Triple the school fun for everyone HALLAM triplets Charlee, Harry and Shay were all smiles when they started school for the first time this week. The new students, who started at Oatlands Primary in Narre Warren, smiled even more this week when Channel 7 news filmed them getting ready for the big day. Mum Nicole Tumbas said her triplets hadn’t quite understood what she meant when she told them they were going to be on television, but they were soon having fun in front of the cameras. “The kids were so excited, they like being on camera,” Ms Tumbas said. “I think they’re so used to me taking photos of them since they were very young – I was like the paparazzi.” Ms Tumbas said Charlee, Harry and Shay had loved their first day of school, for which fate had landed them all in the same Prep class. “They had a great day, they’re loving it,” she said. “They’ve settled in pretty well.” Oatlands Primary School principal Wes Holloway said Charlee, Harry and Shay were one of two groups of triplets starting at the school this year, in addition to several pairs of twins. News photographer ROB CAREW visited Oatlands Primary this week to capture all the action. 133812
■ Police raids roll up cannabis farms...
Weeded out By LACHLAN MOORHEAD A MAN has been arrested after police seized more than 130 cannabis plants from two properties in Doveton and Mulgrave last Wednesday. The 20-year-old man, from Mulgrave, faced Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Thursday
where his case was adjourned. It’s understood police raided the Mulgrave property in Grantham Terrace first, around 7.30am on Wednesday, seizing more than 100 cannabis plants in different stages of growth and arresting the 20-year-old. Their investigation then led
police to a second property in Banksia Street, Doveton, about 3.30pm where another 24 plants were seized. It’s believed both operations were linked. The arrest comes after police seized another large amount of cannabis with a combined street
value of $1 million earlier this month, from properties in Berwick and Cranbourne North. Police raided both houses as part of an ongoing investigation, but it’s not believed the Berwick and Cranbourne raids are linked. A 44-year-old man was ar-
rested after the property was raided in Baddeley Circuit, in Cranbourne North, on Thursday 8 January. A 20-year-old man was also arrested on Thursday 22 January after police raided the second property in Venables Court in Berwick.
Narre Warren Police Detective Senior-Constable Andrew Pybus said it was good to get the cannabis “off the streets”. Anyone with more information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or file a confidential report at www.crimestoppers.com.au.

A TAC spokesperson said the campaign focused on the potential for a lapse in concentration caused by mobile phones and music players. Anthony Bartl, a TAC client, was hit by a car when he was six years old. Anthony sustained a broken spinal cord in the accident and now acts as a passionate TAC advocate. Warning afoot over pedestrian safety NARRE Warren North MP and Roads Minister Luke Donnellan has called for greater pedestrian safety after new data indicated pedestrian deaths in Victoria rose by 22 per cent last year. Mr Donnellan joined Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner for Road Policing Robert Hill and car accident victim Anthony Bartl last month to stress the safety message ahead of the Australian Open, expected to draw roughly 700,000 pedestrians over two weeks. Last year 44 pedestrians were killed on Victorian roads, up from 26 in 2013. Of those 44, 73 per cent were men, while 29 per cent were aged 70 or over. “If you’re on foot, be safe around roads. Every passing car is potentially lethal and no text message is worth your life,” Mr Donnellan
KIDS who’ve spent their holidays running, rolling and resting on the Dandenong Civic Square lawn will be pleased to know it’s staying put. On Monday night last week councillors approved plans for City of Greater Dandenong to buy the land at the Thomas Street corner from Places Victoria for $900,000. The council’s business manager Paul Kearsley said discussions had concluded that the municipality would be the most suitable owner of the land. Places Victoria acquired the space for future development to do just that, but previous agreements secured the council the first opportunity to purchase it. Mr Kearsley said the council was under no obligation to develop the 1006 square metre space but if it did, work would have to complement the existing square and building. The council already owns the land where the civic centre and library stand and manages the Crown land where the square sits.

JOHN Jakupi is no stranger to Casey. The 41-year-old clinical psychologist grew up in Endeavour Hills and went to school across the tracks at the long demolished Doveton High School. He is also responsible for setting up four bulk-billing mental health facilities in Narre Warren, Cranbourne, Pakenham and Frankston within the past 24 months which are specifically aimed at children and adults who cannot afford private practice counselling. The facilities, under the banner of South Eastern Counselling and Psychology, were inundated with patients from all throughout Casey and Cardinia and had a waiting list within three months. Two and a half years ago John watched as the ABC broadcast a heart-breaking Four Corners special detailing the severity of youth mental health problems and teenage suicide in the City of Casey. Entitled There is No 3G in Heaven, the Four Corners episode focused on a community summit held at the Casey Council chambers to address the issue, convened by Holt MP Anthony Byrne. It served as John’s inspiration. “It was actually that TV show that prompted me because that show raised a lot of problems and a lot of
at crisis point. “It was a problem, it’s always been a problem and it always will be a problem but I didn’t yet see it as a crisis,” he said. “It wasn’t until the numbers escalated and I’ve gone ‘wait a minute, the schools in Berwick are now being affected by this’. “I said OK, this is in our lap right now, what the hell are we doing?” The South Eastern Counselling and Psychology service now has a team of 26 staff working across its four facilities. Without knowing exact statistics, John feels the service must be having an impact on improving mental health throughout the municipality judging by the waiting lists and he said he would like to consider sending staff into local schools to verify the progress. But John also stressed that the service catered for all age groups, including adults, seniors and those children younger than 13. “I know it sounds a bit cliched but I like to think that if one of my kids were struggling, they could find help pretty easily and not have to worry about their income,” John said. Security guard stabbed at tavern A CRANBOURNE man was arrested after allegedly stabbing a security guard at the Hampton Park Tavern on the weekend. It’s understood the 59-year-old man had been evicted from the tavern earlier on Saturday night, before returning about 9.30pm armed with a knife. The man then stabbed a security guard in the tavern’s foyer, before another patron rushed out to help the guard. After a scuffle the offender fell to the ground where he hit his head and was rushed to hospital with suspected bleeding on the brain. The offender was released from hospital the next day and charged with several offences. He is set to appear at the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court in April. The security guard sustained minor injuries to his abdomen and forearm. It’s not believed the guard was involved in the earlier eviction of the Cranbourne man from the tavern. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or file a confidential report at www.crimestoppers.com.au. Adam Haines with his dog Buddha. 133747

