■ Vietnam War memorial M2A2 howitzer installed in time for Anzac centenary...

Big gun icon By JESSE GRAHAM AN EXPLOSIVE new Vietnam War memorial was set up in Mount Evelyn earlier this month. And although it is set to be opened in coming months, it has already drawn more than a few visitors. The memorial comes in the form of an M2A2 howitzer 105mm field gun, which formed part of the allied artillery forces in the Vietnam War. Though the cannon was installed in time for April’s centenary of Anzac Day, it will have plaques installed and be officially opened later in the year. Mount Evelyn RSL secretary and historian, Anthony McAleer, said the organisation had been working to get one of the howitzers to the town for about four years. He said that colleagues at the Dandenong/Cranbourne RSL had purchased one of the cannons in the past and had helped the Mount Evelyn group to get the cannon trucked down from Bandiana, near Wodonga. From there, the cannon was placed on an already-laid concrete slab and welded to secure its pieces in place. The final touches will come in the form of a plaque explaining the cannon and another in dedication to Vietnam War soldiers. “The howitzer is going to be a memorial to all of our Vietnam veterans who have lived in Mount Evelyn,” Mr McAleer said. The significance of the cannons is that, during the war, no Australian army patrols went into the jungle without either air support or support from howitzers like the one in the memorial. “It’s a strong connection, that these were there to protect Australian troops,” Mr McAleer said. “It’s an ideal sort of object to be used as a memorial.” Though he joked about the cannon being useful in intimidating rival football teams, Mr McAleer said it had been completely demilitarised,

Mount Evelyn RSL President and Vietnam War veteran, Roger Boness, said the new piece complemented the memorial garden, which also featured the town cenotaph. Mr Boness said the memorial had already been well-supported in the

community, including through a public ballot run through the Mail around two years ago determining where it should be placed. With the RSL also teaming up with local contractors and the Yarra Ranges Council through the project, he said the entire affair had been communitybased and community-run. “It’s been a mammoth effort allround,” he said.

“It looks quite at-place there.” Mr Boness said the cannons were a “telling factor” in some of the larger battles through the Vietnam War and that his job as a forward observer involved troops were always covered by artillery pieces identical to the one installed in town. “It wasn’t my job to fire the guns, but it was my job to ring them up and tell them where to fire,” he said.

“They had a significant contribution to winning battles.” This version of howitzer can accurately fire on targets 10 kilometres away. Though the Mount Evelyn cannon was constructed in the late 1960s, it was not used during the Vietnam War. A date for the official opening has yet to be decided, but Mr McAleer said it would take place after the Anzac Day centenary celebrations.

Torchlight shines for fireys By JESSE GRAHAM FIREFIGHTERS from across the hills and beyond will hold their bi-annual torchlight march later this month, and are inviting residents to witness the colossal parade. The Knox Fire Brigades group, which includes Ferntree Gully CFA and brigades through the hills, will be holding their torchlight march Firepower on Parade on Saturday 28 February. Beginning at 8.30pm, up to 25 fire brigades will march from the Ferntree Gully Fire Station to the Ferntree Gully Recreation Reserve, holding torches and accompanied by marching and pipe bands and trucks both old and new. The torches are lit, longstemmed open kerosene lamps and torches, and over 250 volunteer firefighters are expected to take part in the event. Event publicity officer and firefighter Graham Crichton said the event was a chance for firefighters to meet up, unwind and share a yarn, and for the public to thank them for their efforts over the fire season. He said the event involved a “mammoth” level of organisation, with preparations for the event running for the last six months.

“The Knox Group torchlight is one of the biggest in the state,” Mr Crichton said. “It’s an opportunity for firefighters from Victoria or interstate to simply get together and, in many ways, show their strength. “It’s a great opportunity for firefighters to get together afterwards, swap yarns and get something to eat together.” He said it was a new tradition at the event, which was held every two years, for the bands taking part in the march to gather at the end and perform Amazing Grace. Mr Crichton said the song had become a tradition in the 2009 torchlight, held shortly after the Black Saturday bushfires burnt over 450,000 hectares across the state, killing 173 people. “We were in two minds as to whether we should hold the torchlight, and we decided it would be a good thing to do, to give firefighters the opportunity to do something different and to get the weight of the world off of their shoulders,” he said. “It was the best thing that we ever did.” The song will take place after all the torches from the firefighters have been extinguished, and will be followed by a large fireworks display to

finish the evening. Emergency Services Commissioner, Craig Lapsley, will lead the Ferntree Gully march. Belgrave, Belgrave Heights/ South, Ferntree gully, Montrose, The Basin, Upper Ferntree Gully, Clematis, Selby, Sassafras/Ferny Creek, Olinda and Macclesfield will be taking part, along with other brigades from the group and Knox SES. Residents from the Knox area, the Dandenong Ranges and the Yarra Valley are invited to come along to the event and line the streets to watch the march. The march will travel from the Ferntree Gully fire station in The Avenue, along Station Street, Spring Street and Brenock Park Drive to the Ferntree Gully Recreation Reserve. The event coincides with National Red Balloon Day (NRBD) on 28 February, where a fund-raiser will be held for the Olinda Rural Fire Brigade at The Real Thing Craft Centre during the day. NRBD encourages people around Australia to tie a red balloon to their letter box or donate money to their local fire brigade, as a thankyou to firefighters in the community for their work over the year.

