■ Bill Crawford spreads message of deadly disease before his passing...

Iron’s a killer By JARROD POTTER

SPREADING the message about a disease which greatly affected his life was Bill Crawford’s last wish. A week before he passed away, he talked to the News about his desire to get the word out about haemochromatosis and the great loves in his life - family, cricket, football and a couple of his favourite vices. William Francis Crawford, Bill to everyone he knew, passed away on Friday after battling liver cancer, triggered by an underlying disease he didn’t know he had until he was well into his fifties. After a pair of strokes 10 years ago, the doctor’s diagnosis was hereditary haemochromatosis - or iron overload - which as the nickname suggests is a condition where the body accumulates too much iron. The excess iron finds its way into muscles and organs, and for Bill it caused the most havoc in his liver where it eventually created cancerous tumours. “We want people to know about this haemochromatosis as the disease is out there - people should be checked for it for a start,” Bill said. “Find out what has to be done about it and not wait until you’re fifty. “It’s hereditary and they’ve got to tell their family - let your family know to be checked.” Bill’s wife Dianne implored anyone with a European background - the primary ethnic group affected by it - to get checked as it can be looked for routine blood test and if found early enough haemochromatosis is treatable and manageable. “We want people to be aware check out the warnings,” Dianne said. “Ask them for a haemochromato-

Bill Crawford was born on 1 September, 1954 and died on 23 January 2015. 133020 Picture: JARROD POTTER sis test - what’s the problem, it’s just a blood test.” He was always surrounded by loved ones - Dianne, his wife of 36 years, his mother Fay, brother Shane, his three sons, three grandchildren and everyone who seemingly ever bumped into the loveable character. The robust right-arm paceman, who played for a long list of Dandenong area cricket clubs including Parkfield,

Lyndale, Parkmore and Dandenong West, loved the sport so much that he even played on his wedding day. By mistake that is, as a rain-delay forced the 1978 grand final to be postponed. It left Bill and Dianne to get married in Tooradin at 11am and drive at a rapid pace down the freeway to Wonthaggi - changing into the whites in the car - to help win the final. But it’s not his individual sporting

successes that mean the most to him Crawford was always keen to see the team come first. He also loved his football and the champion full forward was affiliated either as player or coach with Doveton JFC, Dandenong West juniors, Wonthaggi, Hampton Park, Oakleigh Thirds and Dandenong thirds. As his cancer took a greater hold in September, Crawford was thrilled

to prolong his innings and make it to one last Christmas with his family and said he’ll miss those family moments most of all. “Out of everything - I’ll miss Dianne most,” he said. “You’ll miss everything though you think of things that you’re going to miss and everything relates to everything. “I watch the races during the day, little brother Shane, my grandkids getting married - it’s very hard to put one on top of the other, I’ll miss my mother, Dianne, Kristy (daughter-in-law) and now Mel’s in the family.” He wrote his grandchildren a letter to properly say goodbye, and was grateful to tell them early enough about his disease, so they could also say goodbye to their Pop. Always cheerful, even to the very end, Crawford was a perennial fixture on the boundary at Arch Brown Reserve. He was always at the cricket watching his son Ryan charge in for Berwick - sitting with his transistor radio, form guide and a cooler with a few cigarettes, soaking up the sun and just enjoying everything about being there. It’s that memory of Bill that many will fondly remember now that his innings has ended. Crawford wanted to acknowledge Fowles Auction and the Berwick Cricket Club - players and supporters - for helping him in his final months. Bill is survived by his wife Dianne, mother Fay, children Ryan, Bryce and Shannon, grandchildren Ethan, Beau, Christian and family members Kristy and Mel. Bill Crawford’s funeral was held yesterday (Wednesday) at the Springvale Botanical Cemetery.

Security guard stabbed at tavern

Parking nightmare

A CRANBOURNE man was arrested after allegedly stabbing a security guard at the Hampton Park Tavern on the weekend. It’s understood the 59-year-old man had been evicted from the tavern earlier on Saturday night, before returning about 9.30pm armed with a knife. The man then stabbed a security guard in the tavern’s foyer, before another patron rushed out to help the guard. After a scuffle the offender fell to the ground where he hit his head and was rushed to hospital with suspected bleeding on the brain. The offender was released from hospital the next day and charged with several offences. He is set to appear at the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court in April. The security guard sustained minor injuries to his abdomen and forearm. It’s not believed the guard was involved in the earlier eviction of the Cranbourne man from the tavern. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or file a confidential report at www.crimestoppers.com.au.

By BRIDGET SCOTT TRADERS along a busy street in Cranbourne are fed up with the overflow of cars as the redevelopments at Cranbourne Park continue. Cars have lined the tiny street that is Mundaring Drive for the past nine12 months, much to the disappointment of business owners and residents along the road. Business owners said the extra cars were those of tradesmen and women who were part of the redevelopments happening at the major shopping complex next door. Karen Dixon from Cranbourne Park Chiropractic Centre said she had had patients complain, while some hadn’t been able to access the street at all. “How would an emergency vehicle get through?” she said. “Lots of patients have complained and some have had near misses.” Ms Dixon said she had given up contacting council and said there needed to be some sort of parking restrictions along the road. City of Casey manager for Transport Ms Anitha Ajay said the council regularly inspected parking in Mundaring Drive, Cranbourne. “At the time of previous inspections, parking levels were comparable with other local residential streets with similar facilities and the traffic movement within the street deemed appropriate,” she said. “Once the school term commences, council will further investigate and assess the need for any parking restrictions in Mundaring Drive.” A spokesperson from Cranbourne Park said tradespeople working on site were “currently utilising a new underground car park that provides parking for more than 300

Mundaring Drive business people including Penny Phipps and Sue Lew from the dentist, as well as Karen Dixon from the chiropractor, are fed up with parked cars congesting their street. 133483 Picture: ROB CAREW cars.” “We’ll open this car park when we unveil the transformed Cranbourne Park in late March,” they said. Ms Dixon said traders were “fed up”, and with cars double parked on each side of the road it was very dangerous. Penny Phipps and Sue Lew from

the dentist across the road from Ms Dixon’s practice have also had trouble, and said one of their customers was hit when exiting the car park, with their car ending up a write off. They said the added traffic and cars had deterred some customers from making appointments and said they had looked elsewhere. Both businesses have been along

the road for more than 10 years, and the businesswoman agreed nothing like this has happened before. “It becomes a one-way street,” Ms Lew said. Ms Dixon said she was aware of parking spaces available within the complex and said there was only so long people along Mundaring Drive can put up with it.

