Fix fallout CHANGES slated to “black spot” intersections in the Southern Downs have received mixed reviews, with one publican questioning the need to ban parking near the corner of Guy and Pratten streets, Warwick. Jason Worth said his pub, The Sovereign Hotel, could be adversely affected if customers were unable to park outside the establishment,
which resided at the intersection. “Everyone likes to be able to park as close as possible to where they are going,” Mr Worth said. “(The intersection) gets busy around school time because of St Mary’s up the road, but other than that, it is pretty quiet.” Mr Worth, who has been the owner of the long-standing watering hole for five years, acknowledged

seeing about half a dozen accidents at the four-way crossing during his tenure, but claimed the installation of stop signs 18 months ago meant it had been “pretty good since then”. The intersection is among nine nominated black spots across the Southern Downs to be upgraded with funding from a targeted Commonwealth Government program. Maranoa MP Bruce Scott made the announcement last week, pledg-
ing $663,400 to make notorious roads in the region safer. Under the planned changes at the Guy and Pratten streets intersection, $44,600 will be spent to install centre line marketing, ban parking near the intersection, remove sight impediments and replace give way signs with stop signs, with the latter already completed.

Fix fallout from blackspot upgrade plan Other junctions in Warwick, including the Grafton and Wantley streets intersection, the Dragon and Fitzroy streets intersection and the Pratten and Tooth streets intersection, will have parking removed. Mr Worth, who was unaware of the changes before speaking with the Free Times, said it would have been nice to have been consulted. He said whatever happened, he hoped any parking changes would be well sign posted and advertised in advance to avoid any unwanted fines. “That would be an expensive beer,” he said. All modifications will be delivered during the course of the 2015’16 financial year. Proposed changes: $44,600 to install ‘Stop’ signs and centre line markings, ban parking near the intersection and remove sight impediments at the Guy/ Pratten streets intersection, Warwick.

THE Sandy Creek Bridge is set to receive a timely facelift. As part of the Federal Government’s Bridges Renewal Programme, the timber bridge on Sandy Creek Road will be replaced by a 30-metre long, six-metre wide concrete bridge, Maranoa MP Bruce Scott announced last week. “It was an old, load-limited bridge and this $780,000 Federal Government funding injection will help to improve the bridge’s safety for families on the school run and motorists touring the region,“ Mr Scott said. “I’m delighted to be working with the Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC) on this project and this bridge’s upgrade will go towards creating jobs in the region.” Meanwhile, SDRC last month welcomed its third quarterly payment under the Commonwealth’s Financial Assistance Grant programme. Council received $1,761,744 to spend at its discretion on local priorities such as infrastructure, health, recreation, environment, employment and road projects. “I’m looking forward to seeing councils target local priorities with this funding, along with additional funding provided by the Federal Government under the Roads to Recovery, Black Spot and Bridges Renewal programmes,” Mr Scott said. “During this financial year alone, councils in the electorate are set to receive a total of more than $127.3 million during this financial year alone.” Full details of the allocations to councils under the Financial Assistance Grant Programme are available online atregional. gov.au/local/assistance/index.aspx

Costly tourism move opposed A SOUTHERN Downs regional councillor has slammed the proposal to form a single tourism entity for the Southern Downs Region. At the council’s February 2015 General Meeting, Councillor Jamie Mackenzie again opposed the formation of one tourism entity for the Southern Downs Region. “One tourism entity has been suggested several times before but not adopted to date because council cannot afford it, Cr Mackenzie said. “There are better options that we did not get to table at council. “Council annually contributes $500,000 towards tourism at present. “So far, one new entity means $370,000 goes on higher staff costs before funds are found for office set-up, events and promotion campaigns. Perhaps, supporters of one entity may have a different view knowing a new special tourism levy, general rate
Christopher McCosker, with his grandfather Alf Howard, prepares for the Year 7 student's World's Greatest Shave.
Christopher braves scissors for Grandpa By TANIA PHILLIPS SCOTS PGC College Year 7 student Christopher McCosker needs a haircut. Usually one for short hair, he is currently sporting a much longer “do and hasn’t seen a barber or hairdresser since way before Christmas, but don’t worry it’s all for a good cause. Christopher is about to
take part in the Leukaemia Foundation's Worlds Greatest Shave and will have his hair cut in front of the whole school at assembly on Friday 13 March. By then, he hopes to have raised $1000 for the cause - a cause that is close to his heart. His maternal grandfather Alf Howard has been having a rare blood cancer. His mother Cathy says her parents
have been receiving amazing support from the Leukaemia Foundation during her father’s treatment. If you would like to help, go to the Foundation’s Worlds Greatest Shave website and search for Christopher’s name. The school will also hold a casual Thursday the day before Christopher’s shave with all money going to the foundation.
rise or increased borrowings in the 2015/’16 budget will pay for it? “We have struggling residents, businesses and farmers paying thousands of dollars in rates. The forced amalgamation into one tourism entity in my view means more local taxes are needed to cover the extra staff, more cars, more computers, more miles between Warwick and Stanthorpe, more office space and more parochialism with little direct benefit to many of our ratepayers, Cr Mackenzie said. “I understand that there is not overwhelming support for one entity across the region, especially as it will duplicate the role of Granite Belt Wine and Tourism, Cr Mackenzie said. “The decision effectively wipes out funds of $180,000 for Stanthorpe’s Granite Belt Wine and Tourism from July this year. “I am thankful for the TEAM tourism report, the various consultative committees and feed-
back from many tourism stakeholders to date, Cr Mackenzie said. “Those consulted were divided over one or two entities, but we received the same message over and over again: more area promotion campaigns of the Southern Downs Region are wanted immediately. “In my view, we could have stuck to current budgets and redeployed spending to achieve greater area promotion. I cannot be positive about a new entity that potentially means more staff, less output and is not funded yet especially when there are better choices. “We did not get to consider an alternative to one new entity whereby local visitor information centres are run separately by local groups in each community. More and more these days, council staff are overtaking these roles and we wonder why the rates go up and the council debts get bigger, Cr Mackenzie said.
Salmonella cases on the rise WITH the fallout from contaminated frozen berries still on many locals’ minds, public health officials are warning residents to take extra care with foods that contain raw or undercooked eggs after a recent spike in reported salmonella cases in Queensland. In 2015, until 17 February,
there have been 1256 cases of salmonella notified in the Sunshine State, which is 2.6 times more than the average over the last five years. The number of notified salmonella cases for the Darling Downs Public Health Unit region is slightly lower at 1.9 times more than the average
year to date figures. Darling Downs Public Health Unit director Dr Penny Hutchinson said examples of food that used raw or undercooked eggs or egg products included mayonnaise, aioli, custard, cheesecake, eggnog, deep fried ice-cream and mousse.

Swimmers are uplifting HALFWAY there but still going strong - that’s the message from the people behind the plan to put a hoist in at the Warwick Indoor Recreation and Aquatic Centre. A swim-a-thon held at the pool at the weekend raised more than $3000 and with donations from other events organisers hope to have about $5000 in the coffers toward the muchneeded hoist. Organiser Frederic Mayer said about 400 people took part through the day in Saturday’s event to raise money for the hoist which will enable local disabled community members to get in and swim laps. He said while swimmers can currently access the teaching and hydro-therapy pools, the main pool is out of reach. The hoist has to be made overseas and is expected to cost between $9000 and $10,000 depending on the strength of the Aussie dollar. While this was the main fund-raiser at this stage, all money raised from the Tuesday and Thursday morning squads is also going towards the hoist and donations are still being taken.
Raising money from the 'Guess the Weight' were Moniques Foster, Josh Borg, Chris Neideck, Heidi Adams and Hazel Adams.

