Leaders back event

Festival ‘a boon for city’ The city’s tourism boss, Roger Grant, said Motor City filled a gap in Geelong’s events calendar. “It’s remarkable considering the diversity and size of events in Geelong that we didn’t previously have a dedicated music festival,” Mr Grant said. “This is a significant opportunity for Geelong. Not only does it connect with our motor industry roots but it demonstrates that Geelong’s reinventing itself.” Mr Grant said the festival offered a wonderful opportunity for locals to enjoy a safe environment with great entertainment at an affordable price. “I’m excited about the event and I urge people to invite friends and relatives down and make the most of it. “Geelong people have lamented before that there was nothing to do on the Labour Day long weekend and the Motor City Music Festival has delivered in spades, so let’s support it. “It’s a great venue at the Geelong Showgrounds the way it’s laid out, there’s freedom to move around and it creates a great vibe. “Plus, it’s a celebration of local great food, wine, beers and ciders.”

GEELONG has been a quiet achiever in producing musical talent but Motor City Music Festival will put the region’s best on centre stage. Along with local acts, the return of Motor City Music Festival has attracted a host of Australian music legends. Mayor Darryn Lyons said he was stoked to have Geelong’s biggest celebration of blues and rock back again in 2015. “With a line-up of more than 50 bands performing across five stages over the Labour Day weekend, Motor City Music Festival is fast becoming a favourite music event in Geelong,” the mayor said. “Geelong has had a huge year of events with the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race, the 2015 Australian International Airshow and the Oates Victorian Open Golf Championships to name a few. “Major events contribute $57 million to the Geelong economy and events support 455 jobs annually. “As mayor I love having big events like this return to Geelong and welcome more attractions to the city. Enjoy.”

A celebration of city, music GEELONG rocks again this year on the March Labour Day Long weekend. Motor City Music Festival is about celebrating Geelong’s past and present with a great sound track and something for everyone. Featuring over 50 acts on five stages, one under cover, Motor City Music Festival is the best reason to stay home over the long weekend to celebrate the great city-by-the-bay. Over 18s can head to Geelong Showgrounds on the Friday night of the festival to get down to rock and roots. Then on Saturday patrons will be blown away by 12 hours of the best in Australian blues and tribute acts. Then they can bring their families back for Funday Sunday, celebrating the best in Australian contemporary music and including a stellar line-up of free children’s entertainment featuring Dazzling Dan, Pevan and Sarah, The Funky Mummies, Unstrung Puppets and more. The best part for families is that children with an accompanying adult are admitted free of charge on Funday Sunday. For the first time in 2015, Motor City Music Festival will proudly present a line-up of some of the biggest acts in contemporary Australian country music. One of the acts, McAlister Kemp, has just announced that from March 2015 it will take an indefinite break, with the festival organisers humbled to host the duo’s final show for the foreseeable future. Free carnival rides will operate all weekend, while parking will also be available without charge. Other highlights include: a free vintage vehicle and tractor display; the return of the famous food trucks; the return of the now-legendary Motor City Music Festival mojito; a cider and craft beer hall; wine bars; an air guitar competition; and a Totem Tennis Open! The weekend will culminate with Geelong Fireworks’ finest Motor City Music Festival display. How will the 2015 festival rival the first? Only punters attending will find out. More information is available at motorcitymusicfestival.com.au.

Tribute to rock gods IF IMITATION is the most sincere form of flattery, then Motor City Music Festival’s Tribute Day will be a living homage to some of the greatest names in rock. The Saturday of the three-day festival will feature some of Australia’s greatest tribute acts, playing all their hits almost note-perfect. Featuring a variety of musical styles and eras, the Southern Cross stage will again be transformed into the base for the festival’s tribute bands. Big hits from the 2014 Festival – Appetite for Destruction – the Guns and Roses Tribute Show and Barwon Heads locals Shed Zeppelin – will return in 2015 to the Southern Cross Stage.

Other tribute acts set to appear include: Walk the Line – Cash Carter Tribute Show; Rhiannon – A Tribute to Fleetwood Mac; Credence Clearwater Recycled; To Hell and Back – Australia’s Tribute to Meatloaf; and headliners INXSIVE – the INXS Tribute Show. Anyone who’s new to the music festival scene and wants to check out what everyone else is talking about should attend Motor City’s Tribute Day as a great place to start a love affair with the world’s greatest rock. More information and bookings are available at motorcitymusicfestival.com.au.

Community connected MOTOR City Music Festival is all about supporting locals – from using Geelong suppliers to contractors and community clubs. Motor City is all about giving back to those who help the event. One of its supporters returning for 2015 is Geelong Connected Communities, a community company that benefits all Geelong. With Geelong Connected Communities’ help, Motor City Music Festival is able to present the Live & Local and children’s entertainment stages. The Live&Local line-up for 2015 is impressive: The Tiny Giants; Flawed Peace; Famous Will; Revolu-

tion; Underground; Brooklyn Blue; Grasshopper; Tex Miller; Jack Wright; and Cooper Lower. The children’s stage will feature: Pevan and Sarah; Dazzling Dan the Magic Man; The Funky Mummies; Willow Star; and Unstrung Puppets’ Andy Magee and Mitchell. Other children’s entertainment will include a colouring-in competition and a chance to be a part of history as the festival attempts a world record of the most amount of people playing totem tennis at once. Thanks to the generosity of Geelong Connected Communities, children will have an awesome festival experience to remember.

Hugo T Armstrong rocks on at last year’s Motor City Music Festival with Cherry Martini and Jimmy Hocking.

Blues a focus of Motor City MOTOR City Music Festival director Hugo T Armstrong is no stranger to the world of events. A past director of Queenscliff Music Festival, from 1998 to 2004, Hugo is also the proprietor of Queenscliff’s legendary Blues Train. After beginning as a celebration of the 20th anniversary of The Blues Train, Motor City Music Festival will again present a strong line-up of blues acts this year. Some of Australia’s best blues artists and bands will play at the festival. Big names to watch out for include: Joe Camilleri and The Black Sorrows; Broderick Smith; Chris Wilson; Jimi Hocking; Geoff Achison; Lloyd Spiegel; John McNamara and Wayne Jury with Claude Hay; Brian Fraser; Phil Para, Chubby Rae and the Elevators, Sweet Felicia and the Honeytones; Blues Mountain; Pugsley Buzzard; Sammy Owen Blues Band; Safari Motel; Cass Eager and the Velvet Rope; Spoonful; The Detonators; and Gwyn Ashton, from the UK as the only international act on the bill. These stars of the blues will feature over each of the festival’s three days on the March long weekend. Hugo says the event will also include “some cross-pollination of some acts”. “Chris Wilson and Geoff Achison will perform a session together, Wayne Jury and Brian Fraser will do the same before Brian jumps up on stage with his electric guitar to join the Wayne Jury 4, and the nowannual Australian Blues Guitar jam will see Lloyd Spiegel, Geoff Achison, Gwyn Ashton and Jesse Valach join Jimi Hocking’s Blues Machine to jam it out in the ultimate blues shootout. “I’m pumped to be able to work with the best in the business and bring to the festival the spirit of The Blues Train, which is, of course, in itself a minifestival.” With a line-up that combines legends of Australian blues with a great mix of up-and-comers, the Motor City Music Festival weekend is the place to be for lovers of Australian blues. Tickets and the full festival line-up are available at motorcitymusicfestival.com.au.

Sweet Felicia and the Honeytones plays the inaugural Motor City Music Festival last year.

