Sacked ‘for raising alarm on asbestos’ Safety fears at $300m project By PAUL MILLAR

SACKED: Rodica Posogeanu claims she was unfairly dismissed for raising concerns about asbestos on a residential development Picture: REG RYAN site at Fyansford. 135541
A GEELONG woman claims she was unfairly dismissed after raising concerns about asbestos removal and contamination at a housing development site in Fyansford. Rodica Posogeanu has complained to the Fair Work Commission that South Geelong’s St Quentin Consulting employed her as an on-site superintendent at Gen Fyansford in November before sacking her in January. Ms Posogeanu’s complaint said she became concerned within days of starting work when asbestos was detected in an area under excavation for the $300 million development. Geelong Trades Hall secretary Tim Gooden has lodged a statement in support of Ms Posogeanu, saying he found the site unsupervised and open to the public when he visited on 20 November. He questioned contractors about the location of asbestos buried on the former cement works site but they “did not know” and referred him to Ms Posogeanu. Her complaint said St Quentin’s engineering manager was upset that she had spoken to Mr Gooden even though she denied contacting the trades hall boss about her concerns. Ms Posogeanu said she continued expressing concern about work on the site, including dust levels and lack of signage warning the public. But contractors complained her continued interventions to ensure site safety were slowing progress on the project, she said. Ms Posogeanu’s complaint said she had seen a grader operating in an area suspected of containing asbestos. The operator was working without protective gear and had the grader’s door open. “Dust was being created, uncontrolled, with no water cart to damp it down. Clearly correct safety procedures were not being followed,’’ she said in her complaint. Ms Posogeanu alleged the engineering manager discriminated against her and that the main reason she was sacked was for raising “safety concerns around the remediation work at the Gen Fyansford project, in particular the identification and removal of asbestos and other contaminates”. Ms Posogeanu disputed the company’s claim she had verbally resigned. “All I said to them was that if I was wrong I would resign. You cannot imagine how I feel, as I was just doing my job,” she told the Independent. Continued page 5.

MOHAWKED mayor Darryn Lyons, who’s been likened to a peacock on occasion, can boast another feather in his cap. Neighbouring municipality Wyndham City needed to take a leaf out of Cr Lyons’ book, according to one of its councillors. Complaining about a lack of government attention for the council’s lobbying on road funding, Cr Heather Marcus said Wyndham needed to squawk more loudly for its needs to be heard. Cr Marcus lauded Geelong’s leader because of his constant promotion of his city. Perhaps after completing his term in Geelong Cr Lyons can get a guernsey up the road at Wyndham. A VICROADS website to gather feedback from road users along Latrobe Tce from Church St to Fyans St has attracted a few entries - but most from cyclists. Cyclists outnumbered motorists eight to three in placing feedback comments. Perhaps that’s why one motorist said: “Cyclist(s) should be banned from this road as it is a major carriageway through Geelong and should be dedicated to motorised vehicles
only for safety of all users.” Any drivers wishing to redress the balance can visit consult.vicroads.vic.gov.au/traffic-signal-review. MIDDLE-AGED ragers will be dusting off flares and squeezing into midriff tops as Geelong’s disco reunion trend takes another two-step forward later this month. Former late-night James St institution Escalation will return in all its head-spinning glory with a tribute to the local dancin’ fools of the ’70s and ’80s. The event follows an earlier Escalation reunion last year and similar successful events restored Caddies nightclub to the Sphinx Hotel, then known as The Golf View Hotel. Promoters said Escalation Reunion II would bring back lots of familiar names and faces from the central Geelong club scene. Hopefully that doesn’t include the notorious Escos’ stairs, the scene of more than one Double Take stumble last century!

New claim pet ‘rehomed’ despite owner ID
‘They gave away Bolte’ By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A SECOND case of Geelong Animal Welfare Society “rehoming“ a pet still subject to an ownership dispute has emerged. The new case, involving a dog, has been referred to a City of Greater Geelong investigation. Melbourne’s Brendan Andrew said he left Maltese terrier Bolte with family in Ocean Grove while recovering from a leg operation. But Bolte was surrendered to GAWS after a family dispute. Mr Andrew said he was told his dog would be euthanised within days, so he drove back to Geelong to claim
Bolte from GAWS. “But they refused to give him back,” Mr Andrew said. “It turns out the microchip in the dog was changed without my knowledge or permission and GAWS claims that because the dog was surrendered they won’t give him back to me. “I’ve explained the situation to them many times and provided veterinary proof of ownership but I just get blocked at every turn.” Mr Andrew obtained legal representation, only to discover Bolte had been moved to Melbourne Animal Rescue (MAR). But MAR refused to participate in court-ordered mediation, he said.
Mr Andrew’s legal representatives have issued a demand to MAR for all information on the rehoming of the dog. The case followed an Independent report two weeks ago about GAWS refusing to return a Corio woman’s rare cat and giving it to new owners. GAWS sold purebred ragdoll Sirus despite owner Lindall Gill producing photographic evidence of her ownership. Ms Gill said that after Sirus went missing she saw him on a GAWS Facebook post offering him for adoption and went to the Pt Henry Rd facility to claim her cat. Ms Gill visually identified Sirus
but GAWS staff claimed they had information the cat had been stolen and refused to release him, she said. Both disputes emerged as the latest GAWS financial reports revealed the society faces a $486,000 black hole. The deficit follows a $261,000 GAWS loss in 2013. GAWS blamed increasing administration expenses and payments to suppliers and employees, along with falling receipts from customers, for the latest loss. The 2014 GAWS financial report also showed that spending on legal fees jumped from $9598 in 2013 to $68,354 last year.
In brief Norlane drive-by SHOTGUN pellets have blasted through a home’s front window in a drive-by shooting at Norlane, according to police. Investigators have appealed for information on the shooting from a sedan about 10.30pm Tuesday.
Leak probe AN INVESTIGATION is underway into the leaking of confidential information about the appointment of City Hall’s chief executive officer last year, Mayor Darryn Lyons has confirmed. Cr Lyons welcomed the Local Government Inspectorate complying with council’s request for the investigation, saying “it’s important to ensure this doesn’t happen again”.
Koalas culled ALMOST 700 koalas have been culled in the Otways after stripping manna gum trees bare. Environment Minister Lisa Neville said the koalas could not have been relocated before the cull, between 2013 and 2014 under the previous government.
Malanoma wake-up GEELONG’S average of 112 melanomas a year is a “wake-up call” to residents, according to SunSmart manager Sue Heward. She called for greater vigilance against skin cancer from sun exposure between September and April.
Bodies found TWO DEAD bodies found in a car in the Otways are probably the result of a murder-suicide, police believe. The bodies, including the beaten body of a woman in the Honda Civic sedan’s boot, were discovered near Forrest on Saturday morning.
Building boom A RECORD $1.3 billion in building works boosted Geelong’s economy last year, according to City Hall. The total included Victoria’s second largest single building permit, for a $149 million fourth stage of Waurn Ponds’ Epworth Geelong Hospital project.
Drug help DRUG and alcohol services for young people in Geelong will benefit from a new partnership between agencies Gforce and Headspace. Gforce’s Rob Birth said the arrangement would offer headspace outreach services to apprentices for up to one day a week at Gforce offices.