TOOWOOMBA Hospital Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Team members are rallying together to encourage all Indigenous women to book in for a free breast screen. “Ladies, if you are over 40 then you should be having a free breast screen every two years,” health worker Gail Capewell said. “There’s no shame in having a breast screen, it’s quick, all the staff are very friendly and a female health worker from our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Team can even come along for support.”
BreastScreen Queensland Toowoomba Service offers group bookings for ladies who would like to come along with their mums, aunties and sisters. Health promotion officer Jessica Hobbs said there was no time like the present to book in for a free breast screen. “When it comes to breast cancer, early detection is the best form of defence,” she said. “We know that one in eight Queensland women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their life, and of those, 90 per cent will have no family history of breast cancer.
“So if you are over 40 and haven’t had a breast screen yet, book now. The service is free and you don’t need a doctor’s referral.” BreastScreen Toowoomba Service is operated by Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service, which is located at Toowoomba Hospital. Appointments are available from 8.30am to 5pm weekdays; 8.30am to 7.30pm on the first Thursday of each month; and 9am to 12pm on the second Saturday of each month. The Mi Start Southern Downs Migrant Workshop is free and will offer tips and facts on how to start up a small business in Australia. Participants will meet other local business people and organisations from the Southern Downs who can help them along the way. The workshop will offer practical ideas to help them succeed and afford them the opportunity to network with other migrants starting a small business. One of those who will be on hand to chat to participants is Gaby Lobaton. According to Gaby starting a new business is not unlike taking an adventurous trek to Peru’s Machu Picchu, with the qualities needed to ‘reach the
Gaby hard at work. gold’ being similar: optimism, resilience, creativity - and a backpack full of tools and resources to avoid the pitfalls and last the distance. She is well equipped to talk about both experiences. Gaby is from Peru and she is the co-owner, with husband Clayton Haynes, of the successful Pure Inca business in Palmerin Street, Warwick. Here, Gaby showcases exquisite Peruvian clothing and accessories that she imports directly from hand-
picked artisans in her home country - ensuring that all items are ethically sourced, and without the presence of ‘middle men’ that can add layers of cost and reduce the payment to the artisans themselves. Alpaca clothing, organic pymg (cotton), semi-precious and organic jewellery and vibrantly coloured shoes bedeck the colourful store. When Gaby is not busy greeting customers and managing her import business, she picks up the tools of her trade and weaves her own magic with elegant hand made jewellery pieces. Gaby and Clayton’s business is a real success story, and they have learned a lot along the way. In 2010, they began selling their wares from market stalls across south east Queensland. They visited festivals, including Warwick’s own Jumpers and Jazz in July, which made a huge impression on them. The next stage of the business was in shopping centres across the region until finally in 2013, they hung the Pure Inca shingle up at Warwick and haven’t looked back.
“We have customers that first met us at Jumpers and Jazz, they really like the products, so they come back to Warwick again and again just to visit the store,” says Gaby. Warwick is a long way from Peru, and the business culture is very different here too. “In South America, I could simply start up a stall and begin to sell my products,” explains Gaby. “But here, I learned I had to get licences, insurances ... . Phew. So much red tape. If you are not prepared for these things, your pricing structure would not allow for it, and you would perhaps not make a profit.” Gaby is now set to share her experiences and knowledge - the ‘pure gold’ - with other budding entrepreneurs from a migrant background. The workshop will be held from 9-2.45pm at Warwick TAFE on Thursday 26 March, lunch will be provided free. For further information, call Mercy Community Services on 4617 7600 or Sue Hamlet on 0427 619 381.

Girls, now that’s a plan
No penalty YOU have got to be kidding! After an horrific motor accident near Stanthorpe last year, the remaining Tenterfield family gets a life sentence with the tragic loss of members (SFT, 26 February) and the culprit, even though she has pleaded guilty to several charges, gets a five-year sentence and ‘could be free in February of next year.’ I ask, where is the justice in that? T. Binskin, Warwick.
perfect opportunity for women to prioritise their well-being and start thinking about healthy lifestyle behaviours that can prevent illness and disease and enrich quality of life. “Up to one third of all cancer cases are preventable with a few simple changes to lifestyle factors. “At the top of our list are eating healthily and exercising regularly, avoiding alcohol, quitting smoking, and staying smart in the sun. “We’re calling on women to take action today to prevent a cancer diagnosis tomorrow.” More information about Cancer Council Queensland, and ways to cut your cancer risk, is available at www.cancerqld.org.au or 13 11 20.

THIS International Women’s Day, Sunday 8 March, the Cancer Council is calling on all Queensland women to create a cancer prevention plan, following findings that thousands of female cancer diagnoses could be avoided each year. Around 3500 Queensland female cancers diagnosed annually are caused by modifiable lifestyle behaviours, such as smoking and too much sun exposure. Cancer Council Queensland spokeswoman Katie Clift said International Women’s Day was a day for women to celebrate their lives by reducing their risk of ill-health. “All Queensland women should create a personal cancer prevention plan, in consultation with their GP and Cancer Council’s 13 11 20,” Ms Clift said. “This International Women’s Day is the

WELL, here we go with a brand-new if slightly light on numbers government, so we can do without a witch-hunt into the previous government’s method of administration. Already there is a whiff of smugness that is unbecoming from within the new ministry. The pages of my local read should not be about the past when the problems of debt are screaming to be heard. Unless and until debt left by the Bligh Government is the only aim of the newly-elected team, they will not be safe from the resting baseball bats. There appear to be plans being made about longwinded studies into this or that so as to alter the laws pertaining to them. So while talk is cheap, time is not. So a few suggestions from the real world to the newly elected. Mining, which has the Condamine River bubbling along; farmers ruined losing the very best of food production from thousands of acres while Australian shops are stuffed with food imported to make people ill. Selling off farms to feed offshore owners, then there is the never-ending drought. Farmers being thrown off their properties, unable to withstand the power of the banks, because of drought. Home to home the cost of electricity is ridiculous. For all my saving it has more than doubled, and please explain why fracking for coal seam gas has been banned in countries overseas but continues here. Then there is the Mental Health Act 2000 that has been reviewed at a great cost because it was found to be written by the pixies and canned, move the improved work that is waiting into law. All that will keep you busy enough without witch-hunting; the people of the great state of Queensland have had
more than enough of the games politicians play, and will mark outcomes with a fail regardless of promises. No-one believes in them anymore and with numbers so tight in the house it will be here today and gone tomorrow. Melba Morris, Allora.
Not good enough BRONYA Schoner, the disqualified driver who was responsible for the road death of a woman (near Stanthorpe) and the wrecking of the life of another, changed her plea to guilty in the face of damning witness evidence at her recent trial. Bronya was quickly sentenced to five years in prison for her crime. However, because of time already served she may be eligible for release in a year’s time. Many might think, as I do, that the sentence is a shocking travesty of justice. What kind of a message does a sentence like this send to those who in the future might be involved in a similar offence? Bronya would be thanking her “lucky stars” that she got off so lightly. A more appropriate sentence would have seen this offender paying restitution to her victims. At the very least she should bear the cost of the dead woman’s funeral expenses, and for the life ruined, she should have to support that victim, financially for the rest of her life. A sentence of this sort would send a strong message to those who, in the future, would act as irresponsibly as Bronya did. Our court and sentencing regime is far too lenient on these offenders. Jay Nauss, Glen Aplin.
Money and madness IF COAL is our future and if it causes carbon monoxide, this is slow suicide for the human race who breathe oxygen to live. Unless we counteract this path of destruction with the planting of millions of trees, bush and green, that will never happen in time if it’s not done now. That would be too intelligent for any government in Australia. If it is not done now it never will be! I have little faith and hope in our Australian governments making intelligent and preventative decisions - I can only see consequences everywhere. Donna Nevin, Killarney.

