, 21 international representatives and six world champions. Noosa stars are well in the mix in the seniors with Cooroy’s national softball whiz Jocelyn McCallum, BelliPark cyclist Shara Gillow, Noosa clubbie Jordan Mercer, swim fish Brittany Elmslie and Coolum surfer Julian Wilson all having a great year. But they do have strong opposition in Commonwealth Games gold medallist pole vaulter and defending champion Alana Boyd, world record holder swimmer Melanie Wright and hockey queen of goals Jodie Kenny. Montville archery world champion Ryan Tyack could point his way into contention, so too four-time gold medal Pan Pacific winner paraswimmer Blake Cochrane. Oceania billiards hero Steve Donohoe won’t be behind the eight-ball and retiring Coolangatta Gold title holder Josh Minogue would love another crown on the way out. Noosa-ites in the junior section are all in with a chance - softball talent Luke Thomas, Noosa Aquatics’ Remy Fairweather, Hastings Street flyer Jordan Csabi are among the stars of the future. Again the opposition is terrific.

Jordan Mercer with dad Darren. National golf champion Shae Wools-Cobb has a great future, motorbike champs Troy Guenther and Jett Lawrence are up there with the world’s best, kayak paddlers Jy Duffy and Nick Green have Olympic inspirations, surfer Reef Heazlewood continues the Coast tradition as our latest Aussie champ and soccer player Jesse Gibbs was so good at the national titles, he is now playing for the Brisbane Roar. Caloundra’s Logan Bischoff overcame family tragedy to win the national triple jump title and stamp himself a star of the future, Nambour’s quiet achiever Daniel Campbell again stood out in the national colours playing against the Kiwi schoolboy volleyballers. Montville cyclist Daniel Fitter has come a long way after winning the national road title in Noosa to go on and win two gold medals on the world

Picture: JORDAN CULLEN stage. Cooroy’s Sue Stanley is last year’s Volunteer of the Year, Noosa lifesaver Dave Glassock is a good chance after his service over the years in three different sports. All of Noosa’s brilliant events, including the triathlon festival, May’s Sport Festival, Festival of Surfing, 7's International Rugby and Annual Pro-Am are in the running for Event of the Year. More than 400 will enjoy the success and celebrate the achievements of many, on and off the field at a function that has no peer in this state. The Sports Federation has organised and hosted the event since 1968 and will join forces in three years’ time with the state’s head sporting body QSport in 50 years of service. That I am looking forward to. Until next time.

Open Ended creator Kyle Sanderson wants to create an empowering space for local people to express themselves and come together.

Freedom is Open Ended By MEGAN WILSON FREE speech, artistic expression and political discussion will all be on the table when The J hosts the first Open Ended event on Friday 30 January, 7pm. This free monthly event is the creation of Kyle Sanderson, who wanted to create an empowering space for local people to express themselves and come together. “I believe in the potential for this idea to come alive and provide that space, fostering talent and progressive, sustainable thinking,” Kyle said. Open Ended is a social space where people can ex-

press, share or enjoy music, art and discussion, and anyone who wants to contribute to or enjoy local art and talent is welcome to come along. The event will have a setup similar to regular open mic events with a PA system, blackboard to register your performance and relaxed seating arrangements. However, Open Ended will also be open to other artistic mediums such as spoken word, performance, storytelling and discussion. “This community event will help people engage with each other and be acknowledged for what they (enjoy) doing ... while providing a great social artistic atmosphere for the whole commu-

nity to come and enjoy and be a part of,” Kyle said. The idea for this event comes from Kyle’s desire to create a greater sense of community while encouraging locals to express themselves and to support others to do the same in a relaxed setting. “A space like this will offer Noosa community the freedom to share what they love to do, or to share the experiences, ideas, knowledge and opinions they feel are important to them,” Kyle said. Open Ended is a licensed event open to all people. The first Open Ended event is on 30 January at 7pm - 11pm, The J Noosa, 60 Noosa Drive, Noosa Heads.

Green Army goes on amphibious mission TWO Green Army projects have been given the green light in the Noosa region, confirming a funding commitment that was made during the 2013 federal election, Federal Member for Wide Bay and Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss has announced. “A Green Army project, to be supervised by the Noosa and District Landcare Group, will be commencing soon along the Noosa River, within the Noosa National Park and the North Shore area,” Mr Truss said. “The project will include erosion mitigation, vegetation management and track maintenance works within the Noosa River catchment and nearby coastal dune areas. Work will be undertaken to rehabilitate vegetation, reduce the impact of river pollution and increase

species diversity through improved local habitat. “Noosa and District Landcare will supervise a second project to repair flood-damaged land and riverbank areas in the Upper Mary River Catchment. “This project will carry out work focused on landslip remediation revegetation, rubbish and debris removal and weed management. These works will improve the land condition, biodiversity and water quality in both private and public sites along the upper Mary River and its tributaries.“ Each project will provide paid work for a project supervisor and 10 young people, who can explore careers in environmental conservation, while participating in local projects to improve the natural environment.

Through projects such as this, young Australians aged 17-24 have the opportunity to gain a Certificate I or II qualification, or nationally endorsed skills. “These qualifications will help prepare young Australians for the workforce, with training provided to up to 15,000 young Australians by 2018,” Mr Truss said. “The Green Army is a key Coalition election commitment, with $525 million allocated over four years, bringing the Federal Government’s total investment in natural resource management up to $2 billion over the next four years.” Further information on the Green Army program can be found online atwww. environment.gov.au/greenarmy. 1168513-KC3-15

Rickety decision

I recently visited Noosa during the school holidays and I just loved the beautiful national park and beaches, this place is gorgeous! I’ve noticed so many baby turkeys at the end of Hastings Street - some say they’re a pest, I say they are cute!

If you’re feeling this heat like I am, then head to the far end of Noosa main beach, there are lots of shady spots to lay away the hot day!

