of a motion to rescind which will be considered at the next council meeting. “If work is recommenced, there will be consultation at the appropriate times during the development of the PSP for the estate,” Mr Wilkinson said. In August 2014, the council resolved to cease strategic work on the Collison Estate. Cr Stapledon said it was important to consult with residents to find a way forward. The area has also been zoned urban

It was also suggested at the council meeting this month that the area has become subject to ‘planning blight’ because properties get run down and residents aren’t prepared to make a financial investment.

growth which has left some residents with their hands tied. Narre Warren resident Steve Peter owns a large block of land along Mayfield Road but is unable to develop it because of the area’s zoning. “We can’t build here,” he said. Fellow resident Graham Smith has encouraged the council to finish off the PSP for the area, and allow residents to have their say on its future. “There were a lot of people disappointed last August when the PSP

RESIDENTS of a Cranbourne estate say they feel like outcasts and that their estate has been left severely underdeveloped. The Collison Estate’s Bob Vawdrey said the area was a thorn in City of Casey’s side. “Nobody wants to make a decision,” said the resident of 40 years. “It was beautiful when we first came here, but I don’t like it now.” “It’s got lots of undesirable elements.” The Cranbourne East resident said he was contemplating a move out of the area. Residents Eileen and Ron Vorback, who have been there nearly just as long, have decided to move houses because their large block is too big to maintain. City of Casey councillor Amanda Stapledon tabled a petition at a council meeting this month with 51 signatures from residents in the estate. In it, residents called for the area’s precinct structure plan to be resumed in order to create some certainty about the area’s future. However, councillor Gary Rowe put forward a rescission motion in response to the petition which was carried. Residents are concerned about the rescission motion which would mean that no works would be carried out until August. Cr Stapledon said people in the estate “feel differently about their future” and said to do nothing would be a “travesty”. Manager of Strategic Development at Casey council David Wilkinson said that the council requested the former

Thief’s $5000 card spree By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A MAN has used a credit card stolen from a charity volunteer’s handbag for a $5000 top-up of his online gambling account. The 24-year-old pleaded guilty to theft and proceeds-of-crime offences in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Monday, having told police he regarded the credit card as “free money”. Police prosecutor First Constable Tess Davison told the court a St Vin-
cent’s de Paul volunteer had delivered goods to a Hampton Park home on 6 August last year. Soon after leaving, she realised she’d left behind her $300 handbag containing $50 cash, a mobile phone, rosary and credit card. There was no sign of it at the house when she returned. The accused admitted to police he had paid his Sportsbet account online using the credit card that afternoon, claiming a friend had delivered him
the handbag after “finding it on a letterbox”. Twenty minutes later, the victim reported the theft to her bank. First Const Davison told the court that police found the victim’s handbag in the bedroom wardrobe of the accused on 24 September, along with silver jewellery stolen from his sister and two opened Westpac account statements belonging to a third party. The accused - who was also found at home with a zip-lock bag of canna-
bis - told police he regretted the theft but had regarded the credit card as “free money”. Defence lawyer Siva Kandasamy said the accused performed his “opportunistic” crime in order to pay gambling debts. There was no benefit from the crime as the $5000 and the sister’s jewellery were recovered, Mr Kandasamy said. Magistrate Barry Schultz said the accused - who had no prior convictions
- was entitled to be “cut some slack” on his first time in court. “It’s not the most sophisticated crime ... but these are serious matters. These are people who worked hard for their things. “As you must know, we all have to work hard for what we get in life. “There are no shortcuts.” The man was fined $1200 without conviction.
Sisters and sons brave the shave for cancer By BRIDGET SCOTT
A CRANBOURNE man has unwittingly lit a grassfire while trying to take a shortcut in his car. The man had moved off the road and was driving beside the train track near Merinda Park station just after 6pm on Tuesday 17 February when his car got stuck in a rut and the exhaust ignited a fire. CFA crews were called to the blaze and no-one was injured in the incident.

TWO sisters have made a pledge to make a difference and will lose their locks in the name of cancer. After Maxine Shuster and Karen McDonald lost their mum to cancer 17 years ago, they learnt the full impact that the disease can make. Many years later, the pair who are directors of Shooting Stars Early Learning Centre, Cranbourne North, will shave their heads to make a difference. “We aren’t clever enough to cure it ourselves, and we thought this is the best way we could contribute,” Ms McDonald said. The women’s sons will also lose their hair for the cause. “We don’t want our children to go through the same thing,” she said. The shave will take place on Friday 13 March at the early learning centre, and the pair hope to get as many local businesses and families involved as they can. TBM Training will also sponsor the women by holding a free dress day for their employees, and would match the total amount that their employees donated.

THE Chairman of Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) has stood down within the same week that the authority has back flipped and allowed some trainers involved in the live baiting scandal to race their dogs. The board has also suspended an additional five trainers from the Tooradin Trial Track including Kenneth Hodges, Brett Mackie, James Reynolds, Jon Roberts and Eric Sykes. On Monday 23 February, Peter Caillard said he advised the Minister for Racing, Martin Pakula, of his resignation. In a statement on the GRV website, the former chairman said he was an outsider of the industry when appointed in 2012, and that the organisation is very different now to what it was. He said despite a number of changes, it was “still not enough to prevent the type of sickening practices seen at the privately owned Tooradin Trial Track”. “Although I had read that the archaic practice of live baiting had occurred years ago, it was distressing to discover that it was still occurring in recent times,” he said. “Had this practice been brought to my attention earlier then it could have been stopped earlier. “It was not and I did not.” In the wake of the scandal, the board of GRV immediately suspended greyhounds owned or trained by registered persons involved in the live baiting allegations. However on Saturday, the board issued another statement which said that as a result of legal advice, GRV has resolved that if the owners of the suspended greyhounds provide