POLICE have seized a large amount of cannabis with a combined street value of $1 million from properties in Berwick and Cranbourne North. Police raided both houses this month as part of an ongoing investigation, but it’s not believed the two are linked. A 44-year-old man was arrested after police raided the property in Baddeley Circuit, in Cranbourne North, on Thursday 8 January. A 20-year-old man was also arrested on Thursday 22 January after police raided a second property in Venables Court in Berwick. Detective Senior-Constable Andrew Pybus said it was good to get the cannabis “off the streets”. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or file a confidential report at www.crimestoppers.com.au.

Lock it up, will you? POLICE are again urging Casey residents to keep their cars locked after a dozen were robbed in two Hallam streets on Sunday night. It’s understood the 12 cars had been left unlocked in Saffron Drive and Fitzgerald Drive. Police are reminding residents to lock their cars as incidents of car theft continue to rise in Casey. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or file a confidential report at www.crimestoppers.com.au.

By BRIDGET SCOTT A FORMER soldier from Cranbourne has helped spearhead a rehabilitation program for men and women wounded at war. Sean Mulqueen, who was an engineer in Afghanistan, knows the harsh reality that many people face after they return from war. With this in mind, Sean has set out to help others who face both physical and mental barriers upon their return from battle zones. Sean spoke at an event held at Casey Fields in Cranbourne last week called the Walking Wounded, which aimed to raise funds to send soldiers and their families to walk the Kokoda Track. Local accountant Silvio Marinelli helped to co-ordinate

the event which raised nearly $9000 and will help send one person over to walk the trail. Mr Marinelli said walking the track was a small step to help soldiers on their way to recovery after they had returned from overseas. “It’s a very humbling and emotional journey,” he said. Mr Marinelli set out on the trek alongside Sean and another former soldier Michael Clarke, last year. Sean said it was a “stepping stone” and a way for soldiers to interact normally again. “The idea is to get soldiers walking with civilian people and interacting and learning,” he said. “It’s to help them realise there are difficulties in life whatever it is you do, and that

people do care and appreciate what you have done.” Sean said he did it for the first time as a returned solider in 2011 alongside 30 other friends who he was with in Afghanistan, plus 30 corporate people from Brisbane. Sean said it was important for people to understand the slow process which was rehabilitation. “It’s going to take some time,” he said. “It’s a very slow process and takes small steps.” Sean, who has now walked the track twice, said his main focus was to send ex-servicemen over there, but wouldn’t dismiss the prospect of doing it again himself. “The Kokoda Track is a good starting point,” Sean said.

On the road to zero By CASEY NEILL THE dream of a zero road toll continues to drive Leading Senior Constable Glen Ziino after 20 years of patrolling Victorian roads. “I didn’t used to think that it was achievable, but when you ask people what’s an acceptable road toll for their family, they say ‘zero’,” he said. “So what’s an acceptable goal for society or what should we aim for? The answer has to be zero. “I think we can get close.” The Berwick 44-year-old joined the police force in 1991. “A long time ago I dropped out of university and just fell into the police force,” he said. “I just applied not really knowing what I was getting myself in for. “The next thing they phone you up and say ‘you’re starting at the academy on the 19th of November’ and you go ‘oh, OK’.” Lead Sen Const Ziino said he quickly knew the highway patrol was his goal. “I always had an interest in motorcycles so once I was there and hopped on a bike... I’ve never looked back,” he said. This year he notches up his 10th year with Casey Highway Patrol, which he joined after a decade at the Brunswick unit. “I’ve been to a lot of serious collisions over the years. You do remember the fatalities,” he said. “I’ve been to a few motorcycle fatalities that are

probably a little bit hard because you roll up on a police motorcycle and you’ve got a vulnerable road user, being a motorcyclist, who’s lying on the ground. “It’s a little bit hard to deal with, but I suppose you just put the hat on. “You do what you need to do from a police point of view.” Lead Sen Const Ziino said most collisions were preventable. “That’s probably what drives most highway patrol members,” he said. “Ultimately what we’re there to do is to reduce the number and severity of collisions. “We do it through enforcement and education, so if we’re not investigating collisions we’re out there picking people up for speeding, using the phone, not wearing seatbelts, driving around unlicensed... “People don’t often stop and think that it’s those little things that can have big ramifications when things do go wrong.” He said the vast majority of people tried to do the right thing. “When they get picked up for a relatively minor offence it costs them money out of their hip pocket and it’s a reminder,” he said. “And, hopefully, it sticks with them and it brings them into line to do the right thing. “I love riding motor bikes and I honestly believe in what I’m doing.”

Letters Sensation sells I AM a resident of Waverley Park Estate of 23 years and have been moved to take offence at the article (A Lawless Land, Cranbourne News 22 January). I wish to speak on behalf of all residents of Lawless Drive, Cranbourne North. I have no problem with publishing facts. What I do find offensive in the extreme is the embellishment of fact with fiction in order to sensationalise and sell newspapers. The article, whilst no doubt accurate as to the felony and subsequent raid by Victoria Police, has deliberately exploited, maligned and damaged all residents of Lawless Drive in order to create sensation and attract readers. By painting Lawless Drive as “a lawless land” or, pejoratively, a street that has “lived up to its name” purposely makes no distinction between the felonious residents and every other law abiding, honest and well inten-

Sad stigma SUCH is the impact of suicide on the whole of our society that even “vandals“ seem to get in on it (Message Out, News, 22 January). It’s sad but so true and painful that so many people choose this path, from school kids to returned soldiers and everything in between. There’s been a lot of progress made in the field of mental health in the last few years, with many politicians and other high profile people coming out and supporting this worthy cause. But, unfortunately, some barriers still exist. Bullying or ridiculing, lack of awareness or acceptance, not speaking out for fear of losing one’s job are still issues that need to be addressed. The stigma attached to mental health seems hard to shake off. Florin Bordei, South Eastern Bipolar Network, Hampton Park.

