Power of passion By JESSE GRAHAM
Chairman of the National Australia Day Council Ben Roberts-Smith VC, MG, congratulated all of the award recipients, which included Australian of the Year Rosie Batty, and all of the finalists for their efforts. “From an extraordinary group of finalists, all of whom are inspirational Australians and great ambassadors for their home states and territories, we have four award recipients who stand as role models for us all,” he said. 61-year-old Jackie French from New South Wales, while Australia’s Local Hero award was given to Queensland’s Juliette Wright. All of the award recipients were selected by public nominations, including Thomas’s Victorian award. Though the national award has eluded him, Thomas is a journalist, an advocate, a filmmaker and, award or not, an inspirational Australian, and a fine example of how hard work and passion can breed results.

Thomas King is the 2015 Victorian Young Australian of the Year.
1171213-PB05-15
A RELENTLESS drive to better the world around him saw Kalorama-raised Thomas King crowned with one of the highest honours for a young person in Victoria late last year. Thomas, a passionate environmentalist, was named as 2015 Victorian Young Australian of the Year and made his way up to Canberra over the weekend as a finalist for the Young Australian of the Year award. He joined the cream-of-the-crop of Australian citizens, who had received similar honours in their home states, to see who would be named as the top of the lot on Sunday 25 January. Sadly, Thomas was pipped to the post by Western Australia’s Drisana Levitzke-Gray, who has been an advocate for the deaf community both in Australia and overseas. He told the Mail before the ceremony that he had no expectations of winning, and had been humbled to receive the Victorian honour in October last year. “I was very overwhelmed - it is such a great honour, and very humbling as well,” he said. “I was shocked to be a state finalist - I wasn’t expecting anything more than that. “It’s a very pleasant surprise to have such an honourable accolade, and to have the opportunity to connect with other incredible young people in Canberra this weekend, I’m really looking forward to it.” Thomas has been campaigning for global causes since the age of 13, when he saw a television campaign about unsustainable palm oil production in South East Asia. He established the website, SayNotoPalmOil, which acts as an online resource to direct people to products that don’t contain palm oil and draws up to half a million visits each year. In recent years he has also reported from the London Olympic Games in 2012 as a journalist, reporting for a number of small island nations that did not have the resources to send their own media crews. Now 18, he works with the Oaktree Foundation on their Live Below the Line fund-raiser, where people are encouraged to try living on less than $2 - the extreme poverty line - each day. Though he had to remain scant on the details, Mr King said that he would be starting a new campaign with Animals Australia in coming weeks. A current Mooroolbark resident, Thomas grew

Stamp out fires By JESSE GRAHAM YARRA Ranges Police have warned visitors and residents alike to be careful around public barbecues or risk potential jail time, after people recklessly threw away burning fuel near Silvan last month. Yarra Ranges Acting Inspector Paul van Gemert, Lilydale CIU Detective Leading Senior Constable Bridgette De Chirico and Parks Victoria Dandenong Ranges Area Manager Matthew Hoogland gathered at the Silvan Reservoir Park last week to issue a reminder to people about fire safety during summer. Det Leading Sen Const De Chirico said the meeting followed a number of fires that had started in the area, caused by people dumping hot fire-beads used for barbecues when leaving the park. She said the beads were left by the side of McKillop Road in December,
while another was in a garden bed, close to wooden sleepers. “We want to bring home a message that, whether people intend to cause a bushfire or recklessly cause a bushfire, the same penalty applies in the courts,” Det Leading Sen Const De Chirico said. She said that recklessly causing a bushfire carried a maximum 15-year jail sentence, and that a number of related offences can also follow. “If a person is sentenced for recklessly causing a bushfire, they can expect a term of imprisonment,” she said. Act Insp van Gemert said that, of the 4600 bushfires lit in the last fire season, 21 of those were accidental and started by campfires or power tools and that six people were charged as a result. He said the heavy penalties under the law were because accidentally-lit fires and arson fires had the same result property damage, serious injury or death.
While people are able to use their own barbecue facilities in areas such as Silvan Reservoir Park, no flames are able to be lit - including on barbecues during days of total fire ban. Mr Hoogland said the parks’ carry-in, carry-out policy applied to fire beads and barbecue fuels, as they were unable to be disposed of on-site, and it was visitors’ responsibility to have appropriate containers. “We are investigating providing facilities around disposal, but we don’t have them in place, so it doesn’t give people the right to effectively start fires,” he said. “There is the potential for it to burn unchecked and unnoticed, and head into the bush where it’ll be uncontrollable, and that’s something we don’t want.” For information on Fire Danger Ratings and Total Fire Bans, visit www.cfa. vic.gov.au.