Cap it off COUNCILS are saying if the State Government caps rates to CPI it will cost jobs. Well I say why not do a review of councils. How many top heavy managers (fat cats) do we have in each council. I notIced at the last two council elections when Casey councillors were elected the first thing they did was to give themselves a pay rise. I also would like to check credit card details of all councils and travel registers. We need to stop wasteful spending and give back to the community with lower rates, and that’s how you get respect. A CRANBOURNE primary school has done its bit in the fight for cyber safety with a creative cartoon based around the theme. With a $10,000 Bullystoppers grant from the government, students from Cranbourne Carlisle Primary School worked with illustrator Ben Sanders to create a cartoon. The short clip was about protecting passwords and 10 lucky children went to the city to record the voices at the Creativa Web Videos studio. Information and communication technology co-ordinator Tobin
Cuss said the children auditioned and voted for those who would have their voices recorded for the final version. He said it was about education, but in a fun way. Mr Cuss said the students thoroughly enjoyed the process. “Students came up with the story lines and the illustrator did the pics,” he said. “The school really prides itself on trying to be up to date with technology,” he said. “Understanding how to use online accounts is important for children in this day and age,” he said.

A GROUP of front runners joined hands last week to take a stand against all forms of violence. Community leaders including local MPs, councillors, representatives from the Casey Multi Faith Network and police officers gathered in Narre Warren on Friday 20 February to make a statement of intent against violence in the community. The statement was part of a collective effort to unite against all forms of violence, and reaffirm the stance that leaders in the community won’t stand for any type of discrimination. It also highlighted that the City of Casey would welcome people from different, countries, religions and cultures. Local Inspector Paul Breen, who also spoke out late last year, said this was “a test of our leadership.” “I am calling you all to be strong in your conviction against violence and not waiver to the criminal
minority who may seek to threaten our peaceful existence,” he said. “As the Local Area Commander, I give you, the community a very firm commitment that Victoria Police will preserve the peace and uphold the law by increasing our patrols, proactively targeting any identified ‘hot spots’ and, being highly vis-

Bubble, bubble pancake trouble THE youngest students at Lynbrook Primary School raised money for a much needed cause last week. In honour of Uniting Care Pancake Day, the preps raised more than $100 for those less fortunate than themselves on Tuesday 17 February. Around 160 children from across eight foundation classes (Preps) cooked up a storm and donated a gold coin which will go towards Uniting Care. Teacher Rebekah Booth said the children loved the novelty of it all. “The children enjoyed watching the pancakes bubble and flipping them as they turned golden brown,” she said. “Eating them was their favourite part.”

Irate over school loo A MOTHER of students at a Cranbourne school has been left outraged by the state of some of the school’s facilities. Natasha Marsh, whose children attend Cranbourne South Primary School, was shocked when she discovered the standard of the toilet facilities. The concerned mother said she had lobbied the Department of Education for an upgrade, but her calls had gone unanswered. “It’s been going back and forth for more than six months,” she said. She said the “stench from the toilets was atrocious” and she contacted the
Department of Education as a concerned parent. “It’s a health issue,” she said. “I’ve heard complaints from several parents regarding it.” Ms Marsh said the toilet was the only toilet facility in the school and it was not functioning properly. “They must provide a feasible working amenity,” Ms Marsh said. In an email to the department, she listed a set of issues which included a sewer problem, broken locks, and doors jamming shut, doors not shutting, broken toilet roll holders and broken toilet seats. Ms Marsh said the doors which
jammed shut were a concern in case a young student was not able to get out. “It’s not good enough,” she said. Acting principal Elene Archbold however issued a statement on behalf of the school which said the school had recently conducted repairs and maintenance on the toilets. “These repairs include repairing locks on doors, replacing toilet roll holders and having a plumber come out regularly to address faulty toilet units,” she said. “In addition, our toilets are cleaned every night by professional cleaners, and are maintained on a regular basis. A routine inspection last night confirmed that
all toilets are in good working order,” she said. “Our school is also in the process of being connected to mains sewerage - once an engineer’s report is complete, the project will be put to tender.” A spokesperson from the Department of Education also confirmed there had been funding provided for Cranbourne South Primary School to be connected to mains sewerage. “Once the final engineer’s report is complete, the department will issue a tender for this project,” they said. “All Victorian schools receive annual maintenance funding, and are responsible for the maintenance and cleaning of their facilities.“
Help wanted: more players and a coach By BRIDGET SCOTT ORGANISERS of an all-abilities football team in Cranbourne have called for more players and a coach to take the team forward this season. Julie Cass, co-ordinator of the Cranbourne All Abilities football team, said they were in need of more players as well as a coach. The team, which is affiliated with the Cranbourne Football Club and based at Casey Fields, has operated for six years and offers a place for people aged 14-40. Ms Cass said the team was open to anyone with an intellectual or physical disability with about 20 players on the list so far. With the first training session for the season last Tues-
day, Ms Cass said they hoped to attract at least a dozen more boys, girls, men and women to the side. “It has a really good social network for both guys and girls,” she said. “We have about 20 players on our list at the moment, but I’m not sure if they will all return.” “We would love at least 12 more.” Ms Cass said her own son, who was nearly 31, played and was a foundation member of the club. “Ricky is one of the original members,” she said. “He really enjoys Aussie Rules, the social aspect and getting out there with his mates.” The team has both home

