RICHARD Vecoli could hardly have been less prepared for the cowardly boot to the face that fractured his eye socket in two places, tore his lip, smashed up his cheek and ripped the retina in his right eye. He was sitting with a mate on the Moorabool St footpath, leaning against a 7-Eleven wall head down, texting another friend in the early hours of last Saturday morning when the attack came out of nowhere. A stocky, fair-headed thug ran at Mr Vecoli and kicked him square in the face with all the full force of his combined weight and speed - without any prior conversation, provocation or warning. The lean 19-year-old tennis champion and Australian Open ball boy, soon to begin commerce studies at Deakin University, was badly hurt and shocked. Luckily he had the good sense to get away to avoid further injury as his attacker remonstrated with Mr Vecoli’s mate. The assault preceded an horrific assault on a 12-year-old girl just metres away in Geelong’s mall days earlier in broad daylight. Video of the later at-

The violence again depicted central Geelong as dangerous, violent and unsafe. “I’m still in shock,” Mr Vecoli told the Independent this week. “I go back to watch the footage to see if it really happened. I thought there’d be adrenalin but it was just pain, I was spitting out skin from the inside of my lip. “I have two fractures in my eye socket and tissue damage on my jaw. The specialist said the retina in my right eye was the most swollen he’d seen in a year - all this damage from just one kick. Continued page 2

ANYONE still considering golf a leisure pursuit rather than a sport would have had their views radically changed had they been at 13th Beach course this week. Human services agency Karingal turned the genteel pastime into a marathon as golfers tried to play 100 holes in one day for the Hundred Hole Hike, a fundraiser for Eastern Geelong Community Centre. Golfers teed off at 5.45am and kept going until dusk, walking up to 80km and hitting up to 500 shots. Sounds like a normal round for a few golfing acquaintances. MOTORISTS, if not cyclists, would have laughed at a witty addition to a Bike Safe sign, pictured, on the Bellarine Hwy near Whittington recently. The tag line’s been removed since Greg Wane snapped the picture but at least the wag responsible should know the joke would have hit home at the

We headed to 7-Eleven to get something to eat. “I phoned my girlfriend to see if she could give us a lift home but she was sick. “We’d been talking to some Melbourne blokes who were funny, buying food and then wondering about getting a cab or a friend to pick us up. I had messaged a friend and had sat down and was waiting for his reply. “I was on the phone and only saw something in my peripheral vision before I felt this foot in the face. I never got a good look and I tried to sprint off as he took a second swing. “He asked my friend if we were the c...s from the bakery. He said no and the bloke said, ’Just go home, just go home’.” Mr Vecoli, of Bell Park, lost his phone in the incident after it went flying as he dived for cover. He was told it was taken by an unknown person. Police described the attacker as caucasian with a stocky build and fair or reddish hair. He was wearing a dark maroon T-shirt and black shorts. The draft report said users would need to accept a “cultural shift” away from the expectation that parking near local beaches was unrestricted. “Parking is a valuable resource that must be shared fairly and equitably among visitors to the area,” the report said. Car parking and transport faced growing pressure on the Surf Coast, which contained some of the most visited sections of beachfront in Victoria, the report said. The draft Coastal User Transport

would have impacts on Surf Coast Shire. “Time restrictions in GORCC car parks close to employment centres may displace some commuter parking and extra capacity may need to be provided elsewhere.” GORCC also released a plan to upgrade the Darian Rd car park in Torquay, set to lose 2400 square metres of parking space. The area, to be re-turfed for open space, could lose about 80 informal car parks. GORCC plans to seal an access road and turnaround, reducing formal car parks from "80 or 90" to 73, adding two disabled bays. Vehicle control barriers and an

access gate at Cowrie Rd to restrict vehicles to overflow parking in peak periods would be installed under the proposal. Parking could come under further pressure on peak days with a longer term Surf Coast Shire plan to widen The Esplanade and establish parallel parking. Geelong council this week painted yellow edge lines along 13th Beach Rd nominating where drivers cannot stop at the side of the road. The move will prevent dozens of cars often parked along the busy road during peak summer periods. Public submissions on the Darian Rd car park opened on Boxing Day and close 6 February.

