EMERGENCY services personnel and police worked desperately yesterday afternoon to free a workman in his twenties who was trapped when a trench collapsed on him during ground works at a Cranbourne East housing estate. The incident happened near Tangmere Road and Linsell Boulevard. The man was reported to have died in the incident but neither Victoria Police nor the ambulance service would confirm his death by late yesterday. Worksafe is investigating. 135550 Picture: GARY SISSONS

She later threatened the victim – who had suffered a bruised, swollen eye – with text messages such as “You’re f ... ed”, “You wait till I see you next” and “We’re on our way”. She was also charged with two other accused for the theft of the $75,000 distinctive Ford GT Mustang – stolen from a locked home garage while the owner was on holiday between 2-5 May. Vivianti was identified as the front passenger when the Mustang pulled into a Dandenong North service station a few days later. The driver and Vivianti fled in the car as police approached. The car was soon recovered in Bruce Street, Dandenong. With her offending, the accused had breached a 12-month community corrections order. Vivianti’s lawyer said her life had changed significantly since then, giving up drug-taking and giving birth to a second child in January. He said the single mum was “disgusted and felt sick” about her offending. “She now appreciates a (community) order and will do something with it. “She realises she’s at the doors of jail.” Magistrate Lou Hill said the theft and “very worrying” violence were “high-grade criminal activity”. Notwithstanding Vivianti “blew” her previous corrections order, she was ordered to do 100 hours of voluntary work as part of a 12-month community-based order.

1174667-EG09-15

A SINGLE mum has been placed on a community-based order for violently beating two women as well as being involved in the theft of a rare Mustang convertible from Narre Warren North last year. Kassandra Vivianti, 21, of Narre Warren South, pleaded guilty though argued in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Monday that she was at the time in the grip of a “short and severe” ice addiction. Police prosecutor First Constable Tess Davison told the court Vivianti had crossed a street in Doveton to attack a woman out on an afternoon walk with her dog last April. Egged on by her then-boyfriend, Vivianti took a swig from a can of drink and spat it into the woman’s face. She then repeatedly punched the woman’s face and body. Vivianti pulled the victim’s head down by her hair and kneed her in the face, and continued with the assault until the victim grabbed Vivianti’s glasses. First Const Davison said the victim was hospitalised with a cut, bleeding nose. Vivianti had claimed to police she was protecting her boyfriend but conceded she may have punched her “one too many times”. In another incident, on 1 July, Vivianti, accompanied by an unknown male, punched a woman’s face, pulled her hair and tried to yank her out of a vehicle. Vivianti later denied striking the victim’s face with a wooden bat, telling police she didn’t recall the incident.

Thoughtful paws for ops By BRIDGET SCOTT THE RSPCA was thrilled to open its 14th Victorian opportunity shop on Tuesday, with the latest addition located on High Street, Cranbourne. Around 15 dedicated volunteers were there at the Cranbourne opening, with other stores located throughout the state, including as far as Bendigo, Bairnsdale and Warrnambool. RSPCA Retail Marketing

manager Margaret Droudge said proceeds made at the store made a huge difference to the work of the RSPCA. “It will help to directly support the RSPCA Peninsula as well as the inspectorate,” she said. “All funds go directly to support the work of the RSPCA, including the shelters and animals in need of veterinary care.” Ms Droudge said the more volunteers the better and added

it was exciting to open a store in the heart of Cranbourne. “We are very pleased that Cranbourne has welcomed us to the area,” she said. Anyone can donate to the store directly, with various goods accepted such as good quality clothing, handbags, shoes, accessories, books, toys, sporting goods and more. The opportunity shop is open from 9.30am until 4pm Monday to Friday and 9.30am until 2pm on Saturday.

Centre access for groups COMMUNITY groups around Lynbrook can submit expressions of interest (EOI) around having access to the new Lynbrook Community Centre. Council will take these up until Friday 6 March from those groups interested in using the new facility, located on the corner of Lynbrook Boulevard and Harris Street, Lynbrook. City of Casey Mayor Mick Morland said there would be a number of rooms which could provide for various user groups in the Lynbrook area, such as not-for-profit organisations, agencies, schools or homebased businesses. “Council is confident that

the Lynbrook Community Centre will become a central community facility where people of all ages can come together to learn, play, socialise and express their culture,” he said. He said it would include multiple meeting spaces, training rooms, consulting rooms and a large hall which could be divided into smaller spaces, alongside a commercial kitchen with a large outdoor deck for community use. “It is centrally located, giving it a high profile within the local community and enabling important links with the nearby family and children’s centre and primary school,” Cr Morland said.

“If you’re interested in becoming a regular user of this great new facility once it opens its doors to the community, then fill out an EOI form.” Council has advised that EOI are currently for regular user groups only and casual or one off bookings will not be considered until after regular users have been determined. No private functions will be considered within the first 12 months. For more information on the centre or to download an EOI form visit www.casey.vic.gov. au/lynbrookcc or call Customer Service on 9705 5200.

Street changes restrict road By BRIDGET SCOTT A CRANBOURNE resident said he is concerned about alterations to Clarendon Street in Cranbourne following ongoing developments at Cranbourne Park. President of the Cranbourne Rotary Club Ian Symons said drivers cannot use Clarendon Street as freely anymore because they cannot turn right out of the street or drive straight across.

He said this will restrict access to the main street for people who live in the west. The Cranbourne man said he believed this would create problems for parents of children who attend schools nearby. “A simple installation of a traffic light would have meant that crossing the town was possible,” he said. “It’s really going to congest Sladen Street end of town which already suf-

fers during peak hours.” Manager of Transport at the City of Casey Paul Hamilton confirmed that road users would now only be able to turn left out of the street. He said that changes to the Clarendon Street and South Gippsland Highway intersection are being undertaken by Federation Centres through its development approval for the expansion of Cranbourne Park Shopping Centre. “The development approval as-

sessed the implications of increased traffic movements together with changes to the local network to facilitate the expansion of the centre,” he said. “The impacts of the development on the operation of intersections along the South Gippsland Highway was assessed by VicRoads. “VicRoads supported the application subject to a number of permit conditions.

“One of the VicRoads conditions involved the modification of the Clarendon Street/ South Gippsland Highway intersection to remove the right turn and straight through movements out of Clarendon Street to ensure the safety of the intersection.” Mr Symons said he believed developers of the centre “should be held to have responsibility to ensure traffic flow is able to move reasonably freely”.