Jay in a lather to razor funds for others with illness By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN AUTISM and epilepsy have failed to stop Jay Ennor from wanting to do something for others facing their own health fights. The 23-year-old from Bell Post Hill will repay the kindness shown to him when he embarks on a World’s Greatest Shave fundraiser - even though he hates shaving. “That’s why I grew my beard in the first place,“ Jay smiled.
Taking a step like this required a lot of effort for someone with autism, he conceded. But Jay is making inroads on a number of fronts, signing up for football umpire training with hopes of umpiring his first junior game this season. The shave fundraiser also gave Jay perspective on his own situation and helped him realise what others went through, he said.
“The support I have received has been phenomenal, to say the least, and my participation in the World’s Greatest Shave is my way of giving back to the community that has given so much to me.” Jay has already been pledged 25 per cent of his $560 target. Support agency Nexxt assists Jay to improvie his social interaction and community access. Nextt’s Ann Dreiberg said Jay

was well-known for his ability to assume a leadership role and mentor the other members of his support groups. “Jay always shows compassion with others. He’s always willing to converse with others, displaying a politeness and regard for others that’s second to none.” Donations and messages of support can be left on Jay’s fundraising page at my.leukaemiafoundation. org.au/rimin392.

MP, City black spots wrangle By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN

CORANGAMITE MP Sarah Henderson has clashed with City of Greater Geelong over money to fix mobile phone black spots. Ms Henderson said council should make a financial or inkind contribution to supplement a $100 million federal fund for improving mobile phone coverage. But the City hit back, saying telecommunications was a Commonwealth responsibility. Ms Henderson told parliament this week she “would like to see more action from the City of Greater Geelong. “Our region has some significant mobile phone black spots and we must all work together to maximise our chances of receiving our fair share of funding.“ Ms Henderson said that the

$100 million federal package needed to “leverage an additional $100 million in investment from bidders and other parties including state and local government. “The reality is that federal money alone will only go so far. “With so many black spots across the greater Geelong region, including in places like Armstrong Creek and Ocean Grove, it’s vital that we give ourselves every chance of securing maximum funding under the important program. Ms Henderson said 17 Victorian councils, including neighbouring Golden Plains, had offered a contribution of land at zero or concessional cost. “At the very least, the City of Greater Geelong should consider this type of contribution.
“Even in places like Armstrong Creek, a great developing part of the greater Geelong region, so many people cannot get mobile phone coverage. A City spokesperson said telecommunications was not a local government responsibility. “Council has undertaken significant community master planning within the Armstrong Creek Growth Area to ensure that infrastructure provision can be provided in an orderly way (that) maintains pace with demand growth. “This has involved discussions with Telstra and Optus on a range of potential telecommunications upgrades. “Council will continue to work with potential providers to examine opportunities for new infrastructure including co-location such as at Mt Duneed.

POLICE will monitor local firebugs over the long weekend as Crime Stoppers and firefighters join forces to raise an awareness of arsonists and the ongoing threat of fires. Geelong Inspector Gary Thompson said police wanted serial arsonists to know they were being watched. CFA regional operations manager Mick McGuinness said “human intervention was behind 50 per cent of fire, half of which were deliberately lit. Public awareness was crucial to preventing arsonists, he said. “We’re asking the community to remain vigilant and to look out for suspicious activities. Insp Thompson and Mr McGuinnes urged anyone with information about deliberately lit fires or potential arsonists phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