Briefly House raided, jewellery stolen

Twice the suspect

BELGRAVE police attended the scene of a burglary on Grantulla Road, Kallista, on Tuesday 10 February. Residents of the property returned home to find their house ransacked with multiple items stolen, including jewellery. The incident happened between 6am-7pm and police have not yet laid charges. Anyone with information is asked to contact Belgrave police on 9754 6677.

POLICE arrested a man over the weekend in relation to a local burglary. On stopping his vehicle in Lysterfield, police discovered that he was a disqualified driver driving an unregistered car. A search revealed that he was also allegedly carrying illegal fireworks. After being released from Belgrave police station, the same man was again picked up regarding a burglary later that day. He is allegedly a suspect in multiple local burglaries.

MOUNT Evelyn’s annual planning night will be shifting to April this year, featuring a special guest to workshop ideas for the town’s future. The annual Mount Evelyn Township Improvement Committee (METIC) Town Planning Day, usually held in January, has been moved to 12 April this year and will be run with a different format. Bank of Ideas director Peter Kenyon will be visiting the town to facilitate this year’s planning meeting, which METIC Minutes secretary Paula Herlihy said could take a different form. “It will be funded by the Yarra Ranges Council, in partnership with Mount Evelyn

community groups,” Ms Herlihy said. Mr Kenyon facilitated another meeting for the council in June last year, relating to the development of a Coldstream Community Plan. Ms Herlihy said that the Mount Evelyn meeting is likely to follow a similar format to previous METIC planning days, with community members and representatives discussing issues, before breaking into smaller workshops. With the addition of Mr Kenyon to this year’s event, Ms Herlihy said it would be a notto-miss event for people in the community. “For anybody who lives, works or plays in Mount Evelyn, or anyone with an interest

in Mount Evelyn, it’s a fantastic opportunity to have a worldclass person speaking,” she said. Though more details have yet to be confirmed, Ms Herlihy said the meeting was likely to take place at the town’s Yarra Hills Secondary College campus, as it has in previous years. The meetings generally draw between 50-100 community members, including representatives from schools, businesses and emergency services, as well as residents and children. The meeting will run from 9.30am-3.30pm on Sunday 12 April. More information on the event will be published in the Mail in the lead-up to the planning day.

While there is a cost and commitment involved in the surgery, the benefits of this procedure are many. Not only does it help with your pet’s future health and wellbeing, but de-sexing also goes a long way to helping the pet-overpopulation problem. At Animal Aid, we think every day should be Spey Day, and we encourage all pet owners to think about getting their pets de-sexed, not only your female pets but your male pets, too. preventing unwanted litters and unplanned pregnancies. This procedure can be performed from as early as three-four months of age at our veterinary clinic. Cats, in particular, can start coming into season and even fall pregnant as early as five months of age and a female kitten can often fall pregnant before she is even fully grown. Unplanned and unexpected pregnancies run the risk of problems during pregnancy, the birthing process and even after the kittens or puppies are born. In some circumstances, there can be a problem with the labour and an emergency Caesarean may be required. This often occurs in the middle of the night and is an expensive (minimum $1500-$2000) surgery which can put both your female pet and her future puppies or kittens at risk.

Natural pause By PETER DOUGLAS YARRA RANGES residents will need to wait longer before winning the green light to landscape their nature strip. At its Tuesday meeting, Yarra Ranges councillors opted to defer ‘The Guidelines for Nature Strip Landscaping in Yarra Ranges 2015’, so the document could be reviewed further. If passed, the guidelines, which took 12 months to develop, would provide scope for the landscaping of nature strips, which is presently banned within the shire. Deputy mayor Jason Callanan, moved a motion for deferral, citing confusion over allowances for residential letterboxes and large trees.