Old dog chip block By CASEY NEILL ADAM Haines is urging pet owners to update microchip contact details after battling to have his frail, 19-year-old dog returned to his care. City of Casey rangers picked up Buddha, a lhasa aspo, from the Animal Emergency Centre in Hallam and took it to the Cranbourne pound. He went missing from behind locked gates in Mr Haines’ Keysborough front yard about 7pm on Sunday 25 January. “We spent hours searching for him,” he said.
“He can’t walk the few metres back from the park. He’s partly deaf, he’s partly blind. “He’s been to the vet a couple of times in the past three months, because we’re monitoring now - we’re monitoring for that time that he can’t go on any longer. “I knew someone had picked him up.” Mr Haines encountered trouble retrieving his beloved pooch when Buddha’s microchip details were linked to his former partner. “My ex and I split up 17 years ago, and he was microchipped 18
years ago,” he said. “When you’re young and you’re living life, you take for granted your little mates. “Losing him and not being able to find him was one thing, but to know he’s been locked away because of my irresponsibility ... “People need to be aware of what could happen.” Casey community safety manager Caroline Bell said the council had some concerns with the dog’s health and well-being and sought a vet report. She said on Tuesday that the
council would contact Mr Haines to discuss the vet’s report and to make arrangements for the pet’s collection. They were reunited on Wednesday. “To ensure lost pets can be reunited with their owners, we’d like to remind residents that all pets should be registered with their council, microchipped and kept securely in their yard,” Ms Bell said. She said it was also important for residents to update their registration details with their council and microchipping database Central Animals Register when they moved house.
Old folks are set free CFA members rushed to Eumemmerring last week after a group of seniors became stuck in a hotel lift. It’s understood 10 elderly people had to be rescued from the Artura Hotel lift in Doveton Avenue around 9pm on Sunday. They were stuck in the lift for about 10 minutes and were released uninjured.
Twelve car break-ins POLICE are again urging Casey residents to keep their cars locked after 12 vehicles were broken into in two Hallam streets on Sunday night. It is understood that the cars had been left unlocked in Saffron Drive and Fitzgerald Drive. Police are reminding residents to lock their cars as incidents of car theft continue to rise in Casey. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or file a confidential report at www.crimestoppers.com.au.

WHAT’S IN A NAME DELVES INTO THE FASCINATING STORIES AND PERSONALITIES BEHIND SOME OF THE CITY’S BEST KNOWN STREET NAMES. THIS WEEK THE JOURNAL LOOKS AT POUND ROAD.
Pioneer families were bound by the pound POUND Road is not named after an individual but rather the animal pound that once existed at the Dandenong South end of the road. Three pioneer families settled the bulk of the land that is now Hampton Park, Hallam and Dandenong South, the three suburbs linked by Pound Road. The first European settler in the area was Isaac Edey who arrived in 1842. He owned 572 acres east of Dandenong where Hallam Road is today. The Edey family homestead was situated where Ormond Road is now. In 1852 Peter Davis successfully bid at auction in Melbourne for 316 acres of land on the Princes Highway where the old GMH and Heinz factories would later be built. In 1854 Mr Davis expanded his holdings by purchasing the full triangle of land bounded by Cranbourne, Pound
WHAT’S IN A NAME? and Hallam roads, giving him a total of 885 acres. He paid the princely sum of £1 per acre. In 1863 David Duncan purchased 156 acres on Pound Road, opposite a wellknown parcel of land known by everyone as Garner’s Paddock. In 1857 James Garner had opened a shoe forge on his Hampton Park land but later shifted his business to Dandenong. All three properties were fenced with redgum posts and nine-foot rails and adjoined Garner’s Paddock. Garner’s Paddock was used as the
Dandenong Pound for many years, hence the name Pound Road. The pound’s yards were situated on the hill on the South Gippsland Highway between the Dandenong Bypass and Greens Road. Cattle were often impounded during the day only to mysteriously disappear at night. At the end of the 19th century the three original families subdivided their land into smaller farms of up to 40 hectares. Until Hampton Park was declared an official sub-division in 1917-’18, ratepayers of the area were listed variously as living in Eumemmerring, Dandenong or Lyndhurst. LOOKING BACK 4 February 1915 Memories of Home UNDER the darkness of alien skies A youthful soldier wounded, lay The glimmer of death was in his eyes, While his life blood slowly ebbed away A twinkling light on the distant plain A well remembered moonlit hill The evening air fresh sweet with rain; Sad thoughts of home that haunt him still. His face grew dark with the shade of death, As the shadows of evening creep He drew a last faint fluttering breath, And closed his eyes in an endless sleep. 50 years ago 3 February 1965 Beware this heartless trickster ELDERLY women living alone are warned by
Dandenong CIB not to admit to their homes a well-dressed, 50-year-old man who is a glib talker and a quick-thinker. Detectives say that the caller is an experienced confidence man who is employing a new technique. He ascertains the names and the religion of elderly women who live alone and the names of some of their friends. He pays a social call and talks sympathetically about religious matters. His stay is short, but he is usually back on the doorstep in a few minutes distressed at having left a wallet containing money behind which can’t be found, then follows request for a small loan for half an hour until he recovers his car which is at the garage. Elderly women have loaned him various amounts of money and never seen him again.
Police say this plausible confidence man has been working this heartless trick for nearly seven years. They say he has not yet made a mistake that would lead to his arrest. 20 years ago 6 February 1995 Cheers! We're 130 Years old. EVERY year is memorable for the Journal, but 1995 promises more than its share of special appeal because the south east region’s oldest newspaper will celebrate its 130th anniversary. The first issue of the then South Bourke and Mornington Journal was published in 1865 with the intention of reporting all the news from one of the fastest-growing areas of a fledgling Victoria. Now, 130 years later, little has changed The Journal still brings you all the news and
the south east growth corridor still leads the state. 5 years ago 1 February 2010 School Attacked A PASSER-By stopped a deliberately lit fire from causing major damage to Doveton North Primary School last Friday week. A police spokesman said offenders entered the school grounds about 9.20pm. They threw eggs at a portable classroom, smashed windows and threw a lit toilet roll into a classroom. A passer-by who saw the fire called triple zero and used a water container from his car to put out the flames. Thanks to his swift action the damage was limited to $500. - Compiled by the Dandenong and District Historical Society

