■ Cardinia’s sweet tooth is leaving a sour aftertaste ...
We’ve gone soft By GEORGIA WESTGARTH CARDINIA Shire’s residents are guzzling down sugary soft drinks at a rate far greater than those in other municipalities. And our sweet addiction is having a heavy impact on our health and our waistlines. Some 17.5 per cent of Cardinia Shire adults have a can of soft drink each and every day. The Victorian state average is just 12.4 per cent. And that’s said to be a major factor in half of Cardinia’s residents being overweight or obese, with poor diet the main contributor. Accredited Practising Dietitian, Elizabeth Magnusson from Appetite For Life Dietetics in Beaconsfield said she was not surprised by the findings. “The main reason for weight gain when consuming soft drink can be due to an excess of overall energy - we don’t feel satisfied after drinking soft drink compared to eating the same calories from food,” Ms Magnusson said. “The total energy intake throughout the day will be more because we still eat the same amount of food but with the added calories from the soft drink.“ Those who live close to supermarkets are more likely to buy nutritious food, while people who live close to fast food outlets more regularly gobble a fatty snack. Ms Magnusson said many of her clients didn’t realise how much soft drink contributed to a person’s overall health, sleep
quality and weight status. “People come to me for many different reasons, but often realise their problems are all interconnected,” she said. She has found many of her clients don’t realise the amount of caffeine hidden in the fizzy drink, leading to a restless night’s sleep. “Soft drink doesn’t contain many main nutrients that we need and get from the other five food groups - if you compare it to a glass of milk, soft drink doesn’t help us from a nutritional point of view,” Ms Magnusson said. The report, released in May last year, also found local residents don’t eat adequate amounts of fruit and vegetables. “It’s very common for clients not to meet the recommended vegetable servings, and it’s very concerning,” Ms Magnusson said. Only 8.7 per cent of adults in the shire meet the recommended five serves per day and just 37.3 per cent of children aged 0-16 meet the minimum vegetable servings. Healthy Together Cardinia Shire found the easy access to the energy dense, nutrient poor food compared to healthy snack food was a big contributor to the obesity problem. “A good start is to swap it, don’t stop it,” Ms Magnusson said. “The key is slow changes it’s a matter of setting out small and sustainable changes to the habits so the effort isn’t in vain.”

Civic reception THE Governor of Victoria will visit the Cardinia Shire for the second time in just four months to officially open the new Cardinia Shire Civic Centre in Officer next Wednesday. His Excellency Alex Chernov and his wife Elizabeth will be shown around the new headquarters by mayor Leticia Wilmot, chief executive officer Garry McQuillan and councillors. The event, held in the Civic Centre outdoor plaza, will include a traditional welcome and smoking ceremony by a local Elder as well as a performance by the All Together Choir. Students from Officer Specialist School will also attend. Cr Wilmot said council was honoured to welcome the governor back to the shire after he toured the area in October last year. She encouraged the community to attend. “As more residents move into Cardinia Shire and more businesses and community services are established, this civic centre will become the heart of

Service performance to satisfaction? By BEN CAMERON THE annual community satisfaction survey conducted by Local Government Victoria will be undertaken within Cardinia Shire during February and March. The phone survey samples 400 people in the shire and
measures people’s perception of council’s overall performance and also performance in a number of services. People are asked to identify themselves as users or non-users of council services, as well as providing their perception of how well the service is delivered and how im-
portant that service is to them. People must be over 18 to take part in the survey. Results from the survey will be mid-year and will be presented to council after initial analysis. The results will also be made available to the community on council’s website.

Rotaract way to interact By LACHLAN MOORHEAD THE Casey Cardinia Rotaract Club was officially chartered on Sunday after months of preparation and planning. The new Rotaract group, a subsidiary of Rotary but catering specifically for 18 to 30-year-olds, was inducted as an official club over the weekend, with 14 members involved and several more on the cards. Casey Cardinia Rotaract president Ben Hill said Sunday’s luncheon served as both a 110th anniversary for Rotary, and the launch of the new Rotaract club. Ben, who was the 2014 Casey Young Citizen of the Year, said he’d had no involvement with Rotary before now, but couldn’t resist the role when approached. “I really love leading young people to achieve great things in our community, to better the youth and to help people and make things a lot more fun,” Ben, who just turned 19, said. “It’s very important to get more young people involved
in clubs and the community through Rotaract. “A lot of people are involved in sporting clubs, and the Casey area has a lot of older people in community service clubs, but there was definitely a need for something in the younger age group.” With its nearest partner being the Mornington Peninsula Rotaract, the new Casey Cardinia group will focus on the sustainability and upkeep of both municipalities. Some of the key priorities for the Casey Rotaract group will include the sustainability of the environment, keeping public areas tidy, first aid, food handling, international projects and finding a neighbouring sister club overseas. “My vision is to get the word out to young people that Rotaract is a great new way to meet new friends, be social and grow,” Ben said. “There’s no maximum to the number of members we can have. Generally, when clubs get too busy members can feel

disconnected, so if it does grow, we might split into two. “We’ll be looking to double our membership over the next year and half,” he said. Kirra Pickering, a 21-yearold member of the Mornington Peninsula Rotaract, has been crucial in campaigning to get the new group off the ground. Kirra drew on the support of her grandparents Lyn and Ian and other Narre Warren and Casey Rotarians as she prepared to start up the Casey Cardinia club. “Rotaract is a youth voluntary organisation, motivating each other as young individuals and through participating and building a social group,” Kirra told the News last year. “From having a group of young people doing it, it’s a different perspective. “We have different priorities for what we want for our future.” For more information visit www.caseycardiniarotaract.org, and to join contact ben.hill@ caseycardinia.rotaract.com.

