■ Charity says federal knockback is a huge blow to the most vulnerable...

I can’t even sleep at night,” he said. “The unemployment rate is 20 per cent-plus and it’s going to get worse. “I know what it’s like as a child to
go without. I don’t want people under my care to go without. “I feel terrible to have to make a decision - who’s going to have food on the table and who’s not going to have food on the table.” Mr Rechichi became involved with the society in 1986, assisting wife Teresa. He’s worked there full-time since
2009 and 12 years ago took the leadership. “I hope the government can reverse their decision. Certainly it’s not the way to run the country. It’s not,” he said. “We provide a free service, and that’s the part of it that really hurts. “We open our hearts to assist people and they take the funds away.” Isaacs MP Mark Dreyfus said the

decision was cruel and damaging. “The social dividend derived from this relatively modest amount of funding is enormous,” he said. “To cut this service will devastate some of the most vulnerable in our community.” The Journal contacted the Department of Social Services but did not receive a response.

“SOME of our clients will starve.” This was the dire warning from Springvale Benevolent Society volunteer and councillor Roz Blades last week after the Federal Government withdrew its support for the group. The society has been providing food vouchers, blankets and other assistance to the community for 53 years next month and received Department of Social Services (DSS) funding for the past 20 years. But Cr Blades was devastated to receive an email addressed “dear applicant” stating that the department had rejected the society’s recent grant application. “Dear grant applicant, after 53 years? Come on,” she said. “It’s a slap in the face. “Centrelink refers to us. They’re a Federal Government agency and they refer to us. “But the Federal Government won’t fund us. “It’s an inhumane decision. No one will look after the families we look after. “They’re struggling. Some are disabled. Some are refugees. “People will starve and it will be on their heads.” The email said the grants round had been a highly competitive process and the society had not been selected as a preferred applicant. The society last year received $70,000 and spent almost $100,000 in total. “We’ve still got money coming from the council - there’s a funding agreement - and we’re still well-supported by churches and schools,” Cr Blades said. But making up the $70,000 shortfall will be near-impossible and she’s hoping the government will change its mind. “We’re hopeful that we can convince them by the weight of evidence,” she said.

GREATER DANDENONG’S TOP AUSSIES
Thriving after camp survival By CASEY NEILL BURMESE refugee Mas Mai has not only survived hardship over the past 20 years - he’s thrived. Today he received the Multicultural Award at the Greater Dandenong Australia Day Awards. Mas and wife Kha Re Mar left behind everything they owned as the Burmese army obliterated their town, Kyeikdon. They trekked 45 kilometres through tropical jungle over three days without food and
water, their children aged four and two in tow. Gunfire raged behind them as they crossed the border into Thailand where they spent 10 years locked in a refugee camp. Mas and Kha settled in Springvale with their four children seven years ago and, with help from charity Urban Neighbours of Hope, set up the Free Burma Cafe. The couple now independently run and own the cafe, which showcases Burmese food and culture. Greater Dandenong Australia Day Awards judges said
Free Burma was also a hub where Burmese people could go for advice and assistance, to socialise and to celebrate and pray. They said Mas was a highly respected community leader who promoted harmony, tolerance and inclusion and was a great asset to the municipality. “It’s like a dream,” Mas said of past horrors. He still knows family and friends living behind the fence in Thailand, including Kha’s nephew and niece. They send money to them

an unsanitary jail where children languished without education. “It’s hard to survive. Every

First were the Vietnamese and then a lot of Afghans and now it is Sudanese.”
Natalie, who has lived in Dandenong North for 40 years, describes her pupils as “friends“. “They have certainly become friends. We have birthday parties and celebrate their festivals. “We share a lot. I learn a lot about their cultures and customs and I teach them civic things about
what is expected in Australia.” Friends from Portland joined Natalie’s proud husband in the audience on Australia Day to see her receive her Australia Day award. A small celebration with her students will have to wait until classes resume in February. - Narelle Coulter

Standout spirit of service By CASEY NEILL GREATER Dandenong Citizen of the Year Beverley Douglas is “amazed that anyone thought that I’d deserve it, actually”. The 70-year-old was set to receive her honour at the council’s Australia Day Awards ceremony at the Drum Theatre in Dandenong today (Monday). Judges said the Springvale resident of more than 60 years had been instrumental in helping the Springvale Learning and Activity Centre (SLAC) respond to a changing community through new programs and services. “Her community spirit, can-do

attitude and selfless commitment to helping others demonstrates the true meaning of community service and makes her a standout figure for Citizen of the Year,” they said. Beverley modestly told the Journal she did “only a little bit” for the community. She started her work at SLAC 38 years ago when it was Springvale Youth Club and her children attended for a range of activities such as gymnastics, dance and music lessons. “I used to help with anything that needed to be done - putting up gymnastics equipment, sewing dance costumes,” she said. “I’ve been on the committee for
about 30 years now. I’ve been vicepresident for 10 years. “It’s mostly committee work now.” Beverley said the centre was always welcoming and friendly. “Over these years I’ve made friends there. I’ve just felt that it was something that I enjoy doing,” she said. “I’ve just stayed around.” And her eldest daughter Leah has too, despite working full time and living in McKinnon. “She’d been the secretary for a few years and took over the presidency at our last annual meeting,” she said.
Beverley can be found at SLAC once a week these days and will continue to be involved “while I’m still fit and can drive up there and contribute to the centre”. “We don’t have as much for the younger children as we used to when we first became involved there,” she said. “There are things for young people there, like homework support groups and basketball. “But it’s more a place for the community, from young teenagers right through to the very elderly.” Beverley thanked the staff and committee members who nominated her.

The City of Greater Dandenong's Young Leader of the Year Rohullah Rahimi. 133353 Bachelor of Social Science in psychology. He is now hoping to be accepted into a masters program. He said issues facing young people in Greater Dandenong were constantly changing but nominated family violence, alcohol and drugs, employment and bullying as the issues of greatest concern.
He wants to be at the coalface of efforts to alleviate these problems and give other young people a chance to reach their full potential. That his leadership efforts have been recognised with an Australia Day honour thrilled and humbled the quietly spoken 23-year-old. “This award increases my

responsibility to make more of a contribution and help young people; advocate on their behalf,” Rohullah said. “Being recognised gives me a wonderful feeling and encourages me to work for my friends, community and Australia.“ He describes becoming an Aussie in 2014 as an “amazing feeling“.