Legal service facing closure By JESSE GRAHAM AN ORGANISATION that provides free legal advice for domestic violence victims in the Yarra Valley may be forced to shut down in Healesville this year, due to government funding cuts. The Eastern Community Legal Centre opened its Healesville office on 18 February 2014, after receiving $750,000 in funding from the former Federal Government. However, The Mail reported last year that $400,000 of that money $200,000 per year funding for the 2015’16 and 2016-’17 financial years - had been pulled by the Abbott Government. The office, based in the Healesville Community Link, offers free legal advice on issues such as domestic violence and tenancy three days a week. ECLC CEO, Michael Smith said the centre provided an opportunity for those experiencing domestic violence to seek help, and that over 300 clients had been through the doors in the last 12 months. These clients included people from Healesville, the Upper Yarra area and as far away as Marysville. But Mr Smith said the organisation was now assessing its options, one of which could see the Healesville office closed after just one year. “The board is really keen to keep the service open and to keep it going, but it’s difficult without that Commonwealth funding and foundation to the service,” he said. “We hope to make a decision in April, or May, but we really need some certainty for staff. “It’s looking pretty serious for keeping it open.” The funding cuts, which occurred as part of last year’s federal budget, will come into effect mid-year. Casey MP Tony Smith told the Mail that he recently met with Federal Attorney-General, George Brandis, to high-

some works, within reason. “Basically, ratepayers are out there, maintaining nature strips now, but not really changing anything,” he said. “We must make sure we prevent a safety issue, or ensure accessibility, and is in keeping with the landscaping that is there.” Mr Wright said the guidelines offered some scope for creativity. “Nothing is ruled out, but an arrangement (of large rocks), wouldn’t be permitted. “That doesn’t mean someone couldn’t come up with an idea.” Mr Wright said the guidelines were broad enough that people only needed to look, which would take away the burden from having a permit or approval process.

Cr Callanan, who won unanimous support, argued the guidelines needed to be clear over these issues before it reaches the public consultation stage. Cr Len Cox agreed deferral was the best option. “In its present form, it’s a bit silly if we put it out, because it warrants being looked at further,” Cr Cox said. “The guidelines need more time before being released for public comment.” The guidelines are designed to address the many inquiries council receives annually from residents who want to improve their nature strip, or reduce maintenance. Yarra Ranges executive officer of Health and Local Laws Peter Wright said the guidelines would allow

Farming practices set for change By PETER DOUGLAS PROHIBITIONS around intensive agriculture operations in the Yarra Ranges may soon be relaxed. To help address changing farming practices, Yarra Ranges council will seek authorisation from Victoria Minister for Planning, Richard Wynne, to prepare and exhibit an amendment to the shire’s Planning Scheme. This amendment would remove the present prohibition on intensive animal husbandry in Green Wedge Zone schedules one, two and three. At council’s Tuesday meeting, Cr Jim Child moved the motion to seek authorisation, to which Cr Jason Callinan seconded. While the motion passed, some councillors urged this issue be treat-

ed with caution. Cr Fiona McAllister feared the change could leave the region susceptible to undesirable change in farming practices. “I don’t know if this will open up a flood of applications, but we should be cautious about opening the gate too wide,” Cr McAllister said. “There are no guarantees on the social impact and how this change will be managed. “We want to encourage the right type of farming, such as free-range.” Cr Len Cox also expressed fears over what changes this amendment may bring. “If someone opens up intense farming next door, I wouldn’t have thought that resident would be all

that happy,” he said. “You can argue that it’s a farming area, but people don’t want a large amount of noise and smell.” The issue of changing farming practices first came to council’s attention in 2014, after complaints were received about a free-range pork farm within an area where intensive animal husbandry is prohibited. Upon investigation, the issue of how to define this type of free-range farming became apparent. Cr Noel Cliff said the proposed amendment could result in positive change for the Yarra Ranges. “We are promoted as an agriculture region, as a place to grow and buy good produce,” Cr Cliff said.

Eastern Community Legal Centre's Yarra Ranges Co-ordinator Belinda Gillam Derry said that closing the Healesville office would hurt domestic violence victims. 134574 Picture: KATHRYN BERMINGHAM light the benefits of the centre. “I raised the geographical barriers faced by locals that inner-city and suburban residents do not have,” Mr Smith said. “I am continuing to make strong representations to the Attorney-General and other relevant ministers about the importance of the current services being provided in Healesville, as the legal service’s future funding model is determined.” A beacon of hope for the centre was revealed during 2014’s election campaign, when then-Shadow Victorian Attorney-General Martin Pakula visited Healesville to announce a Community Legal Centre Assistance Fund worth $2 million if elected. A spokesperson for Mr Pakula said that work was underway to ensure the assistance funds were “directed at priority service delivery gaps brought about from the Commonwealth funding cuts”. The spokesperson said the fund would be accompanied by $1.2 million for community legal centre family violence duty lawyers working at the magistrates’ court.