City’s ‘super trawler’ attacked By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN ENVIRONMENTALISTS have hit out at a plan to base a controversial 95-metre floating fishing factory in Geelong. The Independent reported last week that Seafish Tasmania planned to use the Geelong Star to take a quota of 16,500 tonnes from the small pelagic fishery, stretching from Queensland to Perth. The boat replaces a 142m “super trawler” that the Federal Government banned last year amid
overfishing fears. Environment Tasmania marine coordinator Rebecca Hubbard said permitting the Geelong Star into Australian waters was “like doing the time warp“. “It’s astounding. The similarities are amazing,” Ms Hubbard said. “A huge freezer factory trawler is once again being encouraged to come all the way from Europe despite ongoing public opposition to the industrialisation of our fisheries and the threat this poses
to our protected marine life.” Ms Hubbard said federal parliamentary secretary for agriculture Richard Colbeck seemed intent on repeating the mistakes of former Labor Agriculture Minister Joe Ludwig. “Sen Colbeck’s proposed 130m super trawler ban was obviously a Trojan horse for shorter but potentially equally devastating large freezer-factory trawlers. “Sen Colbeck continues to ignore a broad cross-section of the Australian community who do
not want to see this kind of industrialisation of our fisheries and increased threats to our protected marine life.” Tasmanian Conservation Trust’s Jon Bryan said introducing such a large vessel was a “sure-fire way of increasing the number of seals and dolphins killed around southern Australia”. “We’re not confident management measures will be successful in ensuring fishing activity does not deplete populations of some of Australia’s iconic marine species.
“There have been no significant advances in science or management structures associated with this fishery since the super trawler Margiris.“ Gamefish Tasmania Sports Fishing Club’s Nobby Clark raised concerns over dated stock assessments and limited understanding of fish movements. “The Australian Fisheries Management Authority has not developed a solution to the problem of localised depletion,” he said.
“Fishing operations will remain hidden from public scrutiny under the laws of commercial in confidence.” Tuna Club of Tasmania’s John Edwards said foreign partnerships should disallowed from selling off Australia’s fish cheaply. He called on the Federal Government to protect the “multimillion dollar recreational fishery that supports so many Australian micro economies”.
Men’s Sheds open up to wider community services Safety ‘sacking’ By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN MEN’S sheds have become a new community force around Geelong, with 12 now operating and more in the pipeline. The male gathering places have created positive impacts in the community, from highlighting men’s health, giving men a post-retirement identity and even fundraising. East Geelong Men’s Shed committee member Wayne Clarke said the sheds provided an ideal way for men to feel part of the community again. “A lot of blokes were wrapped up in their work, that was their life, so it’s nice for them to be able to feel they can do something in the community apart from that,” Mr Clarke said. The East Geelong shed recently held a fundraising barbecue and decided to donate the $500 proceeds to Geelong hospital’s children’s ward. “We do lots of projects for schools and kinders,“ Mr Clarke said. “We make toys for disadvantaged kids and have disability groups come to the shed. “Some guys sit and yack or play a few games, others like to get into the workshop and make a few things.”
MEN CARE: East Geelong men’s shed president Ian Hughes, Barwon Health’s Jodi Lammers and barbecue manager Mike Picture: REG RYAN Packham with a care pack funded by the shed’s donation. 135224_01 Barwon coordinator Bruce Ward said most sheds had a strong community role to play. “Clifton Springs make toys and donate them to the children’s hospital, Queenscliff and Ocean Grove do up old bikes and donate them, we’ve made the signs for the Bellarine rail
trail, make collection boxes for the RSL, do repairs for children’s centres, help out the Salvos - there’s a lot we do,” Mr Ward said. “We’re careful not to take away from businesses but where we can help out a bit we do.
“It’s still only a small proportion of what men’s sheds do and we still have to cover our costs because we don’t get any government funding support.” Mr Ward said new sheds were on the way to Hamlyn Heights, Pelican Shores estate Leopold and Lara.
From page 1. St Quentin’s letter of termination to Ms Posogeanu said she made ‘’inaccurate and unjustifiable” allegations against contractors, leading to “a complete breakdown in the working relationships necessary for smooth running of the Fyansford project”. The letter said she breached her terms of employment when she distributed material that could harm the company’s reputation. St Quentin refused to comment but said in a document responding to the allegations that all the safety issues raised had been addressed. The case is due to go before the Fair Work Commission on March 16 for a confidential hearing. Developer ICD Property has sold more than 70 properties at Gen Fyansford since its launch in September. ICD Property managing director Michael Mai said suppliers continued to “work closely with all relevant authorities, such as WorkSafe and the EPA, to ensure that the site is safe and that any environmental concerns are quickly identified and rectified”. “In addition, the site is subject to regular audits and assessment by four different expert consultancies,” Mr Mai said. “ICD Property works closely with reputable project managers to ensure Gen Fyansford is developed on-time and to specification while ensuring minimal biodiversity impacts resulting from the new development, thereby preserving the current geographical profile of the landscape.”

A NEW ultra-luxury small cruise ship has included Geelong on its maiden Australian voyage. The Seabourn Encore will dock in the city in March 2017 following the visit of its sister ship, Seabourn Odyssey, last month. The ship will visit nine Australian ports after a gala naming ceremony in Singapore, then head to Europe for its inaugural northern summer season. Seabourn president Richard Meadows said the Encore would set a new standard of ultra-luxury cruising.
“We’re excited to offer a diverse range of itineraries for the maiden season of Seabourn Encore and visit some of the most charming and sought-after destinations in Australia. “Seabourn Encore will expand and build on the line’s award-winning and highly acclaimed Odyssey-class ships, which revolutionised ultraluxury cruising. “Seabourn Encore will maintain the line’s high ratio of space per guest, enabling highly personalised service by close to one staff member for each guest on board.“ The ship will carry 604 passengers.

