■ A passion for paramedic work has seen communication chief rewarded...
Signal service By LACHLAN MOORHEAD FOR most of his 25 years working for Ambulance Victoria, Ralph Casey was only ever a phone call away. The Endeavour Hills father remembered being called to an emergency in the middle of Christmas lunch several years ago and reported quickly for duty. This ceaseless dedication to the organisation for two and a half decades will see Ralph, 61, awarded with an Ambulance Service medal today (Monday) during the nation’s Australia Day celebrations. Now on long service leave and nearing retirement, Ralph spoke about his career with open nostalgia. “It’s far beyond what I thought it would be, I had a lot of passion for it,” he said. “It’s great to have the recognition of people who support paramedics on the frontline. “Often they are the quiet achievers.” Throughout his career, as the Manager of Technical Services, Ralph has been instrumental in providing communications support to Ambulance Victoria. The Field Services Team leader has been responsible for aircraft communications, motorcycle automatic vehicle location technology, radio communications for ambulance dispatching and IT for major events. “I was quite shocked and humbled that some of the other paramedics had nominated me for this,” Ralph said, referring to the service medal. “I was just flabbergasted, I couldn’t think of a better way to finish my career.” Ralph was instrumental in enhancing Ambulance Victoria’s analogue radio capability, helping to develop a crucial inter-operability between different emergency services in the state.
And he often gave invaluable assistance to paramedics on the front lines. “Several times I went out with paramedics on the road and I went on a couple shifts on the helicopter, working at the coal face,” Ralph said. “When you’re with those guys you realise how they do such an exceptional job.” Ralph recalled an incident which for him encapsulated the importance of the job he had committed his life to. “One day I did a shift on the helicopter when we attended a man who was severely injured, and we saved his life,” he said. “I tended there with a MICA paramedic, assisting and pumping blood back into his system and transporting him back to The Alfred. “He was hurt, critically injured, and we helped him survive - that’s something that really sticks in my mind.” During most of his 25 years Ralph was on call 24/7. His wife, Christine, and daughters Rachel and Tiffany shared their husband and father selflessly with Ambulance Victoria, buoyed by his passion for the job. But now with one eye on retirement, Ralph, originally born near Dubbo in New South Wales, is excited to soon finally have the opportunity to travel freely. Along with his brothers Howard and Peter, Ralph has planned to return to his home town, a place he hasn’t seen in 40 years. “Retirement is when you stop living at work and start working at living,” Ralph said.

By LACHLAN MOORHEAD A HALLAM grandfather whose front fence was left wrecked last week after a car reversed through it may have put the police on the trail of the culprit. The incident, which occurred last Tuesday, is the second time in three years that a car has crashed through Basil Harrison’s front fence in Appilla Close, a dead-end street that runs off Hinrichsen Drive. Mr Harrison was out walking his pet shih tzu on Saturday when he passed a car that he said looked similar to the vehicle that wrecked his fence. Mr Harrison then went to the Endeavour Hills Police Station to report the information. The incident is still being investigated. “It was raining when the car crashed through the fence, but I still memorised the colour and part of the number plate,” Mr Harrison said. “I went straight to the cops on Saturday. “I’m South African - we South Africans don’t waste any time!” Mr Harrison was sitting on his bed about 2.45pm last Tuesday, using his computer tablet, when he heard a “big bang”. He thought it was thunder but when Mr Harrison looked out the window, he saw a car had reversed through his fence while trying to turn. “My grandkids had just moved from the driveway,” Mr Harrison said. “They could have been killed.” Mr Harrison said it was hard to sleep at night because his street was always used as a playground by
Hallam resident Basil Harrison may have stumbled across some new information after a car ploughed Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS through his front fence last week. 133129 Anitha Ajay said the council would investigate the installation of additional traffic calming measures in Hinrichsen Drive following consultation with residents “later this year”. “Council has previously identified one section of Hinrichsen Drive where design works were undertaken and a speed hump was installed on the northern approach to the intersection of Hinrichsen Drive/Keppel Drive,” Mr Ajay said.
hoons. “It’s the worst road in the world,” he said. The City of Casey Council last year installed a speed hump in Hinrichsen Drive, near Keppel Drive, after a 100-signature petition was presented last year. But Mr Harrison said more speed humps were desperately needed near the turn-off to his street. Casey’s transport acting manager
“A report on the LTM Program and review of locations for traffic calming measures was considered by the council at its meeting on 19 August 2014. “Hinrichsen Drive has been identified as a location which warrants consideration of treatments through the Local Traffic Management (LTM) Program.” Information to Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000 or visit www. crimestoppers.com.au.
Tears as workers say they are being forced out By CASEY NEILL CASEY residents with more than 20 years’ service are set to lose their jobs at Sandown Racecourse. Thirty-four Sandown and Caulfield garden and grounds maintenance staff have learned that the Melbourne Racing Club (MRC) would be contracting out their jobs. The announcement on 15 January followed six months of enterprise bargaining agreement (EBA) negotiations. “Some of my mates have been here 40-odd years,” one worker told the Journal News. Workers’ contracts include a clause banning them from speaking to the media so the Journal News is withholding his identity. “All they’d offered was a zero per cent pay rise for three years which, basically, equates to a pay
ees that it had engaged contractors to start work on 1 February and encouraged them to apply for a job with the company. “The pay will be half the money we’re earning now and the conditions won’t be the same,” he said. “We fought for years to get these conditions and pay. “The MRC is crying poor all the time. They’re the richest racing club in Australia.” The worker said industrial action was likely but the Sandown Australia Day Races would be safe. “You’ve got to go through all the rigmarole. You have to apply with Fair Work for protected action,” he said. The Blue Diamond Stakes is on at Caulfield on 28 February. “They’d be probably a little bit worried about that one, I’d
cut,” he said. “We went down... for another meeting. I thought they’d at least offer us 1 or 2 per cent,” he said. But instead the MRC representative produced voluntary redundancy documents, offering a 10 per cent bonus on top of the EBA-stipulated redundancy payout and entitlements. “They’re calling them voluntary but, according to them, you either take the redundancy or take your leave. After that I don’t know what will happen,” the worker said. About seven workers have taken the offer. “One of the blokes that signed his was in tears over it,” he said. “I don’t think it’d be the same place to work. I don’t know if I can enjoy it anymore.” He said the MRC told employ-

