■ Principal goes nuclear in conflict over school upgrade…
Classroom war By CASEY NEILL

A KEYSBOROUGH school has closed its doors without warning in the latest move in a game of high stakes poker with the State Government. The Chandler Park and Maralinga primary schools amalgamated in 2010 but have continued to operate as two campuses. Principal Peter Paul has been waiting for funding to add 10 classrooms, a library, an art room and administration space at Chandler Park so he could bring all students and staff together. He last month decided to ambush the Education Department by closing Maralinga before the school year started and moving all students and staff to the inadequate Chandler Park site. “We’ll hand all the keys back to the Education Department,” he said. Mr Paul said the move would allow the Education Department to sell the vacant Maralinga site and use the funds for Chandler Park’s $6 million re-development. “The land is worth twice as much as we need,“ he said. “We want to finish the school. “What happens to the other site is up to the department and the government.” Mr Paul spoke out in the Journal last May when the cash needed didn’t appear in the 2014-’15 State Budget. “We’re running across both campuses. We try to operate as one school. We are one school,” he said. “That places a strain on planning. That places a strain on time. “This is not the proverbial elastic band. We’re not just going to be stretched and stretched and hoping something happens.” Last Wednesday Keysborough MP Martin Pakula told teachers that he’d follow through on his $500,000 pre-
Cool to be back in class ALMOST 25,000 students across Greater Dandenong started the new school year last week. About 1200 Preps, 900 Year 7s and 1000 Year 12s began class at the municipality’s government schools. Chandler Park Primary School welcomed 65 Preps who’ll ease into their schooling with four-day weeks during February.
Fili tests out the play equipment. 133771 Picture: GARY SISSONS election promise for architectural planning work. “For the first time, the glass is half full, and that’s the way we should be approaching the whole process,” Mr Paul said. “Seeing it become a reality will be a wonderful thing for the kids and for the community and for the staff here.” Mr Pakula said he was “very confi-
dent that the half a million dollars will be in the first budget”. “We’ve got a budget coming up in May and without flagging the detail of the budget - which is very closely guarded by the treasurer as people would understand,” he said. “I don’t think that this school can wait. “I don’t think it would be acceptable
to any of us if it was in the budget in 2017, 2018 or something of that nature.” Mr Pakula said Maralinga’s closure should speed up the process. “That was making it more difficult for that campus to be disposed of and the money to be freed up to complete the works at this school,” he said. “There should now be no impediment to the department proceeding
to resolve the issue of Maralinga and fund the work. “My commitment is to keep working with Peter and the school community to advocate tirelessly for those funds to be released so that this work can be concluded.” Chandler Park Primary School will welcome new families to the campus with a barbecue and entertainment after school tomorrow (Tuesday) afternoon.

SPRINGVALE residents could lose already-scarce open space if the council proceeds with plans to sell more land to Minaret College. Last Tuesday, by seven to four, councillors voted to ask for public comment on selling 75A Whitworth Avenue, Springvale, to the school for $1.150 million. The council leases a dilapidated kindergarten on the land, abutting Glendale Reserve, to Minaret and the Scout Association uses a second building for storage. But Minaret can end its lease this year and has indicated it intends to do so, leaving the kinder vacant. So last May council officers asked the college if it wanted to purchase the site and use it to provide an expanded kindergarten service - up from 52 children to more than 100. But community services director Mark Doubleday said current kinder services were meeting demand and would continue to. There are more than 40 free places, he said, and this will increase by
67 when the Sandown Kindergarten relocates to Springvale Rise Primary School’s heights campus this year a 14-minute walk from Minaret, across Springvale Road. But Cr Jim Memeti said there was a need for more places. “I believe there are kids in this area that will miss out,” he said. “People won’t cross Springvale Road to take the children to kinder.” Acting planning, design and amenity director Peter Shelton said council policy required 4.5 hectares of open space per 1000 residents, and this area offered just 1.4 hectares. Cr Matthew Kirwan said Glendale Reserve was the only park in this part of Springvale, and it was very busy when he visited about 8pm on Sunday 14 December. “I reflected that night that if the dilapidated Scout hall and kindergarten were not there how this would be a bigger and better park for this community, particularly as the density of housing increases in this area over time,” he said.
Cr Kirwan questioned whether Minaret College needed the land. “They already own land where they can build their own kindergarten and they told me last week they would use it if they have to,” he said. He also said that only eight nonMinaret students used the current kindergarten, which Cr Youhorn Chea said was in poor condition. “If it didn’t sell, we would need to spend money to build a new kinder,” he said. But Cr Angela Long, who grew up in Wentworth Avenue, said the kinder should not be rebuilt but instead demolished to make more open space. “That’s what the residents in that street want,” she said. “There’s not a lot of that park left. “I believe they have a right to this open space.” Cr Angela Long said many students who attended the college didn’t live in the area, so were brought in on 27 buses each day.

“It would get worse with more kids,” she said. Jean Harris has lived in the street since 1951 and said the school had “already taken half the park and fenced it off”. “We used to have lots of people coming to play sport on the land,” she said. Ms Harris said the park was part of a 300-house war service area. “The war service made that park for us,” she said. She helped to raise funds for the kinder and opened it as committee president in 1966. “It’s quite an old building, but it’s not the point of the building,” she said. “That’s part of the park. “The school’s got two houses next to the park and they’ve already knocked one down, which was to be a kindergarten and an assembly hall. Nothing’s come of that.” - Casey Neill

CHINA’S version of Next Top Model has found an unlikely base in Bangholme. More than 60 million people tuned in to I, Supermodel during its first season last year. The program searches the country for up-and-coming models with the potential to become world-class professionals. The five remaining contestants and more than 80 crew members have been living on a sprawling property in Bangholme since 15 December. Assistant Sherry said producers selected the location because it was “beautiful and very quiet”. “It’s a super house for supermodels,” she said. The youngest contestant, Ai Jia Gu, 18, is from Greater Dandenong’s Chinese sister city, Xuzhou. The girls are divided into two teams and compete in surprise challenges each week, which have included trips to Queensland and New South Wales as well as Melbourne locations. None of the contestants had been to Australia before. “It’s very different. Fresh air was the first thing,” Ki Ki Kang, 25, said. “There’s not so many people, like there are in China. “We don’t have that much time to go around and see what real Melbourne looks like.”