Debbie Soward with her son Brayden, 15, showing a move he picked up from his Zumba Picture: ROB CAREW class. 133817
By LACHLAN MOORHEAD IT TOOK Debbie Soward almost 15 years to find a hobby her son enjoyed. Brayden suffers from autism and Debbie often found the teenager would not want to continue with activities soon after he started them. That was until Debbie, from Eumemmerring, signed up her 15-year-old son to Zumba lessons at the Endeavour Hills Neighbourhood Centre. “He absolutely loves it,” Debbie said. “For a long time there I could find nothing he enjoyed outside school. “I think it’s the actual music, the Spanish music. “I’m just totally amazed; I
can’t believe the outcome of it.” Debbie said she had spotted an advertisement in the local paper for free Zumba for Kids classes at the Neighbourhood Centre and, knowing that Brayden seemed to enjoy dancing, thought she’d encourage him to give it a go. “With kids like Brayden it’s often hard to find what they do and don’t like. “He loves dance but trying to figure out where he fits in all these things can be a bit of jigsaw puzzle. “I wondered if he would engage in it, but right from the first session he was fantastic. “His whole face lights up when he does the class.” She said Brayden would keep taking the Zumba class for
as long as he could. Teacher Claudia said she has been so impressed with Brayden’s progress that there could certainly be a spot for him in the adult class. “He is amazing, he puts his heart and soul into it and is a real inspiration for me,” Claudia said. “He’s even learning to sing the songs in Spanish.” The Zumba for Kids program was originally funded under a City of Casey community grant but as that has finished, the classes are now fee-for-service at $70 for a 10-week term. The classes are held on Tuesdays at 4.30pm during school terms at the Endeavour Hills Neighbourhood Centre. Contact 9700 3789.

THE Year of the Goat will be officially welcomed in at a spectacular Lunar New Year celebration in Springvale on Sunday 15 February. A crowd of up to 80,000 is expected to enjoy Asian culture and traditions including food and entertainment from China, Vietnam, Japan, Korea and Mongolia. Greater Dandenong Mayor Sean O’Reilly is among those who are looking forward to the spectacular celebration which draws thousands of visitors to the city.
“The festival is a great opportunity for local families to participate in an event which promotes harmony, tolerance and understanding,” Cr O’Reilly said. “It showcases Springvale to a much wider audience as statistics show that a large number of people who attend the event live outside Greater Dandenong.” The council has worked in partnership with the Springvale Asian Business Association to organise the event, which is now in its 23rd year.
Cr O’Reilly said the partnership ensured the cultural significance and quality of the event was maintained and strengthened. Visitors will enjoy a wide range of street food and beverage stalls from more than 50 multicultural vendors as well as arts, crafts and novelty stalls, family entertainment and largescale amusement rides and carnival attractions. The festival, centered around Buckingham and Balmoral avenues, runs from 10am until 10pm.

Raid fear ends factory four-day protest By CASEY NEILL RUMOURS that the riot squad was on its way sent workers packing from an 80-hour lunchroom protest at a Dandenong factory on Friday. Representatives from International Flavours and Fragrances and the staff were due to attend a hearing at Fair Work to consider the dispute on Saturday. Staff at the Frankston-Dandenong Road premises arrived at work about 6am last Tuesday to find they were banned from going inside. The American-owned multinational company supplies flavourings to Australia’s biggest food producers in liquid, powder and spray. National Union of Workers (NUW) spokeswoman Emma Kerin said the workers had been due to start protected industrial action that day. She said enterprise bargaining agreement (EBA) negotiations started last June and had stalled because IFF insisted on cutting conditions. “Protected industrial action was going to be a ban on paperwork,” Ms Kerin said. “That led to quite an extreme response which was a lockout. “They then voted to stay in the lunchroom because what they’d really like to do is go to work.” Worker Arthur Ingles said rumours were circulating about 4pm on Friday that the riot squad would remove them so they opted to leave. “This was never going to be a violent protest,” he said. “We weren’t going to be
mannequins in a training drill. “We knew from the beginning this was a trespass. It’s not the end of the protest. “The picket is going to be maintained. The action is still going to be maintained from outside, not inside.” And Ms Kerin said workers had achieved a victory with a petition on www.coworker.org calling for IFF Asia Pacific regional operations manager Arjan Koudijs to meet with employees and end the lockout. “The workers have agreed that they’ll exit the site today of their own accord with their heads held high,” she said. “The petition has worked and management from Asia Pacific has come. “They are at the site now. They’ll be in Fair Work tomorrow (Saturday).” The petition said workers wanted to be heard and genuinely negotiate a workplace agreement that benefited both parties. “We were promised there would be a cultural change from management. But things have only gotten worse. Local management couldn’t care less about us,” it said. Ms Kerin said union members and community supporters set up barbecues in front of the premises during the lock-in and brought in food to make sandwiches. “Family and friends have been bringing down blankets and sleeping bags,” she said. Mr Ingles said these efforts and a visit from outspoken veteran priest and media personality Father Bob Maguire on Friday had boosted morale.
Workers protest outside the IFF factory. 133857 “Everyone was really, really happy to see him,” he said. “He was as outraged as anyone else at the way events have unfolded here. It’s the unseen support that really keeps you going. “Sacrifice is the only word you can use. None of us undertake work these days because we’re bored.” Mr Ingles said they were foregoing much-needed income for the sake of principles.
He said workers wanted to hold onto two 10-minute paid breaks each day, a $50 a day bonus for sick leave not taken and payout of personal leave on termination after seven years’ service. “That represents a lot of money to a lot of people,” he said. “That’s been built into their costings from the day it was incorporated into the EBA. “You can hardly expect us
Picture: GARY SISSONS to be accountable for how they manage their liabilities.” Mr Ingles said management on Friday 23 January told workers to turn up for work on Tuesday to be addressed. “But we found a notice on the perimeter fence advising we were locked out because of our decision to take protected industrial action,” he said. “This whole scenario should be a partnership. “The company has needs
that we satisfy and the company satisfies needs that we have. “No-one is winning out of this situation. But the alternatives are worse than where we find ourselves at the moment. “The alternatives that the company want to incorporate into the EBA would create much more pain for a much longer period of time.” The Journal contacted IFF but did not receive any response.