LAST Australia Day Rohullah Rahimi proudly became an Aussie. This year the young Afghan refugee stepped up on stage once again, this time to accept the award as the City of Greater Dandenong’s 2015 Young Leader of the Year. Rohullah was recognised for his work with young people. He is employed by the City of Greater Dandenong as an assistant youth worker and has volunteered as an adviser with the Centre for Multicultural Youth, participated in the council’s Young Leaders Program, represents the Hazara community on the Refugee Council of Australia and is secretary of the Assocaition of Australian Students from Afghanistan. Rohullah’s story is a familiar one among his Hazara contempories in Dandenong wrenched from his homeland as a child, he and his family lived itinerant lives in Pakistan and Iran before getting the opportunity of a lifetime - the chance of a new future in Australia. He is driven and determined to make the most of the oppor-
tunity for which he and his family risked everything. “My brother sponsored me to come here and he told me if you want to be a successful Aussie you need to speak English. “He told me of the expectations Australians have for refugees, that they integrate and that I became familiar a little bit with the rules, policies and norms here.“ Since arriving in 2010, Rohullah has been on a relentless quest to better himself and his adopted community through education. He learnt English at AMES in Dandenong before enrolling in Year 11 at Chisholm TAFE. He completed Year 12 at Dandenong High School while also studying for a diploma of community service at Carrick Institute based at Docklands. He was, he said, “very focused on my study“ not finishing classes in the city until 10.30pm after which he would catch a train back to Dandenong and get up in the morning and be in class at Dandenong High by 9am. Pizza with lot of paradise By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS IT TAKES a super-supreme reason for a pizzeria to stand out from the Melbourne pack. For Dandenong eatery Taste of Paradise Halal Pizza, regular customers travel from as far away as the western suburbs, willing to eschew a multitude of pizza stores. The business was first called Malibu but gave way to its more evocative title - more in keeping with its customers’ glowing reviews. One absolutist diner proclaimed it the “best pizza on Earth” - now incorporated as the store’s slogan. Taste of Paradise owner and culinary artist Suda Perera is a fan of simple, inventive pizza combinations on a medium-crust chewy dough. The crowd favourite is the tandoori chicken - that’s set off by a tangy-andspicy combination of secret-recipe
EAT LOCAL, DINE GLOBAL dry curry, pineapple and mozzarella. That’s closely followed by the hot fish curry - a serving of marinated mackerel in a spicy sauce and mozzarella. “I don’t want to overcomplicate my recipes. I like the simplicity,” Perera says. “They’re the same recipes as when I started. Why should I change? The customers are satisfied. I don’t want to confuse them.” This store makes a loud statement. Its yellow shopfront signage shouts ‘Halal Pizza’ - the first such outlet in Dandenong. Its meats are certified Halal - and don’t include pork.
The cheery staff’s shiny uniforms are emblazoned with the Paradise logo and images of onion and garlic on their backs. It’s a major supporter of the Muslim Eid Festival, to local mosques and cancer fund-raisers, and has won over stomachs of all faiths. The store recently won Dandenong Retail Trader Association’s Retailer of the Year award. “Success has been from the quality of the service. We try to connect with all the community,” Mr Perera says. The Sri Lankan-born engineer set up the business 19 years ago after struggling to find work in Australia. That’s when he started getting interested in food, manufacturing his own recipes and spice combinations. Suffice to say, he does his own maintenance around the shop. He set up in Dandenong because

LOOKING BACK at the last meeting of the Dandenong Shire Council the inadequate train service was brought home to our municipal representatives. The South riding councillors, in view of the fact that the council concluded its business at half-past 5 o’clock reckoned upon catching the 6.08 train, but upon reference to the latest timetable, it was found that the 6.08 is now only scheduled for Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays and nothing more convenient could be found than the 6.51, which runs daily, with the exception of Saturdays. A large and influential deputation should be arranged by the shire council in order to have the present unsatisfactory state of affairs improved upon.

100 years ago 28 January 1915 Dandenong Train Service THE train service between Dandenong and Melbourne has for some considerable time been altogether inadequate for the requirements of the people residing here, and unfortunately efforts in the past to improve matters, have met with but very slight success. It is difficult to understand why the authorities do not schedule a train service such as the place is entitled to, for representations made in the past go to show that the existing revenue and the growing demands of the station are deserving of a better train service that exists at the present time. Jobs slashed ABOUT half the garden and grounds workers at Sandown Racecourse have accepted voluntary redundancies over the past week. On 15 January the workers found out that Melbourne Racing Club (MRC) would contract out their jobs, as well as those at Caulfield Racecourse, from 1 February. The announcement followed six months of enterprise bargaining agreement (EBA) negotiations and affected 34 workers, about 16 at Sandown. “You feel empty,” one worker told the Journal. “If we lose our jobs, what the hell are we going to do?” Workers’ contracts include a clause banning them from speaking to the media so the Journal is withholding his identity. “We’ve got absolutely zero trust in management. We reckon they’re sneaky and underhanded,” he said. He said the 34 workers were ambushed with voluntary redundancy documents, offering
“If they’re losing money, why are they raising the prize money and why are they putting their hand up for so many races?” Another worker told the Journal that the MRC had offered a zero per cent pay rise over three years during negotiations “which basically equates to a pay cut”. He said the MRC encouraged employees to apply for a job with the contractor. “The pay will be half the money we’re earning now and the conditions won’t be the same,” he said. He said industrial action was likely but the Sandown Australia Day Races would be safe. Australian Workers Union (AWU) Victorian secretary Ben Davis said he would lodge a dispute with Fair Work. An MRC spokesman said the decision followed an 18-month review to tackle rising racing business losses, which topped $6 million per annum in recent years. He said MRC was forced to explore other options because the AWU made unreasonable demands.

It was called late in the afternoon, like 3.30pm,” he said. “If they knew on the Wednesday, they could have had the decency to tell us early in the day. “They had the documents made up, ready to give to us. It takes them more than just the day to put those documents together.” Two workers have given more than 40 years’ service to the track and many more have 20-plus years under their belts. “All this club thinks about is money, not the trauma and stress that they cause,” the worker said. “They’re quoted as saying they’re losing money in the racing industry. “They raised the Caulfield Cup stakes by $1 million and they hold 30 or so races at Sandown each year.