I DO hope the council will replace the perfectly safe and well-built stairs that were used regularly by many locals at Weyba Creek. To deem them unsafe and a liability and to bully the person who built them is ludicrous and extremely unfair. To whoever was responsible at council, those stairs were an amenity. It is this sort of decision making that is against the community and more in tune with a nanny state that seem, unfortunately, to be becoming more regular. This sort of nonsense, like pressuring the barber in the industrial estate and not installing a cheap tap in the dog park for example, is exactly the opposite of the Noosa Council of old. There has been a lot happening and discussed at Weyba Creek recently. The deterioration of the banks seem foremost in any discussions. Might I suggest that the area become a no-wake-zone and highly visible signs be placed and enforced? The amount of boats speeding up and down this delicate area is ridiculous and is the main reason for the banks crumbling. I do remember Cr Frank Pardon saying council will be stabilising the area, something concrete stairs were doing, and let’s hope their “fishing platform” has somewhere to attach ropes to swing from. Libby Ferrell, Noosa Heads.

LENSCAPE Find out more about the local brushtail possum.

Remember this A big thumbs down to the man who threw his cigarette butt on the ground on Hastings Street. Help keep our streets beautiful, don’t make them dirty! Has anyone else noticed the increase of spiders now that it is summer? Eek!

To all those people who don’t indicate on a roundabout, please do - there are other people on the roads and indicating helps traffic flow better!

WE HOPE that before voting and making their decision in a candidate for the forthcoming State Election, the people of Noosa remember the failures of the previous Beattie and Bligh governments. Things the people of Noosa should take a moment to remember are our forced council amalgamation, where democracy was thrown out the window, and the terrible Traveston Dam debacle, which their federal colleagues had to rule out on environmental grounds. After 20 years in government we had the health payroll debacle and unbelievable hospital waiting times that inflicted so much pain on so many Queenslanders. The present government has substantially fixed this in just one term. Some of the ALP candidates standing for election were part of the Beattie and Bligh government who were responsible for these mistakes. If they did not see they were wrong at the time, and let them proceed, what hope do we have of a future ALP Government not repeating the same fort of mistakes? As well as council amalgamations, and Traveston Dam horrors, and failure to provide a decent health system, we had; a desalination plant that qualifies as the proverbial white elephant, a big mess in the racing industry which many people depend on for their livelihood, and insufficient priority given to vital infrastructure. The list goes on and on. Further, if elected, the ALP have announced they are going to repeal the bikie laws that are working so well and that other states are thinking of copying. Your vote is very important to the future of Queensland and future generations. Use your vote well. F. and J. Ball, Noosa.

Market forces A NEW business just starting up, Acres announced they were to do Friday evening markets. Next thing, Noosa Farmers Market chose to create Tastes of Noosaville. There are some greedy people out there. I’d like to know just who is the operator behind the Noosa Farmers Market? A few issues need clearing up here. Jenna Oakley, Noosa.

Market disappoints SO DISAPPOINTED to read the Tastes of Noosaville is cancelled for this Friday. Have heard such good reports about it but have not been able to attend due to shift work. This was to be my first, along with a group of friends. Hope the issues get resolved soon. Kate Arscott, Noosa.

Narrow-minded I MUST confess I am also confused as to why Benny Pike has been given a platform to voice

18 NOOSA TODAY | Thursday, 22 January, 2015

THIS week’s Lenscape contribution comes from Susan Tilley of Tewantin who snapped a close-up of a visiting brushtail possum. “This beautiful common brushtail possum was photographed one evening stealing bird seed from our bird feeder,“ she said. “The feeder is attached to an arm extending from our deck and this large possum was perched precariously enjoying an evening meal." Passionate about local wildlife, Ms Tilley has since done some research about the common brushtail possum which she said was the most familiar and abundant of the Australian possums. “It is a large possum with a bushy tail and pointy ears. Usually silvery grey in colour with a black band across the snout, they have a white to brownish-yellow belly. Adults can weigh around 1.5-4 kg. The combined head and body length is between 35 and 55 cm and tail length is 25-40 cm,“ she said. SEND US YOUR SNAPS: Have you got a cracking photo that you would like to see in print? Send it to newsdesk@noosatoday.net.au his narrow-minded opinions in this local paper. The last few pieces have really shown how out of touch he is. For someone who considers himself the voice of sport on the Coast, his wrap-up of the year in sport locally was a joke. The Tigers made it to the grand final, Benny, that’s not really stuttering. No mention of football, by far the most popular and highly participated sport in the shire. The Lions made the finals in a very competitive and easily the highest standard league, comparatively, of all local football codes. Not to mention the abundance of local representative youth players, both boys and girls. Yet this didn’t rate a mention from “Mr Sport”. Then, the next week, Benny really showed his class using the majority of his article to try and denigrate some locals and their opinions, which they had supposedly voiced to his face. For an ex-boxer, that was a cowardly, belowthe-belt act. Could you not have just told them what you though at the time and saved us all reading your nonsense? What a waste of space in the paper. Andy Anderson, Noosaville.

Simple solution IN REGARDS to “Blocking the Tide” (Noosa Today, 22 January), I simply do not understand the notion put by council that the only two options are: 1. Allowing the ‘flouting’ of the Noosa Planning Scheme, or 2. Re-construction of the new dwelling. The piers/pylons in question are supporting a wide two-storey verandah. Make them demolish and relocate the piers/pylons to the correct distance and all that will be affected is the width of their verandahs, which appear to be a generous four metres wide anyway. These works are relatively minor, rather than setting dangerous precedents in variations to our planning scheme. Now, if the well-known, professional builder who is building the house, has stuffed up and the owner won’t accept my proposed solution,

the owner will have to accept the inconvenience of their decision. Greg Steele, Noosa Waters.

Some error THE house in Noosa Waters in breach of the Noosa planning scheme should be made to comply. 900mm is not an inconsiderable number. Mistake? I don’t think so. One knows if you are (nearly) a metre wrong - pretty dumb builder/project manager. The council should get tough on this sort of “error”. Carolyn Smith, Sunshine Beach.