WORKSAFE is in chaos ahead of its promised move to Geelong after Premeir Daniel Andrews sacked its chair and chief executive officer this week. Mr Andrews asked for their resignations after further contamination was uncovered at a Country Fire Authority training college at Fiskville. The United Firefighters Union predicts “more heads will roll at the beleaguered authority, claiming officials knew of the dangers but failed to protect firefighters. Mr Andrews has previously ordered a review into WorkSafe

Mr Andrews said he would “not accept incompetence. Fiskville has endured a litany of safety concerns, including a link to a cancer cluster and fears firefighters were exposed to carcinogenic chemicals dating back to the 1970s. Finance Minister Robin Scott said confidence in public regulators must be uncompromised. “The public needs to have confidence in WorkSafe because it’s responsible for the health and safety of Victorian workers. “An assurance of safety was given. as well as the Geelong-headquartered Transport Accident Commission. The Andrews Government confirmed two weeks ago that a full WorkSafe relocation would go ahead after the Independent revealed fears only 300 of its 550 jobs would come to Geelong. Mr Andrews had “lost confidence“ in WorkSafe chief Denise Cosgrove and chair David Krasnostein. WorkSafe had assured the Government in December that Fiskville was safe but a toxic chemical was found in the centre’s mains water this week, leading to its immediate closure.

State rates cap, federal funding cuts turn up the pressure
Council jobs, services ‘at risk’ By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN THE REGION’S councils could cut jobs, services and infrastructure development as higher levels of government restrict their revenue sources, a municipal body has warned. Victorian Local Government Association (VLGA) said the councils were under pressure from reduced federal grants and State Government’s proposed cap on
rate increases, which Premier Daniel Andrews has referred to the Essential Services Commission (ESC) for approval. City of Greater Geelong strategy and performance acting general manager Andrew Keen said council was concerned about the plan to cap rates to inflation. “However, the guidelines and process are yet to be developed by the Essential Services Commission,” Mr Keen said.
“We hope to provide input into the process through our membership of a taskforce established by the MAV (Municipal Association of Victoria).” Surf Coast Shire Mayor Margot Smith said her council would have a better idea of the impact of the move once the ESC investigation was complete. VLGA president Sebastian Klein said councils were already under financial pressure, which a Victorian Auditor-
General report highlighted last year. Restricting the ability of municipalities, particularly small councils and others facing growth pressure, to address funding shortfalls through rates would compound the issue, he said. “If a rate policy is badly implemented it will be a triple whammy for communities, affecting services, jobs and local democracy,” Cr Klein said. “Our members have clearly told us that restricting
annual rates increases to the Consumer Price Index will lead to cuts in services and community infrastructure. “This, in turn, can easily lead to job losses, which will particularly effect the local economies of rural and regional communities. “And, most importantly, rate capping will severely undermine local democracy and the role of councils to work with their local communities.”

THE ROLE of the carbon tax on the closure of Alcoa’s Point Henry smelter has come under question after partner Alumina revealed energy costs had increased since the tax’s repeal. In its latest financial report, Alumina said the loss of carbon tax credits was partly reponsible for its increased energy costs. Alumina partnered Alcoa in the Point Henry smelter and rolling mill, which closed in August due to high running costs. The carbon tax was repealed in July. The revelation demonstrated the high level of compensation granted to major industries to offset the impact of the tax on carbon dioxide emissions. Aluminium smelters are extremely power-hungry, with Point Henry using its own power station at Anglesea as well as supplies from the electricity grid. The Federal Government gave energy-intensive, trade-exposed industries compensation worth 94.5 per cent of their carbon tax liability. Alumina’s financial report also revealed that costs for demolition and remediation of the Point Henry site were likely to extend to the end of 2018. The report said the Anglesea coal mine and power station were operating as a standalone facility after the Point Henry closure. Alcoa is seeking a buyer for the Anglesea facility, which employs around 80 staff.
GEELONG moviegoers are the winners in a movie ticket price war between the two major chains operating in the city. Reading Cinemas Waurn Ponds is selling $10 tickets to movies in its newly renovated theatres, while Village has been touting a Geelong-only offer of five tickets for $40, equating to $8 a ticket. Reading manager Dave Lovell said the ticket prices would be among the lowest in Australia. “It’s very good value and customers are the winners. People are amazed at the value, getting a brand-new fully renovated cinema for a cheaper price,“ Mr Lovell said. “They’re always asking our staff whether it’s a short-term thing but it’s staying as a permanent price. “We’re happy because we get bums on seats.” Mr Lovell said Reading Waurn Ponds had introduced its premium seating only a week ago, offering wide leather seats with tray tables for $15 and serviced by a hotfood menu. “It’s taken off. It’s only been going a fortnight and it’s proved pretty popular. “People like to make it a bit more special when they go out.” The Independent was unable to obtain comment from Village Cinemas.

Risk ‘outweighs value’ Summer ends in of increasing pursuits February storms
Under
the
weather Lindsay Smail
AREAS of the Geelong region enjoyed average or above-average rain in February. The only exceptions were the southern Otways and a couple of locations southwest of Ballarat. Even though they form much of the region’s water catchment areas, our storage levels were still at 65 per cent of capacity at the end of the month, which is healthy for this time of year. Geelong’s 30-year average rain for February is 35.7mm, which was exceeded in most of the urban area and on the Bellarine Peninsula. This resulted in higher-than-forecast rain for summer overall, which finished around 115 per cent of the average. So summer was wetter than normal, owing largely to several thunderstorm events as well as a lot of moist tropical air, which also provided more cloud than normal. Geelong was also warmer than the 30-year average for February. Daily minimums averaged 15.8C and maximums 25.8C compared with 14C and 25.1C respectively. Seven days were over 30C, with the maximum reaching 36.6C on 7 February. The coolest day was the first of the month, with an 18.3C maximum. The warmest night was 22 to 23 February, with a low of 19.6C. Summer temperatures overall were 1.1C warmer than the latest 30-year average but fewer very hot days were recorded, none over 40C. Fourteen days were over 30C compared with our average for summer of 15.4 days. Warmer nights explained most of this result. February had five thunder days and several thunderstorms but none were severe. On 21 February most of Geelong’s northern suburbs received thunderstorms. On 22 February only areas south of Grovedale had rain but the following day’s storms were more widespread across the urban area. Even so, no storms were heavy or created flashflooding or other damage. Only one strong wind day was recorded, with a gust of 63km/h at Breakwater on 22 February.

