Cat woman ‘bashed’ A WOMAN in an emotional battle with Geelong Animal Welfare Society over her missing cat is further traumatised after an unrelated bashing this week. The fight with GAWS had already left Corio’s Lyndal Gill and her family deeply upset and “publicly humiliated“ amid accusations of lying, she told the Independent.
Gang assault derails battle for rare pet
Then on Wednesday morning three men of African appearance bashed Ms Gill after she asked them to move their parked car so a school bus could collect her disabled son, she said. The men drove off after the attack, leaving her battered and

A 27-year-old Portarlington man hit a flat note with police after he was intercepted on the Westgate Bridge playing a trumpet - while driving. Hobson’s Bay Highway Patrol officers received numerous calls last week about a sedan driving erratically towards the city. The man was pulled over and was brassed off when he was fined $345 for careless driving. Just as well he didn’t play the tuba.

TWO WANTED Norlane men are on in the run in Geelong’s northern suburbs, police believe. Shaun Hutchison, 29, has eight outstanding warrants for allegedly possessing a controlled weapon, unlicensed driving and theft. Police described him as 185cm, thin and with a fair complexion, blue-grey eyes and brown hair. Andrew Murray, 34, is also wanted over eight outstanding warrants. Police described him as 170cm, with a solid build, a fair complexion, blue eyes and black crew-cut hair. Police asked anyone with information on either man to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at crimestoppersvic.com.au.
A NORTH Geelong resident received a stronglyworded reminder notice from electricity supplier Momentum Energy last week. He wouldn’t have minded so much except he never received a bill. “If I’m in arrears I’ll pay it right away but it’s hard to pay a bill when you don’t know how much it is,” he explained. He phoned Momentum only to be told its billing department had “held over” his bills for January and February. “How come I got the reminder notice then?” he asked, reasonably enough.
“It’s an automatic system,“ came the reply. The poor call centre lass was also at a loss to explain why the bills had been held over. Not a terribly momentous system. THE Geelong name turns up in the oddest places sometimes, now starring in the Small Pelagic Fishery within the Australian fishing zone south of Tasmania. Seafish Tasmania has won approval for a 95-metre fishing vessel named Geelong Star to replace a super trawler now banned under goverment size restrictions. Geelong Star will chase a quota of 16,566 tonnes of jack mackerel, redbait and blue mackerel for the 2014/15 fishing season. That’s probably more than all the blokes fishing from piers, rocks and boats around Geelong combined. AS the global warming debate continues raging on the Indy’s Letters page, Double Take thought it was time to reveal another frightening world-
wide change - one unnoticed until now yet taking place below our very feet. Global thickening. Yes, unstoppable, undeniable global thickening. In this case the evidence is irrefutable. Consider dinosaur fossils, ancient civilizations, the dog’s old bones - the longer anything lays around, the further underground it ends up. Think about it: without global thickening we’d be awash in extinct giant wombat skulls and Chinese terracotta warriors. Well, that’s the consensus settled. But why is it so? Photosynthesis and meteorites are suspects, while Double Take’s ability to plump up without pigging out is another clue. But what can we do? It’s a question beyond even the unrivalled intellect of Double Take, so over to you. Send suggestions to the IPGT - the (Geelong) Independent Panel on Global Thickening - care of the usual channels.

Battlers going without food ‘to pay for power’ By PAUL MILLAR STRUGGLING Geelong families are going without food so they can scrape together enough money to prevent utility suppliers from disconnecting services, according to support agencies. The agencies said they were struggling to cope with the fallout from the disconnection of gas, water and electricity supplies across the region. Soaring utility costs are biting across the state, with 58,000 gas and electricity users cut off in Victoria in last year. The Energy and Water Ombudsman told the Independent 578 Geelong households faced ‘’imminent
disconnection” between 14 November and 15 January. The companies cut off power to 106 homes over the same time, the ombudsman reported. The Salvation Army said job cuts and rising prices were starting to hit hard, with families who had never previously suffered financial hardship now appealing for help. Local welfare agencies were aware of the hardship before the Essential Services Commission this week revealed that Victoria had recorded its highest rate of disconnections. Jo McMahon, a financial counsellor with The Salvation Army, said Geelong was “struggling”.
“After people pay their basic bills there’s nothing left for food. It’s a horrible situation,” she said. “We’re experiencing a large number of people struggling to meet their power bills and more and more people are facing disconnection. “We have elderly people going without food so they can pay their bills.” “I’m seeing more and more people coming in with bills they cannot manage.’’ Bethany Community Support’s Grant Boyd said the problem appeared ongoing rather than occurring in a sudden surge. Families often had to choose
whether to go without food or power, he said. “That’s a terrible situation for people to be in. We often have families with children who go to school without breakfast. “Geelong’s doing it tough at the moment in some areas. We need a more-understanding approach by the utility providers.” Financial and Consumer Rights Council’s Bernadette Pasco said rising utility prices were hitting hardest some of the most vulnerable people in society. “Older people in particular are experiencing fuel poverty in a fairly affluent country,” she said.
In brief Candidates recycled A FORMER MP who was voted out of office and a councillor who Victoria’s opposition leader once described as a “gutless” mayor are Labor preselection candidates for Corangamite. Darren Cheeseman wants to regain his former federal seat from the Liberals, while Surf Coast’s Cr Libby Coker nominated after failing to win Polwarth at November’s state election.
Land pricey THE Barwon region has the eighth most-expensive residential land in regional Australia, according to new figures. Australia’s Housing Industry Association called on authorities to speed up the release of land, quoting RP Data and HIA Economics research that showed Barwon’s median price was $183,000 in the September quarter.
Patrol push ARMED protective services officers should patrol central Geelong’s bus interchange and mall, according to state Liberal leader Matthew Guy. He said patrolling PSOs would boost the city centre’s economy, “with shops, restaurants and cafes becoming more-attractive for an evening out”.
City dancers A “SILENT disco tour” through Geelong tomorrow will include “interpretive dancing near local landmarks”, City Hall has warned. A spokesperson said the tour’s 50 participants would also engage in “spontaneous flash mob dancing” as part of a Geelong Active Streets program to enliven the city centre.

TORCH WOOD: Fire-fighter Kye Doensen wields an ignition torch at the Ocean Grove Nature Reserve on Wednesday. 134788

MILD weather and low humidity have allowed a summertime burn-off to protect homes at Ocean Grove. Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning’s David Rourke said Ocean Grove Nature Reserve’s vegetation was usually “difficult to burn and needed to be drier”. Wednesday’s weather was “ideal” for reducing the park’s fire fuel in summer, he said. “We only have a small window of opportunity to conduct our burns, so we’re balancing community expectations to get as much burning done as
possible to reduce the risk of bushfires, with our preparedness and response to late-season bushfires.” Mr Rourke said the burn covered 70 to 80 per cent of the 19.7-hectares targeted, “mainly acacia and sheoaks”. “There are no other burns planned in the reserve this autumn. However, future burns will be part of a more-comprehensive plan for this important reserve.” Seventy fire-fighters attended on Wednesday, with crews staying on site until today to ensure safety.
The department said the burn also had the added benefit of encouraging “species diversity” at the reserve, off Grubb Rd on Ocean Grove’s northern doorstep. Mr Rourke said the department made “efforts to reduce the risk to native animals”. “Because fire is applied in a planned way under specific weather conditions it moves more slowly. This gives birds and animals time to move into the treetops or underground, or to move away from the burn area.”