Festival’s Sunday a ‘Funday’ THE adults can’t have all the fun, so Motor City Music Festival has created Funday Sunday. The last day of the event has all the fun of a traditional fair as well as the elements adults will have loved so far. Parents can bring their kids to experience music in the flesh - and not via a device for a change. It’s a great opportunity to create musical memories by introducing children to the best in Australian music at Geelong Showgrounds. Vika and Linda Bull, Jason Singh, Mick Thomas and the Roving Commission are just some of the acts appearing live for families’ listening pleasure on Funday Sunday. Anyone who loves country music should make the showgrounds’ Hall of Agriculture their base for the day to enjoy acts like McAlister Kemp, Travis Collins, Amber Lawrence, James Blundell, Christie Lamb, Kaylens Rain, and Doug Bruce and the Tailgaters. Children will also have a stage all to themselves. They’ll be able to spin and fly with Pevan and Sarah, marvel as Andy Magee turns balloons into any creature they so desire, be dazzled

Free to download, the app lists the complete three-day line-up. Users can bookmark what they want to see and plan they schedule ahead of time to be ahead of the pack after arriving. The app features: a full listing of all artists and a handy program guide; a list of all attractions throughout the three days, including tractor and vintage vehicle displays, carnival rides, and the now-famous Motor City Music Festival fireworks display; and, for the first time, a lighter. Motor City keeping it local KEEPING it local and keeping it real – that’s the Geelong-driven philosophy behind Motor City Music Festival. Director Hugo T Armstrong says he’s gone all out to ensure Geelong and Surf Coast suppliers are utilised and local themes maintained to help imbue the festival with a distinctive local theme. “There’s quite a lot of events where significant amount of money goes back up the highway the day after – I’m trying to make sure as much money stays in Geelong as possible,” Hugo says. “Priority’s been given everywhere

we can to local suppliers. The coffee beans are roasted in Geelong, the beer’s Geelong brewed, we have Geelong vintage machinery on display, the Geelong Motoring Museum will have cars there. “We’ll have local food trucks, really great vegan food, an LA street food truck. We’ve tried everywhere to source things locally, right down to ice cream from down at Eastern Beach. “We’ve got the rights to use the HyLite Park name from the Verfuth family for all our free family carnival rides. “The festival’s guitar logo includes a motor engine, International Harvester

and the biggest windmill in the Southern Hemisphere, which is actually on site at the showgrounds – donated and restored by the McCann family of Geelong Cement fame. “I’ve tried to source everything, right through to the toilet hire, from Geelong and the Surf Coast wherever possible.” The festival is also focussing strongly on local bands, with local performers ranging from nostalgic favourites such as Grasshopper from the 1960s and ‘70s to a swag of new young bands. The Tiny Giants, The Stackshots,

Famous Will, Revolution, Grasshopper, Brooklyn Blue, Underground, Flawed Peace, Cooper Lower, Fenn Wilson, Jack Wright, Luke Biscan and Tex Miller are all confirmed for the festival. “The Live and Local line-up is a perfect mix of the best talent in Geelong, the Bellarine, Surf Coast and beyond,” says Armstrong. “With a great Geelong musical heritage that stretches from Grasshopper through to Brooklyn Blue, The Tiny Giants and Fenn Wilson, we continue to celebrate what is great about our city by the bay.”

Chris Longmore, Hugo T Armstrong, Roger Grant and Ron Nelson jam on the festival’s logo.

Joe keeps rockin’ on By NOEL MURPHY

Event running on volunteers EVERYONE knows that volunteers are the unsung heroes of many events. They help make things happen. They freely give of their time, energy and considerable skills. In fact, volunteers are the crucial difference in making a good event great. And volunteers ensure that Geelong’s own Motor City Music Festival operates like a well-oiled machine says the event’s Hugo T Armstrong. “We do what we do because of the support of a committed band of volunteers who work to ensure that Geelong’s own music festival becomes a mustdo event. “There’s such a broad range of skills that our volunteers bring to the table - and these skills are needed to bring you an event that we will all be proud to share with the world. “What we offer volunteers above and beyond any tangible benefits is our undying appreciation in helping to contributing to an event that we are proud to call Geelong.”

Joe Camilleri amid his Black Sorrows bandmates. 1970s, ‘80s and ‘90s to the present. The hits are familiar, of course – Shape I’m In, Hold on to Me, Harley and Rose, Chained to the Wheel, Never Let Me Go, Hit and Run and more. Camilleri’s ever grateful for their success but suggests some were only ever half-written, but clearly best alone, and doubts he could write some of his hits if he had to set his mind to doing so. “You take them when they come your way,” he says. “That’s the difference between

continuing to write a lot of songs and being true to the thing you love instead of chasing something you’ll never catch. “I couldn’t write Hit and Run again if I tried...and it was only a half-written song but it was a really big thing for me. When I look at it, it’s not finished. Shape I’m In wasn’t finished. They were just moments – you try to do that and it’ll just fall over, it’s got to be a natural progression. “I wrote Shape I’m In pushing my now-36-year-old daughter around

South Melbourne. I remember singing it and thinking, ‘This is a good thing, I have to get home and put it down somewhere’.” It’s a neat philosophy and practical approach that’s serve Camilleri well. But you still have to wonder if there’s not something else going on. And maybe there is. At 67 years of age, Camilleri’s ebullient, energetic and a happy dad of five kids – including a three-year-old. If that’s not going to help keep someone young, nothing will.

Volunteers like Sally Riddle and Paula Benetto are the backbone of Motor City Music Festival.

1174313-CB9-15

MOTOR City Music Festival headliner Joe Camilleri has been chained to the rock industry wheel longer than he cares to remember but, like a certain paint brand, he just keeps on keeping on. In a game as tough as music, that’s a serious achievement but Camilleri’s strength is perhaps his great love for the uncertainty of music and his ability to morph, chameleon-like, into any of many genres. It’s a happy knack born from his early days learning saxophone in the early 1960s. Music recordings were hard to come by and he devoured overseas vinyls he found in bargain bins at Coles department stores of the day. He incorporated the licks and riffs into early bands he played with but soon learned much of the music he’d been learning was being slotted into all kinds of R&B, soul, reggae, country, blues and other grooves. The music of American jazz alto saxophonist Eric Dolphy Junior changed Camilleri’s life, opening his eyes to all kinds of possibilities. The fact Melbourne’s inner-suburban Carlton hosted virtually no sax players worked to his advantage, too, he laughs today, five decades later. While the hippies of the day were soaking up the acid rock of Hendrix, Camilleri was revelling into the blues of Paul Butterfield, finessing old jazz solos from the 1950s, soaking up Elmore James, John Coltrane, Hank Williams and Captain Beefheart. The results of this musical upbringing of a kid from industrial seaside Altona now read like a soundtrack of Australia through the

Brittany’s in the swim at pools again By NOEL MURPHY BRITTANY Nunan’s been out of the limelight while studying and travelling but she’s getting back in the swim of things. The former state and national competitor is putting Geelong’s web-footed fraternity through its paces at Kardinia Pool and Norlane Waterworld. A recent degree graduate in health and exercise, the 23-year-old from Newtown is coaching Geelong City Aquatic swim club and working hard to spread the word about the benefits of swimming. “We’re doing swimming for people for fitness, we’re doing competitive level swimming for country, state and national levels, and soon we’ll be running masters classes, Brittany said. “We want to grab those people interested in open-water swimming, too. “Swimming can be very good for students, too, especially, say, year 12s looking for a good option to keep up their strength. Brittany said the days of long hours clocking up laps had ceded way to more-sophisticated training techniques. “It’s more about quality rather than quantity – it doesn’t have to be so time-consuming.

Trawler jobs haul By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A CONTROVERSIAL 95-metre floating fishing factory will bring jobs and investment when it makes Geelong port its home base later this year. But the the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) has opposed the plan. New owner Seafish Tasmania expects the Geelong Star to arrive in Corio Bay from the Northern Hemisphere “with-

MUA against controversial ship in two months. The trawler has courted controversy because it replaces Seafish Tasmania’s earlier attempt to bring out a 142m “super trawler, which the Federal Government has banned. MUA state secretary Kevin Bracken said the union opposed the Geelong Star “due to the extensive environmental damage

it would cause. “We should be ensuring that southern Victoria’s fish stocks and marine life are managed in a way that means they’re sustainable in the long term. Small Pelagic Fishery Industry Association (SPFIA) chairman Grahame Turk said the ship would create jobs in Geelong.