AN ELDERLY woman sustained a fractured eye socket and bleeding on the brain during a vicious attack in Endeavour Hills. Police have urged anyone who has information about the attack on the 64-year-old woman to come forward. On 2 January this year the lady was gardening at her home along James Cook Drive. Police believe she was pushed in the back and said she could remember waking up on the front footpath outside her house. They said when the women awoke and saw her injuries she called paramedics who took her to The Alfred hospital where she remained for a couple of days. Police said they did not have any description of the offender or offenders and said there was no obvious motive. They have appealed for anyone in the area or any people involved to come forward and contact the Casey Criminal Investigation Unit.

say,” he said. Australian Workers Union (AWU) Victorian secretary Ben Davis said the decision was “a disproportionate response”. “There were no whispers. It’s just come completely out of the blue,” he said. Mr Davis said the union would lodge a dispute with Fair Work and call an emergency meeting of delegates from all metropolitan Melbourne racecourses to “talk through a campaign”. An MRC spokesman said the decision followed a broader 18-month efficiency review to tackle rising losses in its racing business, which topped $6 million per annum in recent years. He said MRC was forced to explore other options because the AWU made unreasonable demands.
A 21-YEAR-OLD Narre Warren woman allegedly spotted a “creepy” older man touching her younger sister in a Fountain Gate lolly shop. The woman, who had taken her 10-year-old sister to Discount Lollie Shop, said the man approached them at about 2.50pm on Tuesday 13 January. “He was just standing there staring at us in the same aisle the whole time. I didn’t want to look at him or give him any reason to talk to us,” the older sister recalled. She said she told her younger sister she was going to the next aisle but that a sense of dread flooded over her which drew her back into the aisle, where she found the man’s arm around her sister. The man, who the 10-year-old said was telling her she was ‘a good girl’, forcefully grabbed the 21-year-old when she tried to pull her sister away. “I told him we were leaving and he got a tight grip on my arm and told us to ‘stay here and you’re not going anywhere’,” the older sister alleged. “I finally got him off my arm... I was so scared I ran out of the store straight away.” She returned to the store days later to report the incident and was told their security camera did not cover the aisle where the alleged incident occurred. The man has been described as being short, in his early sixties, of Indian or Sri-Lanka appearance with white hair and no facial hair.

Pizza with lot of paradise By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS IT TAKES a super-supreme reason for a pizzeria to stand out from the Melbourne pack. For Dandenong eatery Taste of Paradise Halal Pizza, regular customers travel from as far away as the western suburbs, willing to eschew a multitude of pizza stores. The business was first called Malibu but gave way to its more evocative title - more in keeping with its customers’ glowing reviews. One absolutist diner proclaimed it the “best pizza on Earth” - now incorporated as the store’s slogan. Taste of Paradise owner and culinary artist Suda Perera is a fan of simple, inventive pizza combinations on a medium-crust chewy dough. The crowd favourite is the tandoori chicken - that’s set off by a tangy-andspicy combination of secret-recipe
EAT LOCAL, DINE GLOBAL dry curry, pineapple and mozzarella. That’s closely followed by the hot fish curry - a serving of marinated mackerel in a spicy sauce and mozzarella. “I don’t want to overcomplicate my recipes. I like the simplicity,” Perera says. “They’re the same recipes as when I started. Why should I change? The customers are satisfied. I don’t want to confuse them.” This store makes a loud statement. Its yellow shopfront signage shouts ‘Halal Pizza’ - the first such outlet in Dandenong. Its meats are certified Halal - and don’t include pork.
The cheery staff’s shiny uniforms are emblazoned with the Paradise logo and images of onion and garlic on their backs. It’s a major supporter of the Muslim Eid Festival, to local mosques and cancer fund-raisers, and has won over stomachs of all faiths. The store recently won Dandenong Retail Trader Association’s Retailer of the Year award. “Success has been from the quality of the service. We try to connect with all the community,” Mr Perera says. The Sri Lankan-born engineer set up the business 19 years ago after struggling to find work in Australia. That’s when he started getting interested in food, manufacturing his own recipes and spice combinations. Suffice to say, he does his own maintenance around the shop. He set up in Dandenong because

LOOKING BACK 100 years ago 28 January 1915 Dandenong Train Service THE train service between Dandenong and Melbourne has for some considerable time been altogether inadequate for the requirements of the people residing here, and unfortunately efforts in the past to improve matters, have met with but very slight success. It is difficult to understand why the authorities do not schedule a train service such as the place is entitled to, for representations made in the past go to show that the existing revenue and the growing demands of the station are deserving of a better train service that exists at the present time. At the conclusion of business
at the last meeting of the Dandenong Shire Council the inadequate train service was brought home to our municipal representatives. The South riding councillors, in view of the fact that the council concluded its business at half-past 5 o’clock reckoned upon catching the 6.08 train, but upon reference to the latest Timetable, it was found that the 6.08 is now only scheduled for Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays and nothing more convenient could be found than the 6.51, which runs daily, with the exception of Saturdays. A large and influential deputation should be arranged by the shire council in order to have the present unsatisfactory state of affairs improved upon.

And they will carry memories of Dandenong for a long time to come. Commissioner Ray Glensor, the contingent leader, told The Journal shortly before leaving Essendon Airport: “People here have been marvellous. "They have stopped us in the street and asked us if we have had a good time. "For many of them” the commissioner continued “Dandenong was a home away from home.” Mr Albert Pitts, the executive of-

was stationed at the Pakenham Incident Control Centre. “You feel so helpless because we’re doing the best job we can and we’re doing everything right but people just weren’t heeding the messages that we were sending out and people just underestimated the fire intensity and the extent of the fire,” Naomi said. “We all suffered mentally. For me, personally, it was seeing the damage that had occurred to my park because we love what we do and we’re passionate about it. “It’s not about the money; it’s about the environment and the love of the job. And to see the devastation... the wildlife gone, trees were just black and scarred.”
Naomi draws on support from her family and friends to juggle all the commitments in her life with all roads leading back to her number one priority - Sarah. After becoming a single parent, she found help through becoming a member of Carers Victoria, meeting other people with shared experiences. “Having someone who understands, that’s not judgemental, is really important as a carer,” she said. “Life is just a total struggle. So having someone that can relieve that pressure and take it all away and give you some time to reflect and be supportive is fantastic.” For more information, contact www.carersvictoria.org.au.