Room to move THE Taste of Noosaville markets is a good concept, but (to maximise profit?) it’s too cramped. Think about the Farmers Market run, I believe, by the same crowd - two rows with businesses on either side fills quite a wide carpark and even that gets crowded. I’ve been there two Fridays and both times it’s been uncomfortably cramped and when you buy something to eat, the general aim of the exercise I believe, there’s nowhere to sit or eat. Suggestion, if you must stay in that location, place the vendors/businesses on the outside or inside only. The local businesses have a right to not have their customers “scared off” by the throngs. Real suggestion, what about moving it to the car park spots on the river side of Gympie Terrace and two blocks long? That way people could visit the park to eat their meals, its closer to the toilets, and not crowding local business. I know it interrupts traffic along the Terrace but hell, if we do it for “out-of-towners” for their triathlon for most of a day, surely we could do it for the residents of Noosa. Ron James, Noosa. LETTERS Give us a taste I AM very disappointed that the (Tastes of Noosaville) has been cancelled. I found it was an excellent event where it brought the community together. Neighbours, friends, and tourists all gathered for a fun time. In today’s world, this is much-needed. I consider the majority of people, not the minority, should be heard. I understand some people may have complaints but am almost certain people I have been with and spoken to so enjoyed this gathering. Please bring it back as soon as possible. Karen O’Shae, Noosa.

Down with Fun Police WHY are we being governed by the minority (in this case) and the Fun Police? We have attended two of the Thomas Street events and found them well patronised and enjoyed by both locals and tourists, I know we did. It sounds like the Peregian Originals unjustified fiasco all over again. Parking and congestion is a way of life on the coast and the council should now consider no approvals for “Noosa Weekends”, street sport events, etc. That way, traders and locals have Noosa to themselves, but with negative economic benefit. Barry A. Smith, Noosa.

Prove it, Joanne PREVIOUSLY, the president of the EDV group Joanne Wright mentioned their latest phone survey confirmed the vast majority of the EDV population want a boundary change. So now Joanne, do you expect us to take your word for it or is it too much to ask you to actually publish the results of that survey? By the way, that survey was done by EMRS from Hobart and not a company from Sydney, as you mentioned previously (but it’s good to see you are totally in control of where your group’s money, or should I say “donations” are spent). That phone survey was done late in September, three months ago, and I just happened to be one of those surveyed. Only two questions were asked: Are you for or against boundary change? And, on a scale of one to five, how strongly do you feel about it? EMRA has informed me the EDV group has been in possession of the results of the survey for about three months now and I am wondering why it is taking so long to publish the results? My guess is we will never see the result of that survey and the reason is simple: It never reached that utopic target of 80 per cent they are claiming since the start of their campaign, since that farcical last June poll. Admitting their latest survey was anything less will be admitting they have been telling a lie all along. I am challenging the EDV group to publish the result of that survey now, to save whatever credibility they have got left. Dom Massoni, Verrierdale.

Some repair THE LNP keep telling us we should re-elect them so they can finish the job of repairing Queensland. In fact, they are gradually destroying the state. Analysis by Fabrizio Carmignani of Griffith University recently compared the Newman Government’s track record with the previous two Bligh governments. He concluded the “LNP government has delivered a significantly worse outcome than the two previous Labor governments”. Full-time seasonally adjusted unemployment rates increased from 5.5 per cent in March 2012 to 6.9 per cent in November 2014. The Queensland economy also experienced the second largest national decline in gross domestic income during the Newman Government’s term. Member for Noosa Glen Elmes has said the “the piper has to be paid”. Perhaps he is saying the LNP is the piper and they should therefore be paid out? G. Hamilton, Pomona.

Cash splashed TO CORRECT an error in your edition of Noosa Today (15 January), Palmer’s Salary Sacrifice, one of the reported recipients, Eumundi

RSL, has not been in existence for a number of years. The letter from Mr Palmer was returned to him. It may have been better for him to have considered the Coolum RSL, who conduct reportedly the largest Anzac Day dawn service on the coast without the benefit of government or council donations. Glenn Brown, Doonan.

Too much influence I WOULD like to support the sentiments of Bob Jarvis (Noosa Today, 15 January), I also believe the Noosa Parks Association has had too much influence on Noosa politics - the formation of Noosa Biosphere Reserve is a classic example. John Lobb, Peregian Springs.

Future focus IN REPLY to F. and J. Ball (Noosa Today, January 15), I agree we need to think hard about who we vote for, but not on issues that have passed; we must focus on the future for our young people. Youth unemployment in Noosa is currently around 20 per cent, the local TAFE has closed, community organisations that assisted disadvantaged youth have had their funding cut, the LNP is calling for cuts to penalty rates which will result in even lower incomes for young people, housing affordability is still an issue, funding has been cut to the Noosa Hospital, the list goes on and on. It’s time that we have a change in Noosa. Mark Denham, the Labor candidate has worked as a paramedic servicing the local community for over 25 years, his children and grandchildren have attended local schools and work in the area, he understands the issues that affect local residents and has committed to working for Noosa. Let’s consider the future in this election, not the past. Bronwyn Tasker, Eumundi.

Stop this dreadful government THE Great Barrier Reef is under threat by the LNP Abbott/Newman/Elmes government. If you vote for our local LNP member, Glen Elmes then you are voting for the LNP and the destruction of the reef and ruination of our society as we know it. You are also voting for the many billions being given to the rich mining companies at the expense of education, health, social services, jobs, and transport. The environment is seeing the hottest days in history as a result of man-made climate change. Today I had a paddle in Lake Weyba and the water was so hot, that fish will not be able survive if its gets any hotter - which means the pelicans will not survive nor the birds that rely on fish. Plants will not be able to survive. If it keeps getting hotter as 98 per cent of climate change scientists predict, we won’t have a planet to live on. Don’t vote for Glen Elmes and the LNP. The Labor Party is not much better, being a puppet for the big business. The only party worth voting for is the Greens. Our local candidate Joe Shlegeris is far superior to the other candidates in every way with his intelligence, university education, small business experience, compassion for people and the economy and his caring for the environment. He will create jobs without wrecking the environment. Number each vote with Liberal and Labor last and stop this dreadful government. Vote For Joe Shlegeris. Mary Brown, Noosa.

