Phil Heading, Marquita Telford, Elissa Jans and Will Zhang are ready for National Red Balloon Day. 133993 wouldn’t be able to do what they do, so this is my way of literally saying ‘thankyou’.” Olinda Rural Fire Brigade Secretary, Elissa Jans, told the Mail that events such as NRBD were heartening for firefighters like those in the Olinda brigade, who are all volunteers from the community. “We’re all volunteers, 100 per cent of us,” Ms Jans said. “Firefighters don’t seek recognition, but it’s nice to have the support of the

community, and I’m sure that we all do have the support of the community. “Days like this, it’s a celebration of what people in the community can do.” Ms Jans said the group had a long wish-list of items they were currently raising money for, including for new security systems in the wake of breakins at CFA stations across the state, including in Dixons Creek. “We continually need new operational equipment, and fund-raising is the only way to do it,” she said.

“Our community knows that CFA brigades rely on donations - the CFA contributes, but there is a large part that is self-funded.” Other items on the list include portable lighting, for when members attend late-night incidents, as well as funding for the brigade’s bi-annual newsletter. Last year’s fund-raiser resulted in a donation of $400 to the Olinda brigade, and Ms Telford said she hoped visitors, tourists and residents alike would come out to support

FIREFIGHTERS in the hills are being thanked for their heroic efforts in a special event later this month, and residents are being encouraged to get involved, donate money and put out a red balloon. The Olinda Rural Fire Brigade will be teaming up with the Olinda Primary School and local trader The Real Thing Craft Centre on 28 February for a National Red Balloon Day (NRBD) event. A sausage sizzle will be held out the front of the store, which is located on Olinda-Monbulk Road, and NRBD merchandise will be on sale, with all profits going back to the brigade. Red Balloon Day was created by Bendigo’s Jody Hardiman to thank firefighters around Australia for their work protecting their communities and residents throughout the year. The idea behind the day is simple - to fly a red balloon from letterboxes, fences, businesses, or a ribbon on a car on the last day of summer, to let firefighters know they are appreciated. Balloons sold through the NRBD website sum up the sentiment of the day with slogans printed on bumper stickers and the namesake red balloons – “thankyou fireys.” The website also encourages people to put on fund-raising events in their area, or to donate money to fire services generally in their states. Real Thing owner Marquita Telford said she sold merchandise for NRBD on the occasion last year, but was inspired to do something bigger after being involved in a car crash last year. “I was in quite a horrific accident late last year,” Ms Telford said. “I’m fine, I had a broken rib, but there was nothing nicer than seeing some members of the Olinda CFA coming to my rescue, having a group of people willing to put themselves out there to help other people. “They’re just amazing people and they need to be thanked – I personally

First lessons at school are cool

Weigh in on fruit and veg for health By JESSE GRAHAM

By PETER DOUGLAS BELGRAVE Heights Christian School has hit the new school year running, with the yards abuzz with the sounds of eager students. An incredible 33 Preps have started their academic life at the school, joining the more than 100 students. School principal, Andy Callow, said the new students were all settling in well, with the Year 7s in particular enjoying use of the new middleschool complex. “The Preps’ first day was fantastic, with lots of smiles and happy people,” the principal said. “There were no tears from Preps, parents or even the teachers.” Meanwhile, the new term is also a first for 2500 Victorian teaching graduates, who are starting their careers as qualified teachers. Minister for Education, James Merlino, recently congratulated many who had taken the first step towards a teaching career. “Our newest teachers are embarking on a truly rewarding profession - helping our children learn, opening their eyes to our world and everything in it,” Mr Merlino said.

YARRA Ranges residents are being encouraged to eat more fruit and vegetables in the lead-up to Healthy Weight Week this month, with an information session to be held in Yarra Junction. Eastern Health dietician Jackie O’Connor said people in the Yarra Ranges and around the country were not getting the daily recommended two pieces of fruit and five serves of vegetables. “It’s definitely around this area and around the whole of Australia, people do struggle to get their two fruit and five veg - and we’re trying to promote a simple strategy to help people achieve that,” she said. Those strategies will be outlined in an event organised by Eastern Health outside Yarra Junction Shopping Centre from 10am to 2pm on Monday 23 February. Ms O’Connor said that two pieces of fruit and either two and a half measurement cups of vegetables or five cups of salad is recommended for each person to eat every day. She said having enough fruit and vegetables assisted bowel health, helped to prevent bowel disease, ensured that enough vitamins, minerals and nutrients were coming in and helped people to avoid becoming overweight. “They are foods that are not very energy-dense, so we can consume them and fill up without gaining as much weight as if we’re eating other food groups,” Ms O’Connor said.