An artist of the cloth By JESSE GRAHAM RESILIENCE in the hills has been studied and turned into art this month, with a visiting artist running workshops to turn stories into clothbased art. Tal Fitzpatrick, a multidisciplinary artist and community development worker, was the Artist in Residence at the Community House from 12-24 January, working on a project about community resilience. She told the Mail that, as part of her PhD research through the Victoria College of Arts (VCA), she engaged with the hills community about resilience and made a special quilt as a result. Ms Fitzpatrick said the people she spoke to had diverse ideas about what resilience meant, though many told her stories about the Ash Wednesday bushfires in 1983. “The first day that I got here, two different people brought me the book about Ash Wednesday, Baked Apples on the Tree,” she said. “Over the last week and a half, people have come and told me different stories about what being in this community means to them and what they think is important about resilience. “Resilience is really diverse, in what gives us the strength to go on.” One of the poignant images on her quilt is a person standing on the roof of the Cockatoo kindergarten, which was inspired by the story of 300 people sheltering inside while firefighters stood on the roof, stopping ember attacks, and in particular, a woman standing on the roof to protest the building’s demolition years later.
Tal Fitzpatrick with her resilience quilt Picture: ROB CAREW project. 133443 The resilience of the natural environment, including that of the critically endangered Helmeted Honeyeaters, is also featured on the quilt. In the lead-up to April’s PAVE festival, Ms Fitzpatrick will be running workshops each Thursday starting on 5 February on making cloth art, to make final works to be exhibited at the festival. The sessions will be run from 10am-2pm at the Emerald Community House, and will cost $40 for all eight sessions. Materials are not included. For more information, call 5968 3881.

Vicky Boyle said that Belgrave Lake Park has areas for dogs, people and platypuses to coexist, especially after the new fence was built. 133546 Picture: JESSE GRAHAM
Protection for platypus By JESSE GRAHAM SENSITIVE platypus habitat will be protected after the government’s Green Army marched through the hills earlier this month, cordoning off special spaces to help the native animals flourish. The Green Army group, in partnership with the Southern Dandenongs Landcare Group and Belgrave Platypus, put up 120 metres of fencing at Belgrave Lake Park through January to protect platypus habitat. Erected on 16 January, the fencing still allows people - and their dogs - to access a 20-metre stretch of the creekline, which has been separated from areas with platypus habitat. President of SDLG, Vicki Boyle, told the Mail that one of the biggest threats to the animal was habitat loss, which occurred when areas near waterways became heavily developed, or animals or people accidentally damaged habitat areas. She said the fence solved this problem.
“Belgrave Lake Park is a wonderful area where dogs can just run amok - they play and run and run and get very hot, and when a dog gets hot, its first instinct is to get to water,” Ms Boyle said. “That’s why we’ve kept this one particular area for dogs and kids - and kids can do just as much damage as dogs.” Green Army Supervisor Martin Forster said the fence allowed people, their pets and the platypus to co-exist in the same space, while ensuring the habitat would be preserved. “Everyone understands that it is a dog park as well, and we wanted to make sure the dogs had an area to play so they could co-exist with each other,” Mr Forster said. “The job was put to us, and Yarra Ranges Council provided all of the resources and tools to do the job, so we got it done. “Everyone’s happy and the guys gained some new skills in how to build a fence.” Other media outlets have
stated that the fence was created to prevent dog attacks, and that dogs had been known to attack, injure and even kill platypuses. However, Ms Boyle, who proposed the fence idea, said that was incorrect. “There has never been a recorded dog attack on a platypus at Belgrave Lake Park,” she said. She said there had been one instance of a fox attacking and taking a platypus at nighttime in a drought season, but that platypuses were nocturnal and that dogs were not a threat. The park is an off-lead area for dogs, and Ms Boyle said the majority of its visitors human or otherwise - were friendly and used the space properly. The Green Army group, which is sponsored by the Community Weed Alliance of the Dandenongs (CWAD), has been stationed in the hills for the last six months. A new group is expected to begin working in the area later this year.