WHAT’S IN A NAME DELVES INTO THE FASCINATING STORIES AND PERSONALITIES BEHIND SOME OF THE CITY’S BEST KNOWN STREET NAMES. THIS WEEK THE JOURNAL LOOKS AT POUND ROAD.
Pioneer families were bound by the pound POUND Road is not named after an individual but rather the animal pound that once existed at the Dandenong South end of the road. Three pioneer families settled the bulk of the land that is now Hampton Park, Hallam and Dandenong South, the three suburbs linked by Pound Road. The first European settler in the area was Isaac Edey who arrived in 1842. He owned 572 acres east of Dandenong where Hallam Road is today. The Edey family homestead was situated where Ormond Road is now. In 1852 Peter Davis successfully bid at auction in Melbourne for 316 acres of land on the Princes Highway where the old GMH and Heinz factories would later be built. In 1854 Mr Davis expanded his holdings by purchasing the full triangle of land bounded by Cranbourne, Pound
WHAT’S IN A NAME? and Hallam roads, giving him a total of 885 acres. He paid the princely sum of £1 per acre. In 1863 David Duncan purchased 156 acres on Pound Road, opposite a wellknown parcel of land known by everyone as Garner’s Paddock. In 1857 James Garner had opened a shoe forge on his Hampton Park land but later shifted his business to Dandenong. All three properties were fenced with redgum posts and nine-foot rails and adjoined Garner’s Paddock. Garner’s Paddock was used as the
Dandenong Pound for many years, hence the name Pound Road. The pound’s yards were situated on the hill on the South Gippsland Highway between the Dandenong Bypass and Greens Road. Cattle were often impounded during the day only to mysteriously disappear at night. At the end of the 19th century the three original families subdivided their land into smaller farms of up to 40 hectares. Until Hampton Park was declared an official sub-division in 1917-’18, ratepayers of the area were listed variously as living in Eumemmerring, Dandenong or Lyndhurst. LOOKING BACK 4 February 1915 Memories of Home UNDER the darkness of alien skies A youthful soldier wounded, lay The glimmer of death was in his eyes, While his life blood slowly ebbed away A twinkling light on the distant plain A well remembered moonlit hill The evening air fresh sweet with rain; Sad thoughts of home that haunt him still. His face grew dark with the shade of death, As the shadows of evening creep He drew a last faint fluttering breath, And closed his eyes in an endless sleep. 50 years ago 3 February 1965 Beware this heartless trickster ELDERLY women living alone are warned by
Dandenong CIB not to admit to their homes a well-dressed, 50-year-old man who is a glib talker and a quick-thinker. Detectives say that the caller is an experienced confidence man who is employing a new technique. He ascertains the names and the religion of elderly women who live alone and the names of some of their friends. He pays a social call and talks sympathetically about religious matters. His stay is short, but he is usually back on the doorstep in a few minutes distressed at having left a wallet containing money behind which can’t be found, then follows request for a small loan for half an hour until he recovers his car which is at the garage. Elderly women have loaned him various amounts of money and never seen him again.
20 years ago 6 February 1995 Cheers! We're 130 Years old. EVERY year is memorable for the Journal, but 1995 promises more than its share of special appeal because the south east region’s oldest newspaper will celebrate its 130th anniversary. The first issue of the then South Bourke and Mornington Journal was published in 1865 with the intention of reporting all the news from one of the fastest-growing areas of a fledgling Victoria. Now, 130 years later, little has changed The Journal still brings you all the news and

the south east growth corridor still leads the state. 5 years ago 1 February 2010 School Attacked A PASSER-By stopped a deliberately lit fire from causing major damage to Doveton North Primary School last Friday week. A police spokesman said offenders entered the school grounds about 9.20pm. They threw eggs at a portable classroom, smashed windows and threw a lit toilet roll into a classroom. A passer-by who saw the fire called triple zero and used a water container from his car to put out the flames. Thanks to his swift action the damage was limited to $500. - Compiled by the Dandenong and District Historical Society
Police say this plausible confidence man has been working this heartless trick for nearly seven years. They say he has not yet made a mistake that would lead to his arrest.

Chip is a block By CASEY NEILL ADAM Haines is urging pet owners to update microchip contact details after battling to have his frail, 19-year-old dog returned to his care. City of Casey rangers picked up Buddha, a lhasa aspo, from the Animal Emergency Centre in Hallam and took him to the Cranbourne pound. He went missing from behind closed gates in Mr Haines’ Keysborough front yard about 7pm on Sunday 25 January. “We spent hours searching for him,” he said. “He can’t walk the few metres back from the park. He’s partly deaf, he’s partly blind. “He’s been to the vet a couple of times in the past three months, because we’re monitoring now - we’re monitoring for that time that he can’t go on any longer. “I knew someone had picked him up.” Mr Haines encountered trouble retrieving his beloved pooch when Buddha’s microchip details were linked to his former partner. “My ex and I split up 17 years ago and he was microchipped 18 years ago,” he said. “When you’re young and you’re living life you take for granted your little mates. “Losing him and not being able to find him was one thing, but to know he’s been locked away because of my irresponsibility... “I think this is something that really needs to get out there. People need to be aware of what could happen.” They were finally reunited last Wednesday. “His brother passed away a couple of years ago at 16,” Mr Haines said. “In the year 2000 I arrived in Mel-
Adam Haines with his dog Buddha. 133747 bourne with the clothes I was wearing and my two dogs. “They were my boys and they were with me. “They were the only reason I kept going through the bad times. “He means more to me than most people do.” Greater Dandenong regulatory services manager Peter Shelton said pet registration was compulsory for all Victorian dog and cat owners and had been for many years. “Registering your pet is important

for many reasons,” he said. “It not only increases your chances of being reunited with your pet if it goes missing, but it also supports animal management and education programs in the City of Greater Dandenong.” Mr Shelton said the council’s primary aim was always to return the pet immediately to its owner. “This can be better achieved by ensuring your pet is registered, wearing its tag and is microchipped,” he said. All pet registrations are due for renewal on 9 April and anyone who fails to register their pet could be fined $295.
Arson fear after beds are left burning GREATER Dandenong police are appealing for information about three deliberately lit fires. The first was at a home in Corrigan Road, Noble Park, about 7am on Saturday 24 January. An arsonist set fire to hard rubbish, including mattresses and sun lounges, which was stacked up for collection at the top of a driveway. Greater Dandenong CIU Sergeant Glen Cruse said the resident extinguished the fire before it could damage any other property. He said a man described as Caucasian, aged in his late thirties or early forties and wearing a black singlet, was seen acting suspiciously in the area. Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Senior Constable Ryan Johnson investigated two deliberately lit fires in Falkiner Reserve, Dandenong, before 6.20am on Tuesday 27 January. The first was lit opposite 20 Falkiner Street and the second about 200 metres away near Ross Street and Turner Court. Sen Const Johnson said the CFA extinguished the fires. –Casey Neill

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Animal antics
Royal apology
After reading Diane’s letter (Dog Of An Act, Journal, 19 January) I was very upset that Greater Dandenong council has impounded the dog, Laura. Is this going to be another Baa the sheep case? Also, how can this be costing $8000? How can anyone be expected to pay this enormous sum? Council should be helping this lady, not adding to her troubles! Show some compassion please! Shirley Sellars, Keysborough.
LOOKS like Tony Abbott is still trying to make up for his Linda Lovelace comment to Prince Charles in his Oxford days! Wayne Nattrass, Noble Park.
Bad attitude I was so impressed with the wonderful letter written by Diana Prosser (Dog Of An Act, Journal, 19 January) in support of the homeless lady and Dandenong council’s plans to kill her dog,
Two summers later, Andrew was still with me and quite tame. Two rangers visited me and told me they didn’t believe I hadn’t purchased the bird myself and threatened to have me taken to court and stated they were coming back at night to catch him and take him away. I insisted they leave it to me to catch him and I’d have him sent somewhere suitable. They agreed reluctantly. Andrew was taken to my kind neighbour’s daughter’s house in Bunyip to live but the whole matter and
also mentioning the Baa saga, which a lot of us followed. I was not impressed at the council’s attitude to both stories as I’ve been left with a nasty taste in my mouth after someone reported a noisy “peacock" on my property some years ago. This peacock ‘Andrew’ flew into my backyard and decided to stay as he liked my big fernery and I was concerned he must have escaped from his owners. I phoned the council rangers and was told that it was probably feral and there was nothing they could do about it.
the attitude of the council rangers stays with me today. I’ve a very bad impression of the council’s rangers and their disrespect towards me at the time. While they were here, the female ranger did mention after all the threats and accusations that she did recall taking a call about a peacock some time ago. It was likely my call, but they remained unapologetic, even though they could see I was upset by their attitude. Patricia Ferguson, Dandenong North.