GREATER DANDENONG’S TOP AUSSIES
Power of education ZAKIA Baig received death threats for educating and empowering women in her former home of Pakistan. Today (Monday) she accepted the Leadership Award at the Greater Dandenong Australia Day Awards for her Australian Hazara Women’s Friendship Network. Zakia established the group late in 2012 to help Afghan women find a place in their new home. “I want to show people that these women coming from other countries, refugees, they can be integrated into the mainstream,” she said. “They can be educated. They can be given opportunities.” The Dandenong-based network offers English, computer and learner’s permit classes, plus information sessions to link women with other services. “I’m showing the community that a Hazara woman is as capable of doing things as any other woman,” she said. “Refugees coming from other countries, they are not waste material. “They can be useful, but it takes time and resources and work. “They never get their potential because of cultural differences, because of low self-esteem in the new country. “This is our organisation’s aim -
to bridge Hazara women with other women and to showcase their abilities and capabilities.” Zakia, originally from Quetta, was last year among 14 people from around the world selected to spend five weeks in Geneva, Switzerland, at the United Nations’ Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) Minorities Fellowship Program. “It was worth doing that because at the end we were different people. Really,” she said. “Our eyes and minds were able to look out of the circle, out of the walls we used to live in.” Zakia delivered the inaugural Human Rights Oration at Dandenong Library on 15 December on minorities’ issues and rights. “We have to stand up,” she said. “Knowledge is like a light. If we don’t have knowledge, we are blind.” Her passion for women’s rights first emerged in 1982 when she started a girls’ section in the Student Federation of Hazaras. She followed with a women’s organisation within the Hazara community 10 years later. “I was happy that everybody from my circle, from my family, supported me - especially my husband, my father, my brother,” she said. “Without them it was not possible.
Zakia Baig is a leader within the Hazara community. 132465 “After that, slowly in our community women joined me.” Zakia opened an empowerment centre for women in 2003 in response to growing poverty stemming from killings of Hazara men. “Women had no-one to run the family,” she said. “I tried to help them, because the women started to beg for money. “We had 200 boys, girls and women coming to the centre and the centre had 12 rooms.” But after three years, police advised Zakia that there were threats against her life. She made the decision to close up and flee.
“We could not stay in our country, in our home,” she said. “It wasn’t safe.” She enrolled in a hospitality management diploma course in 2006, 20 years after completing a bachelor degree in political science and English literature. Zakia was 42 when she flew to Australia, settled in Dandenong and enrolled her children in school so they could join her on student visas. “My husband was in Pakistan. He remained there for six years alone,” she said. “He had to finance us, send money. He had a good business over there, an
established life.” Zakia and her children were granted permanent residency in 2012. “It was like there was a mountain over your head and shoulders and then suddenly it gets off and you feel free,” she said. “Now you’re a permanent resident in a safe country. “This is a country where you can breathe freely - no tension, nothing. “No fear of any discrimination. There’s no fear that you are a woman so you can’t go out without a man. “I was very, very relieved and full of energy for my children, full of dreams for my future.”

The council has recognised Merle as a Free Person of the City and a Living Treasure. In 1991 she was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the 1991 Queen’s Birthday Honours List and received the Promotion of Multiculturalism Award at the Victorian Senior of the Year Awards in 2012.

SPRINGVALE stalwart Merle Mitchell is the first person to receive a Greater Dandenong Community Hall of Fame Award. Councillors selected her for the Australia Day honour which is designed to recognise a community member who has shown outstanding and sustained involvement in community life. Merle was born in Dandenong in 1934 and has lived in the municipality for most of her life. She trained as a kindergarten teacher and settled in the developing Sandown Park area in 1961. Limited services prompted Merle to become an active lobbyist. She helped to plan kindergarten facilities across the City of Springvale and establish Sandown Park Primary School. Merle was a steering committee member for the Springvale Community Aid and Advice Bureau (SCAAB) and she’s remained committed to it for more than 25 years. She played a vital role in establishing Springvale Neighbourhood House and the Family Mediation Centre and shaped state and federal social welfare policies through roles with the Victorian and Australian social service councils. New York dance dream By CASEY NEILL CLAUDIA Jenkinson has been dancing she was three years old. The Keysborough 14-yearold’s dedication paid off in spades when she was invited to audition for New York’s prestigious Joffrey Ballet School last year. She was accepted into the four-year full-time contemporary/jazz trainee program ahead of hundreds of other applicants. “I was ecstatic. I cried, I was so happy because I wasn’t expecting it,” she said. “It came as such a surprise, I was just overwhelmed.” “Now that it’s really happening I’m feeling really excited to go over there. “I can’t believe that this opportunity is happening for me.” Claudia flew to the US last week to settle in at her new school. “They’ve had some amazing dancers train there,” she said. “It’s New York and it’s the city of dreams. It’s just an amazing opportunity. It’s the best of the best. “Getting an education’s really important to me also because I like school so I’ll be doing online schooling. “I love English studies so I’d love to do something like that and I also love teaching so maybe teaching dance.” But her main goals for now revolve around her love of dance and choreography. “I’d love to be on Broadway or be a back-up dancer or something,” she said. “I’m going to Joffrey to im-

IN BRIEF Arson blaze threat appeal THREE deliberately-lit fires have sparked a police call for witnesses. Flames engulfed a bungalow on a property in Lee Street, Springvale, about 10.30pm on 19 January. No-one was injured. Arsonists started a fire near a rubbish bin room at the rear of Dandenong Plaza on Lonsdale Street about 3pm on 18 January. And vandals pushed clothing up against a timber fence and set it alight in Charles Street, Dandenong, about 5.30pm on 19 January.

GREATER Dandenong police are appealing for information about two armed robberies. A man produced a weapon at a TattsLotto outlet on Princes Highway, Springvale, about 11.30am on 17 January, demanded cash from staff and fled with a small amount of money. And a group of men sprayed an adolescent with pepper spray and robbed him on Gladstone Road, Dandenong North, about 10.30pm on 15 January. Information to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

NOT many mums get to deliver their own baby, but that’s exactly what Kylie Szabo did when she pulled tiny Emma Lee out of her own stomach and into the world. Having endured two emergency caesareans with her older children, she didn’t want to repeat the experience which can be traumatic for both mum and bub. She had hoped to deliver Emma Lee naturally but, after a fortnight of pre-labour pain, she elected to have a maternal assisted caesarean. Doctors at Dandenong Hospital and midwife Amy Gillies were happy to assist with the unusual delivery on 15 January. “My doctor was open to the idea of a maternal caesar but couldn’t guarantee that the theatre staff would be willing to go ahead with it,” said the Mulgrave mum. “They may have been reluctant given the high risk of infection, though I had spoken to my doctor and we had both made plans to minimise the risk,“ Kylie said. The birth was a first for the hospital and for Kylie’s doctor, who had witnessed maternal assisted caesareans while training in Sydney but had never participated in one. Kylie said the unusual delivery created an incredible bond between her and her new daughter. “As I was pulling her out I could feel myself swell with tears. I was really doing this, I

Dandenong Hospital for their caring and professional approach. “Everyone showed me such kindness and was very concerned with making sure I felt safe. “I would encourage anyone who needs to have a caesarean to consider doing it maternally.”

THE five potential names for Dandenong’s new Civic Square are in and out for public comment. Harmony Square, International Square, Opportunity Square, Welcome Square and Wurundjeri Square made the cut after the City of Greater Dandenong received more than 160 responses to its callout last year. Mayor Sean O’Reilly and councillors compiled the shortlist in line with strict Office of Geographic Names Victoria guidelines.