Onlookers told to move on
A DEDICATED Doveton woman whose volunteer career spans more than 40 years was recognised for her devotion last Monday when one of the City of Casey’s highest honours was bestowed on her. Veronica Hill is a stranger to few around the Doveton traps and has had her hand in more organisations than she can count. Mrs Hill said she was “still in shock” days after she was announced as the Casey Citizen of the Year for 2015. “I was sitting back enjoying the evening and thinking it was all very good,” she said. “I never thought in my wildest dreams (I would win).” Her hard work began when Mrs Hill became a founding member of the Doveton Little Athletics Club alongside her late husband Jim. “When my children were young there wasn’t a great deal for them to do,” she said. “We travelled elsewhere to let them do Little Athletics and decided there was a need for it in this area. “Together with my husband we helped start one, but he was the driving force.” As a result of her commitment she is a life member of the Dandenong Little Athletics Centre and has also been involved with local netball. Mrs Hill said that it had been a “pleasure to work with children through various types of groups“. “It’s a joy to be able to encourage young people to be the best they can be,” she said.
POLICE will now have the power to move on spectators at hoon gatherings in Greater Dandenong. Councillors last Tuesday approved amendments to local laws that included expanding regulated activities provisions to encompass public gatherings, processions, rallies and demonstrations. The provisions now also cover people organising or participating in an event, for instance where someone has used social media to arrange a gathering but has not attended. The changes followed submissions from police trying to curb hoon behaviour and will enable officers to require any person at an unauthorised gathering to leave. The council report said the municipality was in the top 10 locations for hooning and occasionally slipped into the top five. “Police currently have a range of powers available to deal with the drivers of vehicles engaging in these activities,” it said. “However, they do not have any general powers available to them for moving spectators away from a gathering. Being able to disperse spectators quickly is seen as an important aspect of reducing the risk of injury to these people.”
Fast pace for devotion
Casey Citizen of the year, Veronica Hill. 133776 “I just love that sort of thing.” She said while she had been involved with a “multitude” of different things there was one group close to her heart. “My one main love would be the Little Athletics,” she said.
Picture: ROB CAREW
“I’ve been involved with it for more than 40 years.” “It’s been a passion all my life.” Mrs Hill said she enjoys anything to do with younger children.
“I love encouraging them to be involved,” she said. In recent years her work on the Doveton Show committee has consumed her time. “I get an enormous pleasure out of it,” she said.
Mrs Hill and Jim were also renowned for their impressive Christmas light display. They were enjoyed by many visitors and raised more than $10,000 for the Very Special Kids charity.

BATTLE PLAN INTERVIEW WITH JUDY T. TRUC ON HER BUSINESS STRATEGIES - LJ HOOKER HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR LEADERSHIP STYLE? I lead by example. I show my staff what can be achieved if you put all your heart into what you are doing. I teach and train my staff individually and don’t hold any secrets back. I use a straightforward and honest approach to lead them in the right direction. HOW IMPORTANT IS A GREAT TEAM TO OPERATIONAL SUCCESS? A great team is what makes a successful company. You need to have a successful team to enable your business to grow. HOW DO YOU KEEP YOUR TEAM MOTIVATED? The team is offered very high pay with high commission plus bonuses. Always let your team know that you support them and show that you support them. WHAT ARE YOUR FIVE TOP TIPS TO CREATING A GREAT TEAM? 1. Look for people who are well educated and who have excellent general knowledge. 2. Find the right people for the job.
3. Provide a high level of ongoing training and support. 4. Keep the team motivated. 5. Trust the team you have employed and put together. WHAT IS THE KEY TO YOUR TEAM’S SUCCESS? The key to our team’s success is thorough and comprehensive training - I train all my staff personally. I put time and effort into my training. Each person is different so you need to train them all in a different way. The people who I employ are extremely motivated and all show a willingness to learn.
Dandenong North 80 Gladstone Road WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME OF THE GREATEST CHALLENGES YOU’VE EXPERIENCED WHEN BUILDING A TEAM AND HOW HAVE YOU OVERCOME THEM? Employing the wrong person. As soon as you know they are not right for the job then let them go straight away. Learn from your mistakes so that they are not repeated. Training is also a big challenge. Ongoing training is vital to a successful team. You have to keep going and never give up. If you fall, stand up, dust yourself off and keep going.

NEW HOMES & LAND
THE BRACKEN IS A BONUS AT only $189,000 for 26 squares, The Bracken ticks all the must-have boxes when it comes to a smart family home. Red Bluff Homes has designed The Bracken with discerning family buyers or retirees in mind. The spacious and modern design offers a layout that flows smoothly from the smart entrance through to the fantastic optional outdoor living area at the opposite end of the home. In between is a master suite complete with ensuite and walk-in robe, a theatre room, three additional bedrooms, separate laundry, kitchen and large open plan meals/family area. Flexibility is the cornerstone of The Bracken’s thoughtful design. The team at Red Bluff Homes know that each family is different and that when it comes to utilising space, choice and flexibility are essential. With this in mind, The Bracken can easily be converted to a four-bedroom home by utilising the spacious retreat adjacent to the master suite. Alternatively, the retreat can be used as a study, perfect for anyone running a home business, or incorporated into the master suite creating a luxurious private oasis for busy parents. The kitchen is stylish and functional with walk-in pantry, and stainless steel appliances. The kitchen looks out over the open-plan meals/family area to the optional outdoor living area at the rear. The impressive entertaining area would be perfect for barbecues and
parties and also provides an outdoor play space for children. Sliding doors off the family/meals area create a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor living. Carpet and tiles and service connections
are standard with The Bracken, as is the use of low-maintenance Colorbond on the roof, guttering and downpipes. Add your choice of any of the following at no extra cost: * Roofed outdoor area;
* Nine-foot ceilings; * Stone benchtops in the kitchen; or * Evaporative cooling. For further details and a copy of the inclusions list and floor plan contact Red Bluff homes on 9709 0400.