Cr Sampey on the board about a year ago, claimed that Mr Jaensch was the director of the biggest business in the municipality. “He is so respected on that board for his financial experience,” he said. Cr Kelly told the Journal he had been attending all of the monthly market meetings and said Cr Sampey’s comments were frustrating. “It’s a bit of a shame we don’t see Maria at any of the briefing meetings,” he said. “She doesn’t put much into council - she certainly hasn’t for the past year. “It’s close to 60 meetings she hasn’t attended herself in the past 12 months.” Cr Kelly said he would move on and “not be distracted by Maria’s nonsense”. “I’ve got a job to do, representing the ratepayers,” he said. “I’ll be the same councillor I have been for the past 25 years.”

Cr Maria Sampey, a former non-voting member on the Dandenong Market board, questioned why Mr Jaensch was attending and “not a market board member with more experience”. “I fail to see how Mr Jaensch is qualified to go,” she said. Council CEO John Bennie said Mr Jaensch played a key role in advising the market board and driving its strategic direction. He said the trip would also increase council expertise, so it wasn’t just reliant on the board and its experience. Cr John Kelly, who replaced

A councillor has slammed plans to send a city director to Spain, labelling him unqualified for the Dandenong Market factfinding mission. At a fiery City of Greater Dandenong council meeting last Tuesday, Cr Maria Sampey also accused Cr John Kelly of lying about attending market meetings. She was the only one of 11 councillors to vote against sending corporate services director Mick Jaensch to the ninth International Public Markets conference in Barcelona next month. The $5000, seven-night trip would also include a visit to three major London markets. Dandenong Market chairwoman Julie Busch will make the journey too and insights will be used to prepare a revised strategic plan for the market. Conference topics will include why markets matter, in-

church village. I saw how they cook food under the ground. “It made me very appreciative. I think that’s really what the journey has done. “It’s made me realise that I’m in a position to help others so I should.” Petrea planned to start an arts/law degree at university this year. “I really want to work in the area of social justice. I think it’s really important,” she said. “I don’t just want to get heaps of money. “I’d love to work somewhere like VCAT or at city councils informing new people who’ve just arrived in the country.”

PETREA Turner wants to spend her life helping people in need and is already making it happen. The Dandenong North 18-year-old completed her Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award late last year. She celebrated her achievement with 79 other recipients at the inaugural Gold Award Gala at Melbourne Town Hall on 6 December, which commemorated the youth development program’s 50th year in Victoria. Petrea participated in dancing for her physical activity, singing for the award’s skills component and completed community service through school activities. She assisted Make-A-Wish Australia for her residential project, helping volunteers to set up a trivia night, present at schools, complete office tasks and collect donations. “I really got a sense of what the charity was about,” she said. “Members of my family are heavily involved with the organisation, so I thought it would be a great opportunity for me to give back to a charity which means so much to the people I’m close to.” She went to Suva, Fiji, for her adventurous journey task. “My uncle at the time was the acting high commissioner,” she said. “I stayed in the Australian compound. That was almost like a community service team at the same time.” Petrea attended the Austra-

SPREADING the message about a disease which greatly affected his life was Bill Crawford’s last wish. Lifelong Dandenong-area cricketer Crawford, 60, who lived in Cranbourne, passed away recently after battling liver cancer triggered by an underlying disease he didn’t know he had until later in life. The robust right-arm paceman, who played for a long list of Dandenong area cricket clubs including Parkfield, Lyndale, Parkmore and Dandenong West, found out about his disease after he had two strokes 10 years ago. The doctors’ diagnosis was hereditary haemochromatosis or iron overload - which as the nickname suggests is a condition where the body accumulates too much iron. For Bill the excessive iron caused the most havoc in his liver where it eventually created cancerous tumours, which he wanted the community to know would not have happened if it had been found earlier in his life. “We want people to know about this haemochromatosis as the disease is out there - people should be checked for it for a start,” Crawford said when interviewed last week. “Find out what has to be done about it and don’t wait until you’re 50. “It’s hereditary and they’ve got to tell their family - let your family know to be checked.” As his cancer took a greater hold in September, Crawford
was thrilled to prolong his innings and make it to one last Christmas with his family and said he’d miss those family moments most of all. “Out of everything - I’ll miss Dianne most,” he said. “You’ll miss everything, though, you think of things that you’re going to miss and everything relates to everything.” Bill’s wife Dianne implored anyone with a European background - the primary ethnic group affected by it - to get checked as it can be looked for in a routine blood test and if found early enough haemochromatosis is treatable and manageable. “We want people to be aware - check out the warnings,” Di Crawford said. “Ask them for a haemochromatosis test - what’s the problem, it’s just a blood test.” Always cheerful, even to the very end, Crawford was a perennial fixture on the boundary at Arch Brown Reserve in Berwick watching his son Ryan charge in. Sitting with his transistor radio, form guide and a cooler with a few cigarettes, soaking up the sun and just enjoying everything about being at the game - it’s that memory of Bill that many will fondly remember now his innings has ended. Bill is survived by his wife Dianne, mother Fay, brother Shane, children Ryan, Bryce and Shannon, grandchildren Ethan, Beau, Christian and family members Kristy and Mel. Bill Crawford’s funeral was held on Wednesday at the Springvale Botanical Cemetery.

POLICE will now have the power to move on spectators at hoon gatherings in Greater Dandenong. Councillors last Tuesday approved amendments to local laws that included expanding regulated activities provisions to encompass public gatherings, processions, rallies and demonstrations. The provisions now also cover people organising or participating in an event, for instance, where someone has used social media to arrange a gathering but has not attended. The changes followed submissions from police trying to curb hoon behaviour and will enable officers to require any person at an unauthorised gathering to leave.
The council report said the municipality was invariably in the top 10 locations for hooning offences detected and occasionally slipped into the top five. “Police currently have a range of powers available to deal with the drivers of vehicles engaging in these activities,” it said. “However, they do not have any general powers available to them for moving spectators away from a gathering. “Being able to disperse spectators quickly is seen as an important aspect of reducing the risk of injury to these people.” The Journal first reported Greater Dandenong Highway Patrol’s Senior Sergeant Scott

Roberts’ push for these changes in June last year. “Nothing attracts a crowd like a crowd. They’re only down there for one reason,” he said. “It’s going to end badly one of these nights.” Sen Sgt Roberts said gatherings of “a couple of hundred cars” in Dandenong South were common and burnouts and street racing ensued. He said the behaviour was drawing “precious resources” away from where they were needed most. Police will use the bylaws in addition to operations with marked and unmarked police cars, hidden cameras and vehicle impound measures.

Greater Dandenong Mayor Sean O’Reilly wasn’t kidding when he offered to have a cuppa Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS with a goat to promote Lunar New Year. 133221
Go for goats THE Year of the Goat will be officially welcomed in at a spectacular Lunar New Year celebration in Springvale on Sunday 15 February. A crowd of up to 80,000 is expected to enjoy Asian culture and traditions including food and entertainment from China, Vietnam, Japan, Korea and Mongolia. Greater Dandenong Mayor Sean O’Reilly is among those who are looking forward to the spectacular celebration which draws thousands of visitors to the city.
“The festival is a great opportunity for local families to participate in an event which promotes harmony, tolerance and understanding,” Cr O’Reilly said. “It showcases Springvale to a much wider audience as statistics show that a large number of people who attend the event live outside Greater Dandenong.” The council has worked in partnership with the Springvale Asian Business Association to organise the event, which is now in its 23rd year.
Cr O’Reilly said the partnership ensured the cultural significance and quality of the event was maintained and strengthened. Visitors will enjoy a wide range of street food and beverage stalls from more than 50 multicultural vendors as well as arts, crafts and novelty stalls, family entertainment and largescale amusement rides and carnival attractions. The festival, centred around Balmoral and Buckingham avenues, runs from 10am until 10pm.