Bike victim’s theft of faith By BRIDGET SCOTT A LYNBROOK resident has turned the other cheek after catching a Hampton Park teenager trying to steal his bike. When Alastair Nicholson arrived home last week he was astonished to see a young boy riding his bike down the street. When Mr Nicholson stopped him the young boy apologised and hopped off the bike. Then Mr Nicholson, in an astonishing act of trust and goodwill, let the boy borrow another of his bikes so he could get home. “He had the right attitude, gave me a smile and said ‘I’m sorry’,” Mr Nicholson said. Mr Nicholson said he may have considered contacting the police if the boy reacted differently. He said the teen had been caught on his home’s CCTV which would have captured him entering the property to take the bike, which was actually broken. “He came up on the side of my property and took it,” he said. “I said ‘mate, see those red dots, they indicate that the camera’s filming. I’ve got you on film’.” The boy rode off after they exchanged phone numbers. “He sent me a text half an hour later saying ‘hey, mate, I’m the guy who stole your bike, I got home safe’,” Mr Nicholson said. The next day, the young boy returned the bike which Mr Nicholson said he bought on Ebay. “I expected him to return it and wouldn’t have lent it to him if it was worth a lot,” he said. Mr Nicholson said this is not the first time he had people breaking into his property. However, “I’ve never actually caught someone in the act of stealing before,” he said.

Police wish to speak to this woman regarding the incident. 135324

POLICE have released images of a car they believe was involved in a drive-off at a Lynbrook petrol station earlier this month. Police are still on the hunt for a woman believed to be involved in the incident, which injured an attendant at the United Petroleum petrol station around 9.30pm on Tuesday 3 February. Investigators have been told that staff were alerted to a possible theft happening and a male staff member approached the vehicle. He stood in front of it before it began to drive off. The man jumped on to the car and fell off after the vehicle had travelled around 30 metres. He sustained head and arm injuries and was taken to Dandenong Hospital. The car believed to be involved is a white Toyota sedan. It had a NSW number plate OKC-502, which had previously been reported stolen. The female driver has been described as a Caucasian with brown hair that was possibly a wig. Anyone with any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic. com.au

In Brief

Bark lost in tree battle By BRIDGET SCOTT A CRANBOURNE resident of more than 30 years is at war with the council over a troublesome gum tree. Peter Colthup said he had people from the City of Casey come out to inspect the tree which constantly sheds bark, leaves and branches which “cover three quarters of his lawn”. “I want to be able to landscape the front of my house and would like to sell in a couple of years’ time,” he said. Mr Colthup claimed that the council had refused to remove the tree because it’s still alive. Manager for Parks and Re-

serves at the City of Casey Trevor Griffin said that the single tree outside the property of his house is a medium sized gum tree. “The tree is on a nature strip separated by a footpath from the property boundary,” he said. “Council has pruned the tree on previous occasions. “As with any tree there is some leaf and bark litter but it’s not considered to be excessive. “Council is not proposing to remove the tree at this time but will arrange a further inspection and additional pruning as a result of the resident’s concerns.” The Cranbourne man said he has wrecked his lawn mower during an attempt to mow the

lawns and said the issue has continued for more than five years. “It’s a joke,” he said. “I just don’t understand, because it’s dying, they won’t remove it.” Mr Colthup said the leaves and bark from the tree not only cover his lawn, but block the road’s guttering as well as his driveway. He said he felt as though the council was laughing at him and his wife who is also very distressed about the situation. “Pull it out and plant another one. “I understand it’s the environment but it’s just a tree,” he said.

A PEARCEDALE man has faced a number of charges after an incident in Clyde Monday morning. Police said the 25-year-old has been charged with burglary and theft of a motor car, as well as driving offences after an incident earlier this week. He has been charged and bailed to appear at the Frankston Magistrates' Court on 1 June.

Drive through crime spree arrests in Cranbourne By BRIDGET SCOTT and ANEEKA SIMONIS TWO Cranbourne men have been arrested and charged in relation to the theft of three luxury cars from a Berwick car yard last month. On Saturday 21 February, a 22-yearold man was arrested by members of the Casey Crime Investigation Unit over the theft of a car and armed robbery. He was bailed to appear in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 13 May. On Wednesday 25 February, 30-year-

old Corey Hayes was arrested in Cranbourne in relation to the incident and several other offences. He has been remanded to appear in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 11 June. The charges follow the theft of an Audi wagon, Holden HSV Club Sport and Mercedes sedan from the Berwick car yard on Friday 6 February by three men who drove one of the cars through the windows of the car yard’s empty showroom to make their escape. The Holden was found hours after

the incident and the Audi A7 was found abandoned in Cranbourne on Saturday 7 February. The $65,000 black Audi was then towed to a secured car yard but thieves broke into the yard and stole the vehicle again. It was later used in relation to a crime spree which included thefts, burglaries, a police pursuit and an armed robbery in Carrum Downs in the early hours of Wednesday 18 February. The incident took place hours after the same car was used during two overnight

burglaries in Dandenong and Hallam as well as multiple police pursuits in the Casey, Frankston and Greater Dandenong areas. Police recovered the car which was found destroyed two days later in a Frankston quarry. It is believed the Mercedes sedan is still missing. Investigations into the armed robbery, burglaries and thefts are ongoing. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visitwww.crimestoppers.com.au.

A HOLDEN Commodore was stolen from the garage of a Cranbourne West home last weekend. Between Friday 27 February and Saturday 28 February thieves entered the garage of the house along Gwen Road and stole the station wagon. The $2000 vehicle was later located about 2am on fire in Tyabb.

House raid POLICE were called to a house in Grantham Crescent, Berwick, on 17 February after raiders poured bleach on the carpet throughout the house and written offensive words. Police do not believe anything was stolen. Information to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Letters Appalling priorities IT IS absolutely appalling that Casey councillor Wayne Smith was approved yet another ratepayer funded trip to the United States to pick up new tips on tackling graffiti (Graffiti Lessons, News, 19 February). This one is estimated to cost ratepayers $6500. How many of these trips does he need to take before the issue of graffiti is solved? Meanwhile, Casey residents who have property backing onto parks and reserves still do not receive any assistance from local government to share the cost of replacing damaged old fences. I’m sure Wayne Smith’s flight and accommodation expenses would have covered half the cost of replacing a few fences and possibly have saved a Casey pensioner a fair bit of pension. Clearly these councillors need to get their priorities straight! Janine Paul, Endeavour Hills.

What value life? THERE has been quite a lot in the news in recent weeks about whether or not killer sharks should be hunted and killed. What about convicted drug dealers? Should they face the death penalty? I’m sure we all feel deeply for the two Australians in Bali at this time as it seems more than likely that they will be executed. I cannot possibly know what they and their families must be going through and my heart goes out to them. The method of execution is horrific. If they are executed, maybe it will serve as a strong warning to other young people considering dealing drugs overseas. We do not have the death penalty in Australia. Or do we? Thousands of unborn babies face the death penalty in Australia every year. They have done nothing wrong and they have no chance at life. Are their lives of less value than sharks and convicted drug dealers? I just don’t get it. Margaret Kotre, Cranbourne North.

