DOUBT over WorkSafe’s full relocation to Geelong has emerged after State Government failed to guarantee the transfer of all the agency’s 550 positions. The Independent asked whether all 550 would be relocated but a spokesperson said: “The Government is committed to the relocation of WorkSafe to Geelong. There will be no job losses.

to “weasel out of its commitment. The relocated 550 jobs were touted before the election as worth $50 million to Geelong’s economy. Reducing it to 300 jobs would cut $20 million from the economic benefit. WorkSafe has also been included in a Geelong-based Australian Injury and Disability Insurance Network (AIDIN) with

TAC and National Disability Insurance Agency, which also have offices in the city. Committee for Geelong chief Rebecca Casson said she had written to Finance Minister Robin Scott about the importance of Worksafe to the AIDIN’s future. “The relocation of the whole of WorkSafe would be important in including it into the network, Ms Casson said. The doubts grew last week after the Independent reported a review of WorkSafe and the TAC could water down the bipartisan election commitment to the relocation. WHO WOULD have thought Geelong’s city centre, empty as a pauper’s pockets for so long, might be finally starting to rev up - and as an entertainment precinct? For years the Little Malop St arts precinct has been in name only, a cannon could easily be shot along it of a weekend without hurting anything more than tumbleweeds. Suddenly, however, music’s talking off there as new bars open and bands start pumping. Punters will now find the old faithful Eureka but also Pistol Petes blues cave, the new Geelong Workers Club, a piano bar about to open, Beav’s Bar and its regular tunesmiths and reports of another music venue being resurrected around the corner in James St. Throw in a few pop-up evening bars and smart cafes and it’s looking like there’s some life in the old girl yet. FAREWELL to Bernie Slattery, well-known former Geelong journo, news snout for the Indy after leaving town and an all-round good guy. He was also a one-time moderator of Australia’s most widely read blog and also successfully operated one of his own for many years.

Slats passed on to a higher masthead this week after a lengthy battle with cancer. TODAY’S Friday the 13th, a day for all things superstitious. Double Take’s tips to watch out for include: Cunningham Pier breaking apart and slipping into Corio Bay on top of an unannounced visiting cruise ship; Cats training - cancel it or risk a repeat of last year’s catalogue of knee woes; and a Zombie apocalypse in the mall. Hold on, that last one might already have happened. AND WHO was the Geelong artist whose work featured recently on TV’s top-rating The Block? The giant feather-crested native American figure made for an arresting wall display but, shhh, he can’t say too much about his work, according to family minders. Something about commercial reasons. Curious. First time we’ve ever struck an artist unwilling to talk about his work. Hoped we haven’t been framed.

WorkSafe doubt From page 1 “We would like to see as many of those jobs coming to Geelong as possible but clearly any new government would want to do a review to make sure the two organisations are aligned. “If there are some opportunities to work better and smarter that would be something that would come out. “The government will make the right decision because the TAC move was an outstanding success.” Ms Casson said despite the review being scheduled for completion mid-year, she did not want to see any delay in the relocation. Any relocation shortfall could also affect three proposed office building projects seeking to accommodate WorkSafe as a tenant. The proposals are for a 12-storey office building on the Kings Funerals site in Myers St, a $120 million nine-storey high-rise on the Carlton Hotel car park and another building on the corner of Malop and Gheringhap Sts. A Kings spokesperson hoped the full contingent of WorkSafe staff would move to Geelong. “We’re continuing to pursue the WorkSafe option and waiting for the expression of interest to be released, outlining what WorkSafe is looking for in terms of office accommodation.”

MORE cruise ships are bypassing Geelong because it lacks a wharf for passengers to disembark. P&O Cruises this week announced new first-time destinations at Mornington and Portland, putting the “picturesque Victorian towns on the cruise map”. The cruise line will make five calls to the Mornington Peninsula and seven to Portland over the next 12 months, injecting almost $5 million into the local communities. The regional visits later this month were part of the leading cruise line seeking to open more regional destinations, a Carnival Australia spokes-

person said. “P&O Cruises will have five ships based locally enabling us to take our guests to new destinations around the Australian coast,” the spokesperson said. “Cruise lines consider a wide range of factors when determining their ports of call including the appeal of the destination to passengers, the attractions it offers, local tourism infrastructure and proximity to other ports in the schedule. “P&O Cruises is adding Portland and Mornington Peninsula to its schedules this year as both ports offer easy access to some memorable attractions and activities, from local wineries to sightseeing on the spectac-

ular Great Ocean Road, which we believe will be popular with our guests. “Our itineraries throughout the Pacific region feature a mixture of ports with and without wharves. Whilst it is not unusual to drop anchor and use tender boats to carry passengers ashore, it is unquestionably faster for passengers to disembark at a wharf.” Cruise ships visiting Geelong previously have used a tender to ferry passengers ashore. One of the most-highly rated liners in the world is slated to visit Geelong, with the sold-out five-star Marina arriving on Sunday. The Independent last month reported the Marina, on its maiden voy-

More home for less.

age to Geelong carrying 1250 passengers, was a major coup for tourism operators. But the city’s cruise season was dealt a blow when Seaborn Odyssey abandoned a one-day stopover last month due to bad weather causing delays to its schedule. However, it will bring its 450 passengers to Geelong on 21 February. Cruise ship visits to Geelong have fallen from a high of nine in recent years to three this season. Mayor Darryn Lyons told the Independent he was working hard to get more cruise lines to Geelong. Securing the Marina’s visit added weight to his push for a dedicated cruise ship pier, he said.