Ranges well represented By JESSE GRAHAM THE Dandenong Ranges were wellrepresented at the Yarra Ranges Council’s Australia Day awards yesterday, with residents and community groups across the hills honoured for their actions. The Patch Primary School’s Michelle Rayner, who has encouraged her students to go the extra mile in creating green spaces at the school, received the Ian De La Rue Community Leadership Award at the ceremony yesterday (Monday 26 January). In 1994, Ms Rayner had yet to start at the school, and while visiting with her young children enrolled, she noticed an overgrown dam and saw the potential for change. The Wetlands Project is the result of that potential, with the once-polluted dam now turned into a rich habitat and reserve, and children at the school have the outdoors as their classroom thanks to Ms Rayner. Meanwhile, Mater Christi student and Narre Warren East resident Caitlin MacDonald received the Ken McIntosh Memorial Award for Young Environmental Achiever of the Year. Mount Evelyn’s Prue Northey, who has chaired the Yarra Ranges Relay for Life for the last two years was named as Youth Citizen of the Year. The town had three other award winners at the ceremony, including former-resident Ben Ellis, who was named Environmental Achiever of the Year; Mayor’s Lifetime Achievement Award-winner, Roger Boness; and resident Andrew Roberts, who received a certificate of recognition. WinHort Yarra Ranges, a group encouraging rural women to become involved in horticultural issues, the Dandenong Ranges Music Council and Project Upwey all scored certificates of recognition, as well.

Kilsyth’s Neil Cameron and the Mooroolbark Lions Club were also Certificate of Recognition recipients. Yarra Ranges Mayor, Maria McCarthy said the awards highlighted the “outstanding contributions” of resi-
dents and community groups. “We are so lucky to have such passionate community members in Yarra Ranges,” Cr McCarthy said. “The award winners have put their communities first and it is important

RSL ready to walk in their memory By JESSE GRAHAM EMERALD RSL is gearing up for a monumental opening in early March, as the Anzac Walk reaches its final construction phase and a very important guest is announced to open the project. On 16 January, Emerald RSL President Peter Maloney announced that Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove would be coming down to open the long-awaited Anzac Walk on 11 March. Mr Maloney said the final phase of construction was underway on the Walk, which will feature information stands detailing the lives of 32 soldiers from Emerald and its surrounds
who died during World War I. Chairman of the organising committee Tony Shovelton said the Anzac Walk opening would be a gigantic celebration, starting the day with a recreation of the return of soldiers in 1920. Mr Shovelton said that soldiers would come into Emerald Station on Puffing Billy with Sir Peter, to be greeted by hordes of people in 1920s’ dress and the HMAS Cerberus naval band, before making their way down to Anzac Place for the ceremony. He said that local school children would be taking part in the event and he encouraged anyone interested to get in contact with the RSL and to
dress in their best 1920s gear for the occasion. “We want to encourage the community to become involved,” Mr Shovelton said. “We would like them to attend on the day ... and if at all possible, to register their interest in dressing in period costume.” He said that those dressed in period clothes would be allowed into the restricted areas of the event and have the chance to take part in a memorable and historic event. When finished, the walk will connect the existing cenotaph at the intersection of Main Road and Kilvington Drive to Anzac Place, adjacent to the
RSL Club, with a new footpath along Memorial Avenue. Anzac Place will be the centrepiece for the Anzac Day Dawn Service, and will feature a Memorial Stone, a Lone Pine Tree grown from the seeds of the original Lone Pine at Gallipoli and a hand-carved wooden statue of the Unknown Soldier, made by Cockatoo artist, Veronica (Ronnie) Sexton. The walk, which has been funded by over $100,000 in grants, has been planned for the last two years and is part of the celebrations for the centenary of World War I. For more information about dressing in period costume for the event, email terry.geddes@hotmail.com.