Outgoing chief’s hope for agency By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN
ARRGG, PIRATES: Jamie Bamber in a scene from John Doe: Vigilante, left, and an exclusive poster for the movie, above, one of the most illegally downloaded films of the past week.
Vigilante ‘pirates’ raid local director’s movie By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A GEELONG West director's vigilante thriller has suddenly become one of the most downloaded movie titles on pirate sites across the world. Despite a limited cinema release in Australia and the US, Kelly Dolen's John Doe: Vigilante was pirated up to a million times from the major torrent sites last weekend. Leading site TorrentReactor listed the film at five in its list of mostpirated movies, behind Big Hero 6, Birdman, Horrible Bosses 2 and Wild Card. The response followed the posting
of the US version of the DVD onto Torrent sites last Friday. “It just went gangbusters,” Mr Dolen said. The response was bitter-sweet for the director, with the popularity of his work gratifying but without any financial reward because it was pirated. “The film industry is going through a major shift and this is one of the reasons why,“ Mr Dolen said. “With so many different distribution platforms available now, the industry is very different from what it used to be and the public is asserting its view.
“But over the weekend the film’s IMDB ranking rose to 931 overall and the trailer had around 250,000 hits.“ The independently-financed feature stars Battlestar Galactica’s Jamie Bamber and AACTA winner Lachy Hulme, who starred in Power Games, Offspring and Killer Elite. Critiqued as the best Australian film since Romper Stomper, the film broaches the prickly subject of taking the law into one’s own hands. The polarising movie tells the story of John Doe, a man accused of being a brutal vigilante serial killer – but only of repeat offenders who “deserved to die“.
As his trial verdict approaches, an investigative journalist probes the accused to discover the motive and reasoning behind his actions. Mr Dolen said John Doe: Vigilante was his third feature film but he was already in pre-production for his next, Bound, which he planned to film in Geelong. The exclusive story of the next big thing in Geelong’s fledgling film industry features in the next issue of Geelong Coast magazine (GC), out early next month. GEELONG agency Karingal has opportunities to expand its profile as a national player in the disability sector, according to outgoing chief Daryl Starkey. The long-serving head of the disability services provider announced his retirement this week after 15 years in the top job. “The board would like Karingal to become more of a national player in disability, given that we're already operating in South Australia and Queensland with MatchWorks,” Mr Starkey said. “With the National Disability Insurance Scheme to roll out across Australia, that offers a number of opportunities. “We believe we can better serve our clients by having a better voice.” Mr Starkey said the time was right for someone new to take RETIRING: Outgoing Karingal to another Karingal chief Daryl level. Starkey. 134840 He said he looked forward to a semi-retirement working part-time in consultancy or mentoring roles. “If there’s no work there are plenty of voluntary things I can do.” Mr Starkey said lifestyle and family reasons were part of his decision. “Our children are married and we have a grandchild here in Geelong, so this is an opportunity to spend more time with the family and to get in that game of golf,” he said. “I do have feelings about it because I’'ve had a fabulous time over 15 years but that's a long time for a CEO role like this. “But I'm confident the good reputation of Karingal will continue with a strong board and management team in place.”

‘Bashing’ derails fight for rare cat

EARLIER this month Ms Gill saw Sirus on a GAWS Facebook post offering him for adoption. She then went to GAWS’ Pt Henry Rd facility to claim her cat. Ms Gill said she visually identified Sirus and he responded to her calling him but GAWS staff claimed they had information he had been stolen and refused to release the cat. While in a heated debate with GAWS staff over Sirus’s ownership, Ms Gill said a council ranger accused her of having a dog removed from her property due to animal welfare concerns. Ms Gill said she never owned a dog. “It was clearly mistaken identity but the ranger was so rude and aggressive. We were humiliated in front of the other people in the reception area at GAWS. “We were told to leave without our cat, as there was nothing further to discuss. “I later received a voicemail message from GAWS saying the cat had been sold to another adoption applicant.” Ms Gill wished she had microchipped Sirus so she could have avoided the saga. “But that doesn’t mean we can be treated like this. We’ll continue to follow this up because if

WANTED: Sirus the pure-bred ragdoll at the centre of the dispute. GAWS is deceptively obtaining animals and selling them it has to be stopped.” Councillor Kylie Fisher said the situation was serious and now the subject of a council investigation. “To on-sell a cat in an ownership dispute is really wrong. I’d be distraught if it happened to me because pets are part of the family,” Cr Fisher said. “Lyndal has not been given the opportunity to prove ownership. As a third person, I want to believe Lyndal and I want to believe GAWS is doing the right thing. “I know there’s been human error involved in the past with the identification of cats. If noth-
ing else, this services to illustrate why all cats need to be microchipped so this can’t happen.” Cr Fisher said the investigation aimed to “get to the bottom of what’s happened” because a reunion of Ms Gill and her cat was still possible. GAWS operations manager Lara Hookham said Ms Gill was unable to provide any one of seven ways of identifying her cat. “Without proof of ownership we can’t just give a cat to anyone,“ Ms Hookham said. “This is under investigation and we’re working with council to resolve the dispute.” Ms Hookham said Sirus had been “rehomed” but the new owner was aware his ownership was still in dispute. “There’s nothing out of the ordinary and we’re just following processes. I can understand the emotion attached to this but we just have to work through it.” Ms Hookham said the dispute was a “perfect example” of why responsible cat owners needed to update animal records or risk “heart-breaking circumstances”. GAWS was constantly trying to manage disputes over animal ownership and was working on introducing an intermediary process, she said.

GEELONG’S alliance of councils is pushing State Government for a prime spot on a review of regional development. G21 Geelong Alliance chief Elaine Carbines said the review presented an opportunity for the region to advance its priorities. “This gives us an opportunity to push our priorities a bit harder
and make sure our region benefits from whatever changes are made,” Ms Carbines said. “We look forward to participating in it. It’s good news for us because we’ve already done all the planning work for the future of the region.” The Government last week announced an independent review of Regional Development Victoria’s strategic priorities to better
drive jobs, investment and growth in regional Victoria. Minister for Regional Development and Western Victoria MLC Jaala Pulford said the Government had a clear goal of creating jobs and growing Victoria’s small towns and regional centres. The review would develop a regional strategy focussing on creating jobs, supporting industry and boosting investment.