Alleged bullying victims fear recriminations

Too afraid to speak up CITY Hall workers are afraid to speak out about bullying to an in-house inquiry for fear of further recriminations against them. Workers have told the Independent they do not believe their complaints will remain confidential and cite earlier incidents of payback. Speaking on condition of anonymity, one worker said staff would prefer an independent inquiry into the bullying allegations - not one run by the

organisation that has promoted and entrenched the bullies. “They’ll already have a list of who’s who,” the worker said. “They’ve done that before during EBA talks, an unwritten list, and people have been intimidated and bullied. “I know of at least two people who would definitely say something to the inquiry if they believed there would be no repercussions but they’re just not sure.” Australian Services Union (ASU) last week called for State Government

to oversee a fully independent inquiry into allegations of institutionalised workplace bullying. “Serious bullying is rife...it starts from the officers and goes right through the organisation,” ASU Victorian and Tasmanian branch coordinator Billy King said. Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins has demanded a councilrun mediation and a review of its code of conduct. “The funny thing is an email was sent out by the CEO (Gillian Miles)

Aces wanted PATRONS will try to ace a world record when Geelong’s Motor City Music Festival serves up 100 totem tennis poles. Organiser Hugo T Armstrong said he would put his tennis balls on the line with the record attempt on the festival’s family-friendly ‘Funday Sunday’. “We want to attempt a world record for the most people playing totem tennis at the same time. We’ll have 100 poles and we want mums, dads, kids, grandparents, everyone to front up and hit their way into the record books.” Mr Armstrong said other Funday Sunday attractions alongside live music would include a craft beer hall, cider and wine bars, food trucks, a children’s stage, free carnival rides and historical displays. “And kids are admitted free,” he said. Festival tickets are on sale at motorcitymusicfestival.com.au.

A GAS exploration company might begin exercising its permit covering part of Geelong and the Surf Coast, according to environmentalists. Lock the Gate’s Chloe Aldenhoven said the boss of Lakes Oil, which counted “magnate” Gina Rinehart as a shareholder, had reportedly said the company would “move the focus” of its operations to southwest Victoria.

Coles closer A NEW Coles supermarket cleared its last major hurdle after winning the support of an independent panel. Geelong councillors this week agreed to seek a planning scheme amendment for the supermarket after the panel reviewed 16 submissions in support of the store and four against.

Mayoral review A REVIEW of Geelong’s mayoral election process must be completed before the next council elections in 2016, a Liberal MP has told state parliament. Member for Western Victoria Simon Ramsay said the existing system, which his previous coalition government introduced, had “been found to be wanting”.

Firebug fears FIREFIGHTERS are alarmed a 15-year-old serial firebug has been repeatedly allowed back on Geelong streets. Their union expressed concern after the teen, with 130 priors, was released from custody last week before lighting a fire at Corio two days later.

Bubs booming GEELONG Hospital has opened a new specialist care nursery to cater for a baby boom across the region. The $3.8 million nursery has boosted cot numbers from 13 to 20 as 600 babies are born in Geelong a year.

Royal flush GEELONG Mayor Darryn Lyons was right royally flushed with pride yesterday when he received a thank-you note from Buckingham Palace. “The Queen has asked me to thank you for your kind message of Christmas and New Year greeting,” her private secretary office director wrote to the mayor.

Train scare DOORS flew open on a V/Line train in Geelong yesterday, according to a passenger. Barwon Rowing Club president Samuel Craig posted on Twitter that the 15.20pm service also lost power in the incident, which he described as a “bit dangerous”. Locally Owned and Operated

TENNIS in Geelong is in critical need of restructuring, says a major report to Geelong’s council. The sport’s governance in the region was “disjointed” and the mix of court facilities was “deficient”, the report said. Players were increasingly preferring a pay-asyou-play model rather than joining traditional tennis clubs. A survey of participants showed 66 per cent preferred to pay for play rather than join a club, the report said. The mix of facilities needed urgent review because of a lack of large community venues and too many local and public-access courts, it said. Registered tennis players across the region declined 22 per cent in the two years to 2012/2013, with only six Tennis Victoria-affiliated clubs reporting more than 100 members each. A new affiliation model for Victorian clubs, based on the number of courts rather than members, had increased memberships slightly to 2986. The region had 105 venues and 402 courts, the report said. “While the number of courts in the region is high, the mix of facilities is deficient in large community venues and over-serviced with local and public access venues.” Geelong had only one regional-scale venue with 16 plus courts - Geelong Lawn Tennis Club. A proposed strategy recommended new courts predominantly at Armstrong Creek but said upgrades to existing facilities should be a priority. “A select number of existing venues with limited organised activity or residential catchment are also recommended to be decommissioned,” the report said. Tennis in the region needed a collaborative management model to develop competition, administration, player pathways, event support, coaching, schools coordination and club growth. Investment in tennis court lighting was critical to increase participation, the report said. The report estimated $2.5 million was needed to develop tennis facilities. Councillor John Irvine, who holds the portfolio for Sport and Recreation, said the strategy aimed to make Geelong Victoria’s fastest-growing and most accessible region for tennis by 2025. Council is accepting feedback on the strategy at geelongaustralia.com.au/yoursay or customer service centres until 27 March.

but there’s no mention about the State Government or reporting back or anything,” another worker told the Independent. “It’s like they want to keep it all in-house.” The Independent has been told of confidential settlement in which workers claim they were denied WorkCover care and harassed from their jobs. Councillors have also complained of bullying, including incidents of “eye-rolling“, “snide remarks“ and loss of responsiblities for portfolios.

ON WATCH: A security guard patrols City Hall after the alleged threat to kill Mayor Darryn Lyons. Picture: REG RYAN

A BREAKWATER man will be charged by summons with allegedly threatening to kill Geelong Mayor Darryn Lyons in an incident at Market Square last Friday. The man, believed aged in his 40s, was interviewed after presenting himself to Geelong Police Station this week. Security staff have been deployed at City Hall following the incident. Geelong Magistrates’ Court issued an intervention order against the alleged offender in relation to Cr Lyons. Police told the Independent the man was a figure known to police.