Pier works A $15 MILLION redevelopment of Portarlington Pier will begin in the first week of February, State Government has announced. Geelong nets inaugural round of 3X3 Nationals centres across Australia. The national titles would have male and female teams in under-14s, under-18s and open divisions, Mr Moore said. “3X3 has been extremely popular overseas and I am confident that Australia will also experience

Man-made climate change proponent Ray Black, former sustainability head at Gordon Institute of TAFE, and others have called for the Independent to ban letters from sceptics, particularly prominent local campaigner Alan Barron. Sceptics have responded with a flood of letters arguing their right to question climate change theory. But Dr Black said they were hijacking free speech with claims that scientific facts were demonstrably wrong. Publishing their claims put the environment and people at risk from the impacts of climate change, he said. Dr Black called for the mainstream media to enforce tougher standards on purported scientific evidence that it reported. He said the media must improve its vetting of inaccurate claims about climate change and accused Mr Barron of â&#x20AC;&#x153;hijackingâ&#x20AC;? the publicâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;inalienable right to free speechâ&#x20AC;? with dangerous misinformation. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Freedom of speech shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be allowed to be a vehicle for the perpetuation of incorrect misinformation - thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s propaganda,â&#x20AC;? he said.

The biggest private fruit and vegetable company in Australia plans to sell up, either by stockmarket float or a trade sale - potentially becoming 100 per cent offshore-owned. A sale is tipped to draw between $800 million and $1 billion. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nothing intrinsic in this move that will change the management structure. This is a change of share,â&#x20AC;? A PAIR of locals is among Parks Victoriaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new crew of seasonal rangers working around the region to help out during its busiest season. Paul Shields, of Barwon Heads, and Barrabool's Michael Mackenzie are helping out in the Great Otway National Park and are enjoying putting theory into practice. Paul is based at Anglesea where he's running rock pool rambles and involved in Parks Victoriaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s longest-running small-mammal monitoring program. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It will be really great to help teach kids about the importance of conservation in a fun way and to include knowledge that I learned at university,â&#x20AC;? he said. Paul recently completed a Bachelor of Marine Biology at Deakin University in Warrnambool and has qualifications in conservation and land management. Michael, with a degree in agricultural science and a graduate certificate in outdoor and environmental education, is based in Apollo Bay. He will help manage and maintain the Great Ocean Walk, other areas of the Great Otway National Park and run educational programs. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m looking forward to exploring the Otways and building on my knowledge about the area and natural resource management,â&#x20AC;? he said. Elderly, unwell ‘forced to leave homes’ without transport

Bus cut plan alarms residents By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN ELDERLY and unwell Newtown residents say looming bus service cuts will force them to sell up and move. More than 200 residents around the Barwon River end of West Fyans St have signed a petition protesting the Public Transport Victoria (PTV) cuts, set to begin in April as part of a bus network redesign for Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula. One of the petition organisers, Lionel TunnellJones, said many elderly and unwell residents would be left without transport. “This is a very steep area and you cannot expect the elderly and unwell to climb that hill up West Fyans St, Ardlui Dve or Camden Rd to access public transport,” he said. “Cutting the route completely will disenfranchise quite a lot of people. It may not be a heavily patronised service but the people who do use it really do need it. “The only service would be five blocks away on Shannon Ave near Stinton Ave. Most of those that use the service currently are elderly and people with a disability and do not have a car. “A number have told me that if the route is cut they would have to move somewhere where they have access to public transport. “For that to happen would be morally wrong.” Mr Tunnell-Jones said residents hoped the new State Government would reconsider the cuts. PTV said a new bus network proposed for Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula provided moredirect routes, higher frequency of services and improved connections with trains. Mr Tunnell-Jones said Geelong was growing and aligning bus timetables with trains was a step in right direction. “But it appears we’re to be collateral damage. It would be nice if they can get it right for all of us. “We don’t want to see the community here disadvantaged for someone else. Everyone is entitled to public transport but not at our expense.” The petition will be presented to new Geelong MP Christine Couzens next week. Geelong council has extended its opportunity for feedback on the new bus network until 30 January.