City feeds app-etite for cultural art tourism
WorkSafe jobs move:
Geelong to get all 550, says Labor
By NOEL MURPHY ARTIST Cam Scale’s image of Willem Baa Nip - known also as King Billy, the last of the Wathaurung tribe’s Watarung Bulluk clan - looms large over Dennys Plce, just off central Geelong’s Little Malop St. It’s one of a growing corpus of works across the city reflecting Geelong’s thriving arts community. City Hall, in a bid to push the region’s arts, has launched new websites and a phone app for artists to promote themselves and for users to learn local secrets. The online resources - Arts Atlas, Geelong Arts & Culture Trails and Connecting Memory - offer places to explore, share and celebrate. Arts Atlas has jumped the starter’s blocks with more than 100 artists registered already, while the Arts & Culture Trails app reveals various public and street art, creative spaces, studios and galleries. The third, Connecting Memory, brings together musicians, writers and filmmakers with a collection of stories exploring the significance of local places to the people who live here. A City Hall spokesperson said cultural tourism was a growing sector for Geelong, so now was the perfect time to launch the app for people looking to experience more than a sightseeing visit. “The app was developed for tourists and locals,” the spokesperson said. “It has 14 trails for people to select. The trails take people on 40-minute, one, two and three-hour walks.” “There’s also one art trail designed to see by car which takes you through the You Yangs, waterfront, Indented Head, St Leonards, Barwon Heads, Bream Creek and Lake Connewarre.” More information is available at artsatlasgeelong.com.au and the app store.

THE FULL relocation of WorkSafe to Geelong is safe, according to Labor MP Christine Couzens. The Member for Geelong said all 550 jobs would be included in the relocation. “I’ve spoken to the premier about it and we’re sticking to our election promise - WorkSafe is coming to Geelong with its full complement,” Ms Couzens said. Doubt about whether Geelong would receive all 550 jobs arose when the Community and Public Sector Union Victoria said only 300 would move to the city. The Independent reported two weeks ago that a review of WorkSafe and the TAC could water down the bipartisan election commitment. Doubts increased last week after the Government failed to guarantee the full relocation, saying only “there will be no job losses”. Liberal Member for South Barwon Andrew Katos accused Labor of trying to “weasel” out of its commitment. The Independent reported that the Committee for Geelong had written to Treasurer Robin Scott to emphasise the importance of the WorkSafe relocation.
Ms Couzens said WorkSafe would remain an independent office and would not be merged with the TAC. “The review is about efficiency and effectiveness. It’s not about job cuts,” she said. “We (the former Labor state government) moved the TAC here and it was a success and we’ll move WorkSafe here with the same success. “I can understand union concerns about jobs because jobs are precious, particularly in Geelong. “There are always going to be those who don’t want to go, but we’re sticking to our election promise and it has been confirmed by the premier. “I’ll be watching it carefully as well.” Federal Liberal Member for Corangamite Sarah Henderson said she was concerned about reports State Government could water down its commitment to fully relocate WorkSafe to Geelong. “I call on the Government to honour that commitment,” Ms Henderson said. “This was a coalition election commitment to bring 550 much-needed jobs to Geelong. Labor matched this promise and must do the right thing by the people of our region by fulfilling it.”

Impurity fears reach seafood By NOEL MURPHY GEELONG supermarkets could be selling contaminated imported seafood, a fisheries and former coastal council leader has warned in the wake of the frozen berries hepatitis scandal. Local seafood suppliers Jenkins and Son and Mantzaris Fisheries agreed with Diane James that imported fish and prawns sold in Geelong could have been exposed to sewage. “Fish sold in supermarket delis needs the same attention the frozen berries are currently receiving,” Ms James said. “Some fish sold in supermarkets is labelled with their accreditation but not much. My question would be how many species sold by supermarkets are from certified sustainable fisheries, such as the internationally recognized
Marine Stewardship accreditation.” Federal MP Bob Katter this week said that most imported seafood used water containing raw sewage, requiring prawns and fish to be “chock-a-block with antibiotics”. Senator Nick Xenophon said the Federal Government did not check for bacterial infections of food and only tested five per cent of imported product. Steven Mantzaris said no level playing field existed between domestic and imported seafood. Australian producers needed to maintain expensive annual registration worth hundreds of thousands of dollars and “jump through hoops” with their products but imported seafood was virtually dumped, unchecked, on Australia markets, he said. “It’s a massive issue and I’ve
been complaining to AQIS for years about not only the risk of infection and diseases coming through but if I wasn’t export registered I could supply and compete with imported product easier. “They’ve put up a health barrier and price competition barrier.” Portarlington's Peter Jenkins was blunt in his criticism. “Put it this way: I wouldn’t be eating that s..t. “There’s no protection for the Australian consumer. Imports aren’t governed by PrimeSafe or any of the regulations we’re governed by. "We have stringent regulations, they’ve got nothing. “What Bob Katter’s saying is correct, although I can’t really comment on how dangerous it is but surely it’s not as good as eating our fresh local seafood.”

Man who shot presidents framed By NOEL MURPHY THE IMAGE OF Gorbachev and Reagan, sitting together in matching blue suits and black shoes but looking apart and conferring with their interpreters, is one for the ages. The United States and USSR leaders, pictured by photographer David Burnett at the 1985 Geneva Summit with the Cold War still holding full sway, is history writ through the lens. So too are another 20 striking shots by the American shutterbug - one of the few to have captured every US president from John F Kennedy to Barack Obama. The images have gone on exhibition at Geelong’s waterfront Alfred Deakin Library. Some feature Jimmy Carter tackling the hustings from a kitchen chair, Gerald Ford with wet dogs after a morning swim, a dampeyed Richard Nixon resigning and JFK shortly before his assassination. Then the focus swings to Obama spooning ice-cream to wife Michelle, Lyndon Johnson’s 1969 state of the union address to Congress, George Bush senior with troops, and his son in the White House gardens. Burnett plumbs the humanity of his subjects, political figures often revered as neardivine by the American public regardless of their leanings. Multiple award-winner Burnett worked in over 70 countries as a freelancer for leading US magazines and was a co-founder of Contact Press Images in 1976. “Being in the company of presidents remains a rarified place, you seldom have second chances,” he said. “You need to be on top of your game. When that look, that gesture, that moment happens, there's nothing like that click of a camera to let you feel like you're entitled to exhale.” The Alfred Deakin Library, in Deakin University's Waterfront campus, secured the travelling exhibition via the Australian Centre for Photography. Burnett’s powerful photos capture five decades of presidential life from electioneering in open rural barns to the tight, stage-managed access of social media, smartphones and the 24-hour news cycle. They were snared on equally changing technology, from his old Speed Graphic film camera to modern digital and retro plastic cameras.