His humble beginnings in the 1920’s combined with a difficult family life after the age of 2 still didn’t sway him from ever thinking he’d not grown up in a fortunate era. He was lucky to have the freedom to swim in the Condamine and fish for yellow belly and jew. He grew up in a wonderful environment. Our pioneer ancestors chose to live on the Downs for good reason. His education induced him to love reading and to enjoy the English word, to be able to play Cricket, Hockey and Rugby and to be hungry to learn and seek adventure. He had a talent for music as well. He could play any instrument that appealed to him. He could play by ear and could sing a decent tenor tune. His stint in the Navy in the Pacific and around New Guinea on Corvettes during WW11, resulted in him maturing into a thoughtful, ambitious and caring man. His days as a lad ended when he met our Mum, Patricia Redman. They formed a partnership that we as their children absorbed as the norm. The simple life was personified by having good friends, by a love of music, having a good work ethic, being creative and bringing up children in a happy home. In latter years after Mum passed away he became our best friend. I miss our conversations. They were always informative, full of humour and insight. How can we ever hope to emulate his determination and positive attitude during his illness? How could we ever be as humble and thoughtful? He gave his time happily to the community by playing music in The Warwick Thistle Pipe Band and in Old Time and dance bands over the years. He was a good friend to many and his memory will live on as his good name often arises in conversation. I, for one, will thank him every time I ride down a wave at the beach, sing a favourite tune or think I should be practicing the piano. He would love that. We will all miss him in many different ways.

Soldiers for army of green YOUNG people are set to enrich the Condamine catchment’s ecology and community engagement thanks to the rollout of Green Army projects in the Southern Downs, Federal LNP Member for Maranoa Bruce Scott announced on Friday. “The Green Army provides opportunities for young people - aged 17 to 24 - to gain training, experience and explore careers in conservation management, all while participating in projects that generate real environmental benefits,” Mr Scott said. “With its rich, fertile soils the Condamine catchment is one of the most important ecosystems in the Maranoa electorate, especially in the Southern Downs. “This is a great announcement because the projects will not only improve the Condamine catchment’s environmental health, but also will engage young people in confidence and skill-building initiatives to help them be job-ready in the future. “In the Southern Downs, young people involved with the Green Army will restore native habitat, weed, revegetate, engage with landowners and collect catchment data.” The Green Army is a key Coalition Government election commitment and an enormously success-
ful environmental initiative which encourages young people to be involved in their community. “Young people not only earn while involved but also, most importantly, will learn skills and qualifications and will come out of this opportunity job-ready,” Mr Scott said. Southern Downs Green Army projects will occur in Allora, Bony Mountain, Deuchar, Ellangowan, Elphinstone, Emu Vale, Felton South, Gladfield, Goomburra, Karara, Leyburn, Maryvale, Mount Sturt, North Branch, Pratten, Rosenthal Heights, Sandy Camp, Swanfels, The Falls, Upper Freestone and Willowvale. Applications for Round 3 Green Army projects are now open until 17 March. Check out environment.gov.au/ green-army for more Green Army information. Young people interested in joining the Green Army can apply through the appointed service providers. Council News Shiwa sister city representatives tour Southern Downs TEN STUDENTS FROM Southern Downs Regional Council sister city Shiwa (Japan) have spent time at Stanthorpe High School, toured the Granite Belt and attended a civic welcome last week. Mayor Cr Peter Blundell said he was delighted to welcome the 10 Shiwa Junior High School students and three teachers at a special civic reception. Stanthorpe established a formal sister city agreement with Shiwa in 2005 and then re-signed with the Southern Downs Regional Council in 2009. Cr Blundell said the Southern Downs region had formed a strong bond with the people of Shiwa and he hoped to build on that into the future. “Sister-City programs are renowned for increasing understanding and friendship, as well as developing exchanges and co-operation in the ields of economics, science and technology, culture and education. “We have regular visits from Shiwa including 12 visitors last year who were thoroughly impressed with the local wines, the Apple and Grape Festival and time spent talking to locals via interpreter. There is also a student exchange program between Warwick State High School and Kumiyama, a Japanese province near Shiwa. Cr Blundell said the Shiwa Junior High School students stayed with local host families, attended Stanthorpe High School and participated in several excursions including Sutton’s Juice Factory, Granite Belt Dairy and the QLD College of Wine Tourism.
Stormwater Drainage program Stage 2 is underway Southern Downs Regional Council has begun Stage Two of the stormwater trunk drainage system in Glengallan Road, Warwick. Manager Works Construction Eric Kraak said the proposed work will extend the stormwater trunk system to accept stormwater from the existing system in Rodeo Drive and Peregrine Court. “The extension of this system will help to alleviate excess stormwater lows on the roadway in Glengallan Road between Rodeo Drive and the Horsman Road intersection. “To achieve this Council Works Construction crews will install 190 metres of large stormwater pipe and associated access chambers in the footpath on the eastern side of Glengallan Road and connect to the existing downstream stormwater trunk main. The estimated cost of this work is $240,000. “Regrettably to install the pipeline it is necessary to remove some established trees from the footpath. Council considered other alignments in an attempt to avoid removing the trees however it proved impossible due to other constraints, so we will replace the removed trees with other native trees suitable for footpaths as part of the project,” he said. “Council will endeavour to minimise any disruption to residents and traic while this work is underway over the next few weeks,” he said. Works began on February 23 and should be complete by the end of April, weather permitting. Anyone with questions about the works please call Council on 1300 MY SDRC (1300 697 372)