Jackie O'Connor said people need to make sure they eat enough fruit and vegetables. 134090 Picture: ROB CAREW “With non-starchy food, you can’t really have too much, but with fruit, you can have too much - even though it has natural sugars, they have sugar in them and eating too much can lead to weight-gain.” A simple goal for people trying to get enough servings was to ensure that every meal had a serve of either fruit or vegetables. Ms O’Connor said whether it was adding fruit to breakfast, having a salad or vegetable snacks with lunch and plenty of salad or vegetables with dinner, there were a range of practical ways to have enough greens. Eastern Health dieticians will be at the event at Yarra Junction Shopping Centre to provide information about healthy eating and setting achievable food goals. Healthy Weight Week runs from 16-22 February. For more information on the event, call 1300 130 381.

Green Army is on track By JESSE GRAHAM THE GREEN Army has marched on through the hills, working to spruce up areas of the Sassafras Creek Forest Trail and bring a damaged footbridge back to life. The Green Army workers spent last week working at the Emerald end of the 13-kilometre trail, removing weeds, pruning the track and reinstating an old footbridge. Group leader Martin Forster said the eight Green Army workers had been working in conjunction with Parks Victoria and landcare groups to improve the track. Using equipment supplied by Parks Victoria, the team has been brush-cutting, removing sycamore weeds and replacing rotten

boards on a 30- metre footbridge. “We’re ripping up all of the rotten boards, putting down new ones and putting down wires so it’s gripping and you don’t fall over,” Mr Forster said. Johns Hill Landcare Group member Karen Alexander said the Green Army had supplemented the work of local group Meander, which specifically cared for the Menzies Creek and Emerald Tourist Track, and thanked the group for its efforts. “This group is a great group, a really wonderful bunch of young people - they’re interested, they seem to work hard and we’re really pleased they can be there,” Ms Alexander said. She said that sycamores were important to be removed along

the trail regularly, as they could take over areas if left unchecked. The Green Army project was established after the Federal Government made its establishment one of their election commitments. The group began working in the Dandenong Ranges after being launched by La Trobe MP Jason Wood and Environment Minister Greg Hunt in October last year. Working with the Community Weed Alliance of the Dandenongs (CWAD), the Green Army erected 120 metres of fencing at Belgrave Lake Park last month to protect sensitive platypus habitat. For more information on the project, visit www.environment. gov.au/land/green-army.

Briefly Erratic driver nabbed BELGRAVE police have arrested a 20-year-old Cockatoo man after numerous dangerous driving incidents were reported through the Dandenongs earlier this month. At 6.40am on Sunday 1 February, a blue fourwheel drive was travelling north on Monbulk Road from Belgrave and overtook a car on a bend near Micawber Tavern. A car coming the opposite way down the road swerved to avoid the overtaking car, but had its side smashed by the four wheel drive. Belgrave police Sergeant Craig West said the side of the car was “slaughtered” by the sideswipe and the driver continued up the road without stopping. Reports then came in over the morning of the same car driving erratically through Silvan and Macclesfield, and in one instance, a jogger was nearly run over by the car on Mountain Road in Cockatoo. The car was discovered burnt out in Tonimbuk, near Gembrook, later in the day, and a 20-year-old Cockatoo man was arrested in relation to the offences. Sgt West said that inquiries were still pending and no formal charges had been laid. Anyone with information, or who may have witnessed the car driving erratically, is asked to contact Belgrave police on 9754 6677.

Driver, cyclist in fisticuffs OLINDA police are searching for information after a driver and a cyclist got into a fight on Sunday afternoon in Ferny Creek. Leading Senior Constable Andrew Allen said that at 5.15pm on Sunday 8 February, a cyclist and a driver of a ute - both of whom were men had a confrontation at the intersection of Mount Dandenong Tourist and Sherbrook roads in Ferny Creek. Leading Sen Const Allen said the dispute was around whether the cyclist was “holding up traffic” and the two got into a fight. As a result, the cyclist sustained a neck injury. Anyone with information is asked to call Leading Sen Const Allen at Olinda police on 9751 1241.

