Torture trainers By BRIDGET SCOTT AND CAMERON LUCADOU-WELLS
■ Trainers suspended ■ Dogs scratched ■ Criminal charges possible
■ Club president stands down ■ Multiple investigations launched
■ Sponsors withdraw ■ Industry in jeopardy, says Minister

Commissioner it had suspended “any greyhound trained and/or owned by the 10 persons suspended by the board... in relation to live baiting”. The GRV move closes off a loophole which would allow dogs associated with the 10 suspended trainers to be raced under the name of another owner. The GRV said all suspensions are due to remain in place until live baiting investigations are completed.
Cranbourne’s Wednesday night race meet went ahead, although three dogs trained by Paul Anderton were scratched. The GRV declined to officially name all 10 suspended trainers for legal reasons. Cranbourne Greyhound Club chief executive officer Tony Mitchell declined to comment to the News and directed all questions to the GRV. However the club issued a statement
on its website: “Our club does not condone or support actions of individuals involved in any form of animal cruelty, as highlighted in the Four Corners program and that’s our firm stance.“ GRV chairman Peter Caillard expressed disgust at the graphic footage of the live baiting. “I watched and was sickened. “The use of live bait in the training of greyhounds is abhorrent and has no place in our sport.

“Any person engaged in live baiting can expect to be disqualified and prosecuted. “We have zero tolerance for these individuals,” Mr Caillard said. “To the best of our knowledge, this disgusting and illegal behaviour is isolated in Victoria to the privately owned training facility at Tooradin.“ Continued Page 3

TEN greyhound trainers implicated in a live baiting scandal at Tooradin have had their dogs scratched indefinitely. The scandal exploded on Monday night when the ABC’s Four Corners program aired damning footage of piglets, possums and rabbits being strapped to lures and ripped apart while they are used as live-bait to blood greyhounds. The trainers themselves have also been suspended pending the outcome of investigations by Greyhound Racing Victoria and the RSPCA. The Tooradin Trial Track, which was raided by RSPCA officers, supported by police, on Wednesday last week, has had its registration suspended. And Racing Minister Martin Pakula told the News that the whole greyhound racing industry may be in jeopardy. Live baiting is a criminal offence punishable by a jail term of up to two years and a fine of more than $30,000 under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1986. Those implicated by Four Corners in the scandal include Tooradin Trail Track owner Stuart Mills, wellknown Devon Meadows trainer Darren McDonald, fellow Devon Meadows trainer and former GRV official Paul Anderton and Cranbourne Greyhound Racing Club president Neville King, who stood down from his position on Saturday night. Senior vice-president Greg Carter is the acting president. The industry’s awards night, which was scheduled for Friday night, was postponed with Mr McDonald, who is a former trainer of the year, expected to feature prominently. As fallout from the allegations ricocheted through the industry on Tuesday, the GRV confirmed that under the advice of the Racing Integrity

CASEY Councillor Wayne Smith is set to embark on an estimated $6500 council-funded trip to America this year to pick up new tips on tackling graffiti. Cr Smith, who helped implement the City of Casey’s graffiti removal process and hotline when he returned from a similar trip roughly 15 years ago, will travel to Phoenix, Los Angeles, New York, Washington and Springfield as part of this year’s three-week visit. Flights for the July trip, approved at council on Tuesday, are estimated to cost $3000 while accommodation has also been priced at $3000. Registration at the International Sister Cities Conference in Minneapolis is understood to be roughly $500. Cr Smith, who said he had overestimated the costs for the upcoming trip just to be safe, also noted Casey’s graffiti system hadn’t been reviewed since 2002. “We need to get an update, we’re clearly struggling with
Casey Councillor Wayne Smith will in July jet to US to pick up new tips on tackling graffiti. graffiti again,” he said. “Our removal is quick as it’s always been, but we’re still struggling with the issue. “We need to investigate cross jurisdiction, the worst graffiti in our city is on railway lines, but we’re not given permission for those areas. “I want to explore how that’s dealt with in America, and see the latest methods of technol-
ogy and removal.” Cr Smith also plans to speak to the audience at the International Sister Cities Conference about Casey’s ongoing relationship with the Ermera District in East Timor, in order to gain additional support for the initiative. “I want to promote our relationship with East Timor and try and gauge the interest from the American cities about forming their own relationships with Timor,” he said. As part of the visit, Cr Smith also plans to meet with American Senate and Congress members as well as Capitol Hill staff to investigate how to improve relationships between city councils and state and Federal Government. Cr Smith said upon returning he would present a proposal and recommendation to council and residents. “I don’t travel very often and I don’t travel extravagantly,” he said. “It’s always been clear why I am going and it has demonstrated benefits.”

Stop greyhounds call
Ride on… ridden off PEARCEDALE holiday goers arrived home to find their house had been robbed. Sometime between 26 December and 14 January it is alleged someone has gained access to the garage of the home along Queens Road. It is believed the offenders have forced open the window later taking a Husqvarna lawn mower, car ramps and an air compressor. They also took other assorted tools. The total value of the items was around $6000. Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS AN INVESTIGATOR who helped capture damning footage of live baiting at Tooradin Trial Track has called for a halt to greyhound racing until the sport’s integrity can be proven. Animals Australia chief investigator Lyn White also called for Greyhound Racing Victoria to protect the welfare of dogs suspended over the scandal. The dogs were owned and trained by 10 people, who are under investigation, suspended and potentially facing life bans over alleged live baiting. Ms White feared for the dogs’ welfare - now that they didn’t return a “financial dividend”. “Those dogs have to be at extreme risk. It’s known from statistics that 18,000 (greyhound) dogs are killed each year - they may be puppies or retired dogs. They are dealt with in quite a ruthless way. “GRV has the capacity in spending to rehabilitate and re-home these dogs, rather than them being killed. “It would be the best thing for GRV to do from a PR perspective.” Ms White called for the suspension of races, being sure that there were still unidentified racing dogs boosted by the illegal practice. She said live baiting was systemic, confirmed by the former GRV staffers, leading trainers and respected veterans implicated in the live baiting ring as well as chatter on greyhound forums and talkback radio this week. This is at odds with GRV’s stated opinion that the Tooradin ring was isolated. “How can GRV suggest the practice isn’t systemic when they haven’t been able to detect it in the first place?” Ms White said. “No other code would continue in
Prominent Devon Meadows trainer Darren McDonald has been accused of live baiting. this situation. It’s a matter of racing integrity.” Ms White took aim at GRV for failing to detect live baiting at Tooradin. “They clearly had information on Tooradin, judging by all of the inspections they’ve done recently. “If they had the information, they should have found a way. “You have a regulator with such a conflict of interest - they are promoting the industry and bearing the responsibility of determining trainer illegality and immoral behaviour.” Ms White was confident the Tooradin track footage filmed on cameras “on public land” and on the track would withstand legal challenge.
“I’m really pleased that clearly the Australian community is as outraged and shocked as we were.” GRV chairman Peter Caillard, in a statement, refuted claims that live baiting was widespread. “To the best of our knowledge, this disgusting and illegal behaviour is isolated in Victoria to the privately owned training facility at Tooradin,” Mr Caillard said. As well as suspending trainers, GRV has matched the State Government’s $3m bolstering of its inspector regime, and banned the use of carcasses at training. “Any person engaged in live baiting can expect to be disqualified and
Torture trainers implicated RSPCA chief executive officer Liz Walker said her organisation was told about the live baiting allegations on 28 January. Ms Walker called for more transparency in the greyhound industry and for a strong, independent regulator to oversee the sport. On Tuesday, Mr Pakula said: “Today is not the day for me to be expressing full confidence in GRV.” “I’ve been pleased with the way they’ve responded since they have been made aware of the allegations on Friday. “I think it’s fair to say – and they acknowledge – there’s
questions to be answered as to why it wasn’t picked up sooner.” He said the future of the industry –which comprises about 3000 full-time equivalent jobs and was worth at least $100 million – was being put in “great jeopardy”. He also said the government and GRV would pitch in $3 million each to boost investigatory resources against live baiting. The Warragul Greyhound Centre was the first track to host a race meeting following the revelations. The club lost a major sponsor on Tuesday morning as some of those associated with the sport moved
to distance their brands. The News attempted to contact all the trainers implicated in the scandal. Stuart Mills said “no charges have been laid yet“ and that he did not wish to comment further. Tony Mitchell said Mr King would not comment to the media. Darren McDonald did not return calls from the News. The News also called but was unable to reach Paul Anderton. Racing Integrity Commissioner Sal Perna said those responsible for live baiting could face a 10 year ban from the sport.
A NUMBER of valuable items were taken from a car in Cranbourne West last week. The blue Mazda CX9 was on Navarre Drive between 3pm and 10.15pm on Tuesday 10 February when it was allegedly broken into. An iPad, pram, backpack and other personal items valued at around $2310 were taken. Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