Road upgrade fast-tracked By BRIDGET SCOTT MINISTER for Roads Luke Donnellan has announced that $500,000 for the duplication of Thompson’s Road will be fast-tracked so that planning can commence immediately. The Narre Warren North MP made this announcement after the Andrews Labor Government made a commit-
ment to improve this road between East Link and Clyde Road in Cranbourne. The upgrade is planned to improve road safety and ease congestion on the road which carries anywhere up to 24,000 vehicles each day. It’s expected this number will rise to 60,000 by the year 2030.
The planning of the duplication will also include further consideration of the removal of the level crossing, as well as environmental studies and traffic modelling. This is expected to be completed within 12 months, and local residents and road users will have the chance to comment on proposed plans and attend consultation and information sessions.
State Labor Member for Narre Warren South Judith Graley said the government was dedicated to deliver on this promise. “Our community relies upon this road, local families and businesses use it each and every day, yet the previous government refused to take action, refused to tackle the ever worsening con-
gestion and lengthy travel times,” Ms Graley said. “This upgrade will make a significant difference in the lives of many local residents, and I can assure them that we won’t waste a single second, we will get on with the job of upgrading our local roads and making them safer,” she said.
Vital lessons taught early By LACHLAN MOORHEAD CHILDREN from a number of primary schools in Casey were this week taught at Lysterfield Lake how to stay alive in water. It comes after the tragic drowning of a five-year-old boy at the lake in February last year. There have been three reported drowning deaths at Lysterfield Lake since 1 July 2000, according to Life Saving Victoria (LSV) statistics. The Open Water Learning Experience program, organised by LSV, ran for two sessions on Tuesday at the lake, aiming to equip children with skills to help others in an emergency in the water. “We aim to run the program in a local open water environment that participants may already be familiar with, or are likely to visit, to make them aware of potential hazards and dangers and to develop skills and knowledge to enjoy their local water environment safely,” LSV general manager Education Services Kate Simpson said. The program’s activities include rescue strategies and how to use everyday items to perform a rescue. Students also practise important survival techniques, as well as how to enter and exit the water safely, and take part in safe body-
boarding. The two-hour sessions were subsidised by the Casey Council and attended by students from Narre Warren North Primary, Cranbourne East Primary and Devon Meadows Primary. “We find that cost is often a barrier for schools to participate in external programs, so accessing community grants enables us to subsidise costs and attract more schools to participate in our programs,” Ms Simpson said. It’s understood 47 per cent of drowning deaths in 2013/’14 occurred at inland waterways, according to LSV. The Open Water Learning Experience program is offered to schools and community groups across Victoria, with a number of tours into regional areas. LSV will be running the same program at Lysterfield Lake for seniors, aged 60 years plus, next month. In January 2013, a Cranbourne West man drowned at Lysterfield Lake while trying to rescue two children who had been using a dinghy. The children made it back to shore unharmed. Margaret, from Cranbourne East Primary, was one of many Casey students taught swimming For more information, visit www.life- survival techniques by Life Saving Victoria staff members at Lysterfield Lake this week. 135004 Picture: ROB CAREW savingvictoria.com.au.

A+ and Top Class tapping By GEORGIA WESTGARTH TWO sisters from Casey Grammar School have tapped their way to the top and will be performing amongst the highest achieving dance students from 2014. The VCE ‘Top Class Dance’ concert presents a range of dance styles from VCE and VET dance students from across Victoria. Drama Coordinator at Casey Grammar School, Natalie Burns said both sisters, Brielle and Tiarna Shiels received an A+ in their examination, giving them the opportunity to audition for Top Class. “Both girls will be performing solo tap routines, an outstanding achievement given that it is often an under represented dance style,” Ms Burns said. The Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority put together a season of excellence performance each year, where younger students can get a peep past the curtain and an insight into VCE dance. “The girls studied dance off campus by distance education and only a select few from across
the state are invited to audition and even fewer are picked for the concert,” Ms Burns said. Brielle Shiels, 17, said she was a little nervous and excited at the same time for the performance. “It will be such a great experience to perform in front of a large audience and dance in such a beautiful venue,” Brielle said. The sisters have both been dancing since kindergarten and 19-year-old Tiarna can still remember watching the Top Class Dance concert as a younger student. “I felt really inspired, I had always hoped to get an invitation to audition but it still came as a complete surprise,” Tiarna said. The dancing duo will take centre stage on Thursday 19 February at the Melbourne Recital Centre at 10.30am and 2pm. “VET Dance was definitely my favourite subject in Year 12. “I found it doubled as both an academic subject and as an outlet… I feel really privileged to have been chosen,” Tiarna said.

Wait over, new Mazda is out THE wait for the arrival of the all-new Mazda 2 is over with Mazda’s latest light car launched in November.
Re-imagined from the ground up and integrating the elegant lines of Mazda’s awardwinning KODO – Soul of Motion design language and innovative SKYACTIV technology, the new Mazda 2 has more power yet is more fuel efficient, offers unequalled styling and is better connected than any of its predecessors. Available as a hatch, the Mazda 2 comes with two transmission types, the six-speed SKYACTIV-Drive automatic and six-speed SKYACTIV-MT manual, and offers two 1.5 litre SKYACTIV-G petrol engine alternatives. The standard specification puts out 79kW of power and 139Nm of torque, while the higher specification version has 81kW of power and 141Nm of torque, both of which are an improvement on the outgoing model. In a win for buyers, the Mazda 2 boasts best-ever fuel consumption numbers. The high spec SKYACTIVG 1.5 litre petrol engine with SKYACTIV-Drive automatic transmission sips as little as 4.9 litres per 100 kilometres, an improvement of 28 per cent over the old model, while the standard specification SKYACTIV-G 1.5 litre petrol engine with SKYACTIV-MT manual transmission uses just 5.4 litres
per 100 kilometres, an improvement of 15 per cent compared to the outgoing engine. In a first for the segment, the Mazda 2 introduces a head-up active driving display on the high grade Genki model. In addition, Genki features the next-generation HMI with commander control allowing safe access to navigation, communications and infotainment including social media via MZD Connect, and i-ACTIVSENSE technology, in the form of Smart City Brake Support, is available as an option across the entire range. Also new for Mazda’s smallest car are four different interior trim options. The Neo, Maxx and Genki each has its own unique look and feel, with a further colour pack option available on the Maxx. The newest generation Mazda 2 is available in eight striking colours including new Dynamic Blue Mica and Smoky Rose Mica, the popular Soul Red makes its debut on Mazda2, while Aluminium Metallic, Black Mica, Snowflake White Pearl Mica, Gunmetal Blue Mica and Metropolitan Grey Mica round out the palette. With Mazda dealers taking orders now, the Mazda 2 comes in three grades, including Neo, Maxx and Genki with prices starting at $16,990 driveaway for the Neo six-speed manual, a reduction on the manufacturers' list price of the previous model. The full range is in stock