Re: Teresa’s moving tale THIS is indeed such a moving story which almost left me in tears. Even though I did not encounter a similar story but I do have family members whom I adore so much and treasure. Hence, I could somehow feel the fear, grief, and pain that Teresa had unwillingly gone through. To lose a family member is heart-wrenching enough, and to know that he/she died in vain makes it even more unbearable. Thankfully Teresa, her siblings, and her mother were all spared from the atrocity of the war-stricken era. Marcio, via web.

tioned resident of Lawless Drive. To give you a feel for my allegations that the News has damaged residents of Lawless Drive simply search Google for “land on Lawless Drive”. It is reasonable to assume that an interested buyer of property in our area would Google such a search, among others, only to find “A Lawless Land” on the Cranbourne News on the prime first search page. Is it drawing a long bow to suggest that an interested buyer would avoid purchasing a property here? Now that the label has been published on the net, it is for all to read in perpetuity. I have lived happily on this street and in this neighbourhood for almost as long as it has existed and never found it to be “a lawless land” or a street which has “lived up to its name..” as implied by the article. If you would take the time to have a drive down Lawless Drive, I’m sure you would find it to be considerably different to the glib, insensitive and irresponsible picture you have allowed your newspaper to print. Microchips for update By CASEY NEILL ADAM Haines is urging pet owners to update microchip contact details after battling to have his frail, 19-year-old dog returned to his care. City of Casey rangers picked up Buddha, a lhasa aspo, from the Animal Emergency Centre in Hallam and took it to the Cranbourne pound. He went missing from behind locked gates in Mr Haines’ Keysborough front yard about 7pm on Sunday 25 January. “We spent hours searching for him,” he said. “He can’t walk the few metres back from the park. He’s partly deaf, he’s partly blind. “He’s been to the vet a couple of times in the past three months, because we’re moni-

toring now - we’re monitoring for that time that he can’t go on any longer. “I knew someone had picked him up.” Mr Haines encountered trouble retrieving his beloved pooch when Buddha’s microchip details were linked to his former partner. “My ex and I split up 17 years ago, and he was microchipped 18 years ago,” he said. “When you’re young and you’re living life, you take for granted your little mates. “Losing him and not being able to find him was one thing, but to know he’s been locked away because of my irresponsibility ... “People need to be aware of what could happen.”

Casey community safety manager Caroline Bell said the council had some concerns with the dog’s health and well-being and sought a vet report. She said on Tuesday that the council would contact Mr Haines to discuss the vet’s report and to make arrangements for the pet’s collection. “To ensure lost pets can be reunited with their owners, we’d like to remind residents that all pets should be registered with their council, microchipped and kept securely in their yard,” Ms Bell said. She said it was also important for residents to update their registration details with their council and microchipping database Central Animals Register when they moved house.

Summer is well booked SUMMER is an ideal time to read a book. And the Casey-Cardinia Library Corporation is reminding students throughout the municipality of this fact. Last Friday, the corporation held a special finale to its Summer Reading Club at the Rivergum Performing Arts Centre in Hampton Park. Audio book narrator and performer Stig Weymyss was the special guest for the event, entertaining the audience with his captivating stories.

Sharp mourned NARRE WARREN SENIORS OPENING day for 2015 at Narre Warren Seniors was on Wednesday 21 January, with 92 members present. Meeting and greeting was as warm as the weather outside, with talk of how Christmas was spent. However, underlying all the chatter, was a deep sadness at the passing of beloved member Rene Sharp, on 20 January, aged 91. The group’s flag flew at half-mast and a minute’s silence was observed in her honour. Rene will be most sadly missed. Door prize winners were Marion Allen, Reba Bell, Bert Austin and Monica Chai. To celebrate Australia Day, the raffle prizes were seven koalas sporting the national flag. They were won by Sylvia Fielding, Marion Allen, Frank Cranston, George Carver, Estella Huergo, Rae Barfield and Ron Roe. Starting off the entertainment for the year was Savio Gonsalvez with his quiet, inimitable style of old and new favourite vocals and excellent acoustic guitar accompaniment.

Legacy upheld By BRIDGET SCOTT AN ANNUAL fund-raiser in honour of the late Jared Dunscombe will be held at Lysterfield Park next month to raise money for the charity One Disease. Jared’s sister Jonelle Colabufalo will spearhead plans for the five-kilometre walk on 21 February to keep the memory of her brother alive. Jared was killed at age 31 in 2013 when he was taking part in a Ride for Conference and was struck by a truck and trailer after falling off his bike. He was a passionate and community-minded man and his family wishes to continue his legacy. “We’ve started a fund in memory of him to keep up his charity work,” Ms Colabufalo said. “We want to make it a major, annual fund-raiser.” “It’s a chance for anyone who knew him to remember him on the anniversary of his death, and anyone else who has been inspired by his story.” Jared’s family and friends currently sponsor a community called Birritjimi, more than 600 kilometres east of Darwin with no medical clinic. Ms Colabufalo said the work of One Disease was important in these types of areas to help eliminate diseases such as scabies. Registrations will take place at 8am the morning of the event which will progress around the Hallam North Road walking tracks - the event is open to all.

About 200 people turned out for the walk last year which was held at Silvan Reservoir Park. With hopes to expand the

event, all funds raised will help to continue Jared’s charity work. Ms Colabufalo spoke at an official function for the fund last year and said: “Our aim is to use Jared’s determined attitude to continue to inspire us to ensure that we make the Jared Dunscombe Fund a long lasting success and a long-term legacy for Jared.”

A DEDICATED Doveton woman took out the top award for the City of Casey on Monday when she was named as the 2015 Casey Citizen of the Year. Veronica Hill said she is still in shock after being announced as the winner on Australia Day during an official ceremony at the City of Casey Council Chambers. “I was sitting back enjoying the evening and thinking it was all very good,” she said. “I never thought in my wildest dreams (I would win).” Mrs Hill has been heavily involved with her community where she and her late husband Jim started up the little athletics club in 1972. The volunteer is also a life member of the Dandenong Little Athletics Club and in recent years has dedicated much of her time to the Doveton Show where she has been a treasurer on the committee. Mrs Hill said it’s been a “pleasure to work with children through various types of groups. “It’s a joy to be able to encourage young people to be the best they can be,” she said.

Casey Citizen of the Year 2015 Veronica Hill, middle, with City of Casey Mayor Mick Morland, and left, wife Kay Morland. 133760 “I just love that sort of thing.” Mrs Hill said she has been involved with a “multitude of different things” but her main love would be the little athletics club. “When my children were young there wasn’t a great deal for them to do,” she said. “We travelled elsewhere to let them do little athletics and decided there was a need for it in this area. “Together with my husband we helped start one, but he was the driving force.” Other award recipients on the day included Brooke

McGowan-Grills who was announced as the Casey Young Citizen of the Year, and Rita Hartney who is the 2015 Casey Senior Citizen of the year. Joshua Beaver was named as the Casey Sportsperson of the Year, while Casey Non-resident of the Year was Mak Utatao. The Casey Community Event/Activity of the Year went to the Hampton Park Central Multicultural Food Festival and the Cranbourne-Narre Warren Relay for Life won the Casey Community Fundraising Event/ Activity of the Year. Jasmine Giesen was also presented with a Highly Commended Certificate.