Money skimmed from accounts

By JESSE GRAHAM

MONBULK police are asking residents to be wary of ATM security after money was skimmed from bank accounts in Monbulk over the weekend. Between 11.30pm on Friday 6 and 1am on Saturday 7 February, money was withdrawn from numerous bank accounts at an ATM on Main Road, Monbulk. Monbulk police Senior Constable, Peter Edyvane, said it was believed the money was taken using a skimming device on the machine. Sen Const Edyvane said police would like to hear from anyone who might have seen suspicious behaviour near any ATMs between those times. He said people using ATMs needed to be security conscious, look out for abnormalities on machines and to keep the keypad covered when entering in their PIN. Anyone with information on the money skimming is asked to contact Monbulk police station on 9756 6266.

Stolen shipping container recovered A SHIPPING container stolen from a building site over Christmas has been recovered by police after it was sold on eBay to an unwitting Seville resident. Police recovered the shipping container from a Seville property on Friday 6 February. Monbulk police Senior Constable Peter Edyvane said the container was stolen from a Heidelberg building site over the Christmas period and sold through the online auction site, eBay. He said the Seville resident purchased the container in good faith, and that police were investigating and attempting to track down the thief. Sen Const Edyvane said people purchasing goods online must make sure they were getting the real deal. “Anybody making those types of purchases needs to be 100 per cent sure of what they’re doing,” he said.

THE Victorian Government is urging residents in the Yarra Ranges and surrounds to be wary of travelling conmen offering unsolicited work, with a number of dodgy tradesworkers being reported. Minister for Consumer Affairs Jane Garrett said summer was the peak time for scammers, who bully or pressure homeowners into handing over cash for sub-standard or incomplete work, to visit homes. Consumer Law Victoria and the Yarra Ranges Council both posted online warnings last week, after reports came in of conmen in Mount Evelyn and Montrose offering work on bitumen and driveways. The council’s Facebook post stated that the person was claiming to be a representative of council, and that this was not the case.

“If you are approached, please report it to us by calling 1300 368 333 or private messaging,” the post read. The government’s Stop Travelling Conmen website amalgamates reports of dodgy tradesworkers, and lists four incidents in 2014 in the Dandenong Ranges and surrounds - in Emerald, Monbulk, Ferntree Gully and Lilydale. One incident has been recorded in Coldstream this year so far. Ms Garrett said residents should report tradesworkers who didn’t seem legitimate, or who were making unsolicited offers for cash-only or todayonly ‘specials’. “Never pay cash up-front for a promised job - people have the law on their side when they refuse demands,” she said. Consumer Affairs Victoria lists a number of tips for people to avoid getting stung

by travelling conmen. For example, the website asks residents to be suspicious of tradesworkers who knock on doors unexpectedly, offering to paint the house, work on gardens, resurface driveways or fix roofs; offer cheap deals using words like ‘for today only’; ask for cash upfront; pressure homeowners to accept their offer; or say they can do the job immediately, because another job has been cancelled. Residents are asked to not answer, or to ask the visitors to leave - if they refuse, they are breaking the law - and to take down as much information as possible, such as names and vehicle registration. Travelling conmen can be reported to 1300 133 408 between 8.30am-5pm Monday to Friday or to local police stations. For more information, visit www.stoptravellingconmen. org.

Railway historian charge By JESSE GRAHAM FORMER Puffing Billy volunteer Robert Whitehead will face court in April to answer child sexual abuse charges. Mr Whitehead, 83, faced Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Friday 6 February and had his case adjourned until 17 April.

A former railway historian and Puffing Billy Railway volunteer, Whitehead has been charged with 20 counts of indecent assault and one count of false imprisonment, dating back to the 1960s and 1970s. Whitehead was arrested on 12 January, and was charged with an additional 10 counts of indecent assault and two counts

of sexual penetration of a minor aged 10 to 16 on 28 January. He will be out on bail until the April hearing. Puffing Billy CEO John Robinson told the Mail earlier in the year that the organisation knew nothing of the charges against Mr Whitehead, and had not had contact with him for over 25 years. 1171929-FA07-15

