Burger queen flips in By JOLENE OGLE BETTY’S $1 burgers are as much an icon of Noosa as the sun-soaked beaches. Mention Betty’s Burgers to any local and they will tell you of the good-old days when food was cheap, the surf was good and Hastings Street was a dirt road. Eventually, Hastings Street development forced Betty to move her business to a food van, where she enjoyed another four years serving locals and visitors at the Noosa Spit. It’s been more than 10 years since Betty last flipped a burger, but Noosa is in for a treat when the 82-year-old takes to the grill at Acres Juicebar this Saturday, all in the name of charity. Funds from every burger sold on
Saturday will go straight to local Ursula Lockwood, who has suffered with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) for over 15 years. Ursula is well-known in the community having worked alongside Noosa’s other icon, Hey Bill, and having spent many years in Sunshine Beach. “Despite my decision to move to Brisbane to be closer to specialist doctors and medical treatments, I still consider the Sunshine Coast my home and in my heart I remain very much a local girl,” she said. Since her diagnosis, Ursula has fought hard to raise enough funds to fly to Russia for a Human Stem Cell treatment, which is currently not available in Australia.
“Risky? Yes. But I’m determined to do all in my power to take advantage of this ground-breaking opportunity that offers incredible hope to all of us with MS,” she said. “The cost is extremely high and the waiting list is long, but I refuse to give up hope of a major improvement in my quality of life.” In the name of fund-raising, Acres Juicebar owners and sisters Katie and Margot Newman phoned Betty Wallace and asked if she would make a comeback to help raise funds for their dear friend, Ursula. Betty jumped straight on board, calling her original baker and butcher to ensure only the best burgers are served on Saturday.
Since announcing the event of Facebook, more than 890 people have liked the post, 237 have commented on it and over 400 people have shared the event, but Betty isn’t bothered by all the fuss. “Oh yeah, I don’t really understand all that stuff,” she said. And we might even be lucky enough to see Betty back on the grill. “I’m supervising, but you never know. I might have a go,” she said. Don’t miss the return of Betty’s Burgers this Saturday only from 11am to 3pm at Acres Juicebar, Gibson Road, Noosaville. Burgers are $1 each for small and $2 for a large burger. All proceeds will be donated to Ursula’s fund-raising campaign.
All funds raised from the sale of Betty’s $1 and $2 burgers will be donated to Ursula Lockwood (pictured with Hey Bill).

Red-y to be red hot By MEGAN WILSON GINGER, Rusty and Bluey are just some of the names given to redheads, but only one name was appropriate on Friday at the Yandina Ginger Factory and that was Red Hot. Buderim Gingers’ nation-wide search to find Australia’s Hottest Ginger attracted more than 2300 entries with the winners, Bec Mountford and Nick Glen, being announced as the reddest of the red last Friday. Bec, 18, said she felt privileged to represent gingers and was glad to have her unique feature celebrated. “I’m like anyone else, just a bit different said Bec. Nick, 23, who is the only redhead in his family, said he loved the experience and although he never thought of becoming a model before, might consider it now. The winners go home with a 12-month modelling contract with Division Model Management and a share in the $15,000 prize pool. Other winners include Michael Collie, 29, who took out the prize for Hottest Ginger Beard and Bailey Hart, 27, who won the People’s Choice Award after weeks of campaigning.
Michael Collie took out the prize for Hottest Ginger Beard. “I campaigned three times a day on Facebook and Instagram said Bailey. Sydney based redhead Bailey is donating her prizes to be raffled with all money raised going to help the other well loved redheads, orangutans.
People's Choice – Bailey Hart is all heart, donating the funds raised from raffling her prize to help orangutans.

INBRIEF At home to car raiders POLICE are urging locals and visitors to lock their cars, even if they are parked in their driveways for just a few minutes. Last week three people reported items stolen from their unlocked cars that were parked in the driveway of their homes throughout the Noosa shire. Noosa Heads Officer in Charge Senior Sergeant Steve McReight said it would be great to be able to leave a car unlocked but that was just inviting thieves. “People will target cars that are unlocked, he said, “even if it’s parked in your driveway. "None of the recent incidents have involved smashed windows. Every car was unlocked.“ An international visitor also had items stolen from his car when he left his keys wrapped in a T-shirt on the beach while he went for a surf at Sunshine Beach. The German national had his passport, three credit cards and a wallet stolen.
Lock it or lose it.
School zone EIGHT speeding tickets were issued in half an hour last Tuesday when local police began a blitz on school zones. Police are reminding drivers to drive with caution and to the speed limit in school zones now that term has started and have warned of more traffic operations to come. Senior Sergeant Steve McReight said police will be patrolling local school zones in the coming weeks to remind motorists to slow down.

New biosphere in the wind By JOLENE OGLE NOOSA Mayor Noel Playford has welcomed Noosa Biosphere Association’s (NBA) decision to voluntarily wind-up the organisation after eight years of serving the community. Mayor Playford said the council would soon call a public meeting to discuss setting up a new Noosa Biosphere Reserve community association that will complete the new
community-based biosphere management structure. In a statement from the NBA, a spokesperson said the decision to wind-up was made in conjunction with Noosa Council to avoid future confusion and allow the council to take the next step in setting up the new association. “We were incorporated eight years ago with our primary objective to see management of the Biosphere
safely back in the hands of our community which members now agree has been achieved with the return of our council,” the spokesperson said. Mayor Playford congratulated the NBA’s efforts over the past eight years, particularly the important role played in achieving de-amalgamation. “NBA’s gesture is a show of faith that the new biosphere management framework, signed off by council in
December, will place control firmly in the community’s hands,” he said. “I congratulate NBA members on their past work and I encourage them, along with other interested residents, to consider contributing to the future of Noosa through the new incorporated association.” The council will host the upcoming public meeting but it is up to the community to take the lead in establishing the new association.
The biosphere model includes the new company – Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation – and the associated public trust to oversee strategic direction. Directors of the new Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation have had their first meeting and the community will have the chance to meet them at the coming meeting.

PROVING you can take the man from the ocean, but not the ocean from the man, one of Sunshine Beach Surf Club’s first Nippers will return to patrol the beaches where he first learnt lifesaving skills almost 21 years ago. Richard Francia joined the first ever Nippers program in 1994 at the age of 10 but after five years in the program he moved to the United Kingdom with his family when he was 15 years old. But in the UK, a far cry from Queensland’s salty wind and sandy shores, Richard never forgot the allure of Sunshine Beach. After having recently moved to Brisbane, Richard said he was excited to be close to the beach once again and will make his way back to Sunshine Beach Surf Club to patrol the same beaches he did 20 years ago. Richard will re-take his bronze medallion and come to Sunshine Beach on the weekends to patrol and dreams of moving back permanently. The first Nippers program was much more subdued than today’s efforts, with numbers restricted to only 40 participants due to safety concerns. There are now up to 230 Nippers enrolled in the program each season with ages ranging from five to 14. After operating for more than 20 years, the Sunshine Beach Surf Club Nipper program has helped hundreds of local children learn essential lifesaving skills, gain confidence and has also produced Australian champions.

Furry friends finding families By DARRYN SMITH POPPY the Staffy cross pup didn’t have to work hard to bring a smile to the faces of Noosa locals at the Pet Stock National Adoption Day last Saturday. Noosa Pet Stock was one of more than 100 Pet Stock stores throughout Australia that teamed up with 130 rescue groups to help find a forever home for their furry friends. Noosa RSPCA manager Nicole Cleary was happy to bring along a selection of kittens and pups like Poppy who are all looking for a home and a second chance at love. Nicole was also available for advice on how prospective
adoptees may be able to help a pet in need. “It’s a good opportunity to show we are doing adoptions in a different way,” she said. “We can get out there in the community and show people shelters aren’t always sad places and also have a face in the community.” Noosa Friends of the Hound vice-president Katrina Koutsellis was pleased to also be invited along to the National Adoption Day event. “It’s an absolutely fantastic idea,” she said. “It showcases the dogs and makes people think about adopting and not buying from a breeder.”