DANGER: John Lambert says police should reduce the frequency of vehicle pursuits in Picture: REG RYAN Geelong. 135446
GEELONG’S growing number of police pursuits are not worth the risk or trauma, according to a veteran road safety expert. John Lambert has long campaigned for an end to police pursuits in Victoria, unless the chase involves serious criminal matters. His latest call for restraint followed reports that local police pursuits had spiralled from 58 in 2010/2011 to 104 in 2013/2014. “Once a pursuit starts the die is set and the crash rate is 3500 times higher than normal driving,” the Wandana Heights engineer said. Mr Lambert said up to 80 per cent of drivers involved in police pursuits were impaired under the influence of drugs or alcohol and in many cases both substances. Many were also young, inexperienced drivers. Mr Lambert said one in 10,000 drivers tried to flee police but at least one in 300 pursuits ended in a fatality. One in seven chases ended in a car crash, one in 20 of which caused serious injury. Mr Lambert said innocent victims comprised up to 40 per cent of people killed or injured in police pursuits, with half of them passengers. Pursuing stolen cars or drivers who had committed minor infringements was not worth the effort, he said. “Police pursuits should be abandoned as an option in almost all cases.”
A state coroner last year mirrored Mr Lambert’s call for fewer police pursuits. John Olle urged police against pursuing drivers unless they were suspected of the most serious crimes. He called for restraint after finding that experienced police officers failed to consider safety issues in chases that resulted in the deaths of two teenagers. The Coroner, conducting an inquest into the deaths of two teenagers, in Melbourne in 2006 and 2009, said it appeared police had failed to ask themselves what would happen if they did not stop the drivers of the cars they were pursuing. Mr Olle said police should not be banned altogether from engaging in pursuits, provided they only gave chase when the most serious of crimes were involved and in the knowledge that someone had been or was about to be harmed. He recommended that police should not initiate car chases simply because drivers were trying to avoid arrest. Geelong Inspector Gary Thompson said police were now more aware of the dangers of pursuits and called them off if they perceived any danger to life. “However, it seems as if the risk taking behaviour of offenders is also on the increase,’’ Insp Thompson said. Police often had enough information to later track down drivers who managed to escape, he said.

Letters The road to respect I AM A driver who rides a bike and a cyclist who drives a car. In both respects I am legally permitted to be on the road and I attempt to obey the rules at all times. In my 34 years of driving I have experienced the best and worst of both cyclists and drivers. I have come to the conclusion a minority of each creates problems for the vast majority who use roads skilfully and within the rules. In an attempt to give balance to recent discussion in the Independent, I offer the following advice. All cyclists should: know and obey the rules of the road; be as visible as possible; be as predictable as possible; ride at skill levels for the speed and location; learn to anticipate while riding, expecting the unexpected from drivers; avoid reacting to bad driver behaviour with anger or violence; and try smiling and waving thanks to drivers who give space. All drivers should: know and obey road rules; expect the unexpected from riders, understand that cyclists often have to swerve without notice to avoid obstacles; be as predictable as possible; acknowledge cyclists’ right to use the road; avoid stereotyping cyclists based on the poor behaviour of the few who shouldn’t be on the roads. tures in the rest of the world. Overall, the climate was no hotter than average. Today’s pattern shows high temperatures throughout the world, and even-higher temperatures around the North Atlantic and in Greenland, than in the medieval warm period. Third, the likely main drivers of warming during the medieval period were high solar activity, low volcanic activity and changes in ocean circulation, none of which would cause global warming now. Our current climate is clearly caused by humans. Gavin Brown East Geelong
Impact of power bills on needy disturbing IT WAS extremely disturbing to read that people in Geelong are going without food in order to pay for basic bills and soaring utility costs (Independent, 20 February). No person should have to go to bed hungry in our city, or need to rely on handouts in order to survive. And we can’t expect welfare agencies and churches to meet the growing need for help on their own.
HUNGER: 20 February story. Australia needs a moreadequate living minimum wage for workers, immediate increases in payments to the unemployed and people on pensions, and rises to benefits for low-income families.