THE reason why graffiti is on the increase is simple - the city does not promote the tollfree graffiti hotline, or email address to report graffiti or that graffiti will be removed at no direct expense to the landholder for free from private, commercial and public property. It is as simple as taking a photo and emailing it via a smartphone to casey@ums.com. au or via a freecall on 1800 826 325 with the location. It is the best policy in Australia. I ask council per head of population what is the number of graffiti reports now compared to say 2008 when we had a different councillors, one in particular, very active on the issue. Has Casey stopped recouping clean-up costs from these vandals? Now that was a deterrent ensuring vandals paid for the clean up of their mess, and reimbursed the city for clean-up costs. Has council stopped taking reports of graffiti? It is obvious no-one is reporting graffiti; it is left for months. Casey looks dirty and is encouraging crime through neglect, the same way New York went after Mayor Giuliani left office and Onkaparinga and Gossnells councils did after key councillors and staff moved on. Promote the graffiti hotline, engage with those on the road like real estate agents, cab drivers, council’s 1000-plus staff, schools, bus drivers, community groups, locals - ask them to report one tag a week. Re- implement the 'if you spray, you pay campaign’ and finally look to local company Tripwire, as an addition to council efforts. This company is successfully working with police in the USA, and apprehending vandals. Casey, only a few years ago was praised as among a world leader and graffiti-free! Look back to what was being done. Nothing has changed with the vandals. They are simply spraying anything they choose. What has changed is Casey Council’s lack of dedication to remove graffiti. Casey has a policy in place that mirrors what other cities suc-

Re: US graffiti lessons A more cost-efficient way of dealing with graffiti would have been for the Mayor of Casey to call for public submissions on how to deal with the problem. Local solutions already exist for tackling graffiti. Why hasn’t the Mayor of Casey given ratepayers the opportunity to recommend ideas for eliminating the problem? Moreover, why didn’t my Four Oaks Ward councillors, councillors Kaplon and Crestani, like the mayor, make an effort to consult with the local community? Councillors have a duty to use ratepayers revenue efficiently. John, via web. envisions a world where women and girls are treated equally to their brothers, husbands and fathers. While there have been many achievements in Australia over the past 20 years – in the last few months alone Rosie Batty was named Australian of the Year and Linda Dessau was named Governor of Victoria – there is still a long way to go. The gender pay gap is at 17.1 per cent and women in the top levels of management are getting paid up to 45 per cent less than their male colleagues. VicHealth’s National Community Attitudes Survey on Violence Against Women, released late last year, revealed some worrying statistics about Australians’ attitudes to gender equality in public life. Twenty-seven per cent of Australians believe that men make better political leaders than women, a 4 per cent increase since 2012. Twelve per cent of Australians believe that when jobs are scarse that men have more right to a job than a woman. And 5 per cent of Australians believe university education is more important for a boy than a girl. VicHealth focuses on preventing violence against women because it is a significant and preventable contributor to ill health. Over the last decade, we’ve built an irrefutable body of evidence on the health impacts and causes of violence against women. Sexist and violent behaviour is learned and it can be unlearned. International Women’s Day is a time to stand up and challenge attitudes which work against achieving equality between men and women. Jerril Rechter, CEO VicHealth.

Push for Clyde police station By BRIDGET SCOTT THE City of Casey Council will write to the State Government to request the creation of a police station in the southern part of the municipality. Councillor Amanda Stapledon raised the motion at a council meeting this week and requested that council write to the Minister for Police Wade Noonan as well as the Shadow Minister for Police Edward O’Donohue and ask that they investigate the possibility of having a police station in Clyde. Cr Stapledon said her motion was based on feedback from the community and partly due to a police rally she attended in Berwick last year. “As leaders in the community, we must advocate for what’s required in the area, she said. She said there was a shortage of police in the City of Casey and “with a population of 285,000, we

need to think seriously about the level of policing. The councillor said she raised it now so that the council views were heard prior to budget deliberations in May. She has asked for something that will cater for the community for the next four years. A spokesman for the Minister for Police, Kosta Pandos said the State Government would continue to work with the City of Casey. “The Government will continue to consult with Victoria Police in relation to appropriate resourcing for the Casey region,’ Mr Pandos said. “While the government determines the overall funding for Victoria Police, the Acting Chief Commissioner is responsible for determining the allocation of resources based on operational need, Mr Pandos said. “Any decisions on infrastructure will be made as part of the normal funding cycles of government.

Jilted axeman goes berserk police approached him in the street outside the property. The police armed themselves before Grant dropped the weapon. The accused told police afterwards he brandished the axe “so I had something to smash stuff with, First Const Davison said. Grant’s lawyer told the court the accused, who suffered 20 years of undiagnosed depression, had drunk six stubbies and 10 cans of full-strength beer prior to the attack. “He went over there to vent his frustrations not to assault her, the lawyer said. A “very sorry Grant had no prior convictions, and worked full-time as a truck driver, the lawyer said. Magistrate Lou Hill retorted: “And he drinks a lot of alcohol? Mr Hill ordered Grant to undergo an assessment for a community-based order.

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A JILTED man drunkenly wielded an axe and smashed up a Hampton Park property where his ex-partner was staying early on Monday to “vent his frustrations“, a court was told. Matthew Paul Grant, 42, pleaded guilty in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court that day to causing about $2050 damage when he chopped into the home’s letterbox, porch fridge and front door as well as his ex-partner’s van sidemirror. Grant was also accused of swinging the axe at the expartner as she tried to block him from the front door. He later denied that allegation to police. The ex-partner’s face was bruised when Grant pushed her to the face, First Constable Tess Davison said. Police prosecutor Davison said Grant was holding the axe behind his back when

A CRANBOURNE woman who raised nearly $16,000 for the United Nation’s World Food Program travelled to Laos this year to see where her money was being spent. Putha Nim, general manager of the Cranbourne KFC, was one of the top fund-raisers in the country, with 624 of KFC’s Australian stores combining each year to raise money for World Hunger Relief. The drive to feed underprivileged families in Africa and South East Asia raised more than $800,000 last year. Putha said she spent a week travelling around the north of

Laos to small rural provinces, and also visited mountain villages, health centres and schools. “We met with province delegates to see what they did, and they showed us cultural aspects of the area,” she said. “It was more about the school visits, how the program worked and where the money went.” She said some people had to travel more than 60 kilometres to access the main town centre. She said it was incredible to see the difference the program made to those involved with it. “We went to a school where the program commenced in 2002 and I saw two boys next to

each other,” she said. Ms Nim said both were 10 years age, but one had only just become involved in the program while the other had done it for a while. “One was a giant compared to the other,” she said. “It’s a good incentive for them to go to school.” Ms Nim said she fund-raised in various ways which involved donations boxes, trivia nights, auctions and more. She said she went overseas with six other Australians and two people from young India. “All the money raised from each individual store goes directly to the fund,” she said. “I think that’s great.”