Joe Shlegeris - the only choice! JOE Shlegeris has drawn attention to various ‘mistruths’ of the current government. He points out the government document which states funding for the emergency department and the intensive care unit of Noosa hospital to cease in a few years. Elmes has responded with various empty promises just to get votes, but no firm commitment at all. Joe has also drawn attention to the grossly excessive pay packets for politicians with Abbott giving himself a raise which sees him earning more than Obama and Cameron. Joe points out the LNP is giving billions of

20 NOOSA TODAY | Thursday, 22 January, 2015

dollars in wasteful government subsidies to the mining companies and favoured industries; the enormous waste of water used in antiquated coal-fired electricity plants at the expense of drought-ridden farmers and the development of clean energy; and the selling off of government assets for pittance to their mates and then the leasing back at a horrendous cost. Joe has also made a kind offer of donating $50,000 of his salary to a community fund when he gets in. Because the LNP thinks it has a safe seat in Noosa, they can ignore our needs, hoodwink us and stop funding wherever they choose. The LNP wants to take funds away from hospitals, Medicare, the ABC and schools and social services and increase university fees to keep people uneducated and unaware of their destructive policies. The LNP has cut funding to most of the regional ABC radio stations which will be forced to close down. Some 500 jobs have already been lost in our ABC. Hundreds of jobs have been lost in sustainable energy. The LNP want to take from the poor to give to the wealthy. Take from the pensioners and disabled, as they aren’t in a position to protest. They want to take our taxes and give them to the big mining companies in fuel subsidies to destroy the Great Barrier Reef. The LNP which has Mr Elmes as their rep in our area, is set on taking from the poor and giving to their wealthy buddies. Don’t vote for this horrible government and their reps like Elmes who are happy to accept the huge pay packets and bonuses galore to pull the wool over our eyes. Both the LNP and the ALP have shown they can’t be trusted with their shallow campaign promises. The Abbott and Newman government and all their reps, have lied over and over and are bankrupting our country, selling off our assets to overseas countries and destroying our economy and environment driving us into debt and ruining the environment forever. As Joe Shlegeris pointed out, the Greens came second in the last election which shows people are starting to wake up to the rubbish we are fed on a daily basis and want people like Joe who they can trust. The Greens are the only viable option in the next election and there is a steadily rising support for the Greens. On election day, number every square and make sure you have the LNP and the ALP last on the list. Use a pen not a pencil. Vote for the best and only choice Joe Shlegeris, who will make these politicians accountable. B. Andrews, Noosa Heads.

Go Bob! FREEDOM of the press. Freedom of speech. What a great country ours is? May I congratulate you for printing Bob Jarvis’s factual letter in last week’s edition of Noosa Today. May I also congratulate Bob Jarvis for shooting it exactly how it is. Good on you Bob. Prior to Christmas I met with Michael Gloster on two separate occasions where he stated, “The NPA’s wealthy backer didn’t mind throwing a million here and there to protect our environment and will finance a scientific study of the Noosa River to bring fish stocks to abundancy levels and the growing out of oysters”. That scientific study is not only funded to $15,000, but also by the NPA’s wealthy backer to $25,000. Paid by our rate dollar through Noosa Council. Fair dinkum, you won’t scientifically study Woori Creek for $40,000. Having met with Michael Gloster on behalf of NPA, I (and Noosa’s commercial fishing families) were accused of “getting into bed with Gloster and the NPA”. To Noosa Council, may I say “It wasn’t Noosa commercial fishing families who got suckered to cough up their hard earned”. Again, congratulations to the author and to Noosa Today for exercising “freedom of the press and freedom of speech” by accepting then printing Bob’s letter, it’s what some of my forebears have fought and died for. Thankyou. Trevor Clarey, Boreen Point.

Just a little fun THE community has been deprived of a wonderful, lively market (Thomas Street Market)

by one person (e.g. Peregian Originals). People love markets and if Ralph Rogers is going to run his own market in the “Acres” in time to come, we will flock to that one too. Let us have a bit of fun around here! Heidi Schum, Noosa.

Market rage I AM absolutely furious over the cancelling of the Friday night market. Who could have complained about one of the last family nights we have had in Noosa for ages? I have been to two of the nights and enjoyed it so much, I am in my eighties and it was lovely to see so many families, dogs and all, having a great evening. I was in Thomas Street on one of the following Saturday mornings and remarked how clean it all looked after such an evening. I hope it’s only temporary. J. Murray, Noosa.

Market my words I WAS just reading the local paper when I saw the article on Tastes of Noosaville. I was not aware of this market, I am a Pomona resident, however, had I known I may have ventured out. I find it totally unreasonable that the council would cancel such an event on so many because of two complaints? Not sure why our council would bow down to a couple of individuals or business owners as suggested in the article. I would like to know what the relationship is there? If this story is as it reads then I am extremely disappointed in Noosa Council and would like to remind them they are employed by the people for the people. C. Haslett, Pomona.

Cruel attack THE cruel and unprovoked attack by Benny Pike on the injured cricket captain, Michael Clarke made sickening reading. What a headline for this dreadful article “Time for Clarke to walk”! This for a magnificent sportsman who is a real ambassador for Australia worldwide. He has always played his heart out for Australia and in recent matches has led from the front with some superb batting and team leadership. Yes! Mr Pike, armchair critic and all sports expert, Clarke has injured his hamstring and incurred this crippling blow while leading and playing for his country. He has indeed reached the ripe old age of 33 and to infer that this is too old to play world class cricket after all he has done for Australia shows complete and insensitive ignorance. On the very eve of Australia Day this article is a shocking insult. May Clarke make a full recovery to continue his fine career. A career to be proudly remembered long after Mr Pike’s ignorant, cruel, and confused ramblings in your columns are thankfully lost forever in our waste bins! R.Smith, Peregian Springs.

Fast, furious HAVING read Jonathon Howard’s “Fast and Furious Election” story, the following became clear. Firstly, given that Joe Shlegeris will not have the parliamentary numbers to implement his four main election commitments in the unlikely event he is elected to the Queensland parliament, a vote for the Greens will be a blatantly wasted vote. Second, given Mark Denham failed to outline how a Labor Government would fund his proposed improvements, upgrades and expansions, along with the steps it would take to return the budget to surplus, a vote for Labor will simply mean a return to the type of economic mismanagement we experienced under the Beattie/Bligh governments. Third, given the present LNP government is making progress, no matter how painful, in turning around the economic mess left by its Labor predecessors, a vote for Glen Elmes would help ensure the election of an LNP government (with or without Campbell Newman) to complete that thankless but essential task in the long-term interests of all Queenslanders. E.J. Ask, Boreen Point.