I call on our state and federal MPs to advocate immediately for these changes. In the meantime, I ask our mayor, councillors and MPs to pledge council and government money to agencies such as St Vinnies, UnitingCare and The Salvation Army so they can give the best possible assistance to people in desperate need in our city. Robert Van Zetten Highton
It’s really about energy
Deniers not real sceptics
Warm then, warmer now
ALAN Barron promotes himself as a sceptic (Letters, 13 and 27 February). A genuine sceptic who was unconvinced that global warming was caused by human emissions of carbon dioxide would still have to conclude that action should be taken. This is because, by definition, scepticism means doubt, not certainty. It would be inconsistent and irresponsible for someone declaring a sceptical position on an issue with possibly catastrophic consequences, such as global warming, to then call for no action. To avoid this, sceptics must take the more-extreme position of denying any truth to human-induced climate change at all. This is the difference between a sceptic and denier. Mr Barron’s views all fall into the latter category. Jukka Tuisku Barwon Heads
I NORMALLY restrain from responding to climate sceptics but couldn’t resist the bait of B Bourke, who compared climate change with atomic-bomb testing and thalidomide (Letters, 27 February). I respect the intelligence of readers too much to even explain how flawed and insensitive the comparisons were. Mr Bourke also asked why Greenland was once a green land and how it was then compared to now. First, Greenland was never particularly green. It was founded by Eric the Red who was banished from Norway in 982AD. Most historians believe he named it Greenland to encourage others to join him. Second, there was a medieval warm period, from 800AD to 1400AD, and Greenland was warmer than it is now, but the period’s temperature patterns show particularly warm spots in the North Atlantic, affecting Europe and North America, but colder tempera-
RATHER than endlessly debating climate change, we should address the underlying issue: energy supplies. Those who question climate science seem motivated by their concern that moving away from fossil fuels will cost us more and harm our economy. However, there are other perhaps more-compelling reasons to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels. They are, after all, a non-renewable resource and therefore will eventually run out. As they become scarcer they will become more expensive and finding and extracting them will have a greater impact on the environment and cause more conflict with other land uses, such as farming. Developing and supporting a variety of renewable energy technologies will provide a sustainable energy supply and the costs should fall over time. It is difficult to mount a logical argument for continuing to support the fossil fuel industry at the expense of the renewable energy sector. Daryl Backwell Breamlea

is entirely appropriate and will, I’m sure, secure strong houses for the production and induce in audiences a mood of thoughtful celebration.” More said the classic status added its own complexity to production of the play. “To my mind the first requirement is respect; respect for the characters drawn by the author and the historical integrity of the period presented in the work. “The great value of presenting past works is the challenge they make to present values and ways of living. “This approach has to be bal-

IT WAS the play that was initially rejected because it might cause offence, and when it was finally performed, attracted a bomb scare and needed police protection at the stage door. But Alan Seymour’s The One Day of the Year is now recognised as an Australian classic, still as relevant today as it was in the 1960s. Perhaps even more so considering the play will cast its critical eye over the meaning of Australia’s most symbolic day, Anzac Day, during the centenary of the Gallipoli landing. Director Denis Moore said it was a privilege to be involved with the production. “The One Day of the Year stands with Ray Lawler’s Summer of the Seventeenth Doll as a landmark work of the late 1950s,” he said. “Seymour’s play had the courage to cast a searching eye over one of the nation’s sacred symbolic days and to examine, with honesty tempered by compassion, the rifts that open up between family members, generations and classes as a result of this veneration. “To revive this great play in the context of the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing

Listies to bring plenty of LOLs ADULTS will enjoy as many laughs as their children at a kids’ comedy show in Geelong tomorrow, according to reviewers. One reviewer described The Listies’ as in “a dimension all of their own”. “Nobody else does comedy for kids this brilliantly but what’s more astounding is that adults have just as much fun.” The Listies, comprising Matt Kelly and Richard Higgins, will play Geelong Performing Arts Centre (GPAC) after selling out shows around Australia, New Zealand and the UK. GPAC described their new show, The Listies Make You LOL!, as like “The Young Ones hosting Play School – if The Young Ones had downloaded two gigabytes of fart noises”. The show features “alien attacks, toilet paper guns, spew, the rudest word in the world and the most disgusting pair of undies you have ever seen in your entire life”. With a background in children’s theatre, Kelly and Higgins launched their first show, The Listies – More Fun Than a Wii, in 2009. The following year it became the first and only children’s show to earn a Barry Nomination for Best Show at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

THE Dance Company operates under the guidance of experienced, friendly teachers in a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere. The Dance Company is run by Peta Cotter who has over 30 years’ experience in all facets of dance. “What I am interested in is helping kids reach their full potential, Peta says. “Dance contributes so much more to our lives than just a series of movements. I have witnessed kids come to our studio who may not have the potential to be the best dancer on the block but who leave with life skills and a
solid foundation for adulthood. “They have a strong work ethic, are committed and have an ability to present themselves with confidence and humility. “Fundamentally, I am interested in presenting decent, wellrounded human beings who go on to have happy, healthy productive lives. If a few students along the way go onto careers in dance, fabulous – The Dance Company will continue to support them all the way with pride. The school operates at Lara and Little River. Classes run on Monday and Wednesday evenings and all-day Saturday. The Dance Company keeps

classes interesting with the latest dance styles and music. Students do not have to perform on stage or sit exams – they can simply choose to attend for enjoyment, exercise and social benefits. The Dance Company operates on pay-as-you come basis, so students do not have to pay for classes they are unable to attend. The school offers classes in jazz, tap, classical ballet, modern dance, hip hop and acro. Classes are available for boys and girls aged three and up. More information is available by phoning Peta on 0417 585 131.

And that’s advice from skin-care expert Richard Parker, of Rationale. “Doctors are really the only ones to assess and treat your skin concerns and prescribe the products most suitable for you,” Richard says. “I’ve been privileged to work with top dermatologists and plastic surgeons and ASFB’s Ian Holten is one of the best.” Richard says the science behind skin-care brands from the department store beauty floor – including the luxury ones – simply doesn’t stack up. “The experts at ASFB can help reverse sun damage and give you back your youthful image, focussing on the most natural look,” Richard explains. “ASFB can offer the full spectrum of anti-aging treatment. “I think everyone is looking for the perfect skincare system - it has to work for every skin and embrace every skin-care innovation that delivers. “The Rationale Essential Six ticks all the boxes. It creates a luminosity that’s instantly desirable and recognisable. “There’s barely a celeb in Australia who isn’t on it and they rave about it - even big names on beauty contracts with international luxury brands. “Rationale reverses the ageing process and restores skin its former youthful condition. Radiant, flawless skin brings with it the gift of confidence.”