Marching orders for move-on laws By JESSE GRAHAM CONTROVERSIAL laws to move-on protesters are being repealed by the State Government, with Tecoma’s anti-McDonald’s group praising the move as a “win for democracy”. On Tuesday 10 February, AttorneyGeneral Martin Pakula announced that the Victorian Government would introduce legislation to repeal the former government’s controversial “move on” laws. Under the old legislation, five additional grounds for use of police’s move-on powers were added, meaning more people could be told to leave public spaces immediately or risk jail time. No McDonald’s in the Dandenong Ranges spokesperson, Garry Muratore, told the Mail that the new move was a “win for democracy”, and a repeal they had helped to campaign for. Though the laws were introduced after the Tecoma McDonald’s opening, Mr Muratore said if they had been around in the early days of the campaign, the laws might have quashed the group’s protests. “It had the potential that anybody holding a sign out the front could be asked to move on, and police wouldn’t have to give a reason - it was very repressive,” he said. “They could have basically just told us to move on, and anybody that ignored that order or who came back within 48 hours could be fined $900 – if they did it again, they could face jail terms of up to two years.” Mr Pakula said that, under the Summary Offences Amendment (Move-On Laws) Bill 2015, police would retain the ability to enforce offences such as trespass, be-

Opinion Fuel to burn THE Daniel Andrews Government has no plan and refuses to talk about prescribed burning in Victoria. The 2009 Royal Commission into Black Saturday recommended the State Government adopt a five per cent fuel reduction target. Considering the Andrews Government has not publicly stated their prescribed burning targets, a question was directed to the Minister for Environment, Climate Change and Water requesting the Government’s target.

The response: “normally those figures are articulated through budget papers.” (Hansard, 10 February 2015). The response will raise anxiety in the communities affected by fires in the past as we see a government not willing to commit to prescribed burning to protect Victoria. The Andrews Government must come out and explain why they have no target for Victoria - is it they don’t understand the impact, or don’t care? Brad Battin MP, Shadow Minister for the Environment.

setting and obstruction of roads and footpaths. Violent or unlawful protests would also still trigger police arrest powers and offenders can still be prosecuted, without the additional powers added by the Napthine Government last year. “The Liberal move-on laws were an extraordinary attack on the right of Victorians to have their say,” Mr Pakula said. “Victoria doesn’t need Bjelke-Petersen-style laws designed to silence dissent

and outlaw peaceful protests.” The legislation was introduced on Tuesday 10 February, but must pass the houses of parliament before the laws are repealed. Do you think the move-on laws should be repealed? Do you think this will help people to have their say, or be harmful? ONLINE shopping has taken Australia by storm in recent years, and is proving particularly popular in rural areas, where shoppers may live further than convenient from precincts or specialty stores. However, with online shopping now mainstream, it’s more important than ever to remain vigilant about cyber security, particularly with credit cards. Credit card fraud is one of the most common crimes in Australia today and can prove extremely damaging. It takes only minutes to drain accounts and offenders may be hard to trace. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) states that it’s important to protect yourself from credit card scams through simple but effective precautions. Never send money or give credit card details to anyone you don’t know or trust. Regularly check your

bank account and credit card statements when you get them, and report any suspicious activity to your bank immediately, choose passwords that would be difficult to guess and avoid using public computers to do internet banking. Never give out credit card details through an email or text message. Once you’ve contacted your bank, they can then hold your cards, send out replacements and investigate the transactions. After lodging a transaction dispute form, it is likely your money will be refunded if the purchases are found to be genuinely fraudulent and you have taken the necessary precautions to protect your details. Online shopping can be a great tool for picking up bargains and can save the hassle of trips to shopping centres. By following simple online safety precautions, you can minimise the threat of online fraud.

Memorial stirs a strong spirit of community

Cockatoo residents celebrate the development.

By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM THE community spirit present in the wake of the Ash Wednesday fires was again alive at a memorial over the weekend. Cockatoo community members gathered to commemorate the anniversary of a day that changed the town forever. It has been 32 years since bushfire devastated hills communities, the memory of that day still fresh in the minds of many. Cockatoo received worldwide attention in the aftermath of the fires when Prince Charles and Princess Diana visited the community kindergarten. The kinder is now the site of an Ash Wednesday memorial, and a 12-sided building to be used for reflection is currently under construction. Residents from Cockatoo and surrounds gathered last Sunday 15 February at Alma Treloar Reserve to pay tribute to those who lost their lives on the day. The focus was both on remembering the past and looking towards the future. Those present on the day wrote personal messages for the new building on pieces of wood, and were updated on the refurbishment of the building. The memorial is set to be completed in March this year.