“Seafish Tasmania’s investment in this fishery will create many skilled and unskilled jobs for Australians on board the vessel and on land to support the vessel and to transport and market the catch, he said. “Geelong stands out as a great port to base the boat. It has good unloading facilities for frozen product, good transport

links and an available workforce. “It’s a good place to house a crew because it has all the facilities a crew could want. Plus, it’s central to the fishery. “This is a new industry not just for Geelong but for Australia. It will create export income as well. Mr Turk said the ship would also create up to a dozen more shore-based jobs involved in provisioning and transport. Continued page 5

The Lions of Geelong Hamlyn Heights would like to thank all the businesses, professionals, tradespeople and private individuals who so kindly sponsored the WONDERFUL WORLD OF MAGIC SHOW! Their generous donations helped in a twofold manner; firstly by allowing special children, carers and Primary school children the opportunity to see a wonderful show free of charge, and secondly (after costs to run the show) it allows the Lions Club to make substantial donations to worthy charities and causes each year. Over the course of 20 plus years we have been able to put back over $400,000 into Geelong and the surrounding areas. We look forward to your continuing support later this year. THANK YOU ALL ONCE AGAIN! Lion Ivan Panton, Show Coordinator On behalf of the Lions Club of Geelong Hamlyn Heights

Double Take

A GROUP of Bannockburn golfing ladies had an unusual insight into longevity during a Melbourne sojourn last week. Riding a tram in the city, they struck up a conversation with a tiny fellow passenger. Turns out the little dear was about to turn 104. What was her secret to long life, the impressed Bannockburn women enquired. “I’ve only ever had one man,” she answered. Fair enough. Multiple relationships can be a strain, after all. So where was she going? “To the casino for chicken and champagne,” she replied. At least she left the ladies with something to look forward to. A “TRADE MISSION” will send Committee for Geelong chief Rebecca Casson to Las Vegas with chairman Dan Simmons and software-guru member Nick Stanley. While in town they’ll attend “the world’s leading entrepreneurial conference”, Collision, from 5 to 6 May, according to the committee. Maybe they should broaden their itinerary - Sin City’s also hosting a National Hardware Show on the same dates.

That way they could really get to the nuts and bolts of entrepreneurship. LAS VEGAS isn’t the only destination on the committee’s must-see list. The committee also plans to “cultivate its contacts in Washington”, whoever that might be. And it will “reaffirm its historical link” with Norfolk, Virginia, too. Given the committee’s only 14 years old, it’s probably a “historical link” in need of a little reaffirming. SOMEONE is getting ripped off. Maximum parking fees on either side of Western Beach Rd do not compute. The all-day cost on the north side is $6 but the fee for four hours on the south is $5.50. That means some motorists get an extra four hours parking for just 50 cents more. Now we know that businesses will often offer discounts or even loss-leaders to entice custom but City of Greater Geelong is not a business and by law it must provide fair and transparent pricing. Either drivers paying the four-hour fees are being ripped off or the all-day parkers are getting an (almost) free ride.

Champion goalkicker Doug Wade ill in Asia

In brief

Stroke hits Cat legend

Crash arrest

By NOEL MURPHY

STROKE: Doug Wade at a Cats game under lights in Geelong last year. - second only at the time to Collingwood great Gordon Coventry. Wade kicked 834 goals with Geelong and 223 with North. Only three players have since kicked over 1000 goals: Tony Lockett,

Wade is father to three and grandfather to six. He lives on a 40-hectare property and is a regular golfer at Curlewis, Point Lonsdale and Barwon Heads, playing off 13. While Wade’s career is replete with highlights, a 1970 on-field episode he was involved in remains one of the game’s most bizarre. Early in the final quarter of an August match against South Melbourne, Wade lined up for goal 30 yards out and 15 from the boundary. His kick was critical to Geelong’s flag prospects - moreover, if the Cats didn’t win it would be the first time in eight years they failed to reach the finals berth. But as Wade moved in to kick, an apple came sailing through the air, thrown from the crowd. It hit the ball squarely, deflecting it off Wade’s boot. South’s John Rantall seized the ball and hared off goalward. Geelong lost by seven points.

RESCUING three swimmers in trouble at Urquhart Bluff has earned four surf coaches bravery awards. Surfing Victoria and Play it Safe by the Water officials presented the Everyday Lifesaver awards this week to Great Ocean Road Surf Tour’s Adam Strickland, James Majer, Josh Eades and Matthew Boyle.

Fire suspects POLICE want information about two vehicles seen near a suspicious fire at Ocean Grove Nature Reserve on the weekend. Police said the dark four-wheel-drive and white sedan were near the reserve’s Grubb Rd entry on Saturday morning around the time a fire broke out separate to a planned burn in another part of the reserve.

TIP-OFFS have led police to a man who was on the run in northern Geelong with eight warrants for his arrest. Police said the information from the public helped them find Andrew Murray, 34, at a residential address in Norlane earlier this week.

THE NEWEST addition to Geelong’s strong triathlon tradition is already making waves in the popular Gatorade Triathlon Series. The Geelong Performance Coaching team is second in the Gatorade Triathlon Series, with race four of the five races at Portarlington on 15 March GPC has accumulated 133 points, 10 behind series leader Melbourne Triathlon Club. The Portarlington race is the longest-running triathlon in Victoria on one of the most scenic courses in Australia. GPC coach Stephane Vander Bruggen hoped the team could capitalise on home-ground advantage. The team’s achievement confirmed Geelong’s status as a national triathlon force, he said. “We’re a new squad, we only started in November, so to be already ranked second in Victoria is beyond our expectations,” Vander Bruggen said. “We hope to close the gap in Portarlington because it gives us a good chance to score some points and win the Gatorade series club competition.” A Belgian, Vander Bruggen was previously a professional triathlete and used Geelong as a training base for two months every year. After meeting his wife in Geelong, he has been based locally for 12 years, adding coaching to his resume. “We wanted to make the new squad more about the athletes, offering them more local support, helping them get to world championship races, doing some fundraising. “The response has been so great we have had to put on two new coaches already.” Some of Australia’s top triathletes, including Marcel Walkington, Mitch Kibby, Ellie Salthouse and Grace Deveson, will compete at Portarlington. Organisers expect between 1500 and 1700 competitors to enter either the Gatorade triathlon, with an 800m swim, 26km cycle and 8km run, or an Active Feet competition comprising a 300m swim, 10km cycle and 3km run. The organisers said registers were open at supersprint.com.au/gatorade.html.

GEELONG Cats legend Doug Wade has suffered a stroke overseas. Details were sketchy on the condition of the 73-year-old yesterday after his health scare in Asia. Sources said they believed Wade was not in danger but were surprised and shocked to hear of his stroke. “He’s had a bit of a flutter but we believe he’s all right,” one source told the Independent. Wade’s family did not return the Independent’s calls. Cats chief Brian Cook said he understood Wade suffered a stroke more than fortnight ago and had been waiting on a medical sign-off before flying home. Wade, who lives at Drysdale, was the first player after World War II to kick 1000 goals in his career. He finished with a total of 1057

Jason Dunstall and Gary Ablett senior. Wade played 267 VFL football matches between 1961 through 1975 - 208 with Geelong and the remainder at North. He topped the home-and-away goal-kicking four times against formidable competition such as Hawthorn’s Peter Hudson and Collingwood’s Peter McKenna. Wade played in premierships with Geelong in 1963 and the Kangaroos in 1975. He was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 1996. Friends and Cats figures were shocked to hear of the footballing giant’s illness. A club past players and officials association spokesman told the Independent Wade was “a larger than life character”. “We certainly value his contribution to the past players,” he said.