Alcoa ‘extends’ search for power plant buyer By NOEL MURPHY ALCOA’S Anglesea power plant remains on the market with several potential buyers vying for the controversial coal-powered plant despite expectations it would be sold or shut down by the end of 2014. More than 80 jobs are on the line at the plant, which had been used to power Alcoa’s Point Henry operations in Geelong until the last of them closed last month, cutting 800 jobs and ending a 51-year aluminium era. “The sale process is continuing,”

Alcoa spokesperson Kate Betts told the Independent this week. “A shortlist of potential buyers was developed from the initial expressions of interest and our initial expectation was that the process would be complete by the end of 2014. “However, it has proved to be more complex than we anticipated. We remain focused on working through it as quickly as possible. “As we said before, if a sale is not possible we'll evaluate options at that time, including possible closure.” Concerns about emissions from

the Anglesea plant have prompted a concerted campaign for closure from community group Surf Coast Air Action but Alcoa maintains its operations are all within regulatory demands. “With regard to claims of serious health threats, Alcoa complies with all regulations and legal obligations with regard to its Anglesea operations,” Ms Betts said. “The procedures, equipment, quality of data reported and quality management systems in place are audited by the EPA and NATA (National Association of Testing Authorities) to

ensure we meet the current standards required for air monitoring. “In the 2013 Human Health Risk Assessment (HHRA), which was peer reviewed, it is concluded that the potential for emissions from the power station and the coal mine to cause chronic (long term) health effects is considered to be low, and that the possible acute (short term) health risk is not considered to be cause for concern due to the inherent conservatism embedded in the exposure assessment applied to screening health risk assessment.”

nity members buying a key or a pipe. “The organ’s really part of the cultural heritage in Queenscliff, so the church worked very hard,” Mr Lukin said. The concert will also help cover costs remaining from the organ restoration. Mr Lukin said the concert would take the audience on a journey in tribute to Australia and its Indigenous people. “I want to take people to the Dreamtime.” The concert will feature Mr Lukin playing organ and tuba alongside wife Catherine and their 13-year-old son, Dominic, both sopranos. WHEN I left school I began working in factories amid loud machinery and, for fun, I played piano in bands three nights weekly without considering the damage to my ears. I was out with friends for dinner at a very noisy restaurant recently and was able to understand multiple conversations, which I think was due to the directional microphones following where I was looking and the computer doing all the background noise-cancelling to make my dinner out a very enjoyable experience. My previous hearing aids could cancel out background noise but were less clear and accurate. I’ve also noticed a big change when listening to radio in my car. GEELONG is the 19th least affordable property market of 378 major international centres, according to a new survey. Demographica ranked Geelong alongside the exurban area of outer-London for unaffordability in its 11th annual International Housing Affordability Survey. The survey covered Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, United States, Japan, Canada, Hong Kong, Ireland and Singapore. Geelong ranked in the top 20 despite easing in the survey’s afforability index from 7.3 last year to 6.9 this year. The overall Australian affordability index was 5.5. Geelong's 6.9 was calculated on a median property price of $410,000 and a median household income of $59,600. New York’s index was 6.1. The survey ranked 48 of its 51 Australian property markets surveyed as seriously or severely