prosecuted. We have zero tolerance for these individuals,” Mr Caillard said. Casey Council has pledged to help ensure the “full force of the law” is aimed at perpetrators of live baiting. The council stated it would write to GRV to express its “grave concern” about the practice and to request a full report from GRV “as soon as possible”. Mayor Mick Morland said live baiting was “not tolerated in our city” – which is home to the highest number of registered trainers and greyhounds in Victoria. “We have offered our services to the RSPCA and police to ensure the full force of the law is realised for anyone involved in this practice.”

Julia gutted by car theft By LACHLAN MOORHEAD A WOMAN has been left shattered after her new car was stolen from her house and wrecked following a frightening police chase that ended in Cranbourne this week. Julia Trofimiuk’s silver Holden Cruze was stolen from under her nose last Wednesday 11 February when she left her Teal Court house unattended for just 10 minutes to chase after her pet staffy cross, Beemer, who had escaped down the street. It’s part of a string of misfortune for Ms Trofimiuk, who only bought the car two months ago, was forced to change all her house locks and whose father is battling cancer. “I was really upset, we’ve had a real string of bad luck lately,” Ms Trofimiuk, of Narre Warren South, said. “I just can’t believe someone would do this.” Ms Trofimiuk’s car had been missing for five days when police were called to an Endeavour Hills property on Monday 16 February, around 11am, where the car had been sighted. Upon their arrival a man took off in the stolen car and the police drove after him, but they were forced to call off the pursuit when the offender, reaching speeds up to 140km/h in an 80km/h zone, sideswiped a tree. The police air wing was also called in to track the driver.
Right: This stolen Holden Cruze was involved in a police pursuit Picture: GARY SISSONS on Monday. 134765 It’s understood the offender pulled over to the side of the road when contacted by officers and then took off again, before police deployed stop strips. The strips were used on Thompsons Road near Merinda Park Railway Station and managed to puncture two of the car’s tyres, but the man is alleged to have kept driving on just two rims and two wheels. The offender’s luck ran out when he pulled into a BP service station at the end of Thompsons Road

and police swarmed on the car. The man was interviewed by police this week and remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court next month. The day the car was stolen Ms Trofimiuk, 28, said she left her keys on the bench before chasing after her dog which had jumped over the fence and run away about 6pm. It’s believed the dog was coaxed from the property.
“I heard the fence rattling, and I ran out the back door and saw Beemer running down the street,” Ms Trofimiuk said. “I ran after him but left the back door unlocked. Some people stopped in their cars and helped me get my dog back - I was only gone for maybe about 10 minutes. “By the time I got back home my car was gone. I thought my fiance had come home, grabbed the keys and come out to look for us but evidently someone has come into the house through the back door, grabbed the keys off the bench and driven off with my car.” The car’s wheels and suspension were ruined in Monday’s pursuit and Ms Trofimiuk is unsure whether her and her fiance, Luke, will be able to pay for the repairs. It’s believed Ms Trofimiuk’s stolen car was also used in a burglary involving two offenders on Friday 13 February at St Peter's College in Cranbourne. CCTV footage shows the offenders using a sledge hammer to break through a window at the school and attempting to steal a safe but they were unsuccessful. Anyone with any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic. com.au.
State-run drug rehab centre mooted for City of Casey A DRUG rehabilitation centre which will be funded by the State Government has been proposed for the City of Casey. City of Casey councillor Geoff Ablett made the suggestion at a council meeting on Tuesday night and said he hoped the State Government would support the idea, given the high costs associated with this type of centre. Cr Ablett said he had had a number
of phone calls over the past two years from concerned parents who needed somewhere to send their children who had been drug-affected. “They have told me it would cost them too much money,” he said. A notice was passed at the council meeting last night which states that council would write to the Minister for Health Martin Foley to meet with council and interested councillors to investigate the possibility of an ‘open

space’ rehabilitation centre for those suffering from drug abuse and addiction in the City of Casey. It would also be open to the broader community in South East Melbourne. Cr Ablett explained that the ‘open space’ facility would be a live-in, and would help its guests re-engage with the community. “Let’s get to these people early before they wind up in jail,” he said. He said the facility should include

He said it would be a terrific concept for the City of Casey, which had “alarming” statistics in regards to drugs.

THE volunteers at the Andrews Centre in Endeavour Hills don’t help the needy to gain recognition. But that doesn’t stop the Endeavour Hills community from thanking and rewarding their local crisis and counselling centre. The money raised from the Rotary Club of Endeavour Hill’s upcoming Golf Day later this month will be largely donated to the Andrews Centre to assist in its work. While recently helping the Andrews Centre with a $7000 renovation of its kitchen, Endeavour Hills Rotarian John O’Reilly said his club was blown away by the selfless work carried out by the facility’s volunteers for the less fortunate. “They work in the community, we work for the community, and these people are just doing amazing things,” he said of the Andrews Centre. “They are all professional people who have retired and they volunteer their time. “We were so impressed with what they do and we thought let’s not just do the kitchen but let’s also throw some money at them, too.” While various other charities will also benefit from funds raised at the Golf Day, sponsored by major partner Bendigo Bank, Mr O’Reilly said the Andrews Centre would be the main beneficiary. “When you think about people who can’t speak English and can’t get a job, when they haven’t got food - there’s so many basic things that the Andrews Centre helps out with,” he said.
From left, John O'Reilly, Bob Powell and Bendigo Bank's Jason Pater. 134528 “They’re very important, in my opinion, and it’s done with love. They’re very genuine and that’s what blew us away.” The Golf Day, which will take place at the Cranbourne Golf Club
on Monday 23 February from 12.30pm, was started all the way back in 1986 by the club’s original chairman, Bob Powell. Mr Powell will also be at the event this year at which participants

The centre will also offer Coles, Kmart, Target, Woolworths and more than 120 specialty stores all under one roof. In addition, there will be a new lifestyle and dining precinct with alfresco cafes, licensed restaurants and specialist coffee bar. To ensure nothing is left be-
hind, there have also been significant upgrades to many of the existing stores. “There will be something for everyone,” Ms Gunner said. She also mentioned 300 additional employment opportunities which will become available as a result of the expansions. Cupids were out and about last weekend to promote the opening of the new store, and invite people along to be part of the excitement.

THE countdown is well and truly on as Cranbourne Park management get set to unveil the centre’s multimillion dollar redevelopment. In less than 40 days, the Cranbourne community will have the chance to explore the new and improved Cranbourne Park which has been totally transformed. On Thursday 26 March, the $113 million dollar redevelopment will be revealed to the public which includes a stylish and family friendly shopping, dining and entertainment destination. Centre manager Danielle Gunner said they would be thrilled to host the public in the new centre which boasted an exciting new shopping precinct, including major stores such as Cotton On Mega, Lorna Jane and Novo Shoes. Marketing manager Allison Bailey said the store would also host a post-opening, three-week campaign to provide endless holiday activities for families.