The space on the corner of Lonsdale and Walker streets officially opened last April. It’s been dubbed the Federation Square of the south east, mostly for the seven-metre wide digital screen that will host locally produced film content and shared content from further afield. WORK is now easier at the Keysmen Men’s Shed thanks to a community grant. Keysborough Learning Centre (KLC) installed new height adjustable work benches in the shed late last year using a $3516 Slater and Gordon Community Fund grant. KLC general manager Neil Cooper said the funding covered four benches but the group found room for and purchased a fifth. Chairman John Heynes said in KLC’s annual report that the Keysmen members’ help with maintenance had shown immeasurable support in the smooth operation of KLC activities. He said the shed provided a place for men to enjoy social activities, learn new skills and discuss men’s business. “It has also been a place of meeting and activity for men seeking asylum and they are most welcome,” Mr Heynes

Mosaic bubbles up By CASEY NEILL BUBBLES of Happiness now adorns the Dandenong Primary School Community Hub. Parents worked on the mosaic project throughout last year and celebrated its completion on 15 December. The school choir performed Happy by singer Pharrell Williams and other students blew bubbles before the mosaics were unveiled. The largest bears the school logo and they’re at the end of the building housing the Community Hub. It opened at the school last January thanks to Scanlon Foundation funding and hosts activities, educa-
tional programs including literacy for children and preschool song and dance, a prep transition program and wheelbarrow competition. Student well-being officer Kelly Finch and Community Hub co-ordinator Alison Rogers oversee the programs. Ms Rogers said Dandenong Primary School was continually working towards providing an enhancing learning environment for students and a welcoming place for parents. “Vegie, herb, indigenous and sensory gardens, mosaics and musical walls all add to create a peaceful and fun space,” she said. Dandenong Neighbourhood House provided a tutor and materials for the mosaic project.

IT’S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS BUT…
NEW Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams rolled up her sleeves last week and gave blood. The regular donor pumped out her universal O-negative blood at St Mary's Community Centre in Dandenong because one in three people need blood during their lifetime but only one in 30 people donate. The Journal has spoken to Ms Williams about her post-election plans and what makes her tick, and will publish the chat in coming weeks. BAA the sheep owner Vu Ho is threatening to take City of Greater Dandenong to court again - though over what, we’re not sure. The council investigated complaints about a car parked in a busy Springvale street for several weeks, chalk marked it and checked back two months later to find it unmoved. Officers placed a notice on the windscreen asking the owner to move the car or explain its position. The car belongs to Mr Ho’s son who is overseas. Mr Ho told the Journal he’d take the matter to the Supreme Court if the council seized the vehicle. But Mr Ho has since moved the car so the council says there is no issue - there won’t be a fine and they won’t seize the car and they’ve told Mr Ho exactly that. A decision over his $200,000-plus legal bill from his battle to keep Baa the sheep is due in the coming months. SPRINGVALE South residents are on the lookout for a prowler who was seen peering into a home near Andleon Way and Vistilla Court late last year. He’s described as tall and lanky, aged about 50 and was wearing a flannelette shirt or lumber jacket and a baseball cap - matching the description of a man previously noticed acting suspiciously in Keysborough. Greater Dandenong Neighbourhood Watch urged anyone who noticed suspicious activity to note car registration numbers or take a photograph if safe to do so. INTERNATIONALLY-renowned tenor Bradley Daley took time out from his busy schedule to entertain residents, staff and friends at TLC Aged Care in Noble Park and Hallam. He performed opera classics and popular songs and shared anecdotes from his 20plus years in opera. “Many of our residents are unable to attend opera performances, so we are very proud to be able to bring a performer of Bradley’s stature to our homes,” TLC CEO Lou Pascuzzi said.

ENJOY YOUR PLACE BY THE LAKE demand, Brad said: “purchasers recognise that this is an established area which has traditionally been tightly held and commands strong resale values.” Water Edge is surrounded by excellent schools including Haileybury, St Francis Xavier, and Nossal selective government high school and is close to the freeway, train station and Berwick village. Local land prices typically exceed $300,000.
The final release of home sites with front-row water views is now selling at Water Edge, Narre Warren South. “There just won’t be another opportunity to secure such a prestige waterfront address,” said Brad Ryan of local agents Harcourts. Water Edge is a boutique development and 50 of its 80 home sites have been sold in less than 12 months. Asked why there has been such strong
“Many people also consider that the Narre Warren South postcode provides them with a superior long-term investment compared with property in the less established areas of Clyde and Cranbourne North,” Brad said. Water Edge incorporates a range of environmentally sustainable features including energy-efficient street lighting, recycled water and optimum solar orientation of home sites. A high-speed fibre optic network provides
residents with next-generation superfast broadband services. More than 60 per cent of the site has been dedicated to wetlands and open space. Land at Water Edge is currently selling from $198,900. SEA CHANGE IS BECKONING FOR MANY IN HEIGHT OF THE SUMMER SEASON With students returning to school and many of us back at work this week, readjusting can prompt thoughts of buying a holiday home - or even moving permanently to the coast or the country. This can be a good investment and, with research and planning, can open future options. These can include swapping with other holiday home owners to vary the destination, relocating or retiring there in future and even a long-term sea change or tree change. Every summer real estate agents experience the results of this longing for an endless holiday lifestyle. For agents in coastal
towns summer is a seven-day-aweek frenzy, with January accounting for a considerable part of their agencies’ annual turnover. And the rush can last until Easter. In towns such as Warrnambool, along the Gippsland coast and on Phillip Island, the Mornington Peninsula and along the Great Ocean Road, agents show properties to holidaymakers facing that drive to the office, packed trains and weekends mowing the lawns. Agents in inland towns such as Bright are also busy, with buyers taking advantage of fine weather to shop for a rural retreat. While most search the internet for
a property, holidaymakers have the time to browse in agency windows and view properties. It is a time when it is easy to buy with the heart, not the head. But holiday home purchases should be treated like any other house purchase, resting on a foundation of solid research with sound fundamentals. It is important that a gorgeous view or peaceful location does not detract from those fundamentals. Is the Section 32 in order? Is the property sound? Has the contract been checked thoroughly? What is planned for nearby blocks and are there any road or major infrastructure projects
planned nearby? Agents must be aware of restrictions on development limiting what can be done with that fibro holiday shack on a large block and should give you this advice. But to be sure, ask whether or not you can develop the property as this will also have a bearing on its value. It is also important to check whether a rural property - or even one in a regional town or an outer Melbourne suburb - is deemed bushfire-prone. What work is needed to have the home and surrounds meet the recommended bushfire safety standards?

Step up to our award winning Milan, voted HIA’s Best Display Home 2014.* The Milan 29 from our Aspire range has just won the 2014 HIA Victorian division Best Display Home between $250,001 – 300,000. It’s an architect designed home ofering afordable luxury, space and light and a range of innovative features. The sun court, for instance, actually increases the usable interior space and floods the living areas with light. Or as the judges said: “A very open home that gives the impression it is bigger than it actually is.
“Excellent workmanship, attention to detail and a feeling of spaciousness.” – HIA Judges
You can sense the diference immediately with generously proportioned spaces that flow together naturally to create vistas and extended views with picture windows usually only found in more expensive homes. The high level of luxury inclusions also caught the eye of the judges who said the Caesarstone benches, Franke sinks and Smeg appliances “represent value for money”. The overall style and elegance of this four bedroom home is typified by the raised ceiling above the dining area. Visit the Milan today – and judge for yourself.