Lib, union boss slam bullying By NOEL MURPHY CITY Hall has bullied and sacked staff in a systematic culture going all the way to the highest levels of Geelong local government, say Liberal MP Andrew Katos and union boss Richard Duffy. The political odd couple agreed workplace bullying at City of Greater Geelong was entrenched and doubted it would change after an in-house investigation. “It’s fundamental to any inquiry or investigation that all involved parties must be at arm’s length from the investigation,
no matter what the organisation,” said Mr Katos, South Barwon's MP and a former Geelong councillor. “If someone’s conflicted - they might work in a department or be a general manager in that department - how on Earth can they conduct the investigation? “I wouldn’t mind seeing some terms of reference, who’s doing what, what powers they have - these need to be brought out into the open.” Mr Duffy, Australian Services Union assistant secretary, “agreed 100 per cent” on the need for an independent, transpar-
ent inquiry. “The council hasn’t even done us the courtesy to let us know there's an inquiry or how it will be conducted or who’ll conduct it. “It’s just another example of the council trying to do things secretly. They know they have problems with bullying and they’re trying to brush it under carpet, saying there’s nothing to see here when we all know there is. “Geelong has already done a number of inquiries into bullying and this is just another secretive inquiry. They’re trying
to cover it up and not deal with the situation. "This will be inquiry number four and if it doesn’t get up there’ll be another, but what’s needed is a fully independent inquiry. That’s the only way to come up with something.” Mr Duffy said bullying was so embedded at Geelong it must “go right to the top”. “We’ve had our members bullied and then sacked after complaining. "That kind of systematic bullying can’t go on without being accepted by
senior management. They have the power to fix it but they won’t.” Mr Katos suggested bullying allegations involving council were primarily against Labor-leaning councillors, so the Labor State Government could not be trusted to prosecute its own. Council staff last week told the Independent they were afraid to speak out about bullying to the in-house inquiry for fear of further recriminations. Workers said they did not believe their complaints would remain confidential, citing earlier incidents of payback.
Building industry figure claims permit delays ‘still holding back work’ CITY Hall might claim it has cut the red tape of building permits but a key building industry figure says millions of investment dollars are on hold because applications remain in limbo. “Are their literally millions of dollars in approved bank loans and financing for building works not enough to get someone down in City Hall excited enough to propose some department adjustments?” said Pat Sgro, of Geelong West industry supplier Tile Junket. “With real couples trying to live real lives, living arrangements that were originally temporary have been over-stayed, builders have had to delay start dates over and over again. “Plumbers, electricians, concreters, plasterers, tilers and carpet layers are wondering why they can’t seem to get constant steady work. “Product selections are no longer available and the people who're longing for the build of the home, the people who are actually paying money, are so completely over it and at their wits end - but why? “How is it possible that a few officers here in Geelong have the ability to have
RED TAPED: Pat Sgro has raised local building industry concerns about council delays in processing building permits despite the Picture: REG RYAN introduction of a Vicsmart system to speed up approvals for many applications. 134717 so many hopeful home builders/renovators stuck just simply waiting? “Waiting on the banks? No. "Waiting on the real estate market? No.
"Waiting on planning departments? Yes.” Mr Sgro said the delays were having a “domino effect on local small business” due to a “comparative handful of people
in a few offices”. “The bottleneck in Geelong city council’s planning permits and building permits departments are a literal throttle on the local community’s entire domestic
building industry. “For totally unknown reasons, it seems that once all the red tape has been skilfully manoeuvred and previously unseen hurdles have been bound over the permit is complete - and travels - and lands softly in the in-tray of...who exactly? “It lands with an unknown entity called permits and in this invisible world of magic, spells, dark lords and wizardry somehow within three weeks to 15 months it pops out the other end with the stamp of approval.” City Hall had not responded to the Independent's call for comment before the paper went to press but has previously credited its new VicSmart system with speeding up the permit process, purportedly streamlining it for straightforward planning applications. Classes of applications are identified in the planning scheme as being VicSmart and have specified requirements for information, assessment processes and decision guidelines. Key features include a 10-day permit process, no requirement to advertise applications and predetermined information for applicants to submit.

Fund (GAAF), would also have a 139-space underground car park. A memorandum of understanding between GAAF and the Victorian College of the Arts would bring various performers and workshops to Geelong, he said. “We hope to feature international acts as well but we want to retain access for community arts groups through assistance from the GAAF. Mr Triplolino said both the historic section of the Palais and its new addition could be used independently or combined for large events. He said the original projection screen had been uncovered but further work was needed to enable use of the former projection room. Some works were being held up until power lines immediately outside the venue could be replaced underground, he said.

STAGE one of the refurbishment of Geelong’s iconic Palais is well underway, with plans developed for a 1200-seat function space next door. Tradesmen were putting the finishing touches to the first stage this week, to be unveiled in a grand opening on 28 February. General manager Michael Tripolino said his family’s vision of a new space for Geelong’s art and entertainment community was coming to fruition. “The Tripolino family bought the Palais in 1997 and maintaining an old building is costly and time consuming but a lot of work has been done over the years," he said. “We bought the two adjoining blocks and now have developed plans for the new building next to the Palais, housing music, dance, theatre, cinema, cafĂŠ and function centre.â€?

Balloons let loose ‘killing wildlife’
1173170-CB7-15
BALLOONS are increasingly killing local wildlife, a foreshore authority has warned. Barwon Coast Committee of Management highlighted its concern this week with the release of a picture showing a balloon string almost strangling a seal. The balloon also left a deep gash in the seal’s neck. Another photo from the committee showed balloons and attached ribbons littering the branches of a native tree. Barwon Coast’s Maddie Glynn said environmental damage from balloons from events such as birthdays, commemora-
DEADLY: The seal with the balloon string around its neck. Picture: Troy Muir tions or fundraising events were becoming “an increasing concern”. “Balloons block the digestive tracts of many wildlife species,
slowly starving the animals to death,” she said. “Both the latex balloon and the ribbon it is attached to often entangle wildlife, leading to severe injury or death.” Ms Glynn said balloons also littered the environment and wasted helium, a finite resource essential to life-saving medical procedures. Too many people were ignorant of the dangers of releasing balloons, she said. “There are alternatives,” she said, such as blowing bubbles, flying kites or using coloured solar lights at night events.

ON THE WATERFRONT: Fresh from shooting Lethal Weapon’s Danny Glover, Rob Baard prepares to film his latest movie in Geelong with Mayor Picture: Reg RYAN Darryn Lyons in a guest appearance. 134725 “The opportunity came up to put him in it and there was interest. We said, ‘All right let’s do it’. “It was a Wednesday and they said, ‘We’ve got him for Friday’, so I had to drop everything. “I got on the plane, had no idea where I was going, no accommodation, but then I’m watching the screen and there’s Danny Glover. “It’s surreal when Danny Glover’s there going, ‘Hey Rob, hey Rob, I’ve got a question’. “In your mind you’re going, ‘Danny Glover’s just asked me how to say his lines – I’m telling Danny Glover how to say these lines!’.
“When I was a kid I was watching Lethal Weapon, so for me it was surreal. In the back of my mind that was still playing out but you’re too busy, we had him for a short time and had a lot to shoot.” Baard has created, produced, directed and starred in films, TV series and stunt shows. He’s produced and taught screen writing, visual effects and action courses. He tempers his martial arts with healing-arts skills, telling the Independent his Ninja movies were as much about entertainment as helping empower people to improve their lives.

FEW filmmakers get the chance to boss around actors like Lethal Weapon’s Danny Glover but when the director's a martial arts expert with hypnotic skills it’s surprising what Hollywood can deliver. Geelong’s Rob Baard, producer, director and lead actor in The Ninja: Immovable Heart, due for release next month, managed to do just that. It’s all testament, of course, to his connections, hard work and drive but it was still a special moment when Mr Baard had the star at his disposal. “The Danny Glover thing was huge for us,” he told the Independent this week. “I went to LA and shot with him. We put him in the film and now we’ve got him in the short film we’re shooting this weekend on the Geelong waterfront as well.” Mr Baard’s Ninja Universe superhero movies, short films, related graphic novels and more are the fruition of many years' work on a Marvel Avengers-type franchise. This weekend he will film an action scene in the water off Royal Geelong Yacht Club for short flick Interlude to the Ninja, with irrepressible Mayor Darryn Lyons lending some colour to the proceedings. “The Danny Glover footage and everything’s already done. I went to LA, to Hollywood, and shot him.