Laser treatment that is safe, effective and affordable! DANDENONG DERMATOLOGY CENTRE, WITH THEIR EXTENSIVE RANGE OF MEDICAL GRADE LASERS, OFFER LASER TREATMENT FOR MANY SKIN CONDITIONS AND MOST SKIN TYPES. The versatile Dual Yellow Copper Bromide laser is a safe and effective treatment for a wide range of blemishes.
Who can be treated? Almost all skin types can be successfully treated with Dual Yellow laser for a wide range of blemishes, including vascular (red veins) and other lesions
Can all areas of the body be treated? Most areas including face, neck, chest, back, hands, arms and legs
How many treatments do I need? Most vascular (red veins) and pigmented (dark spots) need approximately 3-4 treatments
Does the treatment hurt? No anaesthetic is necessary and is well tolerated by most patients, with the sensation being described as a warm pinprick on the skin
Is the treatment safe? The Dual Yellow laser is operated by our experienced nurse/laser practitioner and is completely safe, targeting only the blemish
How soon will I see results? Mostly the results are immediate with the vascular lesions but some other lesions may take a week or so to improve
What conditions can be treated? Age spots on hands: Treatment to the backs of hands is very effective and removes unsightly sun damage or “age” spots. Freckles: Most common pigmented lesions are “freckles” caused by too much sun exposure. Sun damage: The yellow light helps generate new collagen, the essential protein for giving skin elasticity, so your skin will appear refreshed and its texture improved Skin tags: Skin tags and other benign raised lesions can be smoothed and flattened without damage to the surrounding skin Pigmentation/Melasma: This darkened skin discolouration typically appears on the sun exposed areas such as cheeks, forehead and nose. Treatment is effective and lighten the discolouration of the skin
Vascular lesions/Blood vessels: Broken capillaries or vascular lesions occur when the small capillaries become dilated; the laser shrinks the capillaries, providing instant cosmetic improvement.
WHAT’S NEW: The Ellipse is the latest generation IPL (intense pulse light). We can treat a variety of conditions safely: Rosacea: A common skin condition that causes red pimples, flushing and broken capillaries (telangiectasia) affecting mainly the cheeks and nose of adults. This irritating condition, often causing uncomfortable face flushing and can be safely treated with almost no down time and requiring approx 1-4 treatments at one month apart. The Ellipse laser can treat several skin types. Sun damage: Skin aging is accelerated by sun exposure. For the removal of age spots, uneven pigmentation and diffuse redness, the Ellipse laser is the latest technology available. Ellipse treatment of sun damaged skin help you keep a younger and fresher look with a full-face treatment taking less than 20 minutes. Again, most skin types can be treated. Acne: A common skin disease of teenagers, often affecting the face, neck, chest, shoulders and back, associated with overproduction of sebum (oily substance). Ellipse treatment is effective by slowing down the production of the sebum, with a typical course of therapy being four treatments at three weeks apart. Vascular lesions: These lesions can include port wine stains, broken capillaries, diffuse redness, haemangiomas and cherry angiomas. They can occur in many sizes and shapes and can be found all over the body. Most skin types are easily treated with the Ellipse being set at the correct energy output for your individual complexion.
All treatments are tailored to the individual and are safe, effective and affordable! Dandenong Dermatology Centre offers your first assessment consultation for free! To arrange an appointment just call 9791 3455.

Step up to our award winning Milan, voted HIA’s Best Display Home 2014.* The Milan 29 from our Aspire range has just won the 2014 HIA Victorian division Best Display Home between $250,001 – 300,000. It’s an architect designed home ofering afordable luxury, space and light and a range of innovative features. The sun court, for instance, actually increases the usable interior space and floods the living areas with light. Or as the judges said: “A very open home that gives the impression it is bigger than it actually is.
“Excellent workmanship, attention to detail and a feeling of spaciousness.” – HIA Judges
You can sense the diference immediately with generously proportioned spaces that flow together naturally to create vistas and extended views with picture windows usually only found in more expensive homes. The high level of luxury inclusions also caught the eye of the judges who said the Caesarstone benches, Franke sinks and Smeg appliances “represent value for money”. The overall style and elegance of this four bedroom home is typified by the raised ceiling above the dining area. Visit the Milan today – and judge for yourself.

Selfless work not neglected By LACHLAN MOORHEAD MEMBERS from the Endeavour Hills Rotary Club this week gave back to the volunteers who have already given so much to their community. The volunteers at the Andrews Centre in Endeavour Hills don’t help the needy to gain any recognition. But that hasn’t stopped the Casey community from thanking and rewarding the local crisis and counselling centre. The money raised from the Rotary Club of Endeavour Hills’ Golf Day, held at Cranbourne Golf Club on Monday 23 February, will be largely donated to the Andrews Centre to assist in its work. While recently helping the Andrews Centre with a $7000 renovation of its kitchen, Endeavour Hills Rotarian John O’Reilly said his club was blown away by the selfless work carried out by the facility’s volunteers for the less fortunate. “They work in the community, we work for the community, and these people are just doing amazing things,” he said of the Andrews Centre. “They are all professional people who have retired and they volunteer their time. “We were so impressed with what they do and we thought let’s not just do the kitchen but let’s also throw
some money at them, too.” Despite Monday’s threatening weather, the Rotary Club was able to organise a lunch to be held instead of a dinner and kept the rain at bay until a very successful 12hole competition was played later in the afternoon. “We got out of a real tight spot, and made a lot of money,” he said. “I thank the golfers for the generosity, they were fabulous.” John was hoping to raise a gross total of $16,000 and while the donations are still being collated, he is confident that target was exceeded. Various other charities will also benefit from funds raised at the Golf Day, sponsored by major partner Bendigo Bank, and Mr O’Reilly said the Andrews Centre would be the main beneficiary. “When you think about people who can’t speak English and can’t get a job, when they haven’t got food - there’s so many basic things that the Andrews Centre helps out with,” he said. “They’re very important, in my opinion, and it’s done with love. “They’re very genuine and that’s what blew us away.” For more information, visit www.rotaryendeavourhills. org.au.