A SIMPLE shed might not seem worth celebrating. But for Shalimar Park Kindergarten in Dandenong North it took five years of fund-raising to make the storage space a reality. “We’ve had quite a few committee members come and go over the years who have been working towards this shed, Bronwyn Jarvis said. “The whole idea of the shed
was to give the teachers and the kids more room for their equipment and also to give a safe environment for the children to help themselves and to take what they want out and play with it. Ms Jarvis said the former storage space was difficult for teachers to supervise and too small. The new area contains shelves and will also become an art feature. “We have been in contact
with an artist who works in Dandenong with some youths and we’ve been given a quote to put together an indigenous mural, Ms Jarvis said. “It was out of our budget so we’ll have to bring it to the committee this year. “We want it to feature hand prints from the kids as well. About 110 families have children enrolled in the three and four-year-old kinder classes at the centre.

KNOW YOUR GRASSFIRE RISK THIS SUMMER If you live near open grassland, parks, paddocks or reserves, you could be impacted by grassfire.
IT’S UP TO YOU TO KNOW WHAT TO DO IF A FIRE STARTS. DO YOU LIVE ONE OR TWO STREETS AWAY FROM GRASSLAND? Stay inside your home – grassfires are unlikely to spread past the first row of houses Keep the roads clear so emergency services can respond
DO YOU LIVE ON A FENCELINE NEXT TO GRASSLAND? If a fire starts, quickly move one or two streets away from the fenceline or park boundary Act early, even if you haven’t received a warning Keep the roads clear so emergency services can respond
Remember, it’s up to you to monitor weather conditions and warnings. Always keep an eye on the conditions outside - you may be aware of a fire before emergency services. If you see smoke or flames, call Triple Zero (000).

AT the Victorian School of Performing Arts (VSPA) an appreciation of good music and theatre is an unmistakable sign of culture. This is why the school offers and presents every opportunity for the students to develop and grow into the best performers they possibly can. Located at St Margaret’s School, Berwick, VSPA is delivered and administered by fully qualified, professional classroom, instrumental, vocal and drama specialists. The comprehensive programs aim to ‘inspire a sense of the extraordinary’ in everything we do from daily lessons and specialist recitals to grand concerts, produc-

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST
Pair have awards sewn up By CASEY NEILL THE two people from the business world recognised in the Greater Dandenong Australia Day Awards couldn’t be more different. Jayco owner Gerry Ryan received the Corporate Citizen of the Year title, 40 years to the month since he started what would become Australia’s largest recreational vehicles manufacturer. And Abuk Bol received an Encouragement Award in the category, 10 years after arriving in Australia with no English skills. Today she helps other women from Sudan gain skills and find work to become self-sufficient. “Abuk demonstrates the qualities of perseverance, determination, innovation and resilience in the way she now assists others to enrich their own lives,” the awards judges said. The Noble Park woman had sewing skills but couldn’t find a job in her new home without formal qualifications. The 39-year-old completed her studies, then led a small group from the Twich community of South Sudan to establish the Twich Women’s Sewing
GREATER DANDENONG’S TOP AUSSIES Collective. The not-for-profit organisation provides training in retail and manufacturing, including certificate three in clothing production in association with RMIT University. “Even if you don’t get a certificate, you will know to how to use the sewing machines,” Abuk said. Jayco today employs 1000 people in Dandenong South - a long way from the eight people Gerry had making one camper trailer a day in 1975. But it wasn’t just for this effort that he received the Australia Day honour. The judges said Gerry was a well-known corporate figure in Greater Dandenong. “As well as being a strong corporate sponsor of local sporting groups such as the Dandenong Jayco Rangers, Gerry uses his skills and influence to provide opportunities for others to grow through work and training and is a passionate patron of the arts, sports and the wider local community,” they said. Gerry told the Journal that

ployed local people but supported local suppliers wherever possible and backed the Dandenong Rangers Women’s National Basketball League team. Gerry was the Visy Care Centre’s founding chairman “many years ago, back in the ’90s”. The Dandenong centre
provides services and activities for 12 to 25-year-olds. He said it was the responsibility of all businesses to give back to the community. “The community is where our employees come from, our suppliers and our customers,” he said. Gerry’s company Global
Creatures has staged Walking with Dinosaurs, King Kong and Strictly Ballroom the Musical. He put up $150,000 to build the first animatronic dinosaur prototype in the Springvale Scout Hall. Gerry owns Australia’s first world circuit cycling team Orica-Green Edge. He’s developing industrial properties around Dandenong, plans to revamp his winery in Nagambie and his next move is into Willy Wonka territory. “I’m going into chocolates next. We’re going to build a chocolate factory at Mitchelton Winery as a tourist attraction. That’s starting in May,” he said. In 2011 Gerry was included in the Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame Honour Roll, a nod reserved for individuals or organisations that have made an outstanding contribution to manufacturing excellence in Victoria. “It’s all about having good people and people that share the same vision and passion as you do,” he said. “I’ve very proud to say I’m committed to Dandenong. Over the past 40 years it’s meant a lot to me.”
Metal manufacturer beats path back home to quality China to do the deal of the century. “We’re probably stealing market share from people who are still totally reliant on imported product.” Mr Gallagher is about to build a new 800 square metre facility across the road and Mr Villante, based next door, is putting Australia’s equal largest extrusion press on the land - a $60 million investment. “You swim against the tide - whatever they do, do the reverse.” He said Aluminium Industries was among the first businesses to establish relationships in China but things didn’t go smoothly. “It’s like eBay - if you get 80 per cent of what you really want you’re happy,” he said.
After celebrating its 60th birthday in 2014, the Victorian Caravan, Camping & Touring Supershow is on the move in 2015 from Caulfield Racecourse to our new home at Melbourne Showgrounds from February 11 to 16. Presented by the Caravan Industry Association Victoria (CIA VIC), the move marks the dawn of a new era for Australia’s biggest outdoors show with even more of the latest and greatest caravans, camping gear and outdoors accessories on display than was previously possible. The size of the new venue will truly make the 2015 Supershow the biggest yet. The additional space will also enhance the show experience for patrons with extra food outlets and rest areas, an abundance of entertainment, product demonstrations and seminars at the Supershow. There will be something to enjoy for every member of the family with fantastic prizes to be won, free show bags, fishing, the Yamaha Super tank, cooking
component supplier since its beginnings in 1996, and employs about 110 people. “There’s a great sense of nervous energy around this business. We don’t take anything for granted. “If you haven’t got that nervous energy you get complacent,” Mr Gallagher said. Committee for Dandenong launched the Great Southern Manufacturing - Making it Great ... in Dandenong project last November to correct public perceptions of the industry. Successful companies will share their stories through video, digital media and advertising. Visit makingitgreat. com.au to get involved. - CASEY NEILL
demonstrations and much more. For the kids, Tammy the Tent and Corey the Caravan from the Caravanning Explorer’s Club will provide plenty of fun and amusement. Readers, here is your chance to win two tickets to the Victorian Caravan, Camping & Touring Supershow. We are offering 50 readers the chance to win two tickets to the Victorian Caravan, Camping & Touring Supershow, which runs from Weds 11th February to Monday 16th February 2015.