Good news for baby Blues FOUR blue-tongued lizard babies were rescued from their dying mother after being rushed to the Healesville Sanctuary last week. The mother lizard was brought to the sanctuary’s Wildlife Health Centre on Tuesday 3 February after she was attacked in Christmas Hills. Veterinarians at the sanctuary began emergency surgery, but the lizard died while under anaesthetic. However, after the vets conducted an X-ray of the mother, they realised she was pregnant with 13 babies, which were removed via C-section. The four lizards (pictured) woke up quickly after the operation, though their nine siblings are not expected to survive. Blue-tongued lizards are independent from birth, and the babies will be released shortly, once their health is confirmed. 134164 Picture: JESSE GRAHAM

Man dead in horrific crash By JESSE GRAHAM POLICE are investigating the circumstances of a horrific crash in Mount Evelyn on Friday 6 February that claimed the life of a 53-year-old Wandin North man. The crash occurred at 2.10pm, when the man’s car, a wagon, hit a tree on the side of Monbulk Road in Mount Evelyn and burst into flames. The driver, a father of three, died at the scene. Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol Sergeant Simon Coverley told the Mail yesterday (Monday 9 February) that police were still investigating the circumstances of the crash. He said there were no skid marks on the road to indicate that the driver had applied brakes before the car hit the tree. “We’re trying to investigate why he’s left the road - there appears to be no braking,“ he said. “Speed does appear to be a factor at this stage.“ A Victoria Police statement on Saturday 7 February said investigators believed the driver may have attempted to overtake another vehicle before losing control and hitting the tree. “That’s still a possibility,” Sgt Coverley said. The flames from the crash also ignited nearby trees and scrub, and about seven CFA trucks rushed to the scene to douse the flames. Sgt Coverley said it was uncommon for car crashes to cause fires like the one that occurred on Friday, and that police would continue to investigate the matter.

Truck mishap: road closed By JESSE GRAHAM and KATH GANNAWAY

The car burst into flames after hitting a tree. He said that it was still unknown if a medical issue or alcohol were involved. Monbulk Road was closed off from the time of the accident until late in the evening, as police officers analysed the scene. No other vehicles are believed to be part of the crash. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who has more information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or to submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic. com.au.

INVERNESS Road in Mount Evelyn was closed for several hours on Friday morning, after a Yarra Ranges Council contractor rolled his truck off the road. The truck driver was travelling up the road at 7am on Friday 6 February in a convoy towards Olinda with a viscose product for road sealing in the rear of the truck. When the truck swerved to the side to avoid a car on the narrow road, which becomes one lane wide in some areas, it hit a ditch and rolled, spilling its contents. The driver, a Geelong man in his twenties, was taken to Maroondah Hospital with minor head injuries, and a large-scale, clean-up operation ran through the morning.

A Yarra Ranges Council spokesperson said the road was expected to be slippery for days to come, due to the product being spilt on the road. Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol Leading Senior Constable Chad Bullock said the drivers were directed up the road by their GPS devices, but did not know the conditions of the road. “It’s not a good shortcut,” Leading Sen Const Bullock said. “They shouldn’t have been on that road - it’s a convergence of circumstances.” The road provides a quicker route between Mount Evelyn and Olinda than travelling via Swansea Road and the Mount Dandenong Tourist Road, but is unsuitable for trucks and large vehicles. The road was re-opened later in the day.

Ambo stand-off to end

Thanks so much I WOULD like to give special thanks to the professional support of Gary Lucas and Stuart Aldridge in real estate, Martine and Wilma from the banking sector, and local businesses such as Healesville Toyota for going above and beyond in their services. Their support has never made me prouder to live in the Healesville community. Carmel Maile, Healesville.

By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM TECOMA’S controversial new ambulance station is set to start construction despite the ongoing protests of residents. Situated in quiet Rocksleigh Avenue, Tecoma, Ambulance Victoria bought the former residential property over a year ago and recently demolished the existing building. The planning process for the station was made particularly contentious due to a planning loop-hole which nullifies the concerns of residents. Rocksleigh Avenue homeowner Carol Allen says that the issues of residents have been largely ignored. Her biggest concern is regarding the residential nature of the street. “This is an area that was not intended for a commercial business. There is no footpath and no lighting on the street, making it completely inappropriate for this purpose. “The street was never designed to accommodate traffic and that’s because it has never needed to. It services only a few homes.” The group of vocal residents have exhausted many avenues of appeal to try to stop the construction of the station, including a letter sent on 20 December last year to Victorian Minister for Health Jill Hennessy. The residents cited multiple issues making the site of the station inappropriate, a recurring concern being the inappropriate dimensions and location of the property. “The residents welcome a major upgrade of an Ambulance Depot, but the residents are not at all satisfied with the choice of location. “We hold that the positioning of the depot and the site chosen will not improve the service to hills’ residents and due to its location - having only one