“We noticed third and fourth placed entrants came from nowhere so, yes, we are very nervous as the count continued and anyone could have taken our place.” Sunshine Butterflies has recently bought a hobby farm to extend its services to animal care therapy and horticultural therapy. Leanne said everyone has their fingers crossed as they wait for the cheque presentation on 18 February at Martin Place, Sydney. “We could do with the money,” she said. The top two charities with the most photos submitted will take home $50,000 each in what is the final round of the $1 million charity giveaway. To date, Dick Smith has given away $6.5 million to charities and Leanne is hoping Sunshine Butterflies is next in line.

IT will be a nervous wait for local charity Sunshine Butterflies as members head to Sydney to find out whether they will share in the Dick Smith $1 million giveaway. Thirty-seven charities from around Australia will share in $500,000 but Sunshine Butterflies is hoping to come home with one of the $50,000 cheques. The competition ran from July to December last year and required charities to send in photographs of people holding Dick Smith products. Sunshine Butterflies founder Leanne Walsh said the charity was in the lead until December after which the entrants were listed in alphabetical order to not give away the results. “From the 19 December the list was put in alphabetical order, so we are unaware if we remained in first place or not,” she said.

INBRIEF Tourism Noosa
The first community jury in action. Picture: DARRYN SMITH
Jury is out on waste NOOSA’S 24 Community Jury members wasted no time on Saturday getting straight into investigating the best way to reduce the 10,000 tonnes of organic waste currently reaching local landfill annually. The jury will spend the next five months unpacking the complicated topic as they prepare to report back to council with their recommendations. Noosa Mayor Noel Playford said organic waste management
was an incredibly multi-faceted subject, with long-term financial and environmental implications for Noosa ratepayers. “Waste management costs council more than $13 million annually and there are space constraints and emissions targets facing councils all over Australia, forcing the need to reduce the volume of organic waste being sent to landfill,” he said. “The implications of getting this wrong could run into tens of
millions of dollars, hence the importance of an exhaustive and well-rounded investigation of all the options.” As part of Saturday’s session, the jury heard how a typical household produces enough general waste to fill eight shopping trolleys annually, including more than $650 worth of wasted food. Roughly 48 per cent of that household waste is potentially compostable, but currently ends up in landfill.
The jury will use monthly meetings to ask hard questions and seek out further information from experts on residents’ behalf. Mayor Playford said the selected jury members reflected the demographic profile of Noosa and would incorporate a wide range of points of view. “The jury’s contribution will assist us to make informed decisions around how we best manage organic waste into the future,” he said.

After five consecutive years as a state finalist and a consistent average rating of 96 per cent, Noosa Boathouse has finally made it to the top five. Photos of Noosa values NOOSA Council is calling for photos that express Noosa. Roadside trees, footpath dining, minimal signage and the use of natural materials are some of the things residents have told council they love about Noosa and want to see captured in a new values and principles document to be used by council staff and the design community. Council are asking for residents and visitors to upload pictures with examples of the sorts of visual elements they think work well currently within the shire. Photos can be uploaded, as well as written submissions, at Council’s YourSay Noosa portal at http://yoursay. noosa.qld.gov.au or alternatively via email to assets@noosa.qld.gov.au.The website also includes discussion forums and a survey.

TOURISM Noosa will now oversee all of the shire’s tourist marketing activities from July. The change is part of new arrangements to be adopted by council when their obligation to fund Sunshine Coast Council owned Sunshine Coast Destination Limited to the tune of$50,000 ends in June. Noosa Mayor Noel Playford said council wouldn’t reduce funding for marketing, but would no longer fund a company owned and controlled by another council. “We are obliged to ensure Noosa tourism levy funds are spent on clearly defined objectives and Tourism Noosa will ensure value for money and accountability,” he said. “Tourism Noosa has spent many years successfully marketing Noosa both nationally and abroad. “It has many runs of the board and it is well positioned to drive our tourism marketing.” Tourism Noosa Chairman Steve McPharlin thanked the Noosa Council for entrusting the team with the responsibility of marketing the Noosa region. “As the destination marketing company charged with marketing Noosa, we take this responsibility seriously and remain committed to protecting and enhancing the Noosa brand, product and destination,” he said. Mr McPharlin said Tourism Noosa looked forward to a continued collaboration with all partners including Noosa Council, Sunshine Coast Destination Ltd, other regional stakeholders and Tourism Australia, by investing in measurable tourism initiatives that would bring economic benefit to the Noosa tourism industry and local community.

Runs on board By JOLENE OGLE SUPPORT is pouring in for the Betty Blockbuster community cricket day with local businesses and community members lending a hand to help raise funds for breast cancer support. Local real estate principal Rosemary Callaghan is the driving force behind the McGrath Foundation Pink Stumps Day fundraising event that will see locals come together for a friendly game of cricket on 21 February at the Tewantin cricket grounds. Rosemary, who lost her mother to breast cancer, said the event is close to her heart and she hopes to raise funds to help other women who are suffering with breast cancer. “I have always watched cricket and the McGrath Foundation is close to my heart because my mother was a big cricket fan and I lost my mother to breast cancer,” she said. Ricky’s River Bar and Restaurant is the latest local business to come on board and lend a hand, of-
fering to supply pulled pork buns on the day as well as a voucher for Ricky’s Wood Fire Grill. Rosemary has already hit her fundraising target for six by raising more than $1100 just before Christmas and more than $2000 in prizes have been donated. There will also be face painting and balloons for the kids, plus plenty of action on the pitch as Noosa locals and business owners take to the field. The Betty Blockbuster Pink Stumps Day will be held at the Mat Thornhill Oval, McKinnon Drive, Tewantin, on Saturday 21 February from noon. Anyone who would like to sponsor, support or play in the event should contact Rosemary on 0419 236 133 or email rose@rosemarycallaghanrealty.com.au. Everyone who comes along on the day and makes a donation will go in the draw to win a signed Michael Clarke cricket bat which has been kindly donated by Sportspower Noosaville.

THE Thursday Girls are back to it, raising funds for underprivileged students in Noosa who they believe should have access to the same opportunities as their peers. This year, The Thursday Girls are inviting anyone who wants to help with fundraising to come and join the group at its monthly luncheons. The first luncheon for 2015 will be held on Thursday 26 February at Bertoni’s, Thomas Street, Noosaville. This year The Thursday Girls will focus on their educational program designed to help students from low-income families access school-based activi-
ties and school programs such as swimming lessons, school excursions and school camps. “Unfortunately, some families find themselves, from time to time, in situations where they cannot afford to pay for extracurricular activities and this can lead to hardship and heartache for these families,” they said. Anyone is welcome to join The Thursday Girls. Anyone interested in attending the first luncheon of the year on Thursday 26 February at Bertoni’s can phone Di Kirby on 5474 1184 or email brian.dianne2@ bigpond.com.