Labour of love restores rare relic from bomber
Radio daze for Calvin By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN ONE OF two remaining radio receiver-transmitters used in Lancaster bombers during WWII has been painstakingly restored in a Hamlyn Heights garage. The radio console will be front and centre at an exhibition in July marking the ANZAC centenary. “Semi-retired” electronics technician and former Leetronics business owner Calvin Lee restored the radio console with assistance from members of Geelong Amateur Radio Club. “I’ve been collecting old radios and radio parts for about 30 years but I’m not sure why I decided to restore this one,” Mr Lee laughed. “I’ve been asking myself the same thing.” Describing the Lancaster radio console as “a nice piece of gear”, Mr Lee also had to find a number of peripherals to go with the main transmitter and receiver units. He bought the receiver on eBay, while the rusted out transmitter was found under club member Peter Ward’s Barwon Heads home where it had been since the 1950s. Mr Lee also found a fishpond radar unit, which radio operators also used in the Lancaster bomber. “The fishpond radar ran off the plane’s main radar and was used to check the underside of the Lancaster, its weak point for attack by fighter aircraft,” Mr Lee explained. “The radio operator actually sat on the main spar of the wing and wore a helmet with a throat microphone connected to the console.” Mr Lee also managed to find a BBC radio recording of a live bombing run over Berlin in 1943, which he could now play with an attached bathtub Morse key.
BE THE PAINSTAKING: Mr Lee has put many hours into restoring the radio and its controls in time for the Anzac centenary.

“We believe there is only one other Lancaster radio console in Australia, called G for George, at the war memorial in Canberra,” Mr Lee said. He has 31 other restoration projects on the go for the ANZAC centenary military communications exhibition
at Osborne House in July, including walkie talkies, WWI radios and field telephones. Mr Lee said the restored items would be made available to museums for inclusion in permanent displays after the exhibition.

Kate’s foodie fun an online hit By NOEL MURPHY A SMUG foodie and her diarrhoea-prone sidekick have sent Geelong comedian Kate McLennan into internet overdrive. McLennan and Kate McCartney’s online comedy, The Katering Show, garnered more than a million hits last weekend after the debut of its six irreverent episodes. The response earned the couple prime time coverage on TV’s The Project this week as they pondered their show's possibilities. The surprise smash hit is politically incorrect, a touch slapstick, contemporarily profane and driven by healthy doses of deliberate stupidity, replete with classic comic elements.
The galloping gourmands frenemies for the main part - tackle issues such as ethical eating, food porn, quitting sugar, Christmas and Mexican meals. They road-test pressure cookers and the celebrated Thermomix, generally with disastrous results. McCartney and McLennan also manage to slam foodies, ridicule vegans, spit food about and smother their heads with chopped onions and all sorts of gooey sauces. In episodes such ‘We Quit Sugar’, the girls opine that sugar’s been “really bad for you since the internet’’ before delivering a show they describe as “booze, sugar, gluten, fructose, lactose and personality-free”. 'Ethical eating' featured them
binning wallaby and possum steaks because the animals were too cute to be eaten but hoeing into a non-cute kangaroo-based ragu - or "roo-gu", as McLennan suggested. They mercilessly tackle social media foodie junkies for uploading duck eggs and waiting for likes, slam risotto as a rubbish dish, provocatively turkey fist in their Chrissie preps and, while tackling Mexican food, explore the “cultural phenomenon/plague of food trucks and eating in gutters”. McLennan told the Independent the pair planned to tackle “other lifestyle stuff" with a "spoof lifestyle website" on subjects such as cooking and beauty, interior design and pets.

Letters Make room for cyclists WHAT I really hate are cyclists who share our roads not being given a fair go. Let’s face it, it’s cars that contribute to polluting our environment. I’d like to see more cyclists on the roads and, possibly at a pinch, wider, safer bike lanes for them. This could result in fewer complaints, such as those by Angry Motorist (Buckets & Bouquets, 6 February). After all, the roads were designed to share. Ellen Csar Newtown
A proven waste of space THE INDEPENDENT is spending far too much space allowing debates on anthropogenic climate change. Topics such as whether cigarettes cause cancer, evolution of the species, and geocentric and heliocentric cosmology are being badly neglected. I expect more diligence on the Independent’s part in attending to these important topics in future. Heather D’Cruz Geelong West
Sea high before C02 RAY BLACK wrote that Geelong’s seawater level was seven metres above present levels in the last interglacial warm period (Letters, 13 February). It must have been pretty hot, with ice sheets melting and glaciers disappearing. All this happened before man had started putting carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere. But did Earth self-destruct in a fiery catastrophic barbecue that destroyed all life? Apparently not, it just recovered as it always has. Climate change is normal but we are told the .4C warming from 1970 to 1998 will lead to a catastrophic end to life on Earth. No wonder people are sceptical. NASA’s satellite system shows zero temperature increase since 2000. Catastrophic warmists want to stop atmospheric temperatures rising over 2C by the end of the century, but why are they so sure the temperatures will start rising again and when will it begin? I only used the term ‘catastrophic warmists’ as a comeback on those who try to suppress free debate and label climate sceptics ‘deniers’. Peter Rees Bell Park
Parents raising smarter kids with iPad help IN REPLY to Mary Bicanic (Letters, 13 February), as a parent of a three-year-old who uses an iPad I qualify to comment on what it actually does offer a curious little mind. While some will criticise our parenting techniques, we are trying to equip our children with the skills to make their way through a world run by computer technology. Before assuming what our little sponges play on iPads, a little research could be made into the limitless educational apps available and the creative, academic and imaginative skills they offer children. Our son’s ability to count, recognise numbers and solve problems improved within a week of purchasing some of these apps. As for some of the other apps, he simply has fun making his own music, feeding Humpty Dumpty breakfast or using his imagination to build submarines or cities. When I see him smile after making one of his iPad creations, I see he has a feeling of accomplishment and pride, just like when he explores outdoors. In regard to the statement, “Since when did this genera-
LEARNING: Modern technology can make smarter children, according to readers. tion of parents become so lazy as to resort to a machine to babysit their children?”, Ms Bicanic should not assume we have any other kind of babysitter. So forgive us if once a month we would like to go out for a meal and at least one unbroken adult conversation while our children take time out from us, too. Christie Whitney Geelong West MY TWO-YEAR old occasionally uses his iPad, a gift from his beloved grandmother’s estate. It was not intentionally bought as a babysitting tool, nor was it forced upon him, yet, in a world where almost all adults and children over 10 have mobile phones or devices of some sort, it’s little wonder
It’s the spike, stupid THE DISCUSSION around human-induced climate change would be far more edifying if Dr Ray Black and others referred to their opponents as deniers, not sceptics. Ancient philosopher Socrates said: “The only thing we know for sure is that we know nothing for sure”. Science is based on measurement and probability. There is no absolute system of measurement, so there’s no way of knowing for sure whether any phenomenon will occur even in a controlled environment.
his curiosity entices him to look at his iPad and also my iPhone. My son is well-rounded, plays with tea sets, balls and cars, rides his bike, reads books, watches movies, has swimming lessons, participates in gymbaroo and play dates each week, and loves to walk up slides at the park. On his iPad he also plays car puzzles and plays racing, spelling and counting games, promoting motor development, academic skills, concentration, creativity and imagination, which Mary Bicanic claimed were lacking in today’s children and tied to patience and discipline. I am not a lazy parent but will need to pay for an iPad on his prep-grade school list. I am happy my son has embraced his iPad and is getting ahead in his learning. Perhaps Ms Bicanic should listen to the future generation and understand it will be a tough world for its members if they cannot or do not embrace technology. Wendy Valentine Breakwater
The other problem is the use of the term ‘climate change’. Deniers say the climate is always changing and, of course, they’re right – Earth’s climate is always changing, it’s a natural phenomenon. What’s not natural is the recently discovered step-change in atmospheric CO2 concentrations. Antarctic ice cores show CO2 levels between 280 parts per million and 350ppm dating back 800,000 years. Somehow it has now jumped to 400ppm. It may be chance that this event coincides with the start of the fossil fuel age but climate scientists agree the probability of human actions not causing the CO2 spike is very low. If there is doubt increased CO2 might disrupt our