NAOMI O'Byrne is a fighter. Once her shift ends battling bushfires, another job begins. The single mum returns to her Casey home to tend to her 16-year-old daughter, Sarah, who was born with a developmental delay and suffers from epilepsy and autism. Park ranger Naomi can speak to her daughter but Sarah can’t answer. The teenager understands her mother but only uses sounds and gestures to respond. “Sarah means the world to me. She’s the reason I exist,” Naomi, 47, said. “If she’s gone for more than a couple of days I start to worry. I miss her; I think there’s something missing. “She’s obviously a part of me and I don’t know what I’d do without her. “She gives me joy. She’s funny, she’s resilient, and she’s great to be around.” In addition to Naomi’s 25year employment with Parks Victoria, the super mum volunteers regularly with the CFA and is a passionate member of Carers Victoria. Two weeks ago Naomi was part of a group that travelled to Horsham to relieve local firefighters as they battled a blaze in The Grampians. In 2009, when Naomi was working at Bunyip State Park, she found herself on the frontline as bushfires devastated the area in the days leading up to Black Saturday. On that fateful day, Naomi

BAA the sheep owner Vu Ho is threatening to take City of Greater Dandenong to court again - though over what, we’re not sure. The council investigated complaints about a car parked in a busy Springvale street for several weeks, chalk marked it and checked back two months later to find it unmoved. Officers placed a notice on the windscreen asking the owner to move the car or explain its position. The car belongs to Mr Ho’s son who is overseas. Mr Ho told the Journal he’d take the matter to the Supreme Court if the council seized the vehicle. But Mr Ho has since moved the car so the council says there is no issue - there won’t be a fine and they won’t seize the car and they’ve told Mr Ho exactly that. A decision over his $200,000-plus legal bill from his battle to keep Baa the sheep is due in the coming months.
SPRINGVALE South residents are on the lookout for a prowler who was seen peering into a home near Andleon Way and Vistilla Court late last year. He’s described as tall and lanky, aged about 50 and was wearing a flannelette shirt or lumber jacket and a baseball cap - matching the description of a man previously noticed acting suspiciously in Keysborough. Greater Dandenong Neighbourhood Watch urged anyone who noticed suspicious activity to note car registration numbers or take a photograph if safe to do so.
INTERNATIONALLY-renowned tenor Bradley Daley took time out from his busy schedule to entertain residents, staff and friends at TLC Aged Care in Noble Park and Hallam. He performed opera classics and popular songs and shared anecdotes from his 20plus years in opera. “Many of our residents are unable to attend opera performances, so we are very proud to be able to bring a performer of Bradley’s stature to our homes,” TLC CEO Lou Pascuzzi said.
NEW Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams rolled up her sleeves last week – and gave blood. The regular donor pumped out her universal O-negative blood at St Mary's Community Centre in Dandenong because one in three people need blood during their lifetime but only one in 30 people donate. The Journal has spoken to Ms Williams about her post-election plans and what makes her tick, and will publish the chat in coming weeks.
PAST students, teachers and parents returned to Sandown Park Kindergarten to celebrate its 50th anniversary on 18 December. The first committee president John Small and his wife Margaret travelled from Mt Eliza for the event. Poppy, Shelly and other guests looked for themselves in a photograph display and reminisced.
THE new draft plan for a popular Endeavour Hills precinct has been placed on public display by Casey council. The plan, which is on public exhibition until 9 February, outlines the council’s blueprint for the development of the site at 63-65 Heatherton Road, which is slated to include high density housing and more commercial and retail floor space. The plan can be viewed at the City of Casey’s Customer Service Centre or online. “The development plan outlines the desire for medium to higher density housing close to existing services within the precinct and sets out clear urban guidelines,” Casey Mayor Mick Morland said. “The plan also includes the vision for more commercial and retail floor space that will create long-term job opportunities for the local community. Submissions in relation to the plan can be made in writing and sent to Team Leader City Strategy, City of Casey, PO Box 1000, Narre Warren, 3805 or via email to sdevelopment@casey.vic. gov.au. View the plan online at www.casey.vic.gov.au/ currentconsultations.

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST
Path back home to quality By CASEY NEILL SWIM against the tide is Aluminium Industries managing director Jim Gallagher’s top piece of advice. And he seems to know what he’s talking about - his Dandenong South business is growing while “the rest of the market is stagnant”. “About eight years ago, we took the decision to migrate back to Australia,” he said. Extruded Products Australia founder John Villante was investing in new extrusion presses in Australia and Mr Gallagher joined him. “It was totally counter-market,” he said. “Everyone else was still putting a Hawaiian shirt on and jumping on a plane to China to do the deal of the century. “We’re probably stealing market share from people who are still totally reliant on imported product.” Mr Gallagher is about to build a new 800 square metre facility across the road and Mr Villante, based next door, is putting Australia’s equal largest extrusion press on the land - a $60 million investment.
“You swim against the tide - whatever they do, do the reverse.” He said Aluminium Industries was among the first businesses to establish relationships in China but things didn’t go smoothly. “It’s like eBay - if you get 80 per cent of what you really want you’re happy,” he said. “It’s one thing to have a low cost, but it’s a different thing to have better value. “I felt that either we were very unlucky, in terms that we’d picked the wrong relationships, or everyone’s got the same problem and I think the latter is the case. “We’d have less than 10 per cent of our product now come from China.
“China is not the answer. It’s part of the equation but it’s not the answer.” “Being in proximity to our customers means that it’s far quicker, quality’s much easier to control, communication’s so much easier, the financial side is easier, the logistical side is easier.” Aluminium Industries has changed from a metal supplier to a product and component supplier since its beginnings in 1996, and employs about 110 people. “There’s a great sense of nervous energy around this business. We don’t take anything for granted. “If you haven’t got that nervous energy you get complacent,” Mr Gallagher said. Committee for Dandenong launched the Great Southern Manufacturing - Making it Great ... in Dandenong project last November to correct public perceptions of the industry. Successful companies will share their stories through video, digital media and advertising. Visit makingitgreat.com.au to get involved.