unaffordable. The other three were affordable or moderately unaffordable. It was the first year Australia had any affordable markets. The least affordable market was Sydney, with a median multiple index of 9.8. “This is a substantial increase from last year’s 9.0,” the survey said. “This makes Sydney the third least affordable out of the 86 major markets rated in this survey. “Housing affordability also deteriorated in Melbourne, rising to a median multiple index of 8.7 in 2014 from 8.3 in 2013. “There were signs of considerable improvement among the smaller markets of Australia. "Gladstone achieved a rating of 3.9. Townsville and Latrobe tied for fourth most affordable market, with a rating of 4.3.” Co-author Wendell Cox said Australia might have become a nation of renters rather than own-

ers without land containment policies introduced in 1950. “The Great Australian Dream and an unusually prosperous people might have not emerged,” he said. The ranking supports Master Builders Association of Victoria research last year that found Geelong housing had declined from unaffordable in 2004 to highly unaffordable. The affordability crisis deepened despite the release of extra land in the region, with further allotment supplies flagged for Lara, Lovely Banks and Batesford south. The Independent reported last year that increased land supplies in Armstrong Creek was aimed at driving greater competition and lower prices for home-buyers. The Barwon region has the fifth most expensive land in Australia, according to Housing Industry Association and RP Data figures.

Stroke danger drives Dianne

ITâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S THE small but emotionally significant difference between empathy and sympathy that makes Hightonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Dianne Speed a great ambassador for the National Stroke Foundation. The empathy comes from Dianneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s experience suffering a massive stroke aged 26 just 18 hours after giving birth to her baby daughter. She used the experience to become a StrokeSafe Ambassador, educating the community about the dangers of stroke and its warning signs. Dianne said she was â&#x20AC;&#x153;embarrassed but proudâ&#x20AC;? that her volunteer work attracted a nomination in the inaugural People with Disability Awards Geelong, to be announced on 3 February. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m one of three nominations and we all have an equal chance,â&#x20AC;? Dianne said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It would be nice to win but if I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t matter because Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m out there talking about stroke and it will help anyway.â&#x20AC;? Dianne said she was using the nomination to further publicity about stroke because it was a hidden and misunderstood killer. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Raising stroke awareness is important because it often goes unrecognised even though it is the second highest killer in Australia. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It also happens to young people as well as older and thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s something not many understand.â&#x20AC;? Dianne also volunteers with White Lion and youth organisations.

Letters Free speech value irrefutable DR RAY Black’s thoughtful lesson on climate science (Letters , 16 January) was welcome but he still calls for the banning of “climate deniers” on the grounds that the matter is too serious and “it is no time to be confused”. Climate is not the only subject that confuses people. As a teacher of science, Dr Black might be equally concerned that certain religious schools teach creationism in science class instead of evolution. The Darwinian theory evolution by natural selection is as settled as Dr Black believes global warming to be, yet we don’t call for creationists to be banned from the letters page. They give evolutionists a chance to refute them. Besides, free speech is a serious matter, too, and threatened by politically correct demands that we not offend certain religious fanatics who have not been educated in how liberal democracies work. Falsehoods need to be met with reasoned argument, not censorship. I look forward to Dr Black’s contribution to free enquiry. Tim Saclier Leopold

Inconvenient facts IT STRIKES me as bizarre that Dr Ray Black, who it seems is an academic, and who almost by definition should encourage discussion on a subject in order to get to the truth, advocates the muzzling of someone with whom he evidently disagrees. Is this the same Dr Ray Black who, some time ago, was suddenly unable to meet Mr Barron in a public discussion? Could it be that Dr Black, despite his claims that Mr Barron is “misleading ... people away from settled science” and that Mr Barron “betrays a mind ideologically driven”, is unprepared to produce his own facts to refute Mr Barron in a public debate? Surely not! I note there is a little Greek chorus of Independent correspondents singing the same hymn and who are likewise keen to muzzle Mr Barron. There seems to be a group of anthropogenic global warming enthusiasts who are becoming increasingly more desperate to defend their alarmist positions, particularly as satellite observations show no global warming for over 18 years now. Let Mr Barron continue to present his facts, and let his critics come up with some verifiable facts of their own instead of mere group-think waffle. Michael Spencer Burwood