ROOM TO MOVE HOMES STILL BELOW PREVIOUS PRICE PEAK While attention has focused on Victoria’s auction boom and the increase in prices across the state, particularly since spring 2013, a number of regional Victorian towns are yet to reach their peak property prices of 2010. Top of the list is Horsham with a median price of $167,500 over the year ending 30 September 2014, almost $20,000 below its median for the year to 30 September 2010. Given that median prices are slightly below what they were during the previous market peak, it offers the prospect that prices have room for growth.
This is positive news for sellers, with expected price growth, and also for buyers looking to buy immediately and seeking affordable properties. And Morwell, with a median house price of $160,000 over the 12 months, is about 10 per cent below its 2010 peak so it provides the potential for positive growth for Gippsland buyers who are looking for competitively priced properties. The well located town, which is nestled between coast and country and on a key rail link to Melbourne, provides the potential of an excellent long-term investment.
With Melbourne’s rising house prices, it offers the opportunity of a foothold on the property ladder to those first home buyers and families who are on a budget and are looking to regional Victoria properties which have not yet reached their 2010 peak. And although there are no guarantees, these properties also offer the prospect of capital growth. Other centres which are also below their 2010 peak include Maffra, 8 per cent less at $225,000, Warrnambool, 7 per cent less at $300,000, Daylesford, 4 per cent less at $354,500 and Wodonga, also 4
per cent less at $265,000. In metropolitan Melbourne, Macrae on the Mornington Peninsula, with a median price of $500,000, topped the list of suburbs below their 2010 peak. It was 20 per cent below its 12-month median of $625,000 median at 31 December 2010. While the REIV expects house prices to continue to remain solid in 2015, the market is likely to be more evenly balanced, although it may be given a boost if the Reserve Bank further lowers interest rates. In the next six months we expect the market to remain positive.

Nations show their support FEDERAL Labor MP Anthony Byrne honoured 30 people from throughout the community during the annual Holt Australia Day Awards last week. The Holt MP presented the awards at the Day of Nations celebrations in Hampton Park on Monday last week where a large crowd of friends and families gathered to support the recipients. “I congratulate all those receiving a Holt Australia Day Award for their exemplary community spirit and endless hours of volunteer work making our community a better and safer place to live,” Mr Byrne said. “These people do not get the same accolades as celebrities in the media but in their own quiet Australian way they do tremendous work and make other people’s lives better.” Resident TeHeapera Nikora was among the recipients and was awarded for her involvement at the Centre for Multicultural Youth. TeHeapera, of Maori heritage, has been committed to improving the perception of young people within her community in Melbourne. As a youth facilitator in 2013-’14, she helped organise community consultations among young people from different backgrounds.