IT’S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS BUT… THE thorny issue of face coverings revealed itself again last week at a City of Greater Dandenong council meeting. Scott Peters of Dandenong said in a public question time submission that he recently entered Dandenong Library wearing his motorcycle helmet. He was asked to remove the helmet, and to leave the building when he refused. Mr Peters asked the council if a woman wearing a burqa would have received the same treatment and said his headwear was part of “my Australian culture”. Council CEO John Bennie said the helmet rule was part of standard public building management and rejected Mr Peter’s assertion that a burqa was only cultural attire, not religious. A SECURITY and safety assessment is keeping Dandenong Civic Centre’s underground car park closed. The Journal reported in December that
only council staff had been using the facility due to increasing concerns about the security of public buildings because of terrorism. Council CEO John Bennie said last Tuesday that councillors would receive and discuss a report in mid-February and the car park’s future would become clearer. COUNCILLOR Peter Brown made a brief but poignant report at the first council meeting for the year last Tuesday. “One of the highlights of Australia Day to me was our Prime Minister’s decision to make one of Australia’s knights a 93-year-old English prince,” he said, voice dripping with sarcasm, before retaking his seat. A NOBLE Park bank was recently caught short-changed following pension day. A retail worker told the Journal she
went to the bank during her lunch break one Friday to replenish her $5 and $10 note supplies. But an apologetic teller said she had only $20 notes or coins because “the seniors took them all on Thursday. Our order hasn’t come in yet”. The worker walked out with $30 in $2 and $1 coins. “Our customers got a lot of coins!” she said. WITH a smile and a spatula, Dandenong Rangers players will volunteer with The Pancake Parlour for The Big Umbrella’s A Real Meal program on Shrove Tuesday. Cappie Pondexter, Penny Taylor, Annalise Pickrel and Alice Kunek will feed pancakes, soup and bakery goods to Melbourne’s homeless at Flinders Street Station from 7pm to 9pm on International Pancake Day, Thursday 5 February.
A DANDENONG North aged care home has celebrated two special milestones. Ella Brennan, pictured, turned 104 on 23 January and son Bill and daughter-in-law Christine were among the party guests. Fellow Regis Waverley Gardens Aged Care resident Jean Bridger turned 101 on 15 January. “Both remain very active with attending morning exercises, indoor bowls and sing-alongs,” receptionist Leanne said. “They both like old movies and they are always smiling and happy.”

I use a straightforward and honest approach to lead them in the right direction. HOW IMPORTANT IS A GREAT TEAM TO OPERATIONAL SUCCESS? A great team is what makes a successful company. Look for people who are well educated and who have excellent general knowledge. 2. Find the right people for the job.

NEW HOMES & LAND
THE BRACKEN IS A BONUS AT only $189,000 for 26 squares, The Bracken ticks all the must-have boxes when it comes to a smart family home. Red Bluff Homes has designed The Bracken with discerning family buyers or retirees in mind. The spacious and modern design offers a layout that flows smoothly from the smart entrance through to the fantastic optional outdoor living area at the opposite end of the home. In between is a master suite complete with ensuite and walk-in robe, a theatre room, three additional bedrooms, separate laundry, kitchen and large open plan meals/family area. Flexibility is the cornerstone of The Bracken’s thoughtful design. The team at Red Bluff Homes know that each family is different and that when it comes to utilising space, choice and flexibility are essential. With this in mind, The Bracken can easily be converted to a four-bedroom home by utilising the spacious retreat adjacent to the master suite. Alternatively, the retreat can be used as a study, perfect for anyone running a home business, or incorporated into the master suite creating a luxurious private oasis for busy parents. The kitchen is stylish and functional with walk-in pantry, and stainless steel appliances. The kitchen looks out over the open-plan meals/family area to the optional outdoor living area at the rear. The impressive entertaining area would be perfect for barbecues and
parties and also provides an outdoor play space for children. Sliding doors off the family/meals area create a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor living. Carpet and tiles and service connections
are standard with The Bracken, as is the use of low-maintenance Colorbond on the roof, guttering and downpipes. Add your choice of any of the following at no extra cost: * Roofed outdoor area;
* Nine-foot ceilings; * Stone benchtops in the kitchen; or * Evaporative cooling. For further details and a copy of the inclusions list and floor plan contact Red Bluff homes on 9709 0400.

ROOM TO MOVE HOMES STILL BELOW PREVIOUS PRICE PEAK While attention has focused on Victoria’s auction boom and the increase in prices across the state, particularly since spring 2013, a number of regional Victorian towns are yet to reach their peak property prices of 2010. Top of the list is Horsham with a median price of $167,500 over the year ending 30 September 2014, almost $20,000 below its median for the year to 30 September 2010. Given that median prices are slightly below what they were during the previous market peak, it offers the prospect that prices have room for growth.
This is positive news for sellers, with expected price growth, and also for buyers looking to buy immediately and seeking affordable properties. And Morwell, with a median house price of $160,000 over the 12 months, is about 10 per cent below its 2010 peak so it provides the potential for positive growth for Gippsland buyers who are looking for competitively priced properties. The well located town, which is nestled between coast and country and on a key rail link to Melbourne, provides the potential of an excellent long-term investment.
With Melbourne’s rising house prices, it offers the opportunity of a foothold on the property ladder to those first home buyers and families who are on a budget and are looking to regional Victoria properties which have not yet reached their 2010 peak. And although there are no guarantees, these properties also offer the prospect of capital growth. Other centres which are also below their 2010 peak include Maffra, 8 per cent less at $225,000, Warrnambool, 7 per cent less at $300,000, Daylesford, 4 per cent less at $354,500 and Wodonga, also 4
per cent less at $265,000. In metropolitan Melbourne, Macrae on the Mornington Peninsula, with a median price of $500,000, topped the list of suburbs below their 2010 peak. It was 20 per cent below its 12-month median of $625,000 median at 31 December 2010. While the REIV expects house prices to continue to remain solid in 2015, the market is likely to be more evenly balanced, although it may be given a boost if the Reserve Bank further lowers interest rates. In the next six months we expect the market to remain positive.