Streak of ‘bad luck’ By LACHLAN MOORHEAD A NARRE Warren South woman has been left shattered after her car was stolen from her house and wrecked following a frightening police chase through the suburbs of Casey this week. Julia Trofimiuk’s silver Holden Cruze was stolen from under her nose last Wednesday 11 February when she left her Teal Court house unattended for just 10 minutes to chase after her pet staffy cross, Beemer, who had escaped down the street. She bought the car only two months ago, and the devastation is part of a series of misfortune for Ms Trofimiuk, whose father is battling cancer, and was forced to change all her house locks. “I was really upset, we’ve had a real string of bad luck lately,” she said. “I just can’t believe someone would do this.” Ms Trofimiuk’s car had been missing for five days when police were called to an Endeavour Hills property on Monday 16 February, around 11am, where the car had been sighted. Upon their arrival, a man took off in the stolen car and the police drove after him, but they were forced to call off the pursuit when the offender, reaching speeds up to 140km/h in an 80km/h zone, sideswiped a tree. The police air wing was also called in to track the driver. It’s understood the offender pulled over to the side of the road when contacted by officers and then took off again, before police deployed stop strips. The strips were used on Thompsons Road near Merinda Park railway station and managed to puncture two
of the car’s tyres, but the man is alleged to have kept driving on just two rims and two wheels. The offender’s luck ran out when he pulled into a BP service station at the end of Thompsons Road and police swarmed on the car. The man was interviewed by police this week and remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court next month. The day the car was stolen Ms Trofimiuk, 28, said she left her keys on the bench before chasing after her dog which had jumped over the fence and run away about 6pm. It’s believed the dog was coaxed from the property. “I heard the fence rattling, and I ran out the back door and saw Beemer running down the street,” Ms Trofimiuk said. “I ran after him but left the back door unlocked. Some people stopped in their cars and helped me get my dog back; I was only gone for maybe about 10 minutes. “By the time I got back home, my car was gone. I thought my fiance had come home, grabbed the keys and come out to look for us, but evidently someone has come into the house through the back door, grabbed the keys off the bench and driven off with my car.” The car’s wheels and suspension were ruined in Monday’s pursuit and Ms Trofimiuk is unsure whether she and her fiance, Luke, will be able to pay for the repairs. It’s believed Ms Trofimiuk’s stolen car was also used in a burglary involving two offenders on Friday 13 February at St Peters College in Cranbourne. CCTV footage shows the offenders using a sledge hammer to break

Ride on… ridden off PEARCEDALE holiday-goers arrived home to find their house had been robbed. Sometime between 26 December and 14 January it is alleged someone has gained access to the garage of the home along Queens Road. It is believed the offenders have forced open the window later taking a Husqvarna lawn mower, car ramps and an air compressor. They also took other assorted tools. The total value of the items was around $6000. Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Car ransacked A NUMBER of valuable items were taken from a car in Cranbourne West last week. The Blue Mazda CX9 was on Navarre Drive between 3pm and 10.15pm on Tuesday 10 February when it was allegedly broken into. An iPad, pram, backpack and other personal items valued at around $2310 were taken. Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

THE volunteers at the Andrews Centre in Endeavour Hills don’t help the needy to gain recognition. But that doesn’t stop the Endeavour Hills community from thanking and rewarding their local crisis and counselling centre. The money raised from the Rotary Club of Endeavour Hill’s upcoming Golf Day later this month will be largely donated to the Andrews Centre to assist in its work. While recently helping the Andrews Centre with a $7000 renovation of its kitchen, Endeavour Hills Rotarian John O’Reilly said his club was blown away by the selfless work carried out by the facility’s volunteers for the less fortunate. “They work in the community, we work for the community, and these people are just doing amazing things,” he said of the Andrews Centre. “They are all professional people who have retired and they volunteer their time. “We were so impressed with what they do and we thought let’s not just do the kitchen but let’s also throw some money at them, too.” While various other charities will also benefit from funds raised at the Golf Day, sponsored by major partner Bendigo Bank, Mr O’Reilly said the Andrews Centre would be the main beneficiary. “When you think about people who can’t speak English and can’t get a job, when they haven’t got food - there’s so many basic things that the Andrews Centre helps out with,” he said.
From left, John O'Reilly, Bob Powell and Bendigo Bank's Jason Pater. 134528 “They’re very important, in my opinion, and it’s done with love. They’re very genuine and that’s what blew us away.” The Golf Day, which will take place at the Cranbourne Golf Club
on Monday 23 February from 12.30pm, was started all the way back in 1986 by the club’s original chairman, Bob Powell. Mr Powell will also be at the event this year at which participants

Drug centre plan mooted By BRIDGET SCOTT A DRUG rehabilitation centre which will be funded by the State Government has been proposed for the City of Casey. City of Casey councillor Geoff Ablett made the suggestion at a council meeting on Tuesday night and said he hoped the State Government would support the idea, given the high costs associated with this type of centre. Councillor Ablett said he had had a number of phone calls over the past two years from concerned parents who needed somewhere to send their children who had been drugaffected. “They have told me it would cost them too much money,” he said. A notice was passed at the council meeting last night
which states that council would write to the Minister for Health Martin Foley to meet with council and interested councillors to investigate the possibility of an ‘open space’ rehabilitation centre for those suffering from drug abuse and addiction in the City of Casey. It would also be open to the broader community in South East Melbourne. Councillor Ablett explained that the ‘open space’ facility would be a live-in, and would help its guests re-engage with the community. “Let’s get to these people early before they wind up in jail,” he said. He said the facility should include counselling sessions and the opportunity to take part in recreational activities. “It’s not like being in jail,”
he said. Councillor Ablett said he had seen other models in the city similar to this, and was considering possible locations for this type of centre. “It’s about engagement and re-engaging them, so they don’t feel isolated,” he said. “You need a farm setting where there is plenty of activities.” He said he also planned to raise another motion in coming weeks which would suggest the idea of referring those who committed petty crimes to a centre such as this, rather than jail. “That’s better than being in a cell,” he said. He said it would be a terrific concept for the City of Casey, which had “alarming” statistics in regards to drugs.

