Warriors wounded By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM

Anglicare volunteer Mick Crough believes the ‘Peaceful Warriors’ program is crucial in supporting boys impacted by family violence. Picture: ROB CAREW “The boys get a sense of what to aspire to, and in turn, their families begin to reflect upon their own behaviour, and the community is a winner by having good men,” he said. It’s a view shared by Mick, who notes there is always a clear transformation in the way the boys handle themselves and situations. “The biggest change is that they’ve got so much more confidence. They make positive changes in their lives,” Mick said.

He believes supporting the program is in the best interests of the government too. “It’s preventing boys from getting tied up in dangerous behaviour. It’s much cheaper to fund this program then treat the issues that may develop further down the track.” When asked about the issue during a visit to the Yarra Valley, Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop said the government took the issue of family violence very seriously.

“What we are seeking to do is ensure that services are available and we do put our services out for tender, on a competitive basis, from time to time,” Ms Bishop said. “We want to make sure that services are delivered as cost-effectively but as appropriately as possible.” She said the government was working to eradicate family violence in Australia. “We’re not the only country where it occurs, but in a country like Australia

it is just completely and utterly unacceptable.” Mick Crough agrees, and views programs such as the Peaceful Warrior as crucial in breaking the cycle of domestic violence. “It’s helping these boys walk tall, trust people and feel more comfortable around men,” he said. “With all the good this program is doing, I don’t know how anyone could justify cutting it.”

A LILYDALE program supporting boys impacted by family violence will end due to funding cuts. The ‘Peaceful Warriors’ program that will end in February is run by family support organisation Anglicare and is dedicated to working with boys aged nine-12 who have been impacted by family violence. The program pairs the boys with men who volunteer as mentors in the program, acting as strong male role models and offering guidance and support during what can be a tumultuous age. Anglicare Victoria chief executive Mr Paul McDonald said the program mentored boys that had been identified as socially disadvantaged or at-risk. “Many of the boys have been referred to Peaceful Warriors as a result of family violence, difficulty in managing emotions and forming relationships,” Mr McDonald said. “They’ve needed positive male role models and the axing of this program will be devastating for them.” For Lilydale resident Mick Crough, dealing with family violence is a case of prevention rather than cure. He’s volunteered with the program for the past six years, and says the ‘Peaceful Warriors’ program helps steer young boys in the right direction during critical years. “It gives many of the boys the chance to do things that they wouldn’t otherwise experience,” he said. The programs run for 12 weeks and consist of sessions that connect the boys with their mentors through various activities, described by Mick as “good clean fun.” The program was first funded by the community in 2001 before receiving government funding under John Howard in 2005. At the time it was cut, it was receiving $90,000 annually. During its 14 years, Mr McDonald says 130 men have volunteered as mentors.

Walkway an honour to blacksmith’s memory By PETER DOUGLAS AMID much fanfare, the unveiling of the rejuvenated Emerald walkway took place last Thursday. The walkway is now officially named in honour of historical figure and local blacksmith, Charlie Stapleton. Subsequently, a naming plaque and street sign have been erected to commemorate the site’s history. The Emerald Historical Society was the first to suggest the name of Mr Stapleton, who worked out of a shop at the location from 1908 to 1945. Mr Stapleton was born at Riddles Creek in 1863 and died on October 1954 at age 91. Over the past two years, the Kilvington Drive Steering Committee has been implementing a plan to upgrade and improve the shopping precinct. Locals will have noticed the works to the buildings, car park and the installation of the covered walkway between Kilvington Drive and the IGA car park. To mark the opening, granddaughter Nola Meredith attended the event, along with her sister and some of their own children. Ms Meredith, whose own father was a blacksmith, spoke highly of her grandfather. “I remember him as a fine old man,” she said. “I recall we lived in Hawthorn and my father used to travel to help him each Saturday. “We used to travel on Puffing Billy.” Ms Meredith said it was both an honour for her family and the blacksmith profession. “I’m pleased recognition has been given to a blacksmith, they were an integral part of the community,” she said. “Particularly in the Depression years, many humping a bluey would head to their shops just for the warmth.” The Kilvington Drive Steering Committee, led by Gary Tippett, Peter Siegman and Grant Day, were keen to honour the history of Emerald. They contacted the local historical society to discuss the history of the site to gain information to establish an appropriate name.