EMO changes on hold By JESSE GRAHAM CHANGES to the Yarra Ranges Erosion Management Overlay (EMO) have been put on hold after a resident argued that the council hadn’t got their facts right. At the Yarra Ranges Council’s meeting on 27 January, councillors unanimously voted to delay a Planning Scheme Amendment for three months after a resident objected to the item. The amendment was to change the mapping of the EMO and would have resulted in 28 properties being removed from the overlay,13 being added and boundaries being adjusted on 31 other properties. It also would have introduced planning permit exemptions for minor developments, among other changes which a council officer’s report said would “simplify” the EMO. Properties across the Dandenong Ranges as well as Wandin North were set to be affected by the changes. However, a Silvan resident whose land was set to have the EMO cover it under the changes, spoke against the proposal and said his property didn’t fit the criteria to be under the EMO. The overlay aims to reduce the risk of landslip, and the resident displayed for the councillors photos of his land,

which appeared to be evenly-levelled. The resident said he had asked a geotechnical expert commissioned by the council when the last landslip would have occurred on the land, and was allegedly told “probably during the last ice age”. He said the proposal to include his property under the EMO was not supported by any below-surface geotechnical testing, and asked for it to be removed from the amendment. Councillors then questioned Yarra Ranges Council Director of Building, Planning and Health, Andrew Paxton, who said there was strong expert advice that the property be included. Councillor Fiona McAllister put forward a motion to delay a decision on the matter for three months, while the evidence was reviewed. “I think the issue around this property needs to be looked at again,” Cr McAllister said. “If we’re going to make changes and look at a planning scheme amendment, we have to be sure we’ve got this right ... and this property is a great case study to look at and make sure we’re making the right decision. The councillors unanimously voted for the deferment, with the item set to come back to council within three months.

Quilts the backing for CFA By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM KAREN Martin knows first-hand the important work of the Monbulk CFA. When they were called to her house to respond to an emergency several years ago, she found that many of the volunteers were former students from her days teaching at the local primary school. Wanting to support a community organisation, Karen held the first Monbulk Quilt Show 10 years ago. Since then, the show has become a favourite among locals and quilters as well as an essential fund-raiser for the Monbulk CFA. Karen runs “Mrs Martin’s Quilt Shop” and each year helps to organ-

ise the quilt show, which is to be held next month at the Living and Learning Centre. Featuring an impressive array of handmade quilts by quilters of all abilities, this year’s event will also include stalls, Devonshire tea, a sausage sizzle, plants, flowers, cakes, crafts and a free showbag on entry for the first 100 guests. All proceeds from the event are donated to the brigade. Each year the fund-raiser has helped the CFA to purchase and maintain essential services and equipment, including funding a mobile kitchen, new helmets and better lighting. This year the money will go towards storage. Karen says she is glad to be able to

give back to such a vital community organisation through the quilt show. “The CFA are volunteers that work really hard and do a lot of their own fund-raising, so it’s great to be able to support them through a community event like this,” she said. “We always get a great turnout for a fabulous day. It’s been a success every year so far.” The Monbulk Quilt Show will be held on Saturday 14 March from 9.30am to 3pm at the Monbulk Living and Learning Centre, corner of Main Street and Moores Road, Monbulk. (Opposite Woolworths) Entry is $5 per person and all proceeds will be donated to the Monbulk CFA.

Get set to race out-puffing Billy two years has been Sarah Klein from Moorooduc. Sarah is returning again this year and is aiming to become the first runner to win three consecutive races. “I’ve always enjoyed competing in the Great Train Race,” she said. “It has a quality field of athletes, the course is tough, which tests my fitness and you run through such beautiful surroundings. “One of my favourite moments is catching the train back to Belgrave once the race is over and having all the locals and volunteers wave at us as the train goes by.” Special Events manager Matt Col-

lopy said last year’s entries were fully subscribed within 10 days. “I encourage those people interested in running this year to enter as soon as possible via our secure website at www. puffingbilly.com.au,” he said. Proceeds will aid the restoration of the NGG 16 127 Garratt locomotive. The event is supported by Yarra Valley Water, Brooks, Active Feet and Gatorade. Entry fee for early bird entrants are adults $70 and children (13 - 16 years) $50. Early entrant deadline is Tuesday 10 March. Late entry fees for adults are $80 and children (13 - 16 years) $60.

and life in Kunwinjku country, the great plateau of West Arnhem Land. Museum director Maggi Solly said organisers were excited about this event. “The exhibition gives an amazing insight into the stories and traditions of West Arnhem Land,” she said. “These stories have been passing down knowledge for generations. “Stars and Symbols will also be passing on knowledge, from the artworks and experts on astronomy.” Entry is free. There will be kids’ activities, including a scavenger hunt through the museum. Hot food, cakes, coffee and drinks will be available from the Museum Harvest Cafe.