Roundabout finally fixed By LACHLAN MOORHEAD A HAZARDOUS Hampton Park intersection will finally see a long-awaited upgrade, the State Government confirmed this week. But an avid campaigner who was pivotal in putting together a 1000-signature petition roughly five years ago calling for action at the intersection of Pound and Shrives roads believes traffic lights are the main priority for the site but have not been included in the proposed plan. Narre Warren South MP Judith Graley was joined by local residents on Tuesday to confirm the $5.2 million upgrade, expected to be finished by June 2017. The upgrade will see a two-lane roundabout installed at the intersection to improve safety.
Planning is underway for the project which will also include service relocations, new guard fencing, bus stop relocations, tree removal and new street lighting. “We’re committed to ending the neglect and will get on with the job of making our roads safer,” Ms Graley said. “Thank you to everyone who jumped aboard our campaign for safety improvements at this intersection, it’s through your efforts that we have secured this much needed upgrade.” While welcoming the upgrade, Narre Warren resident Kylie Christmas indicated that she and others had been calling for traffic lights to be installed at the site since they started campaigning. She also voiced
concern that a roundabout may not be enough to ease congestion. “I’m not sure if a roundabout is the answer. I would like to see a reconsideration for lights at that site,” she said. “But anything’s better than what it is now.” When asked by the News if traffic lights at the intersection were on the cards, Ms Graley said VicRoads believed the proposed upgrade would reduce the number and severity of crashes at the site. “Road safety experts advise that the preferred option at this location was a roundabout due to a number of factors including land acquisition and improved safety for all road users,” she said.
Cowardly parkland assault By BRIDGET SCOTT A MAN was left with a broken jaw and a severe eye injury after he was allegedly robbed and assaulted while walking through parklands in Narre Warren earlier this month. The victim was approached when walking through a park on the corner of Darling Way and Upton Crescent. Police believe two offenders have approached the victim and used
force to steal his cigarettes. It is alleged they also demanded his wallet, however when the victim refused one offender punched him from behind and knocked him unconscious. It’s believed the victim had his mobile phone as well as his car and house keys stolen, and was treated by paramedics before he was taken to Monash Medical Centre in Clayton.
One of the males was described as Caucasian, slim, around 175 centimetres tall and wearing dark clothing including a hoodie. He is also believed to be around 18 or 19 years of age. The other man was also described as Caucasian with a solid build and around 170 centimetres. Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

clearing the grass and scrub. The council also suggested a number of ways that residents and business owners could discourage snakes, which included removing hiding places, keeping gardens tidy, reducing food sources and placing pet water bowls away from houses. “If residents see snakes on their land they are encouraged to contact the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning on 136 186 or a licensed snake catcher in the first instance,” Mr Smith said. Resident Lisa Watts said she had a snake on her property a
few weeks ago which had slithered past her front door. “One came from our neighbour’s front yard and got under the fence,” she said. Mr Khoury, who has owned the milk bar for 22 years, said he wants council to “clear the jungle” and have the park maintained. “It’s the only strip of shops we have here in Junction Village and, sadly, nobody is stopping by,” he said. “We are supposed to be seen from the highway. “There is an issue and it needs to be addressed.”

A FRUSTRATED shop owner from Junction Village has blamed a snake infestation and overgrown bushland for his lack of business. Joe Khoury who runs the milk bar in Junction Village has said “nobody is stopping by” and said the area is plagued with snakes every summer. “They’re everywhere, it’s happening all over,” he said. Mr Khoury urged City of Casey council to maintain the parklands behind his business where he believes the snakes come from. He said the land is overgrown and uninviting. “There is not one passing trade because the park is a jungle,” he said. Councillor Geoff Ablett raised a notice at a council meeting last month which asked the council to consider the possibility of employing a snake catcher during the warmer months. However an officer’s report presented to Tuesday night’s council meeting said the “council does not provide a wildlife (snake catcher) service for private properties during the hotter months”. The officer’s report also recommended that the council continues to fully utilise the services available to manage wildlife such as snakes provided by the State Government. Casey’s acting manager for environment Warren Smith said the council had met with traders in Junction Village to discuss

Hot potatoes By GEORGIA WESTGARTH A POTATO in a bucket contest was held on Sunday 15 February by the Rotary Club of Cranbourne to raise funds for the Blairlogie Living and Learning organisation. About $6000 was raised along with spuds galore and three awards went out to the fastest potato peeler, the biggest potato crop and the biggest potato, weighing in at 240 grams. “Some people used their own secret remedies, others put stones in the bottom or straw, all sorts of things were tried and tested, some people used garden compost or potting mix as well,” Tom Schreurs from the Rotary Club of
Cranbourne said. The contest was a success with about 120 potato growers buying a 25 litre bucket and potato seeds for $30 each. The buckets were sold in September and growers had six months to grow their spuds.“We had a barbecue on harvest day and weighed the spuds, the largest crop weighed a kilo with about nine potatoes,” Mr Schreurs said. Blairlogie and the Rotary Club of Cranbourne are planning to make the spud contest an annual event. “It was a fantastic day and was enjoyed by all, a fun way to raise awareness for Blairlogie,” Mr Schreurs said. chief executive Carolyn Carr said she will be seeking advice from potato experts next year. “I attempted the challenge without much success. “I don’t think I was the only one on the day that had their bucket emptied with just a pile of dirt to show,” Ms Carr said. “It sounds like such a simple thing but it’s actually very tricky,” she said. The money raised will go towards equipment and resources at the Cranbourne South organisation. “I think it has inspired people to try and produce a better crop of spuds next year,” Ms Carr said.