From rear, left to right, are Grant Day (KDSC ), Rebecca Howard, Helen Chafer, Ella Meredith, Alan Chafer, Christine Chafer, Clare Fitzgerald and Andrea Smith, and Peter Siegman (KDSC). From front row are Nola Meredith, Tony Meredith, Erika Meredith and Lyn Meredith. (Gary Tippett was unavailable at the opening).

Bishop comfort for accused DURING her visit to Healesville last Thursday, Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop offered comfort to those in the region supporting the Bali Nine clemency bid. Presently, the fate of duo Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran remains unclear, after a recent delay opened yet another window for appeal. This issue is particularly relevant to this region, with ‘the Mail’ recently highlighting the story of Emerald’s Marry Farrow, who has worked closely with Chan and Sukumaran at Kerobakan Prison. She has helped to support their educational and arts programs, while advocating strongly for their clemency. Ms Farrow also earlier this month attended

Australian artist Ben Quilty’s candlelight vigil for the pair in Sydney. Ms Bishop informed ‘The Mail’ she was particularly close to this issue, having spoken to them only the day before her Healesville visit, via the Consul-General’s telephone. “It was a very moving phone call,” Ms Bishop said. “They were very grateful and relieved there was a delay and expressed their deep gratitude for the Australian Government and the Australian people. “They were determined to go back to what they were doing. “Myuran is a painter, while Andrew is now studying theology and has become a priest.” Ms Bishop said the Government would con-

tinue to support their clemency bid. “What we are seeking to do is engage with Indonesia, on every level of government, particularly the decision-makers,” she said. “We are seeking to persuade them that there will be no benefit from executing two Australian citizens who have been rehabilitated in such an extraordinary way. “We are taking this time to press their case and ask their pleas for clemency are considered.” Despite their crime, Ms Bishop was confident the pair could become valued members of society. “We don’t underestimate the gravity of their crimes, they must repay their debt to their society,” she said. “They are actually contributing positively to

other prisoners in the Indonesian prison system. “I actually commend Indonesia that two prisoners have been able to rehabilitate their lives in their prison system.”

Bishop’s priority to run By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM WHEN Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop visited Healesville High School last week, she told students that despite her busy schedule, she managed to go running most mornings. After discovering a passion for athletics at high school, Ms Bishop now views running as more than just exercise. It’s a time to practice something she loves and a chance to

take time out from her hectic schedule. She views an early morning run as the perfect way to start the day. How does someone who works up to 20 hours a day and regularly travels the world make time for running? Ms Bishop’s answer is simple - it must be a priority. Regardless of how busy she may be, scheduling time for a run is important and is treated as a non-negotiable. She is often spotted running the streets of foreign cities, entourage in tow.

Opinion Victory for free speech IN RELATION to the article ‘Marching orders for move-on laws’ (Mail, 17 February), the repealing of these oppressive laws will be a just victory for our democratic right to freedom of speech. In effect, these laws allowed any given police officer to decide whether or not another individual had a right to peaceful protest. Imagine a world where our citizens had no basic right to question and voiced disapproval toward the established system of governance. How, then, would history tell the tale of equal rights, gender equality, the labour movement, or our environmental impact? Jeff Springfield, Tecoma.

It’s a trait shared by many successful people and a method that has been widely backed by psychologists. To relieve stress, bring new perspective and provide balance, scheduling and making time for yourself is essential. Julie Bishop’s message to the students at Healesville High School last week was one we can all take something away from - take time for yourself. Whether it be exercise or any other activity, make it a priority

Nominated for media award By PETER DOUGLAS MAIL Newspaper Group journalist Jesse Graham has been recognised for his fine efforts within the local media. Jesse, 22, has been selected as a finalist for the National Youth Awards (Youth in Media Award) for his article called ‘Teen’s prized story’. The article appeared in the ‘Upper Yarra Mail’ on 7 October last year and featured a story on Badger Creek teenager, Michael Hardinge, who was one of 60 Victorians recognised for their work.