THE numbers are in and Noosa District State High School has a lot to be proud of with 78 per cent of students graduating with an OP score between 1 and 10. According to the school, nine students achieved an OP within the 1 to 5 range, and 98 per cent of eligible students received tertiary offers. Almost 300 vocational education and training certificates were issued and 93 per cent of students graduated with a Queensland Certificate of Education. A Noosa District State High School spokesperson said the results were a wonderful achievement from the graduates. “It will soon be back to business after a long summer holiday for many of the graduates who plan to embark on their tertiary studies at some of Queensland’s leading universities,” the spokesperson said. Graduate Karli Kuskopf is one of the students who achieved an OP score of 1, and has enrolled to study a double bachelor degree of Law and Journalism at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT). Nikki Craigie, Nadia Dunning and Emily Beattie all received an OP score of 2, and have enrolled at the University of Queensland. Nikki said she was looking forward to studying a Bachelor of Science, while Nadia is planning to study a Bachelor of Pharmacy, and Emily would enjoy a gap year in Europe be-

A winner needs a team Benny’s
beat BENNY PIKE
ONE of the great things about sport is that a winner is normally decided on the spot - you either cross the line first, jump the highest, score the most points, touch the wall first, or are the last man standing as in Steve Bradbury’s case. Prime Minister Tony Abbott remains in the top job after a 61-39 result in the spill motion earlier in the week. Mr Abbott has made promises that he will change and he will be more consultative. I am, like many of you are, an LNP voter and I’m happy this action has now been put to bed. Or has it? If it’s not Malcolm Turnbull, will someone else come from the bleachers, after some backbencher no-one has heard of, puts his or her hand up asking for another challenge? Let me assure you, that’s what will happen as Mr Abbott isn’t going to change his style. His style is what got the Liberals back in after the previous government’s constant leadership challenges.
What a majority of Australians don’t want is instability, and certainly not party backstabbing just because of someone’s ego - who wants to have their picture taken or be interviewed on television. I don’t have a problem with Abbott but I do have a problem with people who don’t want to play the game. The game most politicians know they are in, once they put their hand up for pre-selection at their home base. Look at any successful sporting team. Cricketers need to bat and bowl, rugby league need forwards to win the ball, before the backs run wide to score, a boxer gets advice between rounds, a golfer listens to his caddie, Black Caviar didn’t win 25 races on the trot without jockey Luke Nolen onboard and Peter Moody training. I only wish the state election results could be as easy as a 9am Monday meeting, with Labor still with its nose in front but still waiting to deliver the knock-out punch. The end result is that Gympie to Tweed Heads is LNP, that will not change, there will be no morning meeting.
The decision now lies in the hands of others who quite rightly will vote for what’s best for their constituents. Thankfully politics and sport don’t mix, other than great photo opportunities but let’s take a snapshot of Noosa sport. At the recent Sport Star of the Year Awards night, Jocelyn McCallum, Luke Thomas, Shara Gillow, Remy Fairweather, Jordan Mercer, Jordan Csabi, Brittany Elmslie, Julian Wilson were all named in the individual section. Noosa Festival of Surfing scored Event of the Year, perennial winner Josh Constable was inducted into the Hall of Fame, and organiser Phil Jarratt was one of a quartet into the Legends Category. Noosa hosts numerous quality annual events like Triathlon and Marathon Festivals, Sevens International Rugby, Pro-Ams, Fishing Festivals, Swimming and Surfing. Our facilities invite and allow national and international teams and individuals to come here. And as highly regarded Tri coach Nick Croft says ‘Noosa provides a home away from home’. It’s pretty simple really. Until next time.
Back row from left - Oscar Rodgers, Tristan Collins, Zac Barwicki, Zion Pettigrove, Tom Emanual and Brock Redwood. Front row - Nick Sloman, Tom Wilson, Niamh Johnston and Ben Ashman.
Punching above their weight IT WAS an eventful finish to this summer’s Ocean Assault series as some of Australia’s top surf athletes hit the beach at North Burleigh over the weekend. The Surf Sports series saw more than 250 athletes compete across the two day event, with the finals on Sunday. Ocean Assault is a threepart series with the first two rounds held earlier in the year and the third round held last Saturday.

FRIDAY eNVIRoNMeNT FoRuM NewS FoR FeBRuARY 13 HALLS Creek gives its name to a 1400-hectare parcel of land situated south west of Caloundra and east of the Bruce Highway. This land is adjacent to the Pumicestone Passage which is an internationally significant wetland forming part of the RAMSAR listed Moreton Bay Marine Park. Both Caloundra and Sunshine Coast Councils in consultation with the community, have consistently rejected moves to develop this land thereby protecting the environmental and recreational values of Pumicestone Passage. Now the State Government is insisting that it be designated as a growth area in the South East Queensland Regional Plan. Guest speaker at the Friday Environment Forum on 13 February, Weibe ter Bals of Sunshine Coast Environment Council, will explain the history of Halls Creek and the various threats should development occur there. Join the audience at Noosa Parks Association’s Environment Centre, Wallace Drive, Noosaville for the Friday Forum, from 10.30am. To

More than 700 million people don't have access to clean water. Picture: wATeRAID, ToM GReeNwooD
Call for fresh water walkers IN NOOSA, we rarely need to walk more than 10 steps to access clean water, but in the developing world, people have no choice but to walk up to 10 kilometres a day. The WaterAid Walk 4 Water campaign is a fund-raising event from 16 to 20 March asking people to clock up 10,000 steps per day in a bid to raise funds and awareness for the more than 700 million people around the world who don’t have access to safe water. The national fund-raiser coincides with World Water Day on 22 March, and asks participants to walk the equivalent daily journey women undertake in the developing world to collect often unsafe water. WaterAid Australia CEO Paul Nichols said access to water was a basic human right and it was staggering to think one in 10 of the world’s population was deprived of their right to water. “Over half a million children needlessly die every year from diseases such as diarrhoea and cholera by drinking unsafe water,” he said. “Unsafe water also impacts productivity and limits economies, taking time away from education, work and other tasks that could provide additional income for families.” Last year WaterAid Australia, through its local partners in South East Asia and the Pacific, helped almost 8000 people access clean, fresh water. Anyone is welcome to register for the Walk 4 Water fund-raiser by visiting www.walk4water.com.au and asking friends, family and co-workers to sponsor 10,000 steps. Once registered, all participants will be sent a pedometer to count the steps taken.
Join the pride By DARRYN SMITH THE Cooroy Pomona Lions Club is looking for community-minded locals to join their club. Club president Robin Salmon said he could sum up in one sentence what it meant to be a Lion. “You get a lot out of your community and sometimes you feel you have to give a bit back,” he said. As an organisation, the Lions have been serving the community since 1972 by co-ordinating events such as the annual International Wimmer’s King of the Mountain race, as well as provide breakfast for students at the Noosa District High School Pomona campus every Tuesday morning. Members of the Cooroy Pomona Lions Club also volunteer at the annual Christmas in Cooroy family event, hold monthly barbecues at the Pomona markets and cater for the Pomona and Cooroy school celebrations. The Cooroy Pomona Lions Club meets at the Old Pomona Scout Den at the base of Mount Cooroora on the second Wednesday of each month at 7pm. New members are very welcome and can phone David on 0414 833 509 for details.

Vote of thanks A GREAT thankyou to the Noosa Tewantin Bowls Club for making my birthday wish come true. The ticket to rise was hilarious. Special thanks to Peter, Dawn and the groundsmen for making my day so much more special. Thankyou very much Kathleen for organising it all. Yvonne Atanassoff, Tewantin. A big thumbs up to the man who collected the litter in Lions Park, Noosaville, last week. We know it wasn’t your rubbish, so thank you for looking after Noosa! Thank you to the staff of River Read, Noosaville, for always being so helpful and friendly. Love your store!
Right on to this gorgeous weather! Our visitors from France are loving it.
Shame on the litter bugs who threw fast food wrappers from their window on Reef Street on Saturday. That is disgusting.
Write off to the people who fail to give way on the roundabouts in Noosa. It’s dangerous and someone is going to get hurt.