Maternity Care at SJOG Berwick Hospital
Mums in need of mothering WHEN a new baby arrives at St John of God Berwick Hospital, the maternity team like to mother the new mums. With recovery, feeding, sleeping and bonding taking priority for the new parents, St John of God midwives go the extra mile to ensure all the other bits and pieces are taken care of. Each private maternity room is comfortably fitted with ensuite, TV, phone, plug-in internet access and a bar fridge. New parents can relax and enjoy quality time with their new baby in comfort and privacy. Delicious and nutritious meals are delivered to each room and partners can also enjoy a hot meal for a small charge. Each afternoon a special Happy Hour treat trolley visits each maternity patient, stocked with a scrumptious selection of cakes, pastries, fresh fruit, drinks and, most importantly, the not-recommended throughout pregnancy, soft cheese and crackers. This opportunity for indulgence each afternoon is a quiet moment for the new parents to enjoy feeling pampered during this special time in their lives. “There is so much to learn for the new parents. “We like to take extra special care of them so they can use their time in hospital to get to know their new bub and so they can go home rested and educated for what lies ahead,” said Joyce Coyle, Maternity Unit Manager. The rest of the family hasn’t been forgotten either. Partners are very welcome to stay overnight and complementary accommodation is provided in the new mother’s room. New grandparents have the opportunity to participate in the Grandparent Class (bookings required), giving them the chance to refresh their

skills and be brought up to date with the latest techniques and trends in baby care. Lisa Evans, Director of Nursing said: “Grandparents can be such a help to the new family when a baby is born. “Our aim is to ensure they are on the same page as the new parents and can be involved in a supportive and positive way for everyone.” Mum can relax while older children visit and enjoy a story in the Story-Time Pod, located in the Maternity Ward (a small cost applies). For some families, receiving post natal care is more comfortable and convenient at home. When it is deemed safe to do so, new mothers have the opportunity to head home soon after birth and receive a visit from the Midwives at Home program. One of the highly qualified midwives will offer advice and guidance on sleeping, settling and feeding and general health and wellbeing for both mum and baby. The family will also receive a pack containing vouchers for lunch for two people at 81 Bar and Restaurant and Gold Class cinema and a massage voucher for Berwick Pharmacy. St John of God Berwick Hospital is flexible, if mums have specific needs all they need to do is ask. Staff will always go above and beyond, ensuring new families are able to enjoy the precious arrival of a new baby. They take care of the small things so that they can focus on what is most important - the new family. Schools within the school Strangers often are astonished when I tell them that Beaconhills College has around 3000 students. It sounds like a large school. It is a large school – but the reality is that the numbers are actually quite deceiving. What we offer at Beaconhills is five sub-schools within the College, where each student is part of a close-knit and supportive community. There is no sense of ‘feeling lost’ in the crowd and there are some very significant benefits for each child. A key advantage of this structure is the opportunity for leadership. In the old school system, students would have to wait until their senior years to become leaders. Now they have a number of opportunities to lead in a variety of areas that may reflect their strengths, from performing arts to sport or community service. The structure also makes each student’s pathway through the College more seamless. No longer do we have the sudden jump from one core class teacher in primary school to multiple subject teachers in high school, with Middle School providing the gradual transition between the various year levels. I invite you to contact Beaconhills on 1300 002 225 to join a weekly tour of either our Pakenham or Berwick Campus. Tony Sheumack Headmaster
Founded in 1970, Maranatha Christian School is the longest serving Christian school in Victoria, built on the foundations of Christian discipleship, personal integrity, academic excellence and community service. It is a delight to be principal of Maranatha Christian School, which is a wonderful school community, committed to working together to ensure the best outcomes for all students. Maranatha celebrates 45 years of Christian educational leadership in 2015 and offers ELC – Year 12 across three sites. In addition to its rigorous academic pathway that challenges students to think creatively and apply what they have learned, the school also offers a fully integrated and well-rounded pathway for VCAL students that supports them in their future careers. With dedicated, talented and caring staff, a Maranatha student is well prepared to discover their God given gifts and talents and so providing the skills for students to become leaders in a wide variety of fields. Raising children in today’s world and ensuring a quality, affordable education is challenging, so the strong partnership between school and home, and Maranatha’s dedication to Christ-centered learning supports parents in their decisions. There is no better wish that we have as parents but to see our children maximize what God has given them by using those gifts to the benefit of others. School is a journey that we travel together. I look forward to your partnership as we help boys and girls move from today’s students to tomorrow’s leaders. In doing so, we strive to achieve our utmost for His glory.