Cash to spread Windermere cheer CHRISTMAS came early for Windermere this holiday season. Last December Windermere Child and Family Services, based in Narre Warren, was awarded a $35,000 donation from Zagame’s Berwick Hotel in the week before Christmas. Windermere CEO Dr Lynette Buoy said the much-needed and valued funds were a result of the local business’s desire to actively “give back” to the local community. Ms Buoy said she was overjoyed by the commitment from Zagame’s Berwick and its contribution to helping Windermere deliver early prevention and intervention programs. “Each year Windermere continues to advance its vision of a stronger, connected and more supported community,” she said. “We believe that everyone is someone in our community and through our programs and support from local busi-
nesses like Zagame’s Berwick, we will see many lives change for the better.” Christmas is not always a pleasant time for those in Casey who may have no family to turn to nor money to buy gifts. But it’s in this bleak reality that Windermere and the local community rallies to help underprivileged people living throughout the south-eastern municipality. Case managers from Windermere Narre Warren came together last month to collect hundreds of gifts and hampers which were donated by the community to be distributed to the family service provider’s clients just in time for Christmas. Local businesses, schools, community groups and individuals dug deep over the past two months, donating more than 800 gifts and 150 hampers to Windermere’s Merry Mission appeal. Ms Buoy commended the selflessness shown in spades by the Casey community. “Many local families are feeling the
strain of everyday living and will find it tough to celebrate the festive season with the presents and hearty meals that many of us take for granted,” she said. “Christmas should be a time for giving and our community are known for their compassion and support of those less fortunate. “This has once again been proven by the overwhelming generosity shown during this year’s campaign.” Dr Buoy reiterated the donated gifts and hampers went a long way to bringing joy to many local children and families. Groups that donated to the Merry Mission appeal included Beaconhills College, Lyndhurst Primary School, The Inner Wheel Club of Berwick, Tirhatuan Park Golf Club, Target Mornington, Berwick Woodworkers Club, Dandenong Valley Historic Car Club, Commonwealth Bank, BJT Business Advisors and Berwick Motor Group.
Windermere’s Carrie Simmons and Vicky Coughlan-Ward distributed the donated gifts to those less fortunate in the City of Casey, just in time for Christmas. 132351 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS

There will be something to enjoy for every member of the family with fantastic prizes to be won, free show bags, fishing, the Yamaha Super tank, cooking

ENJOY YOUR PLACE BY THE LAKE demand, Brad said: “purchasers recognise that this is an established area which has traditionally been tightly held and commands strong resale values.” Water Edge is surrounded by excellent schools including Haileybury, St Francis Xavier, and Nossal selective government high school and is close to the freeway, train station and Berwick village. Local land prices typically exceed $300,000.
The final release of home sites with front-row water views is now selling at Water Edge, Narre Warren South. “There just won’t be another opportunity to secure such a prestige waterfront address,” said Brad Ryan of local agents Harcourts. Water Edge is a boutique development and 50 of its 80 home sites have been sold in less than 12 months. Asked why there has been such strong
“Many people also consider that the Narre Warren South postcode provides them with a superior long-term investment compared with property in the less established areas of Clyde and Cranbourne North,” Brad said. Water Edge incorporates a range of environmentally sustainable features including energy-efficient street lighting, recycled water and optimum solar orientation of home sites. A high-speed fibre optic network provides
residents with next-generation superfast broadband services. More than 60 per cent of the site has been dedicated to wetlands and open space. Land at Water Edge is currently selling from $198,900. SEA CHANGE IS BECKONING FOR MANY IN HEIGHT OF THE SUMMER SEASON With students returning to school and many of us back at work this week, readjusting can prompt thoughts of buying a holiday home - or even moving permanently to the coast or the country. This can be a good investment and, with research and planning, can open future options. These can include swapping with other holiday home owners to vary the destination, relocating or retiring there in future and even a long-term sea change or tree change. Every summer real estate agents experience the results of this longing for an endless holiday lifestyle. For agents in coastal
towns summer is a seven-day-aweek frenzy, with January accounting for a considerable part of their agencies’ annual turnover. And the rush can last until Easter. In towns such as Warrnambool, along the Gippsland coast and on Phillip Island, the Mornington Peninsula and along the Great Ocean Road, agents show properties to holidaymakers facing that drive to the office, packed trains and weekends mowing the lawns. Agents in inland towns such as Bright are also busy, with buyers taking advantage of fine weather to shop for a rural retreat. While most search the internet for
a property, holidaymakers have the time to browse in agency windows and view properties. It is a time when it is easy to buy with the heart, not the head. But holiday home purchases should be treated like any other house purchase, resting on a foundation of solid research with sound fundamentals. It is important that a gorgeous view or peaceful location does not detract from those fundamentals. Is the Section 32 in order? Is the property sound? Has the contract been checked thoroughly? What is planned for nearby blocks and are there any road or major infrastructure projects
planned nearby? Agents must be aware of restrictions on development limiting what can be done with that fibro holiday shack on a large block and should give you this advice. But to be sure, ask whether or not you can develop the property as this will also have a bearing on its value. It is also important to check whether a rural property - or even one in a regional town or an outer Melbourne suburb - is deemed bushfire-prone. What work is needed to have the home and surrounds meet the recommended bushfire safety standards?

Step up to our award winning Milan, voted HIA’s Best Display Home 2014.* The Milan 29 from our Aspire range has just won the 2014 HIA Victorian division Best Display Home between $250,001 – 300,000. It’s an architect designed home ofering afordable luxury, space and light and a range of innovative features. The sun court, for instance, actually increases the usable interior space and floods the living areas with light. Or as the judges said: “A very open home that gives the impression it is bigger than it actually is.
“Excellent workmanship, attention to detail and a feeling of spaciousness.” – HIA Judges
You can sense the diference immediately with generously proportioned spaces that flow together naturally to create vistas and extended views with picture windows usually only found in more expensive homes. The high level of luxury inclusions also caught the eye of the judges who said the Caesarstone benches, Franke sinks and Smeg appliances “represent value for money”. The overall style and elegance of this four bedroom home is typified by the raised ceiling above the dining area. Visit the Milan today – and judge for yourself.