$50 off help for foot, leg pains FOOT & Leg Pain Clinics is here to help with a reputation for getting results. The clinics are trusted experts in providing proven solutions to assist foot and leg pain and injuries. Renowned for successful patient outcomes, the clinics have expertise in treating issues such as pain in heels, knees, arches and shins as well as plantar fasciitis, ankle concerns, bunions and injuries Foot & Leg Pain Clinics can even assist soft tissue regeneration and heal injuries thanks to new, natural injection therapies. Experienced podiatrist Dr David Kavanagh, of Geelong’s Foot & Leg Pain Clinics, says addressing the cause of problems rather than just treating symptoms is key to achieving successful long-term outcomes for patients. “Many issues persist because they’re misdiagnosed, causes are not addressed specifically and inappropriate treatments are utilised. Keeping up-todate with the latest medical research and treatments and taking a holistic and personalised approach is also extremely important,” Dr Kavanagh said. “Health and healing is not a one-size-fits-all approach. Patients’ individual and specific lifestyle factors, nutritional status and requirements, overall health and injury concerns all play an important role in achieving optimal healing.”
Pain in the lower leg and foot area can be debilitating but solutions are available.
Foot & Leg Pain Clinics have assisted people who had been told nothing could be done for them or that surgery was their only option. The clinics have also been chosen podiatrists for some of the world’s best athletes and thousands of regular people, so clients can rest assured they’re in good hands. Appointments are available by phoning 1300 328 300. Anyone mentioning this article receives $50 off their initial consultation.

Dental implants like new teeth Also, bone loss can occur around the missing tooth. Finally, a missing tooth can obviously have an adverse impact on someone’s appearance to others. A solution to missing teeth is a dental implant. Nothing replaces natural teeth but dental implants can come close. In use for many years, the implants look and act like natural teeth. They also fit securely even when chewing and speaking.
A single tooth implant does not involve treatment to other teeth. The way implants are placed depends on the patient, the type of implant and the tooth being replaced. Some implants require two or three appointments, while others sometimes takes longer. Anyone considering an implant should first discuss the right type with a dentist. Norlane Dental Surgery offers free appointments to discuss implants with a dentist.

THERE are many reasons to replace missing teeth. The first is that missing teeth can affect speaking and chewing. If a missing tooth is not replaced, the teeth around it can move, which can affect the person’s bite and place more stress on their teeth and jaw joints. Teeth that have tipped or drifted are also harder to clean, which puts them at a higher risk for tooth decay and gum disease.

eware carbon monoxide – it is a silent killer. A warning to homeowners who have gas heating regarding the dangers of carbon monoxide. It is a poison you can’t smell or taste but can be given off by your heater without you even knowing it. There have been a number of deaths from carbon monoxide poisoning in Victoria in the last few years. Energy Safe Victoria is aware of countless near misses where people have nearly died from carbon monoxide poisoning. It is mainly faulty or unserviced gas heaters which can cause carbon monoxide to be produced. Energy Safe Victoria and the Plumbing Industry Commission recommend that gas heating be serviced by a licensed or registered gasfitter before the start of winter. Gasfitters who service the appliance must have a carbon monoxide analyser/detector that has

IndySport Cats put out of misery GEELONG Cricket Club was finally put out of its misery last Saturday when it was dismissed for 157 in just 36.1 overs in pursuit of Essendon’s 9/304 declared. Hayden Butterworth top scored with 53 and when the Cats were asked to bat again he backed it up with 66 in the second dig. Still, he will see this as a wasted season and will look to return to his best next campaign. Eamonn Vines scored an unbeaten 71 second time around and would have to be pleased with his season, the youngster emerging as a real star of the competition. To be fair, the club lacked the depth of previous seasons and no one could question the players’ application or efforts - they were just simply outclassed most weeks. The club will look to find a new coach after Damian Shanahan resigned from the role last week with two years remaining on his contract. While he did a fantastic job, perhaps a new face might be just the tonic the young squad needs. The Third XI will now carry the hopes of the club after earning the right to contest the finals. The thirds will take on St Kilda at home this weekend. In Geelong Cricket Association, Grovedale look the most likely to pinch the last spot in the finals