Business profile
Fountain of life’s landmarks THEY met at a party at the Fountain Gate Hotel, so it was hardly surprising that when Ben and Diana Harold were looking for the perfect wedding reception venue they would return there. “We chose Fountain Gate Hotel because it was close to home and we wanted to be able to save money due to the fact that we are saving for our house,” Diana said. “I had my 21st at Fountain Gate Hotel and it was great then, so I had no hesitation with booking our reception.” In fact it was at her 21st that Diana met her future husband after he had been invited by her parents - it was love at first sight and they have been together ever since. But while cost had been a first concern, it was not the whole reason for choosing the Fountain Gate Hotel as their venue. “I loved how dedicated and enthusiastic (staff) Kelly and Sandy were about making sure that our reception was everything we wanted. “They were always able to answer our calls and always willing to meet,” Diana said. “Both my husband and I were blown away by the service and dedication of the staff and Foun-
tain Gate Hotel. “Everything worked like clockwork and no request was too hard. “The highlights to me were seeing how great the reception was decorated and our entrance. “I would definitely recommend Fountain Gate Hotel as a reception. “They cater to your every whim and their main aim was to make me and my now husband happy.” Venue manager Sandy Chambers has had 18 years in hospitality and has been managing this venue since September. She said the hotel offered a stylish bistro along with a lounge bar and TAB and Keno facilities. It can cater for functions from 21st birthday parties to engagements, weddings and all sorts of corporate events in either cocktail or sit-down style. Sandy and her friendly team focus on providing great food, great drink specials and excellent service and making sure a special occasion is everything that clients would want it to be. The Hotel Fountain Gate is at Westfield Fountain Gate, Magid Drive, Narre Warren. Phone 9704 7922.

Connecting people with the local sport they love.
Some like it hot By JARROD POTTER THE heat set in for Melbourne’s intra-club match at Casey Fields on Thursday, but signs for the club were equally as bright as players - new, old or on the rise - relished their opportunity to shine. With the mercury soaring to over 30 degrees, the Demons decided for three 20-minute periods to shake off the rust from the break and prepare for their first NAB Challenge match. Nathan Jones - no stranger to the south east with his upbringing on the Mornington Peninsula and playing for the Dandenong Stingrays in the TAC Cup - led the way as per usual, but for a change had a few willing lieutenants to fight alongside the skipper. Heritier Lumumba made an impact in his first official outing, while Christian Salem was clearly among the best on field - combining his speed with precision passing to captivate the strong crowd that flocked to the Cranbourne-based venue. Jesse Hogan - completely healed after a horror knee injury last year ruled him out of 2014 - led well, marked even better and slotted three goals to give Melbourne fans something to smile about. The locals kept an eye on one of their own Devon Meadows product James Harmes - who broke the lines and tackled well in the searing heat as he looks to earn his AFL debut and elevation from the rookie list this season. Cranbourne’s Mitch White didn’t line up in the match - a foot injury delaying his inaugural AFL pre-season. Casey Scorpions’ contingent had a good warm-up from the intra-club as well with 10 VFL-listed players - including Garfield’s Eddie Morris - taking the field as part of the highintensity skirmish. Melbourne will face Fremantle in their first NAB Challenge match on Thursday 5 March.

Cavaliers back at top flight in a tough fight By JARROD POTTER FIGHTING tooth and nail throughout the arduous grading phase, a pair of Casey Cavaliers’ junior basketball teams has earned the right to play in the top tier this season. After a one-year gap without any teams making it into Victorian Championship ranks, the Cavaliers doubled their success this season with Casey’s under-14 boys - coached by Casey senior men’s assistant coach Simon Phillips - defeating Mornington 45-34 to push into the best junior division. While the under-12 (1) boys earned their place on the back of a 47-42 win over Diamond Valley. Under-12s coach Mitch Taylor who also plays for the senior men’s Cavaliers - was proud to see his charges make the step up to the best ranks. “I’m super proud of the boys making VC (Victorian Championship) as it’s such a massive effort and a big
step in the right direction for our under-12 program,” Taylor said. “We had a few close calls throughout grading but the fact that at 10 years of age the boys have the composure to come back and win after being down by five with one minute to go against the Melbourne Tigers - which turned out to be a crucial win and then they did it again in our VC qualifying game is a credit to them and their never say die attitude.”
Taylor remembers how playing in that level during juniors improved his basketball and hopes his charges relish the opportunity to shine on the big stage themselves. “I played at the VC level for Casey in under 16s and under 18s which helped me enormously with my knowledge of the game and playing experience,” Taylor said. “In the under-16s season my team only won one game (which included an 88 point loss to Dante Exum’s Keilor side), but having that season up against the best players in Victoria and some of the best in Australia for my age, allowed myself and my team to see the level of skill and intensity you have to play at every week to be at their level. “So with my under 12s making VC this is not only going to improve them this season as they play at this elite level but without them even realising, it will be helping them for many sea-
sons to come.” Narrowly missing out on three teams in the top grade, the Cavaliers under-18 side fell at the last VC hurdle in a gutsy 71-77 defeat against Frankston. There remains one more Cavaliers squad in the hunt for a VC place as the under-20 girls take to the court on Friday night for their shot in the top flight after defeating Western Port on Friday night 39-26. Competing in the Metro 1 competition this season will be 18.1 boys, 12.2 boys and 12.1 girls while the 16.1 and 14.1 girls are in the hunt to qualify for Metro 1 with matches scheduled this week. In other Cavaliers news, the Casey senior men took to the court on Thursday evening and put up a manful battle against the higher ranked State Championship Men’s team Waverley. The Cavaliers were narrowly bested in overtime by two points.
PLAYING football alongside Hawthorn’s Shaun Burgoyne and Fremantle’s Stephen Hill would never have crossed Jay Kennedy-Harris’ mind when he was drafted to Melbourne in 2013. But those club based allegiances were put aside just for one match on Friday night as the best of the AFL’s indigenous champions joined up to represent their heritage as the Indigenous All-Stars. Kennedy-Harris, 20, originally from Endeavour Hills, was part of the select squad picked to represent the Indigenous All-Stars against West Coast in Perth this week. He traded in his red-and-blue Melbourne jumper for the night as he donned the heritage jumper in the 26man final team. Striding proudly onto Leederville Oval, in front of 10,000 fans, the AllStars were gallant even with a few high calibre names - Lance Franklin, Cyril Rioli, Patrick Ryder and Adam Goodes among others - missing from the side. West Coast was behind by 10 at the main break, but was able to smash through the Indigenous All Stars’ defence to claim the seven-point nail-biting victory as Kennedy-Harris’ brigade lost 5.11 (41) to 7.7 (49). Burgoyne - a three-time premiership player with Port Adelaide and Hawthorn - added another accolade to his trophy cabinet as the Hawthorn midfielder was awarded the Polly Farmer Medal as the best player on the ground. Former Dandenong Stingray Tom Lamb impressed in his first outing for West Coast, slotting a late goal to push the Eagles ahead in the fourth term.