It’s the Panther powerhouse By JARROD POTTER THE PRIDE of the Panthers were on display Thursday night as 12 elite Dandenong Cricket Club players were inducted into the club’s 25-Year Team. Waverley Cricket Club moved to Shepley Oval in 1989/90 and merged with the Sub-District Dandenong side to form Waverley-Dandenong Cricket Club. Ever since the club has been a powerhouse in Victorian Premier Cricket, winning two District flags in 2006/07 and 2010/11 as well as helping cultivate the careers of three Test cricketers - Darren Pattinson, James Pattinson and Peter Siddle - along with a Oneday International all-round expert - Ian Harvey. A power-packed team was the only fitting way to cap off 25 years in Victorian Premier Cricket as the club announced the team of the quartercentury, captained by Premier Cricket leading run-scorer Warren Ayres. At Ayres side are a plethora of starring batsmen as current openers Tom Donnell and Brett Forsyth, club record holder Rob Bartlett, club runs record holder Tim Hooper and Ian Harvey round out the top of the order. The bowlers are just as quick and fearsome as the Pattinsons - Darren and James - lead the attack, while Peter Siddle, Harvey and Matthew Lawrence round out an impressive five-man arsenal. It wasn’t just the players who were recognised for their achievements in the club’s quarter of a century at Shepley Oval, with administrators, coaches and staff also acknowledged for their tireless work behind the scenes. Long-time 1st and 2nd’s captains and club coaches Brendan McArdle and Ayres were honoured as co-coach-

in that sort of thing and in some small part I hopefully helped some of those guys get to where they were.” Darren Pattinson was also honoured for his achievements with the club while Siddle was presented with his induction into Cricket Victoria’s 200 Club for players who have notched 200 matches at Test, First Class or Premier 1st XI level. “I think it’s been a great night, everyone’s enjoyed themselves, the speakers we’ve had here have put on some exceptional entertainment and
DANDENONG 25-YEAR XI TEAM the team that we’ve announced could compete very well with some of the international sides we’ve seen in the past,” Dandenong president Michael Findlay said. “25 years here and I think we’ve lived in a very lucky time for Dandenong.” It will be one of the last official functions of Dandenong Cricket Club as a standalone entity, as the Panthers will merge with Hawthorn-Monash University next season to become Dandenong-Hawthorn Cricket Club.
Green and gold for Lachie By JARROD POTTER A CHANCE turf outing set the wheels in motion to earn Lachie Macrae a run in the green and gold. After representing the Ferntree Gully and District Cricket Association (FGDCA) - and helping earn the association claim the VMCU Jim Beitzel Under-16 Shield - Macrae’s taste for turf guided him down the hill and towards Endeavour Hill’s Sydney Pargeter Reserve. His turf cricket passion is paying dividends as the Eagles’ left-arm livewire earned his place in the Australian All Abilities cricket team, set to square off in a tri-series against South Africa and England. The 17-year-old Lysterfield bowler, who has a mild intellectual disability, worked his way through the Victoria Vikings All Abilities team and a series of tryout sessions before earning a spot in a Brisbane training camp at the Cricket Australia Centre of Excellence. Put through his paces by former Australian paceman Andy Bichel, Macrae relished his chance and was selected in the final 14-man squad for the INAS TriSeries, starting 16 March in Melbourne. “I was pumped to make it,” Macrae
said. “I did a Brisbane training course - I went to the MCG to do a training session and they cut it down to 32… I trained for a few weeks and they picked the squad of 14 and (then) I went to Brisbane to do a four-day training session. “Great facilities and it was amazing up there - great experience.” Charging through the crease with his left-arm pacers, Macrae wants to not only impress with his bowling, but hopes to add another string to his bow and make in-roads with his batting to expand as an all-rounder. A 2012-13 hat-trick with Lysterfield capped off his junior career in style and he hopes to add to a burgeoning collection of Sub-District wickets - having snared 34 wickets already in his first two seasons of turf cricket. He’s not only a top talent in cricket, as Macrae represented the state in the School Sport Australia Cross Country Championships in Albany, Western Australia last year, finishing fourth in the Athletes with Disability (AWD) three-kilometre run. Macrae wanted to thank his parents, the Lysterfield and Endeavour Hills Seaming his way into the Australian All Abilities team Cricket Clubs, Cricket Victoria and is Endeavour Hills cricketer Lachie Macrae. 133227 Cricket Australia for their support. Diamonds sparkle By JARROD POTTER UNEARTHING their best and brightest from the inaugural campaign, the Berwick Diamonds Women’s Gridiron Team celebrated the end of the season with their presentation night on Friday. While the season came to an abrupt end in the Diamonds’ 6-34 Gridiron Victoria semi-final loss to Northern Raiders, an enormous amount of inaugural season positives have given the Diamonds great momentum heading into their first off-season. After a year with her head over the ball, taking crunching tackles as the team’s starting runningback, Bliss Love was named the Diamonds’ inaugural Most Valuable Player. On offence, quarterback Vanessa Roman was named Offensive MVP, a stellar achievement for a first-season quarterback who relished the chance to star under-centre. Outside line-backer, and general nightmare to opposition backs, Erin Gubatunga earned the Defensive MVP as well as Best Finals’ Player to cap off the major awards, presented by head coach Jamie Stafford and the rest of the Diamonds’ coaching and training staff. Also receiving awards at the Sandhurst Club on Friday 16 January were Barbara Dunlop (Most Improved), Chantelle Baniani (Best Lineman) and the Dale Warren Trophy - named after Berwick Miners’ champion and long-time administrator - was won by co-captain Cat Bouwhuis. The Berwick Miners men’s program is about to kick off, with preparations for the new season to begin with the club’s Registration Day on Sunday 8 February, 10am at Rawling Field, Endeavour Hills.