It has been my privilege to lead Chairo’s Pakenham campus since it began in 1998 and to see it develop into the vibrant community of over 600 students from Kinder to Year 12 that it is today. Students are able to start as three-year-olds at our beautiful, well-resourced campus and transition smoothly from Kinder to Junior School (Grades Prep to 4), and then to Middle School (Years 5 to 8) and Senior School (Years 9 to 12). Our goal is to give students every opportunity to learn, excel and grow in a nurturing and challenging environment. We provide a range of experiences and opportunities as part of a diverse and rigorous education. We value and affirm that each individual possesses God-given gifts and we desire that students will mature into strong Christian men and women who are active within the community. Our mission is to provide excellence in Christ-centred education in partnership with families within a caring Christian community. An education at Chairo is founded upon a partnership between family and school, and we encourage parents to be active participants in the educational process. For further information, visit us at www.chairo.vic. edu.au or contact our Enrolment Coordinator, Fiona Clacy (5942 5632 or fclacy@chairo.vic.edu.au). Kooweerup Secondary College is an inspiring and vibrant learning centre with a very strong community behind it. I am always impressed with the fantastic support for the College from local groups in the community. Students and staff are constantly working together to improve the school in ways such as obtaining excellent results in the VCE. The College has grown in the past six years but we are stabilising to around 1000 students. During this growth we have maintained a strong sense of tradition and respect. The College values a positive school climate and works hard to extend the students through the Performing Arts, Sport and Pastoral Care. I strongly desire students to have a wide range of experiences during their schooling. The College has a strong transition program and works successfully with a number of local primary schools to ensure a smooth start to secondary college life for our new students. There is also a SEAL (Select Entry Accelerated Learning) program running at the College. In 2015, our Year 7 to Year 9 students use iPads and our senior students use Netbooks or another device from home. We are also undergoing a significant building program, using funds from a $7 million dollar government grant, to implement not only new buildings but a new way of developing and delivering curriculum to our students. At Kooweerup Secondary College, everyone is encouraged to achieve their personal best.

Pakenham Secondary College is committed to providing all students with learning opportunities that are designed to develop socially responsible citizens and build pathways to their future. The school offers a diverse curriculum with the aim of providing each child with the opportunity to advance to their preferred pathway upon exiting the school. The College is focused on delivering enhanced student learning outcomes through a teaching program that aims to cater for the needs of the individual. In their senior years, students can access the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) as well as the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) while at the same time undertaking a TAFE based certificate or a School Based Apprenticeship. Our students, upon leaving the College, undertake a variety of education, training and employment options. These include University based degrees, Certificate or Diploma based courses at TAFE and apprenticeships or traineeships. I am very proud of the hard work and dedication of the teachers and support staff at Pakenham Secondary College and we will always strive to provide a high quality education to the young people who attend our institution. This is our privilege. If you would like more information about the school please ring on 5945 1433 or visit our web page at www.pakenhamsc.vic.edu.au

PARKS UNITE THE COMMUNITY WITH multiple parklands and avenues linking neighbourhoods, Highgrove is designed with family and community in mind. Highgrove merges the best of traditional family living with harmonious neighbourhood planning and friendly design. With a strong emphasis on community and open spaces, Highgrove unites four precincts around a beautifully landscaped central neighbourhood park while smaller
parks are nestled within the heart of each precinct. These parklands will provide attractive, functional surrounds for a range of community activities from local market days to casual sporting events or an idyllic backdrop for a weekend picnic. Knitting these parklands together is a local recreational loop which is perfect for walking, running and cycling or even rollerblading. The thoughtfully considered layout
of Highgrove ensures there is plenty of opportunity to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle which is connected to nature and the community. Both the Willow and Ailesbury stage releases have been well received by the public and now have limited lots remaining and, as a result of this demand, Brown Property Group has just released its next stage, The Kelton release. •ThehighlyanticipatedKeltonland release features 20 lots that are ideally

AGENTS BLEED BY EXAMPLE ON FRIDAY, some of the team from Barry Plant Pakenham visited the mobile blood bank at the Cardinia Culture Centre to give blood. “It’s one of those things that you want to do, and know you should do, but always keep putting off," Garry says. The team at Barry Plant Pakenham were very excited to give blood and suggest that more people should donate. “The process was so simple and to be honest, it didn’t hurt at all,” Garry said.
Christine says: “The benefit of what we are doing today will actually help three people’s lives and it also makes you feel like you have done something special - I’ve given blood before but I should do it more often.” The team at Barry Plant Pakenham would like to ask all local businesses to try and get their staff to attend and give blood as a group, as it makes it more fun and you are more likely to actually do it if you attend with work colleagues.

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST
Beer trade brewing nicely By LACHLAN MOORHEAD A RE-BRANDED brewery in Doveton is fast becoming the go-to watering hole in the state’s south-east. The Brownstone Micro Brewery, attached to the Atura Hotel, is helping to re-invigorate Doveton as a desirable location with its promise of unique new brews and diverse employment opportunities. The brewery was rebranded by Chifley Hotels when the company took over the Atura as part of its Amalgamated Holdings Portfolio in late October. “We inherited the brewery and changed the name, it was previously called the Coldwater Creek Brewery and we changed it to Brownstone,” Atura Hotel general manager Lisa Parker said. “We also inherited their pilsener recipe and have since created our own pale ale, and our brewer is busy coming up with the recipe for a new brew.” Trademarking its two current distinct brews as the Brownstone Pale Ale and the Brownstone Pilsener, Ms Parker said the micro-brewery drew patrons from across the City of Casey and beyond.
She said there were no other facilities like it on the way out town until you reached the Mornington Peninsula. “It’s certainly our point of difference, given there’s nothing else like it in the area,” she said. “Our closest competitors are in the Morning Peninsula, we’re a pit stop along the way.” The 500-litre brewery, built on the Atura site four years ago, was recognised by Chifley as a facility that could be expanded and opened beyond its regular dinner hours. “We’ve got a really strong following of local corporates, and we’d like to develop more of a family trade,” Ms Parker said. “In March we’ll be opening for both lunch and dinner. “Craft beer is increasing year and year in popularity and we’re also looking into the possibility of botting our beers and developing our recipes further to keep it interesting for the local market.” Ms Parker believes a local market around Doveton is beginning to offer new opportunities as well as new lagers.