Raid fear ends protest By CASEY NEILL RUMOURS that the riot squad was on its way sent workers packing from an 80hour lunchroom protest at a Dandenong factory on Friday. Representatives from International Flavours and Fragrances and the staff were due to attend a hearing at Fair Work to consider the dispute on Saturday. Staff at the Frankston-Dandenong Road premises arrived at work about 6am last Tuesday to find they were banned from going inside. The American-owned multinational company supplies flavourings to Australia’s biggest food producers in liquid, powder and spray. National Union of Workers (NUW) spokeswoman Emma Kerin said the workers had been due to start protected industrial action that day. She said enterprise bargaining agreement (EBA) negotiations started last June and had stalled because IFF insisted on cutting conditions. “Protected industrial action was going to be a ban on paperwork,” Ms Kerin said. “That led to quite an extreme response which was a lockout. “They then voted to stay in the lunchroom because what they’d really like to do is go to work.” Worker Arthur Ingles said rumours were circulating about 4pm on Friday that the riot squad would remove them so they opted to leave. “This was never going to be a violent protest,” he said. “We weren’t going to be mannequins in a training drill. “We knew from the beginning this was a trespass. It’s not the end of the protest. “The picket is going to be maintained. The action is still going to be maintained from outside, not inside.” And Ms Kerin said workers had achieved a victory with a petition on www.coworker.org calling for IFF Asia Pacific regional operations manager Arjan Koudijs to meet with employees and end the lockout. “The workers have agreed that they’ll exit the site today of their own accord with their heads held high,” she said. “The petition has worked and management from Asia Pacific has come. “They are at the site now. They’ll be in Fair Work tomorrow (Saturday).” The petition said workers wanted to be heard and genuinely negotiate a workplace agreement that benefited both parties. “We were promised there would be a cultural change from management. But things have only gotten worse. Local management couldn’t care less about us,” it said. Ms Kerin said union members and

community supporters set up barbecues in front of the premises during the lock-in and brought in food to make sandwiches. “Family and friends have been bringing down blankets and sleeping bags,” she said. Mr Ingles said these efforts and a visit from outspoken veteran priest and media personality Father Bob Maguire on Friday had boosted morale. “Everyone was really, really happy to see him,” he said. “He was as outraged as anyone else at the way events have unfolded here. It’s the unseen support that really keeps you going. “Sacrifice is the only word you can use. None of us undertake work these days because we’re bored.”
Mr Ingles said they were foregoing much-needed income for the sake of principles. He said workers wanted to hold onto two 10-minute paid breaks each day, a $50 a day bonus for sick leave not taken and payout of personal leave on termination after seven years’ service. “That represents a lot of money to a lot of people,” he said. “That’s been built into their costings from the day it was incorporated into the EBA. “You can hardly expect us to be accountable for how they manage their liabilities.” Mr Ingles said management on Friday 23 January told workers to turn up for work on Tuesday to be addressed.
“But we found a notice on the perimeter fence advising we were locked out because of our decision to take protected industrial action,” he said. “This whole scenario should be a partnership. “The company has needs that we satisfy and the company satisfies needs that we have. “No-one is winning out of this situation. But the alternatives are worse than where we find ourselves at the moment. “The alternatives that the company want to incorporate into the EBA would create much more pain for a much longer period of time.” The Journal contacted IFF but did not receive any response.
Market board's strategic move DANDENONG Market has a new face on its board. City of Greater Dandenong councillors last Tuesday night voted to appoint Tim Cockayne as a non-executive director of the Dandenong Market Pty Ltd (DMPL) for three years. Market chairwoman Julie Busch said Mr Cockayne’s strong experience in retail would be a great asset to the five-director board at an important time of growth. He has worked in the retail sector since 1990 in merchandise, marketing, operations and finance. He is currently the Total Tools CEO and has held the CEO and general manager roles at national retail chains including Prouds and Goldmark Jewellers. A council report said Mr Cockayne had a strong local background having attended education within the municipality and being involved with a local soccer club. “He is a highly energetic leader with a strong track record in growing retail businesses,” it said. “During his period with Total Tools their combined turnover has increased by over 80 per cent. “He is extremely energetic and committed to further improving the growth and development of the Dandenong Market.” Mr Cockayne replaced Jerome Gauder, who retired from the board in October last year due to a move interstate. He joins lawyer Tom Mollenkopf who was appointed as a non-executive director in August last year. - CASEY NEILL

Park’s pride DANDENONG Park welcomed up to 15,000 people to Australia Day celebrations last Monday. “I’ve never, ever seen that many people in Dandenong Park before,” Councillor Jim Memeti said. “The fireworks were fantastic at the end.” Some attendees clutched both Australian and Aboriginal flags as they enjoyed the Australiana-themed festivities on 26 January. Aunty Di Kerr congratulated City of Greater Dandenong for the event at Tuesday night’s council meeting before delivering the evening’s prayer. “It grows bigger and better every year,” she said. Ms Kerr said the festivities fostered reconciliation and allowed people to “come together as many faiths without any fear of harm”. Cr Meng Tak attended an Australia Day citizenship ceremony for 50 new Aussies at the Drum Theatre. “One day they will be able to serve Australia in whatever capacity they choose, because Australia is the city of opportunity,” he said.

Flowers grow for ever By NARELLE COULTER IT WAS with intended irony that Michelle Neal decided to name her Noble Park art installation Ever, knowing full well that it certainly would not last forever. The Monash University PhD candidate worked with City of Greater Dandenong gardeners last year to plant the living creation in a tilted garden bed facing Heatherton Road. As the marigolds and salvias grew and eventually flowered they spelt out the word ‘ever’ in brilliant red and yellow blooms. “I knew that this installation would have a limited time-span,” said Michelle. “The word ‘ever’ suggests a permanence that the flowers and the installation did not offer. “I hoped that as the plants grew, they would lose the form of the letters resulting in the garden bed eventually becoming simply a planting of beautiful red and yellow flowers. “The word ‘ever’ planted as a shortlived and changing artwork suggests that everything is subject to change and that there is beauty in alternative narratives.” Michelle was artist-in-residence at Heritage Hill from March to May 2014. Her studio was in historic Benga House, which is surrounded by an expansive garden. Michelle said the gardens had a significant impact on her work. “They became siren-like in their calling and my work became focused on flowers. “I had been wanting to do a more community-focused work for some time
Michelle Neal with her artwork. 133576 and this residency offered the perfect opportunity. “Initially I thought the work would be planted within the grounds of Heritage Hill but the head gardener, Stephen Nelson, suggested a garden bed beyond the boundaries of the property and that took the work into a wider community.” The installation was planted in midOctober. Michelle’s work explores themes of hierarchies, authority and the bestowment
Picture: GARY SISSONS of value. She works in mediums that best suit her message including domestic materials such as discarded household boxes, clothing and books. Much of her work features text. Michelle visits the site every couple of weeks and takes photographs to document its development. “People are chatty in the Dandenong area and many passers-by would comment on the beauty of the flowers. “For me, this, and working with the
gardening team, were the best aspects of the project.” Michelle said she was impressed with the City of Greater Dandenong’s efforts to foster the arts and an artistic community. “It can be very isolating being an artist. The council’s establishment of groups like The Hive are great initiatives that bring creative people together. “By fostering the arts, the council is creating an energy in the city that is wonderful to be a part of.”

Square is set to stay put KIDS who’ve spent their holidays running, rolling and resting on the Dandenong Civic Square lawn will be pleased to know it’s staying put. On Monday night last week councillors approved plans for City of Greater Dandenong to buy the land at the Thomas Street corner from Places Victoria for $900,000. The council’s business manager Paul Kearsley said discussions had concluded that the municipality would be the most suitable owner of the land. Places Victoria acquired the space for future development to do just that, but previous agreements secured the council the first opportunity to purchase it. Mr Kearsley said the council was under no obligation to develop the 1006 square metre space but if it did, work would have to complement the existing square and building. The council already owns the land where the civic centre and library stand and manages the Crown land where the square sits.