Outback author visits Southern Downs Libraries SDRC Libraries continue their author visit program with the fascinating story of Thea Hayes, a city girl who became an outback nurse in the 1960s. Thea will read part of her story “An Outback Nurse” as well as sign books at Stanthorpe Library (March 12 at 10.30am), Allora Library (March 18 at 10am) and Warwick Library (March 25 at 10.30am). Ms Hayes’ story combines her personal story with some milestone events in Australia’s history. In ‘An Outback Nurse’ Thea explains that she was a ‘real city girl’ and made a very hasty decision to take the job of nurse, hostess and housekeeper at Wave Hill. And then in the mid-sixties the famous walkout by the Aboriginal stockmen provided the springboard for what was to become a long and sometimes bitter campaign for Land Rights. Thea met her future husband and raised four children. She describes the outback as an obsession and the story of her time there was burning to be released. “We look forward to Thea telling her story of overcoming the odds to ind her place in the world. She falls in love with the land and inds love on the land... a story many will relate to on the Southern Downs,” said Principal Librarian Samantha Shelbourn. Vellacott brothers in da house SOUTHERN Downs-based band the Vellacott Trio are doing everything possible to ensure the launch of their first EP is a big success this Friday night, including giving away a gig. The brothers are offering the chance to win their services for a house party, a 21st party, a wedding, or even a backyard barbecue. Band leader and oldest brother Ben said the boys are super keen for one lucky supporter to have their own special event or party as part of the EP launch promotions. “If you’re the winner the band will come along to your
function and make sure your guests are treated to a rocking good time,” he said. “This is a way to say thanks for the support we’ve received so far and, hopefully, it will motivate plenty of live music supporters to come along and enjoy our launch night.” Fans have the chance to enter the gig competition via entries in the Warwick Daily News or by showing up at the launch party and entering at the door. The prize is a three hour gig to be played by 30 November and will be subject to the band's availability and pre-bookings. The gig must be in the Southern Downs local govern-
ment area. Ben said he would have been happy if 50 people came along, but he is starting to enjoy the very positive buzz around the launch party, which could see many more show up to support the brothers. The night will kick off with local favourites Port Paradise followed by Gold Coast band The Flame Fields. Doors open from 6.30pm, with entry just $5. CDs and T-shirts will be available for purchase on the night and for those who can’t make it along to the launch, the Vellacott Trio’s EP will be downloadable from iTunes.

Brad Steeles many a stomach FAMILY brought baker Brad Steele back to Warwick where he grew up, and since then he and his wife have built an award-winning bakery. Gail and Brad returned to Warwick more than eight years ago and have since established Steele’s Bakery Cafe. “Brad being born and bred in Warwick wanted to come back to his home town close to family,” Gail said. “It took about 18 months to find a location and establish the current bakery known as Steele’s Bakery. “In our first year of trading, winning the Best New Business, business excellence award was such a wonderful surprise and gave us reassurance that we had made the right choice opening our bakery.” They now employ 12 people and provide an extensive range of delicious bakery products to their customers, including fresh bread, buns, pies, sausage rolls, sandwiches, slices and cakes. “Customers can either eat here in a relaxed cafe environment or grab something such as a family pie or quiche for an easy meal at home,”

The friendly team at Southern Downs Employment Service.
A boutique provider SOUTHERN Downs Employment Service provides employment assistance to members of the Stanthorpe and Warwick communities who identify as having a disability. Some say they are a boutique employment service provider given they are able to create close partnerships with jobseekers and local employers. They just like to think of them-
selves as a supportive mechanism to bring motivated people together with employers wishing to create an equal opportunity workplace. Southern Downs Employment Service aims to help people gain greater confidence through open employment opportunities and also opportunities to upskill through education and training. Southern Downs Employment Service has placed over 50 jobseek-
ers between Stanthorpe and Warwick over the past 18 months, with a majority of those jobseekers still in paid employment and no longer requiring assistance from Southern Downs Employment or Centrelink. They pride themselves on the professionalism they bring to the community, their jobseekers, local employers and their work environment. They create partnerships with employers as they can negotiate in-

WARWICK East State School believes that a child’s education begins in the home and is continued as a partnership between the school and the home. Warwick East State School has been delivering strongly on its motto of “Only the best is good enough” since 1850 and although strong in tradition, they look to the future with respect to responding to the needs of their students and community. Beginning in Prep, the school believes its task in education is to provide your children with real life, engaging, challenging, intellectually demanding and individualised learning experiences that actively empower them to develop a passion for lifelong learning. A modern, purpose-built early education precinct, which was finished in 2013, provides the perfect environment for teachers to begin delivering the curriculum. The school’s air-conditioned resource centre, housing the library collection, media room, teacher resource and planning room, as well as a whole-class computer lab, provides a spacious and stimulating learning hub for students and staff alike. Embedding information and communication technology skills and multi-media resources into everyday teaching is facilitated through two computer labs, multiple computers in all classrooms, internet connection with data and sound projection in all classrooms. Steeped in history, Warwick East State School is situated on spacious landscaped grounds which include undercover fixed play equipment, a huge undercover learning area, extensive playing fields, multi-purpose court, cricket practice nets and a growing environmental centre.

Beating the skills gap SWQ Training is committed to providing quality training outcomes for their client base, supported by a structured quality management team. The group consults with clients and the training team on a regular basis to identify opportunities for improvement to the training content and operations, to respond to emerging training and skill needs. SWQ is a family-owned Queensland company established in 2006 by Mat O’Shannessy. After recognising the broadening skills gap due to older, more experienced operators being reluctant to pass the skills and tricks of the trade to younger trainees, Mat started SWQ training. They now run a large number of courses including short courses in operating excavators, dozers, front end loaders, rollers, backhoes, graders, scrapers and tractors. Clients include the Easternwell Group, Origin, Energex, Leighton Contractors, Santos and local government. “Our trainers not only teach our trainees what is needed to pass their assessments, they also pass on their own knowledge and skills,” Matt said. He said SWQ train and assess to national standards as well as tailoring the training to encompass a company’s requirement. “We are well regarded in regional Queensland as a quality provider of nationally recognised training courses, apprenticeships and traineeships, heavy machinery, high risk licencing and OHS training,” Mat said. You can find SWQ Training, registered training organisation No 32199, at 46-48 Croft Crescent Toowoomba, or www.swqtraining.com.au or phone (07) 4617 7800.
Total education IN EDUCATING a child, it is important that they acquire the skills to earn a living and participate successfully in economic life. But equally important is their capacity to be able to get on with people, sustain friendships and maintain their dignity and sense of self. “These capacities are developed over time, arising from essential values such as patience, tolerance, consistency and forgiveness,” says School of Total Education Principal, Shane Power. “They are not really taught, but rather, absorbed by the child through the experience of being shown patience, tolerance and forgiveness in a consistent way,” he adds. To achieve this, such qualities need to be modelled by the teachers in an atmosphere that allows for reflection and quietness amid the very active and stimulating setting of school life. They are the foundations for creating an environment where children can be children. A child that can be themselves is happier and more able to learn and get on with others. “At The School of Total Education our focus is on nurturing happy children. Our innovative programs have been serving the Warwick community for over 30 years. Our graduates are a testament to the effectiveness of our philosophy,” Mr Power concluded. A free range education FREE Range Kids Childcare was set up in 2005 with their first centre in Laidley in the Lockyer Valley. The Wallangarra centre was established in 2007 and is part of a group of four long daycare centres and one outside school hours centre - Stanthorpe Cool Kids. The business was set up by the owners because they weren’t satisfied with the quality of care that was on offer for their own children at the time. Free Range Kids Childcare, Wallangarra, now employs 13 staff members and offers long daycare and a kindergarten program for children from six weeks to school age as well as before and after school care. Their slogan is “Old Fashioned Values for Modern Day Kids”. They are great believers in providing children with those “oldfashioned values” that seem to be lost in today’s society. All children are required to address staff as Mr or Mrs and their surname as a sign of respect. The centre has staff sit with children at meal times to role model good table manners. They have three home-cooked meals made on the premises daily, ensuring that there is plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables as well as meat and dairy to provide a balanced, nutritious menu. The centres are also set up to encourage lots of outdoor play, with real grass for children to run around on. They believe that a healthy body promotes a healthy mind. A lot of children these days do

well as bike tracks and wonderful play structures. The centres focus on encouraging positive social skills as well as literacy and numeracy skills so
that children are ready to cope with school once they leave. Free Range Kids Childcare Wallangarra, 63 Barrawell Street, Wallangarra, phone: 07 4684 3685.