TREVOR Ratcliffe knows a thing or two about business and personal finance. That’s why the retired public servant is launching the Skills for Life information sessions tonight at 7.30pm, beginning with tips on money management. The Everyday Finances session will be presented by Lisa Hansen from the Casey North Community Information and Support Service (CISS) with the workshop aimed at showing the attendees how to best organise their finances to avoid getting stuck in debt. “It’s about money management and managing your budget and we will also discover how to stretch your income further,” Skills For Life co-ordinator Mr Ratcliffe said. “It will also show people what resources are available to help them, as well as how to save money on utility bills and knowing
your rights and responsibilities,” he said. Mr Ratcliffe is planning for seven information sessions that will run up to June. The topics of the sessions, which are to be held at the Community Room at Narre Warren North Uniting Church, will range from family relationships, baby care, men’s health, mental health and dementia. Mr Ratcliffe said the announcement of his project had been welcomed by local community organisations that are keen to expand their audience. “I’ve always had a bit of a passion about helping people to help themselves, whether it comes back to a feeling of self-worth or self-esteem,” he said. “Even if people aren’t having financial problems, we’d all like to afford a better lifestyle.” For more information, contact Trevor Ratcliffe on 0428 472 030 or 9700 5061 or email narrenorth. uc@gmail.com.
Welcome to make your own Mac By LACHLAN MOORHEAD DOVETON McDonald’s will add another 40 jobs to its staff roster in the coming weeks as the restaurant launches a new food program. The Doveton eatery, found on the Princes Highway, will be one of the first McDonald’s stores in Australia to unveil the Create Your Taste initiative, which will see staff at the facility boosted from roughly 90 employees to 130. The new program will allow customers to create their own burgers through using a touch screen and invites them to sit down before their meal is then brought out to them. Australia is the first country to trial the program. McDonald’s Doveton operations consultant Duy Tran said the new initiative,
which is set to be rolled out nation-wide, fuelled a need for additional workers. He also said while majority of the new employees will be given part-time contracts, there will still be some fulltime position in the offing. “It will be mostly casual wages, and mainly part-time, but we may have the occasional one or two full-timers,” he said. “This is creating jobs; it’s a new concept to get more customers coming through. “The feedback has been absolutely awesome.” McDonald’s Doveton restaurant manager Clare Roggentin said the new job openings will also provide more people in the Doveton community with the chance to complete their Certificate III in retail.
“We actually just signed up a whole lot of new people and this is an opportunity for the people we’re bringing in,” she said. “They can jump on board and do their Certificate III in retail. We try and encourage our staff to do that because it means their training is better and the service they give is better as well. “With the additional staff, that opportunity’s going to be available for them as well.” McDonald’s Doveton licensee Howard Armitage said he was “proud to provide employment, training and growth opportunities to staff”, while being able to extend those opportunities to an additional “40 locals”. THE chickens have come home to roost in Berwick. A total of 14 chicks have now hatched in their temporary home at the Villa Maria aged care residence, as part of the Henny Penny Hatching program introduced to the Avebury Drive facility last year. “The residents have loved to sit and watch the chicks as they’ve hatched from their shells,” Villa Maria Berwick Lifestyle co-ordinator Carolyn Buckley said. “Interacting with and holding the chicks has provided a great sensory experience, particularly for residents living with dementia. “And many of the residents have been reminiscing about their childhoods when they collected eggs from chickens at home, bringing back happy memories.” Ms Buckley said some of the new chicks would find permanent homes with staff members, while others would be distributed via the hatching program. Established in 1907 as the Catholic Braille Writers Association, Villa Maria has grown to become one of Victoria’s largest not-for-profit providers of disability, education and senior services with more than 60 programs supporting 5000 people across the state and southern New South Wales.

A BRAND new playgroup at the Balla Balla Community Centre will provide another alternative for young families in the area. Manager of the centre Maree Cullinan said feedback from the community prompted the creation of a new playgroup which held its first session on 5 February this year. “We always knew we would have one and we thought it was time,” she said. “The playgroup was set up for the local community - we wanted to give them the first option.” Ms Cullinan said they hoped to help build networks between local families and already have 25 children as part of the group. She said given the Balla Balla centre already has a number of expressions of interest they plan to begin another one next term. She said her group also made the deci-

While still a separate entity to the toy library, the Balla Balla Community Centre plans to throw its support behind the library and Ms Cullinan has urged families to get involved.
“We want to get them back on track and don’t want to lose valuable resources,” Ms Cullinan said. “Once you get the momentum going, the community see the value.” Michelle Webster will coordinate the new playgroup which will be centred on families and building friendships. “That’s how a community works,” Ms Cullinan said.