Ambulance Victoria regional manager Cath Anderson said the organisation

had held consultations but were told they did not need council approval. “Late in the planning process, after we sought a decision from the Yarra Ranges Council on our application, the council informed Ambulance Victoria that the proposed branch does not require a planning permit, as it is exempt from the requirements of the Yarra Ranges Planning Scheme,” Ms Anderson said.

She said the building should be in operation by the end of the year. “We engaged with the local community and council as part of the planning and consultation process and made amendments to the building design based on the feedback we received. “Ambulance Victoria paramedics expect to be operating from the new Belgrave branch by the end of 2015.”

JIMMY Merlino has always been known as a religious man in State Parliament but it appears that he may now be softening his views. Jimmy marched very proudly in the annual gay pride parade on Sunday. Do not underestimate little Jimmy, as this was a display of genuine courage from a devout Catholic who relies very heavily on that significant voting block. I hope that Jimmy will now speak publicly to his electorate, through this publication, about his new-found maturity and willingness to do what he believes is right. Jimmy, I also now expect to see a new 30-metre high statue of the great Charles Darwin erected in the Yarra Ranges, so your beloved constituents can all worship the greatest thinker to ever walk on this planet. Well done, Jimmy. Sean Gothe, Belgrave.

Hills in fire education mode By KATH GANNAWAY BRIGADES across the Yarra Ranges are in education mode. Information nights aimed at keeping residents up to date with everything from fire danger ratings and fire restriction periods to keeping their properties and themselves prepared for the fire season (that’s not over yet), have been held over the past three months. Some common themes cropped up when the Mail spoke with Upper Ferntree Gully CFA captain Peter Smith, Healesville captain Graeme Bates, and Gruyere captain Matt Sartori - but there were also some marked differences. The role of education and getting out into the community is something that all brigades have been focusing on for a number of years, and with mixed results. Capt Smith said the UFTG brigade had had a number of information sessions, both in their immediate area, and in Lysterfield which dealt more with the situation of ember attack from fires in the hills. He said there was a tendency for people to be blase about bushfire and said some of the questions, and the attitude of people was frustrating. When it comes to delivering the message, he says nice is not working, and it’s time to be blunt ... by putting a bit sharper point on what is required of residents and their obligation to take responsibility. “Sometimes, you feel they want us to lead them, and it’s not going to happen,” he said.

Information is critical to an effective bushfire response. 134166 “They ask when do we have to go, but we can’t tell people that, it’s a call they have to make. “They say ‘you’re telling us to leave early - where are we going to go’. It’s very frustrating when they say ‘can’t you come and tell us’. “We’ve got 3500 houses in Upper Ferntree Gully, and four trucks; four into 3500 doesn’t go all that well.” He says it’s time for some straight talking. “We’re all in the same boat. Wherever there’s a blade of grass, a tree, leaves or mulch, and we all have one of

those things surrounding us, there’s the potential for them to burn. “If you want to live up here, you have to make sure you are prepared to put in the work.” In the smaller Gruyere community, Capt Sartori said they had had a great response. But he points out that Gruyere is a much smaller, rural community. They ran three information sessions in a row last week in different areas of their patch. “It’s all part of that education and

when they come to meetings they can get informed,” he said. “We’re here to educate, not just to fight fires. If people need to know about something, we can educate them on that,” he said. There’s good evidence that the message delivered over the years has been taken up. Capt Sartori said the brigade had not gone to one illegal burn all year. “We ask them not to light fires, they don’t light fires,” he said. Capt Bates said their meeting, on a

Saturday morning, attracted fewer than 30 people - and they were probably the ones who were most prepared, and prepared to learn more about how to be ore fire ready. “The people who should be coming, aren’t coming,” he said. “People have got a bit lax and laidback because of the cooler weather, which has given a false sense of security. “We’ve had people starting to light fires and phone calls asking about whether they can light a fire when we would normally never have those calls at this time of year. “Because we’ve had a few weeks of colder weather they are thinking maybe the fire restrictions have been lifted; and it’s not the case.” On education, Capt Bates says it’s definitely a higher focus than ever before. That means brigade volunteers are doing more of the heavy lifting when it comes to taking the message out to the masses. “We find we have to go to the people, not relying on the people to come to us,” he said. Attending local events, Facebook and targeting areas for property service advice and inspections is all part of the direct marketing plan. “We don’t want to fire-fight, so we’re working harder on the prevention,” he said. With a 10-day hot spell about to descend on the hills, and the valley, all the brigades will be hoping that residents take the lead, stay informed, stay connected and have a genuine plan.