POLICE have arrested a man who left his seriously injured girlfriend for dead after a Newcomb car crash in January. Coby Blake, 22, was remanded in custody on a series of charges including car theft, speeding and failing to render assistance after a vehicle accident.

Expert’s contamination fear WARNING: Robyn Perlstein is concerned about contamination of gluten-free food. 135086 Picture: REG RYAN

Coeliacs at risk By NOEL MURPHY

1172963-KC9-15

CROSS-CONTAMINATION during the preparation of glutenfree foods could be savaging the health of more than 2000 coeliac sufferers across Geelong, according to a leading dietitian. Restaurants, cafes and household kitchens were all potential danger zones with short-term and long-term risks for coeliac patients, said East Geelong Medical Centre’s Robyn Perlstein. Symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal pain could last days from a single simple slip-up, she warned. “If you use the same chopping board for gluten and gluten-free bread it only takes a few crumbs flying around...or if you drain

normal pasta through a colander and then straight after that use the same colander for gluten-free pasta,” Ms Perlstein said. “Washing in the dishwasher is all quite safe - it’s sharing knives and colanders and chopping boards.” Ms Perlstein said restaurant proprietors must have “a good understanding about contamination in the kitchen”. “With individuals...they need to ask proprietors a lot of questions, like ‘Does this have soy sauce added with gluten? Do you make dishes separately from others so there’s no contamination?’ “Quite a few places say they’re gluten-free but can they guarantee they’re completely gluten-free?” Ms Perlstein’s concerns ex-

tended to packaging and labelling and follow widespread outrage over imported berries linked to hepatitis A cases. Concerns have also been raised about unchecked imported seafood kept in sewageinfected water. Coeliac Australia is trialling a gluten-free accreditation for restaurants, under which staff are extensively trained and audited on food preparation. The organisation encourages coeliacs to support gluten-free restaurants but “cannot guarantee the availability of gluten-free food”. “It is important that ingredients are always checked and that you satisfy yourself the food is gluten-free and free from contamination.”

GOR tourism value falls $92m By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN THE VALUE of tourism fell $92 million in the Great Ocean Road region during 2012/2013, according to new figures. The region’s tourism employment fell 6.5 per cent, or 1300, over the same period, according to the State Tourism Satellite Accounts. But Geelong and Bellarine tourism boss Roger Grant said the falls were confined to the western end of the region. Latest figures for the Geelong

Road’s ‘western end’ blamed for loss, job cuts sub-region showed increases in domestic overnight visitors and tourism market share, he said. The disparities between Geelong and the western end of the Great Ocean Road supported establishment of a defined local tourism region in its own right, Mr Grant said. Geelong was included with the Great Ocean Road when the previous state government redrew

boundaries for tourism regions. But Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula decided to go it alone instead of joining a new mega tourism board, losing access to state funding as a result. New Tourism Minister and Lara MP John Eren is reconsidering the arrangement. Mr Grant said Victorian tourism was in a three-speed economy, with Melbourne “going

gangbusters” and neighbouring regions recording growth. “The challenge is for the outlying regions, such as along the Murray, east Gippsland, and the western end of the Great Ocean Rd. They reason they’re not performing as well is due to the changing nature of tourism. “More Victorians are heading overseas but those taking domestic short breaks are not travelling as far, they’re staying closer to

Melbourne.” Mr Grant said the figures should be used only to identify trends over a period of time. “We don’t rely totally on that information because it’s a bit like looking in the rear vision mirror and tourism is always subject to external variations like the exchange rate and visitation patterns.” The State Tourism Satellite

Trawler jobs, union’s fears

Geelong riders on a tour for cancer cure By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A $16 MILLION Tour de Cure cancer fundraiser will include Geelong as part of its signature ride for the first time this year. Four Geelong riders - Byron Mitchell, Paul Beretta, Steve Young and Susie Harris - will ride a coastal route from Adelaide to Melbourne with the tour’s 90-strong peloton. The signature tour will arrive in Geelong on 1 May and depart for the final leg of the eight-day ride on 2 May. Mr Mitchell, a teacher, said he often had students in his St Ignatius College classes whose families had been affected by cancer. “My mother-in-law is suffering cancer and there wouldn’t be many families that have been untouched by the disease,” he said. “By raising many millions

of dollars since 2007 the Tour de Cure has funded over 180 cancer research, support and prevention projects, leading to 13 cancer breakthroughs.” The Tour de Cure requires each rider and support staff to raise significant money. The Geelong team has organised two events to help them raise funds. The team’s Hunt for a Cure is a bike-based scavenger hunt around Geelong, the Bellarine Peninsula and the Surf Coast on Sunday. More information about the hunt is available at huntforacure.com.au. Dine for a Cure at Fyansford Hotel on 17 March will feature Geelong’s three-time world mountain bike 24-hour champion, Jessica Douglas, and Peter Fletcher, who aims to become the first person to row unassisted from New York to London.

Accounts said the industry contributed about $1.7 billion to the Great Ocean Road economy, employing around 18,600. Tourism in Geelong was worth about $302 million and 4700 jobs. The Great Ocean Road region ranked fourth compared to other Victorian tourism regions based on direct share of the regional economy. But the region supplied a significant amount of the state-wide direct contribution of tourism, ranking second behind Melbourne.

Geelong Star addressed environmental concerns with advanced exclusion devices and sonar detection systems to avoid large species like seals and dolphins, he said. The mid-water trawler with onboard processing and freezing capacity has a crew of 34, four of them European and the remainder Australian. Its fishing quota is 16,500 tonnes. Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) said strict regulations ensured all fishing operations were undertaken sustainably. AFMA said the Geelong Star would be fitted with a GPS tracking system and carry independent observers and electronic monitoring technology including cameras to check fishing practices. The boat would also need an AFMAapproved vessel management plan. Environmentalists and recreational anglers have also expressed concern about the trawler, which would fish for redbait and two mackeral species during the 2015/2016 fishing season.

TWO HEAVYWEIGHT cranes have lifted 18 massive bridge beams into place as part of work on Baanip Boulevard, connecting Geelong’s ring road and Surf Coast Highway at Grovedale. The 18 concrete beams, each weighing around 83 tonnes, were lifted in place over the top of the GeelongWarrnambool railway line. VicRoads’ Tony Hedley said two cranes with a combined weight of 500 tonnes positioned the 38-metre beams for the 112m bridge. “The level of progress on Baanip Boulevard is pleasing and things are moving forward and upwards.” Mr Hedley said the 4.5km, two-lane road would be complete next year.

Lyons defends planning pace

1173170-EG07-15

By NOEL MURPHY BUILDING permit delays are usually due to application errors, mayor Darryn Lyons has said following industry claims Geelong has millions of dollars of investment tied up in red tape. “Any delay in getting a permit is usually because applicants haven’t provided the correct information,” Cr Lyons told the Independent. “Recent statistics show our permit application approvals and responses are well within suggested state response time guidelines with response times showing a reduction in recent months. “At the end of last year 83 per cent of applications were processed within 60 days. Geelong

has gone above and beyond the state VicSmart planning system, introducing 10-day turnarounds for an additional seven types of planning applications in central Geelong.” Other municipalities poaching Geelong planners could also be contributing to the problem, Cr Lyons suggested. Delays were cited last week by local building industry figure Pat Sgro who told the Independent that a planning department bottleneck was throttling the city’s domestic sector. “The people who’re longing for the build of their home, the people who are actually paying money, are so completely over it and at their wits end - but why? But City Hall said Mr Sgro

“appeared to have confused planning permits and building permits”. “Planning permits are issued by local government, while building permits can be issued by local government but are morefrequently issued by building surveyors.” Cr Lyons said that when he became mayor he asked City of Greater Geelong planning chief Peter Bettess “to make our planning department the best in the state”. “And full credit to Peter and his team, they’ve done that. Our planning department has gained an enviable reputation and, as a result, our planners are being poached.”