Crestani guilty By LACHLAN MOORHEAD CASEY councillor Rosalie Crestani has been found guilty of misconduct following last year’s confrontation with the council after she attempted to raise a motion to stop the City of Casey promoting awareness of different sexual orientations. The panel reprimanded Cr Crestani for calling a council staff member a bully during last year’s acrimony and also for sending emails on mass to council staff in relation to her motion. It was these actions, and not the motion itself, which the panel deemed to be in breach of the Local Government Act. It’s believed no other consequences will follow as a result of the finding. Cr Crestani apologised for calling the staff member a bully and said she made the comment after some of her public supporters were asked to leave the council chambers last year. “I also accept the panel’s ruling on my admission that I indeed called a member of senior staff a ‘bully’ acknowledging I was under duress at the time having just been removed from all council committees and sent for investigation,” she said on Wednesday. “Two members of senior staff told my support persons

Casey councillor Rosalie Crestani has been reprimanded for misconduct. to leave or the police would be called. “I maintained my right to have support persons with me and called one member a ‘bully’ and to ‘get away from here’ for insisting my support persons leave. “I apologise for calling this person a bully as I would not want my children calling others names, even if they felt they were being bullied.” The conduct panel heard from Cr Crestani and witnesses for the City of Casey throughout a three-and-a-half hour hearing earlier last month.

Cr Crestani accepted the findings and clarified that she wasn’t being punished for raising the motion originally. “I attempted to defend myself in an email to all Casey staff, some 1300 persons, against alleged allegations that my views are extreme and did so rightfully defending myself under the rules of natural justice but it was still against protocol of council policy,” she said. “As promised, I apologise to my fellow councillors for breaching this policy.“ Casey Mayor Mick Morland said the conduct panel would not take the issue further. “Cr Crestani admitted in the panel that she made a couple of mistakes and she is a working part of the team now and everything seems to be going well,” he said. Cr Crestani’s motion, which she raised in November, sought to stop the council from issuing media releases and to remove signs concerning sexual orientation or the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) community. None of her fellow councillors supported her motion. Cr Morland blocked her repeated attempts to raise her concerns on the issue which Cr Crestani said at the time was an “abuse of process”.

haviour and later arrested two males and a female. The two Pakenham men, aged 29 and 30, were arrested for assaulting police and a 25-year-old female from

Tynong was arrested for assault and later charged. She was bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 18 May and the two men were released pending summons.

SUPPORT HITS A PEAKE

PEAKE Real Estate Berwick’s support for the Casey Relay For Life has been recognised at the 2015 annual Australasian Real Estate Results Awards held at the National Gallery in Melbourne on 16 February. It was the second time the firm had taken out the Community Achievement Category at the RER awards - an event aimed at unearthing some of the most talented agents across Australia and New Zealand. The awards, known as the ARERA’s (Australasian Real Estate Results Awards), recognises members for their outstanding achievements in the real estate industry through 2015, with a strong focus on

service excellence and best practice. The team at Peake Real Estate were finalists in six categories, which included Principals of the year, Rising Star Agency of year, David Wereszczuk in Rising Star Agent of the year, Property Management Team of the year, and Lisa Hearn as Property Manager of the year. Peake principal Marisa Adams said the agency was proud to announce they were winners in the Community Achievement Award for the work they did with Casey Relay For Life. “We are blessed to be part of an extremely generous community, who come together

In for outside quality THE Outdoor Furniture Specialists, Narre Warren, is inviting customers to visit its big showroom and check out the wide variety of quality outdoor furniture. Zaman Fazli of The Outdoor Furniture Specialists said the store stocked everything from wicker to timber, stone tables, aluminium settings, sun lounges, giftware and fountains. “We are part of a national franchise network of 43 stores and we have the biggest show-

room in Melbourne with the widest variety,” Zaman said. “What makes us different from the rest is the quality of our products, the variety of tables and chairs, service and availability of stock and products for immediate pick-up or delivery. “We focus on providing good quality products, service and back-up at a good price. “We mix and match our tables and chairs to suit the cus-

tomers’ lifestyle.” The Outdoor Furniture Specialists has seven staff members, and is currently running a 20-50 per cent off storewide sale from 6 to 9 March. The store is at Shop 16 A, Casey Lifestyle Centre, 430 to 440 Princes Highway, Narre Warren. It is open from Monday to Friday, 9.30am to 5.30pm, Saturday, 9.30am to 5pm, and Sunday, 10am to 5pm. YEAR 10 Beacon Ambassador Denise and Year 9 student Matt from Lyndhurst Secondary College with Andrew McKenzie from Academy of Design at the college's careers speed dating event for Year 9s. 135417

Career peeks By BRIDGET SCOTT YEAR 9 students at Lyndhurst Secondary College took a look into their future yesterday, at a careers event for the entire year level. A careers speed date themed “Looking outside the box”, was held by the school and played host to several people from a variety of industries, including journalism, sport, food

and banking. The event gave the teenagers the chance to explore possible occupations and ask questions to further their knowledge and understanding of what their future might hold if they followed one of these career paths. Trish Chandler, manager of individual pathways at the school, said the kids loved it. “Students were fully immersed in this experience, lis-

tening to guests from the banking, sporting, artistics, food, health and journalism areas,” she said. Year 10 Beacon ambassador at the school Denise said guests were “inspiring because they had worked so hard to get into their career”, while Year 9 student Matt said he thought he would be doing one task only in a job, and didn’t realise he could be doing multiple tasks.

The Outdoor Furniture Specialist’s huge store has a great variety.

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST Breaking bread with foodies

The Carmen Get Fit team at last year’s Casey Relay for Life.

Some fitting help while keeping fit for life By LACHLAN MOORHEAD CARMEN Charlton has made a career out of keeping fit. And now the Narre Warren-based personal trainer is using her business as another source for good, entering a team in this month’s Casey Relay for Life. It’s the fifth year the Carmen Get Fit team will be participating in the relay, having already run several fund-raisers in the lead-up to the event. Carmen has lost three grandparents to cancer and said the cause was dear to her heart. “I personally have only one surviving grand-

parent, I’ve lost three grandparents to cancer,” she said. “And I have quite a lot of friends and family who have battled and some who survived. “I had a cancer scare myself last year. I have a soft spot for all charities, but I’ve more so been affected by cancer, it’s such an unfair disease. “There’s no cure. If anyone can help in anyway, I would encourage them to do so.” Last year, Carmen’s relay team raised $10,000 for the Cancer Council and this year the 70-person strong team is hoping to exceed their record. “Every year, I hold several fund-raising

events, from Boot Camps, to Zumbathons, to movie nights, to trivia nights, to shopping tours, to Amazing Race style treasure hunts, to dodgeball tournaments, to girls night’s in, you name it,” she said. “All of which I donate my time to organising and hosting. I also volunteer at the Relay for Life in Narre-Cranbourne, Pakenham and Casey running a 30-minute Zumba session at each of those events.” The Casey Relay for Life will take place on Friday 13 and Saturday 14 March. For more information, visit www.cancervic.org.au.