Bloomin’ mar vellous By JESSE GRAHAM TWO DANDENONG Ranges gardens will be opening their gates to the public this weekend, with never-before-seen treasures on display for the annual Open Gardens season. John Rayner’s Brookdale Farm in Emerald and Emily and Simon Mildren’s The Old Bakehouse in Macclesfield will be open to the public on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 February. The opening is part of Australia’s Open Garden Scheme, where residents with interesting, immersive and incredible gardens open their gates to the public to enjoy the scenery. Ms Mildren said The Old Bakehouse featured plenty of perennial species in the front gardens, a walk through five acres of natural bushland, an

orchard and beehives, with antique and vintage items nestled throughout. She said the weekend would be the perfect time to visit, with many flowers starting to bloom in the warmer weather of the past week. After taking part eight years ago, Mr Rayner said this year would be the second time he opened his doors for the Open Gardens, with plenty of new sights and surprises for visitors. “I work in horticultural teaching and research, so this is a bit of a lab for me to try out different plants and see how they perform over time,” he said. “There’s quite a lot of plants there, a lot of flowers, grasses and succulents - there’re fruit trees, a large, walkable spiral of big grass and several hun-

dred sunflowers planted on the fence-line.” But plants won’t be the only attraction to the gardens, with Brookdale Farm featuring a coffee cart and The Old Bakehouse having plants for sale on the day, as well as a sausage sizzle. Both gardens’ owners will be donating profits from the day - Mr and Ms Mildren are supporting the Macclesfield CFA, while Mr Rayner will be donating to Global Gardens of Peace, which helps to set up gardens for children in dangerous or war-torn countries around the world. Both gardens will be open from 10am to 4.30pm on 14 and 15 February. Entry is $8, with children younger than 18 admitted free. For more information, visit www.opengarden.org.au

New Paige in art turned over By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM IN HER art, Paige Moisis finds inspiration close to home. The 18-year-old Upwey resident had her Year 12 Studio Art folio selected for the 2015 VCE Creative Showcase, an exhibition of the best work from last year’s graduating class. The setting for her series of award-winning photographs is Belgrave’s Cameo Cinema, where she has worked for the past three years. “The series of photographs I captured in cinema are generally based on capturing atmosphere, time and place. I concentrated on creating images that make the viewer feel part of the moment.” Paige completed her VCE last year at Upwey High School, where she chose studio art as a subject. A challenging subject with a big workload, Paige’s passion shone through in her final piece. She says a major influence in her art is her Mum, who is an art teacher and always encourages her to “look outside the square” when taking photographs. She first chose photography as a Year 9 elective and never looked back.

“I distinctly remember the first time I worked in the darkroom to process film, I was instantly hooked and fascinated by the process of developing an image.” Paige is excited for what this year will bring, and plans to travel to broaden her photography portfolio. “I’d love to build on my photography overseas, exploring different cultures and

Toying with forest of fun By KATH GANNAWAY IT’S EVERY child’s fantasy ... an entire forest of toys. And, possibly every parent’s fantasy ... how to create something beautiful out of that mountain of plastic toys that have taken over the house. Throughout February Yarra Ranges residents have the opportunity to take part in a playful and colourful art experience - the creation of a faux forest made entirely of discarded and broken toys. The first of five workshops with artist Rachael Hallinan was held at Montrose Library on Saturday

and future workshops will be held at Belgrave, Yarra Junction and CERES in Brunswick. The Ersatz Fantasia Project is all about fun ... but it’s not about mindless fun. There are some thoughtprovoking messages for consumers of all ages. Rachel said the project aimed to be a fun and engaging way of encouraging people to take notice of the overuse of plastic in their lives. “It is a reminder to consider materials when purchasing gifts and toys, to recycle and repurpose and to consider using environmentally friendly

alternatives to buying, such as borrowing from toy libraries,” Rachel said. The Ersatz Fantasia Project will exhibit at the Yarra Ranges Museum in Lilydale from 28 March to 24 May. Workshops are at Belgrave Library on Saturday 14 February from 10.30am to 12.30pm (9754 7266); CERES Community Environment Park in Brunswick, Sunday 15 February from 10.30am to 3.30pm (9389 0100); and at Yarra Valley ECOSS in Wesburn on Saturday 28 February and Sunday 15 March from 10.30am to 3.30pm (5967 2416).