Voyage of discovery
★★★★★★★★ ★★★★★★★★
By ROBERT MacMAURICE THIS June is the 188th anniversary of Allan Cunningham’s journey and discovery of the Darling Downs. Allan Cunningham’s expedition travelled from Segenhoe Station in the Hunter Valley to the discovery of the Darling Downs and back over a thirteen week period from 30 April 1827 to 28 July 1827. This was a journey of about 1400 kilometres. He travelled with six men, eleven pack animals and supplies for fourteen weeks. The time he spent in the Southern Downs region can be dated from 5 June 1827 to 6 July 1827. In what follows is a list of places and dates that can be deduced approximately from Allan Cunningham’s journal and report and longitude and latitude recordings and descriptions. Some places he named (not all were adopted), and other names came later. Herries Range Tuesday 5 June 1827 It is on this day that Allan Cunningham and his party came out of McIntyre Brook and up onto the Herries Range and saw a most wondrous sight. They looked across the Condamine River and along a beautiful valley with a chain of ponds now called Glengallan Creek. There had been recent rain and Allan Cunningham noted the extensive pasturage, the richness of the soil and the availability of box and white gums around. It looked like a park. From this vantage point the party travelled through Thane, Greymare and Cunningham. They crossed the Condamine River near Cunningham and kept following Glengallan Creek. Miller’s Valley (Gladfield and Maryvale area) Friday 8 June 1827 Two days of rain set in and so after following along Glengallan Creek the party veered over to other points of interest and camped at Freestone Creek. If he had kept following to the upper reaches of Miller’s Valley, he may have discovered Cunningham’s Gap on this expedition. He also named Mount Dumaresq
ARIES—March 21-April 20 Be sure that the guarantees made now are authentic. More time than planned is spent sifting through legal documents. In romance, intuition is on your side - act from the heart. TAURUS—April 21-May 22 Allow more time for long range financial planning. A loved one has an opportunity to step into the limelight, but is counting on your support. The communication network starts improving. GEMINI—May 23-June 21 The accent is on earning power. Perhaps you should take on a second job at this time. A romantic entanglement needs further analysis. Younger friends provide surprisingly stimulating company. CANCER—June 22-July 22 Investigative work is your forte right now. At home or at work, you are everyone’s favourite detective. More disipline is needed in areas of fitness, diet and self improvement. LEO—July 23-August 22 Home improvement is accented, but bargain hunting is not a strong point - a deceptive trend is at work in this area. Friendship prospects brighten when you take a more optimistic approach. VIRGO—August 23-September 22
Memorial to explorer Allan Cunningham, Cunningham's Gap, circa. 1945. State Library of Queensland. and Mount Sturt and after the rain set out to explore the Swanfels Valley. Logan’s Vale (Swanfels Valley) Sunday 10 June 1827 The party camped about ten kilometres up the Swanfels Valley following the Swan Creek. Sighting Spicer’s Gap Monday 11 June 1827 Allan Cunningham climbed a ridge that rose to about 1,200 metres on the northern side of the upper Swanfels Valley. From here he observed Spicer’s Gap, Mount Mitchell (which obscured Cunningham’s Gap, about ten kilometres, from where he was standing on the southern side), Mount Warning, Mount Double Top, Flinder’s Peak, amongst other features familiar to him from his 1824 explorations of the Moreton region with John Oxley. He did not personally examine Spicer’s Gap, because his exertions, to that point, and ongoing suffering from hepatitis had debilitated him. Instead two of his men went to examine the gap, while he waited in camp to recover, and they confirmed the possibility of passage through to the coast.
Killarney Saturday 16 June 1827 With confirmation of a way to the coast and Brisbane, and realising the need to nurture supplies for the return journey, Allan Cunningham began his southward journey passing slightly west of Killarney. He named this area Canning Downs. Undercliffe Falls Monday 25 June 1827 After camping near Undercliffe Falls in the Wylie Creek and Liston area, he continued journeying south, south westerly and noted the strange formations of granite. He crossed the Great Dividing Range and observed creeks flowing east and west. He also observed Bald Rock. Girraween National Park Tuesday 26 June 1827 At some point the barriers of granite formations were causing such problems with travel progress, that Allan Cunningham turned backwards and crossed features such as Snakebite Creek, Paling Yard creek, Racecourse Creek, Mount Norman Road, Pyramid Road and McLaughlin Creek.
Eukey, Ballandean Wednesday 27 June 1827 Once out of the barriers of the granite formations, that so define Girraween, Allan Cunningham again struck a south, south westerly course and passed near Eukey Hall, Doctor’s Creek, Ballandean, and camped at Accommodation Creek. Upper McIntyre River Friday 6 July 1827 After leaving his Accommodation Creek camp, Allan Cunningham and his party crossed the Severn River, and then the Upper McIntyre River and began to notice country they had sighted on their northern journey as they approached the Gwydir River. With this journey Allan Cunningham had discovered one of the richest farming areas in Australia, along with the Spicer’s Gap access to the Downs, from Brisbane. It was a year later on Monday 25 August 1828, that he approached from the Brisbane side and climbed Mount Mitchell, and so observed the western features he had observed a year before, along with Cunningham’s Gap cutting through beside Mount Cordeaux and his vantage point.
Friends are supportive and you can ask for special favours. Dealings with teachers become less formal. This is a good week for job hunting. If moving or travelling, allow for delays. LIBRA—September 23-October 22 Education is accented and you may be filling the roles of teacher as well as student. A calculated financial risk may pay off by the end of the week. Romance operates on an intellectual plane. SCORPIO—October 23-November 21 The current emphasis is on ideas, but the trick is to put them to work. Money making schemes are on the right track but may require some refinement. Don’t rush into signing any documents. SAGITTARIUS—November 22-December 22 The week ends on a romantically upbeat note, with a loved one accepting your plans, or at least being willing to listen. Surprise expenses may be offset somewhat by an end of the week windfall. CAPRICORN—December 23-January 20 Staying on top of current events gives you the edge at a social or career function. Disputing groups each want you as their supporter. Look to the issues, not the personalities. AQUARIUS—January 21-February 19 Your most trusted friends do not necessarily share your point of view. Financial clouds begin to clear, but don’t rush into any new scheme. Local travel is a highlight of the week. PISCES—February 20-March 20 Try a subtle rather than overstated approach, especially in situations where strong personalities are invloved. Be sure you know your new confidante before revealing secrets. BIRTHDAY THIS WEEK You are adaptable, unpredictable, creative, spiritual, imaginative and vague. Your dreams are big, sometimes unrealistically so. Specialization is the key over the next six months - learn a lot about a little. Romantic uncertainties should clear soon.