climate, shouldn’t we be more prudent, more conservative, about how we proceed with the human project? In his recent biography, Greens leader Bob Brown said: “Stupid people are cocksure of everything. Intelligent people are full of doubt”. Phil Baulch Belmont
Alarm before the revolt WHAT great cause could unite Prince Charles, President Obama, the Pope, Arab oil sheiks, the United Nations, the European Union, the Russians, the Chinese, Pacific island nations, most undeveloped countries, the glitterati of Hollywood, left-wing politicians, unrepentant reds, government media, the climate-research industry, big oil, big gas and the green blob? It must be something posing a clear and urgent danger to all humanity. No, it’s the war on carbon fuels, focussed mainly on coal. This world coalition of alarm comprises all those wanting more – more world government, more energy taxes, more climate research funds, more green donations, more regulations, more votes, greater market share, more human-free land, more foreign aid and more disasters; a massive constituency benefitting from maintaining the climate crisis. Opposing this coalition of climate alarmists and opportunists is a rag-tag army of stressed taxpayers and electricity consumers and a scattering of sceptical scientists and media researchers. But the imposing empire of alarms has a hollow heart - the globe has refused to warm, the alarmists’ so-called science is crumbling, their climate models are discredited, some have been caught manipulating records and results, and the huge cost of green electricity is hurting. The public is growing uneasy, governments can no longer afford the climate industry cuckoo in the public nest, and the army of sceptics grows. The climate revolt is spreading. Viv Forbes, Rosewood, Queensland
Zero chance I’m wrong I MUST protest Alan Barron’s letter in the 13 February Independent. He said that my claims “need to be challenged”. Fair enough, but the only claim I made was that two thermometers reading 0C gave the same reading. Mr Barron can challenge my claim and show me where it is wrong. Kevin Crough Lara

Blundell brings country back By NOEL MURPHY HE’S ONE of Oz country’s biggest stars and just a little mysterious. A household name with a string of awards and platinum albums, a bloke who singlehandedly turned a generation onto country music, paved the way for fellow Aussies in Nashville and then chucked it all in to go busking around Europe in a Kombi. James Blundell’s been a headliner since he broke onto the country scene with Song for Louise more than 25 years ago. He’s earned about 20 major awards and changed the nature of Australian country into a punchier, harder rock genre with contemporary lyrics and links to the average worker.
Blundell might be synonymous with Aussie country but he’s also been likened more often to musicians such as Amerian’s Steve Earle and Kris Kristofferson than any other Antipodean singer-songwriter. His latest recording, Woolshed Creek, suggests the 40-something, twice divorced father of three has more in common with that kind of country-outlaw than Australian country artists who have followed his lead. His latest single, Hills of Brisbane, reflects the observational lyricism that colour his style. Indeed, Blundell’s insight, wit and empathy characterise his work. But he’s a different man these days, reemerging from a self-imposed six-year hiatus
after working away from the music game. He famously fought with EMI, refusing to be boxed in its preferred mould. These days he works the family property at Mount Malakoff, in southern Queensland, farming sheep and cattle. Working long hours, often alone, allows Blundell time to formulate ideas in a way touring never really could. He focuses on narrative, relations and observation – “one of the very few things in songwriting you’re allowed to do as you get older and not become disenfranchised”, he told the Independent. “Social and political opinions are much sharper in kitchens and shearers’ quarters
than the middle of town, where you spend half your time trying not to get run over. “A day’s productive fencing, or drenching sheep, can be very creative, especially with no interruptions or phone calls. It’s a kind of rebirth of creativity.” Blundell’s was exposed to guitar by his musician grandfather and songs via an “excruciating’ stereogram and two records, Sandy Shaw’s Puppet on a String and Herb Alpert’s Spanish Flea, alongside a few Marty Robbins and Slim Dusty songs”. Blundell will appear alongside a raft of leading Australian country artists at Geelong’s Motor City Music Festival on the March Labour Day long weekend.

of this beloved choir.” Ms John said the choir was actively recruiting new voices and welcomed men of all ages to help continue the tradition. The choir recorded its first album in 1969 but had added to its library of recordings since. The choir celebrated its 50th anniversary in November 1993 with a free concert at Geelong City Hall and celebrated 1000 performances in 1998. John said auditions were not required. Rehearsals were 7pm Mondays at Noble Street Uniting Church. She said more information was available by phoning Alf Jones on 5248 3837, Terry Ayrton on 5243 3467 or herself on 5243 0366.

THE OLDEST male choir in Victoria, Geelong’s International Harvester Male Chorus, has appointed the first female conductor in its 72 year history. Well-known Geelong conductor and musical director Jeanette John has taken the helm of the choir as it aims to restore its former glory. A group of men from the tool room at the former International Harvester Company founded the choir in 1943. “This choir has a rich local history having been supported by well-respected local conductors and accompanists,” John said. “When their conductor suffered ill health the choir was in
danger of folding because the members didn’t think they could get another conductor. “But I couldn’t bear the thought of it closing. It would be a real shame for Geelong to let it fold. “It represents a big break in tradition but the members were willing to embrace that for the chance to take it forward.” John said she would work with well-known pianist John Bumford to rebuild the choir to once again showcase its music. She brings to the role more than 16 years of conducting experience and three major international choral tours. “We want to introduce some new energy and a focussed sense of purpose ensuring the survival