Warriors suit up for battle
Silverbacks dream big By RUSSELL BENNETT
By RUSSELL BENNETT THE new-look Pakenham Warriors have made a strong start to 2015 following their first practice games of the year on Saturday night. The Division-2 Big V men pushed the Division-1 Geelong Supercats to the brink, before falling short by the narrowest of margins 67-66. The Warriors’ women, meanwhile went down to Frankston 3829 in their first competitive hit out on the eve of their debut Big V season. The men’s team, coached by former Pakenham star Jeff Reid, started strong to trail by just a point at half-time in a scrappy contest. Athletic forward Hayden Davey and guards Craig Drew and Savin Lopez returned from last season’s team, while former Warriors’ point guard Jay Ferriere also returned to action. It’s not yet certain whether or not Ferriere will suit up for the Warriors in the season proper, but his performance on Saturday night was definitely an encouraging sign for both he, and the team’s fans alike. He played 30 minutes at the point guard position, while newcomers Paul Phillips and Simo Pajdic also impressed with 11 and 10 points respectively. While the first practice game for the season is mostly about dusting off the cobwebs and logging oncourt minutes, there were plenty

The team is stacked with a combination of height and athleticism, and while fans will clearly see an up-tempo style of offense throughout the season, it was its defensive effort that would have pleased them most. “I was just really happy with the intensity of the guys throughout the whole game,” Reid said soon after
the final buzzer. “They (the Supercats) were a bigger squad but we didn’t get monstered by them so I was really pleased with that as well.” Reid said newcomer Mike Godfrey was particularly impressive in his first game for the club, while for the Warriors’ women Jamie Armstrong (9 points and 6 rebounds) and Kylie Thomson (9 points and 5 rebounds) were the standouts.
AFTER a debut season of astonishing development, the Pakenham Silverbacks are ready to take another huge step forward under new head coach Paul Tindall. The new mentor isn’t afraid to dream big in his first year with the team either - aiming to win the Gridiron Victoria Division 2 crown for the second year running after guiding the Gippsland Gladiators to the title last season. Tindall is entering his 14th year in the sport with experience across three states - Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria as both a player and coach and winning multiple titles. There isn’t much he hasn’t seen in gridiron at the Australian grassroots level. In fact, he’s also got some experience in Canadian football after having spent a year there travelling. Tindall has just come off a four-year stint with the Gladiators and, after reaching the team’s ultimate goal last season, he said the timing was right for a new challenge. “I was very happy with what I saw from Pakenham,” he said. “I saw and heard the direction they were taking and it’s something I’d always hoped the Gladiators
Paul Tindall has already hit the ground running as the Pakenham Silverbacks' new coach. Picture: SUPPLIED were going to do. “The dedication and off-field direction were fantastic, and just things like the fact that these guys as a team went to a sports training venue and started working as a group and doing gym work together. “It was more of a professional attitude, which is what I was looking for.” Tindall said he saw plenty of upside for the Silverbacks.
“I look at the way the Pakenham team has developed in just 12 months and I think they have the drive and ability to go much further,” he said. “It’s a new challenge for me. “I spent four years with Gippsland and took them to the Division 2 Championship last year and won, and I plan to do the same for Pakenham.” Tindall, who still lives in Morwell, said the Silverbacks’ future development was crucial. “Playing against the Silverbacks last year and seeing the support they had on the sidelines - and on the road every week it was better than what some teams who’ve been in the competition for six or seven years have got,” he said. “It’s great to see and it’s now about progressing from there both on and off the field to ensure that the players and fans both get the best value, and we bring the trophy back to Pakenham.”

THE defending champions are out to bring the Chaos Cup from Newborough back home to Bunyip. The Bunyip Strikers - playing out of the FFV Metropolitan Leagues - lived up to their moniker at last year’s Football Chaos Cup, striking a 2-0 grand-final victory over Croydon Ranges. Bunyip broke a few local hearts last year en route to holding the cup aloft, defeating Pakenham SC in a semi-final penalty shootout after scores were locked at 1-1 after regulation time. Bunyip Strikers aren’t the only locals looking to bring the cup back to the south east though. The newly formed Pakenham United - merging Pakenham SC and Cardinia United JSC this off-season - will take to the field in its first official campaign this year before taking to Metropolitan League 2 and Metropolitan League 4 in a bid for its third FFV champion-

Here’s one for mum and sis! By JARROD POTTER FROM baking heat to driving snow, Reece Caldecourt’s start to 2015 has certainly taken him places. Caldecourt, 17, from Pakenham, was selected for the School Sport Australia (SSA) soccer team, touring Great Britain recently. The side squared off in 10 games against clubs and schools from England, Wales, Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland in the January-February tour. Caldecourt knew the English soccer conditions better than most of his team mates - having lived in the motherland until he was 11. It was a strange homecoming of sorts for the Melbourne Victory National Youth League (NYL) as he donned the greenand-gold while facing off against his former countrymen. “It was quite strange considering everyone was giving me quite a bit of grief about it - ‘playing against your old side Reece you better do well’ and that was about as far as it went,” Caldecourt said. “Just to play against them (English teams) and get a few results against them felt good. “Taking in the entire experience - and the superb on-field game. “It was really good - great experience just as I thought it would be,” Caldecourt said. “It was great fun but also a really good challenge against all the good schools the international school teams to see what the benchmark was like over there compared to here.” Playing in front of his mum and family
was the best of his highlights on the trip as the 17-year-old right back/wing slotted a rare goal to give the Aussies the win against the England Independent Schools. “When my mum and my little sister and some of the family came up to watch in Harrow against the English Independent Schools, I managed to get a goal for them,” Caldecourt said. “I was pretty chuffed as I don’t score all that often.” “Playing in the snow for the first time ever, it was the first time some of the boys had even seen snow, so it was pretty magical.” After facing Cardiff and Sheffield United’s junior teams, the final match of the tour was also the biggest as the Australians clashed with England Schools. They managed to take the win and cap off the tour on a high note with the 2-1 win over the home-towners. With the A League season wrapping up for 2015, Caldecourt’s next challenge will be when the Victory’s NYL team heads into the Victorian National Premier League 1 competition for the first time. “Just back in to the swing of things with training - back to the grindstone as usual… get a place in the team… training most days to keep the standards high,” Caldecourt said. “I think our first (NPL1) game is against Springvale White Eagles in a couple of weeks, that will be a good thing to be playing consistently every weekend.” He wanted to thank his family for getting him over on the tour and his English family overseas for coming to support him.