An exciting range of educational programs are set to be offered through face-to-face classroom education in 2015. Health, Fitness and High-Performance Athlete Development nationally accredited programs are being made available in Cranbourne throughout 2015. Traditionally, students wanting to pursue study in these areas have been restricted to online programs or the need to relocate to metropolitan areas. These programs will ensure high-quality and affordable education is available within the region. With intakes starting in late February 2015, our programs will provide industry ready training that will address skill shortages in the Health and Fitness areas of our local communities. One of the programs will be tailored to high-performance local athletes and along with offering students education and training. It will also support them in improving overall performance in their chosen sport, with guest ambassadors and mentors making visits throughout the program, from local athletes to national athletes.

With plenty of study options available, ranging from part time, day, and evening programs, all types of learners are welcome, and will be able to tailor programs to suit your lifestyles.

Australia Day

Nucleus of nation building AUSTRALIA Day was in full swing at Hampton Park this week. The community flocked from all directions to visit Arthur Wren Hall where the Hampton Park Progress Association held a special Day of Nations event. The free event ran from 9am to noon and included a special Aussie breakfast for guests, multicultural entertainment, face painting, jumping castles, an animal farm and community group displays. The Day of Nations ambassador was Dr Nouria Salehi, a highly respected nuclear physicist and biophysicist, who was born in Afghanistan. Dr Salehi finished her post-graduate studies in France before moving to Australia in 1981, where for 30 years she has combined her career with volunteering in both Afghanistan and Australia. News photographer Rob Carew dropped by the Day of Nations event to capture all the action. For more coverage of the Australia Day celebrations in Casey, turn to pages 18 and 71.

IGA NARRE WARREN SOUTH MEAT SPECIALS IGA Narre Warren South have recently promoted Cameron to the position of Meat Manager with Chris, our previous Assistant Manager, being welcomed back to the business. Cameron and Chris have a capable team with Billy, a fully qualified butcher who has recently joined them and Matt our third year apprentice. All are supported by Bridgette, one of our meat wrappers. The entire focus of our meat team is to bring you the best quality meat available at a competitive price and unlike a lot of our major competitors all our meat is prepared on site and not delivered from a production facility. This enables us to ensure that our meat is of the highest quality and allows our customers to talk to our butchers with any special requests or needs which they may have. So for your quality meat requirements, or any special cuts which you need, drop in and have a chat to Cam and his team. Chris, Matt and Billy (back row) Bridgette and Cam (front row)

THE BRACKEN IS A BONUS AT only $189,000 for 26 squares, The Bracken ticks all the must-have boxes when it comes to a smart family home. Red Bluff Homes has designed The Bracken with discerning family buyers or retirees in mind. The spacious and modern design offers a layout that flows smoothly from the smart entrance through to the fantastic optional outdoor living area at the opposite end of the home. In between is a master suite complete with ensuite and walk-in robe, a theatre room, three additional bedrooms, separate laundry, kitchen and large open plan meals/ family area. Flexibility is the cornerstone of The Bracken’s thoughtful design. The team at Red Bluff Homes know that each family is different and that when it comes to utilising space, choice and flexibility are essential. With this in mind, The Bracken can easily be converted to a four-bedroom home by utilising the spacious retreat adjacent to the master suite. Alternatively, the retreat can be used as a study, perfect for anyone running a home business, or incorporated into the master suite creating a luxurious private oasis for busy parents. The kitchen is stylish and functional with walk-in pantry, and stainless steel appliances. The kitchen looks out over the open-plan meals/ family area to the optional outdoor living area at the rear. The impressive entertaining area would be perfect for barbecues and parties and also provides an outdoor play space for children. Sliding doors off the family/meals area

create a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor living. Carpet and tiles and service connections are standard with The Bracken, as is the use of low-maintenance Colorbond on the roof,

guttering and downpipes. Add your choice of any of the following at no extra cost: * Roofed outdoor area; * Nine-foot ceilings;

* Stone benchtops in the kitchen; or * Evaporative cooling. For further details and a copy of the inclusions list and floor plan contact Red Bluff homes on 9709 0400.

Step up to our award winning Milan, voted HIA’s Best Display Home 2014.* The Milan 29 from our Aspire range has just won the 2014 HIA Victorian division Best Display Home between $250,001 – 300,000. It’s an architect designed home ofering afordable luxury, space and light and a range of innovative features. The sun court, for instance, actually increases the usable interior space and floods the living areas with light. Or as the judges said: “A very open home that gives the impression it is bigger than it actually is.

“Excellent workmanship, attention to detail and a feeling of spaciousness.” – HIA Judges

You can sense the diference immediately with generously proportioned spaces that flow together naturally to create vistas and extended views with picture windows usually only found in more expensive homes. The high level of luxury inclusions also caught the eye of the judges who said the Caesarstone benches, Franke sinks and Smeg appliances “represent value for money”. The overall style and elegance of this four bedroom home is typified by the raised ceiling above the dining area. Visit the Milan today – and judge for yourself.

PLACES throughout the City of Casey were packed with patriots on Monday as huge crowds gathered to celebrate Australia’s finest tradition. The Balla Balla Community Centre and Tooradin Foreshore were among several locations filled with people to celebrate Australia Day on 26 January. CHARM in collaboration with other local groups presented a day filled with free activities at Balla Balla, and more

than 100 people were left wide eyed with various types of entertainment on offer. Pianist Hoang Pham was one of the talented acts to take to the stage, and said this was his first time playing in the City of Casey and he hoped to come back for a second time. Following this, the Lions Club of Balla Balla presented a free open air sunset cinema with a free barbecue, activities and live entertainment. A movie was screened to keep the entire family entertained for the night. Cloe Sera from Narre Warren sang to the crowds at Tooradin on Monday.

TENNIS clubs throughout the area have paired up with the City of Casey to make a racquet as they prepare to present a ‘nothing less than ace’ Casey Tennis Week. With activities set to kick off on Sunday 1 February, around 27 events have been planned for various locations including local tennis clubs. There will be something for everyone with choices ranging from club open days, social games, Hot Shots coaching, come and try sessions, a family fun day and a cardio tennis session. Council will also host its own event, a come and try totem tennis activity on Wednesday 4 February from 12.30pm until 3pm at the Casey Civic Centre. The activities will run through until February 8. City of Casey Mayor invited everyone to come down and have a hit at any of the events on offer. “Now in its seventh year, Casey Tennis Week gives those that have never tried the sport the chance to test it out, an opportunity for those who want to get back into it to do

so and gives tennis enthusiasts more reason to get out and enjoy the sport they love,” Cr Morland said. He said with the Australian Open now upon us, people should be eager to come down and have a swing. “Council is committed to increasing physical activity, sport participation and creating a healthy community through initiatives like Casey Tennis Week,” he said. “This event also showcases many of Casey’s tennis clubs, their great facilities and the wonderful volunteers who run them, as well as giving them the opportunity to seek more members.” Casey Tennis Week is proudly supported by the City of Casey and Tennis Victoria. For a full list of events to be held during Casey Tennis Week visit www.casey.vic.gov.au/caseytennisweek <http://www.casey.vic. gov.au/caseytennisweek>. You can also visit a City of Casey Customer Service Centre for a program or call Customer Service on 9705 5200.