Top Stingrays sample USA By JARROD POTTER ONE of the best 35 young footballers in the country. It’s quite the glowing recommendation three Dandenong Stingrays’ TAC Cup footballers have received after earning their tickets to the United States last month as part of the NAB AFL Academy Level Two Squad. Put through their paces in a high-intensity training program at the elite sports facility - The IMG Academy, in Bradenton, Florida - Gach Nyuon, Kieran Collins and Jacob Weitering were drilled, tested and evaluated under the watchful eyes of Academy coaches and AFL club recruiters alike. With 14 club interviews at the 10-day camp and benefitting from the hard slog of the training program, Nyuon, 17, from Springvale South, feels pretty fortunate to have been given the chance to take his football to the next level before the start of the season. “I reckon I was pretty lucky - the advantage we have over the other players that aren’t in the academy, the facilities we use and the coaches we get, we’re very lucky and I’m just trying to take in and learn as much as I can,” Nyuon said. “They pretty much taught us to push a lot harder - you can take more than you think your body can take if you actually push yourself that little bit extra.
“All the hard work pretty much, with a little support from the boys you can achieve a lot.” The program carries on from the now defunct AIS-AFL Academy and while the players didn’t participate in an exhibition match this time around, the benefits of the camp were enormous for the trio who are set to star in this year’s upcoming TAC Cup. A knee injury kept Nyuon - a 200-cm ruck/ forward prospect - from playing most of last year, but with a full pre-season under his belt, coupled with his Academy training program, Nyuon hopes to excel and make a big impact whether in a Stingrays or Vic Country jumper. “Didn’t play much footy last season, had a few injuries, so I just want to play a full season with the TAC Cup and hopefully play some games at the nationals too,” Nyuon said. “Everything is fine and pre-season is going well and running pretty smooth - we’ve got some practice matches for Stingrays coming up in a couple of weeks.” Affiliated with Narre Warren Football Club in the newly formed South East Football Netball League, Nyuon’s local ambitions this season are to get back to Fox Road if he can find a free weekend in an extremely hectic football schedule. The Dandenong Stingrays commence their 2015 TAC Cup season on Saturday 28 March against the Gippsland Power.

Hope shines in the DDCA By JARROD POTTER EVERY cricket team could use a little Hope. Fortunately for Dandenong West’s under-13 Division 4 side, their Hope comes in the form of a swashbuckling opener Hope Kareta, 12, from Frankston, who blasted an unbeaten 100 against Hampton Park on Saturday. Promoted to the top of the order, Kareta piled on the runs as she blasted the Redbacks to all points on the compass - but a nicely placed single brought up the milestone to the cheers of friends and family alike around the ground. In tandem with captain Jake Goodes (65 not out) and other retiring batsmen Raheel Raheel (25 not out) and Deekon Taylor (37 not out) - Kareta’s century was the showpiece in Dandenong West’s massive 6/371 off only 56 overs. Dandenong West president and Kareta’s under-13s coach Jason Goodes said Kareta has shown amazing talent in only her first season playing for the club after filling in when the Bulls were a player down at the start of the year. “She’s pretty amazing Hope only started playing for us this year,” Goodes said. “Her younger brother played for us and first game this year we were short a player and she asked if she could play and she’s gone on from there.” Returning to the crease this week after retiring on 25 last Saturday, the right-hand batter hit 19 fours all around Greaves Reserve and was able to notch