Mr Hardinge worked with FReeZA volunteers to organise and run live music events, before establishing his business, Momentum Studios. Jesse started with the newspaper in 2013 and has proven to be a hard-working, talented reporter. He said the selection was a welcome surprise. “You never expect to be selected in such a respected award, but it’s nice to be acknowledged,” he said. “This particular story showed how pro-ac-

tive and positive our youth can be.” National Youth Week is the largest celebration of young people in Australia. This acknowledgement is awarded to a media outlet, or journalist, whose recent story has positively portrayed youth in the news media. The presentation dinner and ceremony will be held in Brisbane’s Ithaca Auditorium on 16 April, during National Youth Week. Cool end to hot events By KATH GANNAWAY HILLS residents were among more than 700 runners and walkers who piled into Warburton over the weekend for Community Bank Warburton Up and Running. The cool start was short lived with the heat starting to build by the time the 10k run and Half Marathon got underway, but event spokesperson Sue Hoffman said loads of people took advantage of the Yarra River to cool off after their events. If there was an ‘upset’ it was in the 5k walk where four-time winner, George Flrnalski, despite his best efforts, lost his crown to Nick Gabbilas, and Jim Berrington in second place. Three generations of the Upper Yarra’s Steer family competed again with 81-year-old Colin the oldest competitor on the day. Among some of the bigger groups were the Healesville Run Guns and the Seaford Little Athletics Club who made the Warburton Caravan Park their home-base along with many other competitors. “It was our 12th year and the event has established a reputation as a really friendly event which draws people from all over,” Ms Hoffman said. “It’s great for Warburton which was full of Up and Running people, and the river was full of Up and Running people in the afternoon.” Visit the Warburton Up and Running website or Facebook page for the link to the event results.

Con-men do their rounds Anti-weed cash cut TRAVELLING con-men have been targeting the Emerald and Macclesfield regions in recent weeks, with police receiving numerous calls from distressed residents. The con-men have been observed travelling in vehicles and on-foot. Traditionally, con-men use bullying tactics to pressure householders into handing over thousands of dollars for substandard or incomplete roofing, painting, cleaning and repair jobs. According to Sergeant Fiona Tolmie, from Emerald police, there have been confirmed reports of their targets paying for unwanted services. “They have been approaching

many people in the Emerald, Avonsleigh and Macclesfield areas,” Sgt Tolmie said. “But they seem to particularly target the more vulnerable people in the society, such as the elderly. “The targets often don’t want the work and feel ashamed once the work has been completed.” Sgt Tolmie cited one example where the con-man had secured work paving a driveway. Upon completing half the job, he demanded extra payment to complete the job. That payment was greatly in excess of the first half. The con-man then requested a cash payment, before accompanying the target to the bank where they withdrew money. Sgt Tolmie said many were left

traumatised by their ordeal and the heavy-handed tactics. According to the Victoria Government, in the past six months there have been 250 reports of con-men, who, in December last year, collected $300,000 from the elderly, stay-at-home mums and the disabled. One common tactic is demanding cash up-front, leaving householders out of pocket when the con-man does a runner. Another tactic is the ‘only available today’ offer. If anyone has information or concerns about travelling con-men, Sgt Tolmie said they could contact Emerald police on 5954 0200. Alternatively, contact can be made through the travelling Con Men Hotline is 1300 133 408.

By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM A CRUCIAL weed eradication program will be cut after losing funding from the Andrews Government. Over the past four years, the Yarra Ranges Shire has received a total of $1 million in funding towards the successful Urban Fringe Management Initiative (UFWMI). The funding allowed the council to work with local environmental groups to reduce the prevalence of noxious weeds in the Dandenong Ranges. Labor recently slashed $3 million from the successful initiative.

MP for Eastern Victoria Edward O’Donohue addressed parliament on 10 February on the effects that cutting the program could have on the biodiversity of the Dandenongs. “As locals would be aware, weeds are an ongoing issue in the Dandenong Ranges, posing a significant threat to the rich biodiversity of the area,” Mr O’Donohue said. “It is an area of high environmental significance, characterising it as a prominent tourist attraction for the state and a beautiful place to live. The government has a responsibility to protect our native flora

and fauna,” he said. He went on to say that the program had so far been successful, and called on the Minister for Climate Change and Water, Lisa Neville, to re-instate the funding. “It is regrettable that by slashing funding to this important and successful initiative, the Andrews Government is not supporting the environment, and not supporting the hard-working volunteers who dedicate many hours to its protection.” The Mail contacted Ms Neville for comment, but did not receive a response before deadline.