Roundabout fix on the way A HAZARDOUS Hampton Park intersection will finally see a long-awaited upgrade, the State Government confirmed this week. But an avid campaigner who was pivotal in putting together a 1000-signature petition roughly five years ago calling for action at the intersection of Pound and Shrives roads believes traffic lights are the main priority for the site but have not been included in the proposed plan. Narre Warren South MP Judith Graley was joined by local residents on Tuesday to confirm the $5.2 million upgrade, expected to be finished by June 2017. The upgrade will see a two-lane roundabout installed at the intersection to improve
concern that a roundabout may not be enough to ease congestion. “I’m not sure if a roundabout is the answer. I would like to see a reconsideration for lights at that site,” she said. “But anything’s better than what it is now.” When asked by the News if traffic lights at the intersection were on the cards, Ms Graley said VicRoads believed the proposed upgrade would reduce the number and severity of crashes at the site. “Road safety experts advise that the preferred option at this location was a roundabout due to a number of factors including land acquisition and improved safety for all road users,” she said.

safety. Planning is underway for the project which will also include service relocations, new guard fencing, bus stop relocations, tree removal and new street lighting. “We’re committed to ending the neglect and will get on with the job of making our roads safer,” Ms Graley said. “Thank you to everyone who jumped aboard our campaign for safety improvements at this intersection, it’s through your efforts that we have secured this much needed upgrade.” While welcoming the upgrade, Narre Warren resident Kylie Christmas indicated that she and others had been calling for traffic lights to be installed at the site since they started campaigning. Large scale pest By BRIDGET SCOTT A FRUSTRATED shop owner from Junction Village has blamed a snake infestation and overgrown bushland for his lack of business. Joe Khoury who runs the milk bar in Junction Village has said “nobody is stopping by” and said the area is plagued with snakes every summer. “They’re everywhere, it’s happening all over,” he said. Mr Khoury urged City of Casey council to maintain the parklands behind his business where he believes the snakes come from. He said the land is overgrown and uninviting. “There is not one passing trade because the park is a jungle,” he said. Councillor Geoff Ablett raised a notice at a council meeting last month which asked the council to consider the possibility of employing a snake catcher during the warmer months. However an officer’s report presented to Tuesday night’s council meeting said the “council does not provide a wildlife (snake catcher) service for private properties during the hotter months”. The officer’s report also recommended that the council continues to fully utilise the services available to manage wildlife such as snakes provided by the State Government. Casey’s acting manager for environment Warren Smith said the council had met with traders in Junction Village to discuss clearing the grass and scrub.
City of Casey councillor Geoff Ablett, left, with shop owners Lou from the Beauty and Hairdressing Salon, Joe Khoury from the milk bar and bottleshop and Don Fulton from Don’s Meats Butcher. 134783 The council also suggested a number of ways that residents and business owners could discourage snakes, which included removing hiding places, keeping gardens tidy, reducing food sources and placing pet water bowls away from houses. “If residents see snakes on their land they are encouraged to contact the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning on 136 186 or a licensed snake catcher in the first instance,” Mr Smith said. Resident Lisa Watts said she had a snake on her property a few weeks ago which had slith-
ered past her front door. “One came from our neighbour’s front yard and got under the fence,” she said. Mr Khoury, who has owned the milk bar for 22 years, said he wants council to “clear the jungle” and have the park maintained. “It’s the only strip of shops we have here in Junction Village and, sadly, nobody is stopping by,” he said. “We are supposed to be seen from the highway. “There is an issue and it needs to be addressed.”

Building friendships through play By BRIDGET SCOTT A BRAND-new playgroup at the Balla Balla Community Centre will provide another alternative for young families in the area. Manager of the centre Maree Cullinan said feedback from the community prompted the creation of a new playgroup which held its first session on 5 February this year. “We always knew we would have one and we thought it was time,” she said. “The playgroup was set up for the local community - we wanted to give them the first option.” Ms Cullinan said they hoped to help build networks between local families and already have 25 children as part of the group. She said given the Balla Balla centre already had a number of expressions of interest
they planned to begin another one next term. She said her group also made the decision to join with the local toy library at the end of last year. “Our intention is to support the toy library to build up their volunteer base and build member numbers,” she said. While still a separate entity to the toy library, the Balla Balla Community Centre plans to throw its support behind the library and Ms Cullinan has urged families to get involved. “We want to get them back on track and don’t want to lose valuable resources,” Ms Cullinan said. “Once you get the momentum going, the community see the value.” Michelle Webster will co-ordinate the new playgroup which will be centred on families and building friendships. “That’s how a community works,” Ms Cullinan said.

Rotaract way to interact By LACHLAN MOORHEAD
Mugging victim knocked out A MAN was left with a broken jaw and a severe eye injury after he was allegedly robbed and assaulted while walking through parklands in Narre Warren earlier this month. The victim was approached while he was walking alone through a park on the corner of
Darling Way and Upton Crescent. Police believe two people approached the victim and used force to steal his cigarettes. It is alleged they also demanded his wallet, however when the victim refused one offender punched him from be-
hind and knocked him unconscious. It’s believed the victim had his mobile phone as well as his car and house keys stolen. He was treated by paramedics before he was taken to Monash Medical Centre in Clayton.

With its nearest partner being the Mornington Peninsula Rotaract, the new Casey Cardinia group will focus on the sustainability and upkeep of both municipalities. Some of the key priorities for the Casey Rotaract group will include the sustainability of the environment, keeping public areas tidy, first aid, food handling, international projects and finding a neighbouring sister club overseas. “My vision is to get the word out to young people that
Rotaract is a great new way to meet new friends, be social and grow,” Ben said. “There’s no maximum to the number of members we can have. Generally, when clubs get too busy members can feel disconnected, so if it does grow, we might split into two. “We’ll be looking to double our membership over the next year and half,” he said. THE Casey Cardinia Rotaract Club was officially chartered on Sunday after months of preparation and planning. The new Rotaract group, a subsidiary of Rotary but catering specifically for 18 to 30-year-olds, was inducted as an official club over the weekend, with 14 members involved and several more on the cards. Casey Cardinia Rotaract president Ben Hill said Sunday’s luncheon served as both a 110th anniversary for Rotary, and the launch of the new Rotaract club. Ben, who was the 2014 Casey Young Citizen of the Year, said he’d had no involvement with Rotary before now, but couldn’t resist the role when approached. “I really love leading young people to achieve great things in our community, to better the youth and to help people and make things a lot more fun,” Ben, who just turned 19, said. “It’s very important to get more young people involved in clubs and the community through Rotaract. “A lot of people are involved in sporting clubs, and the Casey area has a lot of older people in community service clubs, but there was definitely a need for something in the younger age group.”