The Blue Lotus is a cool pad YOU don’t have to be a teeny, tiny fairy to splash around on a lily pad at Yarra Junction’s Blue Lotus Water Garden. As of last week, the garden is home to Australia’s largest Victoria Cruziana Waterlily leaf. Cruziana is a variety of Amazon Lily that has giant lily pads which, because of their network of ribs, have incredible strength. You couldn’t wipe the grin off owner and grower Geoff Cochrane’s face on Saturday, 17 January, when his top performer was measured at 170 centimetres, making it an Australian record. Mr Cochrane said Australia’s previous largest leaf was grown at the Botanical Gardens in South Australia and was 165 centimetres in diameter. Both the Cruziana and the Victoria amazonica are grown in the purpose-built Amazon House glasshouse at the gardens. Over the past few weeks, excite-
ment has grown in pace with the leaf as the tape measure was brought out regularly in anticipation of an Australian record. As the largest leaf in the pond edged its way towards its recordbreaking 170 centimetres, Mr Cochrane’s grandchildren Lily Fairy Kimberley and little brother Charley tested out claims that the lily pads can grow large enough to support the weight of a small child ... or in this case, two! Looking every bit like cheeky little frogs, they splashed around on their lily pad, much to the delight of visitors. While the Amazon Lily’s leaf is its most famous feature, it also produces huge, stunning flowers, over 30 centimetres in size, that open white then gradually turn pink before dying within 48 hours. Visitors to the gardens, which are open for only 14 weeks each year, will now have bragging rights to having seen the biggest leaf in Australia ... in Yarra Junction!

OAM for the garden master By JESSE GRAHAM AN ICONIC Monbulk resident had years of hard work acknowledged yesterday, when he was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the Australia Day Honours. Wesley Fleming, of Monbulk’s Fleming’s Nurseries, received the medal yesterday (Monday 26 January) as part of the annual honours event, which acknowledges the efforts of extraordinary Australians. Mr Fleming, 52, received his medal for service to the horticultural industry and to landscape architecture, and has had a lifelong passion for plants. “What makes me so passionate about it is that it’s who I am,” he said. “I’ve been brought up in the horticulture industry - I also worked at Pizza Hut for two nights, and those are the only two jobs I’ve ever had. “It’s just who I am - it’s not a job, it’s a hobby. It’s a passion. It’s a life.” The nursery was opened in 1918 and has been run by the family ever since - Mr Fleming said even his three adult children are involved in the business. One of Mr Fleming’s prominent accolades is a Best in Show medal at the Chelsea Flower Show, which Mr Fleming entered with designer Phil-
Wes Fleming received a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in yesterday's Australia Day Honours. 133385 Picture: ROB CAREW lip Johnson and a team of volunteers for 10 years. He said a driving force behind his entries in the show, which included elaborate, intricate and jaw-dropping garden designs, was to raise the public profile of the horticulture industry. A strong driver of this, he said, was the increasing pressure of global warming and climate change. “We can (now) talk to government, we can get in front of CEOs, we can achieve what we set out to do, and focus more time and energy and money here in Australia,” Mr Fleming said.
Part of that time and energy has since gone into childhood playground development, which Mr Fleming has worked on with the City of Ballarat and Deakin University. He said that ditching plastic, “McDonald’s-style” play equipment in favour of well-designed natural areas, including gardens and green play areas, was already showing positive results on children at a trial kindergarten. Mr Fleming said he was also passionate about urban development and utilising green spaces properly, and generally improving the world around him.