Take two for the A Team By JARROD POTTER
Ready to whallop another boundary, Dandenong West junior Hope Kareta sensationally struck her first century in an DDCA under-13s match. Picture: JASON GOODES/DANDENONG WEST CC her ton as she guided Dandenong West to an emphatic 314run victory over Hampton Park. “She got a single to bring up her 100 and she’s just as good a bowler as she is a bat - so she’s a special cricketer,” Goodes said.
Kareta is also showing off her bowling skills as she steams in regularly for the Bulls as their opening medium pace bowler. Kareta’s team sits on top of the DDCA Under-13(4) table with seven wins and no losses this season.
THE love of thrashing a remote controlled car inspired a group of enthusiasts to push their cars to the limit at the 24 Hours of Adrenalin event. Driving the hotted-up radio control cars around the 160m indoor circuit in Dandenong, nine teams from across Australia took on the challenge to see who could last the distance and burn the most rubber. From the first lap on Friday night all the way through to 8pm on Saturday night, the teams pushed the tiny vehicles to breaking point. While the teams battled fatigue and battery problems for hours at a time - a couple of cars knocked out of the running altogether - the turnheavy course proved a boon for ‘The A Team’, with the Mr T-less line-up putting down a whopping 4,762 laps to take the chequered flag. Team ‘Bob The Racer’ set a flying lap of 15.215 seconds,
but could not keep up the pace as The A Team emerged. The A Team rattled off 761 kilometres in their 24-hour victory - effectively the distance from Melbourne to Adelaide - to claim back-to-back titles and edge out Team Bob The Racer along with 27 others in the minor positions. Adrenalin Arena founder/ director Damian Andrews said the event - in its second year at the Dandenong-based venue - was created to challenge the Victorian RC community and test the limits of the cars and racers alike. “We just wanted to have a unique event, there’s only one other event like it in the world and that’s in Germany,” Andrews said. “We thought it would be a good challenge to go the distance… we organised it last year and got a reasonable turn out… this year we’ve had nearly double the entries.” Andrews said the big kids can’t get enough of remote
controlled racing and admits his passion returned later in life and encouraged anyone interested to pick up the controls and get down to the venue for some hot laps. “I played with it when I was a kid - in the early teens, then I grew up, and when I became older I discovered my inner youth and started mucking around with toy cars again, much to my wife’s displeasure. “We have kids come down as young as six and certainly have fathers and sons race as well, so it’s great family entertainment for people who want a bit of speed.” More information on Adrenalin Arena and RC racing in Dandenong can be found on their website www. adrenalin-area.com. By JARROD POTTER BLASTING past a whopping target, Dandenong (7/316) claimed its most emphatic win of the season after chasing down Casey-South Melbourne (313). It was a horror start for the visitors as Dan Watson (3/79) and Simon Black (1/44) extracted swing, bounce, and most importantly, the entire Dandenong top order early on Saturday. When David Alleyne (15 retired hurt) had to leave the game with a severely injured calf, the Panthers’ initiative had been completely derailed... except for one man. James Nanopoulos (140) stood tall when his team mates needed to rally around someone. The Pan-
thers’ all-rounder - never before venturing over 72 in the 1st Grade - took it on his shoulders to guide his side home. With another Dandenong allrounder - James Pattinson (64) in tow, the duo added a century-stand to torment Casey captain Chris Hall (0/67) and his Swans. Pattinson would finally give back his wicket - as Lachie Sperling (3/68) spun his first wicket of the afternoon - and gave Casey-South Melbourne its last sniff of victory. Peter Siddle (14) and Peter Sweeney (7) would come and go leaving only Nanopoulos and the tail to get the remaining runs as the wind howled across Casey Fields. Nanopoulos stayed the course and secured his maiden Premier
century as he batted out another strong stand with debutant bowler Adam McMaster (29 not out). Dandenong captain Dan Doran didn’t bat on Saturday as he left it up to his younger quicks to bat out the final overs and secure the victory. McMaster would take the reins once Nanopoulos’ sterling innings ended, skittled by Watson, and with James Wilcock (12 not out) the duo earned the final 24 runs to give the Shepley Oval contingent its best win of the season. Dandenong moves into 14th on the Premier ladder and hosts Ringwood this round. WOMEN - Twenty20 Round 16 DANDENONG Lions (1/54) inflicted a severe mauling onto Melbourne
(52), as the visitors to the den fell for a pittance. Superb bowling from Emma Gallagher (3/16) and Alana King (2/0) left Melbourne in a wreck as only one player mustered a doubledigit tally. The Lions’ batting response was just as brutal as the bowling. King (21 not out) and Erica Kershaw (16 not out) made sure the runs were earned rapidly to give Dandenong a boost from the Twenty20 onslaught. Dandenong sits third in the Twenty20 rankings, equal on points with Essendon Maribyrnong Park, but will need results to fall their way to make the final in a fortnight as Dandenong hosts Essendon Maribyrnong Park in a one-dayer on Saturday.
DANDENONG DISTRICT CRICKET ASSOCIATION - Turf 1 Round 9 (day 1)
A Spoljaric homecoming By JARROD POTTER DDCA Turf 1 - Round 9 (day 1) TWAS a mixed homecoming for Steve Spoljaric as he led Cranbourne away from perilous danger and towards victory in a matter of overs.
PARKFIELD v CRANBOURNE RETURNING back to the club he captained to a flag less than 12 months ago, Cranbourne (99 and 0/42) skipper Steve Spoljaric made the trek back to Dunblane Reserve to take on his beloved Parkfield (47). Dunblane Reserve proved the backdrop for a wicket-taking onslaught as neither side could stick at the crease. Jordan Cleland (33) gutsily held on as the scalps fell around him, before he finally succumbed as Nilochana Perera (5/28) and Shane Bell (3/34). There wasn’t much to smile about for Cranbourne by the end of its 40-over knock, failing to crack the ton and looking down the barrel at another defeat. Luckily for the Eagles, the script still had more surprises to reveal. Spoljaric (6/26) and Cam Kelly (4/18) would bowl unchanged to run absolute riot with the ball against Parkfield - dismissing the home side for spare change. Matt Aslett (20) was the best of a woeful batting card as it only took 27 overs for Spoljaric and Kelly to dissect the Bears. From battling to stay afloat to 52 runs ahead on the first innings, Cranbourne’s second go fared a lot better as Cleland (22 not out) and Brayden Roscoe (14 not out) stuck at it to set up an interesting second day on Saturday.
LYNDALE v SPRINGVALE SOUTH GRITTING its teeth and pushing towards the par
score, Lyndale (170) have already started delivering headaches against finals-bound Springvale South (4/59). Charles Thurson (40) and Ricky Foulstone (22 not out) made their influences felt with the bat as Springvale South sprayed 28 extras, which may yet prove critical in the run-chase. Yoshan Kumara (4/44) made up for his nine no-balls with four big scalps while Ruwantha Kellepotha (3/38) and Jarrod Armitage (2/48) finished the visitors off. The Bloods are on the hunt already, but have lost four important wickets in pursuit as Jackson Sketcher (10 not out) and Harry Staude (4 not out) survived the last push on Saturday from Lyndale.
HALLAM KALORA PARK v COOMOORA COOMOORA continued letting sides off the hook as Hallam Kalora Park (6/265) wriggled from the net after the Booths put the boot in.
Perera rescue falls 20 short By JARROD POTTER NOT even a gutsy century from Issy Perera could guide Noble Park (233) to victory against Oakleigh (253). In a VSDCA grand-final rematch, the heavy lifting was left to a handful of the Bulls as the rest capitulated against Ben Pinwill (5/74). Continuing a scintillating season, Perera (103) notched his second hundred in 2014/15 to keep hope alive for the home side. His 2014/15 efforts so far - 467 runs at 51.9 - have kept Noble Park alive in a number of close calls and his services were required again on Saturday... and in greater amounts than usual. Chris Lee (26) bunkered down - absorbing 92 balls of relentless pressure from the Oakleigh attack - to stick with the flying number four Perera while Rizan Mawzoon (28) belted a run-a-ball 28 to reel the target in closer and help out Perera in his own quickfire way. These partnerships were worth 71 and 67 respectively to bring the target within the Bulls’ grasp, but there were two aspects Perera didn’t have under control. He couldn’t keep his partners at the other end, as Noble Park lost wickets in the crunch moments, and Perera also ran out of overs. Either one of those partnerships could have blossomed into the game-winner, but Oakleigh stomped out the tail in lightningfast succession as Mawzoon and Dirk Vandergert (0) were run-out stopping any partnerships forming. Perera would raise his bat on the second ton in three rounds, but his mind was focused on the final 20 runs, which unfortunately would never come. Ash Perera (9) and Michael Klonaridis (1 not out) kept the tempo going, but Perera would finally succumb to Pinwill and bring to a close a sensational innings-defining knock. Noble Park falls to eighth on the VSDCA ladder and now face Bayswater away. ENDEAVOUR HILLS v MALVERN THE young Eagles soared highest, but Endeavour Hills (240) also found itself just short of a sizeable target against Malvern (8/256). Zach Allen (48) - fresh off his Victorian Under-19s duties - started the innings emphatically as he struck towards another halfton. He would be brought undone, after a 78run opening stand with Thomas Hafil (27), as his pegs were sent flying. Ben Swift (54) was the next young Eagle to get his eye in and bludgeoned his third half-century of the season to keep the score ticking along. The overs would creep up on Endeavour Hills and with wickets falling consistently, it spelled disaster. The last ditch efforts of Richard Saniga (26) and Vaughan Baxter (25) weren’t enough as the Eagles fell 16 short. Endeavour Hills is seventh and now take on wooden-spoon contenders Moorabbin. Enter Leigh Booth (70) - who relished the ball coming onto the bat and making light work of the opposition’s best. The two Booths notched a 151-run partnership - the second 150-or-more stand for the Hawks in consecutive rounds - and demoralised the Kangaroos run by run. Cory Booth raised the bat on his first significant score this season - his eighth DDCA century in a whopping career. The duo would come unstuck chasing the last morsels to add to the tally, but walked off to thunderous applause after the complete rescue.
DANDENONG WEST v NORTH DANDENONG IN a Dandy battle, the West (143) and North (2/34) are well-and-truly locked in for a nail biter. The Bulls struggled from the get-go as North Dandenong paved inroads with wicket after wicket. Anthony Brannan (48) dug in from the middle order alongside Matt Collett (25) to prevent a complete collapse at the hands of Northern spearhead Jurgen Andersen (5/38). Andersen left little meat on the Bulls’ carcass as the home side struggled to build any tangible lead. Brannan’s gallant knock would soon come to completion and after he left the tail did not wag much more, with Jamie Brown (11 not out) unbeaten. The Northern response revolved around Dean Gunawardana (17 not out) as he saw off Peter Atkinson’s (2/10) six over onslaught approaching the day’s end.
VSDCA - South East 1st XI Round 10 (day 2)
BUCKLEY RIDGES v MORDIALLOC Saliya Saman was tidy for Coomoora on a dog day for the visitors at Hallam Kalora Picture: JARROD POTTER Park. 133908 The Kangaroos hopped through the Hawks’ top order as Saliya Saman (1/21) and Joseph Hawke (1/57) kept the early going difficult for the home side. It would take Cory Booth (125) and Ben Hilliard (32) to begin the turnaround - as the duo notched 59 for the fourth wicket before Hilliard holed out.
BUCKLEY Ridges (1/12) was powerless to stop the rampaging Mordialloc (290). Leon Kennedy (68) started the pillaging of the Ridges’ attack - which was gallantly held together by Lucas Hoogenboom (4/41) and Matt Goodwright (1/70). At 5/136 the match was in the balance, but the Bloodhounds sniffed out another 150 as Chathura Athukorala (56) added to the rain with a boundary-laden display at the postage stampsized Park Oval. The Bloodhounds’ all-rounder in league with Cameron Tomkinson (34) finished the job the top order started to give Mordialloc the best part of 300 to defend next week.