TWO renowned authors and TV presenters will take to a different type of stage this month as Matthew Evans and Nick Haddow get set to entertain guests at the next Casey Cardinia Breakfast. The two ‘foodies’ and television personalities will speak at the event scheduled for Wednesday 11 March at the Cranbourne Golf Club. Matthew Evans hosts the popular SBS TV series Gourmet Farmer, now in its third season. Now a Tasmanian resident, the qualified chef owns a small farm where he grows and prepares his own produce. He is the author of nine books on food including Real Food Companion, his autobiography Never Order Chicken on a Monday and The Weekend Cook. Also set to take the stage will be highly regarded entrepreneur Nick Haddow who founded Bruny Island Cheese Co. in 2003. Also a qualified chef, his obsession with cheese has taken him around the world after it all started when he was given a bucket of fresh goat milk. Proudly presented by the Casey Cardinia region, Melbourne Football Club and Monash University, the series is supported by Telstra, Telstra Business Centre Casey Cardinia, the City of Casey, Cardinia Shire Council, the Victorian Government through Small Business Victoria, and media partner Star News Group. City of Casey Mayor Mick Morland has thrown his support behind what will be the first of four business breakfasts for this year. Pennants for Parkers... it’s hats off to Hampton Park Page 42

Having a Field day By JARROD POTTER NOT even a bad day on the pedals can halt the stellar rise of Berwick cyclist Courtney Field. Field, 17, admits she “had an off day” at the recently held Track National Championships, but she’s still on track to race for Australia on an international velodrome. She finished third in the sprint - edged out by Brooke Tucker and Tahlay Christie - and it left an anxious wait for the young speedster to see if she’d still be picked for national duties. Cycling Australia announced the team for the junior world championships last week and to everyone’s relief, on the list was Field, who now gets to prepare to race in Kazakhstan. Earning selection, despite the obstacles along the way, Field was thrilled to get a second chance to race in the Australian colours and try to defend her women’s sprint world championship victory from last year’s competition in South Korea. “I’m actually so happy… I was a bit worried that I wasn’t going to get picked,” Field said. “I hadn’t won that race at the nationals, so I was a bit nervous about it, but everyone has a bad race every now and then and I’m glad that they took my other races into consideration.”

“I just had an off day I think - I had done really well in the other races. “I’m not actually sure what events I’ll be picked for… but as I got second last year and won it at nationals this year, you never know.” Coming in with an international title defence on her mind, Field admits the pressure is there, but she wants to harness it and use the expectation of success to drive her harder in training and on the track. “It’s really exciting actually - it’s a lot of pressure though going into Worlds being reigning junior world champ, but it’s going to be a good experience to see all the girls coming through from all the different countries,” Field said. “I think it keeps you on the ball with training and stuff - as there are always other girls there. “I’ve been through the whole experience before, so that will make it a lot easier - even though we’re travelling a lot further this year.” She’s riding off the beaten path at the moment in rural Western Australia - training up for a second tilt at a junior rainbow jersey. Field is targeting the Adelaide Grand Prix and Winter Track Series as important events leading up to her international return, as she heads to Astana, Kazakhstan in August for the UCI Junior Track World Championships.

When Stars collide, warning shots follow By RUSSELL BENNETT GARFIELD has fired a stunning warning shot across the bow of the likes of Cora Lynn and Kooweerup, securing the prized signature of former Cranbourne premiership star Justin Berry. The livewire forward with a reputation for starring on the big stage has made the switch to Beswick Street after just a year at Mornington Peninsula club Hastings. As soon as word first got around in local circles that Berry would be wearing a Stars’ guernsey this season, rumours about the dollar figure on his contract also started to fly. But Garfield player-coach Ryan Hendy wanted to put those to bed. “Garfield generally doesn’t pay massive money for players, and he didn’t come for the money - he made that clear straight away,” Hendy said. “People might think he did, but I can assure them that isn’t the case. “He’s not here for big cash.” The Gazette understands Berry, 33, agreed to terms with Garfield last week soon after arriving at the club, and that his deal is incentive-based. He’s got a football resume most could only dream of. The former Carlton reserves’ player also had stints at Springvale and Frankston, and on St Kilda’s rookie list. Berry is a multiple-time All-Australian at ACFC (Australian Country Football Championships) level, and is a former member of the VFL Team of the Year.

Former Cranbourne star and new Garfield recruit Justin Berry will be right at home on the lightning fast Beswick Street ground. “You’re probably not going to get a better local footballer than him,” Hendy said, adding that he and Berry had a good existing relationship from their time in the Casey Cardinia (now

Maturing Panthers

South East Football Netball League) competition, and that played a key role in the signing. But Berry may not be the only big-name addition to the Stars’ lineup

this season with Garfield favourite son Lincoln Withers back training at the club. “He wants to finish his career where he started,” Hendy said of Withers, now in his late 30s. “He wants to work with the younger players and just give back to the club.” Withers is known for his intimidating physical presence out on the ground, and that would still be a major factor if he returned this year - despite his age. Hendy said his side needed more pace through the midfield and more scoreboard pressure from the forwards - and both areas had been addressed through the additions of Berry, and Tyson and Darcy Payne. The Stars will also get a full season in 2015 out of John Atwell, and a fitter Hendy. Younger players like Will Collis, meanwhile, have been training the house down. “We believed we were good enough to win it last season but we didn’t gel until later in the year,” Hendy said. “I think we were good enough to beat Kooweerup and we came back hard against them after a slow start. “We missed out on a grand final by two points with a list of 70 per cent of players under 21. “We know what needs to be done to win.” Of Garfield’s confirmed moves so far, Nick Battle is the key omission from last season’s side.

FIVE years to 50 years… however long you can carry on in the beautiful game, Casey Panthers Soccer Club will have a team you can play in. The Football Federation Victoria (FFV) affiliated club based out of Prospect Hill Reserve in Narre Warren, had been a juniors-only club since it was founded in 2001, but found former juniors wanted to continue donning the colours and playing as Panthers in the older ranks. The Panthers introduced senior women’s soccer to great success last season and decided to finish the senior expansion this year with a men’s team. Playing in FFV State League 5 South, the Panthers will be helmed by former junior coach Mark Wells to guide the senior team to the levels of success they had all those years ago in under-12s. “One of the more successful teams we had, I was fortunate enough to coach - which was seven or eight years ago,” Wells said. “We ended up winning the league back then and the next year we came in the top two or three, so we had a couple of good years. Pretty much that group of boys, what they’ve done is they stayed with the club and played all the way though and played under-18s last year. “Of course, they wanted to stay at the club, and the only way they could continue to play was to have a senior team - so the club is very much a community minded club and wanted to look after anyone who wanted to play soccer.” The Panthers made their senior men’s debut two weeks ago in the FFA Cup preliminary rounds, and Casey Panthers rallied to force Noble Park SC to fight to the finish. The higher ranked Noble Park SC held on however to take the 4-3 win and advance, but Wells was impressed with the young and small roster he had at his disposal and their attitude, despite injuries piling up. “We had probably only four players over 21 - the rest of the squad were 1819,” Wells said. “I was very happy with the way we went - I’ve only been looking after them for a month now - and there’s always that concern about how well they will gel together. “We don’t have a huge player base at the moment, so we only had 14 players registered, and to be honest, in the end we ran out of players and that’s why I think we ended up getting rolled. “A couple went off injured and we ran out of legs a little bit, but I was happy with the way we played - scoring goals is the key to soccer and we did that, but we were a little leaky at the back.” The Panthers are still on the lookout for new players - senior or junior, male or female - and if you’re interested in signing up, contact the Panthers via their website www.caseypanthers.org.au or email at caseypanthers@hotmail.com. Casey Panthers’ men will kick off their FFV season on 21 March away against Baxter.