NRL Preview
NRL season ready to rumble THE countdown to the NRL 2015 season has been filled with anticipation, excitement and drama but the wait is over. Tipsters are nervously asking if they are ready to take on the challenge of another season. Fans, players, coaches and officials are all unsure how these opening rounds will pan out. From the kick off at Suncorp tonight until the first weekend in October many of us will be consumed by the greatest game of all. Let the fun begin. The Broncos and Premiers, the Bunnies both tasted recent success in the UK. The Bunnies have picked up where they left off in 2014. Already they have the Auckland Nines and World Club Challenge trophies in the cabinet. No Sam Burgess, Ben Teo and John Sutton this season - no worries. Inglis has been handed the captaincy and is setting a great example - already eyeing off premiership 2015. The Wayne Bennett influence has been immediately noticeable at Red Hill. Busy off-season recruitment sees a very different playing roster in 2015. Look for a big performance in the opener from Adam Blair and Ben Hunt. They are relishing the opportunity to work with Lockyer and Langer who are playing a big role at the club
this season. The Broncos pre-season form includes that tough and then bizarre extra time win over Wigan. Positive signs for the Broncos’ faithful. Bennett surprised many announcing Justin Hodges as captain - the first of what will no doubt be many surprises as the season unfolds. Expect some bold moves from the wily Bennett. The Eels are a team on the move. Losing J. Hayne was a blow but forces others to take more responsibility. Impressive signs in recent trial games and Parra are sure to make their presence felt this season. The Sea Eagles have wallpapered over boardroom struggles in recent season but they are beginning to have a major impact on the field. Ongoing drama in the playing group is not good. They have lost their share of players but still have Foran and DCE. In spite of a horror year, the Knights won their fair share of games at the back end of 2014. They are free from ownership dramas and with a new coach; new attitude and some important signings fans will be expecting a good start. Capable of beating anyone if they are on their game. The Warriors - awesome one day, horrendous the next - drive tipsters, fans, coaches, selectors and opponents insane. Have the talent to beat any
team but often prefer to beat themselves. Don’t have a good away record but wins never surprise. The Titans have shattered but have plenty to prove. There have been so many changes players may need name badges to identify each other. The Tigers are the brash new kids on the block. Everyone is expecting big things from this young group under their new coach and they will challenge the top teams. They are overdue for an injury-free season. Out of adversity often comes strength. Look for a bold showing here from the Coast in their opener. The Cowboys are a serious football team. They have a great record at home but need to improve their away record to win the premiership. Good signings in the off-season and will be boosted by the re-signing of Jason Taumalolo. The Roosters were minor premiers in 2014 but were missing the hunger they showed in their premiership year. Blake Ferguson has been impressive in trial games and will be a real asset. Great playing roster. Another good season beckons but the Cowboys should be smiling in Townsville. Teams and tipsters should be wary of the Panthers in 2015. They surprised everyone to still be in the mix when the whips were cracking in 2014 despite serious injuries to key players.
They have an almost unchanged roster combining youth and experience. We will see some exciting youngsters make the transition to first grade this season. The Dogs are sure to be snapping at the heels of the top teams. They have a strong forward pack and have recruited well in the off-season. Brett Morris joins his twin brother at the club after the Dogs lured him from the Dragons Den. Englishman James Graham returns as captain. With new signings and the Blues halves combination they look contenders. The Sharks dive into the season without the baggage that weighed them down in 2014. They have a mix of talent, experience, match-winners and grunt. Ben Barba may provide the X-factor they need in 2015. The Sharks could be the Smokeys in 2015. There was little joy for the Raiders in 2014 and they have lost plenty of big names without recruiting well for the upcoming season. Ricky Stuart’s return to the club has not met with the success they anticipated and now there is a weight of expectation on the club’s favourite son. Can’t see it being a better year for you if you are a Raiders fan. It is a new look Dragons outfit after a big recruitment drive. They im-
pressed in the UK and under coach Mary McGregor there are signs of a change in attitude as well as personnel. This is another club with tension simmering in the boardroom and beginning to take a toll on the playing roster. Fans will be watching closely and breathing fire if they miss the eight again. Melbourne has retained many of their senior players - they form the nucleus of a team that plays a great brand of football. They have tinkered with the playing roster and some fresh faces joining the experienced crew. You can never discount Melbourne and the core playing group start the season in the best shape they have been in for years. The big three Smith, Slater and Cronk are hungry for another premiership trophy before they call it quits. Major Storm warning for all clubs this season - Melbourne will be coming at you. ROUND 1 MATCHES Thursday: Broncos v Rabbitohs Friday: Eels v Sea Eagles Saturday: Knights v Warriors Saturday: Titans v Tigers Saturday: Cowboys v Roosters Sunday: Sharks v Raiders Sunday: Panthers v Bulldogs Monday: Dragons v Storm