Sweet taste, sour result By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM IT’S no revelation that sugar can be dangerous - a cause for guilt with every bite of ice-cream, cake and chocolate. But Olinda resident Damon Gameau’s new film suggests that it may be the sugar found in “healthy” foods that’s causing issues for the increasingly overweight and sick population of Australia. ‘That Sugar Film’ will change the way you look at the sweet stuff. The film follows Damon’s quest to discover the truth about sugar. Offering himself as the subject of an experiment, Damon spent 60 days eating foods that are perceived and marketed as ‘healthy’ but, in reality, are riddled with sugar. Such foods include low-fat yoghurt, muesli bars, juices and cereals. The results were astounding. “I wasn’t eating junk food. I had cut out soft drink, ice cream and chocolate. It was the hidden sugars that people aren’t even aware of that were making all the difference,” Damon said. “Often when something is labelled as ‘diet’ the fat has been removed and sugar added in its place. So we’re seeing low-fat products that are full of sugar.” The film highlights food packaging and marketing as a contributor to the problem. “Foods are marketed as natural or healthy but quite often they have more sugar in them than Kit-Kats and those kinds of sweets,” Damon said. “It’s an accountability issue and an integrity issue.” He says misconceptions about sugar and certain foods motivated him to start the project. “Basically what inspired me was the massive level of confusion in the public space around sugar - it’s very confusing to people and consumers are sent very mixed messages,” Damon said. “For three years before I did the film, I cut back on refined sugar. I began to notice an effect on my moods and even weight loss, and

thought there was definitely something in this.” While the film is already being hailed as innovative, Damon’s mission goes further than that. He hopes to spread the message of how damaging a high sugar diet can be on a healthy body, particularly to the younger generation. Through a grant from the government, Damon was able to develop a school study program and curriculum guide. “Targeted at educating students about the effects of sugar, it provides them with the information necessary to make healthier eating choices. “This certainly isn’t a dry, academic film. It’s fun, playful and accessible for kids and families,” Damon said. “They can watch it together and get something out of it together, and hopefully change what they eat at home. It’s an important film in educating families.” It would seem that the public agrees. The trailer has been viewed by over one million people and Damon has been inundated with people asking for special screenings. The film is touring the country for a series of screenings and Q&A sessions with Damon, as well as a group of guest hosts. “I just hope it raises awareness. People don’t have to cut out sugar altogether but 30 or 40 teaspoons a day is far too high and is causing the dangerous symptoms that we’re seeing so often.” The film will screen around the country during March and the accompanying book ‘That Sugar Book’ has recently been released. The book further details the story of Damon’s experiment, the post-sugar cleanse he used to restore his health and healthy recipes, and is now available from retailers including Big W and Dymocks. That Sugar Film’s screening and Q&A session will be at the Cameo Cinema in Belgrave on Saturday 28 February, and will then tour various Victorian cinemas. LOCAL musicians will be ‘takin’ it to the street’ this weekend for the annual Belgrave Busker’s Festival. From 1pm on Saturday 28 February, registered buskers will gather at eight sites around the town, filling the whole community with music. The day will see groups gathered near Oscar’s, duos near CBA, soloists near the Sooki Lounge and youth near the Bell Tavern. There will be a ‘play-off’ at 6pm as well as a variety of other activities running on the day, including face-painting and a juggling ball workshop near Gin Lane. Street art by the Tiffaney Bishop Collective and drumming by Full Circle Drumming will start at 2pm on Blacksmiths Way. For those who can’t make it on the day, 3DMR will broadcast live from Bayview Road. Many businesses and community groups will be involved with the event, with the Cameo Outdoor Cinema and other Belgrave venues planning extended opening hours. Monitoring diabetes By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM A HIGH-TECH new diabetes monitor at Lilydale’s Inspiro Community Health Service is expected to keep patients out of hospital and take pressure off their carers. Lilydale health service Inspiro can now offer patients living with diabetes the latest in medical technology through the use of a continuous glucose monitor, or CGM. The Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation funded the purchase of the Daxcom G4 Platinum, a device that allows diabetes patients at the clinic to better understand the link between behaviour and glucose activity. Kalorama residents Stan and Martin Simek will see first-hand the benefits of the machine. Stan lives with diabetes and is a patient of the clinic, and son Martin acts as his carer - a role that involves regularly testing his blood sugar levels and administering medication daily. Stan believes the real-time feedback device will be crucial in identifying patterns in his father’s blood sugar levels throughout the day and night to prevent a hypoglycaemic episode, or ‘hypo’. “I am looking forward to using the Dexcom G4 because it will help take pressure off me as his carer and help keep my father out of hospital,” Mr Simek said. Inspiro Diabetes educator Ruth Figes thanked the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation for the donation which will improve the lives of those with diabetes. “This device enables those living with diabetes to understand when is the most effective time for them to exercise, when exercise can be detrimental to their health, when they need to eat or avoid certain foods,” Ms Figes explained.