SHOOTING Stars Early Learning Centre at Cranbourne North is a small family run centre which aims to offer specialised personal care to all its children and families. Centre director Karen McDonald, who has been in the childcare industry for 27 years, said the centre provides long day care and accepted children from six weeks to school age. Karen, who is also a qualified Mothercraft nurse, director and trainer of early childhood education and care, said the centre has a kinder program, before and after school care and school holiday program. “We provide all meals, including breakfast, morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea and late snack,” she said. “We also provide nappies and sunscreen.” “All of our educators are
highly qualified and experienced. We work in conjunction with Courtney Gardens Primary School to provide before and after school care. “Children are walked to school by a qualified educator and escorted to their classroom. “They are collected in the afternoon by meeting outside the office.” The centre prides itself in being part of the community and will be taking part in the World’s Greatest Shave on 12 March with Karen and another staff member shaving their heads to raise money for the fight against cancer. Karen said the centre focussed on providing high quality care through developing exceptional communicative and co-operative relationships between families and educators. “An important factor in the
provision of high quality care is the standard of programs offered to the children by educators,” she said. “Play is an essential tool in the early education of a child. “Through play children learn about their world. “It is important for a successful childcare environment to understand and emphasise the importance of play in the development of the children in their care. “At Shooting Stars we offer a play based educational program which builds the foundation for learning before the child reaches formal education.” Shooting Stars Early Learning Centre can be found at 8 Elizabeth Street, Cranbourne North, and is open from 6.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Friday. We Care Because Your Family Is Special
WHEN a new baby arrives at St John of God Berwick Hospital, the maternity team like to mother the new mums. With recovery, feeding, sleeping and bonding taking priority for the new parents, St John of God midwives go the extra mile to ensure all the other bits and pieces are taken care of. Each private maternity room is comfortably fitted with ensuite, TV, phone, plug-in internet access and a bar fridge. New parents can relax and enjoy quality time with their new baby in comfort and privacy. Delicious and nutritious meals are delivered to each room and partners can also enjoy a hot meal for a small charge. Each afternoon a special Happy Hour treat trolley visits each maternity patient, stocked with a scrumptious selection of cakes, pastries, fresh fruit, drinks and, most importantly, the not-recommended throughout pregnancy, soft cheese and crackers! This opportunity for indulgence each afternoon is a quiet moment for the new parents to enjoy feeling pampered during this special time in their lives.
“There is so much to learn for the new parents. “We like to take extra special care of them so they can use their time in hospital to get to know their new bub and so they can go home rested and educated for what lies ahead,” said Joyce Coyle, Maternity Unit Manager. The rest of the family hasn’t been forgotten either! Partners are very welcome to stay overnight and complementary accommodation is provided in the new mother’s room. New grandparents have the opportunity to participate in the Grandparent Class (bookings required), giving them the chance to refresh their skills and be brought up to date with the latest techniques and trends in baby care. Lisa Evans, Director of Nursing said: “Grandparents can be such a help to the new family when a baby is born. “Our aim is to ensure they are on the same page as the new parents and can be involved in a supportive and positive way for everyone.” Mum can relax while older children visit and enjoy a story in the Story-Time Pod, located in the Maternity Ward (a small cost applies).
For some families, receiving post natal care is more comfortable and convenient at home. When it is deemed safe to do so, new mothers have the opportunity to head home soon after birth and receive a visit from the Midwives at Home program. One of the highly qualified midwives will offer advice and guidance on sleeping, settling and feeding and general health and wellbeing for both mum and baby. The family will also receive a pack containing vouchers for lunch for two people at 81 Bar and Restaurant and Gold Class cinema and a massage voucher for Berwick Pharmacy. St John of God Berwick Hospital is flexible, if mums have specific needs all they need to do is ask. Staff will always go above and beyond, ensuring new families are able to enjoy the precious arrival of a new baby. They take care of the small things so that they can focus on what is most important - the new family. For further information, phone the Maternity Care Ward on 9709 1400 or visit www. sjog.org.au/berwick.

Contests containing various potato skills raised funds for Blairlogie in Cranbourne, providing fun for all.
Bucket loads of backing By GEORGIA WESTGARTH A POTATO in a bucket contest was held on Sunday 15 February by the Rotary Club of Cranbourne to raise funds for the Blairlogie Living and Learning organisation. About $6000 was raised along with spuds galore and three awards went out to the fastest potato peeler, the biggest potato crop and the biggest potato, weighing in at 240 grams. “Some people used their own secret remedies, others put stones in the bottom or straw, all sorts of things were tried and tested, some people used garden compost or potting mix as well,” Tom Schreurs from the Rotary Club of Cranbourne
said. The contest was a success with about 120 potato growers buying a 25 litre bucket and potato seeds for $30 each. The buckets were sold in September and growers had six months to grow their spuds.“We had a barbecue on harvest day and weighed the spuds, the largest crop weighed a kilo with about nine potatoes,” Mr Schreurs said. Blairlogie and the Rotary Club of Cranbourne are planning to make the spud contest an annual event. “It was a fantastic day and was enjoyed by all, a fun way to raise awareness for Blairlogie,” Mr Schreurs said. Blairlogie Living and Learn-
ing chief executive Carolyn Carr said she will be seeking advice from potato experts next year. “I attempted the challenge without much success. “I don’t think I was the only one on the day that had their bucket emptied with just a pile of dirt to show,” Ms Carr said. “It sounds like such a simple thing but it’s actually very tricky,” she said. The money raised will go towards equipment and resources at the Cranbourne South organisation. “I think it has inspired people to try and produce a better crop of spuds next year,” Ms Carr said.

Introducing your
School Principal At Lyndhurst Secondary College we are a progressive learning community that aims to empower students for learning and life. The College has high expectations of all of our students and delivers a diverse, engaging and stimulating learning program designed to maximise the outcomes of each and every student. All students have the option to access their own netbook, affording them to access ICT resources in every lesson. 2016 marks the launch of the Academic Curriculum Enhancement (ACE) Program, a specialised class for highly achieving students, where students’ individual abilities will be nurtured and students will be encouraged to increase the breadth and depth of their learning. These students will also have access to an early start VCE in later years that will increase the number of units they can study which, in turn, may increase their ATAR scores. In addition to this, those seeking a career in a trade have a broad range of VET and VCAL options available to them, including school based apprenticeships. Student voice is considered vital at Lyndhurst Secondary College and students have extensive opportunities to exercise this through a varied portfolio of student leadership positions. I would encourage you to contact us to make an appointment for a tour of our school to learn more about how we can work with you to support the learning of your child.

Founded in 1970, Maranatha Christian School is the longest serving Christian school in Victoria, built on the foundations of Christian discipleship, personal integrity, academic excellence and community service. It is a delight to be principal of Maranatha Christian School, which is a wonderful school community, committed to working together to ensure the best outcomes for all students. Maranatha celebrates 45 years of Christian educational leadership in 2015 and offers ELC – Year 12 across three sites. In addition to its rigorous academic pathway that challenges students to think creatively and apply what they have learned, the school also offers a fully integrated and well-rounded pathway for VCAL students that supports them in their future careers. With dedicated, talented and caring staff, a Maranatha student is well prepared to discover their God given gifts and talents and so providing the skills for students to become leaders in a wide variety of fields. Raising children in today’s world and ensuring a quality, affordable education is challenging, so the strong partnership between school and home, and Maranatha’s dedication to Christ-centered learning supports parents in their decisions. There is no better wish that we have as parents but to see our children maximize what God has given them by using those gifts to the benefit of others. School is a journey that we travel together. I look forward to your partnership as we help boys and girls move from today’s students to tomorrow’s leaders. In doing so, we strive to achieve our utmost for His glory.

It has been my privilege to lead Chairo’s Pakenham campus since it began in 1998 and to see it develop into the vibrant community of over 600 students from Kinder to Year 12 that it is today. Students are able to start as three-year-olds at our beautiful, well-resourced campus and transition smoothly from Kinder to Junior School (Grades Prep to 4), and then to Middle School (Years 5 to 8) and Senior School (Years 9 to 12). Our goal is to give students every opportunity to learn, excel and grow in a nurturing and challenging environment. We provide a range of experiences and opportunities as part of a diverse and rigorous education. We value and affirm that each individual possesses God-given gifts and we desire that students will mature into strong Christian men and women who are active within the community. Our mission is to provide excellence in Christ-centred education in partnership with families within a caring Christian community. An education at Chairo is founded upon a partnership between family and school, and we encourage parents to be active participants in the educational process. For further information, visit us at www.chairo.vic. edu.au or contact our Enrolment Coordinator, Fiona Clacy (5942 5632 or fclacy@chairo.vic.edu.au). Fiona will be happy to answer your questions and arrange a personal tour of the campus.

Kooweerup Secondary College is an inspiring and vibrant learning centre with a very strong community behind it. I am always impressed with the fantastic support for the College from local groups in the community. Students and staff are constantly working together to improve the school in ways such as obtaining excellent results in the VCE. The College has grown in the past six years but we are stabilising to around 1000 students. During this growth we have maintained a strong sense of tradition and respect. The College values a positive school climate and works hard to extend the students through the Performing Arts, Sport and Pastoral Care. I strongly desire students to have a wide range of experiences during their schooling. The College has a strong transition program and works successfully with a number of local primary schools to ensure a smooth start to secondary college life for our new students. There is also a SEAL (Select Entry Accelerated Learning) program running at the College. In 2015, our Year 7 to Year 9 students use iPads and our senior students use Netbooks or another device from home. We are also undergoing a significant building program, using funds from a $7 million dollar government grant, to implement not only new buildings but a new way of developing and delivering curriculum to our students. At Kooweerup Secondary College, everyone is encouraged to achieve their personal best.