“It’s one thing to have a low cost, but it’s a different thing to have better value. “I felt that either we were very unlucky, in terms that we’d picked the wrong relationships, or everyone’s got the same problem and I think the latter is the case. “We’d have less than 10 per cent of our product now come from China. “China is not the answer. It’s part of the equation but it’s not the answer. “Being in proximity to our customers means that it’s far quicker, quality’s much easier to control, communication’s so much easier, the financial side is easier, the logistical side is easier.” Aluminium Industries has changed from a metal supplier to a product and

SWIM against the tide is Aluminium Industries managing director Jim Gallagher’s top piece of advice. And he seems to know what he’s talking about his Dandenong South business is growing while “the rest of the market is stagnant”. “About eight years ago, we took the decision to migrate back to Australia,” he said. Extruded Products Australia founder John Villante was investing in new extrusion presses in Australia and Mr Gallagher joined him. “It was totally countermarket,” he said. “Everyone else was still putting a Hawaiian shirt on and jumping on a plane to

It’s the Panther powerhouse By JARROD POTTER THE PRIDE of the Panthers were on display Thursday night as 12 elite Dandenong Cricket Club players were inducted into the club’s 25-Year Team. Waverley Cricket Club moved to Shepley Oval in 1989/90 and merged with the Sub-District Dandenong side to form Waverley-Dandenong Cricket Club. Ever since the club has been a powerhouse in Victorian Premier Cricket, winning two District flags in 2006/07 and 2010/11 as well as helping cultivate the careers of three Test cricketers - Darren Pattinson, James Pattinson and Peter Siddle - along with a Oneday International all-round expert - Ian Harvey. A power-packed team was the only fitting way to cap off 25 years in Victorian Premier Cricket as the club announced the team of the quartercentury, captained by Premier Cricket leading run-scorer Warren Ayres. At Ayres side are a plethora of starring batsmen as current openers Tom Donnell and Brett Forsyth, club record holder Rob Bartlett, club runs record holder Tim Hooper and Ian Harvey round out the top of the order. The bowlers are just as quick and fearsome as the Pattinsons - Darren and James - lead the attack, while Peter Siddle, Harvey and Matthew Lawrence round out an impressive five-man arsenal. It wasn’t just the players who were recognised for their achievements in the club’s quarter of a century at Shepley Oval, with administrators, coaches and staff also acknowledged for their tireless work behind the scenes. Long-time 1st and 2nd’s captains and club coaches Brendan McArdle and Ayres were honoured as co-coach-

in that sort of thing and in some small part I hopefully helped some of those guys get to where they were.” Darren Pattinson was also honoured for his achievements with the club while Siddle was presented with his induction into Cricket Victoria’s 200 Club for players who have notched 200 matches at Test, First Class or Premier 1st XI level. “I think it’s been a great night, everyone’s enjoyed themselves, the speakers we’ve had here have put on some exceptional entertainment and
DANDENONG 25-YEAR XI TEAM the team that we’ve announced could compete very well with some of the international sides we’ve seen in the past,” Dandenong president Michael Findlay said. “25 years here and I think we’ve lived in a very lucky time for Dandenong.” It will be one of the last official functions of Dandenong Cricket Club as a standalone entity, as the Panthers will merge with Hawthorn-Monash University next season to become Dandenong-Hawthorn Cricket Club.

Kelly Applebee honoured By JARROD POTTER WHETHER she has donned the Dandenong blues, or is representing Victoria, there is no better sporting role model in Dandenong than Lions’ skipper Kelly Applebee. Applebee, 32, was named the City of Greater Dandenong’s Sportsperson of the Year in a ceremony to be held on Monday afternoon. The talented cricketing allrounder was named Sportsperson of the Year on the back of her exceptional season with the Victorian Women’s Cricket Team - VicSpirit and another run-filled year representing Dandenong Lions in the VWCA/Victorian Women’s Premier Cricket competition. “I was actually quite surprised when I got the phone call to say I was nominated and being awarded,” Applebee said. “You obviously don’t go around doing things for your club Victorian and Dandenong Cricket Club champion Kelly Applebee was named the city’s and your community thinking Sportsperson of the Year for her exceptional work on and off the field. 133485 about those types of awards, but Picture: CRICKET VICTORIA it’s definitely nice to be honoured
in that way.” The award doesn’t just recognise Applebee’s nous at the crease and in the centre, with the talented all-rounder also a devoted coach and teacher for the next generation of Dandenong Lions coming through the ranks at Greaves Reserve. The current Dandenong Lions’ WCC president is also the club captain and coach and has worked tirelessly to promote women’s sport in local schools, especially in encouraging multicultural communities to get involved in local sporting clubs and activities. Her outreach for the next generation mirrors the help she was given as a fresh faced Lion arriving from Gippsland and is proud to continue that tradition and help the younger Lions flourish. “The club (Dandenong) has always been fantastic to me,” Applebee said. “Coming from East Gippsland to play cricket, in terms of that transition it was
made easier by those people who were there at the time. “I’m extremely grateful for that - it’s more than a cricket club it’s a family and I am more than happy I’m able to give back to the club like many have done before me. “Seeing the young kids coming through is something I’m passionate about and helping develop women’s cricket in the Dandenong area is something I’m very proud of.” Applebee is one of the experienced members of the VicSpirit side, having represented the state in 108 one-day domestic matches and has also played for the Australian under-23 team. She also went past a major WNCL milestone this season notching her 2000th run for the VicSpirit. The City of Greater Dandenong’s Australia Day award winners will be recognised and celebrated during a special awards ceremony today (Australia Day) at the Drum Theatre from 2pm.