Vote for change THANKYOU to all the voters in Noosa who wanted a change. Not only for the area but the state. Labor will not forget those who voted for me. Labor now has the ability to show our leader will consult and listen to the communities of Queensland, which is how a true democratic society works. Noosa needs some change to progress and I will continue to fight for a better Noosa right up to the next election. I will always do the very best for my community - with passion comes drive, with drive comes commitment, and with commitment comes results for our community. An example of our commitments to the electorate were: * Candidate and my team phone called over 10,000 homes in Noosa; * Candidate and my team doorknocked over 2500 homes in Noosa; * Candidate and my team held community barbecues to talk to the public; * Candidate and my team held street stalls to introduce the Labor candidate to Noosa; and * Labor sea of red roadside every weekday up to the election, now that’s commitment. I am committed to ensure Noosa does not get left behind, and that the people of Noosa have a say in how we protect our community and the lifestyle we already enjoy. A true community balance is needed and not just that of a few in self-perceived positions of power, pushing their views onto the entire area. I will return to my real job in just over a week. Yes, I am a local paramedic and I love my job. See you around Noosa. Mark Denham, Labor candidate in the State Election.
Stunned I WAS totally stunned so many voters in the Noosa Shire and environs voted for Labor (or the Greens, which was another vote for Labor preferentially) in Saturday’s election given the treatment received from the previous Labor Government. It seems many voters have forgotten the forced council amalgamations, the water ‘grab’ by Brisbane and Unity Water forced on us - all of this on top of the Traveston Dam fiasco that drove some farmers to suicide and others off their productive lands. As well as the ill-conceived desalination scheme that cost billions of dollars of taxpayers’ money and is now mothballed. Campbell Newman was working hard to work off the debt the previous Labor Government left us, but to no avail. It seems now, under Labor, we will be back to a ‘handout’ mentality. Shirley E. Krasnoff, Sunrise Beach.
Lack of communication IF THE LNP were discarded because of a lack of communication then perhaps Noosa Council should be concerned by their lack of transparency. Unfortunately, this new government is already indebted and these fiscal restraints will impact Noosa Council’s already strained finances. Forced amalgamation of weaker councils could be a solution. John Lobb, Peregian Springs.

Run the beach AS A British visitor that has walked many miles on your glorious local beaches, I think your local/tourist publicity office ought to consider organising a beach run (obviously around low tide) along the line of the city half marathons/10-kilometre runs that take place around the world. The flat, smooth continuous beaches from Sunrise to Coolum (no cars or aircraft) really are crying out for an annual event of this type. With the right build-up and probable TV coverage, I’m sure this beautiful Noosa area would reap fabulous publicity. Pete Williams, Currently at Peregian Springs.
Beyond colour coding IF ONLY the world was as simple as Dr R. Pearson believes in his letter to the Noosa Today (5 February). The colour code approach to life. I guess the election results should say something to him. The support in the Noosa state electorate, isn’t echoed across the state. Far from it. Extremely close to a minority of colour-coded LNP voters exist elsewhere. It looks like the LNP may lose power (or definitely have a very tenuous hold on government). It was curious Dr. R. Pearson only mentioned local issues in his form guide on the LNP ‘successes’ and ‘guarantees’. All his assertions about the LNP producing results on local issues, should be looked at for what they are. Dr Pearson’s asserted the LNP: ... will ‘enliven the abandoned TAFE’ What - the one which so many in this electorate worked to have built but was suddenly closed by the LNP because their bean-counters at head office couldn’t see the value of visual arts courses in a community. How conveniently it was for them not to see the employment successes gained by many of these students in their futures? (As if we need less people in the creative industries today! There is an obvious dearth of creative thinking among so many people involved in current political decision-making. That is why our country is being left so far behind and bereft of new ideas). Dr Pearson asserted: ‘Only the NLP can clean up the rotting hulks on the Noosa River’. Well, Glen Elmes has had eight straight years in power here and has never done anything about this old problem. I would say as a campaign strategy, Mr Elmes should either do something about it this time or stop rolling out the same empty threat
each election. Does he think people are stupid? Do you have any good ideas Mr Elmes, for the high unemployment in this area? Dr Pearson also asserted: ‘The LNP will keep the Noosa Hospital running’. There have been serious indications that funds will dry up from an LNP government to keep this hospital open. Just ‘running’ does not plan for future needs. The best hospital care is of the utmost importance to everyone. With a life-threatening event, going to Nambour or anywhere else out of this area, may not be enough. In the above assertions, Dr R. Pearson uses the words: ‘enliven’, ‘clean up’ and ‘keep running’. These are merely the daily duties of keeping a house going (in domestic terminology). What about ‘new programs’, ‘trying new ideas’ and ‘really listening to people about what the community needs and dreams of’? What about other major issues in our community not addressed by the local government representative? I’m really sorry that it looks like we will never get this kind of expansive thinking from the current LNP representation in our area. Should we be happy with this state of affairs? I think not. Philip Brown, Noosaville.
Lack of intelligence? SO IT wasn’t intelligent analysis that caused voters in Queensland and Victoria to vote as they did? The PM reckons it was voters “absent-mindedness” that caused the results. Maybe it’s just an outbreak of democratic free thought that is soon to hit NSW? Margaret Wilkie, Peregian Beach.
Looking forward IN JANUARY 2014 Noosa became a council again, having received an 80 per cent vote from ratepayers to preserve the ideals of the Noosa area regarding excessive development and protection of our national parks. In January 2015 50 per cent of the residents voted to return the sitting member, thus hoping for the return of another LNP government who before the ballot wanted to legislate to prevent objections by ratepayers and the Noosa Council with threats of fines and penalties by the LNP State Government which wanted to foster development and tourism projects into our National Parks unlimited. Where did the voters go wrong - letters in your paper are all looking backwards to what happened years ago, what happened to those 80 per cent from 2014 who were looking forward with such enthusiasm for the Noosa Council, which thus far is successful. The LNP appears to have been thrown out for their ideals and proposals, so give the new mob a go and you can do the same to them if they don’t perform, like the last lot. Look forward, not back. Garry Boyle, Pomona.

How an agent can help onthehome
front WITH EMILY BLACK LITTLE FISH MEDIA
SOME readers might have noticed a ‘for sale by owner’ advertisement in the paper recently, and I must confess that this is my property, which is for sale. You may be wondering why I have decided to list my property by myself, and not go for an agent. I’ve chosen to go this way as about 70 per cent of all my clients are local real estate agents, and knowing all of them for many years, I couldn’t choose just one. I had a lady phone me to ask for advice on selling her home herself, but my advice is not to do it. Even with my connections, it is a very stressful process and I would not recommend it. Little Fish Media does photography, copywriting and social media marketing just to name a few things - so I was able to do all the marketing sides of things myself. But it takes time. Then it takes time to answer phone calls, show the property and do the contract (not that we’ve gotten to that part yet). And it might not sound like much, but when I am trying to run a business and my husband works full-time, it is a lot. Real estate agents take all the stress out of the sale process, and that is just one of many things they bring to the table. They have the time to take the phone calls, show people your home and manage your contract. The next step is choosing your agent, and how do you know who is the best person to enlist? Those agents or agencies with the loudest advertisements aren’t necessarily the best fit for you. Agents are a critical part of the selling process who not only take out the stress, but offer professional insights and experience as well.
It certainly isn't easy to sell your own home. Get in touch with a professional. Word of mouth is always a good way to get started - ask around to see if any of your friends and colleagues have had a good or bad experience with any local agencies and agents. If you are new to the area and are unable to seek recommendations, check the local paper and see who is out there. Once you have a list of potential agents ready, call them and arrange to meet with them for an interview to ultimately choose an agent who has experience, integrity and professionalism. Some questions to ask yourself include:
· Do they seem genuinely interested in your
listing price? Some questions for you ask them include:
· What is your experience as a real estate agent?
· How long have you worked in the local area?
· How many sales were you involved with in the past 12 months?
· How many listings do you have? · What are your strengths as an agent? · Which marketing strategy is best for our property?
· Do they have a membership of the local,
I would suggest having the agents come to your listing - this way they can conduct an on-site appraisal and can aptly communicate on how to best serve you.
· Do they have knowledge of the local area