A NARRE WARREN-based dance school continues to go from strength to strength. Four students from Backstage Dance Academy qualified for the Showcase National Dance Championships held in Queensland this month, with the dance school achieving its best results since starting up seven years ago. Sophie Beaty, Ashley Diamond, Tahlia Williams and Kiara Drzewinksi all qualified for the national competition, held at Jupiters Hotel and Casino on the Gold Coast. Backstage Dance Academy director Jessica said the Showcase national competition was held over several days, from 12 January to 19 January. “For Showcase, the regional competitions are run all over Australia and New Zealand, and those students who receive a high enough mark qualify for the national competition,” Ms Solomon said. Sophie Beaty, 11, was crowned the national champion for her age

After celebrating its 60th birthday in 2014, the Victorian Caravan, Camping & Touring Supershow is on the move in 2015 from Caulfield Racecourse to our new home at Melbourne Showgrounds from February 11 to 16. Presented by the Caravan Industry Association Victoria (CIA VIC), the move marks the dawn of a new era for Australia’s biggest outdoors show with even more of the latest and greatest caravans, camping gear and outdoors accessories on display than was previously possible. The size of the new venue will truly make the 2015 Supershow the biggest yet. The additional space will also enhance the show experience for patrons with extra food outlets and rest areas, an abundance of entertainment, product demonstrations and seminars at the Supershow. There will be something to enjoy for every member of the family with fantastic prizes to be won, free show bags, fishing, the Yamaha Super tank, cooking

group in Elite Ballet and Elite Lyrical this month. Ms Solomon said all the students who qualified helped to achieve the dance school’s best national Showcase results yet. “Sophie was super happy, we expected her to do really well but she exceeded everyone’s expectations as far as taking out so many national titles,” she said.

ONE of Casey’s new art spaces is getting set to host two exhibitions in one space as part of a new and exciting council venture. The joint exhibition will run from Wednesday 4 February to Friday 27 March and will feature works from local artists Marie Warnecke and Jenny Conn. The Civic Centre Art Space will host the artworks and Mayor Mick Morland encourages the community to come along and experience some local talents. Ms Warnecke’s watercolour paintings titled Atmosphere and Aesthetics, focus on the moods of nature. Her works feature sunsets, wind streaked clouds and lowered skies. Ms Conn’s work, which will run alongside her fellow artist’s displays, is an exhibit of ceramics and clay jewellery. Ms Conn takes inspiration from various features from her own garden and incorporates these into her artworks. Councillor Morland commended the work of both artists adding they are well worth seeing. “Both artists are well-known locally and beyond for their talent, making this an exhibition not to be missed,” he said. “Ms Warnecke is a member of the Berwick Artists Society and an award winning watercolourist. “Her works have been exhibited widely across Australia, having held successful exhibitions in Townsville and Magnetic Island, before moving to Victoria.” “Ms Conn is an experienced ceramic artist and jeweller, having exhibited her work widely, as well as teaching ceramics and pottery at TAFE colleges. “She has also run workshops in the City of Casey as part of the popular Winter Arts Festival.”

It’s a grand slam plan

Clydesdale power By JARROD POTTER

Seaming his way into the Australian All Abilities team is Endeavour Hills cricketer Lachie Macrae. 133227 Picture: JARROD POTTER

Lachies’ colours… green and gold By JARROD POTTER A CHANCE turf outing set the wheels in motion to earn Lachie Macrae a run in the green and gold. After representing the Ferntree Gully and District Cricket Association (FGDCA) - and helping earn the association claim the VMCU Jim Beitzel Under-16 Shield - Macrae’s taste for turf guided him down the hill and towards Endeavour Hill’s Sydney Pargeter Reserve. His turf cricket passion is paying dividends as the Eagles’ left-arm livewire earned his place in the Australian All Abilities cricket team, set to square off in a tri-series against South Africa and England. The 17-year-old Lysterfield bowler, who has a mild intellectual disability, worked his way through the Victoria Vikings All Abilities team and a series of tryout sessions before earning a spot in a Brisbane training camp at the Cricket Australia Centre of Excellence. Put through his paces by former Australian paceman Andy Bichel, Macrae relished his chance and was selected in the final 14man squad for the INAS Tri-Series, starting 16 March in Melbourne. “I was pumped to make it,” Macrae said. “Hopefully it can help me be a better cricketer in the future and I can learn a lot. “I did a Brisbane training course - I went to the MCG to do a training session and they cut it down to 32… I trained for a few weeks and they picked the squad of 14 and (then) I went to Brisbane to do a four-day training session. “Great facilities and it was amazing up there - great experience.” Charging through the crease with his left-arm pacers, Macrae wants to not only impress with his bowling, but hopes to add another string to his bow and make in-roads with his batting to expand as an all-rounder. A 2012-13 hat-trick with Lysterfield capped off his junior career in style and he hopes to add to a burgeoning collection of Sub-District wickets - having snared 34 wickets already in his first two seasons of turf cricket. He’s not only a top talent in cricket, as Macrae represented the state in the School Sport Australia Cross Country Championships in Albany, Western Australia last year, finishing fourth in the Athletes with Disability (AWD) three-kilometre run. Macrae wanted to thank his parents, the Lysterfield and Endeavour Hills Cricket Clubs, Cricket Victoria and Cricket Australia for their support.