Dr Black ignored the reality that there has been no statistically significant increase in global temperatures for the past 18 years despite a 10 per cent increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2), which his theory cannot explain. Over recent millennia there have been several well-documented periods of global temperature change, including periods when temperatures were higher than now. The global temperature rise since 1800 is simply recovery from the terrible Little Ice Age, for which we should be thankful. The past 200 years included three brief periods of global warming: 1860-1880, 1910-1940 and 1975-1997. The rate of warming in each was similar at 16C per decade but atmospheric CO2 didn’t start to rise until World War II, so the first two rises could not have been caused by CO2. Denier’s propaganda stall THE SO-CALLED global warming debate is not a genuine debate based on science. Global warming deniers started in the US in the ‘80s as a movement by people with an ideological response to a scientific problem. They regarded arguments about the need to prevent harm to the environment as socialism by stealth. Their organisations have been well-funded by people with vested interest in continuing business as usual, such as coal and oil. And they have been successful. They know they can’t win the scientific argument but they don’t need to; stalling action is sufficient and has been achieved in spades by poisoning the discussion with propaganda-style misinformation. These are the sources of the rubbish that Mr Barron passes off as informed science and which his supporters are repeating. Note that this is only in the public and political spheres where the audience is generally not scientific. In the real scientific world there is about as much doubt about climate change as there is that Earth goes around the sun. Dr Ray Black works in this world and I can understand his frustration that deniers have been given a free platform for their propaganda for so long when it’s clear we need to start proper action now. Climate work in progress IT’S STRANGE how some people can only see life from one perspective. Lindsay Brown and Tim Saclier criticise Dr Ray Black for correcting one of Alan Barron’s inept letters, then go ahead quoting the same half-truths and misquotes. First we have the claim that nothing in science is ever settled. Perhaps we should still research whether Earth is round or flat. Likewise, the science on global warming caused by man-made increases in CO2 is done and dusted but that’s not to say it has proven all aspects of this complex problem. We still have to learn what can be done today to save future generations. Then we have Mr Saclier relying on a paper by Nic Lewis and Dr Judith Curry that claims to have used “observations instead of computer modelling” for his support of Alan Barron’s global warming scepticism. Mr Lewis is a financier who admits he is a global warming denier and knows no more about it than Mr Saclier, while Dr Curry believes man-made CO2 will increase temperatures only 2C by 2090 whereas the International Panel on Climate Change estimates a 2C increase by 2040. TRIBUTE: Motor City Music Festival has named INXSIVE as the headliner on the event’s Tribute Fest night.

CAFE Narana at Narana Aboriginal Cultural Centre is the perfect place for the whole family to be immersed in a new world of culture. The recent addition of the café to the centre has been welcomed by locals and tourists alike. Manager Jodie describes the meals as fresh, providing a healthy and “wholesome” experience. With an all-day breakfast, the most popular dish is the bush berry pancakes with salted caramel ice-cream. Customers are made to feel welcome as they are immediately immersed in Aboriginal culture, with eight roof panels telling an indigenous story. A family friendly environment, there is a playground outside for children as well as a chance to feed the emus. With the menu also changing seasonally to reflect Aboriginal culture, summer dishes include kangaroo sliders as well as the indigenous tasting plate with calamari, smoked veal, potato salad and snapper taco. “We try to experiment,” Jodie explained. Meals are made using herbs and spices from Outback Pride, a local Australian organisation where all proceeds from packets sold from Narana’s Gift Shop go back to the community.

SANDRA Clack Ballet Centre’s motto for 2015 is ‘Share the love of dance’. The centre invites parents to take advantage of two free lessons for new students. The centre’s fully qualified, carefully trained and registered teachers of Cecchetti Ballet Australia are committed to providing a stable and secure foundation for each student’s training, whether for recreational enjoyment or as the beginnings of a career in dance.