property, or is it just another listing for them? state or national real estate institute? where your listing is located?
· Do they have knowledge of the price bracket you are selling in?
· Are they honest about the market and your
From this process it should be easy to tell who to pick, and once you’ve chosen your agent a written agreement should be drawn up, which will show a fee estimate, charges
and expenses you are expected to pay once sold. You can choose to send the agreement to your solicitor before signing to ensure everything is kosher. They should provide you with:
· Recent market sales and appraisal data in your area;
· Contact with buyers; · Advice on marketing and presenting your home;
· Start the marketing and advertising campaign;
· Negotiate services between you and your buyers; and
· Provide administration of all legal and financial requirements.
Now that you’re armed with this bevy of information you should be well on your way to choosing the agent that is right for you. And this week I will wish you all happy home selling. Until next time!
Submission support for negative gearing IN ITS pre-budget submission, the Real Estate Institute of Australia (REIA) has urged the government to retain negative gearing to encourage property investment and place downward pressure on rents. REIA CEO Amanda Lynch said negative gearing and the capital gains tax (CGT) feed the supply side pipeline at a time of chronic under supply in Australia. “Any alteration to the current arrangements would likely result in a need for a greater investment by the government in social housing and could potentially increase rents, as recognised by the Henry Tax Review in 2010, which states the current provisions placed downward pressure on rents,” she said. REIA’s pre-budget submissions include eight 18 NOOSA TODAY | Thursday, 12 February, 2015
recommendations, which they describe as contributing to Australia’s economic development and productivity, while attracting first home buyers into the market. Among the recommendations, is a suggestion conveyance stamp duty is abolished and replaced with a more efficient source of revenue for states and territories, as well as the establishment of a scheme to encourage young Australians to have access to their superannuation to raise a deposit for a first home. REIA also recommends a mechanism to ensure the availability of reliable data on housing demand and supply to assist in formulating effective policies, as well as better use of private investment to improve the supply of housing for social housing tenants transitioning to private rental.
REIA have recommended a scheme to encourage young Australians to have access to their superannuation to raise a deposit for a first home.

Only six left – move quickly AVJENNINGS is preparing for its final land release at Noosa Heads’ premier residential address – Elysium Noosa – with just six home sites remaining in the current stage. The final 20 home sites, which will be known as the Pinnacle precinct, were released to the market at the beginning of February, and are expected to be met with strong demand. AVJennings is taking registrations of interest ahead of an exclusive red carpet sales event, where serious buyers who have paid their deposits will have the first opportunity to select their blocks, which range between 465 square metres and 792 square metres. State General Manager for Queensland, Rodney Chadwick urges buyers to move quickly - with more than 80 home sites sold at Elysium during 2014, the final lots are expected to be taken up quickly. “The Pinnacle precinct represents the final
opportunity for lifestyle buyers to become part of Noosa Heads’ benchmark residential community,“ he said. “Sales have been consistently strong over the past 12 months with buyers competing to snap up the increasingly scarce supply of land across Noosa, and with Elysium now on the countdown to sell-out we have no doubt these lots will sell rapidly.
at Elysium since this time last year, with lots averaging approximately $300,000. “The majority of recent sales have been made up of local buyers looking to upgrade their home and lifestyle while retaining the exclusivity of a Noosa Heads address,“ Mr Chadwick said.
“The iconic Noosa lifestyle is attainable, and well within reach for many families at Elysium which gives buyers the opportunity to be part of an exclusive established community at an achievable price.“
“Our customers see the value in building a new home that perfectly suits their lifestyle and budget, rather than purchasing an existing home in an older area that often is in need of renovation. Elysium gives customers the opportunity to build their own home that reflects their achievements and lifestyle in a location with resort-style facilities.“ The opportunity to secure a new home site in a sought-after destination like Noosa Heads is extremely rare, and with developable land in such short supply in Noosa Heads, Elysium is clearly a highly attractive investment.“
Predominantly local buyers have paid a total of more than $24 million for home sites
Mr Chadwick says the overall vision for Elysium Noosa since AVJennings acquired
“The tight supply of land in the region, combined with competitive pricing and a range of home sites available have all helped to boost sales at Elysium over the past year, however the key drawcard continues to be the lifestyle on offer.

the site in 2010, has been to create a community - not just a new development – which has proved to be one of the key selling points. “Elysium Noosa features hectares of parklands and the award-winning Rec Club which is located at the heart of the community,“ he said. “The Rec Club is a central space for residents and their guests to relax and unwind, while enjoying the state of the art amenities including a lap pool, tennis court, gymnasium, barbecues, an observation deck to take in lagoon views, resident lounge and mixed use fitness and leisure zones.“ To register your interest in the Pinnacle precinct visit www.elysiumnoosa.com.au. Catch The Lyrical at Cooroy Originals this Sunday, from 1pm.
live today NOOSA’S LIFESTYLE GUIDE
Join the Cooroy Originals MAKE the most of the summer weather with a blanket, some live tunes and good company at the Cooroy Originals this Sunday, from 1pm. Get along to Apex Park to hear Brea Robertson, Benny D. William, Scott Cook and The Lyrical take to the stage for an afternoon of cool tunes. Brea Robertson is a singer songwriter from Maleny. Growing up, she spent three and a half years travelling around Australia with her family and for the past two
years she has been performing with a trio called Wyla. Brea is passionate about making music from her heart, and wants to share her story through her songs. Benny D. Williams is an extremely talented multi-instrumentalist with an incredibly diverse and rich voice. His music is a dreamy combination of psychedelic soul, blues, roots and trip-funk. With amazing layered vocal harmonies, beautiful acoustic instrumentalism and organic mindboggling use of live performance technology, you could think there’s
a whole band on stage. Benny D. Williams redefines the modern solo performer. Canada’s prairie balladeer Scott Cook is a tirelessly travelling songwriter who has been making a fulltime living at music since 2007, touring extensively across Canada, the US, Europe, Asia and Australia. Scott is currently on tour in support of his fourth release, One More Time Around. Its opening track “Pass It Along“ won the Folk and Acoustic category in the 2013 UK Songwriting Contest. Road-worn, painfully honest,
and deeply human, his straighttalking tunes weave together folk, roots, blues, soul and country with claw hammer banjo arrangements and spacious fingerstyle guitar. The Lyrical, also known as Karl Smith, has become a rising star of the music scene in Brisbane. The Sunshine State capital has always been a hotbed for new talent in a variety of genres and the acoustic/hip-hop/reggae scene is now no exception to that tradition. Following in the footsteps of Ben Harper, Bob Marley, Michael
Franti and Xavier Rudd, The Lyrical reflects the ingenuity and musical aptitude it takes to be great and is fast becoming one of those artists who demand your attention. Catch all these fantastic bands at the Cooroy Originals, a fantastic family-friendly original music event powered by donations and proudly supported by Cooroy Community Bank Branch of Bendigo Bank, Cooroy Hotel, Wimmers Softdrinks, East Coast Originals and Cooroy Chamber of Commerce Inc.
Live on the big screen theatre with unprecedented viewing access to these historic masterpieces. The screenings will start with The Duchess of Malfi on Saturday 28 March and Sunday 29 March, followed by Titus Adronicus on Saturday 5 May and Sunday 6 May. The series will run until
November. Tickets are $23 per adult, $21 per student or concession and $15 per child. These performances are not to be missed. Mark this event in your diary. Contact the ticket box on 5447 5130 for more information and to secure a seat.