“We’re looking at a range of offences from threats to kill or seriously injure, that’s one of the things we’re looking at,” a police officer said. “We’ll go through the process, the brief has to be authorised for prosecution. Once that happens we’ll issue the summons.” The man allegedly confronted Cr Lyons while he was selling copies of The Big Issue in a promotional event on Malop St. The alleged assault against Cr Lyons followed an attack on his Home House nightclub in the city centre last June when three wouldbe arsonists tried to throw a flaming petrol container through a window.

Trucks through city centre:

‘Ring road key’ By NOEL MURPHY TRUCK traffic will only begin clearing out of central Geelong with a “significant capital investment from the State Government”, according to deputy mayor Michelle Heagney. “And this means the next stage of the ring road,” she told the Independent. The proposed next stage of the ring road would link Surf Coast Hwy with eastern Geelong, giving trucks an alternative to travelling through the city centre. City Hall began a 12-month trial banning trucks from Malop and Mercer Sts last March. But the trial prompted an outcry from

residents of Ryrie and McKillop Sts as they contended with a subsequent increase in truck traffic. Cr Heagney wanted trucks out of Ryrie and McKillop Sts as well to help the city area’s revitalisation efforts. But she said VicRoads was the responsible authority for the four available heavy-truck routes through the city: Ryrie, McKillop and Fyans Sts and Breakwater Rd. “To make changes, we’ve got to get VicRoads to agree and we want to support businesses on the east side of the city. We’re working with VicRoads on how to utilise the best road networks to support those businesses and jobs

that rely on truck movements as well as supporting residents.” Regional director William Tieppo said VicRoads was awaiting data from City Hall monitoring of vehicle and transport movements through Geelong. VicRoads would use the information “to inform an economic assessment on the different options, including the impacts on the transport industry, commercial activities and the local community,“ he said. “At this stage it’s too early to draw conclusions about the longer-term solutions for alternative east-west freight movements.”

Chopper flights in Lara war By NOEL MURPHY

CLASSIC: Russell and Wayne Houston with 1967 Mustang Eleanor. 134428

Picture: REG RYAN

Mustang Eleanor’s new look gives Russell a rev By NOEL MURPHY MUSCLE cars just don’t come any better than Russell Houston’s Mustang. The name of the classic car’s a bit odd, Eleanor, but blame actor Nicholas Cage - that’s the moniker he gave his iconic ’67 Shelby Cobra GT 500 in the movie Gone in 60 Seconds. One listen to the deep guttural growl of Mr Houston's Eleanor, though, and any notions of a soft, demure female are forgotten - this gal has mean streak that’s 347-cubic-inches thick. Ballarat Mustang specialists Chris and Tim Griffin brought Eleanor out from the US two years ago, upgrading her from a regulation 289ci and standard red to a metallic grey and black-striped splendour at a substantial fee well into six figures. The result is stunning and unlike the numerous Eleanors trashed in Gone in 60 Seconds. No airborne Hollywood flights of fancy

MAKEOVER: Eleanor looks good inside and out. over trucks and traffic, no wild police chases, or nitrous kits for this machine. “This is really for my wife, Sue,” said Mr Houston, who lives in Highton. “She’s a fan of Gone in 60 Seconds and said if I was going to get a car it had to be a Mustang."

Mr Houston has insured Eleanor for $200,000 after buying her from the Griffins two weeks ago. He will display her for the first time during Sunday’s All Ford Day at Deakin University’s Waurn Ponds campus. Eleanor came from Las Vegas, Mr Houston said, so she was "a

desert car, no rust". "It’s very hard to find bodies like these and they needed a very straight car with a good body.” The result, a gleaming, growling road-registered beauty, is all chrome, stainless, steel and custom fittings - and flawless right through to the two-pac red oxide underneath. Chris Griffin said Mr Houston’s Eleanor went through the “full rotisserie”, affecting "every nut and bolt, including a right-hand-drive conversion and built with 99 per cent accuracy to the movie Eleanor”. “The externals were all automatically picked out but inside is somewhat customised with a highend sound system, reverse camera, specially-made door panels and leather seats - there’s lots of nice stuff,” Mr Griffin said. “When you start her up she gives you that little rumble in your chest, it’s a pretty exciting sound. "It’ll cause a number of accidents in Geelong, I’m sure.”

HELIPAD plans have Lara residents up in arms with noise concerns. More than two dozen angry neighbours of Jamco’s Mills Rd premises have lodged 11thhour objections to the choppers with City Hall. They accused Jamco of at least two illegal flights already and called for infringement notices. “This belongs at Avalon. It’s as loud as hell and people are as angry as can be,” protester Frank Chalifour told the Independent. “From a safety standpoint, this flies right over trains, schools, homes, sporting grounds.” Jamco’s operations involve building electrical panels that are transported to terminal stations around Victoria. The company stores equipment and machinery including shipping containers and trucks on the site. Jamco proposes to use its helipad two or three times a week during daytime only. But residents fear more flights and that City Hall lacks authority or resources to ensure Jamco conforms

with its permit. Mr Chalifour said misinformation circulating in Lara suggested emergency services such as the SES, CFA and air ambulances would use the helipad. Jamco spokesperson Lorna Holland said the company never issued such advice and rejected safety fears. “We have an air operators certificate that’s been issued to us by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority and within any job you need to do a risk assessment. We do that, we’re not obliged to notify CASA every time we fly a helicopter,” Ms Holland said. “We have to abide by CASA’s laws. We have a risk assessment for the property, we have a helicopter landing site assessment for the area, we only use qualified pilots, we’re the holder of an air operators certificate and we abide by that. “With noise, we’ve just had a second assessment by an independent acoustic consultant and we’re awaiting the results.” Ms Holland rejected Mr Chalifour’s claim of two unauthorised flights, saying authorities had approved them. The helipad application is before the Geelong’s council.