All abilities well displayed at carnival By JARROD POTTER
Cutting his way to the boundary, Casey-South Melbourne opener Josh Holden helped the Picture: JARROD POTTER Swans see off the new ball. 134953
Swans blowin’ in the wind By JARROD POTTER VICTORIAN PREMIER CRICKET - Round 17 (day 1) RUNS on the board never hurt at the gale-force home of wind (Casey Fields) with CaseySouth Melbourne (209) leaving a middle-range chase for St Kilda (0/31). Anchored at the top by Victorian Bushranger and baggy green holder Matt Wade (60), the Swans built off the international keeper’s early work. Alongside Wade was Casey’s young spinning allrounder Lachie Sperling (23), adding Devin Pollock (19) and a rear-guard knock from skipper Chris Hall (37) kept one of Casey Fields 4’s countless scoreboards ticking along. The problem all along was an opposing international young spinner James Muirhead (6/83). Muirhead - who earned his cap as a Twenty20 interna-
tional player last year - spun through all and sundry around Casey Fields. He gave no inch as he picked up scalps from top to bottom across the Casey contingent from his 22 overs. It would leave Casey short of stumps - despite a gutsy knock from tailender Leigh Diston (11 not out) off 46 balls as St Kilda captain Rob Quiney (21 not out) helped tick off 31 of the required tally by the close of the day. NORTHCOTE v DANDENONG MOMENTUM heading into the off-season is never a terrible thing as Dandenong (238) looked to excise some demons from a lacklustre year on turf. Tom Donnell (99) led the charge as he knocked in a 50run stand with Brett Forsyth (7) and 99 in tandem with Peter Sweeney (36) - the latter coming off a dogged unbeaten halfcentury the week before. Donnell had the home side
running to all parts of Bill Lawry Oval en route to his fourth 50-plus score of 2014/15. He was cruelly denied a third century this season as Matt Short (4/60) cleaned him up one shy of the milestone. From there Dandenong collapsed - losing 6/44 as the Panthers were flung back to the dressing rooms instantly. Captain Dan Doran (38) notched his best score of the season to keep the Panthers at the crease while wickets fell around him though. He would be the last man out - one of Josh Sundberg’s (3/28) three lower order wickets - as the visitors came unstuck in the dying overs of the day. James Wilcock (1/6) made the important breakthrough before stumps as he sent Lindsay Hassett (0) back to the sheds with an LBW decision to his name.
EAGLES of all abilities took to Casey Fields with gusto on Sunday as part of Cricket Victoria’s All Abilities Carnival. Bringing together sides from across Victoria - over 20 in this year’s carnival - the program ran all Sunday as fours, sixes and wickets dotted the scoresheets. With help from the City of Casey, The Lord’s Taverners Victoria, Casey-South Melbourne Cricket Club and Cranbourne Cricket Club, the All Abilities Carnival approaching its10-year anniversary -brought together athletes with an intellectual disability to play their beloved game with gusto. Cranbourne’s All Abilities Cricket team battled it out across the afternoon to the delight of players and fans alike. A squad of 22 was selected following the carnival to represent the Victorian Vikings in the national all-abilities competition. Endeavour Hills Cricket Club bowler Lachlan Macrae was part of the action on Sunday at Casey Fields as he prepares for the INAS International Cricket Series against South Africa and England.

Comets rise to occasion By RUSSELL BENNETT THE Casey Comets will again take part this year at the highest level of club soccer in the Women’s Premier League, and will again be the only team in the area providing the opportunity for girls and women to compete at such a high standard. Players come from all over Victoria to wear the Comets playing strip - travelling huge distances to train three nights per week and play competitive matches on weekends. The club will implement at Women’s Premier League (WPL) pathway program for this season, which falls under the guidance of head coach Ian Williamson. The Comets offer girls of all ages, from nine upwards, the opportunity to play competitive soccer. They will be entering a girls’ team specifically for younger players, and also junior teams in the under-14s, under-
16s and under-18s - leading into the Premier League side. Soccer is going through a huge transformation in Australia and is experiencing massive growth, with more young people than before taking up the sport. With the success of the Socceroos in the Asian Cup, and the A-League getting stronger by the year, clubs around the country have had to adapt, and this year the Casey Comets have started training early and
extended their season with extra training across all ages. In addition to the Comets having the only WPL side in the area, the club also competes in the men’s State League 1 and has experienced a 30 per cent increase in membership this year, which will continue to grow. The club’s playing facilities have also recently increased to five pitches to reflect the rise in participation. The Casey Comets are celebrating their 40th anniversary this year and the club will hold a number of events throughout the season. The Comets are always on the lookout for sponsors to come on board to help support their players. For more information, visit www.caseycomets. com.au. The club is always welcoming new players on board. Anyone who would like to get involved should send an email to dawnstone@caseycomets. com.au.