Another wash-out By RUSSELL BENNETT WEST GIPPSLAND CRICKET ASSOCIATION REVIEW - ROUND 13 (DAY 1) FRIDAY night’s rain washed out play at both Kooweerup and Beaconsfield before play even began on Saturday, meaning the only other play of the Premier round that day was Upper Beaconsfield’s clash with Pakenham. After losing half an hour due to a damp pitch, Lions openers Russ Lehman (24) and Sam Webster (19) - promoted from Sub-District put on a near half-century opening stand. But from there, Pakenham lost four quick wickets to slide to 4/54. With Maroons seamer Tommy Tyrrell taking 3/17 from his first 11
overs and nipping them both ways, it was up to Lions skipper Jason Williams (40) and Josh Gonzalez (62 not out) to embark on a rescue mission. And the visitors’ middle and lower orders stood tall - something that hasn’t been seen often enough this season - as the side ultimately reached 8/206 from their 80 overs. Gonzalez showed stellar concentration after a cautious start to his innings on a dead pitch and, after two quick wickets to Maroons skipper Chris Savage, youngsters Matt Welsh (14) and Zac Chalpin (30) provided plenty of support. Chaplin, in particular, looked sublime. He was dismissed in the final over of the day, skying a ball to mid-on, but he’d already done his job - piercing gaps with a series of impressive
drives. Tyrrell, one of the best opening bowlers in Premier this season, finished with 4/50 from 23 overs, while Savage took 2/35, and Will Haines (1/4) conceded just four runs in seven overs. Meanwhile in Sub-District, Pakenham has some work to do if it’s to climb from fourth on the ladder over the final two rounds. After winning the toss against the second-placed Lang Lang and electing to bat at Toomuc Reserve, the Lions lost three quick wickets before Greg Interlandi (29) and Jason Fisher (34) set about a rescue mission. Wickets continued to fall in clumps through the middle order, however, and the side needed valuable runs off the bats of Dale McCraw (14), Steve Insall (21)
and Jack Melbourne (17 not out) to reach 147. After bowling the Lions out in 58 overs, the Tigers (2/33) had a difficult 19 overs to face before stumps and, as is often the case in this situation, couldn’t make it through to day two unscathed. With eight wickets still in hand and 115 needed for victory, they’ll walk out to the middle this Saturday confident of victory. But Dale McCraw (1/7), Shannon Mitchell (1/10) and Aaron Beveridge have started well with the ball and early wickets could heap the pressure on the visitors. In other local action, Pakenham Upper/Toomuc (155) is battling in its District clash with Devon Meadows (2/42), and Officer (8/182) is in a strong position against the SFX Old Collegians (2/1).
Strong leaders are like Gold-sack By JARROD POTTER STICKING by the man that stuck by them, Collingwood Football Club has awarded Tyson Goldsack a vice-captaincy ahead of his ninth AFL season.
Tyson Goldsack has been promoted to a vice captaincy at Collingwood ahead of the 2015 AFL Picture: KATH GANNAWAY season. 94580
Goldsack, originally from Pakenham, has been enlisted as one of captain Scott Pendlebury’s right-hand men after he was announced as a vice-captain last week. After swirling speculation about his future as a Magpie last year - with the 27-year-old defender an unrestricted free agent - Goldsack signed on the dotted line in September to confirm he would remain at Collingwood for the next three seasons.
He was named as a covice-captain alongside forward Travis Cloke, speedy midfielder Steele Sidebottom and defender Nathan Brown. “We will run with four vice-captains this year,” Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley said in a video on the Collingwood website. “Travis Cloke, Steele Sidebottom, Tyson Goldsack and Nathan Brown. “Five very strong leaders (including captain Scott Pendlebury) - all premiership players who know what it takes to get there… and entrusted with the responsibility of working with the coaches to drive this young group towards its next period of sustained success.”
It all started for Goldsack in Pakenham as he plied his craft with the Lions and Gippsland Power before his selection in the 2006 AFL National Draft at pick 63. He famously was recalled to the 2010 premiership replay and slotted the first goal of the match at huge 80-1 odds. It is probably his favourite match in a 124-game career so far playing for the black and white stripes. Goldsack will take the field for the first time as a vice captain next week as Collingwood faces Hawthorn in a NAB Challenge match at Aurora Stadium, Launceston on Thursday 26 February.

Falcon’s got the X-factor By DEREK OGDEN DARK clouds may be amassing on the Ford Australia horizon with the approaching demise of manufacturing but there is some sunshine still in the blue oval skies. Heading the Falcon flight is the FG X XR8 sedan, with which Ford has returned a V8 engine - the 5.0-litre supercharged Boss unit - to the Falcon XR
Series line-up. The FG X XR8 six-speed manual selling for $52,490, plus onroads, and six-speed automatic $54,690. The latter was our test vehicle. With the new Falcon FG X series already in showrooms and the arrival of the updated Focus and Focus ST, all-new Mondeo, Mustang coupe and convertible and Everest SUV, by 2016 Ford will have reworked in some way its entire
model Aussie line-up. There will be many things familiar to the Falcon V8 aficionado in the new FG X XR8 and those not so familiar will soon find their way around. Inquire about the Ford range at David Nutter Ford, 749 Princes Highway, Berwick, phone 8768 2222, or Freeway Ford, 200 High Street, Cranbourne, phone 5991 2300.
The Falcon XR8 stands alone from the rest of the XR series.