By JESSE GRAHAM A COMMUNITY market is being set up to re-energise and reinvigorate Cockatoo’s tourist appeal, with two residents opening the event early next month. The first Cockatoo Country Market will be held on Saturday 7 March in the car park outside the Cockatoo Community Hall. Organisers, Tanya Burmeister and Owen Deppeler, told the Mail that the market was set up to address a lack of tourist traffic through the town on weekends, compared to others towns in the hills. “We’ve noticed in this particular area that small businesses are struggling to survive,” she said. “This area is not really tourist-driven, so we’re hoping to boost that.” Enter the country market - the idea behind the event is to offer local businesses, artists and people from around the Dandenongs to sell their wares and create an attraction for visitors on weekends.

YARRA Ranges Regional Museum and Mount Burnett Observatory will be hosting a special evening about stars on Friday 13 March, from 5pm to 9pm. At the event, called Stars and Symbols, there will be telescopes, talks and access to the museum’s current exhibition, Myths and Legends of West Arnhem Land. This exhibition is drawn from the Yarra Ranges Shire’s McLeod Gift Collection managed by Burrinja Cultural Centre in Upwey. The collection of Aboriginal and Pacific art includes rare works on paper from Arnhem Land, created by one of the great Australian art dynasties, three generations of the Nganjmirra family. Drawings by Nawakadj Nganjmirra, Alex, Peterson, Ralph, Thompson and Wesley record traditional stories of creation, law

Tanya Burmeister and Owen Deppeler at the site of the Cockatoo Country Picture: JESSE GRAHAM Market, which starts next month. 134518 Ms Burmeister said she wanted the event to also strengthen ties in the community and that all profits from the market as it grew would be donated to notfor-profit groups in the area. “We’re hoping that, by doing this community market, it brings people out to socialise and strengthens the bonds of the community,” she said. She said the town had not had a community market in the seven years that she had lived in the area, and that she hoped businesses and residents in the community - both in Cockatoo and beyond would come on board with the idea. “When we moved here, we loved

this place – we love living here and love bringing our children up here,” Ms Burmeister said. “We want this place to have a bigger footprint.” The Cockatoo Country Market will be held on 7 March and on the first Saturday of each month from then on at the Cockatoo Community Hall. Stall costs start at $30 per market. For more information, or to book a stall, contact either Tanya Burmeister or Owen Deppeler at cockatoocountrymarket@outlook.com or call 5968 9678 or 0418 508 068.

YOU know, I think the James Bond franchise wishes it was still this awesome. Kingsman: The Secret Service stars Colin Firth as Harry Hart, an elite gentleman agent who recruits a rebellious youth, Eggsy (Taron Egerton), into the Kingsman secret service. Kingsman is an irreverent, boundlessly energetic and ridiculously entertaining tribute to old spy movies, but also has surprising heart. The characters are all nuanced and engaging, and Firth and Egerton have strong chemistry in a firm but caring mentor-protege relationship. This serves a compelling character arc for Eggsy, as Harry pushes him to take initiative and realise his potential. The humour is cheeky without detracting

from the drama, and the dialogue crackles with wit. We’re only in February, and Kingsman already features several of the year’s best action scenes. The effects are superb and the fight choreography is stunningly quick, brutal and creative, and director Matthew Vaughn keeps the camera far back and steady to properly show the actors’ moves (which is rare in modern action films). The villain Valentine’s rather on-the-nose radical environmentalism scheme is even in keeping with the film’s over-the-top Bond supervillain roots. For that matter, Samuel L. Jackson is clearly having a ball playing the joyfully crafty Valentine. The grim Daniel Craig Bond films have their place, but Kingsman: The Secret Service outshines most of them with fun and flair. - SETH HYNES

EAGER runners are being challenged to enter the 34th Puffing Billy Great Train Race on Sunday 3 May. This annual event will see Puffing Billy challenge up to 3500 runners over a distance of 13.5km through the Dandenong Ranges, from Belgrave to Emerald Lake Park. The race is one of the oldest and most popular events on the Australian running calendar, with runners pitting their fitness against the popular tourist icon. However, it’s not just the steam train that runners need to concern themselves with, it’s also the varying terrain of sealed and dirt roads as they traverse the hills of the Dandenong Ranges. Chop team for any job

Our business is growing because our customers are satisfied … we’re prompt, reliable and experts at what we do…

The team at Cut and Catch has spent many nights out in the storms, helping local families clean up after wild winds – some days spending 20 hours a day on the job. “We have 24-hour emergency call-out services and can help with any types of tree removal,” Matt said. “This includes pruning and bracing, mulching and stump grinding.” Cut and Catch is a small local company with friendly staff, a qualified arborist and is OHS compliant. Call Matt today for a free quote and experience the honest, reliable advice and service that Cut and Catch stands by.