Four into one… won’t go By JARROD POTTER DDCA Turf 1 - Round 10 (day 2) FOUR spots, seven teams, and only one day of cricket left to decide their fate. Therein lies the possibilities of an enthralling upcoming DDCA home-and-away finale as Heinz South Districts, Hallam Kalora Park, North Dandenong and Berwick remain in the hunt for the last place in the Turf 1 finals. CRANBOURNE v SPRINGVALE SOUTH Taking their time to etch out their most emphatic win this season, Springvale South (4/168) held off Cranbourne (146) and kept the Eagles’ bowling attack at bay in a sensational finals’ series preview. Steve Masterson (58) stayed the course and occupied the crease. Drip by drip the Bloods’ opener knocked in crucial runs and most importantly, tired out the Eagles’ bowlers on a stinking hot day in the field. Steve Spoljaric (1/22) rattled off 20 overs in the heat - including 10 maidens - but could not break the all-important partnership between Masterson and Jackson Sketcher (44 not out). Sketcher also played a dab hand and saw off his own fair
share of overs. Between them, Masterson and Sketcher faced the equivalent of 57 overs to demoralise Cranbourne and stop any chance of an Eagles’ fight back emerging. Masterson finally succumbed once the job was done - striking it straight to Brayden Roscoe - and leaving the heavy lifting to Sketcher and Co. down the order. Both sides have secured home finals with the result and the only thing left to fight for are bragging rights and the minor premiership as Cranbourne heads to Berwick while Springvale South hosts North Dandenong. NORTH DANDENONG v HEINZ SOUTHERN DISTRICTS A huge chase just wasn’t on the cards for North Dandenong (200), as it struggled to catch up to Heinz Southern Districts (5/227), which kept its season alive with victory. Matt Cox (87) continued a stellar year with the blade as he flayed the Northern attack to all points of Lois Twohig Reserve. Despite notching a gutsy century in response, Clay McCartney (109) had very little support from his team mates. Chad Van Estrop (5/31) surged through the North’s order to

take his first five-wicket haul this season. Moving up to fourth in the chase for finals, a win for the Cobras against Parkfield shuts the door on Berwick, North Dandenong and Hallam Kalora Park barring unlikely circumstance. If they lose, their fate is in the hands of their opponents. On equal points in sixth spot, North Dandenong needs Heinz and Hallam Kalora Park to lose or for a whopping percentage boosting win against Springvale South if either the Cobras or Hawks manage to get up as well. COOMOORA v BERWICK ONLY one round remains in Coomoora’s (193 and 0/37) latest Turf 1 stint as the Kangaroos failed to stop Berwick’s (7/249dec) charge. Seeing off a scorching spell from Saliya Saman (1/42), Ber-
As does James' opening partner Adam Watson - Saman's spell produced nothing but haymakers. 134954 Pictures: JARROD POTTER wick made the best of the hot weather to pile on the runs. Dan Brown (47) and Ryan Williamson (32) got their eyes in and relished the conditions before Ryan Crawford (78 not out) was given free rein to belt the stuffing from the ball. His half-ton set up a chance at outright as Berwick sent the Kangaroos back in for a 12-over barrage. Berwick couldn’t raze the Coomoora opening partnership, which finished off the day, leaving one last battle in Turf 1 as it faces Mordialloc.
Facing ladder leaders Cranbourne in the last round, Berwick needs to pick up the points and also get results to fall their way quite dramatically. To qualify, Berwick needs Hallam to fall against Buckley Ridges, North Dandenong to lose to Springvale South and Heinz Southern Districts to fail facing Parkfield. HALLAM KALORA PARK v MORDIALLOC It was the worst possible time to concede a loss to Mordialloc (168) and Hallam Kalora Park (79) didn’t do its percent-
age any favours in the thumping defeat. Rescheduled as a one-dayer - after last week’s deluge - Hallam started brilliantly to whittle down the Bloodhounds to 6/88 as all the major Hawks wickettakers sunk their talons in. Jordan Hammond (3/13) stormed through power-pair Ian Daniel (38) and Damith Mapa Ralalage (0) to leave the visitors reeling before a gutsy revival. Captain Monto Perera (40) and Chathura Athukorala (24) stabilised the innings with a 62run stand to give Mordialloc a respectable tally to defend. It turns out Mordialloc had more than enough though as Hallam collapsed spectacularly. Rhys Serpanchy (21) and Jagveer Hayer (17) had the chase in the bag before the pair succumbed back-to-back under the three-pronged pressure of Athukorala (3/9), Stuart Squires (3/20) and Perera (3/20). From 1/39, the tail started high and failed to wag as the Hawks lost the next nine wickets for 39. It leaves Hallam Kalora Park in the four-way scrum for the last finals’ spot. It will need to win this week against Buckley Ridges and hope for losses from at least Heinz Southern Districts to secure a place.
Cracker win for Cobras - into Premier tier By RUSSELL BENNETT WEST GIPPSLAND CRICKET ASSOCIATION REVIEW - ROUND 13 (DAY 2) MERINDA PARK clinched its first win over Tooradin on Saturday since winning its way into the Premier tier and man of the moment Jamie Smith played a huge role in the home side’s victory. The Merinda Park player-coach strode to the crease as a nightwatchman late on day one, but as Cobras captain Danny Diwell said in these pages in our last edition: “He can definitely hold a bat in his own right - he’s no mug. He’s made plenty of runs in the MPCA and he really deserves some runs.” Resuming at 1/15 at Donnelly Reserve on Saturday, chasing Tooradin’s modest 166, Smith (59) and opener Daniel McCalman (78) put on a 129-run stand to essentially guide their team to victory. But from 2/141, the Cobras lost another four wickets before eventually wrapping the contest up at 6/170. There’s clearly still plenty left to work on with willow in hand, but McCalman - Merinda Park’s best batsman this season - said the result proved the side could beat any opponent on its day. “We know we have what it takes now,” he said. “The conditions were tough out there (on Saturday) - it was pretty hot - but the longer we stayed out there the easier it became. “Twig (Smith) and I wanted to get through the first five or 10 overs to start with but we really had to dig in against Hammer (Steve Hamill) and Azz (Aaron Avery) as long as we could. “It was tough work out there for the bowlers, too, and I thought they bowled well.” McCalman said his side was wary of falling into the trap of
getting too defensive in chasing a smaller total. “Against Upper Beac we were chasing 90 and we were all out for 70-odd,” he said. “You have to be positive - no matter what the total you’re chasing is.” After starting off the season well from a personal perspective, McCalman went through a rough patch of form either side of Christmas and he’s hoping Saturday’s innings has him back on track. “I just try to keep it simple and play straight,” he said. Hamill finished with 3/50 from 18 overs; while importantly for the Gulls, Avery - who has battled injuries throughout the season - opened the bowling and got through 20 overs to finish with 2/50. While the likes of McCalman and Kooweerup skipper Michael Giles look to have struck some form right at the business end of the season, one of the league’s most dangerous hitters notched his first half-century since a Twenty20 Kookaburra Cup clash in November. Cardinia player-coach Simon Parrott (64 not out) put on an undefeated 129-run stand with Alex Nooy (also 64 not out) to steer their side to a strong 3/195 in 40 overs from their rain-shortened match against Beaconsfield at Holm Park Road. In the other Premier results of the round, Pakenham (8/206) - led by a stunning 7/17 from gun all-rounder Russell Lehman - proved far too much for Upper Beaconsfield (107) to handle; and Kooweerup (9/260) defeated Emerald (187) off the back of strong batting performances from Matt Bright (96) and Matt Davey (80). In District division, Cranbourne Meadows (8/311) defeated Lyndhurst (299) in a high-scoring battle;
Panthers batsman Steve Robinson scored a sparkling 75 to help guide his side to victory over Pakenham Upper-Toomuc. 134913 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS Devon Meadows (6/173) upset Pakenham Upper-Toomuc (155); Officer (8/182) defeated St Francis