Can’t wait for the whistle The
spin With Casey O’Connor email: wickets-stpe@bigpond.com
AS THIS edition goes to press we have only a couple of sleeps until the NRL season gets underway. For many it can’t come soon enough, but before the whistle blows attention will be on the court appearance of some of those caught up in the cocaine scandal. Hopefully those proceedings will not take away from what is sure to be a great season opener at Suncorp. While all of that is unfolding the ICC Cricket World Cup is developing into a fascinating battle. Great to see some of the minnows of the game emerging. How special was it to see Afghanistan win their first World Cup game and the Irish are playing with the luck of the Irish. The game between the Black Caps and the Aussies may not have developed the way many expected - no 400-plus runs in that game - but how exciting was it as Australia almost pulled off a miracle victory. There are almost as many rumours circulating around the Australian captain Michael Clarke as the PM at the moment. Getting almost as much press attention is Daly CherryEvans who is openly shopping for a new club for 2016. Not sure how that works at the start of season 2015. Fans are spoilt for choice at the moment and it is all exciting stuff. As a Broncos fan I’m looking forward to a big year from Brisbane. Trying to select a top eight in the NRL looks tough this year in one of the most open competitions in years. Can't wait - let the fun begin. - Casey LASTING LEGACY MANY people are passionate about their sport or several sports but few leave a lasting legacy Bill Campbell was one such person. His legacy is simply the Morgan Park Raceway precinct. Last weekend at the Short Circuit Motorsport meeting members wore black armbands and paid tribute to a man whose sudden passing shocked so many and is sure to leave a giant hole in the sport. Fred Berge, secretary of the association and a friend of 40 years remembered him as “the brains behind Morgan Park Raceway”. While those at Morgan Park were showing their respect and sharing their memories, Campbell’s grandson, Matt was competing in the biggest race of his life in the Carrera Cup Series on the street circuit in Adelaide. He was sitting in third spot when he was forced to withdraw with a broken radiator. At the time he had posted the third-fastest lap time. Things will take a while to fall back into place at Morgan Park after Campbell senior’s passing but those who are passionate about their motorsport will ensure Campbell’s vision for the raceway continues. NEWBIES SHOW HOW NEW members of the Stanthorpe Golf Club, Sean O’Reilly and Cal Smith, took little time to notch up their first win. The pair combined successfully to take out the Betty Yap Memorial medley 4BBB Stableford sponsored by Greg Yap. Their score of 45 points saw both players contribute equally. One point back was the team of Todd Beckett and Mark McCosker who also combined well for the round, sharing the scoring honours but were left rueing the 11th hole, the only hole where a one-pointer was recorded. Rain at half-time caused some over the pin and pro shots. In the end, Viv Thouard, Tom Fittock, Lyn Ludlow, Dylan Barraclough and Sean O’Reilly each received a ball for winning shots. Quite a lengthy rundown with balls also supplied by the sponsor and most scores of 38 and
Winner of the first race of the day was Picavino, ridden by Emma Ljung.
Winner of race two, Had Me at Hello crosses the line with Kenji Yoshida as jockey. better were awarded a ball until the supply ran out. The start of this new month also sees the beginning of the financial year. Members who are not financial may play in competition but are ineligible to win and can play only for minor prizes. Members are asked to bring their fees up to date prior to teeing off to save disappointment. This Saturday members will play for the March monthly medal and putting competition and the first of three rounds for the Pike Trophy. The medal round is sponsored by long-time supporter of the Stanthorpe Golf Club, Maddies Gift Gallery. Players are asked to note that tee-off is at the earlier time of 11am as there is a private function in the clubhouse commencing at 6pm. GOOD RESULTS IN DISTRICT COMP SUMMIT bowlers tasted success in the preliminary rounds of the District Pairs. In the SDMDBA pairs, three Summit club teams made it to the post sectionals - Dale Barker and Rob Capelli, Michael and Tyler Sweeney and Len Covill and Jamie Zamprogno. On Sunday, at the end of the post-sectional stage the field narrowed to two Summit Pairs teams to play out the final - Michael and Tyler Sweeney will play Capelli and Barker. It will be the challenge of youth up against maturity in the final this Saturday. It was triple treat time at the Summit on Saturday as the crew took to the greens for social games (very social, I hear). Joe Zeppa, Phil (Timber) Davis and Rob (Tightrope) Slack had the wood on Brian (Cocktail) Brown, Trevor (Mr Bionic) Morris and Alex (Mr Prov) Mattiazzi. The result 24-12. The scores were much closer in the game between the grey bomber (Attilio Zamprogno) Martini McGlashan and the big EZ, Eddie Zanatta and the combination of Hollywood Stratford, Rocket Newlands and Keith (deadeye) Mungall. The Big EZ’s mob won 24-21. The all-important bar roster for this week sees J. Shannon on duty on Friday and on Saturday Kurt Empen is in charge. Diary date - 15 March - Downs Diggers Day 9am start - lunch. Please finalise your teams of rinks bowlers together in preparation for this event which is just around the corner. WILLIAMS WINNER GOLFERS at Wallangarra went round in a stroke event on Saturday. The winner with a score of 66 nett was Peter Williams ahead of runner-up Steve Hampstead and Kevin Williams. The pin shot on nine went the way of Hampstead and Green claimed the approach shot. The Wallangarra Club Championships played over four rounds will be held over the coming two weekends. On Saturday the March Monthly Medal will be played in conjunction with a round of this event.
CLAY DAY SUNDAY was another fine day for a clay on the Inglewood Range. Shooters lined up for a down the line shoot. Tom Donald has been showing some excellent form in all disciplines recently. On Sunday he had to pull out all stops to beat off the determined placegetters Steve Bevan and Corey Clark who both shot well. This weekend shooters can test themselves in the single action and rimfire disciplines. PRACTICING NOT GOING UN-NOTICED IT'S been reported that there may be plenty of sly practicing in the early morning at the Warwick Golf Club. Then of course there are those putting in hours in the early mornings, late afternoons, middle of the day, even on occasion around the bar, pretty much anytime. Anyone would think the annual Warwick Golf Club championship is on the horizon. The tension is building and handicaps are cracking, grown men are groaning, and only the courageous steal furtive glances to the gilded fonts on the honour boards and the names of those who have been before them. Great names all of them. And then there’s the chook run ... the Red Rooster Rumble where many a champion has earned his hot chooks. These chooks have kept players heading into Friday’s battle week after week. The battle last Friday was led by Greg Morrisey who carded 20 points, winning on a countback from Dion Phillips. Rundowns to 19. Collecting those sought-after hot chook vouchers from Red Rooster for nearest to the pins were Jeb Jerome (11), Neville Heard (13), and Laurie King (16). Peter Millard broke through for a win last Saturday In the B&K Motors sponsored event against 54 competitors. He played like a gladiator to win the day with 44 points. Jesse Harris is also championship-ready after his runner-up performance, carding 41 points. Rundowns went to 37. Nearest to the pins were won by Adam Skinner (5), Nick Milne (7), Eddie Kemp (9), Declan Murphy (11), Jesse Harris (13), and Phil Daley (16). The weather gods smiled on the annual WGC President’s Cup sponsored by Gary RussellSharam and Jan Maher. Never far from the winner’s circle were Charlie and Kath Morrison who pulled out all stops to put on the winning score, with Eamon Cochram and daughter Tegan taking out runners-up. Pins went to Don Stewart, Sam Hinze and Trish Bell. The time sheets are filling fast for the club championships. It is likely there will be an increase in numbers this year - almost double a normal Saturday, so get your names in pronto. The course will be in immaculate condition with thanks to the greens director Bob Lester, greenkeepers Craig Cox and Paddy O’Dea, and the almost full-time volunteers Mick Payne, Jill Barnes, Effie Austen, Angus Cargill and the Thursday boys.
MILNE LEADS THE WAY A BIG field came out to play at Sunday sporters - doing best of the bunch was Nick Milne who played strongly to defeat runner-up Rowan Anderson. Rundowns went to Paul Armstrong and Jaidyn Milne. Nick Milne also had the best gross and capped off a great day, winning the pro pin. Norm Steele was in form on the 12th and collected the pin. The 17th was claimed by Mick Doorley, Angelo Maugeri and Bob Watts - each went home in the company of a meat tray. Same time (tee-off 7.30-8.30), same place (Stanthorpe Golf club) this Sunday - why not join the fun - visitors are always welcome.
The Killarney Cutters team. Picture: TERRY WEST MALLET MAYHEM PLAYERS enjoyed perfect conditions for Association Croquet in Stanthorpe and played in two groups of four. Joy Newman and Andrea Denkewitz had a close game against Grace Howard and Effey Russel winning 17-15. Jenny Tunbridge and Margaret Dickenson were defeated in a close game by Heather Widderick and Pat Schnoor, 25-18. Pat played very well with breaks of six and four. Margaret fired after morning caffeine to make two breaks of three. New members are always welcome - croquet is played on Tuesday mornings commencing at 8.30am but as the weather gets cooler a later start time is sure to be announced. On Friday morning the Gateballers come out to play and conditions were hot and humid after a wet start. Whites had two wins 19-7 and 13-12. The remaining three games were very close, but went to the Reds. In the first game Barry Russell played very well, sparking plenty of balls out, going through the gates easily and finally a successful “agari”. Effey Russell and Pat Schnoor also played some good shots. The group is playing well as they become more familiar with the rules. Players will get a guide to their progress when they host Toowoomba in a couple of weeks. Anyone interested in playing can contact Margaret (4681 0475). Hooper Runners Golf Croquet is played on Wednesday and the two games were very close with plenty of friendly banter. Teresa Pine was playing at her best with another “hoop in one”. Another birthday this week, (Elaine Brown) meant another batch of cupcakes. The sugar hit did wonders for Dianne Wren who was playing like a pro with some wonderful shots after the break. Well done Di, some very good shots. The Gateballers are always looking for new members, both male and female. For information contact Elaine 0401 630 272, Val 0420 415 154, Shirley 4681 1683. Local Sport From page 29 WEATHER GODS HAVE THEIR SAY THE weather gods played their hand last weekend and disrupted cricket in Stanthorpe and possibly played a hand in an upset result. On a day where there were to be two rounds of 20/20 games, rain forced one round to be cancelled and the remaining games to be transferred to the synthetic wicket at the High School. Souths and Valleys lined up in the early match, with Souths desperately seeking a win. They were sent into bat and scored 117 from their allotted 20 overs. The bowlers gave them plenty of assistance with wides contributing significantly to the total. Some eight and even 10 ball overs a sign of some undisciplined bowling. Big-hitting Danny Folkers clubbed five fours in his innings to top the scoring for Souths. Damian Anderson returned the best bowling figures for Valleys. He completed his spell with one wicket for eight runs. Rain began to fall late in Souths’ innings and the match was finally abandoned without Valleys facing a ball. When the rain eased the synthetic pitch dried enough for the game between RSL and Wanderers to get underway. Batting first Wanderers were able to set a decent target of 146 for the competition leaders, RSL. In a sign of good things to come for Wanderers, Mark Matthews-Fredricks playing his first game for the club shared the top scoring honours with experienced clubman Jamie Carnell - both scoring 36. Wanderers’ batsmen all managed to get off to good starts and contributed to the total. In a good team effort, six of the eight RSL bowlers claimed wickets. A run-out and a legside wide stumping added some interest to the dismissals. RSL have been at the top of their game all season but on Saturday had to call five juniors into their side and although the target was a little more than seven an over, it was always going to be a challenge for the youngsters. Experienced batsmen Duane Lihou, Sam Dowie, Luke Brady, and Dave Becker all did their best getting starts as did David Murgha, but with no-one able to go on and post a big score the task was made very difficult. RSL managed only 107, suffering only their second defeat this season.