SPORT WNBL - Round 15
Penny’s from heaven By JARROD POTTER DANDENONG barely escaped the riptide as the West Coast Waves crashed through the Rangers’ defences in the first half. Dandenong secured its eighth win in a row after a nail-biting 87-80 win over West Coast on Saturday afternoon. With the ABC cameras pointed at Dandenong Basketball Stadium for the final time, Dandenong and West Coast made the broadcast a memorable one. West Coast thoroughly dominated the first term as Lindsey Moore (17 points) dropped three treys in a matter of minute to leap out to a 2-10 lead. The Rangers could not muster any significant three-point shooting of their own - hitting only 3/20 for the afternoon - and left the scoring to those who could crash through the
Waves’ defence. Penny Taylor (25 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists) would be the one to give a master class in paint point accumulation, as she barrelled through West Coast’s talls Darcee Garbin and Cassie Harberts to notch 10 points in the third term alone. Alongside the Opals’ champion was WNBA champion Cappie Pondexter (21 points, 8 rebounds) - the only Ranger to hit her straps from beyond the perimeter as she hit all three of Dandenong’s outside tally. Dandenong expanding their break to 63-50 at one stage, but the Waves found ways to stay in the clash. West Coast wouldn’t lie down and accept defeat without one last assault. Levelling the scores at 71-all by the half-way mark of the fourth quarter, West Coast’s Harberts (11 points, 12 rebounds) smashed into the Dandenong defence and put up
some important rebounds and points and gave Dandenong one last headache. Cooler heads would prevail as Taylor powered through, flicked off the assist to Tegan Cunningham (12 points, 5 rebounds) to take the lead before adding another two from the free throw line to calm the West Coast swell and eventually notch the seven-point victory. “It’s one of those days where things didn’t go to plan and we didn’t have the energy and yet still got 87 points and won,” Dandenong coach Mark Wright said. “We had to do it hard and had to eke out a win somehow, so luckily we’ve got Penny and Cappie there.” Dandenong has secured its third spot in the WNBL finals series and will start its run towards the post-season this weekend in an away match against the Melbourne Boomers.

Barksdale on the money
RACING FEVER
By JASON ADAMS THURSDAY evening at Sandown Park, and Barksdale recorded his first city win in emphatic style for Catani trainer Graeme Jose. Barksdale was explosive to begin from box seven and gained an early break on his rivals shortly after box rise. Despite a late charge from Dyna Chaser, Barksdale held on to his lead to win by one-and-ahalf lengths. “It was a good gutsy win as he was under a fair bit of pressure around the final bend - for the size of the dog he’s got some really good pace,” Jose said. Barksdale’s won at odds of $14.40, an unsavoury result for favourite punters however not for Jose. “Judging by his run last week I thought to myself, he ran the second fastest out of all the heats he is certainly an each-way chance.” “I don’t bet too often, but when I saw he was $18 fixed odds…I couldn’t resist having something on.” Although Barksdale stopped the clock at a slick 29.60 in what was just his 12th career start, Jose believes we are yet to see the best of his exciting chaser. “I really think he’s got some im-

Off like a spark, Barksdale stormed home from box seven to take out its first win on a metropolitan track. 133904 Picture: SUPPLIED provement in him to be honest, with a clear run I think he can take that next step.” Owned by New South Welshman Peter Jovanic, Jose acquired Barksdale from one of the most highly regarded trainers in the country, Kel Greenough.
“Kel couldn’t fit in him his kennel, as a result he and Peter were nice enough to give the greyhound to me.” Jose is no stranger to the sport of greyhound racing, having won multiple features over the years including the 2009 Sandown Cup with superstar chaser Manta Lad.
SPORTINGBET Park, Sandown will stage the annual Greater Dandenong Race Day over the Hillside track on Saturday, February 7 and a super meeting is in store. The meeting will feature two rich events for two-year-olds plus the final of the Swettenham Stud Summer Championship. The $250,000 R. L. Inglis Premier (1000 metres) is restricted to twoyear-olds nominated for the Inglis Race Series that were offered at the 2014 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale. There is an added Super Vobis nominators’ bonus of $7000 and an owner’s bonus of $23,000. Aa a set weight event it is certainly worth winning and will attract a strong field. The $150,750 Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes (1000 metres) also carries a Super Vobis nominators’ bonus of $10,000. The race is a set weight event for two-year-olds with penalties for the winners of certain races.
To add to that there is the $80,000 Super Vobis Three-Year-Old Plate (1300 metres) which will have an added nominators’ bonus of $7000 and an owner’s bonus of $23,000. A great deal of interest will centre on the $100,000 Swettenham Stud Summer Championship Final (1600 metres). The Championship comprises 10 heats and one final with points of 10 for each heat winner going through to two points for eighth and one point for the remainder of runners. All heat winners are exempt from the ballot in the final. Excess horses will be decided by the points earned. With nine races programmed it is sure to be a great days racing and a special day for the Greater Dandenong community. Attractive dining packages are available on Saturday 7 February and bookings can be made by ringing 9257 7100.

THE latest Lexus, the ES 350, has the now familiar spindle grille, a bold shape that’s unmistakable thanks to its sheer size. Flanking this grille are halogen projector-style headlamps incorporating L-shaped LED daytime running lights. LEDs are also used in the rear lights. The new ES series is referred to as a four-door sedan but has a sleek shape that almost puts it into the four-door coupe class. The shape isn’t just about style, the co-efficient of drag of drag (Cd) is an impressively good 0.27. Sports Luxury occupants can settle into ventilated front seats, with 10-way power adjustment. Climate control is spread over three zones. The rear seats are heated. Unwanted glare and heat can be warded off by rear side sunshades. We loved the dashboard styling with its wide tapered ends. This is almost a full five-seater, there’s no skimping on seating space, with even the centre spot in the back being reasonably wide and comfortable. There’s Bluetooth telephone and audio streaming and digital radio. The specially designed Mark Levinson audio system has been designed specifically for Lexus and powers no fewer than 15 speakers and sounds brilliant.
The Lexus ES 350 has a signature spindle grille fronting up a sleek, almost coupe, body. Thankfully the Lexus remote Touch Controller has been improved to provide more resistance so it no longer shoots all over the screen although we still prefer just about everyone else’s controllers. The driver’s mood lets them select from the Lexus drive mode system. Standard safety features in all Lexus ES variants include 10 airbags; ABS brakes; stability and traction control; pedestrian protection system; tyre pressure warning; blind spot monitor; hill-start assist; and reversing camera and parking sensors. Active safety in the Sports Lux-
ury uses a pre-collision system that beeps and flashes if it senses a crash appears imminent. Emergency braking is also applied. Active cruise control keeps the ES Sports Luxury at a given time (not distance) from a vehicle in front. The front seats are spacious, and are supportive without being overly soft. There’s good rear legroom and headroom back there is fine for anyone under about 1.9 metres. Comfort is high on the list and the midsize Lexus has the ability to iron out almost all that Australian roads toss under it. It’s perhaps not quite in the
Commodore and Falcon class in the bush, but doesn’t miss by much. In what has always been the Lexus way the ES series is near silent in its running with the engine being well damped and the thick glass and multi-insulation body areas keeping noise, vibration and harshness well outside. Lexus ES has few sporting pretensions and is aimed squarely at those who want luxurious cruising and commuting rather than driving excitement. Handling is competent and there’s always the feeling that if pushed too hard the car will be mindful of your safety.