Best yum cha in 30 options THE BEST yum cha has hit Geelong, halting the need for locals to drive all the way to Melbourne to experience great Cantonese cuisine. For those new to yum cha, it comprises small, traditional dishes, all with different ingredients and tastes. At Wai Bo Restaurant customers have the pleasure of choosing from 30 different yum cha options with prices ranging from $5.50 to $7.50 per dish. Committed to providing a fresh and wholesome experience for lunch or dinner, Wai Bo’s specialty chefs cook all dishes, including dim sims, fresh on-site daily.
Six years ago head chef Wai Yip Chan moved from Hong Kong when he was hired by the owner of one of Geelong’s leading Chinese restaurants, where he worked for two years. He then moved on to work in Melbourne before seeing an opportunity for authentic Cantonese cuisine and yum cha to become available in Geelong. With his extensive experience, Wai and wife Sandy have now brought both to Geelong with their new restaurant. With the addition of a special oven, customers can indulge in some of Wai Bo’s exclusive dishes such as Peking duck and bar-

ready to shine of ethnic diversity and harmony as well as gaining an appreciation of the great variety of artistic and cultural expression within Geelong’s multicultural community. The Pako Festa Street Parade begins 11am with a splash of colour, culture and celebration as one of the most important events on the day’s schedule. Pako Festa encapsulates the essence of multicultural Australia:
diversity, dynamism, colour, cooperation, community inter-connectedness, creativity and the promotion of humanity. The event sends a strong message in troubled times about the community’s preparedness to interact and work with and treat each other with dignity and respect. The aim is to demolish the walls of division and conflicts, bringing everyone together in a spirit of
understanding, acceptance and celebration of life itself. An important aspect of Pako Festa lies in its provision for multicultural communities to continue affirming and honour their contributions to Pako Festa over its 33year history. Pako Festa is on Saturday 28 February. More information, including a program and access advice, is available at pakofesta.com.au.

MOTORCYCLE Service Centre is a family-ownedand-operated business at Moolap less than five minutes from central Geelong. Rob Jenner, a fully-qualified mechanic for 30 years, has extensive knowledge and practical experience across all makes and models from Japan, Europe, Britain and the USA. “I’ve owned and ridden everything from Hondas to Harleys and we’ve raced Ducatis, Yamahas, Aprilias – I’ve even turned an MV Agusta upside-down a few times!” The business’s core focus is log-book servicing and preventative maintenance. “Looking after your bike via regular and diligent servicing is critical,” Rob explains. “Way too many times we see expensive problems caused by a lack of maintenance and quite often we see people replacing expensive parts themselves trying to fault-find a problem that can be a simple adjustment, which we’d catch and repair during a service. “We keep a wide range of service parts and lubes in stock for the home-mechanic, too.” Motorcycle Service Centre is well-known for its personalised service and customer satisfaction. “I like to discuss directly with the customer exactly what they want, especially on bigger jobs like serious repairs or high-performance modifications,” Rob said. “There’s no confusion with a one-on-one discussion.” With many years as a VicRoads Licensed Vehicle Tester, Rob is among the region’s most experienced and respected roadworthy inspectors. “I like to think I’m reasonably fair as far as roadworthy inspections go but not a pushover,” he grins. For all motorcycle needs including roadworthies, log-book servicing and general service and repair for all makes and models, Motorcycle Service Centre provides professional and personalised service. Conveniently located and with private, secure parking at 336 Portarlington Rd, Moolap, Motorcycle Service Centre’s business hours are 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday and Saturday by prior appointment by phoning 0488 247 077.

LOW-IMPACT collisions typical in shopping centre car parks are annoying to say the least. Add to this the fact that people rarely own up to damaging other people’s cars. It has been noticed that drivers are often scared to back-up any further due to very limited vision. These are the occasions where reverse sensors are very welcome. Bumper Master fits reversing sensors to help customers overcome fears of backing into objects or even pedestrians. Reversing sensors help prevent damage to owners’ cars as well as the vehicles of neighbours and other motorists. They can also help when backing out of tight garages and past narrow gateposts. Bumper Master can also help owners improve the appearance of bumpers when selling vehicles. Bumpers are the first part of any car to incur damage – and first impressions are important when trying to sell. All Bumper Master repairs come with a no-questions-asked warranty to give customers peace of mind. Best of all, most bumper repairs are done for less than the cost of insurance excesses. Located behind VicRoads at 3 Dowsett St, South Geelong, Bumper Master has proven experience in providing an alternative repair service to the bumper regions of any car. Owners wanting to improve the resale value of their cars should phone Bumper Master on 5221 0138.

Falcon’s got the X-factor
By DEREK OGDEN
DARK clouds may be amassing on the Ford Australia horizon with the approaching demise of manufacturing but there is some sunshine still in the blue oval skies. Heading the Falcon flight is the FG X XR8 sedan, with which Ford has returned a V8 engine the 5.0-litre supercharged Boss unit - to the Falcon XR Series line-up. The FG X XR8 six-speed manual selling for $52,490, plus on-roads, and six-speed automatic $54,690. The latter was our test vehicle. With the new Falcon FG X series already in showrooms and the arrival of the updated Focus and Focus ST, all-new Mondeo, Mustang coupe and convertible and Everest SUV, by 2016 Ford will have reworked in some way its entire model Aussie line-up. Also making a push into new territory is the company’s myFord Capped Price Servicing program, which has now been extended up to seven years and 135,000 km, whichever comes first, up from six years and 105,000 km. The service also is extended to include brake pad replacements. The Capped Price Brake program provides a maximum rate for brake pad replacement. Front and centre is Ford’s global design DNA with a signature trapezoidal grille, chiselled headlight treatment and smoother, wraparound tail-lamps with LED technology. A daytime running light set-up is unique to the XR8. On the outside the Falcon XR8 has strong visual differences over other XR Series models, with a bonnet power bulge, quadtipped exhaust system, power side exterior repeater mirrors and unique shadow-line five-spoke 19-inch x 8.0 (front) / 9.0 (rear) alloy wheels. Inside, generous seats offer outstanding support, cushioning excessive lateral body movement when taking to twisty bits in spirited driving. Seat inserts are natural perforated leather with the seat bolster in Nudo print leather. Instruments and controls are clearly defined, the latter readily falling to hand, while front and rear parking sensors help drivers with greater accuracy by providing a proximity warning tone of hidden obstacles. The new Falcon is replete with smart technology led by Ford’s SYNC2 connectivity system with Emergency Assistance standard across the range. Microsoft-based SYNC2 enables occupants to use voice commands to control phone, music, radio, air-con, and navigation with single-shot GPS for destination entry, where fitted. A high-resolution 8.0-inch colour touch screen with four colour-coded quadrants enables easy access to features. As well, customers gain a digital radio (where there is coverage) and twin antennas for improved audio quality. The Boss 5.0-litre, supercharged 32-valve V8 puts out maximum power of 335 kW at 5750 rpm and maximum torque of 570 Nm all the way from 2200 to 5500 revs. That’s bulk grunt