SPORT WNBL - Round 14
Taylor-made outset By JARROD POTTER WHILE the margin was massive, the context of Dandenong’s 95-64 win over Adelaide should not be undervalued. Dandenong had the ball on a string from the get-go, charging out to a 28-8 lead at the first change following an early onslaught from Penny Taylor (15 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists). With chief play-caller Kathleen Macleod still a few weeks off returning from a knee injury, her absence gave plenty of opportunity for Endeavour Hills-based guard Aimie Clydesdale (13 points, 7 assists) to step up and show off her potential. Clydesdale has made a seamless move from bench to starter in the last couple of rounds, as she proved again on Friday night she is a star on the rise in the midst of a breakout WNBL season. In tandem with superstars Taylor and Cappie Pondexter (8 points, 10 rebounds) - Clydesdale ran the ball for 32 minutes on Friday night and almost snared a double-double as the Rangers started to rack up the points. A 30-point half-time lead threatened to decimate the Lightning even further - as the Adelaide-based club seeks a new owner to ensure its survival - but to their credit, the visitors stopped a complete blowout emerging in the second half. The likes of Laura Hodges (13 points, 9 rebounds) and Jenny Screen (10 points, 11 rebounds) valiantly held on to keep the margin near the half-time deficit, as Rangers’ coach Mark Wright went to the bench and tested a number of different strategies - including a ‘tall-ball’
Penny Taylor charges to the rack in Dandenong’s 95-64 Friday-evening win over Adelaide. 133442 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS variant with Taylor running the ball. Also impressing for Dandenong in the runaway victory was Annalise Pickrel (19 points, 4 rebounds) - who was freed up from her usual centre post on Friday night to attack the wings as she drilled two threepointers and went at over 50 per cent from the field. Tegan Cunningham (11 points, 7 rebounds) impressed off the bench as per usual, as she continues to dominate the ‘sixth-
man’ position in the Rangers’ roster. “Adelaide still showed that they have a lot of fight, even though they were down it didn’t feel like they were out of it,” Wright said. “I think you give credit to Adelaide, not one stage did they stop going hard. “It’s hard to be up by 30 and keep the same intensity up, but we held and didn’t go backwards which was
really important… we got to play our bench and rest our starters towards the end, so it was good all round.” Dandenong sits third on the WNBL ladder - two games clear of the three-way battle for fourth between Sydney Uni, Canberra and Melbourne - and will hope to maintain that buffer with a win over West Coast at home in the ABC Match of the Week, on Saturday afternoon from 3pm.
Marinko magic THE fifth time was the charm for Dandenong North’s Marinko Matosevic, who claimed his first Australian Open win in a five-set epic. Matosevic, 29, has perennially faced a first-round exit from the grand slam events, but has started to power through the draws and earn his place among the world’s top100 players after earning second-round berths at the French Open and Wimbledon last year. Monday night would tip the tables further in Matosevic’s favour after breaking his Australian Open hoodoo. The world number 81 ensured his firstround form would continue at the first Grand Slam of 2015, as Matosevic rallied to push aside Russian Alexander Kudryavtsev in a comeback triumph that sent the crowd ballistic. Winning the first set, before dropping the next two, Matosevic smashed through 16 winners to put the Russian on the back foot as he claimed the fourth set 7-5 to level the match. Earning a match-defining break in the fifth set at 4-3, Matosevic served the final game and when his match-point winning forehand cross-court shot was smashed into the net, the Australian collapsed on the ground in pure joy after finally winning his first match at his hometown Open. The Dandenong dynamo’s Australian Open run was not fated to last much longer, as it came to an end on Wednesday afternoon. Facing world number six and reigning Olympic gold medallist Andy Murray, the Brit made light work of Matosevic 1-6, 3-6, 2-6 on Margaret Court Arena in the straight sets victory.
Fabio certainly no slow Bro By MICHAEL FLOYD POPULAR young trainer Brooke Ennis landed four winners on Thursday evening at Sandown Park, including both Listed feature events. Lady Toy took out the night’s opening feature, the Listed Maidment Memorial (595m), with an impressive railing effort in 34.13. A renowned slow beginner, Lady began relatively well to assume a rails position behind early leader Come On Fantasy. Lady Toy held her position and displayed an impressive turn of foot down the back straight, to claim a powerful four-length victory. Lady Toy, or ‘Lucy’ as she’s known at home, only arrived in Ennis’s ken-
nel over the weekend but hasn’t taken long to make an impression on her new trainer. “I think she probably misses Jim (her owner) a little bit but she’s settled in well.” said Ennis. “I didn’t expect her to win tonight, the 595m is a bit short of her preferred distance, but she jumped well and put herself in a good spot.” “We actually nominated for a 715m race but there weren’t enough nominations for a race to go ahead. “She’s going to Perth with My Bro Fabio, Deadly Vane and Blinker’s On… we wanted them all to have the same preparation going into their respective series (Perth Cup and Gal-
axy), so rather than have her miss out on a run we thought we’d put her in (over 595m). It worked out well.” In the night’s second feature, My Bro Fabio reminded all why he is regarded as one of the most exciting greyhounds in the country with a stunning last-to-first victory in the Listed Australian Sprint. Despite a tardy getaway, My Bro Fabio enjoyed a clear run through the first turn before unleashing a devastating burst down the back straight to sweep around his high-class rivals and storm to a one and one-half-length victory in a slick 29.27. Kennelmate Dream It held on for My Bro Fabio earned a big hug from trainer Brooke Ennis after a superb winning run in the Listed Australian Sprint. 133590 Picture: SUPPLIED second, giving Ennis the quinella.

Bulls’ dreams go Splatt
Outright, outright… and outright
WHETHER Eagle or Bull, the result was the same on a tough day in the field for the home sides. In a re-match of last year’s grand final, Noble Park was put to the sword by Oakleigh (253) as Andrew Splatt, held together the order in a textbook rear-guard half-century. Playing with a point to prove grand final revenge and honouring Ben Pinwill in his 300th match, Oakleigh fought throughout the order to put the pressure back on the Bulls. Carrying on the strong work of the top order, pushing the tally past triple figures, Andrew Splatt, Chris Williamson (27) and Michael Splatt (34) notched back-to-back 50-run stands to leave Noble Park without much to smile about. Spinner Rob Johnston (6/65) was the exception to Noble Park’s woes, as the spinner notched 23 overs and earned his first five-wicket haul of the season. Also standing up to rattle off the overs in the heat were Marasinghe Perera (1/56) and Ash Perera (0/32). It leaves the Bulls with a staggering chase on Saturday - which could prove the difference in the race for finals as Noble Park sits three points off the pace already heading into this round.