A new school year provides opportunities for all students to work towards achieving their goals, to explore new perspectives and learn new skills; our teachers and students are a learning community at Casey Grammar. As Principal, I see my role as engendering and sustaining the best facilities and resources that we can in the learning environment, encouraging the pursuit of excellence in every endeavour and the development of resilience in the face of difficulties. Underpinning effective learning is the school’s Pastoral Program; one of the aims of our program is to develop in our young people the values and attitudes to enable them to become responsible citizens and contributors to our community. Our young people in today’s world have many opportunities to be successful learners; our school offers these opportunities, not only in the core subjects of study, but in performing arts, sports, camps, leadership and service to others. Academic results are important, but also important is allowing all children to achieve realistic, meaningful and challenging learning in a supportive environment. Our new VCE Centre provides an area where students can maximise their learning opportunities; dedicated teachers, technology, small group tutoring all contribute to an atmosphere where students can focus on the final years of their secondary education. Estate brand has withstood the test of time but it was decided it was time to revitalise, revamp and rethink their brand position in the market. “We knew that after our 10-year anniversary, the right time to unveil a new look was appropriate,” directors Kristen Turner and Marisa Adams said. “We are now embarking on our newest endeavour and will be forging a future as Peake Real Estate. “With the regeneration of our brand, we’re staying true to our philosophies and the same six-star service that you have come to expect will not change - we believe that the fresh new look will resonate with tomorrow’s home buyers, sellers and investors.”

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST
Beer trade brewing nicely By LACHLAN MOORHEAD A RE-BRANDED brewery in Doveton is fast becoming the go-to watering hole in the state’s south-east. The Brownstone Micro Brewery, attached to the Atura Hotel, is helping to re-invigorate Doveton as a desirable location with its promise of unique new brews and diverse employment opportunities. The brewery was rebranded by Chifley Hotels when the company took over the Atura as part of its Amalgamated Holdings Portfolio in late October. “We inherited the brewery and changed the name, it was previously called the Coldwater Creek Brewery and we changed it to Brownstone,” Atura Hotel general manager Lisa Parker said. “We also inherited their pilsener recipe and have since created our own pale ale, and our brewer is busy coming up with the recipe for a new brew.” Trademarking its two current distinct brews as the Brownstone Pale Ale and the Brownstone Pilsener, Ms Parker said the micro-brewery drew patrons from across the City of Casey and beyond.
She said there were no other facilities like it on the way out town until you reached the Mornington Peninsula. “It’s certainly our point of difference, given there’s nothing else like it in the area,” she said. “Our closest competitors are in the Morning Peninsula, we’re a pit stop along the way.” The 500-litre brewery, built on the Atura site four years ago, was recognised by Chifley as a facility that could be expanded and opened beyond its regular dinner hours. “We’ve got a really strong following of local corporates, and we’d like to develop more of a family trade,” Ms Parker said. “In March we’ll be opening for both lunch and dinner. “Craft beer is increasing year and year in popularity and we’re also looking into the possibility of botting our beers and developing our recipes further to keep it interesting for the local market.” Ms Parker believes a local market around Doveton is beginning to offer new opportunities as well as new lagers.

TREVOR Ratcliffe knows a thing or two about business and personal finance. That’s why the retired public servant is launching the Skills for Life information sessions tonight at 7.30pm, beginning with tips on money management. The Everyday Finances session will be presented by Lisa Hansen from the Casey North Community Information and Support Service (CISS) with the workshop aimed at showing the attendees how to best organise their finances to avoid getting stuck in debt. “It’s about money management and managing your budget and we will also discover how to stretch your income further,” Skills For Life co-ordinator Mr Ratcliffe said. “It will also show people what resources are available to help them, as well as how to save money on utility bills and knowing
your rights and responsibilities,” he said. Mr Ratcliffe is planning for seven information sessions that will run up to June. The topics of the sessions, which are to be held at the Community Room at Narre Warren North Uniting Church, will range from family relationships, baby care, men’s health, mental health and dementia. Mr Ratcliffe said the announcement of his project had been welcomed by local community organisations that are keen to expand their audience. “I’ve always had a bit of a passion about helping people to help themselves, whether it comes back to a feeling of self-worth or self-esteem,” he said. “Even if people aren’t having financial problems, we’d all like to afford a better lifestyle.” For more information, contact Trevor Ratcliffe on 0428 472 030 or 9700 5061 or email narrenorth. uc@gmail.com.
Welcome to make your own Mac By LACHLAN MOORHEAD DOVETON McDonald’s will add another 40 jobs to its staff roster in the coming weeks as the restaurant launches a new food program. The Doveton eatery, found on the Princes Highway, will be one of the first McDonald’s stores in Australia to unveil the Create Your Taste initiative, which will see staff at the facility boosted from roughly 90 employees to 130. The new program will allow customers to create their own burgers through using a touch screen and invites them to sit down before their meal is then brought out to them. Australia is the first country to trial the program. McDonald’s Doveton operations consultant Duy Tran said the new initiative,
which is set to be rolled out nation-wide, fuelled a need for additional workers. He also said while majority of the new employees will be given part-time contracts, there will still be some fulltime position in the offing. “It will be mostly casual wages, and mainly part-time, but we may have the occasional one or two full-timers,” he said. “This is creating jobs; it’s a new concept to get more customers coming through. “The feedback has been absolutely awesome.” McDonald’s Doveton restaurant manager Clare Roggentin said the new job openings will also provide more people in the Doveton community with the chance to complete their Certificate III in retail.
“We actually just signed up a whole lot of new people and this is an opportunity for the people we’re bringing in,” she said. “They can jump on board and do their Certificate III in retail. We try and encourage our staff to do that because it means their training is better and the service they give is better as well. “With the additional staff, that opportunity’s going to be available for them as well.” McDonald’s Doveton licensee Howard Armitage said he was “proud to provide employment, training and growth opportunities to staff”, while being able to extend those opportunities to an additional “40 locals”. Trading her Dandenong green and gold for the national variety, Aimie Clydesdale has been selected in an extended Opals squad looking towards the Rio Olympic Games. 134249 Picture: JARROD POTTER
Rouse takes the reins
Clydesdale a perfect Opal fit By JARROD POTTER RELISHING her chance to shine in the starting five has paid off for Dandenong Rangers guard Aimie Clydesdale, with her selection in an extended Australian Opals squad. Clydesdale, 21, from Endeavour Hills, has excelled in her limited time in the Rangers’ WNBL starting five after a horror knee injured sidelined regular point guard Kathleen Macleod, and on the back of her WNBL success has earned a spot in the Opals Rio Qualifiers squad. She has averaged 6.3 points per game since her elevation to the starting roster, with a best haul of 13 points, seven rebounds against Adelaide earlier this season. Trying to find the perfect line-up ahead of the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games, the Opals coaching staff has whit-
tled down the names from internationals and WNBL players to find the best 34 ahead of the 2016 games. Clydesdale - alongside Rangers’ team mate Lauren Scherf - signal the next generation of Opals’ talent as head coach Brendan Joyce balances youth and experience in the squad. Sporting a mix of established Opals stars with Olympic experience and emerging young talent, head coach Brendan Joyce said that it was important to select a squad that could carry the momentum built at the World Championships. “It is an exciting time for the Jayco Opals as we begin our preparation for the Olympic qualification and the Olympic games in Rio 2016,” Opals head coach Brendan Joyce said. “Once again we have named an extended squad to build to-
wards the Rio Olympics, this was proven to be successful for our World Championship campaign, building depth and competition in the squad.” Former Dandenong Ranger and current Townsville Fire guard Steph Cumming, also from Endeavour Hills, earned her selection in the 34-player extended squad as well. Rounding off the local talent in the roster is one of Australia’s best basketballers in Penny Taylor, who originally came from Belgrave South, and has been in elite form for Dandenong this season since arriving mid-way through the WNBL campaign. A shortened squad of a maximum of 24 players for the upcoming camp at the Basketball Australia National Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Canberra will be announced this week. The Olympic qualifiers will be played in August.
TAKING on the chair of South East Juniors (SEJ), the league announced this week the appointment of James Rouse. Rouse will replace Roger Hampson as Chair, who after five years of service, has taken up a role with the South East Commission. “I am incredibly passionate about young people and ensuring they have high quality opportunities to be participating in sport,” Rouse said. This passion emanates from a background in teaching, local government sport development and leisure management. Rouse has a great understanding and knowledge of the local area, having worked for the City of Casey for the past 11 years in a variety of roles. “I am very well aware of the significant growth and demographic change that is occurring in this part of South East Melbourne,” Rouse said. “I see the SEJ as being in a very strong position to move forward and continue to grow junior football in the area… I want to see the league continue with our already documented strategic plans. “Our continued focus will be to work with and support clubs to further develop and enhance their capacity, working through the AFL Club Accreditation Program.” Rouse has previously served on the SEJ board for five years, having been approached by AFL Victoria in 2009 to participate in the working group that was established to reinvigorate and strengthen the then named DDJFL into the thriving league we have today. James Rouse has been appointed Chair of the South East Juniors. Picture: SOUTH EAST JUNIORS work alongside some former board members and overseeing a new group of youth development motivates Rouse greatly and reflects on this time with the league fondly. “The experience of working on the board was an interesting challenge and I am highly motivated about the prospect of being involved again, this time as Chairman,” Rouse said. “The board has a great balance of skills and experience, whilst the staff is also highly qualified. “Collectively our focus is to ensure that more and more boys and girls are playing football through the SEJ.
The SEJ would also like to take this opportunity to thank Roger Hampson for his service to the league. “Roger has overseen significant change at the league including the adoption of a new governance and administration structure and the adoption of a new league name and brand,” SEJ General Manager Shaun Connell said. “The league is indebted to his dedication and visionary approach which has seen the SEJ the envy of leagues across the state and this region. “It has been a pleasure to work with Roger and I see him as real mentor to myself and look forward to keeping in touch.”