SPORT WNBL - Round 14
Taylor-made outset By JARROD POTTER WHILE the margin was massive, the context of Dandenong’s 95-64 win over Adelaide should not be undervalued. Dandenong had the ball on a string from the get-go, charging out to a 28-8 lead at the first change following an early onslaught from Penny Taylor (15 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists). With chief play-caller Kathleen Macleod still a few weeks off returning from a knee injury, her absence gave plenty of opportunity for Endeavour Hills-based guard Aimie Clydesdale (13 points, 7 assists) to step up and show off her potential. Clydesdale has made a seamless move from bench to starter in the last couple of rounds, as she proved again on Friday night she is a star on the rise in the midst of a breakout WNBL season. In tandem with superstars Taylor and Cappie Pondexter (8 points, 10 rebounds) - Clydesdale ran the ball for 32 minutes on Friday night and almost snared a double-double as the Rangers started to rack up the points. A 30-point half-time lead threatened to decimate the Lightning even further - as the Adelaide-based club seeks a new owner to ensure its survival - but to their credit, the visitors stopped a complete blowout emerging in the second half. The likes of Laura Hodges (13 points, 9 rebounds) and Jenny Screen (10 points, 11 rebounds) valiantly held on to keep the margin near the half-time deficit, as Rangers’ coach Mark Wright went to the bench and tested a number of different strategies - including a ‘tall-ball’
Penny Taylor charges to the rack in Dandenong’s 95-64 Friday-evening win over Adelaide. 133442 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS variant with Taylor running the ball. Also impressing for Dandenong in the runaway victory was Annalise Pickrel (19 points, 4 rebounds) - who was freed up from her usual centre post on Friday night to attack the wings as she drilled two threepointers and went at over 50 per cent from the field. Tegan Cunningham (11 points, 7 rebounds) impressed off the bench as per usual, as she continues to dominate the ‘sixth-
man’ position in the Rangers’ roster. “Adelaide still showed that they have a lot of fight, even though they were down it didn’t feel like they were out of it,” Wright said. “I think you give credit to Adelaide, not one stage did they stop going hard. “It’s hard to be up by 30 and keep the same intensity up, but we held and didn’t go backwards which was
really important… we got to play our bench and rest our starters towards the end, so it was good all round.” Dandenong sits third on the WNBL ladder - two games clear of the three-way battle for fourth between Sydney Uni, Canberra and Melbourne - and will hope to maintain that buffer with a win over West Coast at home in the ABC Match of the Week, on Saturday afternoon from 3pm.
Marinko magic THE fifth time was the charm for Dandenong North’s Marinko Matosevic, who claimed his first Australian Open win in a five-set epic. Matosevic, 29, has perennially faced a first-round exit from the grand slam events, but has started to power through the draws and earn his place among the world’s top100 players after earning second-round berths at the French Open and Wimbledon last year. Monday night would tip the tables further in Matosevic’s favour after breaking his Australian Open hoodoo. The world number 81 ensured his firstround form would continue at the first Grand Slam of 2015, as Matosevic rallied to push aside Russian Alexander Kudryavtsev in a comeback triumph that sent the crowd ballistic. Winning the first set, before dropping the next two, Matosevic smashed through 16 winners to put the Russian on the back foot as he claimed the fourth set 7-5 to level the match. Earning a match-defining break in the fifth set at 4-3, Matosevic served the final game and when his match-point winning forehand cross-court shot was smashed into the net, the Australian collapsed on the ground in pure joy after finally winning his first match at his hometown Open. The Dandenong dynamo’s Australian Open run was not fated to last much longer, as it came to an end on Wednesday afternoon. Facing world number six and reigning Olympic gold medallist Andy Murray, the Brit made light work of Matosevic 1-6, 3-6, 2-6 on Margaret Court Arena in the straight sets victory.
Fabio certainly no slow Bro By MICHAEL FLOYD POPULAR young trainer Brooke Ennis landed four winners on Thursday evening at Sandown Park, including both Listed feature events. Lady Toy took out the night’s opening feature, the Listed Maidment Memorial (595m), with an impressive railing effort in 34.13. A renowned slow beginner, Lady began relatively well to assume a rails position behind early leader Come On Fantasy. Lady Toy held her position and displayed an impressive turn of foot down the back straight, to claim a powerful four-length victory. Lady Toy, or ‘Lucy’ as she’s known at home, only arrived in Ennis’s ken-
nel over the weekend but hasn’t taken long to make an impression on her new trainer. “I think she probably misses Jim (her owner) a little bit but she’s settled in well.” said Ennis. “I didn’t expect her to win tonight, the 595m is a bit short of her preferred distance, but she jumped well and put herself in a good spot.” “We actually nominated for a 715m race but there weren’t enough nominations for a race to go ahead. “She’s going to Perth with My Bro Fabio, Deadly Vane and Blinker’s On… we wanted them all to have the same preparation going into their respective series (Perth Cup and Gal-
axy), so rather than have her miss out on a run we thought we’d put her in (over 595m). It worked out well.” In the night’s second feature, My Bro Fabio reminded all why he is regarded as one of the most exciting greyhounds in the country with a stunning last-to-first victory in the Listed Australian Sprint. Despite a tardy getaway, My Bro Fabio enjoyed a clear run through the first turn before unleashing a devastating burst down the back straight to sweep around his high-class rivals and storm to a one and one-half-length victory in a slick 29.27. Kennelmate Dream It held on for My Bro Fabio earned a big hug from trainer Brooke Ennis after a superb winning run in the Listed Australian Sprint. 133590 Picture: SUPPLIED second, giving Ennis the quinella.

Thunderbolts zap Swans By JARROD POTTER A CAVALCADE of Test players took Casey Fields by storm on Saturday as Casey-South Melbourne (9/308) took first day honours despite the best efforts of Dandenong and their Test match front-line attack. James Pattinson (0/41) took the new rock and was lethal against the Casey-South Melbourne top order, with a number of his 140-kilometre thunderbolts. After his first ball - finding Josh Holden’s (13) edge to Peter Sweeney, Siddle also struggled to make in-roads against a dogged Swans’ batting order. It brought to the crease Casey’s Test match spearhead - wicketkeeper-batsman Matthew Wade (61). Wade saw off the worst of Pattinson and Siddle and reversed the fortunes in a stellar 126-run partnership with Lachie Sperling (68). The wickets would finally come as Dan Doran (4/75) and James Wilcock (2/41) picked off middle or-
der scalps, including the important scalp of Wade as he edged Wilcock through to David Alleyne behind the pegs, while Sperling holed out to Sri Lankan Test opener Kaushal Silva off Doran. The young Swans flew highest as Sperling and former Tooradin batsman Ryan Eaton (74) took the starstudded Panthers to the cleaners. Eaton notched another half-ton partnership for the Swans in tandem with Shane Maggs (10) before the tail wagged hard as keeper Devin Pollock (27 not out) and Simon Black (20) pushed the tally to 308 by day’s end. Casey batted through to stumps and has the tough choice whether or not to declare over the weekend and set Dandenong a terrifying triplecentury chase on Saturday. Kooweerup rising star Adam McMaster (1/42) made his two-day Premier debut over the weekend as he stormed in and claimed his first wicket - Casey captain Chris Hall in his 10 overs.