of a weatherboard nightmare wedged between the PMG substation and the picture show on a busy section of Highway 1. Every room leaked and the back half of the house stank like the well that divided the laundry from the kitchen. The thunderbox dunny was a long scary walk down into the bowels of the backyard where rats lived in the woodpile and ticks in the convolvulus, and if you got caught short of a Thursday morning, the dunny man would stand outside the door and whistle a tune until you’d finished. (He was a gentleman, and Dad would leave a tallie of Resch’s Pilsener next to the pan for him on the pick-up day before Christmas.) Despite its manifest failings as a shelter, I loved that place and cried like a baby (I was
a man of nine at the time) when our family climbed a rung on the social ladder and moved into a cream brick McMansion with a view over the steelworks. The summer of 1960-61 was just ending and I made the excuse that I was compiling a scrapbook of the brilliant West Indian cricket tour and had to spend hours after school ferreting through the pile of old newspapers in the laundry before the demolition boys moved in. But what I really did down there in what my mum described as “the house from hell” was I paced around the rooms, feeling the tongue and groove, remembering the conversations, the laughter, even the fights, Mum pretending to pack a bag and sitting on the front porch waiting for a bus to take her away from us kids, hearing the tinkle of the piano in the front room where my sisters played duets, and Dad lost the 1955 election to Rex Connor. I moved from room to room in the empty old house, the only home I’d ever known, sobbing. There was no sobbing last Sunday as our

extended family gathered to bid farewell to a humble abode we’d called home for less than a decade, but there were a couple of tears and a lot of memories rekindled as we swam in the skinny lap pool one last time, took selfies, toasted the past and the future in austerity champagne, and took clippings of the frangipani that we’d planted in Nanny and Pa’s ashes. We bought it as a family investment while living overseas, then when we came back we found something appealing about it, like the funky little beach houses that surrounded us in California, bought the kids out, got our mate Jude the miracle worker to design a reno that let the light in, turned the backyard into a fun zone and moved in. Like me when I left the house from hell kicking and screaming because it held all my memories, our grandkids have known no other framework for us, their Ma and Poppie. A few tiny rooms in the burbs with a tiki bar and pool out the back, surf photos on the walls and Hawaiian print cushions on the lounges. Ma’s workroom in the garage, Poppie’s writing room at the far end of the house where he can’t be disturbed unless a wicket falls or it’s cocktail hour somewhere. That was about the sum of us, and now it’s not. It’s funny how the houses you live in can bookend your life, but I got over leaving the house from hell in my first childhood and I know I’ll get over leaving this one as I enter my second. Having a perfectly good alternative venue for the next chapter helps, but also knowing that the new owners seem to love it as much as we do is a comfort. We started with a cliche, so let’s end with one, as the actress said to the archbishop, and at the end of the day, will be the best result for all going forward. Be it ever so humble, there’s no place like home. It’s true. You can take a clipping to the next place, but some things remain planted there.

IF you have ever wished for a gourmet garden, full of fresh herbs and delicious fruit and vegetables you can simply pick, prepare and serve in family meals, then don’t miss Cath Manuel’s coming series of workshops. Founder of Soil to Supper, horticultural therapist and gardener extraordinaire, Cath knows how to create luscious soil, plump produce and even has a few recipes for the wild and wonderful foods she grows in her impressive home garden. Cath will lead workshop participants through a series of workshops, starting with an in-depth look at how to plan and design a garden that will work for you and in the space you have. This workshop will be followed by From The Ground Up, a look at how to create fertile soil to give your vegies the best chance at thriving. By November, participants will be able to harvest their crops and use the produce in some delicious recipes. Cath said she was excited to show people how to create an edible and long-term garden. The workshops will even include a trip to Cath’s home garden where everyone can see firsthand how to build a chicken coop with organic citrus orchid and an edible garden. “I like showing people how a home garden can be,” Cath said. “It’s real and everyone can have a look.” The first workshop is planned for Saturday 28 February at United Synergies, Earnest Road, Tewantin, where participants will learn how to plan and design a garden. Anyone who would like to take part can email Cath at her website www.soiltosupper. com. Each class is $45 per person and will include hands on experience.

Lunch with the lot
WHETHER you’re dining alone of whipping up something for someone special, you can’t go wrong with a simple, rustic recipe this Valentine’s Day. A simple pasta, with a roasted tomato sauce and hint of chilli, is the prefect meal to impress your date or simply treat yourself. With basil and cracked pepper, this dish is best served with a light red wine, such as pinot noir – and served on a gorgeous balcony overlooking the Noosa River, if possible. Ingredients: 4 large Roma tomatoes, cut in half (increase if you are serving more than two people). 6 cherry tomatoes, left whole. Balsamic vinegar. Cracked black pepper. Sea salt. Good-quality olive oil. Bunch of fresh basil leaves, roughly torn by hand. Spaghetti pasta, enough for as many people you are serving. Shaved parmesan cheese. Method: 1. Pre-heat the oven to 160 degrees. Place the Roma tomatoes flesh side down in a roasting pan along with the cherry tomatoes. 2. Drizzle with olive oil and balsamic vinegar, enough to allow a thin layer of juices to form in the bottom of the pan. Be careful not to add too much as the tomatoes will poach rather than roast. 3. Boil a pot of water and add the pasta. Cook until tender. 4. Place the pan in the oven and cook until the outside of the tomatoes begin to blister and pull away from the flesh of the tomatoes. 5. Once cooked, remove four cherry tomatoes (these will be added to the top of the pasta when served). Leave the rest of the tomatoes in the pan, season with salt and pepper, add the basil leaves, and mash with a fork or potato masher until the tomatoes are pulplike. 6. Remove the pasta from the pot, drain, drizzle with olive oil and serve into two large pasta bowls. 7. Pour the tomato sauce over the pasta, top with the remaining cherry tomatoes and parmesan cheese. Delicious! And made in only a matter of minutes. To feed more people, simply increase the ingredients. Any leftover sauce can be frozen once cooled and added to any other pastainspired dishes or stews.

ANYTIME Fitness Cooroy has a new look – and they can’t wait to reveal it to their loyal members. To celebrate the revamp, a grand re-opening will be held on Saturday 21 February with festivities to run from 10am to 2pm. The revamp is part of Anytime Fitness Cooroy’s commitment to deliver the best service to their members. Club owner Wendy said the new look meant the most up-todate design scheme would now be a part of the Cooroy facility. “This also ensures we are keeping up-to-date with current trends in the fitness industry,” she said. “Staying on-trend and delivering modern, convenient fitness options are what has led to the success of Anytime Fitness.” The new decor will feature an earth colour scheme, which Wendy said reflected Cooroy as a down to earth town with down to earth members. “By refreshing our club, we are giving back to our members and maintaining a modern, relaxed and friendly workout environment,” Wendy said. “We want our gyms to be a great place to train and most of all, we want our members to feel better after each session with us.” For more information about Cooroy Anytime Fitness, phone 5447 6488, 0416 289 517 or email cooroy@anytimefitness.com.au.
Get started on the path to a happier, healthier you!
NOOSA naturopath Deb Roberson says she feels fortunate to have helped almost 200 people go through the HcG diet plan, including people of all ages and from all walks of life. Deb said along the way she discovered that people who successfully reached their goals all had something in common. “They stick to a plan that is realistic for them,” she said. The recommended HcG eating plan is a tried and true system, Deb said. “It is structured, however there is plenty of variety, your meals stay interesting and varied,” she said. “This helps you stick with it until you reach your healthy goal weight. When the three simple steps of the HcG plan are followed, you maintain your weight loss for the long-term.” The HcG capsules are a natural medicine supplement that helps your body to burn stored fat fast.
Deb provides her clients with everything they need to start the journey to a healthier, leaner version of themselves, with ongoing professional support. “People are changing their health and changing their lives, which is so exciting to watch,” she said. “As my clients transform their lives with new-found confidence and energy, they are going on to set other goals and achieving things they never thought were possible – including travel, career, lifestyle and relationships. “Health and feeling confident within yourself have such an impact on every part of your life.” Deb said if you wanted some things in your life to change, you needed to change some things in your life. “So what are you waiting for? This could be the most important stepping stone to a healthier, happier life in so many ways,” she said.
Taste of the mountains here to stay MOUNTAIN Dew Natural Spring Water is a family-owned and operated company with 25 years’ experience in the water distribution business. Mountain Dew are proud to support their local distributors who have been operating in the Noosa area for almost three decades, despite facing a lack of work two years ago. Greg Christensen, along with Jaye and son Ollie, know the importance of customer service and reliability, and are committed to delivering the most pure and best tasting natural spring water.
Competitively priced at $10 per 15-litre bottle, Mountain Dew also offers free delivery and save their customers the inconvenience of lugging water from the supermarket. Born and bred locals, Greg and Jaye are proudly involved with local sporting groups such as the Noosa District junior and senior rugby league teams, the Noosa Tigers AFL and the local Red Cross. Greg and Jaye are laying the foundations for a genuine sense of community, with little Ollie sure to follow in their footsteps.