a chase next weekend after Malvern (8/256) posted a monster tally. Malvern’s Mike Jones (73) took the Eagles to all parts while Richard
Saniga (3/45), captain Chris Pereira (2/48) and Vaughan Baxter (2/58) all toiled in the conditions to restrict the visitors.
PREMIER CRICKET - Round 15 (day 1)
Thunderbolts strike By JARROD POTTER
Dandenong skipper Dan Doran proved most effective against CaseySouth Melbourne, snaring four wickets on a tough day in the field. 133584 Picture: JARROD POTTER
A CAVALCADE of Test players took Casey Fields by storm on Saturday as Casey-South Melbourne (9/308) took first day honours despite the best efforts of Dandenong and their Test match front-line attack. James Pattinson (0/41) took the new rock and was lethal against the Casey-South Melbourne top order, with a number of his 140-kilometre thunderbolts. After his first ball - finding Josh Holden’s (13) edge to Peter Sweeney, Siddle also struggled to make in-roads against a dogged Swans’ batting order. It brought to the crease Casey’s Test match spearhead - wicketkeeper-batsman Matthew Wade (61). Wade saw off the worst of Pattinson and Siddle and reversed the fortunes in a stellar 126-run partnership with Lachie Sperling (68). The wickets would finally come as Dan Doran (4/75) and James Wilcock (2/41) picked off middle or-
der scalps, including the important scalp of Wade as he edged Wilcock through to David Alleyne behind the pegs, while Sperling holed out to Sri Lankan Test opener Kaushal Silva off Doran. The young Swans flew highest as Sperling and former Tooradin batsman Ryan Eaton (74) took the starstudded Panthers to the cleaners. Eaton notched another half-ton partnership for the Swans in tandem with Shane Maggs (10) before the tail wagged hard as keeper Devin Pollock (27 not out) and Simon Black (20) pushed the tally to 308 by day’s end. Casey batted through to stumps and has the tough choice whether or not to declare over the weekend and set Dandenong a terrifying triplecentury chase on Saturday. Kooweerup rising star Adam McMaster (1/42) made his two-day Premier debut over the weekend as he stormed in and claimed his first wicket - Casey captain Chris Hall in his 10 overs.
WOMEN’S VICTORIAN PREMIER CRICKET - Round 15 (Twenty20)
Lions run down by Mustangs By JARROD POTTER IT WAS bleak at ground level for the Dandenong Lions (8/93) as they slumped against the rampaging Box Hill Mustangs (1/128cc). The Lions struggled to make headway into the Box Hill order, as Rebecca Carter (61) picked up where her Mustangs team mate and Australian captain Meg Lanning usually starts off. Carter belted half-a-dozen boundaries and a whopping six at Greaves Reserve to issue the challenge to the home side. Carter and Sarah Chancellor-Goddard (35 not out)
cashed in to put on 77 for the second stand and finish unbeaten, leaving a tricky 129-run chase for the Lions. Emma Gallagher (0/17) and Primrose Wohlers (0/17) - returning from State under-18 representative duties - were the best of the Lions’ bowling attack. A strong start from Erica Kershaw (21) - off only nine balls - was ended by Danielle Montague (2/4), leaving the heaving lifting to Chelsea Moscript (21) and Alana King (17). The young Lions pushed the tempo along, but struggled to hit the bad ball for boundaries. Moscript’s gutsy knock
would finally end on 21 as she holed out off Madeleine Clayton (1/10), triggering another collapse as the side fell from 2/37, when King fell, to 6/60. The last innings of notable resistance came from Wohlers (16 not out) who held on to ensure Dandenong batted out its overs and made an attempt at the win. In the second match, Dandenong’s (3/117) 2nd XI was also bested by Box Hill (3/121), despite the best efforts of captain Carin Eastburn (55 not out). Eastburn has taken her season Lions’ opener Chelsea Moscript plays one down the tally to 568 runs at 81.1 in carpet en route to 21. 133585 Picture: JARROD POTTER a sensational season so far.
IN A day of DDCA carnage, maximum points were seized by Springvale South, North Dandenong and Heinz Southern Districts. COOMOORA v HEINZ SOUTHERN DISTRICTS SOLID Coomoora (142 and 159) sadly was not enough to earn the Kangaroos its first points of the season as Heinz Southern Districts (7/175dec and 5/128) did enough to take the chocolates. Adam Semmens (49) started the rapid chase before Michael Davies (38) and Brent Patterson (31 not out) charged ahead with declaration in mind. Saliya Saman (2/30) was impressive for the visitors off his 21.2 overs. Saman (61) would back it up with the bat as he proved the only resistance to Heinz - namely master spinner Paul Stockdale (5/59). Needing more than eight-an-over to take the outright, Heinz Southern Districts absolutely flayed the Kangaroos in the second innings - smashing 128 in 15.3 overs. Striking faster and harder than their namesake animal, the Cobras played hit-and-run cricket to take the points. Davies (35 not out), Trevor Davies (18 not out), Justin Davis (23) and Stockdale (23) hit the suitcase out of anything Coomoora pitched up. It pushes the Cobras up to fifth before hosting Berwick while Coomoora remains in the relegation zone as it heads to Hallam Kalora Park. BERWICK v PARKFIELD WITH hearts and minds firmly locked elsewhere, Berwick (79 and 2/125) was no match for Parkfield (183). Mourning the passing of perennial club supporter Bill Crawford - father of Berwick all-rounder Ryan - the mood at Arch Brown Reserve was sombre, but with Crawford a firm believer in the game carrying on no matter what, Berwick took to the field to respect the wishes of the departed DDCA legend. In the battle of the Bears, Parkfield emerged triumphant as young spinner Travis D’Souza (7/30) rattled through Berwick at a rapid rate. D’Souza’s 15.3 overs beguiled Berwick and he ran through the home side en route to his best DDCA figures. Berwick (2/125) fared much better in the second innings, going the tonk to erase the outright deficit and thump out the remaining 21 overs. Third place Berwick will head to Heinz Southern Districts with a spot in the top-four on the line while Parkfield moves up to eighth and remains an outside chance of playing finals, needing to impress this week against top-of-the-ladder Cranbourne at home. MORDIALLOC v LYNDALE ESCAPING by a whisker, Mordialloc (8/179) scraped over the line against Lyndale (173). On a rare occasion in recent history, the Bloodhounds’ top order fell over under pressure from Dale Tormey (2/53) and Ricky Foulstone (1/29). Quyen Pham (3/38) carried on the relentless attack, but Mordialloc finally found some strength through Damith Ralalage (53) and captain Chathura Athukorala (39). Cameron Tomkinson (29 not out) finished the job to keep Mordialloc in the top four before its clash against Buckley Ridges while Lyndale remains anchored near the bottom in 11th as it hosts Springvale South. NORTH DANDENONG v BUCKLEY RIDGES ONE of the two outright victories this week belonged to the Lois Twohig Reserve brigade as North Dandenong (139) powered through Buckley Ridges (60 and 58) twice. Barely adding to their overnight tally at 8/125, North Dandenong instead chose to rip apart the Ridges with the ball as only 21.3 overs were needed for outright triumph. Jurgen Andersen (3/8) and Liam Dudding (3/12) were sensational in skittling the visitors, as returning Buckley Ridges champion Shane D’Rozario (11) top-scored in the second innings. Boosted by the outright, North Dandenong bounces up to seventh ahead of its clash with Dandenong West while Buckley Ridges hosts Mordialloc. SPRINGVALE SOUTH v DANDENONG WEST SIGNALLING clear intent to return to the final match of the season, Springvale South (5/118dec and 2/92) cantered past Dandenong West (95 and 114) for maximum points. Ash Stephens (25) and Andrew Harry (38) resisted the Bloods’ onslaught - especially Harry who belted five fours and two sixes at Harold Road - but their efforts would pale compared to the home side. Nathan King (4/9) and Yoshan Kumara (3/27) slashed through the Bulls’ order to leave a sub-100 tally for an outright victory with plenty of time remaining in the day. That job would be taken up by Kumara (36 not out) and Jarrod Armitage (18) - promoted to get some time at the crease - with Steve Masterson (28 not out) holding up the other end in his usual stoic manner. The Bloods sit four points off the lead on the Turf 1 ladder before clashing with Lyndale away.