‘Secret’ rezoning in black hole By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN GEELONG’S council faces a multimillion dollar black hole to develop sites at Lovely Banks after the former state government planning minister secretly rezoned the land. Lovely Banks was identified as a long-term growth area but Mathew Guy, now opposition leader, rezoned it suddenly in the lead up to November’s state election.

A report to council said the rezoning went ahead without notice to council or public consultation. Mr Guy used his powers of intervention in October to prepare, adopt and approve the rezoning from Farming to Urban Growth zone, the report said. Council would now have to undertake a financial analysis to ascertain the cost of making land available in the newly rezoned area.

The report said an indication of the potential expense was council’s pending costs of $19 million for infrastructure in subdivisions at Armstrong Creek and Clifton Springs. The Armstrong Creek costs ommitted a planned library and aquatic centre and indoor sports facility, likely to cost another $20 million. Council also faced significant investment in infrastructure in multiple growth fronts across Geelong at Lara, Leopold, Ocean Grove and St Leonards.

The report said the land at Lovely Banks suffered “constraints including a major south-west gas pipeline, the need for buffers to existing industry and the potential presence of significant grassland habitat. Lovely Banks and Batesford South were identified in a G21 regional growth plan as part of an expected population increase to 500,000 by 2050. But the report said Mr Guy omitted Batesford South from his secret rezoning

Cystic Fibrosis Victoria chief Karin Knoester said the organisation was seeking team and individual entries to host fundraising Big Bounce parties or exercise challenges. “Bouncing is not only great fun and a great way to exercise, it also improves the quality of life for those with cystic fibrosis as jumping helps clear the sticky mucus in the lungs and airways which can cause infection, Ms Knoester said. “Trampolining every day is highly recommended for people with cystic fibrosis as the motion is great for keeping their lungs healthy and strong. We’re encouraging Geelong workplaces, schools, families and friends to host a Big Bounce party at home or at a local trampoline or gymnastics center to get behind the cause while benefiting from a great workout. Ms Knoester said registrations and more information for the fundraiser were available at bigbounce.org.au or by phoning 9686 1811.

and had never explained why he chose only Lovely Banks. Council agreed to ask the new State Government for funding to progress the planning and development of the area for schools, roads and public transport. The report said the development would also need greater state investment in Geelong’s economy to grow the employment base so new residents at Lovely Banks could live and work locally.

By NOEL MURPHY TRUCKING noise problems at Lara appear set to be eased with the relocation of Rocke Brothers’ operations to an industrial estate at Corio. Hundreds of trucks have been travelling into Josie’s Transport depot around the clock since the company sold off part of the 1.5-hectare site to waterfront transport specialist Rocke Brothers. Last year residents complained to the Independent of “maddening noise from constant banging, crashing, crunching and revving through the night. A permit allowing container trucks on the site has been in place since 1994 but neighbouring residents said the situation was becoming unacceptable with more than 30 trucks an hour in the day and up to 110 at night between 9pm and 2am. City Hall sources this week suggested the transport operator was likely to soon move into the Heales Rd industrial precinct at Corio, removing the ongoing noise problems. Residents asked City of Greater Geelong to cut McClelland Ave’s 80km/h speed limit to 60km/h, fearing trucks could collide in poor traffic conditions. They cited slush, mud and dust from the trucks - plus financial loss trying to double-glaze windows against the noise - as additional problems from the trucks. Rocke Bros management told the Independent late last year it was looking at numerous alternative sites and planned to move elsewhere. This week it was unable to “confirm or deny a move to the Corio estate.

Stolen $1.65m put in Noddy’s

RELAX. I CAN COME TO YOU.

FAILED Geelong soft drink company Noddy’s received $1.65 million in stolen funds, Victorian Supreme Court has heard. Former Melbourne lawyer Alan John Munt was reported to have pleaded guilty to 26 offences as part of a $4.8 million fraud. Munt, 61, used the funds as part of a Ponzi scheme to prop up two businesses – Noddy’s and his own Emerald-based legal practice. Munt was charged with theft and obtaining property by deception between 1998 and 2009 when he took funds from clients under the pretence of a legitimate investment scheme. Apart from the $1.65 million he poured into Noddy’s Soft

Drinks, Munt was accused of spending another $1.1 million to maintain the Ponzi scheme. He was also accused of diverting inheritance money pledged to charities to bank accounts in his name. The court heard Munt turned himself in to the Law Institute of Victoria in 2009, with Victoria Police and Legal Services Board involved in the investigation before he was finally charged in 2014. The court heard Munt was motivated by greed and maintaining an outward appearance of success. He will be sentenced at a later date.

A Ponzi scheme is a fraudulent investment operation in which returns are paid to investors from new capital paid to the operator by new investors rather than from profit earned. Former Geelong business Chartwell Enterprises operated one of Australia’s worst Ponzi schemes. Chartwell collapsed in 2008 with debts of $50 million. Chartwell fraudster Graeme Hoy was sentenced to 13 years and nine months in prison after pleading guilty to 44 charges of obtaining property and a financial advantage by deception. His business partner, Ian Rau, was sentenced to 20 months jail for his role in the scandal.

IN DEEP: A researcher conducting a survey in the marine park.

A RARE predatory fish that grows as big as a man could be increasing in numbers off the Bellarine Peninsula, according to surveys. Parks Victoria chief Dr Bill Jackson said the surveys of Port Phillip Marine National Park had recorded “increased sightings” of the western blue groper. The protected, carnivorous reef-dweller can grow to 1.75m. The groper uses peg-like teeth to prize off and eat reef organisms such as urchins, molluscs and crustaceans. Dr Jackson said the surveys’ findings of “healthy fish and invertebrate communities” within the park were “good news”.