Plan for ‘back’ to school be positioned no lower than shoulder height and no lower than the hollow of the lower back. Children should be encouraged to avoid carrying extra books and if a child appears to push their head forward as they walk, the bag is too heavy. When choosing a schoolbag, it is best to select one with a padded and stiff surface where the bag contacts the child’s back and one with a waist strap will help distribute the weight evenly onto the hips.
It is advised to never use just one strap of the bag, as it puts uneven pressure on the spine, hips, neck and shoulders. If you’re worried about your child’s posture or schoolbag, Noosa Chiropractic is offering a Back to School deal that includes a complimentary consultation, posture check, foot scan, schoolbag assessment and Back to School Basics pack. Tales from the trenches asked me to his house for a drink. I had had a crush on him for so long, so I was excited. I was really looking forward to spending time with him by ourselves and getting to know him. But, we walked to his house and when he opened the door his mum, dad and sister were all sitting at the table. They had tea and coffee and cake laid out, like they were expecting us. We sat down at the table and his mum proceeded to tell me how I was the first girl he had brought home and they were so excited he had met someone. She was asking me if I liked kids. I scoffed some cake, slurped some tea and never saw him again. – Anonymous
MY WORST Valentine’s Day was one year when my nowhusband thought it would be really lovely of him to buy me a vacuum cleaner as a present. I had been complaining about our old, useless one, but a ring or chocolates would have been much more appreciated. I still married the brave man because he later took me to a fancy restaurant for dinner – after vacuuming the house of course! – Anonymous I HAVEN'T been on many Valentine’s Day dates, but I remember one year when I was in school, I must have been 8 or 9, this little boy asked me to be his Valentine. I was so excited I told all my friends in my class. It turns out he had asked all the others girls to be his Valentine, too. What a little Casanova! I was devastated at the time, but it’s funny now. – Cassy Manders ONE time I was on a blind date for Valentine’s Day. It was set up by my friend who assured me the guy was perfect for me. We got to the restaurant and I don’t think he spoke more than four words all night. It was so awkward. I drank a little too much wine
Valentine's dates don't always turn out as planned! and ended up breaking a glass. It was so awkward. I never saw him again. I don’t know what my friend was thinking. – Angela Coward
IT WAS a long time ago, before I was married, but this guy asked me out on a date for Valentine’s Day. We were in the same class at school and he was always very shy
but he was so cute. I had a crush on him for years throughout school. We ran into each other one day in our early twenties and said we would catch up so
we swapped numbers. He texted me to ask me out for Valentine’s Day. We went to a movie, and had all the usual awkward hand touching stuff, and then afterwards he
MINE happened to a friend who I set up on a date. Poor thing. She turned up to meet with the guy I had set her up with. He spent the whole night on his phone texting his mates and didn’t even talk to her. He was such a bad date. My friend is married now. So it all worked out. – Anonymous 1171521-CG07-15

NOOSA Tigers AFL Club has started 2015 with a bang signing some big name players, now the club is set to offer an innovative sponsorship package to local business. The Tigers will offer every local accommodation house a $200 special sponsorship package for the 2015 season. Anyone who comes on board by the end of February as a sponsor will receive a Quick Action Bonus of a $100 food and beverage voucher at the
Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club. The accommodation house would also receive website recognition, advanced information on any coming events or games, invitations to sponsor and ladies days, plus more. AFTER 21 years with the Bicentennial hall as a base, the table tennis club has moved to the sporting hub of Noosa, the Noosa Leisure Centre at Wallace Estate. With a larger floor area available the club has expanded table numbers to 10. The club’s recent inaugural night session at the new venue had many members dust off the cobwebs after the summer break to test out the new arena. Competition season is underway soon and the club is inviting any new players to join the group and challenge existing members, who will gladly welcome any newcomers. All players are graded and allocated a handicap, which theoretically gives everyone an even chance. Fixtures generally run for two to three months in a team format, with trophies awarded to winning teams as well as

Boat crews get results Between the
The Noosa boat crew in action at the Beko Cup carnival on Sunday.
flags RON LANE
IT was their first carnival for two months and in the tough world of surf boat racing this is indeed a big drawback. However the results achieved by the Noosa boat crews at Sunday’s Beko Cup carnival, held at Mooloolaba Beach, speak for themselves. Noosa competed with four crews – women’s, men’s under-23, reserves and masters. The ladies won their division, the under-23 men and the masters finished second and the reserves made the semi- finals. “Overall, we are very happy with the results,” coach and senior sweep David Tomba said. “When you take into consideration that we have not had a race for months our results are pretty good. With only a very small wave to contest, the flat conditions gave our crews a good indication as to the fitness. “At this time of the year it is exactly what they need.” Their next carnival will be round four of the Biko Cup and this will be held at Tallebudgera on 28 February. This series which is run by the Australian Surf Rowers League, is an excellent lead up to the state championships to be held in March, and the nationals in April. While the boaties were doing their thing at Mooloolaba, both Sunshine and Noosa took their swim-
mers and boardies to the Ocean Assault Carnival at North Burleigh on the Gold Coast. Held over Saturday and Sunday, the results for both clubs were encouraging. Once again it was their under-17s who excelled. For Sunshine, the under-17s finished first and second in the blue ribbon event the Taplin Relay, and in the swim
events Nick Sloman finished second in the under-17 surf race then backed up to surprise a lot of people by finishing first in the open surf race. Noosa’s Jordan Mercer won the open board, and Connor Burrows in the under-17 board finished second. In the iron man under-17, Bailey Wil-
liams finished in second place, and in the men’s open surf race Mackenzie Hynard continued his good form to finish second. Despite not winning a medal in the open Taplin Relay, Noosa’s fifth place was one of the best performances of the carnival. The Taplin
Relay teams tackle three disciplines - swim, board and ski. To finish in the top five in a carnival such as the Ocean Assault, which is contested by the best in the state, is a true indicator of the talent we have in our clubs. With both Noosa and Sunshine getting good results in the various divisions of the Taplin, it is indeed very encouraging for both state and nationals titles. At Sunday’s general meeting of the Noosa club, Brett Leckie senior representative for Peregian on the Noosa management committee, thanked Noosa for taking on the task of amalgamating the two clubs. “This has been a major undertaking and I thank Noosa for all we have achieved. At present we are starting a drive to increase our bronze holders by a hundred. This will of course take time but it will be a massive step towards our future on Peregian Beach.” Another to address the meeting was Ken Denham. Ken a member of Noosa, is one of a small group of Australians who are at present working to get surf lifesaving established in Vietnam. Vietnam, a country of non-swimmers, has over the last several years suffered some 10,000 drowning’s in creeks, rivers and beaches. Sadly the majority are children. This is totally unacceptable. Three regions where work is now under way are Vung Tau, Na Trang and Da Nang. At present, the Australian Volunteers for International Development group, a branch of Life Saving Australia, is in support.