Martin Symek, right, holds the machine that helps his father Stan, left. 134740 “What makes the Dexcom G4 Platinum unique is the real-time feedback it provides users.” The benefits of real-time feedback include a more accurate representation of clients’ glucose patterns and the device is able to generate computer reports to identify glycaemic trends. This will mean a faster response when blood sugar levels fall too low which Ms Figes said was essential in treating people living with diabetes.

Martin Simek agreed, saying the new system will help to prevent his father's symptoms. “There are very serious variations to my father’s test readings and this is very worrying,” Mr Simek said. “My father has experienced a number of hypos with the latest incident requiring two weeks of hospitalisation.” The prevalence of diabetes in the Shire of Yarra Ranges is on the rise, growing approximately 180 per cent

Picture: ROB CAREW

over the past 10 years and by 210 per cent in hot spots such as Lilydale. Ms Figes pointed out the link between the rates of diabetes death and disadvantage. “By empowering our diabetic clients to manage their chronic illness, they not only become more confident and in control of their health and lifestyle but they can also become less dependent on medication and reduce or eliminate their need for hospitalisation,” she said.

Health hub input sought YARRA Ranges Council is giving residents the chance to have their say on the new Belgrave Community Health Hub. In partnership with Inspiro, the council is building a new health service that will provide a range of community health, council and emergency relief services. An information session will be held this Thursday night for residents to give feedback on the proposed building design. Mayor Maria McCarthy said it was important that people living in the shire were given the opportunity to contribute. “Belgrave Community Health hub is for the community and we want to know what they think of the design,” councillor McCarthy said. “This is a $8.7 million project that will change the way council and community services are delivered.” Feedback can also be given online at www.yarraranges. vic.gov.au/Belgrave-HealthHub or through a form collected from Belgrave Library, Dandenong Ranges Emergency Relief Service, Inspiro or Youth Services. The session will be held on Thursday 26 February from 5.30pm to 6.30pm at the Youth Services House, 1616 Burwood Highway, Belgrave. Consultation closes on 6 March.

Secrets of their business success BUSINESSPEOPLE in the Casey-Cardinia region have the chance to learn from key local business leaders in a new speaking series launched next month. For the first time, a consortium of local businesses is sponsoring a unique event in which four chief executive officers from the manufacturing, retail and accounting sectors will be sharing the secrets of their success. Speaking at the first event will be Silvio Marinelli, coprincipal of Casey Cardinia Business of the Year winner Highview Accounting, Terry Steel from Jurgens Caravans, David Murphy from TRJ Engineering and Monique Filer from b.box for kids. Each CEO will talk for 15 to 20 minutes during which they

will outline the key factors that have led to their success in business. After the presentation, there will be a panel question-andanswer session. The event has been conceived by local business people Simon Maselli from Metamorph, Ian Ash from OrgMent Business Solutions, Norm Davidson from the Bendigo Bank and Peter Smith from New Era Management, supported by Star News Group and Casey Cardinia Business. Mr Maselli said the events were designed to enable other CEOs and business leaders learn from those who have succeeded, providing the chance to improve their own business performance. “Many of the insights pro-

vided would demonstrate just how simple actions can lead to dramatic results and how these techniques can be applied to any business, irrespective of size and domain,” he said. As a further benefit, the event will be run as a not-forprofit, with any surplus funds being donated to the 4Cs Foodback. The first session will be at the Cardinia Cultural Centre from 6pm to 8pm on Wednesday 18 March, at $25 per head, which will include tea, coffee and biscuits. Registrations are essential at http://solbr.eventbrite.com. au or attendees can pay on the night, subject to capacity. For more information, contact Mr Maselli on 0429 377 217.

ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES THIS is a wonderful opportunity to secure a rare piece of real estate in the heart of the wonderful Warburton township. It is a good size brick residence on a 735 square metre allotment with the added bonus of having a commercial zoning. The possibilities are truly endless with fantastic options. It could be purchased as an investment property to lease out. With numerous rooms, the home could be let out to a number of people or used as consulting suites on a commercial lease. Alternatively, the home could be leased out on a residential basis. The residence has some character and history and would make a fantastic renovation/restoration project. The home is a generous size and the location is amazing. A key feature of this amazing property is the rare commercial zoning. This site could be developed to take advantage of the commercial aspect. There is currently a council approved planning permit in place for the construction of five shops with three offices. All the hard work with the council has been done. It would also be a great location for a bed and breakfast. The property is located just a stone’s throw from the Yarra River and is opposite the cafes and shops of the tourist mecca of Warburton.

High-flyer type joins Bulldogs By PETER DOUGLAS WANDIN Football Club this week received a massive boost ahead of the 2015 season, with the signing of silky forward Joel Coombes. The high-flyer will provide added firepower for the Bulldogs, as they seek to go one better after losing to Woori Yallock in last year’s grand final in the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football League. The former SANFL and Ovens and Murray League player

this week received a clearance to join the Bulldogs, after crossing over from Essendon Football League club, Glenroy. Coombes brings a wealth of playing experience to the Bulldogs. After plying his trade with TAC Cup team Sandringham Dragons, Coombes initially trained with Hawthorn. Coombes is a noted goalkicker and usually spends time playing as a high half-forward. In three seasons with Ovens and Murray Football League

team Myrtleford, he booted 104 goals. He crossed to league rival Wangaratta Rovers in 2013. Coombes has also played for Eastern Football League team, East Burwood. He is also noted for his highflyer, which helped him to become a finalist in The Football Show’s ‘Almost Footy Legends’ segment. Woori Yallock last year completed a three-peat in the league, defeating Wandin by 14 points.

Our medal detectors By JAMIE STRUDLEY THE opening day of the Eastern Region Little Athletics Championships, held at the Knox AthleticsTrack on Saturday, returned many medals for Yarra Ranges Athletics athletes. Gold medals were earned by Ben Grimes (1500m), Tayleb Willis (60m Hurdles, 80m Hurdles and TripleJump), Brayden Woolridge (Shot Put and Discus), Zane Wheeler (High Jump), Tyler Weeks (Discus and Javelin), Kiara Flavel (400m, 800m, Long Jump and High Jump), Maddie Laven (400m and 800m), ClairNoonan (1500m Walk), Georgia Laven (400m and 800m), Chelsea Thompson (100m and 200m), Emily Noonan (1500m Walk), Lateisha Willis (100m, 90m Hurdles and Triple Jump). Congratulations to all the athletes for again representing the club so well. The level of support and sportsmanship is outstanding and the envy of other clubs. Another huge thank you to all the parents for performing duties throughout the very hot weekend, your efforts enable our athletes theopportunity to compete. Finally, a massive thank you and congratulations to Rob and Kate van Duuren for managing a very successful team. Your calmness, attention to details and patience was certainly the standout performance of the weekend. Next week has a normal Saturday morning athletics program for our Little Athletics athletes. Most ofthe attention will be on the events to take place later that night, our “family fun night” will be held at Morrison Reserve that night, a night of games, competitions, a few races, sticky wall, jumping castle and more. Bring your friends, neighbours and family, get an “unlimited rides” ticket and go crazy having fun. The seniors will be busy competing at the Victorian Open Track and Field Championships at Albert Parkfrom Fri-

Off-field allies lock horns By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM THEY’RE allies in improving Aboriginal health, but Eastern Health staff and some of the best Aboriginal sporting talent will become fierce opponents next month. Residents in Melbourne’s East are being invited to attend a football match and netball tournament to be held between the two groups on Eastern Health’s annual ‘Closing the Gap’ sports day. Now in its third year, the annual sports day celebrates Aboriginal culture while promoting Aboriginal health within the community.