Aimie Clydesdale fills big shoes By JARROD POTTER A CHANGING of the guard, at least temporarily, has been a boon for Dandenong Rangers’ WNBL basketballer Aimie Clydesdale. Following mid-season knee surgery for Dandenong’s chief play-caller Kathleen Macleod, her absence gave plenty of opportunity for Endeavour Hills-based Clydesdale (13 points, 7 assists) to step up and show her potential in the starting line-up. Clydesdale has made a seamless move from the bench to a starter after Macleod’s injury three rounds ago, and has proved she is a star on the rise in the midst of a breakout WNBL season. With 13 points and seven assists in Dandenong’s 95-64 win over Adelaide in Round 14, all signs are pointing up for the 21-year-old. “It came about in pretty unfortunate circumstances - losing Kath - and they’re hard shoes to fill but I’m just trying to use the opportunity and just give something to the
team,” Clydesdale said. “Obviously I can’t produce as many points as Kath or whatnot, but I’m just trying to bring what I can. “Trying to use my speed - people always tell me I’m fast - so I’m trying to take advantage of it.” With four years of WNBL experience under her belt, Clydesdale believes her success has come about in the right way as she’s earned the coach’s confidence to give her the ball in Macleod’s absence. “I guess just putting in the work - I’ve been with Dandenong for four or five seasons now so I did my time and I’m slowly getting better and Mark’s (coach Mark Wright) having more confidence to put me on the court,” Clydesdale said. It helps to have an Olympic Games gold medallist and a pair of Australian Opals running the court alongside you and Clydesdale has relished lining up with WNBA stars Cappie Pondexter and Penny Taylor.
“It’s been really good - they make you look better than you are - all I have to do is get them the ball and they’ll finish it,” Clydesdale said. “I’ve learned so much off them - Penny Taylor, Cappie Pondexter and Kath - over the last few years and it’s been really good.” Rangers’ coach Mark Wright was impressed with Clydesdale’s progression and thinks she has done everything right in her first major step up to the starting five. “I thought Aimie Clydesdale was absolutely wonderful and it was her best game (Round 14),” Wright said. “She’s revelling in that responsibility to being the starting point guard and it looks like it’s the emergence of Aimie Clydesdale. “I’m so excited for her - she’s grabbed the opportunity with both hands.” Dandenong sit third on the WNBL ladder and played West Coast at home in the ABC Match of the Week, on Saturday afternoon. Top Stingrays sample USA By JARROD POTTER ONE of the best 35 young footballers in the country. It’s quite the glowing recommendation three Dandenong Stingrays’ TAC Cup footballers have received after earning their tickets to the United States last month as part of the NAB AFL Academy Level Two Squad. Put through their paces in a high-intensity training program at the elite sports facility - The IMG Academy, in Bradenton, Florida - Gach Nyuon, Kieran Collins and Jacob Weitering were drilled, tested and evaluated under the watchful eyes of Academy coaches and AFL club recruiters alike. With 14 club interviews at the 10-day camp and benefitting from the hard slog of the training program, Nyuon, 17, from Springvale South, feels pretty fortunate to have been given the chance to take his football to the next level before the start of the season. “I reckon I was pretty lucky the advantage we have over the other players that aren’t in the academy, the facilities we use and the coaches we get, we’re very lucky and I’m just trying to take in and learn as much as I can,” Nyuon said. “They pretty much taught us to push a lot harder - you can take more than you think your body can take if you actually push yourself that little bit extra. “All the hard work pretty much, with a little support from the boys you can achieve a lot.” The program carries on from the now defunct AIS-AFL Academy and while the players didn’t participate in an exhibition match this time around, the benefits of the camp were enormous for the trio who are set to star in this year’s upcoming TAC Cup.
Getting to the finish line by any means necessary, the radio control cars flew around Picture: JARROD POTTER Adrenalin Arena for a 24-hour mega-race. 133905
Take two for the A Team By JARROD POTTER
Three lucky Stingrays - Gach Nyuon (front), Keiran Collins (left) and Jacob Weitering (right)- just returned from a 10Picture: AFL day high intensity camp in Florida. 133911 A knee injury kept Nyuon - a 200-cm ruck/forward prospect - from playing most of last year, but with a full pre-season under his belt, coupled with his Academy training program, Nyuon hopes to excel and make a big impact whether in a Stingrays or Vic Country jumper. “Didn’t play much footy last season, had a few injuries, so I just want to play a full season with the TAC Cup and hopefully play some games at the nationals too,” Nyuon said. “Everything is fine and pre-season is going well and
running pretty smooth - we’ve got some practice matches for Stingrays coming up in a couple of weeks.” Affiliated with Narre Warren Football Club in the newly formed South East Football Netball League, Nyuon’s local ambitions this season are to get back to Fox Road if he can find a free weekend in an extremely hectic football schedule. The Dandenong Stingrays commence their 2015 TAC Cup season on Saturday 28 March against the Gippsland Power.
THE love of thrashing a remote controlled car inspired a group of enthusiasts to push their cars to the limit at the 24 Hours of Adrenalin event. Driving the hotted-up radio control cars around the 160m indoor circuit in Dandenong, nine teams from across Australia took on the challenge to see who could last the distance and burn the most rubber. From the first lap on Friday night all the way through to 8pm on Saturday night, the teams pushed the tiny vehicles to breaking point. While the teams battled fatigue and battery problems for hours at a time - a couple of cars knocked out of the running altogether - the turnheavy course proved a boon for ‘The A Team’, with the Mr T-less line-up putting down a whopping 4,762 laps to take the chequered flag. Team ‘Bob The Racer’ set a flying lap of 15.215 seconds,
but could not keep up the pace as The A Team emerged. The A Team rattled off 761 kilometres in their 24-hour victory - effectively the distance from Melbourne to Adelaide - to claim back-to-back titles and edge out Team Bob The Racer along with 27 others in the minor positions. Adrenalin Arena founder/ director Damian Andrews said the event - in its second year at the Dandenong-based venue - was created to challenge the Victorian RC community and test the limits of the cars and racers alike. “We just wanted to have a unique event, there’s only one other event like it in the world and that’s in Germany,” Andrews said. “We thought it would be a good challenge to go the distance… we organised it last year and got a reasonable turn out… this year we’ve had nearly double the entries.” Andrews said the big kids can’t get enough of remote controlled racing and admits
his passion returned later in life and encouraged anyone interested to pick up the controls and get down to the venue for some hot laps. “I played with it when I was a kid - in the early teens, then I grew up, and when I became older I discovered my inner youth and started mucking around with toy cars again, much to my wife’s displeasure. “We have kids come down as young as six and certainly have fathers and sons race as well, so it’s great family entertainment for people who want a bit of speed.” More information on Adrenalin Arena and RC racing in Dandenong can be found on their website www. adrenalin-area.com. Perera rescue fails By JARROD POTTER
By JARROD POTTER BLASTING past a whopping target, Dandenong (7/316) claimed its most emphatic win of the season after chasing down Casey-South Melbourne (313). It was a horror start for the visitors as Dan Watson (3/79) and Simon Black (1/44) extracted swing, bounce, and most importantly, the entire Dandenong top order early on Saturday. When David Alleyne (15 retired hurt) had to leave the game with a severely injured calf, the Panthers’ initiative had been completely derailed... except for one man. James Nanopoulos (140) stood tall when his team mates needed to rally around someone. The Panthers’ all-rounder - never before venturing over 72 in the 1st Grade - took it on his shoulders to guide his side home. With another Dandenong allrounder - James Pattinson (64) in tow, the duo added a century-stand to torment Casey captain Chris Hall (0/67) and his Swans. Pattinson would finally give back his wicket - as Lachie Sperling (3/68) spun his first wicket of the afternoon - and gave Casey-South Melbourne its last sniff of victory. Peter Siddle (14) and Peter Sweeney (7) would come and go leaving only Nanopoulos and the tail to get the remaining runs as the wind howled across Casey Fields. Nanopoulos stayed the course and secured his maiden Premier
century as he batted out another strong stand with debutant bowler Adam McMaster (29 not out). Dandenong captain Dan Doran didn’t bat on Saturday as he left it up to his younger quicks to bat out the final overs and secure the victory. McMaster would take the reins once Nanopoulos’ sterling innings ended, skittled by Watson, and with James Wilcock (12 not out) the duo earned the final 24 runs to give the Shepley Oval contingent its best win of the season. Dandenong moves into 14th on the Premier ladder and hosts Ringwood this round. WOMEN - Twenty20 Round 16 DANDENONG Lions (1/54) inflicted a severe mauling onto Melbourne (52), as the visitors to the den fell for a pittance. Superb bowling from Emma Gallagher (3/16) and Alana King (2/0) left Melbourne in a wreck as only one player mustered a doubledigit tally. The Lions’ batting response was just as brutal as the bowling. King (21 not out) and Erica Kershaw (16 not out) made sure the runs were earned rapidly to give Dandenong a boost from the Twenty20 onslaught. Dandenong sits third in the Twenty20 rankings, equal on points with Essendon Maribyrnong Park, but will need results to fall their way to make the final in a fortnight as Dandenong hosts Essendon Maribyrnong Park in a one-dayer on Saturday.
A match-winning century from James Nanopoulos guided Dandenong to a remarkable 313-run chase down of Casey-South Melbourne. 133906 Pictures: JARROD POTTER
NOT even a gutsy century from Issy Perera could guide Noble Park (233) to victory against Oakleigh (253). In a VSDCA grand-final rematch, the heavy lifting was left to a handful of the Bulls as the rest capitulated against Ben Pinwill (5/74). Continuing a scintillating season, Perera (103) notched his second hundred in 2014/15 to keep hope alive for the home side. His 2014/15 efforts so far - 467 runs at 51.9 - have kept Noble Park alive in a number of close calls and his services were required again on Saturday... and in greater amounts than usual. He couldn’t keep his partners at the other end, as Noble Park lost wickets in the crunch moments, and Perera also ran out of overs. Perera would raise his bat on the second ton in three rounds, but his mind was focused on the final 20 runs, which unfortunately would never come. Noble Park falls to eighth on the VSDCA ladder and now face Bayswater away. ENDEAVOUR HILLS v MALVERN THE young Eagles soared highest, but Endeavour Hills (240) also found itself just short of a sizeable target against Malvern (8/256). Zach Allen (48) - fresh off his Victorian Under-19s duties - started the innings emphatically as he struck towards another halfton. He would be brought undone, after a 78run opening stand with Thomas Hafil (27), as his pegs were sent flying. Ben Swift (54) was the next young Eagle to get his eye in and bludgeoned his third half-century of the season to keep the score ticking along. The last ditch efforts of Richard Saniga (26) and Vaughan Baxter (25) weren’t enough and the Eagles fell 16 short. Endeavour Hills is seventh and now take on wooden-spoon contenders Moorabbin.