The competition called for mock expressions of interest to build mediumdensity residential developments in two precincts in post-earthquake devastated Christchurch, New Zealand. Cate MacMillan of Buddina and Matt Paterson of Little Mountain teamed up during the final semester of their Property Economics and Development degrees last year to submit a development proposal. The team flew to Malaysia last Sunday to present their proposal in the final against teams from the Queensland University of Technology and the University of Malaya. Matt, 32, did his degree part time over five years while working full time. His first job in property was as an assistant property manager for BWS and Woolworths after working his way up from stacking shelves and working the cash register. “I was always interested in property, but I have to give credit to my manager at Woolworths who actually offered me a promotion on the proviso that I start studying a property economics degree,” he said. “I started with Stockland last April and am now working as a development professional

Opportunity for reform onthehome

front WITH EMILY BLACK LITTLE FISH MEDIA

WITH an election scheduled for 31 January, Queensland’s property industry bodies are using the opportunity to call for reforms. Master Builders has identified many priorities for the next government that they advised would make a demonstrable difference to the state’s building and construction industry. Master Builders’ deputy executive director Paul Bidwell said the building industry was the cornerstone of Queensland’s economy, being the number one employer of fulltime workers and contributor to gross state product. Mr Bidwell said while there was no doubt the industry was positive about the future, following an improvement in conditions over the past year, the news was not all positive and further policy reform was needed to support continued growth. “The residential sector in the southeast corner is particularly strong, however, central Queensland and Mackay and Whitsunday, which have relied heavily on the resources sector, are still languishing and the

commercial sector also continues to struggle with the lack of demand,” he said. “We have seen positive policy changes on a range of fronts in recent times that have assisted the building indoor right across the state. “However ... more needs to be done to build on the reforms of the past two years and continue the good work to bolster the industry.” Master Builders has called on all parties to commit to initiatives that would chart a course for growth in the building and construction industry. Among a long list of recommendations, Master Builders will urge the new state government to increase government infrastructure investment and reduce new housing stamp duty and ensure environmental and energy requirement benefits exceed the cost. The Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) has called on the complete abolition of stamp duty to promote growth in the residential property sector. REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella said the state needed a broad legislative program to create a stronger industry, and while the state’s lawmakers showed commitment to reform through the Property Occupations Act introduction in 2014, more needed to be done.

“Queensland’s residential real estate sector is in recovery mode and it’s important to build on this momentum,” she said. “Real estate is crucial to the Queensland economy, contributing more than $8 billion towards Queensland’s gross state product and supporting almost 50,000 jobs throughout the state.” The REIQ’s proposed property transaction stamp duty abolition; reinstatement of first

home owner grants for existing housing and an allowance for first homebuyers to access their superannuation to purchase a property. Ms Mercorella said the abolition of inefficient property taxes, along with incentives to generate more transactions and turnover, would pave the way for further growth in the industry. Until next time, happy home hunting!

Some hot tips for a killer kitchen bydesign WITH DI HENSHALL THERE are many apartment buildings in the Noosa area that are well over 10 years old. Kitchens tend to show their age after this length of time and it is the one area that, if done well, can completely transform an apartment and break the carbon-dating that is so easy to pick with older buildings. Many older style kitchens in holiday-let apartments are the standard, old-fashioned U-shape, with cupboards plastered around the perimeter and all the walls much too much storage and bulk for a kitchen that does not need to be utilised like a suburban kitchen.

Before

These kitchens are clumsy and basically useless if you want to have fun on holidays. They can be full of useless items, like four saucepans and six mixing bowls and soup ladles - most things we don’t actually need on holiday. What we do need - and want in a holiday apartment is sense of fun and a sense of letting go of the daily grind that most of us have at home. A holiday kitchen should be designed to suit a whole lot of people milling around, helping to toss salads, slice crusty bread and open bottles of wine. We don’t want to make meat and three veg, stuck in a U-shaped kitchen with cupboards everywhere. When kitchens are re-designed, there is a tendency to follow the same layout as the old one. This doesn’t have to be the case. Even if the concern is matching up floor tiles, the kitchen layout can change completely. If flooring is the issue, with clever design, new flooring can be laid in such a way

After that it complements the existing, but defines the new kitchen space. Changing the layout of the kitchen can free up your approach to what the kitchen is going to be used for - it is probably used more as a bar, refreshment centre

Holiday apartments do not need huge food storage capacity, but they do need good refrigeration, breakfast bar room, easily

Lighten the mood - make it look more like a bar in a restaurant, use clever, indirect lighting, change the work surfaces from one run to

another, such as timber on non-wet areas, stainless steel on others. This approach to re-designing apartment kitchens will have a big impact on how the rest of the apartment works and how it is received by guests.

Herron steps up to lead builders MASTER Builders welcomes a new president, Nick Herron, following years of active contribution and representation of the state building and construction industry. Nick, managing director of Herron Coorey Building Contractors, will lead a new-look executive team that is largely made up of new members who will lead Master Builders into a time of renewal and growth for the building industry. Nick has been a Master Builders

member since 1995, has served on the construction sector and contracts committees since 2001, been a state councillor since 2004 and has been a Master Builders foundation board member since 2013. Nick, along with the entire executive team and Master Builders senior leadership team, will be instrumental in driving Master Builders’ official policy and advocacy platform in 2015. The agenda in 2015 focuses on six key areas, including stimulating

demand for new construction; providing housing at affordable price points that contain building costs; reducing the limits that industrial relations places on productivity; winding back the highly prescriptive approach to health and safety; improving the capacity of contractors to better manage construction risk; and providing relevant training to the industry. Nick replaces out-going president Derek Pingel, who finished up five terms as president.

Sniper hits the target By JONATHON HOWARD ONE of the most talked about movies in 2015 is American Sniper, opening at BCC Noosa Cinemas this week. The film stars Bradley Cooper, Sienna Miller and Kyle Gallner and was the brainchild of actor turned director Clint Eastwood. United State Navy SEAL Chris Kyle (played by Cooper) takes his sole mission, to protect his comrades, to heart and becomes one of the most lethal snipers in American history. His pinpoint accuracy not only saves countless lives but also makes him a prime target of insurgents. Despite grave danger and his struggle to be a good husband and father to his family back in the States, Kyle serves four tours of duty in Iraq.