Top division drops the ball in a disaster NARRE WARREN BOWLS THE Saturday Division 2 pennant team was away to Pakenham in round 18 and - after a day the club would rather put behind them - had a disastrous day for a side in the four. Division 7 played on the treacherous Ferntree Gully carpet and handled the green without any problems, proving why they have been on top of the ladder for most of the season - with all rinks up - and running out winners by 51 shots 113/62. A great lead-up to a home final next week against Pakenham. The side has worked hard this season and one more win will be the icing on the cake. Janice Moran, Ethel VanMaanen, Micki Horton 25/13. It has been a tough season for the number four side with changes every week but the guys have been valiant in their endeavours, and what they may have lacked in skill they more than made up with their enthusiasm. Thanks to all the members that played in the side over the year for their commitment to the club. Margo Worsley, Leo McGeary, Jack Norman, Andy Tobler 28/10. Darren Moore, Rudi Pompe, Peter Rouse, Peter Pater 23/14. In round 18 of Tuesday pennant, Division 1 finished the season with a good win over Cranbourne at home by 18 shots, 61/43. It’s relegation time in day of reckoning CRANBOURNE BOWLS AFTER two tough years of avoiding relegation from Division 1 Metropolitan, the day of reckoning has arrived for Cranbourne Bowls club. Cranbourne will now regroup, rebuild and look to the future to get back into Division 1. With a bit of hard work and determination the side will hopefully fight its way back to Division 1 after a good solid showing in Division 2 next year. The Division 2 side lost and has been relegated to Division 3 for next season. However the Division 3 side had a great win against second side, Noble Park and will remain in Division 3
next year. The Division 4 side also had a loss and is relegated to Division 5 next year. The Division 7 side finished third and will play in finals next week. MIDWEEK The midweek ladies’ Division 1 side finished the season on top of the ladder and will play finals this week at home joined by the open-four side that will play away. The side was not disgraced. Despite all rinks losing by the margin of 14 shots, it was not a disaster as the side fought it out after being well down at the lunch break. The side had a good season finishing fourth and will play Mulgrave in a knockout semi-final next Tuesday at Mulgrave. Arthur Fitt, Janice Moran, Ethel VanMaanen, Micki Horton 15/20. CRANBOURNE RSL BOWLS THERE was no talk from Cranbourne RSL Division 2 before the game on the consequences of losing Saturday’s tournament. Everyone knew what they had to do… win. And in the twinkling of an eye the RSL opened up a big lead and never surrendered that lead all day. Everyone bowled well under extreme pressure of knowing a loss would see them relegated to Division 3. The final result was a crushing 42-shot win. The victory song at the end of the game was sung with passion and pride for a club which once again proved the doubters wrong. Results: Cranbourne RSL 103 (R. Bligh/R. Crawford/J. Spencer/M. HAMPTON PARK BOWLS IT’S the business end of the bowling season - finals time. Three Hampton Park teams will be involved, the midweek Division 1 along with the Saturday Division 2 and Division 4 teams. With all three teams finishing either first or second on their ladders, all will have home finals on the first day. Hampton Park’s Division 1 midweek team had two victories this week, firstly beating Vermont South, and secondly after Mulgrave CC beat second placed Clayton setting up a home final. At Vermont South, Jim Westwell, Shane Collins, Peter Hayden and Neville Hendrie led from the front all day and won 25-10. Geoff Ampt, Ann Westwell, Helen Lambert and Denise Eastick also led all day to win 21-15. While Geoff Ladner, Chris Hendrie, Andrew Brandolin and Ellen Smith dropped a shot on the last bowl of the day to lose 18-19. Result: Hampton Park (1) 14-64 d Vermont South (3) 2-44. Division 2 at home suffered another loss and will be relegated to Division 3 next season. At home against Berwick, Brian Diaper, Dot Carr, Gwen Clough and Bob Nicol won 23-19, while Heather Naismith, June Damon, Keith Damon and Rob Woff lost 11-24 and Rhonda Diaper, Jen Sherry, Marion Battaglia and Ray Wood were narrowly beaten 18-20.