Not all Black for Swans By JARROD POTTER PREMIER CRICKET - ROUND 17 (day 2) CULTIVATING the next generation of CaseySouth Melbourne (209 and 6/98) talent was the aim of the final few rounds as the Swans claimed the 2014/15 Victorian Premier Cricket wooden spoon with a loss to St Kilda (6/341dec). Lewis Mildenhall (108 not out) ravaged the Casey attack alongside Josh Manning (53) and spinning all-rounder James Muirhead (46 not out). Casey’s shining light came from Simon Black (4/82) who claimed wickets to keep the St Kilda batsmen rotating through the wicket. Throwing the ball around, Casey’s young brigade also lined their pockets with overs as Lachie Sperling (1/51), Leigh Diston (0/35) and Rob Fisher (0/36) all savoured their opportunities in the top flight to gain experience. Not much else was on the line as St Kilda comfortably stitched up first innings points with 341 runs against its name after only 77 overs. A quick declaration left Casey to go around again as St Kilda aimed for outright victory. The visitors would get close, but Michael Wallace (39 not

out) remained unbeaten at the end of the season while Shane Maggs (21) and captain Chris Hall (14) kept plugging away up til the final over to stop any further debacle from coming to light. Casey-South Melbourne finished its season with two wins and 14 losses while their best batsman and bowler were one and the same - Daniel Watson 364 runs at 26 and 20 wickets at 24.25. DANDENONG v NORTHCOTE SUCCESS finally greeted Dandenong (238) as it sealed off its season with a resounding win over Northcote (90 and 3/162). Carrying on from Tom Donnell’s 99 last week, this week’s standout effort would come from James Nanopoulos (5/12) - who speared through the Northcote tail after taking the crucial wicket of Eric Ghasperidis (22) - the only Dragon to get off the ground against the Panthers’ attack. Justin Butterfield (3/28) and James Wilcock (2/19) would also line their pockets with Northcote victims as the home side failed to show any tangible fight against the visitors. Sending the opposition back in to bat out their second innings, Dan Doran and his men didn’t

Left: Simon Black was the only Casey-South Melbourne bowler to claim multiple wickets in its Saturday season ender. fare as well after the resumption as Ben Abbatangelo (70 not out) ensured there would not be a repeat of the first innings. Buttefield (2/10) and Adam McMaster (1/26) were the leading wicket takers in the second innings. The last season of Dandenong Cricket Club - before their scheduled merger with HawthornMonash University next season - will not be one for the record books as the Panthers slumped to

a seven-win, nine-loss season, finishing 12th on the Victorian Premier Cricket ladder. A late-season revival boosted the Panthers to 12th, but finals were off the table after a horror start had Dandenong 2-7 before picking up five wins in the second half of the season. Tom Donnell (667 runs at 39.24) and James Nanopoulos (23 wickets at 18.78) led the club’s 1st XI in batting and bowling.

DDCA TURF 1 REVIEW ROUND 11 (One day) HEINZ Southern Districts held on while Hallam Kalora Park was left to wonder “what if?” after winning but going down and ultimately out on percentage. The finals four will clash this weekend as Cranbourne hosts Heinz Southern Districts while Springvale South faces Mordialloc. HEINZ SOUTHERN DISTRICTS v PARKFIELD THE Cobras (8/154) struck to push itself into the finals on the back of lower-order livery against Parkfield (9/151). Trying their best to emulate the Australia v New Zealand World Cup score line on Saturday, the sides struggled to stick at the crease as Joe Wheal (30) was the best of the Bears’ alongside Travis D’Souza (23). Justin Davis (4/45) put an end to any notions of a Parkfield comeback with the bat as he ran through the middle order alongside Paul Stockdale (2/34). After a startling collapse falling to 4/17 on the back of sensational bowling from Nilochana Perera (4/39), the Cobras desperately needed someone to stand up and strike… and that would be the captain Trevor Davies (40). In one of the most aptly described ‘captain’s innings’ this season, the Heinz skipper held off Perera while counterattacking to put a few red leather objects into and beyond the fence. With Rob Davies (29) in tow, the duo turned around the deficit before Ashan Bandaranayake (12 not out) helped the captain finish the job with three balls to spare. Heinz will now head to Casey Fields for the semi-final - as the Cobras booked its place in the finals for the second season in a row. BUCKLEY RIDGES v HALLAM KALORA PARK SPORADIC Buckley Ridges

Jordan Hammond rattled through his overs against Buckley Ridges. 135333 Pictures: JARROD POTTER (7/132) efforts were no match for Hallam Kalora Park (6/134), but it was all in vain as the Hawks failed to qualify for finals. Commencing proceedings with a 57-run opening stand, Jayson Hobbs (28) and Anuj Dal (25) impressed early but fell one after another as Hallam surged. Amila Perera (4/12) was the chief destroyer as he rattled off four scalps, but the rearguard knock of Steven Sheedy (29 not out) prevented a complete collapse for the Ridges, who batted out their overs. Led by Ben Hilliard (42) at the top before cameo innings from Leigh Booth (34 not out), the Hawks chased down the tally with four overs spare. Hallam’s season comes to a stop in fifth place while Buckley Ridges ends its campaign in 10th. BERWICK v CRANBOURNE SEEMS 113 runs were never going to be enough to stop Cranbourne’s (6/115) march into the finals as Berwick (113) was left to wonder “what if?” on another finals-missing season. In fits and starts Berwick batsmen would get their eye in before succumbing to the likes of Shaun Miller (3/9), Cam Dinger (2/27) and Cam Kelly (2/20). It gave Steve Spoljaric (6 not out and 1/15) and Te Ahu Davis (29) a good rest from extensive bowling duties ahead of

the finals campaign this month as the youngsters stepped up and impressed. Berwick could not find enough willing bodies to step up and defend as Ryan Williamson (19) and Lachlan Lawrance (14) - the under-17s/Turf 3 all-rounder who forced his way into the firsts on his strong form - showed there is a lot on offer for the future at the Bears, but had to rely on the wisdom of Ryan Crawford (21) to meter out the heavy lifting. Jordan Cleland (40) all but took the match away from Berwick with a stand-up knock from the top of the order. After a middling year with the blade never venturing past 35 until the weekend - Cleland made sure his best form was on the board when it counted. In tandem with Davis and Dinger (13), the Eagles flew through the chase to maximise their percentage and knock aside any hope of Berwick sneaking into the finals. Jarrod Goodes (3/36) continued to power through his overs while Jake Campbell (2/38) found something on offer in his Turf 1 debut. Berwick slides to seventh improving from 10th last season - while Cranbourne maintains its top-of-the-ladder billing ahead of the semi-final against Heinz Southern Districts.