DDCA Turf 1 - Round 9 (day 1) TWAS a mixed homecoming for Steve Spoljaric as he led Cranbourne away from perilous danger and towards victory in a matter of overs. PARKFIELD v CRANBOURNE RETURNING back to the club he captained to a flag less than 12 months ago, Cranbourne (99 and 0/42) skipper Steve Spoljaric made the trek back to Dunblane Reserve to take on his beloved Parkfield (47). Jordan Cleland (33) gutsily held on as the scalps fell around him, before he finally succumbed as Nilochana Perera (5/28) and Shane Bell (3/34). There wasn’t much to smile about for Cranbourne by the end of its 40-over knock, failing to crack the ton and looking down the barrel at another defeat. Spoljaric (6/26) and Cam Kelly (4/18) would bowl unchanged to run absolute riot with the ball against Parkfield - dismissing the home side for spare change. Matt Aslett (20) was the best of a woeful batting card as it only took 27 overs for Spoljaric and Kelly to dissect the Bears. From battling to stay afloat to 52 runs ahead on the first innings, Cranbourne’s second go fared a lot better as Cleland (22 not out) and Brayden Roscoe (14 not out) stuck at it to set up an interesting second day on Saturday. LYNDALE v SPRINGVALE SOUTH GRITTING its teeth and pushing towards the par score, Lyndale (170) have already started deliv-
ering headaches against finalsbound Springvale South (4/59). Charles Thurson (40) and Ricky Foulstone (22 not out) made their influences felt with the bat as Springvale South sprayed 28 extras. Yoshan Kumara (4/44) took four big scalps while Ruwantha Kellepotha (3/38) and Jarrod Armitage (2/48) finished the visitors off. The Bloods have lost four important wickets in pursuit as Jackson Sketcher (10 not out) and Harry Staude (4 not out) survived the last push on Saturday from Lyndale. DANDENONG WEST v NORTH DANDENONG IN a Dandy battle, the West (143) and North (2/34) are well-andtruly locked in for a nail biter. The Bulls struggled from the getgo as North Dandenong paved inroads with wicket after wicket. Anthony Brannan (48) dug in alongside Matt Collett (25) to prevent a complete collapse at the hands of Jurgen Andersen (5/38) as the home side struggled to build any tangible lead. Brannan’s gallant knock would soon come to completion with Jamie Brown (11 not out) unbeaten. The Northern response revolved around Dean Gunawardana (17 not out) as he saw off Peter Atkinson’s (2/10) six over onslaught approaching the day’s end. HALLAM KALORA PARK v COOMOORA COOMOORA continued letting sides off the hook as Hallam Kalora Park (6/265) wriggled from the net after the Booths put the boot in.
The Kangaroos hopped through the Hawks’ top order as Saliya Saman (1/21) and Joseph Hawke (1/57) kept the early going difficult for the home side. It would take Cory Booth (125) and Ben Hilliard (32) to begin the turnaround - as the duo notched 59 for the fourth wicket before Hilliard holed out. Enter Leigh Booth (70) who relished the ball coming onto the bat and making light work of the opposition’s best. The two Booths notched a 151-run partnership - the second 150-or-more stand for the Hawks in consecutive rounds - and demoralised the Kangaroos. Cory Booth raised the bat on his first significant score this season - his eighth DDCA century. The duo came unstuck but walked off to thunderous applause after the complete rescue. BUCKLEY RIDGES v MORDIALLOC BUCKLEY Ridges (1/12) was powerless to stop Mordialloc (290). Leon Kennedy (68) started the pillaging of the Ridges’ attack - which was gallantly held together by Lucas Hoogenboom (4/41) and Matt Goodwright (1/70). At 5/136 the match was in the balance, but the Bloodhounds sniffed out another 150 as Chathura Athukorala (56) added to the rain with a boundary-laden display at the postage stamp-sized Park Oval. The Bloodhounds’ allrounder - in league with Cameron Tomkinson (34) finished the job the top order started to give Mordialloc the best part of 300 to defend next week.

SPORT WNBL - Round 15
Penny’s from heaven By JARROD POTTER DANDENONG barely escaped the riptide as the West Coast Waves crashed through the Rangers’ defences in the first half. Dandenong secured its eighth win in a row after a nail-biting 87-80 win over West Coast on Saturday afternoon. With the ABC cameras pointed at Dandenong Basketball Stadium for the final time, Dandenong and West Coast made the broadcast a memorable one. West Coast thoroughly dominated the first term as Lindsey Moore (17 points) dropped three treys in a matter of minute to leap out to a 2-10 lead. The Rangers could not muster any significant three-point shooting of their own - hitting only 3/20 for the afternoon - and left the scoring to those who could crash through the
Waves’ defence. Penny Taylor (25 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists) would be the one to give a master class in paint point accumulation, as she barrelled through West Coast’s talls Darcee Garbin and Cassie Harberts to notch 10 points in the third term alone. Alongside the Opals’ champion was WNBA champion Cappie Pondexter (21 points, 8 rebounds) - the only Ranger to hit her straps from beyond the perimeter as she hit all three of Dandenong’s outside tally. Dandenong expanding their break to 63-50 at one stage, but the Waves found ways to stay in the clash. West Coast wouldn’t lie down and accept defeat without one last assault. Levelling the scores at 71-all by the half-way mark of the fourth quarter, West Coast’s Harberts (11 points, 12 rebounds) smashed into the Dandenong defence and put up
some important rebounds and points and gave Dandenong one last headache. Cooler heads would prevail as Taylor powered through, flicked off the assist to Tegan Cunningham (12 points, 5 rebounds) to take the lead before adding another two from the free throw line to calm the West Coast swell and eventually notch the seven-point victory. “It’s one of those days where things didn’t go to plan and we didn’t have the energy and yet still got 87 points and won,” Dandenong coach Mark Wright said. “We had to do it hard and had to eke out a win somehow, so luckily we’ve got Penny and Cappie there.” Dandenong has secured its third spot in the WNBL finals series and will start its run towards the post-season this weekend in an away match against the Melbourne Boomers.