A CHANGING of the guard, at least temporarily, has been a boon for Dandenong Rangers’ WNBL basketballer Aimie Clydesdale. Following mid-season knee surgery for Dandenong’s chief playcaller Kathleen Macleod, her absence gave plenty of opportunity for Endeavour Hills-based Clydesdale (13 points, 7 assists) to step up and show her potential in the starting line-up. Clydesdale has made a seamless move from the bench to a starter after Macleod’s injury two rounds ago, and has proved she is a star on the rise in the midst of a breakout WNBL season. With 13 points and seven assists in Dandenong’s 95-64 win over Adelaide on Friday night, all signs are pointing up for the 21-year-old. “It came about in pretty unfortunate circumstances - losing Kath - and they’re hard shoes to fill but I’m just trying to use the opportunity and just give something to the team,” Clydesdale said. “Obviously I can’t produce as many points as Kath or whatnot, but I’m just trying to bring what I can. “Trying to use my speed - people always tell me I’m fast - so I’m trying to take advantage of it.” With four years of WNBL experience under her belt, Clydesdale believes her success has come about in the right way as she’s earned the coach’s confidence to give her the ball in Macleod’s absence. “I guess just putting in the work - I’ve been with Dandenong for four or five seasons now so I did my time and I’m slowly getting better and Mark’s (coach Mark Wright) having more confidence to put me on the court,” Clydesdale said. It helps to have an Olympic Games gold medallist and a pair of Australian Opals running the court alongside you and Clydesdale has relished lining up with WNBA stars Cappie Pondexter and Penny Taylor. “It’s been really good - they make you look better than you are - all I have to do is get them the ball

Aimie Clydesdale, pictured in Dandenong's win last week over Bendigo, has loved the step up to WNBL starting point guard. 130928

Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS and they’ll finish it,” Clydesdale said. “They’re awesome to learn off Penny Taylor, Cappie Pondexter and Kath I’ve learned so much off over the last few years and it’s been really good.” Rangers’ coach Mark Wright was impressed with Clydesdale’s

progression and thinks she has done everything right in her first major step up to the starting five. “I thought Aimie Clydesdale was absolutely wonderful and it was her best game (on Friday),” Wright said. “She’s revelling in that responsibility to being the starting point guard and it looks like it’s the emer-

gence of Aimie Clydesdale. “I’m so excited for her - she’s grabbed the opportunity with both hands.” Dandenong sits third on the WNBL ladder and face West Coast at home in the ABC Match of the Week, from 3pm on Saturday afternoon.

It’s anyone’s game really CRANBOURNE batsman Ben Maroney looked like a cat on a hot tin roof on Saturday as the top-of-the-table Eagles headed for their first loss of the season against Hallam Kalora Park. The Turf1 Division of the Dandenong District Cricket Association was thrown wide open on the weekend, with third-placed Berwick also going down to Parkfield to leave its finals hopes in jeopardy. Berwick and Cranbourne now face tough runs home before squaring off in what’s sure to be a season-defining last-round encounter. Swans face Thunderbolts By JARROD POTTER

Earning a place on a high-calibre team and finishing strongly in the National Road Championships is hopefully the start of a better 2015 Picture: BART HAZEN/HIGH5 DREAM TEAM for cyclist Sam de Riter. 133662

Give Sam a High5 By JARROD POTTER CROSSING the line was the main battle to overcome for Berwick cyclist Sam de Riter. De Riter, 26, could not believe her seventh place finish at the recently held Cycling Australia Road National Championships in Buninyong, considering a challenging last 12 months. She battled bravely through a torturous 2014, spent mostly in rehabilitation rather than pumping the pedals, as she has struggled to rein

in a number of medical set-backs. Cycling was put on hold as de Riter underwent treatment for a bulging spinal disc, MRI and brain scans to determine the cause of leg numbness, which was eventually diagnosed as peripheral neuropathy - a condition which affects nerves and the messages her brain sends the rest of the body. “Basically you just have to work through it, and I worked through it, and think I’m a much stronger person for it today,” de Riter said.

Despite the arduous rehabilitation just to get back on the bike let alone compete at the elite level - de Riter does not regret the battles she’s gone through to return to competitive cycling as it has made her a better person. “It’s been great - I guess a little bit was unexpected and a good surprise,” de Riter said. “More than anything I was relieved to finish - seventh is amazing and any other year I think I would have been completely stoked.

“It sounds stupid that I wasn’t, but it was such a big lead up and I didn’t know that I’d make it so I was just relieved.” 2015 is panning out a lot better already for de Riter as High5 Dream Team took a chance and signed her up for this year’s National Road Series, despite an horrific 2014 off the bike - a signing that de Riter could not be more grateful to receive. Her first race for High5 will be the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race starting 31 January.

PREMIER CRICKET - Round 15 (day 1) A CAVALCADE of Test players took Casey Fields by storm on Saturday as Casey-South Melbourne (9/308) took first day honours despite the best efforts of Dandenong and their Test match front-line attack. James Pattinson (0/41) took the new rock and was lethal against the Casey-South Melbourne top order, with a number of his 140-kilometre thunderbolts. After his first ball - finding Josh Holden’s (13) edge to Peter Sweeney, Siddle also struggled to make in-roads against a dogged Swans’ batting order. It brought to the crease Casey’s Test match spearhead - wicketkeeper-batsman Matthew Wade (61). Wade saw off the worst of Pattinson and Siddle and reversed the fortunes in a stellar 126-run partnership with Lachie Sperling (68). The wickets would finally come as Dan Doran (4/75) and James Wilcock (2/41) picked off middle order scalps, including the important scalp of Wade as he edged Wilcock through to David Alleyne behind the pegs, while Sperling holed out to Sri Lankan Test opener Kaushal Silva off Doran. The young Swans flew highest as Sperling and former Tooradin batsman Ryan Eaton (74) took the star-studded Panthers to the cleaners. Eaton notched another half-ton partnership for the Swans in tandem with Shane Maggs (10) before the tail wagged hard as keeper Devin Pollock (27 not out) and Simon Black (20) pushed the tally to 308 by day’s end. Casey batted through to stumps and has the tough choice whether or not to declare over the weekend and set Dandenong a terrifying triplecentury chase on Saturday. Kooweerup rising star Adam McMaster (1/42) made his two-day Premier debut over the weekend as he stormed in and claimed his first wicket - Casey captain Chris Hall - in his 10 overs. On return from Australian and Big Bash duties, Dandenong spearhead Peter Siddle snared a wicket with his first ball. 133584 Picture: JARROD POTTER

ENDEAVOUR Hills will be batting to keep possession of sixth spot on the VSDCA South/East ladder after Malvern (8/256) posted a challenging total at Sydney Pargeter Reserve. The Eagles bowling attack started well enough, with Richard Saniga (3/45) and the league’s leading wicket taker Chris Pereira (2/48) having the visitors at 4/81, but Malvern’s middle-order of Michael Jones (73), Leigh Alford (56) and Nick Gill 44 not out) batted beautifully to see their side through to its allotted 80 overs. Vaughan Baxter (2/58) toiled hard to take two late wickets and take his tally to 20 for the season. The Eagles will need their two leading run scorers, Zach Allen (307) and Ben Swift (283), to fire this week to avoid wasting a great start to the season. The Eagles won four of their first five games, but have slipped in recent times, winning just one of their last four. Allen and Swift will be with-

Outright, outright and… another outright By JARROD POTTER DANDENONG DISTRICT CRICKET ASSOCIATION - Turf 1 Round 8 (day 2) IN A day of DDCA carnage, maximum points were seized by Heinz Southern Districts, Springvale South and North Dandenong while Hallam Kalora Park created the upset of the season defeating Cranbourne. CRANBOURNE v HALLAM KALORA PARK There are few challenges more severe than a 266-run chase in the heat as Cranbourne (193) found out the hard way against Hallam Kalora Park (6/266). Set the whopping tally to chase in ideal conditions at Casey Fields, the Eagles’ start was sluggish as Brayden Roscoe (37) and Jake Harrington (20) saw off the new ball and worked their way towards tea. Harrington was skittled by Jordan Hammond (1/22) and with Clint Ayres (4) leaving the field ‘retired hurt’, the Cranbourne initiative was in dire circumstance.