AFTER more than seven years servicing the Dandenong Ranges and greater Melbourne, it’s no surprise that the team at Cut and Catch Tree Services are the first on many people’s minds when they need any type of tree removal. Owner Matt has worked in the industry for 14 years and prides himself on excellent customer service. “Our business is growing because our customers are satisfied – they know they can depend on our professional team to handle a wide range of services,” he said. “Our experts serve both individual home owners and businesses. “We’re prompt, reliable and experts at what we do.” There is no job too big or too small – and Matt and his team are equipped to enter the most difficult to reach places to ensure they get the job done. Matt has worked in the area for a long time and while the business is based in Emerald, his team travels throughout the Yarra Ranges. He has even worked with the head arborist at the Healesville Sanctuary and for many other wellknown companies. But it was time for Matt to go out on his own, and for nine years he has worked hard at providing a reliable local business to residents.

Two-wheel terrors THERE was plenty of two-wheel action at the Lilydale BMX Club recently when 300 riders from across Victoria and interstate came to ‘Conquer the Valley’. Club president Brecken Davis rated the event on Sunday 1 February as a huge success. “It was a fantastic day, with riders of all ages,” Mr Davis said. “Our youngest racers were the

mini-wheelers who were three and four years old, right through to our Vets in the 50-plus category. “It was great to see the mums and dads out there.” BMX is one of the fastest growing sports in Australia and is also an elite Olympic Sport. The Yarra Ranges region is lucky to have one of the world’s best riders in Josh Callan who began his BMX career at Lilydale at the age

of seven. Callan is now the Victorian State Team coach and continues to compete as one of Australia’s best riders. “The more senior members of the club, especially our teenage riders, are really looked up to by our younger riders,” Mr Davis said. “It’s great the way they mentor each other in training and on race days. It’s all about doing your best

and helping others along the way.” Lilydale BMX Club is hosting a Come and Try Day on Saturday 28 February from 10am until noon. There will be demonstrations, free coaching, showbags for all riders and a free sausage sizzle. For more information or to register, call Cassie on 0417 533 077, or email lilydalebmx@gmail.com or visit the club’s Facebook at www.facebook. com/lilydale.bmx

Lightning forces events spill over By JAMIE STRUDLEY EIGHTEEN Yarra Ranges Athletics athletes spent the weekend at Lakeside Stadium competing at the Victorian Junior Track and Field Championships. Only a few events were completed on the Friday night before 78 lightning strikes caused the program to be cancelled and rescheduled into the Saturday program. Highlight of the Friday night was a bronze medal for Ruby Dixon in the Under 14 girls1500m. Saturday produced many medals including gold medals to Lateisha Willis, Harrison Van Duuren and James Laven and bronze medals to Molly Dixon, Lateisha Willis, Chelsea Thompson, Georgia Lavenand Lily Peacock. Sunday was just as rewarding with gold medals to Lucas Taylor and Lateisha Willis, Silver medals

The little athletes sharpened up for next weekend’s Region championships with a “choose your event” day. An enthusiastic group of athletes made the most of wet but calm conditions to record some encouraging results. It is great to see our athletes in such good shape leading into the championship season. Put 28 February (not 28 April) in the diary.

IF THERE was one phrase Wandin Football Club’s vice- president Robert Bayliss would use to describe the club’s situation, it’s ‘what doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger’. After finishing fourth in 2012, third in 2013 and runners-up last year, Bayliss and his Wandin mates are excited over changes made in the 2014-15 off-season. This includes appointing three new coaches, and the signing of new players, which could lead the club towards premiership success in the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football League. Heading the new-look coaching panel at ‘the Kennel’ is Brett Fisher, a previous premiership coach at Seville and Silvan. His most recent coaching role was at Mooroolbark Football Club, where he coached them to successive finals series. Bayliss said Fisher would be a valuable acquisition. “Brett has a wealth of experience in football,” Bayliss said. “Brett is a great communicator that has gained instant respect from all at the club.” Joining Fisher is coaching debutante Geoff Bartling, who leads the reserves, while Julian Smith joins his brother, coaching the Under 18s. “Geoff is coming off a successful playing career at the club, he’s a great acquisition to develop our young list,” Bayliss said. “Julian, on the other hand, has had great success as a junior coach at Woori Yallock Football Club, coaching their Under 18s side to successive premierships (Division 1 and 2) in the past two years.” Also joining the club are Brad Harvey, who spent three seasons in the AFL with Brisbane, and Scott Dwyer, a former VFLlisted player. “Brad is an extremely talented midfielder-forward, while Scott is a tall, strong keyposition player,” Bayliss said. One key figure in the rebuild is former player-coach, Jarrod Bayliss. After stepping down from his coaching role, Jarrod has been labelled the player to watch this season.