The real American Sniper Chris Kyle is played by Bradley Cooper. However, when he finally returns home, he finds that he cannot leave the war behind. The film delves into the personal life and struggle of an outstanding solider who wrestles with post traumatic stress disorder and civilian life. The film has received rave reviews with on-

IF the performance photo with this column looks a little blurry, you should have been around 25 years ago, when these guys first started rocking Noosa - everything was blurry! Along with the great Barry Charles, Doc Span and Ross Williams were the live soundtrack of Noosa in the early ’90s, fun-loving dudes who could light up a room with their infectious brand of Chicago blues and down and dirty rock and roll. They brought the house down when they played at my 40th birthday party at Palmers (now Berardo’s) a year or two back. Or perhaps it was 1991. I can’t remember. I have a disease called CRAFT. Then when we started a magazine called Noosa Tatler (soon changed to Noosa Blue when the cease and desist letter came) we had a party to launch every issue and Doc and Ross usually played for our pie-eyed advertisers. Eumundi Lager used to take the back page ad and pay us in beer. Ah, those were the days. So it was old home week when Doc and Ross rocked Cafe Le Monde last Sunday afternoon, and there were a lot of familiar old party pigs in the audience loving it. Even Sean the Prestidigitator made an appearance, minus the tux. Of course neither Doc nor Ross has been idle these many years, playing together and separately at gigs and blues fests all over the country, including last year’s Noosa Jazz Festival, as well as producing a prodigious output of recordings. And when not playing, Ross teaches jazz guitar at the Queensland Conservatorium. When I first met them, Doc and Ross had just started playing together, following Doc’s arrival in Australia after many years of eventful travel. Born in Hoboken, New Jersey, like Frank Sinatra, Doc got his musical start playing the accordion in his grandmother’s saloon. In the ’60s he made Chicago his home and learned the harmonica at blues clubs like the Checkerboard Lounge and Ma Bea’s on the west side, while working as a paramedic at the notorious Cook County Jail. After a stint in the US Navy, he formed his own band, Two Fisted Blues, and made Santa Fe (New Mexico) his base for touring the Rockies to Alaska, playing hundreds of gigs at Rocky Mountain ski resorts. While they have each followed different musical paths, the sheer enjoyment these two great bluesmen take in playing together would be worth the admission ticket alone, if they charged admission at Cafe Le Monde, which they don’t. If you’ve been washing your hair for the last 25 years and have failed to catch up with Doc and Ross, do yourselves a favour (as old mate Molly is wont to say) and catch their next Sunday sesh at Le Monde, coming up 1 March. China goes surf crazy The name might not mean much to you, but in Hainan Island, China, Tie Zhuang is a household name, being the Chinese national longboard champion. I’ve been in contact with TZ (as he’s known) over the past few weeks, and he emailed excitedly this week to tell me he’d been granted a visa to represent his country at the Cricks Noosa Festival of Surfing. We’re excited too, because although the Taiwanese have become regulars in Noosa, this is our first representative of the People’s Republic. China is a young surfing nation but it has gained a lot of favourable publicity in recent years with international pro tour events being held there. Australia’s Harley Ingleby just picked up his second world longboard title there late last year, and is looking forward to renewing competition with TZ. Meanwhile, in last week’s Samsung Galaxy Hainan Pro on the women’s world qualifying tour, a 12-year-old cutie named Keying Dong became the first Chinese surfer to enter a QS event. Dong was one of the event wildcards and was unfortunately eliminated in her first heat ... but with this style, she’ll be back.

Expresso just the shot

WE’RE not eating enough fruit and vegetables, according to the latest findings from Roy Morgan Research. The survey found only two per cent of the Australia population aged over 14 ate two serves of fruit and five serves of vegetables each day, despite this being the minimum daily fruit-and-veg intake recommended by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC). The data also found that in those who didn’t eat enough fruit and vegetables, daily serves vary dramatically depending on factors such as age, gender and socio-economic status. Vegetables are where most Australians fall short with more than 60 per cent of the population eating just two or less serves each day, and only six per cent eating five or more serves. Women tend to eat more servings than men, and Australians aged 50 and over are generally more likely than their younger counterparts to eat three or more serves each day. But even though people aged 65 and over are the most zealous vegie-eaters, a mere eight per cent of them eat the recommended five serves each day. People from the lowest socio-economic quintile (FG) also tend to eat fewer daily serves of vegetables, being less likely than the average Australian to eat more than a serve and more than twice as likely to eat no vegetables per day. In contrast to their insufficient vegetable intake, Australians do much better at eating more than enough fruit. Thirty-three percent of women and 28 per cent of men eat their recommended two serves of fruit each day, and 18 per cent of men and 20 per cent of women eat more than that. Roy Morgan Research group account director Angela Smith said the NMHRC’s message of two fruit and five veg every day has been widely promoted but very few Australians manage to eat enough. “Compared with the ease of eating two pieces of fruit a day, eating five serves of vegetables isn’t always so straightforward,” she said. “Coming up with and preparing creative, tasty vegie-centric meals takes time - all that chopping! It’s a far cry from Australia’s longstanding meat-and-two-veg culinary tradition (although our increasingly multicultural population is changing this). “Overall, young married parents are among the least likely segments of the population to get their ‘two-and-five’, which is cause for concern, as it suggests that their kids are probably missing out too.”

Pip said it was with thanks to his dedicated and friendly team of staff

that Music at Noosa has been able to grow and succeed since openeing its doors. The fully qualified team include Tim, Jeff and Mel who are available to help with all musical needs. KEEPING kids active from a young age can have numerous health benefits later in life, leading to a more happy and healthy lifestyle as an adult. But, as children get older, they can become unmotivated and uninterested in sports and activities. Family website Kidshealth.org lists an increase in demands from school, feelings of not being good at sport, a lack of active role models and busy working families as some of the reasons children will lose interest in sports or activities. Kidshealth.org said there are three three key tips for keeping a child motivated. First, it’s important to choose the right activity for the child’s age, if not, the child may become bored and frustrated with the sport. Kidshealth.org also suggests offering children plenty of opportunities to be active, for example, provide equipment or take children to playgrounds and other active spots such as the beach. Last, but certainly not least, Kidshealth.org said it is all about keeping it fun. Choosing a fun activity can help Kid’s won’t do some- keep children motivated when it thing they don’t enjoy. comes to being active.