Eastern Health’s Senior Aboriginal Service Development officer, Vera Webber, said the event was an opportunity for the community as a whole to “connect with respect” with the Aboriginal community. “The aim of the day is to celebrate the spirit of reconciliation, and also better inform the community about the dedicated Aboriginal health services we have,” Ms Webber said. “Aboriginal health continues to be one of Eastern Health’s major priorities.” In previous years, Ms Webber said, the sports day had achieved its goal of uniting the

community while showcasing some of the best Aboriginal sporting talent in the region. “It’s been a terrific way of breaking down cultural barriers and encouraging collaboration between Eastern Health and local Aboriginal communities.” As well as a netball tournament, the day will feature children’s activities, post-match entertainment from Philly and Scott Darlow as well as a traditional ’Welcome to Country’. The Eastern Health Closing the Gap Sports Day will be held on Sunday 1 March at the Don Road Sporting Complex in Healesville from noon.

Ballkids bask in the glor y By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM LOCAL tennis clubs celebrated their star ballkids earlier this month. Ben Donald and Grace Staindl-Dymond from Ferny Creek Tennis Club, Mitchell van Dijk from Selby Tennis Club and Oskar Svihla, Mitchell Laing and Sebastian Sutterby from Upwey South Tennis club were all chosen for the prestigious role at the 2015 Australian Open. The ballkids and junior tennis players spoke of their memorable moments and exciting experiences at the tournament. “Being a ballkid was one of the best experiences of my life, brushing past the best of the best in the world or maybe being on court with the next big thing,” Mitchell said. Sebastian also enjoyed the interaction with tennis’ biggest stars. “The players are all really friendly and you get to know their quirks,” he said. Tennis coach Diana Sutterby said the twoweek tournament was rewarding but followed hard work and extensive preparation for the juniors. “Being a ballkid is a fabulous experience in so many ways. Kids meet new friends, learn to work as a team and experience first-hand what goes on behind the scenes in a grand slam,” Diana said. “After passing through level one and two trials, the kids participate in several weekend training sessions throughout the year showing commitment and dedication to the cause.” Ballkids at the Australian Open are aged between 12 and 15 years old and undergo a rigorous selection process. This year, 380 ballkids were selected from all over Australia as well as multiple Asian countries. Applications are now open for the 2016 ballkid squad and Extreme Tennis will be hosting Level 1 trials on behalf of the Australian Open on Saturday 21 March at Upwey South Tennis Club. For more information or to apply, visit www. tennis.com.au.

Oskar Svihla, Mitchell Laing, Grace Staindl-Dymond, Mitchell van Dijk, Sebastian Sutterby and Ben Donald were ballkids at the 2015 Australian Open.

Town streets ahead in Summer Cup By DENNIS FULLER THE second round of the threeround Summer Cup was played last Saturday at Emerald Golf Club under benign conditions tending to hotness. Ross Martin (10) went into the round with +7 but was overtaken by his playing partner in Steve Town (15) who came in with an astonishing +9 to snuggle into his +6 the previous week for a massive +15 after two rounds.

Martin remains in second place on +9 followed by Mark Starick (12) barking at his heels with +8. These two appear to be the main challengers but it seems to be a big ask for them to bridge the gap to collar Town for the lead. The daily comp, of course, went to Town easily and the B Grade winner was John Carvill (21) who hit some good form for +5. Starick came in with +3 on the day while Martin, Dave Aitken

(28) and Leigh Morison (18) all had scores of +2. Mike Litchfield was nearest the pin on 4th and the 13th, Ian Scot the 7th, Town the 12th, and John Carvill picked up the pro pin lolly on the 18th. The ladies event is looking more and more a one-horse race with Benita Balfour screaming away to a distant lead with the others sucking dust with little chance of bridging the gap.