Show blasting into public days AIRBORNE daredevils, screaming jets and massive fire bombs will kick off the public days of Avalon’s international airshow today. Organisers expect more than 250,000 patrons at the show, which began with a giant private trade expo earlier this week and which will feature the first observance of the Gallipoli centenary. World War I aerial dogfights featuring Sopwith Camels and Fokker triplanes, earthbound military re-enact-

ments, state-of-the-art Super Hornet fighter planes, giant cargo craft, ultraexpensive private jets and the world’s best aerobatics artists will also appear. Almost 1000 airplanes will be on show, either on exhibit or flying overhead, including Spitfires, Mustangs, Meteors, Sabres, Catalinas, Canberras, Nieuports, Kittyhawks, Hornets, Hawks, C17s and B52s. Trade worth billions of dollars can be exchanged in the trade expo, which this drew 90 military, industry and po-

litical delegations and around 50,000 people to the airshow’s 26 conferences. The airshow’s business side is Geelong’s biggest trade show and features ground-breaking technologies. Among the sophisticated aerospace hardware on show is a 3Dprinted jet engine, which Deakin and Monash universities developed with the CSIRO. The airshow will be the first public exhibition of the printed engine.

Aerospace Australia Limited boss Ian Honnery said the innovation program went to the trade show’s “very reason for existing...to support the development of Australian industry capability and capacity“. “Innovation lies at the heart of Australia’s technology-rich aerospace and defence industries and the innovation showcase, along with our industry innovation awards program, is our way of contributing to the fundamental health of this vital industry sector.”

Deal to help Free workshops connect businesses with efficiency gains By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN sports firms

INSULPAK’S Robert Hegyesi credits his North Shore company’s sustainability drive as the difference between business booming and being another manufacturing also-ran. “We could have just kept on doing our manufacturing like everyone else and we would be in the same position as they are,” Mr Hegyesi said. “Like many, we lost quite a bit of work when Alcoa closed but we have not put off any employees – we found other jobs for them to do.” The company’s sustainability efforts range from solar panels and LED lighting to water tanks and almost zero waste. The insulation and air-conditioning manufacturer spent $130,000 across five buildings housing several divisions, saving up to $25,000 a year with neutral energy bills. Insulpak graduated from a Geelong Manufacturing Council Greenlight course on sustainability for business and will participate in its energy and materials master class series next week. Industry experts including ECO2Sys’s Deane Belfield run the free workshops with Sustainability Victoria funding. “Energy efficiency improvements can typically result in commercial gains for businesses of up to 30 per cent and beyond and with material efficiency this can be greater still,” Mr Belfield said. “Energy prices are continuing to rise.” More informaton about the workshops are available by emailing jenny.perks@geelongmanufacturingcouncil.com.au or phoning 5222 8000.

GEELONG-BASED Australian Sports Technologies Network (ASTN) has partnered with one of the world’s leading advisory firms, PwC, to help sport businesses grow. PwC will host workshops and master classes on themes including research and development, fundraising, business structures, digital innovation and technology as part of the deal. ASTN chair James Demetriou said the network was excited to secure PwC as a major corporate sponsor. “It will give our members unique access to a suite of PwC’s experts and networks, and help them better address the opportunities and barriers that the sector encounters,” Mr Demetriou said. PwC will provide ASTN with access to its new online R&D tax service to help new and emerging sports technology companies access government incentives quickly. Mr Demetrious said PwC would also lead a major industry study in conjunction with ASTN. The study would give members “insights and connections into opportunities in key sports markets” overseas, he FREE SUN: Insulpak managing director Robert Hegyesi with some of the 30kw of solar panels running his company. 135163 Picture: REG RYAN said.

Residents fear Labor’s new consultations a ‘smoke screen’

Newtown bus cuts postponed By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN OPPONENTS to the scrapping of bus services to Newtown’s hilliest area have won a reprieve because of a delay to the launch of Victoria’s Regional Rail Link (RRL). A lack of trains for the link has forced the eight-week delay, which also means changes to bus timetables have been postponed. But Geelong Labor MP Christine Couzens claimed the postponement of bus changes was due to the intervention of the Andrews Government. Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan blamed the RRL delay

on the former state government, claiming it failed to order enough trains “to guarantee reliable services” on the new link. Ms Allan said any train faults or delay in delivering rolling stock after the $4 billion project was introduced in April, as initially planned, would mean service cancellations and “chaos“ for commuters. She said deferring the start of RRL would also delay train, tram and bus timetable changes. Ms Couzens then announced a second round of consultation on the changes. But affected residents have not been told of the

new consultations. The Independent reported last month that elderly and unwell Newtown residents could be forced to sell up and move without access to bus services. More than 200 residents around the Barwon River end of West Fyans St signed a petition protesting the cuts and presented it to Ms Couzens. She said the community response to last year’s consultation was “so significant” that a second round was needed. Ms Couzens understood residents’ concerns about the first round of consultation, “which is

Flood of support on Marissa’s ‘list’ By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN THE COMMUNITY response for Lara’s Marissa Rhodes has overwhelmed organisers of her fundraising activities. The 20-year-old has been given months to live after being diagnosed with an incurable and rare form of cancer in September. Donations have poured in, with organisers Sharlene Bell and Romayne Day hard-pressed to keep up. In fact, they had far too many donated items to handle at an auction and trivia night at the Shell Club last Saturday, which raised more than $15,000. Marissa’s simple yet heartfelt bucket list stirred so many to help out, Sharlene believed. “She’s ticked off the first item, to go to a live concert, and she hopes to go to the Queensland theme parks, visit Port Arthur and ride Puffing Billy,” Sharlene said. The excess of donations will go under the hammer at a second auction at Geelong’s Wintergarden from 4.30pm to 6.30pm Sunday. “It’s appropriate because a lot of the items that have come in are artworks donated by established and up-and-coming artists around the region.” Works by Joel Wolter, Paul Waycott, Janet Goldman and Mark Cairns as well as accommodation vouchers, signed Geelong Supercats memorabilia, tickets, and lots more items will be up for grabs. Wintergarden afternoon teas and light meals will also be available. Sharlene asked anyone wanting to help could phone her on 0450 783 231 or Romayne on 0417 453 908.

One of the petition organisers, Lionel Tunnell-Jones, said many elderly and unwell residents would be left without transport. “We would be very disappointed if some of the concerns we’ve raised about our bus route aren’t included in any changes made by Public Transport Victoria (PTV),” Mr Tunnell-Jones said. “We’re not interested in community consultation that maybe already has a forgone conclusion, especially as we’ve received no assurances regarding our original petition. We’re concerned this is a sort of smoke screen and we’re a little suspicious they might do that.”

and what’s the fuel-efficiency like? Justin kept providing useful tips, like checking whether the car had a timing chain or belt, the reason being that a car with a belt will most likely need to change it every 100,000km. Pricey!

14

Justin went on to explain some of the major things to consider running cost-wise when buying a used car, such as whether anyone can service it or whether the car has to be taken to an approved dealer. Also, how much do the tyres cost

On the other hand, timing chains tend to be found in the more-expensive cars. Justin also mentioned to bear in mind that ongoing running costs can be higher with European cars. His final recommendation was to ensure any used car purchased had RACV approval. “If not I’d send it back where it came from,” he said. Happy motoring.