SUNSHINE Coast Youth Theatre (SCYT) was established in 2010 by theatrical personalities Madison Thew-Keyworth, Guy Harrison and David Williams. SCYT aims to encourage, inspire and nurture young people on the Sunshine Coast who have a passion for performing arts by providing quality opportunities

SUNSHINE Coast Youth Theatre is thrilled to bring two all-time family favourites to Noosa this summer, all on one fabulous night! Staging one production can be a daunting enough process for most but try telling that to the team at SCYT. “We have so many kids who wish to be involved,” SCYT’s artistic director Madison Thew-Keyworth said. “Staging just one production would mean having to say no to so many enthusiastic youngsters. “So we thought, well, why not stage two?” Sunshine Coast Youth Theatre has spent the summer singing, dancing and acting its way through the holidays with more than 70 performers. The most junior of these performers, those in grades three to six, are working to bring the classic Annie to the stage in their performance of Annie Kids. Meanwhile, senior performers have been busily rehearsing their performance of Alice in Wonderland Jr. Annie Kids and Alice in Wonderland Jr will be staged at The J Theatre, Noosa, on Saturday 24 January at 7pm. Tickets are on sale via The J website www.thej.com.au. For more information on how to get involved at SCYT contact Madison at SCYT on info@scyt.com.au or 0422 221 783.

Hyundai cooking with gas

The ix35 Fuel Cell is one of the most advanced cars in the world, running on hydrogen and emitting nothing but water vapour from its exhaust pipe.

The new Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell has arrived in Australia.

1170481-4-15

THE hydrogen-powered Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell has arrived in Australia, the first of its kind to be permanently imported into the country. The car emits zero emissions, running on hydrogen and emitting only water, and can be refuelled at Australia’s first and only hydrogen car refueller in Macquarie Park, Sydney. Demonstration drives are due to start within the next few weeks with the car forming the first component of Hyundai’s plans to operate a test fleet in Australia; the first step toward commercial availability of emissions-free hydrogen-powered vehicle in Australia. Hyundai Motor Company Australia (HMCA) CEO Charlie Kim said the ix35 Fuel Cell would help demonstrate the potential of hydrogen as a green transport solution for Australia. Hyundai has now begun the installation of Australia’s only hydrogen refuelling station at its headquarters in Sydney. The refuelling station is expected to be fully operational in February, following testing during December. “Ultimately, we see no reason why Australians should not enjoy the same environmental solutions as consumers in other markets,” Mr Kim said.

Champions together By JOLENE OGLE TWO champions have united - Olympic kayak champion Clint Robinson and Jeep dealer of the year for three years in a row, Cricks Noosa. Cricks Noosa were proud to announce a two-year sponsorship agreement with Olympic kayaker Clint, who drove away on Wednesday in a brand-new Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland complete with roof-racks to help get his surf skis and kayaks to training. Clint, who has a list of impressive achievements including three Olympic medals for kayaking, said it was great to have the support of a local business. Clint has been competing in surf ski and kayaking events around the world for over 25 years and boasts a long list of honours including being awarded the Order of Australia medal (OAM), installed in the Sunshine Coast sport hall of fame and the Sport Australia hall of fame. Clint says he doesn’t plan on retiring anytime soon, with a newfound passion in helping others enjoy the sport he loves so much. “At early forties it’s a little more difficult (to paddle) and I have other priorities that are, of course, in front of that now, but it keeps me fit and healthy,” he said.

“I think I’ll paddle until I actually feel like I’ve lost the ability to do things I like to do. I’ll go and have social paddles and help guys ... who come down to the (training) sessions with me. “I actually get a real kick out of helping other people now as much as I do paddling myself.” Clint’s next challenge is to tackle the 50km Molokai surf ski race in Hawaii in May and he’s taking Cricks Noosa dealer principal Matthew Murray with him. “My 67-year-old neighbour is coming to paddle with me,” Matthew said. “Between the two of us, there is over 110 years and more than 200 kg in the boat.” While busy training for the epic paddle, Matthew and the team at Cricks Noosa have taken out the Jeep dealer of the year for the third time in a row. Matthew attributes the win to having a fantastic team. “Importantly, we have the same team. We are the same team that won it three years ago as the team that won it this year,” he said. “It’s the key to our success. We’re passionate about the product. “We know the product and we stay because we love being here and we love Jeeps.”

There was not much luck for Section 5, with most rinks being decided on the last couple of ends against Kandanga. Noosa’s only heroes were Bill Roberts and Bob Heir who had a good win in their pairs match, which was played in extremely hot conditions at Kandanga. There is no Super Challenge next Saturday due to the long weekend. A special afternoon has been scheduled for next Monday to celebrate Australia Day. There’ll be an Aussie barbie before the bowls. With two games even, it was up to the doubles pair of Keith Muir and Nick Twining to win their game. In a very close game with all players making great shots it came down to the wire with 17 all on the last end. THE place was the water’s edge in Noosa’s Lion Park, the time was Sunday 7am and the occasion was yet another training session for the Noosa/Peregian Nippers interested in learning to paddle kayaks. These sessions, which commenced about three months ago, have really taken off and the words of Noosa Heads S.L.S.C. head coach Darren Mercer said it all: “Look at the kids. They have all got smiles on their faces”. Every Sunday morning at 6.45pm coaches, organisers and parents gather in the park. Kayaks are unloaded, paddles sorted out, and at 7am the coaching starts. The Nippers are broken into two groups with the first training from 7am to 8am, and the second from 8am to 9.30am. The first group then goes to Noosa’s Main beach to join in the other Nipper activities and the second are in reverse, coming from the beach to the park. Starting at under-10 the Nippers in attendance on Sunday numbered 28 with an additional 10 beginners. Also in the group were an additional five, who at ages from 17 to 19 are advanced paddlers. At the start the paddlers train in the T.K.1 craft and as they progress they move on to the K1 which is the Olympic craft. When novices commence their training they come under kayak coach Peter Pethos.