Sweeney go to… woe By JARROD POTTER Victorian Premier Cricket - Round 16 (day 2) WITH the Cricket World Cup firing into life on Saturday, Victorian Premier Cricket settled into a temporary Sunday fixture as Dandenong and Casey-South Melbourne both succumbed in clearing skies. DANDENONG v RINGWOOD IT ALL went pear-shaped from the start for Dandenong (144 and 1/70) as the Panthers tried to hunt down the Tom Stray-led Ringwood (5/341dec) tally. From a strong start - led by Tom Donnell (30) and Brett Forsyth (11), the wheels fell off instantly for Dandenong. From 0/42, Dandenong woefully fell away to find itself 7/71. The resilient knock of Peter Sweeney (50 not out) was about the only bright light from the innings as the Panthers came and went from the crease without much fuss as Matt Fotia (4/29) and David King (3/18) ran riot. James Pattinson (4) - returning from Victorian duties for day two - didn’t faze the scorers much as the only lower-order partnership of note came from Sweeney and captain Dan Doran (24). They added 25 for the eighth scalp before Doran succumbed to Brendan Walsh (1/25). It left Sweeney to carry on and effectively carry his bat from first drop to final scalp as James Wilcock (9) held his own to get Sweeney to his half-ton before becoming the last wicket at 144. Ringwood - on the hunt for maximum points - sent Doran and his men back in again for a second heaped spoonful of pain, but the home side fared a lot better in attempt number two. Forsyth (46 not out) and Sweeney (15 not out) made sure no inroads were made by the Rams as stumps were called after 19 overs in the second innings. FRANKSTON-PENINSULA v CASEY-SOUTH MELBOURNE DEVIN Pollock’s master class century last week wouldn’t be the only one pilfered at AH Butler Oval as Paul Borrington (115 not out) got his eye in to help Frankston-Peninsula (3/290) knock off Casey-South Melbourne (287). Borrington - in tandem with Matthew Gapes (74) and Sam Wiese (66) added size-
Ringwood might have had Dandenong number-three Peter Sweeney on the hop, but the Panthers' batsman kept his feet to remain unbeaten on 50 not out. 134626 Picture: JARROD POTTER able partnerships to take the match away from the Swans. Casey could only muster containment and not out-and-out dissection of the Heat’s batting order. While it took the best part of the day to secure the points, with Frankston-Peninsula earning the win in the 93rd over - the visitors didn’t have the arsenal needed to douse the Heat. Shane Maggs (1/21) was the best statistically of the bowlers while Dan Watson (1/49) stormed in for 21 overs on a boiling hot day on the coast. In the last round of the season, Casey South-Melbourne will host St Kilda while Dandenong is away at Northcote.
Kumara’s elemental bloodbath By JARROD POTTER DDCA Turf 1 - Round 10 (day 1) ELEMENTAL problems wreaked havoc across the Dandenong District Cricket Association (DDCA), with only two Turf 1 matches getting out onto the park. CRANBOURNE v SPRINGVALE SOUTH FIRST versus second, bragging rights and top spot on the line. There aren’t many higher stakes than that in local cricket and Springvale South (1/42) ensured advantage was in its favour against ladder-leading Cranbourne (146). The early moisture played into the Bloods hands as Yoshan Kumara (4/27) cleaned up the top order. Jordan Cleland (3) - bowled Kumara. Brayden Roscoe (2) bowled Kumara. Jake Harrington (2) - bowled Kumara. And just to cap it off... Ben Maroney (11) LBW... Kumara. The Sri Lankan spearhead left the Eagles wounded at 4/39, but not done as Steve Spoljaric (52) remained at the crease. Rebuilding the shattered remains of the Cranbourne innings, Spoljaric and the middle order gave the side something to defend. Spoljaric alongside Te Ahu Davis (39) knocked in a 76-run partnership before the duo were ripped from the crease virtually back-to-back by Ruwantha Kellepotha (1/42) and Craig Slocombe (4/20) respectively.
The Springvale South captain feasted on the lower order as he ran through the tail without much wagging to get in his way. Cam Dinger (14) put up a gutsy knock to see out 41 balls before he was run out by the two Cranbourne’s Saturday nightmare-generators - Kumara and Slocombe. Davis (1/0) kept things tidy from his four overs in response and withdrew Nathan King (13) from the crease as he smashed his pegs. Steve Masterson (15 not out) and Ryan Quirk (10 not out) kept proceedings as risk-free as possible en route to 1/42 by stumps. COOMOORA v BERWICK RUNS on the board are always worth their weight in gold, especially for Coomoora (193) as the Kangaroos remain on the lookout for their first Turf 1 triumph this season. While the order did collapse spectacularly in parts - initiated by a superb five-wicket haul from Darren de Souza (5/48) Coomoora managed to push a defining partnership and set up a decent shot at victory. Slumping to 3/49, the impetus was taken up by Saliya Saman (75) and Lance Baptist (58) as the duo smashed the Bears to all points on Coomoora Reserve. The duo took the score to 149 - as Baptist notched his best score of the season - before the all-
rounder succumbed to de Souza, the first of his victims as the Berwick bowler had a field day en route to his maiden five-for. It left Saman to play a solo hand - a job he’s become used to doing on occasion this season with the ball, but not so much the blade. Haphazard and sporadic support didn’t give Saman much to lean on at the other end as de Souza and Jarrod Goodes (3/52) stormed through the lower order resistance. From 3/149 before Baptist’s demise, the Kangaroos fell away to concede 5/30. Saman’s gutsy knock - highlighted by raising the bat on his second half-century in three Turf 1 matches - was derailed by Berwick’s beguiler de Souza for his fourth scalp. Set 193 on the first innings, Berwick (0/23) held out against Saman (0/6) and Joel Robertson (0/4) in the final-eight overs of the day to leave 170 to hunt down this weekend. North Dandenong v Heinz, Parkfield v Lyndale, Dandenong West v Buckley Ridges and Hallam Kalora Park v Mordialloc were unable to get under way yesterday. Not to despair about a lack of cricket this weekend though, the DDCA held its rescheduled Round 7 one-dayers on Sunday afternoon.