Elissa Friday

OOH, ITS Valentine’s Day tomorrow, and it falls on the weekend! It’s a great reason to celebrate, so why not dress up and have dinner with a loved one. Or maybe spend some time with family and/or friends. Or none of the above and just dress up anyway to find your Valentine. That is, if you want one in the first place. I went out seeking some bargain fashion ideas for anyone doing the whole romantic evening thing, a blind date, drinks, a barbeque or any other ‘thing’ they choose for Valentine’s Day. I popped into the MS Community op shop on Pakington St, Geelong West – it’s one of the many great op shops I frequent in Geelong. It’s incredibly exciting what you can find, plus the stock changes daily, so you can regularly find different items of interest. The range includes clothing, shoes, ornaments, hats and handbags, and classic vintage items from high-end stores, which are real snapper-uppers. I spent a whopping $7.50 on a gorgeous dark pink classic-looking dress with a matching neck scarf. The shop occasionally has sales with 50 per cent off all clothing, which only heightens the shopping excitement. Everything’s at wonderfully low prices, plus the money you spend goes to charity. To put together an entire outfit, I found stylish red trousers marked down from $6 to $3, and a subtle leop-

Write to us:

Letters Uphill battle for buses I WRITE on behalf of all the people in my neighbourhood who do not drive and depend on buses for public transport to go shopping, to doctors, churches and so on. Our bus is the number 35/36 on West Fyans St. Our new bus stop will be in Stinton Ave, which is one kilometre-plus away and all uphill. I would like to see to the members of the authorities proposing this to bring their elderly family members here to see whether they can do the walk uphill to catch the bus. We get told to use public transport and then they do this? Are they going to pay for taxis for disabled people to catch the bus? Betsie Prokop Newtown

Parenting by iPad I AM ABSOLUTELY mortified when I witness three to four-year-old kids carrying iPads under their arms instead of a doll or teddy bear. What's even more concerning is the speed and proficiency with which these kids operate iPads, suggesting long periods of wasted idle hours. Since when did this generation of parents become so lazy as to resort to a machine to babysit their children? This is an example of laissez faire, or lazy free, parenting at its worst. The iPad does nothing to develop creativity, imagination, motor development, academic skills, coordination, social skills or positive play and does very little for physical and mental health. This is why we now have a generation of kids addicted to this machinery. Wake up, parents, you are inadvertently destroying your child's development. Engage with your child, play with your child, talk to your child and, most importantly, listen to your child. Lock up the iPad now! Mary Bicanic Norlane West

Look back, go forward THERE’S been a lot of talk about Geelong no longer being able to base its prosperity on the old manufacturing economy. Who says we can’t? When you get lemons, make lemonade.

I am not a denier, just an advocate for plenary representation. R Huisman Belmont

Cats need reality check, not $6m cheque AS A ratepayer in City of Greater Geelong, may I say that if Geelong Football Club wants me to help stump up the $6 million, as mentioned in last week’s Independent, then it is on another planet. The cosseted little zone the club occupies has made it immune from what's going on in the Real World. Hello? We have 8.5 per cent

unemployment in Geelong and the Cats want us to take money from much more beneficial projects to gift $6 million to a wealthy football club? A severe reality check is in order, as is a dose of mea culpas for even suggesting such an outrage. Kevin Arthurson Drysdale

We could capitalise in a new way on the old way of doing things. Geelong could become an historical world capital of tourism for the old ways. We could reopen Ford’s assembly line with workers doing their jobs, all glassed in for the safety of visitors who could tour the plant and eat a worker’s meal in the canteen, all provided by former staff, who wouldn’t even need retraining. As a teenager I watched molten metal poured in a foundry, which was exciting. We could continue the Alcoa smelter the same way. The cement museum and works, too. Think what else. The old jobs are fascinating to watch but few get the opportunity. These projects would be the ultimate in environmental sensitivity – the infrastructure is already there. We’ve already done it with Deakin University’s waterfront buildings and the wool museum’s old carpet-making technology. Let’s make Geelong a working 20th Century mega tourist destination. M Scott Whittington

Millions wasted on climate THE CLAIMS by Gary Shepherd, Don Bartlett and Kevin Crough (Letters, 6 February) need to be challenged. Again, I make my challenge to debate climate change in a public forum to uncover the facts, The reason sceptics like me are concerned over climate change is that we see millions of dollars wasted on trying to solve a phantom problem. I refer to the allocation of $25 million by Sci-

Analogy gets a rise

ence Minister Ian MacFarlane to investigate carbon capture and storage in the Otways (Independent, 6 February). This money would have been better spent on drought-proofing Australia and addressing genuine environmental issues. Alan Barron Grovedale

Plenary debate left to go I HAVE tried to avoid involvement in the ongoing and unresolved climate change feud but lately climate change proponents have become quite desperate, resorting to vilifying anyone disagreeing with their apparently incontestable scientifically proven views. The derogatory term denier automatically invokes visions of stupidity, or a lack of intelligence. Such terminology can only weaken the proponents’ credibility when used to deride contributors. Anyone with reasonable knowledge of science has a right to voice their opinion. Alan Barron, for example, has more than a vague understanding of climate science, and his analogies are not only interesting but sometimes right on the money. Gary Shepherd and Don Bartlett should know it is not a betrayal of readers to represent Mr Barron’s contributions, or anyone else’s view on any subject. Rather, it would be a betrayal to omit or censor, denying us the opportunity to decipher information for ourselves. If the climate change agenda was solely controlled by proponents, imagine how many industries and essential employers would cease to exist. Energy, fuel, agriculture, manufacturing, every tier of our economy would grind to a halt. Our children and grandchildren would suffer most of all.