KIA has taken to its most popular model, the Cerato to add even more appeal to an already well specified small car. The MY15 Cerato S Premium sits between the S and the Si grades, and comes in four-door sedan or five-door hatch guise. The S Premium adds satellite navigation, rear view camera, seven-inch touch screen, 16-inch alloy wheels, auto headlamp control, DVD player and more for a keenly priced $24,590, only $2300 over the entry-level automatic. The new Cerato S Premium carries all the advantages of the S model including 1.8-litre GDi engine, six airbags, ABS antiskid brakes, electronic stability control, tilt and telescopic steering wheel, six-speaker audio system with remote control, Bluetooth streaming and handsfree, cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, trip computer, air conditioning, 60:40 split fold rear seat, power windows and keyless remote entry. The 2015 Cerato upgrades see satellite navigation as standard in S Premium, Si and SLi while the six-speed manual transmission is available only on the S model. All other grades have the six-speed automatic as standard. Si and SLi models in sedan and hatch continue to offer the 2.0-litre GDi engine. Not much has changed, and why should it. The Cerato looks as fresh these days as it was when the present model hit our shores two years ago. Kia says its European lines are designed to portray ‘dynamic muscularity’ and provoke an emotional response. A wide, low stance and distinctive concave door contours promote a no-nonsense sense of a sporty vehicle while the addition of front and rear quarter glass panels gives the car a sense of spaciousness and improves visibility by eliminating blind spots. The MY15 S Premium adds new 16-inch wheels. Inside the new model accommodates a dash-mounted seven-inch touch screen among driver-focused instruments and controls within easy reach. However, such is the angle of the screen it is susceptible to reflection in bright sunlight and annoyingly loses clarity.

Model range Cerato S hatch and sedan: $19,990 (manual), $22,290 (automatic); Cerato S Premium hatch and sedan: $24,590 (automatic); Cerato Si hatch and sedan: $28,490 (automatic); Cerato SLi hatch and sedan: $31,490 (automatic).
The addition of satellite navigation, rear view camera and DVD player, all accessed via the seven-inch touch screen, puts the Cerato S Premium ahead of the small-car field. The computer itself goes to great depths to deliver an amazing array of information including fuel economy, temperatures (in Celsius and Fahrenheit), distances (in miles / kilometres and their shorter measures). However, it is with speed that the electronic brain begins to show off, going beyond metric and imperial measure, with equivalents in knots (US), knots (UK) and for the frustrated fighter pilot among us, a Mach figure, which as you can imagine at Cerato speeds, forms a long line of zeroes behind the decimal point. There’s also a trip monitor, calculator and Help function, if the technology becomes too much. The 100kW 1.8-litre Nu MPI engine in the S Premium is mated with a six-speed automatic transmission with two modes fully automatic or Sport. The selector gate is a straight P-R-N-D arrangement, with Sport mode engaged by moving the lever towards the driver when in D mode. For city driving, fully automatic mode is ideal, while Sport mode allows for clutch-less sequential manual gear changes one ratio at a time - for greater driver involvement. Steering wheel-mounted paddles are not an option. As well as the use of highstrength steel in the body, active safety technology includes
Electronic Stability Control and Vehicle Stability Management that works with the ESC to provide ‘corrective’ steering inputs in tricky road conditions. The new S Premium comes standard with six airbags including dual front airbags, front side airbags and side curtain airbags offering head protection to both front seat and rear seat occupants. Having broken my right ankle 18 months ago, every car I drive becomes a measure of my recovery and the Cerato S Premium produced a pleasing result. The floor-mounted accelerator pedal was fitted, says Kia, to follow the natural movement of the ankle, providing stress-free operation. It did. Indeed, unduly heavy pedal pressure had the ultra-responsive engine firing the car off the mark with surprising haste, which probably went some way to the 1.8-litre motor returning a surprisingly high fuel consumption figure of 10 litres per 100 kilometres in city driving, while recording a much more satisfactory 4.8 L/100 km on the motorway. Another addition to a Kia favourite can only help the South Korean company to further gains in the increasingly tough worldwide automobile market. The maker appears to know what the buyer wants.