On Wednesday, when the Old and Faded Golfers struggled into the club, they found it was a two part comp. It was par for the first nine and a stableford for the second with a purse of cash for each. At the end of the first nine it was a three-way tie with Bobby Kennedy (23), Ian Scott (27) and Mike Litchfield (8) all on +4. The second nine saw John Piggott (21) kill off all contenders with 24 stableford points, over Geoff Whittaker (23) with 21.

It’s checkmate as Knights defeat Kings By STEVE BROWN FTGDCA THE penultimate round of the Reeves Shield produced a shock outright victory for the in-form Knoxfield Knights when they defeated Upper Ferntree Gully by an innings and three wickets. Resuming at 2/58, Knoxfield lost five wickets as they overhauled the Kings’ total of just 131, before declaring and inviting Upper Gully to bat again. The Kings then declared at 8/147, setting the Knights 140 to win. They managed to take maximum points, losing seven wickets in a game that could have gone either way. The win propels Knoxfield into fifth place, with a slim hope of finals action. Knox Gardens hauled in the 28 runs required against Upwey Tecoma (89) and decided to bat on, making 208, with captain Steve Alderton and Scott McInerney scoring halfcenturies. The Falcons move to fourth on the table while Upwey drop to sixth. Kyle Snyman, with 75, almost stole the show for Eildon Park against Johnson Park as the Sharks got the chocolates by just 31 runs. Steve Devenish and Ben Stallworthy both took four wickets to help consolidate their team’s position in the four. Monbulk resumed at 5/50 against Ferntree Gully (108). However, the Hawks could not handle Jarrod Bradley with 6/31 and they were toppled for just 86. Bradley has enjoyed a good year with the ball, taking 32 wickets at 10. The Basin returned to the winners’ list, as did Jake Best with 35 as the Bears defeated bottom side Belgrave by five wickets. Spinner Ben Carnell was the pick of the Magpie bowlers with 3/24. Belgrave must defeat Johnson Park and rely on Upwey Tecoma getting the points over Upper Gully in the final round to avoid relegation to Decoite Shield. Ladder (provisional), round 12: Eildon Park 57, The Basin 54, Johnson Park 45, Knox Gardens 42, Knoxfield 37, Upwey Tecoma 36, Ferntree Gully 27, Monbulk 27, Upper Gully 21, Belgrave 18. SCORES REEVES SHIELD Ferntree Gully 108 (Powell 5/30) d Monbulk 86 (J. Bradley 6/31).

Finals bound after victory By STEVE UTTING THERE were some great results for the Monbulk Juniors on the weekend with the under-13s defeating Upwey in an exciting, high-scoring affair. It was a real team performance in their last home-and-away match. The win put them into fourth position on the ladder and will now play in a semi-final. The under-17s also had a great win, thanks to runs from James Fenby and Josh Rak. Another win next Saturday in their last match will see them play finals also. A great match from Brendan TeBoekhurst was not enough for the under-15s to get over the line. They play their last match on Wednesday night at Monbulk. The two under-10 and two under-11 teams all play their last matches next Friday night. Last Friday night also saw the final Milo in2Cricket session for these 100 kids. Many thanks to Damian Howard and all of his helpers for another fun and successful season of Milo cricket at Monbulk. We hope to see many of these kids playing junior cricket for Monbulk in the coming years. In the seniors, the thirds continued on their winning way, securing top spot on the ladder with a strong win over Eildon Park. Half-centuries to Matt Greggor and Paul Utting, and some great bowling by Rick Lamers and Jason Dekkers, did the job. Five-wicket hauls to Aaron Powell (in the seniors) and Chris Defina (in the reserves) was not enough for their teams to beat Ferntree Gully. Rod Turpin was again the fourths highest run scorer. Senior presentation night will now be held on Friday 17 April, at Yarra Ranges Estate. This change in date will hopefully allow more people to attend, especially the many under-17s and under-15s (and families) who are playing senior cricket. The junior presentation afternoon is on Sunday 22 March, at the Logcabin, starting at 3.30pm. SCORES First XI: FTG 108 (A. Powell 5/30) d Monbulk 86. Second XI: FTG 9/176 (C. Defina 5/29, M.