The march of survivors By JESSE GRAHAM HUNDREDS of people marched down to Belgrave yesterday to mark the eighth annual Belgrave Survival Day. Held on 26 January, Survival Day acknowledges the survival of Indigenous heritage and culture, 200 years after the European arrival in Australia. People of all backgrounds and from towns in the Dandenong Ranges and beyond came down to the event, with a group of about 50 people marching from Belgrave Station down to Borthwick Park, where the event was held. The march was led by Robert Wandin and Justine IndigoRose, who carried large versions of the Indigenous totems, Bunjil the Eagle and Waa the Crow to the event, flanked by others carrying banners and signs. Shortly after the event began at noon, Wurundjeri elder Uncle Bill Nicholson conducted a Welcome to Country ceremony, before Indigenous dance group Alinta performed to the crowd. Organiser Bonnie Zuidland said she was happy with the turnout, noting the large Indigenous attendance at the event. The theme of this year’s Survival Day was Caring for Country, and Uncle Bill said that everyone should have a part in taking care of the world around them. “The old people knew for thousands of years that if the land was sick, so was the people, so we have to care for it and make it healthy,” he said. “If we can build this country back up ... to clean up the rivers,

to help regenerate a lot of the indigenous plants, to get rid of them pests, the land will come back healthy and strong. “We’d like everyone to have a part - even the smallest part will help.” The Mullum Mullum Indigenous Choir, Miss Hood and
Casey Donovan also performed at Survival Day, while groups such as the Yarra Ranges Regional Museum held historical displays and stalls. For more photos, and the full story, see mail.starcommunity. com.au.

PROPERTY OF THE WEEK

A double garage stands next to the home and provides the ideal spot to store cars, a caravan or horse float with its 3.6 metre high remote controlled doors. A huge Colorbond shed is positioned away from the home and is perfect for other machinery and storage of those extra ‘boys toys’. The low maintenance block allows for treetop views and a pretty, relaxed setting in a highly sought-after area of Belgrave Heights. The selling agent says that those buyers who want it all need look no further.

Does the fatter matter? By KATH GANNAWAY DO FATTER goalposts mean players hit the post more often? It’s a much debated question up Warby way that may well be answered when the stats are gathered at the end of Warburton-Millgrove Football Club’s 2015 season. The club’s new $10,000 ‘skinny’ goalposts went in last week, replacing the iconic former SEC concrete posts that have served the club well over the years. Casey MP Tony Smith came through on his $10,000 pre-election promise of new posts and was at the ground last week with Yarra Ranges Councillor Jim Child, club president Rodney Woods and football manager Rodney McKail to test out the theory that skinnier posts are harder to hit. While the concrete electricity pylons have their supporters (Woods said there had been some discussion on the club’s facebook page decrying the loss of the famous/infamous goalposts), they didn’t comply with current league regulations and were potentially costing the club the opportunity to host finals and other major games. Woods said the club would be looking at attracting more of the high-profile games in the future. “I’m very thankful we’ve got the new ones, but it has created a lot of chatter about the heritage aspect ... the old goal posts at Warby had become a bit iconic,” he said. He’s sceptical however about the fat versus skinny conundrum. “There’s still the same width in between the posts and if you’re going to hit one, you’re going to hit it,” he said. Jim Child, who played for Yarra Junction, and who may or may not have put one through the middle of the SEC towers in his day, and McKail who definitely put a few through, point out that circumference doesn’t matter in this case. They point out that both teams are aiming for the same gaps.