ALL the Noosa Heads Nippers from under-8 to under-14 had the opportunity to shine in the second round of our Nipper Club Championships, on Sunday. The Nippers all turned up ready to compete - and compete they did, each and every one of them, all to the very best of their ability. Nippers raced in swim, board, iron man and woman, wades, sprints and flags events. I was greatly impressed at the level of sportsmanship displayed by all competitors and I must congratulate all the winners and place-getters. The highlight though for me on the day
was a little under-10 Nipper who at the start of the season would swim 10 or 12 strokes have a breather then repeat until he finished the swim – but yesterday he just put his head down and swum every stroke out around the cans and did not stop once. He did not get a podium finish, but the pride of his achievement was evident in the smile on his face as he ran up the beach to the finish line – priceless. To me he also was a winner on the day. My sincere thanks to all the age managers, parent officials, parent helpers, coaches and the barbecue crew not just for last Sunday but for all that you do. Nippers would not exist without you.

Noosa Heads Bowls OUR Super Challenge Bronze Section 5 men chalked up their first win of the season scoring a 3-2 rinks victory over Pacific Paradise on Saturday. The ladies won a rink each but Noosa Heads led on aggregate shots to register 8-2. Our Section 8 sides played at Glasshouse where the locals took the points in men's and women’s matches.
The first Monday Noosa 1500 drew a capacity field of 96 bowlers for a great day of competition. The top prize was won by Mal Lloyd and Mary Williams, with runners-up Daphne Reed and Yvonne Walsh. Winners of the first round losers section were Russell and Pat Digby. Shane Burke’s team successfully defended their championship fours title in last Thursday’s final. Joined by Ross Ward, Mal Lloyd and Paul Baker, they had a strong win over Garyth Williams, Ralphe Rickman, Stewart Black and Graeme Yeoman. Next comes the A singles, for which entries are now open. With all the recent bowls activity, Tuesday’s numbers were down for men’s pairs. The winners were John-Paul Sengers and Walter Zemler. Wednesday ladies’ prize went to Judith Boakes, Valerie Bush and Lis Thomson. George Manera and Bill Roberts were Friday jackpot pairs winners, with second place taken by Ralphe Rickman and Gill Macdonald. John ChaningPearce, Frank Turton and Beryl Small took the Saturday triples prize. Next Saturday has Section 5 Bronze Super Challenge playing away at Nambour with the Section 8s at home to Solander Lakes. - The Chalker Pomona Bowls WEDNESDAY ladies played triples and pairs with the pairs team of Linda McDougall and Gaye Bible winning on the day. In Thursday mixed pairs, the win went to Maree Hodder and Walter Horn.
We need more players for our Thursday afternoon games. Friday afternoon bowls has certainly become a very popular game with plenty of eager players on the green. Winners on the afternoon were Norm Walmsley and Keith Muir, with runners-up Col Carruthers and Bill Alford. The jackpot was not won so put your name down for a chance at winning the pot. On Saturday, our men’s Super Challenge team travelled to Kandanga with high hopes for another win. Unfortunately this did not happen and although all the games were very close none of our teams got up and Pomona went down 5-0 to Kandanga. Look forward to a better result next week at home against Kenilworth. - Kitty and Jack Cooroy Bowls THE players are back on the green and having fun and enjoying the cooler days and evenings. Tuesday jackpot pairs winners were Julie Ainscough and Noel Gilvarry having two convincing wins. Runners-up were Geoff green and Casey Claydon. The business bowls sign on evening was a great success. Formal play commences this week at 6.30pm. High Rollers also started their season of play on Thursday night. Twelve teams competed and JeLS, TAG Team, Eumundi Boys, 101s, Night Owls and Royal Flush had wins. The Hinterland Challenge men’s team had three wins and a loss against Woombye at home. The ladies lost both of their games against Palmwoods. Both the ladies and men play at home this week. - Julie Ainscough

CALLING all golfers ... the under-15 Dolphins rugby team will be hosting a golf day at the Noosa Golf Club, in conjunction with SPM Law, and they’re looking for players. The team is hoping to raise funds for a trip to New Zealand in June where players will develop their skills in junior rugby. The golf day is an excellent opportunity to network with peers, entertain clients, or just have a great day hitting
a few rounds with friends. The event is a four-person ambrose, where each person takes a shot and the best shot is selected, meaning every level of golfer can enjoy the day. Those without official handicaps will be allocated a temporary handicap on the day. The event will be held on 27 March, with all entries and payments to be received by 18 March.
The cost is $100 per person or $380 for a team of four, with 18 holes of golf, a light lunch, post-game platters and prizes included in the cost. Registration on the day is from 11.30am with a shotgun start at 12.30pm and celebratory drinks and presentations will start from 5pm. This event is kindly supported by SPM Law. Email msobey@spmlaw.com.au to register or for more information.

The world’s oldest competitive surfer for the last dozen years of his life, Magoo often gave away 10, 15, even 20 years to his fellow competitors, always a worthy adversary and a pleasure to share the line-up with. But, despite his jovial and spritely exterior, Magoo was quietly fighting a battle for his life. Diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 2010, he continued to surf whenever his treatment allowed, his dedication to yoga (he stood on his head for 10 minutes each day) helping him through the toughest of times. Magoo finished third in the over-70s division at last year’s Cricks Noosa Festival of Surfing, but by spring his strength was waning, and he passed away at his NSW Central Coast home in November, wife Debbie by his side. In memory of this inspirational surfer,
the 2015 Cricks Noosa Festival of Surfing will host the inaugural Magoo Memorial Men’s 70 and Over division, with Debbie McGuigan donating a week’s stay at the Magoo Surf Lodge on Arrawarra Headland to the lucky winner. The festival’s opening ceremony paddle-out at dusk on Saturday 7 March will also be a Magoo memorial this year, with Magoo’s surfing buddies from around the world invited to participate. Sponsors line up Iconic Sunshine Coast surf brand Beachbeat will sponsor the Logger Pro at this year’s festival, with sunglasses brand Maui Jim taking over naming rights to the Women’s Pro event. The two professional divisions will join the Golden Breed Noserider at the pointy end of proceedings, with more than 120 entrants from around the world already filling the festival’s headline events. Festival director Phil Jarratt said he was thrilled to welcome new sponsor Maui Jim and to welcome back Beachbeat, one of the pioneer brands that helped get the festival up and running back in the ’90s. Anglers find river a haven By JACK MANGROVE NOOSA’S offshore anglers have had to spend most of the last week within the confines of the river as the offshore conditions were difficult. Anglers were faced with winds of up to 30 knots as well as large two-metre-plus swells – so even the larger craft where left on the trailer. Sunday morning was the best of the week but with conditions still a little lumpy, offshore angler had to make the best of the conditions and stuck more to the inner reefs. Sunshine Reef again was one of the most popular for a bottom bounce with trout and sweetlip on the menu. Out at Massoud’s Reef Trekka 2
boated moses perch, venus tusk fish, cobia (dropped at side of boat) and quality pearl perch. In the river, the good old whiting where happy to take yabbies, prawn and worms along the dog beach and Gympie Terrace. Bream were also in the same area and there were a couple caught with a bit of size to them. Around the Noosa Sound, tailor and tarpon have been crashing into surface lures in the low light periods morning and night. Trevally have also been in the mix, herding baitfish schools to the surface and feeding. Further upriver, the flathead have been on the chew around the first ski run as well as the entrance to the first lake.
Up between the lakes, mangrove jack have been feeding hard, with prawn profile soft plastic a real winner. While you are up river make sure you lob the crab pots over the side, fresh mullet and a good long soak should see a couple of nice bucks in the pot. In the fresh water, bass have been on the chew in Lake McDonald around Three Ways, Bass Bay and along the weed edges first thing in the morning. They are also responding well to swimbaits and hardbody lures in the deeper water during the brighter part of the day. On behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures.