ON MY travels in South Geelong this week I spotted Mike Hanneysee Car Sales. To me it seemed just another usedcar dealership on Fyans St but little did I know it’s been trading for 52 years. Wow. In fact, the yard’s LMCT – its licence to sell cars – is number 900. These days anyone obtaining an LMCT will have a number well over 10,000. I wandered around the car lot, where director Justin Hanneysee, Mike’s son, greeted me. Justin really knows his stuff when it comes to cars. My objective was to find an inexpensive yet decent car; something ideal for a student or someone who doesn’t want to dig too deep into their back pocket. I found – don’t gasp – a black Holden Viva! It’s a three-door Korean hatchback that’s said to be very reliable. It also looks great in black. With 70,000km on what I would call the ‘mileage’ clock, and at a driveaway cost of $8372, it was a real bargain. On further investigation I discovered the car includes ABS, or antilock-brakes, an important safety feature that stops the car from skidding while still enabling the driver to steer. It also had a backup warranty, four airbags, a CD player, air-conditioning and keyless entry. The four-cylinder, 1.6-litre engine also meant the Viva would be low on fuel use, which sounds good.

Land prices fall ‘but still too high’ LAND in the Barwon region has become slightly more affordable, according to new data. RP Data figures showed the region's median land price had fallen from $185,000 last year to $183,000, sliding from Australia's fifth most expensive to eighth. The Independent reported last month that Geelong was the 19th most unaffordable property market out of 378 major international centres. Geelong ranked along-

side the ex-urban area of outer London for unaffordability in the 11th annual International Housing Affordability Survey. Housing Industry Association senior economist Shane Garrett said Australian regional residential land sales demonstrated “the classic hallmarks of a market fast running into supply problems”. “There are clearly pressures building in terms of new residential land supply,” Mr Garrett said.

“The process of delivering new land supply and the requisite infrastructure for new housing is currently too slow and too expensive. “It appears that shovel-ready residential land is starting to dry up against the backdrop of record new home building activity. “Policymakers have to intervene in order to allow for Australia’s long term housing needs to be met.”

Letters iPads raising drones IN response to Christie Whitney and Wendy Valentine (Letters, 20 February), I have worked in education and experienced firsthand the effects of iPads in the school system. I have also raised four children without iPads. I agree with Ms Whitney about iPads giving exposure to “limitless educational apps“. However, I have never experienced a child locking themself in their bedroom to play educational apps. Parents have approached me exasperated and concerned about their kids’ addictive behaviour with iPads. I have witnessed students sitting like drones with this technology, oblivious to their surroundings. Diverting their attention elsewhere becomes increasingly difficult, with the kids becoming distressed, inconsolable and agitated, further substantiating their developing obsession. Ms Valentine wrote I “should listen to future generations.“ I listen to disgruntled parents and see the impact of iPads, which is why I wrote my letter of 13 February. NAPLAN results are falling as the iPad generation’s ability to write well deteriorates dramatically. Ms Whitney claimed her child experienced the same feelings playing on the iPad as playing outside. I disagree, as does literacy expert Sue Palmer, author of Toxic Childhood, who says “kids need to grow up in real life, real space and real time “. Learning to think requires seeing, smelling, touching, holding, hearing and interacting with live people. Introducing toddlers to a virtual world instead of the real world deprives them of precious time bonding with their parents, which is integral to healthy development and wellbeing. No machine can substitute these experiences. Mary Bicanic Norlane

Learn, don’t play, technology I AGREE with Mary Bicanic. The enthusiasm of Wendy Valentine and Christie Whitney for iPads is understandable because children the age of theirs show interest in colourful, noisy, fast-moving iPad pictures, and while it lasts they appear to have a basic concept on what comes on the screen. But without us understanding how to apply this information to their lives their interest diminishes, but the iPad, with its vast material on hand, remains.

Layers of global thickening evidence undeniable I AGREE with Double Take that global thickening is a real threat to our environment (Independent, 20 February) but global thickening deniers will be out in force to reject this theory and all its supporting facts. Global thickening has two causes: one is natural, accumulated dinosaur bones, mounds of elephant droppings and guano from seabirds and bats; the other is man-made, caused by the build-up of detritus and dust around ruined cities and old cars abandoned in deserts. This cannot be denied. For centuries archaeologists have been excavating buried cities and have proved that towns have been built on top of previous towns. In some cases several layers of towns

CONSENSUS: Is the world thickening? Yes it is, say readers. have been discovered on the same site. All this makes our planet larger, and therefore closer to the Sun, so global thickening is actually the cause of global warming. However, I’m sure devoted Independent readers, with their great talent for raising all kinds of innovative ideas, will come up with some answers to remedy this dire situation. For example, mining could be boosted – digging up coal,

Children then access the material and a never-ending search for more sets in motion. This interest remains for life and a false sense of superiority and knowledge sets in. But information is not knowledge. By the time children realise this their formative years are past and their chance to learn is gone. Their beloved iPad remains but the child’s head is empty of knowledge. Our bureaucratic state primary school education system is a basket case. Few teachers have knowledge of teaching mathematics, physics and general science, the subjects of the technology and well-paid employment of the future. Australian chief scientist Professor Ian Chubb is so alarmed at this he advocates putting specialist science and maths teachers in every primary school. Parents should throw iPads in the bin, get their child a book of technology subjects and go through it with them until they understand. The employable people of the future will have the knowledge to design iPads and their apps. N Sezonov Cape Clear

iron ore, salt, opals and gold would thin out Earth’s surface. Then some of the worst areas of thickening could be scooped up and stuffed down the empty mining pits. Mining activities at Kalgoorlie are an amazing example of what could be done in this way – they have dug the biggest man-made hole in the world, which is just begging to be filled up with thickened earth. Melva Stott Anglesea ANYONE who watches Time Team should know global thickening is real and has been causing rising ground levels for millennia. Now it appears to be quickening. R Graham Belmont

Sceptical of ‘denier’ use IT’S HARD to understand why people like Phil Baulch (Letters, 20 February) wants to use pejorative terms like “denier. Even by his own admission, climate sceptics agree the climate is changing, so nobody is denying anything. ‘Climate sceptic’ is the correct term. I refuse to use labels like ‘warmists’ because it is not conducive to rational debate. A royal commission on climate change should be called immediately to separate the facts from the fallacies. Alan Barron Grovedale

No doubt who’s cocksure PHIL Baulch quoted Bob Brown: “Stupid people are cocksure of everything. Intelligent people are full of doubt. The most cocksure in the climate debate are

Email: editorial@geelongindependent.com.au PO Box 407, Geelong, 3220 Fax: 5249 6799

those saying the matter is “settled“ and demanding questioners be silenced. Climate science is complex, and so many questions need answers. Some of we sceptics, defined as those who refuse to believe ideas for which we see no persuasive evidence, like to see answers to puzzling questions, as do climatologists who, like good scientists, spend their lives looking for answers. We do not “deny“ anything for which we can see a scientific explanation. I agree with Mr Baulch that we should be “prudent...about how we proceed with the human project but that doesn’t mean throwing trillions of dollars at over-simplifications like ‘humans plus CO2 equal climate change’ only to find we’ve missed the other pieces in the jigsaw. Tim Saclier Leopold

Scientists questionable IF EARTH has never been hotter I would like to know why Greenland was once a green land, how hot it was then compared to now and what caused it. People need to question what scientists and governments are trying to impose upon their lives and not be brainwashed. Past experiences with thalidomide and atomic bomb testing in South Australia should serve as a lesson to this nation. Many factors influence life on Earth. A strictly scientific approach is short-sighted. B Bourke Balliang

Costly spine adjustment TENDERS have been called for a central Geelong green spine idea. Will councillors doorknock their wards to advise residents how City Hall will spend the $4.5 million? What budgets have been slashed to squeeze out that cash? What will be the impact on traffic and transport? The idea of a scaled-down version of New York’s Central Park is laughable. New York’s city fathers had the foresight of future planning. We already have Johnstone Park as city green space. Judith Fisher South Geelong