Quite truthful - in theory The Theory of Everything (PG) Starring: Eddie Redmayne, Felicity Jones, Charlie Cox, David Thewliss THE Theory of Everything pulls hard on your heartstrings, but has a degree of dishonesty as a biopic and does a disservice to its subject’s wife. The film is a retelling of the life of famous cosmologist and science writer Stephen Hawking, with strong focus on his marriage to his first wife Jane Wilde. On its own, The Theory of Everything is a poignant, profoundly moving character study. Hawking’s genius, fame, rela-

tionships and disability are all addressed without any one attribute defining him. The tragic progression of Hawking’s motor-neurone disease (including its burden on Jane) generates some heartwrenching moments, and his dignified perseverance is uplifting to watch. Eddie Redmayne is a revelation as the lead - so convincing that even the real Hawking reportedly thought he was watching himself at points - and Felicity Jones is mesmerising dainty but strong and wise - as Jane Wilde. But The Theory of Every-

thing stands up poorly to the full truth. The film necessarily condenses certain events for pacing and simplifies the science, but it badly obfuscates Hawking’s views on religion, and its rosetinted view of the man largely glosses over his fame-worsened arrogance and infidelity. These, far more than his disability, were the main reasons for his and Jane’s divorce. The Theory of Everything is overall a fine movie, but if you want a more accurate biopic, watch The Imitation Game. - Seth Hynes

Set in a magnificent landscape, Little Yarra Steiner School is a great place to learn. 134192

Composite education across years LITTLE Yarra Steiner School offers a rich and wholesome education, catering to the needs appropriate to the developing child and adolescent. A school for students from Kindergarten through to VCE Class 12, Little Yarra Steiner School provides a rich, play-based programme in the Kinder and Prep years, and a cohesive development through the primary years of schooling. As students move into secondary school, Little Yarra Steiner School students continue in the strong music programme, as well as an outdoor camping programme as part of a balanced schooling that values classical liberal education inclusive of history, mathematics, the sciences, literature and drama.

Little Yarra is one of 1000 Steiner schools worldwide, each independent and arising from common principles underpinning education. These values are based on the work of Rudolf Steiner and focus on the developmental needs particular to each age. It addresses the education of the whole child - head, heart and hands. The PE and movement programme includes eurythmy, unique to Steiner schools, which together develops a graceful and healthy body. Eurythmy is an expressive movement art originated in the early 20th century and used in education. The school also offers a unique opportunity for Class 12s to undertake an independent project in addition to their VCE.

The school’s teachers range from new and enthusiastic to having over 30 years’ experience, each with expertise in their respective areas. Teachers are warm and caring and highly respected by students and parents alike. The school now runs four buses for its students: Warburton East, Healesville, Belgrave, and Mount Evelyn. Each route includes several pick-up points. Little Yarra Steiner School is located at 205 Little Yarra Road, Yarra Junction. Scholarships for young leaders MATER Christi College Belgrave is committed to developing informed, compassionate and creative young women who will contribute to building a better world. As part of that commitment, the college provides diverse opportunities to nurture and celebrate the ‘can-do’ leadership energy of girls, which in turn inspires students and staff alike. “From their first day in a girls school, students witness other girls as leaders; as captain of the sports team, SRC leader, physics high achiever, drummer in the rock band or as the lead role in the school production. When girls consistently witness other girls as role models in all areas, they realise there is no limit to what they can do,“ said principal Mary FitzGerald. The college wants to make it possible for more girls to benefit from the leadership opportunities offered by a girls education and is offering Emerging Leaders Scholarships to students entering Year 7. The scholarships provide substantial support to families seeking a Mater Christi education. WHAT a great week of athletics for the Yarra Ranges Athletics club. Two weekends ago several club athletes competed in the state Little Athletics multievent championships held in Moe. All the club’s athletes performed to their very best with personal bests in many of the events in the competition. Standout results were Kiara Flavel winning the girls under-9 competition and Georgia Laven finishing third in the girls under-12 competition. Other results were Maddie Laven 10th in the girls under-10, Zac Clarke 16th in the boys under-10, Alex Van Duuren placing 50th in the boys under-10, Camden Hewitson 17th in the boys under-12 and Harrison Van Duuren 10th in the boys under-13. This weekend saw a return to Saturday morning Little Athletics. Probably a good thing with the warm weather experienced over the weekend. All the athletes made the most of the cooler conditions to record some excellent per-