The Burras and the Bloods have played hundreds of games with the ‘heritage’ posts which were hard to miss. 133523 Another positive according to Woods is that skinny posts equate to less bulky padding. “It used to be an eight-man job just to put the posts out and put the covers around them, now it’s a one-man job ... so no need now to go missing before the matches,” he joked. Then there’s the question of how to celebrate the new posts when the home and away season starts with a round two match against Monbulk on 18 April. McKail has played all his life at Warburton, so he could be a candidate! But Woods has put in an ambit claim, saying talent rather than longevity should be the determining factor, answering McKail’s suggestion

with “Yeah ... but I was probably better than him.” The banter seesaws around who won the most B&Fs, and who should have won the most B&Fs. “I could have if I’d wanted to,” Woods shoots back. In the end, they both have some club legends in mind for the honour, but that’s another story. Right now, the club is focused on making further improvements, including new lights. “There’s one reason behind these improvements and that’s to better our facilities, which we need to do to keep people coming here, playing here and enjoying the game here,” said Woods. Keeping young players in the game is another focus and the club, in conjunction with Wesburn Ju-
nior Football Club, will run a football clinic for junior players at the Warburton ground on 15 February. It’s open to any junior players and Woods said they were working with the senior league to get some high-profile players along on the day. In the meantime, what is the go with fat and skinny posts? If there’s a mathematical genius out there who can settle the argument with figures as well as logic, or anyone with a view on the matter, the Mail would be interested to hear. Cyclists tackle Everest in the hills By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM CYCLING up Mount Donna Buang may seem a challenging ride, but a group of determined cyclists will climb the mountain nine consecutive times next month. THE riders will be partaking in an “Everesting” event - a ride where cyclists ascend a minimum of 8848 metres to equal one ascent of Mount Everest. There will be 25 specially invited female riders who will attempt nine ascents of Donna Buang in one continuous ride. Andy Van Bergen, organiser of the event, said that Everesting was the ultimate in cycling. “It’s such an achievement to complete a ride
like this and definitely a highlight in a cyclist’s career. It’s no walk in the park.” The collective ride will represent the largest ever Everesting group attempt, and will involve riders from multiple clubs, brands and groups. It will be the first of its kind in Australia. The event is historically significant to Everesting itself, with George Mallory first achieving the climb in the mid-1990s on Mount Donna Buang. George Mallory was the grandson of English Mountaineer George Mallory, who died in an attempt on Mount Everest in the 1930s. This Everesting event, held on the mountain where it was first achieved, will make the attempt of great significance to many road cyclists.
The event will commence from Warburton at midnight and cyclists will ride throughout the day on Saturday, 7 February. A free Domestique ride will also run on the day and the public is invited to come and support the riders by riding a lap with them. A reduced speed will be in place on the day, as well as free hydration and nutrition and a photographer to capture the athletic feats of riders. More information about the free Domestique ride can be found at www.tinyurl.com/InSearchOfUp. Entry is free but riders are encouraged to register prior to the event.
Fine knocks from future stars at Olinda OLINDA JUNIOR CRICKET UNDER-10S are still on a break but training resumes this Wednesday. UNDER-12 (2): Olinda took on fourth-placed St Andrew’s at Manson Reserve in a one-dayer with nine players. Max Thornton (26) and Ziggy Hatherley both retired in the top-order, and were able to come back at the end with a 23-run
partnership to get their team to 8/68. The bowling and fielding were really good as St Andrew’s passed the score in the second-last over to finish at 6/82. Max Thornton again in the action with a wicket and some really quick bowling. Under-12 (5): The team travelled to North Ringwood and gave a polished display. Bowling first, the
team kept the Bulls to 5/59 with Gidi Talmi taking 2/3 off his two overs, and Ethan Blenkiron also picking up 1/5. In reply, they posted a fantastic 7/107 with Tom Price nailing 18, Xander Oldfield finishing at 17 not out, and Hamish Fraser and Lachey Bates both chipping in with 11. Under-14 hosted Ringwood, the team bowled first and had the Rams
all out off the last ball for 96. Jonty Scott claimed 3/9 off two overs and Frank Seal 2/2 off the last over. In reply, the team was on pace early but couldn’t maintain the rate until the end, finishing at 5/88 in reply. Aiden Ardley chipped in with 22 and Marc Feltham soldiered on for 12 not out at the end.