07 ALFA 147 HATCHBACK XR8 was committed to road and trackwork. The animalistic sedan was raced around a slalom setup, its characteristic 335 kW V8 growl ringing out at any powerpacked manoeuvre. At no time was there any hesitation in the vehicle’s response to driving input. In another part of town, fuel consumption was shown to be within large V8 parameters, with the XR8 showing the creditable figure of 11.6 litres per 100 kilometres on the motorway. But hovering around the 20-litre mark in stop-start city traffic. Ah well, think of the fun factor. Parking especially in skinny shopping centre spaces was relatively stress free due to a reversing camera with guidelines. Getting in and out was not so easy at times, the wide opening doors a threat to close neighbours. There will be many things familiar to the Falcon V8 aficionado in the new FG X XR8 and those not so familiar will soon find their way around the new surroundings. It’s a bit like coming home really. under your right foot virtually all the time. To match the performance of the sporty sedan, the FG X XR8 features front Brembo four-piston calliper brakes and rear singlepiston calliper brakes, high-spec cooling fan, limited-slip differential, heavy duty battery and sports steering gear. Ford has fitted the FPV GT RSpec suspension to the new Falcon XR8. A passenger safety cell, incorporating ultra-high strength steel for all-round protection, is augmented by six airbags, including curtain airbags. Dynamic stability control limits over-steer and under-steer by working with traction control and ABS braking to help keep the vehicle under control. A fatigue warning system lets the driver know when it’s probably time to pull over and rest after prolonged periods of continuous driving. It all adds up to the entire Falcon FG X range earning the top five-star ANCAP safety rating. Front and rear parking sensors are standard. Emergency Assistance comes into play in the event of the vehicle being involved in an accident in which airbags deploy or the emergency fuel pump shutoff is activated. SYNC2 uses its handsfree phone capabilities to attempt to connect the driver directly with a 000 operator through the paired phone. Compared to the last FG Falcon XR8, Ford claims the FG X XR8 has better turn-in, more rear grip, less body roll and an increased sense of control from behind the wheel. This was put to the test at the vehicle’s launch when the FG X

While some teams outside the top six would argue this reduces their chances of claiming an outright win, realistically, with 11 rounds already played, every club has had plenty of chances to consolidate its position. In division one, from a ladder point of view, it’s do or die for seventh placed Grovedale and eighth placed Geelong West. The Tigers host top-placed East Belmont and will need to be at their absolute best if they hope to defeat their local rivals. East’s strength this year has been its depth, with all players stepping up at different times. If Grovedale hopes to win it will need each of its 11 players
to be in top form. The task is no easier for Geelong West because it plays second placed North Geelong. These two met in round one, with the Magpies winning easily, and it’s hard to see that result reversing this time around. In division two, seventh placed St Peter’s will attempt to win its way into the top six against Newcomb & District but perhaps the most important game will be between Modewarre and Marshall. Both teams have shown solid form throughout the season but if they really want to give themselves the best chance of winning the flag they will want to finish as high up the ladder as possible, meaning both will need to be at their best here. And in division three, Winchelsea is in sixth place on 36 points, while Bell Park is close behind on 31 points. Winch will at least have its destiny in its hands when it travels to Bannockburn, while Bell Park will host Inverleigh and simply must win to keep its premiership aspirations alive.

Jan Juc surfers master their rivals at Gunnamatta JAN Juc surfers have dominated Victoria’s masters championships. They won four of six categories in the HIF Victorian Masters Titles at Gunnamatta on the weekend. Nigel Muscroft was first in the over-35 men, Dave Matthews won the over-45s, Greg Brown topped the over-50s and Steve Kay took out the over-55s.
Other surfers from the Geelong region also won numerous placings despite the home-break advantage of Mornington Peninsula rivals. Muscroft won the blue-ribbon event ahead of Jan Juc’s Tim Birnie, Points Lonsdale’s Michael Pinney and Anglesea’s Shane Shepard in second, third and fourth respectively. Pinney also finished second in the over-40 men, while Lara’s Martin Rennhackkamp and Jan Juc’s Grayme Galbraith were runners up in the over-50s
and over-55s respectively. In other surfing competition on the weekend, Jan Juc’s India Robinson won round two of the women’s division in a TOLL Victorian Open Series, also at Gunnamatta. Cape Paterson’s Steve Noble won the men’s round over Jan Juc’s Todd Rosewall. The win allowed Noble to overtake Jan Juc’s Jack Perry for the series lead.
KINGFISH rewarded anglers offshore from Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads over the past week. Fishing World Geelong’s Reece Pitt headed with Dylan Pace at first light Sunday morning, catching a 3.5kg salmon after covering some water. The pair then moved out into 30m off Banncoora where the sounder lit up with good showings of kingfish. They dropped knife jigs down for an intense session that produced numerous kings to 70cm. Daniel Baden and I caught great numbers of salmon to 2.5kg by casting 25g lures into schools of surface feeding fish. We also witnessed a small school of southern bluefin tuna feeding on the surface but were unable to tempt them. I went out again Sunday morning to find kingfish of 70cm on the same water as Reece and Dylan. The kings responded well to five-inch soft plastics allowed to sink slowly. The Rip continued producing the larger kingies, with fish to 12kg taken on knife jigs and live baits. St Leonards fished well for squid and whiting over the weed beds in 4m to 6m. Anglers wading the shallows with soft plastics caught flathead to 50cm. Shane McMurrich put in a few hours behind Mud Island where he boated a 15kg gummy shark on trevally fillets. Clifton Springs had snapper to 2kg in reasonable numbers for anglers fishing the spoil ground and the Wilson Spit area. Both bait and lure worked when schools were located with sounders. Corio Bay was a solid option to escape the wind. Bradley Cox fished Cunningham Pier with soft plastics, catching flathead to 40cm. POINTED AT PERCY: Jim Anglers landed lots of Robinson with tuna from salmon on rock platforms Lady Julia Percy Island. along the Surf Coast. Brian Long caught and released over 20 to just over 2kg and also landed a 50cm kingfish. Portland began producing bluefin tuna to 35kg on trolled skirted lures and Rapala X-Rap 30s. Heading east towards Lady Julia Percy Island was the most productive. Inside the harbour, anglers with smaller boats caught kingfish to 60cm. Jim Robinson and Wayne Trewin ventured down to Lady Julia Percy Island to troll skirted lures in 30m. They boated a pair of tuna to 33kg. Freshwater was a little quiet. Redfin to 35cm were grassed with hard-body lures cast along the Queen’s Park section of the Barwon River. Fishing into the evening was best. Ballarat’s Lake Wendouree hosted angler’s banking brown trout to 1.5kg on hard-body lures cast up against the weed banks. The odd redfin was taken as a by-catch. Eric Box and Allan Marshell had a fantastic trip to Lake Toolondo, boating two brown trout of 2kg each as well as a couple of rainbow trout the same size and a chunky 1kg redfin. They found the fishing a little tough, with strong winds making it difficult to present baits. Fine weather in the next week might make Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads worth fishing offshore for kingfish is well worth the time. If the Kingfish don’t show, the start of the run-out tide has been a safe bet for schools of salmon to bust up feeding on the surface. Snapper out deep off St Leonards could be another option, with gummy shark a potential catch in the same area. Freshwater enthusiasts could try Lake Bullen Merri for Chinook salmon with lures on downriggers or lightly weighted baits left to drift down to the bottom.

GEELONG Cricket Club enjoyed a morale-boosting victory last weekend over Northcote. Although the six points will be more than welcome, it was the way the entire team chipped in and did their bit that will give the side the most satisfaction. Set 309 to win, the Cats started slowly with the top four all getting starts but at 4/80 it felt like a case of deja vu. But Josh McDonald (60) and Carl Sandri (64) steadied the ship with a 107-run partnership before a patient innings of 43 not-out from Jack Sheppard ensured the Cats got the points. Tomorrow Geelong travels to Essendon for day one of the Cats’ final game this season and although some around the club might be looking forward to the end of a difficult campaign, the aim will still be to go out with a bang. Geelong Cricket Association will play a round of one-day games tomorrow after week one of what is the second last round of the season was called off last Saturday due to inclement weather.