Quiet, says Parrott

Round 13… unlucky for some

By RUSSELL BENNETT

By JARROD POTTER

WEST GIPPSLAND CRICKET ASSOCIATION REVIEW - ROUND 14 (DAY 1) CARDINIA player-coach Simon Parrott admitted both the Bulls and Seagulls were particularly quiet out in the middle on day one of their clash on Saturday. It was like the calm before the storm. The Bulls finished the day well on top, having dismissed Tooradin for just 127, and sitting on 0/16 at stumps. Their bowling attack, from top to bottom, was outstanding - as it has been for much of the season. It’s probably the biggest reason they remain undefeated at this late stage. Brayden Browne (3/26), Travis Welsh (2/13), Travis Wheller (2/20) and Dean Henwood (2/27) were the multiple wicket-takers, while the attack as a group only conceded three wides. The Bulls know how to pile on the pressure on their home deck they know exactly where to bowl and to what fields. The key for them now is remembering this when they face the Seagulls again at the same venue in two weeks - finals time. Ben Darose (7 not out) will resume this week at the top of the Bulls’ order with Daniel Strahan (9 not out) - a deliberate move to get the former some more time at the crease ahead of the finals. “Look, we respect Tooradin extremely highly but we’re very focussed on ourselves,” Parrott said. “It was pretty quiet out there on Saturday but I think both sides know that the verbal between us doesn’t work.” While he said “it would be nice” if his side went through the homeand-away season undefeated, Parrott added “no one will remember you did it if you go out in a semifinal”.

Jess Mathers went wicketless on Saturday but he’s led the Merinda Park attack brilliantly all season and will look to do the Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS same in the finals. 135252 With just 112 runs left for victory this week, and a full day to get them in, the Bulls are almost un-backable favourites to finish undefeated heading into next week’s game. But they’re not taking anything for granted. “They’ve got some clear matchwinners who know what it takes to win premierships,” Parrott said of

the Gulls. Meanwhile at Emerald’s Chandler Reserve base, Bombers skipper AJ Walker was again one of the only shining lights for his side in its 210 against Merinda Park. He drew high praise from Cobras player-coach Jamie Smith for his hard-hitting 94 but things could have been oh so different if

a straightforward chance didn’t go begging in the field when he was yet to get off the mark. Still, the Cobras are taking some strong form into the business end of the season, having just defeated Tooradin at the Snake Pit and they’ll resume on Saturday on 0/41 after just nine overs. Smith praised his side’s whole attack - particularly Premier skipper and co-coach Danny Diwell (1/14), Craig Boswell (2/28) and the unlucky Jess Mathers (0/62 from 22 overs). But, testament to the Cobras’ depth with the ball, Smith, Fairlam, Caleb Boswell and Daniel McCalman also picked up wickets. Smith said this round was the first all season that the Cobras had their ideal side all playing together and now it was a matter of hitting their straps right at the business end. In the other local Premier clash of Round 14, the Maroons are well on top in the last Beaconsfield derby for the foreseeable future. Frustratingly typifying their season, Chris Savage’s men saved their best for last with the willow - turning in a stellar performance from the top of their batting line-up to the bottom. Savage won the toss and elected to bat, with his side eventually dismissed for 298 in 77 overs. All but one of the side’s batsmen reached double figures with Savage (66), Robert North (45) and young gun Jack McHale (40) leading the way. McHale, an under-17s player, was particularly impressive with a career-best innings. In District division, meanwhile, Devon Meadows (180) is in the box seat after day one against Nar Nar Goon/Maryknoll (3/42) thanks to a valuable 40 in the lower order from Mick Floyd, the Lyndhurst Vikings (137) are locked in a tight battle with Clyde (2/39), and Cranbourne Meadows (8/204) are well on top against St Francis Xavier (3/57).

Hopes dashed courtesy of penalty move By JARROD POTTER FFA CUP - Round 2 IT ALL went pear-shaped for Dandenong South as it bowed out of the FFA Cup campaign with a four-goal loss to Melton Phoenix. FFV State League 5’s reigning premier was put on the back foot early as Melton Phoenix found its way through the defences to take the lead in the opening five minutes. Dandenong South dictated play entirely from that point on in regulation time - peppering the Phoenix goals with dozens of strikes. A spree of second-half chances went begging as strikers Vendurim Mustafai, Neil Baki and Malik Sulemani failed to take their chances from inside the box. The home side continued to charge at the Phoenix defence and it looked like the equaliser, and potentially a go-ahead goal, was inevitable rather than hopeful. Striker Sulemani was the first to err as he was sent from the field after kicking it away after the whistle. With time ticking down and only 10 men on the field, the equaliser was finally found as Taulant Mane lobbed a shot over the keeper before ramming it home to level the ledger 1-1 and force extra time.

From there it was mathematical for Melton as it romped in three extra goals to boost the margin and their confidences ahead of the third round. Hampton Park United Sparrows were the only City of Casey/Greater Dandenong area team to escape the second round, with a 3-2 win over Spring Hills. Harrisfield Hurricanes - the beneficiary of last week’s clash of socks controversy - didn’t have the same luck against Old Scotch, downed in extra time 4-2. That was the same margin for Lyndale United as it suffered a two-goal defeat against Kings Domain.Yarraville rolled Doveton 3-1 in extra time, Maribyrnong Greens thumped the living daylights out of Parkmore 9-0 and Sporting Whittlesea comfortably eliminated Noble Park 5-2.

Above: An attempted bicycle kick from Dandenong South's Valiant Mucaj failed to find its mark. Right: Malik Sulemani works his way through the Melton defence. 135335 Pictures: JARROD POTTER Some sensational goal-work from Dandenong South kept the home side in the clash throughout the first period of extra time, but even their best efforts would soon be quashed. A handball call inside the box resulted in a Phoenix penalty, which was put

FFA CUP - VICTORIAN PRELIMINARIES ROUND 3 FIXTURE top left and with that effectively an end to Dandenong South’s hopes. A second yellow card also went to Bujar Thaqi as he also kicked the ball away after the whistle, leaving Dandenong South with only nine men on the field.