THOMAS Watson (Letters, 6 February) wrote that the oceans are not rising, which was simply incorrect. He provided an analogy of ice in a glass melting and making no difference to the water level. His example was wrong. Rising sea levels are caused by two phenomena: the expansion of oceans as sea water warms; and land ice melting. However, sea level rise has been curtailed by the volume of water retained in dams constructed over the past 100 years. This amounts to 10,800 square kilometres, equivalent to a 30mm higher sea level than would otherwise have happened. The correct analogy for Mr Watson is a glass full of water and a funnel full of ice dripping into the glass. Mark Ruseler Lara

Listen and follow I STRUGGLED to see the relevance of Thomas Watson’s letter. Of course sea level rise is not affected by melting sea ice. Nobody said it was. But what is starkly visible in our own cliff lines here in Geelong is a sea level that was seven metres above present levels during the last interglacial warm period when terrestrial ice sheets melted. We ought to be concerned but surprisingly Mr Watson isn’t. What is missing from the denial contributors is an attitude of wise precaution. Last week it was reported Earth might have already crossed four of nine ecological boundaries, each of which will most likely lead to a far less benign Earth. Given that our impacts are now so broad and unsustainable, we need increasing levels of environmental literacy at all levels in society. This means listening carefully to environmental scientists and implementing policy and lifestyles accordingly. Maybe we would be better served in this paper with a sustainability column in which experts contributed ideas to help us live more sustainably. That would be so much more informing and positive than the present fruitless climate science/denial cycle. Dr Ray Black Belmont

Mark’s all shook up over Elvis PERFORMING in Memphis was “something special” for Elvis impersonator Mark Anthony. But he’s still excited about coming to Geelong for the first time. “I can’t wait to get there,” Anthony told the Independent. “It’s a place I’ve often thought about going to.” Anthony played the home of Elvis – Memphis, USA – after winning the title of South Pacific Ultimate Elvis Grand Champion in 2007 and 2008. Elvis Presley Enterprises runs the competition. Since then he has performed around the world, including Elvis Week in Graceland for the past eight years during the anniversary of The King’s death. He cherished the experience. “Playing in Memphis is something special,” Anthony said. But the Adelaide-born entertainer still considered that Australia

had the best crowds, which he described as “louder” than any other country. “Being able to be home in Australia and play, it has another kind of spectrum because I’m home and I get to be me.” Anthony said he was an Elvis fan “first and foremost”, so he strived to make his two-hour show as authentic as possible for the audience. “A certain amount of respect comes across. I’m just another fan, I don’t think I am Elvis,” he said. After growing up playing in bands, Anthony said he had now gained a recording contract in the US for his original songs and was working on a country rock album, to be released later this year. “It was because of Elvis that I landed a recording contract – I thought my days were over.” Anthony will perform Elvis In Concert – I’ll Remember You at Geelong Performing Arts Centre on 27 February.

BROTHER-AND-SISTER duo Angus and Julia Stone have extended their 2015 Australian tour to Geelong. The Australian pair will appear at Costa Hall on 26 February after a series of sold-out shows across North America. Their latest album, Angus and Julia Stone, has received praise around the world. The siblings had stopped performing together so they could work on solo careers until renowned producer Rick Rubin reunited them to write and record the new album. The Stone’s previous album, Down The Way, included hit anthem Big Jet Plane, which was number one on radio station Triple J’s Hottest 100 in 2010. Rubin described the siblings as “truly unique musicians” who were “authentic and pure people who do things from the heart”. The Stone’s support acts include Sydney trio Little May, London’s Cloud Control and New Zealand R-and-B singer Jarryd James.

ON TOUR: Angus and Julie Stone.

Singh rides on By JENA MARINO FOR the first time in 15 years, the original line-up of hit Aussie band Taxiride is back with shows already booked. Frontman Jason Singh said announcing the reunion earned the biggest response he had ever received on social media. Singh said he had “missed the sound” of Taxiride. “We haven’t kicked back in a long time.” The rock band scored two consecutive number-one platinum-selling albums, an ARIA award for breakthrough artist single as well as seven top-40 hits including Get Set and Everywhere You Go. But before stepping out with Taxiride again, Singh will return with a three-piece backing band at next month’s Motor City Music Festival. In a change from last year’s set, Singh said this year’s show

WAITING FOR A RIDE: Jason Singh plays Motor City next month. Picture: JESS SHEPHERD would feature a greater acoustic emphasis although it would still be “quite a big sound”. With 26 gigs completed last month, including the Australian Open, Singh said he expected to have another big year after playing 244 shows across Australia with his backing band last year. “We’re on track to do the same amount,” he said.

“We’re one of the hardest working bands in the country.” Singh’s solo album, Humannequin, received high praise and airplay for songs such as Easy on TV and film production including Channel 7’s Million Dollar Minute and Australian movie John Doe: Vigilante. Sing said he was also in talks with various dance producers after tracks The World As You Know It and One World reached the top 10 on the ARIA Club charts. “I like dance music. I like all different types,” he said. “I was raised on Prince – he’s my idol.” Singh also planned to release in June another project, The Voices, with Mark Gable, lead singer from Aussie rock band The Choirboys. Singh will appear on the Sunday of the Motor City Music Festival on the March Labour Day long weekend.

FOUR young Geelong musicians will perform in a chamber music concert in the city centre on Sunday. Organisers said the four would join three other classically-trained musicians in An Afternoon of Music at Yarra St’s Wesley Church. The concert would feature the music of Mozart and Beethoven, helping the septet’s student members develop their skills. Former Christian College students and violinists Jamie Parker and Jessica Higgins had organised the event, the organisers said. Proceeds from An Afternoon of Music would help the musicians, mostly students, cover the costs of their concert, the organisers said.

THE LITTLE River Hotel might be under new ownership but the country-style venue with its charming atmosphere and oldfashioned friendly service remains. No surprise really, as new owner Kylie Trotter worked at the hotel as weekend manager, so she knows what patrons want from their watering hole. The hidden gem is set on an acre of land, so children have plenty of play space – there’s even a park across the road – while families enjoy the childfriendly setting indoors. The short trip to Little River

for the hotel’s steaks is well worth it, with grain-fed beef expertly transformed by steak specialist chef Trevor Riseley and cooked to each customer’s liking. Experienced Geelong pub chef Cale Maddison has added his culinary talents to the kitchen staff. A new menu is on the way but all the favourites will still be there. The pub has live entertainment on Friday evening and Sunday afternoon with local bands like Good Faces 4 Radio and JimJamz keeping patrons tapping their toes.