By NOEL MURPHY VIKA Bull’s belting soul strains are a mirror to the soul that have underpinned her stellar vocal career as one of Australia’s best singers. When she was asked to perform the songs of R&B great Etta James in a narrative concert, however, she was taken aback. Bull was nervous and uncertain, by her own admission, at tackling the works of her favourite singer. She needn’t have worried, though. Bull’s raw ability, not to mention her professional nous, held her in great stead, with sellout seasons in Melbourne and Sydney to rapturous applause and rave reviews testament to her talents. “I’ve been singing Etta for two years now, the first show was in 2013 and I was really nervous,” Bull told the Independent. “It was hard to memorise the script and telling her life story then switching to singing and back to telling story again. I was, ‘How do I remember all this?’ It was quite stressful.” Etta James’ life was problematic, to be kind. An extraordinary singer, she was riven by drug addiction, prison and rehab clinics. But she was one of the first to bridge the gap between R&B, rock and roll and pop. She has inspired the careers of such contemporary artists as Christina Aguilera, Joss Stone, Amy Winehouse and Adele. “She strikes me as a very honest singer,” Bull said. “You can hear everything, she doesn’t over-sing. She sings with pure emotion, from her soul, and

Neil SOULFUL: Bull on stage with her backing show in the Etta James show, on the way to GPAC. she can get her message across and, oh, the power of it – that’s why I like her so much. “She certainly had her demons, I’m not sure why. Maybe she had no-one steer her in the right direction. “She started on the road at 15 and there can be some pretty strong temptations, and of course you’d go for it.” Bull said she and her illustrious sister, Linda, always had a strong guiding hand to keep them in line in their parents, who guarded them against the excesses of rock and roll. “We might have gone off the rails a little bit but there’d be a family meeting to keep us on track,” she laughed. Bull has sung alongside some of Australia’s most iconic voices including John Farnham, Tim Finn and The Black Sorrows. She has also supported worldstage musicians Bob Dylan,

Sting, Joe Cocker and Billy Joel. Bull has maintained a successful music career with sister Linda, helping The Black Sorrows to achieve multi-platinum status in the 1980s and releasing their own albums. In her first solo headline show, At Last: The Etta James Story, coming to Geelong Performing Arts Centre’s Playhouse on 26 March, Bull has finally been given the opportunity to showcase the true depth and range of her soulful, gusty voice as she belts out the repertoire of one of the world’s most-powerful female singers. “I’m just blown away by how well the show has been received,” she said. “When this journey started less than a year ago. I was so nervous about being able to do it right. But the response has been amazing, it’s incredibly humbling.”

Anne’s in RAW NEW ENtoTRANCE

By NOEL MURPHY

FELLOW comics adore Anne Edmonds, the no-holds-barred, banjo-wielding jokester headed Geelong’s way this weekend to host a Raw Comedy competition. “You never know what’s going to come out of her mouth,” said Kate McLennan, Geelong’s half of hit online cooking comedy The Katering Show – fair praise coming from someone with the same entertaining affliction. Edmonds said her approach was fairly simple, notwithstanding its surprise factor. “I use a strategy I used growing up: telling stories I always listened to at home that made me laugh,” she told the Independent. “It’s an extension of that in my stand-up. Stories I picked up and I’ve used making friends laugh for years – just roll it out. “The job of comedy really is to look at the status quo and then question it. I look at things people are going along with and ask is this all it’s cracked up to be? “It’s the same with anyone taking themselves too seriously. Fresher menu

IT’S NOT so much a changing of the guard as a return to duty at White Eagle House. Jodie Armstrong, the head chef at the popular Breakwater outlet, is back in the kitchen, offering a revamped menu that is attracting new faces and the return of many of old-time regulars. “I had a four-year break but I’m back now with my mother Lyn Lunn as my business partner, we’ve made quite a few changes and customers are responding positively to them and we are getting busier and busier,” Jodie said.

“We’re gearing up for the autumn season, it’s a fresh season and fresh is what we are all about. We do not pre-prepare, all our produce is fresh, the customers know that and that is why they keep coming back in numbers.” Well-known as a familyfriendly venue, Jodie is making it even more inclusive, especially on burger themed nights. “Coming into autumn we always see a surge in requests for burgers, so we’re inviting customers to define their own burg-

ers and what they want on them. It will be interesting to see what they come up with,” Jodie said. The chef felt it was a bit of a homecoming when she returned to White Eagle House last year and wants visitors to experience that same kind of welcome. Every day from Monday to Friday, at 1.30pm, there will be a meat pack raffle from Tender Cut Meats for anybody who has purchased a meal, while on Sunday there will also be a $50 meat pack raffle.

College programs in touch with changes

Students learn how to grow food sustainably in the Enviro Garden. examples of learning at the College. Research suggests that most students at school now will work in jobs that don’t currently exist, will live and

families can meet Mr Barr and teaching staff, and experience the college, classes and activities guided by students.

Clonard grows CLONARD College has its roots buried deeply in the Brigidine traditions of strength and kindliness - a joyous celebration of learning and collegiality. The college holds dear the belief that all students are blessed with gifts and that it's the responsibility of education to enable and promote their giftedness. From an initial cohort of 40 in 1956, the college has undergone significant change in its size, infrastructure and curriculum. However, what remains static is the sense of peace and oneness that pervades the college, palpable to all who visit our school. Now accommodating 835 students, Clonard boasts a broad range of learning pathways to enable all students to enjoy success during their secondary years. Students are encouraged to take ownership of their learning, particularly through the middle and senior years to enable them to segue easily into tertiary education or work placement. Clonards offers a comprehensive range of VCE subjects and alternate year 12 studies including VCAL and VET. The school has undergone a physical transformation through the purchase of the site at Minerva Road and the construction of the year eight and nine centre. While Clonard has doubled its size the student body has increased only minimally so the pastoral atmosphere of the school is maintained and students can enjoy the reflective, sporting and social spaces around the school. These new learning spaces represent our investment in student physical well-being as well as spiritual and academic development.

YOUNG people need to be confident, curious, resilient and empathetic to lead in their ever changing world, says Geelong College principal Andrew Barr. “At Geelong College our young people learn to become independent global citizens, Mr Barr says. “We understand that the most important aspect of a modern education is learning how to learn. Mr Barr says key capabilities such as creativity, deep thinking and a heart for service to others will help make a positive contribution to a changing global society. “These capabilities are being integrated into subjects, projects, co-curricular opportunities and experiences as a part of our Vision for Learning and enable a deeper and richer understanding, he explains. “Students experience immersions in Enviro (year four), Designing the Future (year five) and Media (year nine) where core subjects are learned and communicated through hands on themed projects. “Designing the Future, a new program, sees year five students tackling real-world problems with craftsmanship and design. “The real learning is in understanding the problems and experimenting with possible solutions, using burgeoning technology such as 3D printing and robotics. These are just a few

Many benefits of tinting with the specialists at Tintmaster

www.darbyspaints.com.au

WINDOW tinting makes cars look cool but Tintmaster can give many more reasons why it’s worth tinting with unique Ultra-Carbon film, the highest performance product on the market. First, it keeps the interior cooler, especially in summer. Tinting protects occupants from harmful UVA rays, which can cause skin cancer and premature ageing, and also helps block UV rays that can lead to cracking and facing of vehicles’ interior surfaces. Window tinting film helps hold shattered glass together in the event of an accident so it doesn’t smash all over occupants’ faces. Tinting also removes glare from the Sun and other headlights, reducing the chances of accidents. Burglary risks are also reduced because tinting decreases the visibility of contents inside cars, such as mobile phones or other valuables. Air-conditioning is cheaper to run because it doesn’t have to work so hard with Tintmaster tint, meaning reduced load on the engine for improved fuel economy. However, installation is critical to window tinting and Tintmaster is expert in applying its products to all models of cars. Staff undertake thorough training and stay up to date with changes in tinting techniques and technologies. Tinting with Tintmaster usually costs between $250 and $500 and takes around half a day. Whether its black windows for great looks or achieving maximum heat and UV protection, Tintmaster has the solution to any tinting requirement. Meeting individual requirements is a specialty of the company, with prospective clients always welcome to talk to the staff about the best window tint job for any car. Tintmaster has been servicing the Geelong area for 12 years.