VSDCA - Round 12 (day 2) ONE step left to go for Noble Park (196) as it retained its place in the final six for now with victory over Box Hill (120). At 1/0, after Rizan Mawzoon (1/12) trapped James Lang (0) for a goose-egg, the visitors responded strongly through Sebastian Mather (23) and Gaurav Parikh (21) before Marasinghe Perera (3/26) decided 615 runs wasn’t enough for his stellar season so far. Perera stuck a mitt out to dismiss Parikh before picking up a couple in the lower order to push his wicket tally to 25 this season as his Val Holten Medal odds would have shortened yet again. Rob Johnston (4/27) made his presence felt through the middle order - taking the vital scalps of Box Hill skipper Paul Gloury (16) before ending the Mustangs’ breakaway as Tim Blake (31) holed out on his bowling to Ash Perera. One more win for Noble Park will secure its spot in the finals, otherwise it will rely on a pair of losses from Box Hill, Endeavour Hills or Bayswater to retain its place. ENDEAVOUR HILLS v MOUNT WAVERLEY LAST chance is up for grabs this week for Endeavour Hills (154), following its narrow loss to Mount Waverley (208). In a frustrating day for the Eagles, the visitors managed to get start-after-start at the top of the order as Zach Allen (29), Dayle Olson (23) and Thomas Hafil (13) got out of the blocks but failed to finish it off. Justin Merlino (39) was the next to stand up and defend the crease, but his resistance was brought to an end at by Milan Fernando (3/30) - who bowled a stunning 15 maidens in his 26 overs. The tail showed no wag as Endeavour Hills lost 5/10, the last four of which falling with the score locked on 154. Former Keysborough/Hallam Kalora Park allrounder Alex Deuchar (6/23) was the difference maker for the home side as he rattled off six wickets in his 14.5 overs to run through the Eagles’ order. Its final fight will be against Kingston Saints this weekend as Endeavour Hills requires a win plus losses for two of Noble Park, Box Hill and Bayswater to slink into the final-six. History well made HAMPTON PARK BOWLS ON A very noisy green with plenty of encouragement, history was made on Saturday as two Hampton Park teams had home finals. The Parker’s bowlers going one better as both teams won. Division 2 played a determined Mordialloc for the right to play more finals. It was only a seven-shot win but the last two end results were the same as when the two clubs played in Round 14. Warwick Hardy and his team, Steve Barnes, Chris Hendrie and Andrew Brandolin held the honour of the win, and as they did at Mordialloc, scored six shots to clinch a 14-16 victory. Two rinks drew 20 each, Mort Smith, Neville Hendrie, Sean McDonald and Ken Cobden and Shane Hardy, Mark Paton, Larry Simpson and Zak Storm, while Geoff Ampt, John Nunan, Shannon Micallef and Shane Collins went down 16-17. Result: Hampton Park (1) 14-80 d Mordialloc (1) 4-73. Division 4 played Keysborough with an eye on promotion to Division 3, and were successful. Heather Naismith, Richard Pallett, Rob Woff and Ron Beverly were winners, 30-20, while Chris Barnes, Jen Sherry, Stan Hatch and Peter Hayden won 29-18, and Aaron Ottaway, Tracey Storm, Denise Eastick and Helen Lambert won 23-21. Vince Kovacic, Jim Westwell, Ellen Smith and Geoff Ladner went down 14-22. Result: Hampton Park (2) 16-96 d Keysborough (2) 2-81. Both teams then had to front up on Sunday for the next round of finals. SUNDAY Hampton Park bowlers rewrote their own history again with Saturday’s wins when both Division 2 and Division 4 won their sectional finals. Playing at Cranbourne, Division 2 had an all too expected last man standing fight against nearest rival Narre Warren, and the result was an 11-shot win to the Parkers. led by Chris Barnes, Jen Sherry, Stan Hatch and Peter Hayden, who led 14-1 after the first 12 ends to win 23-10. Aaron Ottaway, Tracey Storm, Denise Eastick and Helen Lambert won 17-14 while Heather Naismith, Richard Pallet, Rob Woff and Ron Beverly won 18-16. Vince Kovacic, Jim Westwell, Ellen Smith and Geoff Ladner lost 15-19. Result: Hampton Park (2) 73 d Chadstone (1) 59. Both teams are now promoted to their next Divisions. MIDWEEK The season of Hampton Park’s midweek Division 1 team came to a sudden halt on Tuesday. Playing at home against Clayton, the Parkers were no match for the other finalist. Geoff Ladner, Chris Hendrie, Andrew Brandolin and Ellen Smith were the only winning rink, 21-18. While Jim Westwell, Shane Collins, Peter Hayden and Neville Hendrie lost 14-24 and Geoff Ampt, Ann Westwell, Helen Lambert and Denise Eastick lost 15-27. CRANBOURNE RSL BOWLS IN THE first midweek pennant final Cranbourne RSL easily defeated Burden Park at home to progress to the grand final against the second placed team Pakenham. The grand final was held at the Waverley Golf and Bowls Club where Pakenham gained the upper hand for a welldeserved victory. Result: Pakenham 69 d Cranbourne RSL 51 Pakenham proved too good on the day winning by 18 shots. The scores were close at the lunch break but while the RSL faltered, Pakenham handled the pressure better, and ran away with the pennant. Congratulations go to Pakenham who were a good team all year and the team Cranbourne bowlers knew they would have to beat if they were to win the division pennant. The Cranbourne RSL team still had a great year winning 16 of 19 games in their first year in the midweek pennant.

Either a wave to the camera or a signal for two more laps left to go, Beaconsfield Primary School's Iron Man team blasted its way around the course. 135331

Blood sweat and... wheel dedication NOT even the clouds ahead could threaten the oncircuit action at Casey Fields as a record breaking 68 teams took to the criterium for the first round of the 2015 Victorian HPV Series. Many categories battled tightly for their respective titles throughout the duration of the sixhour endurance trial. Platt Racing riders were keen to try out their new 2015 trike and proved successful, taking out the elite category win - as well as breaking the lap and distance record - finishing on 177 laps, ahead of Toothless from Wattle Racing on 170 laps, and Taipan from Instinct Racing on 163 laps. Another constant battle throughout the day was in the Open Secondary Class showdown between St Margaret’s/Berwick Grammar School’s Perzeus and Asphalt Melter from Woodleigh College. Perzeus finally pulled away to finish on 145 over Asphalt Melter on 142 laps. With constant leader changes in Senior Secondary Class, it was Intrepid from Girton Grammar School that emerged triumphant on 138 laps, one lap ahead of previous 2014 series winners Fire Breathing Rubber Duckies from EDEC and Horton from Drouin Secondary College on 120 laps. Emerald District Education Centre’s Gremlins Too (Middle Secondary), and Miss Janey of Maiden Gully Primary School (Junior Secondary) claimed the other division titles in the Secondary bracket. Leading the Female Class with their brand new vehicle, Pegasus, the top girls’ team from St Margaret’s/Berwick Grammar successfully defended their title after a strong finish on 134 laps - it’s sixteenth consecutive race win in the series division. Second place went to EDEC’s Gremlins, finishing on 110 laps, while The Hulk from Frankston High School finished on 109 laps. T2 from EDEC took out the Community Class category win on 166 laps finishing ahead of Whipstick from Wattle Racing on 155 laps, while first time interstate entrants Relentless Racing (SAWAVIC) finished third on 153 laps. In the Veterans, G2 Flyer from G2 Racing finished on 147 laps, only one lap ahead of PUDS Racing. Third place went to Scorpius from St Margaret’s/Berwick Grammar School, after knocking in 136 laps. “It was a privilege to lead and work with such a dedicated team and committee in order to put on a fantastic first event on the racing calendar this year,” club president Nathan Boon said. Mr Boon passed on his congratulations to all the teams and competitors and was eager to see them return to Casey Fields for future events on the 2015 Victorian HPV Series calendar. The next event in the series is the Wonthaggi 24 Grand Prix on 20-21 March.