Top spot shot is all but signed, sealed By CHRIS ANDERSON YVCA ROUND 11 has served up a tasty trio of matches in the Yarra Valley’s premier grade D.J. Strachan Shield, with top spot up for grabs, a place in the top four, and a much-needed win for a couple of sides. Hot conditions greeted the players, an opportunity to make any bowling attack toil hard early. However, it was the bowlers who dominated, obviously eager to seek the cool of the pavilion. In the biggest game of the round, Seville is hosting Warburton-Millgrove where top position is up for grabs, as well as a little psychological advantage with finals around the corner. With the game eagerly anticipated, disappointment emerged the winner on day one, as WarburtonMillgrove’s psychological advantage has become more of a visit to the mental institution for the Blues batsmen. Seville batted first and had no answers to the Burra’s all-round attack. As this season has progressed, Warburton-Millgrove has emerged as the team to beat in the premiership race. They have established that they have the best batting line-up in the
competition, but Saturday proved they have a versatile bowling attack to match. The Burras shared the wickets, led by Daniel Lever (3/21), to completely push aside the home team for a dismal 85. Scores under 100 are tough to defend, and although the Blues put on some early pressure, the explosive David Lever’s blistering 54 all but led his team to the chasing target, with the visitors finishing on 3/74. The game now finds itself all but over, with the only question remaining will Warburton-Millgrove chase outright points, or use the remaining overs to bat on and grind their opposition into the turf. The other key match-up is the clash where Yarra Junction is hosting Mount Evelyn with fourth position on the ladder up for grabs. After winning the toss and electing to bat, Yarra Junction’s batsmen let their captain’s good fortune go to waste as they had no match for another consistent bowling display. The Rovers’ bowlers shared the wickets as they put the Eagles under pressure from the first ball. Opener Marcus Hottes was the only batsman showing fight. However, with his wicket falling at 7/51, there was a moment where it looked as if the total would be
rounded out for under 80. A useful partnership from Hayden Wilson (27) and Terry Ottrey ensured the total reached three figures, but it wasn’t much greater as the home team was bowled out for 104. It was a case of the young and the old, or should I say experienced, with the ball as up and coming spinner Jed Thompson (3/15) and veteran Chris Anderson (3/12) led the bowling for the visitors. With Mount Evelyn racing to 30, Yarra Junction were immediately put under pressure, but a brace of wickets from leggie Pat Ford (2/7) gave the home side a sniff of wickets. However, opener Dan Fraser (34 not out) and young gun Jon Williams ensured the Rovers would reach stumps at 2/49 against some good bowling. Although in the driver’s seat, Mount Evelyn is still a way from the target and early wickets from the Eagles could have them well in this contest, but they would have to be quick as the total is well short of the mark. The final contest of the round sees Healesville host Hoddles Creek in a battle between the competition’s strugglers. Both sides have had their mo-
ments this season, but haven’t had the consistency or depth to really challenge the better teams in the competition. Healesville batted first under sunny skies, and the day panned out to be a classic battle between bat and ball. At the end of the day, Healesville finished to be all out for 173. Pace duo Dave Chesney (4/56) and Nick Bark (2/24) continue to show their emerging talents and development as they led Hoddles Creek’s attack, and they had the hosts under some early pressure. However, a rear-guard partnership between the Blood’s star brothers, Scott (65) and Ash (41) Hamer, ensured the home team would bat most of their overs to compile the competitive target. Both sides would be relatively happy with the situation of the game after day one. Hoddles Creek possess enough fire power with the bat that if they can muster some early fortitude to resist a collapse, then a chase of 174 is well within their means. However, Healesville does have an attack with a variety that will ask plenty of questions, and as is the case with young fielding teams, if they get their wind up, they will be hard to keep out.