Bulls’ finals dreams get Splatt-ered WHETHER Eagle or Bull, the result was the same on a tough day in the field for the home sides. In a re-match of last year’s grand final, Noble Park was put to the sword by Oakleigh (253) as Andrew Splatt, held together the order in a textbook rear-guard halfcentury. Playing with a point to prove grand final revenge and honouring Ben Pinwill in his 300th match, Oakleigh fought throughout the order to put the pressure back on the Bulls. Carrying on the strong work of the top order, pushing the tally past triple figures, Andrew Splatt, Chris Williamson (27) and Michael Splatt (34) notched back-to-back 50-run stands to leave Noble Park without much to smile about. Spinner Rob Johnston (6/65) was the exception to Noble Park’s woes, as the spinner notched 23 overs and earned his first five-wicket haul of the season. Also standing up to rattle off the overs in the heat were Marasinghe Perera (1/56) and Ash Perera (0/32). It leaves the Bulls with a staggering chase on Saturday - which could prove the difference in the race for finals as Noble Park

Outright, outright… and outright
IT WAS bleak at ground level for the Dandenong Lions (8/93) as they slumped against the rampaging Box Hill Mustangs (1/128cc). The Lions struggled to make headway into the Box Hill order, as Rebecca Carter (61) picked up where her Mustangs team mate and Australian captain Meg Lanning usually starts off. Carter belted half-a-dozen boundaries and a whopping six at Greaves Reserve to issue the challenge to the home side. Carter and Sarah Chancellor-Goddard (35 not out)
cashed in to put on 77 for the second stand and finish unbeaten, leaving a tricky 129run chase for the Lions. Emma Gallagher (0/17) and Primrose Wohlers (0/17) returning from State under-18 representative duties - were the best of the Lions’ bowling attack. A strong start from Erica Kershaw (21) - off only nine balls - was ended by Danielle Montague (2/4), leaving the heaving lifting to Chelsea Moscript (21) and Alana King (17). The young Lions pushed the tempo along, but struggled to hit the bad ball for boundaries.
Moscript’s gutsy knock would finally end on 21 as she holed out off Madeleine Clayton (1/10), triggering another collapse as the side fell from 2/37, when King fell, to 6/60. The last innings of notable resistance came from Wohlers (16 not out) who held on to ensure Dandenong batted out its overs and made an attempt at the win. In the second match, Dandenong’s (3/117) 2nd XI was also bested by Box Hill (3/121), despite the best efforts of captain Carin Eastburn (55 not out). Eastburn has taken her season tally to 568 runs at 81.1 in a sensational season so far.
IN A day of DDCA carnage, maximum points were seized by Springvale South, North Dandenong and Heinz Southern Districts. COOMOORA v HEINZ SOUTHERN DISTRICTS SOLID Coomoora (142 and 159) sadly was not enough to earn the Kangaroos its first points of the season as Heinz Southern Districts (7/175dec and 5/128) did enough to take the chocolates. Adam Semmens (49) started the rapid chase before Michael Davies (38) and Brent Patterson (31 not out) charged ahead with declaration in mind. Saliya Saman (2/30) was impressive for the visitors off his 21.2 overs. Saman (61) would back it up with the bat as he proved the only resistance to Heinz - namely master spinner Paul Stockdale (5/59). Needing more than eight-an-over to take the outright, Heinz Southern Districts absolutely flayed the Kangaroos in the second innings - smashing 128 in 15.3 overs. Striking faster and harder than their namesake animal, the Cobras played hit-and-run cricket to take the points. Davies (35 not out), Trevor Davies (18 not out), Justin Davis (23) and Stockdale (23) hit the suitcase out of anything Coomoora pitched up. It pushes the Cobras up to fifth before hosting Berwick while Coomoora remains in the relegation zone as it heads to Hallam Kalora Park. BERWICK v PARKFIELD WITH hearts and minds firmly locked elsewhere, Berwick (79 and 2/125) was no match for Parkfield (183). Mourning the passing of perennial club supporter Bill Crawford - father of Berwick all-rounder Ryan - the mood at Arch Brown Reserve was sombre, but with Crawford a firm believer in the game carrying on no matter what, Berwick took to the field to respect the wishes of the departed DDCA legend. In the battle of the Bears, Parkfield emerged triumphant as young spinner Travis D’Souza (7/30) rattled through Berwick at a rapid rate. D’Souza’s 15.3 overs beguiled Berwick and he ran through the home side en route to his best DDCA figures. Berwick (2/125) fared much better in the second innings, going the tonk to erase the outright deficit and thump out the remaining 21 overs. Third place Berwick will head to Heinz Southern Districts with a spot in the top-four on the line while Parkfield moves up to eighth and remains an outside chance of playing finals, needing to impress this week against top-of-the-ladder Cranbourne at home. MORDIALLOC v LYNDALE ESCAPING by a whisker, Mordialloc (8/179) scraped over the line against Lyndale (173). On a rare occasion in recent history, the Bloodhounds’ top order fell over under pressure from Dale Tormey (2/53) and Ricky Foulstone (1/29). Quyen Pham (3/38) carried on the relentless attack, but Mordialloc finally found some strength through Damith Ralalage (53) and captain Chathura Athukorala (39). Cameron Tomkinson (29 not out) finished the job to keep Mordialloc in the top four before its clash against Buckley Ridges while Lyndale remains anchored near the bottom in 11th as it hosts Springvale South. NORTH DANDENONG v BUCKLEY RIDGES ONE of the two outright victories this week belonged to the Lois Twohig Reserve brigade as North Dandenong (139) powered through Buckley Ridges (60 and 58) twice. Barely adding to their overnight tally at 8/125, North Dandenong instead chose to rip apart the Ridges with the ball as only 21.3 overs were needed for outright triumph. Jurgen Andersen (3/8) and Liam Dudding (3/12) were sensational in skittling the visitors, as returning Buckley Ridges champion Shane D’Rozario (11) top-scored in the second innings. Boosted by the outright, North Dandenong bounces up to seventh ahead of its clash with Dandenong West while Buckley Ridges hosts Mordialloc. SPRINGVALE SOUTH v DANDENONG WEST SIGNALLING clear intent to return to the final match of the season, Springvale South (5/118dec and 2/92) cantered past Dandenong West (95 and 114) for maximum points. Ash Stephens (25) and Andrew Harry (38) resisted the Bloods’ onslaught - especially Harry who belted five fours and two sixes at Harold Road - but their efforts would pale compared to the home side. Nathan King (4/9) and Yoshan Kumara (3/27) slashed through the Bulls’ order to leave a sub-100 tally for an outright victory with plenty of time remaining in the day. That job would be taken up by Kumara (36 not out) and Jarrod Armitage (18) - promoted to get some time at the crease - with Steve Masterson (28 not out) holding up the other end in his usual stoic manner. The Bloods sit four points off the lead on the Turf 1 ladder before clashing with Lyndale away.