Enter Cranbourne’s best chance of victory - captain Steve Spoljaric (80 not out). The three-time Wookey Medallist burdened the chasing responsibility as he batted throughout the day to keep Cranbourne alive. Spoljaric just could not muster enough support at the nonstriker’s end as the tail failed to wag hard enough. Spoljaric’s seventh fiftyor-better score this season - with 488 runs at 97.6 - kept the miracle escape feasible however as he ground out crucial runs. Once Ben Maroney (21) fell LBW to William Whyte - a decision that left Maroney shaking his head in dismay as he walked off - the tail collapsed with Cranbourne falling from 2/125 to 7/154 in rapid succession. The chief destroyer was the left-arm spin of Amila Perera (4/65) - who ran through the lower order with aplomb. Martin Kelly (13) showed a little bit of vigour before he was castled by Ben Hall (2/12). Limping back to the middle to make a fist of the chase, Ayres returned from his retirement and saw off 31 balls in a

gallant, but ultimately futile innings as he edged Perera through to last week’s centurion Ben Hilliard. Spoljaric would remain unbeaten as Tim Fathers (1) left the crease as quickly as he arrived, to give Hallam Kalora Park it’s most significant win this season and deliver Cranbourne’s first defeat. The Hawks jump up to sixth - sitting three points outside the four - before its clash with Coomoora while top-of-the-table Cranbourne will face Parkfield - Spoljaric’s first return to Dunblane Street since his off-season departure. COOMOORA v HEINZ SOUTHERN DISTRICTS Solid Coomoora (142 and 159) batting efforts were sadly not enough to earn the Kangaroos their first points of the season as Heinz Southern Districts (7/175dec and 5/128) managed to take the chocolates. Adam Semmens (49) started the rapid chase before Michael Davies (38) and Brent Patterson (31 not out)

charged ahead with declaration in mind. Saliya Saman (2/30) was impressive for the visitors off his 21.2 overs. Saman (61) would back it up with the bat as he proved the only resistance to Heinz - namely master spinner Paul Stockdale (5/59). Needing more than eight-an-over to take the outright, Heinz Southern Districts absolutely flayed the Kangaroos in the second innings - smashing 128 in 15.3 overs. Striking faster and harder than their namesake animal, the Cobras played hit-and-run cricket to take the points. Davies (35 not out), Trevor Davies (18 not out), Justin Davis (23) and Stockdale (23) hit the suitcase out of anything Coomoora pitched up. It pushes the Cobras up to fifth before hosting Berwick while Coomoora remains in the relegation zone as it heads to Hallam Kalora Park. BERWICK v PARKFIELD With hearts and minds firmly locked elsewhere, Berwick (79 and 2/125) was no match for Parkfield (183).

Bulls have the edge By DAVID NAGEL THE stage is set for a block-buster WGCA Premier Division grand final rematch as Cardinia and Kooweerup get set to go toe-to-toe at Gunton Oval on Saturday. Undefeated after 11 rounds, Cardinia is a certainty to finish at the top-of-the-table with its inspirational skipper Neil Barfuss (489 runs and 27 leading) leading the way ... having a season to remember. Barfuss could be as much as 15 votes ahead of his nearest challenger in the race for this season’s player of the year award, with the dashing allrounder mesmerising his opponents with both bat and ball. But what the Bulls run into this week is the tightest-of-tight units in Kooweerup, a team with five brothers in its side and looking to build on its three premiership victories in the last five years. The Demons have been in fine form this season, coming into this contest on the back of a seven-game winning streak. The Bulls haven’t tasted success since 2008/’09 and will be keen to take a massive psychological advantage into this finals series, having already defeated the Demons in round three. Barfuss, Simon Parrott, Dean Henwood and Ben Darose for the Bulls, taking on Michael Giles, Chris O’Hara, Matt Davey and the bright family ... it should be a ripper. ROUND 11 REVIEW KOOWEERUP (6/136) paceman John Bright (4/14) set the Demons on the path to victory with a thrilling hat-trick early in the contest against Merinda Park (134). Bright bowled Daniel McCalman (9) to claim his first scalp of the day, then had Dylan Cuthbertson (0) trapped in front before completing his unique achievement by rattling the stumps of Glen Ward (0). From there, it was all about maintaining the rage for the reigning champs, with miserly spells from veterans Chris O’Hara (1/19 off 8) and Matt Davey (1/23 off 8) and a well-deserved four-wicket haul to Ron Bright Jr (4/30 off 7) combining to quell the Cobras’ flame. Koowee skipper Michael Giles (33) then supplied the polish before a Matt-finish was provided by

Merinda Park’s Glen Ward becomes the third-leg of John Bright’s hat-trick, bowled by the Kooweerup Picture: ROB CAREW opener for a duck. 133457 the club’s two in-form performers in Matt Bright (26) and Davey (33 not out). Dylan Cuthbertson (2/35), Brendan Fairlam (2/21) and skipper Danny Diwell (2/15) took two each for the Cobras who now have a poor one-and-four record against their fellow premiership contenders. A classy century from Beaconsfield’s (9/184) Shameera Weerasinghe (109) has not been enough to stop Tooradin (7/228) from bouncing back to the winner’s list at Westernport Oval. Weerasinghe’s composed innings highlighted two things, one, that Beaconsfield has stumbled on a player of real class, and two, that cricket is a team game and individual talent can only take you so far without any real level of support. Tooradin proved that point as its innings escalated, with first Tom Hussey (70), then Aaron Avery (87), showing there’s more than one string

to the Seagulls’ bow. Ross Douglas (4/47) claimed bowling honours for the winners who broke a two-game losing streak. Cardinia (160) did as expected and proved there’s a large gap between the top-four and the rest with a comfortable victory over Pakenham (9/110) at Gunton Oval. Skipper Neil Barfuss (57) knocked in his fifth half-century on the trot to help his Bulls to a competitive score while Pakenham’s Russell Lehman (5/32) did his best to limit the damage. Supporting roles for the Bulls were played by Mark Andolfatto (30) and Daniel Glen (23) while Lehman’s cast included Chris Smith (3/13) and Zac Chaplin (2/42). At half-time this one was in the balance. But Lehman (0) went first ball, struck down by Dean Henwood