after finding form at just the right time against South Barwon. Chris Young took 4/29, while Brendan Allen leant support with 2/18 as the Tigers dismissed their hosts for just 134. In reply, Grovedale moved to 1/33 at stumps, with the Tigers’ destiny in their own hands tomorrow. Murgheboluc looks like dropping out of the six after arriving at Richmond Crescent on Saturday to find Geelong City had rolled out a severely underprepared wicket. The Frogs were unsurprisingly asked to bat first and could manage just 57, which was almost enough as they rolled City for 67. With still plenty of time left, Murgheboluc had to bat again and struggled to 6/84 at stumps. It will be interesting to see what sort of conditions are presented tomorrow and also what sort of action the GCA takes on the matter.
In division two, St Peter’s looks to have sixth place in the bag after restricting Guild St Mary’s to 132 before cruising to 0/27 at stumps. Will Turnley took 3/7, although all the Saints bowlers did their bit with a wicket each. While Newcomb & District looks like winning outright against Alexander Thomson, it will be in vain because the team will finish one point behind the Saints. Division three looks like having its most exciting final day in years, with two sides still capable of securing the vital sixth spot on the ladder. Sixth placed Bell Park managed just 149 against eighth placed Little River, which finished at 4/42 in reply. However, seventh placed Winchelsea threw a spanner in the works, setting up a possible outright result against Corio. The Blues bowled out their visitors for just 106 before powering to 2/159 at the close of play. Winchelsea already securing the points means Little River won’t contest this year’s finals. Winch will earn a finals place if it can win on the second innings but if defeated will hope its first innings points will be enough if Little River can chase down 150.
Warriors notch first win for 2015, now for Knights By JOSIP ZILIC NORTH Geelong Warriors opened its 2015 winning account in triumphant fashion on Wednesday night, overrunning more-fancied opponents Green Gully 6-1 in Melbourne. The Warriors were determined and aggressive, closing down Green Gully at every opportunity as hat-trick hero Robbie Zadworny worked his way into the centre of the action. Zadworny opened the score in the 16th minute, slotting a well-weighted Vito Cichello throughball past Kieran Gonzalez at the near post. In the 35th minute Green Gully coach Bob Stojcevski was forced to take off right-back Aaron Cohen as Zadworny gave him a torrid time. Like a man possessed, Zadworny pressed on, beating his man just moments before half time when he lobbed a ball over the advancing keeper from 18 yards. Immediately after the break Green Gully got on the scoreboard in an attempt to revive its fortunes when Mathew Reid swept home after some poor marking by North Geelong’s defence. But that was all Green Gully could summon on the night. Zadworny was the man again, continuing his domination with a 51st minute goal when he chested a Cichello through-ball to ground and dispatched with aplomb, bagging his hat-trick in the process. The Warriors made some changes after the 65th minute, preserving legs ahead of another big clash on Saturday against the Knights. But it didn’t stop the Warriors’ march, with Juso Julardzija netting a well-worked team goal in the 70th minute. Then Reardo Luka came on as a sub, curling in a spectacular 25-yard strike at the foot of the post. To ice the cake in the dying minutes, Julardzija pounced on a Nicholas Jurcic ball worked down the left wing to finish from close range and bag the side’s sixth goal. Warriors coach Micky Colina was rapt with the first win for 2015. “It’s a pleasure to watch the things you work on come together in a match, the effort and commitment,” he said. Colina also showed his gratitude to the Warriors faithful. “Hats off again to our supporters. They’re amazing, coming to a mid-week match in Melbourne to show their commitment. “The team feeds off that”.

Offshore mix up OFFSHORE reports were mixed over the past week, with the kingfish elusive. Many anglers search for kingies instead stumbled across large schools of striped tuna in 15m to 20m off Ocean Grove. These extremely fast moving fish took small metal lures and clear-coloured soft plastics cast ahead of the schools. The most productive fishing to be had last week was inside Port Philip Bay. Steve Prior, Paul Jones and Jason O’Sullivan anchored in 21m off St Leonards last Friday night when they baited up with fresh slimy mackerel fillets. They boated a hard-fighting gummy shark of 14kg, which took all three of them to subdue. Anglers fishing closer to shore had great results on whiting over the grass beds. Pippies were the bait of choice and the run-out tide was best. Clifton Springs was the go-to location for snapper, with fish to 6kg holding along the channel edges and spoil grounds. Alcoa Pier was also a solid option, although the size was down with most fish averaging 40cm to 50cm. Bradley Cox cast Fish Arrow soft plastics scented with S-Factor around Geelong’s waterfront, banking flathead to 40cm. Anglers fishing Bird Rock at the entrance of Corio Bay boated flathead while drifting and casting soft plastics among the sand and weed patches. Whiting were also taken from Bird Rock, with most fish averaging 33cm to 36cm. Tenderised squid caught the larger whiting. The Barwon River estuary produced elephant fish and mulloway in great numbers. Daniel Baden and I baited in the estuary with fresh squid, catching an elephant fish just over 3kg and a mulloway of 60cm, which we released. North winds were conducive to spinning the surf for Australian salmon, with beaches such as Bancoora and further along toward Lorne holding fish to 2kg. Anglers who made daybreak starts had the best results. Portland and Port Fairy were hot for tuna and kingfish. Port Fairy hosted plenty of anglers casting stickbaits into schools of surface-feeding fish, while finicky tuna holding in close off Portland were taken on trolled occy skirts. On the freshwater front, Wurdee Boluc Reservoir produced redfin to 45cm for patient anglers. Long casts were essential to get out over the thick weed beds. Down the western district, Lake Bullen Merri yielded Chinook salmon to 2kg on baits fished down deep amid solid berley trails. The odd rainbow was a by-catch for anglers using glassies or Powerbait. Next week should be worth fishing for kingfish off Barwon Heads, with Sunday looking the most likely day conditions-wise. An alternative will be fishing for snapper along the channel edges inside the bay. The long weekend might also present an opportunity to hit Port Fairy or Portland for the tuna and kingfish.
Baseball club hopes to be a hit on its come-and-try day By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN
HIT: Brothers Sam and Harrison Simmons practise their skills.
IT’S A game combining the exciting aspects of soccer, 20/20 cricket and athletics and it’s great for all ages and abilities. Enthusiastic baseball fan Dave Crotty said players could dive like a goal keeper, hit like Aaron Finch and run like a sprinter.
Bellarine Bears Baseball Club will host a come-and-try day at its Wallington Recreation Reserve home base for juniors from 9 am and seniors from midday on 15 March. Crotty said the club ran junior baseball versions of programs like kanga cricket and Auskick.
“It’s great for kids aged between four and 10 years so they can have a go and be introduced to the sport,” he explained. “We spend a fair bit of time with our kids and encourage parent participation. If the kids enjoy it they can get further involved. “We run after-school programs and
we have coaches running clinics. We have an indoor batting shed with hitting nets and a pitching machine that can shoot out a couple of hundred balls for batting practice.” Crotty said anyone wanting more information could phone him on 0418 520 259 for juniors and Chris Barker on 0434 576 667 for seniors.