With region track and field championships only a couple of weeks away it is great to see so many athletes enjoying the competition and achieving some very good results. Round two of the AV knockout competition was held on Saturday at Lakeside Stadium. Yarra Ranges Athletics members took the opportunity to race under championship conditions. Some good results were achieved in the hot and blustery conditions. Standout performances

were from Dale Bullen in the open men javelin, discus and shot put events. Others to compete were Lucas Taylor, Harrison Van Duuren, James Laven, Maddie Lum, Aiden Pace and Lee Taylor. Next weekend is the Victorian Junior Track and Field Championships, to be held at Lakeside Stadium. The club has 18 athletes competing for a state title and an opportunity to compete at the Australian Championships in early March. Good luck to all athletes, watch this space for results next week. The club’s Little Athletes continue preparations for the region track and field championships with a “choose your event day” next Saturday morning from 8.30am. Put 28 April in the diary - a family fun night will be held at Morrison Reserve, a night of games, competitions, a few races and a jumping castle. Bring your friends, neighbours and family. New members of all ages and abilities are always welcome. Visit the website www. yarrarangesathletics.org.au for more information, results and training times.

Bowlers wreak havoc By STEVE BROWN FTGDCA REEVES Shield teams at the lower end of the table delivered some knock out blows to cause havoc among teams with finals aspirations at the completion of round 11 in the FTGDCA. Not one team batting at the weekend scored 200 on a 35 degree day. Bottom side Ferntree Gully, with 212 on the scoreboard, proved too many for finals contender Johnson Park, dismissed for 187, thanks to some brilliant fast bowling from Jarrod Bradley who may be hanging up the whites at the end of the season. Bradley finished with 6/34 as the Sharks needed either Martin Weightman (52) or Steve Devenish (40) to be at the crease at the end; however it was not to be. Upwey Tecoma was disappointing in the replay of last season’s final after the side was toppled for just 96 in perfect batting conditions. The game ended early on day two after left arm medium fast bowler Nathan Caton-Robertson tore through the Tigers line-up to produce a match winning 6/16. Meanwhile, another left-armer and VCCL Country Week debutant, Zach Flintoff, stamped his authority at Knox Gardens as the Falcons inflicted The Basin’s third loss in a row. Flintoff is maturing quickly as a genuine allrounder, performing well during Bendigo Country Week and captured his best figures of 6/17 to shut out the Bears, who were bundled out for 149 in pursuit of 206. The win puts the Falcons back in the finals race with two rounds to play while The Basin must regroup to continue its quest for the premiership. Belgrave, chasing Knoxfield’s 169, was in a winning position however a flurry of late wickets saw the Knights win a thriller by five runs with only two balls to spare. Knoxfield batsman Luke Scanlan, turned bowler captured 5/28 in the close one of the day, giving the Knights some breathing space on the table. Monbulk enjoyed a night with Rodney Hogg, after defeating Upper Gully by 13 runs. Defending 192, Jason Fraser sent down 22 overs for a return of 4/42 as Patrick McKenna (68) and Dan Claughton (31) were the only shining lights for the Kings who are once again under relegation pressure. A specialised trailer for jumps equipment stacks up well with Monbulk Pony Club members.

No longer a hurdle MONBULK Pony Club took a special delivery at its first rally back for this year, when it rolled out the brand-new jumps trailer. The trailer was made to the specifications of parent, Peter Wilhelm, of Prestige Painting, with input from the

club District Commissioner, Jenny Wilhelm. The trailer had been on the club’s wish-list for many years, because the effort of regularly painting jumping poles was often fruitless. Previously, the poles had to be stacked on top of one

another, resulting in chips and scratches. So, the club’s supporters and members have been busy raising funds for this and similar projects for the benefit of the Monbulk Pony Club members.