TRADITIONAL MENU ALSO AVAILABLE

Nestled conveniently between Lara and Werribee, Little River Hotel offers the best of both worlds, just a short walk from the train station so patrons can feel free to down a couple of drinks in safety. Patrons can catch happy hour between 6pm and 7pm Fridays and grab a ticket in the hotel’s social club raffle – it’s donated over $90,000 to various charities and community groups in the past two or three years. Little River Hotel is open for lunch and dinner seven days at 10-14 Flinders St, with bookings available by phoning 5283 1113.

Connecting people and communities

HEARING Aid Specialists Geelong has been a familyowned practice since 1991 but has operated on the same central city site in Yarra St since 1989. Locally owned, operated and staffed, the business takes great pride in helping people achieve their full hearing potential. Over the years hearing devices have become more advanced and able to provide wearers with better outcomes in a variety of listening situations. Along with the advancement in technology comes the need to accurately assess the performance of the hearing devices. Hearing Aid Specialists Geelong’s Marcel Timmers likens it to buying a sports car but then having it tuned by someone who either doesn’t have the right equipment or the experience to extract the correct performance. “It’s very important the devices are calibrated to the individual’s hearing loss accurately and also takes into account the individual’s needs,” he advises.

Hearing Aid Specialists Geelong’s Yarra St head office. Hearing Aid Specialists Geelong takes the time to understand clients’ needs and works with them to ensure that devices are not only tuned to their hearing loss but also strive to help them achieve their hearing goals. “Utilising a state-of-the-art hearing device analyser like the Aurical Real Ear Analyser, we can accurately assess the performance of your hearing devices while you are actually wearing them,” Mr Timmers says. “This allows us to take into account personal ear character-

istics, like the shape and size of your ear canal and pinna effect.” Hearing Aid Specialists Geelong has set aside some consultations for free assessments of hearing devices’ performance but places are limited. “We’ll give an unbiased report on how your devices are performing and make recommendations on how you might achieve your full hearing potential,” Mr Timmers says. Appointments for free consultations are available by phoning 5223 2770.

WINDOW film is an easy, affordable answer to reduce those energy bills and make your house more sustainable. Energy saving window film is one of the most effective passive solar devices available to home owners. Window tinting improves the energy efficiency of homes by reflecting, absorbing and re-radiating solar energy, helping to keep the heat out in summer, while some films are designed to retain heat in winter. Government and industry modelling has shown that for an average home, solar control window film can result in a 30 per cent drop in air-conditioner usage, equating to a 10 to 15 per cent reduction in your home’s annual electrical costs. Creating a consistent and neat external appearance, films allow natural lighting while reducing hot spots and reducing glare, in-

Torquay Tinting’s Vinnie Tabacco. cluding on television and computer screens. Views are enhanced and the general lighting within the home is softened. Privacy is improved, making life more comfortable year round. Window film blocks more than 99 per cent of harmful UV rays, not only saving furnishings

and floors from fading, but may also help residents prevent ageing, skin cancer and damage to their eyes. Window film offers far more value than many other products designed to reduce energy gain through windows. As a retrofit option, they work in easily with existing blinds, shutters and other passive solar devices. Films are environmentally friendly and offer a negative carbon footprint. Torquay Tinting’s Vincenzo “Vinnie” Tabacco is also a registered building practitioner whose positive approach toward helping the environment and improving the energy rating of client’s homes helped him win a CSIRO Passive Solar Award. GEELONG’S OWN

City to Surf Solar+ is a locally owned and operated business specialising in solar power. Using only high-quality products, City to Surf Solar+ has an experienced, fully qualified, Clean Energy Council-accredited installation team. New products available from City to Surf Solar+ include micro-inverters, battery back-up technology and Sanden Eco heat pumps for energy-efficient hot water. Micro-inverters are particularly useful for overcoming shading issues or when systems need to be spread over multiple roof spaces. they come with web-monitoring, which sends data to City to Surf

Solar+ to keep an eye on the system as well. the company now also has a working battery back-up system available to view. With the price of natural gas predicted to rise significantly in coming years, one of the cheapest and most energy-efficient ways to run a household is switching to all-electric, including hot water, and running it with a solar PV system. traditional electric hot water systems are less efficient and cost a lot of money to run. But a Sanden Eco hot water heat pump system uses approximately 80 per cent less energy than traditional systems and comes with a timer

so it can set to heat water during the day when the PV system is working. City to Surf Solar+ has installed more than 900 systems on local residential, commercial, schools and community buildings over the past seven years. City to Surf Solar+ provides excellent customer service and takes care of all paperwork to make the whole process as simple as possible. Prospective clients can inspect live systems in action at the business’s showroom at 3/34 Essington St, Grovedale, by arranging an appointment on 1300 348 847. The Tigers have had an up and down season, lacking the class to compete with the stronger sides, which showed last week when they were soundly beaten by North Geelong in an eight-wicket drubbing. But Grovedale is a proud club and will throw everything at its local rival to keep its season alive. Selections: ST JOSEPH’S v Lara, Leopold v GEELONG CITY, Murgheboluc v SOUTH BARWON, Grovedale v EAST BELMONT, Geelong West v NORTH GEELONG, Newtown & Chilwell v BELL POST HILL In division two, Newcomb & District and St Peter’s will play a virtual final as they fight it out for sixth spot on the ladder. The Dinos are sixth on 34 points but the Saints sit just one position back with 33. It’s been a strange season for St Peter’s, hav-