Pre-school children are encouraged to use their imagination, movement and mime while learning the basics of classical ballet. As students progress through each level they learn the timeless Cecchetti principles of grace, balance and line. Heading to the top end By EWAN KENNEDY HYUNDAI Genesis is an upmarket, high-tech sedan/saloon which is designed to tackle the big-name Germans and Brits at their own game at the top end of the market. This is a large car, bigger than the Holden Commodore and Ford Falcon. It’s also a little larger than the cars with which Hyundai would like to compete head on; Mercedes-Benz E-Class, BMW 5 Series, Audi A6 and Jaguar XF. The new Hyundai Genesis is priced from $60,000 making it a bargain in its class. Interestingly, the Genesis may benefit from the withdrawal of Ford and Holden from manufacturing in Australia. Limousine companies, taxi operators, corporate owners, even government fleets, are all on the lookout for large cars to replace Caprice, Statesman, Commodore, LTD, Fairlane and Falcon. Genesis is not as out-there in its shape as the smaller Hyundai models. As it’s aimed at more conservative buyers with substantially more money than the owners of the rest of the Hyundai range, this is probably a sensible move. The shape is graceful and very much in the European vein which is interesting as one of the senior designers was a KoreanAustralian fellow. The Hyundai has a large single-frame grille of the type favoured by Audi and Mercedes, though BMW has taken a different direction, as has Jaguar. The side profile is curved and almost in four-door coupe territory. There’s a fashionable rise in the window line at the side-rear. Tail treatment has a built-in spoiler lip and the wide stance gives Genesis a powerful look from the rear. There’s no doubt this is a large car. The interior of the Genesis is excellent, with a modern appearance using multiple materials, including an upmarket handstitched look, real timber, suede and aluminium. Like just about every prestige car these days, Hyundai Genesis has an analog-look clock sitting in the centre of the dashboard. However, it’s rather small and doesn’t exactly grab attention the way competitors do. Only one engine is offered in the Australian Genesis though the gen-two model now has its steering wheel on the Australian side, only those buyers who drive on the ‘other’ side of the road have a V8 option. Our Genesis has a thoroughly modern 3.8-litre petrol V6 developing 235 kilowatts of power and 400 Nm of torque. Transmission is by an eightspeed automatic to the rear wheels. Yes, the rear wheels, as in Mercedes, BMW and Jaguar, though not Audi. The Hyundai Genesis is crammed with the latest in incar entertainment, including a 17-speaker Lexicon audio system. Bluetooth, USB and Aux inputs are simple to use. The screen

car is nicely balanced; even better, the Genesis can be cornered on the throttle in true rear-drive fashion if you’re feeling that way inclined. At over two tonnes with just one person on board it can hardly be described as nimble. Seat comfort in the front is very good, with side support that works nicely without the seat bolsters being too aggressive. Fair enough, the Genesis isn’t intended to be a sports sedan. Despite the apparently sleek roofline there’s good headroom in the rear of this big saloon. Legroom in the back is good without being outstanding if tall adults are travelling in the front, but powering the front seats forward brings the Genesis into the semi-limo class. Three can be carried in the back but, as in rear-drive cars footroom in the centre-rear seat is compromised by the transmission tunnel. The rear-centre armrest folds down to provide not only extra comfort, but also to give access to controls for the infotainment and ventilation systems. As is common in large Asian cars the front passenger seat can be controlled by way of controls in the rear seats. This lets the most important person in a limo, the man (sadly, it almost invariably is a man) sitting diagonally behind the driver, the ability to maximise their knee and foot room. Noise and vibration are impressively reduced. Hyundai Genesis makes an excellent long distance tourer, even on rough and ready Australian bush roads. Josh McDonald (28) and Eamonn Vines (56) appeared in fine touch and at 2/75 the Cats were wellplaced. But from there everything fell apart as regular wickets toppled, leaving the visitors all out for just 146. To sum up Geelong’s woes, none of the middle or lower order could muster double figures. In reply, the Cats bowlers never had a chance as Prahran cruised to a seven-wicket win. Apart from Vines, who has really stood tall this season, a lot of players have had poor seasons.