DDCA Turf 1 - Round 7 (One day) BERWICK and Heinz damaged their finals’ chances on Sunday in their rescheduled Round 7 one-dayers, as Hallam Kalora Park and Springvale South pushed aside the Casey-area sides in the coloured-clothed arena. BERWICK v HALLAM KALORA PARK FLATTENED by the Hawks, Berwick (85) was left to lick its wounds and plot for a pair of upcoming wins for any chance to make finals. Copping the brunt of Leigh Booth’s (5/22) rage, the Bears were sent back to the sheds rapidly. At 3/2 - three wickets for two runs that is - Berwick could only muster some sporadic attack as Bathiya Perera (38), Ryan Williamson (20) and Cory Bevan (14) were the only batsmen to bother the scorers. William Whyte (4/9) was also lethal to Berwick’s order, as he notched four maidens in his miserly four-wicket haul.
The Hallam Kalora Park (2/89) response was equally brutal as Rhys Serpanchy (34 not out) and Amila Perera (15 not out) cleaned up the runs with 15 overs to spare. Falling seven-points behind fourthplaced Hallam Kalora Park, Berwick will need wins against Coomoora (currently chasing 193) and ladder-leading Cranbourne in the final round, plus a few other results to fall its way throughout the last two fixtures. SPRINGVALE SOUTH v HEINZ SOUTHERN DISTRICTS THE Bloods drip-by-drip did away with Heinz Southern Districts (9/140) to dent the Cobras chances of post-season action. Springvale South (7/216) - led by Craig Slocombe (55) and a lower-order smack from Yoshan Kumara (58) was too much for the Cobras’ attack to contain as it racked up a 200plus total. Paul Stockdale (3/28) and Justin Davis (2/69) held up their ends ably, but could not break the important partnerships when they formed. In response, Heinz was
smacked about by Jarrod Armitage (3/25) and Ruwantha Kellepotha (3/27) - as only the captain Matt Cox (35) really dug in. The Cobras now need to knock off North Dandenong (rain affected, reduced to a onedayer) and Parkfield to scrape back into finals’ contention. CRANBOURNE v BUCKLEY RIDGES A LITTLE bit from a lot of sources kept Cranbourne (6/172) flying atop the DDCA ladder as the run home to finals begins in earnest. Putting behind them a mediocre Saturday against Springvale South, Cranbourne lifted across the board to take the points away from a tepid Buckley Ridges (9/130). Steve Spoljaric (49) continued a scintillating season, with solid support from Te Ahu Davis (32), Ben Maroney (27) and Jake Harrington (24). Buckley Ridges’ import Anuj Dal (42) was the only player to fire as Cameron Dinger (4/21) and Ben Maroney (3/18) speared through the visitors.

The Gods must be crazy By RUSSELL BENNETT WEST GIPPSLAND COUNTRY WEEK ANOTHER year, another West Gippsland Cricket Association Country Week campaign that has come up just short. Try as they might, the Warriors couldn’t make it to Friday’s Victorian Country Cricket League (VCCL) Division 3 Melbourne Country Week final at the Bayswater Oval. Cal O’Hare’s men finished fourth in the 10-team competition, with two wins from their four games last week. But they’re spurred on by the result - with the bulk of the side hell-bent on returning next year and achieving their goal. The Warriors’ campaign got off to a dream start on day one, cruising past Wangaratta’s 208 to finish on 5/265 from their 50 overs. Russ Lehman (100 not out) and Tom Hussey (83) continued their brilliant form with the willow with a 140-run opening stand that set up the victory, while Merinda Park leg-spinner Dylan Cuthbertson was sensational in his Warriors debut snaring 4/48 from his 10 overs. But the cricketing gods can be so cruel sometimes. Facing Central Gippsland on day two at Endeavour Hills, the Warriors arrived to find a pitch that could best be described as a rain-soaked minefield. It was horribly under-prepared, and whoever lost the toss would struggle mightily to win the game. Unfortunately for the Warriors, O’Hare lost the toss and the result was disastrous. Balls that were bouncing short of a length would explode, taking chunks out of the pitch as they ballooned past the batsmen’s faces, but fuller balls were doing the same. The likes of Lehman, O’Hare and AJ Walker copped an absolute barrage of body blows on a pitch that looked unplayable. If it wasn’t for an impressive half-century from Cuthbertson and 25 not out from Josh Lownds, the Warriors’ total would have come up far shorter than their 161. But as the day grew older, the pitch
became increasingly batsmen-friendly to the point where Central Gippsland’s innings was played in completely different conditions. Still, the Warriors had them at 8/118 and couldn’t finish the job - eventually bowling them out for 164. The result would prove catastrophic for West Gippsland’s hopes of making the final. Day three saw an enthralling contest in Frankston between the Warriors and Goulburn Murray. Lehman (3/47) continued a dream carnival with a hat-trick, and Kyle Brooke (2/20) very nearly did the same, as the boys from the north-east were dismissed for 219.But the Warriors (210) couldn’t capitalise on a string of starts - with five batsmen reaching 20 but none making a half-century. Day four at Casey Fields showed the extreme contrast of the quality of the sides in Division 3, with the home-town Warriors (276) easily disposing of Seymour and District (9/147). West Gippsland had an even spread of contributors with the bat and was led by another standout opening partnership between Lehman (38) and Hussey (34). With the ball, Cuthbertson (3/30) and Brooke (2/31) again shone. In summing up the Warriors’ week, O’Hare said Cuthbertson and Lehman would both be worthy winners of the Glasscock Medal for the WCGA’s best Country Week player. Cuthbertson has been outstanding since returning to the league from a stint at Victorian Premier side Fitzroy-Doncaster. Not only is he the most dangerous spinner in the WGCA, he’s more than handy with the willow - having compiled some key scores this season. O’Hare also heaped praise on Hussey, the Warriors’ seam bowling brigade, the all-around performance of Merinda Park skipper Danny Diwell, and the coaching efforts of Cardinia’s Simon Parrott. But one of the Warriors’ biggest issues throughout the week was the lack of runs coming from their middle-order batsmen. O’Hare put a lot of the blame at his own feet, and despite he, AJ Walker, Aaron Avery and Parrott making a series

Runners-up take aim By RUSSELL BENNETT WEST GIPPSLAND CRICKET ASSOCIATION REVIEW - ROUND 13 (DAY 1) THOUGH Cardinia has already sewn up top spot on the Premier ladder, the race is well and truly on for the all-important second spot and the right to host a final and an insurance policy against bad weather. Kooweerup is in the box seat, eight competition points clear of both Merinda Park and Tooradin, but the Cobras are in a commanding position after day one against the Seagulls and could yet vault over the Demons. Their game was the only one in town in Premier on Sunday and the strong crowd that turned out to Donnelly Reserve saw the home side’s bowling attack weave its magic against one of the competition’s most imposing batting line-ups. Dylan Cuthbertson continued from where he left off in Country Week, snaring 4/58 from a massive 27 overs. Jess Mathers (2/41) and Jamie Smith (2/23), meanwhile, were also crucial with two wickets apiece. Tooradin’s top four - skipper Tom Hussey (33), Brenton Adams (22), Michael Ralph (21) and Cal O’Hare (30) - all got starts but couldn’t convert them into that one, big decisive score. The Cobras haven’t defeated
Dylan Cuthbertson has drawn high praise from his skipper Danny Diwell, who has labelled him ‘a class player’ who could take that Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS next step. 134541 Tooradin in years but they’re on the right track to changing that this week. The home side faced the final 10 overs of the day and are sitting on 1/15 at stumps. It’s got the full 80 overs to bat this week but the team knows it has got plenty of work ahead. After losing opener Peter Jessop early - run out for just two - Smith strode to the cross in a kind of nightwatchman’s role.
“We spoke about that situation the game after Christmas and Twig (Smith) put his hand up,” Cobras skipper Danny Diwell said. “But he can definitely hold a bat in his own right - he’s no mug. “He’s made plenty of runs in the MPCA and he really deserves some runs this week.” Smith has already made his influence felt in the match with a huge first over of his spell - knocking over
Ralph and Aaron Avery (0) in a double-wicket maiden. Avery copped an absolute peach - a ball that seemed to be heading down middle and leg, before collecting the top of off. O’Hare, meanwhile, was the victim of a calamitous run out, which the umpires carefully deliberated over before he was finally sent on his way. His dismissal for a hard-earned 30 seemed to be the straw that broke the Seagulls’ back for the innings. “I’m disappointed we didn’t make a bigger score,” O’Hare said after the first day’s play. “We were 0/50 and kept losing wickets in the middle order. I thought we’d improved lately with our batting but 160 is not a great score. “Having said that, we believe we can win. “They haven’t beaten us in quite a while.” Elsewhere across the WGCA Devon Meadows (2/42) is in a strong position in its District clash with Pakenham Upper-Toomuc (155), an impressive batting performance by Cranbourne Meadows (8/311) - anchored by skipper Brent Murdoch (75) - has the side on top against Lyndhurst, and Clyde (136) has made life difficult for Nar Nar Goon/Maryknoll (7/39) with a staggering 17 wickets falling on day one alone.
Paynter and Chris Smith could return to the Warriors set-up and this could also have a huge impact. Either way, as WGCA president Brett Armitage said after the Warriors’ final game on Thursday, they’d have the league’s backing “100 per cent”.