Peter, who hails from Hungary, has at the age of 66 years a wealth of experience to draw on. At present he works out of Maroochydore where he runs the Paddling Academy for Kayak, Canoe and Surf Ski competitors. During his years of competition, Peter was a highly rated, world-class competitor competing in the tough European circuit. “In a way I have a bit of regret,” he said. “Looking back now I should have kept competing. I retired at 24 and started coaching straight away.” “However,” he added with a smile and a shrug of his shoulders, “these things happen; so now, here I am.” Arriving in 1982, he lived in Adelaide for 26 years and immediately became involved in water sports. Through the years, Peter has held several positions - the most important being that of national talent and identification development officer for the Australian Sports Commission. Regarding the Nipper training program, Peter said: “It is a wonderful concept. At present I am working on developing a mini-kayak for nippers to use in the surf and do so safely”. Another who is playing a role in coaching is former Australian representative Tom Britton who takes the older age group, the 17 to 19s. Already there are one or two in this group who are starting to draw attention. In addition to the Nippers, there is also a group of ski paddlers from

The connection between the lifesaving, ski paddlers and the kayak competition is becoming stronger every year. Names like Phil Coles, Grant Kenny and Clint Robinson just to name a few, have already set the standards. Not only did they win Australian Ski titles but have gone on to represent Australia as members of the Olympic kayak teams. Coles, who hails from the North Bondi club, went on to a distinguished career in Olympic administration at an international level. Get on board for where they’re biting with families - a light rod, running sinker rig, and some fresh or cured worm for bait seems to be the way to go, with kids young and old all picking up a great feed of whiting and bream. A bit further upriver, flathead and school jew are feeding on the run out tide along the ski runs and the Tewantin Stretch. Soft plastic in reds and pinks seem to be the favourite at the moment. The beaches have also been a favourite with families. The swallow tail dart are in plague proportions, with the run-in tide the ideal time to fish ... small baits like prawns and pieces of pilchard the perfect bait. WITH slight breezes and low swell, the offshore brigade have been cleaning up - from the reef off Double Island to the Coolum Reefs, anglers have seen some great fish. Starting up towards Double Island, there have been some nice knobby snapper up to the 8kg mark as well as pearl perch and sweetlip. On North Reef we have seen cobia and maori cod as well as a swag of spotties and Spanish mackerel with a nice 16kg fish boated on one of the charters. A little further south, Char-

don’s and Sunshine Reef have been hotspots for mackerel. For those of you fishing the bottom, trout and sweetlip are also on the menu. In the river there has been a hive of activity, the river mouth has again been producing with good numbers of bream, whiting and flathead on the bite. The odd jack is in residence along the rock wall and taking a liking to live or fresh baits, with the low light and night times the most productive. Woods Bay is fishing well on the early morning tides with trevally and tarpon hitting surface lures. Gympie Terrace has been a hit

New blood gets the Tigers pumped up THIS year’s ALF season is set to be an exciting one for the Noosa Tigers, with the team ready to roar into top place. It was a close call for the squad last season, making it to the finals only to miss out on the top gong, but the Tigers are back for 2015. The club has signed new players including ex-Lions premiership player Robbie Copeland, ex-Lion and Demon player Brent Moloney, ex-Barwon Heads captain Nick Hill, ex-Tiger junior Cain Tickner, plus Lachie McCardy and Mark Riley, in a move to improve on-field leadership. A number of 100-plus-game veterans will also be pulling their jumpers on again this year including Brett Duke with an impressive 226 games under his belt, Gary Wallace with 176 games, Cubby Isles with 155, and Troy Duke with 112 games to his name. Unfortunately, last year’s courageous captain Peter Trompf is off to play in Geelong, Ryley Buntain is off to Morningside, Josh Reichmann is heading south and Dylan Dempsey is also off to new adventures. In an interview with Fox Sports, coach James Gellie said expectations were high for the 2015 season with the coaching staff ready to work hard with the new squad. “Bringing in some quality recruits won’t be the answer we are looking for in regards to the team’s overall improvement, but we have

Club invites all to lob in for a shot at the title By ANNETTE ADSETT COOLUM Beach tennis is looking forward to a great start to the season with an open day scheduled for election day, Saturday 31 January, from 9am to 2 pm. Information about all levels of tennis will be available with the courts open for free use by anyone attending. Free clinics will also be run for both juniors and adults. On Sunday 1 February, at 10am, the club is holding its annual general meeting. Club officials are looking for a good attendance from members to elect the new committee. Forms are available to nominate committee members attached to the white board inside the clubhouse. Womp Comp action from last year, with Noosa local Matt Cuddihy.

Waterman Weekend LAUNCHING this year’s Crick’s Noosa Festival of Surfing, Waterman Weekend will celebrate all things oceanic, with three divisions of stand-up paddling joining the previouslyannounced body surfing and multi-discipline events. “We want all beach users to join in the festivities over our opening weekend,” said festival director Phil Jarratt. After a resoundingly successful first year in 2014, the Deus Womp Comp returns - an open body-surfing division that is attracting an international contingent of the world’s finest. Always fiercely contested, the SUP disciplines will include both surf and race categories. Last year’s dynamic final of the Ocean Addicts SUP Men’s Open saw Justin Holland emerge victorious in a challenging heat, which included Geoff Breen, Matt Roach, Roger Saunders, Tully St. John and the always impressive Beau Nixon. Last year’s Men’s Open semi-finalist, Paul Jones will lead a team of volunteers from Sunshine Coast SUP Club, coming on board to organise and oversee the SUP divisions. Jonesy has developed two courses for the SUP race, utilising his local knowledge to devise routes that incorporate both open ocean and surf components. The amateur race features a 3.5 kilometre, triangular course, beginning offshore and concluding on the beach at First Point, while the

pro race, a 5.7 kilometre, square route, will comprise a beach run section on each of its four laps. Part SUP, part ironman challenge, this gruelling event has attracted an international field of professional athletes. The weekend’s festivities will also include the festival’s official opening ceremony and paddle out, as well as a star-studded Legends Exhibition, with some of the world’s finest surfers of the past four decades taking to the waves in a display of their exceptional talents. Join the fun at the Cricks Noosa Festival of Surfing for “8 Days of Pure Stoke” from 7 to 14 March, and bring the family. Free live music every night on the Zinc Stage, and cold beer at the XXXX Summer Bar, all part of the PJ Burns Festival Village on the sand at First Point. Course and SUP division info will be added to the website in coming days and announced through social media, so please join in on Facebook - NoosaFestSurf - for regular updates and further announcements. A handful of places are still available for all SUP divisions. To register, visit our website now at www.noosafestivalofsurfing.com and select the Competitors option from the menu.