It was a good all-round performance from the Wanderers' attack but it was the big in-swingers bowled by Scott Armbruster that did the most damage. Armbruster finished the game with four wickets for 24 runs. With two games until the finals RSL are assured of the minor premiership while the race for the remaining two finals berths are becoming clearer. The scoreboard now has RSL 61; Valleys 33; Wanderers 30 Souths 24. The win gives Wanderers a little clean air between themselves and Souths, however they cannot afford a loss in either of the final games. Souths on the other hand are in a must-win situation. This weekend RSL play Valleys but all eyes will be on the game between Wanderers and Souths. COWBOYS CONTINUE SUCCESS THE stellar pre-season form of the Warwick Cowboys continued last weekend when they downed the 2014 BRL premiers Killarney in the annual Xylon Smith Shield match in Killarney. The early signs were promising for the hosts when Captain Coach John Trindall posted the first try of the game and club president Dion Galloway converted. The Cowboys did not take long to get into their stride and at half-time the scores were 16-6, but Killarney were still well in the game. After the break the Cowboys came out firing and owned the second half in a dominant performance. To their credit, the Cutters did not give up as the Cowboys’ superior fitness began to tell. Jesse McIvor scored a treble for the Cowboys. Braydon Wilson crossed twice - other try scorers for the visitors were Matt West, Carl Gale and Jason Croft. Captain coach Matt Gainey slotted three conversions and Ben Sullivan and Trent Achilles each landed a conversion in the 42-6 Cowboys win. This game however is about much more than the score. It is played in memory of a popular young player who pulled on the jersey for both clubs. In the supporting game the Tenterfield Tigers stepped out for the first time in 2015 playing
Scott McLennen bowling for Maryvale.
GOOD WIN FOR INGLEWOOD IN A rain-shortened game Inglewood came away with a big win against Sovereign. David Elsley continued his good form, top-scoring with 47 in Inglewood’s total of 173. Daren Apted also batted
well for a score of 43. Inglewood were able to dismiss their opponents for only 62 runs, thanks in part to a fine bowling display from Ted Callaghan. Callaghan finished the game with a five-wicket haul and figures of 5/21. GOOD SUPPORT FOR ALLMAN PARK MEETING A BIG crowd turned out to Allman Park for Saturday’s race meeting, which was well supported by owners and trainers to the delight of club officials. Picavino was an impressive winner of the opening event. That win may have earned the filly a trip north to Rockhampton for the Capricorn Yearling Sales Classic in April. Ridden by claiming apprentice Emma Ljung the Kevin Kemp trained two-year-old was having her first start since October and finished impressively to beat Toowoomba gallopers Precious Ruler and Fair Ruler. Burmese Rugby starting at the good odds of $13 made it a worthwhile trip to Warwick for the Kemp stable, handing them a double when she won the fourth race. Supporters of local gallopers did not have to wait long to collect. The locally trained Norm Hilton galloper Had Me At Hello started a short priced favourite in the second event and Kenji Yoshida looked to have plenty in hand as he drove the three-year-old filly to the post to win comfortably by a little over a length. The filly was purchased at the Adelaide Magic Millions by Hilton’s wife and after being sidelined for 15 months it was a sweet victory for connections who have a big opinion of the wellbred galloper. Eagle Shaman was a good result for favourite punters, taking out race five for his Sunshine Coast connections. In other results, Beaudesert galloper Our Grand Finale starting at $26 had bookmakers cheering him all the way to the post as he careered away for a nine-length win in the Class 1 Handicap (1350 metres). There was also plenty of joy for the bookies in the next event, when $17 shot Aubrey’s Ace narrowly defeated the welltried Mutual Benefit and favourite Oggie. Punters were back in the saddle in the next. $2.60 favourite, Anymore from the John Dann stable was a comfortable winner in the Fraser Livestock Transport Class Four. The meeting wrapped up with the running of the 1100 metres Warwick Credit Union Class Four. There was no posing for the cameras from winner Selfie. Ridden by apprentice Brooke Stower, the Toowoomba galloper accounted for Round Mountain Gal and Hammersmith. Ridden honours for the day were shared between Emma Ljung and Kenji Yoshida who each rode a double.

Big hits were the order of the day.
against the Cowboys’ Reserve Grade. It is a newlook Tenterfield line-up this season and in a close game the Cowboys prevailed 28-18. Try scorers for the Tigers were Matthew Brown, Jack Daniels, Simon Lee and Murray Dunn. Captain-coach Brendon Minns led from the front and was one of the Tigers’ best. Dane Walker scored a double for the Cowboys. Other try scorers were Callum Freeman, Josh McIntosh, and Dallas Dennison. Former Inglewood player Ryan Donovan had a good game in the forwards for the Cowboys. The Cowboys who have now had wins against Aspley, the TRL and BRL premiers will now prepare for the start of the TRL season. It was a red-letter day for the Killarney ladies who fielded a League Tag Team for the first time. There was strong support for the Killarney ladies who are obviously finding their way in a game that is very new to them. They were outclassed on the scoreboard by last season’s premiers, the Tigerettes from Tenterfield. Meg Landers, the 2014 Player of the Year picked up from where she left off, leading the girls to a big win. Despite the blowout scoreline we can expect to see some good performances from the Killarney girls as the season progresses. COLTS DERAILED COLTS suffered their first loss this season, derailed by an impressive performance from Maryvale all-rounder Scott McLennan. Colts had first use of the Hamilton Oval wicket, but McLennan put the brakes on the scoring with his spinners taking 4/18 from in a seven overs. Solid performances from several Colts batsmen saw them post a reasonable run chase of 154. After a fine bowling performance McLennan went on to star with the bat. He top scored with 53, combining with Michael Bourke (30) to put on a match-winning fourth wicket partnership of 72.