Set for relegation CRANBOURNE BOWLS AFTER many years playing in Division 1 metropolitan, Cranbourne is now a certainty to be relegated to Division 2 after a devastating loss to MCC on Saturday. Now 18 points behind the 8th side on the ladder Armadale (9th and 10th sides are relegated), mathematically Cranbourne could sneak in but that seems highly unlikely as they would have to win on all four rinks to pick up 18 points against bottom-of-the-ladder rivals Pakenham and they would then need Armadale to lose on all four rinks against top-of-the-ladder leader Mulgrave. And even if that happens, they still have to make up the 33-shot difference deficit if both sides finish with 112 points each. Division 1 Cranbourne were crushed by 23 shots to MCC and lost on all four rinks. Steve “Krusty Bentley said after the game “we kept with them up to the half way break, and within a few shots but they got the better of us after that and despite our best efforts the harder we tried the worse we got. Results: - Cranbourne Div (1) 60 lost to MCC (1) 83 (R. Travica 12/24, L. Quigg 16/17, M. Bland 17/26, and S. Arthur 15/16). Going great guns HAMPTON PARK BOWLS THERE is only one day left in the home and away bowls season and Hampton Park should have three teams playing finals. Tuesday’s Division 1 will need to defeat Vermont South to guarantee their place. Saturday’s Division 1 and Division 4 will play finals Division 1 on top of the ladder and division 4 currently second. Last Tuesday, Division 1 put up a spirited performance against the strong Mulgrave Country Club but failed to achieve maximum points. The result could have made finals difficult, but clubs in the hunt also lost, dropping Hampton Park to third on the ladder. Jim Westwell, Shane Collins, Peter Hayden and Neville Hendrie again won (21-12) but Dot Carr, Chris Hendrie, Ian Bartlett and Ellen Smith (13-27) and Geoff Ampt, Heather Naismith, Helen Lambert and Denise Eastick (16-23) both lost. Hampton Park (1) 2-50 lost to Mulgrave CC (5) 14-62. Division 2 had better luck, winning at Edithvale. John Nunan, Jos Van Hout, Marion Battaglia and Ray Wood won well (26-13) and Brian Diaper, Ian Kitt, Gwen Clough and Bob Nicol won 17-15. Lou Soligo, June Damon, Keith Damon and Rob Woff were down 4-19 at lunch, and then rallied to lose 16-22 in an overall winning comeback. Hampton Park (2) 14-59 defeated Edithvale (2) 2-50. Saturday Pennant produced a chaotic array of results. Divisions 2 and 4 will be in the finals despite the day’s results. At home, Division 2 played Cranbourne RSL and had a disappointing loss - winning only two rinks. The Parkers still hold top of the
ladder due to Narre Warren defeating Mulgrave Country Club, 18 points to nil. Steve Barnes, Chris Hendrie, Andrew Brandolin and Warwick Hardy won 23-17 and Shane Hardy, Mark Paton, Ian Bartlett and Zak Storm won 21-16. Geoff Ampt, John Nunan, Shannon Micallef and Shane Collins went down 23-32 and Neville Hendrie, Larry Simpson, Sean McDonald and Ken Cobden lost 7-32. Hampton Park (1) 4-80 lost to Cranbourne RSL (1) 14-97. Division 4 ladders remains the same after the top four teams were meant to play each other. Hampton Park (2nd) / Chadstone (3rd) were washed out at Chadstone, and Mulgrave Country Club (1st) / Keysborough (4th) was also washed out at Mulgrave. Division 6 had a slight chance to make the finals but were defeated by Pakenham at Pakenham. Lou Soligo, Jos van Hout, Bill Webb and Craig Richards won 23-18, John Wright, Marion Battaglia, Brian Diaper and Ray Wood won 21-18, but Keith Damon, Rob Woff, Janice Collins and Gavin Wilson lost 16-32. Gerry Cox, Rudi Oost, Bob Nicol and Ian Kitt also lost 9-36. Hampton Park (3) 4-69 lost to Pakenham (3) 14-109. With eight players available, Division 8 had their first win bowling when they played Noble Park at Hampton Park. June Damon, Ann Westwell, Wayne Grimsey and Chris Barnes won 23-14 but Jamie Lehman, Gwen Clough, Keith McCarthy and Bill Holden just went down 1622. Close but no cigar for Cranbourne RSL’s tilt CRANBOURNE RSL BOWLS MID WEEK PENNANT Vermont South 61 d Cranbourne RSL 58. The RSL went down narrowly to Vermont South in only their second loss for the season. A bit of a wake up call just before the finals. A big 20 shot win by John Spencer’s team nearly got them home. Results R. Bligh, C. Butler, T. Bonney J. Spencer 30-10. D. Meulman, M. Hodges, H. Rogers, R. Chapman 14-24. A. Pichard, M. McIntyre, G. Dore, Y. v d Wees 14-27. DIVISION 2 Hampton Park 74 d Cranbourne RSL 97.
Last week was a must win against the bottom team, this week it was first against ninth. It should have been easy for top team Hampton Park. But once again the RSL showed everyone that their best is good enough with an impressive 23-shot win. Mal Watkinson’s team doing most of the damage with a great 25-shot win. Such margins are pretty rare in Division 2. Yvonne van der Wees team did well in winning by nine shots. Results R. Bligh, R. Crawford, J. Spencer, M. Watkinson 32-7. P. Males, J. Black, R. Chapman, Y. v d Wees 32-23. B. Graham, G. Dore, W. Ballard, W. Brannan 16-21.
F. Scicluna, J. Carretero, R. Hansen, K. Hocking 17-23. DIVISION 5 Cranbourne RSL 86 v Mount Waverley 62. A great performance by the team missing four regular bowlers they still proved too good for Mount Waverley. Maree Hodges' team showing the way with a 18-shot win, while Mal Cassano’s team won by 11 shots. Ken Walker’s team were a bit unlucky dropping three shots on the last end to go down by one. Results D. Angee, J. Hart, M. Bobetic, M. Hodges 26-8. M. Ryan, H. Rogers, B. Walsh, M. Cassano 25-14. K. Currie, D. Meulman, R. El-
liott K. Walker 22-23. I. Maat, M. McIntyre, K. Mcleod, J. Vowles 15-17. DIVISION 8 Cardinia Waters 43 d Cranbourne RSL 3 39. The game was close all day but Cardinia Waters were never headed and went onto win by four shots. Our other Division 8 team will get to play them in two weeks in the first final, so we hope to be able to turn the tables. Results H. Reefman, G. Jones, J. Grant, P. Leake 18-20. P. Zimmerman, M. Pearson, B. Eagle, D. Ambrose 21-23.