Chelsea Thompson competes in the 100m at the Victorian Junior Championships over the weekend. Our “family fun night” will be held at Morrison Reserve - a night of games, competitions, a few races, sticky wall, jumping castle and more. Bring your friends, neighbours and family, get an “unlimited rides” ticket and go crazy having fun. Next week has no Saturday morning athletics. Our Little Athletics athletes will be representing the club at the Eastern region Track and Field Championships at Knox Athletics Track over the weekend. Come along to show your support for our little athletes as they compete for spots in the State Championships. New members of all ages and abilities will always be welcomed at the club. Check out the website at www.yarrarangesathletics.org.au for more information, results and training times.

WITH bulk drippy stuff falling from the sky early on Saturday morning at Emerald Golf Club, members huddled in the shelter waiting for a little dry to break out. Sure enough after a one-and-a-half hour wait the clouds rolled back to reveal a bonzer day. It was the first round of the three round Summer Cup and Ross Martin (11) continued some brilliant golf with 74 off the stick to record a par score of +7. He was also top of the A Graders. Allan Ecclestone (18) won the bikkies in B Grade on a countback from Peter Clowes (17) when both carded +6. Others to become involved in calculations were Philip Crossley and Steve Town +6, Mark Starick +3, Dean Shannon +2 and Mike Litchfield +1. Starick was nearest the pin on the 4th, Town the 7th, John Fisher the 12th and Litchfield showed how it should be done when he picked up the rewards on the 13th and the pro pin 18th. Daisy Mackey heads up the ladies’ division by being two points ahead of Irene Cranston with Cranston promising to bridge the difference. Wednesday’s Opulently Fabricated Golf (OFG) was a stableford event with a twist. After each three holes the stableford scores were multiplied to produce a score. It was Brian McCoy (33) who was the master of this format when he strode in with a score of 83, two ahead of the unlucky Graeme Fergus (18) on 81. Bobby Kennedy (23) had 58 points and Graham White (16) 53.

Power of Powell By STEVE BROWN FTGDCA MONBULK medium-pacer, Aaron Powell, tore through the Ferntree Gully top order on day one of the penultimate round of Reeves Shield in the Ferntree Gully District Cricket Association. At the Wally Tew Oval last weekend, in seaming conditions after heavy downfalls, Powell, a Lomax medallist from his playing days at Eildon Park, was unplayable. The Blues were 4/1 before crawling to 6/30. Lower-order batsmen Shane Richardson and Harrison Brown then dug in. However, once they fell, the Gully was dismissed for 108 after just 48 overs, with Powell taking 5/30. With two hours of play remaining, the Blues struck back, having Monbulk 5/50 in reply with the game now in the balance. Upwey Tecoma (fifth) is playing Knox Gardens (fourth), with the boys from the gardens looking for their first finals appearance in Reeves Shield. Upwey put in another poor batting performance in a big game and could only muster 89. But like the previous game, the Tigers fought back to have the Falcons 5/62, requiring another 29 runs to lock out Upwey from the four. At Carrington Park, Knoxfield has responded without their captain, Scott McKenzie, and knocked over Upper Gully for just 131. Upper Gully’s Phil Salter was stranded on 43 after running out of partners given the impressive figures from opening bowlers Mitchell Perry (2/26 from 16) and Mitch Burley 3/30 from 17 economical overs.

In reply, The Knights upped the tempo, ending the day 2/58 in just 12 overs to be in command. Top side Eildon Park sent third-placed Johnson Park into bat, as the Sharks struck a handy 240 at Eildon Park. Jordy Dunstone hit 35, with skipper Andrew Devenish 33 also chiming in. Panthers spearhead Nathan CatonRobertson took another four-wicket haul to add to his six last round. With 240 on the board, the Sharks must pierce the opening combination of the Morris brothers next week to take control. Belgrave struggled against a tight Basin attack, led by Jarryd Debernadi (3/15) and Scott Vozzo (3/35), as the Magpies managed just 142. The Basin should return to the winners’ list without any hurdles. Meanwhile, South Belgrave and Belgrave will battle it out for the Saxon Sports T20 grand final to be held at South Belgrave Recreation Reserve today at 5.30pm. Reach Gymnastics director Rebecca Tilley right and coach Tom Exton.

Gymnastics within Reach of school By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM A NEW gymnastics program in Emerald has local kids reaching for their best. Reach Gymnastics has recently opened its doors at Emerald Secondary College with the aim of helping kids realise their potential through fun, fitness and friends. Program director Rebecca Tilley is a former National Level Six gymnast and current veteran’s gymnast. Aimed at school-aged children, she says the program is dedicated to teaching its gymnasts skills and helping them gain confidence. “We’re getting kids moving and

teaching them skills that they will use for life - how to land safely, how to roll, how to socialise with others and body co-ordination and awareness,” she said. “Our classes show kids they can get fit and have fun at the same time, while learning new skills in a safe environment.” Classes run on Friday nights from 5.30pm-6.30pm and 6.30pm7.30pm and all coaches in the program are qualified and registered with Gymnastics Victoria.