ing won five of its first six games but losing every match since, falling from first to seventh in just two months. Newcomb & District, on the other hand, has been on fire, returning to its best with two wins including an outright in recent weeks. It’s hard to see a big enough form reversal for both sides to change their fortunes in this game. Selections: TORQUAY v Guild St Mary’s, St Peter’s v NEWCOMB & DISTRICT, Alexander Thomson v ST ALBAN’S BREAKWATER, Waurn Ponds v HIGHTON, MARSHALL v Modewarre, Manifold Heights v THOMSON And in division three, Bell Park is making a huge run for finals action. Amazingly, it had just two wins after round eight but, after an outright and another win in the past two games, finds itself just five points out of the top six. With a tough but winnable game against Inverleigh this round, all eyes will be on the Dragons to see whether they can keep their form up and shake things up a bit. Selections: BELL PARK v Inverleigh, MEREDITH v Lethbridge, Corio Bay v TEESDALE, BANNOCKBURN v Winchelsea, Corio v SHELFORD, Little River bye.

Teen Curlewis boarder into North American top 10 By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN CURLEWIS snowboarder Mollie Fernandez has snared an unexpected top10 finish in her first NorAm Cup event at Canada’s Mont Tremblant. The 16-year-old was up against seasoned Olympic and World Cup snowboarders in the helter-skelter boarder cross event earlier this month. Mollie is training in North America as she prepares for the 2015 Junior World Championships in China next month. She has been based in Colorado since early December, training with Transition Snowboarding as part of her goal to compete at the youth Olympic winter games in February 2016 in Lillehammer, Norway. Boarder cross pits four competitors at a time on a short track filled with rolls, turns, jumps and banks. The North American Cup is an International Ski Federation tour ranked just below the Alpine Ski World Cup. Mollie’s mother, Jodie, said the event was “90 seconds of pure adrenalin”. “It’s hard competing against such a strong field but it’s good experience for Mollie.” Jodie said her daughter was enjoying being away from home and trying to keep up with her year 11 studies, including two VCE subjects, at Geelong College by correspondence.

SHREDDING: Mollie Fernandez carves up the North American slopes. Mollie qualified for the Junior World Championships with overall fourth in FIS Boarder Cross events at Mt Hotham last year. Mollie has held an individual scholarship at Barwon Sports Academy for the past two years and counts Rip Curl as a sponsor. Jodie said Mollie hoped to finish in the top 10 at the junior world championships so she could qualify for the youth Olympics. She will again compete in an Australia and New Zealand Continental Cup at Mount Hotham when she returns to Australia mid-year.

ON BOARD: Mollie Fernandez in between runs.

Fine time for fish PERSISTENT wind disappointed many anglers after a long-awaited forecast for fine weather last weekend. Desperate for a fish on Sunday, Fishing World’s Reece Pitt tried the Alcoa pier from his kayak with soft plastics. With plenty of fish showing on his sounder, his maiden cast caught a 40cm pinkie, the first of about a dozen, before further success on similar-size trevally and a couple of flathead. One if his colleagues, Kevin Hunter, fished the Wilson Spit area on Saturday when he battled wind against the tide. Kevin persisted for a catch of whiting to 38cm and a couple of pinkies around 1kg. Kevin also managed a few nice whiting around Point Henry. Adam Van Der Lught fished the grammar school lagoon from his kayak on Monday evening’s slack tide, catching pinkies to 40cm and a couple of flathead on soft plastics. Local club members travelled to Portland for an annual ANSA Convention last weekend, with fantastic captures reported - especially Wayne Trewin who hooked a large thresher shark on 8kg line. He caught the 60kg shark after a lengthy battle that also left him with four stitches from gaffing his leg instead of the thresher. An ANSA national record might be another consellation. Allan Lench might also earn an ANSA record after winning an extended battle with a 12kg school shark on 2kg line. Other notable captures were salmon to 3.5kg and whiting of 48cm. Back home, kingfish continued keeping anglers occupied, with plenty being taken around Port Philip Heads as well as offshore from Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads. Corio Bay also hosted small numbers of kings around Point Henry. Queenscliff Harbour produced silver trevally to 45cm on soft plastics, while anglers fishing the grass beds toward St Leonards caught whiting to 40cm on tenderized squid and pippies. Swan Bay offered some shelter from the wind, allowing anglers to score mixed bags including plenty of pinkies to 45cm, gummy shark, whiting and trevally. On the freshwater front, Lake Bullen Merri continued producing quality Chinook Salmon for anglers using pilchard fillets and glassies in berley trails comprising the bait used and tuna pellets. Some of the fish pushed 3.5kg and fought like demons. Lake Purumbete also fished well, with anglers soaking mudeye around the edges catching brown trout to 2kg. Wurdee Boluc Reservoir produced redfin and the odd trout on Fish Arrow soft plastics and Strike Pro Bob n Spoons. Send reports and photos to Chris at info@ raylongtackle.com.au or phone 5222 3257.

IN IT’S penultimate game of the season, Geelong Cricket Club faces a tough ask to claim the points over Northcote on Sunday. With tomorrow vacant for the Cricket World Cup match, the Cats will have to wait an extra day to resume their innings at 1/31 as they attempt to chase down 309 for victory. The bowlers did a reasonable job last week, and when they reduced the visitors to 8/211 they would have had high hopes of keeping them to a realistic target. But the Northcote tail wagged, putting on just under 100 for the final two wickets. Eammon Vines will resume tomorrow and will look to continue his good form, while he will need Hayden Butterworth to find some for the Cats to have any chance of winning. With two rounds remaining in Geelong Cricket Association, this season’s finalists are far from decided. Grovedale and Geelong West lurk just outside the top six and ready to pounce if any sides above slip up. Grovedale has a slight points advantage over West but faces a tough task when it hosts ladderleader East Belmont tomorrow.