IndySport Cat high a low chance bite

On the

IF GEELONG Cricket Club wants to finish its season on a high it will need to chase down Essendon’s imposing 9/308 declared at Windy Hill tomorrow. After being asked to bowl first last week, the Cats’ attack battled bravely on a good wicket and, although the Bombers enjoyed a number of healthy partnerships, coach Damian Shanahan would be proud of his team’s effort. Jeremy Hart (3/111) and Justin McPhee (3/36) were the pick of the bowlers. Unfortunately, Geelong will begin in the morning having already lost a wicket after skipper Matthew Harrison was unable to survive two overs last week. No one doubts that the Cats have the class to win tomorrow but the entire team will need to be at their best to do so. In Geelong Cricket Association, with one round remaining in division one neither sixth placed Murgheboluc or seventh placed Grovedale were able to secure the points in last week’s one-day games. The Frogs at least have their destiny in their hands when they travel to Richmond Crescent to play Geelong City. City has been solid all year and will be tough to beat. Grovedale will also have to beat a quality team in South Barwon to sneak in itself.

Local

cricket Jim Timberlake

While all that goes on, mathematically Geelong West can still sneak in to the top six by defeating East Belmont and relying on the others losing. As always in the final round of the season, teams will do their best to keep their minds on their own games but will also be checking for scores from around town. Selections: LARA v Leopold, GEELONG CITY v Murgheboluc, SOUTH BARWON v Grovedale, EAST BELMONT v Geelong West, NORTH GEELONG v Newtown & Chilwell, Bell Post Hill v ST JOSEPH’S. In division two, St Peter’s returned to form last week just when it counted most. In their crucial game against Newcomb & District, the Saints bowlers, led by veteran Steve Illingworth (3/29), restricted their visitors to just 129, which they chased down with relative ease to leapfrog back into the top six.

With a winnable game against Guild St Mary’s this week, St Peter’s should retain its spot and contest this year’s finals series. Across town, though, don’t be surprised if Newcomb & District bowls first in an attempt to snare outright points. Selections: Guild St Mary’s v ST PETER’S, NEWCOMB & DISTRICT v Alexander Thomson, ST ALBANS BREAKWATER v Waurn Ponds, HIGHTON v Marshall, MODEWARRE v Manifold Heights, Thomson v TORQUAY. And in division three, it’s a cliff-hanger to see who gets to continue the right to contest for this year’s premiership. Bell Park is sixth but that basically counts for nothing because it plays eighth placed Little River, which will overtake the Dragons with a win. But seventh placed Winchelsea can still have a major say in things if it wins against Corio, a result that appears quite likely on current form. The pressure on these three teams will be immense but whoever comes out on top will go into the finals with a hard edge and could cause a few upsets in March. Selections: INVERLEIGH v Meredith, LETHBRIDGE v Corio Bay, TEESDALE v Bannockburn, WINCHELSEA v Corio, Little River v BELL PARK, Shelford bye.

READY TO GO: The Warriors line-up before the start of their opening match in 2015 last Friday.

Chris Pitman

Kingies, salmon boated offshore CALM offshore conditions last weekend allowed anglers to hook into kingfish. Fishing World’s Reece Pit setting out off Ocean Grove on Saturday afternoon, sounding up an excellent showing of kings. He boated four to 65cm on small knife jigs, along with a huge Australian salmon just over 3kg. Michael Moore and I fished alongside Reece for similar results. However, we found that retrieving soft plastics fast through the feeding salmon caught bigger fish. Whiting to 43cm continued biting on the grass beds just outside Queenscliff Harbour. Pippies and tenderised squid were the baits of choice. The harbour produced silver trevally on soft plastics fished around the top of the tide, along with salmon to 800g. Jason Andrew fished behind Mud Island, boating a feisty gummy shark of 20kg on an old salmon fillet that had sat in his freezer for months. Anglers fishing Clifton Springs around daybreak caught lots of pinkie snapper over the spoil grounds on soft plastics. Gulp Turtleback worms in Pumpkin Green worked well. Pike to almost 1m and flathead reaching 50cm were also taken. Later in the mornings the Alcoa Pier area was more productive. The entrance to Corio Bay around Bird Rock was a hot spot for whiting and flathead on pippies. Anglers fishing the channel leading into the grammar school caught flathead and pike, especially while casting soft plastics. Bag limits of whiting were taken around the Avalon and Werribee area, although many undersized fish were thrown back. John Mole and Brian Long again travelled down the Surf Coast where they were able to spin up numerous salmon to just over 2kg. The rocks either side of Lorne were productive. Portland and Port Fairy were hot for tuna in 30m to 40m. Dropping small knife jigs over fish holding deep has been a popular method, while other anglers reported success on fish to 25kg on trolled skirted lures such as the UV Richters. Wurdee Boluc Reservoir expert Michael Evans put a few hours in casting Fish Arrow soft plastics from the main rock wall to bank a well-conditioned redfin of 46cm. He also saw other anglers catch brown trout to 3kg and rainbows of 1kg using baits such as mudeye and scrubworms. Lake Purrumbete produced rainbow trout to 1.5kg for anglers casting shallow-diving hard-body lures over the numerous weed beds. Fishing dawn or dusk increased catch rates, while drifting mudeyes down deep along the weed beds over at the east bank during the day also worked. The western district’s Merri River fished well for brown trout to 1.5kg on mudeye. The next week might be worth jigging for the smaller-model kingfish off Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads. An easy land-based option could be casting soft plastics for trevally in Queenscliff Harbour. Freshwater fanciers could try casting lures over the shallow weed beds or fishing mudeyes deep for trout at Lake Purrumbete.

Warriors on rebound after opening-round defeat By JASIP ZILIC NORTH Geelong Warriors faced FFA Cup semi-finalist Bentleigh Greens in Geelong’s opening NPL clash last Friday night at Kingston Heath Sport Complex, going down 2-0 in an exciting encounter. The first half was played at frantic speed, with end-to-end action keeping both sides on their toes. North Geelong had the earlier chances, Juso Julardzija having a chip shot from distance well-saved by Alistair Bray to deny the Warriors. Vito Cichello then weaved his

way into the box to create an open shot at goal only to slice it wide with his left foot. Bentleigh began turning the screws and pressuring North Geelong’s one-touch midfield passes, turning the misdirected ones into attacks. However, Warriors custodian Daniel Zilic thwarted shot after shot in what was a Bentleigh siege on goals to keep his side in the contest. Eventually Zilic couldn’t keep the scores from opening and in the 37th minute Matt Thurtell was played into the box and slotted out

of Zilic’s reach. The second half was at a subdued pace, with both sides using build-up play to work their chances. Julardzija and Mark Paleka both pressed the Bentleigh defence with chances narrowly missing. North Geelong continued to weave its way into good positions but was unable to provide enough physical pressure on the Bentleigh defence to crack open the Warriors’ account. Five minutes from full-time Michael Anderson went on a darting run, with his shot forcing a spill from

Bray in goals and coming agonisingly close to going over the line. The resulting action put the hopes of equalising out of the Warriors’ reach when Thurtell broke past the defensive line and screwed a ball back past Zilic for sub Jamie De’Abreu to slot in on the line. The Warriors now face another title favourite, South Melbourne, tomorrow at Elcho Park, with under20s action commencing 3pm. South Melbourne is coming off a 1-0 opening-round win against Oakleigh Cannons.