Snapper, flatties, whiting bagged in ‘shelter’ of bay CORIO Bay was a real asset for anglers last week as it provided shelter from strong winds. Pinkie snapper were abundant for anglers casting soft plastics around structures, whether it was land based or from a boat. The odd pike to almost 1m made an appearance, too. These fish take a liking to most soft plastics but the only drawback is their scissor-like teeth, which tend to cut off leaders. Out toward the entrance of Corio Bay snapper to 3kg were taken on the tide changes with baits such as pilchard and fresh squid. The grammar school lagoon produced flathead to 55cm, with anglers working soft plastics along the channel edges enjoying the best results. Whiting were the prime target at Clifton Springs where anglers targeted the edges of the mussel beds. The fish averaged 30cm to 35cm and responded well to bait such as pippies and tenderised squid. Some exceptional flathead to 50cm were taken as a welcome bycatch in the same area. A few kingfish to 9kg were taken in The Rip by anglers using 180g to 230g knife. Lonsdale Bight continued holding reasonable numbers of big squid. The deeper water and larger jigs returned the best results. Queenscliff Harbour continued to go from strength to strength on silver

trevally to 45cm, which took 2.5-inch grubs fished on the tide changes. The Barwon River estuary produced a mixed bag of whiting, Australian salmon, trevally and mulloway. Pippie was hands down the most effective bait for each species bar mulloway, most of which were caught on whole pilchards or hardbody lures such as Daiwa Double Clutches. Kingfish to 65cm were schooling in large numbers around Charlemont Reef, off 13th Beach. Casting lures into fish busting up on the surface was a sure bet, although knife jigging or trolling deep-diving lures was the tactic of choice when the fish went deeper. Surf Coast beaches produced salmon to 2kg on lures such as 25g Sluks. Bancoora was the standout but anglers who fished further down toward Lorne reported bigger numbers of fish. Freshwater destinations hosted some of the better fishing for the week. Lake Bullen Merri again fished extremely well for Chinook salmon, with anglers fishing bait taking baglimit captures. Ognjen Mijatovic put in a few hours on Sunday afternoon, catching his bag in no time. Ognjen’s biggest Chinook went 3.4kg and his most successful baits were minnow and Powerbait. Next door, anglers fishing mudeye down deep against the weed beds at Lake Purrumbete boated brown trout to 2kg. Making an early start was essential to catching numbers of fish. Wurdee Boluc Reservoir, also known as The Lake of 1000 Casts, provided trophy redfin and small rainbow trout for anglers who put in plenty of time. Michael Evans banked a 45cm redfin and several rainbow trout of around 30cm on Fish Arrow Flash J Shad three-inch soft plastics. Next week should see kingfish really come on the chew with the onset of warmer weather. The Rip or offshore from Barwon Heads should be great places to start looking. Spinning the surf in north winds should produce Australian salmon, while Lake Bullen Merri will be good for Chinooks.

Bannockburn could only manage 128 before the Redbacks wiped 22 off the deficit. Despite losing two wickets, they will feel confident of a much-needed win tomorrow.

A hole lot of fun for Lachlan, 8 AN EIGHT-YEAR-OLD boy holidaying at Clifton Springs has achieved a feat that eludes many golfers for their lifetimes - a hole in one. Mt Waverley’s Lachlan Snart, pictured with his lucky ball, aced the sixth at the town’s golf course with a 110m drive that flew over a dam, rolled across the green, hit the flag and tumbled into the pot. Lachlan, who has played since the age of two, said he hit his first hole in one after ignoring dad Nick’s advice on which driver to use. “It wasn’t the one dad recommended because I usually use a different club on that hole,” he said.