Barksdale on the money
RACING FEVER
By JASON ADAMS THURSDAY evening at Sandown Park, and Barksdale recorded his first city win in emphatic style for Catani trainer Graeme Jose. Barksdale was explosive to begin from box seven and gained an early break on his rivals shortly after box rise. Despite a late charge from Dyna Chaser, Barksdale held on to his lead to win by one-and-ahalf lengths. “It was a good gutsy win as he was under a fair bit of pressure around the final bend - for the size of the dog he’s got some really good pace,” Jose said. Barksdale’s won at odds of $14.40, an unsavoury result for favourite punters however not for Jose. “Judging by his run last week I thought to myself, he ran the second fastest out of all the heats he is certainly an each-way chance.” “I don’t bet too often, but when I saw he was $18 fixed odds…I couldn’t resist having something on.” Although Barksdale stopped the clock at a slick 29.60 in what was just his 12th career start, Jose believes we are yet to see the best of his exciting chaser. “I really think he’s got some im-

Off like a spark, Barksdale stormed home from box seven to take out its first win on a metropolitan track. 133904 Picture: SUPPLIED provement in him to be honest, with a clear run I think he can take that next step.” Owned by New South Welshman Peter Jovanic, Jose acquired Barksdale from one of the most highly regarded trainers in the country, Kel Greenough.
“Kel couldn’t fit in him his kennel, as a result he and Peter were nice enough to give the greyhound to me.” Jose is no stranger to the sport of greyhound racing, having won multiple features over the years including the 2009 Sandown Cup with superstar chaser Manta Lad.
SPORTINGBET Park, Sandown will stage the annual Greater Dandenong Race Day over the Hillside track on Saturday, February 7 and a super meeting is in store. The meeting will feature two rich events for two-year-olds plus the final of the Swettenham Stud Summer Championship. The $250,000 R. L. Inglis Premier (1000 metres) is restricted to twoyear-olds nominated for the Inglis Race Series that were offered at the 2014 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale. There is an added Super Vobis nominators’ bonus of $7000 and an owner’s bonus of $23,000. Aa a set weight event it is certainly worth winning and will attract a strong field. The $150,750 Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes (1000 metres) also carries a Super Vobis nominators’ bonus of $10,000. The race is a set weight event for two-year-olds with penalties for the winners of certain races.
To add to that there is the $80,000 Super Vobis Three-Year-Old Plate (1300 metres) which will have an added nominators’ bonus of $7000 and an owner’s bonus of $23,000. A great deal of interest will centre on the $100,000 Swettenham Stud Summer Championship Final (1600 metres). The Championship comprises 10 heats and one final with points of 10 for each heat winner going through to two points for eighth and one point for the remainder of runners. All heat winners are exempt from the ballot in the final. Excess horses will be decided by the points earned. The Lexus ES 350 has a signature spindle grille fronting up a sleek, almost coupe, body.
Lexus shows its new look By EWAN KENNEDY THE latest Lexus, the ES 350, has the now familiar spindle grille, a bold shape that’s unmistakable thanks to its sheer size. Flanking this grille are halogen projector-style headlamps incorporating L-shaped LED daytime running lights. (The L-shape represents L for Lexus, though you do have to use a bit of imagination to see this). LEDs are also used in the rear lights. The new ES series is referred to as a four-door sedan but has a sleek shape that almost puts it into the four-door coupe class. The shape isn’t just about style, the co-efficient of drag of drag (Cd) is an impressively good 0.27. Sports Luxury occupants can settle into ventilated front seats, with 10-way power adjustment. Climate control is spread over three zones. The rear seats are heated. Unwanted glare and heat can be warded off by rear side sunshades. We loved the dashboard styling with its wide tapered ends. This is almost a full five-seater, there’s no skimping on seating space, with even the centre spot in the back being reasonably wide and comfortable. There’s Bluetooth telephone and audio streaming and digital radio. A Mark Levinson audio system has been designed specifically for Lexus. It powers no fewer than 15 speakers and sounds brilliant no matter what your choice of entertainment. Thankfully the Lexus remote Touch Controller has been improved to provide more resistance so it no longer shoots all over the screen although we still prefer just about everyone else’s controllers. The Lexus ES 350 is powered by a 3.5-litre V6 engine producing maximum power of 204 kW and peak torque of 346 Nm. A six-speed automatic transmission drives the ES through the front wheels. The driver’s mood lets them select from the

Lexus drive mode system. Controlled through a knob on the centre console it offers normal, sport or eco vehicle performance. Standard safety features in all Lexus ES variants include 10 airbags; ABS brakes; stability and traction control; pedestrian protection system; tyre pressure warning; blind spot monitor; hill-start assist; and reversing camera and parking sensors. Active safety in the Sports Luxury uses a precollision system that beeps and flashes if it senses a crash appears imminent. Emergency braking is also applied. Active cruise control keeps the ES Sports Luxury at a given time (not distance) from a vehicle in front. The first impression in settling into the new Lexus ES is quality. The front seats are spacious, and are supportive without being overly soft. There’s good rear legroom and headroom back there is fine for anyone under about 1.9 metres. Comfort is high on the list and the midsize Lexus has the ability to iron out almost all that Australian roads toss under it. It’s perhaps not quite in the Commodore and Falcon class in the bush, but doesn’t miss by much. In what has always been the Lexus way the ES series is near silent in its running with the engine being well damped and the thick glass and multiinsulation body areas keeping noise, vibration and harshness well outside. Lexus ES has few sporting pretensions and is aimed squarely at those who want luxurious cruising and commuting rather than driving excitement. Steering is too light for our tastes but the car does react fast enough to please even keen drivers. Handling is competent and there’s always the feeling the car, assisted by electronic aids if you push too hard, will be mindful of your safety. Expect to use about 10 to 12 litres per 100 kilometres during the daily commute grind, dropping to seven to nine litres on open country roads and motorways.