(1/25), and the Lions quickly resembled a ship without a rudder. Embarrassingly, Chris Smith (28) was the only batsman in the top-nine to score double figures as Travis Welsh (4/16) picked off his opponents at will. Upper Beaconsfield (7/161) is heading in the right direction and continued its strong finish to the season with a three-wicket win over Emerald (9/159) at Chandler Reserve. The comfortable win came despite the Bombers two best performers this season, AJ Walker (62) and Darcy Hellriegel (3/40), having more than serviceable games. The difference in the end was the Maroons’ consistency, with Scott Pitcher (3/25) and Chris Savage (3/32) with the ball, and Savage (36), Robert North (32) and Julian Bayard (23) with the bat chipping in with valuable contributions at crucial times.

Mourning the passing of perennial club supporter Bill Crawford - father of Berwick all-rounder Ryan - the mood at Arch Brown Reserve was sombre, but with Crawford a firm believer in the game carrying on no matter what, Berwick took to the field to respect the wishes of the departed DDCA legend. In the battle of the Bears, Parkfield emerged triumphant as young spinner Travis D’Souza (7/30) rattled through Berwick at a rapid rate. D’Souza’s 15.3 overs beguiled Berwick as he ran through the home side en route to his best DDCA figures. Berwick (2/125) fared much better in the second innings, going the tonk to erase the outright deficit and thump out the remaining 21 overs. Third place Berwick will now head to Heinz Southern Districts with a spot in the top-four on the line while Parkfield moves up to eighth and remain only an outside chance of playing finals, and needing to impress this week against top-of-the-ladder Cranbourne at home. Solid win and fate gives in HAMPTON PARK BOWLS THE Midweek Pennant resumed in earnest after the break and last week’s rain. Both Division One and Division Two played Dandenong Club. With a good 24 shot win at home and favourable results from other clubs' games, Hampton Park’s Division One team is now second on the ladder. Geoff Ladner, Chris Hendrie, Andrew Brandolin and Ellen Smith scored a 6 on the first end to show the way and finished with an 18 shot win, 30-12, while Geoff Ampt, Ann Westwell, Helen Lambert and Denise Eastick won 25-13. In a tough game, Jim Westwell, Shane Collins, Peter Hayden and Neville Hendrie lost 12-18. Hampton Park (1) 14-67 defeated Dande Club (1) 2-43. Playing at Dandenong Club, Division Two had a much deserved win by 17 shots. Heather Naismith, June Damon, Marion Battaglia and Ray Wood led all day for their 36-8 win, allowing their opponents only five ends and they were helped by Brian Diaper, Jen Sherry, Gwen Clough and Bob Nicol,

who won 25-14. Dot Carr, Rhonda Diaper, Keith Damon and Rob Woff went down 13-35. Hampton Park (2) 14-74 defeated Dande Club (2) 2-57. Saturday’s Division Two Pennant team its their toughest win for the season at Mordialloc, but the overall result was warranted as Hampton Park now sits on top of the ladder. With two ends to play and the scores locked at 82 each, Steve Barnes, Chris Hendrie, Andrew Brandolin and Warwick Hardy dug deep to score six shots to nil and win their rink, 26-24, and the overall game. The biggest winner for the Parkers was Neville Hendrie, Larry Simpson, Sean McDonald and Ken Cobden, 3014 while Geoff Ampt, John Nunan, Shannon Micallef and Shane Collins won 20-17. Shane Hardy, Mark Paton, Ian Bartlett and Zak Storm had a disappointing day losing 12-27. Hampton Park (1) 16-88 defeated Mordialloc (1) 2-82. Division Four was at home to Murrumbeena and had another strong win.

Lou Soligo, Jos Van Hout, Bill Webb and Craig Richards were closest, losing 20-23, while Keith Damon, John Wright, Brian Diaper and Ray Wood lost 14-21. Gerry Cox, Rudi Oost, Bob Nicol

and Ian Kitt lost 15-25 and Janice Collins, Jen Sherry, Marion Battaglia and Bill Holden had a very bad day losing 7-31. Hampton Park (3) 0-56 lost to Vermont South (5) 18-100. Illness caused a lack of players for Division Eight and was forced to give a walkover.

Diamonds sparkle at end of season UNEARTHING their best and brightest from the inaugural campaign, the Berwick Diamonds Women’s Gridiron Team celebrated the end of the season with their presentation night on Friday. While the season came to an abrupt end in the Diamonds’ 6-34 Gridiron Victoria semi-final loss to Northern Raiders, an enormous amount of inaugural season positives have given the Diamonds great momentum heading into their first off-season. After a year with her head over the ball, taking crunching tackles as the team’s starting runningback, Bliss Love was named the Diamonds’ inaugural Most Valuable Player. Love, 27, endured hit-after-hit but kept charging ahead to give the Diamonds crucial first downs and important gains in all facets of the game. On offence, quarterback Vanessa Roman was named Offen-

sive MVP, a stellar achievement for a first-season quarterback who relished the chance to star undercentre. Outside line-backer, and general nightmare to opposition backs, Erin Gubatunga earned the Defensive MVP as well as Best Finals Player to cap off the major awards, presented by head coach Jamie Stafford and the rest of the Diamonds’ coaching and training staff. Also receiving awards at the presentation night at the Sandhurst Club on Friday 16 January were Barbara Dunlop (Most Improved), Chantelle Baniani (Best Lineman) and the Dale Warren Trophy - named after Berwick Miners’ champion and long-time administrator - was won by co-captain Cat Bouwhuis. The Berwick Miners men’s program is about to kick off, with preparations for the new season to begin with the club’s Registration Day at Sunday 8 February, 10am at Rawling Field, Endeavour Hills.

Six of the best in a ripping display of bowls CRANBOURNE BOWLS PLAYING at home, Cranbourne put on a great display of bowls to defeat Glen Waverley in Division 1 metro bowls on Saturday. Skip Ray Travica was in praise of his team and in particular Maree Taylor. “Maree played incredible bowls today, defeating her opponent on 19 out of 21 ends which is an incredible feat at this level in Division 1 metro bowls.” Also a great win by the Division 2 side that defeated Clayton away to win by four shots, and the Division 7 side that crushed Oakleigh at home by an amazing 57 shots. DIVISION 1 A seven-shot victory over Glen Waverley lifts Cranbourne from the bottom of the ladder to eighth spot.
